Too bad we weren't hungry.

By JillCDN |

Went to see the deli made famous by letterman. Sadly Rupert was not there. We were there about 1130am. The menus were not even up so we couldn't see what they had to offer. It was to screens but they weren't on. The food smelled good and there were a few people waiting for their food to take away. Bought some mugs for souvenirs. It is much bigger than it seems when seeing it on letterman

Rupert Jee's famous Hello Deli

By phvi2617 |

I used to watch Letterman all the time and loved the sketches featuring Rupert Jee, so I had to visit during this trip to NYC. It's a tiny, busy lunch spot, so it's probably best to get your order to go--I found a public plaza a couple blocks away to sit down and eat. I had the Alan Kalter, which was fresh and hit the spot. Rupert and his wife are super friendly and efficient. They also have a selection of Letterman and Colbert souvenirs. Prices were reasonable for NYC, and overall, a fun spot for a great sandwich.

Nice guy

By debPilm |

We didn't actually eat at the Hello Deli, we went to see Rupert (Dave Letterman's sidekick a few years back), and get some Dave Letterman Show souvenirs. Rupert was sincere and super nice. Some locals who were waiting for food commented that Rupert was awesome.

GREAT SUB ON SOME AWESOME BREAD

By TMC N |

Stopped by the Hello Deli during my last visit to pick up some Letterman shirts for a friend back home. While I was there I saw a table open up so I ordered a sub – The Letterman – the oil & peppers – and it was great. The bread was fresh and tasty. I saw someone complained about the size of the eating area inside of the Deli, it’s NYC – that is part of its charm. Oh, the prices are right in line with the other Deli’s throughout NYC as well. In reference to Rupert G, he has got to be one of the nicest people in NY. He is constantly being asked to pose for photos and to talk. The couple times that I have been there he has always honored every request and graciously offered his time and tips to people when asked. All the while trying to run a busy deli. Keep up the great work Rupert – I’ll be back for that Letterman sub again…. Just remember to hold the peppers & oil.

Agree with what others have said

Although we've known about Hello Deli every since Letterman moved to CBS, we never had visited. It is as others have described. Rupert and his wife are very friendly, and they offer excellent deli fare at reasonable portions and prices. The place is tiny, but both tables and the window ledge were available to us.

Rupert!

By Robert W |

I've been wanting to meet Rupert ever since he first appeared on Letterman. Well, finally that day came! We went mid-afternoon and there was Rupert just as I had always imagined him being. He took time to have his picture taken with us and was very friendly. He was very patient with my children, who took a long time to order. His sandwiches are delicious and everyone loved theirs. Thanks, Rupert!

Wife's birthday trip

By manders53 |

Mr Rupert "G" was in working. Regular guy , the "New Yorker" sandwich is great (have slaw, Not sauerkraut). Fun to talk to. Answer all your questions.

Small but great deli. Rupert is the nicest.

By oxx155 |

Very small deli. Almost a mix between a deli and convenience store. Rupert was there and was happy to take a picture and talk. Its a stop you just have to make for an experience.

Quaint and Friendly

By Reyates |

We happened into this deli and was greeted with friendly owners who went out of their way to accommodate us. Great food!

Great deli - no restrooms

By Darkwing28 |

Just beside the Ed Sullivan theater we went here based on TripAdvisor reviews and weren't disappointed. This is just a little deli so be forewarned, there are no bathrooms here. What they DO have is a great selection of deli sandwiches; some of which are named after famous people who have ordered them, probably on a regular basis. You can also get some Late Show with Steven Colbert merchandise here.

Hello Deli

By Randall C |

I had seen Letterman feature this Deli on his show many times and promised I go there if ever in New York City. I had a very good sandwich, and sure wasn't skimpy on the meat. It's a very small with only a few tables but worth the visit.

Lunch stop for sure.

By 232tmg |

This deli in terms of quality is one of the best in the area. The sandwiches are made to order exactly as asked, there are plenty of side items or other grill items other than a sandwich. One of the best things about this place is the atmosphere, Rupert and his wife are absolutely wonderful and very funny. There are some tables to sit at inside, these guys will take care of you like family. The prices are exceptionally reasonable as well.

