Approach with caution: rude and predatory

By Explore45167475044 |

I’ve been joining a group of friends for Saturday brunch here for a few months. They go every week; I go off-and-on, as I can’t afford to dine out very often. I had observed that the women waitstaff were very nice, but the one male waiter, who usually deals with us, tended to make rude and condescending “jokes” at the expense of our almost all-female group. He also refuses to split the check, even when we politely ask before we order. I have never been comfortable with this, but didn’t feel it was my place to rock the boat, since I go only occasionally. But yesterday was odd. Nothing anyone ordered was more than $20-$25 as listed on the menu, and when all 8 of us had paid our share plus drinks and tip, we were $80 short. That's short by $10 each person! For example: my item was $24 on the menu; I put in $30. (I know what it’s like to wait tables, so I routinely tip at least 25% for any service.) We struggled for quite a while to understand why the shortfall, but each of us ended up pitching in the extra $10 (I had to put in another $10 because one of our group ran out of cash; her husband passed away a few weeks ago and she's struggling a bit). To be fair, I am kicking myself for not looking at the bill myself. It turns out a large tip for the group had been automatically added to the bill, and both people calculating the split-out missed seeing that. So not only did we pay in cash, we double-tipped in cash. I realize there’s nothing illegal about being rude. I also understand that many restaurants are now automatically adding a tip to the bill, and that's not illegal either. However, I can’t afford to pay $50 for eggs benedict on a regular basis. The food is good, but not that good. And the whole experience now feels predatory.

Nice Brunch

By William J |

We had been here before ... they had a nice Belgium Beer Sampler tray... which we always had... unfortunately sometime in the past they discontinued it. Kinda of lowered them a half star because of it... Went there for brunch... beer and food prices for brunch were responsible for Manhattan... Waitress was Ok... however, never quite came over to inquire as much as I thought she should have... however, I don’t read much into this as only 1 customer. Important thing, brunch food was good and prepared exactly as asked for...

MUSSELS, MUSSELS, MUSSELS!!!!!!

By eventsbythirteen |

A Friend and I happened on to this fabulously, neighborhoody, spot in the Flatiron district, and, what a FABULOUS FIND!! Apparently, Sunday and Monday, are All you can eat Mussel nights!!!! The Mussels have about seven classic preparations to choose from, and frites, ( fries), accompany as does bread, to ensure eating all of the wonderful pot liquor, that is in every luscious morsel! Cooked perfectly, and accompanied in our case by a delicious Rose', this very Franco- centric place is warm and friendly, service ( by a very attractive staff), is excellent, just fabulous!

A Nice Gem of a Restaurant

By D Goodwin |

I have been to this restaurant several times over the past year and it's such a delight. The food is always amazing and the staff/owner are so cordial. It's a cozy spot that is great for a small group or a nice date. The food offerings are reasonably priced and varied. The spaghetti carbonara is my favorite as well as the croque monsieur! Definitely check it out.

Don't order a BXL salad.....

By carolkb |

After having some really nice things at this wonderful neighborhood Belgian restaurant, I decided to try something different. They make extremely good endive and Cesar salads, so I thought I'd try the "BXL salad". Sounded like a house speciality, listed as fresh market vegetables and chicken. I got a large bowl of particularly bland chicken, raw carrot cubes and something I rather tasteless I couldn't identify over some shredded lettuce. The dressing had no flavor. Such an otherwise nice restaurant should take that one off the menu (or warn the customers.) On other occasions I've had a very good onion soup, great salads, some first rate main dishes. Last night my husband's salmon was excellent.

Good Belgian Beer and reasonable

By Matt M |

I was in the mood for some Belgian beer and Mussels and originally was looking to go to MARKT which is right around the corner, however the wait was too long. So we stumbled around the corner and to our surprise we found a hidden belgian beer bar. They serve food here too and the mussels were very good. I thought the prices were reasonable (i expect to pay at least $8 for an unusual pint of Belgian beer) and the bartender was friendly. The place had people in it, but wasn't too crowded, just the right mix. I think they even make (or source) their own house beer which was pretty tasty. I have gone back twice already and a good place to catch up with someone over a cold beer.

Busy

By RX61 |

Having found that one of their other bars in 51st St was no more I was delighted to find there were two other BXL bars, this being the one a visited. Great beer, a wide range of Belgian/French dishes. Quite noisy, but then it is unsurprisingly very popular. My single stool at the bar was immediately reoccupied!

Feel Good Belgian in the Flatiron District

By SFDutchman |

Found this place on my last trip to NYC. Used to frequent a similar place called Markt, but found it to be too loud and cool. BXL Zoute is warm, welcoming, and truly a gem in the Madison Square Park/Flatiron District. Made reservations for two via OpenTable for a Wednesday evening (day before Thanksgiving) at 8pm. Restaurant was busy - every table was taken and it seemed many regulars patron this place which is always a good sign. A very good selection of Belgian and regional beers. We started with the Bitterballen which was served in a different way that I'm used to (in The Netherlands), but it was very well presented and came with a bit of lettuce and shredded carrots. Nice and cheesy and warm & delicious! Next came our entrees. We each selected a different kind of moules (mussels). I had the Provencale with tomato and basil and my dining companion had the BXL Special which came with cuvee BXL, endive and cream. Both entrees came with fries (which we had asked for well done and salt free) which were very good. This is now my go-to place in Manhattan for excellent Begian fare!

