Decent food but mediocre service

I had been looking forward to visiting Ikinari Steak for a while and unfortunately it was a little bit disappointing. They have a few different cuts and you order how many oz you want at the counter with the chef who cuts and grills your steak with the default sides of onion and corn. The ordering process was a little bit confusing as our server said we have to order our sides with him and the steak with the chef. Service really left something to be desired and after we had gotten up to order with our chef our server asked if we could "pass him our menus" even though they were right in front of him?? The only service we really got that night was getting the menus handed to us, a short explanation and a glass of water. Despite the fact that I enjoyed the garlic flavour of the steak and the sauce, the service really made this restaurant a miss for me. Maybe I will try a different location next time?

When you want some steak fast!

By foodlovergirlny |

Ever since Ikinari Steak came to NYC, I have been very curious… First of all, this restaurant came from Japan. Their unique idea is to serve a steak faster and cheaper than other real-deal steak restaurants. And with that new concept, the interior is designed with tall standing tables. But, at this location, they added bar stools so that the customer doesn’t have to stand while eating. The word “Ikinari” means “sudden” or “strait into” something, so at this restaurant, you can go straight into steak, without having any appetizer, sides dishes or even drinks. Kind of fun name. This location had more seating in the back with regular tables and chairs, I assume for those people who are not in a hurry to get in and out. Each table has a laminated number. And here is where it gets just a little tricky. After you decide what you want to order, you take that number to the order station to order your steak. Side orders such as soup. salad, rice, etc. can be ordered with your server. But, the server can NOT take your steak order. The steak grill master (?) came out and sliced our choice of meat right in front of us. Yes, their steaks are cut to order, and cooked on an open-fire. The steaks are presented on a sizzling cast-iron platter. This means, there will be some spattering of the juicy oil. But not to worry, they have thought of that! Each seat comes with a bib to protect your clothes, and foldable storage bins to keep your bags from getting dirty on the floor. The staff even brought a red cloth on top to protect the bag from the spatter above as well. Now, it is time for the steak! I ordered a Sirloin and Top Ribeye. When I poured J-Sauce, I was expecting some crazy sizzle, but there was no sizzle action…I assume the iron plate got cooled down while I was taking photos… Before we got all these food, we also ordered a side of Garlic Pepper Rice. It was HUGE! It is as big as the steak! It is more than enough to be shared among two people. All the food we had were really tasty and we enjoyed it very much! The staffs here on this day, checked on us often, making sure we were well taken care of. Very attentive, friendly and gave good explanation of their food, ordering system and anything else that we asked. Joshua was really great! I know that they try to provide “Japanese hospitality” at Ikinari Steak restaurants in NYC, I think they have done a nice job here at this location!

Super steak and super service

By Brage Eyde |

The super service and the great meat. The fresh beef, modern interior with the open kitchen is great. Modern and romantic, with great food. Fun eating with a bib and relaxed environment. Super! And good price as well. Absolutely great and you get way more than you pay for.

I Like It A Lot

Steak is not my usual choice for lunch but I've seen this place on TV so decided to give it a go during my conference lunch break. The steak was of high quality and cooked perfectly. It didn't take long, but maybe it was a relatively empty Saturday noon. My expectation was met. It was a great idea for a solo diner who just want a high-quality steak for a reasonable price.

Another style! Try it, love it!

“Oh My God! A tiny steakhouse!” might be your first thinking if you come to this restaurant randomly, or by hazard. Not spacious, a bit hidden, inside the pool of exotic restaurants are very few weak points, and that all. In fact, it is one of the must try steakhouses in NYC. This restaurant offer two different kinds of beef: American beef and Japanese beef. Japanese beef (Wagyu Kobe) could be considered as restaurant’s specialty. In this restaurant, the quantity of meat is to order. The “cut to order” is interesting. You can admire the block of steak. The friendly vendor asks you all things: the desired quantity, how cooked the steak, which side desired... Various kinds of sauce and dressing are prepared. It is recommended to eat “rare” with “restaurant special J-sauce”. Moreover, the price is very reasonable, for nice dishes. Mochi ice cream is recommended as dessert. I came there by hazard, I tried it, and I really love it. It could be considered as another style of NY steak!

