A Quick Visit to Italy on the Upper East Side

By happytrails555 |

I have walked past the Isle of Capri for a long time. It looked too quiet. Finally, I had dinner there. Why did I wait so long and deny myself this experience??? It is one of the most authentic Italian restaurants I have ever eaten in outside of Italy. The menu gives the diner lots of choices for traditional and authentic Italian food. One friend had chicken parm, and it was the size of the table. Delicious! Another had the spaghetti and meatballs, and loved it. I had veal piccata and it was superb! However, as good as the food is, and moderate for the Upper East Side, the charm of the waitstaff and the owner makes this an experience not to be missed. The desserts were excellent, and we were served lemoncello. This experience was on a par with the best meals I've had in Rome. I'll definitely return and bring friends with me. The Isle of Capri and its owner, Jane, make this place like dinner at your Italian grandmother's--if she was an excellent cook! Bravo!

Cozy Italian

By Susan R |

Vegetarian and Gluten free available and wait staff is knowledgeable and helpful in meal prep explanation. Menu options are varied, something for every taste. Food delicious and well presented. Complimentary bruschetta and basket of bread and breadsticks provided. Tables are a little tight together, but service is pleasant and not rushed. Prices are reasonable, good wine selection with wide price ranges available. . Would visit again.

So good!

This place is top notch from the excellent care and attention from their servers to the unbeatable dishes that taste homemade. They make you feel like old friends whom they are just so excited came by to visit. Also get the homemade linguine- I ate all of it even though I couldn't eat another bite.

Amazing authentic Italian Dishes

Amazing authentic Italian food on the Upper East Side. If you’re craving that authentic Italian experience, it is not to be missed.

Delicious meal

By Ratpack71 |

Spent all day at the PGA golf tournament with my son fin Long Island - got back to the city - Isle of Capri was recommended to us - unfortunately we did not have reservations so we ordered to go. While there we struck up a conversation with the owners who are sweethearts. They offered us wine and water while we waited. We took our order home. It was delicious. Would definitely return but next time will make a reservation.

Slow, slow service

By PaulFarace |

A 20 minute wait for a table on a Monday, when the dining room wasn't packed. Followed by a 45 minute wait for the food. Food was good if a bit over priced. Several appetizers and deserts we wanted were 86 ( not available ). Staff was attentive.

Great time

By HAPPYTRAVELING45 |

Last night we dined at Isle of Capri NYC . This was our first time there and won't be our last. The food was amazing. all 4 of us had completely different meals and each was better than the other. We actually ate off each others dishes. The only downside was the seating is tight, but real estate in NYC is $$$$ so I understand, The décor is very Italian. I ate the Spaghetti Carbonara... AMAZING. and the waiter actually told me how they prepare it so I could make it the same way at home. When the meal was done the came to the table with a plate of Biscotti and cookie , Lemoncello or Grappa after dinner drink. all on the house.

Never knew about this place

Surprise surprise, thought it was an old restaurant, out of date and on the way out! I was invited to dinner there and what a surprise. Service was great, food was very good and it was a great neighborhood prize

Wonderful UES Italian Staple

By NYCenteroftheUniverse |

Isle of Capri An established, great, family owned, Italian restaurant with a very, VERY loyal following. The tuxedoed waiters serve yummy Italian staples in old world surroundings. You are greeted with fresh bruschetta and attentive, warm, professional service. The starters are very good, especially the Caprese salad, grilled vegetable salad or half orders of linguini and clam sauce (wow!) or linguini marinara. The calamari is a tender and delicious entree, prepared in a delicate tomato sauce. The veal with peppers and mushrooms in a light tomato sauce is exceptionally tender, flavorful and my favorite item on the menu. (The veal entrees here are superb, tender and delicious.) The portions are enormous and enough for two meals. The staff is very appreciative for your patronage and so pleasant. Every meal is concluded with complimentary cookies. We love Isle of Capri for its food, service and old style charm that is underscored by the family owned devotion to this thriving, wonderful, UES Italian staple.

Atmosphere, food and service = fantastic!

Great little place in traditional Little Italy on Mulberry.... The service was fantastic, food was very good and the atmosphere was traditional.

Excellent!

This is a regular stop for us every time we are in the area. We made reservations ahead of time as always, which I highly recommend, Unfortunately when we arrived, they were going to seat us at table located in one of the busiest parts of the restaurant, after some consideration they eventually sat us at the same table we always sit at which is much more intimate and quiet. We were fortunate enough to have Armando as our server, he is absolutely wonderful and literally takes care of everything. Of course we started with a bottle of 2004 Vigna dogarina, the fresh bruschetta, accompanied by a plate of fresh olives and parmesan cheese. The freshly baked bread is typically brought to the table as well, I prefer it eaten with dinner. I have had the lasagna before, it is absolutely phenomenal and I just had to have it again, so that is what I ordered. The entrees were brought out as if they were right out of the oven, hot and fresh, so I prefer to let it sit while I attend to the wine bottle. The lasagna definitely did not disappoint, all fresh ingredients with a wonderful sauce, I was exceptionally pleased as always. Unfortunately we did not have much time for dessert so we enjoyed a limoncello and a nice selection of Italian cookies prior to leaving for the show. Armando was a wonderful host, Isle of Capri does not disappoint! Cheers!

Discrimination by Manager

By ServiceDog2014 |

I’ve been here several times but this time the uninformed manager made a decision to not permit me to be seated with my service dog. It’s too bad because this is a popular neighborhood place where I frequently meet friends Here for dinner but no more. Rude and unpleasant not to mention a manager who should not b in that position. Very discriminatory behavior on her part. Others witnessed it and said they would not return either. Food is mediocre but this is about managerial staff. O excuse for this degree of arrogance, ignorance and verbal abuse.

Reliable.

By Bostonian80 |

We visited spontaneously, and were refused seating in the main dining room--had to sit in colder, outer perimeter. The reason given was that the inner tables were reserved. Of course, 2 hours later, there was no one there. Asked for wine list twice, water once. Wait staff distracted. Lentil soup watery but had flavor. Certainly not the best. Bolognese subtle and good. Veal scallopini salty. Chianti (Antinori) acceptable. Based on the recent reviews I thought we'd be more pleased. I would most easily describe this as "average."

East Side Italian Bistro

By Nooney2013 |

On a business trip to NYC, a large, hungry group of us ( 9) looking for lunch on the east side dropped into this small, intimate Italian bistro - fully expecting to be disappointed. We were amazed and surprised. The proprietor, Vincenzo Lamanna, immediately set up a large table , got everyone comfortably seated, and made us welcome. The shop was busy, but not frantic, and our very professional wait staff brought us crusty bread, warm from the oven, chunks of imported cheese and olives while we made our choices. What was going to be a quick stop to refuel evolved into a leisurely and delicious luncheon. I had homemade agnolotti with pink vodka sauce - spectacular ! Other people had pasta dishes, and some had veal and beef, and we all enjoyed our meals. With a few bottles of pinot grigio and a wonderful Charels Krug pinot noir,( 2013), we all we're relaxed and able to unwind from a frantic morning. The proprietor insisted we try, gratis, his imported Lemoncella, homemade Pear Grappa and Raspberry cordial, as well as a tray of fresh Italian cookies. Then he agreed to prepare separate checks - for 9 people with 9 expense accounts ! That's almost unheard of - great, friednly service and true hospitality .Make sure you enjoy this when in NYC.

Loved it!

By marysteuber |

My husband and I travel to NYC several times a year for antique shows and shopping. Usually we are not in this area around dinnertime but every time we've passed this restaurant via cab or bus I kept saying next time we're close by let's check it out. Checked out the menu online and the reviews here and it looked like we'd be happy. So glad we went! Made a reservation early in the week for Saturday, we usually eat early and were able to get a table. Maybe because it was just after 5, we were seated at a nice four-top on the porch, a real bonus since we're both tall and extra legroom in any NYC restaurant is appreciated. Excellent service. Hub had his favorite....linguine de mare, a very large portion of shrimp, clams, calamari and octopus in a light tomato sauce. I had Veal Saltimbocca (seems like not too many Italian restaurants make this anymore), a generous portion of fork-tender veal medallions topped with prosciutto over a big bed of delicious sautéed spinach with green beans and little potato slices on the side. I don't usually have an appetizer but my hub was a little hungry so we shared the Caesar salad for two, it was tasty but a small portion, was considering the antipasto plate but wasn't sure if it was enough for two. I had a glass of wine, initially I thought the wine-per-glass prices were a bit stiff but the pour was very generous and the wine was nice. We had no room for dessert, but our waiter brought us a little plate of cookies. Thought the prices were fair and reasonable for NYC, service was great, greatly appreciated extra table room and loved that our dinners were piping hot.....big pet peeve for me when hot food is not hot. I look forward to going back!

Always fabulous!!

By 234Cookie |

I grew up only blocks away from this wonderful restaurant. Its one of the few landmarks of my childhood that still exists!! Whenever I go up to NYC visiting family and friends, we always have a wonderful dinner here!! Very cozy, family atmosphere, and the food is fabulous!! They always give you either lemon cello or the fraganoli liqueur after dinner. A very nice touch. I always recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting NYC!!

