Perfect New York Experience

By Amanda C |

The restaurant is understated and perfect for an evening out when you want to enjoy conversation as well as the food. Excellent service. Foie Gras was outstanding as was the steak and the cod. Apple tarte tartin ranks among the best we’ve had.

Fabulous dinner

By ellenwer |

The Gotham Bar and Grill is our "go to" restaurant for great food and service. We were there recently, celebrating a birthday and enjoyed every moment. We started with wine and then had 2 delicious appetizers. My husband chose the seared foie gras which was outstanding and I had the baby kale salad, also quite delicious. Next we savored the rack of lamb and we both agreed that it's the best rack of lamb that we've ever eaten. For dessert, the "birthday boy" chose chocolate mousse and we were also given the black forest cake to try in honor of my husband's birthday. Yum, they were great! As always, the service was efficient and we never wanted for anything. The Gotham Bar and Grill is a reliable and excellent choice for a wonderful dinner out. We're looking forward to our next visit soon!

It's the best

By Carrie B |

I have been here a few times and I was surprised I had not written a review yet! I love the ambiance of the restaurant. Classic, bright, clean, and relaxed. It was nice to be in a Michelin star restaurant without all the fluff. Staff is outstanding. Hands down one of the best dining experiences due to excellent food and excellent staff. I was here with a group and we ordered just about everything on the menu. It was all amazing. Period. We left very full and very buzzed. I have never been disappointed in this restaurant. Ever. You can't really say that often, particularly in NYC. I will return again and again!

Amazing

By Iain S |

Loved, loved, loved this place. The ambience is fantastic, every member of staff friendly, competent and knowledgeable. The food though....good Lord.....outstanding. In reverse chronology but order of satisfaction, the soufflé was a thing of beauty and a joy to eat. Fish and steak were cooked perfectly and the tuna tartare just fresh and delicious. Wine least was good. Had run out of my first choice but sommelier offered a comparable replacement which was lovely. All in all, just fantastic.

Celebrating our 24th wedding anniversary

By Emmanuel L |

What an evening we had! The food was simply out of this world and the service just finished off a perfect picture. Let’s not beat about the bush here, at over $100 per person, the meal was expansive. But when you find out it is one Michelin star restaurant, then you know they have invested in a good chef. Every bite is a step in heaven. But then, this alone is not enough. They have so many staff who are so attentive to your every need that they don’t give you enough time to think “oh I am a little bit thirsty, let me pour some more wine”. Before you even realise your mouth is dried, they are already on top of it and your glass gets replenished. So in a nutshell delicious food and superb service. Comes highly recommended.

Lovely food

By Juwit57 |

Came for dinner. Food sublime. Waiters with attitude though. Asked one to order a cab for us and was told to get one outside ourselves, gave a cash tip to a lady waiter who did not even say thank you!

Yearly visit, first time to disappoint

By Barb B |

We visit NYC yearly and Gotham is always on the itinerary. Unfortunately this year the server was less than attentive, and service suffered. The server neglected to charge us for food, instead only the bar tab. After pointing out his $200 error, no thank you , no acknowledgment,

Lunch is so worth it!

By Zenobia A |

I absolutely LOVED this place. From the service to dessert, everything was spot on. Their lunch special is so worth it if you have the time. You get, not just an app, entree, and dessert but your first two courses can literally be anything on the menu as long as your 3rd course is dessert. I ordered the risotto and it's everything I ever wanted. Super creamy and flavorful. The portion is enough if you're doing 3 courses but on its own, it's not filling. Our server was kind enough to even give dessert to people in our party that didn't order the special and that really went above and beyond my expectations. He was super friendly and my glass was never empty. I would definitely eat here again when in the city.

Excellent food served at the bar by an indifferent bartender...

By KMAF74 |

30 years of great meals, but an unpolished, indifferent bartender tarnished my latest visit. He was too busy discussing his latest Broadway show with a fellow employee to be bothered with customer service. Comments such as “how was that one?”, referring to an appetizer, added to the short-order approach to service. A long-serving and excellent barback salvaged the evening by filling in gaps left by the philistine behind the bar. The end of a long standing pre-theater tradition.

Fine Dining

By Richard D |

Met here for dinner with a friend, and the meal was superb. The service was attentive and polite. Baby Kale salad and Seared Foie Gras started things off and both met every expectation. Our entrees were Farro Risotto and Halibut and they, too, were delicious. While you might need to bring a black/gold card to buy a bottle of wine, there were several good options in the $100 range.

Dated

By HonestMcHonest |

Had great meals here back in the day - now it is dated and tired. The food is solid but nothing remarkable - beautiful decor - staff is not very friendly or helpful

Best restaurant of the trip

By Lhodges290 |

Have always wanted to go and am sorry I waited so long. Without a doubt the best food of the trip. Outstanding service, amazing food, love the atmosphere, fabulous wines. A must do and I plan to come back next visit to the city.

True NYC Vibe

By Stourley B |

This place has the running beat and the soul of New York City. Classic dishes that are very good. But few if any courses are really amazing, thus not hitting a top score. But you can not beat the atmosphere.

Just superb

By paulagallaghers |

We visited Gotham Bar and Grill on our last night in NY and only wished we had the chance to go again! The service was outstanding our food was outstanding and would highly recommend this restaurant for people who appreciate good food 😍

Delicious lunch

By Cassysj |

Went for lunch with friends and we had excellent service and good food. I'm fussy and they prepared it as requested.

Excellence over the decades

By m r |

The owner/chef concentrates on the Gotham instead of wandering to other restaurnats, etc. The consequence is consistent super excellence. I made a point to seek him out and complement him on this visit. Decor is original which is perfect. French techniqque is obvious. Winter squash soup hit more notes than the NY Philharmonic could ever do. One os the worlds best restaurants

NYE 2017 Dinner

By YYC Travel Dad |

I’m late to this review but I had NYE dinner here and it was one of the most memorable meals I’ve had. The food was amazing, the atmosphere and music were spot on. Highly recommend this and would definitely go back.

