Unfortunately this restaurant did not live up to expectations.... Even though we were nicely greeted, food did not deliver. We ordered a mixed greens salad with goat cheese that was ok on the dressing side, the bread on the goat cheese was toasted but not fresh... the bread they served with butter was also not fresh... probably frozen and mot properly unfrozen! My wife had the steak au poivre with the poivre on the side, she ordered medium rare and the steak came medium plus.... Flavor was ok but the au poivre was well below par! French fries also below par! I did have a steak sandwich medium rare that came almost ok cooked but also over cooked. The bread was soft and not crunchy! Mistake! The meat was not a whole piece, also a mistake! Flavor was not good..... actually maybe the second star was a plus for them.... All in all, will not be back here.... Sorry!!! Cheers

This is a little gem on the upper East Side. Moderately priced by area standards and full of charm. Calamari was different from any we've ever tasted and was so worth going outside our comfort zone. Bouilabaisse special was "scrumdillyicious".

This is a very low key place and it is close to Sotheby's. So if you are at an auction and need to grab a bite, or if you are in that neighborhood for any other reason, this is the place to stop by. It is not at all pricey. It is small and cozy, but they have a very good chef. The French onion soup and the salads have a little something extra and the steak frites are great.

A very small bistro with a wonderful chef.....skate, cod and hanger steak, as well as onion soup, can't be beat----even in Paris. Staff is very accomodating and prices are very reasonable, perhaps while the 2nd ave subway keeps rents down. Can be quiet unless a "rude" table occurs, but that is NYC, unfortunately.

We spent a delightful moment with friends at Jean Claude 2. The food was excellent and Kamel the owner is a very nice guy. I highly recommend this restaurant as the high quality food is tasty and well prepared. Thank you very much Kamel. We will come back for sure.

Manhattan is notorious for overpriced, mediocre food and my first experience here was no exception. I ordered the duck and vegetable risotto. The duck and sauce had almost no flavor and they forgot the risotto entirely. The server didn't check on me so I had to flag him down to ask for it. When it arrived it had more flavor than the duck but was still just okay. I was also charged more than the menu price. When I asked about it the owner said they'd raised their prices a couple of months ago. This could be perfectly innocent - it's expensive to print new menus or they haven't gotten around to it - or it could be legit shady. Either way, it left a very bad taste in my mouth after an already not great experience.

What a delightful surprise to find such an authentic Parisian restaurant right here in the Big Apple!!! Our dinner was simply DELICIOUS! The scallops were perfectly cooked and so sweet! My Steak Au Poivre was tender, cooked just how I like and and the sauce was outstanding. Of course the pomme frites were crisp on the outside and soft on the inside as they are suppose to be. The salad that comes with it had a fabulous tasting dressing. What makes it even better is the cost of each item is very very resonable. My steak was very large and was $26.The desert of Apple tart was so authentic. We had 2 glasses of wine and a beer and the check was under $100. What a wonderful evening in a quaint parsian dream!!!

Small but cozy. Not typical French cuisine. The food is very good. We had mussels, skate, cod and duck, all delicious. Very attentive service. The place seems to be popular as it starts filling up at around 6 pm and is nearly full by 6:45.

Popular Upper East Side small restaurant that fills up early with the local crowd. My spouse thought the beet and endive salad with walnuts was superb and he loves beets! My roasted cod over vegetable risotto napped with a yellow pepper purée was very tasty also. He ordered the skate which was a bit dry. Service by an all male wait staff was efficient.

The escargot, onion soup, duck, pate and bread pudding were excellent. Fresh, nice presentation and ample portions. Would definitely return. make reservations, place is small and fills quickly for dinner.

In search for an alternative to Italian cuisine, we happened upon this relaxed, informal French bistro. The other patrons in this moderate sized space appeared to be locals who frequent this cozy restaurant. The service was professional and friendly. Wines are sold by the bottle and glass and are reasonably priced. The food (I had duck breast) was tasty but the portions are on the smallish size. Overall we enjoyed our first experience at Jean Claude 2.

This is a quaint restaurant, very french, very non tourist with wonderful food and attentive wait staff. The duck is beyond compare - truly the best I have ever eaten. Prices are reasonable for NYC.

first, the wines were subpar and in small portions. the escargot were bitter and small. the loin of lamb was covered in a syrupy sweet sauce. the codfish and snapper were much better.

A new branch of Soho landmark French Bistro, with few staff moved Uptown. Better seating, similar solid French comfort food with great wine choices. Great for brunch also. No loss of value and quality. No need to venture to Downtown. Accepts credit cards.