Neighborhood gem with great food & atmosphere.

By ABW638 |

Here for brunch on a Sunday. Excellent food & service. Would definitely come back next time in the area. Caveat for Sunday brunch: NY state law prohibits alcohol before noon....

Zoute Alors!

By Ann S |

Went here for a business meeting on a miserable rainy night. The atmosphere was inviting and our table was all set for us. The GF options are mainly mussels and that worked just fine for me! Steak tartare was nicely seasoned and the choices of mussel preparations were appreciated. I'll recommend this one for my beer drinking friends because that's the way they roll. Wines by the glass were limited but I found one that worked. Just it a spin!

Wife liked the mussels

By NittanyLion70 |

We wandered in because it was near the Hotel Cambria. My wife had the mussels in white wine with frites. The server was attentive. I had chicken in puff pastry. The sauce was nice.

Great hangout with a good selection of belgian beers

By craig2nyc |

A belgian bar must have 100 types of beer of more. And great honest food cooked with beer. This place has it all, in a nice setting.

Epic brunch session

By townsend416 |

This is a great brunch spot. Perfect for groups big and small and a little something for everyone on the menu. If you like beer, this is your place. Great service.

Excellent restaurant

By dpakman91 |

Really excellent restaurant. Have been here multiple times now. Fantastic Belgian beer selection. The roasted chicken with applesauce and fries is a great dish. The mussels are fantastic. Great selection of classic appetizers. Hard to go wrong here.

Pleasant atmosphere. Scrumptious food. Stellar beer.

By XcountryScholar |

Set in the heart of Chelsea, this is not the usual Belgian eatery in my experience. Instead of high ceilings and loud groups, this was a more intimate environment, suitable for couples and quieter conversation. The bright, inviting bar on one side offered a dozen ales on tap, including several rotating 'specials'. On the other, perhaps twenty tables for two, arranged in an uncramped line against a long bench. Both times I was there, there was a combination of what I assume were date nights and gatherings of friends-- an ebullient atmosphere throughout. The steak I had one night and the burger the other were cooked exactly right: the chefs know what they're doing, and I suspect they enjoy doing it! I was also struck by the attention I received from the maitre d' both nights--- good conversation about Belgian beers and helpful suggestions for pairings (the two dark St. Bernardus beers were delicious; I'm already looking forward to having the St Bernardus 12 next time). A reliably welcoming place with great food and drink---what more could you ask for?

Belgian neighborhood bar/restaurant

By ConnecticutNana |

Always stop at BXL when in NYC. Must have Mussels and Frites with a choice of sauces. Engaging and friendly staff contributes to the our enjoyment of our visits. Wide variety of beers and wine. Steaks and Burgers are outstanding. Thoroughly enjoyed bone marrow small plate which is not always available here or at other restaurants. Great place for Sunday AM brunch.

Great place!!

By Markbelgie |

We had some really nice Belgium beers and enjoyed the easy going atmosphere! On top of that: great food!! A big like!!! Especially recommend the 'Duvel'!! And the owner is a great guy to talk to to learn something about the Belgium culture and beers!

Belgian oasis in NYC

By Bruges_Girl |

Came upon this place by accident while looking for lunch on Christmas Eve. Great little Belgian bar run by Belgian’s . Fabulous food -the croque madame was better then we’ve ever had in Belgium-in typical Belgian style the Frites came with homemade Mayo!! Good beer selection including Krieks. Would highly recommend this branch though they have 2 other locations in Manhattan

Cool lunch spot

By 🛶🏕🍷🍸🍹 |

A pot of steamed mussels and. Bowl of frites along with a beer! What else could you ask for. Friendly staff and soccer on the TV too.

Cozy friendly

By MeeSh |

I am not sure what’s going on with this restaurant but the cozy atmosphere ,,, amazingly friendly,,,

Great place - loud and good food

By Dneuburger |

This place is a fun place for French/Belgian cuisine. The menu is varied and everything is delicious. We were a party of ten and tried pretty much everything and none of us was disappointed. The waiter had a good sense of humor, they had a nice bar (try the French ambush Cabernet) and tasty dessert (go for the chocolate mousse). Unfortunately they were out of prawns and they don’t have decaf cappuccino but other than those minor inconveniences this place was great. Enjoy!

Good spot for casual yet upscale-ish dining

By Yog-Sothoth |

In New York for a few days, met friends for dinner at BXL Zoute. It was my first time, not so for the others. Poulet roti was tasty if a tad on the dry side. Mussels were delicious. Bone marrow concoction was not a favorite. I had the cod, which was excellent and sat on a large bed of spinach. Despite the fact that we had quite a lot of cocktails, starters and entrees, the tab for four came to $235 before tip -- good value under the circumstances.

Belgian Sports Bar

By JoelAvonCT |

An enjoyable dinner experience in a Sports Bar right out of Belgium. As is typical of a New York City restaurant the space is long and narrow with a bar on one side and tables on the other. A number of beers on tap and various mussel dishes all wonderful.

Love their mussels!

By SGS1260 |

We came here just for the mussels. Love them! Atmosphere was fun. We arrived around 6 pm and got a seat, but it filled up quickly. There was a small seating area with couches for people to have a drink and wait that was nice. Service was quick.

