Historic atmosphere

By Tim M |

Came here after a tour for drinks. Very nice historic atmosphere. Also went to the museum, it was small but had some fun exhibits like George Washington in comics.

Great!

By iver0185 |

Oldest building in New York City where George Washington ate! Very nice setting with friendly staff. Would go back!

A Completely Cool Piece of History

By MeggersS |

Great food and service, and you can feel the history even with the modern updates. A definite must to take a step back for even a glimpse and sit where General George Washington did.

Don't Miss the Museum!

By plesprue |

Truly special place. You can look around and truly envision George Washington having dinner with his men. We did the museum (not dinner/bar because we were traveling with kids). Note that they do tour (for the cost of admission) once each on Sat or Sunday. If doing it over, I would make that a priority to make sure I did not miss any special details.

George Washington ate here (really)

By Adventure Diva |

Step back in time at NYC's oldest bar and restaurant. This watering hole hosted George Washington way back in the day. I'm not a bourbon drinker normally but did try their "Angel's Envy" in the Hideout Bar. The drink had a sweetness without being overly sweet. Staff was friendly and helpful.

Historic !

By bf92 |

We stopped off Fraunces Tavern when in the Financial district…. basically for one drink given the history surrounding the place. We enjoyed the visit and then nipped around the corner to Stone Street (which is lined with numerous bars) for another drink. I’d definitely recommend the visit, mainly for the history that lies within its walls but it was also very friendly with a great atmosphere… there was live music in the back bar when we visited. An Irish guy who I unfortunately can’t remember the name or but he was very good.

Good food and atmosphere

By Viktoryia G |

Good food, great ambition and atmosphere , good service but drinks you should order the only ones that are on menu.. we ordered mojito off menu and it was not even close to the mojito taste.. everything that was on the menu was good .. it has a lot of character and the price is reasonable

Enjoy food and drinks in a former headquarters of George Washington.

By John Rossillo |

In my retired life as a teacher, I wanted to go back and leisurely visit places I enjoyed taking my students. Having seen the Museum many times, I wanted to sit and have a few beers. The atmosphere in the tavern is very relaxed. The ambiance does give you the feel of a historic place. The different rooms are beautifully redecorated. Some rooms can take you back in time. The selection of beers is terrific. I recommend the Samuel Fraunces Ale. I accompanied it with a jumbo pretzel. Sitting there having beers sent great memories of the lessons the students received visiting the museum. Every New Yorker should visit this tavern. I plan to come back and have dinner. Here is a little history on the place. Today tourists see Fraunces as a Restaurant and Museum. Little do they know what is inside. As one of the oldest standing buildings in Manhattan it once served as a headquarters for General George Washington. Etiene Delancy (Married to daughter of Van Cortlandt, Anne) built the current building as a house in 1719. The house was later sold to Samuel Fraunces who converted the home to a tavern. Before the revolution the house was a meeting spot for the Sons of Liberty. In 1775, a student militia stole a cannon and fired on a Royal Navy ship in the New York Harbor. The ship retailiated by firing a 32 gun broadside on the city sending a cannonball through the roof of the tavern. When the British evacuated New York after the revolution George Washington returned to Fraunces Tavern. He had his farewell dinner with his officers of the Continental Army.

Disappointing

By Matt P |

I was really looking forward to this dinner & it pains me to give it a poor review. We had a reservation & were seated right on time. Waited several minutes for a waitress to come by our table. She took our drink order & brought them pretty quickly & took our dinner order. The cocktails were good. We got the pretzel as our appetizer & it was dry (no better or worse than a pretzel one can get on the street in NYC). We both ordered steaks (strip & filet) & they came out cooked exactly to our temperature request & the presentation was very good, but there was no flavor. Even the sides were bland tasting. Everything needed salt & pepper added at the table to provide some seasoning taste. As we finished, we heard & saw our waitress say good bye to the hostess & out the door she went. We hadn’t gotten our bill, she hadn’t checked to see if we needed anything or to let us know someone else was going to be finishing with us, she just left. We had to wave down the guy clearing tables to ask him for our check (we actually had more contact with him than our actual waitress). The history of the building was neat, but not enough to make up for the rest of the disappointing evening.

Historic building with mundane food offerings

By IvyDad |

Made a visit to nearby Federal Hall, so decided to continue the theme and eat at this historic eatery. We were disappointed. Just having a meal in an historic building was not enough for a satisfying experience. The fish in the fish and chips was too thick with batter that was undercooked in some spots. Fries were good as was the beer on tap. If you want to stop and get a taste of history, stick with a beer but move on to better grub sites.

Real New York.

By Roanma |

Beautiful place, not touristy. Excellent value for money. Great live music, generous dishes. Place frequented by Americans.

Do NOT eat here if you are from The UK!

By Tia |

We were treated terribly! We were ignored, spoken to rudely and received zero customer service. The staff were super friendly with other people but were extremely hostile to us English. I understand that it may be controversial being English here due to its history but there was no need to behave in this manner towards us. I won’t be returning and I have spread the word on social media. I also asked about the history and the staff told me that they didn’t know and that they just work as a waiter. The manager rang me after seeing my google review. She was extremely angry with my review. She barely wanted to say sorry and accept that how we were treated was disgraceful. Please if you are from the UK do NOT visit this restaurant. Only go to the museum upstairs as they were absolutely lovely, kind and welcoming.

“Historical” place

By alberto o |

We got this "tip" from a person who has been living and studying in NYC for some time... a warm and welcoming place with wood paneling on the walls... kind staff... the meat cooked on the stone is excellent, definitely worth trying... the restaurant is located down town in the financial district ... in the evening this area empties and so, after paying, I asked the girl at the entrance if she could kindly call me a taxi ... She gave me the telephone number ... perhaps we are too accustomed to it, but in Italy something like this is not would have ever happened...

Cool History. But a real jerk works here

By Jan H |

I went with my daughter, son, and his fiance to visit this spot. The host (maybe the manager) was extremely rude when we went in. Being from out of town, we were not familiar with the different bars/restaurants inside Fraunce'sTavern. There are many different areas, and one was closed off. He then got annoyed with us for not knowing which area we wanted to be seated in. Hey, a**, how about a little guidance here, instead of being so put out. It's YOUR JOB to be welcoming and guide guests to their preferred area. He then showed us to our table and threw the menus down. I even said, 'Thank you'. Now, I dont know why... He ruined our visit there. Jerk. The food was sub-par. But you can't beat the history of this spot. Just go for a drink. Dont eat. And watch out for the rude male host. My trip to NYC was fabulous. Except for this place. Is that your intent to make people feel unwelcome?

A historic lunch

By Valerio R |

We went to the oldest tavern made in the USA for lunch, excellent service in a beautiful place that has preserved its historicity. Classic dishes from modern American history - the menu has nothing historical, offering a very canonical choice - and prices are average.

Sophisticated

By Drika Scherrer Chamilete |

We stopped without wanting to eat a salad and drink something, the restaurant eh beautiful and sophisticated, the salad was very tasty and the wine too

A MUST Experience!

By SuzanneLG |

This tavern is the oldest surviving building n Manhattan, and on the national register of historic places. . It served as the headquarters for George Washington. I’ve been wanting to go there for years and every time we went to New York it just never worked out, but I made sure to get Reservations and go this trip. I had the best chicken pot pie I’ve ever had in my whole entire life, along with a salad and a glass of wine, my husband had fish and chips. The mural on the wall in the dining room, is a painting of a battle screen from the revolutionary war. The restaurant has many rooms, and bar, it seems to always be full. It’s close to the financial district. Don’t miss out on this experience!