This was my 2nd dinner here in 3 weeks. Both meals were lovely. This is a pleasant, unpretentious restaurant with very well done food, a lovely menu, good wine, good service and reasonable prices. On Friday, every seat was taken. People seems happy. The mood in the place is relaxed and content. Re really loved our meal.

Had a great time in this cute little restaurant. Family group of seven went and everyone ordered something different. All well prepared except for the pork which was too dry. The rest was really superb. Service was attentive and friendly. We were not at all rushed. Prices quite reasonable.

Jean Claude will definitely become a regular destination for us! Amazing food, wonderful service and it is perfectly priced. Started with mesclun salad followed by a wonderful cod. Bread pudding was a spectacular dessert!! Very friendly and attentive service. DELICIOUS!!!!!!

Went to JC2 last night. Busy inside and outside. They have expanded their food print so separation between customers was excellent. More importunely the food was excellent. Ordered a bottle of wine, fair priced. Then both of us ended up ordering the cod. Of course the cod was excellent....its one of the reasons who used to go to JC2 regularly. The only downside is that they for some reason cancelled our Open Table reservation. Will contact them later about this. Oh we had the chocolate mousse for dessert. It was great. Come and visit and help a local great stay on its feet. And for those who are from out of town....NY is open, it is safe and the restaurants are open and working hard.

Always great food and great service.one of our favorite restaurant in the area.the owner is always making sure you are having a good time with out being too pushy.and waiters very polite and helpful

We were two couples on a quiet summer Sunday night. The place was a little over half full and empty by 9:00 pm. Our dinner was really good. The wine list is interesting and compact, and amazingly reasonably priced. Between us we had the mussles, pork loin special, steak frites and baked cod. Also terrific gazpacho to start. I can recommend any of them. Good ambiance and service. Maybe not for a special trip, but a terrific neighborhood place and we will be back.

Back again to JEAN Claude 2. Had the Cod again. Just amazing. Will go back soon and this time we will try to order something other than the cod. But I probably won’t. Inside seating is terrific. They have outside as well. Seating increases to 35% soon. So get out there and help these folks out. One of the best things about NYC is being able to walk a few blocks and eat at a great local restaurant. Beats driving to Olive Garden and waiting with a beeper.

Excellent service; superb dinner; nice wine selection; modest prices. Looking forward to return turn trip when we come into New York City.

We have been here before and ordered the cod as well. The quality is fine but the taste can be improved. The taste can be improved by putting the cod in salt water before cooking. It is a bit tasteless. The starter Foie Gras was very good and we enjoyed a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc. We will be back.

This is a little gem. I have been there before and this visit confirmed my initial impression. The atmosphere is low key, casual. Service friendly and excellent. Food well prepared and well priced. Top dishes at our table were the skate and the lamb (although the lamb portion which was the special was a little on the small side). Good bread, nice desserts.

The bread had a hair in it and was not fresh. The cauliflower soup was served at approximately 1 degree below boiling, yet (surprise!) when it cooled it had practically no flavor. The steak from the steak frites reminded me of those breakfast steaks my Dad used to eat in the 70s (only thicker). Even the house white wine was mediocre. Pas encore merci!

Friendly and nice service. Very fair prices. The wine was good as well. Ordered the beet salad with endive. That was underwhelming and tasteless and not worth it. Very disappointing. Wife had the mussels and frites, which she said was good but not as tasty as our regular place. The roast chicken was way too salty for me and too dry. The basil mashed potatoes were tasty but over whipped into a starchy mess. The chicken was supposed to come with mushrooms and a nice sauce. There was basically no sauce and two tiny slivers of mushrooms. Pretty room and quiet so you can have a conversation. But it was not a dining experience I would try again.

A very cold day in NYC, hungry people wanting to eat at a new place. We found Jean Claude 2 and read the menu and liked what we saw. We had a very nice lunch, pretty standard prices for UES, but very satisfying and tasty. My friend had the omelette which she said was superb; I surprised myself and ordered a burger. Perfect burger: not so lean that there was no taste; not overcooked; nice charcoal flavor. Served with Fries. I would return again for a fast feeling of a Parisian bistro. Nice, competent, friendly waiter who was professional and not cloying.

Can't say enough good about this little French restaurant. I had zucchini soup and a salad - both were outstandingly fresh and flavorful, with the salad dressing especially delicious. My friend had the skate entree - I had a bite, also delicious. Service friendly and efficient and the prices were surprisingly reasonable. Highly recommended.

We sat in a table in the sidewalk outside the restaurant for dinner, the restauranon was nice , clean and neate. I asked for a salmon, which was very good.

