Excellent food and service

By RaraRaisin |

We went for diner during the week. The food was excellent, very authentic and reasonably priced. We had sushi and some of the seasonal dishes. It was no problem to replace the yellowtail on the sashimi platter with something else (since I don't like it that much). The black sesame ice cream for dessert was definitely a highlight. Service was very friendly and attentive.

great food

By annakawatson |

This is the best hotpot in town. If I could, I would eat here every day. I recommend getting Hakata Tonton hotpot, it was just amazing. And don't forget to try the black sesame ice cream. It is something you will not find in many places.

The best Japanese pork hot pot in NYC

By Jerry C |

Hakata Ton Ton is tiny and always full. Reservations a week or more in advance are a must a dinner and walk-ins are rare. The Kyushu Japanese style food is simple and earthy, and the food at Hakata Ton Ton is based on the regional cooking of Hakata, Japan. That means pork!. Even the restaurant's logo is a drawing of a cute pig snout. Make sure you order the Shabu Shabu or Hakata hot pot with pork collagen broth. That doesn't sound appetizing, but it's better than saying pigs feet soup. Sashimi appetizers are excellent. Also try the grilled pork belly skewer appetizer. You will not regret it. Tastier than bacon! You'll leave with a full, warm tummy. And want to return ASAP. I have many, many times.

lobster fried rice was great, pig's foot was not crispy enough.

Only for japanese cuisine lovers

By RohitPatodia |

We had happened to go this place after office party and it offers some of the interesting dishes and varities in sushi. They have hot pot too. Overall the group had a mixed review about their dishes like for me I probably have had a lot better sushi than i had that night so....

Great flavors!

By AroundTheWorld8080 |

We made a reservation online with Open Table a month in advance. And we highly recommend that you do the same. The dining area is modern yet cozy ( only eight or nine tables of 4 + a bar that seats 6 ). Our reservation was for 6pm and we showed up at 5;40pm. If you are dining during the winter, I highly recommend that you make an early time because the tables facing the entrance get cold blasts of air every so often. Hot pot with pork belly, chicken, and dumplings was great. Flavor wonderful. The majority of the diners were young Asian professionals -- very very popular.

Great Spot for Authentic Japanese

By Robert B |

Great spot for authentic Japanese food and ambiance. The newer side on Christopher is more charming so if you can get a table there instead of the more cramped Grove St side. Don't go for sushi and be adventurous. They also have a great selection of sake

Very interesting, very good

By ChefGeorge |

We enjoyed being the only non-Asians in the place for nearly our entire meal - a good sign of authenticity. The menu is confusing, but "Tonsuku" means pigs feet, and many but not all dishes contain some in one form or another. Nearly every table ordered a hot pot, which has to be shared by at least 2 people, for which they place a propane burner on your table. The cooking vessel arrives heaped 6-8" above the rim with raw ingredients, which cook down over 15-20 min, during which you can enjoy a variety of small plate apps. I tried monkfish liver, which was great, as were the gyoza dumplings. I tried the grilled tonsuko, which while tasty, was a big mess of small bones, lots of mushy tender collagen, and precious few morsels of meat, but that's what they are! My wife's Ebimayo (shrimp with mayo) may be the best fried shrimp ever. Next time we'll do a hot pot, as they really looked & smelled great. Pass on the Summer Rice Cake, which is like a soft pre-packaged gummy bear, and the strawberry ice cream wasn't anything special. The cute Porkslap Beer seemed to be straightforward pale ale made by a regional brewery. And while they may not have allowed tipping recently, they encourage it now.

Addictive hot pots! Da i suki desu!

By Sue R |

This little authentic Japanese gem has become a regular for my husband and me. He has been working in Japan for several years and says everything about Hakata Tonton is true Japanese, including the very friendly staff. Even though the hot pots are very filling, besides being healthful, I leave craving more! The menu has so many different items, so next time I'm going to force myself to get something different. Make sure to make reservations, since space is very limited.

Always wonderful! Totemo oishii!