For the nostalgic Belgian "feel at home" food

By tourleaderfrank |

Excellent Belgian cuisine, do not forget te "mussels & fries" but also "tomate Crevettes" and "Flemmish stew" accompanied with great Belgian beer. Friendly service.

Lots of mussels

By WestchesterP2 |

The food is delicious! Busy, energetic bar and dinner crowd. Menu selections are varied so you will find something to please you. Lots of mussels if that’s for you. Very reasonable prices. Staff is friendly. Unfortunately, too noisy for us to conduct a conversation.

New Belgian Restaurant in Flat Iron Area

By Jgoldchain |

Just has Sunday Brunch with 12 people at this new Belgian restaurant in the Flat Iron area. It was a pleasant surprise. All the food was very good at a moderate price. The French Toast was as good as any I ever had and the Mussels and fries were done to perfection. We had 2 different versions of the Mussels and both were perfect. The Cheeseburgers were also very good and tasted more like steak than hamburger. We were not rushed and lingered for quite a time talking and eating. The wait staff was very polite and even offered a child's meal even though one did not appear on the menu. I would strongly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for something a little different and very good at a moderate price.

A miss, a total miss

By Fabreeze131 |

We went to this place after the Metropolitan Room with a huge group of people. They sat us down quickly, and gave us out the menu. Almost the whole menu was in Belgian, with no subtitles. With a large group, it was hard to ask for clarification. I got the French onion soup, and the endives salad. The French onion soup had little flavor and burned the cheese and bread. Endive salad had a TON of endives, apples, with only a few leaves of lettuce, blue cheese and walnuts and the dressing had no flavor. My boyfriend got the meatballs, which for $20 some dollars, you would think you get 4-5 meatballs, but he only got 3. French fries, which people rave about, were meh. The staff was really nice, but the food, for what it cost, was meh and under seasoned. Definitely will not be coming back.

Great bar/resto!

By Dries_BE137 |

Been there twice, had the moules and carbonades. Great food, good prices, good beer, good service! All you can eat moules on monday.

Brussels, but bordering Flatiron

By apatheticguy |

Believe it or not, we had Easter Brunch for 7 at BXL Zoute. Great choice! The mussels were fantastic, the frites were also delicious, and the variety of brunch food fit the bill. We had eggs, we had waffles, we had chicken. Best of all, we had a wide selection of beer. Not just good beer, great beer. It's not quite Delirium's menu, but a nice selection of different styles, each with it's own unique glass: of course. I shall return !!!

Belgium in new york !!!

Amazing i can even say better then in belgium... I drank a triple karmeliet beer... Try it out !! Music was great, a great place for drinks and dinner .... Go try it out !!!

Awesome place one of my favorites

By Wesnile |

BXL on 23rd is one of my favorite restaurants in the city. Great for lunch, dinner, cocktails whatever. Business, pleasure, friends or family. Food is outstanding and the service is the best. Everyone here is super friendly. Great Belgian fare. Great beers and wines are priced just right. I pop in every time I am in the area.

A Truly Belgian Experience

By STEPHENCM |

If you want to experience a phenomenal choice in Belgian beers from lagers, Trappist, dark, fruit, ales and malts this is your place. If you are anxious to combine that drinking extravaganza with soccer on a dozen screens and a well chosen selection of Belgian dishes--you cannot do better. The steak-frite, steak tartare, mussel dishes and of course the Belgian fries are all superb. The atmosphere is lively, loud, congenial and you are met at the door often by the owner or at least his super-attentive staff who greet you with a smile and warm welcome. This is a fun-night. I would encourage this place for an office get-together after work or a a place for friends to hang out to have a great time.

All you can eat mussels

By Scott B |

Do I need to say more? The Thailandaise are the best! Great beer selection and food. All you can eat Mussels on Sunday and Monday, and the steak tartare is in the top 5 I've had.

BUCKETS AND BUCKETS OF MUSSELS !

By iamsoph |

My friend and I came here on a whim after Google-ing all you can eat mussel places in NYC and BXL Zoute popped up. This definitely isn' t the best mussels I've ever had but it hit the spot and is worth the price. The pots for the mussels are huge, helmet size if i had to compare it. The fries that came with the mussels were really good. They had different sauces for you to choose from but the sauces didnt really matter, at the end of the day the mussels came out tasting the same. The waitress was available when you needed her with a minor wait time. It wasn't too busy when I got here but it got busier when I left. Overall it was a good experience!

All Good Options

By mjsheridan130 |

Its hard to go wrong with Belgian cuisine and this restaurant affirms this belief. The cheese croquets are to die for! I will definitely be back to try even more dishes on the menu.

A HIDDEN GEM

By Martin G. |

Discovered this hidden gem while walking down the Street on our way to a different resto for a meal. My daughter glanced at the outdoor menu and noticed bitter ballen which is a Dutch food which my family enjoys. We entered and to our surprise this was a very cozy restaurant with a bar with screens running a football game. We were impressed and decided to stay for dinner. Great decision because the food is fantastic and everyone working in the resto does everything possible to ensure an enjoyable experience. Met the Owner who hails from Belgium (I suspect that is where the BXL comes from). A very engaging personality and warmth! When our travels take us back to Manhattan (probably with the next few weeks) we will be sure to visit this restaurant again. Best kept secret in Manhattan as far as I am concerned.

