Outstanding burgers, easy non complex menu

By RezMat |

I discovered Hamburger America after a recommendation from a friend I made in Europe. After a few YouTube videos of this place I decided to give it a try. Not overly crowded and the open style kitchen + slight 1960s feel is definitely a game changer. Easy to read menu and tasty no nonsense burgers. Mr . Motz was not there but he can be proud of his staff who ran the show with the great food and great service.

Hamburger šŸ”

N.1 N.1 N.1 Best hamburger I've ever had, ever. First of all, although it may seem the opposite, it is not a chain but a single venue. It doesn’t have many seats so you have to be a bit lucky even if the customer turnaround is quite quick. There are only two types of hamburgers, with single or double portions of meat. A third type varies monthly. The burgers are not huge, so if you take the single ā€œdoseā€ two are more than fine. If instead you opt for the double, to eat two you have to work a bit harder, but you can still do it given the goodness. Soft drinks can be topped up in the most classic US tradition. The staff is not particularly nice, but the formula is a bit like fast food and you do not go there to make conversation. Fair prices for being in NY. Must try absolutely!

Blown away

Couple from Australia who heard about this place online. Easily the best burger we have ever had. Perfectly cooked and the onions take it to the next level. Place also had a great atmosphere and staff very friendly.

BEST BURGER

By Alf-Jonny Berge |

This place is a true classic with delicious food. We had dinner here and I tried their George Motz Fried Onion Burger and she had the daily special because she couldn't handle the onions at that time. We loved the food and the experience of sitting in an authentic American diner. We have always preferred some salad on our burger but this burger was out of this world and I would recommend this place to everyone coming to New York. Both the food and service was top notch. If we ever come back to the city then we will definitely do this again.

Excellent!

Excellent burgers! I got the fried onion burger, and my husband got the smash burger. Both were delicious! We heard an interview on NPR's Splendid Table. We knew we had to stop by on our upcoming trip to NYC. You can order and sit at the counter, or you can order at the register and sit at the tables up the stairs. Charming diner.

Cool establishment with juicy burgers!

The smash burger at Hamburger America is a game changer! Their old-school cooking style delivers a burger packed with incredible flavor. The counter seats are the best spot to enjoy your meal, and the friendly staff makes the experience even better. Don't leave without trying their key lime pie—it's a must!

Simple, diner style burgers. Refreshingly good!

By Travelers J&E |

We heard about the place and had to try it. It was very refreshing to arrive at a place where you don't need a reservation, there's no lines of people waiting to get in, the place was clean, spacious, well-lit. Their menu is simple but functional. You're there to eat burgers and fries, that's it. And that's what we got. After we ordered we went to sit on the back and waited a few minutes for our order to be delivered. Although i'm not a huge fan of smash burgers i have to say these were good. Simple but good. The fries were very good as well. I wouldn't put this burgers in the top category in NYC but it's definitely a good option if you're in the area.

Real American Burger

Simple, delicious and faithful experience to the true flavors of the American burger. The original onion cheese smashed is the best for me.

Divine in all simplicity

The best burger I’ve ever eaten in my life! Simple, without sauce, but absolutely succulent. The meat is exceptional, the bread is a real kill! When all the ingredients are of impeccable quality, the result is simply perfect. This is exactly what America Hamburger offers.

The BEST Burger place on the Planet!

By WC E |

Having had family that owned this kind of place for 25 years I knew what to look for At Hamburger America George the owner has created THE PLACE by now all others will be judged. Hamburger America is the 'epitome' of the best burger place on the planet. Up until my two visits this past week in Greenwich Village, I had always loved 'I N Out' but Hamburger America is the new go to for us whenever we're in the greatest city in the world. I was there with my daughter twice this past week two days ina row and missed George both times because I really want to shake his hand! WC Edgar

Go for the 'George Motz's Fried Onion Burger'!

By ianwelby |

I'm a fan of George Motz from his appearances on First We Feast so I knew on my first trip to New York I had to try Hamburger America and I was not disappointed. I was lucky enough for there to be space at the counter for the full experience and the very friendly waitress immediately recommended a counter seat as I entered. I had the fried onion burger and it's great to be able to sit and watch the kitchen at work and while it's not the fanciest burger you'll ever eat as a fairly pure, back-to-basics cheeseburger it was delicious. Really glad I took the walk to go and eat here. If you want that diner-esque feel with a great, straightforward burger I'd heartily recommend it.