Fun Bar, Ordinary Food

By Zoom_Gotti |

Supposedly the oldest standing historical building in the city. It's been a bar/restaurant for about 250 years. And it was the site where, on December 4, 1783, George Washington said farewell to a group of his subordinate officers before he returned home. We called this his "farewell address" when we were in grade school. There's an upstairs museum but hours are limited. If this is your main interest, check the times first. Today it's a lively tavern with just so-so restaurant food. Most fun when the band plays in the bar. And it can get loud! Come for food, drinks, or both. After 10PM you'll only get a limited menu. Watch the wings, they're pretty spicy. Located near the Battery. There are several subway stops nearby, but you will have to walk a few blocks from any of them to get here.

Historical and Delicious

By Cindy R |

We came for a late lunch and all ordered the clam chowder, which was delicious. It had large pieces of potato, a creamy clam flavor and can with a yummy brown bread. The waitstaff was attentive and the atmosphere is lovely.

I confirm the good reviews

By Lupo |

Beautiful place, atmosphere of times gone by given by the wooden room and the soft lights even though it was lunch time. We had a beer, chicken wings in barbecue sauce and a smoked salmon sandwich. All good . Fast service. There was also a group playing…

Cool history subpar food

By Jacob W |

The history behind this place was very neat, but don’t go for the food or drinks. I was served a (very) expired cider and still charged for it, and the food was by no means anything special. We left wishing we would have spent our time elsewhere since we took the subway down for it while on our short vacation

Amazing history, charming atmosphere, great food

By Paul P |

We had a late lunch at Fraunces, but the place stayed packed. We were seated immediately with our Open Table reservation. We were not in the most historic part of the restaurant, but the room we were in was very charming. I had an excellent pastrami Reuben and my wife just had a big pretzel. We split some good, hot fries. The beer selection was good and we had excellent service. I wish we had time for the museum upstairs. I can’t believe I’ve missed this place on previous visits to New York. I plan to return and take time for the museum next time.

Great historical tavern!

By Kevin B |

We love this place! My wife and I love visiting historical sites and it's even better when it's a pub. We came here while in town in December and we loved our meal. The beer selection was great and my wife really liked her cocktail. I had a delicious burger with sweet potato fries and my wife had a steak with fries that she really liked as well. The history of the building is fantastic as well and it's just a cozy and comfortable place to have a drink and relax. It's definitely one that we're going to visit again in the future!

Old inn

By aldabra007 |

The oldest restaurant in New York is located on the edge of Wall Street. Crossing the entrance you can breathe an air that is completely different from other places and you perceive that the history of New York has passed through here. very large restaurant with several rooms, which I recommend visiting as it is very characteristic, and a large bar. atmosphere that takes you back to a couple of centuries, absolutely friendly staff and above average food with generous portions. slightly higher prices but in a single place it makes sense. There is a museum on the first floor which costs $10 to enter. Personally I would believe that restaurant customers had free entry but this is not the case. If you want to savor a different atmosphere in a logo where wood and candles make the atmosphere unique you absolutely have to stop by.

Good food and ambiance, service could be better

By Irene R |

We went to Fraunces Tavern for a tour and then dinner for my 14-year-old daughter's birthday who is an American Revolution lover and buff. The tour was at 2 pm on Saturday, very interesting if this is what you are into. We made reservations through open table and specified that it is for a birthday and if possible to put a happy birthday sign or something to that effect on the table. We had nothing on the table, no mention of a birthday even though my daughter had a happy birthday tiara on the whole time. The server we had was nice but forgot to bring out a salad we ordered before the main course and after waiting for it for 30 minutes, I reminded him as I saw people next to us getting their food (and they sat down much later), he brought the salad and our main courses came 2 minutes later from the kitchen, so we ended up rushing through the salad so we can eat our main courses still warm. He did apologize but the dinner was a bit rushed by this and did not feel celebratory. The food itself was very good and had it not been for the forgetful server, it was a fine meal. We had the pear/arugula salad, salmon, chicken and burger and then apple strudel for dessert, everything was delicious. I will come back again but will make sure it does not take 30 minutes to bring out the salad next time :)

Unforgettable December 31st

By regis d |

Restaurant that we had reserved for the evening of December 31... we are not disappointed with our experience. The dishes were typical and we enjoyed them. Good cocktails to accompany us towards 2024, good quality dishes and affordable prices for New York. Don't hesitate to book. They offer both pubs, brasseries and restaurants: something for all tastes.

I think the food was bey good, good service snd drinks too. I also loved the blankets i sat on nice snd comfortable. Ama

By Shane G |

Very good for a place in Downtown. I went there on July 26 2022 and August 3rd 2022. It was amazing for a place like this to go to with my brother and Grandma, personally I think it deserves 5 stars or higher.

Classy bar near to the financial district

By KAF0460 |

Classy bar with a good selection of beers and spirits. Very busy on a late Saturday afternoon; the food at various tables looked very good

Just us

By Daniel M |

Service was almost nonexistent and the ambience not to our liking. If you are into younger crowds, this could be the place for you.

Great Option with so much history

By Julie-Ann Rogers |

Not many places in NYC with 300 years of history .... this is one of them. You can feel the history in this building, it's got a lot of character and most importantly it's got great food and drink.

In the oldest building in NYC operates this restaurant that has different places to enjoy drinks, whiskey or meals. The Atmosphere is very nice and the staff attentive. The prices are accessible. I recommend it.

Great Lunch

By Lisa631 |

We went here for our son’s birthday lunch. I made a reservation online and put in the comments that we would like a price of cake brought out after lunch for our son. They did not forget. Server was great. Beer was great. Food was great. Atmosphere was great.

Big Disappointment.

By Peter D Shay A |

A friend and I were seated in a large dining room at 5 PM in order to have a quiet meal in this historic restaurant. Ambience and service were great, but the quality of the food was a big disappointment. We drank wine at $20.00 per glass and had a platter of charcuterie and a burger at $25. each. The charcuterie had a few different kinds of cheese, jam, crackers, some almonds and red grapes. The quality was not what you would expect from this historic restaurant. Worst of all was a over salted stale burger that might have been reheated from lunch, along with some greens a two cherry tomatoes. For a more than $100 plus a tip we expected alot better.

Historic location of note…. Hamilton baby!

By jenn_ |

If you’d like a laid back atmosphere with co fort food and a little American history….. great spot. Lovely fish n chips. Jazz music in the background. Nice ambiance.

Historic tavern with good food and drinks near Wall Street

By asiagirl511 |

This is a historic tavern which serves a variety of food and drinks. There is a whiskey bar, casual beer hall, restaurant and private rooms for events on the 2nd floor. Service is great and the fried cauliflower is a great starter. Amazing choice of whiskeys for those who care. Very close to stock exchange and wall street area.

Get your history and eats all in one place ......

By Jerome G |

There are not many places in the US that have been serving food and drink for almost 300 years .... this is one of them. The tavern appears to have had minimal decor changes since 1762 but that is what adds to the experience. Overall the food was very good and the chicken pot pie was outstanding.

Good address

By Clément B |

Restaurant with several rooms and different atmospheres, which is quite original. I had a bison burger with chipotle sauce, a treat! The rest a little basic. On the other hand the rating is quite high I think.

