Great Place In A Fun Neighborhood

By Haystacks-Brand |

I love Giano, always a fun time with good food, outdoor dining, friendly atmosphere! It is a nice walk from Midtown and take a cab back after sharing a bottle of wine.

Delicious pasta and cheeses!

By Domfas |

I had dinner here with friends and it was delicious! We had caprese salad and burrata... both of which were very fresh and very delicious. I had a creamy mushroom and bacon pasta dish which was so so rich and delicious. My husband had the bolognese and that was delicious as well. We also had the tiramisu which was yummy. I loved the vibe of the restaurant, it was cozy and quiet enough to chat with friends, which was nice. Great experience.

AUTHENTIC ITALIAN FOOD!

By PAffenita |

I am 2nd generation American, and my grand parents from both sides immigrated from Italy during the 20th Century. My mother's grandparents had a brick oven pizzeria on Thompson St., Greenwich Village, and I have been all over Italy many times - still see family there. The food in Giano is truly authentic Italian food and even better than some places I visited in Italy. This is NOT an American Italian or some spin of it. The amatriciana sauce is the best. The bigoli with the lamb ragu is phenomenal, and the spaghetti al pomodoro fresco is excellent. However, please do NOT order the lasagna. It is never good to order that in a restaurant. The tiramisu is truly authentic.

Great Service, Home-Made Pasta, Good Wines

By Timosabe |

The owners/managers/workers, whatever their involvement, are gracious, fun, a little crazy, knowledgeable, energetic and ensure a good meal. I have yet to be disappointed with their food after 4 visits. I like to sit at the bar to eat and interact with the somewhat zany servers. Always had good wines--the kind you take pictures of the label cause you want to remember it. And like a lot of the East Village, you won't break the bank eating here. Plus, they have a garden outback to dine under the sky in good weather. Highly recommend.

Enjoyed every bite

The food was delicious from the first dish till the desert!! The service was out of the ordinary!! The restaurant design is lovely!

Fabulous italian in the east village ! Amazing burrata !

By JetSetJessa |

Ate here with my 2 toddlers and had a great time ! Food is delicious and they made sure all the food was altered to the kids liking ! The burrata was absolutely fabulous and the tiramisu is the best around ! Will be back !

Really Good Italian

By georgeoliverwong |

I went to Giano with a few friends and had a great time - the waiter was really friendly, and the bigoli with lamb that I had was fresh and flavourful. Portions seem small at first, but at the end you realise that it was the perfect amount.

Amazing Italian food, great prices ESPECIALLY in Manhattan, and delicious wine suggestions!

By TravelBugBite28 |

This place is great. It's on the smaller side, but it's usually not so busy that you can't get a seat. It's a well-kept secret in Manhattan! They serve delicious Italian cuisine and are also a full wine bar. The portions aren't so big that you leave feeling too stuffed, but they're not gourmet small where you'll leave feeling hungry. Everything I've tasted there was delicious. The wait staff and owner are great. They're warm and friendly when making a reservation or providing great service, and they'll also make perfect wine suggestions based on what you like and what you're eating. Try the tiramisu! Try anything, really. You won't be disappointed!

Nice bar and restaurant

By Chris F |

We waited at Giano's bar while waiting for our table at Pylos next door. Although we only had drinks, the staff was very friendly and we noted the packed tables and abundant Italian entrees. We will be back to sample the food as well as the excellent drinks.

Best male I had in NYC

By AWTYblogger |

We came here for dinner as we were staying just up the road & weren't disappointed. We had the lamb shanks & the filet mignon & they were absolutely delicious! Good quality restaurant food with good flavours all washed down with a nice bottle of wine & good service. Loved it, wish I lived closer!

Great little place

By crista16 |

Located just around the corner from the apartment we are staying in, in the East Village. The food was great, we had the calamari it came with the tentacles also which we loved, the tuna balls were lovely and we really enjoyed the pasta special which was ravioli with ricotta, Parmesan and prociutto. The whole meal was delicious. Do dinner. If your in the East Village, you won't be disappointed.