Fabulous every time

By Pam M |

This is the restaurant we go to atleast once a month. The food is always great and the staff are wonderful . We went to a different restaurant yesterday and I was so sorry. I will be going again on August 26th. I travel to New York because I see a Dr there. You must go you will not be sorry it is FABULOUS!!!!!!!

Disappointing Old Favorite

By hamptonsnydiner |

Been a go to restaurant for 25+ years until today. Quiet 5pm dinner started with the most generic Caeser Salad followed by zero service and 2 requests for our Pasta over 35 minutes. The waiter's response each time was "they're making it". Really, 35 minutes?? When the hostess asked if there's a problem and we told her the situation, the same waiter stated "you have been here only a few minutes". We offered to pay for the salad but the waiter told us we can leave. Stay Away, Service was Horrible!

Charming atmosphere with good Italian home cooking

By _ldwooly |

This was the first restaurant we ate at in our first visit to New York City, and it set the bar for our trip. We sat in a very charming alcove off to the side with a window to people watch. Our server was very attentive and very nice, I wish I remembered his name! We had the breaded veal and the angel hair with vegetables. The veal was honestly one of the very best I have ever had in my 55 years! Huge portions too, and a basket of fresh bread..... thank you for such a nice introduction to NYC!

Wonderful place to celebrate one's birthday

By Susie202 |

I knew of the restaurant as being Montgomery Clift's favorite place in NYC so I went there to celebrate my birthday with a group of 6. Wonderful service, wonderful food and ambience although very crowded for a Thursday night. I thoroughly enjoyed it and will go back the next time I am in NY.

Good local restaurant

By anorth52 |

Classic New York neighborhood Italian restaurant. The service was excellent and the food was very good. Good choice of reasonably priced wine.

Not the best

By arubalad |

We were a party of four. We were disappointed with the service. Staff reached over the table to both serve and remove plates. Not once did they go around the table. Apparently to insure that the patrons did not stay to late, the air-conditioning was either drastically lowered or turned off. Food was at best ok. Soft shell crab dish came out warm, not hot. Clam appetizers were tasty but small and only a small amount. Lasagna dishes were decent. Experience was not the best.

Authentic in NYC

By sandyconcrete |

Really good food and good service. Depending on your order, you might find yourself waiting 30+ minutes for a dish, but it is well worth it! Make sure you have reservations if you're going on the weekend. The gnocchi is delicious, the chicken dishes are fantastic and the fish is always fresh. Make sure your bread basket is warm - and enjoy!

Warm atmosphere, good food, but note updated prices

By diner830 |

Nice, old-fashioned restaurant with solid, traditional Italian food. Genuinely friendly service, with lots of regulars. Everything we ate (we all had pasta) was delicious, and portions were generous. We were not rushed. My only concern is that the prices on the TripAdvisor menu are WAY out of date; they've risen by about 30% and must be updated. Here's the current menu: https://www.isleofcapriny.com/our-menu/ And here's the one with old prices: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g60763-d459130-Reviews-Isle_of_Capri-New_York_City_New_York.html?m=19905 TripAdvisor should do better.

They tried but missed.

By HMR52 |

We were promptly seated and the bread basket was delivered. Thereafter, the word prompt no longer was a part of any description of this Manhattan Italian dining establishment. The waiter acknowledged us, several times. He finally greeted us and acknowledged we brought our wine. We received our menus and ordered. One in our party ordered a Caprese Salad and an entree of grilled salmon with any sauce preferred served on the side. Another requested baked clams and Veal Sorrentino. The waiter returned, to confirm someone requested salmon. He returned a second time to confirm someone requested salmon. At this point we kind of knew, there was a problem. After his return a third time, he brought the appetizers and also dropped off a plate of olives and cheese as he apologized. Finally, when the entrees arrived, the Veal Sorrentino was the winner. The grilled shrimp were bla and the salmon, well, we were just so happy it was salmon. We think there was a problem in the kitchen this evening, but the water was actually very nice and so apologetic, and didn't charge a corkage for our second bottle of wine. We overheard others at another table who complained about the wait. With so many choices in the neighborhood, they really need to get back to a higher level. I wish them well, as the food has the makings of a higher quality restaurant.

Good local Italian restaurant

By Paul F |

Good comfort food. We had minestrone which was served hot and full of vegetables. The grilled salmon was quite well done, as requested whilst still beautifully moist and was a substantial portion The Pasta had an excellent cheesy sauce and tasted great. Altogether an excellent meal with good service however, the restaurant looks a little tired. Recommended, would definitely return One soup, two main courses and one glass of wine about $90

Isle of Capri is still outstanding!!

By Mo W |

My sister-in-law and 2 nieces wanted to take me to a restaurant of my choice to celebrate a big birthday. Isle of Capri was my choice. The food is gourmet Italian and always a 5 star production. Service is attentive and white glove professional. I never hesitate to send out of town guests to this outstanding restaurant. It is as dependable as the sun rising and setting each day. Don't miss it.

Wonderful Meal with warm welcoming "family" atmosphere

By ChristopherL |

The veal was amazing. Perhaps some of the best ever. The staff was mixed. The hostess, owners, and much of the waitstaff was friendly and attentive. Our waiter was a bit "disinterested" but still did a very passable job. The old-school ambience was fun and the meal was efficient but not rushed. Overall would easily eat here again when in the area. We were supposed to have reservations but somehow weren't on the books when we arrived. They still managed to find us a table. Thank you!

Superb Italian food

By FRANKC9246 |

We actually found the restaurant by accident, while walking the neighborhood around Bloomingdales. We checked out the menus posted in the window, and knew that we had found a great place for dinner. It was Valentine's Day, so we were pessimistic about getting in, but we got lucky. Cocktails, a basket of fresh bread, and even a ride for my wife, quickly came to our table. Excellent service. This is authentic Italian cuisine. We tried the calamari fritti, lasagna Bolognese and the fettuccini Carbonara. Although the calamari were a bit greasy, they were wonderful. The pasta potions were so huge that neither of us could finish them. We will definitely be back.

Lunch in Capri

By Bruno |

Really good italian. We went there for lunch and had a really good time. Service was good and food was excellent. Would go back if i was living there. THey also seem to have a good deal of italian american customers, which is a good sign too.

Finally made it here!

This NYC landmark has been on my list for decades. I finally made it and was not disappointed at all! Great service and food. Very authentic Italian with a lovely menu.

What a lovely restaurant

I've been going to Isle of Capri for years and always have an enjoyable meal. The food is so good. The staff is professional and friendly. If you plan to go, make a reservation.

Indifferent service mediocre food

By hattie456 |

I had high hopes for this meal only to be very disappointed. The first waiter told us three specials; a few minutes later a different person recited different specials. When we asked him if the first ones were available he made a joke of some sort but we could not confirm what was available. When ready to order I asked the first waiter what was on the mixed cold appetizer dish and he could not convincingly describe it nor did he offer to find out. He acted annoyed. We placed an order for a warm appetizer dish, baked clams and zucchini fritti. The clams were good; the zucchini were somewhat greasy. The hot appetizer dish was a mixed bag: inedible greasy eggplant cubes amid some average fried peppers, zucchini slices with cheese, pretty good clams and shrimp. The main courses ranged from awful to just average. The liver veneziana came with oversized chunks of meat in a watery sauce. The gnocchi were light but tasteless under what was described as a bolognese sauce. It was also tasteless and unintegrated as if meat was cooked separately from sauce. The lasagna looked like a big flat blob on the plate. My husband ordered it but I couldn’t bring myself to taste it, although he said it was fine. We didn’t stay for dessert after this fiasco. I don’t know how this place gets such a high rating. Maybe this was an off day but I won’t return to find out.

Kid friendly!!

Outstanding service and amazing food. We had 2 six year olds with us and the staff was very attentive to them and us. The eggplant parm and tiramisu was to die for. We will be back!

The BEST ITALIAN RESTAURANT on the Upper East Side of Manhattan

By bobh2175 |

As soon as you enter the Old World Atmosphere of this charming Italian Restaurant, you feel right at home. Warm greetings by the Maitre d' and the owner, Jane, you know that you are in for a wonderful dining experience. The service is exceptional and the menu of authentic dishes makes it difficult to choose which to try first. One of my favorites is the Veal Parmigiana, served with spaghetti and rich meat sauce. Portions are large and drinks are king size. There are few family owned restaurants of this or any type left in New York. Don't miss it.

Food & Service OK, but the bathroom is in the basement!

By richjh |

I went there with an 88 year old. There were 3 wheel chairs in there that I saw. All was OK (not exceptional) including food and service until we got ready to go and the 88 year old needed to use the restroom. I had to almost carry him down and back up. It would cost them 2 tables to have a handicapable restroom on the main level. This is unacceptable. When I said something to the owner she didn't see that it was a problem, so I won't go back!

