We read up about this place and had to stop. It was a chilly windy day so a nice bowl of noodles and soup was in order and we weren't disappointed, I had the classic noodle and beef that I added some pepper oil to while my partner had the spicy version. Both great. The pickled cabbage that was put out when we sat down was to die for. The best I've had anywhere. Service was very good.

This places looks like a dump on the outside but don't be filled by it. Best dumplings I've ever eaten. And I've eaten a lot of dumplings! Find it and enjoy!

I went to this place the 1st night of a six day stay in New York. It is very small and cramped as far as seating but the Dumplings are DIVINE. I ordered 10 dumplings and a noodle dish and it was by far the best thing I had ate that entire trip. As a bonus, the dumplings are super cheap and the noodle dish wasn't expensive as well. When seated, you can see one of the guys hand beating the dough for the noodles. I would highly recommend this place.

My friend told me to try this 'hole in the wall' Restaurant. The place is very small and you may be put with strangers at a table. Everyone was friendly, with the customers helping us order. You can see a man in the back making noodles. It looks like a hard job. Everyone we talked to at our table was from out of state and always stopped by for their noodle soup. One man said his relatives from China said the noodles were better than noodles in China. The pan fried dumplings were awesome. You get 8 for $3. I got a #2 soup which was tasty. That was $7 and a huge bowl. I'd share it next time. Next time I'll try the dry noodles that are 'knife cut'. It's more like noodles in a gravy versus a soup. Knife cut are bigger noodles that are flatter.

Don't expect any service but for what you pay, who cares! The noodles are freshly made and are amazing but my favourite is their fried dumplings - delicious! Oh yeah the place gets very busy so good luck finding a seat!

I love dumplings and I knew in New York I would have the chance to enjoy dumplings almost as good as in Asia. I found an article online (The gothamist) and they recommended this place. This is a very tiny place in Chinatown and not fancy at all. This is the perfect spot for an amazing and quick bit solo or with a friend. You grab yourself your drink from the fridge. I ordered fried and steamed dumplings and they were literally delicious. It was so good I repeated the experience three time by showing this place to my friends. A dumpling Gem in the city.

I found Lan Zhou just by walking around Chinatown for a snack. What a snack! First the place is very nice and new. It is on a rather seedy side of the neighborhood but was all lit up and welcoming. The food speaks for itself and is excellent! I had the chicken hand pulled noodles stir-fried. It came out a rather large portion with lots of chicken. It could have fed two people easily. The noodles were perfectly cooked and came out hot and steaming. The sauce was a combination of a oyster and soy and had lots of flavor to it. I also had the pan-fried buns when there were no juicy buns left. The portion was three big buns, perfectly cooked and loaded with shredded pork inside. Not what I had wanted but delicious and a pleasant surprise. The whole meal was wonderful and I could not have been happier with the find. It is nice when you can find a new 'go-to' in Chinatown and Lan Zhou is it!

I love coming to Lan Zhou. The food is always consistent, the service very friendly and the prices are extremely fair. It is a nice place to go for a reasonable meal. For starters, I had the Pork and Chive Dumpling which were pan-fried to perfection and filled with a nicely spiced ground pork mixture. They were complimented by the soy dipping sauce that came with them. Each bite squirted into my mouth. For my entrée, I had the Shrimp Cantonese Noodle Soup with bok choy. It was the perfect meal on a cold winter night. The shrimp were perfectly cooked and they gave me a lot of them. The longevity noodles slurped in my mouth as I spooned the rich broth down with the noodles. It warmed me up inside and out. The family that runs the restaurant is really nice and it is fun to watch their kids play in the restaurant. It is a very lively environment even when there are few guests. It is the perfect place to go when you want to see where locals eat.

This place is short on decor -- like zero -- but you're not here for the looks you're here for the food. GREAT hand-thrown noodle soup. YUMMY dumplings. And the prices! Are we in New York or Kansas? It's actually affordable! What's not to love? Go here for a snack or a meal.

No frills, but tasty soup and dumplings at a great price! You can watch them make the noodles at the back.

Get any of the noodles and any of the dumplings. Sauce them up. Grab a beer. Eat until you're full. Pay next to nothing. That's literally everything you need to know. You're not here because the place is pretty. It's the food. It's all the food. You can even get seconds without breaking the bank. I can't wait to go back.

