French bistro - have the crepes!

By Fireweed25 |

After visiting Columbia University and the bookstore on a weekday we were looking for a place for lunch nearby and stumbled upon Le Monde. The restaurant has a French bistro feel in decor and menu. The tables for two are quite small and close together, not the most comfortable for dining, but the food and service were good. We enjoyed the ham and gruyere cheese crepe and would order the same again.

French Bistro Experience on New York's Upper West Side!

By frequentravelor |

Delicious food in a casual, non-pretentious setting makes this restaurant one of our favorites. You can't go wrong ordering the typically French offerings, and daily platters are always worthwhile. Good wine list too.

Heaven

If u have a short time in NYC this is the place to go. Food is good and the service is the nest I've had on NYC.

Nice Lunch

By Homero V |

A nice place for lunch, French style, very good food and service. Outside seating was nice. Conveniently located near Columbia University. Burger was excellent!

Best veggie burger I have had! Great Rosemary-Lemonade Also!

By Itmatistous |

I was here on July 4th visiting family. (BTW, NYC on July 4th an absolute pleasure! Traffic light. New Yorkers welcoming. Every one has room to breathe.) Went to Le Monde for a light supper. Waitstaff was very accommodating, very quick. Ordered the veggie burger which came with sweet potato fries. Burger was extraordinary: juicy, well seasoned, generous--we veggies want as much protein as possible!) and on a whole wheat bun. Also had a Lemonade Spritz, which was lemonade, club soda, and sprigs of Mint and Rosemary. Very refreshing and NOT sweet.

Cozy Restaurant on the Broadway

By moogul818 |

It is a cozy restaurant with comfortable seating inside and a bar. Has a constructed ambience and decor of a french bistro. Service was quick, efficient and friendly. The food was good.Close to the Columbia University,it is well patronized.Has a nice clean washroom. It is a pleasant restaurant to visit if you are in the neighbourhood.

Good French Bistro near Colombia

By VTJedi |

When we walked in, it felt like being back in France. This place has a nice french atmosphere. Food cost was reasonable. Some authentic french menu items and a few others which seemed slightly out of place, but more geared towards Americans (things like hamburgers). Lunch for 2 with wine, soup, dessert, and dishes was $60. Close to St. John of the Divine, Colombia, and right across the street from Tom's Diner (the restaurant from Seinfeld).

Standard Uptown French

By Zoom_Gotti |

French-style restaurant near Columbia and Barnard. Outdoor seating in agreeable weather. Offers typical New York french fare. I had roasted chicken, mashed potatoes, beans. Also offers a selection of regional craft beers. good wine list, plus dessert. Somewhat pricey as you add on. This is a popular local spot and has a regular bar scene. Faculty, students and neighborhood workers and retirees frequent this place. Prepare because It's sometimes crowded. And though the hosts are congenial, service can be slow and careless.

Great food - fish, steak and sides.

By AgnesD045 |

We had dinner there and the three people in the group ordered different items. All three items were very well prepared: fish, steak and chicken. Easy to access, on Broadway.

Casual Brasserie near Columbia University

By weyl-59 |

Just a few streets down from Columbia on Broadway, a good cafe spot for lunch. We had the lamb burger which comes with fries and an interesting herb-flavored dip. Rustic bread. Good service, the best part is perhaps the French style ambience.

Not to Be Missed!

By Mary P |

We were invited to dinner here recently and were delighted by the delicious food and nice ambience in the back room for our large group. There were a number of different entrees sampled by the entire group, with all diners appearing pleased by their selections. My choice was an endive-beet salad--served as an entree and not a starter; I would recommend it to others. My dessert was creme brulee; it met all my expectations. One fellow diner had ordered a salad of greens with a lemon-vinaigrette and judged it to be terrific--very fresh produce and a light but tasty dressing. Wait-staff were knowledgeable and pleasant. Overall, an excellent dining experience.

Brunch with friends

By Alice C |

We had a great time here. Two people ordered the pancakes (with bananas and rum) and the other stuffed with fruit. Another person enjoyed the country breakfast while I had the shrimp and crabmeat salad.

Best Breakfast and Brunch ever.

By Patty D |

We enjoyed Sunday breakfast at LeMonde and found the food and service to be great! Between the three of us we had eggs Benedict, eggs Florentine, and a vegetable omelet. One better than the other, and all accompanied by superb home fries. It was my second visit and I'll certainly go back.

French meal on Broadway!

By Bjorn O |

Visiting my grandson at Columbia University we decided to end my trip with a three dish typical French meal. The Foie Gras was excellent and went down in style with half a bottle of Champagne. For the entre I chose ovenbaked cod and my grandson a large steak with bearnaise. My cod was prepared to perfection but sad to say we are still waiting for a US chef to deliver a good bearnaise. My Sancerre was nice but the real feat of the evening was their Bordeaux from 2007. I can´t understand how they can serve a wine like that by the glass. So I had to round off the meal with a piece of Brie and a glass of Bordeaux. Sorry to say we got very worried over the future of Le Monde. There were few guests and most of them seemed to just enjoy the hamburger menue. Maybe people in upper West side don´t enjoy the strengths of the kitchen. The Manager looked very disturbed and we understand him. Probably the premises are too large and so the personell. Our service was perfect but for the seating. The headwaitress seemed to honor the principle of always saving the best tables for the guests that never appeared. Anyway we wish Le Monde all the best and I am sure we will return at my next visit to New York.

Dessert

By Janette |

Yummy creme brûlée in a nice setting. Gateau de la passion was delicious as well. Can't speak for the rest of the food but dessert was delightful.

great UWS neighborhood French restaurant

By Tspec |

First time we went to Le Monde, my partner's fish was way overcooked. The horrified management brought a second one, which was delicious, and comp'ed dessert. That sort of action breeds loyalty, and indeed we have been back twice since during the fall and brought guests. It has become a go-to on the Upper West Side for tasty French cooking enjoyed in Le Monde's pleasant, golden-hued surroundings.

Disappointing lunch

By Helge Einar R |

The waiter was really friendly. But the food was really disappointing. The onion soup tasted colored water, the fries were greasy and overdone and the burger served with bearnaise and ketchup of really surprisingly low standard. We just dropped in and the atmosphere seemed nice; however the food was not of good french or american quality.

a restaurant this mediocre can only survive on a university campus

By hbw27 |

I've now been dragged to Le Monde about 5 times by colleagues up at Columbia and have been disappointed 4 times. The only time I didn't wretch from the food was when I ordered steak frites, admittedly a dish that is hard to get wrong. Much of the food on the menu is done sloppily and served in a disinterested way. The seafood entree I had was bland and overcooked, the salad was wilted and did not appear to have been washed properly, and the coffee was weak and tepid. Newcomers to this area would be forgiven for thinking that Le Monde is a good restaurant. After all, the restaurant decor is rather warm and welcoming and the place is routinely packed by the Columbia crowd who go there either because of convenience or because they just don't know what good rustic French food should taste like.

Lovely hot Chocolate

By Senyum |

I came here with friends for a coffee. Friendly and efficient service. Hot chocolate comes French style in a big bowl. It definitely hit the spot, thick and creamy

Expensive and not really good

By R M |

W eat brunch there and the service was very slow and the food was not amazing. Will not go back. I had steak and eggs and the steak was not quality.

A great spot.

By Star983 |

Wonderful food, excellent, professional staff. One of our favorites in Colombia Land.

better than france!

By dong sook l |

Whatever you order, it tastes great! Price was not that bad either, I was expecting to pay a lot more but it costed around $130 for 4 meals including 2 glasses of wine. What else can you ask?

Long wait.

By llockha00 |

We came to this restaurant for brunch. We were seated outside because it was a nice day. We got seated right away and the waiter came and brought us water. Then, he came back about 10 minutes later to get the order. He took the order and left. Another server came and brought us some bread and butter along with a strawberry jelly on the side. The time started to pass. About 50 minutes later I told a hispanic girl who was kind of the receptionist what had happened. The she quickly told the manager. She came back with a plate of fruits saying that the manager sent it as a gesture of apology. The they got us bread again. By the time I got my country breakfast I was already stuffed with all the bread. Then, about fifteen minutes later here come our lost waiter to bring our drinks. He looked mad for some reason and barely spoke to us. "It was as if he was muted or was having a rough day". Then the food came. To finish it off we waited 15 minutes after we were done to get a hold on our waiter to ask for the tab and pay the bill. I had to ask another waiter to please ask our waiter to come to bring us the bill. It was disappointing. If you are wondering what did I order? The country breakfast.