Excellent food with a great atmosphere. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. Most dishes were made fresh to order, including desserts. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who enjoys exquisite Italian food.

Nice experience in the East Village

By Rick F |

Enjoyed a nice night at Giano in the East Village in October 2018 the wait staff was very helpful the pricing is very fair with a nice beer and wine collection. Food was very good. The restaurant is located in a very dynamic section of New York City, the Lower East side.

We tried this restaurant for the first time and we will return. We each had a pasta dish. Each one was perfect - the pasta and sauces on each. Service was great We will return.

BEST ITALIAN SINCE I LIVED IN ITALY

By Allie S |

I lived in Southern Italy for a year, so I tend to be underwhelmed at most Italian restaurants in the States. That was not the case here! Wow, beginning to end this was a fabulous experience. We had been wandering the city all day and found ourselves starving for an early dinner. We popped into Giano's right after they opened. Paulo greeted us and sat us in their adorable garden. We ordered: Insalata de Rucola e Parmigiana - a HUGE mound of arugula, shaved parmesan with a balsamic reduction. Delicious! Rigatoni all'Amatriciana - I had this dish in Positano, Italy, and it blew me away, one of the best meals I had in Italy. I haven't been able to find a preparation that even comes close, until last night! AH-MA-ZING Spaghetti alla Gricia con Tartufo - homemade spaghetti with white wine sauce, pancetta, parmesan cheese, and truffle oil. SUPERB! Me and a girlfriend split these three dishes and left perfectly full spending around $25/each. Paulo was attentive, charming, and helpful. We loved everything. What a wonderful experience. I highly recommend checking this place out.

Fantastic Place

By China32 |

The food was delicious and the staff was very friendly and helpful. The idea of the restaurant is combining the old tradtional Italian cuisine with the temporary. Hence the sleek modern front of the house and the traditional warm and inviting dinning room area in the back. The place was overall fantastic. Its a hidden gem in NYC.

Authentic Italian with Cute Atmosphere

By Fiona GVP |

I love this place because the food is always delicious (they'll also tailor dishes to accommodate vegetarian diets) and the staff is very friendly. Their pasta dishes are some of my favorites in the city. Try the gnocchi ai 4 formaggi (4 cheese gnocchi), the ravioli di spianci e ricotta, or the spaghetti alla gricia con tartufo (they'll make this one without meat). In the Spring/Summer they also have the garden open which is so cute and illuminated by string lights. Definitely great for a casual date night or dinner with friends/family.

Delicioso

By Jordan S |

Great restaurant. Really warm people, nice and funny. The food is great (pollo a la Milanese, pasta) The dessert are also delicious cheesecake and chocolate lava cake with raspberry sauce. The wine is also good. The prices are not the cheapest but you pay for quality so it's fair enough.

Good Food and Great Tiramisu

By luv2trvl09NY |

My husband and I met up with friends at Giano's for dinner and found it to be a good option in the East Village when craving Italian food. Since it was a cool evening, we chose to sit in the back patio where the atmosphere was intimate with the tables amply spaced apart. Our server, most likely the owner, was very thorough in the description of the specials of the day and answered any questions we had regarding the menu. He also checked on us constantly. For appetizers, four of us shared the prosciutto & burrata special which tasted so fresh and we also had the fried calamari which was nice and crispy. For entrees, we ordered: Skirt steak. It was served as a braciole, was tender and absolutely delicious. Spaghetti with pancetta and truffle oil - It was so delicious but the portion was so small (about 5-6 forkfuls) I could have had another serving. Spaghetti with braised lamb ragout - Also a small portion and yet my friend didn't finish it because she said it was too heavy and dry. Salmon with peas and fava beans - Nice combination and fish tasted fresh. For dessert, we all ordered the tiramisu. It was decadent and a great finale to our meal. Overall, we enjoyed our dinner and may consider it again should we be in the area.

Nice italian place with friendly service and quality food

By Spanien_Urlauber_13 |

We went here to redeem our groupon. The place is quiet cozy and in a nice area of Manhattan with lots of bars around. The service at Giano's was nice, attentive and friendly. The food and the red wine included in the groupon were VERY good in quality, I was dying for the medieval thick spaghetti with lamb ragout, walnuts and parmegiano! Go to Giano's, you'll love it!

