Sooooooo delicious!

By BaseballFan5 |

We were walking through Greenwich Village today and came upon JG Melon when looking for lunch. Didn't even know there was a location here. I have heard about it, but knew it was on the UES. We all ordered burgers, and they were absolutely amazing. When I bit into it, a ton of juice squirted out. Not sure what they are using for seasoning, but OMG, it is so good. This was probably one of the best hamburgers I have ever had. I will say it is a little pricey for the quantity, but hey, why not when on vacation! Can't wait to come back when in NYC again1

Still the best burgers in NYC!

By Mrsontour |

Love it here! Previously visited in 2015 and was so pleased to find the quality hadn't changed at all. Amazing burgers. Plus they were child friendly and had highchairs which was great!

Great Cheeseburger

By KennyG26 |

Visited my son in NYC. Had to have a great burger and Melon responded. Shared fries and had leftovers. Would highly recommend.

Burgermaster!

By Westlandgracht |

Each new city that I visit, I am in constant look out for that burger joint that creates that special burger which stays with you forever. When I reached New York, I asked around for which is the best burger joint in the city - I heard various names such as Shakeshack, Burger Joint etc. but then a friend said to me "You have not experienced the best burger in town if you have not been to J G Melon, and By God he was true! I went to the place twice and had the bacon cheeseburger both the times and boy, wasn't it heavenly? I would recommend having your burger 'Medium' or 'Medium-Rare' as 'Well done' takes a bit of the punch away. The burgers are really juicy and delicious. If you are not a burger person, you should try the 'Chilly', which, much to my surprise, turned out to be an absolutely delicious dish (looks can be deceptive here, people!). After the meal is done, if you are up for an uphill task, try to mouth watering, heavenly chocolate cakes...but I can assure you, in spite of your best efforts, after a burger like that, your efforts may fall short in finishing that monster! On the downside, the place does not accept credit cards, so you have to carry cash with you. In any other place, I would have looked at this as a big downside, but for a burger like that...Hell, I will go even if they ask to pay in unicorns...

Great food, nice friendly atmosphere.

By Debs041 |

They don't do reservations so we were unsure of getting in on a Saturday night, however, we were accommodated no problem by a really friendly table server at around 930 ish. Not a huge menu, but just what we wanted, traditional American food, well presented and well cooked, good choice of drinks. Nicely decorated, very clean, excellent service and food. What more would you want?

Great place for hamburgers !

By Dominique F |

Great restaurant in a very lively neighborhood. Great american cuisine - among the best hambugers I ever tasted. First come first serve seating !

Delicious juicy burger in a bustling restaurant

By cje291989 |

The burgers this place makes are outstanding, really juicy and delicious! The kitchen is tiny and you can see in as you walk past. They keep the menu simple but what they made is very good!

Deliciuos

By IlaTa90 |

A couple of friends that live in New York suggested us this restaurant. They didn’t fail: the best burger in New york. The place is quite small, but they have table inside or outside. The price is honest!

very good but too busy a place

By 75marcopolo76 |

One of the best burgers in town. Good fries, excellnt salads. But the waiting list is so long, the service so arrogant , the restaurant so noisy that you can ask yourself if there is not another more welcoming place to go.

Great Lunch

By Dianne B |

We had a lunch today...burgers and sandwiches. Very nice, clean restaurant with good food. Clean and the waiter was very attentive. You can sit outside or inside. I would recommend it for a lunch spot...good people watching corner.

Upper East Side Classic Burger

By BOCA VERITAS |

The burger quality is one of the best. My friends swear by the turkey burger and grilled cheese with bacon. I always like a spinach salad to start. No frills, long lines, surly waiters, and cash only. Your clothes and hands will smell like burgers after you leave. But it's a class UES neighborhood spot.

Finger Licking!

By Matin4 |

When you walk into this restaurant please do not be fooled by its appearance. This joint offers one of the best cheese burgers in town, and consider yourself extremely fortunate if you are seated quickly. This place is a gem on the Upper East Side in Manhattan. Finger licking food. Must try their cheese burger with fries and pecan pie. For kids I recommend the grilled cheese sandwich.

Busy, Lively, and Great Apple Sour Cream Walnut Pie!

By RenaissanceGirl2015 |

A fun, lively place for a tasty, moist cheeseburger. Attentive, friendly service, and the apple sour cream walnut pie was delicious.

Four stars for the burger

By hopfrog |

This place is a lively bar known for their excellent hamburger, and I've been there a number of times, but have never reviewed it. I generally get the burger (no cheese, rare), cottage fries, and a beer. Sometimes a salad, but not this time. This visit I came for lunch, around 11:45, and was one of the first to arrive. They soon filled up, though. I sat at the bar and got into a conversation with a retired fireman sitting next to me. There's nothing special about the beer or the fries, but the burger is great; one of the best in the city. They also have a plaid-tableclothed dining room in back where I've sat in the past. It's a friendly place, obviously dominated by regulars, but friendly to those who just drop in. Waters, waitresses and bartenders are professionals, not unemployed actors. I don't think they can handle large parties (except, perhaps, by pre-arrangement), but up to four would certainly be OK if you're just dropping in.

