I’ve been here twice now. Let’s talk about the food: To start, the service is excellent. No complaints whatsoever about the lovely staff. The atmosphere and music are also excellent. However, I felt like the food was a bit mid for the price. Here are my ratings: Fried scallion and shrimp dumplings: meh Steamed vegetable dumplings: good Calamari: Bad Oysters on the half shell: overall good but did find a few shells and rocks in there which tells me they didn’t clean/shuck properly (whatever the terminology is) Charred octopus: Octopus had quite a fishy flavor. Didn’t like too much. Have tasted much better for a cheaper price. Forced myself to eat half before i stopped. Totally not worth it 😢. Burger and fries: it was a good burger and good fries but again, for the price point, i had higher expectation. i honestly prefer a burger at shake shack than this.

Shortly after opening it was well filled at the bar of friends to restaurant staff. Even in this tough competition, I got the opportunity to quietly peek through the menu.Chinese and Portuguese cuisine, the possibilities of this combination is probably minimal even in New York. But now I was here for an espresso and rum and something sweet addition. But the big attraction is the dining room feels. Looks like some exotic foreign correspondents’ club, with slowly rotating ceiling fans, and a caged catwalk balcony overflowing with antique roulette wheels, trunks and other port-of-call knickknacks.Alert bar staff despite many acquaintances in the audience.

We started with 3 orders of small plates and all were delicious. Thus, we ordered 3 more which were also very good. Favorite was the octopus, though the dumplings were delicious.

Very good food, very friendly and attentive staff. My wife and I stumbled upon this restaurant. We were in the area, never heard of it before and decided to check it out. We had a good time here.

Cool restaurant with great atmosphere. The food was wonderful, very different from anything we had tried before. Solar to good Chinese but with a twist. The service was efficient, friendly and keen to explain about their menu. Try to leave space for dessert!

awesome staff! good cocktails. try the steam dumpling, african chicken and the fried rice. every weekend there is nice party at the basement.

There was a private party upstairs so we had to sit downstairs - the vibe was very hip/bohemian. We ordered the eggplant curry, boneless short ribs, ants on a log, ham steak, truffle croquettes, steamed dumplings all to share - everything was amazingly delicious!!! The cocktails were also great. We splurged and got the homemade donuts for dessert - more like choux's than donuts, but they were amazing! I'd definitely recommend this restaurant for anyone looking for an authentic NYC experience - great food, great atmosphere, kind of on the pricey side, but its worth it!

Do not go here! The doorman is one of the worst human beings you will ever meet, as obnoxious as a person can possibly be. Once inside, the temperature in the restaurant was incredibly warm. Unhappy diners were making their displeasure known, with any impact on anyone who worked there. Avoid this dump at all costs.

This trendy little find was located just minutes from how are hotel. They had a great selection of house cocktails as well as unique tasty culinary preparations. Staff was friendly and attentive. The lighting was however a bit too down in the seats were uncomfortable. However, the overall dining experience was well above average and I would certainly come back.

Went here for dinner one night after reading good reviews. First of all, restaurant is very loud and very dark. The decor is cool and menu is good. Drinks were the best part, the cocktails were great. Food was very nice but not amazing or how it should be for that price. Unfortunately, there was a miscommunication within our party about the check and I left about 8% tip not realising my friend didn’t have enough to cover what we had agreed on as being 15% to reflect the service. While the female server was initially friendly, she left us without drinks for long periods of time. When my friend handed the cash over, the server became extremely aggressive and blocked her way demanding at least 20% because she stated the restaurant doesn’t pay her at all and she relies solely on tips. The waitress then demanded that my friend go and get more money out of the ATM for her. The best of it is once my friend realised what had happened she was coming to find me to ask for extra cash to take back, not being accustomed to this country she didn’t realise that it’s not okay for servers to confront customers like that. When I heard what happened, I refused to go back with any money. Retrospectively, I wish we’d left nothing for her. Hopefully management will see this and be able to discuss appropriate behaviour with her as it’s a shame for one staff member to ruin a restaurant’s reputation.

This place is a rare find, mixing Portuguese and Chinese cuisine and culture in a way you wouldn't find anywhere outside of Macau 50 years ago. They haven't spared anything in their authentic design of the restaurant creating a very intimate and inviting space for socializing. The menu is unique and flavorful and best to order family style. It's one of the few places you can enjoy both style and substance and I hope they keep it up.

We went here recently with a group of 7 and had a great time. The veggie noodles and mushroom truffle croquettes were so delicious! We should have ordered more! Service was nice - atmosphere was great. Loved it!

I spent an evening at the bar in this beautiful, bohemian place. Great service, with very skillful bartenders. The small dishes I tried, were all very tasteful. Absolute worth a visit!

Easier to go thru non-descript, gray, bar-window, heavy "factory" doors, when you know there's a restaurant on other side. LOL. TriBeCa after all. Greeted by friendly bartender whom directed us to equally friendly host. Lighting is bit too dim, but great collection of color bottles, baskets, wrought iron, trading-post decor. Our waitress Adhali was very kind and perfectly attentive. (I was apprehensive about staff due to some negative reviews, but they're all great.) Her suggestions were en pointe with ref to MTC's history. My 17-yr-old son was very happy when she offered to fillet his fried whole fish which was delicious. African chicken with peanut curry sauce was also excellent. Came here for Malasada (Portugese donut) specifically but not as good as ones in Hawaii. My kid said that great waitress & staff made up for slight disappointment. We saw a fun bar scene. Highly recommend.

Having been to Macao and lived in Hong Kong for many years, we enjoyed the decor and ambiance of the restaurant a lot. The food ranged from average to very good. We loved the lobster noodles and the chicken and pork belly dumplings. The coconut black rice was also really good. The lamb shank and fried rice were average. What would have made this restaurant excellent in our opinion was more traditional food from Macao (I was super surprised that there were no Portuguese egg tarts on the menu!) and attentive service. We had to chase down our server several times. Still - worth a visit and very good overall.

My friend book a table for us. The dining room was dusky almost as same as Pio Pio last night. Nice fusion of Portuguese and Asian cuisine, and nice decor, but the atmosphere was a little loud. We ordered Charred Octopus Escabeche, Mushroom & Truffle Croquettes, Hakka Noodles, and grilled vegetables. Everything was good taste and we enjoyed the dinner.

My husband and I had booked a table at Macao for Nov 12th. As we approached the restaurant I stopped to finish a phone call before entering. Outside there were a few staff members smoking; when they finished one flicked their cigarette towards my husband. It missed him by cm's. My husband said' excuse me!' and the staff member smirked and walked back into the restaurant. Intentional or not an apology would be the least you would expect. I went into the restaurant to speak to someone but the desk was unmanned and the bar was busy. I waited for a good 5 minutes and nobody approached me. Incidentally the staff member was waiting tables and had not washed their hands after the cigarette; I had my eyes on them the whole time. I went onto Onion Ring and cancelled my booking myself. Few things - it might be standard in NY for staff members to smoke out the front of their restaurant but it is disgusting and really off putting for customers. If they do have to do this they should at least dispose of their cigarettes in a proper manner; flicking them intentional or not is not on. Finally - wash your hands!!!! Disgusting. The whole episode really put me off Macao and I won't be going here again.

I tried several dishes, all of them were very tasty. Atmosphere is more for like after office kind of place, more than a family restaurant. Food is great, prices are fair. Service is good. I would certainly recommend this place.

The design and ambience of this place really brings you to the noisy and a bit back in time Macao. The menu includes various seafoods fusion with Asian spice. Portions are pretty big that is common for USA, but the food tastes really delicious. We loved the wine, quick and helpful service, they haven't forgot us for a second. This is perfect for one of those evenings when you want something new. We tried their cod and mushrooms with truffle rolls, octopus for appetizers and noodles with lobster and muscles for main meals. Everything was delicious, especially mushroom and truffle crockets and muscles. Definitely recommend and will come back .

