Japanese BBQ - delicious and fun

By boltuprightCanada |

As long as you don’t mind doing your own cooking, this is lots of fun. The ingredients were fresh and quantities were generous.

Nothing like we have had in Japan, but we enjoyed the dinner and the service

By StlmanChuck |

Quality of the food wa quite good and the sesrice was quite helpful. Food was served uncooked with a BBQ grillin the center of the table. We cooked the meat to our desired degree and the service people helped by cutting some of the foods were we needed the help. We will return.

Excellent meal!

By Molly K |

Wonderful meal tonight! Tender spare ribs which melt in your mouth. Great Kim chi! Mushrooms were succuant! Service was attentive. Very comparable to the same meal eaten in Japan. Thank you.

An excellent choice with fun and value in Times Square

By dallas_blah |

Where is that elusive fifth star? We must return to find it because we didn't have enough time on our first visit because it was a pre-theater dinner, but we might find it. The question remains whether we'll just go to here for a dinner. Is it worth a subway ride down to Times Square? How pleasant is the experience of cooking your own food? UPDATE: 03/17/2017 - The streak continues: Excellent value, excellent loyalty app, energetic sincere service, and tasty food in reasonable portions. Our bill was 81.50, with a 720-ml bottle of sake for 22.5. BONUS - excellent value TIP - order before 6 PM for Happy Hour (HH) prices UPDATE 12/29/2015 - Gyu Kaku is still a 4-star place. It's an excellent value and continues to be a go-to for pre-theater. TIP - you've got to have reservations for table dining. Here's the deets, and an HH indicates happy hour pricing. Kurosawa 720 ml sake HH, 22.5 HH tuna avocado salad, 7 HH fried shishito peppers, 4 HH addicting cucumber, 3 - we're going to skip this in the future. The cucumbers aren't in the dressing long enough before serving for the flavors to integrate. HH bistro hanger steak, 7 HH chicken breast, basil sauce, 4 HH grilled squid (calamari), 5 HH premium sirloin, 6 - I liked this better than the hanger steak Assorted vegetables, 8 - the corn on the cob was tasty Green tea ice cream, 4 TOTAL - 70.50 Here's the deets for me and the GF (01/29/2015): wakatake onikoroshi sake 300ml, happy hour price, 14.5: just fine, maybe less dry than I'd prefer. Tuna tataki, 9: excellent with sprinkled toasted garlic, I think Fried shishito peppers, 5: remarkably good peppers Sanchu lettuce wrap, 3: A good idea for wrapping those bits of steak and chicken and sauce Chicken breast, happy hour price, double portion, 8 Bistro hanger steak, happy hour price, double portion, 14: steak worth eating Shrimp, 8 Squid, 7 Assorted vegetables, 8: The corn-on-the-cob was nice TOTAL, 95 TIP - good for pre-theater dinner but you should allocate at least 90 minutes from the time you sit down to the time you want to leave - an hour just won't do. TIP - keep in mind that ordering a 300 ml sake bottle is less than half a regular wine bottle, which is 750 ml TIP - practical decor, it's a pleasant but functional space TIP - chicken was our most challenging item to cook BONUS - good value, especially during happy hour for half-price alcohol BONUS - excellent service by a team of people! BONUS - all the food had remarkably good quality SHOUT OUT to Memo for getting our order started

Tasety Food! Great Prices!

By SunSeeker114 |

I simply love this place! Mainly the Times Square location. It can get a little loud each time a guest arrives as the staff announces your arrival. Best of all the food is cheap, it's tasty and it's filling. Plus it has happy hour, even on the weekends!!!! Simply awesome. Favorite: Garlic Chicken Noodles, steamed dumplings & the wings. Favorite Drink: Mango Mai Tai. I use to love the Cheri Blossom but they no longer have it :( They make the best calamari too but dislike the new assortment, but still delish! You can also cook your own dishes :)

Fun place, good food!

By onep39 |

Great food, bustling atmosphere, great for a dinner before or after a show. Always very busy. All dishes were really good and we loved the s'mores at the end!

Food was great

By Shahid B |

The grilled BBQ meats where very tasty and definitely a 5, the only thing is they are not so baby friendly. My baby was sleeping but I was not able to leave him in the stroller because it would have blocked the way. I asked for a baby chair/ high chair but they didn't have that either. I've been to the LA location and Toronto location recently and didn't have this problem.

Amazing meat festival!!!

By Lapinoloco |

A great experience! We had a lot of amazing meat (maybe too much), including wagyu, you cook your meat the way you want, at your own pace, the restaurant is freezing (too much A/C), but with the BBQ in front of you, that's ok. And the price is cheap with the amount and quality of the meat.

Would not have guessed this is a chain restaurant.

By Samantha Morris |

Ducked in here with my 6yo son after a broadway show. Great kid’s meal with salad, rice, dumplings, cook your own meat, fruit juice and smors for dessert. I ordered several cook your own meat plates which were all really well priced due to the late happy hour. Service was fantastic. Staff were helpful. Would gladly come here again.

A HAPPY HOUR EXPERIENCE

By Sue1950 |

We went to Gyu-Kaku after going to see Kinky Boots (which was amazing) and it was Happy Hour which made it very affordable. We chose individual dishes rather than the set menus as it was quite late. All the food was tasty and the barbecue experience was different but fun.

Great Dinner with great service

By Rebecca P |

We arrived without a booking but the hostess was able to seat us with only a few minutes wait. Even though we arrived at an odd time in the mid afternoon the restaurant was still busy and people seemed to be enjoying themselves which is always a good sign. We ordered the Happy Hour special as this was our first time at a Japanese BBQ restaurant and were not sure what we would like. This gave a great selection of meats and veggies to cook all of which were delicious. The staff were really friendly and helpful, explaining how it worked and how long to cook each meat. Overall we both loved it and at about $100 for

Great variety for DIY table cooking, all yummy!

By EscapeRoomPanama |

Awesome korean style bbq but Japanese? Hehe, tried quite a variety of meats and they were great. Happy hour prices are cool and they have two, early and late at night. Prices were reasonable as well.

A Guest on the Table

By Mark B |

First I dont like the fact that we had a 90 min time limit. If u r spending money then how dare you!!!!!! Now I gave the two because the food was good and service was good and the prices were good. What drove the rating down was a guest on my table.A ROACH!!!! Sorry where there is one there are many. All I got was an I am sorry from the manager. At least offer a free drink or dessert but nope. Its fine because even if they did give something I still wont be going back. Thats just disgusting!!!!!

It was what it Was

By cokerbud |

It wasn’t the best on the block when in New York but if one has a hankering for it, it scratches the itch. Visited 10 restaurants in New York and may I say this one would get five stars for less friendly.

Delicious place to go with family

By Lo l |

Comfortable place, we were very well served and well served. They are extremely attentive and the files are well cut and the accompanying are also delicious and well tempered

Family visit with people with allergies

By Jan K |

We were there with the family and it was a great experience. The restaurant looked great and the staff was super friendly and explained everything to us and could also address our allergies. We took a menu for 4 people which was absolutely enough for us 5.

Fantastic!!!!

By BHendsbee |

We came here on a recommendation from a bartender at the local hotel Row NYC. We got the meat lover selection for 2 and it did not disappoint!!!! I highly recommend this restaurant for everyone to try!

Delicious!

By TeamHouston2016 |

This place is wonderful! Everything I ate was so good, and the prices are decent. "Happy Hour" is most of the day & night. There are only a few hours that have higher prices. They offer dishes that are already cooked as well as dishes where you cook your own meat. The service is great, and the staff is very friendly. I went to the bar to wait for my friends, and the bar has good drink prices most of the time. It's very easy to walk away satisfied.