A little slice of Belgium in NYC

By limpidlizard |

I am a big fan of moule-frites and Belgian beer, so was very happy to find that BXL Zoute was a short cab ride from my Gramercy Park airbnb. A small ground floor space across from a parking ramp, it serves typical Belgian comfort fare with a terrific list of draft and bottled Belgian beers at VERY reasonable prices for NYC. It is a fun place with a long bar and a welcoming staff. Highly recommended!!

Good Times

By Gina P |

A get-together with college roommates from a long time ago...there were 7 of us and we stopped in for a few drinks before going out for dinner. Great place ...our waitress was so attentive and very personable. It made our visit that much better! Will definitely go back the next time we are all together.

Charming place in a big city

By msa23_2000 |

Recommended to go here by a friend. It is cozy and charming in the middle of a big city. The madam sandwich is excellent. Service is excellent and quite friendly. Prices are reasonable. I highly recommend.

Belgian charmer

By don u |

This is a great neighborhood gem with good food (8 styles of mussels, yum), good wine list and very nice selection of beer. Great friendly efficient service and my wife and I are out the door for between $75-$100.

Great selection of Belgium beers and great food

By Markbelgie |

This is a very nice place right in the middle of the flatiron district! Great and friendly service and an amazing selection of Belgium beers!! The food is great, but hey, it's from Belgium! What else to say ;)

Nice place for a Belgian lunch and a low price.

By movingon014 |

If you like mussels this oddly named little bistro has a deal for you. For less than $20 you get a choice of appetizers,.{I like the pate dish], main course and a glass of wine. My favorite main course is the Mussel dish which is offered in multiple configurations. Service is brisk and seating is reasonably close. The bar is large and well stocked. There's a bumming, busy, buzz to the place but it's pleasant enough to come back repeatedly for the fare.

Nice food and friendly staff

By dmac72 |

Staff very nice after arriving quite late for dinner. Ended up sitting at the bar. Great selection of beer (as expected), and they have bitterballen, but it's a lot more cheesy than meaty. Will definitely go back - nice beachy interior.

Best Belgian food in the US

By LeentjeChicago |

As a Belgian foodie living in the US (Chicago) I have tried many ‘Belgian’ places but this by far the most authentic it gets. I love every single dish and would book a flight just for their ‘grijze garnaalkroket’! The place is cosy, family friendly and reasonably priced. I go there at least once every time I visit NYC.

A little BE in NY

By DeWolf77 |

Don’t be repelled by the commonness of the street, don’t be misled by the rather unappealing facade or the size of the entrance, as behind it you will discover the most beatiful Belgian café/restaurant! Obviously offering a wide selection of beers, but also some typical Belgian specialities. The place, including the toilets, display Belgian ultra-coziness. I actually had my very first Duvel from the tap here (even in BE, Duvel exists only in bottles). And hey, they speak Flemish and French :-))

Fabulous party!

By ei442 |

I just held a party at BXL Zoute with about 3 dozen attendees ranging in age from 5-92. All of us were thrilled with the food, atmosphere, and service. Living in another city, Klass, the manager helped me with all the arrangements including my special requests for an appetizer and dessert display. I also requested the soup of the day to be something cold and served in little glasses so the guests could enjoy it while mingling. I let my guests order off the menu and the food was so delicious, with large portions, that several people ordered multiple entrees or else more appetizers after their meal just to try another delectable sounding item. Among us we must have had every possible choice. The major hits were the mussels (of course), salmon, cheeseburgers, steak and chicken. I had an occasion cake delivered from a local bakery and the staff parade it through with sparklers before slicing it. In addition we had the desserts mentioned before. Hard to know if the waffles or espresso creme brulee was the bigger hit. While this is primarily a restaurant/bar I highly recommend it for groups. The service was as good as the food.

Good Belgian Fare

By Vahan C |

Overall not a bad place but the mussels were surprisingly small. Belgian beer on tap, which was a highlight. Ample servings.

Great Find!

By allisono686 |

Very good food and a good value in NYC - mussels were great and 2 lbs in a serving - bring your appetite.

Hidden gem

By Webbers90 |

Great food (macaroni and cheese--belgian style, mussels/frites, profiteroles) and service. The service was great. Wonderful atmosphere.

Great service

By James S |

We found this restaurant by accident but it has a great atmosphere and the staff are 100% committed to customer service - the food was great as well!

European style in Manhattan

By Brenda A |

The food is a mix between Belgian and American, but more European style. Onion soup was great as well as the meatballs. For beer lovers: they have a very nice selection of draft beers from Belgium. They also play European soccer.

Where the Belgians go to eat and drink!

By MGGambello |

I say this because I grew up in Belgium, and was just there celebrating a reunion with other expats who grew up in Brussels. Great beer, one heck of a charcuterie board and the kind of warm ambiance you would expect to find overseas. This is a can't miss for those with a passion for frites, moules and biere!

Nice Discovery!

By Mavi B |

We found this place by chance and were definitely happy with our choice. Good food, a little bit different from the offerings of the usual pubs. I particularly appreciated the mussels, which are offered with seven different types of seasonings. Being a Belgian pub, a good selection of beers is obviously available. The place is not very big, but still welcoming. We also appreciated the staff's patience with our group, as we had a two year old kid who was well looked after. We will definitely be back!

