Saturday evening dinner nyc

By G C |

Wonderful dinner. Excellent service by our waiter Nally(spelling?). She made the dining experience great as well as the chef who stopped by our table to elaborate on the appetizers we selected. We had three appetizers : pork belly, octopus and the mushroom dish. All were great and personally I preferred it over my entree. I got the picanha for my main and the steak was a bit tough; however the taste of the entire dish was very good. Drink menu was good. One small knock was one person in our party ordered a non alcoholic Diet Coke which was flat. They opted not to mention it to the server but seeing how attentive they were I am sure they would have resolved the issue. Atmosphere was pleasant with most diners appearing to be among friends. Easy to have conversations as the restaurant was not too loud.

Fantastic night out!

Cory was a wonderful server! He was very personable, kind and inviting. Felt like I was with someone who I knew forever. Great recommendations and great service!

A bit of Brazil in the heart of Manhattan

By CKO696 |

I had just returned from Brazil and wanted to take my daughter out to share some of our experience. The waiter was very helpful in choosing dishes. The resulting selection was what I had enjoyed about Brazil. It was not too expensive, a nice mood, not much waiting and excellent menu items. I really recommend this restaurant.

MY WORST MEAL IN TWO MONTHS

By Harvey M |

The pleasant decor is not going to lead me to misrepresent the quality of the food I experienced. I started my meal with Shrimp Bisque Soup ($9) which I found to have, virtually, the thickness of water with no taste. Bisque soups of any kind that I have had elsewhere have been thick. My main course, Skirt Steak ($30), was served virtually at room temperature and without much flavor. It came with Black Beans, White Rice, and Sliced Potatoes, all of which were served at virtual room temperature.

Best Brazilian restaurant in NYC

By Giancarlo J |

A Restaurant that takes pride in serving and showing their guest how good Brazilian and Portuguese can be. Exploring different types of recipes that you don’t see in other Brazilian and Portuguese restaurants. Recommended for everyone who wants to try top food!

Fine restaurant close to the Rockefeller center

By Alexey S |

We came here after visiting Rockefeller center. The service was almost too friendly, with owner stopping to chat for a few minutes. Food is fine, although steak was a bit cold, and not charred enough to my taste. The bill - 47$, including glass of red wine.

A BIT OF BRAZIL IN MIDTOWN MANHATTAN

By RGinCT |

We discovered Ipanema, conveniently located in the Theater District, on a recent trip to NYC. One of us had sirloin ; the other had an excellent unusual salad entrée, hearts of palm salad topped with perfectly grilled steak. We didn’t order appetizers, but we did enjoy a classic Portuguese soup, caldo verde (potatoes, collard greens, and sausage). Full bar, nice wine list. Pleasant décor with smoked-glass mirrors. Bustling and lively, but not overpoweringly loud. Reasonably good service, although they could have used another server or two. Would like to go back and try their feijoda, a black bean stew that is the Brazilian national dish. Prices are fair, considering the quality of their offerings and their location. Bottom line: recommended.

INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCE!

By Alexandra S |

Ipanema is the real deal. I dined last night and can say everything start to finish was fantastic! I am a food influencer @foodie2shoes_ and they made every detail from the complimentary olives, to a special glass of dessert wine to pair with our tasting menu. My favorite was the Rib Chop and Burrata. Next time I will definitely bring more people so I can try even more menu items! The venue is also stunning with a clean, modern design that transports you to the elevated restaurant scene of Brazil and Portugal. Thank you Ipanema!

Fabulous Portuguese and Brazilian Food

By bluebearuk |

As someone who has visited both countries and loved the food I really wanted to try this restaurant. To start I had the mixed croquettes which came with a sweet chilli dip. For main course my partner had chicken in a white wine and garlic sauce with mushrooms and I opted for Brazil's national dish, Feijoada. This is a black bean stew with dried meat, pork, sausage and bacon. To accompany we had a large bowl of rice and a portion of spinach and my partner was also presented with a dish of black beans. The portions were enormous and a number of the other customers were leaving with doggy bags. The Feijoda was superb, equally as delicious as when I had first had it in Rio. To drink we had Sagres (Portugese) beer and a glass of excellent Portuguese white wine. Overall it was a fabulous meal, the only downside being that the first two courses had filled us up too much to be able to manage dessert which sounded fabulous.

Excellent food; Excellent service

By Randy_Gunter |

We had lunch there. I had their signature steak dish -- very good. They brought out complimentary black beans and rice. Wonderful meal. Staff very friendly and attentive.

Delicious with Flavors Dancing on my Tongue

My wife loved the coconut shrimp soup. The sausage was my favorite. Manhattan is full of wonderful restaurants and this is one of them.

Nyc day trip

Great food, service, and atmosphere. Definitely recommend this place and will come back again. We had 3 different entrees and all were fabulous!

Good for one meal a day!

By Guilherme Silva |

If you are in a forced diet mood this is the perfect place.... it takes so long to get the food that you will have time for just a meal a day. One hour after ordering 4 picanhas.... still waiting while listening to the comments of a very annoying waiter. Miss the old Ipanema... In general not worth of your time and money

Yum!

Went there in November for my birthday. Very memorable shrimp soup inside a coconut shell. Worth my time and trip. I will visit again.

Awesome.

What a find. This restaurant has been around for some time and that can result for something like a tourist trap to a place that knows what is doing. This is distinctly the later. Located in an area of several other South American restaurants, This is a mix of Brazilian, European Portuguese and Spanish. Service. I made a reservation for 2 through open table. The reservation was accounted for and we were greeted promptly; although we arrived a few minutes early were greeted immediately and seated a short time later. Water was brought soon after seating but it did take a little bit of a pregnant pause for the waiter to greet us. Once over that, waiter service, bus service etc were flawless friendly and efficient. Our waiter Evaldo was very helpful and friendly without being over bearing. He was very knowledgeable about the menu and drink menus. I even appreciated getting our glasses of wine quickly after our entrees arrived. Drinks. I took the plunge and broke away from my usual gin martini and got the Brazilian Manhattan. By the description and the amount of fruit listed I thought it might me too sweet. Nope. It was absolutely superb. The balance of flavors complimented each other perfectly. This is a bartender that really knows his/her stuff. It was worth the price tag. My wife really liked her caipirinha classica. Food. For an app I had the Abacate Recheado (a considerable mound of (mostly crab) crab salad on half an avocado). Delicious . For dinner I had the Valapa . I have not had this dish before. It was grilled shrimp and grilled monkfish in a seasoned creamy sauce with bits of pepper, smaller shrimp , other assorted veggies . The shrimp were perfectly done with a light char but the monkfish was amazing. Perfectly done , tender and also with a light char. The vegetable components of the sauce were uniform in size and just cooked so they added a bit of texture. The flavor was stupendous and went perfectly with the rose I ordered. My wife who tends to eat smaller meals, ordered the salada Carioca . A large serving of hearts of palm on a bed of crisp lettuce with sliced tomatoes and a light dressing. Delicious and light. She also had an app as her entree; The saigadinhos sortidos. Essentially four croquettes, one chicken, beef, shrimp and salt cod with a spicy sauce. Other than the chicken which was little bit dry, the rest of these were delicious . The sauce was a perfect blend of chilies and other ingredients with just a small kick of heat. Desert was simply this amazing mango mouse. A perfect light ending to a great meal. Well done. I would recommend this restaurant heartily. Great food, and great service.

Superb food and excellent service

By AmyLouTec84 |

Thank you so much for such a wonderful evening! We visited on Wednesday on the last night of our trip. I had the bitoque steak and my husband had the picanha steak- both meals were absolutely superb! This was actually my favourite meal during our 6 day stay in New York. The staff were incredibly attentive and very helpful when I couldn't decide which steak to order. I only wish we hadn't visited on our last night in New York, so that we could come again and try more of your delicious food. Thanks again! We will be recommending you to any friends that visit New York.

Enjoyable Brazilian Dinner

We had a very good pre theater dinner. Very pleasant service. I will go back. I highly recommend the sirloin stri steak.

Very nice restaurant quality food but the drinks are PRICEY

Very nice restaurant quality food but the drinks are pricey . Warm welcome, good service and not too noisy

Excellent food and service

Small and bustling restaurant, the food was fantastic provided with friendly service. Its close to all the major sites and best for us we could book a table through Opentable which helps when you are a tourist.

Great place for a meal

By lostinatlanta |

My family and friends ate dinner while we were visiting NYC for the evening. The restaurant is actually quite spacious for NYC (tables were not squeezed together) which made for a much nicer dining experience. The wait staff and hostess were great. Our party has three young children and the staff were great with helping us deciding on sharable menu items as well as being patient with our kids. Prices are upper mid range, so expected to by about $40 per person for dinner. Food was a excellent quality.

Great family-style Brasillian restaurant but get in there BEFORE or AFTER the broadway show crowds!