A neighborhood gem with good tasty dishes, all French style. Service is good and so are the wines, especially the Malbec by the glass. More importantly, the food is really good - meaning the steak is tender and tasty with a very nice, reach sauce. In a nutshell: a pleasure to dine there. A place you should try. Reservations recommended.

I first visited Jean Claude’s about five years ago. It is a neighborhood bistro about 2 blocks from my sisters apartment. I flew up to New York this week to be with my sister for an operation and when she was released we had dinner here. It is a small, narrow place with good ambiance and a very attentive wait staff. It caters to the locals and we noticed obvious repeat customers. The food is excellent. I had the steak in pepper sauce and it was excellent as were the fries came with it. I also had their delicious french onion soup. We had the house Bordeaux which again we couldn’t fault. A nice quiet place with great atmosphere, good food, and reasonable prices. What more could you want?

We wanted to try a new in our case an old restaurant and remembered JC2. We had the cod and the chicken and were very pleased with both dishes and in our book or rating a 5. The ambience is alright. We did however get, due to no pre reservation, the worst table in the venue, very close to the toilet and kitchen. Pricing was reasonable. We will probably come back.

Stopped in on a cold February and had a great lunch. The grilled portobello sandwich was delish and my husband had the croque monsieur. A beer and a glass of cote du Rhone and we thought we were on the Left Bank of Paris.

I love this restaurant! It has great charm, amazing food and a relaxing environment. My husband and friends all had the hangar steak, and it was juicy, cooked well and they all wanted more. I had the cornish hen with risotto, amazing! Oh, and how can I forget the mesculin salad and the goat cheese, I need to know what they serve, I want to being some home! When you go, make sure you save space for the desserts, the creme brulee, the chocolate mousse, OMG!!!!!! I can't wait to go back, the price is great and doesn't need to be kept for a special occasion.

Although not listed with Zagat, this Frence restaurant on 2nd Ave between 70th & 71st Streets is a good find. We've been for dinner twice, and each time the food was quite good. The ambiance is okay, the waitstaff is very good - even the cleanup crew is good, but the food is the draw for us. The dinner menu is very good.

Went for Sunday Brunch and stayed for hours. Lovely setting, great service, and the salmon was excellent!!!

My wife and I stopped in here for a Saturday lunch because it was convenient, and were pleasantly surprised. It's a small, narrow place, and the 2nd Ave location seems like there's always construction nearby, but inside the restaurant, all was well. I had a goat cheese and spinach omelette that was just perfect—fluffy and delicious. My wife had a salad, with a dressing she loved, and a glass of champagne. The young waitress had a delightful French accent, was quite efficient and was easy on the eyes, too.

Ate here only once, but the food was quite good and the atmosphere relaxing. Place feels authentic. That night it was not crowded and we, a table of four, where able to have decent conversation. Tried to go back again with a friend recently and unfortunately there was a large group there taking up half the little restaurant, and with the other diners we would have been way in the back. Decided as it was a balmy evening to go elsewhere where we could sit outside. I'd go back to this place again, as I really liked it the first time.

Perfect restaurant for celebratory lunch! My friends and I often return to Jean Claude for birthdays. Great omelettes, salads, sandwiches. Best frites in the city. The service is warm and embracing. They don’t hover but aim to please, and they will sing happy birthday put a candle in an apple or pear tart. Perfect.

Mothers Day dinner so it was busy, we had booked so no problem with that. Food was great although they took a couple of goes to get two of the meals correct (one of our party is dairy allergic) but Sandra, our server, coped with the situation very well. A couple of bottles of very nice wine later, we had a great time here. Added "entertainment" was an accident outside the restaurant that brought an ambulance, lights flashing...

this is a amazing little establishment where the food and service are outstanding. Outstanding dishes include from starters, the calamari, the beat salad, the scallops and the Mesclun. For a main course the following dishes were exquisite: the signature skate, the salmon, the bouillabaisse and the cod. for desert we all shared the bread pudding and the tart tat an. The service was aimed at providing you with a very attentive experience without being intrusive. The only draw backs from this being my new favorite are the absence spirits. (the only serve beer and wine) and with the open front french doors the road noise was over whelming. perhaps sit in the back if you have hearing issues. If your in the neighborhood. stop by, you'll not be disappointed.

Grateful Jean Claude offers both indoor and outdoor dining during COVID and French cuisine in UES Manhattan NY. Coquille St. Jacques appetizer pricey but wonderful. Very tasty French Onion Soup with too much bread. Honey roast duck breast entree a good choice but dinner portion was too small, like the onion soup. Creme brûlée a disappointment as it neither warm nor freshly served.

but not french restaurant priced. Perfect for brunch, intimate, friendly and with a kind staff. Good value and good food in a neighborhood filled with intriguing shops. Try it.

