Really good pizza

By James Simon |

Very good thin and crispy brick oven pizza. Would definitely go back and couldn't find anything wrong with it, just not as good as L'industrie

New York Pizza!

By Charliesangelsparis |

The address is an institution but it is good!!!! the starters are at the top (Mozarella sticks, squid, garlic bread) everything is delicious and very well served in quantity. Pizza is a monument in itself!!!! everything is perfect and deserves the 20 min wait (no resa). Very friendly service and advising you well because the pizzas are very large and 1 pizza 14' for 2 is very sufficient. here is a place where we leave 20% tips with pleasure because they deserve it:)

New York wood-fired pizza

By raquelrS8607ZI |

Excellent wood-fired pizza, fantastic atmosphere. Average price in New York. We really liked it and it's worth the queues.

Charming and tasty.

By Vicki Jayne |

Had a great time visiting the iconic John's Pizza. The inside was so different to yout usual pizzeria... graffiti, carved names in tables and walls and it's just had such a traditional NYC charm. The staff were really helpful and friendly. I got the half cheese half pepperoni and I didn't expect it to be so big! I was solo so left the majority as 3 slices were more than enough for me, but they put the rest in a box which I could enjoy later. It tasted lovely cold too! Would absolutely go back if I ever visit NYC again. Loved it.

Amazing Pizza - just try it.

By Lumpsy |

What a cool place, with loads of history and life. The pizza was sublime and definitely worth a detour and a short queue to get a table. Do not hesitate to go.

Loved It!

By ACASM |

My kids said that they preferred Joe's, but I liked John's pizza better. Be prepared to queue and inside the tables and booths are "cozy" with not much room to spread out. Food is amazing and service too. As people have described, it is down to earth so don't go expecting the marble and clean lines of a Pizza Express, but embrace the downtown vibe of Manhattan in Greenwich Village and go local. Oh, and they serve Stella too in both pints and pitchers.

Pop culture icon in NY

By funkettaro |

I'm back to John's after a few years. What to say, Covid did not change it, still a very good experience. I think it's a pop culture icon in NY, worth a visit for sure. We had a "fifty" pie... best non-traditional pizza I've had in my life.

As always, excellent coal oven pizza

By Sussex Traveller |

This was my third or fourth visit to this 'must go' NYC pizza spot. There was a bit of line outside but it's proactively manned with staff making sure groups are sat as soon as there is space for a party of their size. We probably only wanted five minutes at most. Great atmosphere inside and love the decor. Menu has choices for everyones taste and the portions are big and the quality is high. This place doesn't do slices so you have to order the whole pizza, which works for me! You can see everything being freshly made and when your pizza arrives at the table you can see the unique qualities an ancient coal fired oven imparts. Hopefully the City won't have put an end to this method of cooking by the time I can return. Get here soon as you can and eat the best New York pizza!

Yum!

By Wendy M |

Delicious pizza and great service. Great intro to New York pizza! Had the Gambino and zucchini strips! Crust was delicious.

Spectacular

By Peter D |

At this point does this place really need reviews they are legendary. First time here after hearing about them years ago, 50 minutes cue in the cold to get a table and would have been worth double that, outstanding pizza , great service and very reasonably priced. Regardless of the cue if you go to NY do not leave without going here if you like pizza.

Good, but overhyped

By Joy |

Cool little spot. Went there based off the Portnoy review. It was okay. Not 9.4 worthy in my opinion. Definitely worth trying. Service needs improvement though. Server never came to check on us or refill drinks. The pizza was good, just not great.

Great Weekday Spot!!

By Chris P |

A pleasant experience overall. At first, the long line outside seemed daunting, but we were seated within 20 minutes! The staff was soon thereafter with us to take our order. The pizza was out no more than 20 minutes later. Watching the staff cook the pizzas was like watching broadway performers execute their choreography with zero flaws. Onto the pizza!! Being a Chicagoan, I am very picky with pizza. I am very well pleased with this pizza and all of its components. The highlight by far is the sauce. The sauce was not too sweet or tangy - it had the perfect blend of tomato and spices. The crust was perfectly complementary to the pie and blended into the pie seamlessly, just as a good bass player can barely be noticed within a band. I left a 4/5 as I really enjoyed my experience here, but I am sure that there is better pizza within the city. I don’t know where, but I am sure it exists. The pizza was good. Really really good, but not a 5/5 from me today. Maybe next time - if I get more toppings.

Great pizza, appalling service

By CathPoRo |

We enjoyed our pizza, I can’t deny it. But two out of the three staff who served us were just plain rude. After sitting down at our rather cramped booth one of the waiters indicated gruffly at the sign on the table and left, leaving us to work out that he must have told us the menu was on a QR code. However, as there was no WiFi and we had foreign phones with extortionate data prices, we couldn’t access it. So I asked one of the other staff if we could have a paper menu, as I explained the problem. He literally tutted. He brought back a scrappy laminated menu saying only “there’s only one” as he tossed it down in front of us. I was all for walking out, which is very unlike me, but we were tired and hungry. So we stayed, and the pizza was good. But I wouldn’t go back.

Worth. It.

By Travel with Kels |

Thanks to my husband we ventured down to John's on our recent visit to NYC. This pizza was amazing. So worth the stop. You know it's good when you roll up and there's a line. The staff was really nice and accommodatable. I didn't expect to love it as much as I did. Will go again!

What Can I Say? Amazing!

By Kuvasz1988 |

In HS I worked in a NY pizzeria. We made awesome pies ! John’s is unreal. Place is tight. Line was outside but moved fast. Wait was no longer than 10 minutes. Service good. Pizza was unreal. A must. Please go!

Quite Possibly the best pizza on earth

By Jason C |

With a very short trip to NYC, I wanted to make the most of my experience and have the best pizza NYC had to offer. TripAdvisor told me this was the spot, and I took a little trip during my lunch break to run over and a grab a 1/2 cheese and pepperoni. Quite possibly the best pizza I have ever had., although comparing to my hometown South Shore Bar pizza is comparing apples and oranges. A gentle mix of the cheese with the sauce give the appearance of “sauce on top”, and a perfectly crispy crust. A little spicy heat to the sauce that was an unexpected, but welcome surprise! Great service and a nice outdoor area that I plan on spending more time (and a few cold beers at) in a future trip. 10/10 for John’s on Bleeker. Worth the trip of your are within 1 to 3000 mile radius.

Always the best!

Best pizza In Manhattan: I love the old restaurant with all the pictures of celebrities on the walls. Great energy and happy vibes as families and friends gather to enjoy this absolute treat.

Best pizza I had in New York and value for money too!

By Ashley Liew |

This was the best pizza I enjoyed while in New York for the New York City Marathon 2022! My Singaporean friends and I were looking forward to this post-marathon celebration dinner at John's of Bleecker Street and we all enjoyed ourselves. It was really value for money. The thin crust pizza was tasty and full of fresh ingredients. The sides were delicious too. The beer was smooth. The service was efficient and fantastic too, despite them being busy on the marathon weekend. Thank you so much!

What an amazing pizza and location!!

By mart_ball1972 |

We went to Naples earlier in the year - hand on heart this was as good as pizzas we had in Naples - I already want to go back again before we go home!!

Overhyped and underwhelming

By Belle-Noel |

My brother told me that I had to try this place, as it was being marketed as the best pizza in New York City. When I therefore found myself in NY, my friend and I came here to see what all the fuss was about. The pizza is made with a coal fired brick oven and this supposedly sets it apart from other pizzas...allegedly… We arrived in the rain and asked if we could sit outside and eat a takeaway pizza but were told no by the not so friendly man standing outside the restaurant. So we decided to just get a pizza to takeaway and find somewhere to eat it. The pizza was just over $20 and when we eventually found somewhere to try it were not really that impressed - the hype was far too generous. The crust and base was very thin and charred but that didn’t elevate the flavour of it in any way. The sauce and cheese were good but it didn’t blow me away after one bite….its not somewhere that I would recommend personally and have had better tasting naan back in London - which the charring on the crust reminded me of. My friend who is American and lives in New Jersey agreed with me and we both said that we’d had better NJ and NY pizza - in fact having just eaten some slices around the corner at Bleeker Street Pizza and finding them delicious. We ended up there accidentally - when aiming for this place but I am so glad that mistake was made. Their pizza was excellent whereas this one was really nothing special.

