I swear the Detroit style pizza at Lions & Tigers & Squares is the best. The sauce and cheese are baked into the crust to give it a crisp caramelized texture and crunch and it is topped with lots of small cuts of pepperoni and then baked to perfection. The service was a little rude as the guy working the counter would not get off his phone and talk to us.

Cold crust heaped with a lot of cold, chunky marinara sauce, sprinkled with a light dusting of parmesan cheese makes for one very sad piece of wannabe Sicilian-style pizza. Whatever Detroit-style pizza is, I hope this isn't it. Service was painfully slow. Two guys behind the counter, one of whom spent 10+ minutes "reheating" my slice while the other guy fiddled with his phone. Caught the attention of Phone Fiddler Guy and asked if I could pay to speed things up a bit (two people had since arrived and had yet to be waited on) and he was like, "Nah, I'm good", as in, "I may work here, but I do my best to make it look like I don't.” I get it, it's just a pizza place, but whoever owns this place puts minimal effort in trying to keep the lights (or the pizza oven) on. Friendly suggestions to the owners: 1) Put cheese on your slices, 2) Heat up your slices until they’re at least warm, and 3) Clean up your eating areas (table and counter were filthy)

Forget searching for the perfect slice and just go here. This deep(ish) dish pizza is what you want. They throw it in the oven while you wait, so the cheese and the edges get deliciously crispy! Keep in mind I went there after a night out, but that's when you want to eat pizza, right?!

We have a lot of legendary pizzerias in every borough of the City. There's big time pizza in Little Italy, Bklyn and Queens. Even up in the Bronx there's killer pizza. The guys at Lions & Tigers & Squares however, in a small place on 23rd, really stand out. I've only been there a few times, but I've never been disappointed. Its Detroit pizza at its best. They have really interesting and unusual options .On the last visit a few days ago, I had their vodka pizza, which was so good. I've become something of a fan and no doubt I'll continue to stop by to get my occasional fix. I do wish they had more of a proper indoor seating area though, but perhaps in the future they'll expand. In the meantime seating is limited to a few small tables outside. Most people get things to go, anyway. If you're in the area and looking for a slice (or square in this case), then you should definitely check out these guys. If you love pizza, then I'm sure you'll love this place.

Always hit NYC for a slice of New York style pie. This visit we went off piste and tried a Detroit style pie. This was very authentic with all the texture and taste of a Buddy's Detroit style deep dish square pie.

Came to find this place after watching a video on Facebook while on holiday and was not disappointed. We had pepperoni pizza and it was amazing!

I love many styles of pizza and NY is my favorite place to explore pizza. LT&S is worth a stop if you are in NYC. I often say you can get anything in The City. It's true. I had heard you could get Detroit style pizza in Brooklyn but haven't made the trip. Today, I am happy to report Detroit style square pizza is available in Chelsea, courtesy of the locally famous Artichoke Pizza partners (Artichoke is even in Terminal C at LGA). This is a takeaway shop, although you can eat the pizza there. $5 for the Classic with 4 slices is a deal. $11 or $12 for the others is respectable. We enjoyed the bountiful pepperoni and the portabello mushroom with vodka sauce. A one time bar owner, "Buddy", invented the Detroit style. He is now a legend. Like the geography, this pizza is between NY & Chicago. The claim to fame is the Wisconsin "brick" cheese melted against the sides of a square "bolt" pan from an auto assembly line producing a beautiful crispy, buttery side crust. It is great, you almost think you are at Buddy's or Shields but no Vernor's Ginger Ale yet. Rashaad, the manager(?) Is a gem and has embraced the style. Watch for his own version. The name is clever but if you envoke sports teams of Detroit you must include the Wings. So add Wings and get your 5th star!

We are not the biggest fans of pizza... but there's something about the Lion's and Tigers and Squares Detroit Pizza that makes you want to lick your fingers and smack your lips. We ordered two vegetarian pizzas : The broccoli and yellow cheese pizza ; and the tomato, mushroom one and both lived up to the expectations that Google Reviews had mentioned. Extremely filling, the square pizzas are a meal in themselves. Oozing with cheese, they will be a cheese-lover's delight ! Hot and straight from the oven, these sizzling babies will have make you come for more !