They Say the Original is the Best but Try the One in the Village

By slimK |

I have never eaten at J. G. Melon's located on the Upper East Side. (Always, way too crowded and no reservations.) However, I did have a very pleasant experience and a very good meal at the relatively new one in Greenwich Village. Of course, I had the cheeseburger which was cooked to perfection. My date had a burger and the chili which he declared scrumptious. The service was excellent and from what I understand far exceeds the service at the Upper East Side Melon's. So, give this J.G. Melon's a try... at least you can be sure to be seated!

Still great burgers at this NYC institition

By Belgo96 |

Look, don't come here if you are looking for a new shiny, hipster, or new aged franchise burger place. That isn't JG Melon's style. They are an old school burger joint with a bar in front and a small number of extremely cramped, close-together tables out the back. They don't take reservations and they take cash only. I've been here five times on five different visits to NYC and every single time the place has been heaving with people. What does that tell you?? They do good burgers. They don't look like much but they are tasty. They are served to you on no-fuss paper plates and with no serving style at all, but they taste great. Also great is the old-school berry pies loaded up with cream, if you have room for dessert. What I don't really like about JG Melon's is the cottage fries. I've avoided them ever since my first visit and do not feel like I miss anything by doing it. They are soggy and not that great. They burgers and desserts however are truly excellent. The same staff have been here for many years too, which is good. A visit to NYC is not complete for me unless I have a burger here.

Great burger experience

By James A |

Great burgers and cocktails, and their take on chips/fries- cottage potatoes (fried thin crinkle-cut potato) are a winner too. Service was prompt and friendly too, and if you can make it between 5 & 7 daily, it's happy hour!

Worth to visit

By May A |

Our friends told us about it and it worth it. The burger was juicy and delicious . The atmosphere was great . It's over budget little bit. We order two cheese burger and one fries with drinks total was 47.36.

Dinosaur owner

By Peter M |

Chose to drink and dine here as burgers were recommended on trip advisor - although I can't for the life of me understand why., lower than average in my opinion. However when I commented to proprietor that the Chilli that my wife ordered was not in the least spicy. He tried to defend the indefensible by saying no one likes spicy chilli. And if. Wanted could have added tobacco sauce ( which is awful product) Well no sir the proof of the pudding is actually in the name....Chilli......So in future at least have the common courtesy to explain your illogical argument, y That chilli is not meant to be spicy. Change your menu if you don't like the comparison.

I MISS YOU JGMELON

By Nayeli P |

After a long walk through central park, my wife and I were starving, so we decided to use an app to find a place that offered burgers, so we found this great treasure in Manhattan. The place is cozy, simple, and comfortable. The waitress's attention was a little regular, as there were a lot of people and they did not give you a good service. We ordered hamburgers and a steak, both delicious, and to finish, we ordered a cheese cake, which until today could not be forgotten, and I just want to return to ny, for another day in this great restaurant.

best burger in NY?? Yeeeees!!!

By Alvaro S |

Nothing else to say.. Simply the best burger in NY, and one of the best in my life ( if not the best...) My suggestion is to ask fro the classic one. Rare. Very tasty and fantastic bread. Also it seems to be very popular to order Bloody Mary at this place... but we didn't order it. Important to arrive quite early as it always bussy.

Great for place

By BIGBLUD |

Great surface, great burgers, great location . Went with family and 4 kids we were well received . Nice friendly staff. Good beer. And nice lighting.

Just OK and in the expensive side

By sc000000 |

Nice decor, good service, the burger was ok, rather small. The quality/price not so good. Cash only.

The Less On It, The Better

By Harvey M |

They have a delicious hamburger here that, in my opinion, does not need cheese and doesn't need bacon to be able to enjoy it to the maximum. The burger does that by itself. The other two toppings just mentioned just cover up the flavor of the burger. They do not take credit cards here.

Lunch

By ann |

Great fresh burgers with any type of cheese and topping. Fries cooked perfectly with no extra grease. Order it medium or rare and that's just how it comes.

Mini moon in New York

By RichardODriscoll |

Classic burger in this place is amazing. Service was quick and the price was very reasonable. Definitely would go back if in New York.

Don’t seat singles, apparently

By KTTSouthLondon |

Really surprised to be told that I can’t be seated for dinner as one (woman). Oh dear. Thought those days were over. If you’re a single lady in NYC, you’re business is not welcome! :-(

Awesome burger

By Kevin G |

My friends who live in NYC told me it was the best burger in town so I decided to see for myself. Now I'm not going to claim to have tried every burger in New York (although I'd like to) but I will say that it was in incredible burger. I literally ordered a bacon cheeseburger, ate it and was like "screw it, I'll have another." That's how good it was. I don't regret the decision either. I regret nothing! The atmosphere is nothing special and while the prices aren't expensive, they're not exactly cheap either. But if you want an awesome burger then hit this place!