GREAT FOOD

By Taken2014 |

I really enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. The staff was very accommodating. You will enjoy your visit~

Great food but noisy

By jlpgolfer |

The food selection was typical Italian with good seafood selections The drinks from bar are nothing to brag about they seem to specialize in wine rather than mixed drinks Service is good and you are not rushed but is noisy and tables for four are very small on the sidewalk area

Wonderful experience in NYC

By gail f |

We had three nights in New York city, and on the second went to Isle of Capri on a local recommendation. Had an amazing time with Armando and Juan Paulo our waiters, food was great, ambience was even better. Such a good time we spent our third and last night in New York City back with them and had an even better evening.

No Repeat Visit

By Carole P |

It is a bit of a tourist trap with mediocre food at best. The service was both slow & completely inattentive with prices that normally would be fair but the quality of the food made it not so. Italian food is a favorite for many but we saw full plates not eaten.

Delicious Italian Food

By Lisa C |

We went here for dinner based on a recommendation of a friend who had been here several times. We had a reservation which seemed necessary - it was quite busy. Almost as soon as we were seated, the server Andres brought us a small serving of bruschetta which was delicious. My friend and I both had the Paglia e Fieno which was probably the best that I've had. For dessert, I had the tiramisu which was also excellent. Andres was a great server - very attentive without hovering. A lovely evening.

The Best

If you have not been here yet, you must go. The food is delicious, service is excellent. Cute litttle Italian Restaurant. Food is stellar. The place is uniquely designed . Worth checking out!!!

Restaurants like this are the reason why my Italian Stallion husband doesn't like to go out for Italian food!

By Jaimee A |

We have been wanting to try Isle of Capri for a while. On many trips to Bloomingdales, we have walked past this restaurant and admired its kitschy Italian decor. When we checked the Trip Advisor reviews, they were very positive. We tried to walk-in one night before a show but was told there was a 90 minute wait. That definitely piqued our interest. Yesterday afternoon we made a same day reservation for dinner. The heavy Italian accented maitre de was friendly but when he kept mispronouncing my very Italian last name (named after a region of Italy) that should have been a hint. We arrived on time for our reservation and was shown to our table pretty quickly. In the entry way, they had a half wheel of parmigiano cheese that the waiters would frequently dig fresh pieces out for appetizers - pretty good start! After we were seated, we were given our menus and the bread basket which was disappointing. It consisted of semi-toasted Italian bread and a packet of thin breadsticks. We also couldn't help but noticed that most of the people there were regulars and members of the UES blue haired set. That being said, there are several other establishments on the UES that have the same clientele and are terrific! We ordered the following: - 2 glasses of Prosecco - good and filled to the tippy top of the flute - Shrimp Cocktail - very good and fresh - Beef Carpaccio - terrible! It looked like roast beef and tasted like roast beef. We aren't even talking about superior roast beef, more like supermarket lunch meat. The hubby (who attended culinary school) said the beef should be sliced and pounded just prior to serving. This almost had a refrigerator taste and was very dry. The beef should have a little peppery arugula, thin slices of parmigiano cheese and aged balsamic vinegar on top of it. This was served like you would get a steak salad (steak on top). There were several slices of beef on top of a pile of (not peppery) arugula and several huge pieces of cheese. It was served with cruets of oil and (not aged) balsamic vinegar. - Linguini with white claim sauce - no flavor at all - Linguini with carbonara sauce - needed a lot of pepper and tasted more like alfredo with small pieces of Boars Head ham (instead of seared pancetta). In the pictures, you can see how the sauce isn't fresh and had an almost congealed look to it. It was way too heavy. To add insult to injury, our Saturday night dinner was over in 30 minutes. Seriously, 30 minutes from seating to check. Next time I go to Bloomingdales, no more peeks into this kitschy Italian restaurant. I will just keep walking.

Positively Surprising

By Peter B |

Famished from a long stroll, we vowed to enter the next decent place we passed and stumbled into this vintage 50's old school italian 'red sauce' place expecting overpriced and underwhelming. What we got couldn't have been more the opposite. Moderately priced (not cheap eats but no ouch), every bite was so good we shared every taste with one another out of surprise for how good it was. I devoured an ample portion of eggplant parmigiana over al dente linguini done to perfection. My beloved finished every drop of spaghetti in pomodoro red gravy. The bread was just ok, but the gravy we mopped up with it, outstanding. Even the coffee was fresh and served with real warmed cream and offered with complimentary biscotti and cookies.

Step back in time

By D. Rogers |

I suspect this restaurant hasn’t changed in 80 years— and I hope it never does. This is a true taste of Italy. The food, the wine, the atmosphere is authentic Italy at its best. Big portions, reasonable price, impeccable service. Truest perfect!

Not what is used to be

By macorzo2016 |

The restaurant has been around since the 1950s and at its peak it was another Gino's, with its iconic dishes and iconic guests. The guests are still around, an older, elegant, nostalgic group who come often with their children and grandchildren. The service is attentive, specially if you are a regular. The food is totally old fashioned and traditional, but unfortunately lacks the flavors and techniques of the past. The lasagna sauce was bland, without any meaty, deep tomato taste that you expect, with thick layers of pasta cooked too much al dente . The cannolis were redolent of uncooked flour, too fried on the surface, almost black and still greasy. The cannelloni were semi raw. But the restaurant was full and noisy.

Can't wait to return! Best Italian around!

By JCF-RI |

We visited the Isle of Capri again this weekend, this time with a few friends. This place is one truly amazing Italian restaurant and my favorite in NYC. First the service, which is top notch. Andreas is our favorite waiter, always remembers us and does a fantastic job. The food is the best Italian we’ve had outside Italy, true good old home-style Italian. There were seven of us Saturday and everyone loved their meals from the amazing pasta dishes to the best bracciole around, you can’t beat it. The prices are very reasonable, especially for NYC. The location is great too, very nice area. Now the wine, we just ordered the house Montepulciano, which was superb….to finish it off, amazing cannoli and ricotta cheesecake. If your in NYC I would highly recommend the Isle of Capri- you won’t be disappointed!

Old world decor and charm!

An old world place with gracious service and delicious food. We had lunch here as a treat. Saltimbocca and the spinach filled manicotti were wonderful!

Excellent quality, portion, price, service and atmosphere. My first time in Isle of Capri was today. I will definitely be a regular here from now on!

Classic Family Owned Italian

By RDHtravler |

The food is first rate and the staff engaging. The decor is dated, but somewhat funky and plan to have fun with it. Been there multiple times on multiple trips to NYC. The Veal Saltimbocca is perfectly prepared. There are a lot of Upper East Side regulars there, and even as a frequent out of town diner, they make me feel a part of the regular crowd. They go out of their way to please and never disappoint either with the food or service.

Felt like part of the family

By atkibee |

Visited in January with my family and my brothers family - 4 children including a baby so a largish party and we were made to feel part of the family. This is a little slice of Italy with traditional warmth and decor and delicious food. Wholeheartedly recommend.

Loss of words

Seriously some of the best Italian Ive ever had. Seriously the rudest waitstaff I have ever encountered. I sat awestruck at how awful our waiter was. We were clearly not welcome.

Lovely Romantic Restaurant

Wow, on a snowy NY night, who cared that it took forever to get cab. This place is worth the cold. Great food, great service. Just a lovely little spot.

Nice Place

By KNICKRD |

Stumbled on to this with a few friends for a quick bite, nothing special. Food was very good, and the staff was friendly. Great cheese and olives they give to start, and cookies at the end. Affordable wine list. Try the Agnolotti or carbonara

Upper East Side Italian

By Brian A |

It was Saturday night at 7:30. The place was packed. We moved our reservation from 7:30 to 8:00 with no problem. The restaurant is comfortable but a little tight. The the food was good, not great, but the service was the best we'd ever experienced. All bus boys and strictly male servers wore tuxedos. With this lever of discomfort, one would expect "stuffy", yes? Not here. Friendly, smiling, relaxed and even casual, a diner might think, "Why the suit?" We were two couples. Two Spaghetti alla Bolognese, one Paglia e Fieno, and one Linguini ai Frutti di Mare. I usually order a "basic sauce dish" at my first visit to an Italian restaurant. I'm part Italian and my father had a homemade sauce recipe that was to die for, which my sons use in their restaurants, by the way. The "gravy" was good, not great, the fresh parmesan was terrific. The Paglia was tasty, but the pasta was not al dente, not the worst thing in the world, but the dish would have gone from good to great with firmer pasta. The Frutti di Mare was delicious, per the diner. Ahead of time we ordered cold antipaste, again good, not great, the complimentary bruschetta was great however and that was a nice touch. We ordered no desert, but we were surprised by a complimentary plate of cookies which were good, and complimentary after dinner drinks of a "berrycello", a deep purple version of lemoncello. We would go back.

We enjoyed 2 delicious meals at the Isle of Capri restaurant on a recent family trip to New York. The Hostess and Waiters were second to none. The welcome we received was brilliant and set the tone for two great meals. The food was first class and courses reasonably priced. One member of our family is a Coeliac but the waiter ensured great care was taken to ensure their meal was gluten free and delicious. We would highly recommend Isle of Capri in New York to anyone visiting NYC.