I was walking by this pizza place & thought I'd grab a bite. The service was quick and pleasant. The quality was just average.

It's not your ordinary NY pizza - in a good way! Their Detroit-style pizza is crispy, cheesy, and has a nice layer of delicious tomato sauce on top. Prices seem steep at first, but you're getting a personal pizza, not just a slice. Each pizza has 4 separate slices, so you can easily split one between two people. Thrilled to have this place in the neighborhood.

Just returned from New York and this pizza place is one of the only food experiences I bother talking about. It was our last food stop after discovering it on day 2 and we couldn’t wait to return after so many poor food choices made during our trip elsewhere. The CRUST on this pizza is so good. I mean, come on - who compliments the crust?! That’s how good it was. Crispy half charred and just tasty. Anyway. The MAIN pizza itself was incredible and I am usually a thin crust only type of person. This thick cheesy deliciousness hit different though. I had a whole Pie (two slices) of the olive pizza and a slice (half the tray/pie) of pepperoni. My partner has a sausage one ( I tried a bit and it was yummy) and he had another meaty one (I forgot the flavour) but we both fell in love with all of it. The prices were so reasonable, cheap by NYC’s overpriced standards and the pizza delicious. By far the best, most underrated pizza joint in NYC. Forget the hyped up places and go here instead.

My husband and I went last night looking for the best pizza in our neighborhood. He is not easy to please when it comes to pizza, but Lions & Tigers & Squares did not dissapoint! The pizza is a delicious thick, crispy edge pie. We had the vodka, classic and pepperoni and they were all delicious (my favorite is the vodka). Come have great food at a place with an easy classic vibe of what a great pizzeria should be! Simple to order, good prices, great music, cozy old school lighting (non of that white neon light bs) and smiley wonderful people. Dont miss out. M&D

I have been coming to Lions & Tigers & Squares since its opening a few years ago and have to say that the pizza is the best. I love the Detroit style pizza as it reminds me of college but I love the way they bake the cheese and the sauce right into the crust. I had a sausage slice that was reasonable at $7.00 and it was delicious. The sauce is so flavorful and the is loaded with cheese. The consistency is pillowy and the sausage is sweet and spicy at the same time. Each bite has a nice crunch to it. I highly recommend it.

Stopped in here for a quick couple of slices on a recent weekend in NYC. We are already familiar with Detroit style and love it. This is like Detroit style on steroids though. You can't even see the slice under all the pepperoni on the pepperoni pies. The edges are perfectly charred and really tasty, rest of crust is soft and chewy. Why the four stars? We were there on a really cold evening and there is no inside eating at all. It is difficult to maneuver the slices with frozen fingers. Also, slices are a bit pricey. This is a really good Detroit pie though.

I grew up eating Buddy’s and Shields pizza in Detroit. My dad’s office was across from Louie’s, visited many times when we visited him at work. I’ve been visiting Detroit style pizza places all over the country - Austin, Denver, Las Vegas, Orange County, California, etc. This place ranked dead last. I was very bummed, especially after taking it up (as a pizza style) to my NYC resident daughter. Big disappointment.

Me and my friend were walking past this place after brunch and she forced us to get some of this amazing pizza from being here previously. Staff were super friendly, helpful and genuinely delightful. We got the vodka sauce pizza which was delish!

Ate here with friends on Friday. Kind of a funky ordering system which wasn't clear. Make sure the guy putting pizzas in the oven hears your order as it is not communicated to him. Crust was bread likr and frankly not really Detroit Style Pizza, an internationally recognized style. Bread crust was too dense, and edges weren't really crispy. Sauce was very tasty. Pepperoni was plentiful and tasty. Overall an ok pizza but was disappointed.

Excellent cheap meal with options Basic menu. Ate there twice on my trip. Looking forward to eating there again! Great alternative pizza

Great pizza served in a unique way. A whole pie is a little rectangle cut into four squares, and put in a little bakery style box. Had the traditional and pepperoni, amazing pizza by the guys from Artichoke pizza.