Lower East Side gem!

By Joe M |

Wow...this is the 3rd time we've eaten at Giano and it never disappoints. Restaurant is perfect dimension - not too big where you feel lost going to the bathroom but not too small where you feel like you're eating in a closet. They also have an outdoor garden space which is great when the What is there to say about the food?? It is always fresh and amazing. We all had the rigatoni all'amatriciana which was solid and we shared a plate of the bigoli with lamb ragu' and walnuts...this was mind blowing. The wine was equally strong and reasonably priced, in my opinion. Owners are there all the time and very friendly...can't wait to go back!

Great food!

By Dale D |

So many places in NYC to eat! We found this little gem and it was outstanding! The service was good, food and portions reasonable, and the price was great! Try the asparagus appetizer and the gnocchi!

Pleasant surprise!

By neesee66 |

We read the other reviews and wanted to give a try to something new...we dont get over to the east village much, usually stick to the west side, since it's closer to home in NJ....this was a very cozy place, decorated a bit modern, with nice brick walls & comfy seating w/pillows along the wall...the owner (?) was very pleasant with us, sat us near the open window, and on a beautiful night allowed us to people watch...we had a terrific assortment of fried appy's...ravioli, green olive stuffed w/meat, eggplant w/basil & cheese, and calamari...it was all very good! we had a cucumber, olive & goat cheese salad w/a light citrus dressing that was wonderful.... we had a bottle of Montepulciano that was quite good for $34- unheard of in nyc....dinner was delicious...the gnocchi was homemade, and light as a feather, the filet was prepared perfect w/basil mashed that was offsetting the meal really well...another dish of fresh pasta, mushroom, pancetta & bechemel was very good...all the pasta is homemade...the atmosphere was very relaxing, the service was attentive, and overall it was a very good experience....

Great food and ambience

By DB L |

Very nice candlelight dinner. Service was superb and the food was great. Ordered tiramisu for dessert, supposed to be top 5 in North America according to the menu. It did not disappoint.

OMG delicious

By Tish1219 |

My friends and I visited this great restaurant after baking cupcakes across the street. It was a great find. All the pastas were fresh and delicious! We got extra plates and everyone tasted everyones dinner, one was better than the next! We were so stuffed after dinner we could not eat dessert, but our host knew we were celebrating two birthdays and he brought us out two delicious pieces of tiramisu so that we could sing. It was wonderful!

Lovely Restaurant, Charming Staff

By mjsheridan130 |

We went on Valentine's - with a prix fix menu - and loved the experience. The staff were very welcoming and joked around a bit in Italian, which was a charming touch. The food was incredible! As someone who spent some time living in Italy, the food tasted very authentic. Would definitely recommend overall!

Quite possibly, the best Italian joint ever.

By jp0069 |

Rocked up without a reservation but they got us in. Don't rely on that though. I'd book Really lovely fun staff and a simple menu using fresh produce. If the prosciutto wrapped asparagus is on the specials just order it. We ordered two it was that good. Mains we had the four cheese gnocchi and the tagliatelle bolognaise were divine. We finished with the tiramisu (huge) and the lava cake. The manager even gave us a complimentary dessert wine. This is serious but fun food served in a buzzy environment and if we get the chance before we leave we will back. One of the nicest Italian restaurants we have ever been. So so so recommend this place!!!

Dinner in the east village NYC

By Richard D |

Had dinner at a great italian restaurant in the east village in NYC, nice ambiance, reasonable price for NYC, owners and staff very friendly and service is very good, food is excellent, Bolognese is one of the best I ever had and my wife had the raviolis and is still talking about how good they were, the buffalo mozzarella and cured meats appetizer is special, wine is very good, would definitely recommend this restaurant

Our favorite neighborhood Italian Restaurant

By Stuart C |

Owners are warm, food is good, neighborhood filled with fun shops - get dessert at Davey’s ice cream around the corner of 1st Ave. Unpretentious good quality food in a warm setting is never wrong.