Terrific lunch

By Value4Price |

The food was very well made and a something special without being overly fancy. Service was impeccable.

Pleasantly surprised

By spilihp |

After having lunch at le bernardin an nougatine, I wasn t sure if I would like it as much... but the lunch was really tasty, it was hard to choose because it all looked good. The service also was very friendly. I would definitely tecommend the Gotham Bar and Grill!

A NYC Classic

By Kimberly F |

While in NYC, Gotham Bar & Grill is a must. Classic New York style, and everything is good on the menu. One of the best cocktail menus in the city, and fantastic service.

INCREDIBLE! AMAZING!!

By Mike H |

INCREDIBLE! AMAZING!! Just a few words to describe my new favorite restaurant in NYC. Service, drinks & food was second to none. They bent over backwards to make someone like me w/ modest means feel like a NYC high roller.

Always Wanted To Come

By JoJosontheroad |

Have always wanted to come here. I have all of Alfred Portale’s cookbooks, but I am way too intimidated to try any of the recipes so it was super fun to go. Just simply elegant atmosphere, beautifully plated food and wonderful flavors. I have to agree that the service seemed off. Cursory seems like a good word to describe it as used by AC00121. The staff was friendly and answered questions, but maybe just too busy to make me feel welcomed? Maybe I'm, just being picky.

Outstanding Food & Service

By ct_coronado |

This is on our list whenever we get to NYC. The food is outstanding and the service too. A major bonus is the atmosphere. I notice all the details, decor, layout, lighting and acoustics and they knock it out of the park. Whether you are eating in the dining room - or the bar - you can't go wrong. Love it.

Dinner

By Asadullah Kazmi |

We were a party of ten celebrating our friends birthday. Before I write about the food one thing be careful of in this restaurant is that they also wants to make money over sparkling and still water. Sad to have seen this in a well known establishment like this as the waiter kept on pouring without asking in nearly full glasses all evening. Now to food, my starter was quite bad foie gras terrain please avoid. I had forgotten that the American Resturant likes to char it’s steaks which I absolutely hate so I think that takes care of my food. The cod was however liked a lot and also the lobster. Never seen so tiny s helping with desert it was a joke. The bill was nearly $1400 including tax an average for a good restaurant but in this restaurant we felt like we were being ripped off.

What a great dining experience in all aspects.

By tmjk32 |

Just a wonderful place to dine. Ask for Gabrielle and Latif to wait your table. The ambiance, food, drinks, desert and the staff are top notch. The Maitre D is a very involved individual......true teamwork at this restaurant. This was our first visit to GB&G and we'll go back every time we visit NY.

Consistently great food with a decade in-between.

By Outspokentraveler |

Before I left NY a decade ago, a favorite restaurant from the .com years until I left was Gotham Bar & Grill; having gone last Saturday night, it has not lost any one of the several topnotch flavors and atmosphere. We had the Halibut entree (listed under "Third") and the shrimp and tomato Risotto. The Halibut was served with quinoa, which I don't care for, and zucchini, al dente. The Halibut could not have been better cooked and lightly spiced, and the quinoa was delicious with the fish and zucchini -- so I learned to like quinoa there! The Risotto was slightly undercooked, but the spicing and shrimp made it a very good entree. The Apricot sorbet was, well, you wish they grew all year. A few tips about the unusual space; we sat by the front, which was also near the waiters station, which made you feel like they hover; in the rear, a wide room with beautiful floor-to-ceiling windows facing a green cape, it can be very noisy; so the secret? sit in the middle. A decade later and it was: let's come back next time we come to NY. So speaks, eats, and enjoys, the OutspokenTraveler.

The reputation is well deserved.

By light122376 |

We went for lunch, and the place filled up quickly. The service was expert and the food was excellent. The fixed price menu also makes it quite reasonably priced.

Perfect place for any celebration--lovely space, fabulous food and dazzling service.

By Marion T |

Just walking in, you know you are in for something special. The dining room with its silk-wrapped chandeliers and subdued colors is beautiful. The meal lives up to expectations. Perfectly cooked rack of lamb, succulent chicken, roasted cod with an Oriental flavor, and fresh seafood salad were the dishes we tried, and each was excellent. Then the desserts--dazzling! Hot cherry souffle, passion fruit souffle, homemade sorbets and even an whole tarte tatin to share! Service was polished with gracious welcome, helpful wine advice, and impressive presentation of each course by a bevy of waiters. A memorable evening for us all!

Lunch at the bar

By starfruitvj |

I recently had a delightful lunch at Gotham Bar and Grill. I was offered a seat either at a table or the bar and opted for the bar. I choose a crisp and cold Sauvignon blanc and went for the $38 three-course Greenmarket Lunch. My first course was a delicious pea soup, perfect for spring. My main was a flavorful goat cheese tortellini. And for dessert I went with the classic warm Gotham Chocolate Cake which came an amazing scoop of ice cream. The courses were well paced, but I was still in and out within an hour, which is perfect for lunch.

Awesome Dining Experience!

By cooker72 |

Another TA recommendation....did not disappoint! Drinks were awesome, food was awesome, and service was awesome! A delightful meal. Halibut and Pork Chop were delicious!

Gotham--- Still Good, But...

By JGC |

My wife and I have been to Gotham Bar & Grill many times, but have not been there in a few years. Our recent visit was enjoyable; the service was good and so too was the food. However, it did not have the spark of earlier years---maybe thats because there are so many new restaurants in NYC that offer as good if not better dining options and are far less expensive.

