My favorite lunch spot in NY

By skwilson |

My favorite lunch spot when shopping on Madison Avenue in New York. Stop by for wine, delicious mussels and perfect fries. The staff is French with very nice service.

Nice French food

By Laura T |

This restaurant was very nice. I had the endive salad and the tuna tartare which was delicious. We had a Caesar salad and the chicken wrap. The service was excellent. There weren’t many choices for the kids, but they were happy with salad and fries. Crime brûlée was great! It was nice and cool inside and they had a little patio outside.

Very enjoyable bistro dinner

By jamieg40 |

Had a very nice Friday evening dinner here. The maitre d' very courteously accommodated our request for an outdoor table. The room has a lively atmosphere and charming decor. Service was friendly and prompt. My country pate and chicken was excellent.

French bistro that checks all the boxes...

By WillTell1307 |

One has to be somewhat sanguine when thinking about these things: just because I love something, doesn't mean you will. We all have different tastes and, of course, the world is a better place for it. OK, I love French food. I lived in Geneva for a few years, went to grad school in Paris, and go to France at least once a year, usually twice. If I were domed to eat one style of food for the rest of my life... you get what I'm saying. Let me be clear, though: I'm not big on frou-frou. I want brasserie/bistro food with a good table wine: steak-frites, steak au poivre, frisee au lardons, coq au vin, poulet roti... I started going to LC, must be 15-20 years ago. It's seen me through life as a single man to a middle-aged father of an 8 and a 6 year old. Every time I leave the place it's with a smile on my face. It's not particularly sceney although but there's a fair amount of Euros that give it a certain "je ne sais quoi." Music is generally what the French call "lounge"; bit of a beat but not too loud. And the atmosphere is what I'd called homey, not flashy or brash. Service is excellent, by nice, young continentals who are happy to be in NY living an adventure. And the food... again, we all have different tastes. But in my book it simply never disappoints. The classics are all there and they're all done exceedingly well. Hey--I love Benoit, and Cafe Lux, and Le Bilboquet, and all the Boulud restaurants. But Le Charlot? Comme je t'aime! De tout mon coeur, de tout mon estomac!

Absolutely delicious food, good ingredients well seasoned and well prepared. Every dish was outstanding, and all at reasonable prices.

Worst Place in New York

By Travel_1975 |

This is one of the worst restaurants I have been to. As soon as you enter inside you are greeted by a snotty Frenchman. I hate stereotypes, but this was it. The staff were just as rude. The food was horrible. I think this is the worst place to dine in in New York city.

Good but not more

By laurent s |

We stopped there on our way to Whitney museum with a two friends. We could seat outside which was pleasant on a sunny Saturday. 3 of us took the gazpacho with different opinion. My wife liked it but our friends found it too blind and not blended enough. I had a steak tartare which was properly seasoned and at the standards of Paris brasseries but the french fries were too salty. I was thirsty the whole afternoon. Ultimately a bit disappointed and the bill was also salty! We won't go back there. We'll go to Orsay at the next block instead.

Traditional French Bistro

By GGPtrs |

The goose liver terrine was excellent as were the mussels in a sauce with fennel and probably flavored with Pernod. The roast chicken, whilst a good flavor was a little overcooked but the sauce was good as were the mashed potatoes.

Small restaurant, good food

By EnjoyTraveling64 |

This restaurant is small and when we went-mid afternoon it was not too crowded. The tables are close together. It is called a French bistro. The menu was interesting in that there was curry, cajun mahi mahi, veal scallopini, steak, chicken and salads. I had the lobster salad that had pineapple, arugula, and grapefruit. It was pretty good. I wouldn't go out of my way to go back but if you are in the neighborhood, it's a good choice.

Ladies who lunch, brunch

By Lisaandtoni |

It’s always an interesting scene at this cramped, noisy, little French bistro. It’s great for people watching, and the food is pretty good. The notable exception is the French onion soup, which is redolent of lukewarm dishwater. Why can’t they get that right? Note: It’s always sweet to see a chic jolie femme lunching with her little chien tucked in beside her.

Onion soup

By Judy A |

We go to Le Charlot whenever we're in the neighborhood. One dish we ALWAYS get is their French onion soup. Having been to Paris a few times, we have found their soup to be better than most places in Paris. After that the moules with the best French fries are always good. The appetizers are always fresh and the salads crisp and tasty. There are hot and cold entrees that are prepared to order. We have always found the staff to be friendly and helpful. We highly recommend this restaurant.

A little treasure off Madison Avenue

By Elaine S |

We were looking for lunch on a bright, chilly day before heading off to JFK to return home. We looked around the corner and there were tables on the sidewalk; we pushed the door open and found a fairly full room pulsating with conversation and general activity; we opted for outside and were seated immediately (we were joined at the other 4 or 5 tables out there within a few minutes). In a little while heaters were on overhead. We shared a delicious hot leek and potato soup; I got the best salad ever, with pear and walnuts; my partner enjoyed his foie gras and his crab cake. We regretfully decided against dessert, but the decaf coffee actually was hot and tasted like coffee.

Very decent

Nice French bistrot in New York ... food is pretty good and ambiance is cosy and warm. Had a good steak with pepper saus

My favorite French place in NYC

By lostnyctraveler |

This is intimate and cozy with delicious food that is light and authentic! Not the typical loud touristy place but one that is appreciated by the finer New Yorkers.

Great Food and worth the wait

By PrpleAce |

Stumbled on to this establishment by chance. The food was amazing! Highlights include their Tuna Tartare and Steak Tartare -- Kind felt in a raw mood this day. The staff is very pleasant but the delivery service was a bit slow but worth the wait.

Good food, not the greatest service, too much attitude

By Dennis87 |

great mussels, very good wine list, nice room. Service a little snotty. Actually, more than a little. Guess we were not their usual high end wealthy NYC clients.....

Charming French off Madison Avenue

By michaelafreedman |

We often dine here for lunch when we do a day of shopping on the upper east side. The owner is always around speaking French and watching over the place. The food is divine. This time I had a special of grilled shrimp and a papaya, tomato salad that was outstanding and , of course the bread is to die for. You can sit outside or just inside but still more or less on the street. A great break from shopping!

moules frites fix

By Tod T |

I've lunched here a few times, it's just an average french bistro, nothing special I needed a quick lunch break i was on the fly for business on the UES. A moules frites fix sounded great.... Service was attentive, mules where plentiful+prepared very well However the frites where limp & greasy!!!! If I go back again , i'd specify the doneness at the order

Great french bistro

By arh0070 |

Came in on a rainy day after a visit to the Fricke. Got a table right away .Small restaurant ,tables close together ,french staff ,great ambience and people watching. We both had french onion soup.Fantastic ,about the best I have ever had ,came with perfect french bread .I followed with another appetizer, the pate and my wife had a Greek salad .Everything great .Followed by coffee which was also very good .Just had water .Cost about 80$ for two ,to be expected in this high end part of Manhattan .

Good French Food.

By NevskyNY |

Good French food. A small space with a lot of energy. Very good chicken. Pleasant service. Good bread too. Very pleasant.

Le Charlot NY

By Panos H |

There are some important differences between little restaurants in France and little French restaurants in NY. The basic is pricing. The restaurant experience was enjoyable, we received the food we wanted well prepared and by really polite waiter. But no matter how good the ambience was 200$ for two onion soups and three salats is a bit too much.

A real treat

By Lars U |

A busy small restaurant with family touch offering excellent food and wine. We started off with paté and different salads including a very tasty crab salad. As main courses we went on with mussels, halibut and pepper steaks. Finally we shared a chocolate mousse as well as a creme brulée. Everything perfect - a real treat for all of us!