A 1929 pizzeria with all the trimmings

By Taylor B |

Did you ever notice that the older the restaurant, the better it is. Of course, it only makes sense. If the food isn't good or the service is slow, you won't be in business very long. John's of Bleecker Street in New York City has been making brick-oven pizzas with signature crisp thin crusts since 1929. Locate at 278 Bleecker Street, in the Greenwich Village neighborhood, and founded by Giovanni "John" Sasso, an Italian immigrant, John's features original wooden booths, black-and-white Art Deco floors worn by time, turn-of-the-century tin ceilings and faded murals. Open from 11:30 to 10 Sunday through Thursday and 11:30 to 11 on Friday and Saturday, John's specialty is his original 16-inch pizza with mozzarella and tomato sauce with pork sausage. My wife and I started with garlic bread, local Semolina bread toasted with the house's garlic sauce and served with the house's marinara sauce with mozzarella cheese. I was delighted with John's meatball sandwich with melted mozzarella cheese. My wife was equally pleased with a chicken parmigiana sandwich with breaded veal cutlets covered in the house's marinara sauce and melted mozzarella cheese. No wonder John's has been satisfying customers for nearly 100 years.

Not good

By DotCW |

Not a good experience for us, despite reading such good reviews. One of the waiters seemed very disinterested, the other was pleasant but forgot to put our order through. Pizza eventually came, but not blown away. I felt relieved to leave!! I would not recommended, maybe we just went on a bad day.

WHEN IN NY!!

By janeclare05 |

My husband is a pizza lover always looking for the best places. Our sons were in NYC a year ago and raved about this place. So while we were here we decided to try it. We arrived to a line to get in that went around the block. We were surprised that it really didn't take too long to get our table. Loved the energy of the place and the service was great. The pizza was amazing. We were not disappointed. And my husband, the pizza lover thought it was definitely one of the best pizzas he has had.

NYC's Best Pie

By Jeff A |

Some people call John's of Bleecker Street the best pizza in NYC, I agree - at least this simple pepperoni pizza was awesome crispy goodness. #JohnsOfBleeckerSt had no wait and service was quick and efficient. Our server was an awesome young man that I wish I could recall his name as he deserved a shoutout for his engaging manner.

I was under the impression that nothing on earth could compare to Chicago tavern style pizza. Boy was I wrong. Yes NY cut their slices so huge that you have to fold them but who honestly cares when it’s this damn good. I was perturbed to find out they didn’t sell individual slices but I’m so glad I didn’t listen to my first mind. I ordered the boom pizza & that’s exactly what it tasted like, BOOM. The perfectly baked almost cracker like crust was the perfect companion to the excellent tomato sauce & basil. I sat on the patio with a nice breeze from a tan in awe of this place riddled with celebrity photos in the windows. Place also isn’t cheat at the higher end of $30 for a pie but again when it tasted this good who honestly cares.

Best pizza ever

By James B |

Had the most amazing pizzas for a family of 3, we ordered a whole boom pie which had Mozzarella, Tomato sauce, Roasted Tomatoes, Ricotta, Garlic, Fresh Basil and then had half & half pepperoni and basil and a johns classic. We didn’t have to wait at all and the service was excellent and very friendly and helpful.

Fabulous Pizza!

By Jeremy C |

Some of the best NY pizza we have had in a long time - charred crust, flavorable sauce, and just the right amount of cheese. Prices are reasonable, staff is friendly, and the salads are also quite good.

Excellent

By Fabredrum |

Restaurant with a very old look but famous. Two sizes of pizza to choose from, the medium was enough for us both with a garlic bread to start. Glass of fresh water served to start.

Fantastic pizzas!

By Dacavesta |

We visited John’s after reading some reviews. Thankfully there was some space to sit inside when we arrived at around 2pm. The five of us were seated and we opted for two 14” pizzas between us all. The pizzas didn’t take long to arrive and they were delicious. Although we had enough to eat we probably should have opted for the bigger sizes just because they were that good! We’d definitely go again if we’re in the area!

Authentic New York pizza.

By RodSaint71 |

I think it is a must to visit this place to taste the authentic pizza of New York its name is John’s of Bleeker Street Pizzeria and it is located in Greenwich Village. This traditional pizza shop with more than 90 years of life offers us a small but warm place with very good attention, but what stands out is in the pizza, which in addition to having a large size, is cooked in a charcoal brick oven that gives it a differential in its flavor. Due to the size of the place there is usually a line to enter, the decoration highlights photos of several celebrities who have visited the place and is highly recommended to go with family or friends. It is worth the wait and although the price is a little high it does not disappoint, surely we will return.

The best Pizza in New York - with the worst restaurant

By Mark M |

Dave Portnoy made us visit this place about 2 years ago. Every time we have been since then, including Christmas 2021, the pizza is amazing. The Covid measures are non existent however. You are Shoulder to Shoulder from the queue to your table and nobody was wearing a mask. There was no hand sanitiser and the chef/cook was also not wearing any face covering. There is always a queue- but you expect that - it’s got a big reputation. The pizza itself is always delicious and literally the one of the best pizza’s in NYC. The actual restaurant is shocking. Dirty, dated and covered in graffiti dug into the wooden fixtures. It has a college hangout feel which goes against the hype around the place. The staff are very arrogant - borderline rude, which I guess comes from the fact they trade off past years of excellent food. There is an air that you are lucky to be there - which I guess with pizza this good - you are. But the welcome at Joe’s is much better and the pizza is pretty much as good there. You don’t feel welcome at any point, the door is always open with dirty dishes being trolled out and servers tending outside tables. In the dead of winter - if you are sat by the door, it is not nice! I would recommend ordering a take away and avoiding the actual restaurant - you will be getting the good part of the John’s experience without having to put up with the bad parts.

Pizza that is excellent - John’s of Bleecker Street

By Jai Padmanabhan |

This is a NY iconic pizza place. You order the whole pizza as they don’t serve slices. Ordered the traditional regular 14” cheese and tomato sauce pizza. It was excellent. I usually eat 1 - 2 slices but I ended up eating almost the whole pizza. The lines are long but the wait is worth. It is certainly not a “been there, done that” place but somewhere you would go every time you get the urge to have pizza. Would strongly recommend and certainly will go back whenever I can.

Best pizza I’ve ever had

By Joe |

Best pizza I’ve ever had. I got the recommendation through YouTube/ tik tok & Dave Portnoy. Had some apprehensions thinking maybe it’s a tourist trap. I was proven wrong, single handedly the best pizza I’ve ever had, and all for a reasonable price. Mozzarella dippers were insane, plain cheese pizza 10/10. The decor with all the famous people who have dined there added to it. Can’t wait for my next trip over NYC to come down here again in the near future.

It’s just a must

By montrealboywonder |

Every visit to NYC warrants and mandates a trip to John’s ! It’s a must. The pizza is fresh. Cooked to perfection and crunchy as heck. The service is fast. The dough is awesome and the beer is cold ! It’s our 5th time and we can’t wait until our next ! Go go go !

Low Quality Food and Overpriced

By Russ R |

Ordered a meatball sub sandwich. Waited outside in hot weather for 30 minutes for one sandwich. When asked to check my order it seemed that my order was waiting for some time in the kitchen. No one gave damn interest to check if it’s made or not. Sandwich is mediocre. Nothing special. Which doesn’t even taste like mozzarella. Total price for the sandwich was $16. The menu price shows $12. It seems that they charge extra $4 just for cheese only. The quality of the sandwich was the same as from a deli for $8-9. This place is overpriced and food quality is mediocre. Besides all of that, I had a terrible heartburn after I had a meatball sandwich from this place. Terrible!

Best pizza ever!