Lives up to the hype

By WalkingDude1 |

Stopped in to try the cheeseburger because everyone insisted that it was on of the best burgers in NYC. It lived up to the hype...very good traditional style cheese burger. Beef was well seasoned and the grill man obviously knows what he is doing, because the burger had a nice crust, while remaining juicy. Because it has been in NYC for so long, I can understand why it has built a strong following. I would rate 5 stars, but I don't like "cash only" places. For one, it's suspect. Are you cheating on taxes or paying off the mob? It's no longer 1950, many people don't carry much cash and the rip off ATM in the bar area is also suspect. You won't lose any $$$ accepting debit and credit cards.

Best burger ever!

By LauraH250 |

This was my favourite meal during our trip to NYC. The burger patty was huge and beautifully cooked (I asked for rare). Buffalo lollypop chicken was also really good. Brilliant value, can't recommend the place enough!

No Cheese Needed

By Harvey M |

A delicious burger doesn't need enhancements in order to enjoy the meat. That is what they serve here, a tasty burger that is very good by its lonely self. There is no problem here for people by themselves getting a table. There is no prejudice against singles.

Very mixed

By Harleyclarkey |

We arrived with huge expectations. Mixed scores; A very busy and packed place. We were shoe horned into a corner and basically could not move! A very indifferent "wecome" from an unsmiling guy. Both a one The bar man was dismissive and inattentive.....also a one. Yes the meat patty is excellent very tasty and perfectly cooked....a five. Very overrated. We have had far, far better recently in Keene, Milford and Windsor recently for half the price. (three reviewed here) The cold bun was a one The $6 (!) fries were a one. Flipping rip off for half a potatoe and they were awful, too thin, barely warm and some overcooked. The rush to get us out was a one No....we would not rush back at all......been there done that and that was no great shakes.

Loved the burger

By RB Karl |

OK... so it is not a "fancy" burger - but this is not a "fancy" place. This is the "classic" drug store burger i remember from my childhood. I wish i was enjoying a JG Melon burger right now...

Good Happy Hour! Bloody Ordered "Spicy" Mary drink was disappointing.

By Melanie W |

Happy Hour 5-7. Drink options included $5 pint drafts of Stella or Bud Light, $7 Bloody Mary or $9 Manhattan or watermelon Cosmo. i ordered a Bloody Mary noting that I like it spicy. Quite disappointed that the only "garnish" was a lime wedge,(usually BM garnishes are notable-a celery stick or pickle is the minimal) and I would rate the "spiciness" as a "4" on a 10 point scale. I would not recommend their Bloody Mary. Shared the "hot mess" cottage fries, chili was tasty and the crispy cottage fries held up to the toppings. Four of us sampled the slider offerings; $15 for three sliders. I selected the Nacho Libre and RF-CBGB options, both were very tasty. The others in my group enjoyed the other options; we ordered two samplers. The service was quite attentive, the venue was less than 35% full.

A very good burger if you are in the area - but you must carry cash.

By Kerkwards |

My wife and I were wondering the streets on the first night of our arrival to NYC. Staying in a rented flat in Midtown E we soon stumbled across this establishment that had a line up at 9:00 pm. Taking this to be a good sign, we joined the line. It wasn't long before we were seated...long enough to stand at the bar and enjoy a cold one. While the service was fine, the manager was great. He took our names and called us by name even as we left. So you will be treated well upon entry. The waitress we had was fine - efficient, not very personable but polite. We ordered our meal consisting of two bacon burgers, fries (in the shape of chips), a house salad and two drinks. Our bill for the night (including a tip) was about $50.00 This small 75 seat dinner was cozy and filled with authentic New Yorkers who were winding down after work. No tourist trap here. The decor...well if you like seeing melons in various forms overhead then that is the place to be...otherwise, I found it to be a bit weird. Overall, we left satisfied. I wouldn't go out of my way to go there but if you are in the neighbourhood and in the mood for a tasty burger, it's not a bad place at all.

Something Is Missing!

By Harvey M |

Borrowing liberally a line from a 1962 Peter, Paul and Mary song, I ask, "Where has all the flavor gone"? I wrote two previous reviews praising their hamburgers here but the most recent hamburger I tried was lacking greatly in flavor and, in my opinion, would not not be a contender in a best of the hamburgers competition.

Great Hamburger in The Big Apple!!

By Abbysmaid |

Heard about JG Melon from Bobby Flay. He said it was his favorite hamburger place in New York City. On our recent trip we made a side trip from the Hop On Hop Off Bus Tour and checked it out. The place is SMALL, which made our wait time roughly 35 minutes...not too bad for a Saturday in December. While our hamburgers weren't anything impressively large or elaborate to look at, they were one of the very best hamburgers that we had ever eaten! Thick and juicy with a great beef flavor!! Felt a bit rushed by the waitress...nothing rude, but you could tell that the staff was just interested in moving tables. Glad we tried it, great burger, not sure that I would go there again on a future trip. I just like to enjoy the experience a bit more!!