By Visit DrunkPhotography.com |

If you have a big party, this is the place to take them if you're in Little Brasil. The food will always amaze you and the portions will certainly keep you filled up. It's a place I like to go when I want to talk with a group of friends, or when coworkers want to meet up and have Brasilian food. There is a great variety of authentic food, on the menu, and the servers are very knowledgeable about the food and give excellent suggestions if you need them. They are very attentive there and respectful, as you'd expect in a restaurant of this class. You'll definitely pay a little extra money, but it's worth it. Make sure to get in there BEFORE all of the floods of broadway show people flood the area, or if you want a more intimate setting with a date, go AFTER the theater folks have cleared the area.

Brazilian

Polite staff. Food tastes well but no vegetables in the plate, only meat and carbs. Average. You'll ned app. $30 for a meal plus tip (15%, already calculated in).

Very good Paella

By LGude |

I ordered the paella here and it was very good. Full of seafood, chicken and sausage. The black beans were also good. I also liked the Brazilian beer.

Friendly staff, great food

By whiteyaw |

I had the Salgadinhos Sortidos for an appetizer and Bitoque for dinner and my co-worker had the Camarao Panado and all were excellent. We each had a different types of Caipirinha drinks which were good, but I'm more of a beer guy, so I could not rate this versus anything else. I don't know what is authentic Brazilian or not, but I do know what I like. The wait staff was very friendly and helpful in answering any questions, and they know how to make a good rice and beans! I don't see how anyone would be disappointed with dinning here. Be prepared to spend $50 to $60 per person, which includes tip and tax.

Excellent experience through whole meal

By Cornelia Zhao |

We ordered the grill skirt steak and breaded sirloin, both were wonderful. The servings were large. We also ordered shrimp bisque, it tastes so much better than we expected. The waiters were nice. We had a wonderful experience!

Good

By Lilianalilian |

Visited here on our first night in New York , food was good ,not great ,good hot rolls to start ,my only complaint was being cold ,I had to put my coat back on before my main arrived ,so no cozy ambiance for me on a night out dining.

great food but too slow and noisy

By Gretchen H |

The wait staff were excellent, the food was great but took a long time in coming. It was a Friday at 7pm which may be one of the busiest times. It was too noisy and loud to have a decent conversation with our dinner guests. But overall we enjoyed ourselves.

Good Brazilian steak

By vasile123 |

We liked the steaks and the rice and beans side which gives it a great Brazilian flavor. The interesting sauces bring flavor to the appetizers. We had the croquettes and the calamari. The mango sauce is interesting. The only thing I did not care for were the fried potatoes that come with the steaks.

A happy birthday

By Léna V |

My family and I had a wonderful time there for my birthday ...! The food, typically Portuguese, is delicious and the dishes are generous. I don't even know how to describe it. Same for the staff, everyone is the kind and openminded, willing to share... I loved the food, the mood and the people. I will come back next time I stop in New York, for sure!! Special thank you to Evaldo who is a really kindhearted person and who helped making my birthday so spécial !

Very nice Brazilian!!

Very nice Brazilian restaurant in Midtown! Great selection of food and very nice ambiance and service!

You wont go home hungry for sure!

By Beth C |

The hubby and I were looking for someplace with in walking distance to our hotel and found this place. We started with the Portuguese sausage and yucca, it came in a bowl pilled to the top with a mix of delicious linguisa and fried yucca with a nice spicy dipping sauce and homemade Tabasco if you needed more kick. My only complaint was the some of the yucca must have been unripe because even though they were all the same size some were harder than others. We shared the paella which was filled with muscles, clams, more sausage, chicken, shrimp, scallops and the biggest prawn you've ever seen. the flavor was good but it didn't have the crispy bottom from being cooked in the pan like a great paella does. All of their entrees come with rice and bean...even the paella hence we shared and didn't even touch the rice and beans. Don't worry all extra food went to homeless guy on our way back to the hotel. The dark beer they have on tap from either brazil or Portugal was fantastic and went great with the meal and even though it's dark in color it's light in taste and light on the carbonation as with many foreign beers. We went on a Wed. without reservations and we were seated immediately but most of the tables were full. I would go back if in the area.

CHECK YOUR BILL

By FSR3101 |

Husband and I went for dinner there last night. We had delicious food - credit where credit is due... Our bill came ($115), we handed over our Card and then were presented with a ‘please tip’ final bill. Luckily my husband spotted that the price was different: the bill - which had already been pre authorised - had jumped up to $131!!! The waiter had added on >10% and was STILL asking for a tip. The 10% wasn’t highlighted, nor asked for by me! We queried this situation with the manager and were told that this was an error. The bill was ‘refunded’ and we paid the correct amount. However, as I’m visiting the US, I had my currency on a MasterCard pre-pay debit card. It’s going to take longer than my stay in NYC for the initial amount to come back on; their error means that I - essentially - paid $250 for a meal for two..... Food was good but not worth that much!

Excellent

French family, we loved this place. Service very well, food excellent, price good for the quality, we definitely recommend this place. See you soon!

Dinner at Ipanema

By Redradr95 |

Dropped in for dinner and did not have to wait. The staff was friendly and the food was great. I've never had Brazilian food before and we were in for a treat. The beef was tender and flavorful.

Decent

By Colby R |

Had a reservation, so we were sat immediately. The food was excellent, but the service was extremely slow and inattentive. We were done with the bread before our drink orders were taken, we never got the second drinks we had ordered. It was more disappointing because the food really was delicious! Could be an amazing place, but the service needs to step up it's game.

Awesome food and great service

By Ralph N |

We stopped by on a rainy New York day for a taste of Brazilian food. The paella was amazing and my wife's steak topped with crab and shrimp was also excellent. The wine was great, the Brazilian punch very tasty. Their special chocolate dessert was excellent. This is a great location to visit.

Midtown Brazilian food OK to good, service just misses, ambience misses too. Too bad: could be a great place

Forgetable food

By DLC L |

One of the average or below average eateries catered to tourists. The meals will fill your stomachs at twice the price of a self-helped meal at Wholefood.

Great. Especially for an unplanned dinner, it surpassed my expectations.

By Fernando P |

Very nice atmosphere , friendly service and great food. What else can you ask for!?!? Oh yeah, and the caipirinhas were good too =)

Authentic and delicious!

By Laura M |

I lived in Portugal for a year and loved the food. I was hoping NYC would satisfy my longing for authentic Portuguese dishes. Ipanema delivered big-time! The Pasteis de Natas -- custard tarts took me right back to Lisbon. Warm and creamy with an unbelievably flaky crust. Our entrees were delicious! The seafood stew was light yet flavorful. Bacalhau Abras-- shredded codfish with potatoes and onions--a Portuguese classic. Octopus can be a challenging ingredient but it was perfectly prepared--tender and seasoned perfectly. Black beans and rice arrived with our entrees. Usually not worth mentioning, right? But I thoroughly enjoyed them. Even our side of vegetables was beautifully ribboned and perfectly prepared. We didn't have a chance to try the empanadas but I saw them go by and they looked and smelled fantastic! The atmosphere was refined but not at all pretentious. Portions were generous. Prices surprisingly reasonable for such a delightful meal. A memorable meal that fulfilled all my longings for Portuguese fare.

WOW! What a great place for dinner!! Go!!

So...you know how sometimes you read the trip advisor reviews and they are all good to great and you think to yourself.."No Way! Couldn't be that good!" Well..in the case of Ipanema Restaurant in NYC the great reviews are legit! Serious! Here are a few reasons why from my wife and my recent "anniversary dinner" we had there.. ~LOCATION. Super close to lots of key midtown Manhattan spots without being"touristy". ~VIBE/DECOR. Cozy..quaint..fun. There are 2 dining rooms (upstairs & down). Anywhere you sit is great-best is near window overlooking street 2nd floor. Even with a crowd it was easy to have a conversation-they even have soundproofing material under chairs/table-check it out when u go there! ~WAITSTAFF. Just right balance of engaging but not intrusive. ~FOOD. Amazing! The place is Brazilian so it's all about the beef and seafood. Get a steak if you are into beef. Mine was cooked to perfection. Lots come with it so go easy on extra side dishes. Coffee was killer-even with it being decaf(and I'm a coffee snob). Dessert was amazing!! ~NO RUSH. We stayed for quite a while as we had seen an early show on Broadway. Felt fine staying and tying up a table for a while. ~OWNER/MANAGER. A fellow came around to most all the tables and chatted. Assume he was the owner. Awesome guy. Made us feel like family. Made a big deal out of it being our anniversary. ~RESERVATIONS. Easy to make online. Bottom line...next time in midtown go to Ipanema. You can thank me later.

Wanted an adventure, something new and tasty Ipanema provided that

By DiningdevoteeFL |

Had so few clues on what Brazilian/Portuguese food. Had the seafood stew (mariscada algarvia) and grilled octopus (Polvo) Stew was tasty and filled with clams, scallops, shrimp, mussels) and the octopus was not tough but soft and tasty. Service was most attentive. While not Portuguese or Brazilian experts, we thought the meal was a nice introduction and enjoyed. We will return when back in NYC.

When in Rome - I mean NY - I mean Lisboa ou Rio

By Jamie |

This is the first higher-end Brazilian ala carte restaurant I've ever been to. We've all been to the Brazilian steak houses that have become quite popular here in the states, as well as Brazil, but this was our first time here and the first time to order awesome quality food off of a menu, rather than wait for a guy with a spear to come around and serve. From the capirinhas to the impecable service by Evaldo, we couldn't have asked for a better way to celebrate my wife's birthday while in the city. Thanks to the staff of Ipanema - muito obrigado a todos.