This place is located off the beaten path, but what a gem. The beef noodles are fantastic. I don't know-of many places that still make homemade noodles. I'm surprised Anthony Bourdain has not blown this doors off this place yet. I hope he doesn't. Part of the charm is the no non-sense ordering and menu simplicity. This is no frills, excellent food. If you want to be waited on, stay away from this place because there is no service or waiter to chat with.

I had not been to Lan Zhou Ramen in a few years and I stopped in Valentine’s Day night during Chinese New Year and could not believe they were so quiet. It was really cold that night and most of the tourists must have stayed closer to Mott Street which is the core of Chinatown. After I arrived, more people came in so I was not eating by myself. The food and the service were excellent. I started my meal with the Pork and Chive steamed dumplings, which were excellent. I got six very nice sized dumplings with a soy dipping sauce that were perfectly cooked and I highly recommend ordering them. I also ordered the Tiny Panfried Pork Buns and the order arrived with three round buns filled with ground pork with a dipping sauce. They were wonderful too. For the main dish, I ordered the Longevity Noodles with Chicken and the noodles are made fresh in the restaurant. The dish was loaded with slices of chicken and fresh vegetables. The dish could have served three people and it was delicious and even better the next day. The service was really nice and it was a nice evening out.

A hole in the wall with DELICIOUS food. The pan fried dumplings are a must try!! They have an incredible pork filling, with almost a soup sauce inside - and the perfect amount of light crisp on the bottom (they aren't greasy or deep fried). You can even buy 50 dumplings to go (frozen) and they'll give them to you in a plastic bag. The noodle soups are also amazing - lots of options like beef, vegetables, duck, or more adventurous things. Tips: This place is cash only - but it's inexpensive so you don't need to bring much cash. And flag down the servers to order (ordering by the number of your meal from the menu on the wall is the easiest). They also have a fridge of cold drinks - go up to grab your own. If they're hand pulling the noodles in the back, prepare for some loud slapping noises - but it just adds to the ambiance. Limited seating (a couple big tables & some counters) but it turns over quickly. I LOVE THE FOOD HERE!! PAN FRIED DUMPLINGS!!

This is always a stop when I'm in NYC. Great dumpling and a cheap price. Made fresh and the place is a hole in the wall. Love love love it

Small restaurant in China town near Bowery, heard about the dumplings at a decent price and showed up to find it was true. 8 decent size pork dumplings boiled or fried for 4$. Nice du.olings with decent flavor so would recommend to anyone passing by.

I came here for the fried dumplings which were perfect in every way, cheap and delicious. Hand-made noodles were also extremely tasty. Don't come for the decor/ambience but hard to beat the offering.

Small place with 2 tables and some counter space. Look on the board for the menu and order by number. No service here so you must tell the staff in back what you want. Food comes quickly. We ordered the 10 fried dumplings for $3 and the Fish ball noodle soup. Dumplings were good, meaty and somewhat oily. The soup was dark and rich meat broth with 6 fish balls. The fish balls were different from what I've ever had before. A gelatinous ball of rice flour and inside is salted fish. Delicious and gooey with a nice salty taste. If you like salted fish, you will love this. This is a no frills kind of place. Don't expect smiles but do expect it to be good. Plastic ware only and disposable chopsticks on the tables and counter along with various sauces. A cheap meal with no ambiance, just tasty food.

We found this place at a list on the internet and its the kind of place that i wouldn't have gotten into it if we hadnt read such a good reviews... Their dumplings, specially the fried ones, are amazing. You should try their black souce (i dont even know what it was but i loved it). We had 2 bowls of noodles (wick were really good too but i preferred the dumplings), 2 orders of dumplings and 4 drinks for 23$, totally worth the walk!

My chef friend that lived in NYC recommended this place to me and said he would visit at least once a week. This is a very small restaurant but the food is great! I had the fried dumplings and brisket soup. The dumplings are filled with pork and fried gently. Use the provided chilli and sauce that you can find on your table, these are a must when visiting. The brisket soup with handmade noodles was delicious, although my girlfriends meat was quite fatty, I got must of got the good bits!! The noodles where soft but had a nice crunch and the broth wasn't too salty. If you are visiting China Town in NYC this place is a must. Buy some frozen dumplings to go.... we ate them that night!

