Great spot often overlooked as you stroll by their subterranean venue. Decided to stop in and have dinner. Ordered happy hour drinks which were a great deal. Nice dog pics on the wall and I mean every wall. Pretty cool spot. Dinner was mammas chicken, mammas meatloaf, meatballs over pasta and Caesar salad. There were a few of us eating. ... Great comfort food. Portions are very nice and also quality plus tasty. They also have trivia night on Monday's. will return.

I agree that this restaurant is, in the very least a 4/5. However, the reason why I give this 5/5 is because it deserves full marks for its outstanding service AND its value for money. I don't know how someone can say the food is average if you paying $16 for a plate of calamari which four people can share! Highlights 1. Ryan, the amazing waiter, who was so so kind to everyone and fulfilled every need. For example, my cousin, who has hearing problems, wanted no salt on anything and he made sure this was accommodated. He was also very patient as seven of us ordered 2. Starters: Mussels, calamari and homemade crab cakes were excellent. Nachos tasted as they usually do 3. Mains: Lamb chops were succulent and highly praised, lobster ravioli was excellent. I personally had the mad and cheese with pulled pork- this was $15 and could have served two people 4. Dessert (God knows how we managed it): Gelato for all. The Mint Choc Chip was especially delightful Overall, the bill came to $300 for seven people. This included 4/5 shared starters and desserts and everyone have individual mains and a couple of sides as well as a couple of diet drinks, two bottles of wine and1/4 bottle of prosecco. The extra tip was well deserved for the excellent service.

Wandered over for lunch from the American Museum of Natural History. It was a Sunday, and they were offering their brunch prix fixe menu. It offered tremendous value. For $16.95 you had a choice of drink (Mimosa, Bellini, bloody Mary, orange juice), entrée, homemade muffins, coffee or tea. With the homemade muffins came a delicious butter infused with either cherries or strawberries. I had the grilled chicken sandwich which in reality was two sandwiches and my husband had the 8 ounce burger. Both were delicious. If you love dogs you'll feel welcomed here. Lined along the walls are framed photos of various dogs, I presume belonging to local patrons. Service was great. Considering the place was packed we did not have to wait too long for a table. The waiter was friendly and attentive. The service was prompt but we also did not feel rushed. We will definitely go back on a return trip to New York City.

Fred's has a really cute and quaint vibe. The food is good and well-priced. I took advantage of the brunch special, which I think was $18 for coffee, an entree, and a Bloody Mary (or mimosa). The Bloody Mary's were pretty good. I would recommend for a good local spot.

Fred's is a great local restaurant for visitors to NY. It's always crowded, and it's got a huge bar area where you can eat if you'd like. We ate at the bar, and I had a lamb burger with sweet potato fries. Yummy! The owner is really friendly and all of the staff are nice. There are fun photos of dogs all over the walls. Definitely stop in if you're in the area.

Four people in from the street, the restaurant was about 3/4 full at 19:00, which we considered a very good sign considering record breaking cold outside. Had fish cakes with a spicy sauce, great. Beef burger, chicken burger and chicken fajita were also ordered. Plentiful amounts of food. The kids and i ordered dessert. Double chocolate cake, cheesecake and chocolate brownie. Lucky we had a couple of blocks back to the hotel

Just a nice neighborhood eats. I was staying at 87th around the corner. This is a small place, food, service and atmosphere all good. I was by myself so I chose to sit at the bar and watch people and the games on TV.

If you're looking for good 'ol comfort food in a lovely NYC neighborhood, Fred's is the perfect choice. All of their food is good, but the mac and cheese is the best. And save room for dessert, the brownie sundae is Delois's with a hot cup of coffee. We go every year on my birthday, and you'd think we were there every week - everyone is so friendly, servers all work together to please the customer and everyone is happy!

I've been a few times at Fred's and I had a great time. I remember spending a whole day there in the middle of a blizzard and my friends and I we had a blast. Bartenders are super friendly and nice and they have good American food.

Went back having visited a couple of years ago on our first visit to the city from the UK. We were there solely to add a photo of our lovely dog Blue to the hundreds of others that cover every wall!! - and the guy that took the photo from us was thrilled we had took the time to bring it xx. The place is away from the touristy places and has a great atmosphere. The servers are friendly. Food is good; usual generous portions and served piping hot. Teens both had Mac n Cheese and enjoyed it. Unfortunate won't be visiting NYC again but hope every dog lover visits and enjoys it as much as we did.

Couldn't get into the current hot spot across the street, so stumbled down into Fred's. Eclectic menu, from great crab cakes to Shepard's pie, along with other classics. Excellent neighborhood place, good food, good ambiance, and a lovely story with the name. I'm a cat girl, but fell in love with Fred! Am surprised it took me this long to find it, I'm in NYC at least once a year, and they've been around for almost twenty? Went back twice during our stay.

We reserved a Thanksgiving dinner at Fred's and since we have never been here, we did not know what to expect. And it was such a pleasant surprise! We were greeted warmly, we got a good table, the staff was friendly. The service was impeccable. The dinner started on time, food came fast, and there was always someone to serve us when we wished for more. Our 7-year-old son had some special wishes and the staff was so good to him. And the food: delicious! The portions were large. We got everything we could wish for our Thanksgiving. Thank you Fred's! We will be back.

The food at Fred's was good— the restaurant is great for dog lovers because the restaurant is filled with photos of dogs from all over the world or from people just visiting the restaurant the pasta and the sautéed vegetables for the kids was great and the fajitas were awesome ,the chips and guacamole we had was good . The happy hour drinks the wine and the cocktails were great as well overall I think it's a great little cozy place in uptown This place is good for vegetarians too Btw Fred is the name of his dog

A cosy place with great service, love the dog-story behind the place! Super delicious chili con carne, spicy and heavy, like a perfect bar meal. The straff was very welcoming and even gave us a cheesecake on the house!

Had a good meal at Fred's during our stay in new york. Not the best we have had, but no reason to complain. The food was of good standard, worth booking a table because it was very busy.

Fred's is one of those great neighborhood places where you can enjoy good food and drinks in a lively setting. It is also a place where you can get a meal after 10:00 pm. The atmosphere is friendly, although when the place is busy the service slows a bit. We enjoyed some house cocktails and specialty burgers, veggie and salmon. This is not haute cuisine, but good solid fare. If you are a dog lover, you will enjoy the dog theme. As Fred's says: Come! Sit! Stay!

Great food, lovely service and brilliant decor. Definitely one for dog lovers 😊 loved that the walls were covered on photos of dogs. The staff were great 😊

You really can't say more then you just gotta try Fred's. Its a local haunt that has all its walls covered in dog photos since its named after 'Fred' the dog. The drinks are great and not too pricey, the food is amazing for a little pub and not to pricey either. Really a warm and inviting atmosphere with great staff that act like they've know you forever even if you are a tourist.

We visited for Saturday brunch a couple of weeks ago. The salmon benedict was absolutely delicious. The staff are amazing - friendly and attentive. Especially the host, Richard, who was seating people and helping the wait staff as well. During a sudden unexpected downpour of heavy rain, Richard went out of his way to help outside diners make their way inside, getting soaked himself in the process. The atmosphere in this establishment is exactly what one wants to experience in a "real" New York City neighborhood eatery. Great food, cold delicious drinks, and a sense of commaraderie among staff and patrons. From the streeside dining area to the expsoed brick inside, Fred's is a quintessential NYC dining experience. The dog backstory adds to the atmosphere. We are thinking about sending some photos of our dogs to adorn the walls.