By Ted T |

Went to 2 highly rated pizza places and this was hands down the best! My wife, obsessed with cheese, commented that she didn’t taste a lot of cheese but it didn’t matter because it was incredible!

Authentic NYC Pizza experience, where the Pizza is amazing.

By Robert J |

We wanted to visit an old, authentic Pizza place on our last night in NYC. John's was everything we hoped it would be - full of history, great service and 10/10 Pizza. Loved the walls and booths with customer names etched onto them, and the busy atmosphere. Service is super quick once you're inside, but you may need to queue for a few mins outside. You can't book a table, but I promise it's worth the wait. Definitely among the best 2 or 3 Pizzas I've ever had. We'll be back when we next visit NYC.

Great pizza, funky service

By GR260 |

This place oozes personality with their church-style seating and tables etched with decades worth of visitors. The pizza is positively fabulous. Great cheese... perfect sauce... delicious, crispy crust... all in the perfect proportions. The only mark down is for the odd guy who waited on us. Maybe he thinks being arrogant is a cute flashback to the days of the Stage Door Deli. But he wasn't cute... just miserable. Definitely go try it... maybe you'll get lucky and have another waiter!

I'd say my 4 star rating is right about on the money.

By Joe H |

We wanted to try DiFara's in Brooklyn, but ran out of time. (see separate review) I'd also heard about John's of Bleeker, and it was pretty much on our way, so we decided to stop by and see what it's all about. I'd say the experience was a good one. I got dropped off at 11:30 AM just in time for opening. There were only 4 people ahead of me in line, but at least 20 people inside already being served. Not sure if they actually open at 11 or what, but oh well. The wait was not that long, and the two guys working 'the street' were friendly enough. My buddy got moved twice from his holding pattern while I waited, but that's to be expected. The pizza came out hot and fresh about 15-20 minutes later, and I wasn't gonna wait til he circled the block again, so I dove in. I'd say my 4 star rating is right about on the money. I ordered the plain cheese, which presented as a thin, fresh pie with a dollop of sauce dabbed sporadically onto the top of the cheese. Not very weighty for sure, but I loved the char on the crust. To be honest, we have a few places in NEPA that compare favorably with John's, but when in New York, you should probably make the stop and try them on for size.

Best pizza in NYC

By karenCFC |

Just made the annual pilgrimage from UK to Johns and it did not disappoint. Unfortunately we only made it once due to the lines due to popularity. Absolutely fantastic pizza as always. Love this place.

Have your NYC Pizza experience here!

By Nobel |

This is one of the pizza spots I'll bring people to sit down and have a delicious NYC pie! John's has been around for a long time, and yes I have been going here for a long time! You come here, stand in line, and when it's your turn to enter, you go into a great spot with a nice ambiance of NYC culture. My go-to's here are their Sasso and Margherita. The texture of this pie here is what I enjoy, which is very crisp. The sauce tastes great on these pies. You can also not go wrong with their Original pie, which could be one to try if you're looking at trying their simple pie without all the other toppings to see how the it tastes. Even the plain pie is worth getting! If you want to try other dishes, I have had their Meatballs which I recommend! You cannot go wrong also getting their Fried Calamari or Garlic Bread. Service is typically on point here when I go, with friendly service and good people to help you out!

Fantastic New York pizza, a must try!

By Daryl V |

Easily some of the best New York pizza we have ever had. Extremely friendly staff and the atmosphere was old school and warm

Disappointing

By Annagien S |

Well, what can I say. Apparently it's a popular restaurant because people were queuing. So do we for half an hour. Expectations were high. Well, it's small, the couches are crappy, very noisy, not too clean and the pizza tasted ...well, I don't want to say anything, but a pizza from dominoes is more flavorful. So very disappointing. I don't really understand the reviews. Maybe it's just us but we didn't think it was worth it.

Perfect pizza

By KaladinT |

The best pizza we had in NYC, which includes another beginning with J. The pizza was incredible and service was good. The queue was also much more manageable than the other place.

Don’t let the line outside intimidate you. It moves fast!!!!!

By was4wendy |

When we arrived there was a long line going down the sidewalk. We were told that it moves fast!! We waited and it was about a 30 min wait. Inside had its own vibe, famous people’s pictures etc all over the walls and lots of nostalgia!! Pizza can quick. It was good, crispy and tasty. I think they only serve beer and wine. In and out pretty quick but they don’t rush you what so ever. Glad we had the experience!!

Nice local

By vittorio g |

Very nice and quaint place in Greenwich Village. Pizza is maybe not like in Naples, but absolutely good for being in New York...

Great food, overpriced

By Jack |

John’s of Bleecker Street did have some great pizza and garlic bread. I do think that it is overrated though. I had to wait for nearly an hour just to enter a very crowded restaurant. You can only order pies, not slices, which is hard with a group of three, and the food is very overpriced. Overall, I’m glad I went, but the numerous pizza places on that block are probably just as good. I wouldn’t come here again.

Big hopes; decent taste

By Dr Doomsville |

My recent visit to John's of Bleecker Street in New York City left much to be desired, reflecting sentiments echoed in several reviews. The pizza, touted as a New York City staple, fell short of expectations. While the crust had a worthy texture, it was overly greasy and lacking in flavor. Ambiance-wise, the historic setting is charming, while it is a bit noisy due to its popularity. Service was attentive and friendly staff ensured a smooth dining experience.

Best za!

By Wyatt |

Best pizza I've ever eaten. We got some while on a trip to NYC. We had to wait a little over a half an hour but boy was it worth it!

Unprofessional. Unsanitary. Disrespectful.

By Philip T |

If you care at all about hygiene, professionalism, or basic human respect, stay far away from this place. First off — the pizza itself is wildly underwhelming. It's nothing special. It tastes like a slightly higher-quality dollar slice at best — nowhere near worth the trouble, even before you factor in how they treat customers. I ordered two pizzas — the first arrived with a long hair baked into it. Against my better judgment, I decided to give them a second chance and ordered again. The second pizza also had a long strand of hair baked in. Instead of taking responsibility for an obvious food safety issue, the manager chose to insult my intelligence by insinuating I put the hair there myself. Rather than showing any professionalism, he doubled down — talking down to me, belittling me, and making it clear that customer care is not something this establishment values. Their response to serious concerns is to blame the customer, not fix the problem. Avoid the short Hispanic host at the front. He was extraordinarily rude, with dismissive behavior, showed zero accountability and even less courtesy. If this is how they treat customers when a real problem comes up, imagine how careless they are with everything you don't see behind the counter. This isn't just a bad restaurant. It’s a reflection of a business that lacks standards, lacks respect, and lacks any sense of decency. Save yourself the disrespect, and the health risks, and spend your money elsewhere. The Health department should visit sometime soon.

Fantastic pizza, highly recommended.

By thirty8 |

Went and had pizza at John's Pizzeria yesterday. We ordered The Sasso Pizza with Garlic bread topped with Mozzarella Cheese. Absolutely delicious. Highly recommended. Also met the staff member who served us back in 2012. He is now a manager of the restaurant. He came and said hello.

Perhaps the most delicious pizza we’ve ever tasted, and we’ve been to Italy!

By FemearsTravels |

The queue for John’s initially put us off, as were tired after a long flight and hungry. However, we came back after some time and decided to join the queue. Best decision! Pizza base was so tasty and the sauce was paired back and authentic. Large pizza was massive! Pitcher of John’s Special beer complimented the pizza perfectly. Highly recommend this pizzeria.

New York's Best Pizza

By Cy G |

I went here on a day where there was no line, dined in with family and ordered a large slice of meat and vegan pizza. Thin crust and and an abundance of toppings. Didn't feel at all bloated but satisfied leaving this place. There is nothing but praise for the quality of pizza made from this place and I can see why this place is one of the favourites of the city. A must visit.

Brilliant

By john R |

My daughter wanted to go and see the friends building and then we just stumbled across this place . There was a queue outside which TBH sold it to us - NEw Yorkers must know ! The menu was on a QR code which was no use to me as Tesco mobile want a kidney just to turn my data on and it was a bit weird to rely on QR code and not have WIFI . Wasn’t really issue as we soon got paper menus . Service was very fast , this is definitely a get them in , get them out type of place , but that suited us perfectly. The pizza ,,, OMG ,, it was gorgeous, just gorgeous. Jugs of beer and amazing pizza - perfect!