By Sue R |

My husband and I haven’t been here in quite a while and we were having a craving for hot pot, and this is the place for that. Keiko and Tatsuki were our servers. We had a really good time with them, and also with the Japanese diners sitting next to us. We always get the Hakata hot pot, but this time we also got the marinated salmon carpaccio with avocado paste appetizer. It was outstanding! We couldn’t finish the hot pot, so we took home the leftovers with added noodles. I also had the Yuzu sparkling jelly sake, which is very interesting and delicious. It’s always worth the trip into NYC for Hakata Tonton.

A truly japanese environment

By hector84 |

It is definitely worth it! Like a trip to Japan from a tiny and warm restaurant in midtown. We just landed up there cause the place looked like a real japanese and for sure it is!!

Great Food!

By Lauren K |

The food is great! Authentic asian cuisine. We loved everything we tried. I especially loved the mayo ebi shrimp, out of this world. Friendly staff, medium priced.

Authentic and intimate

By gfrank11 |

We were the ONLY people of non-Japanese origin during our entire meal here. That was just one of the many examples of authenticity! I came here with my kids and we just loved it. So delicious, every dish beautifully prepared and fresh. My favorite was the Salmon Carpaccio with avocado sauce and wasabi leaves. My second favorite was the seaweed salad starter. Such delicate, well balanced flavors. I found the pricing also to be reasonable, especially for the West Village.

Great Food, Great Service!

By WorkHardPlayHard2008 |

After reading so many good reviews, I decided to give this little restaurant a try. I know that it serves regional food, unlike those sushi restaurants. This is a small Japanese restaurant located in West Village. There is Big Gay Ice-cream next door. You should make reservation. Like other reviewers mentioned, you may need to reserve at least 2 weeks in advance. This is a restaurant specialize in Pig. Therefore you will find most of the dishes from the menu are pigs. The waiters are very friendly. I love their service. They will explain the menu to you patiently. 2 of us, we ordered Pork Belly with Spicy Garlic Sauce; Hakata Tonton Hotpot; 2 cold beers; dessert: Creme Brulee with Black Sesame Ice-cream. We really have a great meal. And it was $34 each. I highly recommend this restaurant to whoever loves Asian food. It may not be the best you experience but you will not be disappointed for sure.

Real Authentic Japanese in NYC

By N Li |

I've been here a few times now and thought I'd finally write a review. This place is really great. It feels like you are in a real Japanese establishment in Japan. The Motsu-nabe is fatanstic, as good as it gets I think in the U.S. They also have other nabe options if you aren't interested in motsu (hormone meat), such as a pork hot pot. Service is fantastic, the inside is really nice, really great atmosphere, make sure you make a reservation, they re pretty packed on the weekends, and very reasonably priced. If you really want to get a real authentic Japanese feast in New York, you can't go wrong with tonton

Food that's good for your skin

By mikitruax |

We came here for a friend's birthday and ordered the set menu. We were all surprised at the large protions of the appetizers. And they're special. Not the usual Japanese appetizers you see at every Japanese restaurant so it was a nice change. The motsu-nabe was SO GOOD! Rich but not heavy, and the tonton hot pot which features the collagen broth really seemed to work its magic. Or maybe it was just our imagination, but we'd like to think it made our skin appear a little smoother the next day. Overall it was a very filling meal.

Still wonderful!!

By Sue R |

My husband and I hadn't been to Hakata Tonton in a while and had the craving again for hot pot. We were so pleasantly surprised that Nodoka remembered us! Michael and Chris were great. I tried something new this time--yuzu-flavored sparkling jelly sake. It was really cool! Had a different texture. And of course we had the Hakata Tonton hot pot--so good. I hope it won't be so long until the next time we come. Don't forget to make reservations--it's a very small but wonderful restaurant.

I love their Motsu Nabe...

I love their Motsu Nabe now! sooo good! real Japanese Motsu Nabe!

To escape from sushis

By deuxvies |

Definitely not a high standard place regarding tables and chairs, but a very good one for Japanese food. The hot pot with pork and chicken was tasty, We took also a carpaccio of tuna and some other small things to eat. It was very god at a reasonable price. The service is good and friendly. Our daughter who selected this restaurant booked it one month ahead

great japanese home cooking

By Molinoc |

great small restaurant offering authentic home style food in a cozy and warm room. We had some fantastic entree and then a huge hotpot with all kind of interesting veggies and meats. The service was great and we loved the way they propose their menu. A special kindness not so often found in NYC. We'll come back as soon as possible but most of all as soon as they have another free table...probably the hardest thing to find.