Grab a sandwich, cup of coffee and meet Rupert from David Letterman!

By Heaven L |

We grabbed breakfast here. Rupert was kind enough to make a sandwich that wasnt on the menu. The coffee was piping hot and the food was great. Made fresh while we waited. Lots of regulars obviously come in, Rupert was greeting half the customers by name and making small chit chat. Cool place.

good prices, decent food at a TV 'landmark' in NYC

By SPN21 |

This is one deli in NYC that did not let the publicity around their location go to their head. The place is small and it can get crowded. It only seats about 7 customers so I suggest making your order 'to go'. It draws locals and tourists alike. Some of the hotel concierges will tell you that they eat there. As a family owned business it sometimes closes for vacations and typically closes earlier in the day than many of the other eating establishments in the area. Always check to see if they are open before going. Hello Deli is located on 53rd between 8th and Broadway -- close by the Broadway Theater where 'Fiddler on the Roof' is playing. We had the Colbert, a chicken sandwich with extras ($7.95). A package of chips added a little extra. Both were good. Salads are available as are vegetarian selections. But sandwiches are their mainstay and they have several named for the late night TV hosts who helped make the place famous. Most of the Classics like the reuben are also available. Service is friendly and prompt. If you find this information helpful please click the link below to let us know.

Goodbye Deli

By theredwiner |

A group trip to New York in December to see a Broadway musical sounds like a great time. My wife and I average about 4 trips per year to see the latest shows. Usually we travel by train and cab it to Broadway, stay the night and return to Philadelphia on Sunday. This was not one of our trips. My brother-in-law's company sponsored a bus trip. The drop off point was Radio City Music Hall as most people wanted to see the tree and lights at Rockefeller Center. Not familiar with the restaurants in this area, I sought inspiration on the internet. I came upon Rupert Jee's Hello Deli. The web site was fantastic. The menu huge. Specialty sandwiches bore the names of Letterman, Schaefer, and others associated with the David Letterman show. They played upon their relationship with the show. There were multiple pages on the site with hats, aprons and other items proclaiming their special status and bearing pictures of Rupert or celebrities. I saw a sandwich advertised with corn beef, pastrami, cheese, and sauerkraut. I love pastrami and couldn't wait to try this. Reality was cruel. Entering, we were stunned as the interior customer area was smaller than a corner bus kiosk. There was cramped seating for about 10 people on tiny tables with stools. This was clearly a take-out joint. Rupert manned the cash register while a lady did the cooking. That's right, one cook with a grill about 2 square feet and 1 sandwich at a time. I ordered the New Yorker, described above, and was told by the cook that she was out of pastrami, but she was substituting salami today. It was too close to theater time to look for another place so we ordered. 2 New Yorkers, (with salami) a Greek Salad and a Late Show. They were made and served one at a time, on sandwich wrapping paper. The salad came with plastic fork and knife. Salt and pepper were in the tear open paks as served with fast food. We ate and left. What a disappointment! We ubered to the theater and had about 20 minutes to wait before we could enter. We decided to have a drink at the corner bar. There we saw sandwiches with pastrami, served at a table or at the bar, on platters, which came with fries and a pickle like all the Broadway places we were used to. We learned the hard way, so it is Goodbye to the Hello Deli!

Made famous by the Late Show with David Letterman!

By John K |

Was at the Late Show with David Letterman, and had to stop by the Hello Deli afterwards. The sandwich was great, but nothing that I remember as being over the top. Rupert was very friendly and took a picture with me. It's one of those places you go to more for it being a "famous" place rather than for the food.

Tiny but Terrific

By lggg70 |

This is one of those places that you hear about, and figure it will be only mediocre. It was great! Welcoming, cozy, and great service. We both had chicken salad BLT sandwiches, and were very pleased! Very tasty. Don't miss this little place.

Hidden gem

By aharris2 |

Just around the corner from the Ed Sullivan Theatre where the Letterman Show is filmed lies Hello Deli. A second visit here, a couple of years after the first, was a must and the place didn't disappoint. Friendly staff, large menu and tasty food all make this place a hit. Slightly off the beaten track, it doesn't have the glitz and glamour of the Times Square tourist places but that just adds to its charm.