Food, service, music, room, everything was great. Loved the duplings. Top of the list so far in this ground food trip in nyc. A must in TriBeCa. Love you.

The place was very dark. I can barely see my food. The music was very loud, it's impossible to speak. The food was very expensive but average.I was expecting much better. I don't understand why it's so popular.

I highly recommend Macao for dinner, but also for drinks. If you sit at the bar and get a chance to see Alejandro, he is friendly and a very skilled bartender. While you can order drinks off the menu they also can make their own concoctions if you ask. Plus, the Malasadas dessert are delicious! It is also very close to the subway stop and the decor is fantastic, you feel like you are in another place. I returned about 3 additional times and wouldn't dare skip going there on a trip to NYC!

I went yesterday with 2 friends of mine and from the entrance you see a fantastic-retro-jungle decor. Gabe and Ivan are 2 of the best Bartenders of Nyc. Well done.

Macao was recommended by our concierge at The Roxy. We are so glad he recommended it. We enjoyed unique cocktails including the Bashful Maiden, which had a fresh gin/ melon flavor. The Shishito peppers were delicious and the bacon and shrimp fried rice was beyond amazing. My husband and I split the African chicken and it was deliciously marinated in coconut milk and spices. They service was impeccable. There was a very cool vibe, & great music. They don’t try too hard like some restaurants to be cool and trendy. They focus on the food, good service and they deliver! I definitely recommend this place! We showed up early for our reservation but they were very kind to accommodate us quickly.

The old school Asian decor hits you as soon as you walk in, first at the classic bar and then in the restaurant itself. The cocktail menu has standard regulars and then quite a few of their own concoctions (which I think they update regularly). The food menu is a fusion of east and west. Highly recommend the mushroom truffle croquettes and the lobster noodles- we tend to order them both every time we visit. Great spot for dates and also small groups. Probably been here 10 times and it always delivers.

What a delightful place to be. The band was playing amazing 30's and 40's music and some contemporary music with an old twist. The menu is lovely with great choices. We had to re order the ribs three times because of their sumptuousness!!! The service was great and the staff extremely attentive. Great ambience. Great place!!

This place was recommended by a colleague. The service was very friendly. The food was okay, nothing special. We had the branzino and steamed fish it was good but not great. Not likely to return.

Had some friends from out of town that wanted a place with a good vibe, good food but not too loud or hectic so we could catch up. Macao is exactly that... and more! It was a Tuesday night, so the place wasn't as crowded as Thursdays or Fridays, which was perfect. You could totally feel the whole vibe of the place, as if you were in a hidden speakeasy... well-lit, good music but not loud, see everyone just enjoying themselves and deeply involved in conversations, instead of the usual hectic pace of a crowded restaurant... servers with trays walking back and forth, loud noise... Good cocktails are their specialty, both Macao and their sister bar Employees Only have consistently been in my top 10 Bars in NYC. Whatever you order, they can make, and make it GOOD! I had a Mezcal Negroni and it definitely did not disappoint. It was 4 of us on the table and we ordered sufficient food. Every dish was better than the other. Their dumplings are a must, my favorites being maybe the chicken and pork. Kale salad was a good addition to balance the food. The star of the night was their African Chicken (Peri-Peri). Just DELICIOUS! Their Lobster Noodles was not bad either and we accompanied them with fried rice and bok choy. Even the Jasmine Tea was better than average. What makes Macao a classic is that it sets the perfect environment for whatever your desire is... a romantic date, an evening with friends, a business dinner, a family celebration...

I lived in Hong Kong for 8 years and visited Macao about 30 times. There is nothing about the menu that evokes Macao. That's OK but the service was about as bad as it can get. Our server was drinking in full view and ignored us after taking our initial order. That's would have been understandable at 11 pm but but it was about 8:30 pm. The bus men were great and almost made up for her drinking problem. The manager did comp us on two desserts because he recognized the problem which was appreciated. Food was OK but expensive. The $110 Taipa Steamboat "for the table" was essentially a paella with Thai rice flavored with green curry. Should have been no more than $50 even in New York.

Old style decor with dim light and good food. Ordered crab cakes which was excellent ( must try ) , and dumpling were also good . Drinks are a bit expensive but service was excellent . Would recommend to try out this restaurant . Make reservation on weekends .

Having lived in Macao for 10 years and seen the change from Old Portuguese / Macanese to China meets Las Vegas it was a pleasant surprise to see a restaurant with Macanese favourites and new twists. We visited New York last weekend and thought this restaurant would bring back happy memories ... there was certainly a Macao vibe and we enjoyed this unique little restaurant. The food was good - although not entirely authentic but that was the modern twist. We shared a few dishes family style The environment was great - reminded us of the old opium houses with upscale touches and the service was excellent well worth a visit to experience a piece of the Orient in NYC

You will not be disappointed with this restaurant. Even though it is almost always crowded, the service was prompt and courteous. Our water glasses were constantly replenished. I would definitely come back here again. The food was fantastic. We were thrilled with almost everything we ordered. The cocktails however were not that exciting but we just tried the Mah-Johng and the Bashful maiden. . The octopus appetizer also was rather small.

If you are looking for great food and a lovely ambiance, head over to Macao Trading Co. The food is a fusion of what you would find in Hong Kong and Portugal. The ingredients are fresh and prepared with are and the service is excellent. I tagged along with my husband who goes there every time he is in town and I now know why. If you are in that neighborhood (between Tribeca and Greenwich) I recommend you stob by. The cocktails are also Excellent!

We went to make up for a very dry spot we were. And what a spot this was. Incredible drinks and after 11pm the bites are wicked at the bar. Loved it

This place is fun with great food and bev. The crowd does get a bit crowded st night, right before the DJ comes on, so it does get quite noisy. Good for groups, not for dates really.

Found on the Internet, Macao Trading Co was a great surprise. We needed to book, as the restaurant gets very busy. We had a lovely little table at the back so we could see all the activity. Dishes are served to be shared, which we love, and everything was well flavoured, subtle and delicious. The lobster was amazing. Wine was reasonably priced. The service was flawless. We loved it all.

Loved the ambiance. Decent food, great cocktails. The basement is totally happening on weekends. Definitely worth the trip.

Took a chance and had dinner with my fiancé last night. Service on point. Drinks while pricey are delicious and crafted with care and attention- down to the ice- so completely worth it. For dinner we shared everything; shishito pepper appetizer along with the chicken dumplings (sublime). For dinner the lobster noodles (a must) and steak. The donuts for dessert were good but not unbelievable... But certainly a fun way to end the meal. After dinner there was a dj in the basement lounge spinning 80s and current pop hits- we had a blast!!!

an eclectic high energy restaurant and bar, loud but with good food, interesting cocktails, lots of chinese kamasutra type images on the walls(especially as you go into the private party space downstairs). appetizers are great, the music is good and the bartenders quite friendly.

Wonderful ambience, wonderful food!! Spent the most amazing NYE here! Definitely recommend! Easy to get to from the subway, awesome bar men! Impossible to leave without a smile :)

Macao TC is a destination type of restaurant. The bartenders were professional and entertaining even if you don't order a drink. Fun to watch. The appetizers were inventive and delicious, entrees the same-I had the prawns and we shared the forbidden rice (great). My husband had the dish with "ants" in the name and thought it was very tasty. Afterwards, we headed downstairs where there is another bar with Yvan holding court. We went below to meet up with some friends of my son's but it was quite interesting to see the younger crowd--who were quite loud by the way. Probably too much for most our age (65) But the fun of the whole place gave it a highlight type of feel. It definitely gave us a close-up view of that generation's culture. Another friend who had taken friends there last year said it was the highlight of their NYC trip--to eat at Macao.

The lobster noodles were incredible. You actually get a whole two lobster tails. I highly recommend. I went here for my birthday and there was a large group of us so we were seated downstairs. The only reason o didn't give a 5 star rating was because where we were seated downstairs was too dark to even see a menu. If you go, ask to be seated upstairs.