We dined early on a Friday night. When we arrived around 6pm the place was empty. By the time we left around 7:45pm it was packed. Obviously a local favorite. The duck was excellent but what was sublime was the fennel-enhanced slaw that it rested on. The salmon was good, but not cooked to the med-rare finish requested. Our guest always enjoys the bucket of mussels. Disappointments: the escargot - which was happily presented en coquille, was missing that hard garlicky/butter goodness. Six thin slices of French bread for three wasn't sufficient and we asked for more twice: especially with the mussels broth and escargot. And this, no fault of the restaurants - despite online reviews to the contrary, there is no full bar - strictly a varied wine/beer list - which is fine, just wished we knew going in.

This is a neighborhood gem and our local spot to pretend you are in Paris with your French lover. Great food. Wonderful wine list. Perfect service - there when you have a need and not rushing you to leave. If you go often enough - you will be greeted by name and have a favorite table. Try not to eat the entire bread basket with butter before your French Onion Soup comes.

This restaurant was such a lovely experience. I had the calves liver with onions and mashed potatoes which was superb. The wait staff are friendly and efficient. My friend had duck which was delicious. Small bistro atmosphere, reasonable pricing. Highly recommended.

We must have walked past this restaurant a million times and each time my hubby said "we need to try this place!" Today we were walking by on our way to another restaurant for lunch and saw Jean Claude had a lunch menu and figured let's give it a try!!! The restaurant is super cute and cozy. The manager/host/owner was very nice and showed us to a table in good proximity to the air conditioner (it was in the 90's outside). He very quickly provided us with our drinks and took our order. We had: - French Onion Soup - very good - Beet and Goat Cheese Salad - the hubby liked it, I thought it was a bit bland - Steak and Gruyere Sandwich - very good, perfect size for 2 The service was super friendly and fast, but not so fast where you feel rushed. I definitely want to come back for dinner.

We ate at this restaurant while visiting The Met. The Me is opened later hours on Friday and Saturday evenings, so we visited The Met, went to Jean Claude 2 for dinner, and returned to The Met. The atmosphere was cozy and comfortable, and the service was excellent. My steak was a perfect medium -rare, and the French Malbec which the waiter suggested was full-bodied and fruity. My companion's boiled skate was perfectly broiled with no over-cooking or toughness. The prices were very reasonable. We plan to return on our next trip to NYC. We just loved it.

Onion soup as bubbly and rich as we've had in Paris, Roasted chicken to perfection. Decent wine list and friendly staff. You can't go wrong!

We frequent this intimate and charming restaurant for the warm, friendly atmosphere, as well as the consistently good food. The menu is small, but there is something to appeal to everyone (even a vegetable plate!), and there are excellent nightly specials (especially the bouillabaisse and roast lamb). Salads are perfectly dressed, the fish is always cooked to the correct temperature, and everything is flavorful and delicious.

Nice little French restaurant. Nice food, great service, small and intimate. We had the steak au poivre and creme brulee and it was delicious. Not that expensive. Will definetly come back.

We booked dinner at JCII on a whim having checked out its menu. Our table was at 6 and when we arrived the place was almost full. Obviously it attracts a loyal crowd and appears to be "popular locally" as they say. The dining room is small, the food is French, and the service is welcoming and efficient. My skate was rather dry which suggested to me that it may have stood around for a bit waiting for a customer. However, my wife's fish was excellent. We'll go back and I think I'll try one of their "steak frites" type of dishes. There are several and they looked very tempting. Dessert was excellent.

We were in the neighborhood and trying to decide where to eat. There were several choices of ethnic cuisine, but we settled on French, and Jean Claude 2. The menu offered some interesting choices, the atmosphere was pleasant. The service was attentive to the point of being a bit intrusive. The bread was good, and they offered more. The salmon was cooked perfectly and was nicely presented. The skate was unusual, well prepared, but a bit awkwardly presented, with a large whole vegetable (a tomato, if memory serves) on top. If we lived in the neighborhood, we'd visit from time to time.

We got into the restaurante because we saw locals in many tables for dinner. Onion Soup was great, skate was very tasty but a bit dry. Chocolate mousse was incredibke. All in all the place is very nice, food was pretty good and servuce waa excellent. Once you are in, you dont want to go out!! Very rwcommendable!

check out this small bistro on the upper eastside for authentic french fare at a good value. You almost expect to pay in euros. Lovely service and a low-key vibe

Enjoyed my recent visit. Found the food to be good with friendly service. Can be somewhat noisy when crowded. Small restaurant with decent prices. Overall, a positive experience worth a return visit.