Great food and experience

By The Dancing Hotel Inspector |

A really great way to dine - choose the food you want and cook it yourself over a BBQ set in the table. Guidance given on cooking times. Came with family and had the Shogun menu for six people and some additional dishes. Starters are already cooked and ready to eat, main dishes you cook yourself - good choice of beef, chicken, pork, prawns and vegetables. Desert - toasted marshmallows - this last dish was great fun for the kids. We went to one near Times Square - there are several all over New York

Gyu-Kaku

By Johnny Novo |

The quality of meat here is sending any other all you can eat BBQ spot to the shadow realm, but at $80 a head, it better. This is my big bros favorite restaurant on the planet, so after he won the 2023 World Salsa Summit a celebration was in order. We came in without a res and were told the wait was going to be an hour. I mentioned how I was with the World Salsa Summit champion, but it didn't carry weight with the hostess smh. After an hour and 11 minute wait we were seated, hungrier than a 1932 Mahatma Ghandi. I hang my hat on being an essential team member for an all you can eat BBQ experience, I pull my weight and then some. That doesn't really tie in here but I just wanted to let y'all know I'm a Croatian Warrior. I need to shoutout the Yaki-Shabu as it was literally orgasmic. Well not literally but... yeah. Head and shoulders the best cut of meat The food was fantastic, but the service let me down worse than when the Lakers traded for Russell Westbrook. It felt like our waitress didn't want us to be there lol. We were trying to figure out if we said something or what happened, but sis seemed completely disinterested. At this price point of food I was expecting better service. My big bro might beat me up for only giving 4 stars, so if you don't hear from me after this review is posted you know why. Good food at a great price

By Fabrice R |

Excellent restaurant. We had been to another one from the same chain in Florida, and really enjoyed it, so decided to try this too, and it turned out exactly the same way. Good food, fun to cook, a very decently priced considering the location. Strongly recommended!

Good food and service!

By Nicole M |

Good food! Little pricey but overall good. Great service as well. Conveniently located and fast service. Good selection of food.

Fun

By Limoncelloh |

Everything was very good. We ordered the Fuji menu and were pleased with every part of it. The meats and chicken and shrimp were all nicely marinated. Really enjoyed the bibimbap. It was fun cooking at our own barbecue pit. The service was attentive. Everything about how to cook was explained thoroughly.

Incredible Food & Service!

By Danareid19 |

Our family of 5 enjoyed an amazing meal! 2 adults and 3 kids ordered the Gye-Kaku Premium meal. It says it feeds 2 but it easily fed our family of 5 when we added the Tuna Poke Nachos. These nachos were the thing we’ve eaten since visiting New York!! This place is a must when visiting NYC! Yum!!!

Wonderful happy hour

By turist_from_NYC |

This place was great for pre-theater dinner. They have wonderful happy hour until 6pm and after 9:30pm. All alcohol for half price. A lot of food options (more than two people can handle). ))

Great food

By Meggercat |

We have eaten here in NYC and Honolulu and love it! You cook your own meat on the grill at your table, warm atmosphere and nice variety of appetizers at the bar with lunch specials and drink specials Very difficult to get in after 4:00 pm

Average experience - go if you need something to do mid week.

By Brenda W |

The interactive food experience drew us to eat here. We were not first timers cooking our own dinner - the Chefs choice had nice quality meat and the sides were all good. We ordered the mochi ice cream and disappointed with the flavors. I rated average due to the lackluster ambiance. We asked to move after being seated by the kitchen. Our new window bench seating would have been fine but all the “new member gets $10 off” advertising blocked the view and completely cheapened the experience. This was a birthday celebration dinner and was underwhelmed. Recommend for lunch vs date night.

Mostly yummy, but very hectic

By pocmonster |

As an experience, it's fine. Many would find it exciting to grill meats themselves, but I'm not one of them. I chose it, because it is across the street from the hotel, and we needed to eat before a show. The meats are generally well marinated, although nothing to write home about. And the atmosphere is so super hectic, much like all of Times Square, which is really not something I enjoy.

Flames and fun in the theatre district

By Yvette |

What a swell spot, smack in the middle of Times Square. Great Japanese Barbeque offerings for pre theatre or post. Reasonable prices, delicious food, convivial atmosphere, this is a terrific option that is not a tourist trap! Save room for the Matche tiramisu!!!! An accommodating and friendly staff rounds out a hole in one!

Excellent lunch - food and experience

By codish |

Came in at happy hour - prices somewhat reduced and restaurant not crowded. Great attentive service and explanations and great meat to cook on your own, The premium cuts are worth it! All in all great value. I could have done without the loud greeting the staff seems to be required to create for each new diner.

Good food, terrible service

By nathasmiles |

Went to this restaurant yesterday. Lady who welcomed us was friendly and told us to wait 5-10 mins for our table. A guy took over from her and we ended up waiting much longer for our table. he said staff were on break and the table needs to be cleaned.. mind you half the restaurant was empty... when he took us to our table he wasn't happy and threw the menu card. That was really rude. The food was good, though they forgot to serve our veggies that was in the menu. Asked the waiter for a replay as we were done eating already and we wanted the mochi ice cream as it was the same price. at first he said he will ask our waiter, but came back saying it wasn't available. I knew he was lying. True enough when we had our dessert, we saw them serving that to another customer. Just great. we even said to pay for the mochi ice cream and they still refused... The staff were not attentive and our table was incomplete after waiting for what seemed like 15-20 mins in a half empty restaurant. The waitress wasn't happy when we asked for the dipping bowl like all the other table has. I'd say if you don't mind bad service, go for the food. it's delicious. Or, try a different branch who might have better service. I won't be coming back to this location.

great meat dishes and fun place

By VTwelltravelled |

The meat was by far the highlight -we did get veggies to but really the highlight is the meat. The sake was pretty mediocre but our waiter was good and ambience was great. Fun place to come and cook your own food - we got extra orders of the marinated meat which we thought was the best. not super gourmet but super fun and worth a great evening.

Pleasantly surprised

By orrdin |

I wasnt sure what to expect from this place and i was definitely happy with the end result. We had the Samurai meal for four plus a few extra side dishes and it was definitely a big amount of food. Not all the meet was of equal quality and some disappointed but overall the meat was excellent and we enjoyed the experience and the service.

Cool dinning experience

By On The Road Again |

Across the street from our hotel, this is a cool and different dinning experience. Our teenagers loved it. The food is great and getting to grill it is lots of fun. Also not super expensive considering that we ate all premium meat. Will try their Miami

The WORST quality meat

By ANG |

I've never tasted anything VERY bad quality " meat " in my life today. I wasted my money for $78.00 for the pig food. I did not know even what kind of meat I was eating at all.I think some of the are dog meat or something else. They were not beef for sure. I am a Japanese. I know what the authentic Japanese food is. and I am a gourmet in Japan. I don't understand why this terrible restaurant is aways so busy. I feel like I am going to throw up now.

Cook at your own table grill

By MiTraveler8 |

It's a fun activity to choose meats and veggies and then cook them yourself with your group. Nice variety of options. We chose the meal for 4, which was pricey but gave us a lot of things to try. The duck turned out to be excellent - and I almost didn't try it as I didn't think I'd like it! Bibimbap and fried rice both very good as sides. Several options we asked for as drinks weren't available, and service was a bit in a hurry and just managed what we most needed. But, the grilling kept all of us interested and busy, 9-year-old and teen included, and we had an enjoyable meal.

Great BBQ restaurant

By TATAN |

Great flavourful seasoned beef for bbq. Better than ikinari steak a few streets away! Courteous and attentive staff that adjust your bbq fire consistently.

Miso soup taste soulful

By cee C |

We were lucky to get a seat on a busy Christmas day. We enjoyed our spicy miso ramen. All and all the experience was good. The drinks and the sides were great also.