All around great experience

By rolfb298 |

This restaurant has been around for a very long time but it keeps getting better. The service is discreet, non-obtrusive but highly professional and attentive. The food is outstanding and well deserving of the Michelin Star. It is innovative, light and very flavorful. All around it is a memorable experience that I highly recommend

Delicious, comfortable and elegant

By J M |

Though this was my first time at the restaurant, Gotham has been around for years. The quality of the food and service are excellent and our waiter couldn't have been nicer or more professional. We had lunch for a friend's birthday and there were no disappointed stomachs. The food is fresh, plentiful and sumptuous. My fish was perfectly cooked as were the dishes of my friends. Tables are far enough apart that you are not obliged to hear the conversations of others. Prices for a lunch of this quality are very reasonable. Highly recommend.

Amazing food

By Debbie A |

Ambiance was nice. Food was wonderful. We particularly enjoyed the seafood salad. Fresh and flavorful. Steak was delish and Cheesecake for dessert was the perfect finish to an outstanding meal. Server started out great and then almost completely disappeared. The food will keep us coming back but now we know what to expect with service...

Friday night NYC

By victoria w |

A friend recommended this place - so thank you Victor! Beautiful environment, old school decor and service. Ate at the bar, beautiful bottle of California wine, my husband ordered the filet and I chose the seared chicken breast. Both dishes were perfection. Service is outstanding. Will be back next time in NYC.

Good but nothing special

By JollyGreenGiant |

TL;DR: Overall the food was okay, but nothing special. Specifics, the Foie Gras was rich, creamy, and flavourful. I truly enjoyed it. The dish was plated well, with figs accompanying the foie gras to balance the richness of the duck. But it was far too little in my opinion; there should have been more on the plate to provide better balance. The main, the lamb, was nothing to be sought after. The fat wasn’t rendered properly and it was a tad under seasoned. with this being said, it did melt in your mouth, the cook was on point, and the garnish was good. All-in-all, the restaurant was just OK.

Dinner

By tat15 |

Another culinary experience in New York. Loved the service, very attentive but not disruptive. We were never rushed to the next course. And the food.. delicious through and through. Must try ravioli appetizer and rack of lamb.

Very good, but . . .

By Northern_Traveler00 |

As I've seen a few times in other reviews, they really do pack 'em in! For these prices, I'd rather be closer to my tablemates than to the folks at the next table. Plenty of restaurants in NYC of all prices ranges have room around the tables. When you have to pull the table out 2 feet from the back wall to get the diners into there your tables are too close together! We had a GREAT meal with dear friends on Saturday night. Shared two apps (tuna tartare and seafood medley), and each had a different entree (strip steak, bass, chicken, halibut), and everyone enjoyed. The steak was too big to finish! Dessert was the chocolate cake, very dark chocolate. Online menu lists pear sorbet, but they had "just changed it to coconut". Online menu still shows pear. Sorry to have missed that. This would have been a 5 review, but for the noise. There was a party at a table nearby celebrating a birthday (50, so they should know better) who brought props (leis, blow up photo of party members) and were SO loud that we ended our dessert and lingering before we were really ready to. We understand it is difficult to try to reign in partiers without offending them, but the patrons at surrounding tables need to be considered as well. I'm going to say "not wheelchair accessible" due to how packed together the tables are.

Shocked w/Service

By Jan F |

My first visit to this restaurant was for a late lunch with my husband. We were greeted by a friendly hostess, and seated immediately. Bus staff delivered water, and then a server arrived at our table and said "are you ready to order" - no hello, can I get you a drink? Very indifferent throughout our meal, like she would rather be anywhere but there working. We enjoyed the excellent food, but next time we will make sure to have anyone else but "Sarah" as our server.

Brilliant meeting place

By Ben M |

Went there with my lovely wife for a few drinks . Didn't feel like a full meal so went to the upstairs where we had pizza and some bubbly. Service was quick , polite and cheerful . The pizza was probably the best we have ever tasted . My wife also ordered a espresso martini which she also rated as fantastic. Very enjoyable evening. Will definitely return soon

For some reason it didn't strike a chord

By LisaMDL |

There was nothing 'wrong' with this restaurant and I feel a bit 'sorry' not to have enjoyed it more. It was high on my wish list when planning our NYC trip (based on a combination of references from others and I THINK a high mention in a Qantas in flight magazine??) but whether it is just that we were too engrossed in catching up with our friend to notice the food or whether the food just wasn't worth noticing, I'm not too sure. The overarching thought I did have was how ridiculously small the amount of duck was on my plate for a price of $49. The seafood salad was fresh and 'nice' but was it 'fresh and nice' enough for $28? My husband raved about the miso black cod though. We were seated at a table right at the front, out of the main dining area, which I shouldn't complain about because it meant we could talk openly and hear each other but on the other hand it didn't really feel like we were 'in' the restaurant to feel any sort of ambience of the place. Maybe we need to try it again but I'm just struggling to correlate the price with the level of enjoyment derived from the dishes.

Uniform Disregard

By decei1 |

Gotham Bar and Grill caters disappointment even within Restaurant Week’s posed perimeters acclaiming price bargains and intros to how the better half usually eat. Intent evaporated and consequently anything else addended fell, unless contempt was their primary ingredient. Even coffee had in the context of requesting and final presence detours to a clouded meal sabotage: a most innocuous wish for coffee with milk necessitated repetitious disbelief and upon arrival was excellently calibrated to room temperature of which I drank some, but could not rationalize well enough that this is the sanctioned heat. When the server acknowledged the condition and returned with a coffee pitcher, he most elegantly poured hot disdain over the remaining cup of lukewarm brew leaving a mathematical distraction: heat plus no heat equals what. The place was crowded and many were waiting to be seated and expressed an anticipated luncheon rejuvenation, but shortly would be slapped by a drowned tasteless hung-out Arctic Char something and kale salad mass. Restaurant Week is about differentiation. This place has a uniform disregard.