Disappointed

By Richard B |

I was hoping to write a good review but I found this restaurant merely average. The restaurant itself was comfortable and accommodating but my dinner was not what I expected. I started with the shrimp bisque which had several large pieces of shrimp and a little "kick" which was fine. I hardly ever order steak in a restaurant but the server suggested the Churrasco Ipanema which is steak topped with shrimp, crab meat and melted cheese. ( Also, the most expensive item on the menu). I could have done without the cheese. The steak was not as tender as I would have expected. Overall, the servers were attentive without being overbearing. I would recommend reservations on the weekends.

Loved every minute of it

By Juju Gurgel |

Located right off of west 46st street in between 5th and 6th ave, Ipanema was a fantastic option. I received such warm and amazing service there that I cant wait to go back next time I am in Manhattan. My waiter, Reinaldo, was absolutely friendly and attentive. He made me feel as if I was back in Rio de Janeiro, where people are happy and outgoing. As an appetizer you will receive small pieces of sliced bread and butter. I am a big fan of plain bread with butter so this was definitely a plus for me, not to mention that it was also delicious. I ordered the picanha plate and let me start by telling that one plate alone can easily feed two people. It came with 4 nice size pieces of sizziling picanha, white rice, black beans, french fries and fresh farofa. Everything was very delicious, however, their fries have to be the best fries I have ever eaten. It was just delicious! According to Reinaldo, the secret is on the cut, but I dont believe he would give the recipe away that easily. I was then convinced to have a piece of the famous brazilian desert “pudim” also known in america as flan. Turns out the piece was a huge piece but it was also delicious and I am so glad I had it. Very happy I went to Ipanema, great service, wonderful food and amazing staff. Will most certainly go back!

Excellent Birthday Lunch

We really enjoyed this restaurant. The service was great and the food was excellent Brazillian. It's an excellent choice for something different.

Perfect Pre-theater Dinner

By Laurie K |

After reading the mostly positive reviews, we went here for an early dinner with friends before going to the theater. The staff was very friendly and accommodating, and the restaurant was spotless and contemporary. The drinks were excellent (apple martini, caipirinha, Brazilian beer), and the steaks (especially the one with the fried garlic on top) and salmon were all cooked as ordered. The servers were attentive and we were out with enough time to get to our show on time. Excellent, reasonably priced restaurant; we will definitely return!

Great food

Excellent as always. Come here every year and have never been disappointed with the food. We had a few apps, dinner, drinks and espresso. Everything was great

Wonderful dinner at Ipanema restaurant

By Sofia Eats NYC |

Had such an amazing dinner here! We tried all their vegetarian dishes, two delicious cocktails & their dessert tasting plate & the food was pure perfection (I mean just look at the presentation 😍)!! My favorite dishes were the Angu (seasonal fried mushrooms, polenta, porcini vinaigrette & poached egg), the Abobrinha (house made burrata, fall squash, figs, brazil nut pesto & brioche), & the Salame de Chocolate dessert (w acerola sorbet, caramel cream & honeycomb)

Great Food & Friendly Atmosphere

By Robin F |

Went there for dinner with my wife. The restaurant doesn't overly impress from the facade but once inside we realized it was beautifully decorated and cozy. No reservation no problem for the friendly and accommodating hostess. The wait staff was friendly, as well as the owner who visited our table, too. The steak I had was excellent and very reasonably priced. My wife had fish which she enjoyed as well. Both were served with a side of rice and beans and mine also included sliced, fried potatoes. We will be back when we return to NYC.

Delicious with great service

By Ellen G |

Wow. We had a great dinner so we returned 2 weeks later! I enjoyed fabulous empanadas as well as chicken with fried bananas and cheese. Who would put these ingredients together? It was incredible. The sangria was also amazing. The service was friendly and terrific.

Serving Brazilian classics for 38 years!

By bassjwp |

Had an excellent meal here last night after a long Professional Development day at Columbia University followed by leading my companion on a requested tour through the human sardine can that is Rockerfeller Center and St. Patrick's Cathedral during the holidays. After pressing through that mass of humanity, it was nice to sit down in this intimate staple of Little Brazil since 1979. We were 15 minutes early for our reservation and had intended to pass the time at the bar, but much to our surprise we were seated immediately. Our friendly and knowledgeable server greeted us promptly and delivered fresh bread while he took our drink orders: a red sangria for my companion and a caipirinha for myself. At my server's suggestion, I paid the extra $4 to upgrade to their top-shelf cachaça. The sangria was reportedly delicious, fruity but not too sweet with a nice wine flavor for the base. My caipirinha was the only misstep of the night. While nothing was particularly wrong with it, it seemed to me to be little more than a glorified mojito, and certainly not worth the $16 price tag for an approximately 4 ounce serving size. Perhaps someone with a more refined cachaça palate than myself would appreciate the difference, but I could not. As we sipped our drinks, we placed our orders. My companion is gluten-free by medical necessity, so she understandably has a number if questions when ordering out. Ipanema had a number of clearly marked gluten free choices on the menu, and our server was able to answer all of her questions and make a number of suggestions. We ended up splitting a abacate recheado appetizer (half an avocado stuffed with crab meat and remoulade sauce), followed by robalo grelhado (rock salt seasoned sea bass) for her and the signature bitoque for me. The appetizer looked like elaborately plated tuna salad, but it certainly didn't taste that way! The avocado was buttery and rich, clearly served at the peak of freshness. The crab filling was packed large chunks of real crabmeat. I spooned the combination onto the warm, fresh table bread, and then slid the combination through the mango and vinaigrette swirled along the edge of the plate, creating delicious combinations of sweet and savory in each bite. My companion obviously couldn't use the bread as an appetizer delivery device, but said it was quite good just eating it with a spoon. Our entrees were served promptly upon the completion of our appetizer. The sea bass looked perfect. She said it was flaky and rich, and seasoned perfectly. The accompanying mashed potatoes and grilled vegetables also earned rave reviews. My bitoque was a bit small by my suburban standards, but normal when compared to other Manhattan establishments. The steak was seared to a perfect medium-rare as requested, and the Spanish potatoes were crisp and delicious. What made this dish stand out was the garlic beer sauce, which made everything it touched exponentially more wonderful. The fried egg on top was a medium hard, allowing a bit of yolk to leak out over the steak and potatoes, but not enough to bathe either of them in an unwanted egg wash. I devoured every bit of the entree, then used the bread to eagerly sop up the garlic beer sauce left behind. All in all, this was a wonderful meal, and truly more of a 4.5 experience thanks to the wonderful service we received. I hope this Manhattan old-timer continues to stick around to carry the torch in Little Brazil. Based on the crowd of diners and quality of the meal, I'm assuming they will be around for at least another 38 years.

Good Vibe

By Richard A |

A hidden gem for Broadway theater goers . It's a short walk from Broadway but eastward hence a bit off the beaten path for pre or post theater . Brazilian food and authentic drinks in a very friendly atmosphere where you can actually have a conversation since fairly quiet room .The steaks and sausage are quite good . They have a good selection of cocktails and a nice wine list plus plenty of wines by the glass , There are also two parking garages quite near ,

Delicious NYC Option for nice dinner

By MilwaukeeAnne |

The food was so flavorful and delicious. It came hot and well presented. Beans and rice were free and family style at every table. The steak melted in my mouth. The Brazilian old fashion was a new twist on an old favorite and worth the money. The service was awesome; water glasses never empty.

Among top 10 best restaurant meals of my life

By Claudia |

My mom and I had a fabulous meal at Ipanema. I got the picanha, and she ordered muqueca, which we ate while sipping guaraná and a delicious orange-rosemary cocktail. All the protein was cooked perfectly and of high quality, of course; what was most impressive to us about Ipanema was how the chef so finely combined flavors native to Brazil into his stunning plates. Specifically, the sauces with both the picanha and muqueca were to die for and also tasted really nice together. For dessert, we did the sampler that features everything on the menu, and it was certainly worth it. Look out for the chocolate salami and guava cake with crème fraiche, which were our favorites, but all of the desserts were excellent. We left full, happy, but not in a food coma, because the plates were so finely made. I would return again and again to this resto if I lived here! Truly memorable and unbelievably delicious, this has to be one of the best restaurant meals and experiences of my life. Obrigada !!

Nice End to an NYC Evening with Family

By Alan L |

Intimate restaurant with outstanding food and a great atmosphere. After a day taking in a show, I went with my son to Ipanema looking for authentic Brazilian cuisine reminiscent of my recent trip to Rio. I wasn't disappointed. I would recommend to anyone looking for an authentic Brazilian night out.