Recently , we went for a 730 reservation for dinner. The place was noisy , packed elbow to elbow ( tables so close , waiters were bumping into each other ). We waited 15 minutes before we gave up , since there was no place to stand.

Nice and cozy

Very cozy place in midtown Manhattan, good food and pleasant atmosphere, not that cheap but ok for the quality.

charming old fashioned Italian on 3d ave

By Louis G |

A 1950's Italian restaurant on third avenue is pretty much unchanged. Traditional food and service. Past is good, and of course the canoli is too

Everything you could hope for and more!!

By owellynot |

Met my uncle and cousin for dinner. We had a wonderful three hour meal. No rush, lots of little dishes and wine. When we finally ordered I had the chicken parm and it was HUGE! All of the portions were big. The atmosphere is exactly what you would want out of a lovely Italian restaurant, you cant beat the service. My uncle said he eats there every time he's in NYC. From now on, I will too!!

What a find for lunch!

By Karen E |

We stumbled across this restaurant on our way back from Central Park. Our waiter was outstanding and the food was perfect. Large servings full of traditional Italian homecooked flavour and richness. We sat in the enclosed veranda facing the street and enjoyed a beautiful bottle of Barbarillo. There was no room for dessert but we ordered coffee (the coffee was the best I have had in the US too). Along with coffee the waiter brought us a complimentary Limoncello each and a plate of mixed biscotti. All round a fabulous meal!

A little Italy on Third Avenue

By HalloweenOwl |

First time in this restaurant, will definitely be back! Went to Italy an few years ago, this definitely was reminiscent of meals there. Service was attentive and not intrusive . The food was great with little touches of being in " mama's" kitchen. Great wine offerings for everyone's pocketbook?Location is easy for convenient travel.

Great Food and Wonderful Servers

We have dined at this restaurant for many years and each time we are in NYC we make a point of dining here. The food is great, proportions are excellent and prices are very reasonable. The restaurant is cozy and the wait staff is very professional and friendly.

Isle of Capri Keeps Getting Even Better!

By happytrails555 |

I wrote a review after visiting the Isle of Capri in July, right after the restriction on restaurants was lifted in New York City. It was a great review, since the Isle of Capri was open again for those of us who love their food and love them. I also ate there again on August 8th, with a group of friends, and once again in September. By the August visit, Isle of Capri was now fully established as an outdoor dining experience. They transformed their space, a full block long, on their side street into a truly Roman experience. The flowers create a truly intimate and serene dining area, with beauty and taste. Being on the side street, the noise of the Avenues is gone, and what is there is quiet and relaxed, with sidewalk traffic almost non existent. Who cares if it rains? The awnings are substantial and protect you from the rain. The barriers are disguised as garden boundaries and protect you from wind. Want to distance a little more? No problem here, everyone's happy to oblige you. It tells you how relaxed and comfortable people are here, when they cheerfully accommodate moving over a bit so everyone can be even more relaxed and feel safe. Additionally, the food is always Italian at its most authentic and delicious. Jane has created an oasis on the Upper East Side. Even the charming waiters are wearing casual, but professional, serving outfits to make dinner or lunch at the Capri fun, relaxed, casual, but superb! Come here, enjoy their fabulous food, their professional and friendly service, their lovely setting. Great place to be pampered! Escape Manhattan and leave your worries behind. You'll be well cared for and leave happy. And you will still be in Manhattan.

Delicious Italian food

Excellent italian. Had the spaghetti bolognese which was delicious - big portion and served very quickly. They also give you complimentary bread and bruschetta

Never be Disappointed

By Jessica B |

I have been to this restaurant with three people and recently with 12- consistently good food, exceptional service and you are never rushed. Pace yourself because the appetizers and desserts enhance the salads, pasta and meat or fish dishes. My favorite is the variety of fish available. Even the selection of preparation shows the care and pride taken by the management and staff. Lunch is wonderful, but if you want the best of all worlds have dinner there. Make sure to have reservations, you will be happy that you did.

Old fashioned Italian

By wrengirl |

This restaurant may not be 5 stars for everyone, but for me, it’s perfect! If you’re looking for an old fashioned (classic) Italian restaurant with friendly staff, great service, consistently good food, and reasonable prices where you’re treated like family, this is it. We keep coming back, and so does everyone we recommend it to.

Inconsistent

By MidtownEats |

This restaurant has been around for over 60 years, so it's doing something right. The owner is a sweet lady, and the ambiance is old-school and unpretentious. However, the service is uneven -- sometimes attentive, sometimes lackadaisical -- and the food is pretty unpredictable. Some dishes are fantastic (my kids like the meatballs and the ravioli), others are borderline inedible. One night the pasta special was so salty that I couldn't eat more than half a forkful.

Best Italian restaurant in NYC with prime location

By xamanaut |

Best Italian restaurant in NYC. Service provided by Armando is top of the top. No visit in NYC is completely without dinner in there. My kids loved the pasta, and all the little details that they always offer them.

Unbelievable! We were treated like family!! Amazingly authentic!

By Diane F |

We are so happy with the authentic Italian food and service! Like no other that we've experienced! We will be back!

Out door dining Nailed by Isle of Capri owners and employees

By Carolyn D |

Great to have this restaurant opened outside; Jane, Donna and their employees know how to do it. Smaller menu of their best dishes, QR menu available as well as paper, excellent service, and quick turnover. Had eggplant parmigiana and striped bass. Both delicious as Isle of Capri has the best tomato sauce of all Italian restaurants in the area. Amazed at how the owners and staff managed a line that sometimes had 10 -15 people. Felt safe from Covid-19 as they cleaned tables thoroughly, cleaned chairs with wipes, socially distanced tables and people in line. Felt as though we were in an Italian village.

Excellent Traditional Italian

By Dale M |

Good prices and excellent food and service. If you are close to Bloomingdales this is the place to go.

Great lunch

By Annelisen |

Visited the restaurant twice during my last New York-stay, both times for lunch, both times really good! Attentive and very friendly staff, great food, good recommendations and very nice wine! Complimentary wonderful Limonchello at the end of the meal, and not to expencive. Great place!

Old school, gets basics right!

By Alison B |

Very nice little restaurant, happened upon by chance so low expectations but these were exceeded. Very friendly and attentive service, tasty food (pasta more than veal) and lots of nice extras. Recommended!

Great find

By Ekopl |

you might not come here if you did not know about it. It is worth the journey. Service was excellent and the food was very good. I think my wife hit the jackpot with the ravioli with black truffle sauce. Will definitely be back

Great Food, Service & Atmosphere

By Bill K |

First, thank you to my friend Steve E. from Great Neck, who recommended this restaurant to me. The old world decor brings me back to my vacations in Italy. I felt like a guest eating in a familys home in the Naples region of Italy. The food was excellent. The service couldn't have been better. When you first sit down, they bring you an olive and cheese plate along with a bread basket with the best breadsticks I've had in a long time. We sat in the enclosed "outdoor" section. We started with a bottle of Krug Napa Valley Merlot. (I prefer that over Italian) No one rushed us which was wonderful. We had soft shell crabs, bronzino, chicken parm., steamed broccoli, caprise salad, ceasar salad and more. The food was prepared perfectly. It was so pleantiful that we didn't order desert this time.(I plan to on our next visit) Even so, they brought us complimentry biscotti and Lemongelo anyway. The the staff is "gracious" and efficient. This is a FAMILY run restaurant. I believe that's one reason it's so good.

Superbly Authentic Italian Cuisine

By TravelLover23456 |

I don't usually do restaurant reviews, but this place is so good I just have to. This is my second trip to Isle of Capri and, both times, I have been thrilled by how authentic their food is to what one might expect in Italy. If you're into old-style, family-run Italian restaurants that prepare pasta as it is prepared in Italy, that provide wonderful formal service, and that is reasonably priced, Isle of Capri is a can't miss. I wish I could move it to Chicago!

Wonderful environment, friendly staff, average food

By John M |

We loved our private table in a small, enclosed alcove that juts out from the front of the restaurant onto the 3rd Ave sidewalk. Private and festively decorated with a view of NYC excitement and much quieter than the main room, conducive to conversation. Our food, however, was not remarkable - scallops with brocolli rabe was the best.... but our two pasta dishes (tortellini and paglia e fieno) were decidedly unremarkable... surprising since the pasta is supposedly their specialty. Fried shrimp dish was OK (except for the pasta which was apparently overcooked.) For the food alone, I wouldn't recommend this restaurant... but the environment (especially our little private table in the alcove) made it a fun experience

wonderful genrous tasty

By islandboy88 |

only once have we eaten here, among our last meals while living in NY. Simply marvelous. Our hosts could not have been more generous with samples. The food A+. Ambience, comfort , sanitation all A+. Staff excellent. Go and see for yourself. It was a birthday meal and they did it all nicely.