SO GREAT!

By depennin |

We REALLY enjoyed our pizza and our visit here! The pizza we had was so good, the atmosphere was fun being in an old tabernacle and the staff were top notch! I will definitely go back!

Good pizza

By 23JDak |

We came at noon on a Friday and we were served almost right away. Customer service was fine. Pizza was very good although expectations were extremely high and it was hard to live up to the hype. We were satisfied though and price was ok.

Great Pizza!

By Kelli |

Came here on the recommendation of many local friends. We got the mozzarella sticks appetizer and a pizza with pepperoni and basil. Everything was absolutely fresh and delicious. Definitely the best whole pie I’ve had in the city! The line to wait for a table gets quite long. Thankfully the line was bigger groups and we were just 2, so we were able to be sat in the outdoor space immediately. I’ll definitely be back here!

Great Pizza

By breakout35 |

Pizza is so personalized that it's always a little unfair to give grades. That being said, this place is REALLY good. Is it the best place I've ever been? No....but it's a really solid pizza. Knowing how highly regarded it is, I tried to keep my expectations at a reasonable level.

Ok Pizza Worst Service

By Max D |

Pizza is NY styled which is the type you get in the street slice places which is way to do it especially if you can’t eat an entire pie. NY styled pizza is quite filling with lots of dough especially at the end and these days I can only eat 3 slices tops but the smallest pie here is about 6 slightly smaller slices so if you’re by yourself you basically have to box the rest to go. The ingredients are fresh but where is the cheese? Almost non-existent. Feels like all I was eating was pizza dough which if I just wanted pizza knots, I could’ve saved some money. Seats are old and uncomfortable. Worst of all, they gave me check without me even asking so that is universal sign to get out, we need the seat. But I get it, this is busy place and somewhat touristy but really for no reason since it’s all hype. Pizza is eh. Joe’s is better as well as many local pizzerias in Bensonhurst and parts of Brooklyn which are way better than this place and you can get slices in all of these places. So I paid as fast as I can since they don’t want me here even though I only stayed here for a total of 30 mins max. Believe me, as someone who loves burger and pizzas and living in NYC for over thirty years, there are way better pizza places than this one.

Could be best pizza in NYC

By njmomongo |

Really good thin pizza, great flavor sauce, the 'sasso' pizza is excellent. Also had zucchini fries which were so good with their marinara sauce. Luckily there wasn't a line; usually there is.

No slices! The unique selling point here… but anyway, one of the best pizzas you’ll ever have

By HHFly |

Many celebs have their pics on the wall, it’s crowded all the time, you’ll need some time to get in. But it’s worth it: great pizza, friendly service and an absolute must-go place every time I’m in the city. Take one of the suggested pizzas, they’re worth it!

Terrific thin crust pizza

By Cindy R |

We were freezing our backsides off while we waited in line for this popular spot. We had the yummy rice balls filled with cheese, a pepperoni pizza, and a sausage and veggie pizza. Our favorite was the pepperoni, but both were good. We visited with people at tables near ours, and the locals said they come here often. They are a well-oiled machine and get people in and out quickly, but we did y feel rushed.

Worth the hype

By Ildiko T |

We were very lucky to just wonder in for lunch on a Thursday and got a table immediately. Not only tourists, but also locals to come for a pizza which is always a good sign. No slices are available but a 14“ pizza is manageable for sharing, we did it as well. Thin dough pizza baked in a real charcoal oven. Excellent tomato sauce. It is not fair to combine the pizza with those in Italy because even there are many types depending on the geographic area. But John‘s is a great pizza, best I ate in NyC so far and the ambient is very welcoming staff is friendly! Well worth a visit we will be definitely back.

Service without a smile

This place had been recommended by a few people, so on our last day we decided to give it a go. We sat outside, when the waiter asked if we were ready to order. We were confused as no menu had been given, so we asked for one. The waiter just pointed to a laminated card on the table with a QR code on it. A bit useless with a phone without access to WiFi at the time. Regardless of the service we still paid the 20% gratuity, when the waiter just snatched the payment out of my hand, without a word and walking away. Shame to end our dining out experience, with such a rude waiter. This guy really let the restaurant down

Little wait on a Friday night, worth it!

By bpm5515 |

Grandson picked John's from information on You Tube, I had picked another pizza place that rated better, need to show grandson Tripadvisor. Place was busy, appears to be a local's place, service was good, tables are tight with pizza on top, overall a good genuine New York Pizza experience, would return.

The Best!

By OttawaMarc26 |

I managed to drag our group of travellers here last weekend for lunch. It's a bit of a trek if you are staying in the vicinity of Times Square, but we walked and really enjoyed it. What a special joint. Once we got there (Sunday Afternoon) it was packed and we waited for roughly 35mins for a table. We were seated at a little booth and served up cold beer and two large pies - Pepperoni and Marg. Even with high expectations going in, these pizzas managed to over-deliver. Taste was beyond awesome - NYC coal fire pizza done brilliantly. We will absolutely be back on all future trips to the city.

Legendary pizza!

By Donald S |

There is a queue/line outside John’s for a reason… well a few reasons. First and foremost is the pizza: it’s incredible. But more than that, the place has tons of character and the staff are brilliant. We were in New York for a week with our three kids and ended up going for a second visit on our last night. I’ve had great pizza every time I’ve visited NYC, but this place was the best yet.

GREAT PIZZA

By karenCFC |

My husband wanted to visit here as he had heard great reviews. When we found it there was a queue but we decided to wait and wend down really quickly. We were seated at a table inside. We had one pizza between us as quite big. Had half pepperoni and half cheese. Absolutely lovely. We visit Naples a lot and this was just as authentic. The only problem was we felt we were rushed and they wanted us in and out as quickly as possible.

Long line but worth it!

By Dallas Traveler |

The best pizza that we had in New York! There was a long line when we got there about 9:15 pm, but it was so worth it. There are no slices here, just whole pizzas. We got a 16" for three people and ordered some garlic bread too. Really good food and a memorable experience.

One Bite recommended, bang on!!

By Samantha C |

With all the hype and reviews we had to stop at this place to see what the craze was about. When One Bite gives it’s a 9.3 it’s worth checking out when you’re in town. We go there around 7:30pm and waited a little in line to be seated. Once inside it’s a tight squeeze. The cubicle 4 seater sections are all wood and attached to the table behind you. I’m assuming it’s perfect since they don’t want you getting too comfy. I like that they kept the original location as is with the wood all marked up and pictures of all the famous people that have visited. We ordered the Cesar salad which was yummy, it had a slight tang to the dressing, it came with croutons but NO bacon bits. Then we ordered the Original with 1/2 pepperoni and it was delicious. We also ordered a Margarita pizza and it was yummy. I found the pepperoni a little salty for my liking but over all the crust the undercarriage was almost perfect. It’s impressive they use a charcoal oven to make these pizzas. My 10 year old son follows One Bite and was very impressed and agrees!!

Tourist Trap

By Max D |

This is only good if you looking for street pizza but why come here if that is the case? Best street pizza is Joe's at West Village or FiDi. If you looking for plentiful mozzarella and uber thin crust, this is not it, try Joe and Pat's or Rubirosa. Worst of all, service is awful and they just want you out to keep serving endless line of tourists. Pass.

Best pizza

By Phill |

John’s of Bleecker is the ultimate New York pizza experience. Whether you're a pizza connoisseur or just looking for a great slice of history (literally), this place delivers on all fronts. The combination of an old-school atmosphere, unbeatable coal-fired pizza, and decades of tradition make it a must-visit for anyone in NYC.

Simply the best!

By Francis D |

Great to pop in and taste the original Johns pizzas. Was exactly what my colleague and I expected. Those pizzas are big! Took some back to the hotel afterwards though!