Interactive and filling meal was delicious

By Valorie O |

Fantastic and speedy meal. Table of three was in and done in an hour for a total of about $100 including tip. We ordered a wide variety of items and a bit more than we could eat. In hindsight, we should have ordered a 3-meat lunch and a two meat lunch for the three of us to share. While the skirt steak was recommended and delicious, the thin cut beef was the standout favorite. Everything was good and there were no klunker dishes. We had garlic shrimp, mushrooms, and rice along with takoyaki, spicy edamame, cheese corn, duck breast and one more steak we cannot remember. Great explanations of how to eat, lots of patience on the side of the servers. Fantastic experience for our last NYC meal.

Unique eating experience at the least

By Rodney C |

This was my first time trying Japanese BBQ and was something the concept of DIY cooking was appealing to me. I went there for lunch with my son who has eaten at a number of different Gyu-Kaku restaurants in the Northeast as he really enjoys the food and the concept. Following his lead, we both had the "Make" your own lunch special where you pick three meats. Our choices were Toro Beef, Bistro Hanger Steak and Yaki Shabu Beef. Of the three cuts, my personal favorite was the Toro Beef, primarily since it was the only cut that was not marinated. I felt the marinated meats were extremely salty which is I'm not a fan of (maybe the other items like the Pork Belly or garlic shrimp have lower sodium content). The Bistro Hanger Steak was the thickest cut of the three allowing you more flexibility to cook it to your liking (i.e. medium rare). Service there was very good and the booth was clean. The waitress even suggested we sign up for the smartphone app since doing so could have possibly resulted in a $10.00 off (your next visit) being awarded that same day to use on this visit (no such luck, I didn't get the $10.00 during our lunch). My son asked what I thought and I shared with him what I wrote above, but added "these days, it's all about the 'experience', and it is a fun experience with your close family or a group of close friends. So if you're looking for an "experience", I would recommend trying Gyu-Kaku. I might even go back to try some of the other menu choices to find the mix of proteins that suits my palate!

Fun place...

By Sahar P |

Cook and eat at the same time on your own table... it's so much fun We had the Fiji one for 2 person which was good enough. Have to make a reservation first specially on weekends. The servers were friendly but the host by the door not professional at all.

Cool experience in a sketchy area

By tms215 |

It is too bad that it is just around the corner from the Port Authority bus terminal. The building is also very dated. If you can get past those 2 things, this is an amazing spot. Cooking all kinds of various foods yourself if fun and delicious. Not expensive for food or drinks. Great for friends or families. Well worth a visit if you are in the area

Flame on Human Torch if you wait for it!!!

By Dan B |

Fresh, flavorful, well prepared and great quantity, with an incredibly responsive staff and frontline almost made up for the 45 minute wait that turned into an hour and a half and then leaving the night before!!! Going at lunch was the A move for service and value but the utility of this fad would be really hard with a group of more than three. Another example of what what lengths we will go to to experience another way to pay a lot, get a little and then convince ourselves it was worth it... So crank up the flame and torch up a marshmallow when you're done... Just don't light your date's hair on fire!!

Wonderful Japanese BBQ

By Exnortherner |

We had lunch at Gyu Kaku Japanese BBQ prior to our Sunday matinee at the Sondheim theater. We had 12pm reservations and were seated immediately upon arrival. Since this was our first visit, our server gave us a full rundown on how the menu worked, including ordering for the grill. Two in our party chose to share a grill order for 2 people. This consisted of soups, salads, dumplings, meats for grilling and dessert. Two in our party ordered Sukiyaki Bibimbap, one vegetarian and one beef. The final entree was Garlic Fried Noodles. We also shared egg soup, Tuna Tataki, Buffalo Spring Rolls and Shrimp Dumplings. We finished up with ice cream and s'mores. The food was absolutely wonderful. There was so much flavor in each item that there was no need to add any additional sauces or dips. The beef, chicken and shrimp was perfectly marinated and grilled up so tender. The service was also exceptionally good although we had to explain that we had a 2 pm curtain call in order to get the check quickly. I normally don't seek out chain restaurants but I can't wait to try other Gyu Kaku locations.

Delicious

Great food, service and price. In Italy difficult to find such a proposal.Adequate proportions, different qualities and sought after.

First Visit, Outstanding!

By David K |

For a Daddy Daughter Trip and dinner before a show, this was an excellent experience and very tasty. The two of us enjoyed the packaged value menu for two people that had a salad, s’mores, veggies and eight different marinated meats. Wow! We ate it all! I would advise planning on at least an hour to enjoy the whole experience (As a matter of fact they will limit the dining experience to an hour and a half.) Since we only had 45 minutes before we needed to get to our show, they also helped us thru the experience and out the door on time. Great staff. Indeed a great experience to remember to do again.

Great self cook bbq

By Toosha Z |

Great self cook bbq. Lovely sharing concept for a group of friends. Nice for dinner however they do some good lunch deals and happy hour. The meat was great and so well marinated and I would defo go again!

Happy Hour

By Mymilesandsmiles |

Nestled in the heart of Times Square (right on 44th street), Guy-Kaku is a popular chain of Japanese Barbeque grill-it-yourself kinda place. With laminated menus, flyers announcing specials and great Happy Hour prices I heard they have over 800 locations in Asia and USA! I’m not a fan of chains but was lured in by their great Happy Hour prices…$6 for a glass of Chardonnay in Times Sq? sign me up! Every table has a gas, smokeless brazier, where you grill your own meat for dipping in a variety of sauces. A la carte menu with a choice of 6 different marinades. The amount of options and choices can be overwhelming. The happy hour menu is more manageable and has the basics. Food – *Spicy Tuna Volcano: very disappointing, not spicy or flavorful at all *Fried Cheese Wonton: decent but also lacks in flavor *Fried Pork Gyoza Dumplings: tasty, far from being the best fried dumpling but tasty and not bad for $6 (during HH) *Garlic (dry) Noodles: exactly what name suggest…some garlic noodles, again nothing to write home about but pretty tasty We sat at the bar, service was friendly but slow/ not attentive for most part of the time. Food was OK, more tasteless than I would have expected. So, if you are in the area and looking for some great deals on food and drinks this is your spot! Or if you are looking for a reasonably priced Japanese BBQ definitely stop by!

A delicious Japanese BBQ Restaurant

By Yasu A |

Gyu-Kaku in Time Square is very popular and crowded. Always make a reservation in advance. We waited about 60 mins on Sunday night during the happy hour. The front desk and wait staffs were so friendly and very accommodating to our baby. I definitely recommend this restaurant.

Dinner out with Family

By Murray S |

Cooking my own food was an unusual experience that at the end of the day was not that great. Even though they replaced the grills 3-4 times food seemed to stick to it. And the prices for the entrees and sides were far to expensive for what you got. Overall I though it was an average exerience and one that I will not try again.

Meat drunk

By Kristin D |

Wow so my niece has been talking about this place forever. We finally got a change to try it out. It was amazing! We got the Kobe meal for 2 and everything was so delicious. Out serves we’re top notch and as ridiculously full as I was. I would have tried to eat more if it was in front of me. A def must go back!

Happiest happy hour!

By Normienorm |

$27.50 pp with $3.5-7 dollar drinks. Anything wrong with that? Nothing at all. Service was excellent. Fast but not pushy. When we were ready for more food it appeared. Same for drinks. Loved it. Looking to go again.

happy hour

By iamAngryBaby |

We ordered happy hour set for 4 people. I like the beef, it is fresh and delicious. All are as expected. The beef is melting in the mouth , which is in the way I like. Other dishes is ok, of course not bad, but just not so impressive. I think it's a good place to meet friends.