Detroit pizza is a version of Sicilian pizza but different in that the pizza is baked in a square with the cheese baked in the crust to caramelize it. This is my second trip (and not my last) to Lion, Tigers and Squares and the pizza here is consistently good. The price tag for a pizza was a little high ($10,00) but you get a pizza that is worth it. The Sausage pizza is loaded with sausage and chopped sweet onions and then they drizzle a little maple syrup on top to add to the flavor. The place has caught on because it was mobbed and the last time I was there they had just a few customers. Word is getting out.

Yes, I ate Detroit-style pizza in New York ... I know. This pizza drew us in off the sidewalk, though, with its delicious aroma and we were not disappointed by the taste. Tried both the mushroom and the pepperoni (separate pizzas) and each was very good. The menu is limited and you cannot create your own combination of toppings, but that's OK. One pizza probably is enough for two people, or one very hungry person. Very reasonable prices. Fast service. No seats. Close to the Gotham Comedy Club.

I was walking to the High Line and passed by this place. It looked interesting so I decided to give it a try. I got a pepperoni pizza and it was amazing. I love this style of pizza so much. If you’re in the area and love pizza this place is a must. I will be back...probably many times.

Until fairly recently Detroit Pizza was a style only known to those who’d visited The Motor City and serious Pizza-heads, but the age of social media and culinary-cross-pollination has seen a rise in popularity of the cheesy square with New York’s Lions & Tigers & Squares going all-in and offering nothing else as posters of Barry Sanders and Axel Foley keep watch. Owned by Francis Garcia of New York’s Artichoke Basille's, a polarizing Pizzeria that has nonetheless managed to expand outside of Manhattan and even to Florida, Lions & Tigers & Squares opened mid-2018 with the sole intention of perfecting the buttered-pan and at just $5 for four Cheese slices Manhattanites quickly bought in with lines at the Chelsea shop growing each day. Selling only full-pans, but doing so at a fair price and with unique toppings including Mustard, it was at a cost of $11 that one Pepperoni Pie was loaded into cardboard, visual analysis clearly showing Sauce atop Mozzarella and then rounded Cups with the base quite crispy, though given the shop’s “do one thing” focus more rise would have been nice and likely could be achieved by longer leavening.

Got a Vodka Slice and a Jalapeño, Pepperoni, Sausage slice - it was proper; I'm not really a deep dish fan but if I was this place fits that bill. More importantly this place reps Detroit! Hopefully they get some TVs going here and make this a home game place for Lions Games. If they start serving wings and beers along with showing the Lions they will have a very loyal customer base.

Having gone to school in Michigan and living outside the Detroit area for five years I have had this type of pizza in the past and have not eaten it in almost thirty years. It is good to see that someone finally brought it back East especially near where I work. Detroit pizza is a cross between Sicilian and Forcchia bread with the cheese baked on the dough and the sauce on the top. It give the edges a real crispy feel and a nice charred flavor as the cheese is baked into the sides of the pizza. It was delicious and the personal pizza was $5.00 which was a steal as the pizza was four slices. It made a filling lunch. The service was very personable and the people working the counter could not have been nicer to me. It is a real find.

I might otherwise laugh out loud about the glowing reviews here. BUT for the fact that when you try a new spot like we did for delivery, and the pizza is below horrible, it is truly a disappointment. First, the pizza is NOT large despite misrepresentative photos online - it is small personal size pizza - that's why it's $11- $14. It comes as a small rectangle that you must cut yourself. So, do not think you are ordering a standard size pizza pie. Second, the "pizza" - I use that term loosely, in the sense that Dominos is also a pizza place, is horrible. This pizza is basically what one might find in a fast food establishment. The oddly glowing reviews are disturbing, as are the pictures. Think twice before placing an order if you are looking for a traditional, substantial pizza to satisfy a pizza night. And if you make a mistake like we did, be sure to write a review!

My neighbor in L.A. introduced me to Detroit style pie, so I was wanting to try this spot on my recent return to NYC. It's popular, especially late at night, but worth the wait. I tried the famous mashed potato pie: corned beef, sauerkraut, spicy mustard and a baked mashed potato topping. Oh my! And the sausage was just as delicious. Pieces are huge. I took the leftovers to friends on Long Island the next day and they were delighted to try this kind of pizza (shest Sicilian American). I'll be sure to return next trip.

The first time we’ve tried a pie pizza! We chose the classic one and we simply loved it! Any time you travel to NY and want to have a great pizza, visit the Detroit Pizza!!