Eat where the French eat

By Kadie123 |

Little bit of Paris in Manhattan. Had lunch on sidewalk, surrounded on both sides by ex-pats. Great food, great winelist, great location near museums.

Nice French bistro

By Worldwatcher |

We were wandering down from the Guggenheim on the Upper East Side when we came upon this little piece of Provence. Crowded and not too comfortable, we still enjoyed a pleasant leisurely lunch. We had the crab and avocado salad followed by chocolate mousse. All in all a very nice afternoon interlude. Prices are reasonable except for the $13 we were charged for a bottle of sparkling water.

Warranted a trip back 5 years later, just as good!

By dralla2 |

On a romantic weekend in NYC Le Charlot was recommended to us by a salesman at Cartier on the nearby corner. It was December, blustery cold and we were happy for someplace nearby to warm our bones and get a bite to eat. Fantastic. Lovely little French bistro as you'd find anywhere in Paris. Small, intimate, great menu. On a recent romantic weekend getaway in NYC we looked it up, still there! Is it cheap? No, nothing in NYC is cheap. But is it a great little neighborhood place that you can fantasize about visiting regularly if YOU lived on the upper east side? Absolument!

Such a nice bistro

By F.L |

Nice friendly service, the owner is always there and look after you, great sunny terrace, very deep wine list with an accent on French wines. Order a bottle of rosé, a salade Nicoise, and let yourself be pampered by the staff, all eager to please.

We loved it!

By busybusymomof4 |

Decided to stop here for lunch after church, and we are glad we did. We sat outside on a beautiful day. Our service was great. The food was amazing! I had the egg white omelet with asparagus and tomato. My daughter had the burger and loved it. My friend had the chicken wrap and enjoyed it. Her daughter loved the goat cheese omelet.

Disappointing

By Abbottwright |

Food ok-ish. Staff and manager attitudes terrible. Walk another block, find somewhere nicer for the money.

A little bit of Paris in New York

By Elliot J |

A small, cozy typically French bistro -- seeming plucked from a side street in Paris. Waiters are friendly and efficient, the food generally good and the atmosphere very pleasant. My salad of endive, Roquefort and pears was excellent. Main courses of salmon (cooked perfectly), mussels with frites (excellent) and tiger shrimp (large size, cooked perfectly, perhaps a bit skimpy in the portion) were all quite acceptable. Prices reflect NYC. Total for drinks, appetizer, entree, tax, tip (no desserts) was about $80pp. I will definitely return to this place -- a terrific neighborhood find.

A Long-Lived NYC Fixture. Make it a destination.

By Jim D |

This place is a long-lived NY restaurant for good reason. A traditional French Cafe/Bistro with wonderful salads, a nice assortment of dishes, and best of all- outdoor seating in a part of the city where you just can't find that kind of space. The help fits the traditional French mold- they are too important or pretty to be bothered with your trivial requests. It's okay though- I just think of it as an authentic French experience =) Enjoy.

Pleasant surprise

By Lynn R |

I wanted a new place to celebrate my birthday. The staff was welcoming. The duck rolls apetizer was excellent, as was the steak au poivre. The staff was attentive but not overly so. The decor was welcoming. It all made for a very pleasant evening.

We felt like we were on vacation!

By LornaRidgewood_NJ |

My dearest friend and I fell upon this lovely cafe by accident after visiting a nearby doctor. It was a beautiful day and we sat at a table for two under an awning near the sidewalk. Our beautiful and friendly waitress was from Paris which added even more authenticity to this charming spot. Since we weren't starving we asked to please share an appetizer (hearts of palm and avocado) and main entree ( poached salmon, green mayonnaise, tabouli, greens). They graciously served us half portions on separate plates that were actually quite generous. The food was not only presented magnificently, but tasted so fresh and was perfectly prepared. The service was extremely attentive and courteous. Though there was a nominal plate sharing charge of $5 we felt that the prices were fair for the quality/quantity of food and special ambience of this restaurant. We cannot wait to return to sample some new choices from an extensive and interesting menu.

OK if you live in the neighborhood

By Magenta33 |

An obvious choice if you live on the Upper East Side, good for Sunday lunch. However, keep in mind the place is small and gets packed. There are a few tables outside if you are really feeling cramped or cannot stand the noise. The quality of the food is ok, but not great. I had the moules fritte, which was fine. The glass I drank out of was broken, so I told the waiter but I did not get an apology from management, nor did they "treat" us to something to compensate, as would be expected. It is a little pricey, but then again, the prices are acceptable considering the swanky neighborhood.

Fantastic

By Norman |

This upper east side bistrot is nice and the food is fantastic, very good choice for couples and friends, once a month I visit this place.

Terrible Restaurant

By WRJM52 |

Food and service were very subpar. Service was slow and food was not well prepared. They ran out of several dishes on their menu. Servers were disorganized and poor at their job. One member of our party never got her meal.

Attitude

By HSBrown |

I called for a reservation and was told to come by 6:30 and did. When we arrived the man looked at us with plenty if empty seats and told us they we're all booked. Bad attitude. Never going back. With all these bad reviews you'd think these jackasses would change!

Intimate but noisy

By CGNY26 |

First time we have eaten at le Charlot. Small French bistro. Good service but very noisy. Classic French food nothing out of the ordinary but well presented and served. We went in the evening, lunch may be quieter. Expensive wine list. Upper East priced food.

Perfect spot for eating if you are visiting the Frick

By adspharm |

A French bistro, where you are greeted in French and where several French-speaking guests attended while we were there. The food is well presented and cooked in the French style. The fish in particular was very good. Service was good, even though the restaurant got very full indeed. Arrive soon after opening time for lunch if you want to get a table. Recommended.

Good food but very crowded

By Liz0815 |

I guess some people might consider this restaurant "intimate," but we felt like we were packed like sardines in a can. My salad nicoise was excellent, and my husband declared his caesar salad was the best he'd ever had. I was somewhat surpised by the note at the bottom of the menu stating that there was a minimum $23.00 charge per person until I noticed that each of our salads actually cost $23.00!! This is a good restaurant for the very wealthy, not so much for us middle class Philadelphians! Live and learn, as the saying goes.

Excellent food & a great location

By Antiono Gastromio |

We were walking the streets to the east of Central Park looking for somewhere to eat a quick lunch when we stumbled across Le Charlot. Even though it was a cool February day we happily sat outside with our toddler in the stroller and enjoyed a pavement lunch (under a heater) in a typical French style. The menu was not huge which is a good thing, especially at lunch, so we had mango chicken curry and steak au poivre. Both dishes were very well cooked and were extremely tasty. The meal was topped off with a couple of glasses of red wine and a creme brulee to complete the authentic French lunch experience. The location was very pleasant, situated on a quiet side street within a fairly affluent and trendy neighbourhood so the traffic noise was very low and there were plenty of interesting passers by to look at and wonder how the other half live! The service could have been a bit quicker. Us and one other person were the only customers seated outside and it felt as though the staff could have attended to us quicker than they did but this didn't spoil the experience at all as we were in no rush to be on our way. I would definitely recommend this place. https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g60763-d534194-r880693440-Le_Charlot-New_York_City_New_York.html#

Average food. Bad service

By lguerra2018 |

The quality of the food was average. Too expensive for the flavors, presentation and quantity of the dishes. The worst part was the attitude of the guy with white shirt which was acting as a host. When i asked about a place to park the scooters he told me “that’s not my problem”. It’s incredible how a customer can receive that type of answer in a place like this. The other waiters “in black” were in contrast really helpful. Bad experience. Will not come back

small salade and eggs bendict $94.00

By robertsF942IC |

Not much to report here. A small salad and eggs benedict cost $94. What a bargain. That was Sunday Brunch. God forbid what a coq au vin and toast would add up to. Welcome to Paris in Manhatten.