I loved Macao. The restaurant is dim lit with candles and very cosy. There are a lot of staff so the service was always quick. The cocktails on offer looked amazing but I stuck with water. My glass was filled to the top every time it got half way without me having to even ask. The servers were extremely helpful and knew the menu inside out. The food was amazing, I went with the Hakka noodles and vegetable dumplings. My family got the African chicken and lamb shank and agreed it was all cooked to perfection and very well presented. The one flaw was the limited choice for vegetarians. There was only one main out of 7/8 and a couple of starters.

Can't wait to return. The service was warm and prompt. The FOOD is some of the best in NYC. We had a large party of 9 and ordered many different items. Everyone at the table (of mostly women) raved about the unique flavor and perfectly prepared menu items. The wine list is extensive so it is attractive to different budgets. Unique cocktails were purchased and enjoyed. The décor of the restaurant is so unique that the atmosphere exudes relaxation and a fun evening. Consider this restaurant if you want to experience dining at a different level without the $$$$$. Having such fresh items on the menu - each dish is expertly prepared just for you! YUMMY!

Came in a large work group with clients. Food was great: diverse, unique, spicy, and fun. Never been to Macau, but seemed like a fun throwback atmosphere. There was a live band, and they were great, fun zoot suits and whatnot. And, they brought a burlesque dancer! So exciting! And then she took her clothes off in the middle of the restaurant and all my work colleagues freaked out. Lol! BUT, otherwise, great place. Reasonable prices. Needs better air conditioning - it was as hot as Macau in there!

We literally walked past three times before finding the entrance. What looks like a doorway to a private residence or business, hides a buzzing little joint with excellent food. As there was just myself and my brother we chose to sit at the bar, but the tables looked nice too. Often with places like this, the emphasis is on cool with snooty staff, however both the food and service were amazing. We ordered more than we needed because (a) our eyes were bigger than our bellies and (b) everything on the menu looked great. Unable to finish it all, they offered our leftovers in a doggy bag, unprompted. I will definitely go back here, next time I'm in NYC.

I enjoyed coming to this place and definitely I will return. The ambiance is nice, Daniel was on point and very helpful. I wish I remembered his assistant name, very kind guy Pablo or something like that. Menu not a lot to choose from, but everything was cooked with lots of flavor. The mussels a must try. I loved everything about this place!

We were in New York for 5 nights, staying just round the corner. The hotel recommended this as a great bar and indeed it was! Also a restaurant though we didn't eat there (food looked good though). Really lively and popular, with attentive bar staff and a really good feel about the place. Some interesting and different cocktails .

The 5 of us had a reservation at this place looking forward to catching up with friends. Initial disappointment came when they seated 5 of us around a table that is narrow for 4. I ended up sitting at the edge of a bench while looking at empty tables across from the dining room. Most of us had lamb shank for dinner, which was cooked to perfection and falling off the bone but had very little seasoning. As the dinner went on, the restaurant slowly turned to a club and the increasingly loud music preventing us from talking to each other. We therefore sped up trying to finish up in an attempt to go somewhere else to talk. After several failed attempts to get the waitress attention she finally came with the bill. Another 10 mins and she returned to collect our cards. After that she didn't return for 15 mins only to apologize to us saying that their system is down amd she cannot process our payment. We had to wait for another 20mins until i finally lost it and told her that she should write down our card information and give us our cards back. In the end we were all so miserable that noone felt like going for a drink. My advice - avoid.....not worth the effort

The evening started with great cocktails and appetizers at the bar and then progressed to amazing Asian fusion food of the highest standard. The fish, chicken, noodles, green beans were all excellent. The cocktails kept flowing with attentive and quietly efficient service. Not my first visit and I will return.

We had several items on the menu not knowing what to expect. The food was scrumptious! I started my pre meal activities with a Dr. Funk tall drink and the ginger beer got my palate tuned to dig in. The kale salad was one of the best I had to date. There was the right amount of dressing to keep the kale crunchy and not dry and flecks of potato chips and saltiness to balance out the flavor. The pork belly dumplings were plump and savory. I had the pork chop with collards & pork belly sausage and my entree was seasoned perfectly. The pork chop was a thicker cut of meat that was extremely tender and cooked to a nice temp without any part undercooked. Bravo! My daughter had the bacon & shrimp fried rice and spicy noodles. She is hard to please and ate all her food and sampled mine. Great ambience and music. I am glad we stopped by during our NYC visit!

I've been to Macao Trading Company at least 20 times with my husband, friends, clients and colleagues. I have always had a great experience. The cocktails and food are world-class, and the service and ambiance is awesome. My preference is to sit at the bar with 2-3 people as the bartenders are so charming and it's fun to watch them make the cocktails - they've mastered speed and precision! Table service is great for larger groups of diners as well. This is a must go if you love Asian-fusion and unique, well made cocktails! As for dining in small groups, the food is delicious and timely, the service tends to be great, and eating at the bar is also a fantastic experience. The bartenders are awesome, attentive and engaging. While I miss head bartender Danilo, who went to Miami to open another Employees Only, the remaining bar staff is also lots of fun, and serves high quality cocktails. For those who don't like loud music during dining, this is not for you. But the playlist is great, and I find it energizing!

This place serves a nice assortment of pan-Portugese colonial cuisine. Our appetizers were Macanese, my entree was Brazilian, and my dining partner's dinner was Afro-portugese. Everything was delicious. The cocktail menu is extensive and inventive, and if you prefer to pick your own poison, their selection of liquors is top-notch. I would definitely be willing to come back here, bring a bunch of friends, and turn it into a great night out.

Crowded and nice atmosphere at the bar by the entrance were we had a glass of wine while waiting for our table. The food was excellent and the overall feeling of the place was great.

My fiancee and I had dinner here on a trip to NYC last weekend and it was fantastic! From the moment you walk in, you can't help but notice the wonderful dark and mysterious ambiance. We loved the sangria and all the food we ordered! We will definitely be back.

Recommended by a hotel concierge, the Macao is decorated like an 'den of iniquity' from the 1930's - a sort of place that Indiana Jones would have been comfortable. Despite it being a 'theme' place, the food is excellent.

Great atmosphere! The food was excellent. I had the pork chop and it was so tasty and juicy! For a side I had the fried rice with bacon and fried egg on top which was so yummy! The have fun, specialty drinks that are great too! I highly recommend for a date or even a group of friends!

Neat ambiance and acclaim clothes this place. I did not really enjoy my "African chicken" and was saddened to find them quite dry. The peanut sauce on the top was delicious but had not penetrated the chicken, and felt like something I could have made an adaptation of at home :(. The beignets/ portuguese donuts were delicious for dessert but you know your dining experience isn't that special when the best item was the donuts. Will not go back.

Dinner for four was wonderful. We tried various food and drinks enjoying everything.Vivid flavors from around the globe.Char Su,Hoi Sin, atomic salad and beautifully done duck and steaks.

While I have never had a proper meal here, this is one of my top picks for a true crafted cocktail. The bartenders here (and at their sister property, Employees Only) take pride in their art. The drinks are all hand-made in front of you, with panache and precision, and are truly worthy of being savored, not simply slopped down. I recommend going early, as both locations tend to fill up quickly and nothing is worse than waiting in line. Make sure to try a seasonal cocktail, the Carioca is tasty and yet still packs a punch!

This place gets packed , no really it gets packed...the drinks are good and expect to pay a good price for one drink....seating is reserved or for dinner....if u just want to get drinks, you will be standing, just like most places in NYC. Bartenders are friendly. It gets loud so be ready to get your voices up .....DJ on Saturday Nights. Random Drunk people talking to you...

Macao trading co is a somewhat hidden spot that does NOT stand out. they have wonderful dishes. must try the truffle croquettes!