The best deal in Manhattan

By John G |

This review is about a special that is not on the menu -- moules frites ( about six different versions) and a draft ( five choices) for $16.95 -- just ask for it. The mussels steamed in white wine were superb. With a cold beer on a warm April evening absolutely perfect.

Needs a new chef!

By Anna L |

This was once a decent restaurant, but has changed hands recently. Very disappointed with the mediocre, greasy food and sloppy presentation! The restaurant has a certain Gallic charm and can use a new chef. I keep passing by to see if things have improved, but so far nothing has changed. Hope springs eternal!

Perfectly acceptable French brasserie

By BronxSteve |

Decent food, but not outstanding. Charming decor and outdoor seating. Casual brasserie space. Food is average, seems sometimes reheated. Café du Soleil down the street is better.

A bit of France in Washington Heights

By natalieing |

A lovely bistro with authentic French menu, excellent service, nice wine selection and outdoor seating.

Attention to detail, delicious food

By Steve N |

We went on a Saturday night and everything we had was delicious. My wife and I chose the bouillabaisse, featuring fresh red snapper and (too few) mussels. The broth was more of a bisque, but delicious. Grilled salmon was fresh and exceptional and a friend tried the Choucroute Garnie, a tribute to Oktoberfest featuring many wursts. Huge portions, and very tasty. Very good wines by the glass. AND...the bread they bring to the table? Some of the best in the city. Ask for more. :)

Love the hot chocolate

By Senyum |

Great, super friendly service. the hot chocolate was french style in a nice big bowl. will definitely come back!

A standout place in New York City

By snowman83 |

I brought my parents to New York City a while back and we stumbled upon this place near Columbia University (Broadway & 113th St). Let me preface this review by saying that my parents love to drink coffee but are very picky when it comes to finding coffee they like. Also preface this review by saying that my mom always has trouble finding food that isn't too salty, or desserts that aren't too sugary. This is truly the only place I've ever taken them where they were both 100% satisfied with all aspects of our meal (as was I). We all had chicken club sandwiches for lunch, and it was flavored perfectly with fresh ingredients - not too much salt, but still plenty of flavor. My parents then proceeded to order a coffee and dessert, and I could hardly believe it when they said it was the best coffee they've EVER had (I never thought I'd hear them heap that kind of praise on anyone's coffee). And to top it off, the dessert was perfectly prepared, as well. I also love the fact that they bring out a big carafe of water for every table so you can refill your own glass whenever you want, without having a waiter reach over you every 5 seconds. Why don't more restaurants do that? This past weekend, we went back a second time to make sure it wasn't a fluke, and everything was just as good as we had remembered. Both times, the service was good, the food was excellent, and the atmosphere was relaxing - casual but still felt like an upscale place. The only problem is that this is the only location, so we have to go to New York to enjoy it!

Paris a cote’ de Columbia University

By USTraveler020 |

This is truly a bit of Paris in Morningside Heights near Barnard College and Columbia. Attentive unhurried service in an excellent French atmospheric Café bistro setting. One of our favorite restaurants in New York City We returned this week to have steak Frites and a beautifully done hamburger. We started out meal with a cheeseboard and a delightful French onion soup. All this accomplished by excellent French bread rolls. Portions are substantial and we had no room for dessert unfortunately as they all looked delicious on the neighboring tables. Nice wine and beer selection!

Mediocre at best

By Judy G |

The meal did not come up to expectations. The Caesar salad was tasteless with a tired anchovy. The fries were soggy. And the waiter served regular coffee instead of decaf. Definitely needs to reevaluate its service.

Pleasant Experience

By Daisy B |

We were able to sit outdoors on a lovely evening. On this occasion--we've been there many times--the service was excellent. The restaurant has a very large menu and all the food the three of us ordered was well-prepared and tasty. Also noteworthy is their wide chocie of beers. I tried a new one, Fin du Monde, which, contrary to its name, was excellent. They also have a wide variety of tempting pastries; don't forget to look at them before you make your choice.

A pleasant surprise

By norbafreund |

An American surrounding and French type cuisine. Very good seafood. I ate there twice , good variety otherwise. Good service and wine availability. If you are Uptown in the West Side of N.York , it is a very suitable alternative

It's Fine

By doug100worth |

As a Columbia guy, I find myself up on campus a few times/year and seem to wind up here for lunch or dinner with a faculty person. It's fine. .

A good French restaurant

By Germán Ramírez |

It is located out of the most touristic areas of the city, the food it is pretty good, also the service. It is very tradicional without any presumptuousness, this makes this place a jewel.

Tasty dining marred by poor service

By Experiencenista |

I like the food here, it's authentic and wonderfully presented. But the service is uneven. On my last visit, the mussels in wine broth arrived quickly and were delicious. But then the waitress ignored us. This time our party was served in so many stages it hardly seemed we were dining together. We were a large party celebrating a Columbia University graduation so the restaurant was busy. A couple dishes arrived cold, two without the side changes that were ordered, and my steak frites were completely MIA. My husband was impressed with the duck, but not the tiny portion of spinach & Lyonnaise potatoes that were under it. The vegetable burger got good reviews as did the salmon. The Caesar salad was crisp, served with anchovies. It's a very noisy restaurant & the older members of our party felt cut out from the conversation. In warmer weather it's great to dine at the sidewalk tables, but it's noisy out there, too, as you sit right on Broadway. Entree prices are in the $20ish range with the $26 steak frites the most expensive option. Mussels are served with French fries & I highly recommend this $15 dish.

Great Manager

By Karen S |

Needed to get out of the rain and get a drink. The manager accommodated my party of 5 with grace and dignity. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.

Bustling French bistro

By Dr_J_F_M |

Five of us enjoyed lunch at this popular and bustling Upper East Side French bistro. Traditional fare of omelets, mussels and fries, onion soup, Salade Nicoise, and Caesar Salad were abundant and delicious. Service was attentive but stretched thin since the restaurant was packed. In sum, a great spot for a leisurely luncheon.

Great food & service

By Armand B |

Dinner with family & friends; we were fortunate to get a private room.My wife, daughter & myself ordered moles & frites; all enjoyed the food-well seasoned, served promptly. Also enjoyed the French Onion soup. Others enjoyed steak. We had excellent service & I would eat there again.

Nice Weekend Brunch

By rkounsny |

Nice and simple weekend brunch menu. Simplistic but tasty. Staff is pretty good. Been there two weekends in row.

Great Food UWS

Great French Food at affordable prices UWS. I had a pork special roll with minced vegetables. The roasted organic chicken was very good and French Fries rocked. The deserts were fabulous and well priced

Poor food by a sad attempt at a French brasserie

By ryko |

The food here is passable but they came up short in so many respects. The food took almost an hour to arrive after being ordered and the only explanation we received was "The kitchen is delayed." No apology at all. When the food did arrive there was no vinaigrette with a French salad and no condiments to go with fries. We had to ask for them and had to wait another 5 minutes. The fries were already luke warm as they had obviously been prepared earlier but no call was made to the waiting staff to serve the food. While paying a disagreement occurred between the waiter and ourselves with regard to gratuity which then extended into a conversation with a manager who constantly agreed with our unhappiness but could not actually bring himself to apologise for the rudeness of his staff. Overall an unpleasant, overpriced experience. Le Monde is trying to be a French brasserie and seems to think that serving continental beers is the way to do it...have they been to a French brasserie? I don't think so.

Brunch

By Jennifer M |

I've been here several times, and at one time was addicted to their eggs Benedict. I am a huge fan of brunch and really like to go early before the crowds and noise. This was my go-to place. But something changed, and eggs came out cold on un-toasted muffins, and the food started to be hit or miss. On good days, the omelets are wonderful--especially the asparagus. And the cappuccinos are regularly good and often cute--a butterfly or bear crafted into the foam. The service is also inconsistent. One waitress complained to me that they were busy. When I said it was good for her, she snipped at me about not being able to give good service. One unfortunate time I was there, the manager was shouting at a worker and made of show of sending him home. Don't get me wrong. The worker needed to be reprimanded for showing up to work drunk, but this should have been done in an office, or anywhere out of ear-shot of the dining room. I've had to listen to this man discuss his relationships and how long he went without sex (years)--topics that, again, should not be announced to the entire dining room of a restaurant. Between the inconsistency of the food and service, and the discomfort of the manager's discussions and actions, I don't brunch here any more. If you do decide to go, don't go early. Wait until things get busy and you can't hear that manager over the hum of the guests.