We Loved Gotham, but note that it's a big experience...Attitude and Prices

By MrGaucho1987 |

The Gotham is an upscale dining venue. It is not cheap. It’s a class act and you pay for a class act in NYC. The room is very warm and comfortable. Lots of metals and woods. On Friday the place had a palpable buzz without being too loud which was a treat. The service was similarly first-class. Our server Nicole, an obvious pro, answered all of our questions with grace. I suspect she represents the service here very well. The food was all good. The tuna tartare and the ravioli had very good flavor. Similarly, the miso cod and steak were masterfully prepared and similarly tasty. Not the very best I’ve ever had, but solid offerings. This place is pricey, so come prepared for a little sticker shock. Bring a fancy date or a high-end business client. I would not hesitate to return.

It keeps getting better

By rolfb298 |

My favorite restaurant in NYC keeps getting better. Everything was just perfect during my last visit. The food is absolutely amazing, innovative, incredibly flavorful and light. The Halibut is just fantastic and we had a cherry souffle that was to die for. The service is as always, very attentive without being obtrusive.

No frill delicious Michelin star experience in Manhattan

By jay_fra |

I wanted to have a fast and delicious meal on Sunday evening, and booked Gotham Bar & Grill. From the attentive service to excellent taste, the restaurant delivered a pleasant experience. I had an appetizer, a pasta dish, entree and dessert from a la carte menu, the sequence of the dishes and the presentation were just perfect. I particularly enjoyed the wild mushroom, aged goat cheese tagliatelli. Tuna tartare was fresh with a beautiful presentation. Miso black cod was slightly too salty for my taste but it was still a great dish. I did not have wine, just had sparkling water. The total bill was just above 100 US$. Well done to the entire team at Gotham Bar & Grill!

A deserved Michelin star !!!

By silviuh405 |

The atmosphere never changers in this beautiful place, the attention from the moment you walk in, the food is so tasty and the deal that they offer , for the quality of food , it can be beaten. A must .

Really?!!

By Savlanoot |

I don’t get most of the reviews. The service was uneven, at best, while the restaurant was less than half full for lunch..I had wanted the yellowtail appetizer—to bad, they had just “run out”. The substitute seafood salad was boring. I ordered a pasta that was the first item under Mains, too spicy without being described as such, I couldn’t finish it . The best meal in our group was the burger. The desserts were okay, but hardly exceptional. Certainly not my first choice for a Manhattan dining experience. Maybe they were up to standard when they opened OR don’t go for lunch.

Mediocre dinner at Gotham .

By Ignacio B |

Even though I’ve been in Gotham a couple of times before for lunch this was my first time for dinner. It was an especial night for us and nothing was really special, just an average dining experience in New York City. We didn’t find any magic or interesting personality, just all right food and mediocre service. Definitely not what you expect from a Michelin starred restaurant, nothing really remarkable, it was just all right nothing really remarkable...a really bland experience without memories at all. I would love to say the contrary but unfortunately this is the sad truth.

Excellent service

By Peña T |

The food is extraordinary and do not talk about the staff .... Excellent deal. Highly recommended.. If you ask me for an opinion on the dishes El braised short rib.. Delicious meat

Expected more, it was just OK

By 1987porsche944 |

I grew up in NYC, spent a huge chunk of my adult life eating both high-end and inexpensive meals here. Spent 5 years as a chef in another major city. Had high expectations for this meal. Was left wanting. It was GOOD, but it wasn't GREAT. I would have rated it 4, but the servers didn't seem enthused or invested in creating rapport with us, and that also took away from the experience. Overall, service was perfunctory, we never had to wait for anything, waters were refilled, empty plates whisked away instantly. I felt like the server only spent mere seconds at the table. I don't recall her name, or her face, or any particulars, and I generally enjoy talking with waitstaff. Most restaurants of this caliber serve an amuse bouche of some sort, but we did not get one here. Not deducting points for that, but I had been hoping the chef would showcase a bite of something. We ordered three appetizers: the deviled eggs, which were nice and creamy with a hit of saltiness from the roe on top but seemed to be missing an herbal or acidic note, seemed one-dimensional; the salt cod croquettes, which I liked very much - a nice crunch to the outer shell, soft cod inside, the aioli was a touch mild I thought; and the red and yellow beet salad - the beets were very fresh and tasty but there seemed to be a lack of dressing along with them. To be fair, the beets were good quality, but I can also get good quality beets and roast them at home, so the lack of an acidic dressing was noticed and lamented. Entrees: the duck breast was fantastic, cooked a perfect medium rare, with a nice winter-y demi glace that seemed to have a hint of nutmeg to it. We all agreed that this was the winning entree. The Miso Cod came in second - the sauce was very good but after a few bites seemed to become too salty. I did very much like the crispy sweet char on the edges of the cod. I do prefer the Miso Cod at Nobu. The last entree was the Dry Aged New York Strip. It seemed to be missing all the dry aged funk you would get from a good old steak. The "mustard custard" made me angry because it seemed to take the good part of the mustard - the kick - and eliminate it, thereby creating a pile of what I like to call "the memory of mustard" on the plate. I'm pretty sure the menu is catering to a less adventurous and maybe older crowd. And that is fine, but I wanted to point this out. The flavors are delicate and refined, but also very muted and mild. These reviews are all subjective of course, and this is based on a one-time visit by me. I would return for the duck breast, but not any of the other dishes I had. I wouldn't dissuade anyone from this generally good experience, I just personally expected more.

All-round excellence at a true classic

By Acer sed justus |

This turned out to be a wonderful setting for a set lunch for 4… that lasted much of the afternoon. Have been a number of times over the years, and this place is - at least - as good as ever.