Isle of Capri never disappoints - always amazing food and service

By Leighann B |

Whenever we are in NYC we make it a point to have dinner at Isle of Capri. The food is very reasonably priced, but most of all, it is beyond amazing. What really makes this restaurant so very special is the service. From the minute you walk in the door until it's time to put on your coat, you feel like you are the most important person in the restaurant. Last weekend, we had tickets for the theatre and let the staff know when we arrived for our dinner. They did everything possible to make sure that not only did we get to the theatre on time, but our dining experience was exceptional (as always). If you are in NYC, you should definitely make a reservation. You will not be disappointed.

So good, we went twice in a week

By Steven H |

We stayed in New York for one week, and came across this place by chance. It was so good and friendly that we decided to re-book for our last evening. Again, the service and food was great , and really cheap. They give you bread, olives, bruschetta etc even without ordering any appetisers. The main course portions are really big, and very tasty. The waiters, owners and all staff are really friendly. After the meal you get free lemon or strawberry liqueurs, both are tasty but strong! I would definitely recommend this place.

Food 50% great 50% eh

By Janou J |

What's great? 1. Even on a Friday night without a reservation, they squeezed us in. 2. Clams oreganato - tasty 3. Lasagna - great flavor with a very tender meat in the sauce; we thought it might have been either veal and/or chicken in the sauce. 4. Service was quick but not rushed. Eh items 1. very, very chewy calamari 2. not very warm fettucine alfredo; not much of a taste either

Proper Italian

By LAROZA12345 |

We ended up eating here twice in 4 days whilst on business in New York. Its a fantastic family run Italian. Great staff, fantastic food, reasonable prices. Go there, no need to say more.

Terrific place for lunch or dinner

By HappyTraveler555 |

Isle of Capri is an oasis in NYC. Sadly, Jane, the matriarch passed away recently, and everyone misses her presence. The quality of the food is still excellent. I had the rigatoni alla vodka, my friend had the baby rack of lamb. Both were excellent and as good as any I've had in Rome. When you arrive, they greet you like family. You can sit at the windows or in the main dining part, but either way you can't beat the professional service and the exceptional cooking. I've been there dozens of times and have always experienced the consistent high quality. Their quality is top and the people make it a great place to escape from the noise of Third Avenue. The manager was gracious and accommodating. Try it for lunch or dinner and you'll be happy, well-fed, and relaxed.

Quirky staff, good Italian food

By RTWVer |

We arrived six minutes late for our 8.30pm reservation, after finding perhaps the only NY yellow cab driver who couldn’t read a map. Despite my recounting this light-hearted tale to the waiter on arrival, he - in all seriousness replied - ‘oh yes, you’re late, we’ll ok, I won’t mention you’re late to my boss - don’t worry about it’ (my girlfriend responded in kind, saying that we wouldn’t be worrying at all about it - what difference could six minutes make. A strange comment for him to make, I thought) Also, having phoned earlier for a reservation early that afternoon, on asking for a window seat I was told by the lady who answered that “we’ll pass on that request”, so I can only assume the restaurant plays favourites? Not exactly the warmest welcome I’ve had, and I’ve dined in London and Paris, without problems. Despite the off-handedness on reservation and the slightly off-colour remark by the waiter, the service was, from then on in, fine and attentive. All the more puzzling then, was the waiter’s earlier remark, when he later told us that by 8.30pm onwards, it wasn’t their busiest time (and indeed the restaurant was only half full by then). The food was average/ good, and my sense is it depends what dish you go for. I had the shrimp in marinara sauce, and it was a generous and tasty food plate. The marinara was rich and flavoursome and the butterfly-style shrimp made a nice spectacle - all served with linguine. My girlfriend wasn’t totally bowled over by the chicken scarpariello (little pieces of seared chicken sautéed in garlic, herbs and white wine), as it fell a little into blandness, and the flavours didn’t seem to have taken as well to the meat. The House Prosecco ($50 p/b) was good, and the meal was furnished with bread, as standard. It’s a charming place in a good location, and you’ll get a nice Italian meal for a $$$ price, but you should ring to reserve and maybe be a bit more thick-skinned to their approach than perhaps we were. Equally, my money is as good as anyone else’s, and I don’t expect to be pinned at the front door for being six minutes late. All being even, it’s worth a spin.

Perfect food & wonderful service- love this place!

By mds |

Amazing Italian food - superb service from the minute you walk in the door. You will not be disappointed! Kind, professional, humble waiters. Hostess super nice. - the food! Simply amazing.

Delicious, atmospheric, friendly

By bcasey1 |

Ate here with local friends on a recent NYC visit and loved it. Bread and bruchetta served when sested, drink order taken promptly. Large menu with all of our Italian favorites. We all loved what we ordered. Sauce was delicious! When we finished, a plate of yummy Itsian cookies was brought to our table, which was a nice touch, too. Will go back for sure!

Simply Amazing!!

By JCF-RI |

My wife & I went back to the Isle of Capri this weekend, this time with another couple. As always everything was amazing. The food was great, really loved the appetizers & the staff is always friendly & welcoming. We had our favorite waiter, Andreas. He is the best- always remembers us, even what we usually order. If we didn’t live so far away, we would be dining there every week. It’s just good old fashion home Italian cooking and reasonably priced, especially for NYC. Can’t wait to go back!

Always a favorite!!

By GeorgeFMarkhamON |

Always delicious, always friendly, like a home away from home. Capri is a regular eatery for us, for good reason. The Veal Scallopine was delicious. Bruschetta and Olives a meal in itself. Grilled Vegetable just right. Fruit Plate magnificent!

Reminded us of visits to Italy

By Donna B |

We chose Isle of Capri based on TripAdvisor reviews and we were not disappointed. Reservations, especially on a Saturday night, are essential. Although it was crowded, noise was not an issue and service was not rushed. Everyone enjoyed their dinners, although our son's girlfriend had to choose a different appetizer and dessert (cannolis) as they were out of both of her choices. Be advised that prices are higher than those on their website menu; there is a disclaimer that prices may be different. Three of us ordered pasta and portions were very large. We each have another dinner for tonight!

Good food and service

In NY and went to here. Phene al Voka was perfect as was the sole. Great service very attentive and not too pushy. Good atmosphere as well

OFF THE NAPLES COAST - IN NYC

By Norman W |

Colorful and welcoming, this restaurant evidences the ambience of Capri, the island in Italy’s Bay of Naples. The food, wine and service personnel all add to the spirit of Italy - despite being located on 3rd Ave and 61st East. The pasta is prepared on site and the seafood offerings are superb.

Rejoice! The Isle of Capri opens again!!

By happytrails555 |

I last reviewed this great place in 2014. Nothing--except the Covid closing--has changed! Jane (the owner) and her staff are open outside serving their usual outstanding Italian meals., I had the veal piccata, which is better than I've eaten in Rome, and my friend had the Lamb Chops. Delicious. Always. What also is back is the friendly, professional, warm atmosphere and service which they have always offered. They have an outside dining area which makes you forget that you're in NYC. It's like being in Roma! Rumor has it that they will be open on Sundays, which means I won't decided to have superb Italian food on a Sunday, and then remember that I can't because they are closed. Bravissima, Jane, and staff, for serving once again, the best Italian food in New York City!!

Have to go back

By Paddy M |

This is a gem of a restaurant. Great food, great wine, fabulous atmosphere and equally fabulous staff. We just asked our host to order for us and we were not disappointed.

Excellent

By archman8 |

Perfect Italian meals for lunch. Veal parm thin and tasty, just the right amount of light sauce. Veggie packed minestrone. All raved about their meals. Old world charm. Clean. Friendly, attentive waitstaff. Fairly priced.

excellent food and even better service

By YvetteArecibo_PR |

We went with a party of 10 with reservations; the restaurant is compact but they have a little room that we had to ourselves. Since it was downstairs, away from the main restaurant, we thought we might be neglected but this was not the case at all! The owner/manager was solicitous of our comfort and liking of the food; she came down herself several times to check. Our waiter, Armando was the best! He stayed with us practically all the time. The food was really good italian food, served hot and timely. I add that because this was not the case on our next night out in another restaurant. The cappuccino was really outstanding too. Good central location to midtown, east. We would definitely go there again--coming from 10 different women, pretty high compliment.

Great restaurant for lunch or dinner

By Dave |

Been to Capri dozens of times. Always treated with the utmost care by the staff, which is the best in all of New York. The food is just as good as the staff and you will never leave hungry or disappointed. I can't recommend this restaurant enough. Whether or not you stop for lunch or dinner you will be extremely satisfied.

Standard Italian in a colorful red dining room

By Bi-coaster |

Isle of Capri is good, but not exceptional. The staff are very warm and welcoming and it feels like a place with many loyal regulars. We dined here before Covid-19 and the food itself was better than last evening. That said, the veal piccata was lovely thin pieces of the meat and very tasty. The sole piccata was nicely prepared too. The accompanying veggies and the Caesar salad were both acceptable to good. We ordered profiteroles (cream filled ones) for dessert and appreciated the complimentary limoncello. For the record, there is a 10% charge to offset Covid issues. Our temperatures were taken upon arrival and we had to complete one health/contact form for the two of us.