Great French restaurant tucked into 69th Street!

By NYMertzy |

We found this spot by accident. Waited at what we thought was the hostess area outside for about 5 mins but no one greeted us. Went inside and were seated. The mussels were terrific, tasty in a mariniere white wine and leeks. Great decor and pleasant atmosphere. Kid friendly! Tight space though.

Delicious, casual and yet elegant

By PAHKI |

My husband and I LOVED the restaurant, Le Charlot, where we dined after visiting the Metropolitan Museum. We wandered back and forth on the numbered blocks between 5th and Park Aves. We ran across a film crew, enjoyed the architecture and stumbled into such a delicious bistro . The lunch crowd appeared to be regulars, young women sans children and many French friends popping in to visit or eat with the welcoming owner and charming staff. They were not at all rude or rushed although the tiny place was full. The onion soup was sweet and hearty and my duck confit with pommes and frissee was stupendous. The meal, wine and ambiance made us feel as though we had really enjoyed a New York day on our short visit. It was a perfect respit after walking through Central Park & the museum. We will return to Le Charlot at 19 E 69th St.

Upper east side Jem

By hockeyeh |

Small and charming it’s French but normal..hard get a bad meal in New York as it’s so competitive. close seating and that’s what nyc is about. You meet people and chat. A little noisy but great vibe excellent service and very professional. I’d recommend this as must visit if you’re in the neighborhood.

Parisian Chic

By Commci |

If you love the chic craziness of Parisian cafe society, you'll fit right into Le Charlot. The room is crowded, busy, buoyant, and very noisy... even in beautiful weather when the French doors are folded back and window walls are wide open (Allowing, unfortunately, for the occasional cigar smoker on the sidewalk to stink up the whole room). The menu is diverse, richly French (though they do have a couple of outstanding New Zealand sauvignon blancs on the monster wine list), and richly flavored. The mussels, in whatever variation you choose them, are very highly recommended. The salads were bright and fresh. The desserts we had were also delicious. The prices are moderately high, by Manhattan standards, but we found the total experience worth the price.

Very French, Very Busy, Very Noisy, Very Fun

By Martin M |

We were at Le Charlot after what can be described as a long day. This is a long standing small French UES restaurant that knows how to serve good food, in a charged atmosphere. Portions are surprisingly large and very good, service is friendly, a nice wine list and a really fun atmosphere. The only offset is the noise, but no one seemed to care.

This family run restaurant keeps Consistent quality of food and service throughout the years. It is a must go

By Aldo M |

We have been coming to this restaurant for over 20 years. They keep up with the good quality and excellent and friendly service. Never in 20 years we had a complain or a disappointment You’ll love it. It is a a must go We Recommend the steak tartare and the classic beef a la poivre All the best

Marvelous, Cozy, Neighborhood Restaurant

By David S |

Le Charlot is a marvelous Upper Eastside neighborhood find. We have eaten lunch twice. Tasty and ample. The egg rolls are very good. Very tasty Greek Salad with surprisingly good tomatoes for December. The Mussels are excellent; such a large dish you may wish to share. The room is small and the tables numerous. Obviously, many locals eat here.

Tiny and Wonderful

By Harbourview482 |

Love this little restaurant... it is charming, inviting and elegant. Visiting always makes me feel like I have returned to Paris for an afternoon get away. My sister and I enjoyed a lovely lunch and a glass of wine after a morning of shopping. The environment is small with tables fairly close together, but somehow it works well and they've organized the space to maximize seating. We enjoyed a fabulous crab and avocado salad that was delicious. We then shared a bowl of Thai flavored mussels with frites. Delish! This spot is a little treasure and I try to visit each time I am in New York. Many of the customers are local patrons that dine in style. It is almost as fun to people watch as it is to savor your meal.

Delicious French Bistro

By Emily M |

My family and I had an amazing lunch here with favorites being the curried chicken, which was a mouth watering creamy curry with perfect rice and a delightful mango chutney. I think the best French curry I've ever had. The Classic Steak Au Poivre was also incredible. Wonderful cut of tender meat in a spectacular sauce with delicate fries served next to it. Looking forward to going back next week! We paired the meal with a nice bottle of the house Chardonnay. Service was very good.

It was O.K.

By Yuri K |

My food was O.K. nothing special. My partner didn't care his food much. He said that he would not go back. Because my other friends chose this place, I went along. I don't like to write non 5-stars review but I just did.

Good food but EXTORTIONATE water!!!

By Malcolm C |

The food was very good, but $13 for a small bottle of water (2 glasses) was a complete ripoff. Beware!!

Highly recommended quaint and great food

By nimo5 |

The food is really quite good and the atmosphere charming. Small but the food is very regular, in other words it is always good. The service is usually pretty good as well; I do recommend this place although it is filled with a lot of regulars who keep returning very frequently!

French Family Fare Near the Frick

By John Tepper M |

If you walked into Le Charlot on impulse you might be puzzled. It has the atmosphere of a family restaurant in Lyons. The name - "little Charlie" - could refer to a deceased Hawaiian painter-illustrator but the understated bowler hat gives away that it is named for Charlie Chaplin. The informal service does not detract from the fine French food.

Excellent food

By Bichomundi |

Like many of the restaurants in the area, service is not Le Charlot's forte, but the food is spectacular. Great option for lunch or dinner in the Upper East side. Small place, but great atmosphere. Not cheap.

Mediocre food and an arbitrary seating time limit

By JAK922 |

The food at this overpriced French restaurant is mediocre at best. The brunch omelette was no better than what a typical New York diner serves at half the price. But the main reason for this one star review is Le Charlot's total lack of class when it turned what should have been a leisurely Easter Sunday brunch into a rushed ending. With no mention of a seating time limit on its website or when the reservation was made and confirmed, or even when we were first seated, less than two hours after being seated the manager rushed us out before we were finished. He claimed that the table was already reserved for someone else. Other restaurants that have time limits for dining provide advance notice so that a diner can decide whether to eat there or elsewhere and, if the diner chooses to eat under the time limit condition set by the restaurant, to pace oneself accordingly. But not Le Charlot. There are many other superior French restaurants in New York City that do not treat their customers so rudely. But not Le Charlot.

Lunch

By Necmeddin K |

Everything delicious. Outdoor sitting. Terrine de campagne first class. Did not have space for steak tartare which was extra ordinnaire. My sister had a Salade Niçoise which had maybe half kilo of tuna fish on. Immaculate service with our lovely bilingual french young lady. Highly recommended if you are at Madison Avenue.

Great food but NO respect at all!

By Grazi D |

Very sad to share that this French restaurant that was such a great discovery with a dear friend yeeeears ago this Dec 31st 2017 has treated me and other friends so badly. Just because we were paying the maximum gratuity with some coins, we were told by the owner or manager in a very loud voice: "Are you playing monopoly? Because we do not play it here. So, take your coins with you because here we do not take it." Yes, this was what We got from Le Charlot after more than 6 years visiting NY and always eating at least one meal there. I do not know what irritates me the most: the total lack of respect that we got (when we least expected, after a good lunch and not at all prepared to get such an offense) or the fact that this is illegal (this restaurant is in the US and does not take US$ coins?????). Shame on you Le Charlot!