Fantastic affordable lunch menu

By Kim S |

3-4 course of very very nice food served within an hour is excellent. It is a very noble place though, so dress up. Located right next to a small cozy park.

More like an university faculty club than a New York business restaurant

By HenryNYC |

The simple street entrance leads to a rather ample interior. Wait staffs are very well trained and, together with a rather sophisticated menu and a very good wine list, you will have a good dining experience. I like lunch meal and seats in the back. It is much quieter than most of the New York restaurants.

Disappointing

By JMBOR |

GB&Grill has been one of our favorite restaurants. We’ve been coming here for almost 35 years, often for celebratory occasions. The service had always been top notch and the food .... delicious! We went a few nights ago to celebrate our daughter in law’s milestone birthday. Lots of changes.....No selection of fresh bread.... whole grain and that was it. The tuna tartare $$ was about 1/3 of the size it used to be. The NY strip was very salty ... no onion ring, but instead a big plate of French fries.... verrrry salty. Why fries? Their volume morphed the beef. I had the rack of lamb and it was very good. Not as much sauce as I usually get with this dish. We had informed the restaurant (when we made the reservation and that evening when we arrived) of the birthday and in the past they’d put a candle on top of a dessert .... After we had paid the bill and all the glassware and service had been removed someone put a candle in some cake balls and brought it to the table... Ugh, a tad too late. Also, in general I didn’t think service was not up to the standard. Seemed to be fewer servers or more people dining simultaneously. Thus, my “disappointing” rating. J O’Reilly

good but service and food not tops

By dsk188644 |

as a party of six I was probably the least satisfied. I ordered halibut as a main course and it was overcooked. others took surf and turf and the lamb cutlets and it all looked great. thought service was a little distant too. perhaps just not my day but a one star michelin should be perfect.

Ideal place for a special occasion

By jdtravels14 |

Gotham really nails the classic, bustling NYC atmosphere. We had visited for my birthday, when it was decorated for the holidays, and while it was definitely sophisticated, it was not too formal or stuffy. The management and wait staff went out of their way to make sure we had a great time. I feel like the entire restaurant knew my name and that it was my birthday. In terms of service and how they treat you, it is the best restaurant I have ever been to for a celebration. The food is also delicious. The rack of lamb and seared foie gras were excellent. Especially the rack of lamb. Could not recommend this place more for a special occasion (especially during the holidays!).

Eating in NYC without eating at Gotham is just plain wrong.

By David Pimentel |

This iconic NYC eatery is as good as it gets. Just step inside and you feel the Gotham vibe. Head to the bar, be greeted by a warm smile and have an expertly constructed margarita or whatever tickles your taste buds. We have been going for a decade, newbies compared to others. It’s one of those places. You find yourself making “excuses” to go back. The menu options and attention to detail are artistry. The wine list under Josh now has many selections from lesser known, yet amazing, wine regions for the wine geeks. You can now pop two or three bottles without getting third degree burns from the credit card receipt. There are certain places in the World that someone should at. Gotham is in that list. Saúde!

always delivers a great experience

By Jack M |

I've been going to Gotham since it opened 25 or so years ago. It is definitely my favorite restaurant in NYC and on my personal TOP 10 list. The food is fantastic, the wine list is extensive & expensive, bordering on insane, so the sommelier's knowledge is essential to avoid breaking the bank--do not be afraid to ask for guidance. The wait staff are fully professional and unobtrusive but very attentive--a magical balance. The room is beautiful, with these upside down parachutes hanging down, creating perfect lighting for the lovely diners. The place is very popular and our party of 4 had to wait for our 9pm table at least 30 minutes. Much apologies from the host.

Classic, as good at it gets

By Diego P |

Unpretentious ambience. An outstanding service led by Mark (knowledgeable, polite) and the best possible food. Highest marks for the seared foie gras, seafood salad, miso cod and grapefruit terrine. Maine lobster was also great. Food is not “modern” nor “fusion” ... simply classical, carefully crafted. Good portions, very fresh fish, well balanced flavors. A traditional Michelin awarded restaurant. My wife and I were simply delighted.

Classic New York

By ROBERT I |

Hearing about this special venue for years, we tried it for a recent dinner. While the reviews are mixed, we can only report our experience. We had a very fine experience. The service was thoughtful, attentive and solid. The venue itself is now a classic design, with tables on tiers. This gives a sense of privacy and adds to the relaxed feeling for those who are seated away from the more regular rows of tables. The food was first rate. The rack of lamb was the best that I have found. All dishes were first rate. We had a relaxed, first rate dining experience. Highly recommended. High end pricing.

First night in New York

By Ordinarybloke1 |

My wife and me met up with my sister and her husband on our first night in New York and decided that the Gotham Bar and Grill would be the place to do this. First time visit we decided to sit at the bar and indulge in some cocktails which were excellent. Ordered some food to eat at the bar which included a very small pot of peanuts which on reflection were very expensive at $9. However, the whole experience was one which got our holiday off to a great start.

Outstanding😀

By bramble15 |

The best food we had in Ny. It’s busy and bustling, we had a nice table midway in. There’s a lot going on and it’s airy and light decor. The food was outstanding, I had the tuna tartare ‘perfect’ and my wife had the tiger prawns also excellent. For mains we had miso black cod (best ever) and the surf and turf. Everything was beautifully presented and don’t go without trying the chocolate cake for dessert. We’ll go again...