OUTSATNDING ITALIAN FOOD!

By Kevin - Darlene... H |

The owner and his wife are lovely people as are the entire staff. The owner did a wonderful job creating a real Italian atmosphere, his wife is carrying on the business after her husband's passing and doing a great job. They have rabbit, sea food, Italian dishes, and so much more. They give you a great little desert tray to select from after dinner is complete, and while the place is a bit tight and small it is big in taste and personality! definitely outstanding food and service, give it a try after shopping at Bloomies! Or afterwards!!

Fabulous Southern Italian

By PSGumby |

I live in NYC and had not been to Isle of Capri for a long time. Suddenly, I had a yen for cannelloni, which few restaurants serve any more. Isle of Capri has been around for years serving really good Southern Italian food. Other, hipper, restaurants have come and gone, but Isle of Capri keeps going and going. And for good reason. Everything they serve is good. Portions are huge, my wife and I generally split an appetizer or salad, and there is ample to split. Prices are moderate, especially given the neighborhood - just a block from Bloomingdale's. If you are looking for the kind of Italian they served when you were a kid, this is the place. Service is pleasant, efficient and friendly.

Thoroughly enjoyed our experience

By bigdoglips2017 |

Wide menu, reasonably priced. Wine list also moderately priced. Seafood and veal were excellent. Waiter was very attentive, and did not try to rush us (we were not in a hurry and enjoyed our dinner at a leisurely pace). Portions are quite large, so unless you’re a hearty eater, you may want to consider sharing some of your selections.

Still Good

By bakfar |

I haven't been to Isle in at least two years and returned yesterday. The place hasn't lost its old warm charm. The food is excellent as is the service. The ambiance is still great, a classic Italian with white tablecloths, waiters in tuxedos but so totally non pretentious.

Classic and wonderfully old fashioned

By bakfar |

Isle of Capri has been a round forever. We've been eating there on and off for 20 years. It is always consistently good. Wonderful old fashioned service, white tablecloths, waiter in tuxedos and gracious. Even the busboys are polite and friendly. Great staff training. The food has always been terrific. It is consistent and never disappoints and one never leaves hungry. I particularly like Chicken Scarpariello which is hard to find now in Italian restaurants and they do it fabulously. However, everything else is just as good.

A Classic

By dmk10022 |

After living in New York for over 30 years I finally went here last Thursday. I had walked by this restaurant millions of times and had always thought about going, but it just looked like it was an outdated place. Even though it's been around 59 years. Upon entering you are greeted warmly and the inside of the restaurant has this warm rosy glow. It immediately felt cosy and calm, like stepping into another era and place. We were given a nice table by the window and immediately given a nice bread basket and bruschetta. The service was fantastic, with the waiter not letting us over order and tell us we could share an entrée. The veal saltimbocca was delicious as was the pasta with lobster. We shared what I think is the biggest Tartuffo I have ever seen for dessert. Afterwards we were given a homemade liquer and plate of delicious cookies. I will be coming here more often to make up for these last 30 years of passing it by!

Return visit did not disappoint!

By Traveller1989P |

I first came here in sept 2016 and had the most amazing meal so when I revisited again a few weeks ago I insisted we came here and it didn’t disappoint! The food is by far the best we had in New York and is a fraction of the price - total value for money! The service is also exceptional and as a Brit you really don’t mind paying the recommended 20% tip in fact you want to give more like 30%! Don’t miss out!! Make sure you go, I know I will again!

Lunch Al Fresco

By Al M |

I enjoyed another wonderful lunch at Isle of Capri last week. The sidewalk dining has been set up on the relatively quiet side street. The server was professional and accommodating. The excellent veal parm was huge… I took a large portion of it with me which was just as tasty the next day. The bread was fresh, and the thin breadsticks were a pleasant change from the thick ones I often find in Italian restaurants. All in all, this was a splendid dining experience.

We wish we lived in NYC so we could eat here often!

By anywhereforfun |

This may be the best restaurant experience we've ever had. The food is spectacular in taste and presentation. We had beef carpaccio, lasagna and osso buco...each was fantastic. When we declined dessert, we were brought a small plate with an assortment of delicious cookies, as well as lemoncello and grappa that were both yummy. See our picture of the bottle of grappa...ask Juan how the whole pear got into the bottle! The most amazing part of our visit was the staff. Each friendly and pleasant -- we were treated like regulars and friends. It was absolutely delightful! Thank you to Juan and Freddie!

reliable old style yummy

By islandboy88 |

Having lived near by and rarely returning, we make a point of visiting. Wonderful for special event diners or a mighty fine lunch. Service honed to perfection. I can still see the huge block of cheese they carve from. The bathrooms down stairs remind me of the catacombs, which I've only seen in movies. But clean and serviceable.

Excellent food and service

By Dennis C |

Every dish was perfect from start to finish. And it was comfortable and not cramped like other NYC restaurants

Absolutly great service and food

By Foodietravelers5 |

Found the restaurant by accident, looked interesting so went in. Was a Wednesday night so surprised to find it almost full. Suggest reservations. We got luck and were able to seat us. Hostess stopped by the table twice during the dinner to make sure things were going well. Our waiter (Ricci?) was terrific. Gave great suggestions and just the right degree of attention. There if you needed something, not smothering. Had the house special and well named. Have a big appetite if you order it, you will need it. Wine recommendation was well suited to the dinner. Limoncello at the end a nice touch

Tasty food, classic NY ambiance, ample portions

By phil fort wash |

Our party of three made a last minute reservation at Isle of Capri on a Saturday night. The restaurant was about 3/4 full and the hostess made sure we all had our vaccination cards. We were seated promptly - tables are fairly close together but not right on top of each other. A waiter came promptly to fill our water glasses and take our drink order - we ordered a bottle of Barolo from a small but decent wine list (appropriately priced for the level of restaurant and Eastside location). We were served two complimentary dishes - bruschetta and a plate of olives, cheese and peppers. We also ordered appetizers and all 3 were tasty and decent potions for one person. For our entrees 2 of us ordered pasta dishes and 1 of us ordered Salmon with a dijon white wine sauce. All 3 dishes were very good and good-sized portions. We finished off our meal with some incredibly good profiteroles and complimentary Limoncello. The ambiance is classic New York Italian restaurant - the people-watching and catching snatches of conversations added to the enjoyment of the evening.

The best Authentic Italian resturant in town!!

By ewhetsto |

We found this place by chance, and the service we got was so spectacular!!! The chief waiter - Armando, was so nice and welcoming and the food was delicious. We were 5 people, and we just wanted some soup on a cold October noon, tried all 5 soups, and they were all fabulous! The next day we can for Dinner and it was even better!!! The people were so nice, and even though the restaurant was packed with people - most of them are local, the service was extraordinary and the owner and chief waiter had time to talk to all the customer and give you very homey feeling.

Delicious dinner

By sueFife_Scotland |

We walked in and received an amazing welcome. A table was found for us and the service was second to none. The meal was delicious and well presented. We never felt rushed and were left to chat for as long as we wanted.

Honest Italian Menu ....

By pointopoint |

Loved our visit to the Isle of Capri and enjoyed a superb serve of cannelloni and my husband inhaled the Veal Milanese. Generous serves in both instances and a good Chianti - we were very happy! Ambiance is good and the staff are professional in their approach and clearly love looking after their patrons. Bravo! When next we are in NYC, Isle of Capri will be on our list for a reasonably priced meal in pleasant surroundings.

Small, cozy and great!!

Great Dining experience from Start to Finish

By John P |

From the bruschetta, parmesan cubes, olives , and Italian bread placed on the table upon our seating , to the Tartuffo served for desert, we had a most enjoyable dining experience from beginning to end. The meatballs and baked clams we had for appetizers were delicious. Our main course of Veal Sorrentino was the best I ve tasted, and I have been to many Italian restaurants in my day. The portion was large and we both took home doggie bags of the veal. Pasta with marina served as a side dish tasted like Mamas home made. Server Andres was most accomodating to our wishes and made for a most pleasant dining experience

A bit of family dining

By Sealwrangler2 |

The best of an older style Italian restaurant with the mama still checking on the food quality, waiters who know their stuff and serve, well, but do not hover. Friendly, good food, LARGE portions.

Very average food

By wiseoleman |

Took friends here for dinner and was somewhat dissappointed as it came highly recommended.Took the hostess about 5 minutes to figure out which table to sit us,even though we has a reservation.Portions were big but dishes a bit bland.Would probably not return as there are better options in midtown NYC.$11 for an average glass of wine a bit pricey.

A treasure within the Italian restaurants in NYC.

By RONAUST |

My wife and I were in NYC for the week before Christmas. We love Italian food and friends recommended this restaurant. We ended up going there twice because the food was delicious and the service was polite and prompt. We arrived the first time and shared an appetiser and had a main meal each. There was absolutely no room for dessert. We were full . The next time we had no appetiser, only a main meal and still were full of fantastic food. The servings are for hungry people. So our advice is - go there hungry and have the usual 3 course meal -. Oh, the Tiramasu looked so inviting. Next time for sure!