Good Tonsoku (pigs feet) food restaurant with interesting menu.

Not your traditional westernized Japanese restaurant

By GerryBaron06 |

My boss picked this restaurant. He thought it would be a traditional sushi restaurant. It was not. In fact, there was no sushi or sashimi on the menu. With the exception of the siu mai, everything I had was brand new and nothing that I have seen on the menu of any other Japanese menu. We tried the Kani Harabuki (Blend of snow crab, pork, mushroom and vegetables. Served with spring roll skin) which I likened to a Japanese taco because of its presentation. It was extremely tasty. For the main dish, we had the Ebi Chili (Shrimp drenched in sweet chili sauce over an egg omelette). Everything tasted good. I suppose that this was the most authentic, non-westernized Japanese experience that I have ever had.

Fun, tasty and a must go!! The best of Japan in the heart of the West Village!

By carpediem2019 |

Terrific evening at Hakata TonTon. Be prepared for a fest of pig feet, friends, TonTon's specialty. The dish comes with cabbage, pig feet galore and, surprise of surprises, goji berries! I was truly surprised with the combination of flavors and the presentation of the meal (all ingredients are freshly cooked in front of you). The restaurant is very popular and be prepared for a wait if you walk in. Not a problem, you can go over and have a drink or stroll around in the neighborhood. I fully recommend Hakata Tonton and look forward to go back many more times.

Absolutely amazing

Stumbled upon Hakata TonTon yesterday by accident and we are so happy we did! This was one of the best dining experiences I have had in a while. Would definitely recommend l.

tonsuku stew

By s3jwang |

Fantastic place! tonsuku stew was phenomenal as was the grilled tonsuku and the tuna salad. Decor is very simple, but service was outstanding. Not sure I'd recommend this place for a romantic date, but definitely a place for a reasonably priced delicious homestyle japanese meal.

Authentic Japanese food with Hakata flavor such as motsu nabe, tonsoku and mentaiko. Excellent food and good service...

Authentic Japanese food with Hakata flavor such as motsu nabe, tonsoku and mentaiko. Excellent food and good service. Very croweded and the space is a little packed. Good only for casual dinnder with your friends. Nevertheless, good food.

Omg ! The best food I had in New York !

By Mishasingh |

It's such a tiny warm place, with very good service and a real hi tech loo ! The food was awesome, but you must get a reservation done, don't just land up, we waited till mid nite for our turn and it was worth it!! This place gets my thumbs up, a must go to restaurant while ur in New York.

Delicious!

By Berries202 |

The table cooked Japanese hot pot was wonderful. The Tonsoku was tender and juicy. Love it. I will definitely be back for more.

So Yummy!!!

By Charles R |

This restaurant serves so many unusual Japanese dishes that are definitely not the standard fare. Go with a larger group of 4 or more so that you can order as many dishes as possible to sample. Everything tastes unique and will blow you away.

An absolute fabulous deal for Japanese food in New York

By drl_smit-may |

We have dined at this restaurant five times. It is always crowded and sometimes we have to wait a half an hour for a table. The wait is well worth it. The food is always fabulous. The service is at least very good and sometimes excellent. The prices are amazingly cheap for the quality and quantity. The head chef is very flexible and will even do tasting menus and cook special dishes with advance notice. The pigs feet dishes are the best in New York. The hot pots are amazing. When visiting New York don't leave without going to this restaurant.

Still one of the best Japanese restaurants

By WorkHardPlayHard2008 |

2nd time here couple nights ago with cold weather. This time, I found out that they have expanded the restaurant. Therefore, it's easier to make reservation. Always love their Hotpot, Services and Dessert. Oh! And the Green Tea Tofu for dessert is a must try! Always make reservation.

