On 69 New St near the Charging Bull and close to the ferry to Liberty Statue lies a small place. You go down the stairs then watch the counter, choose your pizza, pay and move in for the few tables that are available inside. Being a fan of Sicily I couldn’t help but ordering a slice of Sicilian pizza and one of grandma pizza plus a coke. That put 8 euro on the counter and I took my 2 slices and coke to a little bar and stool inside. Since it was lunch time I spent my time there surrounded by kids who were enjoying their pizza also and as I descended back to the counter I started seeing adults coming in for a quick bite to eat before going back to work. I was not overly impressed with the pizza. It was decent but in no way did it resemble the amazing taste from Italy. If you are there, in the area and you just go out from the boat from Liberty Island yes, this is an ok place to grab a bite before moving forward but in no way is it worth travelling from across town for a bite to eat.

This type of pizza place is what i was looking for. It didn’t disappoint. It isn’t the nicest looking pizza place you’ll find but it won’t matter once you try that pizza.

The staff helped me feed my staff and 20 children in our care - they made it easy for us. I am very grateful for the great food and great service. They added to the experience of a memorable day in Battery Park. Thank you! Gracias!!

Tried to go 11/17/12 but closed. Call first. Wouldn't let me post this without giving rating so ignore that. Just didn't want others to search around for it like we did and be out of luck.

We found this place while walking in the area after the Statue of Liberty tour. It is down a quiet (light foot traffic) road and also underground. There is nothing at all to the looks or location of this place but the pepperoni pizza and chicken parmagiana sandwich were delicious - served hot, fresh, and fast. They started getting busy around 11:30am and seating is very limited.

Friendly staff, willing to accommodate dietary requirements. Portions were large and they gave us carry boxes as too much food. Pasta sauce was fresh and tasty.

The place is a tucked away but once you get down to the restaurant you will be glad you did. The pizza was delicious and the service was terrific. The person working the counter stopped what they were doing to help me carry three trays over to the seating area. If you are down in the financial district and looking for pizza this is the place.

It's hard to be gluten free and watch everyone around you eat delicious pizza. Grotto has delicious gluten-free pizza. The crust was the best I've had. It didn't taste like pizza on a cracker, which is how GF pizza usually tastes. And the combinations of cheeses were perfect.

i was taken to this little pizzeria for lunch by a co-worker... it was famous for its shrimp parm... amazing sauce and even better with the big shrimps that were included... if you go, just be aware that the seating is a bit small, so expect to be cramped... but then just call in your order for pick up...

while walking around the financial district we asked a local "business" men in their suits where a good iconic NYC eatery and they showed us Grotto. Like previous writers, it's a hole in a wall,,,actually down in the street in their basement. Only one dig in this place, if you're clausterphobic, dont go to the sitting area....

Small venue located near NYC stock exchange. Correct and helpful service. Good and great pizzas. Add that they also have gluten-free. Recommended

Food was great large portions. Stopped there after visiting the Statue of Liberty. Ordered food and it came quickly. The wrap I ordered was delicious. My boyfriend ordered a meat ball sub. The meatballs tasted a lot like my own, being a italian that was awesome!

I have tried the chicken parm, egg plant parm, lasagna, honey mustard chicken , plain regular , plain and plain deep dish slices, and more of their pizza.....All are Great ! Don't be scared to walk down and see whats there. They also have hot food and calzones also. Seating is limited. Grouped on a shelf are all the add on's. Oregano, red peppers, grated chesse, etc. as a true New York Pizzeria should have. I am from N Y ......I know pizza ! Sauce is excellent ! Most say a good sauce makes a great pizza, very true here....so Manja !!!

Had the place almost to ourselves around five-thirty PM, paid 7.50 each for two slices of pizza. Good selection and no one was disappointed with their pizza choices. Decor unremarkable but the whole place seemed pretty clean.

I order from Grotto's often and they are always early or on time. The staff is very friendly! And their pizzas are great!

I found this restaurant when I'm strolling there and after eating all my pizzas and drinks, I realized how it's really authentic, traditional, delicious and how I'm lucky like this. I fully recommend.

I love this place! Friendly, fast paced, authentic Italian Perfect fora fast inexpensive delicious meal.