Pretty Flatiron Eatery

By Irma G |

Snall, pretty Belgian restaurant in the flatiron District. Delicious food with a Belgian twist. Wonderful service. The Caesar salad was tasty and very large, served in a big bowl. The generous portion of salmon was grilled to perfection with a crispy skin on one side. It was served with a wine reduction sauce. The coffee came in large supersized cups and was very tasty. My friend’s grilled chicken was very good and also a very big portion. The seafood appetizers were also excellent. There was a large selection of wines by the bottle or glass The tiramisu was enjoyed by all.

Party atmosphere and great Belgian food

By German B |

Very good choice for a fun night out. The music is loud, leading to a party-like atmosphere. The drinks are well-crafted, and the food is excellent. I recommend the steak frites (of course!), cooked to perfection, and the salmon roti, served in a red wine sauce with leek & potatoes. Finish the evening with profiteroles, and you'll leave very satisfied indeed!

Favorite NYC Spot..A must visit!

By Dingo363 |

Ever since my first visit last year I find myself keep coming back. BXL Zoute is hands down my favorite NYC spot. The food, service and staff are second to none. The cozy french bistro ambiance makes you feel right at home. The chicken caesar is killer.. The mussels are amazing! The beers are ridiculous.. love the Rochefort Trappist beer and the Malheur is sublime. Stop in and say hello to Amaury, Daniel, Klaas, Yves and .. Whether it's after work drinks, brunch, lunch or a late supper...you will not be disappointed!

A little piece of Belgium in NYC

By Foodilicious |

I was in nyc for about 3 weeks and missing my delicious Belgian food. So I decided to try out BXL-ZOUTE. I was very happy to find that Belgian « nonchalance «  and the fact that our waiter didn’t come every two seconds to our table to see if everything was ok. I think I almost sat myself down myself. All the menu was filled with Belgian classics and I was very happy to see that they stuck to the original dishes and didn’t try to make it more American. The shrimp krokketten were good but hardly had any shrimps in them :( Bouchée de la reine was very tasty and the carbonnade flamande was just like we have it back home. A large variety of Belgian beers to wash it all off :) I know it’s been there for quiet some time but why not put more Belgian decorations in it ? We have so much to be proud of and clients will that way travel a bit to Belgium.

A gem

By Marilyn A |

Delicious mussels and beer. A little noisy, from the bar, but manageable. We were going to Irish Rep theater and luckily found using google map.

Nice atmosphere, convenient location

By Debora T |

The food and service was very good. Staff was efficient and friendly. Just a bit loud, they could use to lose the tv at the bar.

Second visit, even better than the first.

By Duccy |

I'd popped in to BXL Zoute for brunch on a previous visit and was a bit disappointed that Carbonnade Flamande wasn't on the brunch menu so this visit I came for dinner. I was not disappointed this time! I love this place.....cozy, friendly, excellent food and service. BXL Zoute will be included in all my NYC trips from now on.

Two thumbs up!! Great food amazing atmosphere, loved it!!

By thecanucks2016 |

We went here for our anniversary and we loved it. Server was so friendly and had great recommendations for wine and food. We had the mussels and the chicken with applesauce and both were fantastic. Awesome bread came first then we had the baked goat cheese and we were too full for dessert but I'm sure it would have been awesome. Such a cute little place with a lively bar area a great vibe and even better food. We will come back for sure!!

If you love Belgium beer-GO!

By Emmasmominnj |

We visited NYC and I specifically searched for Belgium bars so we can indulge in these wonderful beers. We hit the jackpot with this awesome place! Not only do they have several of our favorites on tap-delirium, pirat, golden drake, and leffe, they have a wide range of bottles. Any Belgium of your desire, they have! We hit this place in between meals and only had their cheese plate and bread, but that paired wonderful with our beer choices. They have small flights too so you can try various ones! Definitely take a cab and try this one out. Staff is super friendly which is an added bonus!

For beer and food lovers

By bobg925 |

I knew the BXL on 51st St. from a former stay and decided to try the newer Zoute as it was closer located to our hotel. I celebrated my birthday that day and really surprised my family with Belgian beers and food. As we were 8, I booked on Open Table and everything was ready when arrived. It's a small but lovely place that reminds me of many small pubs in Brussels. The service was good, beers and mussels excellent! The fries were just as we know them from Belgium. The music might be a bit loud by moments when having a conversation but nothing really to complain about. I had again a good time at BXL and will return for sure next time when being back to NYC.

Belgian Class for a good price

By Danny D |

A great location close to Madison Square garden, and not just an average pub, This is heaven for every beer enthusiast and Beer-Food pairing lover. The have a vast selection of drafts and bottles but also a great restaurant with Belgian specialties, from Mussels (Moules) Bouchée à la Reine, Croque Monsieur and so on, for a very acceptable price. The expertise of Klaas and his staff comes for free

Very nice place

By Alain D |

When I was in NY at that time my soccer team AA Gent was playing against Wolfsburg for the Champions League so I had to find a place where I could watch the game. So we found this Belgian restaurant-bar-estaminet. Not only the beer was good but for all the atmosphere. If I had no dinner planed I stayed for sure to have dinner because the food smelled very good. I will come back with my team in Feb 2017!! Good to feel like coming home.

Great beer choices

By Jenifer C |

Pleased with our reception--we had reservations, but showed up 1 ½ hours early and were accommodated with good grace. The beer selection was great. The cheese and meat board was also good, though the cheese portions were on the small side of the typical board range. I had the carbonnades Flammandes, which was, sadly, unremarkable. My husband had the Belgian meatballs, which were definitely more interesting. I was disappointed in the fries (frites), the ubiquitous accompaniment, hoping for something more European, but my husband really enjoyed them. So, a mixed bag in terms of food, but worth a try.