A fabulous experience of japanese food

By PepsPrague |

Very well located in the lively area of West village, this small but cosy japanese restaurant is a real treasure. We were welcomed by very nice waiters. The other clients were mainly japanese which is a great guarantee ! The decoration is simple but nice and creates a great atmosphere. The food was delicious, all ingredient very fresh and tasty. From slamon carpaccio and sushi to hot plates, you will taste real and excellent japanese food. And to make it even nicer, prices are really reasonnable! I can only recomment to go there (but don't forget to book your table).

Changes....

By Sue R |

My husband and I had dinner here, after not having been for over a year. We both had a craving for their hot pot, which was always absolutely wonderful. Some things have changed since the last time we were here. First of all, they are now part of a website to make, change, or cancel your reservations, which was very good. They’ve updated the tabletop stove from one with a flame to a higher-tech induction stove and they’ve redecorated the walls. As for the hot pot, on all of our previous visits over the years, the noodles (which are my favorite part of the hot pot) were included in the hot pot...lots of them. And if you had a lot of the very flavorful broth left after you ate most of the contents (pork, cabbage, greens, noodles), you could order more noodles (or rice) for an extra charge. This time, you had to wait until you finished about half of the greens and pork before they’d add the noodles...and not as many noodles as before. Of course, the whole thing was very good, but not as absolutely wonderfully spicy and tasty as in the past. I got the impression that there’s a new chef. The one shining dish was the avocado salmon sashimi. Outstanding! After dinner, we chatted with Tatsuki for a bit. He’s very nice, as were all of the other servers.

Uniquely authentic

By Exploricon |

I finally went to Hakata TonTon and loved it! Their specialty is Japanese pork dishes - including weird things like pigs feet. The night I was there everyone was enjoying a very decadent looking sukiyaki type dish, with green onion piled high over meats. It was part of the tasting menu, which was very reasonably priced. We instead at sushi and sashimi, which are on the menu as well. The quality of the sashimi was excellent. We also had the spicy shrimp roll, which was delicious. Things are all a little different there it seems. We had miso soup, but with spinach – it was incredible. Also, a soft shell crab appetizer and of course, sake. In general everything we tried was excellent and the service was great too. It ended up costing about $60 per person, and we ate and drank well. I will definitely be back. MAKE RESERVATIONS: the restaurant is tiny. We got lucky and were able to sit, but people behind us had to wait. Make reservations especially on the weekend.

Outstanding

By UK Traveler |

Original and very cool place to eat. Excellent quality ingredients and service is top notch. appreciated that my order was taken quickly as I was in a rush.

Delightful, delicious and deceiving!!

By TazTraveller_13 |

This unassuming little Japanese restaurant is a seriously great find in the West Village of New Yorks Greenwich Village! They have a terrific range of the usual Japanese fare but their specialty is Japanese "hot-pots". We did not have time for one of these but they looked wonderful and if we are able to return we would certainly try one of these!! The sushi was delicious, the "hot dishes" we had were really flavoursome. If near the West Village put this on your list of must dos - if you love Japanese food try to get here even if you aren't in the West Village!! Making a booking is a good idea as this place is popular (especiall with the local Japanese population).

Hard to reserve but you can save a table for two if you go before 6pm and wait.

By tmxnyc |

I keep coming back to this place. The food is the best and even better thing is, so cheap! Love "motsunabe shiro"especially the noodle in the end... The best of best noodle of the city, it can beat Ippudo or Momofuku noodles! (I always asks them to make a noodle restaurant!) I love liver sashimi too, it's so fresh and tastes like heaven. I used to love pickles here, but it tastes not that great as it did now. Hard to make reservation & too many seats for this small place, but once you eat food here, it doesn't matter. So good!

Disappointed

By Senyum |

After all the hype we managed to get a reservation here. Signature pigs feet was a bit smelly and gamey, Hotpot was great but not much meat with some random pig parts, foie gras sushi was the size of a 5 cent coin sitting on a bed of tofu rice

I will return for more

By superbugs |

a japanese Sukiyaki type of serving (cook on table). Main food type is pig including pig feet. it has a great gelatin texture. love it. affortable and comforting. Tips: go before 7pm to get seated.