Order with care

By Jennifer B |

Atmosphere and service are actually, great. Ipanema is open late, so when you are wandering down W 46th street looking for Brazilian food you can end up here. I have done it twice, most recently October, 2017. The food has too much olive oil. If you love the stuff, eat here. The octopus polvo a lagareiro was just too much olive oil. I do not often write negative reviews - it seems ridiculous to comment, for example, that midtown Manhattan restaurants are 'too expensive.' so I guess I will say 'order with care; I am sorry I picked Ipanema.' The prices are around a hundred bucks with wine and tax - please remember to tip your server. Servers do not prepare the food, they just serve it.

Solid Meal...But Once Is Enough

By JauntyJournaler |

We were looking for a restaurant within walking distance to our hotel and based on the reviews we chose Ipanema. It was a solid meal, but compared to the type of cuisine I come to the city for, this meal fell a little flat and honestly I can't pin point why. Portions were good, varied menu, prices overall were typical for the city. Our appetizer of spicy sausage and Yucca was OK. Nothing to write home about. We both had the coconut shrimp over crab and avocado salad. The coconut shrimp tasted like any fried shrimp I've ever had, nothing special, but the avocado and crab salad was cold and refreshing. My husband enjoyed the entree more than I did and I think we would rate it higher than I did. We ordered a pitcher of Sangria, which was also very refreshing, but a bit pricey. The service was quick, but the waiter was a bit unfriendly and seemed annoyed. One shared appetizer, pitcher of Sangria and two entrees for $130 with tip. We had dinner the next two nights for the same price and were WOWED, so I guess while the meal was fine it wasn't a standout. The meal was fine and we were both well fed when we left but I won't be looking to go back.

Good for a family dinner

I visited with my wife and 2 daughters. We had been out shopping all day. Needed a good meal close to the hotel. The service was good, the food was good as well as the seating. Good choice for an evening meal.

Good Brazilian steakhouse

Good Brazilian steakhouse Good location, great people, very nice caipiriñas!! Almost like Rio de Janeiro!

Authentic and amazing in every way

I was reminded yet again why I love Brazil and its people so much at Ipanema. Even though it’s been a long time since I lived in Brazil, as soon as I sat at the bar and began interacting with the staff I was transported back. Everyone was just as warm and welcoming as family, as well as patient with me as I dusted off my Portuguese and spoke with the many Brazil natives working there. It felt like coming home. While the people and atmosphere were more than enough to win me over, the food and drink proved why Ipanema was the highest rated Brazilian place in Midtown. The drinks, from a passion fruit-infused Caipirinha to Chef Giancarlo’s personally concocted whiskey cocktail, did not disappoint – and even surprised me with their bright and complex flavors. But in my experience, you know if the food is authentic based on the feijoada. It was perfect. I sat in silence for quite some time while I ate, because every bite of the feijoada reminded me of so many beloved people and places. The farofa was probably the best I’d ever had because it somehow didn’t dry out the beans while still adding it’s distinct texture and flavors. The drizzle of hot sauce was the perfect blend of heat and distinctly Brazilian chili flavors. I could go on. It was just amazing. If you have room after eating any of the dinner entrees, you should really try the flight of sobremesas (desserts). Gorgeous in presentation (it felt Michelin star worthy), they were each familiar in flavor yet unique interpretations. My favorite was the bolo de rolo, but I’m also partial to guava. Honestly, you can’t go wrong with any of them. I’m definitely coming back, and I’m bringing my friends. Thank you for making this my favorite trip to NYC yet!

Wonderful service, (mostly) great food.

By LJK37 |

Great experience at a Brazilian restaurant. I saw a few reviews stating the service wasn't great, but we found them to be extremely friendly, attentive and helpful. We started with the empanadas - cheese and spinach/hearts of palm were great, beef not so much, just too plain. For my entree I ordered the Bitoque - steak cooked perfectly with a creamy, delicious beer/garlic sauce and thin crispy fried potatoes, yum! My husband ordered the grilled octopus that I had high hopes about, but was too chewy for my taste, but the flavors were there. I would definitely visit again.

Trip to NYC

By Amy |

I've been going to NYC for the past ten yrs., every time I try a new Restaurant. But this is the BEST one I ever been to.The food was excellent. Alfredo the owner greeted us like family. He was so kind and nice to me and my family. Samuel the waiter gave us everything we needed and some.I would highly recommend this Restaurant to anybody.

What a lovely dining experience

By Mandy Connell |

We ate dinner at Ipanema on a long weekend stay in NYC and could not have been happier with it. From the friendly hostess to our warm and efficient waiter, the staff was fantastic. The food was delicious (our daughter declared the mashed potatoes the best EVER) and we enjoyed every bite. Try the hot sauce SPARINGLY because it will numb your entire mouth but oh so good! We will be back on our next trip.

Lackluster Lunch

By Melody K |

Chose it for location, had out-of-town visitors squeezing in a lunch on a business trip. The lunch menu is clearly the pointy-headed stepchild to dinner. My salad was priced like any other entree, but sized like an appetizer. I asked for no sausage but had to pluck it out myself. Meanwhile, no discernible dressing. "Shrimp" can be a collective noun as well as just one but one shrimp is what I got. I will say it's pretty and calm inside and the wait staff was reasonably friendly.

In search of Portuguese and Brazilian food - found a wonderful meal and restaurant!!

By jrcasey77 |

OUTSTANDING meal!! The Cervice and octopus appetizers were wonderful. The steak was cooked perfectly and wonderfully spiced and tender. The dish with the Brazilian bean and sausage soup and collared greens was completely new to us and was wonderful! Dessert was also superb. Jonathan did an outstanding job guiding us through the menu. We'll be back!!

Big NYC Day - Wonderful Meal

By EEaton |

My wife and I were in the city for the weekend with my son and his partner for theater, museums, shopping, and wandering! At the end of a big day we wonderful meal at the Ipanema Restaurant. Nice atmosphere, friendly staff, impeccable service, great food, and reasonably priced. A perfect find!

Fantastic Brazilian Restaurant in the Heart of NYC

By Chris890 |

Honestly, the street that this restaurant is located on has some of the best Brazilian food in all of NYC. There's three restaurants which is great for customers as they all have an incentive to keep up excellent quality and customer service. But Ipanema restaurant really shines in so many different areas. First off, their Caipirinha is amazing, just like in Brazil. Second, while their menu has great food all around, where they really shine is the Bacalhau a Gomes de Sa served for Friday lunch. Hands down the best one I've ever tasted. Perhaps they can private message me the recipe? I promise I won't share :) But anything you order from the menu will taste fantastic. Combine this with some excellent and attentive customer service and you have a winning combination.

Really bad quality food. I

By Blankalv |

Really bad quality food. I can't understand the good ratings. And expensive for the kind of food they serve. Meat is frozen, pasteig is re-heated in the microwave. The restaurant was empty and we hesitated but we decided to go inside anyway because of the good ratings, bad decision. Don't go!

Hopefully not real Brazilian food

By BadgerTripper |

We were in NYC for a long weekend and decided to try Ipanema after a Sunday theater matinee. We had never eaten traditional Brazilian and are always curious to try new foods. The reviews on TripAdvisor promised good quality food. Unfortunately, the food was average and the prices were a bit steep even for the city. Our appetizer of various croquettes was good, but it stopped there. I had a chicken dish with tiny bananas and cheese on top. That's what it was. Little seasoning just the three ingredients piled together. My wife's steak with a seafood sauce was worse than what you would get in a steak place and again just ingredients combined. I wouldn't stop in again with so many other choices in the city. I do note that the waiter was attentive and helpful and tried hard to provide information. He did steer me to a good Brazilian beer that was probably the highlight of my night.

Brazil meets Portugal - tastebuds delight!

By serenity1631 |

Dining here solo, in Little Brazil, I was really looking forward to a "mash up" of a meal. Ipanema did not disappoint. I started with the Caldo Verde soup which was really tasty (altho the bread was disappointingly dull), For the entree, I chose the Mariscada (seafood stew, basically) which was chock full of shrimp, prawns, scallops, mussels and clams. It was enough for two people, certain. I was glad I hadn't ordered a side of rice and beans. I did order a side of bananas fritas, but they were so sweet (as opposed to plantains) that I saved them for dessert. Overall, a delicious meal. The only reason I give 4 stars is that the service was somewhat cold, considering the restaurant was not overly busy, and that despite asking for still water, I was given (still) water in a bottle, for which I was charged $3.00. I feel if you are going to be charged for still water, you should be advised of this.

Family owned with pride!

By creativecrew |

We weren't really sure what the menu at a Brazilian-Portuguese restaurant would serve, but the location was great so we made reservations. The woman who worked the front desk was delightful. She greeted each of our guests as we arrived and were seated at different times. Later we learned that she owns the restaurant and her husband and she have operated on the same street fir 37 years. Normally her son runs the restaurant but she was doing it for him this night. The staff was gracious and helpful. Guests enjoyed paella. I ordered sea Bass and it was different than I expected, but simple and fine. We had a lovely evening.

First night in NYC

By Mikayla M |

This was the first restaurant me and my boyfriend went to in NYC as it had many gluten free options for me. I got the steak with fries and the Brazilian cheese balls (yes they’re gluten free). The drinks are very strong so if you’re not a fan of strong drinks go for beer or wine. Will be back hopefully.