A bistro that feel exactly how you'd expect

By Vanessa |

Le Monde makes you feel like family. The wonderful atmosphere and well designed interior are the prelude to many great choices in food. Of course I have my favorites, but I start each visit with a perfectly made Old Fashioned, a sparkling water, and a perfectly prepared appetizer-size dish of Brussel sprouts - try them - especially if you've never had them because this is as good as they can be prepared.

Great neighborhood place

By Ina60763 |

We had dinner at Le Monde before a concert at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine. Luckily we had made a reservation because Le Monde attracts the locals in droves. And rightfully so, as the meal and service were lovely. Had the luck to chat with the chef who just happened to be at the entrance as we arrived. He talked enthusiastically about the menu. Justifiably so. The pea soup was delicious and delicate. The goat cheese salad, "lightened," as he described it, was delicious and put together like a work of art. I had the artichoke "stew," something new at Le Monde and unusual to find on a NYC menu. And the grilled salmon, was cooked perfectly with nice crispy skin and braised leeks. I had asked the waiter about the best dessert and he recommended a chocolate maple affair. He then overheard us saying we really didn't have time to stay to sample anything from the bakery display case. The bill had been paid but the next thing we knew the weaiter showed up with the recommended dessert and two forks. The dessert was wonderful. All the more so for the waiter's surprise initiative.

Brunch not good

By lori K |

Le Monde opened at 9:30 for brunch on Saturday. We arrived a little after 10:00. First off, the oven was not working, so we could not have pancakes. I make my pancakes on a griddle, not sure what the oven has to do with pancakes. Then the hollandaise sauce was not ready for the eggs benedict. Oh and there were no eggs either for an omelet. But there were eggs for the eggs benedict? I ended up having the stuffed French toast. It was so so. Other reviews were good, so I guess my visit was a fluke.

Great for late night mussels

By Scott M |

Went to Le Monde around 10pm Labor Day weekend - plenty of room, inside or outside. Staff exceedingly nice; Ken our waiter was a total pro. They have 4 or 5 beers on tap, some of which I was not familiar with - ordered a Pietra (a Corsican chestnut beer)...very mild. The mussels mariniere were very good - between 1-1/2-2 lbs, very generous, frites as well, and great bread for sopping. The Merguez sausage appetizer was somewhat tasty and spicy, however the texture was leathery - not hard leather, but soft leather - weird. Good overall for a late bite.

Old Parisian Charm

By blj512 |

We had an enjoyable lunch at this Parisian-themed restaurant very close to the Columbia Campus. If you would like to take your dining experience up a notch from the local spots near campus, this would be a good choice. There is a crepe stand and a crepe-maker, as well as a lovely bar area in a charming french atmosphere. We were there for lunch and my son had the crepes, my friend had a caesar salad with chicken and I ordered the salmon bagel. The food was good, and we were satisfied, but I would not consider it outstanding. Perhaps there is an experienced French chef during the dinner hours but we didn't find out. Still, we were happy with our lunch and our service and I would recommend the place if you're visiting the Columbia or Barnard Campuses and have had enough of the pizza and subs.

Good food, terrible service

By morelucknexttime |

I have been to this restaurant many times during the years, so it was an easy choice when I happened to be in the neighborhood one day in early November. It was a beautiful day, a perfect opportunity to have lunch outside. I was seated, given the menu, but no one showed up for about 20 minutes to take my order, there was no waiter or anyone in sight. Finally I waived down the waiter. I ordered a glass of wine and an antree. 20 minutes later the dish arrived, but the wine was never served. I asked for a manager, the explanation: they have a large party inside... Is this supposed to be an excuse? Am I not being charged the same prices as the large party? The manager offered me a complementary glass of wine. But the damage was already done. The nice pleasant lunch I was looking forward to ended up being a bad experience, full of aggravation. This restaurant is not a cheap place. The service should reflect this fact. Currently it does not. There are plenty of other restaurants in this upper west side neighborhood where the food and service are better than in this restaurant.

Can always count on it!

By libraryld |

Le Monde is one of a group of French restaurants located around different parts of Manhattan. Food is consistently good. Service can be uneven but is generally ok. Love the outdoor seating, however if you are two, they will not seat you at a four top and if it is busy, you will be made to wait if that's all that is available. Otherwise, we enjoy it.

Decent French Bistro near St John the Divine

By Linda N |

We recently attended the New Year's Eve concert for peace at St. John the Divine and went to Le Monde after the concert. The concert was great and the restaurant was adequate. It was crowded, of course, given that it was New Year's Eve. The waiter was not at all disagreeable, as some other reviewers found. COnsidering the crowd the service was good and all the food came out together. I had cassoulet, which was mediocre. It had a chicken leg in it that was overcooked and it looked like no one had taken a lot of care in the preparation. The onion soup was good (my husband said it was average) and my sister in law enjoyed the mussels in garlic and wine. The duck confit was average.

Very Disappointed - Won't Return

By Rose_Kavalier |

We were a party of four and had Le Monde burgers and lamb burgers. All dinners were over cooked and tasteless. I had eaten there several years ago and back then the burgers were excellent. Now, NG.

BEWARE, BAD FOOD AND LOUSY ATTITUDE

By Hank A |

I don't think you can call this a french restaurant. A french restaurant would have fine cuisine. This joint has bad grub. The chef/owner is also part of the problem. He needs to go back to cooking school and learn his trade or get out of the business altogether.

Overpriced for very ordinary food

By Voyage247920 |

Thought` I would give this place a second chance as it is in my neighborhood. Asked if a small salad could be substituted for the fries and was told only for an additional charge and was given a lecture on why it cost more to do a substitute. Service was horrid . -- no fork, forgot to bring requested ketchup, forgot to put the onions on burger. Will not give this place another chance.

Good food

By Sandy H |

I had a very large bowl of mussels and small crunchy fries with a beer. Both were delicious and the price was right. Service was good. I would return.

Very tasty muscles

By wonderwoman7757 |

This is a very lively bistro with many wonderful selections. The moules and frites were very authentic and delicious. Service was very good.

Avoid

By Joe F |

Avoid this place on weekends. Service is slow, inattentive and often overwhelmed. The food arrives cold. Take a day off from work and come on a weekday when the staff has it under control.

Going downhill, but still a treat

By Edac2 |

Le Monde is near where I live, and we go there almost every time we want to treat ourselves to a nice meal. Though the menu hasn't changed in years, it seems that Le Monde might be losing some of its polish. But not to worry, it's still a treat and the most reasonable nice restaurant on the Upper Westside. It almost seems that the prices must be subsidized by Columbia. Who knows? What I do know is that you can go for a decent brunch that winds up costing no more, and often less, than brunch at Metro Diner. But the quality of your experience depends on who you get as a server. Sometimes they're cheerful and prompt, other times they're overworked and might ignore you for hours while the table next to you has eaten and paid their bill. One time a server told me I wasn't allowed more than one refill of coffee, while on every other visit before and after I've had coffee coming out of my ears. Le Monde passes my bread test, and their sweet butter is fresh and delicious. And if you get a burger, the shoestring fries that come with it will almost always be perfect. Eggs Benedict is another favorite. If you have something in mind that's not on the menu, always ask anyway.

A great upper Westside treasure

By Windmill1712 |

Le Monde offers friendly service, a little belt, cosmopolitan atmosphere and very good food! It's located near Columbia University and is reachable by both subway and bus. Super convenient!

Relaxed, Good Food & Service

By Janbajamar |

Relaxed French Bistro near the Columbia University. Professional neighborhood crowd. Consistently good food, attentive, professional & friendly service. Try the hanger steak or Atlantic Salmon cooked just the way you ordered. The tasty warm bread & fries are favorites. Very good & varied wine selection. Indoor tables far enough apart so your conversation isn't overheard. Outdoor sidewalk tables on warm, sunny days. We continue to return. Worth the trip.

Still can not recommend

By Rose_Kavalier |

The service was terrible!!! We waited 1 1/2 hours to get served and what came was just so-so. We returned one over-done burger that was not edible. I do not recommend this restaurant.

Afternoon Delight!