Nice Lunch Experience

By b y |

Headed to this venue for a quick lunch before a Broadway Matinee - my partner had a social-packed day so was keen to avoid the Japanese BBQ smells which would potentially have lingered all day had we opted for the conventional BBQ options. We went at 12pm so were eligible for 'Happy Hour' which allows discounted food-drinks. We opted for 2 starters (Calamari, Spicy Sui Mai) and 2 bowls of Ramen (chicken) as well as salad. Along with drinks, this came in at just over $50 which was good value. All good ramen needs to be accompanied by good quality broth and this really hit the spot. Calamari was crisp and perfectly seasoned. Sui Mai was pretty average (stick to chinese Dim Sum restaurants) and the salad went untouched due to the size of portions. This was packed 'to go' Overall - a nice lunch. Whilst we were leaving the restaurant become completely full with ample people waiting for tables in the waiting area - for sure, the sign of a popular venue.

It never disappoints!

By Belle F |

I have been to several restaurants across the USA, and they never disappoint. Food is delicious, love to cook my meat but also have a little bit of privacy. Ambience is cool and upbeat.

Absolute gem of a place.

By Bovills55 |

Introduced to this by the Hell’s Kitchen Food Tour, was so good we went back the following day for dinner. Extremely busy so book in advance. Great fun, good food.. we had noodles, mushrooms, green peppers, and four plates of meat to cook on the bbq between the two of us, perfect amount. Good value for money.

An experience of a life time!

By Kerlyn W |

My Boyfriend and I celebrated one of our most cherished memories here! Danny our server was amazing. We asked lots of questions and he was very patient and helpful throughout the entire night. Keep up the great work. We will definitely be back because of your incredible service. Our meat sampler we chose was amazing. We also thoroughly enjoyed the coco-mo drink was was absolutely incredible.

Fantastic experience, attentive staff, would highly recommend!

By Cindy B |

This was our first visit to Gyu-Kaku and we will be back! The experience was great. We loved the fact that you could cook your own food on the grill provided on your table, and it was a shared experience with the rest of our group. The staff was very attentive, and constantly checked on us. Highly recommend the Egg Soup, and garlic rice. All the meats were fantastic and tender! The only issue we had was the long booths we were in were a bit uncomfortable because there was a ridge that blocked feet room on the inner seat of the booths on both side so the people in our party that got stuck sitting there were a bit uncomfortable.

Delicious!!!

By Juan Ortiz |

Very delicious food! Our server Miriam, was very good with the service. She recommend the meat lover’s an she nailed it ! Also she speaks Spanish.

Weak service

By Lily B |

Fun experience, however the service is not too strong. Each time we come with a reservation, they ask us to sit and wait for our table for 30 minutes. Service is usually very slow.

Sweet toast yourself

By Basset |

Excellent food. Succulent even! But welcome and service to improve. Cold attitude of staff. Toast yourself. A treat

Amazing

By Vanessa P |

This place is amazing! Everyone here is kind, the food is so so so good, excellent quality of the meat and the cake is perfect! The price is reasonable and if you are here for lunch there is drink and happy hour food: a lot of choices most at only 5 dollars! Cocktails are amazing I truly recommend this restaurant

Happy hour visit

By Ross G |

Visited for late lunch and chose meat lovers menu alongside a few individual dishes. Great choice of cuts and sauces left whole family happy. Half price beers and cocktails in happy hour.

NYC Race Weekend

By Sharon F |

I was pleasantly surprised by this place. I have never done this before. They were very accommodating we had a large party of 12. We got right in and the waitress explained everything. The manger stopped by to thank us and see if we needed anything. The kids enjoyed making s’mores at the end. So much fun, it was a real treat👏🏻.

Greg & Kat’s Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ Experience.

By Greg Harris |

The Gyu Kaku Japanese BBQ is an amazing Japanese cuisine style restaurant that offers guests a unique and superb dining experience. In December of 2018, I brought and treated my wife and myself for dinner at Gyu Kaku Japanese BBQ to celebrate our Happy Engagement Anniversary!!! We very much enjoyed our visit at this great restaurant. Both my wife and I were kindly welcomed and treated politely by the restaurant’s staff and we found our meal to be absolutely delicious!!! We highly enjoyed seasoning and cooking our own meals and our table grill did a great job on heating our food!!! Both my wife and I highly recommend for everyone to visit and dine Gyu Kaku!!!

Loved it

By Glenn Corbett |

Great attentive service Em. Ordered ala carte since wife is light eater. Would have preferred all you can eat. Cook your selections at the table. All food varieties we ordered were fantastic. Miso jalapeño sauce is excellent and spicy. Will go again when back in nyc.

was there with a group of ten people who live locally here in NYC

By motherJo |

this is the first time I went to a japanese BBQ place so not knowing what to expect I was pretty impressed with the food and service. The place is on the expensive side. we had steak, chicken, fish and vegetables. the open pit was something to get used to but luckily accross from me was a girl from japan at our table so that was helpful. since we had to cook our own food it took me awhile to make sure it was cooked through. we had snores for dessert whch was nice. the place was a little noisy-happy hour

Awesome Lunch

By Traveller |

My wife, two children, my wife's friend and her daughter and I had lunch here in June 2017. We celebrated the birthday of my wife's friend. A reservation is a must. I had avocado salad, spicy shrimp dumplings and vegetable garlic noodles. The others had a Japanese barbecue set meal which included three different kinds of beef, chicken and shrimp. You cook your food right at the table. The meal is topped off with a smores dessert where you can toast your marshmallow at the table. The service was fantastic. Apart from this lunch, my wife has eaten here many times.

Honestly, you can usually never go wrong with Gyu Kaku. It's Japanese BBQ for a reasonable price, and huge portions. Our group of 5 came in with a Friday reservation for 7 pm for a birthday celebration. We ordered the Yakiniku Party set for 4 people (it was either 4 or 6) and it was more than enough food for us. We even had some leftovers. The set came with a bunch of meats, sides, and some apps (chicken karaage, chicken garlic noodles, spicy tuna volcano). My favorite is always the spicy tuna volcano. I always order this whenever I go. I would prob just be happy eating two plates of this as a meal. We didn't make it in time for happy hour but I like that they also have happy hour pricing on food in addition to the drinks. Although this is the Times Square location, it’s kind of located off to the side street, so you don’t really have to deal with the Times Square crowd too too much. Believe me, I try to avoid Times Square whenever possible, but don’t let that deter you from coming to this location. Happy to be a repeat customer of Gyu Kaku. I've been to various locations, and the quality is pretty consistent across.

Unique experience, cook yourself at your table

By EscapeRoomJunky |

We had a great time. You cook your own food here. Each table has its own small fire in the middle of table. They provide raw marinated meat that you cook yourself. We got one of the samplers. You need to be very hungry or this is too much food. Miso was excellent. I don’t eat red meat so I had chicken and a poke appitizer. S’mores at the end are the best

Great date night

By emily u |

My boyfriend and I came to stay in Times Square from the UK and fancied a fun date night out, not too pricey. This was perfect! Great service and food, they really look after you well and the cooking is so fun. All I will say is that the recommended amount of food is so much! We ordered 2 starters and 3 meat and some rice which was plenty. Would highly recommend for couples date night or family fun evening.

Dinner adjacent to IHG

By Winnie N |

Walked across to the street opposite my hotel (IHG), we saw Gyu-kaku. It’s a known restaurant in my country and has tried before back home. But wanted to give it a try in New York to see if they serve the same food. The menu is different. Waited for about 20 minutes before we were seated. We had BBQ and some dishes. The food tasted good. BBQ portion can be quite small if you order from the ala-carte menu. They have set meals too. Overall experience was good as we went back again a week later.

Not the best of this type of place

By ah64fish |

It was average. I've been to many better places, but a colleague recommended it. It was still a good time due to the company, but I've been to much better.

Delicious and Fun Luncy

By Adrianne A |

Their weekday Party Lunch is delicious and great value. We have been to Gyu-Kaku twice in July. Oncefor lunch and one Saturday for happy hour. Lunch is the better value. Drinks at happy hour very good and good value. We had the same waiter both times and he was excellent.