Authentic Italian

By Bob M |

Visited on a Saturday night and the place was busy. Quaint atmosphere, table clothes, corner location. I sat near windows and could people watch. Attentive service all around. I had lasagna which was excellent.

Great food and peaceful environment.

By Bob C |

I’ve been at Isle of Capri several times, I always was treated with deeply respect by everyone in there, the patrons are always quite and polite people, I’ve never heard anybody talking loudly in there, the location is great, the food is wonderful and service is impeccable, try to pick table close to the window, they are the best ones in my opinion.

Long a favorite, still a favorite

By GeorgeFMarkhamON |

The Isle has been a favorite haunt for many years. We were somewhat apprehensive hearing that management had changed. GOOD NEWS! The food is still impeccable and generously portioned. The staff are even more attentive than before. Delicious, authentic, always a pleasure. The former owner's wife still greets guests on a regular basis.

Just Amazing!!

By coachee1313 |

This restaurant has been there for 60 years and now we know why. Terrific, just awesome freshly prepared food. This spot is so authentic I felt like we were in Grandma's Kitchen!! The owners were sitting next to us sampling wines so we joined the festivities!! Wait staff is so professional. Can't say enough great things.

Nothing trendy or hip about this place. Just good food in an atmosphere of good fun and friendly service. Isle of Capri has been my go to Italian since I was a kid.

The best meal we had in NY

By CaroletaUres |

We have received a recommendation to a nice restaurant close by, which was closing for a late lunch. As we had passed by Isle de Capri, we decided to go back and try it out. Service was probably one of the best in my life, and the waiters did everything to accomodate our family and my sleepy-grumpy-2-year old daughter, without suffocating us and invading our privacy. Really cozy and well-decorated, we had excellent pasta with seafood, my daughter ate super-well (unusual for her), and, by the end of the meal, they prepared a surprise, with delicious profiteroles and candles, all singing Happy Bday to her (we briefly said we were in NY for her bday). It was so very sweet and nice. They also recommended a bottle of wine that was even cheaper than the one we originally chose, but that smelled velvety and tasted even better. Talking about the trip with the family, 2 out of 3 chose this one as the best meal we had on the 10-day trip.

Delightful Restaurant in Midtown Manhattan

Close to shopping, a delightful, intimate restaurant on 3rd Ave. Food is very good, and the setting is cozy.

Reliable If Not Spectacular Italian Restaurant.

By Mark G |

You know you are right at home when Maria Lamanna, your new best Italian grandmother, greets you at the door. Duck when you enter as the interior is quite cozy. Nicely crowded the evening we were there. Convenient to Cinema 123, Bloomies, Dylan's Candy Bar, and Serendipity III. We like the tuxedoed waiters. Cocktails are fine. Caesar salad was refreshingly cold. Anchovies would have been nice. Pastas were solid. Veal choices are numerous. Wines by the glass are down the middle. Clientele not so much Manhattan, more outer borough and LI. Solid and reliable. All in all, not necessarily in our first tier on UES. But at the very top of the next tier.

My 1st stop for authentic Italian when in NYC

By KerriSayville |

Full disclosure. I have been coming here for 20 years, not sure if I wrote a review. Used to work in NYC and was a regular. Now I come a few times a year or gasp miss years because I live out of town. Amazing service , always remember you and it is a perfect people watching spot on corner of 61st and 3rd. Amazing food, great ambiance and fun view by the windows. My favorite is linguine with red clam sauce and I challenge you to find better. Bolognese is also amazing if you want pasta. Other than that you truly cannot go wrong. Always a great authentic Italian NYC old school type of vibe. Hey if it’s been there a while there is a reason:-) Kerri

Delicious, Authentic Italian Food in Intimate Setting Served with Class

By Nigel Explores |

We enjoyed dinner at this small Italian restaurant on 3rd and 61st St The Isle of Capri isn't much to look at from the outside, but inside it was cosy and intimate. The menu is well-stocked with a variety of dishes, but it's not so many as to be overwhelming. The shrimp, I'm told, was "succulent and so, so goood!" My Chicken Marsala was sliced thin, juicy, tender and tasty. Cappuccino and Canolli was the perfect end to a great dinner. Our waiter Andre was friendly and gave us very helpful info on the area and getting around on the subway. He was a pleasure to speak to and recommended food, grocery stores and travel routes. Highly recommended if you love Italian. And if you don't, after sampling the Isle of Capri, you might just change your tune.

Great place!

By medicinewoman8 |

Authentic Italian ambience, great wait staff and wonderful food. Closed on Sundays. Make a reservation and ask for one of the "private or semi-private" table/rooms; intimate or quiet with doors that u can close. Large and varied menu; never had a disappointing meal. Bartenders are generous and desserts are delicious.

What a lovely evening!

By Alastair C |

Four of us spent a delightful evening celebrating a special birthday at this venerable New York eatery. The service was exemplary from start to finish. You'll maybe find more adventurous cuisine elsewhere but you'd be hard pushed to find more choice in Italian favourites than here. The calamari starter was excellent, as was the filet of sole. This deserves the high rating from other reviewers, and the cost represented great value for money. Would unhesitatingly return!

Old World charm, excellent menu

By WindsorTudor |

It doesn't get more traditionally Italian than Isle of Capri on the Upper East Side--superb menu & friendly, gracious service. Reservations are a must--especially on a Saturday night, which was jam-packed on a recent visit.

Given the reviews by others, a real disappointment

By intrepidtraveler23 |

Bases on other traveler reviews, thought this would be a really nice meal. Not so much. It was OK, but nothing special. Also thought it was very pricey given the portion size. Would, not go back.

Small Wedding Celebration

By Donna B |

We decided on Isle of Capri for our son and daughter-in-law's wedding reception because it was walking distance from St Vincent Ferrer church and we had always had an excellent experience dining at the restaurant when our son lived on the UES. Maria, the banquet manager, was outstanding helping me with planning the menu and arranging all of the details. They were able to accommodate up to 25 guests in the main dining room at our own table. Everything was truly outstanding, with large portions of entrees, impeccable service, and reasonable prices. The atmosphere was reminiscent of visits to Italy. We had a 4 course luncheon menu, with an individual wedding celebration menu for each guest. The restaurant makes sure that everyone shows their Covid vaccine card and ID (unvaccinated guests can dine outdoors) and all staff are vaccinated too. Everyone enjoyed their food and drinks and the celebration was flawless. Communication with Maria via text messages and phone was so easy. This is a family run restaurant that cares about service!

Ossobucco

By Storey-Myrick |

The Cantaloupe ann Prosciutto are very fresh. Ossobucco is the best I've ever had! Very busy place with lots of locals and Bloomingdales shoppers. We've eaten here many times over the years.

Delicious!

By KFBuchsbaum |

Nice food, great service. they have great bread, bruschetta and a terrific Caesar salad. We all had pasta and it was very nice. The staff accommodated our request to get us out quickly. It really lovely to sit by the windows along the sidewalk.

Excellent

By michel a |

The ambience is highly refined and fresh. You can find here the coolest people in town, while you are embraced by a very relaxed atmosphere. The food is excellent. The moment you walk in, you feel like you have arrived somewhere special. The service was of the highest quality, from the waiters to the management. A very special mention to Donna who was a perfect and extremely attentive "padrona di casa", her sister and her incredible mom who make you feeling at home from the first step you make into the restaurant. Highly recommended. Excellent Italian appetizers, (baked clams and polpette made with a secret family recipe!) ... pasta, Spigola alla Marechiara, and of course: they will serve you the best choice of Italian Wines in NYC!

Be prepared to wait for a good lunch

By Gloria B |

Servers are really nice and very helpful. But it took over 45 minutes to get our salad at a time when the restaurant was not crowded. Lunch was good. I had a very nice linguine Primavera with lots of vegetables and a very light tomato sauce. It was delicious and only $15. No outside seating but we were able to sit next to a window, always fun to people watch.

Average food, below average service, poor dinner experience.

By chalkytripy |

Family meal at Isle of Capri. Staff were unhelpful and short. Leaving before taking a full drinks order so needed calling back, had to again be called over to order food after a long wait without being asked. Water wasn't offered to be topped up in at any point during the meal. Instead it was after the meal when the bill was asked for. Food took a while to be served. Meals were basic and not at all what was expected. The sides for chicken dishes were an embarrassment. Total disappointment and a gratuity added at over 18% for at best 1% service level was poor. Avoid!

Warm & inviting

By MarilynD |

Food is wonderful with lots of choices . It is warm & inviting , but can be at times noisey . when at full capacity .

Warm and atmospheric..