A delightful return visit

By Bobby H |

It has been over a decade since i last visited Gotham, located in the village. For this particular occasion, i visited with my husband and a friend for dinner. I waited at the bar and enjoyed a delightful cocktail (the Vesper) while i want for the other two to arrive. The drink was perfectly made. The meal was fantastic. We ordered several appetizers and main courses to share. The service was formal but not too fuzzy, tuned to deliver a fine-dining experience. Stand out dishes include the terrine of foie and chicken, the seared foie, the smoked duck salad, the lovely dry aged New York steak, and the rack of lamb: an array of fine dining classics done impeccably. For dessert, the cherry souffle stands out as well as the chocolate cake that is to die for. The meal was not cheap (but then that should be pretty obvious), but the portions are all generous and the service was fantastic. I hope to return to Gotham again.

Anniversary dinner

40 years justified a trip to”Gotham City” Our dinner capped a wonderful w. Saw My Fair Lady At Lincoln Center and had a marvelous time and meal here. Beat rack of lamb ever. Very good wine list as well. Service was good and professional. Teriffic atmosphere in a very attractive space.

Everything was simply perfect

I had dinner with my nephew here after a business meeting. I arrived early and was escorted to the bar while I awaited my nephew. The greeting by the hostess was warm and welcoming. The bartender was attentive and efficient. The seating at the bar was comfortable. The ambience in Gotham Bar & Grill was warm and cozy. Upon my nephew's arrival, we were seated immediately. Our server was exceptional in terms of being knowledgeable and attentive to our needs. When my dessert was not as warm as I thought it should be she insisted on replacing it. Great food and strongly positive overall experience. Thank you.

Always Amzaing!

We had the best dining experience here with our friends from our of town. They were as we were thoroughly impressed with the quality and consistency in which this restaurant maintains it high standards for quality service and well presented food. The wait staff iia attentive but not overbearing. While the prices are a little high, the quality makes it worth it. We try to eat here a few times a years to enjoy to culinary changes in the menu.

Great Place to Bring Friends

By Antionio10 |

It had been thirty years since I was last at this restaurant, and the previous three times left me underwhelmed. I gave it a chance and stopped going. Now 30 years later I have returned and wow, has the food improved (or my taste buds have weakened). The meal -- fish, pasta, starters -- all quite good and with service to match.

Dinner, in town for business

By Barbara B |

Have been coming here for 30 years! And that does not mean in any way stodgy! Just go. The food is never short of fabulous, as is the service. I had soft-shell crab appetizer & the lobster entree (Asian-influenced) was to die for. They make their own ice creams too, so at least get a tiny scoop. Lovely, comfortable atmosphere. They know how to do it flawlessly!

Nice Ambience - Great Food.

By mikegallaghers |

Really enjoyed our night out at the Gotham. Ambience was nice and the food was really good. Had the Black Cod and would thoroughly recommend it. Give it a go you won’t be disappointed!

Fading

By BCFortuny |

The Grill has been our favorite place during the 90’s , so it was planned to be a nostalgic experience (this time with kids). The service and the reception have been excellent. One can feel the self confidence of a well established team giving attention to details without making it look like an effort. The food was good, but not inspiring ( apart from the salads and the vegetables, which were both excellent). What we really missed was the atmosphere - the layout of the restaurant still works fine, but the dressing down attitude and the time have taken its toll...

Discovering Gotham

By KovácsZoliPisti |

I visited Gotham Bar & Grill together with my children to celebrate birthday of them. We arrived by 9:00 pm, the restaurant was quite busy. The food we ordered was very delicious, presented on a very beautiful way. Vine was tasty. The service was really excellent. The enteriör showed up local scene. So we did have an enjoyable dinner in the night. Price to value was bit high, but I’m probably returning back.

Great experience

By Mark Aurini |

From the wonderfully friendly host, our servers and our meal, this restaurant certainly lives up to its reputation. The meals were well prepared and the service was spectacular. We refrained from the $4500 bottle of wine but our Sommelier had many other selections. If you have a chance to go, go!

Simply marvellous

By Chris W |

My wife and I had the pleasure of dining at GB&G on Saturday evening. We had a wonderful time. We enjoyed the food and the surroundings are very pleasant but it's level of service that really sets this restaurant aside.

Mediocre at best

By CarusoII |

We were disappointed with our meal at Gotham. For a Michelin star restaurant, the food was very mediocre. My girlfriend and I had the seafood salad and a shrimp dish to start. The seafood salad was ceviche style. While most of the items in the salad were good, the calamari was extremely rubbery. The shrimp dish had a nice spice but the shrimp were over cooked. We had two entrees. The black miso cod and the surf and turf. While the piece of cod was nice, the sauce was way too sweet and over powered the dish. The surf and turf was ok. Lobster was again chewy and the short rib was cooked in a Hoisen style sauce that was way too sweet. For desert, we split the chocolate cake which again was average. We didn’t finish our entrees or our desert which is rare. The wine, based on the sommelier’s recommendation was excellent. The service was otherwise average. Our waitress was humorless. I don’t mind spending $350 for two but this was a colossal waste of money.

Great nyc spot

By Lisa C |

We enjoyed dinner on a Saturday night. It has that old nyc club type vibe. Food is very good. We enjoyed the tuna tartare and the salmon. Also the cod is done well. Would recommend if you want consistently good food and not looking for cutting edge cuisine.

Restaurant week lunch a steal!

By stilliwonder |

Thank you Stephen and Sarah for making this birthday lunch for my 88 year old Dad a sweet memory. You doted on him, surprised him with a slice of your famous chocolate cake and reminded us why you have been a fixture on the NY dining scene for decades. We never felt rushed and lingered over our reasonably-priced bottle of wine. My sister and I are oh so grateful.