A delicious and historic gem in New York City!

By Leonard K |

While this was only a Happy Hour stop after hours of sightseeing, it was a wonderful visit. We only ordered the oysters, which were wonderful...they provided not only cocktail sauce, but also horseradish and vinegar! Their New England Clam Chowder was the best we've ever had. My wheat ale was delicious as well. Lastly, google the history of Samuel Fraunces, who founded this tavern before the Revolutionary War....a fascinating story of a black man from the Caribbean in our country's early history. Enjoy!

A proper pub

By Neil M |

We called in for lunch, an amazing venue, as historical as it gets in NYC, a must fir whisky fans and and the food isn't half bad either

Pleasantly Surprised

By MikeAKL |

I was expecting this to be a bit of a tourist trap but was pleasantly surprised. I dropped by for a drink and light meal. I was lead to the Independence Bar. Great atmosphere, appeared to mainly be locals having a drink. Good music. The Pulled Pork Sliders were excellent. You will need a phone with data to scan the QR code to see the drinks menu.

Don’t believe the hype

By Curious580506 |

Visiting NYC from Holland for city trip. Good food and very clean/ nice looking place and restrooms. One staff member was not that friendly, he snarled at me for asking a simple question about the soup. He kept talking Spanish with his other co worker and I got the feeling they were talking about me. He wanted my creditcard up front and held unto it, which is also very weird. Never experienced that before here in NYC.. I actually wanted to tip less but there was not even an option less than 20%. Read so many good things about it but I will not come back because of the staff experience I had. Its crazy how they expect tips in the States but they dont deserve it.

Lunch break on Wall Street

By Madnessilvia |

Historic tavern, beautiful location, courteous service, decent food, wide offering, value for money average for NYC.

By Pedro R |

Friendly staff, good food. The building and the decoration are worth the visit. Ate at the Piano bar, the music was great.

The food lives up to the tavern's reputation!

By dustythoughts |

I was really excited to try this place due to its role in the US Revolution (it's been functioning as a tavern since 1762!), and I was not disappointed. They tried to preserve as much of the tavern as possible from its earliest iteration, and it felt very well-settled. The staff were very friendly and answered all of our questions, and the menu had a wonderful variety of options that seemed like updated versions of long-standing dishes. The duck confit sandwich was divine, and the cobb salad was also fantastic. We also tried the pintxos flight of the smoked duck and gouda, which was intriguing and tasty; it's essentially a tapa.

Hamburgers and American History

By Mara |

Hamburgers and quality beer but what makes this place special is the fact that it is, they say, the oldest building in Manhattan, where George Washington held meetings and negotiations. The friendly waitress allowed us to go upstairs, to admire the ancient room where such meetings are said to take place. The place is worth a visit, there is also the attached museum but it closes at 17.

Lovely location always disappointing food.

By Andrew G |

It is so historical and so charming but the food is dreadful. Very uninspired and the fish and chips was frightening. Thick batter and cold peas. Great service from hiovanna from Montenegro. So sad

Fraud and rip-off

By Christian G |

You can wait forever at the reception unless you speak Spanish then you can push past the line, just cheeky or racist? As a tourist you get the whisky menu with some whiskies extremely overpriced even New York conditions, as a local you probably get another menu the drinks at our next table were not found on ours. Tourists are only cheated fingers off here. Without internet, no map Beware of prices.

Cool old building, mediocre food.

By Sandy G |

This is a wonderful old historic building that oozes charm. Have a drink and check out the building, but skip the meal. The food is mediocre at best. The service is rushed and not worth the price.

Quite historic & toothsome food😋

By Elsa C. L. |

I loved my eggs benedict with smoked salmon on a substituted slider bun, hollandaise sauce, salad and delicious potatoes! All six of us had a plate with no trace of what was on it. The tour of the museum is so interesting, especially its three centuries+ existence and all the significant historical events that took place in it from George Washington’s time. The tavern has several dining rooms, two(?) bars, and at least three entrances. Service is very good!

Bar full of history

By Luciano Martins Costa |

The oldest bar in NY, it's full of history. There's even a museum in it, where George Washington was. The beers are great! I recommend trying the Stouts.

Don’t reserve on opentable! Check out the walk in bars.

By Jesse N |

I love the bars (walk in) late at night, but DO NOT make dinner reservations through open table. The restaurant will cancel without notifying you (and even a family who made reservations over the phone were told they didn’t gave reservations but were simply in the wait list).

Delicious sandwiches and unique environment!

By Gius86 |

Beautiful restaurant, particular! Very welcoming! Inside you can relive so much American history! The sandwiches are delicious and also the dessert

Mandatory stage

By Dionid75 |

Impeccable style and suggestive environment, not to mention the burger made with top quality meat, also has a respectable whiskey corner

Beaut

By Lauryn |

Such a unique place with beautiful architecture. Love the fact that there are separate rooms for different types of dining/drinking. We arrived for our booking and unfortunately we did have to wait around 15 mins by the stairs for our table to be ready. However, that was the only negative of the whole evening. Our food was amazing and so was our server Igor who was very friendly and chatty. The dining room had lovely Christmas decorations and it felt very cosy and festive. Lovely evening.

Great Expectations

By elevena A |

Our server was professional and accommodating. My Fillet Mignon on a slab was more like a London broil over done .I did not complain because we dined later in the evening 7:30 pm and they were closing (early for NYC) We took dessert to go and it was fabulous !

New York Tour

By Edward S |

Great atmosphere - Good food - Good drink and beer selection. Staff was welcoming and helpful from arrival to departure.

Famous, but they don't take advantage

By lag-free |

Being a famous place, frequented by Washington, it would not need to keep up the level of food because, out of curiosity, the tourist would still go. The place is very nice, tidy bathrooms, good and fast Service, quality salad and exquisite hamburger.

Family Dining I Guess - No Separate Checks

By John E |

A historic setting in the Financial District makes for a great conversation piece. The food was good, and one of our two servers was polite and accommodating. When telling the other that we would like separate checks we were told in no uncertain terms - “we don’t do separate checks”. Seemed an odd stance for a restaurant in the heart of FiDi. Recommend business diners go elsewhere. Couples, singles and family groups might enjoy this spot.

Outstanding food in a location steeped in history.

By Kristin S |

We arrived a 11 a.m. and were promptly seated. The menu has some standards and some more unique offerings. I ordered the Jefferson Cobb Salad with salmon. It came with a champagne vinaigrette which I almost changed out. I'm so glad I didn't. It was amazing. My husband ordered the duck confit sandwich with parmesan truffle fries. He loves duck and said this sandwich was the best he's had. We were there on George Washington's birthday which added to the experience as his association with the tavern and its long history were the primary reason we choose to have lunch there. We toured the museum after our lunch. Don't miss the video which lasts about 30 minutes. We would definitely come here on our next visit to NYC.

Excellent Experience

Thanksgiving dinner for 9 with 3 children, They were full and busy. The food, service, atmosphere and promptness could not have been better. Truly worth every penny. Highly recommended!!

WALK 50 FEET MORE TO THE DEAD RABBIT

By coolbri |

We came for lunch but left after one - warm - drink. We decided to eat at the bar, as we had done in the past, and arrived early, so the room was not crowded. The bartender seemed very distracted. The beers came warm - is this supposed to be period appropriate? The service was lackluster. We have been here previously and had a great time. So, perhaps this was an off day; or maybe, it's simply become a tourist trap. We left and went to The Dead Rabbit, which is simply awesome.