Good enough

By George |

I'm a sucker for a sidewalk cafe, so I enjoy this place when I'm shopping in the area. The food isn't groundbreaking, but its good (especially the chicken salad) and the service is usually on top of things.

Brunch debacle

By Sunzhine |

This place should not call themselves French, it is just not fresh or tasty. Overpriced, poor service, food lacks quality in ingredients and preparation. There are so many other better options!

Best mussels!

Best mussels!

So So

By FarAway490596 |

Charming space, mediocre food, poor value : i had the house salad ( to cold , contains nothing exciting), halibut fish (overcooked, served not warm enough). Service good but rushed.

High prices - Blah service - average food

By JCLi |

The female waitress had a very blasé attitude about her ... didn't care if we were there on the verge of we were annoying her by being there. And darn if she didn't know what the word "smile" means. The male waiter that took over the second half of our meal was nicer and more attentive. Ordered: 1. Foie Gras Truffle Fait Maison ($25) which was actually a good size slab but would have been better seared instead of served refrigerator cold. 2. Carpaccio Of Filet Mignon ($19) which was actually quite good. 3. Halibut ($32) which must have sat under the heat lamp too long as it was dry and tough. We gave it a try but can't recommend that anyone else does.

Good late night, typical French bistro food

By tyhalpin |

I have been here a few times, usually late night when staying nearby. The food is solid...typical of a French bistro and well prepared. Service can be hot and cold, but I think that's how the French do it sometimes. It is a good option if you're just hungry after a long day in the city.

Best mussels and steak frites

By Sussie33 |

I couldn't decide between the Mussels in Lemongrass and white wine, the steak frites or the Cajun chicken - so we ordered all three dishes and they were delicious! the service is fun and the restaurant has an excellent vibe. Very European. Great service. Indoor and outdoor which is fabulous on a beautiful day.

Great little authentic French place on the Upper East Side

By GN1 |

Le Charlot is a great little place; both for the food and the people watching. Went on a warm, sunny Spring afternoon and grabbed a table outside. Close together as is the New York way. Food was good. Moules et frites all round which were delicious. Not the cheapest but then you wouldn't expect it to be in this part of New York. All round would recommend.

Lovely outdoor dining

By CrazyAboutAcadia |

The two of us had a lovely time sitting outdoors at this café on a warm May afternoon. We were asked if we wanted lunch, though the time was 6 pm. We ordered four items totaling about $100 including gratuity: moules mariniere (generous serving), gazpacho, glass of red wine, and glass of white wine. Friendly, good service. I think the only thing that makes it a bit different from Paris is that just one of the chairs faced out, for people watching; in Paris, I think the idea is to have all customers face away from the cafe and give everyone a chance to watch the world go by. :)

OK for lunch, near the Frick

By Copasetick |

This bistro is cozy, friendly, popular, noisy. I had to speak loudly to my companion who had trouble hearing through the noise. As we and the neighboring table were leaving, the man commented on what we were discussing at our table. I was lucky that they were Belgian and I did not say anything derogatory about Belgians. The mussels I ordered had a nice sauce, but the mussels were very small. Can't the chef open one in the batch prior to cooking and serving? I should have sent them back. Clearly, if I go again, I will not order mussels. My companion had an ordinary salad with pieces of grilled chicken. The house French sauvignon blanc was excellent.

Nice Bistro

By Jonathan C |

The food at Le charlot is very good, the Mahi Mahi or the steak are ones of the best dishes i had. the location upper east side made this small restaurant a special place

standard bistro fare, cheap for the neighborhood, noisy, crowded

By Weyden |

Well, my title says it all. It is of course pretty expensive for most neighborhoods, but I suspect it is cheap for Madison & 69th (it is on 69th, just off Madison). But Moules Frites (I had the Thai sauce, quite good) are about $23. Glass of wine $15 (no Sancerre by the glass -- only ordinary varietals). My wife had a very good lobster salad ($27). So we were exactly $100 before tip. The place is really crowded and cramped -- I was seated next to a traffic area and my chair was continually bumped by wait-staff and others (they had to, there was no room to move). The density also meant that the place was *very* noisy -- you had to lean across the table to hear. The table next to us had dubious service: they received a second order of their endive salad, rather than their entrees.

Good French bistro

By Dapper1 |

We arrived at 12:15 and it was empty. It was a charming dining room so we sat and ordered. Very soon it started to fill up with a very upscale crowd. Our food was delicious. The roasted chicken is excellent. Adequate service. We will definitely return.

OK BUT NOTHING SPECIAL

By OpulentCritiques |

We were walking by and just walked in and got a nice table outside later on out filled up considering it was monday not bad at all, clients mostly New Yorkers, food wise nothing special but quite friendly service overall its OK.

Lively and delicious

By Daisy |

This tiny lunch spot was recommended to us by the folks at the Frick Museum since it’s so close by, and it was perfectly enjoyable. Endive salad and onion soup were both excellent, and my husband loved the mussels.

Great Bistro

By Maninasuitcase_10 |

My wife and I stumbled upon Le Charlot while walking up Madison. The restaurant was starting to get busy and it looked like a known destination for the locals so we decided to have dinner there. We loved everything about Le Charlot, from the efficient service to the quality of the the food (the mussels were lovely and the French Fries... perhaps the best I've had in a long long time). A true upscale New York Bistro worthy of repeat visits and well worth every penny of what was a reasonable tab for two people. Highly recommend it.

Fun and delicious!

By End412 |

This tiny little gem is perfect for dinner after spending time at the Metropolitan Museum or before a concert at Lincoln Center. Our meals have been delicious every time. While the space is cramped and you may need to say excuse me five or six times on your way to the rest rooms, the people watching is a terrific bonus.

Unexpected pleasure

We came upon Le Charlot by accident but what a fabulous lunch we had. The mussels were fabulous and the wine list unpretentious.

Fancy eurotrashy people with tobacco sticks drooping out of their mouths leer as you walk by this place. no thanks.

Crowded, Noisy, Expensive, Very UES and Excellent

By PrinceConsort |

This a small, bustling, charming and lively place. It clearly attracts people from the neighborhood. We went without a reservation on a Thursday evening and while the restaurant was almost full, we got a table immediately. The noise level was very high, but that's what you get these days with a popular, small restaurant. The food is fairly typical bistro food, prepared to a high level. I had a frisee salad and duck magret, two bistro standards, and my wife had two salads. Everything was very well done. The service was excellent...very attentive but not at all intrusive. It is expensive...starters at $17-18, mains at $35+, wine by the glass at $17-18, but I have had much more expensive meals at much worse restaurants. This is a very good version of a french bistro. Everyone seemed to be having a good time, including us. We will certainly go back the next time we are in the neighborhood. My only complaint is that they only offered two beers...a Kronenbourg 1664 and an Amstel light. It would have been nice to start my meal with a beer with some character...France actually has some...but I survived.

Good Neighbourhood Eatery

By Klaus E |

They cram a lot of tables I to this French restaurant and a table for two you have problems placing plates, glasses and bottles at the same time! My wife and I shared the Ceviche of shrimp and scallop, the Onion Soup and then each had Steak and Frite. The food was excellent and they had a nice Pinot Noir by the glass. Service friendly and timely.

Cozy, romantic, quintessentially French!

By ShoboM |

This is a fun little restaurant on the upper east side. It's a great place for lunch or dinner and close to the Met and the Frick. The mussels are an absolute MUST - delicious and fresh. The atmosphere is fun and lively. This is always our first stop on every trip to NYC. During this trip we went twice and had the mussels both times. We also had the halibut (prepared to perfection), the lamb, the tiger shrimp, and the pate. All of these dishes were delicious.