Buon Gusto

By msnanalou |

In summer you can eat in the back garden, other times inside is small and crowded with good ambience. Either way the food and service are superb. Close your eyes and your in Italy.

Rushed out before we were done

By Annie |

nice restaurant, but we were bum-rushed out while we still had wine and coffee on table -- and after leaving a good tip. waiter interrupted us to as "how much longer" we were going to be b/c one person was waiting at bar. really odd experience. won't go back and would not recommend. I had travelled to NYC to see a friend I hadn't seen in a year due to COVID, so this was a bummer we were rushed out like this.

Delicious Food and Nice Atmosphere

By Casi C |

Loved the open-air dining room and the back patio. Wish they had a little music playing out back for some ambiance, but that would be my only complaint! We were one of only a handful of tables when we visited the other night, so we got great attention and the food and service was prompt. The mushroom risotto was very tasty, as was the four cheese gnocci. Portions were large, even for the price, and unfortunately we wasted a good bit of food because we were so full by the end of the meal. We did, however, manage to clean the plate the cheesecake was served on - it was delicious! Would definitely recommend sharing salads between two people unless you plan to have one as your meal. Nice little neighborhood restaurant, we will be back!

The Best Italian Restaurant outside of Italy. The best in New York.

By Gerald T |

Boy! Was I impressed ! Not even the slight rain falling over the leaves in the back garden where we sat, bothered me. First of all, it's a fun experience. The maitre (and, I suppose, owner) comes out very casually and speaks in Italian to you. Him and his hair tied back, me and my long hair on the loose. And then the food. Wow! I had a pasta with wild mushrooms in a wine-cream sauce and my partner had a salad and a grilled salmon. It's not your usual Italian. These people are creative , the food and the wine list are perfect and the atmosphere could not be better. ENJOY (and let the maitre recommend you his specials) LOVE Gerald

Very Nice Meal

By RyRyMB |

I had never been to NYC and used some airline miles/redemption points for free meals and this was one restaurant I picked. It was a great choice. They let us in 10 minutes early before opening since it was quite cold outside and the host/waiter/bartender/quasi-manager was very nice and fun to talk to. I'd recommend calling and making a reservation because it filled up quickly, as well as ask them about the name of the restaurant and what its logo means, it's very detailed and interesting. The food and wine was very tasty and the bill wasn't too bad considering. As stated I used redemption points for free meals and the only reason I didn't give this restaurant five stars is because other places would let me use all me free meal certificates at once, this place would not, so instead of getting $60 off we only received $15, even though I had four certificates. I won't be heading back to NYC anytime soon so I'l either keep these for if I ever do visit again or pass them off to some friends that live in the city so they can go instead.

Delicious food, lovely atmosphere

By margo e |

Lovely menu, plenty of options to suit every taste. Specials fabulously explained. A lovely atmosphere, very relaxed. Wine was very nice - would definitely return

Wonderful Italian Dining

By diant53 |

Delicious and enjoyable place in East Village. Wanted a quick meal here before a show, and ended up wishing we had had much more time. Staff were very helpful and attentive, but not too much. Ambience was very nice, informal, comfortable. Menu has great choices of appetizers, salads, pasta and a couple of mains (desserts too, but we skipped that). My one glass of wine (a cab suav) was good, too. We opted for an arugula salad -- simple, great dressing and cheese; a tagliatelle bolognese -- pasta was great, as was the sauce; and the chicken breast main -- the sauce, again, especially with the rabe, made this delicious. Prices were moderate, too.

Good food, comfortable chairs, but below average room.

By Magpie1969 |

This is the kind of small local restaurant you want to succeed. We asked what the waiter liked best and ordered it. The lamb shank was very flavorful and a good choice. My daughter enjoyed her lasagna. However, without this suggestion I don't know what I would have ordered next. The appetizers and the entrees were too few. I ordered olives as an appetizer. They were OK, but too strong. The staff was very Friendly, but the room was too dimly lit for me, though the two women in our group thought it was a flattering light. Tables in the front had more light. It was a fine meal, but nothing stood out. I wanted pmore Italian dishes. Perhaps I am just unfamiliar with what constitutes Sicilian cooking. We ordered 2 lamb shanks, a lasagna, a delicious $39 chianti, fried ravioli appetizer, two cappuccinos and a chocolate volcano dessert for $149 plus tip for 3 people.