I've been coming to Grotto for a few months now. My company just moved into the area. Me and a few co-workers were told of this amazing hidden little Pizzeria right around the block. We went to go check it out. The atmosphere was great. The customers there seemed as if they have been going there for years, Very comfortable place. They have a sit down area, and the staff were very attentive and polite. We have eaten the pizza from there a few times. They have a great Tuesday pizza special...and we have continuosly gone back. Trying new things everytime we go. If you like a little spice, you should definitely try there buffalo chicken tenders, or even buffalo chicken slice! Mmmm...This place is definitely one for the books :)

My boyfriend and I were looking for a pizza spot downtown so I had him look at Tripadvisor to find a place to try. He came across the reviews for Grotto and they are dead on! Best Pizza I have ever had! We both had the lasagna pizza - mozzarella, tomato, sliced beef. The crust was perfect - thin and crispy and the tomato sauce was outstanding - a real tomato flavor -but not over done and heavy. They had stuffed pizza and a few others that looked as equally good as ours tasted, so they have something for everyone. They even had tacos! They have a lunch special during the week. Great find and will make it a must go to every time I'm in the city now!

You must, must, must try the chicken cutlet parmigiana calzone. I am certain that is the world's most perfect food! The Grotto is my "go to" place in downtown. They have been around since the 80's and have only gotten better and better. When the teachers from my school take students on a trip to the business district, they always stop at Grotto's for lunch. Friendly staff and and authentic mama's sauce!

You can't beat their tuesday specials. Great pizza and sandwiches, good prices and fast service! A little hard to find unless you know the area, but I honestly prefer it that way.

Delicious pasta, salad and gigantic garlic knots. The pasta primavera is amazing. Everything tasted home-made. An amazing, welcoming find for hungry tourists in the Wall Street area.

Financial district is hard to find cheap sit down food, but here is a good place. Thin crust pizza with plenty of seating. I’ll be back.

me and some friends were roaming arnd NYC....just decided to be lil tourists for the day even thought we live in NYC. We were in Downtown Manhattan. We got hungry so asked someone what was good to eat in the area! They directed us to Grotto pizzeria and WOW! soon as we went down the lil stairs they had a huge display of all kinds of pizza slices. I felt like i was in Pizza heaven ...they had an amazing bacon jalapeno slice..and we also had a honey mustard chicken slice...We had to try the regular cheese slice because You jusyt have to...Best Pizzeria I have ever eaten at by far!!! Go Grottos my new manhattan pizza spot!

Fake-Italian place, hidden 200 meters from Wall Street. Good pizza, even in the gluten-free version. Substantial dough, with a pizza (or two 1/4 slices taken individually) you can satisfy your hunger. This is why the 20 dollars for a margherita sounds bad but can be acceptable, considering Manhattan. Difficult to order: the girl who collects the orders is grumpy or in any case doesn't shine with flexibility and makes the bare minimum effort. You sit in a room that could never be accessible in Italy (ceiling just over 2 metres), tiny tables and not exactly comfortable. Free refill of drinks.

During a week-long trip to NYC, my mother and I were looking for an American pizza after a trip to Ellis Island (during the week we had already eaten at a super delicious little pizzeria in Brooklyn - which is highly recommended). After ordering, we received two slices of pizza that unfortunately made it to the top of our list of worst pizzas: The pizza had hardly any toppings, which were extremely sticky and the cheese not only pulled rubbery strings, but also didn't really taste like cheese. The slice itself was actually very small - and therefore not really worth the money in our opinion. There are definitely better restaurants in the area.

Picked Grotto due to ITA proximity to Battery Park. We were a little unsure due to the quiet street and step down to the restaurant. However, Mario welcomed us in and encouraged us that we could order any combination we wanted and was supper friendly. When the pizza arrived it was awesome. We had slices of chicken parm, buffalo chicken and margarita.

I was here for lunch today. They have a "2 slices of cheese pizza and soda for $5.50" special that is only good on Tuesdays. Today was a Tuesday, so that's what I had. My pizza was good but nothing special. The cheese pizza was like what you get from your average pizzeria. But I can't complain given the low price. I'm giving them four stars for the Tuesday deal. The seating area has a low ceiling and feels like a grotto. They have some small booths against one wall; a counter with swiveling chairs against the opposite wall; and about a half dozen tables for two in between, One nice touch: They have an Edward Hopper print of a painting that I am not familiar with (and I consider myself a Hopper fan) on the wall, above the counter/swiveling chairs.

Neat little pizza place right by the NYSE, I’m sure a popular lunch spot for Wall Street traders. Tightly packed inside.

This was a nice lunch stop in the Financial District, there are tables in the back to stop and take a break, prices here are reasonable for the area. Pizza slices $4 and yummy. The curly fries are flavorful and crispy. The staff very friendly.

I went here after running around lower manhattan...so I was hungry!! The pizza came quickly, the recommendations of the employes proved to be delicious and it was even good the next day as leftovers!