Lunch in NYC

By Seaside66chris |

Passed by and stoped for lunch, I had meatballs and my wife had the goats cheese salad, both were excellent. Washed down with margaritas and D’Achouffe larger.

Cozy French Resto

By pestman |

We were looking for a place for lunch on a Sunday and stumbled upon this place on Google Maps. When we got there, we were pleasantly surprised at this place being cozy and not cramped or noisy. It was in fact very charming and very French. We ordered the Croque Madame and it was excellent. Definitely a great place for brunch.

Really good, authentic belgian food

By Julie V |

As we are from Belgium we wanted to visit a restaurant that served Belgian food. BXL Zoute was a really good choice! We got the carbonade flammande and the steak tartare. It was excellent! The Fries were fresh and so were the dishes. For dessert i ate the crème brulé, which was just like at home. Everything was really really good. The owner and staff were really friendly. If we visit NYC again, we will certainly visit BXL Zoute again.

moule frites is a specialty

By laxmigoddess12 |

Great location for a quick bite if seeing a show at the Metropolitan Room. Food is great. Busy so can be a bit loud. Good value. Mussels can be found in many different sauces. Creamy chicken is so tasty you'll want to lick the plate.

Great food, service, and atmosphere

By Patty C |

Very authentic vibe and decor, friendly and knowledgeable service, great beers and awesome food! The croque monsieur was amazing, and the Guldene Draak beer was delish!

Bad attention

By Javiera L |

Around 9:00 pm today, Thursday May 16, 2019, I went to dinner with my mom, a place recommended by some friends (MISTAKE). We were waited by JOHAN, the WORST service we have had in our visit to New York (thanks for that BXL ZOUTE). The man was rude, he was not interested in doing his job (which is very easy by the way). The food was OK but it is a pity that the service has ruined the night. You should train your employees better. It is not an attention that is expected from a restaurant in Manhattan. And JOHAN, THE RUDE GUY, told me in the distance: RELAAAX, and towards unpleasant gestures telling me to breathe and relax. What a fool. I await a response from you and sincerely hope that this JOHAN man relaxes in his place by him self. Best, Not Your Costumer Anymore.

Place to be if you miss Belgium a little bit :-)

BXL Zoute is a fantastic located stop near the Flatiron Building. Light fare or full entrees and great beers of course ! The 'moule frites' is a specialty.

Belgian? Hope your wallet is bulgin'

By JogNy |

Passed by this place and saw nice specials advertised, not expensive, so I came back a week later to try it. The place is pleasant enough, and has a large selection of Belgian beers. But expensive. Three of us managed to spend $48 on 6 beers alone (the waitress mistakenly brought a small when one of us asked for a large, but didn't charge us more), and the whole tab came to $170 with the tip. Most of the food was bland, not inspired. The Belgian meatballs were pretty good, but cheese croquettes, sirloin tip stew in Leffe Brown beer, Thai-style mussels? Barely a hint of flavor. This cuisine and French are known for subtlety, but this was just too delicate. At prices like this, I expect at least to be able to taste the food, if not remember it.

Belgium Beer on Tap

By CPM2000 |

read about this cafe in the NY Times...didn't disappoint! Wide range of Belgium beers on tap. Water glasses had Belgium soccer team photos on them. We sat outside and had a sandwich with our beers...lovely setting! Great place to relax!

Excellent Pub

By GiovanniMinaldo |

Incredible selection of world class Belgian beers and ales on tap, as well as some other beers from around the world (in bottle and on tap). Was there for lunch during work week. I had the salmon which was outstanding. My friend had the mussels, and they brought out a huge bowl, overflowing with mussels accompanied by great toasted bread, and wonderful french fries. The menu also includes burgers, pot pies, salads, stews, and other pub style food. I had the mesclun salad with house dressing and that was great too. At the end of the meal, we had coffee. I had a caffe latte, which was as good as any I've had in France, if not better. My friend had the macchiato, which was praised as well. You can eat at the bar, which is very commodious, or at the nice tables they have. The place is extremely clean, beautifully decorated, and the service was friendly and prompt. I will definitely be headed back here.

Local place that most tourists would walk right by

By deltahater |

The outside is probably by design so it does not attract too many tourists. I met a local friend there who loves craft beers. They have a nice beer selection and we had a plate of fries. the fries were awesome. We arrived at 4:30pm on a Sunday and it was fairly empty. By the time we left at around 7:30 it was packed, mainly with diners. The food looked really good and the guests really seemed to enjoy their meals. We had plans to eat Italian that night, otherwise we would have eaten there too. The service was distinctly European. Hint Hint. But that seems to work for most locals there and I had the impression that the Belgian owner is pretty stubborn about his decor/flair and menu so don't expect to find a Bud Light on the beer list.

Midweek early dinner

By DrPecs |

Not too crowded or rushed with attentive service for a couples get together. Belgian is a fine option for a night out. Wide selection of beer on tap, many new to us to try. Several mussel pot selections, all were tasty with ample portions. Hardly ever can order steak tartare, and if you love it, it was great. Coffee and pastry to end an enjoyable meal.