Charming Italian Restaurant

By Christine S |

I have eaten here twice and thoroughly enjoyed it both times. The menu has many great selections and the specials are always exceptional! LOVE the Italian owner and the atmosphere. Nice laid back service in a quiet atmosphere where you can have conversation without yelling or straining to hear.

A good Italian restaurant in New York

By antonypb |

Dined at Giano's in New York on 17th July. I was walking in Little Italy with my girlfriend and I met an Italian guy who warned me about the "Italian" restaurants in that area and suggested 3 restaurants in town were to eat. By the way I'm Italian and can assure you that nothing in Little Italy is Italian! We chose Giano because it was the nearest. Friendly atmosphere, fantastic back garden, nice lively boosting area, good Italian food. The two owners are really nice to customers and created a friendly atmosphere. Food was served quickly and presented very well. Good wine list. I suggest to experience this restaurant as a unexpected jewel in the heart of a nice and sofisticated area.

Excellent!!!

By Francois D |

This is genuine real italian restaurant with amazing food and service!!! Bravo! We really enjoyed out supper!

Love this place!

By DMH1416 |

Honestly, our favorite restaurant in New York City and a must every time we are in town. Service is amazing. Food is absolutely outstanding. Each and every time we leave here, we leave so happy and planning our next visit back.

Better places are available

By Walter P |

Food was overpriced and of so-so quality; stingy portions. Service was a bit indifferent. Decor was all right, but nothing special.

Simply good Italian! Lots of homemade pasta!

By Liz M |

Super cute ambiance, with an intimate feel, exposed brick, and a back garden/patio area). Everything we ate here was excellent. They have a vast selection of dishes prepared with their housemade fresh pasta - you can not go wrong! They were especially accommodating and attentive with our 2 young children (while I would not say that they are a good go-to with kids spot, it was recommended as such, and they were lovely! But FYI they only have 1 high chair and no kids menu.. worked out fine with my kids thankfully!). The staff was patient, polite, had beautiful Italian accents, and a great knowledge and passion for the food they were serving! Some of the best tiramisu I've ever had!

Excellent and Affordable in NYC

By Arthur225NYC |

What an amazing find, the food is scrumptuous and the wait staff are very friendly and attentive. Been there several times and both times the meals were amazing.

Very good food. Service could improve.

By sharonfader |

Ate here with a group of 4. The ambiance was charming and creative. Waitor came on a bit too strong-telling us the wine we selected was not a good choice. Went to chill the bottle he recommended and seemed to forget us as we finally had to remind him we had not received it. Very pushy about dessert. Waitstaff generally not attentive. The plate size was average. Pros- Quality of food very high. Well priced. Cons-Service

Great food, charming service, and fantastic ambience

By theschuster |

Even though this was a Friday night, the family (party of 5) took a shot along 7th street in the East Village, to find a place for a family dinner. Giano's menu looked very interesting, and the ambience appeared good. Although no tables were available, the charming staff let us eat at the bar. We had great food and deserts, and the charming Deborah behibd the counter made sur we had a good time. Other guests were also contributing to the super positive experience. I will be sure to return next time I am in town.