This is for their new location on Bowery. At what point do we stop accepting rude service at Chinese restaurants? Why is it ok to throw plates on the client's table and not even bother to bring utensils or napkins? Why is it ok to chat on the phone with whomever (!!!) while taking an order? This must stop. This is a service industry and they should start paying attention to their customers. NEVER going back there again!

Bad service, they don't speak english very well. We ended up having something we didn't want to, even after inquiring about it several times. We asked how many dumplings came in the dumpling plate, she said "one dumpling". We asked what was the size of the dumpling. She took one dumpling from the kitchen and showed it. Then we asked again how many dumplings came in the plate. She said "one dumpling". To be sure we asked "so, it's $3 for ONE dumpling?". She replied "one dumpling". We never had dumplings before, we had no idea what to expect, so we ordered two dumplings. A few minutes later she brought us two plates of dumplings. Around TWO DOZENS of dumplings. Then we asked to put them to go, she nodded and completely ignored us. To top it of, little roaches were roaming on the counter.

The noodle soups are fantastic (especially the brisket one) and so are the steamed dumplings. The prices are similar to the famous Vanessas Dumpling House (cheap) and it is fun to go here.

🇺🇸We only ate the dumplings, recommended by my daughter who did the food walking tour in Chinatown, and it was excellent! One of the best dumplings I have ever eaten! I recommend to try it! We ordered "to go" and ate in the street, just ahead there is place to sit, some giant stones on the sidewalk. 🇧🇷 Fomos comer somente os dumplings, recomendados por minha filha que fez o food walking tour em Chinatown, e foi excelente! Um dos melhores dumplings que já comi! Recomendo provar! Pedimos “to go” e comemos na rua mesmo, logo adiante tem lugar para sentar, umas pedras gigantes na calçada.

Our daughter is from Shanxi province so we are always on the lookout for authentic hand-pulled noodles. We took a group of 13 to this tiny hole in the wall and completely filled the place up. The food was unbelievably good. We ordered a dozen bowls of noodles and almost as many plates of dumplings. We all stuffed ourselves, knowing it might be a long long time before we were able to enjoy food like this again. The meal was also ridiculously cheap. What a perfect lunch! If only we had a noodle house like this in Denver...

One of the things I loved about the original restaurant was the fact that the name was spelled the way a Cantonese would write it, but everyone from the noodle pullers to the waiter to the cashier, and the customers, were Mandarin speakers from the Mainland. The noodles were pulled; the chili oil was fragrant; the ingredients were authentic. The Lanzhou HPN place I visited on Bowery wasn't the same at all. First, the clientele didn't speak Chinese. Second, the noodles tasted similar to the good quality bag of wheat noodles I buy and cook at home. Third, the beef tendon (my order) obviously was stored in a dried form and had not been properly softened. Fourth, the chili oil was really rough and not fragrant at all. But, the service was OK.

Ok the place is a dump, dingy store front , crummy seating, angry looking staff, menu looks like some second grader made it with crayons. Now you can turn around, find a fancy Chinese restaurant and pay through the nose, or sit down, shut up, and have a giant bowl of noodles, made minutes before, for 6 bucks, add a 3 dollar order of dumplings and you are topped off, and leave wondering how you could feel so satisfied for 9 bucks. Watch the guy make them, looks so easy, go home and try it, let us know after a few years practice how you are doing.

Real good food. Had beef noodles and pork dumplings. Well good, would recommend to anyone who loves Chinese food.

If you want the best dumplings in NYC then this is the spot. The noodles are good but the dumplings are truly epic. It's cramped small and dingy looking with a line wiring to eat their yummy food. There's no A/C, you'll sit family-style with strangers and you'll become addicted to the steamed dumplings. Just give in now. Thankfully you can also but their dumplings frozen and eat them at home.

Must visit when in China town.. excellent dumplings and beef brisket soup with thick cut noodles. Don’t be offended if the waitstaff isn’t friendly..

Come here for delicious cheap food. Honestly this spot does one thing well - cheap good food. The service is ambivalent and the environment is forgettable. I recommend the steamed dumplings.