Great burgers and shakes

By Alxc |

Drawn by the retro look, we stopped for a quick dinner on a hot July night, after a long day walking around the city. We got a table on the sidewalk, and placed our order at the counter. We did not start on the right food, as the ordering process was a bit chaotic and the lady at the til rather short tempered. Still the burgers were delicious, and went back for the shakes and key lime pie. We will be going back for sure.

Goodness does not fill the rudeness of the staff.

The 3 stars are not due to a mediocre quality of food, in this place I ate the best hamburgers ever! The fact is that when there is a lack of kindness and courtesy everything tastes more bitter. I went in with my family (it's November not August!) and noticed that the air conditioning was really strong, so much so that I couldn't take off my jacket. I tried to point it out to 3 people at the counter, but none of the three gave me an answer, they just laughed in my face and turned away. I ate with my jacket the best Hamburger ever tasted, in the cold and with the distinct feeling that in that place the well-being of the customer is absolutely not a priority.

Meet George!

By Brian L |

After watching his doc and buying his book, I knew I had to come here on my NY trip. Cool AF that George is actually there working the grill. Didn't want to bother him too much, but he was extremely friendly with customers and even knew some regulars. I think if you're solo and want to sit at the counter, you're in quick. The food is great! He knows his burgers... nothing gourmet here, but that's the way it's intended to be. The onion smash burger is the way to go, and don't forget the egg cream soda! Misanthropic and anti-social as I am, I ended up chatting with the neighbor to my right. Once she left, I ended up briefly chatting with the woman to my left. Both of them weren't too bad lookin, either. If a guy like me can enjoy some conversation and tasty burgers, that's definitely saying something.

Best burger I’ve tasted for sure

Amazing burgers the way they should be. This place is so good. It’s worth waiting for a seat by the chefs. Fantastic quick meal if you’re in the area.

George Motz's is a burger aficionado and this is his place --- GO!!

By Nobel |

George Motz is a burger aficionado, and when he has an establishment FOR BURGERS.. I will follow! I have seen George talk about his love for burgers for a long time, whether it's through online videos, social media, at pop-up events, and I even have his book "Hamburger America"! This guy knows burgers, and has went all around the country to try some of the best ones that can be offered! When you come in, the main thing to keep in mind is that the counter area seating is a separate line than the upstairs seating and outside. - If you want to sit in the counter, you will need to wait for an open seat, where they take your order when seated. - If you do not want to sit in the counter (sit at the area up the short flight of stairs or outside), then you order at the cashier, get a number, and sit down in an open spot that is NOT the downstairs counter area inside! If I am by myself or even with just 1 other person I typically would opt for the counter seating. You'll get to see and smell those delicious burgers being prepared right near you! What is great about this establishment is that he has a simple menu of burgers a fried onion burger or his smash burger. You can get the burgers with either one or two beef patties. Both burgers taste great! For the smash burger, I'll go for the double patties, whereas for the fried onion burger, I feel a single patty has a more ideal ratio of beef and onions in it. ALSO - another great concept is that George will do burger specials here and there. These burgers are ones that are located around the country at other local burger establishments. This allows you to keep trying a new type of burger somewhat regularly! Definitely stay up-to-date on their social media to see if there are any monthly burger specials! If you need sides, go for the shoestring french fries! They are simple, yet good with an ideal crisp to them. For drinks, I'll go for the lemonade or Arnold Palmer (lemonade & iced tea) ! They do have an area downstairs where you can get cups of water as well.

Juicy flavorful burgers!

Lost looking for Hamburger America in SoHo? Then the aroma of cooked meat wafted in the air and the restaurant magically appeared. Yesterday Jennifer and I came here to celebrate a birthday. Hamburger America has been open for two years and specializes in smash burgers. It’s styled in the 1950 era and has both indoor and outdoor seating. We took a booth in the back and perused the menu. Jen had the Monthly Burger Special from North Carolina which was a smashed burger with beef chili, onion and mustard on a toasted buttered bun. No cheese was her choice. I chose the Classic Smash Burger with the works and cheese. We shared the Shoestring Fries. I had the coffee milk which I didn’t care for. We both enjoyed our burgers and ate every fry. The front area has counter seating and the back has tables and three booths. Two gender neutral clean and large restrooms are also here. I am already planning another meal or two here!