Although we had to wait a bit, my 2 grandkids and our party of 5 had a satisfying lunch- kids had melted cheese and spicy chicken fingers while the grownups had turkey club and a chicken sandwich- the fries were ok but a bit limp. The waitstaff was super friendly and helpful. We had plenty of crayons to color with while we waited. Fun!

Fred's is a characterful restaurant and the reason behind its name is quite charming. The pictures of so many dogs on the walls are nice. The Mac and cheese is really good, the buffalo chicken mac and cheese is really good. The staff are friendly and helpful

Lovely spot and great food. Service was fast and food was great. Call ahead and check out whether busy. Menu was extensive and enough there for anybody to find something

Where can six people and a dog go for Sunday brunch in Manhattan where they will feel welcome and treated like old friends coming for years? Fred's! First of all, dogs are welcome guests as pictures of dogs line the restaurant's inner walls. We sat outside where our friends' dog was immediately given a bowl of water. Our server, Celia (ask for her, she's amazing) was not only attentive and knowledgeable but had a great sense of humor. I ordered an omelet with artichokes, sundried tomatoes, and gruyere, and, when my wife ordered the exact same thing, Celia quickly responded that they had just run out! Needless to say, this started off a fabulous experience. All entrees were served promptly, correctly, and hot, and were delicious. The owner/manager, David, came over several times, not only to check on us but to engage us in familiar conversation, something it was obvious came naturally to him. We left feeling a sense of belonging, knowing we would absolutely come back again soon. In a neighborhood where there is stiff competition for dining dollars, Fred's understands that there is more to the overall experience than just the food. It is the environment, created by owners who care, and by interested, smart, servers who understand the importance of making a connection. Don't miss this unique opportunity in a terrific location!

Took two grandkids and found more of a Pub with food, not a family place. Don't go on a weekend night if you are in a hurry.

Great food, better than great staff and vibe - fantastic experience! If you are after a classic local NY experience this is it! Doesn’t get any better than walls filled with dog pics!!! Unique friendly and well worth a visit!

Great atmosphere, great food and friendly staff. The owner even came and sat with our family for a short while. The meatloaf and spinach fettuccine were fantastic.

Wonderful staff, great bar, good food, decent prices and a wonderful vibe. A wonderful place for friends/family. My high school buddies and I meet there 3-4 times a year. Excellent place!

Great place - had a really good burger and strong cocktails. Inside the walls are covered in dog photos which is super cute.

The whole family loves this spot. They accommodated the kids request and they were all happy. We loved the black bean soup, lamb burger and the salmon. So good and the area was great as well! Close to Central Park.

We go hear a lot as it is our go to place for casual meal and drink. Burgers, Pulled Pork, Mac & Cheese are all good. If you are on the Upper West Side - stop by.

What a great fun place. A testament to beloved Labrador Fred. Every room packed with pictures of loved pets. Food is great, don't miss Mac and cheese. Staff energetic and fun. Go and enjoy.

Our family had another great meal at Fred's last month. We were greeted at the door and quickly shown to a table even though they looked like they were in the middle of a super busy brunch rush. The waitstaff was as friendly and caring as ever, taking care of our 85 yo mother's dairy and gluten concerns as though she were family. Our food arrived quickly and we all loved our dishes! Some of our favorites: the mac & cheese ("the best ever!" says our 17yo son), the wings and the burgers. We highly recommend Fred's, our favorite spot for great comfort food!

We were visiting family in the neighborhood and stopped here for dinner. Our kids love mac and cheese so they all ordered it off the kid's menu. Unfortunately, none of them liked the taste of it as it was made with stronger, more pungent cheeses, not the usual mild cheeses used in kid's mac and cheese. Wish the kids' menu would have mentioned the type of cheese used, since its not what one would expect from kids' mac and cheese. Its mentioned in the adult menu but not on the kids' menu and none of the adults were getting mac and cheese so we didn't notice it. We spent $40 on kids' mac and cheese and no one liked it-disappointing. Otherwise, our meals were good and the atmosphere was fun.

Fred’s is a super bar and restaurant with great service and super food. Really enjoyable atmosphere and reasonable prices.

Upon arrival we looking for a quick and nice meal. Fred's offers tables inside and outside. Due to the weather we sat inside in a very lively room. I think that we were lucky to get in without reservations. The restaurant offer the typical US dishes like burgers and mac and cheese. The quality was good but nothing special or upscale. u will not leave hungry, the portions are also US size.

We found this delightful restaurant on our first full night. The service was warm and friendly, the food delicious and reasonably priced for the location. We enjoyed our first visit so much, we returned for our last night. We would definitely revisit and highly recommend for a relaxing evening.

I have been here quite a few times including dinner, brunch and twice for Thanksgiving. Food is always great and service is friendly and quick.

Fred's is a locals sort of place. Down a few stairs, somewhat dark, been around for 20+ years. They pour a decent drink and I enjoyed my hamburger. Relaxing spot to pull up to a bar.

Nice neighborhood tavern with a "Cheers" feeling to it. Excellent food with a good beer & wine selection. Prices for New York, not bad, either.

Made reservations for Thanksgiving that included five adults, and two children, age 6. The price for dinner was $46.95. When I asked for the children's price the manager told me THEY HAD TO PAY FULL (!!) because they were already 6 years old! (They barely finish a peanut butter sandwich!) I asked if we could, perhaps, use a children's menu. He flatly said, "No!" ... that was the end of that! Do NOT go here for Thanksgiving. (You will NOT feel thankful:):) My suggestion? Go to Arte Cafe on 73rd near Columbus. The have a delicious Thanksgiving special for $48 per ADULT. Children are welcome to choose any appetizers/dishes from the regular menu. They seem to actually LIKE kids here.

went here twice on recent visit to New York. Warm and friendly atmosphere, staff pleasant and very profession. Cocktails were good and not overpriced, food (at the bar as we did not have a restaurant reservation) was tasty and generous.

I really wanted to love this place because it is adorned with my favorite subject, dogs! We went for brunch and waited uncomfortably for 15 minutes until our table was ready. A good sign because it was so busy, it had to be good! Right? I ordered a Cobb Salad. The vegetables were not fresh. I could tell they were cut hours and hours ago, perhaps yesterday? The cucumbers, red and yellow peppers, tomatoes were dry? I asked for a protein, chicken. It was very dry and had a bad smell. My date had a burger that he “ would NOT order again”! I really wanted to like this place, I will not return. I give them this, it is really charming inside. Service was good.

The decor / ambience inside is great. I got the sausage farfalle (not sure the exact name, sorry), it was absolutely great. Beer selection is also very good and service as well. A walk around the neighborhood is recommended afterwards.

Went here on the recommendation of the hotel. It turned out to be a fun place, very friendly, many locals, and great food! Try their salads or chicken marsala.