My little reminder of Japan

By Lambretta101 |

So Ikinari has reached New York. Well ain’t you lucky. We where looking for a steakhouse and did a quick internet search. I couldn’t believe my luck when up popped Ikinari Steak restaurants. I have been raving about Ikinari since returning from a trip to Japan in December where I discovered this chain. Queues where common site outside the restaurants, always a good sign. My first experience was ordering my steak while standing in Ikinari, Hiroshima. We gets to the well placed Ikinari at 46th street, off 9th- pretty handy location, at 1045. The guy told us they where closing (1100) and it was too late to serve us. I explained I’d eaten in Hiroshima, Yokyo and Kyoto Ikinari restaurants only months earlier, loved them, understood the concept and wouldn’t keep them late. Much to one of the staffs annoyance he agreed to serve us. Now the wild steak is amazing , but then so is the rib eye.... in fact they all are. My partner took a sirloin, I settled for my old favourite the wild steak. Up to the counter, chose the size of cut you want, it’s cut and weighed. You pay by weight. Back too our station. Unlike Tokyo there are stools to sit on. We ordered our side and a beer. Japanese beer obviously. Meanwhile our steaks are seared over an open flame grill and served to us on a 400degree iron griddle. The trick is not to apply any sauce until your steak is cooked to your taste as the sauce will cool the plate. I like mine rare. They only do rare in Japan but I noticed they try and accommodate people who want it done a bit more, maybe by keeping it on the open flame grill longer. You can see from the pictures the size of the pieces of fine beef. Absolutely delicious. The special Sauce is good, the garlic paste amazing. The salad dressing lovely. My shirt was protected by the paper apron supplied while my jacket tucked into the folding rack under my station. Once wasn’t enough and we made a further two visits to other Ikinari during our trip to Nee York. This concept would go down a storm in Glasgow

Good Value-Quirky Atmosphere

By Hugh |

My steak was very good and the price was right. The atmosphere will take some adjustment. It is more of a place to get a quick steak dinner - a fast food venue for high quality meat. The tables are more like sitting at a lunch counter. This is not a place for a leisurely dinner for two or more. In the center of the table is kind of barrier stocked with sauces and condiments, making it difficult to carry on a conversation with someone sitting across from you. I dined alone so it was fine. For two it would be best to sit side by side. The food is good but this model will not work in the US.

Wanted a pleasant dinner and was dissapointed

By David S |

We were at their restaurant at 243 54th St in NY, but Tri Advisor did not list it. The service was really nice, a very pleasant waitress who explained to us how Ikinari service works and then we went over to place our orders. I was quite disappointed. Both my colleague and I order rib eye cooked rare. When the arrived at least 15 minutes later they were both well done and tough. We pointed this out to the waitress. She looked at them and immediately took them away and promised to replace them with rare steaks. By then we were pressed for time. The rare steaks arrived and while now cooked to our request they were certainly not great. The table has many different sauces on it. I guess they realize that they are not serving great steak and that the patron is welcome to disguise this fact by smoother the meat with additional flavor. A good steak needs absolutely no additives. The reviews that I have read seem to say that people are willing to settle for mediocrity and call it good. To add to our disappointment, within three hours both my colleague and I were sick to our stomachs. As we both had the same simple lunch and felt fine all afternoon, we can only attribute our difficulties to the dinner. I definitely will not return to this place

Worth it!

By dawng240 |

Solid steak dinner with a Japanese twist. From the moment you’re seated it all seems to follow a script. Part of the engineered experience and it’s quite fun, actually. Not a ‘fancy’ place but would definitely be a fun date-night or dinner with friends location. Wait staff was attentive, which I didn’t expect. Well-priced.

This place is amazing and the prices are cheap. £35 for 2. salad & soup, steak, potato, onion & green beans. Friendly service. Highly recommended

Yummy steak and good service

Second times visit this location. The steak still amazing and service was excellent. The steak on the sizzling plate was so yummy.

Just Like Tokyo

By 961daleh |

The first couple of steaks that we ordered were unavailable but we did eventually hit on something that was on hand. Cooked to absolute perfection. You'd swear you were in Tokyo, right down to the electronic bidets and mouthwash in the restrooms.

New favorite casual dining in NYC!

By DaveV075 |

If I could eat here every day, I would. Yes my steak was thin and I don’t care. I could have ordered the larger one. Such a fresh taste and it is served on a spattering platter that makes any meat lover smile. Reminded me of when I lived in Tokyo many years ago and that is the highest compliment I can give. All that and lunch for two at under $25... and that is STEAK!!

Value for moneu

Good steak cuts. Try not to put too much sauce on it. How they cook it (med-rare on mine) is perfect. There are chairs. You can sit down if you want. (advertised as standing steak house)

Steak at Stake!

By tonyangbee |

Definitely a must-eat-here resto when you are in Manhattan. Not so pricey and yet totally delicious. The place is not so big but it’s clean and the staff are friendly and polite. You better make a reservation so that you’ll have lesser time waiting to be seated as it gets full especially during dinner time.