Nice plae for a meal

Nice place ! A lot of draft beers . Nice food with a good service. Big plates . A bit noisy but we will come back

Best breakfast ever!!!!

By varshaluthra |

This is an amazing place to have breakfast and Brunch and the only place I know where you can have all you can eat mussels in a choice of broths. Do not miss this place!

Great for Drinks, Definitely Plan on Going Back

By Jennifer R |

I stopped by on a Friday night with some friends visiting from out of town and we really enjoyed the drinks and the vibe. Good service. I plan on going back for the food sometime.

Fantastic Moules Frites

By Ellen L |

If you are yearning for some great mussels and fries, this is the place. The mussels in cream, bacon and onion were fantastic. Granted they were on the smaller side, but there were so many in the portion, that it was a challenge finishing the dish, but all 3 of us did. This may restaurant may go on record as having the best fries ever- each one was super crispy and went perfectly with the mussels. I know some TripAdvisor reviewers were less than thrilled with the service, but our service was attentive. Our apps off bitterballen and mushroom toast were great although given the portion size of the entrees, we could have easily skipped these offerings. Can’t wait for a return visit.

Accidental happiness

By borninthebronx |

We wanted to go to the sushi place two doors down but the wait was 45 minutes. Meanwhile BXL Zoute looked inviting. The host squeezed us into the bar where my old friends tried the excellent beers; the Chouffe was superb. Black bean soup among the best I have had. Salmon Roti, Beet Salad, Endive and Ham special, mussels: all excellent with fine atmosphere and superb very gracious service. Glad we found it and will return.

Super !

Very good restaurant. It was unpredictable to eat Belge in NYC, I was working next door and with my friends we have discovered this great place. Very good food, huge portions, nice staff and very affordable prices.

Cozy, comfortable escape

By BTrattler |

This is a Belgian Style simple but comfortable place to spend time with friends and enjoy a really good taste of Belgium. Lots of good draft beer, with mussels and French fries, or a small brunch menu. Staff is very friendly and you don't get rushed out the door. The best part is its not expensive.

Nice atmosphere and food

By Beaches1785 |

Went there on a business trip. Staff are very nice and they cooked my filet the way I love and it came out perfect for me. Nice atmosphere and would go back!

Refreshing (Intoxicating!) Beer on a Stiflingly Hot Day

By Crabbus |

Great selection of Belgian beers on tap and in bottles, a welcome relief to the Manhattan heatwave. Noisy but comfortable dining room and nice array of Belgian favorites, all satisfying and delicious. Lots of mussel choices, but lots of meatball, steak and chicken choices too. Boisterous crowd. Too many TV screens.

WOW food is Great

By Cmp1130 |

Ok this places a return to place. The staff is quick, and very friendly. Now let's get to the food, the portion size for the mussels are for two and take about good. Favors are so THailand. The Lamb burger is cooked to order and very fresh with all the Greek flavor so you would want. The Caesar salad is oversized and the drinks are on point.

Bistro atmosphere, all about the fries...

By trip_1963 |

If you want great french fries, this is the spot. Burgers are ok too. And the espresso was spot on. Otherwise, dried out chicken breast, jarred Caesar salad, white bread and a noisy environment make the place a (relatively) cheap-eats, neighborhood hang. I did not have the beer or mussels, both of which they seemed to specialize in. Wait staff is cheerful. Benches along the wall were a bit low compared to the facing chairs. Ok for sustenance, not fine dining.

WONDERFUL RESTAURANT

By nordica1950 |

BXL ZOUTE offers authentic Belgian moules et frites. There is an all you can eat mussel special every Sunday and Monday, which is a great value at $22. Recently I had a rack of lamb which was excellent. Can be a bit noisy later on; go early. Certainly a place I have eaten in several times, and plan to return.

Belgian gem in NY

By DCalexandre |

I'm a Belgian living in DC and was visiting NY for the weekend. I was in the mood for french/belgian food for lunch and found BXL Zoute online. It was a great surprise. The food was amazing: cheese croquettes, ham and endive rolls, mussels, etc. And for a very reasonable price. The service was impeccable and the setting was great. The beer list was amazing although I'm more of a wine drinker. The wine list was decent and honestly priced.

great little spot

By BruceWillisUES |

excellent food and beer options. The service is great and do not pass up the steak tartare. Can't really tell from the street but this place is a total gem. Affordable and cozy.

Awesome stop

By Dennis P |

BXL Zoute is a fantastic stop for light fare or full entrees. Great selection of beers and spirits, wonderful food and incredible service. Reasonable prices short walk to MSG and flat iron District.

Good Find

By marism |

Good service, great food and an excellent location. What more can you ask. The mussels were excellent. Will add this to my list of go to restaurants while in NYC.

Great Belgian Styled Restaurant

By Siklopse1 |

Stumbled across this place by accident and so glad we did. Having lived and worked in Belgium, the owners have the decor, ambiance and ‘feel’ spot on. Great food, great beer, miam.

Belgium brunch

By Peggy C |

We went to the BXL cafe by Times Square after the Matisse show at MOMA and before Into the Woods. Not much from the outside but the champagne brunch that awaits you is delicious. I had the Croquettes Hawaiian which was a special and it was terrific. I don't eat mussels but a few members of my family loves them here. I would definitely make a reservation since seating is limited and the crowd was standing and waiting.

We like this joint!