We were wandering around the crowded upper West Side when we saw Fred's. The gentleman at the door, (actually, on the sidewalk), welcomed us in and we were seated immediately - and I wondered if that was a bad sign, as there was a bit of a wait at most places in the area. My fears could not have been more unfounded. The menu was varied, beer choices good and service was fine. I got the grilled pork chops, which were very good, and my wife had salmon, which was also very good. (We ordered a couple of Guiness Stouts on tap.... which turned out to be flat. The waitress reported this to the bar, and they changed kegs immediately and replaced our glasses right away. The whole experience was very satisfactory - well recommended!

Came here for a late breakfast which they label as brunch. Had a prix fixe menu with lots of options for everyone. Kids had pancakes and French toast which looked delish, the omelet was of a good size and I enjoyed the bagel and lox platter (big enough to share). Waitress was friendly and accommodating - our large party probably drove her crazy with requests, but she continued to smile. Loved the casual atmosphere and great décor - the walls are covered in framed photos of previous patrons' dogs! Since we were in town to attend the Westminster Dog Show, it seemed very apropos. When we arrived around 10, there was still some available seating, but by the time we left, the line was out the door - speaks well for the popularity of the place.

Had a meal our first night in New York here it was just down the road from our hotel. Staff very polite ,food excellent and atmosphere just right. Next two nights tried other places but returned to Fred's for fourth and fifth nights. Other places just didn't give us the same value and experience.

I found Fred's through a local NYC blog on good spots to eat in the Upper West Side and it did not disappoint. The restaurant has a fun atmosphere and the walls are decorated with tons of pictures of dogs. The menu has a lot of great options, and I went with the meatloaf, which was very tasty. The service was friendly and attentive. Although we were there for dinner, I hear they also have a great breakfast/brunch. We would definitely return!

We got the turkey burger and grilled chicken sandwich with french fries and loved it! Fries needed salt but delicious with a little salt on them. The grilled chicken sandwich with tomatoes amd avocado was fantastic!! Will definitely go back for sure

Terrific neighborhood establishment, has been here on Amsterdam for years. What I love most about it the cozy, intimate atmosphere below street level. The chili is excellent. We've also ordered the fried chicken for takeout numerous times.

After spending an afternoon in the city, our daughter decided to leave the crowded tourist area and eat on the upper west side. She picked Fred’s and they were very accommodating to our 7, 5 and 3 year old grandchildren. Food quality was quite good although the smoked cream sauce that was on my spinach fettuccine was a little too rich for me. They did have a large selection and all of our group, including the kids enjoyed what they ordered. Our server was excellent but since my daughter paid the bill, I don’t recall his name.

Great comfort food well prepared. Nothing fancy but good. A neighborhood staple that deserves a visit

This was my second visit to Fred's, but it had been well over a year. Am happy to say that the friendly reception, personal service and over the top bar food is still excellent. Went for brunch and had pancakes and Huevos rancheros and definitely hit the spot. Good bloody mary.

Very varied menu which suits all preferences. The team that wait on you are both accommodating and friendly. Would recommend to anyone looking for something a bit different away from the hustle and bustle. The amount of dog photos are amazing

Delicious food, great service. Atmosphere is very casual. Great place to hang out & enjoy a great meal.

Nice location in the Upper West Side, a couple of blocks away from AMNH. We went with a party of 8 (3 adults + 5 kids, ages 12-16), after a day of sightseeing in New York. Easy to reserve a place, even though it was a bit disappointing that we couldn't sit outside. The inside is a bit dark and a bit loud. Many have commented about the decor, with the hundreds of dog pictures on every single inch of the wall. That gives the place a very distinctive feel. Service was friendly, but quite slow. Food was more or less what we expected: not high cuisine, but fresh ingredients, decent quality, reasonably sized portions, and a lot of variety to choose from. Prices pretty much average. Bottom line: a good place to go with the family after visiting Central Park and the museums.

Cosy trendy bar with great atmosphere on the Upper West Side. Named after Fred, a black labrador retriever seeing eye dog. The walls are covered in pet photos. Friendly staff and good pub grub.

Good food, lots of choice, fast & good service. Nice interior especially for dog lovers! Good price/quality. Certainly worth a visit!

Went here a couple of times and was very good. Friendly staff and some different ales to try. The lobster stuffed pasta was very good. Would recommend

outdoor seating, we brought our dog and the burgers are very good. Lots of pictures of dogs inside. service is very good.

We tried it tonight with our 2 grandsons. One wanted mac and cheese and a salad from the menu. They wouldn't substitute a Caesar Salad for a dinner salad. Had to ask twice for bread. Had to ask for drinks to be refilled. Had to ask for check. They were not busy. Mozzarella sticks were cold in the middle.

Near to where we were staying, so thought we'd give it a go and were sold when we found out the namesake Fred was a failed seeing eye dog, as my mum is a guide dog owner. VERY dark inside which for some could be a problem. The walls were covered in photos of patrons dogs, with the option to bring a framed pic of your own dog. A dog lovers paradise! Went on Taco Wednesday and tried the chicken and steak tacos. They were tasty but very small portions; definitely more of a starter size (3 small tacos) so might reconsider if you're feeling hungry. A pitcher of Sangria was $40 which seemed pretty pricey in comparison to other places but the pitcher was deceptively large and we definitely got at least 10 glasses from it. Overall, nothing to write home about but certainly worth the visit if you're staying nearby.

Decor: Warm, with large bar in one room and tables in another few rooms sub-street level. Dark woods, exposed stone & brick. If you love dogs, you won't tire of floor to ceiling photos of them on the walls! Menu: Mac 'n cheese is their specialty, with various add-in choices. Burgers, salads, fish, other beef & fish choices, lamb. Plenty of starters from which to choose. Emphasis on comfort food items. Service: Adequate. There seemed to be a mix-up initially with regard to which server was tending to our table (one crowding out another?), but it didn't effect our service. Quality: The mac 'n cheese with pulled pork add-in was excellent - a version prepared with cheeses more suited to an adult palate. The crab cakes were very good as well. Good portions. Value: Very good - priced well for NYC.

Cozy burger joint on the UWS. Great place for brunch/lunch if going to the Museum of Natural History. We loved the burger and the caeser salad!

Good service, huge portions. The breakfast was really really delicious. The decor with all the dog pictures on the wall is amazing and made this place for us. I would definitely recommend!!

We had a really nice dinner here, I had the cobb salad and my husband had mac and cheese, both were delicious. We sat outside and had a very pleasant evening. Friendly and efficient staff.

We love Fred's--it's a cheerful, welcoming place with hearty, satisfying food; the ambiance is great. Of course, you'll want to have the mac and cheese or a burger. And be sure to take time to look over all the photos of beloved dogs that fill every nook and cranny. Fred's is a reliable, happy go-to restaurant.

Take a few steps down into this homey, popular American food restaurant. My only complaint was one that annoyed my a lot. A proper analogy would be one where you saw on your favorite restaurant's dessert menu chocolate chip vanilla ice cream. You ordered it, and, although you saw some chocolate chips, it had no taste of chocolate chips. That feeling you might get from that experience was what I got when I had their "Onion Mashed Potatoes" (needless to say, with no taste of onion) which came with a tasty "Mom's Meatloaf." An earlier order of black bean soup was good after I sent back the lukewarm soup to the kitchen to be later served hot. The highlight of the meal was the Fudge Brownie served warm with my choice of ice cream (vanilla), which I requested to be served on the side to keep the warmth in the Fudge Brownie. Except for the Fudge Brownie, nothing that I had would I call gourmet food, although it was good where stated as such.