Best Experience

By sosodom |

My friends with families raved about this place prior to leaving NC. I didn't have high expectations because they said their kids loved it. I love this place. I wish there was one in NC. The food was my favorite in city and we ate well. The atmosphere was casual but I would take business people and a large family crowd here. I cannot say enough good things. Try it - you will not be disappointed! There is a large steak that was part of 2 person meal - was so tender and the marinade was exact. I wish I could recall name for you of dish. The shrimp with basil - unbelievable - I couldn't believe we liked so much. Everything was amazing and I am running out of room for compliments.

Pre-theater treat

By Toreadorable |

Four of us arrived with a 5:45 reservation on a Saturday, prior to an 8:00 curtain at the St. James theater, one block away. Although our meal was large and complex, and the restaurant bustling, we easily made the curtain with time to spare. As Happy Hour ended at 6:00, drinks were half price. It was our first visit here, and we did not know what to expect. We were thrilled with the experience. We shared the prix fixe menu-for-four which consists of a dozen dishes: salads, dumplings, meats and vegetables-to-grill, rices, and table-grilled marshmallow s'mores. Service was professional and super attentive. Dishes were all enjoyed. The meal was fast paced and a bit chaotic, with most dishes arriving near simultaneously. But the well-choreographed chaos was a large part of the fun. We'll definitely be back, a wonderful, wallet-friendly discovery for pre-B'way dining.

Fun environment for families or dates

By Shelly K |

Our Uber driver recommended this place. We loved it. Our 10 yr old niece loved being able to cook her own food. There are vegetarian options. The drinks are very good. They are very attentive . We needed a change from italian and pizza. What a fun dinner.

Two thumbs up!!

By Shihfur |

I rarely say this, but there was nothing to pick on with this place, really. We went there on a Sunday afternoon, the restaurant was probably 60% full, but we still got pretty fast and good services. Our server was great, she paid really close attention to us even though she was pretty busy. We ordered a Fuji for 2 course, everything tasted great and fresh, much better than what I got from their Philadelphia location. Two thumbs up for this location.

Good ramen, ok meat

By Value4Price |

Gyu-Kaku offers ok food in an fast-food style atmosphere. It's ok for it's price, however, nothing one needs to go there.

Incredible experience and quality food!

By Boro1507 |

Lived in Japan and I'm always looking for great places to recreate the experience, and this one is spot on! Just like the yaki-niku places in Japan. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful in getting us the right menu selection, we did the chef's choice, and it was plenty of food. The quality of the meat was very surprising, I didn't expect top quality, it was melt in your mouth delicious! Of course, it could have been the cook (hahaha). Ae was the name of our waiter, he was excellent, and we enjoyed his service. We were a little early for dinner, and there was no problem being seated around 5:30, but by the time we left the place was packed. Be sure to ask to have a little more heat on the grill, Ae turned ours up about halfway through and it made all the difference. Would eat here again!

Amazing good & experience.

By NickJMurray |

Amazing food and experience! We had the meat lovers menu for 2, quality of food was awesome and flavours were on point. Every piece of steak & beef was tender & flavoursome. Sushi and chicken karaage were to die for also. Great fun cooking our own steak/beef and n the table grill and very reasonable price for Manhattan. We would 💯 return again and definitely recommend going here!

Great food and atmosphere in NYC

By Std4SMTNG |

It was sooo good! The food was great and the staff were very friendly. We were celebrating a birthday and they made it very special. It is a little pricey so bring your wallet! But it’s worth it. I would eat there again.

Price high, Quality low and Dirty restaurant

By Nora P |

We found the restaurant very dirty, The ceilings are moldy! The food was average and we waited for a long time!!!! The service was not good. I think you should be getting MUCH better quality food and servings for the price. Gyu-kaku was a disappointment!

A big surprise

By dthcfuller |

Were hesitant to go in as it didn't look much from the outside. Tables were fully booked, so sat at the bar. Big beer mugs, and brilliant cocktails. We ordered a variety of food, everything was fantastic. Can highly recommend.

Most Interactive Eating Experience You can Have

By SINYC718 |

Gyu-Kaku is a place I frequent if you are looking to “break the ice” with your client and new acquaintances. The food is marinated just right, the atmosphere is loud and lively, and the prices are very affordable during their long “happy hours.” Their points system used for frequent visitors makes it very easy to rack up points and get free meals as well. I recommend the steak harami and the spicy beef bim bap- also the steamed shrimp Dumplings- you can thank you later.

No major complaints

By HowlnBubba |

I know the title of this review was kind of lukewarm. I liked this place. The food and atmosphere were very good, and the service was excellent, friendly and attentive. There was nothing to complain about in my chicken garlic noodles or my wife's BBQ. It's just that we've been to Japanese and Korean BBQ's that were equally good. Still, we would gladly return here for a future meal.

A FAN SINCE THE BEGINNING

By Joaquin R |

Since I first tried Gyu Kaku in Tokyo I fell in love with this Japanese bbq chain. Food is always guaranteed to be great. Also the food packages they have, let you try many of the best meats for a good price. Can’t wait to go back!

Delicious meat

By LakridsKaffe |

My greatest tip is to book! The place is super busy, but with a reservation we slipped right past the line and got our table in the back. We ordered a set menu for two and there were plenty of meat, vegetables and rice to keep us going - we could probably have fed a third person if we weren't so hungry. This was our first meal out in New York after landing and it did not disappoint. The meats chosen are delicious, sliced perfectly thin and served with a choice of three dipping sauces. The vegetables chosen are great for grilling, and the side salad had such a nice dressing I had to stop myself not filling up before the main dish. If you haven't done a BBQ before, don't worry - there are instructions in the menu on how long and where on the grill to cook the meat, so you'll do just fine. Service is quick and polite - empty plates are picked up without you almost noticing, and no one is going to bother you asking "is everything ok?" every five minutes. The inside of the restaurant looks really cool, unfortunately we were seated in a pretty private booth in the back so we didn't get to see it all. Still, a very good experience for a very good price. Come during happy hour and get delicious drinks half price!

Incredible food!

By RachBrown18 |

We were recommended this place by a local New Yorker when visiting on our honeymoon. At first they didn’t have any tables as it was close to closing time but the waiting team managed to squeeze us in and we are so glad they did! We had the Meat Lovers bbq (or something like that) and it was so tasty, and SO much food! Beautiful cuts of steak and delicious sides which you cook on the stove in front of you. Waiting staff were very jolly and humoured us (me) when I was terrible with chopsticks. A real treat on our visit to NYC!

Soooo yummy! Go for Happy hour!

By Courtlee86 |

Soooo yummy! Happy hour pricing is unreal. The quality of the meats were delicious and the noodles were so tasty! Make a reservation as it’s a busy spot.

Wow - what a fun place!

By CostaRicaMaryland |

I went here based on the recommendation of a friend. It exceeded all my expectations. The service was great - an anomaly for NYC: pleasant, friendly, funny and helpful. We got the recommended preset dinner for first timers and I highly recommend it. The menu says it's their best seller and I can see why. You get a ton of food but since you cook everything yourself you take your time - talk, eat, talk. Before we knew it, everything was eaten and several hours had gone by. What a pleasurable experience - check it out if you're looking for a great place to go for a fun evening out with friends.

LOVE THIS PLACE

By Delia_Serrano |

I frequent their East Village location which is amazing. great service, great food and great lunch deals. this is a must for all. My 12 year old daughter loves coming here as well whenever she comes to work with me. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

Delicious Soup

By FDinger |

I bought some takeout miso soup for my daughter, who is a big miso fan, and she said it was delicious!

Great fun, great food

By blogarista |

This wasn't my first time eating at a restaurant like Gyu-Kaku where you cook your own food, but it was great fun nonetheless, especially as an activity to do with friends and family. The Kobe beef dishes were particularly good in my opinion, although the pesto chicken was also very nice. My favourite part of the meal was the s'mores that you get to cook at the end of your meal (but maybe I'm just a particularly big fan of s'mores!). Was a perfect lunch to end a busy morning exploring Times Square and NYC, and I imagine it would be just as great for dinner too! Highly recommend for both the food and the experience, especially if you've never had one like this before!