Must stop!

By SASK A |

We had the Big A** sandwich and it was very good. The food was fresh and done right, Robert G was friendly and took the time to talk to us. Stop in and visit this quaint deli

Hello Deli!!

By patty n |

We love Hello Deli!! Anytime we are in the city we stop in to see Rupert!! Delicious Ruebens! We've been going there since 2002!! Love it!!

Friendly service in a neighborhood deli.

By Arlene S |

The owners cater to the workers in the area but make everyone welcome and remember you when you return. The food is delicious and well prepared.

Good sandwiches at a fair price.

By Jan B |

The infamous Hello Deli and Rupert was featured on David Letterman show. I remembered and wanted to see it. We had lunch there and it was pretty busy. It's a tiny place with a few small tables and a small longer table facing the street. People watching the folks walking by and enjoying very good sandwiches was a treat. Rupert was at his counter serving his guests. It was fun!

Hello Diner from Letterman Days

By TexasBahamamama |

Went to the diner for a quick lunch. It is TINY but the sandwiches were great and reasonably priced. Rupert was working and he was so cute and congenial. He was gracious when ask to take pictures and posed in several for us. Definitely a GO TO when in NYS.

Just ok

By Monica S |

The pita with Turkey, cheese and honey mustard was good not great. The nice part about this deli is that prices are very reasonable for NYC. My husband got a reuben with coleslaw, said it was just ok.

Delicious and famous!

By Linda P |

Stopped here after lining up for David a Letterman tickets - - he carries all the David Letterman merchandise on some side shelves. Has a very cosy, afterthought, kind of merchandising. Took a couple of photos with Rupert who is very nice. Ordered a Veggie Club to go, which was fabulous. Returned a couple of days later just to get lunch. Nya's a Veggie Wrap and a Veggie Club - both were truly outstanding and memorable. Big Henderson came in and we had an interesting visit while we ate on one of the two little tables. Besides being so well known from seeing it often on the David Letterman show, it is really good. Small, cramped deli - loaded with character. Thank you Rupert and "Mrs. Rupert"!

Enjoyed seeing Rupert

By Cajuncouple50 |

Didn't order anything to eat but had the pleasure of seeing the deli and meeting Rupert. He was very friendly and kind.

Small but delicious

By SDSPhoenix |

Thanks Rupert G. It was great. We all tried different sandwiches and each was delicious. The smallness of the place made it quaint for us. We'll be back.

Perfect

By Si B |

Food is delicious! Great coffee, tea & best bagels I have ever eaten--staff is so kind. Very sweet lady behind counter at first visit-- she helped us with advice on where to shop for winter clothing. Was great to see Rupert but the gentleman cooking also deserves some praise! Best food we had on our trip & most reasonably priced. Wish we could go every day! Love Love Hello Deli ! Favorite for me & 14 yr old niece! From SC - nothing but love for Hello Deli

Very good Rueben

By Mac D |

Wanted an authentic Rueben while visiting NYC so found this place. Very good sandwich. Also enjoyed the memorabilia about the Ed Sullivan Theatre and the Late Show. Limited seating area so you may want to get lunch to go.

Made my day !

By kanavis31 |

I had to go there as a Letterman and Rupert fan, and wasn't disappointed. Met Rupert, who was gracious enough to take a picture with me . The lady who took my order and waited on me ( Rupert's wife?) asked what I'm doing in town , where I'm from , and just as friendly as could be. I ordered the Letterman, which is turkey and ham , which was very good . It might not have the mountain of meat that you think of from a New York deli, but it was much more reasonably priced as well .

Stopped in while in line for The Late Show

By Starwoodinpa |

Just popped in for a quick bite and drink while in line for Colbert. I've obviously seen them since Letterman's days. THEY ARE SO NICE! They were very gracious when I told them I was a fan of theirs since the Letterman days and it was nice to meet them. They were very prompt in service and with orders. It is very small in there so don't expect a lot of room, but they make the most of what they have. And they were absolutely lovely. Couldn't ask for more!