Great setting but...

By Kévin Crss |

We checked this place to visit during our stay in New York. The place itself is superb. The setting is excellent. It's like a different time. But we found the welcome quite cold. Maybe we were being too "touristy," but we felt like we were bothering.

Excellent Choice to Eat!

By Mary T |

My favorite place to eat in Manhattan! I had chicken pot pie, Scottish eggs and the Presidential Punch. I don’t think any could be better! The atmosphere was awesome! The history is incredible. I will revisit next time I’m in the city!

Good, but a little overrated

By Tammy W |

The Tavern was recommended by several friends, and I was a tad disappointed. The atmosphere is historic and unique. The food tasted good but was a little pricey. We had the regular Mac and cheese and the lobster and crab roll with sweet potato fries. The fries were cooked to perfection with just the right amount of crispy on the outside and soft inside. I did not realize the lobster roll was going to be more like a tuna or seafood salad and served cold. The bread seemed a little less fresh but tasted ok. It's more of a texture issue. There were huge chunks of lobster and shrimp, and that was a huge bonus. For dessert, we had the cheesecake and sticky toffee pudding, which was the main reason we went there. The cheesecake was small, especially for the price. The pudding cake was a little dry and did not have much sauce on it. Overall, it was good and a unique experience, but I would probably not go back to eat there if in thr City again.

Great place for food, drink and atmosphere

By Hawklord_pxr5 |

I really like Fraunces Tavern, with its multiple rooms all having slightly different themes and atmospheres. Been a couple of times for drinks but this time went for food after getting off the Staaten Island Ferry as it’s only a 5 min walk away. Got a table ok at lunchtime, although it is usually really busy, and we both went for the chicken pot pie which was delicious. Got a bowl of fries too to dip in - yum. Our waitress was really nice too. Price is reasonable. Lots of great beers, wines, spirits and cocktails too.

Bad experience with management

By Zack E |

We were a party of 15 having dinner. Food was good and everything but the management needs a complete overhaul. The policy about accepting only 4 credit cards is stupid and un-heard of especially in NYC. We had to charge it on one credit card and it was very expensive so next time you got 15 people never coming to this restaurant again.

Address the Issues

By Ted D |

Been around since 1719. This place has character and history. I mean even George Washington visited the location for what I assume was a very important speech and bevs with the boys. However, what's this place has in history, building architecture, and character it lacks in food quality and taste. I had the Pear and Arugula salad and crab cakes. The stand out was the crab cake which was perfectly cooked and a quite generous portion. For the main course I ordered a filet "medium" and what came out was beyond reproach. The food quality was subpar. The mash potatoes were actually hard. Like boxed mashed gone bad. The broccolini was so stiff like it went from garden to table skipping the streaming process. Now the steak. The poor steak. It was damn near well done and chewy. What all these dishes had in common was the lack of flavor profiles. Even assuming this restaurant uses the same seasoning techniques of the 1700s my plate lacked the basic salt or pepper flavor profiles yet alone butter. My steak tasted bland and I was thoroughly disappointed. All in all I truly hope this was an off night. #addressthefoodorfarewell

Nice Find

What a fantastic find. We visited here on our last day in NY and were not disappointed. Great historical location, with good service, good food and live Irish music. No wonder George Washington liked it here 🎩

Much Happiness Is Produced By A Good Tavern

By Ross T |

We stopped in at this historic tavern for lunch and drinks. Both were enjoyed very much! To eat, we had traditional fish & chips and pulled pork sliders. They were excellent. I tried the Samuel Fraunces Ale and understood why this tavern was George Washington's watering-hole. All around a wonderful stop on our tour of downtown New York.

Went for Coffee - stayed for Lunch!

By christina175 |

Loved this atmospheric pub... probably because it’s a bit like our nice pubs in the UK! It had been recommended by a friend so we went for a coffee ( with free refills- unlike UK!) . So nice to get coffee in a real ceramic cup with saucer! Reasonably priced too. We were enjoying it so much that we stayed for lunch - yummy salad made even more enjoyable by some live jazz and a vocalist. Lovely staff. A great find!

A little history on Wall street

By CP6566 |

It's a historic place located in the "financial district" of New York a few hundred meters from Wall Street; it maintains the ancient style even though, in fact, it was the victim of a fire and was entirely rebuilt. It consists of many interconnected rooms furnished with wooden tables; there is a small museum attached as history says that George Washington ate in this tavern. We found a place quickly even without reservation and we took. 1 duck sandwich confi 1 tavern burger (classic burger on salad bed and onion rings) 2 draft beers. Very generous portions. Total $66 but, adding tax and tip you get to $85.06. Quick service. Tried on March 31, 2025 at lunch

Great Experience

By Alex S |

We held a happy hour for a team of 21 people in the Wine Room. Everything was great from the first communication through the end of the event. The food, drinks and service were awesome. Everyone had a great time. Thank you Lisa for arranging it!

Asian Stir Fry, VEGAN and Excellent

By russianwulfgar |

Kudos to them for making it easy for a Vegan to get a main entree. Yes, there's only one, but at least it's clearly obvious which is the only dish you can get, it's right there on the menu singled out from the 12 other entrees in its own category. We don't have to hunt and scour the menu trying to figure out what's vegan, what's got hidden dairy, etc. The Asian Stir Fry was delicious! I highly recommend it. I wasn't the only vegan in our group of 20 people, so at least 3 others had to order it as well and they all loved it. Since we had a very large group, our waitress worked really hard to get everyone their drinks and apps quickly and she was right on top of it. No mistakes and was super friendly and informative. Had a great time here and am hoping they add a few more vegan mains to their menu.

An incredible chance to dine in a historic setting

We had a great evening at Fraunces Tavern. To be able to dine somewhere with such incredible history was truly a special experience! The staff was friendly, the food was good, and the atmosphere was unbeatable. It was a fun chance for a mini-history lesson for my 10 year old! Reservations were easy to make- we did so the same day. Definitely recommend!

Must-visit historic spot amid a plethora of chains

By faangirl |

The 400-year-old tavern is a must-visit regardless of whether or what you eat/drink. (After you walk around the neighborhood counting the Chipotles and Starbucks, you'll understand.) As for the dining experience, there are several food menus and loads of drinks. I chose to eat from the "dinner" menu so I could sit in the quieter dining room and look around a bit. (The bar rooms are very atmospheric but lit authentically - that is, to 18th-century standards - and of course as noisy as one would expect.) My food - salmon, lemon tart, a personable Chardonnay - was pretty good, especially by post-pandemic standards. I would eat at the Tavern again. The service was fine except for one waiter who was quite perfunctory until midway through the service, when he must have remembered about the tip, at which point he warmed up. Visit this place, if only to sample an interesting brew, so that it stays afloat. New York needs to cherish its proper eateries and drinkeries. Otherwise, what's the point of a city like this?

Delicious lunch in historic setting

By Tais E. |

It's worth a visit! We made Reservation, as we saw it can be quite crowded, we arrived 30m before and as it was not crowded we were offered table options. We went for lunch and everyone asked for the filé mignon which was excellent. We love it!

Maravilhoso

Wonderful! Filet with fried potatoes in wonderful truffle oil. We ordered a pasta with delicious cheese as well! Well served dishes and fair price. In addition, there is a museum to see and the environment is beautiful and welcoming.