Delicious - arrive before 5 if you want happy hour!!

By EatOutNoGuilt |

We enjoyed an amazing meal prior to seeing Moulin Rouge at the Al Hirschfeld theatre. Gyu-kaku’s menu offers many different options and we enjoyed every bite.

Best Japanese BBQ

By ASALEHK |

One of the best Japanese BBQ restaurants I’ve been too. Everything was great. Food and service both were top. The meat quality and cuts were great too.

Nice date spot!

By RocB2000 |

The food was good, the service was ok. Our waitress forgot to bring our dessert out. Parking available next door

Cook-your-own Japanese meats; just OK

By BenVerona |

Service was great - we had at least 4 people waiting on us - but the food was just OK. The three sauces provided were all similar to each other and bland (the "spicy" was not spicy, for example) and made all of the various meats taste the same. The dining area was very loud so it was hard to talk. A cool idea, but executed only average.

Casual and fun atmosphere

By dands238 |

We liked the food and cooking it ourselves was a fun experience. Conveniently located in the theatre district. Casual atmosphere.

Great Korean BBQ… but…

By Hoffmann5 |

Food was great and the atmosphere here is super nice. My wife and I ordered four different kind of meat and four sides - which was more than enough. BUT - waiters are more interested in getting guests out so that they can seat more people. We felt stressed throughout the whole dinner and our waiters didn’t pay attention but just wanted us to pay and leave… too bad cause the place is great and this type of dinner you want to enjoy relaxed…

Friday Night Dinner

By amberfeehan |

First tip is to make a reservation, sooner than later! We didn't get a chance to make our reservation until the day of, on a Friday night, and the only option we had was 10pm or later. We're from out of town and my husband really wanted to go, so we took it. We went in around 8:00pm to ask if they had a table, and they said the wait would be about an hour and a half - so we just decided to wait for our reservation. Once we got in, we had a good experience! My husband loves this place and it was just as good in NYC as it was when he first tried it in Hawaii. Service was a little slow at times, but overall a good experience.

Excellent Fun & Value

By Jason G |

Lovely restaurant, Plenty of Happy Hour times before and after Broadway shows. Excellent idea and all the dishes were wonderful. The Drinks menu is perfect also

Amazing

By Sunrayxxx |

What a fabulous place! I went with my family on my birthday as I wanted to go somewhere different. Ages ranged from 10 to 71 years in our group and we all had fantastic food and a fun time cooking our meat. The noodles were delicious as was everything else! Can't recommend highly enough.

The worst customer service!

By Vadzim K |

Last Friday 1/17/2020, came with friends to drink cocktails and eat some food, decided to sit down at the bar. We were 4 people and there were no seats, but soon a large company vacated a seat and we took places on the bar. As soon as we sat down, the assistant bartender came up to us and said: get out of here, this is the place for orders. " I was offended and did not understand what was happening! I turned to the bartender, but she also told me that this was the rule, but at the same time they took orders from all sides, to which I drew the attention of the bartender. if this rule, it should work the same for both customers and staff! the bartender grabbed a glass of my drink from my hands and went the other way. I asked the administrator to influence the situation, but she just said “sorry”. I used to go and recommend your restaurant, but I will never be back! This is not the case with customers.

Fun experience, over priced

By Katie |

Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ was a fun experience that wasn’t quite worth the cost. Four of us went for a birthday celebration, and we started out with some cocktails. I had a lychee martini that was decently yummy, but not quite worth $12. We opted for one of the combos that offered a wide variety of meats with some veggies, noodles, and rice for $150. The meat was excellent quality, but there wasn’t anything special about it other than the fact that we cooked it ourselves. The serving size of vegetables, noodles, and rice was also on the small side for such a meat heavy meal. Not to mention, the service was quite slow for bringing out raw meat. I would go back, but I would go during happy hour and order a la cart instead.

Fantastic but pricey

By LVB1973 |

Wanted Japanese and this place was convenient to our hotel. Loved the Japanese BBQ experience, and the meats were fantastic. There were six of us (including 2 kids) and we ordered the BBQ for four plus some additional meats. Four different kinds of beef plus duck, scallops, veggies, two kinds of rice, 3 appetisers and dessert made for a very filling and satisfying meal. Not a quick one as you had to be patient while grilling the meats - we spent nearly two hours for lunch. Keep in mind though that this is not a cheap option so not an everyday place to go...

Fun

By deb m |

I got my restaurants mixed up. This is the place with the grill where you cook your own food, not Obao. You pick your proteins 2 if you do appetizers and rice. 3-4 if you are hungry.

Powder in the eyes

By Guy B |

Very complicated to eat The meat sticks to the grid and to top it all off I was probably sick of the fat cheese fondue

review for the bar

By Melanie T |

I would not recommend sitting by the bar at this location. Two friends and I stopped in to grab a quick drink. It took forever to even order a drink and all of the bartenders behind the bar had a major attitude problem. We all wanted the sake tea cocktail, which my friend verbally ordered, and pointed to on the menu. What we got was just plain tea. When we went to complain, the bartender started arguing that we only ordered tea and couldn't fix our drink, and then we would just have to order a separate thing of sake and pour it in ourselves. Eventually, we paid the difference and she did fix our original drinks, but not before the bartender started arguing with her colleague (yes, in front of all of the customers). I normally love going to Gyu-Kaku, but this experience ruined it for me - at least for this Times Square location.

Awesome dining experience

By Runtoseetheworld |

What a pleasant surprise!! My friend and I shared the grilling meat for 2 and it was delicious! the service was excellent, as were the drinks. Given the whole experience I thought it was good value!

AMAZING!!! 10/10!!!

By KiaraLawson |

Amazing! 10/10!!! Can't recommend this place highly enough! Great food, fantastic service and so much fun! Thank you Kevin, you are a fantastic server!

Amazing family experience!!!

By Chris G |

Take your family. Just do it. Try to go during happy hour for better prices. Regardless though try to make it happen. My family of four (kids 12 and 9) all had such a blast. It's fun, different, and the food is really good. We stumbled across the Philly one a couple days later and the kids were disappointed we couldn't get in. They want me to try opening one in Minneapolis.

Great Atmosphere...Better Food

By russianwharfie |

Happy Hour everyday goes for a couple of hours and the cocktails are great....Bar service may be a bit slow only because they are so busy....Do yourself a favour and have thd bbq.....delicious

Delicious!!!

By Nicole P |

We went for happy hour and the deals and food were delicious. I love being able to try a variety of things and cook them to my liking!!! Will definitely be back!!!

Fun and affordable

By Sydneypoo |

I picked the place for convenience but really enjoyed the food selection and ambiance. This Japanese BBQ allows you to spend a nice evening eating healthy food without breaking the bank which is difficult in New York. I tried the duck and squids and one of the appetizers, went for asparagus as a veggy and ended up filling great since I decided to opt out of the rice dish. That with a pitcher of Japanese beer and you will be able to enjoy yourself in small group.

Great Atmosphere and Excellent food

By mj124161 |

We had a fantastic evening and the atmosphere in the restaurant was fun. The food was delicious and the family loved the interaction with the various dishes. Our experience was amazing and just like so many other positive reviews I read before our visit. The staff were really knowledgable and very helpful. I would highly recommend and look forward to our next visit. Also, good value for money and well worth a visit. Thanks

What a find!

By Andrew R |

Stumbled over this restaurant while looking for restaurants around Time Square and what a find! Such fun for all the family all being able to grill their own meats which were all delicious and followed up with smores (all stolen by the youngest member of the family). Service was a little slow but the restaurant was really busy the whole time we were there so to be expected and a good sign of a decent restaurant.

Book It and Cook It!