Best Burgers in the World

By Francis T |

These burgers are the best in the city, if not the country, if not the world!! I tried the monthly special, and this month was over the top. I can say that a double onion is really the "go," but it is so much fun to try the classics from the country. The consistency is on point; the quality can't be beaten!

Delicious burgers, cool fit-out

Absolutely delicious burgers. It was very busy and hard to get a seat and we had to squish onto a side counter. Will be back.

Bes Smash Burgers Around

By everlast_34 |

We showed up expecting to wait in line, but fortunately, for the brief moment we showed up there wasn't one. We ordered a classic and the onion burger, and they were absolutely incredible. No doubt, the best smash burgers we've ever had. The only downside was that we were hoping for a George sighting, but he wasn't there.

The original double is great!

By Guillermo Di Bella |

The burger is delicious! The meat is excellent, and the bun is spectacular. I ordered a double, and I highly recommend it. I also tried the onion burger, but I didn’t love it because I found the onion to be too overpowering.

Weston’s Kewpie - Lansing Michigan - Olive Burger šŸ«’šŸ«’šŸ«’šŸ«’

By Stan Tecza |

Second time trying the Olive Burger at Hamburger America this month. Also got a smash burger today at the counter and a slice of key lime pie for the road along with the traditional George Motz Onion burger. Liked the olive burger most. The smash burger and the Chester I got last time was good but didn’t steal my heart like the olive burger. The Onion burger is always good.

Great

Finally managed to try the real deal after years of following George Motz online. Simple and short menu by everything is great, new favorite burger spot in town!

Very good experience

By Jeff S |

This is a great new hamburger joint in NYC. The ordering process was simple and was provided a number for dine in order. The food arrived quickly and the onion burger was amazing. The single burger is ok and size but next time I will order the double. At the table was ketchup and mustard. The shoestring fries were good. The half and half drink was very good as well.

Outstanding Smash Burger

By mntrvlrs |

Fantastic smash burgers. Our table tried both the onion and classic smash along with a side of fries. Burgers were cooked to perfection and reasonably priced. Great atmosphere that is clearly a local favorite.

Lives up to the hype

By Christoph1987 |

We waited about 30 minutes in line and secured a place at the bar counter. Sadly the bossman himself wasn’t there but his team did a wonderful job putting his vision on the plate. We had the double smash and the onion burger and they were absolutely delicious. I can recommend this place if you want to have a great smashburger in a clean and nice restaurant.

An Excellent Burger

By Epps Adventures |

My husband and I stopped here for a late lunch during our recent visit to New York. He was so excited to share this restaurant with me, as he eats here often during his work trips, and thinks it is one of the best burgers he has ever had. After my visit, I happen to agree. Especially if you like smash-burger style burgers, this is a fun and satisfying stop.

DO NOT.

By Jim K |

The burger and fries are comparable to Burger King's, only much more expensive. And the service is slow, and the staff dim-witted. Do yourself a favor, and patronize an actual fast-food burger joint instead.

Top, top burgers!!!

Definitely track this place down if you are in New York. Five of us made the trip and without doubt it was the best burger any of us had ever eaten anywhere.

Solly’s Grille - Monthly Special / The Butter Burger 🧈🧈🧈🧈🧈

By Stan Tecza |

Waited for the crowds to die down at Hamburger America since they opened a few months ago. Am a fan of George Motz’s Oklahoma Burger which I had the pleasure to try (sans the burger slide) at Farrells a few years back at a pop up event. Went for the double butter burger with sautĆ©ed onions. No cheese on my burger today. The Butter Burger is a version of the burger from Solly’s Grille in Milwaukee. I wouldn’t mind returning to try other monthly ā€œburger specialsā€. Also, got the off menu - Jonathan, half egg salad & half tuna. Delicious.

Great smash burgers

Delicious burgers at a reasonable price in Manhattan, small selection available on the menu but done extremely well. If you want a quick lunch this is definitely worth a visit. Friendly and prompt service.