Historical Lunch at George Washington´s headquarters

By delfinacuario2000 |

I was not able to eat on my previous visit to NY as when I was in the area it was still too early, so on this last NY trip I planned accordingly to make sure I would not miss lunch at this historic and emblematic pub. History says this was George Washington´s headquarters and the place tells you this in every corner. The food is good, waiters are kind and prices reasonable. Located in lower Manhattan, very close to another not so turisty but well worth spot, the Stone street. Totally recommended!

Historic Pub and Restaurant

By Doctor Steve |

It’s great to see a little bit of history preserved in the heart of down town that proceeds the USA. The atmosphere was great, staff attentive food and drink were also on par! I’ll be back for more. My only observation is that history comes with a price, so don’t expect a cheap night out!

A must whenever I’m in NY

By Amanda W |

The food is delicious. Food and drinks are a little overpriced, but you don’t mind because everything is so good. The piano bar upstairs is a firm family favourite!

A fabulous find

By Janice R |

We had been over to Ellis Island and came back to Battery Park and were looking for a nice place for lunch close to the financial district so we could explore further in the afternoon. We stumbled upon Fraunces Tavern and what a wonderful find! Wonderfully welcoming and a great ambiance. We were shown to our table and our waiter (Owen from Dublin) was friendly and efficient taking drinks orders, bringing water for the table and having a chat with us. The food was delicious and we must say a lot better value for money than further up town. The wine was lovely, as were the beers and our burgers cooked to perfection. We would highly recommend this establishment if you are looking for lunch or dinner in that vicinity.

Dining in history

By Alice G |

A very quaint place indeed! Once inside it seems to take a step back in time: wooden floor, large benches and tables, soft lighting make the 'atmosphere really welcoming. Seen at Christmas time it is even more magical. A wide choice of dishes and drinks with good quality raw materials. The friendly and welcoming staff completes everything.

Definitely worth the visit - for the food, the cocktails, and the history

By Mickie M |

Historic landmark restaurant and bar with a great menu, creative cocktails, amazing interior, and excellent staff. The restaurant was busy but I was seated without delay and didn’t feel pressured to rush through my meal. There is so much to look at in this place; it makes you want to stay, enjoy the cocktails, and explore.

Should be a must go when you are going to the state of liberty !

By Sydneypoo |

From the building to the different atmosphere and the quality of the food and drinks, this is one of those rare finds where you can appreciate the history, the really origin of new Amsterdam and the piano bar ambiance all at the same time. By the way the bison burger was insanely good!!

Nice place

By jay3_112 |

Historic and very nice tavern. We ordered two clam chowders and one fish & chips, very good. They have a good variety of craft beer, not only on tap but also in cans and bottles. Friendly service, prices in line with New York.

Best Place in NYC

Very nice place, with exciting history. Effective serving and the food came quickly. The food was very good, rause portions. 32 degrees outside and cool and comfortable inside. Best hotels in New Yourk

Fraunces Tavern did not disappoint

By Penny B |

Friends from New York suggested Fraunces Tavern and I’m so glad we took their advice. We were welcomed and showed a table where Sam came over and explained how to view drinks menu. Our order arrived and we were not disappointed. We had a blackened salmon sandwich on ciabatta with fries and a separate speciality Jefferson’s Cob salad. When chatting to Sam he explained a lot of the history which we found interesting coming from UK. Our food was delicious, the salmon in particular was cooked to perfection and the sandwich was filled to overflowing! Would definitely come back.

Disappointing

By sthomps193 |

We were really excited to have dinner at a historic place on our trip so I made a reservation and we went out of our way to eat there. After being seated in the dining room and spending $200 on dinner and drinks with service that felt like we were an inconvenience, we went upstairs to check out the piano bar. There was a mediocre piano player and we were told if we wanted to stay, we needed to each get 2 more drinks so we left. I was going to get one more, but 2? No thanks. The vibe in the downstairs bar seemed fun and I wish I would’ve known that was an option for dinner instead. This could be a fantastic place but that just wasn’t the experience we had.

Want to work? Little!!

Normal food but after eating a plate at 8.30pm I ask for a dessert and they tell me that the kitchen is closed. To forget

Quaint- Best Lobster/ Shrimp roll

By IdoLove2travel |

Quaint tavern. Love the feel. We had the Best Lobster / Shrimp roll for the price ever ( cheaper than a lobster roll (1/4lb of meat in Halifax, NS same summer). The NE clam chowder is very good too.

I want to go back!

By ChristieLynnSA |

This is such a nice spot on its own, but when you add the history, it’s a must-do! We easily made reservations online a few hours before arriving for lunch. There are tons of furnishings and things on the wall that showcase the long life of this place. And, upstairs, there is a museum. I wish we’d planned more time for it. Note that there is a small fee to enter the museum, but it’s easy to miss due to the layout when you get to the top of the stairs. There’s also a small gift shop. The food is fancy and not cheap. Just something to know. But it is high-quality. You can preview the menu on the website. I want to go back!

Lovely restaurant in an old world setting.

By Alan F |

A lovely old building in Downtown Manhattan, which houses a selection of lovely dining and drinking areas. The food was extremely good whilst the service was very good. Decent value for money. A lovely experience.

Horrific food poisoning from Oysters

By Tara H |

My father was hospitalized with food poisoning after we ate here and they refused to take any responsibility. DO NOT have the oysters. He only ate oysters. It was a terrifying experience

Super cool historic spot with good drinks and food in Lower Manhattan.

By Alan P |

Visited for lunch on a visit to NYC for the weekend. Just finished a great cruise tour and was ready for some local faire. Atmosphere, food and drinks were great. The Live music sounded great. Our bar keep just moved from Ireland and he was fun. Definitely would recommend a visit. The oysters were good too.

Fabulous dinner setting

By Gillysauce |

We loved our dinner at the Fraunces Tavern the atmosphere was lively and cosy . The tavern is wonderful so historic and full of character. Our meal was delicious and the staff were very attentive and friendly. A highlight of our trip

What a night!

By Amanda W |

This place had so many different rooms and areas - we only planned dinner but we ended up staying until it closed! We ate downstairs - our party had the NY prime steak, the chicken and the burger. It was sensational food. We were huge fans of how they did their potato - I’d have eaten a bucket of it (if I could!). And then we went upstairs for drinks in the piano bar. The piano player was brilliant - entertaining for the crowd, took requests and kept the whole room engaged and singing and dancing. There were even some incredible performances by some of the staff! We recommend the cosmo, the naked and famous, the watermelon punch and the old fashioned!

Iconic bar in lower Manhattan

Great food, great bar and wonderful ambience. A little step back in time while offering a menu of items from charcuterie boards to full meal options. Even saw Santa Clause and George Washington while dining!

A Taste of History!

By MNM1011 |

We finished our Hamilton Tour outside the tavern and decided to go in to check it out. So glad we did! The tavern was visited by many of the revolutionaries and retains that sense of history inside. It's kind of dark and definitely old and we loved just walking through it. Our meal was a dozen delicious oysters followed by a crab cake and a scotch egg. The crab cake was one of the best we've ever had...all crab and nicely browned. It was our first scotch egg ever (but not the last) and it was spicy and wonderful. Can't wait to have another! Great history, great food and an excellent server, Alice. We will definitely be back!