The staff and food are AMAZING. It is a fun atmosphere. When I was there Billy Joel was playing (not in person) and the whole place was singing. It was KaRaZy fun...A must when you visit the city..

We cancelled a reservation at the Marriott in Times Square in favour of Fred's, what a great choice. On the evening of our visit the place was really busy with local runners. We were given a table immediately, staff were polite, friendly and helpful. Great knowledge of the cocktail menu and helped us to choose drinks to go with our food. Food was served piping hot, well presented and very tasty!! Good prices, overall a great experience 👍🏽

Really enjoyed visiting this restaurant, lots of choice on the menu but went with Mac & Cheese and was not disappointed! Great portions would recommend

Friendly, relaxed bar/ restaurant. Good, honest and filling American fare with huge portions. My daughter especially liked her Mac and Cheese and my Cobb salad was plentiful, fresh and tasty. Nothing fancy or pretentious but very nice place.

Can't understand all the rave reviews on here...unless people have no taste buds! Lived in the neighborhood 40 years and my first time here. Ordered fajitas that weren't even fajitas. Rubber chicken and raw vegetables. What were these people thinking? Run, do not walk, away from this place. Do not waste your money.

Great food, great service, beautiful atmosphere! Absolutely love the decorations in the restaurant, all doggies' photos! We had meatball linguine and pork chops seasoned with apples, topped with mashed potatoes as sides.

My husband and I had dinner and we were both very pleased with our selections. I enjoyed the chipotle mac and cheese with broccoli. It was a bit spicy but paired perfectly with their delicious sangria. My husband had the seared yellowfin tuna which was done exactly to his liking. It was paired with mashed potatoes and spinach which I couldn't resist tasting. The atmosphere is casual and children are welcome. I would go again!

We have been going to Fred's for many years, when visiting the Upper West Side, for dinner, lunch, and brunch, as well as late night snacks. The theme of the bar/restaurant is dogs, as the walls are filled with photos of customers' dogs, many no longer with us. We placed a wonderful photo of our three Labradors on the wall near the bar, and it's fun to visit. Burgers, salads, omlettes, and other bar fare is the order of business, with some good soups and specials. Nice beer and wine by the glass selection, and a great, fun neighborhood ambience.

Good spot for families serving. Wholesome. Foods. Keep de seem to like he place as it is comfortable. For you gem and the food is familiar . If you do not let me kiss da dog not come here.

Very comfortable, chilled place to relax and catch up with friends. Not noisy. Very hospitable and friendly personnel. Not pretentious. Good burgers and comfort food in a nice venue at the upper west side.

Was looking for a good burger in New York and went to Fred's and had an amazing cheese burger, really filling and great quality. Shared desert of chocolate fudge brownie as wasn't much room left.

We did brunch at Fred's and it was a little pricey, but the food was good. $25 for two pancakes and bacon seems steep, and the bloody mary's were $12 and about 10 oz. The food and drinks were great, but I think its better to go there expecting the small servings and drinks for the price. The place itself is darling, with pictures of dogs everywhere and great staff. Very kind to our friend's baby and the wait staff was prompt and friendly. Overall a good experience.

Cute restaurant with good food. I hadn't been here in awhile, and was happy to see the food and vibe was still good.

One of the few places where the bartenders are nice to people. They don't act like they are doing you a favor by them pouring you a drink. The bar may be a little tight but it's a great place to sit at the bar and eat. Also, if you love dogs, the place is loaded with pictures of them

High hopes for this establishment, after such positive reviews, though this was not much more than mediocre for me. Looking for a fun and tasty gathering spot to meet friends for dinner, I thought I'd found it here based on previous reviews. On some points the positive praise was right on: The dog decor doesn't disappoint; there are adorable dog photos galore. This is a comfy place, casual and warm. Loved the window seats with the cushions. But two main factors were disappointing, the food and reservation/seating. Our group tried a variety of dishes, and though the food was good, it wasn't great. Sort of like eating at a chain restaurant in a mall. Overall pretty bland. The waitstaff and bus staff were attentive and worked well together, and although the host was nice, he didn't do the one thing we hoped...get us to a table in reasonable time. After making a reservation, I can't really understand why we had to wait for over 30 minutes when we arrived (exactly on time). It seemed as if it made no difference that we made the reservation at all. Five parties were seated before us, so I'm left assuming that poor planning was behind the delay. This is a cute neighborhood place that clearly has a loyal following. With a little bit of effort it could easily be better than average.

We had our puppy with us and were waiting for a friend when we decided to wait here for her. We only had drinks... beer and sangria which was very cold and good!. The server was very friendly and got me a bowl of water for Cosmo when I asked. This is a definitely a pet friendly location because when I went inside the place was filled with pictures of people's pets even the bathrooms! Love this place!

A friend brought me here for dinner - the first thing you'll notice are all the pictures of dogs plastering the walls. Fred is a dog, he and all dogs are honored here with framed photos on the walls. The atmosphere is intimate and cozy with a candlelit touch. As for the food - wow, regular burgers are awesome, but the veggie avocado burger is a delight - thick and juicy, layers of flavor. Their fries are really good too. Haven't tried any other menu options yet, but my eyes are on the mac & cheese. Sure, Fred's is not cheap at all, but it is worth it! Special note: Narragansett beer is served here - this is a not bad at all, but worth a try if you're a fan of the movie "Jaws", as this is the very same beer Quint consumes. :)

We called into this local on upper West side following my wife's research as we wanted somewhere for all the family to eat which wasn't too far away. It certainly has an informal local feel which isn't forced and was pretty busy when we visited for dinner at the weekend - it was certainly quaint and surprisingly a bit like an English pub with doggy pictures everywhere. Quite basic but homely. The staff were great and very attentive, couldn't fault them. The portions were quite large and the menu pretty basic with the emphasis on US cooking. The food was decent enough but nothing out of the ordinary I'm afraid. The great service though makes it a 4 rather than an average joe 3

Fred's has good American style food. Great for Brunch (with a good brunch deal!) and dinner. They also do good holiday dinners. Very comfortable atmosphere - with a British pub feel inside. Friendly, relaxed, unpretentious. One of our very favorites in the neighborhood.

We had a nice dinner at Fred’s. It seemed to be a neighborhood restaurant with lots of locals and families. The atmosphere was warm and cozy. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The service was good. The menu offered a large variety of options with something for everybody. The food was very good and the portions were generous. The prices were reasonable.

fred's is a local bar/restaurant where one can get decent pub grub and a bit more in a relaxed setting .

Go here every time I'm in NY (twice or three times a year)...Food is always great. Staff are professional and go out of their way to make changes to the menu if you want. The atmosphere is so adorable. Pic's of puppies/dogs on every available wall space. Always easy to get cabs when you're done to go to your next destination... love this place. :)

We happened to stumble upon this restaurant by chance and it was really great. The food was delicious, the macaroni cheese was to die for. The service was really good too.