We had an early dinner here on a Tuesday night as part of a trip. It is a neighborhood treasure. We were visiting, but if I lived nearby, I would go on a regular basis. We ordered a nice st Emillion grand cru, 2014, for a reasonable price. We had the special entree, lamb loin over mashed potatoes with red wine reduction and yummy ratatouille veggies. It was wonderful. For dessert, the creme brûlée was good, as was the chocolate mousse. The bead pudding was ok, not special. Go, it’s worth it! 😎

It's the kind of place you walk by a dozen times without noticing, a narrow little bistro with a very discreet sign on the front window and tiles on the floor. Most of the customers appear to live in the neighborhood, greeting the maitre d' and each other like old and dear friends. And as soon as the wine is poured and the bread is served, you know why this is a neighborhood star. Classical French bistro menu, skate, coque au vin, steak frites, etc. made with first class ingredients by a very skillful hand and the occasional innovative touch that lifts the entire meal beyond the ordinary. In addition to really good food and excellent service, even when the place is packed, voices are soft and you can have a proper conversation with you dinner companions without shouting,.

I booked a table for 4 at Jean Claude 2 on a whim...because it was small and very inexpensive for NYC. The food was good and the service excellent!!

After spending the afternoon at the Metropolitan Museum of Art we were ready for a French Bistro dinner. After checking the online reviews we settled on Jean Claude 2 and were so glad we did. The french onion soup was superb, as was the scallops with beets. In fact, both were among the best of these items we had ever tasted. The soup base was light, the gruyere cheese perfectly baked, and the onions did not overpower. Highly recommended. As for the scallops, they very perfectly cooked, slightly juicy sitting on thin slices of beets with as wonderful light sauce. A don't miss. We were slightly disappointed with the chicken (but only because there was a small piece that was undercooked). The dish itself was excellent and when the waiter was informed of the issue, he gave us a free bread pudding dessert (which also was excellent). Portions are small (which is perfect for us), but it gives you the chance to taste many things. A couple sitting near us had the steak, which looked really good (and if you want a larger portion, this is probably the thing to order). All in all, we will return.

the mussles were quite nice in addition to the really good sauce I liked the chopped tomato and garlic that was in with it. I love the mesculine salad with goat cheese. and no the hanger steak was very good it wasn't spectacular

We used to come to their original location in Soho and were so happy to fine the new location. Same comfort food. Friendly service and atmosphere. Great value too.

Atmosphere is very much a Bistro, in look and feeling, the décor and ambience felt like Paris. The location for us was perfect since the hospitals and hotel are around the corner. The pricing, for New York, is moderate. The food was traditional French bistro, the bread French, the onion soup outstanding, escargot very good, “moules et Frites” (mussels and fries were great). Will definitely return

Had dinner here with my 10 year old daughter and we were treated like royalty (which we are not). It's a very small restaurant but we didn't feel cramped. Service was perfect, not overbearing, stuffy or pretentious, but every attention was given to us. The Rose was delicious and the pours were generous. My daughter had the bouillabaisse that she loved-it was stuffed full of her favorites like mussels, shrimp, salmon and cod. I had the duck medallions which were cooked perfectly. Our favorite restaurant of the trip!

We experience poor service and unremarkable food. One item was severely over cooked and while we were asked if we wanted to try something else we had no desire at that point. No apology or attempt to make it right. I would not recommend and will not return

We ordered the mussel entree as our appetizer, duck breast and pork loin. Food came out very slow. The mussels were underwhelming. 45 minutes later our entrees came out. The pork loin was overcooked and dried out. Really not edible. The wait staff did not appear to care. They did offer to exchange the entree for duck but duck was not an option for my wife and waiting another half hour or more for another entree was not an option. There were no apologies offered, no nothing for a ruined meal. Needless to say, we will not be back.

Taking a late lunch break from a Sotheby's Auction, we did a quick check for restaurants within a few blocks, that had excellent reviews. Quoting a previous review, after dining here,Jean Claude's is a small, local neighborhood "gem of a restaurant". Despite arriving at about 3:45 PM, shortly before they were to close for lunch, the staff & owner were very accommodating to meet our every request and told us not to rush and to take as long as we needed to enjoy our lunch. And we did. The owner noted that they have two different Chefs. One for lunch and another for the dinner service. He noted both have their individual styles, and both are really good. He told us to come back someday for dinner to see the different creative style of the dinner chef. We plan to do it. For lunch, I ordered the classic French Onion Soup which was about as good as it gets. My lunch entrée was a Hanger Steak (with a nice French Red) and it was delicious as well. The overall ambiance resembles a small French/NY Bistro-it was simply comfortable and we enjoyed the setting. The wine menu is somewhat limited (thus one of the small reasons I didn't give it an 5 rating), however we enjoyed a nice French Red with our lunch. As fair as price, it was more than fair deal for NY-I will certainly make this a regular stop for trips in the future in the Big Apple. It is indeed a nice gem of a find. I would recommend it for friends or business folks that like a casual setting with a nice "laid back" feel that serves very good food at a great price.