Never misses a beat

By _klassendouglas |

GB&G is not a restaurant we go to often, but we’ve been there more than a dozen over the past two decades. This restaurant just never disappoints. Its service is always outstanding - friendly but totally professional and well-informed. The dishes, including some standards over the years, are always superb. It’s not the most inventive or creative cuisine in the city, but it is 100% reliably excellent. We’ve never had a disappointing meal. Over the years, the decor has changed little, if at all, but it always looks fresh - nothing seems worn or out-of-date - and it becomes comforting to know you will recognize it all, like an old friend. GB&G is too expensive (including its wine list) to be a regular stop for us, but for special occasions - or going out with demanding friends - it’s a place you can count on to deliver and leave with the sense that you know why the bill was as high as it was. Not a “value”, but definitely a well-earned premium.

Still great After All these Years

By Wiscyken |

It is hard to maintain quality in the restaurant business but Gotham has been able to do it. This is one of my favorite dining spots in New York. The tuna tartare appetizer is one of their classic dishes . On my recent visit, I had lamb chops and they were perfect Outstanding service

Food great, service poor

By Oreo |

Excellent menu and food. Tonite service was very slow, nonchalant and cursory. A real disappointment given the strong menu and previous good experience.

Celebrate with great food

By Fernanda K |

My birthday was celebrated here. The restaurant kept the secret of our special guest and with flowers for the table and a birthday cake with my name and candles. We started with caviar - a service for each guest. Then each followed with a pasta - risotto with spring vegetables and wild mushrooms or ravioli filled with sublime cheese. And the chocolate birthday cake. They paired glasses of wine with each course. It was a delightful meal both delicious as well as celebratory. Their reputation is well deserved

Food 5, Service 2

By Mike |

Went for dinner with family. Sat at the bar, had a drink and waited for our reservation. Place was busy but we sat right away. Once at the table, took the waitress a while to greet us (10-15 minutes to get bread, water, and fresh drinks). While ordering, could tell the waitress was sour about something. not even a smile. The food, once received, was delicious, well prepared and beautifully presented. No issues there, the chef is outstanding. The service, however, left much to be desired. The wait to be greeted and the poor attitude presented by her throughout the meal unfortunately took away from what could have been an outstanding night out.

Favorite Neighborhood spot

By JamesJoseph |

My wife and I go to Gotham a few times a year at least. It is our favorite neighborhood place to treat ourselves. We went there last week and could not have been happier. I had an amazing steak from Nieman ranch absolutely superb! and my wife had the Lobster which was also excellent. The appetizers were a delight as well. My wife does not drink so I am always pleased by the selections of wine by the glass. A true gem - and if you ask early the Tartine is a great dessert choice.

No longer worth the price

By Dorothy C |

Gotham Bar & Grill has been our favorite special occasion restaurant for 25 years, but after our anniversary dinner there last week we've decided we need to find a new place to celebrate. It's still beautiful, with excellent service, but the portions have gotten even smaller, the prices higher, and the taste and presentation of some dishes has declined. As my husband said, "It's really just for the 1% now." I had wanted to order a glass of Chardonnay, but at $29 for a single glass, I decided to stick with tap water. My husband had been thinking of a glass of rose champagn, but at $27, went with a glass of still rose for $16. Second courses: The signature seafood salad ($28) is now a very small mound of seafood floating in a sea of dressing, and red pepper has been added to the classic dish, adding a heat at the edge of my comfort zone. The vegetable risotto ($29) was still excellent. I ordered ice cream for dessert. A large bowl arrived with only a couple of broken wafers visible at the bottom of the bowl. Under the wafers were 3 tablespoons of ice cream. Yes, the ice cream was good, but the minuscule portion and unattractive presentation were disappointing to say the least. We've celebrated many happy occasions and brought friends here also over the years, but this will be our last visit.

Outstanding meal

By Madurai86 |

My daughters and I had the great pleasure of eating at Gotham Bar and Grill for restaurant week a few days ago. With 3 of us we were able to sample everything on the lunch menu and nothing disappointed. In addition to flawless service the food was amazing. I would especially recommend the halibut ceviche, the artic char and unbelievable chocolate cake.

Wonderful anniversary lunch

By Traveling4food |

Went with my love for an anniversary lunch and we were not disappointed. Service was professional and impeccable, food was amazing plated nicely and had amazing flavor combination. A very good wine list on offer to compliment any meal. Will certainly visit again, thank you for making our anniversary lunch experience so good !

New York City classic

By AviCa |

The Gotham is located In the heart of Lower Manhattan, btween SoHo and Greenwich Village, close to New York University. Best steak ever. Delicious Mushroom Soup— not to creamy.

Disappointing service

By Edward |

While the food was exceptional as always, the service was so-so at best (bordering on indifferent). Be wary of ordering the tasting menu: in our experience, there were some VERY long gaps between courses when our server was nowhere to be found. Nor did he follow up to see how things were going. NYC has many restaurants helmed by truly remarkable, talented chefs -- there's no reason to settle for indifferent service at Gotham.

Nothing to complain about, nothing to write home about

By OnehandEconomist |

Nicely done but not earth shattering. Good food, well cooked but you get the feeling that the maestro isn’t in the kitchen any more. Tables as close together as they can be (I mean when fellow diners leave do I really want to be eye ball to their waist band? Really?) It’s not going to be bad but you can do better for your money...

Great!

By Nate |

The presentation of the food at Gotham is spectacular! So many great options to choose from, and everything tasted great! Our waiter was very nice, and attentive. I strongly recommend Gotham.

Outstanding bar food options and seevice

By PrinceMacK |

I was on my own for work and decided to check out the Gotham bar. The food is very expensive but the options at the bar are cheaper. Bar staff was very attentive and they offer you bread choices before your meal. For my meal I decided to get two bar menu items. The sweet corn tortellini dish was the highlight. The place is more formal than most other restaurants. It’s located a 5 minute walk from a subway. I would definitely go back for a smaller meal at the bar again.