Really enjoyed a Saturday early evening meal, place was really busy. Service was exceptional although pretty cramped dining space. Would happily go back

Two visits to Fred's this time when my wife and I were in New York. First for dinner on Tuesday night with a old friend, all of us enjoyed our food and drinks. Back again for brunch on Saturday with two more friends. I tried the huevos rancheros for the first time, and loved them. My wife had perfectly prepared eggs benedict. We have eaten there several times, and have never been disappointed. It's a great place to go when your on the Upper West Side.

We have had several lunches/dinners at Fred's over the years. The restaurant is casual and has ample seating. We were three generations having lunch there recently, and everyone of us was pleased with the choices. The food is consistently good. My lunch was the best quiche I have ever had.

There were quite a few people eating outside at Fred's, so we opted for an inside table. Once inside, we walked down a few stairs and then we noticed all the dog photos. The restaurant is dedicated to Fred--a female guide dog that didn't pass the final exam--and also to all dogs like her. I suppose you would have to call this a family restaurant as there were several families there with the kids. But, I saw plenty of couples and friends here as well. Happy hour is 5-7 and the bar stays open to 2am and beyond. Kitchen is open 5-11pm during the week and 5-12pm on Friday and Saturday. We started with spicy wings that I asked to be cooked extra-crispy. The cook got it right for $11.95. I ordered the salmon burger and my wife had the regular burger, $16.95 and $14.95 respectively. Both came with fries and a delightful, mixed green salad with a balsamic dressing. Very nicely done! Service was quick and attentive. There are many things to choose from on the menu: Fried calamari--$11.95, chips with salsa--$11.95, Chicken parmigiana--$18.95, Mushroom ravioli--$15.95, Grilled Lamb Chops--$26.95, Mom's meatloaf--$18.95, 140z shell steak--$27.95, Crab Cakes--$13.95 for two, Tequila shrimp--$21.95, Saturday and Sunday brunches and, of course, desserts like the Industrial Strength Fudge Brownie "Topped with the Gelato of your choice and Dripping with Chocolate Sauce" for $8.95. I like this place. It's a convenient and friendly neighborhood bar and restaurant with a nice array of food choices and good vibe. Will certainly return to sample other menu selections.

For years, Fred's was a welcoming, go-to place on the Upper West Side for homestyle food: good brunches, mac 'n' cheese, heirloom tomato soup, etc...the operable word here being "was." Sadly, the quality of food served at Fred's seems to have suffered tremendously with the recent change in ownership, and I won't be returning. I had dinner with two other people, and we all agreed that it was seriously sub-par and--even if the food had been decently prepared--overpriced. The mac 'n' cheese which used to be creamy and flavorful beneath a perfectly golden, crispy cap, is now bland and no better than Kraft from a box. When my so-called crispy tofu salad arrived drenched in dressing, our server kindly offered to bring me the same with dressing on the side, but sadly, the dressing was the only element of the salad with any flavor. The rest of the bowl--which used to be full of satisfyingly crispy veggies and tofu--has absolutely no flavor and very little crunch. Several servers and a manager repeatedly asked us how everything was, and we had to tell them the truth: our entire dinner was extremely disappointing.

This is a favorite for my wife and I and we wish they were open for lunch so we could enjoy more often. Delicious food, great service, fun atmosphere, and great UWS location.

Remember those places with walls filled with pix of, you name it, opera stars, sports stars, famous people, famous friends, etc.? Well, Fred's does it with dogs, tons of them, on every available apace. Even if you are not a dog lover, you can't help but be charmed. The service is friendly, prompt and warm. My linguine with chopped clam was excellent, and my wife's veggie quesadilla was very good. We could return, no question.

Met up with a long time friend at Fred’s, used to be one of our normal meeting places for more than 20 years. As we sat at the table, the female server said we had to order food along with our drinks. Two other tables had drinks but no food, that put a sour taste in our mouths. We also ordered buffalo wings, they were massive!!! So allow people to have drinks only and don’t have the staff try and be sneaky about it, Dave!

Coming from a world of mediocre service Fred's was a pleasant surprise. Great people and great food. If I lived here, this would be my local hangout. This place hits the mark on all counts.... Food quality, portion size, reasonable prices and great service. We'll be back!

Recently had dinner here. We have an 85-pound goldendoodle and were happy he could join us as we dined outdoors. The wait staff treated him, and us, well. Service was exceptionally friendly. It did take too long to get our food. We very much enjoyed our burgers, soup, salads, and sweet potato fries. Very casual and comfortable place. Dining room and bar are below street level. Prices fair. Serving size more than adequate. Heat lamps would be great. Will definitely return.

What a wonderful, reasonably priced restaurant. The menu has everything you could want and the desserts are fabulous.. We met David who owns the place. He is a nice guy and really cares if you like his food. in Mahattan that is amazing. my salad was fresh and had lots of chicken. My husband and daughter loved what they had..You can't go wrong here.

I am writing to describe the experience that my wife and recently had at Fred’s. Note that as a long-time neighborhood resident, I have frequented Fred’s even in its earlier location on Columbus Avenue as well as its current iteration on Amsterdam Avenue for years. However, as much as I generally liked the ambiance and service of Fred’s, and sometimes met friends there, the quality of the food being served has become a serious issue for both my wife and myself, as a matter of taste as well as quality related to health. On the evening of Tuesday, January 14th, we stopped in for a light supper around 7:30 p.m. We each ordered a veggie burger with sweet potato fries and the accompanying bit of field greens salad. My wife had the only French rose wine on the menu and I had a Guinness, then another one. For this, we paid $68.00, including tip. What did we get for our money? OK, the ambiance was fine, although we were initially surprised by how few other diners were there. Service was friendly. But the veggie burgers were a mushy, soft mess with no flavor whatsoever. We loaded them with ketchup to make them somewhat palatable. The sweet potato fries were soft and soggy, and seemed disgustingly “old” as if they had been sitting around all day and had been salvaged for our meal. The salad seemed OK, but we don’t know now if it was sanitary. As for drinks, my wife’s glass of “French Rose” was in the cheapo rot-gut category and she bravely (and quite politely!) attempted to salvage it with the addition of some ice cubes and an ounce or so of cold water, but it still was rot-gut, now colder and slightly diluted. As for my Guinness drinks, the amateurish bartender had no idea how to draw or “build” a Guinness, since even after a substantial wait, both arrived foamy and still fizzy. Very bad. Take it from someone who has spent a bit of time in Dublin. Worse, after we got home, my wife was relaxing and within an hour or so, she bolted up and raced to the bathroom for a vomit episode of Fred's dinner. Fred's should be so proud. We both suffered stomach cramps and gastric distress for the rest of the evening and even into the next morning. Near the mid-point of our meal, we both wondered out loud, “Why are we eating this horrible food?” Well, we tried to tough it out, but the results were quite unpleasant and unhealthy for both of us. We were obviously too polite for our own good. And, yes, let me remind you that we paid $68.00 for this nasty experience. Both my wife and I are seasoned international travelers who have worked extensively in the national and international travel and hospitality sectors. Let’s just say that we’re not part of the cheap-o cheeseburger crowd, but know food service and quality on many levels, from the quite elegant (Paris, Vienna, Florence, Napa Valley, etc.) to the most casual, even the delicious street food of Barcelona and Capetown. Fred’s was once on my A-List as a fine, if casual, neighborhood dining experience, but it totally let us down. And, I no longer wonder why there were so few diners in Fred's parlour that evening. So, how do you explain “the fall of Fred’s” to us? An apology would be a good start. We're still waiting for that after having contacted the management. Perhaps it is correct to say that Fred's kitchen has cooked its own goose. And, yes, for this nasty experience we paid $68.00. For us, Fred's is a must to avoid.