By gpstalent |

Although it opened in 1955, this was my first time to visit this charming italian restaurant on New Yorks upper east side. From the moment of walking through the door for lunch, I was greeted warmly and shown to my table where I could wait for the rest of my party to arrive.. The service was excellent and when i asked if the chef could preapre a simple fettucini with truffle oil a dab of butter and parmessan cheese, there was no hesitation.. and it was delicious. to start we shared a large plate of deep fried zucchini, cut into thick strips and lightly breaded and some deep fried calamari.. both delicious. then came the pasta and a simple arrugula salad dressed with good live oil and a squeeze of lemon. The Dover sole was very good, but a rather large portion.. side of sauteed spinach with garlic and some small potatoes were very good.. Good cocktails, a nice Moltipuliciano and with coffee a complimentary limoncello with some small italian cookies.. The atmosphere is warm and friendly and very professional. I love this place and will be back for dinner..I just hope they always keep it the way it is..

Old time Italian

By 141Dini |

I enjoyed my dinner here. Prices are reasonable and dishes are ample. I shared a portobello mushrooms which was ok. My main course was the veal piccata which was outstanding. I had a side of angel hair pasta , yummy . Wines by the glass are well priced and a nice selection. Service was friendly and prompt. Traditional Italian ambiance. I would go again.

Mangia!

By 232tmg |

This is a neighborhood, family owned gem! The welcome is a bit brash at first but again that's the Italian love. I highly recommend making a reservation, this is a popular establishment and will fill up quickly. The lasagna is absolutely perfect, large portion so save some bread and have a full bottle of wine. The gnocchi is also an excellent entree! The staff are amazing, they will take care of you and answer any questions. Bring an appetite, sit down for a long, enjoyable dinner with an espresso at the end, you will love this place. Mangia!!

Great little Find

By KNICKRD |

Stumbled upon this with some friends. Food was very good, real classics. The Agnolotti, Carbonara, Pasta with Porcini. Staff was very friendly. They give you some olives and cheese to start, then at the end a few cookies, Nice touch. Wine list reasonable as well

Date night.

By Declan K |

The best Italian meal I've ever had in 25 years coming to this city. Service superb. So friendly and attentive. Had three courses and drinks and everything was perfect. Cannot speak highly enough of the service, ambience and value for money at the Isle of Capti.

Welcoming and delicious

By aspenanne |

I received a recommendation to go and this cozy place did not disappoint. Groups of all sizes (one - eight) were well care for with delicious food.

Great little find

By LaVagabonda59 |

Very friendly and accommodating staff. Food was delicious. Rigatoni with vodka sauce was the best meal and Profiterole was amazing.

Wonderful after all these years

Having come here more than 25 years ago this Restsurant is still excellent, great staff, wonderful food and good camaraderie. Don’t miss this experience!

Charming and friendly traditional italian restaurant

By jim b |

Booked a late table, and arrived to a packed house but we were quickly shown to a table for two in the corner. Attentive and knowledgeable waiters got it just about right. The food was very good my clams were served with a tomato and horseradish sauce which really worked and the tortellini was very good also. The stand out aspect was the friendly family restaurant feel and there were so many regulars there its clearly a repeat destination for locals. I thought the atmosphere was just right. Its been here for 60 years and I hope for another 60 - just a great warm experience !

Wonderful authentic Italian with welcoming service

By Tom A |

It's hard to find a great traditional Italian restaurant these day but Isle of Capri has been flying the banner of excellence in the category for decades. The host gets to know you and the waiters are knowledgeable. The meals are made with the finest ingredients, and the dishes are expertly prepared. A total delight.

Wonderful service and delicious food!

By aptinvt |

After an afternoon spent walking around midtown and Central Park, my wife and I stopped in for dinner. My sister had recommended the Isle of Capri and she did not steer us wrong! The service was wonderful and the food was authentically Italian and delicious. My wife had the pasta bolognese and I had the eggplant parmigiana and everything arrived in a timely manner and was cooked perfectly. Our waiter, Andres, was friendly and accomodating and brought us each a glass of prosecco to celebrate our anniversary.

Enter Italian Heaven in NYC

By DebSig |

Our group of 8 came from MA, RI, CT, DC, and Chi to visit with our New York family near the 59th St Bridge. Isle of Capri was the perfect place to make the moments last 🎵. We will always remember how we entered Italian heaven right on the upper east side. We were warmly welcomed on a cold February night by Sarah who escorted us to a round table in the softly lit and authentically decorated Italian dining room. Chianti and Pinot Grigio were served with bruschetta and Italian cheese. Perfect start to a delicious dinner. Salmone Caprese, veal Francese, Chilean bass, seafood, eggplant parmigiana and delicious pastas and salads. We followed our dinner with cappuccino and peach sorbet. Cannoli, tortoni, and other Italian desserts were shared around the table with ooohs and ahhhhs! What added beautifully to the fine setting and delicious dinner was the outstanding service. Our waiter was warm and attentive, checking often to see what he can do for us. One of the owners, Jane, came to our table and made us feel right at home. Her gracious manner allowed us to savor our time together. It was truly perfect in every way. Our evening at Isle of Capri was very special! It was a place to gather for delicious food and wine, lovely atmosphere and lively, heartfelt conversation. We will return often for more heaven on earth!

A good neighborhood place

By CuriousFlyer |

The food is good, the service is a little pushy, it is not cheap... If you live in the neighborhood and money is not an issue, fine. Otherwise if you are hungry and walk by it, fine too.

Terrific Italian dishes, with many fish offerings, in a lovely setting, with professional waiter service.

By Barbara G |

My family and I enjoy the dining experience in the enclosed areas off to the side. We prefer a quiet ambiance, rather than loud music. This restaurant affords us the perfect ambiance. I've had excellent fish dinners, with salmon, branzino, or chilean sea bass, and pasta dishes. This is authentic Italian cuisine. Portions are large, and the food is tasty. Waiter service is always courteous.

Great Old New York Classic

By Laurence M |

A magnificent restaurant that is one of the great New York originals still serving magnificent food in a warm and inviting East Side setting. I went often 30 or more years ago when my office was nearby and walked by it on my way home to my UES apartment. I moved offices several times over the years and thought it had gone the way of other classic originals. By chance, I walked by it on my way to visiting a friend and I was stunned to find Isle of Capri still occupying one of the best corners of Manhattan and still serving simply great, traditional southern Italian food. They don’t come cozier.

Heaven!

By Firebird1183 |

Family owned, small restaurant, cozy seating, right on the sidewalk, but inside - away from the hustle and bustle and cold weather. Very good service. Everything explained. Good menu, not too many specials to remember. Food was excellent. Fish delicate and mouth watering. Veal so tender the fork cut it! Terrific selection of wines and dessert and cookies great. We never felt rushed and would have stayed longer but we had to get home. Going back soon.

Disappointing Italian restaurant

By thegormandizer |

We went here after reading about it, and it seemed nice. Although it was fairly crowded, we were seated immediately. The service was outstanding with very knowledgeable waiters. The menu was typical for an Italian restaurant, and we went with some of the usual dishes. The service was impeccable, and the staff moved like a well oiled machine. The food, however, was mediocre at best. I ordered the lasagna, which came out flat! I have never had flat lasagna. Besides that, it was bland. My friend had penne, and they too thought that it was bland. The others said the same thing about their dishes. We had to all add salt to get some flavor, not what you expect from an expensive place. I would probably not return

Good food, service and drinks

By Geno1015 |

What a comfortable spot to eat some very good Italian food. The seating is a bit crowded, but average for NYC. The service and food were top-of-the-line.

Great Authentic Italian Food on Upper East Side, NYC

By FoundedNY1869 |

My family and I have eaten here over 100 times over the years. The Restaurant has been there over 30 years. The owner will greet you and make sure you come hungry and leave full. Every dish is great, the Staff is very nice. They have a private room you can watch people walk by. Very nice place. Tell Jane, Anthony sent you....

Delicious food and service

By marcyjanelucky |

I took my friends to the Isle of Capri tonight and it was outstanding! I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who is looking for good food and great service - along with the fantastic hospitality. The dinner and menu prices are amazing for NYC. I would recommend this for family and business dinners!! Loved it and looking forward to coming back.

Beautiful Atmosphere

By DaniC4590 |

Let me preface this with saying that I've been to Capri multiple times & this restaurant did NOT remind me of the beautiful island. HOWEVER - in its own right, I thought this restaurant was beautiful, inviting, warm, friendly, lovely, and traditionally Italian. I went for New Year's Eve dinner and experienced probably the best service I've ever had in a restaurant. The pasta was very fresh. I would definitely come again.

Horrible food and service

By lh6938NYNY |

I really wanted to like this traditional old school restaurant. Even though the decor and menu were extremely dated to say the least, I would have been happy with a nice Italian meal. However both the food and service were completely disappointing. Main course took over an hour which made us late for the movie and the food was pretty horrible. I ordered grilled red snapper which was dry and tasted fishy from the first bite. Nothing about this experience was even slightly acceptable. STAY AWAY!

Very Professional

By Al M |

Splendid lunch: freshly prepared veal rollatini, very tender, not drowning in sauce. Cozy atmosphere and old world ambiance create a relaxing experience. The service was impeccable as well.