Typical urban resturant with live music with an Asian twist ! Amazing cocktails an stunning bar staff !!

everything that was ordered was very good. the whole fish entree amazing. the only complaint was the limited drink/beer choices. will go back for the fish entree however.

I had my birthday dinner here for a party of 8 and it was quite a nice experience! From the outside, you can't tell that the place is even open, but as soon as you walk in you are transported to a beautiful dimly lit sexy restaurant with a really cool vibe. I was expecting a much larger spot (like a Spice Market or a Buddakan) but it was actually quite cozy. The seating though is a bit tight and a few of my guests said that their chairs were super small (I was seated in the booth area). Our waitress was super nice and made a lot of great suggestions. We each ordered our own appetizer and entree but we of course took bites from each other's plates. The food was surprisingly very tasty! Our favorites were the lobster with fresh noodles (think a lighter version of a lobster alfredo with a super buttery and less cheesy sauce), the mushroom and truffle croquettes (these are a must try if you don't hate mushrooms, MUST TRY), the dumplings (I didnt try these, but I heard that they were delish), bacon fried rice (BIG BIG BACON flavor, if you like bacon, you will enjoy this) and the African Chicken (sweet and spicy curry and super moist meat). Outside of that, we also had the chili prawns (very flavorful), bacon buns (not a fan of the ketchup sauce, but it did need a sauce since it would have been dry without, wish they had some hoisin actually), the octopus salad (a bit overdone, not recommended) and the malasadas (tasty churro/funnelcake/beignet type of item.) Since it was my birthday and another guest at our table's birthday, the waitress got us each a free drink and put candles on our malasadas for us :) Prices are pretty reasonable and we all had an amazing time from the vibe, service and food. Highly recommended!

During the course of an evening, I drank or sampled the odd job, mah-jongh, and ciao rizo, among others, each a uniquely crafted specialty cocktail prepared with exquisite attention to detail, down to the careful rubbing of lemon on the side and rim of the glass, assembled with pride by white jacketed professionals. They can make any standard cocktail and have a every kind of liquor available on a beautiful, inviting bar lit with candles. The vibe is warm, exciting, yet comfortable and welcoming. Many beer and wine options as well. Dinner menu is varied and excellent. We loved the charred octopus, mushroom and truffle croquettes, dark chocolate diablo, among others. It's a place to visit again and again, with lots of wonderful drinks and food preparations to enjoy. Have a favorite or try something new!

Our visit to Macao this past Saturday was so fun. The place was interesting. Cool concept - great warehouse style decor. We actually liked the atmosphere. We ordered “mushroom & truffle croquettes”, “chicken & pork belly dumplings steamed”, “ants climbing the tree”( most interesting name, was very spice) and “African chicken” . All was delicious. The drinks were little strange. I had “No name” – never again and “Dr. Funk” was awful. Service was good. Place was very loud.

The menu is very unique and tasty. The appetizers are worth eating as a meal (we had the steamed vegetable dumplings, the chicken & pork belly dumplings and the mushroom & truffle croquettes which are wonderful) The spices (i.e. the african chicken, hoisen BBQ have great spices, and taste to match) . Very worth a trip but the noise can be to loud, especially during happy hour.

Amazing food and service! great design and atmosphere. Hakka Noodles and Fish were delicious. Nice wine selection.

we were walking down the street and came across this restaurant purely by chance . it was just an open doorway, but it looked so cool and interesting that we had to take a look inside.and we are so glad we did. the food was amazing and we loved the atmosphere inside with the low lighting.

Cool place, crowded, recommend reservations and best for smaller parties. I do not recommend for children. Steamed dumplings were very good, lobster dish was very good. Little bit loud but not obnoxious. Expect a small table and to be close to your neighbors...it is normal for NYC. Will return.

I had the WORST experience at Macao yesterday. I waited 30 minutes to order 4 drinks and the bartender with short hair & tattoos just prepared 2 of them and refused to prepare the rest because she thought she already did. When i asked for the rest of my drinks ( which I already paid for), she was ignoring us, being rude & condescending because she probably though we were drunk which wasn’t true. I had to go upstair and fill a complain to get what i paid for. Horrible experience.

My wife and I ate here on our first night in New York and loved the place. It was bit hard to find and we would not have located it if we hadn't been looking for it, but we were glad we did. The wine was great, the bartenders friendly (and generous with the wine), the food was delicious and the cost very reasonable. Highly recommended.

I really enjoyed the food and decor here. Fabulous taste and mix of flavors, great ambiance. The only downside was that upstairs was loud (sitting downstairs recommended) and that they didn’t have my reservation down despite calling earlier that day go make a reservation. I can’t wait to go back next trip to NYC

This restaurant is fabulous. From the drink at the great cocktail bar, to friendly service and lively atmosphere and of course the food. My husband and I visited this restaurant on a Saturday night and had a great meal. I recommend the ribs to start and the pork chop which is huge and delicious! Would definitely recommend

After a tough two days of meetings, this was our groups final destination meal. We were tired and hungry! Service was a little lacking however the food and drink completely made up for it. A lot of people ordered the lobster noodle dish, which I tried and it was delish (a little spicy) and I had the crispy whole fish and I thought it was spectacular (they also fillet it at the table for you - nice touch). It's days later and I'm still thinking about this restaurant...all in a good way.

Unfortunately we were seated in the basement inspite of having a reservation. 5 of us sat at a table meant for 4. Waitstaff was good. Took our orders quickly and the food arrived without much delay. The croquettes were delicious! The lamb shank was interesting, the meat well cooked fell off the bone. It lacked salt to my taste. Adding salt improved the flavor considerably. We then asked for the check. 20 mins later they came to inform us that their system was down. Another 20 mins.. and nothing. People were starting to get upset at other tables and getting ready to leave..asking for credit cards to be returned! We were surprised they didn't have a backup system. Finally they made a note of our card numbers and let us leave. This last part was no fun. People were really fuming as they were leaving. They could have handled this much better.. at least offer a courtesy drink or something to share while they made all the diners wait.

Partner and I took our two 20-something nieces to dinner here last week. My partner has been to Macao, and all four of us have traveled the region (Hong Kong, SE Asia) extensively and so are acquainted with the genre. The food across the board was mediocre and overpriced (and I don't mind paying for good food). Wine list uninspired (a more creative sommelier could have had fun with the Portuguese / Asian theme....). Noise level was deafening even for our nieces. service was indifferent at best. So - it was worth a shot, but given the extraordinary range of culinary experiences available in Manhattan, will look elsewhere for our next 'exotic' food adventure.

Had dinner here Valentine's night as we were looking for a place that wasn't requiring a fixed price menu AND it had to be a short walk from our hotel as the temperatures were near zero, and Macao fit the bill. Really enjoyed the chicken and pork belly dumplings as a starter and the seafood stew made a great entree for two. The Portuguese donuts for dessert were delicious!

Delicious, stylish bar/restaurant offering asian/fusion food. Typical entree is $18 and drinks at $10 so good value. Friendly service, fun, buzzy but convivial atmosphere. Always had great food when visiting. African chicken with boo choi is delicious!

We've been to Macao several times now and enjoy it every time. The cocktails are great (if strong) and the food was very good! I agree that upstairs is better than downstairs but we've actually only been seated upstairs. Bacon Buns and Ants in a Tree were awesome. African chicken a bit lackluster. Loud and dark - so avoid if you're not in to that.

We went to Macao with friends on a Saturday evening. The exotic, colonial Far East atmosphere is there. It is excellent. Very nice bar. The food is fusion, interesting. But the best thing is the atmosphere to my view. Wine was good. Also the service was very good.

Walking into the restaurant was a jarring experience - in a good way. It felt like walking through a time portal that transported you to a different time and place. It set an appropriate backdrop for the food experience, which is described as Portuguese-Chinese. What's not to love? We ordered the mushroom croquette and the charred octopus (granted, I'm trying to eat less octopus given recent findings of their braininess and sensitivity). The croquette was good, the octopus was excellent. You can't go wrong with octopus and hoisin. For entrees, we had noodles with lobster and fried fish. Again, both were very good but I'm partial to lobsters so enjoyed that dish more. We finished the meal with the panna cotta and a donut like dessert (can't remember what it was called) that came with dulce de leche. The panna cotta isn't overly sweet (my preference) but the fried dough of goodness more than made up for it.