Great Steak - New Concepts - Mixed Bag

By Asaf S |

Ikinari is located on 46th street, between 8th and 9th Ave, which means a short walk to many Broadway venues. Since I avoid carbs and sugar a Japanese Steak house seemed as the ultimate eatery for a pre-Margaritaville musical dinner with the wife.. After having dinner there, I am not sure if they are ahead of their time, are they the new Chipottle? Too much is different here, so you can decide. Here is a count by count description of my experience - not in order of importance. 1) Mouth masks - all employees wear a clear mouth guard, seems very Japanese, but in all was too much, I would not like to work like that, looks like a huge prophylactic to what I think of as a minor issue. 2) Seating - This is probably my biggest gripe, the seating is for a on-the-go train station, solo eating style. Not for a pre-show dinner. The tables are high (lower tables in the back), but the partitions in the middle are to prevent eye contact. Not a good setup for a romantic dinner, you better sit side-by-side, eat and go. 3) Ordering - Sides and drinks from the server, steak from the butcher, why? 4) Menu - the menu is tiny, maybe 8 items, Not sure until now what are the sides. They say you can order veggie sides - I did , got 6 pieces of broccoli. 5) The steak - Well for all the hassle of getting used to - you will get a great steak. 6) The Iron plate, the sauce and bib - There are bibs on the table, because the steak is served on a hot cast iron dish, and when you pour the sauce its going to get messy. 7) The sauce tooooooo salty - try before you pour on the steak toooooo bad 8) The bags - If you come with a bag they will set you with a bag holder. Why not just have a hoot under the table to hung the bags? Again the solution seems more cumbersome than the problem. 9) The speed - It turned out that though we came as a couple, we came late sat down by 6:15, made it on time to 7:00pm show. 10) So what did we have here: A speedy, great tasting steak, with a what? nothing here size of a side. Super fast in and our, messy salty sauce and confusing ordering system. Would I come again, Maybe with my sons for a quick bite. Pricing is reasonable for T Sq and the location.

Just because

We were done shopping and was just hungry. Stop at this place since the ad was big and the steak is not expensive. Oh boy the food was good. And just right amount for me. Love the food and service was quick!

Authentic japanese steak on a sissler

By A M |

This restaurant concept originated from a famous japanese chef. You can choose how you want your steak served. It is served on a sissler pan to your table. You can season yours as you like. But beware, the pot is extremely hot! Delicious and fun! Also excellent sake is available.

Great concept, amazing steak

By Steve P |

Dined here this evening with my wife after a long day walking around Museums and Central Park. Stumbled across the restaurant, but wow, what great quality. Restaurant is very relaxed, along more of a cafe concept. Vary relaxed. Lovely staff - attentive, but not over powering. However the highlight is the quality of the steak - no pretentious, just really good melt in the mouth quality. My only suggestion for improvement would be to serve the sides on a warmed plate rather than on the griddle - and possibly offer. Few more selections - fries being the obvious one for me. We’ll be back

Value steakhouse

By campfamily50 |

Good steaks, really like the concept of customer chosen size and pay-by-the-ounce. We ordered filet mignons with a few sides and rice. The steak sauce was good but the Ikinari sauce was better. Our filets were cooked just right and tasted good. I just was missing sides like buttered asparagus or a big buttered baked potato. If these were available and good, I would increase another star.

Overrated steak claimed from Japan

By TATAN |

What a rip off! I am pretty sure the beef is not from Japan but simply US beef.. it didn’t even tasted wagyu grade! Your pepper rice is simply a copycat version of Pepper lunch from Japan.. it doesn’t even tasted the price you marked up.. go to Costco and get the better USDA beef pls. One star for the authentic Japanese setup that’s all.. by the way, side of the steak was charred and tough for a rib eye. Total disappointment experience for a Japanese owned eatery.

A serendipitous find!

By oliviasaru |

My daughter and I were walking back to our hotel when I accidentally turned down 46th street instead of 45th. We had been talking about possibly grabbing a piece of pizza for dinner, when I saw Ikinari. It was just like some places I'd eaten in Japan, which makes sense since it's a Japanese chain! I had the mixed steak plate (so tender!) and black pepper rice (a huge portion, with more little bits of diced steak), as well as a salad with their delectable black pepper dressing. My daughter had spicy beef curry (gravy, no chunks of meat) over rice. Both of us were delighted and full when we finished. The staff were very friendly and helpful in answering all of our questions. I bought a bottle of the dressing before we left. Hope we can visit again!

Superb Steak!

By Tracy B |

Fancied having a steak whilst visiting the city. My husband did a search on the internet and the usual steak houses came up as well as this one. After reading good reviews we decided to give it a try and were not disappointed. Don’t be put off by the exterior, it’s a great little place. It was certainly a different experience, as you go to the chef and tell him what type of steak you want and size, he then cuts and weighs it and it pay for it by the oz. You can then choose to have sweetcorn, onion, beans or broccoli with it. You take your seat and the server takes your drink order and any sides if you wish, we had mash and garlic pepper rice. The steak comes out on a sizzling plate, which was cooked to perfection and tasted fabulous. Was very reasonable for the quality and amount of food. Can definitely recommend.