An Upper East Classic for a reason

By Papablito |

Been visiting this restaurant since 2001 on a regular basis as it combines very nice attributes: ideal location, great food, friendly service, cosy, nice scene, wonderful wines. Make sure to stop by when nearby shopping at Madison, going to the Met or enjoying Central Park. You will surely return

Solo dinner

By JHPL |

Really lively and friendly atmosphere. Professional and really nice service. Good traditional French food, in generous portions.

quick fix for late lunch

By Fabrice Vitali |

Simple bistro french food should be easy but this place seems like it is more of an amateur restaurant . Not cheap and really not worth waiting time and money there

Great Sunday Brunch

By roobrie |

Nice place to have a Parisian brunch on the East side. Excellent french fries. Fresh sauce on the eggs Benedict cooked just right. Good Bordeaux wine. Cappuccino was great. And all the services with smiles. What's not to like?

Chic bistro, good food, spotty service, always crowded

By Lisaandtoni |

Only ever been there for lunch. It draws a lively, chic crowd with good classic French bistro fare and a cozy, if crowded, room. Service can be spotty when they are busy. Food better than average with one exception: the onion soup is a horror: bland, thin, flavorless and seemingly without onions, it is drowned in globs of tasteless, stringy cheese. Come on guys, you can do better than that!

Overpriced. Average. Pretty authentic.

By burnsinny |

Definitely Overpriced for what you get/what you're paying for. Food was pretty average. Authentic Parisienne (including a little pretentiousness). Place was packed on a Tuesday night. 'Out of the way', IF you're looking for that.

A Must Visit

By Madronaguy |

Just walking up Madison on a hot morning on our way to the Frick, we spotted this place. We're so glad we did. A find-dining,tablecloth spot - outstanding cuisine.

Exceptional in every way.

By Mitchell B |

We just had a family trip that centered around a large memorial for our late father. We had thought of hiring a catering company, or renting out an event space but were having trouble finding some place that felt right for us; we wanted somewhere intimate and authentically NYC, with some honest personality. On a whim, and because it was around the corner from where we held our memorial, my sister inquired about whether Le Charlot might be available to rent out for the night. Great work by my sister!!! From the get-go, the entire staff here took us under their wing, and the evening was FLAWLESS. We had passed hors d'oeuvres, amazing perfect cocktails, and they somehow managed to serve over 50 people a sit-down dinner that had four choices of entree. One of my table-mates exclaimed that his dish was among "the best lamb chops I have ever eaten". I felt the same about my filet. Empty plates all around!! The staff could not have been more caring about our needs, and our desire to throw a dinner that elegant, yet also down-to-earth and welcoming. They exceeded our expectations, to put it mildly. All of us in my family now look forward to returning on a "normal" night to enjoy our new favorite restaurant in Manhattan. Thank you Le Charlot for making our dream evening come true.

This restaurant was not on

By NomadVagabond66 |

This restaurant was not on our radar but a chance meeting with a high profile political figure led to his recommendation of this restaurant. We felt safe taking his word on it and knew he would not lead us wrong. We were not disappointed! Service was attentive and food was divine. It was a lovely meal ending a memorable visit to the city.

Worst service ever!

By johannasheehy |

This restaurant was on a list of convenient places to eat given to me by The Frick Museum. The food was good, however, the service was appalling. After delivering the food, we were totally ignored. When we finally caught the waiter's attention (and this is an extremely small restaurant) I asked for a refill on my glass of iced tea. He left the table and in a while another employee came over to announce that they did not have any more iced tea. We asked for water and after an unbelievable wait, the water was delivered. Another long wait for the check.

Bad Experience

By truth10199 |

So I was on vacation in New York city and I had my brother and mother with me and because they recognized that my mother is international I guess from her dress, we were told that the restaurant was full and fully reserved although there was many empty tables!! , this is the first time such a thing happened to me in the united states and I’ve been living in the US for eleven years and because of my job as a university professor I travel frequently to different parts of the country for conferences and all across Europe and that never happened to me before!!, Le Charlot owners and staff SHAME ON YOU for such a racist and discriminatory behavior, I don’t believe that this restaurant represent the spirit of New York, And I’m sure that New Yorkers and Tourists don’t want to condone such racist behavior !!!

Off day on the mussels?

By belgianannie |

After Frick museum visit, we went for lunch at Le Charlot. We were early so we had a table, but it filled up very quickly. Atmosphere is cozy, bistro French and loud. Seemed like a lot of customers were known by the waiters. I had the mussels marinieres with frites and hubbie the filet prepare. He liked his lunch but my mussels were tiny, tasteless and I was very disappointed. Fortunately the frites were very good and the musselbroth was too. If they knew the mussels were not good that day, they should not have served them. Service was quick and friendly.

Madison Hot Spot

By AJAX6965 |

Le Charlotte was jammed for Sunday lunch with the sidewalk tables filled first. Slow service as a result. Inside tables jammed together, so no semblance of privacy. Very good food when it arrived and huge portions. We split the steak and had left overs. Excellent frites. Huge profiteroles with tons of chocolate sauce.

Don't order a glass of the "Sancerre"...

By InLondonAgain |

...because they don't sell Sancerre by the glass. However, the French manager will sell you a glass of mediocre sauvignon blanc and tell you it is Sancerre. This happened to my wife and I recently. When I pointed out that I didn't think the wine we received was Sancerre the manager told me that Sancerre is sauvignon blanc. I agreed but pointed out that a restaurant, especially a French one, shouldn't mislead its customers by promising Sancerre and serving up an inferior glass of the same varietal. I suggested this was the same as promising Champagne or Chablis and serving up a non-regional sparkling white or chardonnay. The manager agreed. Unfortunately, he did not apologize and did not offer a refund. You decide whether this is acceptable. I will not be back

Phenomenal French Cuisine

By Stelly3665 |

We stopped here on our way from Midtown to the Met. Wow what a great find. The atmosphere is nice casual bistro like. The service is authentic French but once they warm up to you they are really nice. The Halibut dish is probably one of the best Halibut dishes I have ever had. It was as beautiful as a piece of artwork as well. Try the Chateau Barbanau white wine with it. Nice combination. The beef carpaccio was also delicious. The endive salad was excellent. Don't be fooled by the rating because this is such a small restaurant they will never be able to get enough reviews to keep up with the larger touristy restaurants.

Lucky lunch discovery

By Chuck G |

Recently in New York for a short stay, we happened upon a wonderful little French restaurant. Purely by chance, on a walk from midtown toward a museum visit, we stopped for lunch at Le Charlot. What a good decision it was. We were greeted and seated right away, even though it is a small restaurant and a nice crowd was already dining. Our service was excellent throughout the meal. A nice selection of entrees on the menu, including my favorite... steak tartare. We found the ambiance to be very pleasant, service attentive, and excellent food and wine. Prices were reasonable. Worth the walk from our hotel on 49th.

Pleasant

By Noe12 |

The ambiance is not truly French but pleasant and actually quite relaxed! The wait staff was hardly enough attentive, but our privacy wasn't disturbed. There was absolutely no arrogance, and we were not pressured at all while ordering! The foie gras was excellent; too bad that neither the baguette nor the toast nor the accompaniment were enhancing its amazing flavor and texture.. By the way, if you enjoy a crunchy tasty baguette-not at Charlot, the bread was terrible. The beet salad was creative offering the unusual contrast of the yellow and red beets served with a mild goat cheese. The mussels Marinière with white wine were excellent. The STEAK au poivre; black angus frites was cooked perfectly, and the cut of the steak was very very good, as a result, this is an excellent dish.