Dining in history

By Rebecca O |

Museum was closed so we didn’t get to tour. This place is phenomenal. I can’t wait to go back. Real history. This place feels like you’re back in time. We ordered the tavern burger which I think tasted ok, the chicken pot pie which was the show stopper as well as the Mac and cheese and pork sliders. Those three definitely get!

In history

By Enrico T |

Very beautiful and historic place. It's worth the visit just for the location. Interesting menu and very good food. Not to be missed.

Completely disappointed

By Karen R |

The shrimp was ok, not high quality. The bartender was rude. When asked about a domestic beer he compared it to the toilet water. His humor was aggressive & disrespectful. I have traveled to 25 countries & never once was verbalized my check total & not offered my printed bill. The experience was insulting & amateurish. The manager needs to have a long talk with their waitstaff.

Skip the meal, go to the bar.

By CardsFan21 |

Nice place, decorated nicely for Christmas. Meal was very average, Fish and Chips were not good. Think they had filleted the fish improperly, majority of it was touch and chewy, fries were underwhelming. Daughter had chicken salad and the chicken was extremely tough. Son had Chicken pot pie, was not that good and hard to eat. Wife had Salmon and said it was just ok. Bison burger was improperly cooked per request for medium, Son said outside edges were ok. it was served rare in the middle. Would not go back to eat, but rest of tavern was nice. Went into the bar where they had live music, all very cozy and multiple actual bars in the facility. Would stick to those and stay away from the dining room. A lot of history in this place and enjoyed our walk around the facility to take in all of the paintings, photo's, exhibits, etc.

Very customer unfriendly

By Klant |

Excellent meal in a cozy room. Price/quality ratio is good, but very customer unfriendly. We had reserved a table, but it had not yet been prepared and the host asked us to wait in the bar. This was busy and we waited in the room. There we were rudely told by the staff that we had to make room and wait elsewhere. We said that we had been asked to wait there, the staff became angry. We then had to wait an hour for our food. Some guests even arrived later than us and were served earlier. We have translated our dissatisfaction into a minimal tip.

Great whiskey bar!

By Crisi C |

We just came in for a quick drink, no food, but man was it good! Ezra (sp?) made one of the best old fashioneds I've ever had the pleasure of consuming. So much so I ordered two. The others in our party just had wine and whiskey neat. I wish we had more time to try another cocktail from the bartender! Cool atmosphere too!

Perfect for work drinks and dinner

By JanellV |

Some colleagues of mine picked this historic downtown tavern for a happy hour and dinner. First of all, the vibe is excellent. Upon arrival, I was greeted kindly and met my party in the whiskey bar. It was around 7 on a Wednesday night and we had a table right away for drinks. The service was excellent ! We then went into the Independence room for dinner. Chicken pot pie and a lager. Fabulous. The room noise was perfect, and we could laugh and talk and not have to shout nor did we feel like we were too loud (my work peeps tend to be noisy). After dinner, the staff allowed us to roam around to the other bars and dining halls. I'm definitely coming back

Must Visit When Downtown

By RonboNJ |

If you are in lower Manhattan, Fraunces Tavern is a restaurant that you must visit for its historical significance. Walking in, you are taken back to the 1700s where everything seems so perfectly reserved from that time period. Surprisingly, food is not overly expensive. My girlfriend and I had burgers and fries which were excellent. My friends, who were vegetarians were able to find something to their liking. We enjoyed a nice cold glass of stout and the excellent service from our hostess. We were fortunate to have visited on a Friday evening around 5pm when the restaurant was empty but had started filling up after we left an hour later.

Fine Dining in a Historical Setting

By Drbrooks4337 |

Whether it is a time to splurge or just drop in for a casual burger and fries, this historic tavern is well worth a visit. We decided to help celebrate our anniversary by taking the finer offerings from the menu. Raw oysters, cider, and filet on a stone made this very special. As the stone cooked the entree to my liking, it was nice to relax and enjoy the setting. Coupled with truffled mashed potatoes, mushrooms and onions, it was a feast to behold. ‘I have never seen anyone, clean the their plate so completely’ our server exclaimed. And I was not especially hungry when I arrived.

Historical tavern in the heart of Wall Street, with great food and service.

By 749David |

We ate in the old restaurant, with all the associated history. It was awesome. The ambience and service are excellent and all our food dishes were great. One had a steak, 2 had the roast chicken and the last the Chicken Pot pie and all were perfect. This is a wonderful restaurant, well located at the bottom of Broad Street, and prices are very reasonable.

Delicious dinner and tiny cocktails

By Bridget |

Delicious & hearty dinner with the smallest cocktails. Stick to the beers when ordering here. They are delicious and the best for your wallet. The short rib “pot pie” was to die for.

Historically Delicious!

By Mountains2Sea |

Just…wow! Love the atmosphere! Tried clam chowder, served with WWBread, and a fun cocktail. Excellent service. Loved the candles & wood. Great spot to get out of the rain.

George Washington ate here - Me too!

By Jane A |

Tons of history, charming historic restaurant with rambling small rooms. Relatively simple menu with good choices for lunch. Chicken pot pie was tasty and comforting on cold, wet day. Service was efficient and friendly.

Dine in history

By CONCETTINA D |

Nice venue. Suitable for both a romantic and family dinner. Nice Christmas atmosphere. The quality food and the price in line with those of a restaurant in NY. Eating where Washington held dinner with his soldiers makes it all the more enjoyable.

Amazing history

By CHRIS M |

It’s so amazing to sit and eat and drink in the exact same spot as George Washington and his revolutionary officers. The tavern is full of historic artworks, artifacts, and vibes. The restaurant food is good quality although I don’t think anything at our table was particularly noteworthy. They also have a good selection of alcoholic beverages. There are whiskey/bourbon flights as well.

Great pub with lots of history

By John H |

My wife treated me to my birthday dinner at this pub in the financial district. We were not disappointed. Meal was great, lobster Mac & cheese and shrimp pasta in the Talmadge room. After dinner we wandered around and looked at the other historical rooms, even the Dingle Whiskey room that was roped off - but nobody stopped us from looking. We made reservations, arrived a little early and were seated immediately. Wait service was prompt and efficient. It was a Sunday evening and not too busy. Probably could have just walked in, but other nights during the summer it would probably be best to book a table.

Great Tavern and Steeped In History

By goanjock |

After visiting the Statue Of Liberty (and being inside the Crown :-)) and then Ellis Island we couldn't think of a better place to relax and have a drink with the Fraunces Tavern being so steeped in history and wow we made the right choice. From the minute we walked through the door we were blown away by the decor, lighting, ambience and sense of history. There were so many nooks and crannies in the bar area as well as beyond as well as a whisky bar and also a historic dining room. We took our seats at the bar and were served by a lovely friendly Irish guy called Luke and was so welcome. Mrs Jock started with a coffee (it had been an early start after arriving in New York the evening before) and I opted for a beer from a great selection. We just soaked up the atmosphere (great music as well) and chatted away to Luke (and each other :-)) before ordering more drinks. We then decided we liked it that much that we would have some lunch so Luke beckoned over the lady who was looking after the floor and we were soon seated at a table (we stuck with the Independence Bar as we just loved the atmosphere). Mrs Jock went for the Mac and Cheese with Applewood Bacon which she absolutely loved and I went for the Chicken Pot Pie which was absolutely huge as well delicious and so filling. I am so glad we didn't order any sides. I didn't have room for dessert but Mrs Jock went for the chocolate dessert when she also said hit the spot. We absolutely loved this tavern which was steeped in history with a fabulous atmosphere, great friendly service, delicious food and a great selection of beers.