Came here for a really early snack before a 1030 dinner last week. Absolutely solid and I cannot wait to try other things on the menu. We split an order of dumplings, half steamed and the other half fried. I was not a fan of the fried as it was definitely not what I was used to. It ended up being deep fried and not pan. The steamed were very good. We also go the Lobster noodles and oh my goodness. I'd come downtown just for that dish. I'd eat it every day if I could. It had an entire tail of lobster sitting on top that was grilled and seemingly, the rest of the lobster was in the noodle. Just a ton of chunks of perfectly cooked lobster through out. The sauce was super spicy and creamy. Cannot say enough about those noodles! For my cocktail (well I ended up getting 3 of them, that's how delish they were) I got the Yellow Fever. Peachy and full of fresh ginger. Fantastic little place.

Good food and atmosphere is pretty cool. The music was good on Friday night and the drinks were really good. Usually drinks are sweet at most places but these were strong and delicious

I visited recently with my girl friend and enjoyed the place immensely. I had the African chicken which was outstanding. The malasadas for desert was also very good and the portion was good to share. Service was prompt and courteous and the decor excellant. Definately recommended this restaurant.

A unique charming restaurant that was recommended by The Roxy Hotel. It was close, just a walk down and over. Perfect. Easy. We had the noodles, black rice and dumplings. Fabulous. Delicious. We will definitely be back to try the other choices on the menu.

We visited this bar on the evening of Sunday 15 July. The bar's excellent interiors were supplemented by the excellent service provided by the Italian barman who supports Roma! We had a very pleasant conversation with him about whisky, travel and soccer. Being a Scot, I was highly impressed by his excellent knowledge of Scotch whisky!

The dim lighting and wood planked walls do give a feel for what one might expect in the real Macao, as an historic hub of commerce and blending of cultures. This is represented in the menu's interesting mix of Asian and Portuguese influences. My chicken piri-piri ("African chicken") included 2 good size half breasts that were moist and tender, with nicely charred skin covered in a smooth peanut curry sauce with nuances of coconut milk and (gentle) piri piri heat. This was served on a bed of asian-style cole slaw, a nice counter to the tastes in the sauce and cool balance for those noting the heat. If you like it hot, I would ask for more piri-piri sauce or tell them when ordering. My partner’s Macanese tiger prawns were nicely done, another decent sized serving with a good depth, though not much heat, chili sauce. The wine list was appropriate for menu options. It was crowded on a Thursday evening with lots of bar scene activity (20-30s crowd), with a noise level to match.

We firstly called in and had a cocktail one evening. Sat at the bar, great cocktails and very friendly bartender. We decided to come back another evening to eat and we're so glad we did. The food was great and so different to what we had already eaten whilst in NYC. The decor is brilliant - you expect Indiana Jones to come out and serve you! Really well done and looks like a drinking den in Macau - which its meant to! The night we chose to eat there was a burlesque evening which was a surprise!! However it was very tastefully done and the cabaret was only on at certain times during the evening. Would certainly recommend this bar/restaurant.

Met someone for cocktails and dinner and enjoyed the variety offered on the menu. It was very laid back with a nice energetic vibe. The food was really good with some up to date inventive dishes and spices. I would return here in a heartbeat.

Food OK -- but nothing really memorable. Service speed - excellent. Entrance - difficult to find from the street (another couple and I walked past the door twice). Seating - comfortable enough. The two main negatives were the noise level, which was so great that normal-voice, quiet conversation was impossible, and the dimness. I dislike having insufficient light to easily read a menu or to see the food when it arrives. If you want to have a quiet meal that you can actually see, give this place a pass.

We love Macao. The food and drinks are excellent and the ambiance and decor are wonderful. We returned because our first experience was great and Macao did not disappoint

Popped in hear across from hotel on a Monday night and a nice 3 piece jazz band playing. Pretty noisy so hard to have a decent conversation but all the locals friendly and the quality of the music good. Big cocktail list and snacks avail. Didn't do the 'downstairs' which apparently goes off later in week and weekends. Good local for the more adventurous.

Came here for a very late dinner (about 11:30), as it was one of the few places in this part of Tribeca that seemed to be still serving dinner. We shared 5 dishes and everything was delicious. The atmosphere was very hip and the service was good. It was a little loud as it was really much more of a bar atmosphere at that point of the evening, but at least the bar is at the front of the restaurant, and you can kind of get away from it, by sitting in the back. It's a bit on the expensive side, but overall I really liked it and would definitely recommend it and come back myself, the next time I'm in NYC.

We tried this gem based on an associate's recommendation. Loved the concept. Food was fantastic. Space was cozy yet loud-vibrant. Service was on top of it, although she seemed distracted every time we asked a question, maybe overwhelmed by the crowd. The Porterhouse Steak was phenomenal and the accompaniment paired with it perfectly. We visited the lower level "Opium Den" but were ready to move on to our next adventure.

Great atmosphere and the drink menu was excellent! The staff was friendly and accommodating considering it was busy and we didn't have a reservation.

OK, I don't write a lot of reviews on TripAdvisor - in fact I've written one in my life and that was a really crappy review of a horrible Chinese place in Scottsadale, Arizona called Hottie's or Lottie's or something (don't ever go there!) - so what I'm saying is you can take this review VERY SERIOUSLY because I'm not one of these plebes who raves about the freakin' Olive Garden, OK? So believe me when I tell you that this is one of the best overall dining experiences I've had in years. Great atmosphere the moment you walk in the door. Cool, hip vibe, and not trying to hard if you know what I mean. I read one review here that criticized the 70's music. Please. It's vintage R & B, and if you can't appreciate that over dinner, you need to get yourself checked out. The service from entrance to exit was impeccable. I mean that. Genuine, well-mannered, amicable, intelligent people who are good at their jobs. Our waiter in particular, Danny, should own his own restaurant one day, or be the CEO of a major corporation, or be Secretary Of State. Whatever, this kid is going places. The cocktail menu hints at fun and inventiveness and the actual cocktails do not fail to deliver on that promise. There's a problem with the menu, however. The problem is you want to order everything on it! In the appetizers department, we THOUGHT really loved the shrimp, but that was because we hadn't tasted the dumplings yet! Killer dumplings. These are to dumplings what Michael Jordan is to basketball. And then we had the Ants Running Up A Hill or whatever the hell it's called which is an excellent dish on its own but when complemented by the Shrimp And Bacon Fried Rice, it'll make you forget about sex. Think about those five words juxtaposed together. Shrimp And Bacon Fried rice. Seriously just think about that for a minute before you read on. This is to rice dishes what Jack The Ripper was to serial killers. We didn't have room for dessert but every dessert item on the menu looked awesome. And I hate dessert. Listen, everyone has a right to their own opinion - unless you don't like this place, in which case you really don't.

Three of our family visited this establishment fir an evening meal on a Monday night. Reasonably busy but seated without a wait. Not an extensive menu but all looked appealing. Extensive cocktail and wine list. We opted to share steamed dumplings and the croquettes followed by the chicken with peanut sauce and pork chop with sides of beans and the bacon and shrimp fried rice. Best food we have had in the first four days of our visit to New York. Jazz styled quartet played during the latter half of the evening. If you like cocktails try the dr funk !!. Just a big thank you also to the wait staff, Very helpful and friendly..

The menu was unusual and pleasantly surprising and tasty. I would certainly go back. A very nice venue.