Pretty dining room (although small). Great wines. Excellent, quick service. Professional staff. Great bistro food. Reasonable prices. A nice change from the typical UES restaurant.

Highly, highly recommend this lovely local French bistro for dinner. The service, food and setting are all brilliant and very authentically French. If you are a cheese fan, definitely have the cheese board to start. The steak with pepper sauce is excellent, as is the creme brûlée.

We have been dining at Jean Claude 2 since it's opening and each time we go we thoroughly enjoy our dinner. The food is consistently excellent at a reasonable price. Our favorites are the salmon, hanger steak, escargot and chocolate mouse, although I must say that everything we have had has been delicious. The service is excellent and the owner is quite charming and attentive. The place is small but very comfortable. This is real neighborhood find!

Just had a fantastic lunch with a group of friends. Jean Claude 2 was absolutely perfect on every front: charming, warm atmosphere, friendly attentive staff, and the food was delicious. Tradiional French dishes, with just a little up to date twist on everything. Mussles, salmon, desserts just super. Can't wait to go back.

We loved everything about this restaurant. The meal was extraordinary and the service was friendly, accommodating and professional. The atmosphere is relaxing and not too formal. Quite affordable as well! Will definitely be back.

High quality food and really not expensive for what you get.servers friendly and not overbearing.highly recommend this place

Spent a pleasant evening with some friends enjoying reasonably priced food. Service was efficient and friendly. Atmosphere low key.

We go there for dinner sometimes. The food is absolutely delicious!!! The service is top notch. Wine selection is very nice. It's a little pricey but well worth the splurge and considering that it's on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, the prices are actually decent. My only complaint would be that the tables are rather small and tightly packed, but given that this is a French themed place, I just pretend I am in a Parisian Cafe ;-)

Delightful, leisurely meal -- mostly traditional French, wide variety -- the skate was particularly delicious. Good, inexpensive wine selection by glass and bottle.

A reasonable mid priced French inspired cafe for New York. Our Onion soups were piping hot with a proper cheese covering, but with an extra sweetness in the broth, beyond what the onion would deliver in our opinion, The Spanish wine was OK, but more for variety. My steak sandwich was disappointing as it was just shaved beef which could not be made rare or anything like a French cafe steak. The Fries were good and crisp.

Their onion soup is just like the onion soup that my wife and I experienced 50 years ago in Paris at Les Halles market at 2 AM! Their food is sensitive, not overly seasoned and excellent/

I had a very pleasant lunch at this little 'boite' in my residential neighborhood. The food was excellent, the atmosphere relaxed, the service casually attentive and reasonably priced.

We live nearby and had passed by Jean Claude many times but had never tried it. A few weeks ago we had theater tickets on a Saturday night and decided to stop by for an early dinner before heading down to the play. It was a good decision. My husband and I shared the foie gras, then I had the duck and my husband had the pork. We also had a bottle of wine from the fairly priced wine list. Everything was very good including the bread and the service which was attentive but not rushed and got us out quickly when we mentioned that we had tickets. We didn't have dessert because we were in a hurry but next time we will. Portions were a bit on the small side but appropriate for a three course meal.

We had dinner and while they had French sounding dishes it is likely some such as the snails were simply poor quality. The meat was average and the fries were actually decent. Staff was horrible it is first to have a waiter throw tea bags on our table. There is nothing authentic about this restaurant avoid it

Small bistro serving very traditional French food. Service was right on point. Food was very fresh and cooked to perfection. One friend had the lamb which he said melted in his mouth. I had the steak which was cooked perfectly. Wine list is appropriate; nothing too expensive. Bread pudding fabulous. I'll be back for sure.