Great place...not too far from 9/11 Memorial and Museum

By Candy C |

We went to this restaurant because it's historic and in the part of NY where we would be touring. We had a great meal--served promptly, friendly service, food was tasty.

Amazing history, great steak, what’s more to say?

By DutchDiverFrank |

What a lovely place. The history and actual building makes you feel like you are back in the 1800’s. The service staff are amazing and the filet on the stone is perfect. If you haven’t been here, go it’s only an Uber ride and you will not be disappointed. I will be back on next visit to NYC for sure.

Nice historical place

Had a really nice experience here. Restaurant full of history in the financial district. We went for lunch and we’re taken right in. Inside is nice. Menu is simple. Food is good. Now wowingly good, but good. We had fish and chips, salmon, tomato soup and grilled cheese. Enjoyed our meal. Would recommend

History and beers!

By FLHarlock |

I traveled all the way from Florida just to have a couple of beers in this establishment. I found it online and have been obsessed ever since. I love history and I love beer even more. This is my Mecca! George Washington and Alexander Hamilton hung out here and plotted to overthrow the British while drinking beers. You cannot beat that. History and beers! I had the Samuel Fraunces Ale and thoroughly enjoyed every sip. Also got a giant pretzel with beer cheese and mustard. Pretzel was big enough to be a meal. The bartender and server were amazing. Friendly and efficient. I will return here every time I’m in NYC. Highly recommended!

Chicken pot pie recommended

By gne4thewkend |

We had reservations for the piano bar but were moved to a private event. We were looking forward to the piano bar but they did call 24 hrs before to tell us so we decided to eat. This is a historic building and has so many cute rooms. We at in the main. Our first server was okay but at shift change Anna swooped in and was awesome! Chicken pot pie and clam chowder were awesome!!

A Fantastic Night at the Piano Lounge

By Liam H |

We had a great experience in the piano lounge at Fraunces Tavern. The atmosphere and food were fantastic! The pianist was extremely talented, and he played all of the songs our group requested. Our waitress was nice and helped us to decide what we ordered to eat. I had the lobster and shrimp mac and cheese which was flavorful and quite tasty. Everyone enjoyed their meals and thought the menu offerings were good. For dessert I had the chocolate mousse cake, and it was a great conclusion to the meal. My family all agreed that the experience was well worth the cost. We will definitely be back on our next trip to NYC as it is such a unique restaurant.

History + Gastronomy Mixes Well Here

By pdwarren |

Located near the downtown Financial District, Fraunces is well off the usual tourist track. That's a blessing for a quiet, comfortable meal. We went at mid-day and ordered off the lunch menu. My wife had their Grilled Cheese Sandwich (on Challah bread) and Tomato Soup combination. I ordered the Lobster and Shrimp Salad sandwich, served on a brioche roll. Both were excellent. Luckily, I got to taste her Tomato Soup, which had small bits of tomato mixed with a very creamy tomato liquid that had just the right seasoning. I think it might be the best tomato soup I've ever tasted. My sandwich was thick with large pieces of lobster and shrimp, mixed with a herbal mayonnaise dressing. Yes, I ate the whole thing. BTW, both of our orders came with some of the crispiest French Fries we've ever gotten - a real delight! We were seated in the main dining room, but later we discovered the bar had tables as well. We would have preferred that option, as the bar area seemed to be a more interesting setting -- next time! Go to Fraunces Tavern for the history, but definitely enjoy the food! It's excellent.

Historic tavern is interesting, food was okay

By Razorfish |

My wife and I had lunch at Fraunces Tavern after touring Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty on our trip to NYC this past summer. It is located in a neat historic building in the Financial District. We each had sandwiches and fries. She had the grilled chicken and I had the roast beef. They were okay but not outstanding. After visiting the tavern and seeing the rooms in the restaurant, I probably wouldn’t go back again.

Great place

By Carl S |

Being a party of 4 on a weekend trip, we went there for Sunday brunch with no expectations whatesoever. At first glance the queue outside for people wainting to get inside was a good indicator of its popularity. We were in fact quite impressed by the extablishment. The historical charm of this tavern is unique and very present. Reservations are a must. The food was excellent and so was the service. We liked it so much that we returned for dinner that same night.

Had a pleasant stay

Good value for money, good food, nice atmosfeer with very interesting history, kind waitress. Absolutely worth a visit!

Check your bill carefully.

By Explore29727904783 |

We met our daughter here for dinner as she works in NY. We were upstairs in the Piano Bar area, which was very quiet and the meal was ok. We ordered drinks and a main course. When we received the bill and paid we suddenly realised something was wrong. We are from the UK and thought the cost was really high. A glass of red wine had been charged as a bottle!! With no manager on site it took ages to refund the over payment, which we did eventually get back but spoilt the evening. Were we over charged because we were tourists or was it a genuine mistake? $70 dollars for a glass of wine was a big mistake to have made. Also there were only 2 tables eating upstairs so wasn't busy for the 2 servers.

History with a fee!

By lscCanfield_Ohio |

Historic restaurant in lower Manhattan. George Washington bade farewell to his troops here after the revolution but if you want to see the room where this happened upstairs you have to pay $7.00,Food was good service was fair. Our waiter got our bill wrong & and had to redo it twice!

Historical Tavern with great food

By Gina W |

Such an interesting place and important to the Revolutionary War. We had burgers (beef and buffalo) and both were really tasty.

Historical disappointment

By MedgirlES |

Due to popular demand of this historical spot to have a drink our excitement was immediately turned sour by arrogant cold and rude staff. We visited for 1 day from Hamilton Canada on a bus trip . Entrance greeting staff not friendly We were seated at a table but because we decided to not eat we were then told you can't sit at the table find a seat at the bar by the waitress who was not friendly . We then proceeded to sit at the bar and the bartender was not friendly . A couple who sat beside us who were dressed more posh then us recieved more attention and was served with friendlier chatter and given choices of drinks. Will not be back, once was enough to leave a bad taste. We won't reccomend as the staff here are not friendly.

Never got food

By Nick |

They forgot to put our ticket in and then the server when on break for like 30 minutes and no one was ever around to check on or help us out. Worst of all they never apologized for the mistake. Had to go find food across the street.

That Beer is Over There, No Now it is Over There

By Jay |

This is a confusing experience. The entrance and seating are all by the same staff. The menus are all on the same link from a bar code provided at the table. But don't dare try to order a drink. Certain beers are only at a bar on the lower level. One is not allowed to order and take the beer to the upper level. When I go down to a bar at the lower level, I can't get my requested beer. I'm directed to yet another bar that is less than 20 yards away. The Irish Coffee was on the menu but could not be drunk there. We never figured that one out. The food was OK, but if you want to taste the many beers they have available, plan on walking here and there and having to pay separately for each place. Very odd.

Don’t Bother

By PMD21 |

Agree with others. Stopped in after a concert. Less than 10 people in the place. Bartender seem annoyed that he actually had to make me a drink. Never again.

Amazing authentic oldest building in NYC

Walk and eat where Hamilton and Washington did! Food is outstanding surprisingly reasonable in price for the quality!