Portugese chinese fusion restaurant. Ambient atmosphere. Gets a bit loud when the bar is filled later in the evening. The food is quite good

Firstly, I want to say that I always wanted to try this place as it is in my hood and I love Tapas! I am a total foodie. This place was horrific. We ordered lamb meat balls, croquettes and a vegetable dish. The food was so-so BUT served too us " ice cold "which made it inedible. Secondly the attitude of the Manager, Yassine is a complete EMBARRASSMENT. HORRIBLE. NASTY. The waitresses have serious attitude which makes for a terrible dining experience. Asking for some bread was a problem- I was told. " We don't usually do this when we are busy so I guess I will this one time???" Once again served cold bread--sorry but a bill for over $160. We should be able to get bread and water? Every glass of wine we ordered (we ordered several) was priced differently and sized differently (even though we ordered the same sancerre) . There are 101 great restaurants in NYC--so no need to choose this joint.

Good food, good vibe and a nice restaurant. Service was really good and will remember this place for future visits.

A good friend of mine from high school (Rota, Spain- D.G.F. Admirals-1960's) is a master bartender, and was doing a two hour presentation at Macao on the "History of the American Cocktail", to raise money for The Museum of the American Cocktail in New Orleans. We were visiting Manhattan for 5 days to celebrate our 34th wedding anniversary, and Dale invited us to attend his presentation, then afterwards we would visit for the first time in 20 years. The entrance to Macao is obscure and easy to just walk past if you have not been there before. The interior is very dark and old. The bar area is unique and very interesting. The wood tables are very small, but the booth areas will hold 6 people comfortably. The upper wall area is filled with old things (desks, furniture, bikes, dolls, etc..) sitting on shelves that appear to have never been cleaned. We thoroughly enjoyed Dale's presentation, and the service during those two hours was "spot on".The waitresses were very friendly and attentive. Three of the cocktails Dale mentioned were an "Absinthe Frappe", "The Major Bailey", and a "Yuzu Gimlet". The bartenders at Macao prepared these 3 cocktails, which were then served to everyone in attendance. Yummy appetizers were also presented to patrons by wait staff, and were good. Afterwards we enjoyed a 2 hour visit with Dale and his wife, reminiscing about being high school classmates in Spain, and catching up on current "happenings". The cocktails served during the "show" were made of Gin, Pernod, and a few liquors I usually don't drink, so I ordered a Mint Julep and my husband ordered a Bourbon Manhattan. They were perfectly prepared and so good we ordered two more each! The food menu items looked interesting, but we wanted to eat later on that evening (Eataly) for our anniversary, so I cannot comment on the food other than the appetizers, which were great. They also have a wide variety of cocktail options on the menu, actually a much better drink menu than at Sardis! The manager Rizo was very accommodating and friendly, and we enjoyed our afternoon at the Macao Trading Co.

The bartender in the downstairs lounge charged me twice for drinks. When called out for his mistake, he got a major attitude and was the one upset for being called out for the mistake. Slammed a free tequila shot on the table. Just apologize for your honest mistake. Instead, a rude waitress Christina was quick to call security and kick myself and family out for their mistake after we spent $500 for at their business. It’s called taking ownership for your mistake and apologizing. Clearly zero accountability happens at this restaurant. The way my family was treated by the white employees in this establishment was unacceptable. From management to their servers, this place has zero customer service. Absolutely pretentious and horrendous people skills from the top to the bottom. No wonder their servers act with ego and entitlement. Do yourself a favour and spend your money else where. This place isn’t even Asian owned but is called Macao. Make it make sense.

Absolutely fantastic food. The Fish was sooo outstanding. Enjoyed every bite of it. Must visit restaurant. Great vibe. Good cocktails. Service was superb.

Vegetarian Friendly and excellent food and drinks, the waitress was very friendly and accommodating.

Hidden away (you could easily miss it) behind the Roxy is the Macao Trading Co. I was recommended this place by one of the staff at The Roxy Tribeca hotel and she was commended for her choice. This bar / restaurant is a wonderful place and set in an old building with high ceilings. The food is classic Asian with a New York twist, service is speedy and polite. The bar is staffed with experienced and friendly people who can recommend a variety of wines and cocktails with authority. The night I was there, entertainment was on in the form of a fabulous band. This is a great place, but keep your eyes open. You could easily miss this downtown gem.

Came here for a birthday. Great night fun drink menu and fun atmosphere loud with good music. If your into fun drinks late night and loud restaurants come here!! Highly recommend this place. Ordered the steam boat which is great for a large group we were (6). 2 shrimp appetizers, 2 kale salads, the filet, the pork dinner. All the food was fantastic.

Prior to my first visit, I read several reviews and do agree this to be an interesting concept restaurant. The drinks were outstanding, food selections diverse, though not particularly impressive (overall resounding MEH). The Lobster noodles were good, Grilled Octopus was wonderful complimented by a nice white bean salad. The decor was drab, dark and reminiscent of an underground speak easy- however it became way too authentic when I was greeted by a rodent in the co-ed restroom (corner WC). As I was dining with 3 other friends, and tis was early in the meal-I decided to keep that bit of info quiet. I did however find myself glancing around the floor during the meal and felt nervous about the overall sanitation of this place. Overall pretty grungy even by Tribeca standards

Went there with friends visiting New York and visited this restaurant not knowing what to expect. Unfortunately it was quite loud but we were seated in the back where it was more manageable. The menu was pretty varied and the drink menu was extensive. I was not blown away by the food but I would go again.

Atmosphere is unique and cool, great decor, theres even a cool downstairs but too much incense for me. Great drinks, amazing liquor collection. All of our cocktails were fantastic, great bartenders. We only had appetizers but they were delicious. I recommend the mushrooms!

MACAO such a great atmosphere such a great atmosphere in this "fusion" restaurant, the noodles are terrific as well as the extensive cocktail list! The room is spacious but don't know how you are not frustrated by the people noise and this is something so unique in New York. Staff is very professional and their suggestions can make your life easier if this is the first approach to a "fusion" restaurant. Delicious!!

we went to this restaurant on a Friday evening. It was buzzing. It would be a great place to go for a cocktail but equally the food was delicious too. The age range was probably 25 upwards so being 40ish we didn't feel out of place. The food is a fusion of Portuguese and north African and was wonderful. I had whole sea bream with green beans - very fresh and nicely cooked. They offered a range of well priced wines from US and Europe. Recommend to go as a couple or with a groups of friends. I would ask to be seated on the ground floor as I think there is a basement level.

The best part of our meal was our outstanding waitress. She basically steered us toward her favorites and away from dishes that were not a good value. So, chicken & pork belly dumplings (4 dumplings for $15 -- not a good value, but they were very tasty). Mushroom and truffle croquettes were decent, but again, not a good value at $14 for 4 croquettes. Our waitress turned us away from the $110 Taipa Steamboat for the table, stating that it was mostly rice and would become repetitive to eat. Instead we ordered the pork chop (perfectly cooked and a good-sized entree); the crispy whole fish (branzino), which the waitress expertly boned for us at the table; and the lobster noodles (good for no more than two people to share). Water glasses were kept full. Dishes came out at the proper pace. I would not choose to return, but I would go along if others chose it.

I visited this bar on a Wednesday night after a Mets game. I really liked the decor - a lot of nice knicknacks, and dark brown and red colors. We had quite a few drinks in the bar area. Great cocktails with a price on par for New York. Not 5 stars as the music is just too loud for me - to hard to hear people.

Refreshing to have the option of eating such creative and tasty food in a city where there are so many Italian restaurants Here excellent fusion Asian food is served in a fantastic setting with great atmosphere, service and music Highly recommended

Trendy bar and restaurant in Tribeca. Food was very mediocre and way overpriced. Cocktails were inventive and delicious! Bar and bartenders were great. Nice scene, just don't eat there.

My wife and I shared the waitress-recommended special, a beautiful piece of fish, riblets, and a chicken breast. We even fought over bbq'd corn on the cob! Yummy!

This trendy and casual bar offers a very interesting Hong Kong-like setting where the bar is always full of lively and good-looking people. The refined Chinese/Portuguese food is definitely worth savouring.