By williamdT5357XT |

This restaurant featured grill your own meats and veggies at the table. There were some items that they cooked, e.g. chicken wing pieces but there was a large number of items that you could cook. The menu was quite exceptional with the variety available, including combos where you could have a couple of meats and shrimp. The staff was helpful in explaining everything most of the time. We went once at lunch and a couple of days later for dinner. The lunch time service was better than dinner but it was also busier at dinner. I had a had salad and an appetizer called chili beef which was quite tasty. I did not need to cook it because it was roasted beef but I liked it more done and hot. My wife shared some noodles with me that she had ordered. They were good. She loved her calamari and shrimp. At dinner though, when I ordered the fried banana cheesecake dessert, it was so long in coming that I wanted to cancel but it came about a minute later. BTW, it was delicious!

Woweeee

By Ropy H |

This place was unbelievably delicious we had the Kobe special was so much food but so good will definitely be back if we are ever in New York again

A really impressive chain-great food and great service

By SavesSpiders |

I’ve been here before and I’m never disappointed. I really don’t care for chain restaurants, but this is the exception to the rule. The food is yummy-with a diverse selection, the servers are friendly, and the atmosphere encourages conversation. It’s a good place to go if you don’t have a lot to talk about with your dinner companions lol. They have gluten free options too!

Bad service from grumpy waiter

By Did142014 |

Really good food, bad service. Ordered various meats and veg to cook at the table… but because it wasn’t what the waiter wanted us to buy he had a strop. Unbelievable. Never seen it before.

Fabulous

By Heather M |

Meal was fabulous. Service was great. Will be returning before heading back to the UK. Best meal of the week....by far.

What an unexpected treat

By Karen C |

My first time having Japanese bbq - it was 8 mins from my Hyatt center which is so close to Times Square - the only thing you ought to know and be aware of it that it’s always so busy, waiting time is one hour - so make your reservations !!!! We got in at 10pm Saturday night and I was thoroughly impressed with how everything tasted ! Well done guys ! Ps the banana cheesecake ice cream is awesome !

Japanese BBQ

By Kosmo52 |

Loved this restaurant! Went with family and had so much fun cooking our meal. We had a wide variety of meats and seafood and they were all amazing! Great rice dishes and the asparagus is a must have! Can't wait to visit the city and come back here!

Always fun and delicious

By beckyberry822 |

Been here many times and always a great experience! Atmosphere is fun and service is great! Food is amazing! You actually cook your own food on the grill in the middle of the table. The meats are fresh and delicious! The appetizers never let you down and make sure you leave room for dessert! Reasonably priced for a NYC Times Square location. Happy Hour is daily! Try it out! You won’t be disappointed!

Nice food, bit loud

By Sarah Jayne G |

Found this place round the corner from our hotel. It is a do it yourself BBQ restaurant. Booked online which they struggled to find as we arrived. Finally seated, very helpful server whom advised us to take the set menu for $70. There was still a good choice of meats with the set menu and we really enjoyed the process and all the sauces. Do make sure to turn up the heat or you will be there a while! It was very loud in there so not a place for a romantic meal but really enjoyable nonetheless. Wine not too expensive and good Overall good evening just a little overpriced but it's NYC!

Best chain yakiniku in town

By Yutthapong W |

Best chain yakiniku in town, lots of options of beef, pork, chicken, seafood and also lots of appetizer . Tuna Bite was really good while calamari was just soso, visit there before 6 PM to get promotion of happy hour, a duraeble place to visit to have a nice yakiniku and hang out with friends

Expensive but amazing food!

By Leah M |

This was such a great night out with friends. Food is excellent. Atmosphere is fun. Prices are high- go before 6:00pm for happy hour prices which really help. We did a 4 person group deal for $120. Delicious meats and sauces, soup, salad, appetizer, and s'more desserts. Highly recommend!

Good atmosphere, Great food

By Briana B |

This was a great experience and the food was good too. My husband and I ordered one of the large meals to taste all different meats and it was worth the price. Your best will need to cook a little longer than the waiter's suggested times. We did that and it was not as tough as it es when we used the suggested times. Overall we had fun and got fat full!

A little of this, a little of that but all very good and Healthy too

By Ceez787 |

You can never go wrong in this type of restaurant because whether your preference is fish, meat, poultry or vegetables they have it all and you prepare it as you like and use whatever condiments or sauces you prefer, You can also cook and eat at your own pace rather than the chef/kitchen determining the sequence of events for you. Everything is fresh and the prices are extremely reasonable for all of the food you get. We got one of the basic plates and we still had left overs. Our server made suggestions to us based on our likes and they were spot on, thank you Nutcha. The food was great, the service was excellent and it was an overall very fun, satisfying and economical experience.Your server will coat the grill with BBQ sauce and sometime during your experience they will recoat it once again to insure that whatever your cooking retains that BBQ flavor.

Fun place!!

By Trip@dvisor Review Master |

What a great place to visit!! Fun music, nice izakaya/bar comfort food type menu with friendly service and reasonable drinks. So far my favorite Japanese meal around Times Square!

Wonderful experience, tasty food, great service!

By colleenva |

Our family thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience! This was our first time at a BBQ restaurant and it definitely won’t be our last! Highly recommend!

Surprise!!

By Pat M |

We found this spot close to Times Square. Very Close. We sat at the bar and had great happy hour prices at 10 pm on a Saturday night?? Not your normal happy hour! We had Bimimbap and Braised ribs. Both were very good. Nice staff and well run.

Nice concept

By Steve Lewis |

The formula is very simple. A fire place is located in the middle of the table and you can grill marinated meat yourself. There are different formulas: a la carte or bundled. Portions are very generous and you won’t have an empty stomach. Pricing is slightly more expensive that stated on many comments. It is around $40 per head with no dessert and soft drinks

Great food

By Hanne S |

Best Korean BBQ we have tried so far. Tender beef, tasty sauces and the different cabbages were all great. Long wait (1,5 hrs) on a Saturday and not an option to book in advance. Mango Mojitos to recommend! Will come for happy hour next time!

Overpriced so shop the menu carefully

By DGStravels |

Went for a pre-show dinner on the advice of our son. Wanted something reasonable, which this was not. He suggested the $150 dinner for 4. We had 5, but had some light eaters. The grill was not turned up hot enough and that took longer to cook things. For some reason the scallops were frozen when they arrived at the table and took much longer to cook. For the amount of food that we got, I did not think this was worth the price. While the smores were neat for some, I would not call a desert item that is in line with the prices. If you have to try the Korean BBQ ccok at your table, I suggest getting some small dishes and maybe 1 or 2 proteins to cook on the grill. You will have some money left for drinks or a real desert.

Fun for the Family

By K5756GNcatheriner |

We had dinner here after a matinee. Had kids between 7 and 16, plus adults. We got the Shogun sampler and it was more than enough food for the 7 of us. The kids LOVED grilling their own food. We enjoyed trying all the different meats and each had our favorites. The S'mores for desert were so much fun. The staff were very attentive, despite the fact that we were there on a busy saturday night. They made sure the temperature on our grill was good and cleaned it a number ot times. The kids had so much fun that they can't wait to go back again. This is a great option if you're looking for something a little different in Times Square.

Excellent barbecue dinner

By Barun C |

We had a very nice and fun dinner here, this was their fixed price special for 3 people where they keep on bringing you stuff, you barbecue the different meats yourself, we liked everything, but particularly good were the thinly sliced pork and beef and the big shrimps. The cocktails were not great but they have nice Japanese beers.

Unique dining experience near Times Square

By TNMoniz |

If you like an interactive dining experience this will not disappoint. Japanese BBQ with loads of options to satisfy even the pickiest eater. Drinks were ok but the food was very good. If you want to try something special get the A5 Wagyu.

Loved it so much we ate here twice when visiting NYC!