Great food

By Lisa B |

The Brazilian restaurant was a new experience for us. We asked for advice on meals and had some delicious food as well as the traditional cocktail. Great service too.

Food and drinks were incredible, service was even more amazing!

By AAL |

Our server and server assistant made the night. He was super friendly and gave us tons of great suggestions on food and drink and did not steer us wrong once! (Very tall male with dark hair and goatee). The caipirinha drinks were to die for and we tried almost all of the flavors. Manager who was working that night was great as well, all the staff were incredibly friendly and attentive. Atmosphere was great.

Delicious Food and Friendly Service

By Valerie M |

On our recent trip to NYC we were looking for a Portuguese restaurant. On our internet search we found the Ipanema - a Brazilian/Portuguese restaurant. We are so glad we went. It was the best dinner of our 6 evenings in New York. Our welcome was warm and our service was friendly. The food recommendations were outstanding. We ate upstairs, where there were a few large groups. Everyone seemed to be enjoying their food and having a good time. A group of young professionals invited my husband and me to join them for a drink. They recommended the Caipirinha - Brazil's national cocktail. It was awesome! this is a great restaurant. We highly recommend it.

Enjoyable Meal During NYC Holiday Trip

By JerseyGirl1718 |

Decided to try this restaurant during a recent NYC trip based on reviews posted-did not disappoint. I had the mixed grill and my husband had steak. Both meals were enjoyable as was the garlic shrimp appetizer. Service was a little iffy at times considering they were not busy during our visit. However, would definitely return.

Great for pre-theatre, fantastic Brazilian food and good service

By Mark W |

Okay, so I have never eaten Brazilian food before but this experience left me wanting more! We had an early reservation before the theater and the place was already busy. Highly recommend the croquettes, bitoque and the skirt steak.

Paella! Short walk from Times Square

By Mark W |

We really like this restaurant. They are open for lunch and dinner. We like to go for an early dinner before going to the theatre. The paella is fantastic - one dish will feed two people! All staff are friendly and attentive. It appears small from the outside but there is seating on the second floor as well.

THE place to go in NYC for Brazilian food!

By Kenny E |

The food, drinks, experience, atmosphere and ambiance were ALL phenomenal. We(a party of 6) had an amazing time, were well taken care of--Everton(the GM) was great and the service was top notch. Cannot wait to return there!!!!!!!! Great monetary value, portions just right and you must have the Caipirinha!!

Good food, handy location, great noise

By voyager10024 |

This Brazilian restaurant is in the theater district. I had dinner with a friend before a concert. She had soup and an appetizer and I had the feijoada (Brazilian meat and black bean stew). The food was very good, the service was prompt and efficient, and the noise made it almost impossible to talk.

A Christmas tree dinner

By James C |

After dragging my family around seeing Bryant park then Rockefeller’s center tree, we were ready to eat. I read reviews from trip advisor and they were right. Best Brazilian food in the city. For appetizers we had a variety of empanadas. They were very tasty with a crunchy crust. The fried bananas were sugar sweet. The seafood paella were delicious and plenty of seafood.I had the monkfish stew . It was great. My wife had the pan seared brazing fish . She ate the whole fish skin and all. We didn’t have dessert cause we were full. The waiters were great. They explained everything on the menu. We had a great time at Ipanema.

Pre-theater treat!

By essbeth3 |

The staff was friendly and the service was prompt. Everything we ordered was extremely tasty and well-presented. Our meal was unhurried and we were able to get to the theater in plenty of time with full stomachs and happy taste buds.

No words! Delicious Delicious Delicious!

By Lisa W |

While in NYC Friday, my husband and I chose Ipanema Restaurant for our NYC date night. We were not at all disappointed! From the fabulous Empanada appetizer to the excellent steak with shrimp, crab meat and cheese to my husbands Paella we were so satisfied and completely happy we chose this restaurant. I enjoyed my Brazilian Margarita so much that I can't even put into words how wonderful it was! I think we will be returning in the near future! EXCELLENT ! Staff was attentive and friendly and we loved the atmosphere as well. On a super snowy cold night we were warm and toasty!

Loved the paelha negra!

By Camila120428 |

I love Brazilian Food and was looking for moqueca. They don't have it but the black paella was really good. It is good for two. I had the creme brûlée for dessert and it was so creamy that I finished it all. I will be back next time with family.

Best flan I've ever had!

By VisitorfromNH |

The service was very pleasant, the food was quite good, but the best thing about this visit was watching my flan snob boyfriend (who has lived in Southern California not far from the Mexican border for the past 30 years) almost brought to tears over the flan, because it was so good. We told the waiter how wonderful the flan was, and he proceeded to tell us a secret. I won't repeat it here. If you want to try the flan, you'll have to go for yourself, and ask them how they make it!

Fabulous lunch!

By W N |

We saw the reviews on trip advisor and decided to visit on a very rainy day. Pleased to see the umbrella sacks as we entered. Orders paella and steak with cheese, shrimp, and crab, as well as a side of asparagus and chocolate brigadeirao. All were above expectations! Would totally this restaurant. Based on good taste and quality it was a great value. Tasted the brazilian punch and Portuguese red wine which were also excellent

Fantastic a must visit

By Markandnige |

Seriously this place is good. The food was amazing, I had the fried sausage which was delicious. I then had the shrimp and crab salad and although small was really filling. Do go here, don't miss out you'll regret it

Pleasantly Surprised

By LifesShort99 |

I had dinner with friends to celebrated the holidays. We had drinks and the Robalo Grelhado, vatapa, picanha, and Camarao no Coco. In other words, sea bass, monkfish w/ shrimp stew, 3 small sirloin steaks, and shrimp cooked in coconut. Family style rice and beans were also served. Everyone loved their dishes. Everything perfectly cooked and not overly salted. I made reservation and I would suggest you do the same. Thursday night and it was busy but not full. Our waiter Sam was very helpful in suggesting drinks. We can’t remember what they were but we liked them. The busboy was attentive in filling our water glasses and clearing dishes. We had a great time here. I will definitely return.

Great Brazilian/Portuguese Food

By Mariangela19802015 |

My Husband and I had dinner on Friday evening. The service was excellent, very attentive, but not overwhelming. The Salade de Polve was really well prepared. Our entrees were the Paelha and Mariscada Algarvia. Both were delicious with lots of seafood, clams, mussels, shrimp, scallops. Delish. Do not leave without enjoying the Brazilian Flan. It was the best ever. We will be returning.

First Time Visit

By Flipper1939 |

We were in NYC for 4 days with another couple and looking for something different before a show. We loved this place! The food was wonderful. My husband had the steak with a fried egg on top and he said it was delicious. My friend and I both had the seared tuna with avocado which was outstanding. The wait staff was very friendly. We would all go back in a heartbeat!

Excellent and tasty

By Arnaud28043 |

Excellent restaurant with a warm welcome from the manager. We enjoyed the different meals eaten. Service fast and efficient with good advice regarding the different plates to choose. A very good experience.

OK

By AndrewDavies |

We ordered the Churrasco Misto which was a bit disappointing, especially after the delicious Abacato Recheado (crab meat in a half avocado). It was just 4 thin slices of meat and a bit over-cooked.

Near Times square, good brasilian - Portuguese

By Pietro A |

I decided to have dinner here because it was only 10 minutes walk by times Square, and full of good reviews. I have to confirm the positive reviews: well welcomed from the staff, service quite fast. Prices in line with Manhattan for good restaurants, but the food was very good. I took the prawns as a starter and they were delicious. Portions are very large so a 2 course will be surely challenging. Recommended.

Terrible way to treat a customer

By Boarding_Group_4 |

I made an online reservation for 2 people 3 MONTHS in advance and received email confirmation with a reservation number. Two days before the scheduled visit, I saw on my calendar"Event Canceled." I called the restaurant and spoke to a host who had no interest in honoring my reservation or figuring out the problem.

Amazing Restaurant

By SArreaza |

We decided to go to Ipanema because we did not wanted to walk far from the hotel (near Times Square). We also wanted to eat meat and based on the reviews we decided to go to Ipanema. All I have to say is that we had no regret in our decision! Excellent food and dessert. Our waiter (Flavio) attended us very well and made excellent recommendations on what to order. If you want some place near time square, with good food at a great price this is the place to be...

Great Food without the New York Attitude

By MESAllentownPA |

Down to earth environment, with a no-frills menu with quality food. Great beautifully done eating space and bar. Wonderful drinks and good service, straightforward Brazilian food. We ate off the bar menu, and had a great selection. Bar team was wonderful...owner friendly and accessible.

Great Brazilian eatery

By Willem K |

Visited with colleagues. We had the croquettes for starters and I had the Brazilian national dish - beans, rice, and potatoe-meat stew. Tasted fantastic, for around $25 per main dish. Atmosphere was nice - only barely audible music in the background. Very nice and welcoming staff.

Nice Brazilian Restaurant

By davealbers |

Bigger than it looks from the outside. Clean prompt service. Delicious caipirinhas that were as you'd expect when in Brazil!

Warm, inviting and delicious

By Michael G |

Ipanema was an excellent venue for a business lunch. In addition to the warm, inviting and friendly staff the cuisine was delicious. We enjoyed several entrees including a stew that was just amazing. The restaurant is reasonably priced and has a full bar with seating. I may even have to try it out for happy hour. Highly recommend!