Visited it on our trip to New York. Excellent food and exceptional service. We ordered the Salmon and Organic chicken which were very tasty and enjoyed the Crème brûlée.

great bistro.i have been coming here since they opened.tried almost eerything and hae never been disapointed.i loe this restaurant

My husband, daughter, and I enjoyed a fine fish meal at Jean Claude II yesterday. First, I ordered the gazpacho, which was perfectly chilled and delicious. The main courses were all fish - salmon for me, cod for my husband, and skate for my daughter. Each had its own wonderful preparation and we were all delighted with our meal. A carafe of rose from Provence was an excellent drink choice. For dessert, we shared a fine chocolate mousse. My daughter said it was the best one she ever had! The service was attentive and friendly. We plan on returning to Jean Claude II the next chance we get!

We recently had dinner at this attractive eastside french bistro. The hosts are very friendly and helpful and the food is very good. The tables are nicely spaced and the noise level was reasonable for a dinner on a Saturday night. I had delicious onion soup to start followed by tasty steak frites. My companion had beet salad to start followed by pan seared Salmon over mushrooms and spinach which she throughly enjoyed except for a little too much garlic. Overall this was an enjoyable experience and we will return soon.

Unfussy bistro with nice atmosphere, friendly staff which served reasonably authentic French food and reassuringly European portions. We had the poulet roti which was good. Washed down with a Sauvignon which was excellent.

This was my first visit to Jean Claude 2, recommended by one of our company of three who has been there often. The restaurant is charming, really beautiful in the sense that you could imagine that you're dining in a French bistro. The food was great. I had the gazpacho which, while strangely beet colored, was delicious. The bread brought to the table gratis is excellent. My friends both had the beet salad which they clearly thoroughly enjoyed. I had the very best Salade Niçoise I believe I've ever had, the tuna seared to perfection, the anchovies thick and flavorful -- perfection. We hared a half carafe of the Chardonnay of our choice.

Friendly staff, delicious and good quality food, good service , nice wine selection . Best in the neighborhood. 🥂🥗🍤

I had high hopes for this restaurant. The service was outstanding, and the appetizers were excellent which is why I gave this place 3 stars instead of 2. First, the positive: The scallops were excellent - very tender and flavorful. The steamed escargot was also excellent. Great portion. Now, the negative: The salmon was over cooked and the skin was burnt and bitter. The steak frites, which was ordered medium rare, was actually well done and was grisly. Lastly we ordered the creme brûlée to share and the center was cold. We would go back for the escargot and great service, but just that.

Had a mixed experience at Jean Claude 2. Charming French restaurant with expedient attentive service. Appetizers were excellent. Enjoyed the escargot. However, disappointed by the main course. Had the duck, which was overdone and tasteless, and mismatched with bland vegetables.

Quick fix or leisurely French, with exceptionally good fish. Small, but not rote French menu. Plates well thought out with a meat/fish, vegetables, starch and sauce. Pleasant, but not overbearing staff. Great neighborhood dining.

Average food nothing spectacular, attentive staff, portions were adequate nice atmosphere. I would not agree with some of the reviews I have seen posted about this restaurant

A sliver of a restaurant with exposed brick and brasserie feel. Good food, good service, great onion soup. Snug quarters....but not as snug as it would be in Paris.

I wanted to like this dining experience. Our waiter was friendly in a nice way and we sat outside in front of the restaurant. The desserts, bread pudding and creme brûlée were excellent. The rest of the meal was just okay, not actively bad, but not as good as we anticipated. The beet salad and the skate that my spouse ordered were acceptable, but nothing special. My salade verte had two nice goat cheese crostini, but was overly garlicky and piquant. The salmon was cooked to my specifications, but I found the spinach and oyster mushrooms greatly overcooked which detracted from the overall dish. Overall a bit of a disappointment.

We were crushed when our local favorite moved to a new location, but it's worth the extra ten block walk. The food is consistently excellent (best frites in NY!!) and the staff is wonderful and welcoming. Hopefully, the longer walk will help work off some of the delicious chocolate mousse!

Outstanding small French restaurant on the east side. Had all my faves, done to perfection. Kir royals? Pas de probleme. Roast chicken done to perfection on a bed of "risotto" that was somehow not as heavy as glue the way it sometimes is. We skipped dessert this time, but I would be glad to return.

If you know Paris, this will give you flashbacks. It is small and a little noisy when full but it is full for all the right reasons. The menu has all the classics done in a no-nonsense way with consistently excellent execution and attractive presentation. The steak au poivre is perfectly Parisien and done exactly to order. the duck was a delight. The sauces meet all the expectations of an accomplished French kitchen. Sharing appetizers was easy and taken care of smoothly. Service was adequate in a small place and friendly to boot. This is much better than costlier restaurants in midtown or some of the trendier areas of New York.