Easy and good!

By andrea v |

Easy and good. We ate just an hamburger and it was nice. Staff was great and super kind. It's in one of the best area of NY

Average

By brookereid |

A couple of locals recommended this place so the burger bar in my mind was set pretty high. It was alright but so basic, very pub-like and outdated that I didn't see what the fuss was about. Don't go out of your way to go here but if you're ravenous and in the area, you may as well. Staff were nice though.

When You're Craving A Burger

By Emily Brillanti |

I've been to JG's many times and I always have a great experience there! While their burgers are not my favorite in the city, I do love the casual atmosphere and the service is always solid. I've only ever came for lunch and I typically get the Chili and share the burger with my husband. The food is pretty standard and basic, but I recommend you stop by if you are in Greenwhich and are looking for a casual, relaxed lunch or dinner spot!

Best hamgurgers and omelettes

By Edgardo K |

Wentt there for lunch with my family. Everybody was delighted. The hamburgers of superb quakity, the same to be said about the omelette. But the best surprise was one of the best prepared french fries we haver ever tried. Service was great and prices very reasonable.

UES side location is the best.

By Chicca107 |

We have always been at the ues location and enjoyed a great meal and a friendly atmosphere. The MacDougal location instead, waiters were nasty, rushing us the entire meal almost inviting us to leave 3 seconds after the end of the burger. There was not even the line of people waiting for a table so there was not reason at all to treat us like this. We are definitely not coming back to that location and keep going to the ues.

Pretty decent burger, but far from a great burger.

By JML7 |

Dropped by this place before I had to head out of the city for a good burger at the recommendation of a door man who knows the area fairly well. It is a small place, and a nice enough environment. The manager and waitress were polite. I ordered a bacon cheese burger and it was fairly decent. The problem is that when I go to a place known for it's burgers, I expect a good sized burger. What I received was a tiny kids sized burger on a the same bun that you would pick up in a 6 pack at the supermarket, being sold under the cheap store name brand. If you are going to be known as the place in the city to get a great burger, for $12, give me a good sized burger with a good sized bun! It was a decent burger, but honestly, I have had better burgers at Applebees. I also find that when a place does not accept credit cards, and charges you $4 for a tiny soda, without free refills, it makes them look greedy, and leaves me feeling a bit annoyed. (given that a cup of soda ends up costing a restaurant less than 10 cents a glass.

Great service and food

By wensby |

Extremely pleased with the service and the food in the restaurant. Affordable prices for going out. Had the bacon cheeseburger and the rest of my party had the fried chicken sandwich. Everyone was pleased.

73rd & 3rd

By Mary S |

Tiny and crowded, but the best no frills burgers in town. You must go for an early lunch or else wait for a table and not much space to do that! We sat at the bar to eat and were highly entertained by Bobby, the bartender who works Fri-Mon. In a city where you would never have to go to the same restaurant twice, I will definitely visit here again.

Overrated and disappointing

By Regina V |

We heard this was a great place to try on 3rd Avenue. The seating hostess said "I'll let you know how long the wait will be"... and never did. She said that to everyone apparently. 45 minutes later she seated the 2 of us at a table. The waitress seemed to be exhausted. The burger was nothing special... even a little dry, not a whole lot of flavor even with the cheese and bacon. The cheesecake tasted like it had been frozen and defrosted. The check was barely legible. We won't return there. Save your time and money and go somewhere else.

Not great, but more than adequate

By Twyford |

JG burger: cooked well, but small for the money and not a great deal of flavor; perfect bacon. Does not come with anything except some boring pickle chips and red onion, not even a piece of lettuce.. Cheap! Outdoor eating on a warm night very pleasant, but chairs are metal and not comfortable. Hard to get attention from wait staff and the "bus boy" was almost mute, no smiles, no personality! As burgers go in NYC it was adequate. Would not return.

Yes!

By momdadplus |

This restaurant lives up to the hype. This is the place to get a burger. Don’t forget the cottage fries!

REQUIRED DESTINATION EVERYTIME WE VISIT

By Jim F |

Thousands of restaurants in NYC but JG Melon is one our favorites for BURGERS and Cottage Fries. Pies are great. You won't be disappointed. WARNING: NO CREDIT CARDS, CASH ONLY!!!

Nice little bar and good food

By John R |

Nice little cozy bar nice atmosphere people are friendly, the food is awesome, the service is fast they want to move you in and out, so they could get the table ready for the next person, But when I'm in the city its a must stop. A mixed drink is eight or nine dollars in a little glass Cheers.

the best burger in nyc

By SmallCharme |

it an easy location and the service is very good and quick. burgers are really fantastic (excellent meat quality) and the dish size is similar to european standards (i.e. relatively small burgers and top quality).

Amazing Burgers!

By Enrique G |

Best hamburgers and best deal in town. Fast paced sit down restaurant in the Upper East Side. Ask for the fries. If the place is full it is worth to stand by the bar and have a drink while having a conversation with the friendly regulars.