By MaCherie908 |

My special someone took me here after an afternoon NY Philarmonic performance at Lincoln Center. I enjoyed a tasy dessert wine while he had a light lager. He selected the Banana & Cholcolate Crepes for us to share; they were yummy. He commented that it felt like we were dining at a little outdoor bistro in Paris! It was quite romantic and a nice way to end our special day together in the city.

Waiter....it's almost an hour!!!

By FlorinaNewYork |

I think the title said it all. We waited more than an hour for the second order… and we were told again and again that it is almost ready, and is coming. Enough! We were willing to leave and we asked for the check. The next moment the waiter came and brought the food. Of course we refused it, paid and left with a bad taste. Quelle dommage French bistro!

Unpretentious French restaurant near Columbia

By BigJNK |

Good food at a very reasonable price! The steak frites was very similar to what we ate in Paris. Good wine list.

Pretty good mussels

By Ellen28 |

Friendly service. The fries were small and crunchy and the mussels were enjoyable. 17$ was fairly priced. It's a cute, casual French bistro uptown.

Great place to sit at but average fold

By Mariam B |

If only the fries were served warm, I would maybe have written a nicer review. It's a place I have been going to for years because I really like sitting in the outside area. Breakfast is better than the other meals. Would be great if they improved the food at night. Service is generally good.

Best Bistro Near Columbia

By Peter B |

From the sidewalk tables to the French artifacts, they have the French bistro thing down. The menu has the usual classics, and are pretty well done -- steak frites with a side of bernaise was done right; goat cheese and potato tart hit the spot. In addition to wines, they have beer menu focusing on Belgian beers. Very inviting, convivial. Tres bien.

Great Birthday Brunch

By Alan |

Le Monde has become my favorite place for brunch in New York City. I particularly enjoy sitting outside and enjoying a full breakfast: spinach omelet, crispy bacon, sourdough toast, and the best coffee in NYC. Today, my wife and I celebrated my birthday with brunch at Le Monde and the food and service were again excellent. We especially appreciated the service from Nicole, who was so positive, proactive, and helpful. She made today's experience special.

Great French bistro not far from Lincoln Center

By William S |

We were delighted to find this french bistro only blocks from Lincoln Center, specializing in foods of the Loire. Cool atmosphere, eclectic menu, and decent service. Check out their menu because it is somewhat limited (although they do have burgers) along with duck confit, lamb shank, and of course steak frites

Delicious food. Excellent service.

By New Yorker |

As locals, we eat at restaurants on Broadway or Amsterdam near Columbia University frequently. Our favorite, where we've just eaten three times in the last week, is Le Monde. Today for Sunday brunch we ordered crab/lobster benedict and duck confit, both delicious. The service was good and the manager--Khalid--was really helpful. Based on this experience and the many others we've had at this restaurant, it clearly deserves the 5 star rating we've given it.

Not so good food for way too much money..

By chickenoregg |

I enjoy French food but found nothing exciting about the offerings on the menu. I opted for a classic American dinner: a burger and a martini. My friend with me had already eaten so he ordered a Manhattan. We both received poorly made drinks - mine was slightly heavy on the vermouth and his had a poor balance. Our waiter wasn't super attentive so we didn't bother sending them back..seemed like it would take too long and they weren't at an undrinkable point. (once I got the bill, for $15 and $19 respectively, I would certainly have requested better drinks....!) The burger was fine, It was cooked to medium rare but the flavor wasn't spectacular. My suggestion..go somewhere else.

Pleasant French Restaurant near Columbia

Enjoyed dinner for two here at a sidewalk table. Food was OK, but a little cold. Service was friendly, but slow.

Excellent French!

By Ming F |

We had our dinner at Le Monde after moving our daughter into her dorm room. This French restaurant has a character! We love going there because you always get great food at a reasonable price. The wait staff is always friendly and the atmosphere is nice, too!

Awful Service and Little Substance

By romeboy |

This review is based on a number of visits with friends and family. Every time we had an issue with our servers or the host/ess. Many times we were served something different than what we ordered, or the order came really late (despite the restaurant being empty), or we had to ask several times for the check and wait a very long time for our card to be charged. Once the hostess was on the phone and could not come to sit us. So my 89 years old mother just sat down on one of the many empty tables (it was 3pm and the place was mostly empty). When the hostess finally got off the phone and asked my mother to change tables and sit elsewhere even though the majority of tables were vacant). We could hardly believe the rudeness and the attitude. Frankly this place is hopeless. It’s obvious that the managers do not train their staff and just carry on providing mediocre service. Not a place we will patronize again.

Re-train the staff

By wollaton_11 |

In this neighborhood we're used to gastronomic mediocrity, and the food at Le Monde is superior to what you find in some other places nearby (but there are two better restaurants on the same block). What spoils Le Monde is the unprofessional wait-staff, who at best ignore the customers as much as possible in favor of their own private conversations, and at worst are downright rude. They may all be wonderful people in private life, but they badly need re-training. There never seems to be an owner or manager in sight, which may be part of the problem. Anyway, I have had it with Le M.

Nice place but average food

By danibrig |

This was a very pretty place with nice service but the food was just average and left to be desired. Nothing special and you can get better food in the area for the prices they charge.

Quite French and quite good

By DadMD |

This place appears to be packed all of the time and that must reflect the great food. The help from the waiter on ordering wine was spot on. Usually steak at a french restaurant is that hangar steak, which is never really great. The steak here was a thick and tender piece of delicious meat. The escargot were wonderfully garlicky. Leave room for dessert.

Not everything is excellent & it can get pricey if you order drinks...but a great beer selection, plenty of nice wines by the glass, the salade nicoise is reliably good and for winter dishes so is the cassoulet.

Very good bistro food and service

By Itinerant_Foodies |

Three of us met for dinner here and were quite impressed with the food and the service. The lamb shank and the ravioli are of particular note. The restaurant has a good french bistro feel and our server was quite helpful with good attentive service.

Bilingual Staff adds European Flair to Authentic French Bistro

By Lissa P |

The outdoor seating is reminiscent being at a bistro in Paris complete with red wicker chairs and umbrellas. The food is so authentically French that the broiled sea bass is served with eyes and tail, the pommel frites thin and the cafe au lait topped with foam. The bilingual wait staff adds to its European flair. Our waiter, Jason Sanchez was able to collaborate with the wait staff in Spanish and at the same time attend to us in English. We were transported! It’s so fortunate to have bilingual waitstaff. Ser bilingüe vale por dos! Being bilingual counts for twice as many customers!

Christmas in Morningside Heights!!

By davidinnyc72 |

We had such an incredible Christmas dinner at Le Monde! Our server, LaShawny was amazing! He’s super charismatic and kind, and his menu suggestions were perfect. We loved that the pacing was nice and slow because we were trying to savor every moment of the experience. The venison was absolutely delicious. Perhaps this will be a new Christmas tradition!!!

A+ on New Year's Prix Fixe

By customexperience |

We enjoyed dinner for 2 on New Year's. The $50 prix fixe was surprisingly good - as in very good. The lobster salad included a generous portion of tail, while the foie gras pate was almost entirely goose liver. The salad greens on the lobster plate were a bit heavily dressed, but no big deal. The chocolate brioche for the pate was nothing special, but again, no big deal. We each had the beef entrée which was essentially a beef wellington (mushrooms, no liver). It sat in a red wine reduction enriched with demi glace. It was pre-made and held at temp, and arrived on the medium side of medium rare. No big deal - we both enjoyed it immensely. Dessert was a little weak - a tour of chocolate with pots de crème - very good, a chocolate ice over a piece of brownie-like cake - okay, and a dense chocolate tart-like thing that was a little disappointing. Dessert did not affect our overwhelmingly positive feelings about dinner. Bar service as good, though Karen's perfect manhattan could have been a bit more perfect. We ordered the chateauneuf du pape, which was well worth the $100 (this was probably the most expensive bottle on the list). An after dinner pour of armangac and 12 year calvados was generous at $15 and $12 respectively. Both were tasty. The espresso was good, too. We would go again in a heartbeat, and I simply cannot understand how they serve this menu for $50. All in all, I do not know how they serve this menu for $50, but

Not great, but good for what it is...Belgian/French style Bistro

By PrinceConsort |

This place has a pretty standard Belgian/French Bistro menu...duck, steak frites, moules, chicken, etc., and in my experience the food is pretty good but not spectacular. Decent beer list. A good choice if you're in the Columbia University area, but I wouldn't make a special trip.