Typical French restaurant… Typical French menu offerings. The food is consistently good and the service is always friendly and is quick to fill your water glass and to take your orders. Variety is good at lunch you can get a burger or steak or salmon. I have had all and they were always yummy. The desserts are also very good. My friends and I go here often For lunch… Never been for dinner.

This new restaurant serves excellent French bistro cuisine. My group had the breast of duck, hanger steak and roasted chicken. Appetizers were foie gras and beef carpaccio on arugula salad. Dessert was creme brulee and tarte tatin with a dollop of cream. All tasty and delicious. The duck was especially good and tender. The service was prompt and friendly. A good selection of wine and spirits. We'll be back!

Excellent small menu with really quality ingredients and a nicely selected wine list. Good service. Get there early or late, not 7-8. Very typical French bistro. We will return.

Had dinner at this charming French restaurant. The food was remarkably authentic and delicious. The host/owner is professional and charming. This will be one of my local go-to restaurants.

Very welcoming atmosphere. Small intimate space, clientele to match. Classic French menu. Food matched the vibe - onion soup with thick chewy cheese; hanger steak (=skirt to Brits), tender and succulent. Warm ambience (which seems to be a prevalent NY feature). We were charmed and warmly recommend. One BIG plus: a corked bottle of wine was extremely well handled by the management. This is often a difficult experience, and getting agreement and understanding is a sure test of good quality service. They tasted, agreed, and replaced.

Found this little gem by chance, walking in the area. The atmosphere is quaint and the service was superb. The clientele looked like they had been many times over. The coffee was amazing. The best part for me was the croque-monsieur---Heaven! Went back and had it the next day. The accompanying salad had great flavor--which usually never happens! LOVE and will be back again soon!

We have walked by this place for two years! What a mistake. We decided to try it last night and were not disappointed. We had the French onion soup- excellent maybe one of the best I’ve had, we had the scallops so good-! For dinner we had the slake fish with roasted tomatoe and basalmic reduction and I had the skirt steaks both were excellent. It was so good we talked about our meal for an hour afterwards. I hate to wr

Came here with executive colleagues for a networking dinner. The restaurant is small but comfortable. It was selected as its quiet enough to talk, which we did. For appetizer I enjoyed a green salad with goat cheese. My entree was salmon cooked over a spinach and mushroom ragu - delicious. The wine list was excellent. I sampled a Malbec. It was a nice dinner. Price ( no coffee or dessert) = $60.

If you want a small, quiet bistro with excellent French food and attentive service, Jean Claude II is a suitable choice. There were three of us dining, and each enjoyed their entrees (chicken, duck and skate). Weeknight service was pleasant and unrushed.

If you were to make an assumption about this restaurant's food based on the restaurant's appearance, you would probably think it was very good. You would be wrong, in my opinion. I think that if it is ever listed in a published Zagat guide it would get an 18 or 19 rating out of a possible 30 for its food. I found that both the onion soup and the duck breast were average.

My husband didn't want me to write this review because he wants to keep this gem to himself. Three of us dined here last night and had a variety of dishes, onion soup. Tuna tartare and beet, goats cheese and endive salad....all,wonderful but the onion soup truly outstanding. Our mains were scallops, duck breast and steak au poire, we would all order them again - enough said. Somehow we managed to share a chocolate mousse, dark, rich and perfect. The wine list is varied and reasonably priced, the restaurant small and intimate and the service very good, relaxed and friendly. We will be back.

This a traditional French bistro with all the faves. I had steak frites, my wife had roasted chicken. Really good. The service was great, just a nice transport to France for a dinner!

Nestled between Afghan and Asian fare, Jean Claude II is an intimate Parisian-style bistro with well-prepared food and quiet, friendly staff. My roast chicken on a bed of herb vegetable risotto was excellent, and my wife and I shared a green salad with a subtle vinaigrette that we both loved.

Group of 5 thoroughly enjoyed every bite of food we had as we went to celebrate a friend's birthday. We left the choice up to her as she is very much a Francophile and she chose this nice bistro style restaurant. Wine reasonably priced for NYC restaurant..we had the rose. One got the duck dish, two had steak & frites, I had the chicken with delicious vegetable risotto and birthday gal had pork medallions...they accommodated her request to switch out the fingerling potatoes for the potatoes gratin. Dessert was also tasty...bread pudding, chocolate mousse & tarte tartin! Definitely another city place to add to our list.

Good. Could be 5 star if waiters were nicer. Omelette for brunch very good but French toast embarrassingly small portion.
Very Nice Dinner!
While I was in the neighborhood tonight I happened onto this wonderful little restaurant and had a great steak dinner. Ambiance was very nice, very good service and tasty house wine! I'll bring my wife back here soon!