Great Meal & Service!

By Alvin C |

Small cozy restaurant with two floors; went for Sunday night dinner. Our server was "Gustavo" who was attentive and overall great! As an app we had "Salgadinhos Sortidos, for our main course I had the "Bitoque" and my date had the "Fraldinha Com Chimichurri", and finally our desert was one recommended by Gustavo. EVERYTHING was great; no complaints! Great price for being in NYC and also there is a parking lot directly across the street. Will definitely return.

Best paella, good service

By Christine738 |

Had looked up the restaurant and got one of the last tables without reservation. Ordered the seafood paella and it was delicious! My husband took some meat with black beans, rice and potatoes on the side. Both of our portions were huge! Service was fast and helpful. There were many other brazilian restaurants on the same street, went almost to the wrong restaurant at first. Im glad we duoble checked the name of the restaurant, could definelty eat there again!

Disappointing steak

By Alan304 |

The room is pleasant. The staff is attentive. The cocktails are good and so is the beer selection. The appetizers are good. The steak was very disappointing - a poor quality cut. I checked with others at my table who ordered steak and each person was disappointed. I will not return.

So Good/Tão Bom!

By Jan P |

We ate at Ipanema several times for lunch during a visit to Manhattan. The food was excellent as was the service. Portions were generous and price moderate. It's fairly small, but we had no wait at lunch.

Obrigado!!

By Northern_Traveler00 |

The location was good for us The menu looked good for us They had a table available at a good time for us on Saturday night So we went. OMG. This is SO good. Warm space, very friendly service, and the food and the prices were great! We shared the Linguica and Yucca appetizer with "hot sauce" (medium at best), which was delicious. She had the salt cod (SO much fish!) and I had the steak with the crabmeat and shrimp topping. For $30 it was a good sized strip steak, perfectly cooked, not a bit of fat, with a generous portion of shrimp and crab. And her cod was excellent. No room to consider dessert. Great food, great price!

Delicious brasilian food

By D K |

right choice for delicious brasilian food. I chose Feijoada completa. servise is very friendly, environment comfortable.

Authentically Brazilian!

By Arlene S |

We thoroughly enjoyed this restaurant. The Caipirinhas were excellent as was everything we ate. A great choice.

Romantic atmosphere, delicious Portuguese/Brazilian cuisine

By Teresa F |

As someone from the Açores, I always enjoy trying new Portuguese restaurants and Ipanema far exceeded my expectations. From the moment we entered, I could tell it was going to be a special experience. The decor is beautiful, inviting, and would be fantastic for a date night or family occasion. My husband and I were seated side by side at a tucked away table overlooking the bar and dining room. We started with the polvo, foie gras (with passionfruit!!!!), and porco. Every single dish blew us away! Our main dishes were the bacalhau and feijoada, the feijoada could have fed three people! The flavors of each dish are full and interesting, and the portions are generous. We didn't think we could eat anymore but managed to end with a chefs tasting of their desserts. Every single item on the menu was fantastic! The staff were all extremely attentive and they made it clear sharing this experience with their customers is their passion. I would highly recommend making this a priority while in NYC, and we can not wait to return! Thank you for a memorable evening. Teresa and Steve

Food OK. Arrogant Brazilian waiter

By RL24 |

I found the food to be OK. The variety of dishes was impressive, but the quality of food was just OK. I speak Portuguese and the Brazilian waiter would only respond in English when I spoke to him in Portuguese. A Brazilian restaurant with Brazilian waiters are ashamed to speak their own language? Really? Why work in a Brazilian restaurant then?

Great restaurant steps from Times Square

By FemaleBizTraveller91 |

The meal was excellent. One of us was on a Paleo diet. No problem, the waiter said. One didn't want red meat. Fine, said the waiter. The meal was excellent, and so was the service. It is quiet enough for conversation and not too large. And a welcome relief from the hubbub and chain fare of Times Square.

Delicious and service with a smile.

By Robert D |

Looking for a place to dine with my family in Midtown I searched Tripadvisor and came upon Ipanema. At first I was concerned since we had a vegetarian, a fish-lover, and a meat eater in our group. A quick look at the menu appeared to fit the bill. We were not disappointed. The restaurant accommodated our vegetarian by making an appetizer dish an entree. Our fish eater was completely satisfied by a grilled octopus dish which, in her words, "is the best dish I've ever had." My meat dish was an array of delicious, well-prepared meats. The meal was topped off by dessert which, difficult as it may seem, matched the quality of the main courses. The tre leche (excuse the spelling) and flan were creamy and decadent. I would definitely recommend Ipanema, but be prepared to pay a bit more for quality.

A great meal

By loepp2018 |

Good food and excellent service. Brazilian and Portuguese dishes that you may not find elsewhere. For a real treat order the Camarao no coco, shrimp in an amazing coconut sauce. Don't be surprised when your dinner arrives in a cooked, green coconut.

Solid! Worthy of its high reviews.

By floshel |

Located in Little Brazil on 46th St., we had been here several times and never disappointed. Service by Gustavo is excellent, food is traditionally Brazilian, not the churriscaria kind. Delicious. Seafood, beef, fish, lots of choices. We had a play to go to and we were in and out with plenty of time.

Delicious

By AviMom2 |

Have visited this restaurant a few times throughout the past twenty years. This is my first since they relocated a few doors down. We were excited to return and it did not disappoint. First off, I suggest a reservation as they're always busy. Our server was friendly and prompt. The food was tasty, although my daughter's steak was slightly over cooked. The paella was as delicious as ever. Wish they didn't get rid of the yucca fries and the potatoes balls they used to serve. They havze a delicious Brazilian soda, which is a citrusy ginger ale type drink. It is refreshing and not overly sweet. In our opinion, this restaurant was fair price for a place in the city. Our total for three entrees was $120.

Excellent Dinner Choice

By DonR_09 |

If you are in the mood to try Brazilian dinner, Ipanema is an excellent choice. We arrived without reservations. The manager offered us immediate seating the bar area. He ended up waiting on our table for most of the evening. We decided to share a starter (octopus), main course (steak) and desert (flan). All three choices were super. We especially enjoyed the octopus.

Theater District Gem!

By Fresser2014 |

Early dinner after a matinee was a treat! Excellent, attentive service and an interesting, delicious menu made for a lovely evening.

The best Brazilian place in NYC

By Anna B |

Absolutely incredible dining experience here! The elevated and very creative food, excellent cocktails! The whole ambiance is very cozy and romantic, though you can have your special group celebration here as well. The service is super friendly and waitstaff is knowledgeable and passionate about the cuisine. Highly recommend to visit Ipanema and just let yourself enjoy every moment here. P.S. don’t skip desserts! They are divine here!

One of many choices in Little Brazil

By David P |

After having made reservations for two on a Saturday night, a friend was available to join us at the last minute. Nonetheless, when we arrived at Ipanema the hostess was able to seat all three of quickly. We ordered a pitcher of white wine sangria which was refreshing and not syrupy as it sometimes can be. Our waiter was prompt, courteous and helpful with the menu. The Salgadinhos Sortidos—a Brazilian and Portuguese take on empanadas—were simple, though the accompanying Tabasco dipping sauce added some flavor. I had Mariscada Algarvia which was a beautifully presented stew with lots of seafood but the broth it was served in was rather bland. Our friend ate most of his Frango com Banana e Queijo (grilled chicken tips with fried bananas and melted cheese) but chose not to take home his leftovers. The chocolate and caramel flans we shared for dessert were good, as was the coffee. For the three of us, the bill came to about $125 not including a tip. Personally, I would try some different Brazilian restaurants in the area before returning here.

Good Food, Service, Ambiance, and Location

By kjtripper |

We were stuck in stop and go I-95 traffic on the way to Maine and had enough slow driving when we bailed out at Norwalk hoping for a decent meal. We walked the street looking for dinner at 5PM when we came upon Ipanema. We were seated outside and had a hard time deciding what to order due to everything looking good. I had the monkfish and shrimp stew which was delicious. We'll definitely keep Ipanema in mind next time we drive up to Maine.

top service

By rzil16 |

Spent my birthday with my wife in NYC with reservations at Ipanema, greeted with friendly and attentive service offering great recommendations off the menu. From appetizers, calamari and croquettes with incredible dipping sauce to the main course meals of steak and grilled salmon, simply delicious. Ending our meal with a surprise of creme brulee brought out by the waiter as a present to me. The restaurant was clean, with a lovely ambiance and just like the Brazilian culture, full of friendly warmth.

Underwhelming quality at an overwhelming price

By Stefanie S |

We chose this restaurant for lunch based on the many rave reviews here on Tripadvisor and the proximity to our hotel. Unfortunately, this restaurant fell short of our expectations. We ordered appetizers with an entree to share and the quality was below what we expected, not to mention the quantity for the price ($88 + 20% tip for 2 appetizers and 1 entree one beer and 2 soft drinks is a bit steep, even for NYC). The service we received from the staff was subpar as well (they did not deserve the 20% tip). We were never asked if everything was ok, or offered more bread or drinks, water was never topped off. It felt like we were just tourist that can be scr**** over. We have been to NYC several times, eaten at amazing restaurants that weren’t much more expensive. Do yourself a favour and stay away from this restaurant.