Solid but not worth the hype

By Roland H |

Sauce very good. Dough average. Fun vibe in an historic spot. Zucchini sticks average. Salad boring. Worth going but not anything super special. Went on a recommendation that it was the best.

This place rocks!

By Robert F |

Fabulous pizza! Very traditional thin crust and coal fired NY pizza. Well worth the wait. The line to get in was out the door but it didn't take long. Will go back again and again (can't wait).

Overrated

By missbearface |

Overrated. The “sauce” was literally canned chopped tomatoes that hadn’t even been cooked down, they were just put on the base as they came. Not enough cheese. Base was burned by the coal oven Outside area smelled of lemon disinfectant. Not sure why people queue for a disappointing pie when you can walk to Joe’s on carmine for a fantastic slice.

Great pizza but mediocre service

By Gemma D |

The pizza here is absolutely delicious and the meatballs and garlic bread are also delicious. The restaurants gets pretty busy and always has a line to wait in before you can get a table but the food is 100% worth the wait the service on the other hand is not great, we have been here before and have always felt rush to order and the seating is not the most comfortable either but yes I would go back and yes I would recommend.

John’s is TOPS

By COGirl68 |

Great NYC pizza experience, pizza was delicious. Our table enjoyed two pizzas, one vegetarian, the other all meat. A plus knowing the pizza was baked in a coal fired oven. Good times!

Best Pizza in NY

By _lubos_novak |

Perfect pizza in New York, maybe also best on world :) I ordered large pizza with peperoni, garlic, mushroms and extra cheeseeeeeeeee

Fabulous Pizza

By L_Nich747 |

Stopped in at John's for Pizza and it didn't disappoint. We had a pitcher of beer too...safe to say we didn't need dinner. Staff were polite and the walls are full of famous people that have previously visited. Would recommend 👌🏻

Incredible pizza

By Duart88 |

I’m a total snob, I refuse to accept that you can get a proper pizza anywhere outside Italy. That was until I had a pizza here. One of if not the best pizzas I have ever had. It was simple but just cooked perfectly, sauce was incredible and a perfect amount of topping, base crunchy but not hard. What more can I say, it was a pizza and it was incredible. There’s a lot of pizza joints in NYC but they would be hard pushed to be better than this one.

Excellent pizzeria!

By GKB16 |

Its obvious why there is a queue here, a restaurant full of character with delicious pizza! The food was excellent, and we loved it. Thank you

Good pizza, but left with a bad taste

By mhershey |

This is a place my family has visited during each NYC visit, but this time we were disappointed. The pizza was fresh and good, but not exceptional. It arrived fast and we enjoyed it.... and then someone came and said people were waiting and they wanted our table. We were at a table for 2, and we had literally been there a total of 30 minutes. Everyone around us had been there longer. Still finishing my drink. Walking outside, the line had 4 people in it. We waiting in a longer line than that. This soured the whole experience and we will not be back. Too many other great places!

Nice pizza

By BackPacker800547 |

It doesn't look much from outside but opens into a huge room. I'm guessing an old music filled bar, and perhaps a bit of a waste as a pizza joint. Decent menu of pizza and pasta. Have to say the charges for extra toppings are excessive Friendly service, nice and tasty. Slightly bizarre tiny cash payment discount on offer

Delicious pizza!

By Tor |

I had seen this place mentioned in some Reddit threads, but wasn't planning on eat here. I recognized it when we walked by randomly during lunchtime and saw a line outside. We decided to come back here for dinner on a Monday night, expecting a wait. The restaurant was bustling, but we were seated right away. Service was quick and pizza was DELICIOUS. We ordered a medium cheese pizza - the slices were generously sized, but we finished it easily because it was so good. Great for two hungry people to split!

Worth the cold and rain

By rbe1023 |

Waited an hour in the snow and rain for a table for one. It didn’t disappoint. Had their caesar salad and pepperoni and peppers pizza. It was still delicious the next day. Price point was fair and good customer service.

Classic old school pizza

By Bev L |

A New Yorker friend brought us here for a quick lunch. Classic old school pizza place (no slices, just pies) with char-edged thin crust pizza . Celebrity photos on the the wall are fun to see. The place gets busy and the wait outside can be long, but we lucked into a seat right away at about 1PM on a rainy day.

Just not up to all the hype…really wanted to love it.

By Bob & Patti |

After all the raves and the rarified rating on by Portnoy I was frankly underwhelmed. Not as crispy as other thin style pies with a somewhat bland flavor profile. Only a bit of char on the crust was a little satisfying! We ordered the pie well and kept the box open before immediately eating following best practice. But just not a 9 range… even 8.0 is a reach. With all the history and hype expected much better. 7.8 and I’m being kind because the people were so nice!

Best pizza in NYC

By José A |

I visited John’s with my family and shared a large pepperoni pizza. It was absolutely fantastic – probably the best pizza I’ve had. The staff was incredibly nice and the atmosphere is as NYC authentic as it gets. A must-go restaurant for anyone visiting New York or looking for the true New York slice.

Good except for the pizza

By Peter G |

It was a cool evening (45 deg F) and the indoor restaurant was full. However outdoor seating was fine - an enclosed hut (like a greenhouse) with electric fire in the ceiling). Service was good. Unfortunately the pizza was disappointing. We had more flavourful pizzas in less renowned restaurants on the same trip.

Great pizza!

By Innerhousewife |

Sat outside and beat the long line that formed right after us. (They seemed to move everyone through quickly.) Had the caesar salad, and a pepperoni and Sasso pizza. The pizza was delicious with the right amount of sauce and toppings. Never saw our server again after our food came until she brought the bill, (no drink refills, etc) but I would eat here again if in the area.

Great pizza choice in the Village.

By Brandy |

Great pizza. The sauce was amazing. We got in line about 15 minutes before they opened and were seated immediately upon opening. Server was very attentive. Took our order quickly and the food was out in 5 minutes. Pizza is by the pie - no slices - but that worked for our family. We wanted to actually sit down and get out of the cold, and John’s is perfect for that. We will be back!!

Won our award for food of the holiday

By Harvey M |

Was told by a friend to go to this area as the food was quite good and plenty of choice. After a little walk we decided to go into Johns. Was lucky to get a table inside great atmosphere great decor not plush but perfectly matching the food. The pizzas are out of this world extremely large and very tasty the golden ale was very nice and not a bad price for New York compared with other restaurants was offered a box to take the pizzas away that we just couldn’t eat because they were massive. They tasted just as good the next day would strongly recommend this place if you want a good pizza in New York.

Great pizza in Greenwich Village

By smt106 |

The best pizza I’ve ever had! Visited with a local who recommended John’s Waited outside in line for at least a half hour, it was a nice night so we enjoyed being outside. Tight seating inside, but adequate. Looking forward to returning!

A family friendly atmosphere - good pizza

By Timo Marquez |

A nice cozy place with great thin crust pizza. A nice stop if you’re in the area and it seems like a museum with the art and photos of different actors.

The lines are worth the wait

By Oma329 |

New York pizza has the reputation of super-sized and greasy and we passed lots of people outside other pizza places that confirmed it. John’s is different in a very good way - thin crust, excellent sauce and just enough cheese to make it easy to eat without grease sliding down your arm. You can’t buy a slice: you have to buy a whole pie but it’s light and not at all impossible to eat the whole thing. There was a line when we arrived, but we were seated quickly and our server was very attentive. We’ll go back the next time we’re in NYC.

Buonissima!

By Mara P |

THE pizza spot in NYC! If you want to try the typical NY pizza, then visit John's pizzeria on Bleecker Str. Delicious and fresh food!

Rude and disgusting

By Antonino D |

After 30 minutes, with that disgusting pizza that tasted only of garlic still in our hands, we received the bill and were asked to speed because there were people in line. 30 minutes since we had our seats!

No

By Giovanni F |

This Place Is bad and the workers are not polite to US because they didnt let US sit where web wnated

The greatest.

By sosigbap |

Unreal. The best pizza I’ve ever had. It makes me sad that I live the other side of the Atlantic as I’ll not get to experience this pizza again for a while.

Destination Pizza!