They serve cafe au lait in soup bowls.

By LakeUpstateNY |

Me-h. Moroccan salad was huge, lots of watery lettuce interspersed with Israeli couscous and a lonely but tasty lamb sausage on top. The kicker was the coffee, cafe au lait, with lotsa, lotsa of the said lait. It was served in a soup bowl with lion heads at the sides! How one is expected to drink coffee out of a soup bowl remains a mystery to me. Asked for a normal cup. The waiter attempted to pour the coffee out of the bowl into the cup. Spilled a bit, made a little mess, the tips of his fingers in my coffee. I requested a different, new coffee served in a normal cup with a handle. He accommodated my request without great enthusiasm. The small argument left an unpleasant aftertaste. Will not return.

dropped the ball :(

My partner and I live in New Zealand but have been coming to NYC for the last 4 years for Xmas and New Years. We stayed in the families apartment on 110th for the first 2 years and enjoyed the Heights area, we would eat here at least once a week, everything about the restaurant was great, the last 2 years we have stayed in midtown and yet still make the trek on the 1 train to eat here. However!! one bad night has soured our thoughts, we checked the website to ensure we would be ok to get a table at 9.30 (what luck the website says open till midnite Mon - Thurs) we arrived and were asked to pick a table which we did. Our waiter was very good, the woman at the bar was a total cow, her attitude the whole night was lousy (we were unlucky to be sitting right by the bar) we put up with her moaning and bad attitude all night. She didn't say anything to us but every time a server wanted something you would think she had been asked to sacrifice her first born in the fires of hell, i feel sorry for the rest of the staff. At 10.45 ( more than an hour before the advertised closing time) 4 people who wanted to come in for a drink were turned away as the woman at the bar had had enough for the night and wanted to close up, at 11.05 3 people came in for dinner, nope, turned away kitchen closed they were told. I have consistently defended le monde to my family who live up the road, I am beginning to think they are right. The manager was constantly gripping to the staff and towards the end of the night even turned up the music to almost the level of a night club in order to force the remaining customers out. A family were also there dining and super cow bar woman moaned that the children should be home in bed. Perhaps she should not work in a customer service industry. The food is great, however I also visit Paris regularly and expect to get attitude there. I feel very disappointed le monde.

French cuisine on Broadway

It was a cozy place (a separate room for a business dinner). The food was excellent and finely served.

Good food and good service

By Malcolm D |

The restaurant was not busy when we visited which is a surprise as the menu choice was good and prices reasonable Service was prompt and food very good-well worth a visit

Atmosphere is perfect bistro

By HariFenn |

This is a great neighborhood place when you are in the Columbia area and you want that bistro wine and steak frites. Nothing really special in the food area, but reliable. Just easy bistro food with a comfortable old-time-euro atmosphere. Cozy bar, tables, and sidewalk too. A misture of profs & 50s crowd. My choice when I have to meet my uni son.

Took a bit to get there, but definitely worth it.

By BJVL52 |

We didn't navigate the subway as well as we should have, and we had to walk a quite a few blocks to get there. One of my daughters was famished, so getting off on the wrong stop was not a high point of our visit. We sat outside and loved the atmosphere. It was a Saturday morning, so lots of families and students were walking by. It was great to see such a diverse crowd. Breakfast was good! Two of us ordered Eggs Benedict and one, a vegetarian, ordered a bagel and cream cheese. When the bagel arrived, it was served with lox on the side and, since she's a strict vegetarian, I thought she was going to pass out. There was no problem after we removed the lox from the plate; she loves NY bagels, so she was happy. The eggs benedict were good, and we decided to save room for creme brulee and an eclair. Oh my goodness, those were divine. It was a beautiful morning in a good restaurant and we enjoyed the food and atmosphere, so it ended up being a great experience. Next time I'll make sure my daughter has a snack before we take out on adventure!

You can count on it!

By trip_1963 |

Le Monde is a cute French Bistro up across from Columbia University. The food is fresh. My daughter had a Croque Monsiuer and it was terrific. The onion soup with gooey melting Gruyere cheese was fantastic. The goat cheese salad was generous and delicicious (I asked for shrimp with mine.) they have indoor and outdoor cafe seating when the weather permits. And you never know who you might see. (Celebrity academics, of course!) Cornell West was eating there the last time we were there.

Fabulous food!

By Rosie P |

We just had a fabulous meal at Le Monde! I had the lamb shank, and it was melt-in-your-mouth delicious! I was scooping up the sauce in my fork, wishing I had a spoon (which of course I could have asked for). Then we had the profiteroles for dessert, and that was also scrumptious. Service was friendly, and we were able to sit out on the sidewalk, which was lovely. We will be back!

Busy place but OK

By DT1254 |

A crowded little place, you really have to enjoy sitting close to others who you may or may not have met before. The service is good and so is the food. No frills and nothing special, just a good basic menu.

WORST SERVICE IN THE WEST SIDE

By wollaton_11 |

I had to go to Le Monde again, for reasons I couldn't control. WE WAITED 40 MINUTES FOR OUR ORDER, and whereas at some restaurants when inordinate delays occur they try to make it up to you in some way, Le Monde was scarcely even apologetic. Horrrible place.

Nice Brasserie

By Maria M Irizarry |

Probably one of those few places in the upper west side that offer affordable French food. There is usually no wait and the food is good. Nice if you want to grab a late night snack or burger.

Why not.

By vladmeisterNYC |

Located on Broadway, not far from Columbia U. Hostess and waiters are friendly, but super slow. Even with about 40-50 % of tables empty had to wait forever. Serving high end teas in sachet. Plat du Fromage selection for 19$ was just ok. Panna Cotta was decent. Would not make this into a special destination, but if in the vicinity - why not.

Reasonable french food in NYC

By Edgardo K |

Went there with a group of 6. They didn´t even have a clue on what gluten-free means, so we didn´t start very well. The food was reasonable, but not amazing. Service was good and we didn´t have to wait too much to get our dishes.

Brunch with the family

By Wanderlust1105 |

I went here for brunch with about 5 people. This place was recommended to use by a native New Yorker. I ordered the stuffed French toast. It was so delicious. I had a side of bacon with mine. The bacon was crispy and delicious. There were no complaints at all. I can't wait to come back here for a different meal.

Lovely UWS Bistro

By Paul E |

Now that the weather is a bit more moderate, stop here and dine al fresco. Lovely lunch served by a seasoned wait staff. Great food & delicious coffee to round out the lunch. Lunch for two was about $50.00 which is moderate for the quality and the ambience.

Average, at Best

By Larenim |

Noisy environment. Forgetful wait staff. Caesar salad dress was tasteless, kinda like IHOP. The Octoberfest special entree of sausage, pork shank, kraut, etc. was pretty good. A hearty meal. Desserts were nothing special.

Excellent brunch

By SNDBoston_MA |

We stopped in at Le Monde for a brunch. The coffee was excellent. The croq monsieur was very good. The shakshuka was very tasty. And our son liked the burger. Very enjoyable brunch.

a little bit of Europe in the city

By threedev |

After enjoying the beautiful Hispanic Arts center on upper Broadway we decided to find a place to eat. Simply walking along we saw the outdoor cafe seating and went in. Broadway at this point is truly a "broad way " with a generous center strip planted with large, mature trees, bushes and flowers. The traffic on this Sunday afternoon was minimal and the weather perfect. We enjoyed sitting and sipping good wine while watching the passing parade of people out savoring the late afternoon calm. The grilled shrimp salad was perfect and generous and the service prompt and cheerful. It truly felt like a taste of Europe!

French Cafe! Best Sidewalk Cafe food! Beautiful decor and ambience indoors too!

By Rhonda R |

We stopped in after a stroll on a summer's eve for a magical LATE dinner! It was a weeknight (9:15) and the crowd at the cafe was a fun-loving bunch. The staff was courteous, welcoming, friendly and helpful ! The sidewalk seating was comfortable and roomy . The mussels were the special feature of the evening... I have never had them prepared like this before... it was a white wine sauce, which is typical, but they were then liberally garnished with shallots and basil , which was such an elegant touch that was very complimentary to the white wine and garlic broth. They were DIVINE !! Great BUY!! Our waitress helped us to select a wine and I would recommend that you try the Sans Sann (spelling?) Wine with the mussels... we tried both the Sans Sann and the Sauvignon Blanc, and much preferred the Sans Sann. The salad was good, the crusty french bread good , and roasted carrots...amazing! This restaurant highlights so many vegetables as a side dish... I want to try them all !! Go with the french fries .. (the mashed potatoes are a different version which are not our favorite) ... Also requested a Cappuccino for after dinner, (skinny and iced ) It was the perfect ending to our meal !!