Excellent dinner with co-workers

By Slava K |

I visited this restaurant with my co-workers for dinner. We received a very warm welcome from a manager, and got promptly seated. Our waited explained to us the specials and when we told him that some of us were gluten intolerant , he was able to highlight from the menu what items were safe to eat. The food, the drinks and the service were all excellent, and we are already thinking about visiting this place again in the future.

Not worth going

By RiK |

I don't understand the good reviews here.. There was noone else in the restaurant when I first arrived for lunch and the service was still horrible. I had trouble getting anyone's attention to order things, and when I did they just stared at me blankly and talked to each other in a different language.. and they never gave me what I kept trying to ask for. I'm not sure what was going on here. For our lunch we only ordered appetizers because I was worried about timing. I told the waiter I only have an hour and he said it'd be no problem. However we had to ask for the check 5 times to get it. Eventually we just stood at the front until someone helped us because we had to go and they we're moving like snails. The food itself also wasn't good.. I had an appetizer salad which was just plain shredded, undressed lettuce. I added shrimp for $7 and it only included 2 pieces. All in all a pretty ridiculous experience.

Delightful Gem!!!!

I hadn't been here in 6 years -- but took a friend & crossed my fingers that it was as good as I remembered--- Out of the park!!!! Food was outstanding and service was even better--- our waiter was first class! As a Canadian who is now reluctant to visit US-- our experience here told me that all is not lost !

Fabulous

By Maria A |

Went to Ipanema and had a truly great dinner. The cuisine is quite authentic (I am first generation Portuguese/Brazilian and grew up eating this type of food). the ambience was lovely and our waiter was attentive without being "over hovering". i would highly recommend this restaurant!

Nice Brazilian place

By Sofiya K |

Enjoyed the flavors of Brazil, reminded of our trip to Rio de Janeiro and having feijoada in Ipanema :)

Excellent food .... price worth it

By annielithon234 |

Excellent food at great price point for the area. It was a month or two back so I forget the exact dish but the steak was right on the money. I'll add that the wait staff was young but excellent and atmosphere wise Ipanema's was excellent for conversation with the table which was precisely what we needed. I highly recommend and will return next time I'm pulling through my old home town.

An unforgettable Brazilian experience

By Niu Raza |

Both Food and drinks were amazing! Every dish also came with an explanation from our waitress and the chef came out to make sure we had everything we need. The service was above and beyond. I dropped my napkin mid dinner and didn’t realize it and our server saw that and gave me a new one right away. There was barely a wait between our courses and the atmosphere was great. I love low light environment and quieter music so I can talk to my date. It’s definitely a great space to catch up, Business wine and dine, date night for any occasions, special occasions or to celebrate being alive. It’s definitely a must try! The interior of the restaurant also feels like you are traveling somewhere warm, the plants and flower details on the ceiling! I love that everything was meant for us to get a glimpse of Brazil and will definitely come back!

Great Brazilian fare!

By Patricia K |

A lovely restaurant with delicious Brazilian food including vatapa and feijoada! A caipirinha is an absolute must before dinner; they're beautifully made and yummy! Service was good and a quiet, lovely atmosphere. The restaurant is in the theater district so go there before a show!

Authentic Brazilian food, our comfort food place

Been going here the last 7 years and still do so. Their food is very good, warm and friendly service. I love the Bitoque and have it each time. A must visit when in midtown in the little Brazil area on 46th street between 5th and 6th avenue.

This sliver of a restaurant on 46th, proximate to all major theaters, is a powerhouse for authentic Brazilian cooking. The management is so welcoming, and the infusion of genuine hospitality infuses the whole dinner experience with a joy that is often missing in the pre-theater world of table turning. It is a truly charming place that we look forward to visiting again in the future. The experience could not have been more positive.

Great for business lunch.

By JenHen2003 |

I had tried the restaurant across the street about a year earlier on a separate business trip, and thought I would spread the love when taking a business colleague to lunch. Both are excellent. They were able to seat us quickly for lunch. We tried the croquetas start -- shrimp was my favorite. I had the dish pictured in the profile. It was very tasty. My colleague had a mango chicken dish, I believe. Both of us really enjoyed our meal. I can't really say which one I like better, so I guess I'll just have to try them both again. Yum.

Good Place, Not a Bargain, but this is NYC

By Ralph M |

After looking at some reviews, and not having eaten much Brazilian food for decades, we decided to visit this restaurant on a day trip to NYC. It deserves the good ratings it gets for food and service, and the ambience is pretty nice (lots of picture of Pele). Value? Well, for three of us dinner was a bit above $200 - pricey for most of the country but not out of line for fairly fine dining in NYC. I had the Feijoada, which was quite tasty, while companions had seafood dishes which they also enjoyed. I had two caiperinhas with dinner, one was coconut, both were good. In all, I'd have to recommend this place, provided you are not looking for a bargain.

Will be back soon!

Great food and ambiance! Fine Brazilian cuisine, expect to be impressed. Be sure to try the caipirinha. Look forward to my next meal.

Excellent food & service

By Jen V |

So happy to find this gem. We loved the depth of flavor in the food. You can taste the attention to details in bringing Brazilian culture to the food. Service was excellent, but I don't recall servers sharing their names. We will be back!

First Brazilian dish in NYC and certainly not the last one

By Foodilicious |

Don’t be fooled by the picture wich is not my best but this dish was just perfection. It’s a Brazilian style steak , with a garlic sauce - I could have eaten the sauce alone with a spoon that’s how great it was - and fries potatoes. On the side you also get rice and black beans. I didn’t speak for about 20 Minutes because all I wanted to do was eat that amazing dish. I can’t wait to go back and if all the dishes are like that in Brazil then I can’t wait to go to Brazil.

Great Steak

By Peggy Roy J |

We were a group of 6 for dinner. We had the fried calamari which was good. 4 of us had the garlic steak which we all enjoyed. The salmon was moist and very flavorful.

Heavily recommended. On par with restaurants in the Ironbound Section of Newark

By bwco |

Living in New Jersey, I have gotten used to going to the Ironbound section of Newark and stopping by the Portuguese and Brazilian restaurants. Its an area where literally its hard to get a bad meal. This restaurant is on par with the best restaurants in that area. The restaurant was quiet, where you could actually talk to your spouse without yelling. The service was great and food was great, (just beware of the big portions). My wife had shrimp that was served in a coconut and I had the feijoada, which is a stew with beans, sausage, pork and bacon. If you are in the Times Square area and have never had Portuguese or Brazilian food, this is a great place to try it out. This was the second time this year that we have been here and we will be back again.

Dinner with long lost friends

By lbourinaris |

What a great warm environment to have this fabulous dinner with friends that haven’t seen each other in over 20 years! Excellent food, Service & wonderful Barmaid. A very cozy place with truly delicious food seasoned perfectly and great ambiance. I highly recommend this restaurant. Authentic Brazilian food.

Delicious

Great food, good atmosphere and excellent service. Our waitress stayed on top of everything and made sure we had anything we needed. I would definitely recommend this restaurant if you get a chance to visit.

Excellent food & service!

By christine01232015 |

We dined here on New Year's Eve. The food was wonderful, as was the service. It is reasonably priced. Best flan I ever had! Plan to go back the next time we are in NY!

Impeccable Service

By Kel |

Comfortable and cozy for a party of two. Wine was great, as was the Abacate Recheado (avocado & lump crab) appetizer. My daughter had the Bacalhau A Bras (Cod), and I had chicken (Frango Grelhado). We enjoyed both but it was the kind, fast and great service that will bring us back.

Best Brazilian food in NYC!

By Simon2RTW |

We were recommended this restaurant when staying at Carvi Hotel (great small hotel). We have spent many months in Brazil and must say this is some of the best Brazilian food we have had outside of the country itself. The quality and presentation of the food was wonderful. The service provided by our server Fabio, and the general manager, Everton, was above and beyond and we were made to feel very welcome and comfortable. The Caipirinha was the best tasting we've had since being in Brazil ...and we've tried and tasted many! We have already been telling our friends that they must go when in NYC!

Burst of flavors. Go. You won’t regret it.

By MerlineB |

Make reservations else it’ll be a wait esp on the weekend. We went at 5:45pm on Sat, and had plenty of time to walk to a broadway show at 8pm. Our waiter Gustav made our experience wonderful with suggestions that were spot on. Can’t go wrong with caipirinha - classic and passion fruit were strong and delicious. Try the calamari and pasteis for apps. For entree don’t overlook the bitoque (steak with garlic sauce and a fried egg). And ask for the spicy sauce called malagita I think (little red habaneros). Enjoy!

Visit to a new city

By LoriO45992 |

Wonderful food with awesome service. My husbands favorite were the empanadas. We came here three times on our five day trip to New York City 😝

Yummy!