Service was lacking as the food wasn't that great

By Melanie T |

I love hot pot and was really looking forward to trying Hakata Tonton. Unfortunately, it was a pretty disappointing experience. A few of us (out of our party of four) got there earlier than our intended meeting time. Not only do they not seat you before your entire party arrives - they don't even let you put your name down on the waiting list, like it's some kind of e.xclusive club or something. That being said, make sure you reserve ahead of time (which I only found them on Open Table on the day of, so it was too late to reserve by then). We ordered a few items to share: Tonton Famous Homemade Gyoza - definitely not worth the $12 for 6 pieces. I can definitely get better dumplings at 5 for a $1 at one of those hole in the wall places in Chinatown, or even at an Asian supermarket. Grilled pork tonsoku with mentaiko and bonito soupy sauce - this was okay. I enjoyed the mentaiko. Hakata Motsu hotpot (with beef intestine, chives, cabbage) - this was SO oily. I couldn't even enjoy the broth because most of it was laced with fat. It also wasn't filling. Egg omelette with pork tonsoku and scallion - very basic. The pork tastes like leftover pork. Again, not worth $12 because I can definitely make a better omelette at home. Service started out fine - they got us menus, took our orders, and our food came out fairly quickly. But it all went downhill from there: 1. Our gas cannister ran out and it took about 10 minutes to flag someone down to come change it. 2. They never gave us a ladle for the pot until we again, had to flag someone down and when they did, they pretty much just plopped it onto our table 3. We ordered the omelette after all the previous items and it took a while to get a menu 4. They forgot to put in said omelette, and ended up waiting 30 minutes in total, just for some basic eggs. I've heard from other people who have been here that the service isn't normally like this. I might be willing to come back to try a different (perhaps less fatty) broth and their garlic fried rice. Probably not for a while though.

A must for traditional Japanese in NYC.

By Eric D |

Incredible! I've been wanting to try after hearing and reading nothing but great reviews. I was not disappointed. Very authentic, modern Japanese cuisine with some excellent touches. The pig ears and feet on the app menu are great. Served hot with crispy skin. The tempura shrimp sushi roll was outstanding. We had one of their famous table cooked hot pots with braised pigs feet in the broth, scallions, chives and lamb dumplings. The cabbage was very nice and all was prepared table side. If you're looking for little pieces of fish on rice, this is not for you. If you want actual modern Japanese then hurry to make a reservation!

While walking around late night I found this nice surprise... true sushi, cosy environment, friendly service.. will go back!

Best Japanese soup ever!

By 4Travel4Fun |

We stopped by at 7 pm, week day, intrigued by the reviews, and we were not disappointed. We had some sushi rolls, good, fresh and well presented, waiting for the Hakata TonTon Hot Pot to cook. The broth was great, tasty, slightly hot, the tonsoku were tender and delicious. The vegetables very good and balanced. Five stars to the very friendly and kind staff, that gave us good and precise suggestions.

Amazing food

The foie gras roll is one of the best things I've eaten recently. Everything is delicious and amazing.

Great little Gem

By Kensi N |

We stumbled across this fantastic restaurant when the subway was having issues. We had the soft shell crab, the spicy shrimp roll, salmon and avocado hand rolls and the pork gyoza. All the dishes were excellant and so delicious. The soft shell crab is served in a slightly spicy sauce. The gyoza is served sizzling on a cast iron plate. We also had a bottle of red and a small bottle of sake. The total for dinner was $110 (not including tip). A very authentic experience. Reservations are recommended.

Excellent! Worth the trip!!!

By JPTraveler5447 |

We decided to go to NYC especially to eat at Hakata Tonton. The grilled pork tonsoku with ponzu sauce (it also has another version with spicy garlic sauce) is my ultimate favorite!!! But there are so many other dishes on the menu that are just worth coming here for: sashimi platter (oh, so fresh), the monk fish liver (amazing!), the foi gras gyoza (speechless). Truly! Believe me! Worth having a meal at the NYC gem!

excellent sashimi

Authentic Japanese Restaurant

By Norbert H |

Ate with family member while visiting NYC during Memorial weekend. Dishes they serve are authentic Japanese dishes. I had whelk sashimi and kamachi sashimi - both dishes are amazing, very flavorable. Also had pig feet, garlic rice, soba creme brulee, sesame seed ice cream, and green tea tofu - all very good. I definitely will go back again to try other foods. Restaurant has limited tables, reservation is a must to guarantee seatings or wait outside for very long time for available tables.