Dinner and Comedy

By David B |

My wife and I came for dinner on a Tuesday evening before going to the Comedy Cellar for the rest of the evening. But before I entered I got to see Seth Meyers on the street with his parents. We had the house salad, those delicious fries and cheeseburgers, washed down with cold pints of 🍻 beer. Great bartender and the food came out pretty fast. Vibrant crowd just like when I went to the original location on the UES when I was 10 y o. Cheers

Good food, great atmosphere, tremendous service

By Joe D |

So I went to J.G. Melon after being unable to get in to Carbone a few blocks away. Non-pretentious, great food (some of the best hamburgers in the world) and fantastic french fries. I love this place, love the service and will be back.

50/50

By mortyd |

a terriific addition to the village. we are long time patrons of the 3rd av. orginal and are delighted to review this new addiion, and our decision; a draw. the excellent burgers are stil excellent, as is the chil which is now served with sour cream on the side. if anything, the cottage fries are crisper but the oversweet magnolia deserts aren't close to wasting the calories on. and, the lines are MuCH SORTER here.

A good hamburger!

By SeverissimoPalato |

A good experience, nice meat good combination, staff very friendly and place in a really nice and wellty area!

Brilliant blast from the past burgers

By William L |

Delicious burgers and fries served characterfully (don't argue with the staff - be nice and they're great) in a wonderfully timeless setting. Portion size is good rather than feeling you don't want another burger for a year or more. Overall best burger I've had in NYC.

Quick, tasty food.

By CodaCadenza |

Visited this restaurant after a long day of travelling. The service was incredibly quick, and the happy hour special is great value. The food was really enjoyable.

BEST BURGER IN TOWN

By richard_yas |

Cant visit New York and forget to pass by “JG MELON” .. Lovely warm atmosphere …always crowded, you have to wait 5 minutes or more to find you a place to sit.but it deserves to wait…a scene with Meryl Streep and Dustin Hoffman was filmed at the restaurant in 1979..one of the oldest places who serves typical American burgers established in 1972 .try the burger with cheese and bacon yumm yumm…recommended for someone who loves and appreciate food tastes..

Nice spot for lunch

By AnanB |

We had lunch here during our trip to Greenwich Village. The service was friendly. OH had the burger which he enjoyed. My chicken salad was great, lots of meat. The waitress was nice and friendly and the price wasn't too bad.

Very comfortable bar

By robcurtross |

The bartender was an absolute delight, indicating that if we were good and loyal customers and if the staff liked us, we might get to have our names posted one of the small golden signs above the bar. He thought it "highly unlikely" in my case. :) Very good cleanliness, including the men's room. Beer served very cold and from an extensive list including a number of draft beers. Two other patrons said that the hamburgers were delicious. I will be back to test further.

Longstanding Neighborhood pub style restaurant with outdoor seating

By FrequentTraveler333 |

Hard to believe this restaurant has survived for so many years and relatively unchanged. Still a great neighborhood place for casual food, nice little area outside with tables, reasonably priced for Upper East Side (which is not necessarily reasonably priced elsewhere in the country). $10 for a burger basically. Clientele seems to have changed over the years - used to be more middle aged neighbors...now quite a few young people. Gets noisy inside and tables and chairs crowded into small space...which you can either view as adding to the atmosphere or somewhat annoying. People like their burgers...I'm not a burger person, but still can have a salad ($14). Anazing that they don't take credit cards in this day and age.

Exquisite Burgers

By Christopher S |

The burger is worth 5 stars, the service/environment where someway off that. But when you're going for a burger, ultimately you just want to get your hands on the tastiest, juiciest piece of meat wrapped in a bun that you possibly can - lets face it, with so much competition these days, there is little excuse for an under par burger. The burger at J. G. Melon is honestly one of the best I have ever eaten. "How would you like that cooked" should be the first question on the lips of any wait(er)(ress) once you have requested "the burger, please". Personally the best and most polite response to this is always "medium rare", it shows them you appreciate good meat :). I used to think that in this day and age there was no excuse for not using a brioche bun, however J. G. Melon changed my mind; whilst the bun wasn't brioche, it was a far cry from the flake seeded bun of yester-year.The bun was well textured and added something to the taste, whilst taking nothing away from the burger. There was nothing I could fault about the food. The menu was limited, which in my opinion is a refreshing move away from the all too common attitude in the U.S of put every possible food we can think of on the menu. You know what your going to be getting when you go there so dont head there if you're looking for Quesadillas or Salmon en-Crote. The staff spent a lot of time socializing with each other and with whoever was on the other end of there phone which was frustrating when trying to get attention but I'll give the benefit of the doubt as we did head for a meal right between lunch and dinner. Positives; Food, Location & old burger joint feel. Negatives: Deflated staff attitude, If there would be just one thing I could add to the menu, I would say get some milkshakes on there. It is in keeping with the traditional ethos, but plenty of people like to have a milkshake with their burger. Whilst I'm not one of them my girlfriend is.