By LookingForFamilyFun |

We enjoyed the food here so much we ate here twice! It was easy to get a reservation, we loved the variety and the unique approach to dinner. Service was friendly, helpful, and efficient. Price was good for what you got in NYC! So glad to find out we have one back home...

Great Atmosphere and great food

By Bajan_Mum83 |

Ignore the crowds at the bar (they have a popular happy hour). Great dinner after the theatre. Loved the grill (kept me warm and allowed me to cook the meat to my preference) the sides were just the right portions. Would recommend it to any/everyone in a heartbeat,

Fabulous

By Turtle5954 |

Really enjoyable japanese bbq meal - lovely decor and table, friendly and efficient staff and pretty good value too. Popular so book ahead.

Great fun and great food 😃👍

By WorldRoadtrip |

This was the first time we have visited a bbq restaurant and it didn’t disappoint. The server was extremely helpful in navigating us through the menu. The table has a bbq in the middle so fresh meat (depending on your menu choice) is brought to your table for you to cook at your leisure. Recommend visiting at happy hour as the drinks are nearly half price.

Tasty

By Elena B |

I loved it so much. We ordered appetizers and meat and I enjoyed all the food. Highly recommend for lunch or dinner

Concept is fun but food was average

By Trent C |

My daughter and I went and were really excited about the concept of grilling on the table (which was fun). The meat was disappointing - fatty and not cut very well so it was hard to navigate with only tongues, chopsticks, and the one fork I requested. Flavor of the meat wasn’t great either. Spring rolls, salad, and spicy cucumbers were good.

Happy hour!!

Services was good, food is amazing I would recommend Toro beef, pork belly and garlic rice. I love it

We ate meat to put on the brazier, with zucchini and small green peppers, all great and very convivial this grill thing at the Center. Bowl of delicious rice! We recommend

Meat Feast

Massive plates of meat, huge mugs of beer & a flaming grill... what more could a man ask for??? Authentic Japanese BBQ with American sized portions. It's a must visit for anyone looking for top quality Asian cuisine. They even have an app to make reservations & collect loyalty points. The cocktail selection is great too with Happy Hour is 3-6 1/2 price beer & cocktails!!

Cool idea but the reality needs updating

Read some reviews which raved about this chain restaurant, and since my grandkids love hibachi restaurants we decided to give it a try. Made a reservation, which was honored on time. Sat down to a table that had been quickly but not thoroughly cleaned - three sauce bottles all needed a good wiping, as well as the table. The grill itself went out a couple of times and we had to get the server to restart. You’d think in a restaurant where guests are cooking chicken, pork or shrimp the management would guarantee that the grills worked in optimal capacity. Overall impression was of a restaurant that needed a good cleaning and refurbishment. Must have been great when it was new.

High quality meat

By Catalaq |

This is a wonderful Japanese grill with very high quality meats. The restaurant was busy but very clean. Prices ran mid to high level. There was a wait even though we had reservations. The staff was underrepresented and short handed but they tried hard. Still service was not the best. The food was great though.

Awesome experience!

Decided to try this restaurant for mother's day lunch with my kids and a friend and her daughter. I made reservations ahead of time and was pretty glad I did as it was pretty busy. Not sure if seats were available without a reservation. The concept of this restaurant is that you cook your own meats on a grill in the center of the table. Some of the meats are marinated, some are not. All of the meats are pre cut into bite sized pieces. The choices range from steaks to prime ribs to chicken, duck, pork and seafood. Lots and lots of options. You can chose from soups, Rice's, noodles and salads to go as a side. There's a full drink menu with a wide selection of cocktails. My kids are 12 and 10 and they enjoyed cooking and eating their food. Everything was delicious! It was different and fun to do and the price was reasonable. You won't regret eating here!

Ate here for dinner

By Megan G |

Dinner here was our first Japanese BBQ experience. The restaurant is somewhat small so I recommend making a reservation. The food was amazing! If you are new to this experience I recommend ordering one of the BBQ courses. We got the Gyu-Kaku Premium which was a nice mix of meats and vegetables. The waiters will also help you cook some of the meats if you need help. I saw couples and groups of friends eating there so it's an atmosphere for everyone. We will eat there again next time we're in the city!

Went on a food tour while in the city. The first stop was here and it was great. Pleasant atmosphere & delicious food!

Not what you would normally expect in TImes Square Area!

I realize that much has been done to upgrade this area, but I was still surprised at our dining experience here. It's a loud and lively place, the food is quite good and both the meals and drinks are moderately priced. We went here before going to see Springsteen on Broadway.

Best restaurant I've been to in New York

By Higor Martins |

I’ve been in the United States since December 15th and I’ve been tired of being fooled in other restaurants. And today, on my last day of travel, a coincidence I came to this restaurant, with very little expectations, however, I was positively surprised. It was the best food in New York, lots of food and everything very tasty. I'll tell everyone. Excellent cost-benefit.

Great value for money

Overall a very busy place and even with a reservation we needed to wait 15 minutes for our table to be ready. I had read some reviews that the portion sizes are really large so we ordered the meal for 2 even though we were 3 people which was the right decision as we had food left over. The cooking of your own food is not usually something I would go for since I go out to avoid cooking, however the setup with the grill, preparation of the grill items made it very enjoyable.

Good experience

This is the first time I tried this type of cuisine. We went to the one near Time Square, without a reservation at 530pm. They could give us a table on the condition that we finished before 7:30pm. Sounded good. During happy hours (ends at 6pm), there were discounted beer, and food. When the servers brought out the various meat, they would tell you how long to cook each type of meat. Food was good. It was a fun and enjoyable experience.

So good that we plan travel around their locations!

Happened upon this gem while wandering around NYC. Could not have asked for better food or service for our dinner that night! Large choice of food that you get to cook at your table.

Oh so ordinary

Food was good but very overpriced. Very noisy. Sloppy service. Could have been in coles cafeteria in the 70's (aussies will understand this reference).

Good food, fun cooking at the table

By Tim C |

We had lunch a Gyu-Kaku with friends when we were visiting New York. There were five of us and we ordered the lunch special for four, plus an extra plate of chicken. While I am not big on Asian food in general, I thought the food was very good. It included soup and salad, and then plates of steak and chicken plus vegetables that you cook yourself on a hibachi grill in the middle of the table. For dessert we had somemores....fun! Lots of fun and the meats were all very flavorful. Service was good and attentive.

Uncomfortable end to the evening as floors and trash cleared up around us whilst still dining

By Rod H |

Very poor service as restaurant starting cleaning up around us at 10pm, mopping floors and clearing our table into washing up bowls and large trash containers. We were not advised at 830pm arrival that the restaurant closed at 10pm and given this is a cook your own BBQ experience 90 mins is not enough time the staff seemed hostile to us at the end ans seemed surprised when I did not tip. Food also average. Very thin strips of meat like bacon.

Prepared foods are the best

By Asish P |

The ambiance reminded us of being in Japan - from the way they greeted you, to the dining room, and service. We ordered some apps and also some items to grill. The bbq portion of the food was ok, and not sure i would order it again. However the prepared food was really good. I specially enjoyed the salmon app (Hot oil seared salmon), along with the potstickers, as well as the spicy tuna tacos. The Tuna Poke was good, but lacked a little kick/flavour. The location is also great, within walking distance to times square, and all of the shows in the area. Worth a try, if you are in the area.

Fun Reasonably Priced Pre-Theatre near Times Square

By Douglas T |

This is one of a chain and this is the best one we have been to. The service is teamed and works well. Good pre-theatre that has good food and does not cost an arm and a leg. Hard to say it is excellent in any respect, but the cook it yourself approach and the high level of decent food and mix makes this a good value. We had a large pitcher of beer on special for $10 and one of the fixed meals for two which had more food than we could eat and a very good variety.

Yummy bbq!

Delicious food and friendly staff. Our server did forget one of our orders and unfortunately it took a long time for it to come out so that was the only downside. Apart from that would definitely go back!