Detroit style pizza is basically similar to Pizza Hut pan pizza. It's a medium thickness crust between New York style thin and Silician thick crust. This pizza is overall very good and better than Pizza Hut for sure. We had a mushroom and sausage slice. The mushroom contained fresh mushrooms and is a white pizza. The sausage pizza had good quality and tasty sauasge and was a white pizza. Service was friendly and quick. Both pizzas were generally above average, tasty and great crust. The only problem is both slices were too greasy. This pizza is overly greasy and is what kept it from being a great 5 star slice. If they cut back on the grease factor, it would be a 5 star pizza.

Is a magical experience, I see this square pizza on IG and immediately i said “i have to taste that” ... I think in a pizzeria but not, is a very tiny place with an Amazing service giving you the BEST PEPPERONI pizza I ever taste, just the correct amount of A LOT of pepperoni!!!! Is a place to stop-eat-and go!!!

Walk up store front deep dish pizza in Chelsea. One pie (square) is four large pieces. Toppings are fresh and generous. Drinks from a frig. No sit down seating, just stand at small round tables that are under cover but open to elements. Can be crowded. Affordable for NYC and delicious!!!

The food was delicious and the owner is very nice. It’s in a good location and was not expensive. I highly recommend this place.

I've been wanting to try this place for a while and finally decided to make the trek to Chelsea one Saturday evening. There are a few standing tables. I'm not sure how crowded it normally gets but we were able to nab one. Pizzas are only available by the pie, but it's perfect for two people because this is only four squares. We ordered the sausage pie ($12). The sausage was fine - nothing too special. I appreciated that they didn't skimp on it. But the best part of the pizza was the crust. Now, I normally don't care for crusts but this was not your typical crust. I think they push the pizza right up to the edge of the pan, and then glaze the outer edges with honey (or crack). I guess you'll find me in Chelsea more often. I now feel obligated to try all of their pies, and I'm not mad at that.

I been to many pizza places living in NYC but this one with Detroit style pizza os to kill for. The flavor is awesome. I have tried the classic and muchroom pizza..much flavors. No slices here...must buy the squares which is 4 pieces.

The register was on his phone the whole time, which I don’t really have too much of a problem… Until he over-charged me! It was 17 dollars for 1 single slice! When I brought it up, the guy try to intimidate me into paying. Anyways, good pizza but not gonna go back.

Pizza dough too thick, too salty, too many tomatoes. Well, too much of everything. Too bad because otherwise not too much. Bad . They are too stuffy

This is my third time to Lions & Tigers & Squares and I had their pepperoni pizza which is loaded with a layer of thick cut pepperoni that is baked into the pie. It was delicious. You had a layer with every bite. The pizza here is always fresh because they sell through them so fast and the traffic in the restaurant is large and there are people always around. There are no tables so you have to snag one of the cocktail tables. The service is very friendly and quick.

Detroit pizza was news to me, but attracted by the Motown music, which always sounds good, we stopped in. And the pizza is so good too ! Square pizzas, the perfect size to split with a friend- In the summer the door are open and you can eat at the standing table as you watch the world go by. In the winter its a small cozy space.

I always wanted to try Detroit-styled pizza, but I was nervous to venture out into Detroit when I was there back in 2017. I passed by this restaurant two (2) weeks ago by happenstance, but I was unable to eat at this restaurant at that time. This restaurant seemed to be designed for takeout or for a person to eat his or her pizza while a person stood up with the usage of a long shelf as a table. These pizzas were present behind some glass, and the server heated them up once a person made an order. This server was friendly, and there were many choices of pizzas to select. There were also a variety of condiments on the side. I tried the whole pie of the classic pizza, and it cost just over fourteen dollars ($14.00) after tax was added. A person could pay by cash or by credit. I felt that this pizza price was not cheap, but the pizza was delicious. The whole pie was very filling. A slice was a half (1/2) of a pie, and this server divided a pie into fours (4s) and a slice into twos (2s).
Best pizza in NYC
It’s ironic that my favorite pizza in all of NYC is Detroit style, but it’s true. I don’t usually like thick crust, but it’s perfect in this one. A definite must try, I now go out of my to have it when I’m in the city.