Good service, nice variety and well executed

By Andy S |

After a long day in the city I stopped by for a late dinner around 9 PM. The place was still packed, with people outside waiting for tables. They had a few tables set up outside and little overhead heating units were just enough for me to comfortable during a cool evening at one of the outside tables, joining three other parties. Service was prompt and consistent - I expected having to vie for attention, but that was never an issue. One of the owners, acting maître d', took time walking to most tables, catching up with regulars, setting up weekend golfing plans at the Hamptons - but showed no interest to add a new regular, if you get my drift. Generally I enjoyed the courses I ordered. I felt, the avocado crab appetizer could have benefited a little extra spice to make up for the blandness of an avocado. The Mahi Mahi came on a delicious couscous. The Mousse au Chocolate had the right texture and richness. Objectively it was NOT too sweet, but for my personal taste, it could have been even less so. The only thing that had me "longing" was the bread. It was fresh and plenty - but I was secretly expecting something more memorable. Having to drive later, I stuck to regular water, but had a Kir Royale up front. With tip, this single patron paid $115.00, which I felt was on the high end for the value.

okay for mother daughter lunch

By Jillian Smith |

My daughter and I met at Le Charlot for lunch a couple weeks ago. There was a short wait, and the man seated the people behind us first. The service was okay, a 20 year old lady came by every once and a while to check on us, but she didn't seem to love her job. The food was great, I had Mussels and fries, which were amazing. The bill came out to 99 dollars for two people, but after all, it is NYC.

Le Charlot: excellent!

By Lolly034 |

A charming, intimate Bistro style French gem. Lovely, charming atmosphere. Delicious food. Bruno, one of the owners was on hand to welcome and make guests feel special. Would always be a go to place!

A Gem for wine lovers

By Lkolo7 |

You won't find a place like that outside New York. Very good food and a wine list with Bordeaux backing 1982 with very reasonable price. I have been to this place three times in the last few months and I don't live in NY. I go for the wine and the food is a plus. If you like good wine, you will know what I am talking. This is not a place for Snobby people though. This is a bistro with a 3 star wine list.

DISAPPOINTING

By stevensusan |

given prior reviews and how cro9wded the restauraant is, expected a fine meal but overall disappointing.;Ordered rack of lamb but brown sauce was just bro9wn, no9 flavor. other items ordered were mediocre, the mussels were very good but fries served lukewarm and not crisp. service staff are very busy doing hte best they can in a crowded small restaurant. entree prices were ok but starters a bit steep. cauliflower soup $10 was bland. crab salad good but $18 for a small portion. the atmosphere is pleasant though noisy and music is loud and def8initly no9t associated with a french atmosphere but more southbeach

Felt Like Being in Paris

By Beverly T |

We had visited the Frick Museum and walked several blocks to this wonderful place. Small and cozy. We had a late lunch of soups--both the mushroom and onion were delicious--and salads. The bread was as close to being in France as you can get. Had some glasses of rose champaign in a corner window table. The service was excellent. We could not have asked for a more perfect bistro.

OMG the BREAD!

By Ronkabidy |

Stopped in after a trip to The Frick - small bistro seemed family owned. The young waiter reminded us of a young Baryshnikov. The bread wad to die for (nobody makes breads like the French) The French Onion Soup was wonderful. tons of onions, cheese nice and browned. VERY hot though, took most of the meal to eat it!! The warm chicken salad was quite good. The chicken was grilled crisp and very tasty, the corn was roasted and also yummy. The Chicken wrap was HUGE... the chicken and salad flowed onto the plate and was a nice presentation. Red Beet Tartare & Goat Cheese was excellent and the best goat cheese we have ever tasted.

Great late lunch after visiting the Frick or Met

By Napa_Travelers |

Le Charlot is a splendid French bistro two blocks away from the Frick and near the Met. Have a lentil salad, a Frisée Salad with prawns or a terrific avocado and hearts of palm starter followed with a huge bowl of moules with leeks in a wine broth. Pair with athe decent Sancerre. Do it on a warm day after a art fix.

Charming, great food, lovely atmosphere

By lmandm |

Stopped in after an afternoon of museum visiting. The staff was super friendly. The food was solid, good French bistro fare and not overly expensive. The beef carpaccio was heavenly. As patrons arrived, many were greeted by the owner as regulars. The service was impeccable. Highly recommend this gem.

Late lunch at great bistro

By MCBda |

Had a late lunch here last weekend after wandering Madison Avenue, enjoying some of the summer sales. Typical French bistro - tables close together, lots of atmosphere. Shared the steak au poivre with frites - which was delicious! A lovely glass of wine to go with it, coffee at the end... hit the spot. Service was good, very attentive. Obviously very popular as it was busy, all the tables were full, even at 4pm. Would definitely go back.

Delicious but Overpriced

By intimagemd |

We ducked in here on a Monday for a late lunch/early dinner and two of us ordered lobster salad; and the third ordered Mahi. All the food was excellent, but the portions are small and overpriced. For 3 of us, our entrees, 2 iced teas and 2 Sangrias came to $172 including tip….and the place is not so nice, and the service not so good, that they can warrant such prices. One of the waiters was very nice and the other was snooty, rude and apparently imposed upon by our simple questions. I was unimpressed by the people or the locale, and while the food was tasty, there wasn't much OF IT and it was grossly overpriced.

Soft scrambled eggs with black truffles for brunch!

By mushcat |

They are perfect every time - so delicious that I never order anything else (the portion is big enough to share), with crispy french fries and salad. Mmmmmmmm. No reservations accepted for 2 people at brunch, so if you are only 2, go early, The restaurant is small and fills up quickly.

Abysmal Bistro

By cinematicdesign |

The scenario: decided to get after dinner drinks and dessert at this charming French bistro to cap off a wonderful evening with a dear friend who recently moved to the neighborhood. We told our intentions to the older gentleman at the door and we were seated inside where the music was louder than ideal but didn’t request it to be lowered as we were only going to be there a short while. A waitress promptly came to our table and brusquely asked us what we wanted to drink. We said we would like to see the wine menu to which she replied they only have one white and three reds from which to choose. As she was serving our wine selections, I asked her for the dessert menu. She brought it to us muttering that she thought we wanted cocktails and that was why she didn’t provide the wine list (which was conspicuously located at the bottom of the dessert menu). Although it would have been nice to choose from the fourteen or so white and red wine options, we let it go for what we had ordered was adequate. A different waiter returned and took our dessert order for a slice of chocolate cake. Twenty minutes passed and we joked that they must be baking the cake for us. More time passed and still no cake. So we asked for the check and not only we were billed for the cake but we were also overcharged for the wine. My friend asked for the cake to be removed but didn’t mention the price discrepancy for the wine as we wanted to keep the interaction simple. While we were waiting for the adjusted bill, a third waiter brought the long awaited piece of chocolate cake which we declined as we were ready to quit this disappointing place. We were handed the revised bill along with some flan as a makegood. We courteously accepted and ate it. We agreed that their flan was mediocre (and I love flan). We paid the bill and reluctantly tipped the inept wait staff as my friend lives around the corner and wanted to keep things on the positive side…

Wonderful little place in quiet area

By PamelaVio |

Wondeful little french restaurant a couple of blocks from central park in a quiet setting. It had the european feel so it was lovely. Very busy place. Not sure if they accept reservation as we just walked in. It is definately easier to walk in as a couple rather than a big group. I has the mussles and they were amazing. Probably the best I have ever had. The portion was in abundance and they come with chips which were also well prepared. Although busy they did not rush you and I really liked that. Definate must if in the area

Don't eat at their Southampton restaurant!