Everytime i am in downtown Manhattan, without a doubt I have to stop at Grotto's for there delicioussss Pizza...They have so many different varieties. Everytime I go I try a different slice and I am never disappointed. Something in that sauce that keeps me coming back. Wonder If they will share the recipe..lol I went with my friend and she ordered the Special of the day which they have a few differnt choices everyday. She ordered the Grilled Shrimp, with spinach alfredo and pasta. It was such a large portion that we shared it. And the flavors were just a PARTY IN MY MOUTH :) Not only is the food excellent..the staff is veryyyyy friendly and helpful, and they work very well together. What more can i say about the Grotto. If you haven't eaten here, you simply have not lived it up! :)

I had been in new york city for work this past weekend and had walk past Grotto during lunch hours and the place was filled. I assumed with the amazing smells dancing outside and the people rushing inside that this was the place for me. I walked down the stairs and was immediatly trasported into the kind of pizza restaurant I thought didn't exist any more. THEY MAKE PIES RIGHT BEFOR YOUR EYES! And lots of other food also. I couldn't believe the amount of loyal costomers they had that were constantly flowing in, many were know by name from all employees. If you want the best pizza and Italian food this is the place to eat!!

Pizza was phenomenal and gluten free was too. Great selection of other dishes too that all looked delicious. Very friendly staff. Highly recommended

We were starving after getting back from the Statue of Liberty, we looked up pizza places nearby and this one stood out. We arrived and felt welcome right away, they greeted us and told us they had space for all of us (party of 9.) We ordered a little bit of everything, pizza, calzones, salads, and other things to taste. Everything was delicious and we were stuffed and ready to continue our adventure. You have to try this pizza place, it won't disappoint.

I ordered my food at 11:30am and they did not deliver it until 1:30pm and they forgot half the order.

If you're hungry it's worth passing by and finding somewhere else to eat, as there are plenty of establishments out there. Service was slow from the off, having to wait for our order to be taken to receiving our drinks and then when we had decided to call it quits and leave, our food eventually arrived. Not the tastiest pizza / burger we've ever eaten, so not worth the wait.

My Daughter and I were visiting New York from Chicago and wanted to try New York style pizza to compare. Grotto's didn't disappoint, great flavor, a little lite on cheese although a perfect balance. Chicago style pizza still has our favor yet Grotto's came in at very close 2nd. The staff are extremely friendly, family oriented and welcoming!

When you think you know everything about life, that no food can bring you new flavours, specially ... pizzas... it comes a place like Grotto to tell you "how wrong you are".... The experience was truly unforgettable and this has to do with the best pizza I have ever tried. Slices are NYC size but it's not the quantity.... it's the flavour. Best cheese and a crunch doe I have never experienced before. This is a must for NYC pizza!! Oh man, so many good feelings. What a city!

The guys at the counter made it just as appealing to go there. Funny. Friendly. Fast. Something about this place made me just fall in love with it. Perhaps it was walking downstairs to get to the place which made it hidden down that alley that made it a "find". Not sure but I do know the pizza was awesome. The person I was with went crazy over the pizza that just had sauce. No cheese. She loves it that way. Me, could not comprehend not have cheese on my pizza. Crust was perfect. Sauce was great. Not salty at all. I also got these balls of dough that deep fried then dusted in powdered sugar. That was pure carbo heaven for me. Loved those. Their root beer is pretty good too. I would go back to this place for sure.

I've had pizza from here for years and never thought much of it. Some of it is way to doughy and just doesn't taste good. Lots of folks in the area like it but I have no idea why. I usually get the grilled shrimp and arugula salad when I go there and that's it. The garlic knots are good. Haven't tried anything but the pizza, garlic knots and salad.

We visited NY for a couple days and wanted slices for lunch after visiting the Statue of Liberty. This place came up as close by and as offering gluten-free options. We were skeptical when we entered but we were very happy when we got our pizza. Our gluten-intolerant daughter loved the GF pie (13" for about $13) and the slices were excellent too. My white slice was terrific!

They are awesome!! I called in a large order the day before delivery and they were very accommodating. They even provided suggestions that worked out in my favor. Ex. I ordered 2 large trays of wings and they suggested I mix it with tenders. It was a complete HIT with the coworkers. Everyone was very excited and enjoyed their lunch down to the last garlic bread. Definitely have to keep these folks in mind for my next order. Thanks again Grotto!!! :-)

Perfect stop for lunch while visiting the Financial District! Pizza was amazing and the assortment of options was even better. Other items to choose from besides pizza - a real family pleaser!

The best pizza, it was really delicious. I’m a fairly newly diagnosed coeliac (1 year ago) and really missed good pizza, (the gluten free ones are dry, hard, thin cardboard). This was just great pizza, great base, lots of yummy stretchy cheese and very tasty sliced sausage. Friendly New York staff that care about coeliacs, the server asked me to promote if I enjoyed it the pizza, hell yeah did I!