Would go again if passing

By lukedelves |

lady behind the counter was lovely, must have been making bagels for years, good bagel, alright coffee, cheap as they come (4$ for bagel and coffee).

Really Cool

By JFWhite |

Went here for great food. I always wanted to meet Rupert, he is really friendly and will take pictures with you. Try their sandwiches. Worth it!

Closed!

By MaryannF650 |

Gave an excellent rating even though we were not there due to the great Trip Advisor reviews. Too bad we were looking forward to lunch on this occasion. Next door neighbor said they were going to open on Tuesday (the day after Memorial Day).

Great Coffee And Chat With Rupert Gee

By Steve G |

This is a great little place around the corner from The Ed Sullivan Theatre on broadway. We got Coffee and a sandwich to take away and had a chat with the great Rupert Gee who had appeared so many times on The Late Show With David Letterman. If your in the Times Square area pop up broadway for a coffee..

Got to see Rupert!!

By thiborg |

We stopped by here and had a submarine sandwich that was delicious (can't remember the name of it. Also had the sweet potato fries-excellent! Rupert and his employees were very kind people, and Rupert had no problem when I asked if I could take a picture with him. I would definetly eat here again!!

Good Deli

By iver0185 |

Rupert was friendly and offered good food suggestions. It's a small New York Deli...but the food is good. I'm sure he gets asked all the time for selfies but he's patient and happy to oblige. If you're a David Letterman fan, don't miss this!

Yummy & Fun Hole in the Wall

By JETT |

Great place to pick up a soft drink or water, snack or order a hamburger, panini, or chili cheese hot dog. Very small space, but we don't care. It's understood that you may be sharing space with another person or two grabbing lunch. Rupert closes when he feels like it, usually by 5:00 or 5:30. Fun to watch the interaction of the CBS interns, the local young people who pop in regularly for the same thing day after day. We have always been happy with the food and the price.

Wonderful!!!

By bkbkg |

This was our first stop after checking into our hotel just around the corner. We were greeted right away and had wonderful friendly service. We did not tell them we had just arrived but it felt as if they new, they took extra care to make sure our visit was special and everyone who came in was treated that way. The sandwiches were very tasty. I was hoping to return before we left, but just didn't have enough time. Highly recommend a lunch here!

T-shirts

By Darla65in2015 |

I went there to buy letterman T-Shirts. I also brought a Hello Deli shirt. The clerk was very friendly and the shirts are nice. I didn't get any thing to eat or drink.

A great stop, delicious food and a chance to meet Rupert

By Bill Z |

Rupert, the owner of Hello Deli, once was a real staple of the comedy skits on the Late Night with David Letterman show, but hasn't been seen there for awhile. The Hello Deli is right next to the Ed Sullivan Theatre where Letterman performs and it makes for a quick and easy stop. If you are lucky, you might even see some of the Lettermen crew check in, like Bif Henderson, who is a regular. We were there quite late but Rupert was running the place and was so friendly and amicable that our visit soon stretched on to an hour or so. We were the only ones in the deli and made our way to one of the small tables. The food was great, we ate delicious sandwiches, reasonably priced and saw a super selection of menu items as well. Rupert also didn't mind answering questions and posing for photographs. If you stop there while lining up for David a Letterman tickets, you can actually pick up some Letterman merchandise which is located on side shelves. Although the place is small, like many street restaurants in NYC, it is a great deli and makes up for its lack of size by its unique character and location.

Still Tiny but Terrific

By lggg70 |

This is my sixth time to eat at Rupert’s. Everytime we come to NYC, I make it a point to come here. Rupert and his wife are sooo sweet. She calls all the women ‘my lady’, and is so polite. The sandwiches are great too. Grab a seat (if you can) and just enjoy a few minutes there.

Just as I hoped

By Rex R |

Got to meet Rupert who posed for a photo with us. He and the woman at the register (his wife?) were extremely nice and even did a special order for out daughter who is picky. Our sandwiches were excellent.

Quick stop

By Lydacpa |

Stopped in for a quick sandwich with the family since it was close to our hotel. Good and quick. Rupert was super nice and easy to talk to. Glad we stopped by!

Wow! Eat here!