Good food but some dishes are uninspired

By Pamela H |

I had a good whole branzino, but it lacked pizzazz. My two companions had an excellent pasta made with almond pesto and tomato sauce. Very good Provençal rose and caramel dessert. Nice place to go for lunch on a hot summer day. Quiet and civilized

Very nice place with easy atmosphere

By munkam6262 |

We had a lunch here ordered throu open table app, all over is a very good restaurant with very pleasant waiters. Lunch was nice, quick, and not too expensives for NY(240 usd inc. tip for 2 and few glasses of prosseco and wine), but accually the best has been desserts, chocolate cake was number one.

A Celebration to Remember

By VFL02 |

It was a girls weekend in NYC to celebrate our birthdays and we wanted a meal to remember. Everything was on point and worthy of a Michelin Star. Our server was not only personable, but very helpful with the recommendations. One of my friends ordered the cod and couldn’t stop talking about it, for the rest of the trip! I ordered the lobster tail & short ribs and they were perfect! The ribs melted in my mouth and the lobster tail was cooked to perfection. Will definitely be back for another round.

Great visit. Great cocktails.

By John J Nelson |

They were. Sry accommodating with our 1 year old. Great cocktails especially House old fashioned. Black cod was great as was tuna tartare. Group loved the cheeseburger as well. Fantastic looking bar. Clean restrooms.

Excellent.

By JenGC913 |

Excellent meal, honestly worth the amount that we paid. Stuck with cocktails for the evening, the foie gras as an appetizer, duck and lobster as our mains, the chocolate cake and terrine for dessert (I will be having dreams about that terrine...). The service was also spectacular. Special place to have a special meal and would go back. One thing to note- I'm not sure what the dress code was but every man there was in either a jacket or collared shirt. One gentleman had a t-shirt and stuck out like a sore thumb. Definitely a place to dress it up for the night. Thank you, Gotham, for a great experience.

Fame going to their heads

By miafioso |

First let me say that the food is top notch, always has been. The ambiance is tough to beat as well. My most recent trip however left me a tad bit annoyed. It was hot in Manhattan, really hot. We had a reservation for noon. We arrived at 11:45 and figured, worse case we could sit at the bar and wait or in their waiting area. No. They made me and my wife and about 7 other patrons wait outside in the heat until they opened. Now come on, use some common sense. But ok, that's their policy. They finally let us in at 11:55am and said we could wait at the bar. A moment later the bartender came out from the back. He didn't say hi, he didn't acknowledge our presence, he didn't even look up. I get it, you're not open yet, but at least say, "hi folks, I'm not quite open yet but I'll be with you in a moment" Nope, this place is famous and this guy is obviously a "professional" he doesn't even acknowledge people until he is ready to. Finally we were seated about 12:10. Our server was wonderful and the food great. Wine list is phenomenal. A tad disappointed in the beer list. Again, I know they're famous and can do whatever they want but only carrying micro-brews and the like is almost a punishment to a guy like me. It's hot, it's the City, my wife is drinking a $250 bottle of wine and I just wanted a cold beer. Something I know, a miller lite, a Stella, god forbid a Budweiser. I don't feel I should have to "try" some Brooklyn brew, that ultimately I took one drink of and left the rest. Anyway, it's their place they can serve what they want but even the Plaza and 21 Club has Miller Lite. Don't get so famous that you can forget about customer service, it destroys places.

Great food; old school environment

By Diane P |

First thing to know-it’s very expensive even for NY standards. With tip, my meal for ONE was $150 for a salad, the cod, 2 glasses of wine and dessert. But l left feeling like it was money well spent. Since I was traveling solo, I sat at the bar where the bartender was friendly and respectful. The kale salad was great although a bit overdressed. The black cod was amazing; one of the best dishes I have had in a long time. And the chocolate cake was wonderful - warm with different textures complementing it. Some would call this place dated and if you like the hip, trendy spots you may feel that way. I found it had old school charm. Loved this place!

A classic in NY

A classic restaurant with great meny and wine list accompanied with good service. Recommended for both business and special occasions.

Beautiful meal

By Susan O |

Went to Gotham for the first time last night, we went to the restaurant not the bar , we all had a beautiful meal. The steak was the best I have ever had, the girls serving were all very nice, service 1st class, well fitted out restaurant. We will b all going back again in the very near future.

Anniversary dinner

By EELNOR1 |

We went to NY for our anniversary and founf this place. Everything was Wonderful! Great service, Great food. Worth the price too.

Poor dining experience

By John P. |

Overall, I rated this experience a 2 due to poor service from our waiter combined with food that was good, but not great. For a Michelin rated and highly renowned restaurant, I expected much more from this establishment. I was shocked by how aloof our waiter was the entire evening. He was disinterested from the onset, seemingly insincere throughout the evening and, at times, borderline rude. On our way out of the restaurant, I discretely flagged down a manager to provide feedback and specific examples. The tuna appetizer and the Gotham chocolate cake were both very good, the entrees (duck & surf and turf) were less desirable. Unfortunate dining experience for a special occasion.

spectacular

By dacosolutions12 |

always great food and service ... very friendly. Attentive servers and fabulous appetizers ... eat at the bar for a quick bit before a show.

We All Need A Lift When The Time Comes

By Philip G |

The Gotham Bar and Grill is at the very top of many people's favorite NYC restaurants. I have been eating at Gotham for years, and the elegant room, service, and gracious presentation are still going strong. However, the kitchen has dropped a notch in its culinary preparation. Everything is good, but not great. My risotto was runny, tasting fresh, but not delicious. Fish dishes were good, but no one exclaimed great. In fact, the best dish at our table of five was the steak, surprising for a gourmet restaurant. Gotham Bar and Grill has been a "grand dame" of NYC restaurants for decades. It's still going strong, but like many of us, has lost a step or two. A refurb in both space and kitchen may be necessary. We all need a little "lift" when the time comes.