By Jeeleigh |

Didn’t have a reservation but was seated promptly. The staff is so welcoming and hospitable. I had a crepa (Brazilian beer) and the octopus. So flavorful so yummy. I haven’t had octopus in ages. I’m happy I had it here. Definitely recommend.

Forced to give a TIP of 20%

By Rodrigo D |

At first the attendent said the kitchen was closing in 5 min, and so we had to order in a hurry, in 5 mins. The food was ok, service was ok too, however when I got the check the TIP of 20% was already included, and I thought better not more than 18%, and i asked for it. Then the waiter and others came saying that tip of 20% is charged when there is more than 8 people, and the menu had this advertisement. Even complaining that i am supposed to give it as gratuity they claimed saying it was in the menu, and i had to. My group was 5 adults 3 kids, being one of them a baby. I got very disappointed with such treatment, and to not get stressed I payed the 20% tip, but I do not recommend a place like this for anybody. The diference btw 18 to 20% was just 1 or 2 dollars, such an expensive review.

Fantastic Brazilian food!

By CMarilia |

I have been here for a company party and couples dinner. The people who work there are very nice and the food is amazing! As a Brazilian, I totally recommend this place for any occasion. All the caipirinhas are good but if you would like to enjoy a strong and different taste, you should tru with Amazonas.

Very Pleasantly surprised

By JCfromCherokee |

Our first try for Brazillian/Portuguese food. Paella was as fine as i’ve had anywhere. Salmon Grelhado had a passion fruit sauce that made the dish. End with Pudim De Leite - like a crem brule without the cup. AND if you’re lucky enough to get this guy as your waiter, he’ll make sure your meal is memorable.

Very disrespectful, fraud payment system, horrible experience

By rahphaferreyra |

I was on the line waiting for a table and the waiter suggest me and my wife to sit a few minutes on the bar while waiting for a table for two. I had 2 girls behind me as well without reservation and imagine my face when I saw they talking a lot with the waiter (I realized they were friends) and she gave them a table in first place. Just stayed because of my wife. Food is regular. and the payment system is kind of a fraud. They add the tip on the final receipt without asking you they wrote "Gratuity 15%" but also add the regular suggested tips. Horrible experience

Good Theatre Dinner Midtown with Flavor

By Douglas T |

Christmas Eve dinner for five. Friendly servers and really good food. I wouldn't say gourmet fare, but each dish was good. I am not a steak house fan, but they do have good steak and chicken and even salads. We took a lot home and enjoyed it again.

Sooooo delicious

By Curiosity283361 |

Unbelievable. An authentic, upscale Portuguese/Brazilian restaurant. The dishes are so interesting. Everything on the menu is to die for. Even the presentation is perfection. You could make a whole meal out of the fabulous appetizers. The burrata, pork belly, and mushroom polenta were among my favorites. And the desserts! Heaven. Just heaven. I went with several girlfriends, but it’d be a great spot for date night, a business gathering, anything.

Delicious but Tough Beef and Over Cooked Empanadas

By SCBlossom |

Many favorites we enjoyed in Rio with good service. The Caipirinhas were perfect as was the octopus salad but the empanadas were overcooked. We shared a very good mixed grill although the beef was tough, which came with potato chips and black beans with rice. We added delicious fried bananas. The Spanish Temparanirillo (?sp?) wine was excellent. Service was good. It is in the Little Brazil area.

Drenched with dirty hvac water

By travelerhn23 |

I would give a 0 rating if I could. This review is based on experience only since none of us ate the food. After we received our drinks 2 friends went out for a smoke break, a bucket of dirty hvac water fell from the ceiling vent and came crashing down on our table. The entire table was soaked with dirty water. The birthday boy who sat next to the vent was drenched. Not splashed but drenched from head to toe! Luckily 1 of our friend went out for a smoke because it could have been serious. His seat was directly below the vent. Imagine the impact from the bucket of water. The person who left the bucket there should be fired. My friend could have been seriously hurt. The worst part was the lack of concern from the staff. Not one person asked if we were ok. No one brought paper towels. Where did the staff go? After sitting there for a few minutes we decided to leave. As we were leaving none of the staff said anything to us. We were still in shock after we left the restaurant. After a few minutes the manager came outside to apologize to us and wanted to comp our meal. However it was too little too late. Birthday boy was soaked and most of us had dirty water on our clothes, purse, and hair. We will never go back to this restaurant.

Unique dining experience

By barbntim2016 |

Picked this restaurant based on reviews and proximity to Grand Central Station. It did not disappoint. This is NOT a touristy Brazilian steakhouse. The menu was quite curated, and our server did a great job of explaining the ingredients we weren't familiar with and suggesting dishes we might have overlooked. Cocktails were interestingly complex. The tartare appetizer was melt-in-your mouth delicious. My husband had the octopus appetizer as his entree and the portion size was enough for him. I had the duck entree - another treat. The cumaru creme dessert was so tasty and light. Atmosphere was upscale and chic. Do not pass this one up.

Enjoyed our dinner

By melanie f |

We were a table of 10 and were able to get a table with only a 5 minute wait. Service was attentive but very quick to clean up table. Otherwise, enjoyed each of our meals. Children were able to split meals. I had the Bitoque which was delicious and I’d recommend.

Delicious

We went there to watch’s the Brazilian game at the World Cup. Amazing food, very Brazilian food, and service..

Nice place, OK food, pricy

By Raanan T |

The restaurant looks really nice and service is great. Great for business meeting or just experience Brazilian food. 50$ for average meal, first and main courses, no white or drinks

Fantastic food and attentive service in a jovial atmosphere

By motraveler90 |

Went to Ipanema a bit after 8 PM on a Wednesday without a reservation, after the pre-theater crowd left, and didn't have to wait for a party of 3. We were warmly greeted by all employees, from those providing water to waitstaff, and service was attentive but not rushed throughout our dinner. Questions were happily answered as well. The atmosphere is nice, but don't expect a quiet, romantic setting; noise levels were moderate, with customers comfortable having a good time in a few larger groups (6-8). We ordered an appetizer, 3 entrees, 2 drinks, and a shared dessert and had SO much food; we took extra home on two of the entrees. Of our 3 ordered, we absolutely loved the coconut shrimp (with a fantastic presentation in a coconut!) and the salmon; the bitoque steak was nicely prepared as asked, but the cut was a bit chewy. Drink focus was rum-based and fruity, which was great for me. Shared dessert of three mini cinnamon custards was a nice ending, and appetizer sampler of assorted croquettes was nice as well. Really lovely food for cuisine I wasn't familiar with. If this is typical for Brazilian food, I'm all in!

Great food and atmosphere!

By Peregrine426 |

Turns out the owner of Ipanema was also the owner of the Brazilian Pavilion on 53rd street…our favorite Brazilian restaurant back in the 1980’s. The excellence continues. Great caipirinha’s, steaks, rice and black beans. Service was friendly. What’s not to like!

A Brazilian place with Manhattan flavor.

By Alena V |

Came here for dinner with my colleagues. The restaurant is offering the usual Brazilian Rodizio as well as a la carte menu. I don't know if I am biased because of other place I find more appropriate for the Rodizio experience then Ipanema, but their A la carte menu is great. The service is very attentive and caters to your every need but not overbearing like some of the other places. The food keeps up with the location of the restaurant just off the 5th avenue and tries to make the patron enjoy every delicious bite and for the most part they succeed. I think it would be a great place to come and just have a friendly meal but for the Rodizio I'd go some other places.

BEST RESTAURANT IN NY

By Hungry chicc |

We like our food and booked all our restaurants ahead of coming ... we found Ipanema via instagram and what a piece of gold we found. It was a lovely vibe, stunning food, lovely attentive staff, beautiful food and drinks. Best meal we had all week. Treaty evening but well worth the money and much better food than other restaurants we paid more for

Wow Wow Wow

By uvmgabe27 |

We've visited with a group of friends twice now, each time ordering all of the cold and hot appetizers. I'm glad that I got to taste everything because all of the options are outstanding. Some of my personal favorites are the octopus- perfectly cooked and oh so tasty. Other standouts are the tartare, mussels, burrata and ceviche. The mains menu is also wonderful. My personal favorite is the bitoque but I've gotten to taste the cod and the duck, both of which I'd order. The staff was super fun and helpful and the ambiance is incredible. The bar is built around a beautiful green space which helps transport you to another place. Delicious drinks and desserts are just the cherry on top. Don't miss out on this gem!!

A Special Treat

By barbra m |

We went to this restaurant following a broadway performance....It is very closeby and in easy walking distance. The food was delicious, and ample servings... Service very professional. The atmosphere was not romantic, but adequate with enough distance to move around comfortably...I had churrasco oswaldo arancha which was surperb, and my husband the brazilian black bean stew.... Everything being served looked delicious, and with the waiters help, have my next visits orders lined up!. We will definitely return!

Great Quality & Quantity

By damg |

Very happy with dinner here two nights ago. Ipanema is in the theater district so it's a wonderful place for a pre-theater dinner, nicely designed and comfortable. The service was outstanding -- friendly & helpful. The paella was filled with seafood, chicken and chorizo and was perfectly seasoned. Good sangria (not great). The flan was enough to serve three people. We'll definitely go back again.