By Brandon Godward |

John's is one of the OG pizza places in NYC. They use an old-school coal-fired oven and have been in business for close to 100 years. If you are looking for the best pizza in New York you absolutely need to come here first. The sauce is amazing, super rich, and zesty. Almost reminded me of more of a lasagna sauce. The crust is perfect. They do have several specialty pizzas that sounded amazing, but I kept it simple for my first visit with just half cheese, and half pepperoni. This is just textbook pizza. Highly recommend. Loved the vibe inside the restaurant. Come early to avoid the line. Amazing stuff. It's on every best pizza list. Tons of celebrities have been here. Dave Portnoy gave John's a 9.3

Amazing Pizza

By Ken & Rose |

The best pizza we’ve ever had Staff are really great here and you get a real authentic NYC experience. The food is top quality, cooked to perfection and reasonably priced. The basil on the pizzas is a little powerful so may want to remove that if you aren’t 100% keen on the flavor The restaurant has real character to it and has pictures up of all the famous people who have visited for those who like that! James Gandolfini was on there so that really made us happy 100% recommend

Probably the best Pizza in Manhattan

By PaulGarnett |

The lines outside tell you the story. Local New Yorkers forming a line is the best recommendation a tourist can get for a restaurant. We only waited 2 minutes and got a table water served instantly. The place is battered all around the edges, the wood has been carved into by previous guests but this adds character and the whole place is full of people life and laughter. It was a unique experience for my family. The food itself, my goodness Meatball Spaghetti proper home cooked no frills goodness on a big plate big portion Probably the best I have ever had Cheese Large Pizza The cheese itself was perfect it should be made standard on all pizzas it toasted and retained flavour crispness and smoke Sauce sloppy tomatoes must be some special recipe it was good The base was crisp the dough light and slightly sweet What a triumph this Pizza was I recommend anyone that visits New York go to Johns if Bleecker Street and eat it

Great NYC Pizza

By JMIO70 |

We had a very nice family lunch last month at John's of Bleecker Street. John's has a great rep and it was definitely worth the hype. We ate 2 cheese pizzas that were delicious. It was so worth the trip into the city from Jersey.

EXCELLENT FOOD

By Elena S |

The food is excellent, we loved the garlic bread; also, the treatment is unbeatable: fast and with sympathy. Highly recommended.

10/10 - cannot fault it

By Harry L |

Amazing pizzas at good prices which are perfect for sharing with a big group. There was a great great atmosphere and the staff were helpful and lovely. 10/10 all round - cannot fault

Hyped up bad pizza experience

By Michael N |

My wife and I visited one evening just past new year and i have to say it’s probably one of the worst pizzas I’ve eaten. Mine had so much garlic and raw onion on it I was tasting into the next day. Not to mention my stomach was bad all night. The tomato sauce was abundant and bland. Dave Portnoy has a lot to answer for and has maybe had one slice too many as this was one of the worst dining experiences we’ve had and not worthy of a such a high rating. I’d probably go as far as giving it a rookie score of 4. We’ve eaten better oven ready pizzas. Shocking!

Over rated and disappointed

By Sightsee21777443723 |

Ordered the premade frozen pizza and had it shipped. Over rated hyped pizza. Would not order again. Crust is horrible, very little sauce, cheese was OK. Crunchy and burnt. Disappointed

Worth the wait!

By G F |

Came here while on a weekend trip to New York. A few friends told me that this is Dave Portnoy’s highest rated pizza spot, so we decided to check it out. The line was intimidating but after a couple of minutes, I could see that it was moving quickly. From the time we got in line to the time we left was only 57 minutes! The booths were a little snug, but the atmosphere is cozy and nostalgic. I can’t remember the last time I saw RC Cola on a menu; it brought back memories of my grandfather. Since it was 2 of us, we opted to skip apps or salad (which looked and smelled amazing) and just eat a whole pizza. It was incredible and worth the wait! The cheese is fantastic and perfectly melted. The thin crust had a hint of coal, which was delicious. The garlic powder and Italian seasoning shakers on the table were a surprisingly good addition to the pizza. We left stuffed and happy!

Not up to the hype -at all.

By Scotty2112 |

I came here because of all the great reviews, but my pizza was not very good; crust was tough and cheese left a yellow grease pooled on top, sauce was good though. Service not very good either. I was disappointed, too bad.

Perfect New York pizza

By Bucket List |

This place was recommended by family member who had visited a few years before our visit. The pizza was perfect. Cooked in brick oven. Sauce and crust were excellent and enough but not over the top with cheese. Menu was straightforward. Mostly pizza but saw a few pasta dishes. Service was friendly and fast. It is a small, casual place. There was a line waiting outside when we finished. Highly recommend for authentic New York pizza.

hands down best meatballs

By Pjenni |

I had their meatball sub. I have to say, hands down, the meatballs were huge and it is by far the best meatball sandwich i have had. the rest of our group had pizzas, and they like them to. glad we stopped here.

Amazing Pizza

By Matt D |

I love trying new pizza spots when I visit NYC. John's on bleeker may have changed that, I'm just not sure I can find a better pizza. The pizza was amazing and a definite stop next time I'm in town.

Best Pizza in West Village

By Zalmasri |

Mozarella sticks were delicious, pepperoni pizza was superb, very flavorful and the crust was crunchy and had the smoky flavor of the wood oven. Vegetarian pizza wasn’t great, it’s loaded with thick crunchy green capsicum peppers which ruined the flavor.

Rude waiter left a sour taste in our mouths

By Lucy R |

The good pizza doesn't make up for the ridiculously rude waiter. I can't help but feel this place is living off its reputation which it no longer lives up to.

Great NYC pizza by the pie!

By Joe N |

John's is always a great pie! Don't bother with Joe's, go to Johns! For real, it's an experience and well worth it.

True New York style pie

By Alan P |

Johns has the classic NY pizza. Thin crust with the traditional burn marks on the crust. The appertizer meatballs was excellent. The ceasar salid was also very good.

Exceeded Expectations

By Heidi W |

For all of NYC's pizza competition, John's of Bleeker rose to the challenge and exceeded what I thought were overhyped reviews. Able to sit down promptly, outside, and with very polite service. Pizza was excellent. Period, end of sentence.

What a disappointment. I am

By Ryan C |

What a disappointment. I am a food tour guide and know the city’s food quite well. Have tried a LOT of pizza and just had never gotten around to John’s. All I can say is I don’t see what the big fuss is about. The pizza was bland at best and there was an aroma of bleach in the air and on my palette during the meal. QR code menus were not mentioned by the staff when we arrived so we sat there for a while without realizing no one was coming with a menu. Waiter tried to upsell us on things shamelessly without even trying to appear genuine and at no point did anyone come back to check in on us. Then they came and tried to clear our table while we still had several slices of pizza and half a picture of beer still remaining. If this is supposed to be the best pizza in the city I hope I came on an off night cause I’ve had much better pizza that was cheaper and less famous than this— and the service was non existent. To say it feels like they are resting on their laurels is an understatement. Def felt like a tourist trap. Oh well. Plenty of other pizza to be had in the area!

The best pizza in NYC

By Joe N |

John's of Bleecker is the best pizza you will have while in NYC. The sauce is tangy, the cheese is creamy and the crust is charred to perfection. Pizza simply doesn't get better than this.

Wow

By Gareth H |

Heard so much about this place and it lived up to it 100%. Beautiful pizza - sauce was amazing, crust off the chart. Nothing too special about the restaurant itself and the beer was average, but it’s all about the pizza

Must go here for the best pizza in New York

By pakiri |

The pinnacle of New York pizza. The crust, crisp and also chewy... the cheese, robust and balanced, the sauce bracing and tangy.

So good, had to have it twice!

By Leslie |

Our second time to John's and it was just as mind blowing as the first time - quick queue to wait - fast service, phenomenal pizza! The photo doesn't do it it justice - 10/10 highly recommend for all NYC visitors.