By Don |

May took our order, such hospitality! Such a happy person! Spoke with locals who eat there constantly- THIS is the NY deli experience I wanted, and I was not disappointed! All food is good - can't go wrong, but there are only two tables!

Fun and Good

By 380stanleyc |

I am a huge Letterman fan. Always used to watch the show. Loved the bits he used to do with Rupert G. So it was a HUGE treat to walk in and see Rupert working the Deli. He was friendly and took a picture with me I will treasure. I had the Letterman sandwich and it was very good. Got me a T-Shirt of the old show too. Just a great experience all around.

Nice folks, good food, fair price

By MSLovell |

Wanted a reliable, portable, fair-priced, corned beef on rye to take to park. Didn't want to wait in long line. This small place fit the bill. Enjoyed Rupert and Hello Deli for years from Letterman- very friendly -good sandwich plus pickle was $10 including tax ! They even recommended place for dinner which am looking forward to trying !

Just plain good!

By Debbie P |

For our recent NYC trip I wanted lunch at a GOOD, authentic deli. Repeatedly, Rupert Jee's came up. So, we went! It is a tiny space, but we went early so were the only patrons. The delightful Oriental/Asian lady that greeted us made us feel special with her warm welcome; I regret I didn't get her name. She pulled out four little plastic stools to seat us at the window front bar. We didn't plan it, but all ordered the same sandwich. I think it was the New Yorker - some with sauerkraut, some without. Both versions were delicious! They weren't inches thick with meat, but had more than enough. So good, in fact, that we ordered another to share. If you're looking for a good sandwich in a non-touristy atmosphere, Rupert Jee's is the place to go.

Very good sandwich

By hesster |

Before leaving for New York, I had only one restaurant request and that was to eat at Hello Deli. Saw Reupert Jee who was made famous by David Letterman, I had the New Yorker which is a combination of Corn Beef and Pastrami. Delish!

Highlight of NYC visit!

By Kathy C |

We were staying one block away from the Hello Deli and stopped in for lunch. What a treat! I got to meet Rupert, who I loved on Letterman, and he and his staff couldn't have been nicer. The sandwiches are delicious; we ordered the Alan Kalter and the Hello Deli, plus a Letterman t-shirt to go. Loved our visit!

Small! Rupert was there

By Richard B |

While waiting for the Ed Sullivan theater to open we stopped into the Deli (which is right there) and Rupert was there. I saw him posing for some pictures while I made my purchase from him. I think he gets a lot of that. If you attend a Late Show taping, he'll be in the lobby selling t shirts after the show.

Really good (And no, we didn't know)

By TripTipDad |

On our way to a musical, we stopped in for a quick bite. I had a burger, which surprisingly was very good. The sandwiches everyone else had were very good. Yeah, it's a tiny hole in the wall, but you're in NYC, and if you want to go scream in a larger Deli, they are a dime a dozen. No, we didn't realize, until after we were inside that this was THE Hello Deli. Didn't occur to any of us for some reason. Nice folks here, and we'll be back next time we're in NYC for theater time.

The Most Underrated Tourist Destination in NYC!

By Joy M |

For fans of the Late Show with David Letterman, the Hello Deli has it all: famous locale, celebrity sighting, affordable food, DELICIOUS food, and a place to sit! Seriously, this was a great little stop on our visit to NYC. I had the Shaffer wrap, and it was so fresh and delicious! Rupert and his wife are so pleasant and friendly — his wife calls everyone “sweetie pie,” and it looks like they have many regulars whom they call by name. I waited for a lull in the steady stream of customers and asked Rupert if he’d take a picture with me. I told him how much we loved his segment when he was on Letterman, and he replied that it was fun while it lasted. ;-) The Deli has a wall of Colbert and Letterman mugs, t-shirts, and other souvenirs you can buy in addition to your delicious sandwich! Three of us had sandwiches, chips, and sodas, for a total of $32. Not bad for a lunch in NYC!

Excellent food

By boltonfamilyUk |

Visited here three times in four days. Really friendly, good price and most important excellent food. Give it a try if your in the NYC area, we were fortunate enough to be staying around the corner.