By 20cia |

Very bad service and not so great food. Rude management who don't know how to run a restaurant! I don't know who they have running their Hamptons place but they better make a change!

Great Brunch

By Kent B |

This is a fairly small restaurant in the upper east side of Manhattan. We were there for Sunday brunch. Everyone in our party agreed that our choices were excellent. If you go, consider the Mussels, the fries that go with it are also great.

Delicious but surprising

By BrinnonHal |

Went here for lunch after visiting the Frick. Very accommodating and personable staff. The three of us all got different things and enjoyed them. The surprise was the bill. Two of us got lunch specials and we all ordered wine by the glass. These things were not on the menu and we did not ask the price when ordering. Our mistake. The bill was higher than expected. Lesson learned. Unless money is no object, always ask.

Fantastic

By marabel100 |

What a lovely place to eat. The ambiance is a real treat. And the food is delicious. We had very little time, and they accommodated our need to rush without missing a beat. I will definitely go back.

Keeping up with the best

We have been coming to this restaurant for over 15 years, the consistency of the service, the consistency of the quality of the food and the cozy ambience this little restaurant at gem in Manhattan. we definitely love it. It is s no miss for your next stop in the city

Wonderful french bistro

By AirplaneLiving |

We enjoyed a Saturday lunch outside, 5 people, on a sidewalk table in front of the restaurant. We shared a number of high quality and tasty salads, and most of us went for the steak au poivre with frites, which did not disappoint at all. The pepper sauce was incredibly tasty and most of us didn't leave a drop. One of us had the mussels which were also enjoyable. A few bottles of domaine ott rose to wash it all down! A very pleasant lunch on the Upper East Side. I will return again and certainly recommend if you are looking for a small and intimate neighborhood French bistro.

Really beautiful setting with friendly attentive staff. The onion soup, salad steak were excellent! Will definitely go back.

Excellent & trendy French bistro

By Sergio S |

Excellent food. Elegant setting in Manhattan’s Upper East Side. My wife’s Moules Frites and my Veal Scaloppine were delicious. Sophisticated but cozy atmosphere.

Don't go to Southampton

By rdf67 |

The Southampton restaurant did not have french fries. Can you believe it? They serve mussels, steak, etc. but no french fries. I told them they could go to Waldbaums 2 minutes from the restaurant and buy potatoes, but they said those potatoes were "bad." Happened to go shopping afterwards and the potatoes (and frozen french fries) were all fine. Absolutely unbelievable. Tried to call owner, but he doesn't seem to care.

Delightful Surprise Near the Frick and the Met

By Ruhskis |

Close your eyes and pretend you are in Paris. Lots of charm, great onion soup and the freshest and best moules-frites on this side of the Atlantic. The frites were hot and crispy; just right for dipping. A delightful respite from museum-hopping. Only negative was that you may have to wait for a table in this tiny place and the prices were no bargain--but these things just make it feel all the more like you're on the Left Bank.

Perfect French Bistro

By Chris H |

I eat here every time I come to New York. I always get a warm salad with chicken and it is a treat. Great food, great service

Questionable service but good meal

By travelling_sister |

Eclectic lunch menu. Certainly not just French. The waiters were not as warm and friendly as you would expect. One of the waiters was particularly pushy about selling us wine. 3 of us had the white wine and leek mussels which were divine.

Tasty

By Richard M |

Quick, friendly service. Comfortable. Really good food. We ate there for lunch. The three in our party each chose a different salad. Portion size was above average. Fresh ingredients. Well balanced texture and tastes. Not pricey. I would definitely go back for the mussels.

Smoke ..

By alberto f f |

The place is pretty, the food i think standard, since the steak was a little overcooked, and the mussels was "unpersonal" . Price pretty high considering the veryngood wine selection on just french wines. We were lunchin outside on a litle table . No towel but thats ok, no smoking and its ok , but when a guy comes and smokes aside me, then its not ok. Don' t really care if its the owner or whtelse , but its unaccettable and the waitress jut cheering as nothing happened .Left without any tip.

Very good salad and mussels near the Armory and Hunter College

By Andrew K |

My wife and I enjoyed our lunch here: Endive Salad ($18) was skimpy on the Roquefort, but otherwise was very good. I had Thai Mussels and my wife had Curry Mussels ($30 each), both very good in large portions with great fries. Service was fine. Review saying the restaurant was terrible seems fake, and the review talking about crammed tables has to be pre-pandemic, so ignore both of them. We'll come bqack.

Average French Bistro

By ap |

La Charlotte is loosing its fine touch. Appetizers they were out of red beets so salad made with only yellow beets, heart of palms a bit gray, ginger muscles pretty good, avoid the tuns salad.

Top Quality Food and Ambience

By PPPScotland |

Stumbled upon this restuarant whilst on holiday and had a great time. Having lived in Paris, the food lived up to expectations. My wife had a mouth watering Lobster salad and my son and I the steak frites done to perfection. In contrast to some of the earlier reviews we were made extremely welcome by the charismatic proprietor and staff and there was a great buzz about the place. Not cheap but given quality of food and location, good value for money.

Extremely loud, cramped, and zero charm

By InternetCoco |

There is nothing interesting about this restaurant. It is so loud that it's impossible to have a conversation. Tables are tiny and very close to each other. The bread is hard. The menu is missing obvious French dishes such as escargots, or foie gras. The dining room is just a space with tables and white walls. Plain, boring, and uninteresting.

Great hip Euro crowd

By luv2travel1231 |

Great bistro with excellent food. The Duck spring rolls are crispy and oh so good. The Tiger Shrimp is also a favorite. We were a party of four and all ordered something different and all enjoyed our meals. Being right off Madison in the 60's the prices reflect that. If your in the mood for a bistro with a good looking crowd and good food ......here is your next stop.

Great Find on Upper East Side

By gary s |

We came across this gem while walking on the upper east side, It was as if we stepped into a paris bistro. The atmosphere and experience was very parisien. The menu was varied and the food was very good. The service and staff could not have been better. Highly recommended

Great restaurant

By Chi-Chi’s Dad |

We walked by it one night and it looked so pleasant we made a reservation for the next night. We were not disappointed. We sat outside at one of the 7 or 8 tables they have on the sidewalk. You are just far enough from Madison Ave. that you are not bothered by traffic noise. It is most dog friendly for outdoor dining. My wife had a chicken dish and I had the pepper steak. We were both pleased, and for a French restaurant on the Upper East Side, the prices are moderate. The other diners appeared to be enjoying themselves, and what was more telling, all the waiters were smiling or laughing. We were seated next to the front door and struck up a conversation with the manager. He told us the restaurant opened in 1996 and most of the customers live nearby - it is a neighborhood restaurant. As tourists we were lucky to have stumbled upon it, and will return if we again visit New York.

French bistro with exotic flair

By LovetheBigIsland |

We were museum hopping and our concierge recommended this restaurant. We are glad we had a reservation at this small restaurant with excellent French onion soup, tuna tartare, mussels with lemongrass (excellent), and highly rated (by our table) crab cakes. A Rhone red wine was excellent and complemented our meal perfectly. This is a great spot for lunch either before or after visiting the Frick Collection.

A lovely delicious lunch

By anne C |

A delicious lunch with a lobster and citrus salad and tabulated followed by an exquisite raspberry lemon sorbet! Everything we love. Diligent and smiling service! A pleasure just before visiting the Frick Collection.

A Wine experience

By Taster5 |

A French bistro in NY. Dim lighting in a small room but tasty food. moulles were very popular but my rack of lam, delicious. The patron responded to my complaint about the wine by producing a second bottle that was also "off", then proposed a third, at lower price. Dinner proceeded at a comfortable pace and we left determined to return.