Great burger but not exceptional

By Karine G |

We take cheeseburgers with fries. The meat was really great and well cookes. But with only cheese, onion and pickles to add in the burger. I would like to have tomatoes or lettuce also. The bun was normal. The fries are great

Very Good!

By Giacomo C |

I really like this place, the burgers are really good, the quality of the meat is really high, and the atmosphere is nice. It's usually crowded but we didn't have to wait long to be seated...It is not very expensive I think, I would say average for NY City! Only negative point: they do not accept credit cards (at least they didn't last time I was there!), we didn't know it so we had to go and get some cash...not a big deal, just be prepared!

Amazing burger

By Candice H |

Definitley recommend for the burger, one of the best in NYC. Service is a bit rushed and a little rude but the food makes up for it.

Great Burgers!

By 970alexanderp |

What a treat to eat at J G Melon's. A classic cheeseburger and cottage fries is a meal sent straight from heaven.

Good burgers!

By Claire |

On a warm evening this is a lovely place to eat outside and soak up the atmosphere in Greenwich Village. Our burgers were small but well cooked to order and I liked having the salads etc to one side to fill it according to your liking. I really enjoyed the red wine from the specials list and the fries too.

Wonderful Burger

By connie t |

Went for lunch after Sunday 11am church. Wonderful cheese burger and fries. Arrived about 12.30 and seated immediately. Very friendly staff.

One of the best

By willsoncast |

Cozy place that serves great burgers and chilly cup. Very crowded during all the week. Pay attention is cash only!

Man that's a burger!

By Sam T |

Having set the challenge of; where in the land of the burger is a good burger. I have to say I was impressed. It's not midtown so maybe not so obvious for the tourist. However, make the trip. It's a only a short cab ride. The restaurant has a great feel. A good bar greets you on entrance and in the summer a few tables outside offer some sight of the sunshine. The slightly cramped interior though adds to the atmosphere and the place buzzes, possibly in anticipation of the food to come. On a table of six we ordered six burgers and cottage potatoes. So that's what I'm reviewing. Although a simple menu promises good quality across the board. The burgers were GREAT! Simple but not over engineered. Lots of places fall into that trap. It doesn't have to have weird toppings just be a good burger. J G Melon does that superbly. Make the effort, taste the burgers and stay in the area for a great bar or two. Definitely worth the taxi fair.

Cash only but priceless

By Shaina K |

Sat at the ‘west end’ of the bar with best-hands-in-the-business Bobby. Grilled cheese + bacon/tomato, hot toddys. ✔️💚

Awesome

By Almuso |

Great place, great burger and great service, the waiter recomend us the burger, the chicken bbq and my wife and daughter where no to hungry and she recomended to share the chicken sandwich and she was right, we all enjoy it

Overrated

By Claire D |

I was in NYC with some friends, and we heard that J. G. Melon was Gigi Hadid's favorite burger place so we had to go. Five of us headed down to their upper east side branch, and the service was really disappointing. The receptionist had told us we had to wait for 40 to 45 minutes for a table and so we did. We walked around and got back within 30 minutes to find the receptionist frustrated saying that he had been calling our name, when he said to get back within 40 minutes. Other events happened, but we finally got the table, we all got some sort of burger, which were good but I wouldn't say the best. They were generous with the pattie, but the burger came quite bare with only onions, pickles and cheese. It felt hastily made, and even though service was quick it felt as though they were in rush to kick us out to get the next customers in. The space was crowded and the servers kept trying to squeeze in between the chair sometimes pushing us over. Also it was a bit pricey for just a small burger. I may be biased because of the unwelcoming receptionist, but I think that you could definitely find a better burger place.

GREAT NEIGHBORHOOD SPOT !!!

By ram9572017 |

We stumbled across this gem by chance...The other establishments in the area were crowded and noisy, and had a wait. Since we only wanted a few cocktails we popped in and what a great find it was. The Bartender was friendly and a good mixer !! We didn't eat but someone came in and had a burger at the bar...Well I tell you...I'm going back for one..It looked delicious and the "fries" were cooked to perfection....Try it out, you won't be disappointed.

A Greasy Relic

By JoanieBBeth |

Crowded preppy atmosphere, looking for Holden Caufield. What worked back in the day is over now. I remember loving their burger, which now must be griddled in the same grease from the era of "Grease". Indifferent service, no water, and cash only make for an unfriendly start. Fries are sodden ovals reeking of oil, hamburger ordered medium rare came out well-done on cold toast with those horrible pickle chips which must glow in the dark, Same chilly temperature for bacon and toast in the turkey club. Very disappointing. The next time I crave a yummy. juicy burger, I'll head back to Jackson Hole.

Still the best

By DadMD |

The hamburger is simply great. It is what a hamburger should be. Cooked perfectly at medium, which is usually overcooked. There was a rumor that the Cottage Fries were not available. Not true! The fries were fantastic. They also do preorder and pickup if you want to eat at home.