Fantastic in Every Way

By Tony P |

Everything was wonderful here- the food, the service, the setting- all were perfect. We sat on the back patio, which was lovely on a warm summer night. Service was super friendly and attentive as well, but the food was the star. All the pastas are fresh made in house daily, and everything else is prepared fresh as well. You can tell. This is Italian done right. Probably the best Italian meal I have ever had!

nyc trip, dinner in the east village

By Richard D |

First time at this restaurant was in August 2016 while visiting the city, was excellent so since we were visiting nyc in September 2017 we decided to see if the second time would be as good, well it definitely was, ambiance, food, service were all excellent, will definitely eat here whenever we visit the city, highly recommend, reasonably priced, food made with freshest ingredients, wine and Italian beer very good and family owned, can't go wrong in our opinion

Pasta Perfection

By Katherine C |

We had the best time at Giano Restaurant last night! Our server was a delight, as was the entire waitstaff. They recommended lovely wine pairings for our entire meal. We had the asparagus special to start, which was so good and the perfect dish pre-pasta. For dinner, we obviously went with a couple pastas - the bolognese and the rigatoni. Both of them were amazing and we cleaned our plates. All in all, a fantastic meal - Would highly recommend!!

Fabulous find!!!

By worldtravelerwant2be |

On a weekend getaway to NYC from jersey, the hubs and I stumbled upon this gem in the village. The ambiance was nice the service was lacking but I believe they were short on wait staff. Great wine selection and the best homemade pasta we have ever had. Food was excellent!

Great new place with a very original take on italian dishes! Very authentic and incredible service.

By Tommy C |

Great new place with a very original take on italian dishes! Very authentic and incredible service.

Great service Great Pasta

By IMB95 |

We were a party of 8 and our waiter was engaging and very entertaining. The pasta dishes were terrific but the meat dishes were just ok which is why this was not rated "excellent" as it was great value for money with a good wine list. The desert choices were also outstanding.

Delicious authentic Italian with a beautiful atmosphere

By Charmaine G |

Omg this place is sooooo good! Roberto served us, and she was so lovely. We were a family of five visiting and I can say for sure it is my favorite Italian restaurant ever! The food was delicious, servings of pasta could be a bit bigger, good selection of wine and desserts were yummy!

Simply the BEST Italian in NYC

By Rachael L |

Everything here is Fantastic - from the food, the service, and ambiance. I found this gem a little over 4 years ago. All the pasta is handmade and simply delish! You can taste how fresh it is. I have searched for all Italian restaurants that offer homemade pasta, and after trying many other places... nothing comes close to Giano. I will continue to be their #1 costumer.

new restaurant, new friends

By diandira |

Was here last night with a friend, who brought some new friends. We live on the UWS of Manhattan so for us this is a little bit of a trek. Anyway the food, the service, the wine everything was great. My wife ordered salmon ands asked it to be cooked very rare. She said it was done perfectly. I had the lamb shank over mashed potatoes, also excellent. If you happen to be on the lower east side of Manhattan it's worth stopping in for meal.

Excellent!

By MaxR123 |

Very accomodating and warm restaurant! We were fitted in for dinner just before closing and the meals were prepared as if they had just opened with attention to detail and care! Worth the drive from midtown!

Excellent!

By TravelTimesNearAndFar |

We were looking for a place to dine in the East Village and after reading reviews for Giano we decided to give it a try. The fresh pasta is amazing, I had a lovely salad as well, and the desserts all sounded so good we tried the all, "Open Minded" was the table favorite, we will definitely add this our list of "must dine" when we come back to the city!

A very nice Italian restaurant find!

By ChasinNC |

We found this via researching on the Internet. Their website has some of the prettiest food pics I've even seen. The owner is incredibly personable and accommodating and knows his food and drinks inside and out. His pastas are all homemade, tender and delicious. His lamb shank (stinco in Italian) was a huge hit with our former chef-restaurant-owner-friend. Our other member had the gnocchi and proclaimed them the best she had ever eaten. The arugula salad was wonderful. Because of the hard-sided decor, it got a little noisy as it filled up, but it was tolerable. All in all, this is a must-return Italian restaurant!

Great Birthday Dinner

By Christina S |

Great food and service. Went for my son's bday while celebrating in NYC(from SC) Great Tartufo and gnocchi. Homemade pasta and tiramisu. The Barbara and bresaola was to die for. Great prices too

Great food, good atmosphere, good service

By RinaBlue13 |

The manager took good care of us throughout dinner, always checking on us. The food was great. We got some prosciutto with melon, risotto, and some beef pasta and they were all great even after we took home our leftovers and reheated the next day. Yum yum. Will definitely go back.