Real French food off 5th Ave NY

By YassieG |

So you've been shopping all day on 5th Ave or traipsing round museums - either way it's time for lunch and I highly recommend Le Charlot as a great little spot. My husband and I found it by chance having visited the Frick Gallery. It was pouring with rain and we were running for shelter and what a find this little restaurant was. As we entered it was clear the restaurant is French as waiters greeted us in their native language and showed us to our little table. Now I must add at this point that it became quickly clear that this is a restaurant frequented by locals. Right off the tourist drag it's the sort of place that you would have to know was there and there is nothing more comforting than realising everyone there is a regular, and even more comforting that many of them were actually French. The downside for us however was that as non regulars we were not treated with the same pomp and circumstance as the other diners. We were clearly given the worst table in the restaurant that was so small we barely had room for our dishes and was tucked away in the furthest corner - bearing in mind the place was not full this was not really necessary. Anyway moving on from this little issue the place was still charming with a warm atmosphere that you could happily enjoy for some time. We ordered the moules marniers with French fries and soup of the day which was cauliflower. Of course we were given the obligatory French baguette which was delivered in customary fashion in a basket with no side plate. The bread was ok - not brilliant as it was lacking the crisp exterior you would expect from bread in France. The butter was very hard and impossible to spread too. The mussels however were perfect and the white wine sauce they came in divine with a perfect balance of leek and flavour. The soup too was delicious although it could have been warmer. We washed this down with French wine, of course. First the Pinot Noir - this was a little flavourless so we tried the Bordeaux next that was very pleasant and certainly brought back memories of the country from which it came. Again the service was a bit hit and miss - having ordered wine ours was forgotten whilst regulars were doted on but still the food and ambiance was so pleasant we found ourselves forgiving them for this. With all the French banter going on and wonderful dishes being delivered with copious amounts of red wine in the place the whole experience was quite a buzz. So if you love all things French, and of course most importantly their food and wine, then this is a lovely little hideaway to try. If you are looking for perfect silver service and attention then give it a miss. I'd go back but next time will expect to be treated like a regular!

Gorgeous French food!

By PatagonianCoyhaique |

A treat to the eye as well as taste buds! Great ambience and most people having dinner there were French. The waitstaff (who also spoke impeccable French) was attentive and made good recommendations. The dishes were a work of art and the tuna and lamb we ordered were cooked to perfection and the recommended sides were a perfect complement to the fish and meat. The chocolate mousse was to die for! Looking forward to visit it again on a future trip to NYC.

Genuine french gem

By robw48 |

To say we could have been in Paris is a complement - the food was good and the service was excellent and the place has real atmosphere and a certain zingg...... of course, given its location, it is not cheap (poor people don't live around there) and neither is there a lot of space inside but then that's what you'd expect in France

Nasty, bland, and crooked.

By PutneyVT |

Started with duck rolls (heavy, overly sweet, and nasty/not-so-fresh tasting), and tuna tartar (very bland). One of those made us sick. Waitstaff and management were extremely unpleasant, and waitress was wearing a strap top, and painted on leggings that were gag-worthy (nothing against S&M, but really didn't need rolls of skin and to go with already nasty duck, let alone sweaty armpits dripping over our drinks, or leggings fit for a pachyderm's digits). To top it off, rather than split the bill, they charged us twice! Didn't realize until today when we confirmed with friend who was with us that she was also charged $224 (yes, the food is expensive, not just bland and nasty).

Bad choice

By nrais |

The service was slow and staff was not very welcoming. This was a pleasant Saturday in the city we stopped for lunch on our way to the MET. We sat outside, this was pleasant. The food was OK, nothing special. I am from Paris and this place has only the name and the look of a French bistro.

Fake french

By Bora D |

French restaurant only in the name. The service is very poor from the service of wine until the managers comportement. Many minuses for a restaurant at that prices. Dont recommend.

Very Good Spot

By billyboy18 |

This little French Bistro is a good spot for lunch when visiting the Frick or shopping on Mad Avenue. Absolutely terrific onion soup is a must. We also had the moules marinaire which was not as good with small mussels. Broth was excellent though. Very French Tres Chic with good service and atmosphere.

Mules fritte best entree

Classy atmosphere and good food, can be very tight and noisy, mostly upper East side crowd. Salmon is also a good choice

Creme Brulee!

We've walked past this place dozens of times. Our first meal here was excellent -- the Thai Moules Frites was very good, and the Creme Brulee was possibly the best we have had. Excellent, welcoming, service.

Consistent quality, good service and nice ambiance

By Aldo M |

We have been coming to this restaurant for over 15 years, the consistency of the service, the quality of the food and the coziness of the ambience makes this little restaurant a hidden gem in Manhattan. We definitely love it and never had a bad experience at all. It is s no miss for your next stop in the city

Rushed us in and out

By Emma c |

I took a family friend for dinner. We were rushed from the beginning . My reservation was at 6.30 and at 7.20 they gave me the bill and made me feel rushed. And said they needed the table. At 7.30 they came back while I was still drinking tea and said we had to go. I complained to the manager who tried to say they always give at least 1.5 hours per booking. I showed him my reservation and in truth - he wasn’t that sorry or cared. I won’t go back.

Used to be a good spot but covid came !

By MC6363 |

The French management gone this French to be restaurant became a pale shadow of before. The food is ok but service is not great and then number of people and close table is not really c19 protective. Some of the clients were speaking very loudly (to the point that you could hear your own guests) and eat very dirty (using the tablecloth as a napkin fill of stain so that might’ve the reason why we were quite disappointed compared than before. But the place has the capacity to improve so… c’on guys !

Great lunch

By maxwellkg |

We stopped here for lunch on the recommendation of the people at the Frick and were glad we did. Service was a little inconsistent with some of us being served and others having to wait quite a while for their meals. The onion soup was divine and the goat cheese omelet was excellent. Though it would have been nice to have everyone (5 of us) eating together, the food was excellent.

nice !

Food is great ! Service is ok, the restaurant was half empty but they kept adding more people to the table next to ours .. was quite noisy. Overall recommended !

Shopping on Madison and you want lunch...

By Peggy B |

The rent on Madison is too high for restaurants, so you have to figure out a place to go on a side street. Sometimes that means a hike to Lexington. Just off Madison on 69th St., across from Cartier's, is Le Charlot. A small, very French, very nice spot for lunch. They offer the classics... moules, onion soup, Salade Nicoise, etc. along with a good selection of wines. The tables are tight, but the room is filled with natural light and an attractive clientele. Good choice for ladies, business, family... but not little kids, I don't think. Lunch for two will run about $100.

Good place after Frick Museum

By woody1834 |

I had lunch here yesterday after visiting the Frick Museum which is in the neighborhood. It was very enjoyable. Don't expect anything unusual on the menu, it's standard bistro fare. But if you feel like having an omelete, salad or mussels, you're in luck; good $10 desserts too. I enjoyed the ambiance & the place was full. I highly recommend.

small but charming

just happened on this restaurant while looking for a parking space--atmosphere looks like a typical restaurant you'd find in the country side of france--the prices weren't ;) we shared a salad lardon --quite nice---our entree was halibut in a truffle oil--excellent---grilled salmon with a ginger glaze--excellent--a side order of fresh pomme frites (french fries) and two big glasses of wine--we had no room for dessert--they have a extensive mussel menu with a more reasonable price--the place was very busy for a wednesday night --not enough staffing for the tables and our order was mistaken so the waitress gave us the fries on the house--the clientele seems to be upscale