Outdoor seating for people watching

Good location to watch people roaming around Greenwich Village. Worst turkey burger ever! Slippery patty slapped on a mushy bun, nothing else. Beer here is OK.

A Truly Delicious Burger

By diana z |

Let me begin by saying I have to have my cheeseburgers VERY WELL DONE...so anyplace that can do that and still have the burger be moist has to be doing something right!!! Have always gotten the cheeseburgers cooked to perfection at Melon's. The restaurant still is full of the upper east side locals, both young and old.....young, middle aged and older "preppies"----you know what I mean....the loyal crowd that would not even consider anything but the perfect burger at Melon's!!! There are many other choices on the menu, chicken, steaks, chili ( also excellent), salads, etc., but the burgers remain SUPREME! Cash only but that helps keep the prices " reasonable " for the upper East Side establishment. Always busy, but have never had to wait more than 15 to 20 minutes for a table .....some things are worth the wait.....you will not be disappointed.

5 stars for me.

By Jasmin N |

Yes, I know. it's super crowded and people always feel like they have to take one star down for it. I say - if it's so full all the time, they're must be doin something right. An old school NY experience. I just LOVE it. Try it at least once. Very good Burgers and unforgatable chili cup.

Delicious hamburger! ...

By raymun777 |

Had lunch there with friends. The burger were delicious but lacking of tomato and lettuce. May be should have asked. In my opinion, for the price a small order of fries or salad could be included. Decor and ambiance was great. It looks like it is a pleaser for the locals. Fun people watching! Overall great. Very nice ambiance... And love all the watermelon art all around! Would go back!

Top hamburger

By Roberto G |

J.G.Melon is not going to make it to the top fifty any time soon, but it is a great place to visit for a good hamburger. OK, so you’ll have to wait a long time for a table in a cramped bar. Then they’ll sit you somewhere in the corner and refuse your credit cards. But some people say they serve the best hamburgers in NYC. Or is it the world? And why not?

Late Night Burger

By dennis927 |

Stopped in with my wife late night in late December for a drink at the bar. Couldn't resist ordering a cheeseburger. Cooked as ordered and juicy. Always crowded. Always noisy. But still one of the best burgers in NYC at a reasonable price.

Best Burgers in New York

By Zahid & Malti Khan |

Following recommendations from multiple locals, five of us decided to try JG Mellon one typically crowded evening. The no reservations and cash only notice was unusual but long line of people waiting for a table on a mid-week evening gave a good indication of its popularity. The taste test proved it deserves the reputation as the burgers were the best that we have tried in New York so far. Worth experiencing.

Enjoyed lunch at the bar

By Dagny33028 |

Stopped into JG Melon for lunch and enjoyed the experience. This is a traditional NY bar/restaurant with a fun, casual atmosphere. The burgers are terrific, very "homemade" tasting and juicy. The chili was spicy and meaty, I could have easily had a second bowl. We sat at the bar and the bartender had a great sense of humor and was very attentive. This is a cash only establishment, but the prices are inexpensive so you won't have to hit the ATM too hard.

Would recommend - but quite frantic

By Annie K |

This was recommended to us by a friend who had lived in NYC for many years. We didn't have a reservation but were seated immediately on a busy Saturday evening. Having said that it is not a place you would come to for a romantic evening. It was very much quick-in, quick-out. Food was very good and arrived quickly. Service was prompt and friendly. Prices not cheap but good value. Overall would recommend.

Burgers!

By vwmom2 |

Juicy burgers, perfectly grilled, crunchy outside and just the right done-ness! Loved the fries. Nice selection of beers, too.

Wonderful hamburgers

By E2IK |

It was all packed, and we had to wait for more than one hour. So it gave us the opportunity to have an aperitif in another place. You can only pay in cash. The hamburger was really tasty. Really well done. I really enjoyed this hamburger. We understand what is so full. Perhaps the restaurant has the tables to near to each other.

Maybe it was an off night?

By emme45 |

Our burgers didn't match with what other reviews have raved about. It was overcooked and overpriced for the portion size. The place was packed, and the service friendly, I'm just hoping ours was an exception (?).

Good burgers

By LAFAMILLEG11231 |

Local pub style restaurant. Good for families groups couples. Great burgers and local dishes. Fun atmosphere.

Amazing

By klevitt92 |

Hands down best burger ever. It holds up very well for delivery too if you are lazy to go out to the actual restaurant . My go-to , once a week

Great bar!

By FleurDeLis1222 |

We made a sentimental stop here because my husband's family grew up in the neighborhood. We didn't have time for a burger, but we did enjoy a round of drinks at the bar. Their draught beer selection was pretty good and the wine/liquor selection is solid. We also really enjoyed talking to the older female bartender- she was really helpful, very funny, and an unbelievable multi-tasker! Next trip, we're definitely making time for a burger here.

DON'T BOTHER

By K C |

Small and dingy place. Not much room between tables. Service stunk. Waiter was curt, unfriendly and put an extra $10 on our bill! He did correct it when I told him but acted like he already knew it was wrong. Burger was mediocre. You get nothing extra with it. Omelet was over cooked. Plenty of other places to go for a burger in Manhattan. Don't waste your time here.