This beautiful ancient building dating back to the eighteenth century, in the midst of the skyscrapers of New York, almost sounds out of place, but it is really interesting

A must while in NYC

By Lrh137 |

If you are all a history buff , this is a must see in NYC. You can research the history on your own but the highlight to us was that Washington bid his officers goodbye here in 1783 after we had won the American Revolution. 6 years later he became our first president! Ambience and history abound, be sure to visit the museum within! Food was excellent! Best fish and chips I’ve EVER had, with the truffle Parmesan fries. My husband raved about his buffalo wings and Tavern Burger! Our server Dan took time to chat with us! From Ireland, he’s here on something like a student/work visa for a certain period of time! Great server!

Old restaurant in NYC 1762

By Romina |

I visited Fraunces Tavern for lunch and had an absolutely wonderful experience. The ambience was incredible, full of historical charm, and the staff was attentive and friendly. We ordered the chicken pot and fish and chips, and both dishes were exceptional. The chicken pot was rich and flavorful, a definite highlight of the meal. The fish and chips were perfectly crispy and fresh. Overall, the combination of amazing food, friendly service, and the historic atmosphere makes this place a must-visit. Highly recommend!

Not good for young kids!

By Stuart R |

When I arrived at the restaurant with my wife and 15-month old granddaughter at 4:30 p.m., I went straight to the host table while my wife waited outside with the stroller and baby. The host, a tall white guy with a mustache, told me to go around back to the ramp and wheel the stroller into the restaurant there. I asked if he would meet me there, and he said that he would. We wheeled the stroller around back and up the ramp. We went through the door and there was a busy bar scene and no host to be found. After waiting for a minute a looking perplexed, we were saved by a different host, a very jovial and helpful Black man. We were seated in a very quiet room, and a waiter didn't come to us for 15 minutes. We ordered our dinner "to go." Not a good restaurant for young children!

Had a Beer Here

By Thomas V |

Maybe the oldest building in Manhattan? It is definitely old and historic. Now a famous bar with some food. I met my friend here.

Amazing food at a great price!

By Colette C |

Loved this restaurant - had the best (and the cheapest!) meal of our stay in New York. Service was great and the setting was lovely. When we walked in we expected it to be very expensive as it was so grand but was cheaper than a basic Irish bar in uptown NY. If it had been closer to our hotel would have eaten here every day.

Very characteristic historical place

By Angi |

The place is a gem, dating back to 1762 and which is linked to the family of George Washington. The service is fast and the courses good, although not large. Prices a bit high, but then you contextualize where you are and you resign yourself😅

A must for history buffs in NYC

By Diana PA |

The food is not bad. But what makes this place standout is the historic significance of the place and the way they've curated it. The Tavern was set up in 1762 and many of the revolutionary leaders gathered here before, during and after the US Revolution for Independence. After the British had left US soil, this is where George Washington gathered his officers to acknowledge their contributions during the war. Then, in the years 1785-1788, the years between the end of the revolution and the ratification of the US Constitution, three government departments had their headquarters here: the Department of War, Department of Foreign Affairs, and the Board of the Treasury. That means that this building was the office of Henry Knox (Dept of War) and of John Jay (Dept of Foreign Affairs). If you are a Hamilton (musical) fan, you'll be glad you came because at least two of the opening songs are set in Fraunces Tavern. The songs that explicitly connect with Fraunces Tavern are "Aaron Burr, Sir" and "My Shot." There are other Tavern scenes in the show, but Fraunces Tavern is not explicitly mentioned except in those two.

You can feel the history in this building, it's got a lot of character and most importantly it's got great food and drink.

Good restaurant

We had a delightful time at Fraunces Tavern! Nestled in a historic landmark, the atmosphere was charming and inviting. The Irish-influenced dishes were hearty, and the craft beers were a hit with everyone. It’s a perfect spot to unwind after exploring the Financial District. We’ll definitely return!

Fabulous historical atmosphere

Go for the atmosphere and history. The food was just ok. This place is huge with so many rooms/dining areas. I was surprised by that. There's a giant bar with live music that was hopping for brunch. We were seated in the sedate Tallmadge room, which was perfect for us.

Museum part open limited hours & scaffolding all around

By PuzzleSolver855 |

We walked a long way to have lunch here and we were shuffled into the back area of the bar although sunlit tables were available in the front dining room. Then we found out the museum with the most important reason for coming was open limited days and hours. The entire outside is covered in scaffolding so we couldn't even get a good photo for memory. On top of that my sticky pudding was inedibly dry. Burger was okay. I just can't recommend this experience to anyone else.

Check your payment, a significant amount has been wrongly debited from your credit card!

Initially pleasant atmosphere and reasonable food. For 2 people main course + drink $ 104. Also given the usual tip and paid by credit card. When we return home, it appears that far too much has been debited than agreed on the signed receipt. Complained via email, but company does not respond. Very bad, doesn't feel good, nasty aftertaste!

NYC Nostalgia

Our last visit was 25 years ago & just revisited. Nothing has changed! Lobster-crab sandwich and homemade tomato soup with toasted cheese on challah bread were all excellent. Well maintained historic restaurant with 2 entrances - - one to bar area & other to dining rooms. Enjoy!

Go elsewhere

Last review was removed - so to be clear the staff at this bar are ignorant - they studiously ignored me and my wife and the couple next door to us for over 10 minutes, not even looking at us or answering our polite requests for service - rude rude rude - don’t go if you want a drink a warm welcome msg await you - elsewhere - but certainly not here !

Beautiful and historic

Went to a private party on a weekend. Place was very busy. The room, while historic and lovely to look at had no sound absorption. People who were sitting next to each other had to shout over the noise to hear each other. It was a buffet, and they opened the food very long after the party started. There was one line for the food, which took a really long time. I've been to buffets at large events where either they had 2 lines, or people could go in front or in back of the food table. Neither here. The food was okay. The service people came around often, asking if we wanted drinks. Ears were ringing when we left.

great ambiance

this is a very old restaurant - George Washington ate here and while I had hoped we would find him, that is not very realistic. The food is good comfort food in an authentic setting. The wine and beer list is adequate and the service was good. This is a restaurant for a memorable meal because of what it is and not for the food. If you have never eaten here it is a worthwhile experience

Worth it!

So good!

Delicious food (the bison burger was yummy), terrific ambiance (live jazz music on the weekends) plus it's a historical site which I wanted to visit after reading the book of negroes. Highly recommend!

Fraunces Tavern where traditional colonial dining raises to todays standards.

By Alan F |

We enjoyed the ambiance of the tavern. When we made the reservation we requested the table in front of the fireplace, which was not burning or we wouldn't have requested it, so we had a great table with a view of the room. The service was good. We recommend the Chicken Pot Pie, but next time I will take a shot at the Scotch Eggs. Good draft beer selection. The restaurant has several rooms and some alternative menus, we were in the Tallmadge Room. A nice respite from the hustle of New York City.

Go for the history not the food.

The food was average but the place had a great history and cool vibe. We were just randomly looking for a place to grab lunch and wandered in. We didn't have time to go through the museum but probably would have added something to the visit.

Historic tavern worth the visit

Stopped here for drinks and a light lunch after doing a tour of Liberty and Ellis islands. We were seated immediately in a cozy corner table. Great atmosphere in this historic building. We were lucky enough to be close to 3 person band playing some standards. We had appetizers and drinks. Everything was delicious. Recommend this place if you are in the Battery Park area.