Great Place for Mussels and Fries and More!

By Marion S |

Like it's sister restaurant (same owners similar menu) a bit further south, this one is named for a French newspaper. It's a moderately priced bistro serving French favorites like escargot. I like it as a neighborhood joint. We're mostly veg at home, but when I get a craving, that's where I go for duck, but they have a decent veggie burger if that's your thing, and other good choices. One of the specialties is Moules Frites (mussels and fries). Unlike a certain restaurant next door to it, Le Monde isn't usually packed, and the tables are spaced far enough apart that you can have a conversation. Some of the two person tables are comically small, but that's par for the course in New York. I wouldn't say it's worth a trip from a distant part of town, but if you are in the neighborhood, it's definitely a good choice.

A True French Bistrot in the UWS

Excellent experience, first time customer. Everything we ordered was delicious - tuna tartar, escargot, salad nicoise, mushroom ravioli, apple tart and crepe Suzette. Service was friendly and efficient and the decor was pleasant. Very authentic French food.

French restaurant with old New York Vibe

By NYC Museando |

I met a friend and had dinner at La Monde. We sat at a table that was next to the open windows so we enjoyed the cool evening breeze. The decor felt like old NYC. Glamorous and well made. Everything was clean and the staff was friendly. They brought us basket with fresh French bread and butter and it was delicious. My friend had a salad and I had the salmon with spinach. The salmon was a little crunchy on the outside and so tender and flavorful inside. We were serviced quickly and our food came out in a timely manner. We had wine and chatted for almost four hours. After a while they didn’t check up on us! We were going to close our then we had some coffee.

Great Place to Eat and Converse

By Susan P |

I wanted a restaurant where the food was good and it was possible to hear your companions. This is not an easy find in a city where restaurants are very crowded with tables so close together that you can hear comments from people several tables away. My friend suggested Le Monde, a restaurant that is an Upper West Side institution. The meal was very good, the place is large enough that there can be quite a number of people and still quite a bit of room. We did not have to speak loudly to be heard. The wait staff was very attentive. The desert was great.

Fine French Food

By Patricia N |

An excellent French Bistro in the Columbia University neighbourhood far from the crowds of Times Square. Easily accessible along the Number 1 Metro Line. Get off at Columbia University (116th St.). It provides a number of choices, either à la carte or with a "prix fixe". We have eaten there a few times and have enjoyed everything. Desserts are exquisite! Prices are very reasonable for both food and wine. The restaurant is also open late. If you have time while you are there, take a stroll through the beautiful campus of Columbia University.

Solid, Excellent French Food - Welcoming, Wonderful Atmosphere

By DCflyboy |

On a visit to NYC, I met an old friend and her 10 year daughter for a catch-up dinner. The atmosphere reminded me of many wonderfully alive, crowded Parisian restaurants filled with conversations and the sounds of dishes and glasses during a busy dinner with great food and wine. We ordered across the menu and sampled each other's food - all dishes were excellent, fresh food with absolute French authenticity. I will return to this restaurant on every future trip to NYC. If you like French Food, with a lively peopled atmosphere, you will love this restaurant. Also of special note, the staff handled the needs of a 10-year old with precise expertise and she loved her food and the attention.

Very pleasant experience

I had lunch with a friend there recently --- outstanding mushroom ravioli! The service was prompt and attentive. No quibbles with either the food or the service --- also a very pleasant ambience.

A great place to sit and see New Yorkers go by

By Nutan G |

We had cheese and wine at this place sitting outside in the pelting rain and seeing people walk by. The place is just right if you have a lot of time on your hands. The service is slow but very positive. They don"t hurry you over your meal. Its a very relaxed restaurant.

Very good french restaurant

By TMARCHISIO |

Food is very similar than French Restaurants, tasty, fency. Waiters are very kind and they try to speack french. Lovely

Wonderful food but poor service.

By Paul G |

Atlantic salmon was wonderful and my colleagues both really enjoyed their entrees. Good presentation. Never saw our server after placing our order. Had to ask for a dessert menu twice, had to ask for check three times including getting up and going to the host stand. The food's great, but be prepared to start flagging down passing waitstaff because you might never see your own server again! And, yeah, I'd go back again.

French restaurant

By Vincent B |

Nice restaurant with semi interesting menu but medium quality and medium service. A bit overpriced for the quality & service - not for the location Lamb burgers are good

Creme Brulee and Service Out of Sight

By Eric P |

Can not comment on the food; but the Creme Brulee and white tablecloth service and small details make Le Monde a worthy stop. Asked for lemon with my water and the waitress brought it out in a small sherry glass - nice touch. If you can get an outside table during pleasant temps, the view of Columbia University in tandem with the French bistro experience provides a smidgen of an old world euro-feel.

Good place around Columbia

By Com1980 |

Though not a WOW restaurant, this place offers good food at reasonable prices. I love the French style atmosphere. Music is wonderful and the outside sitting very enjoyable. Le Monde is accesible and a good choice if you are around Columbia University.

Mussels Monday est tres manifique!

By wonderwoman7757 |

Mussels Monday at Le Monde is such a pleasure. For a mere $10 you can get perfect pommes frites and a cauldron of luscious mussels prepared in a choice of different savory broths . They serve it with very high quality crusty bread. It could make Monday your favorite day of the week!

Great people watching; yummy lobster cobb salad

By GraftonGirl03 |

Attractively decorated, French bistro across from Columbia with a relaxing atmosphere and a large sidewalk seating area. The service was fabulous. Our server was quite accommodating, pleasantly returning my Lobster Cobb salad to remove the onions(I'm allergic) with a return of a recomposed salad that was fresh, light, and not dripping with dressing. Although my husband claimed his Croque Monsieur was "mediocre," the steak sandwich with fries was a hit with my college sophomore. A "better" choice on Broadway

A Much Underated Gem !

By Gus P |

I have been intending to check out Le Monde for some time , but there are so many good restaurants in the area that I wanted to be in the right frame for a fine French eatery . Today I stopped by for desert with my lady and one of her former students she had not seen for a long time . The deserts and service were both superb , our waiter and waitress ( her shift ended while the ladies chatted ) being clean and uncommonly professional ( standards have gone down everywhere ! ) . Seating was cozy , the decor was beautiful and tasteful....even the bathroom was a work of art in itself . We stayed for 2 1/2 hours on a $40 tab....and were never bothered to order more , while staff was always available . This is "old school".....a fine restaurant in more than décor gimmicks . A welcome change of place , the only thing missing being French classical music to soothe one from the hustle of Broadway . Le Monde is " water from another time" . Treat yourself !

Overpriced and underdone

By sandrags2013 |

Went in for dessert on a quiet afternoon. Service was distracted but that would have been acceptable if the desserts had been a) good and b) reasonably priced for the quality. Desserts - tarte tatin, tarte citron, profiterole were all very mediocre in taste and presentation. The only outstanding thing was the price - around $11 for each. So extremely pricey even for the upper west side, but that might have been acceptable if they had been good.

Formidable!!!!

By Willard B |

We have eaten at this restaurant a number of times. Everything has been perfect. The staff is always acomodating no matter the size of the crowd, the food is great and the coffee what you should expect in Paris. If you are in the neighborhood, skip the places with the tourist lines and enjoy this treat.

Service PLEASE!!!!

By NewYorkVeri |

I went for lunch with my son yesterday. The outside was full, but the inside was 3/4 empty. We were seated and waited, and waited and waited for the waitress to appear. After 15 minutes my son went and asked the manager if it would be possible to order. In a couple of minutes the waitress appeared and we ordered an ice tea, an BLT, two eggs scrambled as a side with the BLT for my son, and an order of mussels for me. Twenty minutes later, still no sign of the tea, or any of the food. Then, a man appeared with some eggs and brought it to the table next to us, they informed him that they did not order eggs, he went to two other tables before he deducted that it must have been ours. My son asked him if the BLT was in its way, since he wanted to eat them together. The man, shrugged his shoulders and plopped to eggs down. We informed him that we would like the eggs with the rest of the meal. He made a face and took the eggs. Nothing happened for another few minutes, which time we got up, went to the manager and told her that we found the service unacceptable. She said "sorry, i could get your meal, but it looks like you are leaving." We did leave. Hungry and frustrated. We won't be back.