A hole in the wall kind of place that serves amazingly tasty pizza for a great price. They have a large selection of slices and other Italian dishes. There is a place inside to sit and eat and the service is friendly and fast.

Arriving at this restaurant you just seat yourself so we were a bit hesitant when there weren't many people and a lot of dirty tables. However, someone immediately came out to clean the table and we were happy about this. The food was good and well priced. The staff were really friendly and helpful. Cutlery is plastic and plates are paper so we wouldn't choose it for dinner deliberately but if you're in the city and want somewhere easy, it's definitely a decent place to go!

Really first impression is not the best of the world. Once inside, huge variety of food to eat or take away but also excellent pizzas, also gluten free. There isn’t a hidden place because downtown workers use frequently, but not specially on the tourist routes. Less than 5 min walk from the famous bull park.

Stopped in for a few slices for lunch. Used to come here more often when I worked in the area many years ago . Pizza was delicious.i really enjoyed the Chicago style pepperoni slice. NY style also available. Daily specials are also a nice feature.

Great tasting pizza and really nice salad with roasted vegeatables for an office party. delivery was prompt and the service was very good. We will definitely order from Grotto again.

In NYC this is a hidden pizza place that surprised us. We traveled the city on foot, so this was a nice break to sit and eat. They even had wifi. Glad we tried it. I got Grandma's pizza and it was good. I enjoyed the fluffy crust of the one I got. I'd go again.

Have been there during lunch sevral times. If you like new york pizza, you have to go there. The pasta is also excellent. There are some very unique choices which are sure to leave you too full. The portions are very generous. Quick in service, however can get very crowded at lunch time. With the NYSE floor brokers being a declining professsion, the crowd has gotten thinner over the years. No longer work in the financial district, but make it a point to go there when I am in the area to grab a quick slice. You should do the same.

After a long travel we eat there on of our first lunch of the trip. the place was down some stairs near another restaurant. We eat the pepperoni pizza, a must to try in the us. As an italian i can say without any doubt that was not bad at all! A positive surprise!

This is a classic New York pizza shop in the Financial District. They have at least a dozen pizza pies available and have prepared dishes. My family had the eggplant pizza, sicilian, white spinach, and the regular cheese. All the slices were excellent. If you are looking for a reasonable meal near Wall Street, Grotto is a must.

it is a very small place, the dining area is in the basement ! I had a veggie pizza, the sauce was tasteless, there were huge piece of veggie on top...I couldn't eat them ! my daughter had a cheese pizza and it was ok.

The food is delicious, but be ready to eat from plastic cuttlery. Good service. Tasty pizza and perfect chicken soup. Hidden gem.

The most fantastic gluten free pizza I've ever had in my 55 years. Think I'll go again today before I leave for England.

After a visit to Ellis island, Grotto Pizza was a short walk away. Awesome quality for a very reasonable cost. 6 of us including kids had pizzas and salads. Excellent quality, more than enough food. We added chicken to the salads. Very fresh. Staff were very friendly.

Been in the neighborhood forever. Has wonderful home cooked food and excellent pizza! Its the sauce that does it every time! Tony

The aroma of hot fresh pizza greets you the minute you arrive at Grotto's. The pizza is hot and the staff is warm and friendly. You feel like you've arrived at a friend's house not a restaurant. The seating area fills up quickly so get there early to avoid the crowds. One of my favorite places to eat downtown.

I was looking for carryout Italian close to Battery Park for a quick dinner. I was drawn to this place by TripAdvisor reviews and the obscure green beans marinara on the menu. I had a slice of marinara pizza, which I would not classify as NY Pizza, but was tasty. I also tried the greek salad and chicken/green beans/ pasta entree. The sauce in particular was excellent. The only low point was the greek dressing, which was a little sweet and not plentiful.

Great service and the food is great! Always really fast, We order from them once a week! They always follow up with a call at the end of the day to make sure that everything was good. Great customer service

Order lunch a few times a month, always a hit! Calzones, stuffed peppers, and rice balls are insane.

The pizza is fantastic, however, make sure you try some of their Lunch Specials. I am in the health and fitness industry and I take my clietns to the Grotto restaurant as I know I will always be getting fresh, healthy food for me and my guests. The staff is amazing and the prices are affordable.
Great Pizza in NYC
Went to Grottos after a visit to the Statue of Liberty. After walking up the stairs of the lady we were pretty hungry. A huge slice of pizza for $4 was just what the doctor ordered. Great and quick service and a place to rest our feet. Would definitely go here again.