By Peter S |

BXL tends to be a bit noisy catering to a young crowd; they are nice to us middle-agers too! Food is always good and reliable. Nice beer menu, of course. There were 6 people, and all were content.

Comfort food with a fabulous welcome

By KiwiKirksontour |

OK Emilio was just delightful. This is such a lovely little spot with a great vibe. The food was great especially the shrimp and scallop starter. We just stumbled across BXL and ended up having a fantastic night. Service was friendly and attentive but most importantly incredibly welcoming. The gentleman from Philly (sorry we forgot your name) gave us spot on recommendations for the West Village. You will definitely leave this place smiling.

European Charm and Attitude

By Touria G |

This place is charming, has a good feel about it. The food is good, depending more on what you order. However, there is a special coldness about the people working here, whether at the bar or at the table. Nothing drastic, but a bit different from what is the norm in NYC.

A positive Belgian experience in lower Manhattan

By Bimporttraveller |

Belgians have long argued that French fries are a misnomer, claiming Belgium as the true home of the best fries. So here's an opportunity to test that claim, in a Flatiron district Manhattan restaurant that offers a fair degree of Belgian authenticity. The menu has a wide selection of dishes to be found in that country; but moules (mussels) in at least seven styles, fries and a wide range of beers define it. We chose the $22 prix fixe lunch and for our included drinks opted for the glass of house wine in preference to a small Stella or soft drink. That worked well with our choices of soup followed by moules frites and house salad followed by omelette of the day. also with frites. Adding a wine refill for one (the most expensive item on our check), a shared mousse au chocolat dessert, tax and tip, we spent $85 on a lunch for two which hit the spot as we revisited old haunts in that part of town for the first time in several decades. Service, largely by a Frenchman from Nice, was friendly and efficient. We sensed that more French than English was being spoken around the restaurant during our visit, which we took as positive endorsement

Don't let first appearances fool you

By Hewitty15 |

From the outside, it looks like another old neighborhood bar. Walking in, it does too. So we dumped a party of twelve on them including a couple of kids and these guys put on their "A" game. We get a really nice table in the back away from the bustle in front. Dedicated waiter. Superb beer selection, many Belgian on tap as well as bottles. Mussels, oh my the mussels, so many in the pot and so good. Frites like you would find in Bruge. Some uniquely European dishes including a sausage selection including morcilla (blood sausage) and all good. Something special for the picky eater little kid? Of course! We threw them a curve ball and they hit it into the stands.

BXL Zoute serves great belgian food and have a fantastic selection of Belgium beers (on tap or bottle). This is where the belgium community meet on a regular basis

Belgium beer!

Stopped here for a bite to eat early in the evening. No reservations but the staff was able to accommodate us with a wonderful table. Excellent food! The mussels were perfectly cooked and the selection of Belgium brews was very good.

Cool and intimate Belgian Restaurant

By SeeknParadise |

A very cool and intimate Belgian Restaurant in the heart of Chelsea neighborhood. Great service, food was scrumptious and all with a very reasonable price, especially by NYC standards. Moderate noise and the fries are very tasty, hmm hmm yummy. Would definitely visit again.

Great brunch, great service

By Carin L |

Tried BXL for the first time and on the occasion of my mother's birthday. When we arrived they warned us that they needed the seating area for a private party in about an hour, but would seat as at the bar if we wanted to linger longer. The set-up was very comfy nonetheless. Ordered off the Saturday brunch menu, but both of us had mussels and frites -- delicious! The bartender also made great recommendations for Belgian beers and let us sample a few so we could choose our favorites. Dessert (profiteroles) were just OK, but basically when I was expecting. Service was top notch, friendly, and very responsive. My mother happily said "I'm coming back here with or without you!", so it was clearly a birthday success. :)

Great Find!

By westeddy54 |

After a wedding dress fitting at Kleinfeld's, my daughter and I were looking for a nice lunch bistro. After consulting Yelp, my daughter steered us towards BXL Zoute. What a great find! It is a spacious welcoming restaurant with friendly staff and a great menu. I had the Moules Provencale & Frites which were delicious and plenty. My daughter had the French Onion soup and the Caesar Salad - again good portions and tasty! They have an extensive beer menu,a lunch special (called the Prix Fixe) for $16 and on Sundays & Mondays there is an All you Can Eat Mussels special. There is a delightful outdoor patio for dining in the warmer (less rainy) weather. And they do take out through Seamless and Delivery.com. Next visit to New York will include dining and drinking at BXL Zoute!

Good beer

By Tak11937 |

We stopped in for some Belgian beer and bitterballen. We really liked the feel of the place. You could almost feel like you were in Europe. The Belgian draft beer was great, the bitterballen was ok, and the service was fine. Some sort of weird staff or owner party with Champaign going on at the bar with employees partaking...

A little Belgium in NYC

By Joeri |

So nice to feel a bit at home. Choices of the best beers from Belgium and a wonderful Belgian meal to feel like home. I really don't like New York, but when I should visit it again.... THIS it the place to visit. Also the cosy atmosphere and nice talks between Europeans and New Yorkers make this place a hidden secret! Helemaal Hemiksem ;-)

Feel at home as a Belgian

By Luc C |

I did all 3 BXL restaurants in NY now. I will not rank them among themselves as they are pretty much all the same. Food is good and typical Belgian, but the choice of Belgian beers is why you would really want to come here. Excellent!