Value is excellent- 10 dumpling for $3 Not fancy- counter eating and a few tables - a little hot in sept. The filling is perfect combo of meat and spice. Loved it !

Lam Zhou recently moved locations, but the food and management is still the same, albeit slightly higher prices for a cleaner/larger venue. The dumplings are one of the best in the area -- the juiciness is real. The ingredients for the noodle soups are okay, but the real hit are the actual noodles themselves.

Yes, it is a no frills place. The noodles are spectacular. The fried dumplings were amazing. It cost more for the cab ride from Midtown than the food we had. Well worth the trip.

Great dumplings and noodles. Worth finding and popping in. Just a little shop with few tables . I like to grab some dumplings and eat and walk (3$ an order).

I am confused by this address as the one i just went to was in the New World Mall in flushing/queens NY. Exact same name! Mine was flat out excellent! The soups are out of this world and affordable! The pork/lamb burger...awesome! Its in the basement of the mall and worth the hassle of being in a congested area.

I read reviews about this place and wanted to try it, so I made sure I visited the restaurant while I was in town. I got the duck noodles and fried dumplings. The dumplings were fabulous and were cheap for what you got (you got 11 for only $3), but I didn't see what all the hype was about with the noodles. They weren't very good to me.

Fresh noodle made right in front of your eyes, great food and great price.

Best chinese restaurant in town, it's so affordable (the plate of 8 dumpings is only $3). You can also see the people cooking in front of you (everything is fresh and so yummy). Definitely worth it !!

Thought noodles and broth were just Ok....fried pork dumplings delicious and worth the stop!!....cash only place...very inexpensive place to eat

The dumplings are on point and priced to move! The variety of hot oils and siracha and vinegar let’s you season them on the spot. The dry noodles with pork ragu are soooooo delicious. If you want great service or amazing atmosphere go to mr chow. If you want some awesome noodles and real Chinatown flavor hit this place up.

Wasn't sure about this place when we opened the door. But we went inside. Small menu. Mainly known for their dumplings we had to try some. Light, delicious, heavenly. Many soups on the menu as well. Might be nice to try some soup in cold weather. I know when I go back though I will have 12 pork dumplings and be very satisfied.

Strolling around in Chinatown my GF and I craved a snack - what could be better than some dumplings? We came across Lan Zhou which is squeezed between to other eatablishments. Entering the restaurant we were barely greeted and casually sat down. The place itself is a a bit of a fixer-upper, but charming nonetheless. Having travelled through Asia and been to many Asian restaurants there is one quality that I look for to certify its authenticity; the constant battle between an elder in the kitchen and the rest of the staff. There has to be constant shouting or I'm out! We had boiled dumplings and noodles with vegetables that were amazing. It is what made this restaurant bloom to a full grown mega dumpling that was just awesome!! Including a beer, tea and some tip - the total was about $20.

This place is definitely a "hole in a wall" and seems a bit intimidating but the food is AMAZING!!!!!!!!!! And priced right! You get 10 fried dumplings for $3. I had the Dry noodles with minced pork dish and my lady had vegetable soup noodle with egg. It was so much food that we couldn't really finish it all and our meal only came up to $15. We will definitely dine here again. The only thing I would recommend is taking public transportation b/c parking is a nightmare!

The food in this place was another must eat place in New York City, The food was delicious soup noodles & dumplings, fresh and amazing value for money.

No tablecloth, no frills but the food is amazing. Good prices. Service is abrupt but that is not a big deal.

We came here after we tried another dumpling place the day before just a couple of streets away so I was a bit wary of Lan Zhou's because that one was not really good. It's a rather small place with about 10-12 seats so be prepared to sit with strangers. We had the beef soup and the dry pork noodles (it's only called dry because it's not the soup but it is saucy in fact). Both were very authentic and tasty, we really liked them and would go back the next time we're in NY. Oh and they make the noodles fresh before your eyes, it's a very interesting (and loud) process as they slap the noodle on the table multiple times! :) I have to admit I went back the same evening to try their fried dumplings (10 for 3$!) and they were also good with a variety of dumpling/chilli sauces on the table to accompany the dumplings. I believe you can also buy frozen ones for home preparation, they give 50 for 10$ I think. I'd go for it if I lived there!