Fantastic Japanese Restaurant

Amazing place, delicious food and a super friendly service. Really nice restaurant with a great food; the gyoza was fantastic!

Top Korean specialties with premium quality, Make sure you don't miss the Chef Koji's specials, they're delicious. Great experience overall.

Salty, porky Goodness!

By Ken S |

Great little Japanese restaurant specialising in Kyushu hotpot. It used to be a nightmare getting reservations but they recently expanded to an adjoining space so it's slightly easier to get tables now. If you're going there for the first time I would recommend the tasting menu which is very reasonably priced and gives a good variety of food. I love the grilled pork belly, foie gras inari sushi, soft shell crab, and of course the hot pot here. They offer different varieties. My Favourite is the white collagen one, really rich and yummy! Also it's apparently supposed to give you better skin, by making you fatter no doubt! Nice spot for home-cooked, tasty Japanese fare!

Always phenomenal!

By tjanovit |

My wife and I love this Japanese bistro - it has amazing food and great service! Make sure to try the foie gras inari sushi. We have been going to this place for years and it never disappoints!

Not your typical Japanese food

By Francisca |

We found this little Japanese restaurant while walking around at West Village. Since we were craving to have some Sashimi, we decided to enter this place. The restaurant is small and very interesting, it’s different from any other Japanese restaurant we’ve been to. We had 3 small plates and Sashimi platter. I must say the menu is interesting, I wish I could try them all, beside the tapas style, they also have hot food and hot pot as well. Ps: They have Japanese toilet style in their restrooms :)

Unique

By Tunaidi |

I'm a fan. I love that there's a Japanese restaurant here that doesn't specialize in sushi, ramen, udon/soba, or yakitori. Hakata Tonton's claim to fame is how they embed tonsoku (pigs feet) into their dishes. Don't be grossed out, because tonsoku is actually quite delicious. Aside from straight up tonsoku dishes, the tonsoku-stuffed gyoza and the tonsoku-based broth of their hot pots are quite extraordinary as well. There are only a few seats in this location and service can be hit or miss. But tonsoku is the bomb.

An experience, but the food was problematic

By Mickey |

We came for dinner. 5 people, quite expensive (bill came to @$250). The staff was nice and it’s a nice dinner experience where you cook your own meal. BUT we got a hotpot with chicken that was literally inedible (chunks of very unappetizing chicken that no one at the table liked). When we told the waiter the chef came out, he was nice but said “that’s the regular chicken”, and they didn’t take anything at all off of the bill (although it was clear we didn’t eat a bite of it). The cod for $18 is a tiny piece of fish. On the upside the atmosphere is nice, the creme brûlée was tasty, the sushi was decent, and those in our party who ordered the pork hotpot enjoyed it.

Rude Stuff!!!

By Rurina |

Japanese Female stuff is very very rude. Food is good and I love it but I almost don't wanna go back considering how rude she was. Attitude just really sucked and you could feel her bad mood all the way..... Check was wrong! Please double check your check! I was charged for something we did not even order!!! When I told them check was wrong, she corrected then told me there will be no void receipt... why???? Whole experience really sucked. I cam here happy, left really annoyed! and I am super happy positive person normally. Disappointing.

Authentic Japanese in the West Village

By Chevstar29 |

I spent 2 years living in Japan and this is one of my favorite Japanese restaurants in NYC. They specialize in pork - specifically pigs' feet - but everything on their menu is outstanding. Their hotpots are popular but I usually stick to their small plates- the grilled pork with miso, gyoza, kampachi sashimi, and both of their fried rices (with garlic or with caviar) are great. It's a small, homey place and reservations are a must.

Amazing Japanese restaurant!

By Perroge87 |

I've never eaten so great in such a good Japanese restaurant! You have to book a table because it's very small and crowded. The service and the waiters are excellent. The dishes are really particular and the speciality of the restaurant is the pork. It is cooked in the typical japanese way. Be sure to order the hotpot, you won't regret it!