Average French Bistro

By Andrew K |

I was going to be kind -- my wife and I come here only for art shows at Columbia, or, tonight, for Paul Winter's Solstice celebration at nearby Cathedral of St. John the Divine. But being greeted when back home with an email from Open Table that we had not actually been at Le Monde for a 5:30 dinner when the restaurant was half full, rubbed me the wrong way. So, just the facts: my wife's Beaujolais was thin and watery, while my Sancerre was fine. Her onion soup was excellent. Her Coq au Vin, was just OK, while my $32 seafood platter was satisfying, if not generous with seafood. Four small shrimp, a single scallop, and a salmon filet sat on spinach that could have used garlic, and a potato patty that should have been crisp. The Roasted Brussels Sprouts should have spent more time in a hotter oven, and lacked spice. The Cappuccino and Cafe au Lait were fine, as was the service overall. The kitchen seemed like it was just going through the motions.

French Bistro Without Going to Paris

By writelyspeaking |

If staff and diners were speaking French yo'd think you were in Paris. Excellent renditions of classic bistro food. Knowledgeable wait staff. we especiall enjoyed the moules frites and french-stlye omelets.

I love this place

By EmilyJane83 |

It’s New York/French/Columbia U. collegiate, casual, hip, festive. Their ratatouille is excellent, and this side dish is enough for three. My only complaint was that we ordered a Grand Marnier crepe for desert, and it was as dry as a bone. I asked the waitress where the Grand Marnier was. She said it was “mixed in the batter.” Finally I ordered a Grand Marnier to pour on it, and after about 10 minutes, she came back to say they had no Grand Marnier. She should have told me up front they couldn’t make the crepe. Other than that we had a delicious dinner and a smooth Bordeaux, and I will go back the next time I am in NY.

Great food, very poor service

By Lara F |

I had reserved a table for five people, and after we arrived, we had to wait 20 minutes for someone to ask us for our drink orders. We then had to wait for another 20 minutes to get our drinks. At this point, our waiter asked whether we wanted any bread, which we did , given that we had been waiting for almost one hour for our food. Throughout our stay at the restaurant, our server was surly and unapologetic, The food was good, but when I am paying about $ 200, I expect a way better service. .

Good food, terrible service

By Daisy B |

We live near Le Monde, and have been there many times over the years. It is particularly well situated for the Columbia U. community, which is underserved in terms of restaurants. The service at this restaurant has always been a problem, but on our last visit it was particularly bad. There was a very long wait for any of our food to arrive; we had hoped that once the first course was served the rest of the food would arrive after reasonable intervals, but that was not the case: the wait stretched on interminably. Also my salmon which was supposed to be medium rare came as medium, and my friend's salmon, which was supposed to be medium looked on the rare side to me--BTW, she had to wait after the three of us had been served. When we complained about the slow service to the waiter, he had the manager bring out the desserts. The shock of the evening was that when the bill came, I noticed that a 20% tip had been added. One of our party went to the manager to object and the manager was extremely rude to him, grudgingly removing the tip, which is automatic for parties of six but not four, as we were, in many restaurants. Our friend was told not to come back. I then spoke to the manager and asked him about that comment and he informed me that this was not "a fast-food restaurant," that the waiter had done "nothing wrong" that it was busy (there were MANY empty tables) and repeated to me that we should not go back. I have never, never, never been treated so rudely in a restaurant. (PS: as far as I'm concerned tips are voluntary and reflect the quality of service received.)

From mediocre to awful! Faux Francais!

By Anna L |

My husband and I have been going there over the years mostly for the nice French ambience. The food had been ok, nothing special. It has changed hands and we decided to give it a try. We were there yesterday (Saturday 29th July, 2017) and had the lamb tagine and duck confit. Total disappointment! poorly presented, excessive portions and tasteless! Need a new chef!!

Surprisingly poor food experience

By Soren S |

Nice setting and deco - actually it looks like a real genuine French bistro. Waiting time for menu and Water etc. was unusually long even compared to French standards in peakhours. But the food ruined it all: The worst Moule Frites I ever had and i might have tried around 100. No taste and the plate filled with kind of dishwasherwater. No herbs. My wife had Chevre Salad - however with fromage Frais - very unfrench. The tuna Carpaccio was damaged with loads of sesame oil. Why? Only acceptable dish was kids pasta. (Not French either). We looked with envy to the neighbour restaurant. Go there instead. The worst food experience in our 6 days stay in NYC. Dont waste your time or expect French food.

Good food, sloppy service

By Playaneuron |

We have been going to Le Monde for years. The food is excellent French bistro fare, including the best burgers in Morningside Heights (don't worry, I am not considering burgers to be French bistro fare - but the steak frites, the cassoulet, the duck confit are), a good wine list with the occasional shocking bargain, and a fabulous beer list - Duvel on tap! The service recently has been abysmal. A few evenings ago we waited for our food while people who had arrived after we had were finishing. When it arrived it was actually the wrong order. They were nice about it, and we were so hungry we ate what they brought, which was fine. And they gave us dessert for free - they make the best chocolate ice cream in town, a deep dark bittersweet chocolate. But, for example, they never asked if we wanted a refill on our drink. So, I think the kitchen is still OK, but they need to clean up their service act.

A brasserie that deserves a better treatment

By Gugeux |

It is , of course, aiming at the students crowd, and I go there just to get away for luncheon. The food is basic, the service can easily be overwhelmed (I once had to way 45 minutes for a burger). A new leadership to give it a French touch is badly needed.

over elaborate not very good food

By citygirl450 |

Le Monde is an attractive restaurant near Columbia University with a pleasant sidewalk cafe. However, the menu promises more than it can deliver. Most of the food has too many ingredients and isn't very tasty. Even a chicken sandwich was soggy and nearly inedible. A Moroccan salad was way too spicy. My husband likes the moules frites here, but everything else is really not very good. There's a reason there are always tables open here when there are none available at Community Food next door.

Morningside Heights gem

I am writing this review to let visitors to New York know that you do not need to go to Midtown, or the Upper East Side, to find authentic French cuisine. In what is mostly a university neighborhood - Columbia University Campus entrance is on 116th St. - with local eateries catering to students' taste for fast food, Asian, Mexican etc. - Le Monde offers true French bistro fare. Outdoor cafe seating adds to the French style experience. But my favorite is sitting at the bar, ordering some delicious house wine, and having the meal served right there. The convivial atmosphere makes you feel you are not alone.... but it's also a great place to meet someone special for a drink.

Great Lunch Spot Near Columbia University!

By whicheall08 |

Was in town for a meeting at Columbia University and walked in to try this place for lunch. They have nice outdoor seating as well as indoor and bar seating. I sat at the bar and was waited on by a very good bartender. Placed my food order, the Chicken Club Sandwich, the service was prompt and the sandwich was really good. The only challenge was that it was so big I could not eat it without taking it apart with my fork and knife. Nothing fancy but the food is well done. I will stop in for lunch again next time in at Columbia.

"bonsoir à tous" *:)

By NoraExplorer |

OK, the moment I walked in to the restaurant, I learned French! I enjoyed my time at the bar eating and talking with the great bartender named Nikki. She would recommend good food if you don't know much about French cuisine. This is a very nice restaurant to visit after work. The restaurant offers various appetizers, salads, and entree. I started my dinner with escargot. Yummy! Then I ordered a duck dish, as always I like ordering duck confit at a French restaurant. I was very happy with both of my dishes. I placed another order of escargot to take home for my husband *:) I'd definitely come back to this restaurant and hope to try more great dishes. Another great point about this restaurant, it's very reasonable! Enjoy!

Use caution when paying your check

I went to Le Monde mid week for a bite to eat. It was quite busy which is usually a good sign, but in this case I will not return. I had a salad, main course and dessert. The portions were generous but only average in quality. My biggest concern was with the service. Again, it was only average. I requested the bill and checked it for accuracy. It came to about $33; reasonable for 3 courses (no drinks). I gave the server my credit card and when he brought the slip back for a signature I notice he had charged me $78. An honest mistake? Possibly. I pointed out his error and he said something like, "I guess I should wear my glasses." He then brought the credit card slip in the correct amount for me to sign. Instead of cancelling the first transaction they were both put through and I ended up being charged over $120 (I had left a tip on the second slip) for an average meal. I did receive a credit a few days later in the amount of $78 but the whole "mistake" was handled very badly from a customer service perspective. I will not return.