The fried dumplings were amazing. 5/$2 8/$3. The inside was amazing they unfortunately were stuck together from frying them like a batch so I had to pick them apart but the inside is so good I didn't need anything extra and it's cheap it's. CASH ONLY. You can eat in with the two tables or single sitting along the wall but it's small next to what looked like a construction place. We could only tell by the large menu hung inside what it was.

I'm torn on how to rate this place. The hand made noodles were outstanding. I had them in a ox tail soup that was delicious. The pan fried dumplings were very good and inexpensive. The place was a dump and service was poor. But you owe it to your mouth to try this place out

A very rustic and authentic hand pulled noodle soup shop. $5.00 gets you fresh hand pulled noodle (beef) soup. $4.00 gets you dumplings, fried in wok or steamed, either are excellent choices. There is also a dry pork dish under 5.00 worth trying. You really can't go wrong here, in spite of the spartan rustic appearance. And watching the cook stretch and form the noodles in front of you, is alone worth the cost of the meal.

Great food in Chinatown! Now I can see how the Chinese food I've been eating in Long Island is not very good. Handmade dumplings were excellent as was their beef brisket noodle soup. Definitely worth the trip.

Small restaurant right smack dab in center of Chinatown. Two large tables that set about 6 people a piece and banquette seating for about another 8 people....and people flying in and out taking take out orders. This is a total amazing experience as you get to watch the guy actually making and pulling your noodles so they are fresher than fresh, "is that possible?"...you betcha. You can order a large bowl of noodles and any kind of broth in a bowl with assorted meats and vegies or dry noodles and meat and vegies. I've had both and love them both. The price is cheap cheap cheap.....like $6.00 for either one and you can order sides as well, we've had the dumplings (pot stickers) 8 for $3.00.....plump and juicy deliciousness. I've been to a few noodle places in NYC and even waited to get in at a few....this one beats them all....keep your eyes open cause it is easy to walk by it. AWESOME NOODLES. I go every year and will every year from here on in. You want noodles....go here....I love watching them make those noodles. What a treat.

Took a walk across the Manhattan bridge with my wife to hunt for hand pulled noodles. We found Lam Zhou and the most delicious treasure. Yes it's a hole in the wall, tiny spot with little seating. Yes they speak little English there but Hell Yes! They bang out some delicious noodles and dumplings. We tried both the fried and boiled dumplings both were great but I prefer the boiled. The #2 Noodle soup with beef brisket was outstandingly delicious. So go for an adventure walk in, go to the back where they are making the food and order yours. Grab a spot at one of the few tables, sit down with some locals and enjoy.

I am a sucker for noodles. The normal beef noodles were amazing! Reminds me of the bowls that I had in China. Noodle is just the right texture (may be a little hard for others). The soup was also delicious. Would highly recommend coming here just to get a nice warm bowl of noodles. Definitely worth every penny.

We went there because I like noodle soup a lot. Unfortunately this was not what I expected. The soup doesn't had the taste I hoped for. It missed a lot of flavor. The roast duck which was in there was only bone instead of meat and I expected more vegetables. My wife had a plate of fried rice with beef, but also that was not as expected. The service was quick and friendly. The price was cheap so the value for money is good.

We spent part of an afternoon sampling different types of dumplings across Chinatown. Wow - these were outstanding! And he price is unreal - 10 fried dumplings for $3. Definitely find this spot!

I visited this new location after they had moved; food is about the same. Definitely get the dumplings as they are good quality for a good price. Noodles I would pass on as there is nothing special about them.

This place easily gets 5 stars for what it is. And what it is, is no bs, no frills, good food for a low price. The original location on East Broadway was way tinier but just as good. The price has increased slightly but it's negligible. If you want good dumplings, this is the place to be. They're fresh and delicious pork dumplings, steamed to perfection. You can get the fried ones but why go for the inferior version? The noodles here are great too. Everything is made on site so it's always fresh. The regular noodles resemble thick udon and the knife cut is more like flat noodles/rice cakes. You're not coming here for good service or fancy plating. It's just good food and low prices. How can you argue with what works? Bring a bag of frozen dumplings home on your way out. You can steam or boil them whenever you like.

Not that the noodle wasn't good and cooked perfectly, but the sauce on the Dry Noodle with Minced Pork Sauce ($6) was awful, just awful. In addition, the leaves of steamed bok choy topping the dish were gritty! We will not be returning.