Fred's was a spot we came to meet with a few friends to celebrate our marriage, and everything was simply superb! The food was spot on, the service was always attentive, and of course, the vibe was the loud buzzing of a NYC restaurant - perfection. Would definitely come back!

Fred's is a down to earth gem on the Upper West Side, friendly helpful staff and excellent, freshly prepared food. We enjoyed it so much we returned for a second evening and the food and service were just as good. Our party had a food allergy and a food intolerance and the restaurant were able and willing to accommodate both. Large menu with good selection and choice and a great range of cocktails. A must go particularly for dog lovers due to the decor!

My husband and I drove from Cape Cod to surprise our son at dinner for his 30th birthday. They don’t take reservations but we were able to be seated immediately at a table for 4 and the hostess was wonderful and agreed to play along when my son and his girlfriend arrived claiming to have a reservation so she could guide them to our table. Our server Justin was fantastic! Very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. The food was delicious. The award winning mac n cheese was delicious and I am very picky about mac n cheese. I did order the chocolate lava cake for dessert and there was no “lava” to be found, more of a warm brownie, but that’s the only negative.

Server extremely inexperienced and didn’t seem to have a clue on how to take orders or what was actually going on in the restaurant. Firstly took our drinks orders to be told 5 mins later that they had no carbonated drinks available, had to settle for water!! When we ate our appetiser the server neglected to clear to table for the entrée and as a result we had zero space. Food was very basic and tasteless, my son also felt quite ill afterwards. I would not recommend

Fred's is a great neighborhood restaurant. It is large and the menu is varied enough so that you can get a variety of foods from burgers to fish to salads. The atmosphere is fun as the walls are covered with pictures of visitors' pet dogs, though it is not a fancy restaurant.

My brother and I were in NYC for the first time and searched for a restaurant outside that is not too pricy but still good. The food was not bad at all and like the other reviews say, portions are large. Gluten free options available as well. Definitely a good go-to spot if you aren't sure.

Whenever we travel we try to find a restaurant with the name 'Fred's' - Just because our son is called Fred! We all loved our meals and the service was great... My husband is still talking about the spicy chicken even three month down the line. We can't wait to come back!

We planned a trip to New York to see the Macy’s Parade and visit our daughter over Thanksgiving weekend. Our daughter had emailed us several different menus for Thanksgiving. We chose Fred’s of New York on Amsterdam. Dinner reservations at 7:00 PM thanksgiving night. The menu was a 3 course meal, starter, main course with 2 sides and a dessert. We arrived at 6:50 and were seated in the main dining room at 7:00 PM. (Three seatings on Thanksgiving (1:30, 4:00 and 7:00) The decor was very interesting. Reading the Bio the restaurant was named for a dog named Fred. The staff was very friendly and attentive. They were made sure we had plenty of water and coffee without ever disturbing our conversation. We asked for recommendations for drinks and our attendant helped out. I had a Caesar salad, roasted turkey with gravy, garlic mashed potatoes and dressing. Dessert I had pecan pie with whipped cream. The portions were very generous. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was friendly and comfortable. I would definitely add Fred’s to my places for dinner when traveling to New York.

The outdoor eating areas are a good place for people watching, along with the cars, trucks and buses, but they are easy to ignore because of the food and the service. Inside is a comfortable hangout with a relaxing ambiance. There is a wide selection of foods, from here, there and everywhere, at reasonable prices. Pulled pork, lamb burgers, pasta, meatloaf are just a few of the dishes available. Always friendly service and no rush to get you out.

Very welcoming ....we went after wandering around looking for somewhere to eat and we were pleasantly surprised ...reasonably priced and nice staff in fact after food we ended up drinking at the bar until 1 in the morning! Still our bill was pretty good...got loads of advice off the helpful bar tender as to where to go in nyc and to be fair so far he was right...thank you

Very good atmosphere, nice place - both outdoor and indoor seating are fine. The food was tasty and well cooked (we had lamb and steak) and the service very friendly and helpful. My best recommendation.

We picked Freds b/c we were looking for a place that wasn't too frufru in food but still good and fun. It did not disappoint. We had meatloaf, burger and pulled pork and everyone enjoyed what they ordered. The hostess was great when I made the reservation and we were seated at our reservation time. The service was good and the manager/owner? Came by to check on us;) Good choice to start our girl's weekend!

This was near our hotel, so we walked the neighborhood to find this place. Fun place and if you are a dog lover you're going to love the decor. Food was good too. Would eat here again.

Went out with friends, the owner saw us looking at the menu posted outside the restaurant, and came out to greet us. We had the best time, the food, the ambience, the pictures of dogs, the waiter, the DRINKS, OMG, I had the best Pear Pomegranate Martini. I and my colleagues will be back, rest assure.

Lovely outdoor seating and food! There were five adults and one toddler. We ate at a lovely table that could accommodate us outside as the weather was just beautiful for brunch. They were very accommodating for the toddler., putting in his order right away. The pancakes were light and delicious. One of us had a hamburger which was cooked perfectly, served with crispy fries, two of us had Eggs Benedict, and two of us had an omelette with 3 choices of fillings. No one was disappointed and the service was impeccable! We’d come back!

Charming restaurant, great atmosphere, fun crowd. Wonderful wait staff -- friendly and helpful. I had a tuna dish that was wonderful -- creatively combined with ginger, whipped potatoes, spinach. My wife had a salad nicoise that was OK. Some of the tuna was overcooked. Overall -- good experience, not fabulous.

I did like what I ate at this place but it would be nice if they would offer more napkins. I was seated quite quickly

They have everything for everyone. The portions are big and the quality is good. Cozy atmosphere and the staff is very friendly. Not expensive either, it’s reasonable.

I went for brunch in a sunny saturday. The restaurant was full and since I was alone I went for the bar. I chose the poached eggs and they were not bad, they were just not as good as I would expect. I would also loved to have a bagel or some bread with the poached eggs in the place of potatoes, it is so much better to eat running eggs with bread. It was an ok experience.

Had a great time here! My bartender Joseph was fantastic and the regulars here made me feel completely at home. If I lived in the area.... this would be my favourite local hang out!! Love all the dog pics to boot!,

We had a lunch there with our 2yo girl. Reasonable price and good service. Children friendly place. The burger is pretty good. Kid pasta plate was kinda simple.

Fred's is a fun place to go for brunch on a Sunday morning. It has good food ,a very fair brunch deal and there are pictures of dogs covering the walls which just makes it a fun place.