Wonderful dinner

By Anouk |

We had a wonderful dinner at Giano's. We are picky and spoiled, but we really want to recommend this restaurant to others. It is like you're in Italy. Try the gnocchi and take a dessert wine! It's a treat.

Rome Rival

By OrionNYC |

They understand that simple can still be exceptional. The pasta pomodoro was so good that I think it could face off against its counterpart in Rome. The pasta was homemade and perfectly cooked. The sauce was fresh and not overcooked. I was with three other people and each liked their meals equally well. Wine and service were good. It isn't like you can't find lots of Italian restaurants in New York. But this one was worth the cross town trip.

Excellent food, friendly service, and the background music is not overwhelming.

By Roberto P |

Excellent food, great and friendly service, good price, and the background music is not overwhelming. However, the restaurant is a little too dark. Many people use the candles on the table to be able to read the menu. Moreover, seeing the food, its colors, and texture is part of the pleasure of eating, while here colors become just shadows. Still a great place, though.

Neighborhood Italian gem

By MK330 |

Room is cozy; service friendly and attentive; excellent Italian food...even better tiramisu...also LOVED their lava cake (wish it could be a bigger slice....)

Best Pasta I have ever had

By fainall |

This is a superb little gem of a restaurant in the East Village. I had dinner there on Sunday evening and by Monday I was already thinking, "you know what sounds good? That pasta dish I had at Giano's". Where to start? The service is impeccable and the server (who may very well be the owner) was personable, KNOWLEDGEABLE and very entertaining. The food was superb. I had the parmigiana di milanzane for the appetizer. The spices were perfectly balanced with just the right amount of cheese. For my main, I had the spinach and ricotta ravioli with butter and sage...this is truly a dish on which dreams are made. I would have NEVER thought of pairing sage with a pasta dish, but the result is heavenly. Paolo suggested a Lambrusco that is served cold -- GENIUS. A slight sparkle with the cold red makes it one of the most refreshing as well as delicious reds I have ever enjoyed. And like so many others who has written about this restaurant, I think only a madman would leave Giano without having their tiramisu, which is very, VERY good. I wouldn't go so far as to say that it was the best I have ever had -- I would have liked a little more moisture on the bottom layer -- but definitely a wonderful complement to an insanely gorgeous dinner. For two people with a bottle of wine, two appetizers, two mains, dessert and espresso and TIP, it came to $140.00, making it one of the best values I had in New York. When I return to the city, I will definitely head back To Giano.

Good reasonably priced food , cozy setting

By sdgt625 |

Location - in buzzling east village Setting - casual, comfortable. Some tables very close to each other Service - good, friendly Food - mostly excellent. I had a starter with arugula , mozzarella cheese with slices of breseola beef - very tasty. For main I had the thick spaghetti with lamb ragu - loved the pasta , the sauce was a little too heavy for my taste . Overall a pleasant dining experience.

Delicious food in an attractive place at a reasonable cost

By Steve Hopkinson |

Absolutely fabulous food in every respect, from the asparagus appetizer to the chocolate souflee desert, and every dish in between, everything was delicious. We shared four dishes, the Amatriciana -- a spicy rigatone dish, to the mushroom and parmesean risotto special to the tagliatelle, a nice beef dish, all the pasta is homemade and just melts in your mouth. It's really that good. And the staff is nice, knowledgeable and as attentive as necessary. Wine list is nicely varied and includes some nice bottles that aren't too expensive. It's nicely decorated, with a delicate modern aesthetic and yet it has the feel of a home kitchen.

AMAZING mozzarella and homemade pastas!

By Kyra F |

The waiters here are what really makes it genuine Italian with their thick Italian accents and pure love for food. I always get the truffle spaghetti dish it is absolutely amazing. Really nice romantic atmosphere, good for date night and really reasonable prices.

very good meal

By NJmomof3kids |

nice evening out with friends. would have been nicer except the place was very hot. we were in the back so it was not too bad. we actually had a nice secluded table. We were not rushed. Meal very good. My 'sparkling mojito" was very good as well.