Our last day in New York and my wife wanted Asian food. We had spent the afternoon at the Metropolitan Museum, went back to Brooklyn to walk the dogs, we were dog-sitting while family was traveling and then ventured out to Chinatown for this daughter-in-law recommended restaurant. The fried dumplings were wonderful. I should have had two orders! If you ask for herbal tea ask for hot herbal tea. My wife ordered it and it came in a can! Our only mistake.

I had read that this was one of the best restaurants in all of New York for dumplings and noodles. A bit difficult to find and the restaurant is best classified as a real hole in the wall. The entry is very unpretentious and the decor and service of and in the restaurant itself is what I would call minimalist. The place was packed with a line out the door shortly after our arrival and many people came in for take out food. I went toward the kitchen and ran into the person hand making noodles. Fascinating to watch and he also took our order, but at the time I was not sure if he heard or understood me. Clearly he did because the lone waitress shortly brought out two very large steaming bowls of broth filled with dumplings and noodles which were excellent. Drinks are cold soda, water etc. and self serve. Prices are very reasonable. Table space is quite limited.

I went for the dumplings and got the boiled dumplings, not very good, and would recommend trying the fried dumplings BUT the stir fried beef noodles were fabulous and definitely our cheapest meal in NYV

My husband and I came to Chinatown looking for authentic Chinese food and found Lan Zhou. There is very limited seating so you may find yourself sharing a table with a stranger. The ordering system is unclear at first too. You have to seek out the waiter and tell him your order rather him acknowledging you first. There is no cash register or counter where you go up to order. I got an order of dumplings and my husband got the duck noodle soup. My dumplings were good but 12 is really quite a lot for one person to eat on their own. My husband didn't like his soup. The duck was really more of duck bones for flavoring rather than meat in the soup so we were a bit disappointed by that. It was neat to see them making the noodles in the kitchen. The prices are very reasonable but the menu is very limited. If you love soup and/or dumplings, give this place a shot but if you're looking for more variety, I would recommend somewhere else.

My sister-n-law and I ate here before our big day in china town! So delicious! We could have shared the dumplings - the orders are large- and we each got a bowl of noodles and those portions are large too! So fun to watch the young man making the noodles out of dough- absolutely a true cultural high light of china town! We loved every bite!

If you like tasty, handmade noodles and dumplings and don't mind sitting at a table with strangers or not being able to be seated, this place is for you. Located kind of out of the way on 144 E Broadway, this tiny restaurant with only 3 tables is easy to miss (especially if your app map is not working), but it's well worth the time and effort to find it. While eating, you can watch a guy making noodles, rolling and tossing them. The food was very, very good and the portions huge, and the prices inexpensive. If you like noodles and dumplings, this place is a must visit.

best handpulled noodles I've ever had (and I've had a lot of handpulled noodles. I'm a noodle lover). Don't expect great service because you're not going to get it, but the food is amazing. We got 2 bowls of oxtail noodle soup and an order of the fried dumplings. Everything was amazing. Definitely coming back next time I'm in NY.

This little hole in the wall restaurant in Chinatown serves the best dumplings you'll find anywhere. Aesthetics are not their forte, but the food is delicious and really inexpensive. Three orders of dumplings (we liked the fried best) & two waters was $11.00!!! In NYC!!! Tiny place, but worth waiting for.
Wonderful noodle soup on a cool night but the waiter did not listen to the order
I have to say one thing is that the food at Lan Zhou is excellent when you can get it. The service there was a little off this evening when the waitress did not bring either my hot tea and the steamed dumplings that I ordered. I was not sure what was going on because it was not that busy in the restaurant. Also, I wanted to order the roast duck for my soup but she said that they ran out of it. I ended up having the Shrimp Noodle Soup with Rice Noodles and it was excellent. I did not even need the other food because I was so full from the soup I did not need anymore food. The broth was so rich and deep in flavor. You could really taste the chicken stock. The wontons were rather small but tasty. The shrimp for the soup were well cooked, really large and they gave you a lot of them. The evening was very nice and even though she took everything off the bill that did not come to the table, she was very nice and the food came out promptly. She could not have been more pleasant. She turned a strange situation around and it was a nice evening.