Understaffed?

By Boarding_Group_4 |

It was hard to relax and enjoy the outdoor dining and good food at this attractive café, as we were having to pursue service for the duration of our meal. We waited 20 minutes to give our order, and then only after having to track down wait staff. All told, it was 60 minutes from being seated to finally being served. As a side note, in the W.C. there was no toilet pater or facial tissue (which previous patrons must have used in desperation). The food was hot, presented nicely, and very tasty, so it is unfortunate that the service and amenities distracted from it.

Great French food in MoHi

By Emma S |

Le Monde is a reasonably priced, casual French restaurant in MoHi with good food. The food isn't the best French I've ever had, nor is the service spectacular, but in the University neighborhood it is a reliable and delicious place to have around.

If you like mussels, go on Monday!

By tbikerman |

We have added Le Monde to our list of regular restaurants. On Mondays, they have an amazing deal - $10 for mussels in your choice of 6 or 7 sauces and fries and bread. For an additional $5, you can add a draft beer. The atmosphere is nice - very French- and in the summer they have great outdoor seating. The brunch is okay - you get quite a decent portion of food, but it's rather expensive and nothing super-fantastic.

Great experience for a large family special occasion.

By Jake S |

We had 22 people for a pre-wedding dinner. Several mixed families, multiple generations, multiple nationalities. Service was professional, friendly, and fast. they accommodated a lot of individual bills. Cuisine is French-American. Drinks are well-prepared. Beer list is good mixed of micros and very good foreign beers. I had Coq au Vin. It was served hot and fresh in a tajine at my table. Close to the best I've ever had. My wife's octopus salad was the best she's ever had. Great atmosphere, not too loud, but hopping. We're going back soon.

Private family celebration

By robertazweifler |

We had a family dinner for 28 at Le Monde and it was wonderful. We met with Lucille, the manager, in advance, had a number of e-mail exchanges and came for dinner to test it out and sample other items we might select as hors d'oevres during the cocktail "meet and greet." The delivery was exactly as planned, the service impeccable and the pricing very fair. it was a pleasure to work with them and our guests really enjoyed themselves.

Fantastic, reliable (and highly-underrated) neighborhood spot.

By Nicolette_Orlemans |

My boyfriend and I took my mom here while she was in town, and had a lovely time! Excellent service and great food with all the classic French dishes and flavors you'd expect. We sat in the extra outdoor area most restaurants put up at the height of Covid. It was very well done, with plenty of room to sit comfortably and a decent set-back from the sidewalk, so you didn't feel like pedestrians were walking by too closely, with enough light to set the ambiance, and quiet, adjustable fans that kept us cool without blowing us away or drowning out our conversation. The Steak frites was cooked to perfection (accompanied by a delicious peppercorn sauce), as were the Moules frites. While the Crepe Suzette was good, our only “complaint” was that its texture was a bit mushy given the sauce, but the overall taste was great. The creme brulee is always a true winner.

The service ruined the experience

By AMDST11 |

Visited Le Monde for the first time with a friend who eats there often and our food was average but a water glass had lipstick on it as it was brought out, water dripped from the air conditioning and it was not corrected after we shared our concern, bugs flying around our food, and ultimately when a desert was not properly prepared it was taken to the back and microwaved instead of making a new one the correct way as requested. The manager could have made the situation better, but instead her defensiveness actually ruined what could have possibly been salvaged. I will not go to this restaurant again, and would suggest that if you want both good food and good service that you find another restaurant to eat at.

Loved this restaurant!

By kathytuchman |

I was so happily surprised how much I loved this restaurant! We just wanted to find something close and had walked past before, so we made an early reservation. We were sat at a lovely table by an open window door. The food was just so good - especially the tuna tarter, goat cheese salad and the salmon! The service was spot on and the wine list was very easy to navigate and the manager even came over and helped us pick two different wines and gave us a taste before we ordered a glass. We weren't planning on ordering dessert but decided to after such a wonderful meal! The restaurant was very attractive and there was a table near us where a young child was eating escargot - such interesting other diners! We will most definitely go back very soon!

A big disappointment

By TravelingWithCookie |

We Love the restaurant group Tour de France and have been to several. Yesterday, after having bought King and I tickets, we took the subway uptown to try LeMonde. It was very uncrowded as it was Tuesday, mid-afternoon...and yet the service was not good. Worse than anything, however, was the generally unclean vibe. Smudged glassware, dried food (!) on utensils. We would not go back.

Brunch nothing special

By mikitruax |

Had a brunch meeting here. First they told us all pancakes were out. Really? It was 1:30pm on a Sunday and the place was not even half full. I ended up getting Eggs Benedict and thought it was just OK. The bacon-corn cake (as opposed to English muffin) sounded promising, but at the end I barely touched those. After my meal I asked for a coke and it never came. The wait staff was friendly but I couldn't understand why they forgot my coke when the restaurant was almost empty by then.

Great brunch place!

By rh24 |

Went there three times over different weekends. Each time there was a little wait for a table. It tends to get crowded and some tables are tightly squeezed together. However, the wait was worth it each time. The food is hearty and well-cooked with generous portions. Was never able to sample their desserts which looked really inviting. Convenient walking distance from Columbia, great place to treat hungry college kids to quality food.

Late night dinner

By Barbara H |

We were here with friends for a late night dinner. We did not have a reservation and were seated right away. I just wanted a light dinner and had the arugula salad wih shrimp. It was delicious . Service was just right too.

Good French for by Columbia University.

By Ramon A |

During a recent tour of Columbia we decided to get lunch and happened upon this nice restaurant on Broadway. From the coffee to the crepes to the croque madame everything was well executed. The staff was pleasant and attentive. After seeing the reading I think this place is under rated, not a 5 but defibrillator not a star, I would place it right at a 4 or just below.

Check your check

By Ella H |

I live in the neighborhood and have been going to Le Monde since 1999, regularly. I have sadly noticed, however, the last times I have been there, that the restaurant is going downhill, both in terms of service and of goodness of the food. The very last time I was there, in particular, I was definitely unhappy and for different reasons. I ordered a simple bagel with salmon specifying that I did not want tomatoes, as I am allergic to them, and I had to wait a very long time only to get it WITH tomatoes. So, I had to send the dish back and wait additional time in order to get a chewy bagel without tomatoes. (2) When I got my check -- one of these computerized checks (not hand-written) -- I noticed something unusual: the final amount to be paid was 5 cents more than I owed. Five cents is a unnoticeable amount of money, but if a computerized check does not add properly, it raises the doubt that all the checks issued by the same system may be inaccurate. When I told the server about the problem, she promptly reported it to the manager who came to me and returned me 10 cents explaining that PROBABLY there was a problem with the computer. She seemed to me to be irritated rather than apologetic. I did not accept the 10 cents, because obviously the question was not the money. A Sunday brunch should be an enjoyable experience and this has been the case for many years at Le Monde. But after the few last times I wonder whether it is really worth to go to a place if what I order is not good, I have to wait a very long time and I cannot even trust that the final check is correct.

The best mussels ever

By Cloudtail10 |

We came here twice during a recent trip to New York, and brought friends on one of the occasions. Frankly we did not notice any of the shortcomings mentioned by other reviewers. On both occasions, service was friendly, prompt, and highly professional. The food was simply delicious, with the best mussels mariniere ever (and I am comparing to France and Belgium, mind you), excellent chicken and salmon, and great desserts. Their choice of beers if fabulous, in particular the Belgian one with raspberry (very little alcohol content). And it is indeed difficult to understand how one can get such a bargain on Mondays: scrumptious mussels, perfect fries and a beer, for 10 USD!

Pretty good French place on Broadway

By Kurt_in_CLE |

The service here was great. The waiters were nice and the food came very quickly. The atmosphere is reminiscent of bistros in Paris (except for the nice waiters) and the food is tasty. The menu is a little limited and formal, but the bouillabaisse and the coq au vin tasted good. I thought both of them were a little too salty, but I also think that about the food in restaurants in Paris. I would eat there again if I were in the neighborhood, but I wouldn't jump on the subway to go there from another part of the city.