Hello Deli...Goodbye Deli

By C-by-the-sea |

God awful. From the second we walked in we knew it was just all wrong. Save your money and go to a real deli. These were mediocre sandwiches at best for way too much money. Tiny space, very uncomfortable kindergarten tables and chairs, pitiful selection of sandwiches and awful service. Two thumbs down.

Great place and a friendly face

By Todd G |

The Hello Deli has been shown on the Tonight Show with David Letterman. Rupert and his staff are awesome. He is so down to earth and easy going. It was one of the best sandwiches we had in NYC. Try the New Yorker, you won't be disappointed. Rupert is a champ and will be happy to take his photo with you. He is very humble. Located just around the corner from the Ed Sullivan theater, give it try,

Delicious and friendly!

By 205JamieR205 |

Such delicious sandwiches, and the staff was incredibly friendly and sweet. They even brought us some free bags of chips while we were eating. Lots of staff from the Colbert studio came in and out while we were eating - seems like their go-to place. There's not much seating, so be prepared to take your sandwich to go if necessary. Delicious and fun.

Best place to get Late Show gear.

By Steven from the Mills |

Saw Late Show merchandise in the window, walked in, and sure enough, Rupert Jee was there at the register, a bit quiet and shy as before with Letterman. Rupert pointed out rows of Colbert shirts and hats, as well as a few rows of Letterman gear. Good spot to grab a cold soda etc... Too early to eat, so I can't weigh-in on food quality. Small place, but priceless!

Great neighborhood deli

By Donald W |

Staff was very friendly and actively try help you pock the ideal sandwich. Location is part deli and part convenience store. Location is nothing special but the people and the food are excellent.

Bette Midler - Best way to mark a trip to Broadway

By DeMadTraveller |

Omg!! A check of the bucket list!! Watching Bette Midler live !!! She is perfectly perfect as Dolly and no one could have done it better!! She certainly did it Ms M's way Loved it ! Loved it! Loved it!

It was okay

By Joanna C |

The reviews were so good but the place was just okay. There was not much pastrami on my sandwich. We went to Lenwich (a chain restaurant) and got more for our money. Barely any seating so take it to go.

Good Deli

By mcinnese |

I went here as part of a trip to NYC specifically to see a Letterman taping, we went in for lunch before the show. As soon as we walked inside there was Rupert making a sandwich for Bif and that was pretty cool from a fan's perspective. We ordered, and Rupert brought our sandwiches to us at the one little table they have inside. He was happy to take a picture as well. A note about my rating - I rated the atmosphere as very good, but this is just a simple, functioning deli, with only one table. There is nothing extraordinary about it other than the connection to Letterman which is why I rated it such. The food was pretty good deli fare, and the pricing is decent for the area. I would go to this deli again even if I wasn't a fan of the Late Show.

Worth the visit

By PhileasFoggontour |

Hello Deli doesn't offer gourmet food but what they offer is good - and for the area - well priced. Rupert, of the Letterman show fame, always makes time for visitors who want a photo or a quick word. There's also a good stack of Letterman t-shirts and the like. There isn't much space but the locals take out so generally there's somewhere to sit. There's a wide variety of sandwiches - listed on illuminated boards over the counter - each with a showbiz name. Most work well. My advice would be to stick to the sandwiches rather than the fries and other offerings, but whatever you choose you won't spend a fortune here.

Great Breakfast

By Lorraine R |

While visiting NYC we asked our Concierge for a recommendation for a place to grab a quick breakfast before heading off for a day of sight-seeing. The recommendation of Hello Deli did not disappoint. We had bacon, egg and cheese bagels with cream cheese and coffee. Quick, friendly and tasty. The second day we tried a different bagel shop, but after waiting quite s while in a long line that didn't move, we returned to Hello Deli. Once again, it did not disappoint.

Great deli

By Florence E |

Excellent service, great food - we ate in, but also a busy food pick up spot. Everything we ordered was fantastic.

No frills, good food, super nice owners

By PriorSafety |

Rupert and Mae are the nicest people. They treat their guests nicely and always very pleasant and wiling to take a picture. The food is really good (In a fan of the Paul Shafer) with tons of inventive sandwiches with kichy names. Not sure about now but they always made fresh turkey on Thursdays. If you go be prepared to take your food to go. There are very few tables/chairs and not a lot of room.