Great burgers

By robcurtross |

Cottage fries are exceptional. Laid back neighborhood favorite. Very good service and very clean. Cash only. Most surveys include Melons as best in NYC for burgers.

Very good Cheesburger!

By 8Giac6 |

Do Not expect a big exausting Hamburger! Here is the quality that is the mos important thing! I got the Burger with Cheese and Bacon and was absolutely outstanding! Surely a place to go while being in NYC.

Tasty Burgers

By Travelers |

I've tried a great deal of hamburgers from all over the world and J.G Melon is in my top 5. If you need a quick hunger fix and want a decent meal then I recommend J.G Melon. They also serve a great deal of other dishes but they're renown for their burgers particularly as Gigi Hadid made claim that they were the best burgers in NYC.

Great burger place in the Village...

By vb333 |

Love this place (and also the original on the Upper East Side)...they serve some of the best burgers in NYC! The food is good, staff friendly and the service is super quick! It's a real no frills, no fuss place...so don't expect fine dining, just great hearty food. They don't take reservations and it's also cash only. The burgers taste great cooked medium, and although the cottage fires don't look much...they taste incredible!! Definitely worth a visit if you're in the city.

A long walk!

By Kay W |

A good enough meal but the place is a little cramped to say the least and the table right next to the toilet is not the best. Food good enough but nothing special and we were in and out in about 45 minutes - fast food but more expensive. Tip - they only accept cash so no cards.

Excellent burgers, fun time in interesting setting.

By Jeff B |

Fun time with family at an interesting burger joint in NYC. Kind of pricey, but happy hour specials made it reasonable. Waitors were helpful and the setting was cool not fancy.

Very Good Burger!

By Dario Z. |

We were there because of all the reviews. And the burger was actually not bad. We were really happy with our joice.

Great grilled cheese and bacon!

By Bi-coaster |

We had lunch at this burger and salad joint and my spouse loved his grilled bacon and cheese. Cottage fries were just okay. My turkey burger arrived with a patty that was twice the size of the bun--ate half of it. Good place for a casual meal.

Old Time New York Burger / Pub Experience

By deeshootsit |

This is your classic NYC Pub - Burger Experience. You come for the ambience, no frills & location. This burger reminds me of the frying pan burgers my grandmother would cook for me when I was a child. Thick burger with a great char on the outside. When you bite in you get pure meat with fat run off that will coat your mouth. No fancy toppings or condiments. Pickles and raw onions accompany your burger. This place is great for NY nostalgia - however it's not my favorite burger in NYC or even in the top 3. They serve salads, chili , sandwiches and other entrees (if a burger is not your thing) - it does remind me of Old NY and it's s solid place to grab lunch. cash only

Top notch burger

By Riddoch88 |

Had a cheese and bacon burger and a side of fries which were delicious. Unlike many places, the burger is not huge, but this is made up for by the quality. Two minor gripes - no shakes and no egg with your burger.

Great food!

By Antonio S |

Fantastic burgers, really tasty. Small and retro place, always crowdy. Only cash payment, no credit or debit cards. Friendly staff

Good, but over-hyped

By Bright27 |

I was drooling at the sound of these burgers and we went in search of them especially, but I was a little underwhelmed. It's always packed, and we waited for a table for 25 minutes (it can be longer in busy times). Once seated, there was no big rush to take our order, although the the staff were nice. The burger choice was very limited, they were on the small side (not small, just not indulgent) and although they were good they weren't great. The cottage fries were nice but average too.

You can do better

By Funtimes522 |

Forget these burger reviews. You're better off at TGI Friday's. It's dirty, loud, our waiter didn't know the beer list and I had diarrhea after eating here. It's a NO!

Fabolous!

By ChaS |

This might be the best burger I have ever eaten!! Fantastic staff, everything was perfect! Thank you!

Good but small burgers

By Beatriz G |

The beef was amazing but the size was too small... and being a girl I was in a point where one was too small and two was too much. Anyhow, it was good... potatoes could have been better and the glass of soda bigger for the price.

TOTAL TOURIST TRAP!

By johnfD8600OC |

This place is a joke...GF had the Grilled Cheese which consisted of two thin slices of White Bread with two slices of Yellow American Cheese. $9 (sides extra)...I had the chicken Sandwich which while tasty was about 4 inches long ($12.95), looked like a children portion and our friend has a cheese burger for $12.95 (maybe 4 ounces if that)... All served with NO sides...two orders of Cottage fries were $6.00 each... If you check my other reviews you will see we have NO problem going to high end restaurants and paying through the nose...but to pay those prices for what is essentially diner/pub food is ridiculous. In fact there are about 3 diners within walking distance of this tourist trap that have better food, bigger portions all for much less money.. Oh and BTW the manager was useless...just stood around...I waved my hands for 5 minutes trying to get his attenting and he just looked right through me...guess they don't want or need the locals coming in...