Visited with my husband after having some drinks in the area. Looks lovely with twinkly lights and outdoor seating (but it was a bit cold for that!). Sat inside and ordered drinks, wasn't very busy. Service was so so. Really enjoyed the back story of the restaurant and the pics of all the dogs on the wall!!!!! I had mac and cheese, you can customise and add what you like to it. I added bacon and mushrooms. The food came - we shared buffalo chicken fingers to start - they were amazing. My husband did not enjoy his fishcakes for main, very mediocre. My mac and cheese was to die for, so delicious however they didn't add bacon, just the mushroom. When I let the server know he didn't apologise or anything, just said well he wouldn't be able to tell unless he tasted it himself which I thought was an odd comment to make. I mean I obviously wasn't lying to get £1 deducted from the bill... was just letting them know. Also feel like once our food was cleared we were just forgotten about. The mac really was fantastic tho!!!

Again, we found ourselves hungry in NYC, but not for long. After attending a very high energy and thought provoking jazz worship service at Redeemer Presbyterian just around the corner, we stumbled into Fred's and were surrounded by thousands of dog pictures! I started with the spicy buffalo wings which were cooked perfectly, and then headed right into the large plate of grilled lamb chops. Again, well cooked and tasty. My teenage kids also dug right into a steak and a large chicken fajita, that surprisingly came with only one plate sized tortilla. We skipped dessert since we were so full.

Fred's is a neighborhood restaurant with great fare with a friendly atmosphere. As three adults we each approached with different dining preferences and were all more than HAPPY! Not an easy feat My husband had the grilled burger with SP fries while my I had the Niçoise Salad and a side of macaroni and cheese. Our daughter had the Veggie Burger and a salad. We all were happy with our meal and the price was right! Nothing better than a neighborhood restaurant which you can consider your backup kitchen.

Our favourite spot on UW side. Great food , awesome friendly staff , and nice relaxing setting. Nice place to sit streetside. Love this place!

In famished desperation, ignoring past mediocre meals, we returned to Fred's this evening, since our preferred neighborhood spots were full; the empty tables street side should have served fair warning. Alas. The menu looks no different from most other mid-priced eateries on Amsterdam so, befitting the breeze and rising moon, we opted for a brew and the Wednesday Night 3-Taco Special. After a good wait, a shockingly naked platter appeared with three minuscule "tacos" –– specifically, a sprinkling of overly-peppered chicken and overcooked pork on 4" corn tortillas, accompanied by a teensy cup of cilantro salsa with, at most, a half teaspoon of diced avocado...& nary a garnish in sight. When we inquired of our waiter, (who'd twice introduced himself, but then conveniently disappeared), he said these tacos were "street tacos." Really? Get a better line, Fred! In the meantime, we were the dolts who coulda shoulda woulda gone somewhere else if we'd but given a tad more thought to the matter.

We got a table rather quickly. Without reservation. The ambiance was very nice. I'm a dog lover, so the pictures of dogs in the wall were very cute. It seemed a busy night but we got our drinks and food rather quickly. The food was very nice. My dad got a Fred's burger, wich was nice. I got a veggie burger, wich was super nice. The fries were home made and very tasty. It was not super greasy. The salad was fresh and a nice complemantary aspect. The people working there were very kind and nice. Super lovely and felt welcomed. I would come again, was sad that we discovered this place on our last night. The price was very ok (fresh food versus prices in new york). Would recommend this place a thousand times! Go there and try everything!

My husband and I go to Fred's once a month. The food is dependably good, and the service is (usually) excellent. One of the bartenders has an attitude and tends to be unfriendly but the rest are very friendly. And the wait staff is by and large competent and friendly.

Normally I would have scored 4 stars, as the food was great and the place has a nice atmosphere. However, at a certain moment a huge cockroach was passing by on the wall and under our table. The waiter killed it, but it this is not what I like to see in a restaurant. I hope this was an incident, but can not score other than 1 star.

Super cozy bar, just down the street from where we were staying. Bartenders were extremely nice & quick to get drinks. Would definitely visit when back to the UWS!

Family of four had one course and a glass of water each. The bill came to nearly $100 including a tip. Two of the meals were poor with over cooked pasta and woody breast chicken. The other two were mediocre at best. Overall, a very disappointing experience.

We went for Sunday brunch and there is a great selection of entrees for an all exclusive price which includes a mimosa, bloody Mary's and coffee. They have great muffins that they keep bringing to the table. Get there early on a beautiful spring day to sit outside.

The food was tasty, four of us had dinner here. The portion sizes were good and the food was enjoyable to eat. A nice range of snacks available.

We heard about Fred's from a friend, a quirky bar & restaurant with pictures of dogs all over the walls- (named Fred after David the owners dog) we took a framed picture of our dogs and it is now on the wall with the others. We felt like we were among friends, the food is just fantastic, home cooking at it's best, huge portions and a great twist on things- mac cheese with chipotle and broccoli- just delicious. Desserts were also huge and homemade, the atmosphere is cosy and relaxed and the staff were friendly and helpful. If ever we are lucky enough to visit NYC again we will most definitely go back to buy David a beer for making our evening so memorable.

We caught up with friends for dinner after a Yankees game yesterday. Our group of 7 was accommodated quickly without a booking. The service was fast and friendly and food was tasty. I had the beet salad with goats cheese very yummy.

This is one of the coziest, pleasant and comfortable places to eat. The owner, David, and his staff are extremely warm and friendly and will do most anything to accomodate. With a diversified menu containing a lot of down home food as well - Mac n' Cheese, hamburgers, Veggie burger and orecchiette w/sausage are my favorites. Tonight I had the most extraordinary dessert --which I highly recommend - hot brownie with gelato and whipped cream, laced with chocolate sauce. I know that's not the most unique or original dessert but it was the best one I've had in a long time. The bar in the front room is always filled and seems like a lot of fun. go there.

On Amsterdam? Can't decide on a place? Want regular food for regular people with regular servers? It's Fred's for you. Good food. Big outdoor seating area. Generous portions. Great people watching. Friendly service, usually too many dogs but heck, it's all part of the show. We had beer and burgers and they were yummy.

When you walk in the door it almost feels like you should be on the set of "Cheers." Get seated around the corner and it's a comfortable and inviting (and family friendly) dining area. The chicken parmesan portion was enormous and delicious. Great burgers and house specialty mac and cheese. If you are on the upper west side it's worth a look

We chose this place primarily because it shares its name with our eldest son. Thankfully it lived up to its name as it was truly fabulous. Great atmosphere, great staff, great menu and astonishing value for money. The brunch market in NYC is fierce but if there is a better value for money brunch experience in the city than this then it must be one hell of a place. If you have chance just go here, you will not regret it. Enjoy!

This was my second trip to Fred's while visiting NYC and they didn't disappoint. The nachos were amazing and the pear salad is delicious. Awesome service as well.

We came to NYC to celebrate our son's 5th birthday. We walked by Fred's when leaving the children's museum. Everyone looked like they were having a great time and the food coming out looked delicious. We decided to stay and we're so happy we did. The food, service and prices were unbeatable and we had some time to chat with one of the owners who gave us the story of Fred's and even brought our done a birthday treat! We live in Florida and try to get up to NYC when we can. This is definetly a place to come back to and a place to check out if your on the upper west side.

We wound up at Fred’s quite by chance while wandering around aimlessly. Very busy on a late Saturday morning. Wait staff were unpretentious and friendly, service quick and we enjoyed a good brunch. Spicy Bloody Mary’s! Lots of families and strollers. Seemed like a nice neighborhood diner.