David Letterman Memories

By bluejeanfood |

You can not only get a great sandwich here, but you can buy a t-shirt to show you came here which is a plus. The day I came Rupert Jee was behind counter and happy and helpful. Too bad Letterman isn't on air anymore though.

Food was good, service was even better!

By Sara S |

Hello Deli is super tiny (really only room for a couple of people to sit), and really meant for takeaway. From what I can tell, they'll make you anything you want if they've got the ingredients, and the sandwiches we had were great. Even better than the food, though, was talking to and listening to the person who took our order, who I'm guessing now was May Chin, based on what I'm reading online - she is THE BEST!!! Even if you don't like food, you should come here and order something just to have the chance to talk with her. So kind, smart, funny, fun, everything that you want a person to be. I will 100% be back next time I'm in NYC!

Great deli selection and Rupert Jee

By jbla1951 |

David Letterman may have made "Hello Deli" and it's owner, Rupert Jee, part of his Late Night show's running gags, but it is still a great place (just off Broadway around the corner in the Ed Sullivan Theater building) to get a great deli sandwich. Don't forget to check out the David Letterman Show souvenirs. Rupert is warm and welcoming...and has great memories to share.

Ruppert G still rules

By peter k |

Dave may be gone but Ruppert G is still in the building A good lunch spot in midtown and Ruppert is always friendly & entertaining.

To go lunch

By Rick S |

Showed up at 1130 to get a BLT. No one was there so it was just May, Rupurt, and I. May is one of the most pleasant, kind folks I have ever met. Rupurt made my BLTin timely fashion while May and I talked. It was great!

Say Hello to Hello Deli

By jennifer554 |

Sure, I wanted to go to Hello Deli because of its David Letterman fame. But this authentic hole-in-the-wall served me one of my most memorable meals in NY. I had a veggie wrap, and it was great! And the cashier was very nice and friendly. They sell Letterman merchandise there, too.

Around the corner from Dave's show

By flintjarvis |

My wife and I had tickets to view the David Letterman show. I know from watching some of Dave's shows in the past that he sometimes features Rupert J. on his show. For lunch we decided to have a couple sandwiches at Rupert's place. When my wife and I visited, many of the supporting crew from Dave's show were in the deli ordering sandwiches. They were all very friendly. Biff (from Dave's show) and Rupert even obliged to take some selfies with us. I ordered the "Big A55" sandwich. I enjoyed it a lot. Even if this deli didn't have the fame of being featured on the Letterman show, it could stand alone because the food really is affordable, fresh and tasty. Rupert was the best of hosts and even set up some extra chairs so my wife and I could sit and eat (the dining space in the deli is incredibly small). The souvenir shop for the "Late Night with David Letterman" show is located on one wall of the deli. I hope Rupert J. and his wife will continue to have success long after Dave and his crew retires. Be sure to come back around the corner and visit after the Letterman show wraps up a live show... many celebrities and crew hang out in the street by the deli when a show is done.

"Good food"

By evildwarf |

Good deli food. May is definitely the best part of the visit. She apparently has never met a stranger. She's very warm and welcoming. Visited b/c of connection to the Letterman show.

Walking around on a nice summer day, looking for a good sandwich. Dont dine out much, but it was such a nice summer day in NYC. Wandering away from Times Square I thought I could get a better deal for lunch and wandered into this deli. Once I ordered, I was looking around the shop and realized it was Rupert Jee's, from Late Night. He and Mary were so friendly and gracious. They were happy to take a pic and also gave me a loyalty card as I told them I was in the neighborhood. I ordered a Colbert (Chicken cutlet, cheese, lettuce, tomato and mayo on a hero). It hit the spot. Decent breakfast and lunch menu. They will also make sammies on request. Prices aren't horrible.

I have been here twice and the food and the service are wonderful. Typical little New York Deli.