We booked this for our New Years Eve Dinner and Dance Party. I have to say that the atmosphere was great. The service was attentive and efficient. I have not had a more delicious meal of Shrimp Mozambique appetizer and Macanese Lobster with Shanghai noodles. It was all perfectly spiced requiring no additional chilli sauce. The drinks were exotic with blends of Basil , Cilantro and Lemongrass. The DJ was very good . He played a good mix of music from the 70's to present. We lucked out with parking right across the restaurant which is located in the Tribeca section just near canal street and Holland tunnel.

It is very interesting and cool place with great service and friendly staff even on a crowded Friday night. Too bad I my girlfriend was pregnant at that time so I couldn't stay there after the dinner for cocktails :) Anyway, the food is excellent. I would love to go there again and experience the rest of the place, the bar especially.

Delighted to find this place. Looked up online for places nearby as we had just landed to NYC, and am so glad this popped up. Booked it on Opentable so easy. Slightly amused that we walked by it twice before finding it, but that adds to the charm. The atmosphere is great, food is lovely with dumplings to die for. The Crispy full fish is amazing, and wagu beef..YUM! Our waitor was fun and friendly with just enough attention. Will recommend to any friend.

I was overall impressed with Macao trading company, but they could do with more lighting. I had to pull out my cellphone to light my whole fish to avoid bones. (Couldn't see menu, either, and I'm not blind!) Even though the fish was somewhat deboned, it was not played in a way as to be readily edible, which was a shame. The bar is amazing. The flavors and setting are unique.

Nice little restaurant local to hotel but interior was way too dark, it looked amazing if it was a bar/club but just not practical for a restaurant. my husband needed to use his phone to read the menu, then struggled to see what he was eating. Food was nice but not worth the price.

Work dinner with NY metro team gave a great look at the menu. Dumplings, Octopus, Fried Peppers were great appetizers. Giant pork chop looked great, I had the Cod which was just the right size portion and well prepared. Very noisy place, full of locals enjoying themselves.

We loved the atmosphere and food here!! Drinks were amazing. We had the shrimp dumplings, bbq pork ribs, fried rice, African chicken, lobster pasta and noodle soup. Everything was excellent!! We had children with us and our server was excellent in getting things out quickly! Decor is very neat, although it is dark. Highly recommend!

Typical themed kinda NYC hip bar. Drinks were good but pricey. Bar staff aloof. But that is part of it I guess. Vibe upstairs was buzzing. Downstairs was dark and not much fun. G if you can sit at the bar on ground level. Bring the Amex.

Recommended by a friend for the cocktails and can't say she was wrong. Really enjoyed the bespoke cocktails - Menina was my favorite. The joint is a little hard to find - just the doors sit back in and the signage does not stand out, so you could potentially miss it on the first pass like we did. Thought the atmosphere was great - industrial Macao style. Service was friendly and prompt. Ordered some of the dumplings and was told by the staff that they are better than in Chinatown due to better quality ingredients. I would have to disagree. In my opinion, they were good but for 15 USD for 4 pieces, they better be spectacular. Earlier that day I had amazing Sheng Jian Bao - 6 pieces for 5.25 USD. So food, overrated - don't waste your hard earned dough on that. Enjoy the cocktails - then head out somewhere else for a meal.

better book long in advance as the place is packed ; the only drawback the waiters do not leave you the time to finish the plate so as to have the next customers and they pour the wine bottle to fill up the glasse so that you order another bottle !

I've been dining at Macao for years! Happy to report that after another recent dining experience it was wonderful. Highlights included. 1.Char Siu Baby Back Ribs 2.African Chicken with a ginger sesame slaw, peanut curry sauce 3.Lobster shanghai noodles, kale, chili beurre blanc 4.Shrimp and Scallion Dumplings Thank you Macao Trading Co.! We will be back!

While ambiance is quite amazing and might not be a bad place to have drinks, I was paying over $100 for some apps, an entree, and some drinks. The chef only knows two things - very spicy or very buttery. And dishes are so tiny, even the entrees.

When you head down Church Street in the TriBeCa you would walk right by Macao unless you knew what was hidden behind the door. There is nothing outside to tip you off. Macao is a fantastic bar and restaurant, with outstanding food and a vibrant bar and restaurant scene. Macao is not large, but worth it. Just like the name, the ambience is that of a old school Chinese trading company during the heydays of Macao. The food (all fantastic) is a fusion of Portugese/Chinese. I have been there several times while in NYC and I have never been disappointed. Popular with locals.

We went to macoa late Saturday night with out a reservation and they were able to seat us immediately. The place was crowded and deffinatly noisy but that's par for the course. Wait staff was prompt and food was perfect. Drinks are a touch pricey, but consider that these are specialty crafted cocktails using high end ingredient. Totally worth it. We had the "yellow fever", great of you love bourbon. Pork belly dumplings were amazing, as we're the croquets. You must try the fried rice with shrimp and bacon. We will deffinatly be back, however next time won't bring the parents. It was a touch too loud for them but they truly loved the food and staff regardless of the volume.

the concept of being a bordello from the far east is beutifully executed, the decor is remarkable and the music is to the point, the bartenders there are more than capable and make this EO owned venue a happy place with exquisite drinks, the food however was less than satisfying we ordered 3 dishes, and aside from the dim sum which was great everything else was below average.

My husband and I ate here last week and while we enjoyed the experience at the time - food was alright and the ambience was fun - I now realise that the restaurant added a whopping 40% tip to the bill despite my rounding up the total bill to include a 20% tip!! Have I been ripped off? I want to give them the benefit of the doubt but the bill clearly states how much I was just paying them. So just be aware if you're dining here...

Months before I booked a semi-private space downstairs for 13 people and was shocked to show up on the night and find that not only had we been moved upstairs to the main dining room, but that our table wasn't even ready. 30 minutes later when the people at "our" table cleared off we were seated. Food was tasty but surprisingly the mixed drinks were not. In fact some of them were undrinkable. Our waitress was inattentive and when I got the bill she had screwed that up by a whopping $600. Man-oh-man I will not be going back to Macao!

The food was very skimpy and way overpriced. Four veggie dumplings for $16 and a plate of fish - maybe a piece no larger than 3 ounces with no vegetables or sides was $29. We left hungry. If you go, the bar is very nice and they have live music in the evening which was quite good. So, I would go back but just for a drink and the music.

I had couple of bottles of Veuve Clicquot super price, and we had good many selections, only the Bass was so so but all others very nice dishes. On monday night apparently they have a music and a little show, quite surprised, nice jazz..

Recently visited this restaurant with 4 girlfriends and some family members making us a party of 9. I cannot say enough about the awesome food and drinks, and the service absolutely blew me away. This service was better than any 5-star restaurant I've visited. If you are looking for a great restaurant with a good nightlife vibe also, this your place !!! I highly recommend it and will definitely be returning.

Macao has delicious dumplings and margaritas. Nice combo! It is dark and atmospheric and got noisier as the evening went on. Good service.

Four of us visited on a Friday night. For starters, the front-of-house staff was very professional, offering a 9:30 appointment when in called on Friday afternoon, and then calling me back to offer up the. 9: 00 pm I requested after they had an appointment. So +1 for that. When we first arrived service was prompt and professional; and while it remained professional, the promptness went by the wayside as the evening ran on. Our drinks arrived promptly: a bottle of red wine and something called a bashful maiden. I'm not really a mixed drink fan, but that thing was incredible. Our appetizers arrived promptly as well: Tusan kale and romaine salad, spicy market greens, crispy chicken & pork belly dumplings, and bacalao cakes, and all were excellent. Another +1. But then the wait began--the gap between our appetizers and mains (crispy whole fish and African chickenn--both fantastic) was nearly an hour and while I can give a little on the fact that it was a Friday night, this is their business and that sort of gap is excessive. -1 for that. Meanwhile, since we were visiting and happy to be together, the delay would have been slightly more tolerable if it weren't for the fact that the music was deafening--we were a 4-top sitting in a booth at a small table and had to practically shout to hear one another. So, sit in silence waiting for an hour, or spend the time yelling at (to?) one another. Again, -1 (probably should be -2,but I'm trying to be fair). Final analysis: if you want a "leisurely" dinner with excellent food and minimal conversation, Macao Trading Co. is the place to go on a Friday night; however if you have other places to go on the same evening, or intend to have conversation with your companions, you may want to consider other choices.