We stumbled across Fred's while taking a walk up Amsterdam Ave one evening looking for somewhere good to eat and were not disappointed. As first timers in NY from Scotland, we were made to feel exceptionally welcome from start to finish. There are no airs and graces here, just real people of all ages enjoying great food in a lovely, traditional atmosphere with attentive service. Think oldschool pointed stone walls with candles on every table and tastefully hung pictures of dogs everywhere (+ cats in ladies toilet apparently). The owner is not shy about getting stuck in, welcoming guests and chatting. Kids are very welcome. The staff are well trained, coordinated & attentive, and also genuinely interesting to talk to (one chap (budding actor) told us how he's generally cast as someone who dies a lot in TV shows and had us in stitches with examples). The food was great. Exactly what you're looking for after lots of walking and long days doing the tourist thing. Big portions and to a very high standard. Wide selection of local and craft-style beers on draft. We chose to go back again for our last night 'special' meal in the City, and loved it yet again. This is all a restaurant needs to be. No gimmicks, just a hard-working owner and great staff with lovely food making an evening better than you'd hoped. Don't change a thing. Scott

A nice place with a nice bar, a large central restaurant and even a small private back-room. There is also outdoor seating in summer. The service is attentive and friendly. The food is good but kind of "run of the mill". You will not find new, innovative cuisine here! But at the decent prices it is ok to have standard fare once in a while.

夜9時過ぎに行ってパスタを食べた。娘はレギュラーバーガー。 バーは騒がしく盛り上がっていたが、 テーブルでは落ち着いて美味しく食べられました。 We enjoyed just a typical American casual dinner.

After a long day I was searching for a good place to sit, relax and have a nice meal. Stumbling upon Fred's, I was extremely happy with the find. I had 3 chicken tacos for taco night. The service was fabulous, always kept my water full, very attentive but not overbearing at all, the food was delicious, and it was a quaint comfortable place to eat. Will definitely return.

Lots of outdoor seating when the weather is nice. Dog friendly. Good burgers. Brunch is pretty good too.

I've been here 3 times in the last couple of months. The food has been consistently very good as has the service. Very full menu and for NYC reasonably priced. Seems to be very popular as the bar is packed most nights.

The atmosphere is pub-like. Prices are middle range, about $15 for a hamburger, and most salads are in the high teens. There are 5 or 6 beers on tap at $7 or $8 a pint. I had fajitas, my spouse had a salad nicoise. Both dishes were very mediocre. The fahitas were served without sour cream and with one large tortilla. Not typical.. The tuna on the nicoise was probably frozen. Our check with tip was close to $60.00, Expensive for what we ordered.

We met friends here for dinner at their recommendation. The tables provided enough room to eat and talk. The filet of sole was flavorless however the autumn salad was good and could have done as a light meal. The chicken parmigiana was unremarkable. Service was good.

My girlfriend, her son, and my German Shepherd were in Manhattan on a recent Sunday and chose Fred's (not knowing the restaurant was named after a famous service dog) because it was very close to Central Park (2 blocks or so), had quite few people waiting (usually a good sign), quick review of the tripadvisor app indicated very good (4.5) reviews, and it has outdoor as well as indoor seating--the outdoor seating being most important given my German Shepherd was with us. We did have to wait for our outdoor table, but the staff were great about it--offering my GS water while we waited and keeping me informed of the status of our wait. The service was very good. We felt very welcome. The food was very good with large portions and very reasonable prices. Brunch menu on Sunday afternoon. Would certainly recommend and will return.

We were looking for something not too expensive around the natural history museum. We saw a few options, but this was the only one without a line and it seemed better anyway. Three fourths of our meal were good. We cannot recommend the quiche as it seemed to have been reheated, but the omelets and locks were excellent. I would highly recommend their "upper west side breakfast." It was not extremely pricey and exactly at the price range we were looking for. The service was extremely fast and very pleasant. The sangria was in too big a quantity but still as expected. Overall, a very good experience.

Big shout out to Fred's restaurant on the Upper West Side who is doing lunch/dinner pick-up and delivery. Besides great comfort food, they having great lamb chops my fav- they are here now when disaster hits. Thanks for being there for NYC during this crisis.

My boyfriend and I went to this restaurant because we were at the Museum of Natural History and wanted to eat somewhere nearby that was a part of the City Shuffle Diner's Deck. Unfortunately, we went at around 4pm, which was when they were serving their very limited "Twilight" menu, which only includes a handful of appetizers, a couple burgers, sandwiches, mac n cheese, and salads. I wouldn't recommend going during this time. Wait until they have the full menu available. I had the pulled pork sandwich and it wasn't very good. I would never order it again, or recommend it. My boyfriend ordered the chicken sandwich, was just a very regular chicken sandwich. Our drinks, a long island and a dark and stormy, were good and pretty strong. The atmosphere is okay -- the walls are decked in individually framed photos of dogs and the lighting is pretty dim and pub-like. We walked in through the pub door and no one greeted us, so we had to walk through a small hallway into a separate dining area where all of the wait staff was standing around a drink station. Our waitress didn't come to the table for quite a while, and took forever to come back to give us the check, but she was friendly and nice.

As the title implies this was my 3rd attempt at Fred's. Why keep trying??? Good location. I like the dining room but the food????? Not so much. The pasta with arrabiata sauce was tasteless. I had a cobb salad. How do you screw up a cobb salad??? Tasteless blue cheese dressing. You might ask why i didnt let the server know the meals were sub-par, well, she didn't come back to the tableuntil all the dishes were cleared so it was pointless at that point. Net, net, skip Fred's!

Perfect little spot after the history museum. Good drinks and delish pub fare. Kid and dog friendly! Loved it and would definitely return.

Perfect place for a genuine NY experience: extremely friendly and pleasant people, great service, good food. We just walked in one evening and really felt like we belong there, and that is something you can't put a price on, can you now?

We went for late lunch after visiting the natural science museum. They have diverse menu and our food was very tasty and not overly priced. Plus lots of cute dog pictures on the walls.

Our first night in the Big Apple and Fred’s was a very welcome introduction to NYC and just round the corner from our hotel. Great atmosphere with lots of character. My burger was great and so was my wife’s pulled pork. Great local beer and very warm welcome. Only slight downside way too much salt on the fries!!

We got to Fred's a little before ten having been delayed in our travels to NY, i.e., just before closing. The waiter couldn't have been nicer. He got us menus, made some recommendations and got our order in to the kitchen after finding us seating in the bar area. I ordered an appetizer of guacamole and chips. Guacamole was fresh, chips crispy and had an interesting composition. I ordered a lamb burger, my wife a beef burger. Both burgers were cooked exactly as we asked. The fries were excellent and not too salty. I had a bottle of Porter ale, my wife a glass of pinot noir. Both were to our liking. I'd go back to Fred's again, hopefully getting there a littler earlier next so we could sample the desserts.
Love it!
This restaurant is such a fun place especially if you love dogs. We eat here every time we are in New York. We have never had to wait long for a seat even when it is very crowded. It appeals to a variety of tastes, including vegetarians. Great macaroni and cheese and fried mozzarella appetizer!