Great italian food

By dap220 |

Had a Saturday reservation and the place was hopping. Everything was fresh and came out hot. Not a huge selection but that's ok because everything was great. Reservations not required but definitely needed on the weekend.

Homemade pasta how can you go wrong?

By Vince C |

All the pasta is home made. The dishes are tasty and unique. Wait staff is friendly and efficient. Prices are reasonable and wine list is good.

Bad service and rude behavior

By sarahprsn |

Let me tell you this story. When the moment came to leave after paying the bill and writing our tips on the ticket, our waiter and seemingly the boss of the restaurant caught us to talk to us about the tip. He was explaining to us that usually the tip is the double of the tax fee. We were first thinking that nicely, because we're French, he was exposing the usual tipping habit but then he ASKED. He rudely asked us to change our tip. But let me tell you, maybe our tip wasn't the best but it was representative of the bad quality service. If we are free to decide the tip it's for a reason and honestly the service did not worth 20% of our bill (plates almost thrown on the table, did not take the order when we want, insisting on taking this and that). Not recommended !!

Great Dinner - Wonderful Host

By BuddhistNYC |

had a great dinner at this local hot spot on the lower east side. our host was authentic, from Milano, and provided wonderful service. the food was innovative, fresh, and very tasty. service, wonderful, and entertaining. and the atmosphere moved from relaxed early to bustling as the meal progressed.

Super tasty Italian

Just very tasty. The arugula salad was light and crisp with a yummy drizzle of vinegar. I had Bigoli al ragu which was rich and nuanced, thick tubes of pasta in a cream sauce with crush walnuts and lamb. It would be a tasty winter dish as well. My companion had the milanese which was very good for what it was, an italian schnitzel. I would stick to the pastas myself which all looked delicious as they were whisked by to other tables. We were so content desert was unnecessary. The wine list is short but to the point. This is some of the tastiest pasta I have had in NYC in a long time. ---and I used to live in Rome and Florence.

Our favorite Italian restaurant in NYC

Amazing homemade pasta. Great value, but very well done food. They have pasta dishes you won't see anywhere else. Try to get there on a Tuesday or Wednesday when the burrata is flown in fresh.

Great food and I had a remarkable Pinot Noir there! I like the concept too. Most concept places don't deliver on the food but this one does.

Paolo is the best

Paolo, the owner, is so passionate about the food, the way he describes it makes your mouth water. The food lives up to his descriptions - big time. Also make sure to finish off with the locally made tiramissu.

Best Italian Gem!

By brooklynmamma |

Giano is a cozy hidden gem tucked into restaurant row on 7th street. The owners make you feel at home and the food is simply amazing. I bring Italians yearning for food just as good as they left back home and over and over they say it's better than what they eat back in Milano or Rome. The pasta is all made on premises as is the gelato. A very impressive wine list offers great affordable options as well as pricier if you want to splurge. Everything is delicious, whether you like meatballs and lasagna or prefer to try something you've never had like the bigoli or Parmesan creme brûlée. Best Italian in NYC!

Incredible service, great food

I forgot to write a review when I went here almost two months ago. It was so good that I never forgot the restaurant, the service or the night. Incredible food and great service in a modern but modest setting.

Lovely Italian restaurant!

There were 5 of us for dinner. We had a reservation at 7:30 pm on a Friday. The place was packed. Medium sized restaurant, gave us a comfortable and relaxing feel. Most of the pasta dishes are homemade (avg.$15). The arugula salad is enough for 3 people to share ($9.95) and was delicious! The risotto special was really good ($14.95). The first red wine on the wine menu was wonderful. Nice smooth finish with NO Oaky taste. It complemented our meal beautifully and was enough to serve the 5 of us. Most of the bottles of red wine were $39. We finished our meal with one piece of Tiramisu, which was perfect since we were so full. Yum!

Awesome Dinner!

We heard this was a great little Italian restaurant to try so we went and now agree. Our server was Paolo, whose animated descriptions of the food seemed unbelievable until we ate it and believed every word. Just delicious! We went early so it was quiet and the service was excellent and attentive.