I came across Hello Deli when I was walking around the Theater district and had never noticed it before. I could not believe that this was place that David Letterman was always talking about. I had never been here before and I had worked in the neighborhood. As I was doing business in the neighborhood, I ended up eating here twice and both times for a early dinner. The first time I ate here, I had the Doughy Sandwich, which is two scrambled eggs with bacon, cheese and hashbrowns on a toasted roll. It was delicious and perfect on a cool winter evening. The second time I visited, I had the Chicken Salad with Bacon, Lettuce and Tomato on a toasted roll and that hit the spot after a long day. They have a nice selection of chips, cookies and sodas to choose from to accompany a meal and everything is so reasonable for Midtown. You do not find gems like this with excellent food, reasonable prices and nice portion sizes in Midtown Manhattan anymore. They have either closed or raised their prices. It is nice that places like Hello Deli are here for people to enjoy and not have to spend a lot.

Get the new yorker sandwich!!

Got the new yorker sandwich... Delicious!! Reasonably priced, friendly staff... Not much to look at and the tables inside were tiny but loved it

Great Sandwich!

We stopped in for lunch and didn't realize the seating was limited. It is very small inside, but we ordered and finally were able to sit at a table. The lady behind the counter was so nice and even gave us some of the house fries to try. Everyone's sandwich was fresh and made to order. Great little place!

I liked the fact he seemed so down to earth and not bothered when we asked for a picture. I have no dislikes. He and his wife were really nice people. He continued to provide great customer service and occasionally joked with his patrons while also interacting with his fans.

Website says “Open” but clised

Two years in a row I tried to have lunch at Hello Deli. Both years it has been closed. This year I checked the website, which indicated that it was open. Since the internet never lies, I made my way there once again. Closed, despite their website indicating “open.” Someday I might actually eat a sandwich there, but I will call first to make sure they’re actually open.

"Must visit"

By David W |

Walk in the door, and get greeted by Rupert, the owner of the deli. He is famous for the David Letterman show. Rupert never turns down a photo op, he should have his own show. He and his wife are extremely nice and his hands on supervision is refreshing. Good Deli with reasonable prices. Small "hole in the wall" with limited seating. Had the "megadog special of the day" with frys. Yummy !!!!

Not a tourist trap

Look, if you're looking for lunch, and you are already in the neighborhood, and want a place that will make you a sandwich, this is it. The prices are reasonable. it is a traditional NYC deli/sandwich shop.

Excited to meet Rupert!

We had seen Rupert and his Hello Deli many times on the Late Show with David Letterman but had never got a chance to visit. We arrived to a friendly greeting from Rupert who was very pleasant in letting us take a picture with him. Lots of sandwich options but we just bought a couple of reasonably priced beverages.

Yum!!

Stumbled in here for some soup and a sandwich. The lady owner was so sweet and took great care of us. We ordered a bunch of food and it was decently priced... 3.50$ for soup and 3.75 for half sandwich. Will definitely return!

Really good and quick food near Times Square

By dennis k |

If you are going to Late Night with Stephen Colbert or are near his theater I would highly recommend stopping at Hello Deli and getting a quick bite. The sandwiches are excellent and prices are fair for the Times Square area. Plus you will probably see and be able to talk with Rupert from the David Letterman show. So not only do you get a memory but you get quality food. The service is also friendly and quick. If there is a drawback it is the size of the restaurant. However, most people probably take their food to go here. My wife had a New Yorker that had smoked corned beef that she loved. Mine was the Letterman which appropriately was mostly ham. We both said we would definitely eat here again. Also check out his souvenirs, he still has several David Letterman items and now has some for Stephen Colbert .

Friendly great service!

Super sandwiches. Great service, friendly and cordial lady who took our order. She brought it out to us and even divided it up. We didn’t pay till after we ate and she trusted us to relay what we had. Probably the nicest people we dealt with on NYC. Loved seeing Rupert after watching him on Letterman.

Small but very cool Deli.

Nice sandwich for a quick stop in while waiting for the Letterman show taping. Rupert is also a nice host and very willing to take pictures. Prices are pretty good too.

Great local deli.

Stopped by for lunch before a show. The reviews were great, so we checked it out. Fabulous deli, the corned beef sandwich was grilled perfectly. The folks running the place were friendly and prices very reasonable for Midtown. Really good sandwiches and loved the atmosphere. Definitely a do again!