Best NYC pizza

By USTrvlr12 |

Probably the best pizza I’ve ever had! It was fresh and the ingredients were top notch. Only reason I gave it 4 stars is bc there is a sandwich board outside that we honestly missed. We stepped inside behind another patron that had walked up with us and a man came and told us to wait outside. He followed us out, pointed where to stand then pointed at the sandwich board and walked away. The sandwich board did have clear directions but we were confused why the other patron was helped and we were pushed out. We were sat very quickly after standing outside but it was just kind of weird. The waiter we had was great and he was very polite. Best pizza around for sure but just be aware of the signs outside.

How is this place possibly rated so high

By Pierre1999 |

Ate there with friends this month ( take out). Between the rude staff, and honestly some of the worst pizza I've had in a while, it's got to be just really good at marketing. Everything about it was poor. The sauce, yikes. And yes I'm a new Yorker born and raised.....

Six stars

By Greg S |

Been going to John’s for over 30 years (omg has it really been that long). Brought my wife here 20 years ago and this was the first time with our two hungry sons. They LOVED it (phew). Best pizza ever and an atmosphere to make you get with the NYC vibe straight off the plane. Go here, just go here. PS. Go here ;)

Finally Made It

By dgdssdish d |

Tried a couple of times in the past but things never worked out to hit John's. Coal fired perfect sauce to cheese ratio. Crispy thin crust and only whole pies here. Staff was pleasant and efficient. It was so good on our recent trip we went back a second time to make sure it was good. Excellent pizza and if you have real knowledge of pie you will appreciate it even more. Straight in the first visit but 20 minutes to get in the second time. Line moves fast and it is worth the wait. Easily the best we have had in NYC so far. DeFara's and Lucali's are next.

Iconic space! Wonderful pizza.

By ReginaCVieira |

An iconic pizzeria in New York! The space is small but welcoming. Despite the queue, it didn't take us long to get in. The pizza was delicious, as were the starters.

Worth the wait

By B K |

Yes, the line is outrageous but definitely worth waiting for. The very best pizza in the city. Make sure you get there at least once.

Truly terrific pizza - wine upgrade needed

By Thomas V |

So it had been awhile since I went to John’s Bleecker , which is much , much better than the Time Square location . It was my wife’s first visit . Pizza was fantastic as I remembered it to be . We started with a salad which was basic and fine , as was the side of meatballs . We had a half carafe of red wine , a merlot which was pretty terrible . We like our wine , so the next visit will be pizza with soda or beer . Inside is cramped but we were lucky to have a corner table so we didn’t feel it as much . Go for the pizza , it is truly a NY Pizza experience but be prepared for a gritty , pub like experience.

Met high expectations

By TerryR |

We beat the lines by going at 11:30 for lunch on a Tuesday. Lived up to reputation as the best NYC pizza. We had pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms and roasted tomato. The crust is amazing and a perfect ratio of crust, sauce, cheese and toppings. We got the Mozz sticks as well - great, but only makes it harder to eat all the pizza. Super casual, house wines and beer to drink are fine. Try and get a spot outside if weather is not too hot.

Best Pizza in NYC

By Sussex Traveller |

This place is a must visit if you are in NYC. Nothing fancy just good, authentic New York brick oven pizza served fast, hot and in a really lively restaurant. Service is efficient yet friendly and the selection of appetisers is great, if a little reliant on the deep fryer. The pizzas are the perfect size for sharing and are not too greasy but still manage to be loaded with toppings. There was a line when we arrived but they work it really well and look for party sizes that fit the spaces they have so we only waited maybe ten minutes on a busy night with a full restaurant. On a previous visit when ordering take out they somehow missed my order and after about 40 mins realised and were great about it, they gave us all drinks whilst we waited and immediately made our order fresh and were super apologetic. Its service like that that keeps people coming back, a lot of places just wouldn't care

Lives Up to It's Reputation - Excellent Pizza

By Joseph M |

We had "The Sasso" pizza (14") for $26. It is the best of NY Style Pizza's that you will find in a restaurant. They don't do slices here (not a street pizza joint). Thin crust, excellent tomato sauce, and no grease. The place was packed. Expect a line. Will will go back.

The Cheese Pulling…10 out of 10!

By Mom’s Jams |

When one’s visitor requests a quintessential NY 🍕, one must deliver. Success! The 1 train (Subway) got us within walking distance to John’s Pizzeria and we only waited in line for approx. 12-15 mins. for a late Sunday lunch. The dining room that’s frozen in time and the celebrities gracing the walls, welcomed us in. The service was stellar and the 🍕 was fantastic! After the first bite, two kids stated enthusiastically, “the cheese pulling is 10 out of 10!”. Another kiddo said, “this is really good 🍕!” There isn’t anything else to say. Go now!

Incredible Pizza

By Scott Griest |

Stopped in late on Memorial Day. Was seated right away and ordered a medium pepperoni. Place was packed so took 25 minutes to get our order. Medium provided three good sized slices. Dough was thin and cooked to a nice light char. Cheese used was rich and flavorful. One of the top three pizzas we’ve had in the USA.

Great find for authentic pizza

By maui1728 |

Amazing pizza, cooked to perfection and lots of flavorful sauce. Not doughy and not caked with too much cheese. Hole in the wall atmosphere in a great location with down to earth and friendly staff. Best of 5 pizza places we tried while in the city.

Great pizza place!

By Kevin B |

This is a fantastic pizza place and well worth the wait. I came here with my wife and a few friends back in November and we waited about 30 minutes on a cold, rainy night, which wasn't too bad. The atmosphere inside is great; it's cozy and feels like a neighborhood pizza place should feel. Service was good and our carafe of wine was delicious as well. We got two pies: a margherita and the Jimmy Gambino, both of which were delicious. This is authentic NY pizza and it's one we'd definitely visit again!

Good pizza in a nice area

By Jordan_D |

We arrived with very high expectations. The pizza is very good, but maybe not the best in New York. However, it is a nice place and, given its fame and the beauty of the area where the pizzeria is located, a visit is almost a must.

Excellent pizza, worth the queue

By S9ssyp |

We deliberately saved our visit to John's for our last night as we'd heard and read such good things about it. Knew it was going to be busy (Friday night) and as expected the queue was down the street. Both locals and tourists were in the queue which is always a great sign to me. We ended up waiting around 20 minutes for a table, so seated much more quickly than expected. Our waitress was attentive though very busy hopping between tables, we didn't feel neglected at any point. The interior is bright, quirky and again the restaurant was extremely busy. Due to where we were sat I could watch the pizzas being assembled, I think I ignored my other half for most of dinner whilst I sat watching them utterly fascinated. We ordered a medium (14 inch) original between us which was just the right amount. We saw multiple tables order larger and take the rest away, as we were flying out the following day that wasn't going to be an option for us. All their portions looked extremely generous, from the side salads to the meatballs. The pizza was delicious, perfect balance of cheese and sauce with a gorgeously thin, charred crisp and airy base. I'm still thinking about it now many days later. John's appears to be one of the few Manhattan pizza places that doesn't serve slices but whole pies only. I'm assuming this is down to them being cooked in a brick oven but whatever the reason the whole pie is definitely worth the trip. I'd go back again without any hesitation.

Complete Disappointment

By Joe D |

Complete Disappointment. I talked up this place as a mecca for pizza, it is not. It might at one time have been, but believe me it no longer is. It pains me to write this review. They have given up. Meatballs were old and microwaved. 2 different pizzas ordered were raw. I mean really raw and undercooked. Could not believe a coal fired place undercooks anything. There are so much better choices. Skip the 30-60 minute line. It is not even close to being worth it. I hope they just had a bad day but I get the feeling they have lost their way.

THE.BEST.EVER.

By CraigMutch70 |

First visit to NYC from the U.K and wanted to try authentic NY pizza. Did a little research, and I follow Dave Portnoy and had seen his review. Went in on a Cold rainy Monday around 4pm and sat straight down. Ordered the Large John's classic with half pepperoni for me, my wife and 2 children.....So good came out in 10 mins, best flavour ever and the surroundings were rustic and interesting with pics of famous Patreons. So glad we made trip from 47th Street just to eat there. Very nearly ordered another small as I enjoyed it so much. 4 soft drinks, waters and Pizza 35 dollars! Bargain meal of our trip and tastiest.