Four of us went with high expectations of this so-called Portuguese-Asian fusion. Service was good, but all the food--including the African Chicken--was mediocre.

Macao Trading Company was a new try when visiting Tribeca. Originally hoping for a nice, quiet Friday night dinner catching up with friends, we walked into a loud party with roaring music. I was a little off put because I didn’t realize that it would be a such a “party scene” for an upscale restaurant (if I wanted that I would have gone to Tao) but there is an entire downstairs area that for dinner that is quiet and much more relaxed. Phew. The ambience is dark and sultry and decorated in Chinese artifacts giving it an exotic Chinese feel. The menu is Chinese driven with some fusion touches. I got the hakka noodles which were a generous portion but a little bland. Had to ask from some chilli sauce and then it was perfect. The drink menu is also pretty extensive and unique. I would recommend trying a drink over wine or beer just because they seemed really different. It was a very pricey meal. It was $80 per person including tax and tip for one entrée and two drinks each. The cocktails were about $15 a piece. Overall, Macao Trading Company provided a cool ambience without the loud partying vibe and had good food and drink options. However, it was pricey so save it for a special occasion.

Had a fabulous birthday celebration here. Food is sooo good. Service is unbeatable. Atmosphere great. Beautiful and friendly bar in the front. Everyone from 13 to 70 had a wonderful time.

I came here with a friend for a bite to eat after the theater one night recently. Even at that hour, close to 11pm, the bar was packed and there were other tables dining. The food is very good. The menu is asian fusion and the plates are interesting and delicious. The service could not have been better! A must order is the shaved coconut ice over fruit - it was heavenly!

Great spot for a drink open late. Just below canal. Amazing singer and band the night we where there. Fun cocktails decent beers. Worth a look late night.

Not knowing the area, we planned to eat at a place that looked fine outside but proved to be less than, inside. Our daughter consulted Dr Google and this place came up, just around the corner. Lucky us. Nice atmosphere, candle-lit and characterful. Very attentive service and excellent food - best meal we had in New York. Not sure about the Portuguese/Chinese thing though since the best dish we had between us was the African Chicken. If you're in the Soho/TriBeCa area then this eatery is well worth a try.

We went on the advice of Tribeca Grand. Brillant food and fantastic cocktails. Stand out dish was the bone marrow with sweet chilli jam - yummo. Would recommend!

Service is less than average, first question on arrival is 'what time does the 3rd guest arrive", no welcome, good evening, or any other form of politeness. After that the service is speedy, hygienic...things get done without a smile. The setting: very packed and crowded, not a single spot lost, so be ready for a cramped diner. The food: really the highlight, we had the 'steamboat' for 3 which was awesome. I failed to understand the Portuguese influence (they have donuts in lieu of Portuguese tarts?!)

Went here for a few drinks. It was busy and had a really fun vibe inside.. Good drinks. Would come here again.

definitely not a chinese restaurant, definitely not a portuguese restaurant and yes, you definitely must go there. The food is amazing, whatever origin it has and the service is premium. All the personnel pays a lot of attention to your needs and always with a smile. The owner is a very funny guy and he welcomes you as you would like to be welcomed, always. Get the dumpling, the noodles with lobster and have one their drink....that's it. Have fun!

On my last visit to the city I had a chance to get into Macao on Saturday night around 9pm just before the rush. We didn't have reservations, but the hostess snuck us a table within two minutes anyway. THANK YOU!!! All in All it is what I expect for a NYC restaurant to be. Good atmosphere, lively crowd, great vibe, great drinks and great food. We had the noodles….excellent, the bacalao, yummy…. Top Noch

Been there many times and is always great! Dumplings are delicious and the atmosphere is always so exciting! Love this place!!!

We went to Macao trading company for Christmas dinner and it exceeded our expectations. The ambience was very cool, with one of the largest liquor selections I have ever seen. We had the Christmas special duck which was melt in your mouth tasty, as were the mushroom and truffle croquettes. The drink menu is incredible, with some of the most creative selections I have ever seen. Desert was fabulous (Diablo chocolate cake with dulce de leche and some very yummy donuts). I would highly recommend Macao trading company any day of the year.

Our first night in new york city our hotel reserved us this little place of portuguese asian fusion food. The atmosphere is quite groovy and looks like they had some fun cocktails to start the night off. We had a selection of different types of dishes all of very good standard and great presentation. Staff are friendly and helpful. Excellent value for money. I definitely recommend this place if you are in the area

We went for a business party in the opium (not real) room in the basement, cozy and cool, the drinks were unique and incredibly, the appetizers were well made with asian influence, the main salon its also beautiful.

Headed over to Manhattan for the evening on a whim to meet a couple friends while i was working in Pennsylvania. Stopped in to have a few drinks at Macao. The drinks were pricey but great. My favorite was the Ciao Rizo. The bartenders were friendly and were giving us recommendations on where else to go that night.

The drinks and ambiance is why you would come to this restaurant. the food was good, the music was unfortunately too heavily set in a 70s theme for my taste, but what a cool place. The drinks are AWESOME!

It's a fun place for drinks, ambiance and interesting food .... Small & noisy offering flavorful cool vibes! Great time, and our server was awesome

Enjoyable night with friends. Nice atmosphere. Fun. Food: very tasty. Dear restaurant management: not necessarily overpriced if you would actually serve appropriate portions. Four dumplings. Delicious. $4.5 each. Hmmm Entrees for sharing: Steamed Fish - delicious. $40+. Dish was so small I really did ask the waiter where the rest of the dish was. Noodles - delicious. Not enough for one person let alone 4. Lamb shank - in another restaurant, a dish the size for one person. And so on. I had to go home and eat dinner after my dinner.

$91 for 1 meal, 1 salad, 1 appetizer and 1 drink but i left hungry. skip the pork belly fried dumpling. I had the African chicken which was pretty good with the slaw. Perfect for someone on a diet. I'm from florida so I might not be familiar with NYC pricing for meals. the portions and pricing may be right by NY standards.

The last night of a week vacation for my twin girls 21st birthday - ruined by this place. Firstly, carded at the door? Bewildering as not sure if Macao wants to be a CLUB or a restaurant; they should make up their minds. Attitude from doormen, attitude from hostess, and wait staff that were not very accommodating. Yes, the girls did not have ID as they had a night out planned and did not bring anything with them. I ordered a bottle of wine and ALL staff refused to bring me 3 glasses. Right, I always drink a bottle of wine by myself. How DAFT. Clearly Macao has been busted for serving minors or something. I find it ODD, I asked over and over for extra glasses, staff was acting like I was robbing the place blind - spying on me, whispering amongst themselves. Thanks Macao for ruining the last night of a very enjoyable celebration in NYC. I could see it if I was feeding the girls table full of tequila or something of the like. Europeans give their kids wine with dinner from a very young age - NEWSFLASH. Meanwhile the gals have been getting into nightclubs in NYC from about the age of 14 WITHOUT parental chaperones. Go Figure. Sad, good food, HORRIBLE SERVICE and treated like a criminal. Don't waste your time, there are thousands of other fabulous restaurants in New York !

Went there for St Patricks day. Great food, good drinks, and a "calm" and classy way to spend st pattys. They had a jazz band and a few burlesque dancers.
Great Portuguese/Asian fusion food at prices that don't seem like NYC.
The title says it all. Crazy creative drinks in a retro Portuguese 'colonial' style. Will be back to dine again.