Great NY daisy!

As an Italian, I loved John’s pizza. I recommend the daisy, the result is extraordinary. A great NY pizza. Maybe fortunately, we only waited 10 minutes to sit down. The super efficient staff. Recommended!

Amazing Pizza

Had to try the best pizza in NYC and was not disappointed. Pizza was super tasty and the restaurant has a fun old NYC charm. Usually don't like family style sitting but everyone around us were supper friendly. We will be back

An English couple in NYC for a few days randomly came across John's but really glad we did, great pizza, lovely relaxed atmosphere and good service, can't fault it.

overrated

By danjul12 |

was there on Monday night , Don"t believe all the hype people. Service was A1 .As for the Calamari ,meatballs and the Pizza, certainly not a 9.4 rating as per Barstool. Pizza was good but very average. Oooooooooohhhh were at Johns of Bleecker !!. Oh please .

A must for pizza lovers visiting Greenwich Village

By Jackinbama |

We visited John’s Pizzeria (Bleeker Street) for lunch on a cold Tuesday morning. We were in line by 11:10 for the 11:30 opening and I think we were inside by 11:45, certainly part of the first seating but they take in groups so they don’t overwhelm the wait staff. We shared a half carafe of red wine with our #50 (The Fifty) pizza. The pizza was great. The service was very good. The atmosphere was good but the restaurant is nothing fancy. The line to enter was much longer when we left. This is a very popular tourist destination and they charge accordingly. But I recommend going as it is a great pizza and a legendary experience.

Best NYC pizza!

By Patty M |

Visited this spot on the recommendation of a local. The pizza was amazing! Just the right combination of sauce and cheese and a great selection of toppings. It’s smallish and not fancy so you might have to wait for a table but it’s worth it! Best NYC pizza!

The best pizza in NYC

By Larry B |

My wife and son ate there earlier this year. Our son follows people who rank pizza and it came from both highly rated. I don’t eat crust…we ate at John’s three times in 3 days. I ate four slices, crust in all each time.

Delicious!

This pizza (Margarita) w/ Basil as INCREDIBLE! I'm incredibly picky and not sure how this could have been made better. Super fresh ingredients, excellent sauce, great kripsyness. Wow. Excellent and very friendly service. The wife and I walked from midtown about 1.5 miles away so we were looking forward to eating here. Showed and there was a line approximately a block long, hopped in line and we're seated within 10 minutes. Absolutely one of the best pizza's I've ever had. will go back for more!

Worth a trip to NYC for just the Pizza

By Manic_Mainer |

Our family of 4 loved this restaurant. I struggled where to get authentic NYC pizza on our first visit to NYC. Over 100 youtube videos and review later and John's of Bleeker was one of the top choices but we were still nervous. When I saw the building and the line (it moved quickly). 50 people waiting took 15-20 minutes. It was worth it. The only part we are sad about is that it is a plane ride away!

Well worth the long journey

Visited on 16th with my wife all the way from Scotland. This is definitely the finest pizza I've ever had. We had a 14" half margharita and half pepperoni. Price was very fair and service great. Definitely go here if in NYC and the West Village.

Good pizza if in the area

By cypjg |

Overall good experience and one I recommend if in the area. Not sure if I would take the trip to try it if nothing else is planned for the area. The pizza, mozzarella sticks, and garlic bread were all served hot and fresh. The pizza was a solid 4, good as were the break and cheese sticks. We pjs about $55 before tip to have dinner which is affordable for NY. It was highly recommended so glad we tried it. If in the area and the line isn’t too long (our wait was 15 mins) I would give them a try. Would not stand in line an hour though. It was good but not great!

Amazing pizza!

Amazing pizza and great service! A must go to for NYC pizza! Glad we took the the time to make the trip! Also try the rice balls.

How can pizza be this good?!

By LifeofRiley247365 |

It was our first visit here for almost twenty years and it’s exactly the same as I remember - incredible pizza! My 12 year old son wants to move to NYC mainly because of John’s! Can’t wait to go back - keep it up, John’s!

Don’t miss it

By sidmackem |

I came here 7 years ago for my boys birthday it was great then and nothings changed. No frills top pizza that doesn’t break the bank. Hopefully I will be back for another 7 years. You can’t book you que ans wait. But we waited 15 mins on a Saturday evening so not too bad. Most of the people in the que were New Yorkers so that’s says it all really

Great pizza, bad customer service

By FaMelHid |

This is a well known pizzeria in NYC with great reviews, BUT,…. Try to arrive much earlier than closing time…, short wait line, was asked to seat outside while letting other consumers in. Just a party of three. December is cold and outside seating tends to get colder even with the InfraTech warmers which are good by the way. Asked three times for accommodations inside but “I’ll check” was our only answer. Right when the pizza arrived then there was available space inside. Poor courtesy and customer service from one waitress, the other was kind and helpful.

Average pizza in a cute neighborhood.

Not worth the wait. The staff was friendly but after waiting 20 minutes to get in I was expecting a lot. The pizza was tasty but Joes blows this place away. You can sit down which was nice.

Excellent Slice!

By chachamatina |

This place was great. Service was fine, not overly pleasant but fast and efficient. They did make a mistake (my friend can't have green peppers and they put them on our pizza) but they quickly fixed it. 4 of us split a pizza with 8 pieces and we had a Caesar salad. Everything was great Salad was fresh and tasty. The pizza was fantastic. Classic thin New York pizza. We had to wait in kind of a long line to get in but it only took about 20-30 minutes. They are super fast in there! There is outdoor seating but we went wherever they put us because it was very busy. Overall a great experience.

cant be beat for flavor

By david b |

John's cant be beat in my experience for flavor and for putting it all together- but sometimes they are off and the pizza is overcooked or undercooked and when it comes to pizza u got to get it just right and John's pizza needs to be devoured quickly for once it cools it loses some flavor. the place remains beat up- and its been beat up for over 30 years - some call it atmosphere- I call it dated and beat up. service is ok but nothing special. if flavor is your thing in my experience when John's is on their game they cant be beat. go early and enjoy

Still legendarily after all these years.

Stopped on on our last night in NYC. We were SO delighted to be able to walk up and be seated directly after a snafu on the 1 line lead to an hour long delay getting to John's. My wife an I polished off a pitcher of Peroni while we enjoyed the arancini appetizer, and a sausage pizza. My son had garlic bread and an order of meatballs. The meatballs were way overcooked but the sauce made them acceptable to eat. The service was good for NYC, it was great to finally eat a legendarily good pizza.

NY Pizza Time.. just dig in!

By Aswathi Warrier |

When in New York try the NY pizza! And this was a good one! Absolutely loved the garlic bread. Also tried the mozzarella sticks which was good. We liked the Boom Pie. Very good crust and sauce, felt a little less salt but once you add the red chilli flakes it’s perfect. Their merlot wine was amazing, and having good seating is a huge plus. I would say great place to chill, have some wine, and have some good NY pizza!

Amazing

By Nichola M |

Loved everything about this place, saw it on social media as a must and boy it didnt dissapoint, we were lucky and beat th3 crowds and walked right in, went with my two boys and got the margarita pizza large and found it very reasonably priced considering we were in NY. It came within about 15mins and it was simply stunning and id go to say best pizza i have ever tasted. It was so good we ordered another straight after and went for the meat one and again stunning. Loved the Service and the old decor. 100% must

Maybe the best pizza in NYC

An actual damn good pie. The place is legendary... and for good reasons. Quality ingredients, no fuss, amazing dough. Perfect!

Great pizza at great value in an atmospheric building

By seh1066 |

Excellent pizza in an atmospheric restaurant packed full of history. Fascinating to see all the famous celebs who’ve visited. Pizza itself best to split as enormous!

Great pizza with a great atmosphere, something different!

By Valdete |

Very fine pizza with super toppings selection! The atmosphere is great, the service very friendly. The space is relatively small and yet a beautiful atmosphere is created.
