A must for each visitor!

Based on some recommendations we made a short stop at Mamouds and tasted the Falafel. Wow, this was so tasty and delicious. I can only strongly recommend to stop here and make a try!

BEST FALAFEL SANDWICH EVER!

By Daniela S |

Omg the food is extremely delicious! Please try out the exquisite babaganoush or the falafel sandwich you won't regret it, trust me!

Best falafel in NYC

By stevinazo |

This place is awesome. I usually get the hummous sandwich (for $2.50), but they make the tastiest falafel in NYC handsdown. GREAT place for lunch or a late night snack.

Good Value

By TYPSUKR |

Mamouns is a middle eastern hole-in-the-wall place with affordable food. Everything was cooked to order - from sandwiches to platters. Seating is cozy with a few outdoor seats as well. We ordered a few sandwiches and one platter. The lettuce in the platter was unimpressive and brown (probably from being cut earlier in the day).

More Shawarmer Please

By The Great Gazoo |

A great Shawarmer , a great Falafel !!!! Always good. As usual it's a task getting in and ordering, tough getting a seat. Its worth the trip. If your looking for a easy fix that's will fix your craving this is the place. I have been going to mamoun's for 15 plus years and its always good.

Shawarma sandwich

By KeenanArbil |

The shawarma is not as good as the stuff in Berlin but it's delicious by NYC shawarma standards. Good and quick food, perfect forage night drunken munchies

Excellent Deal

By kat_r0d |

For a place like this, you have a large shwarma sandwich with a side order of grape leaves will definitely leave you stuffed for the night. It's a great and inexpensive dinner and its a walk away from Washington Park so you can bring your food there and have a nice dinner.

Went donw hill and got weird.

By soccermarti |

Some cashiers have gotten weird some give off a weird vibe. They might judge you on your look and some aren't friendly. Almost seems like some cashiers are hostile toward whites. This is basically bazaroworld but this is St Marks. The original place was a hole in the wall but the service was at least with a smile. The food also went down hill. Sandwiches are premade and aren't served hot just slightly warm. The prices are higher than before and even higher that their West Village Location. I recommend staying away.

Amazing food!

By merrillma |

We hung out around this street almost every night during our vacation because we enjoyed going to the comedy cellar. One night we decided to try this place for dinner, it is just a few doors down. We were both shocked at how great the falafel and hummus was. They both ordered a platter with falafel, hummus, baba ganoush, cucumber salad, and pita. They really don't have any seating, so we ended up standing up at some nearby tables. I would highly recommend this place, even you aren't nearby. Make the trip!

Very good falafel

By StelliesRSA |

We visited on a food tour. The white sesame seed sauce complements the falafel and the hot sauce is...very hot. An enjoyable experience and we will return.

Since 1971

By Stan Tecza |

East village location is cash only. I enjoyed Chicken Schwarma more than falafel but maybe it’s because I ate it first. Both solid. Pastry whose name I forget was good too if not a little dry. Cute spot.

Hungry at 2am?

By busybeachjenn |

Mamoun's has tasty falafel for cheap and is open late. It's perfect for lunch, for dinner, for a snack, and definitely for a late night post-party meal. I recommend the falafel with several DROPS of the hot sauce. Be forewarned that the hot sauce packs some serious heat so mind your dosage (this is coming from someone who loves hot sauce and eats thai chilies on a regular basis).

Over TEN Million Falafel Sold!

By Fred P |

While I don't know precisely how many millions of falafel balls have been fried since Mamoun's opened in 1971, the astonishing thing is that the flavors here remain so fresh, the attention to detail so vigilant. The menu is not big but everything is delicious. I recently had a falafel sandwich here and realized that I have been stopping by since the mid-Seventies. This was a neighborhood that was the heart of counterculture and saw all the big figures--Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Jimmy Hendrix, Tina Turner--and all the social movements. So much has changed and every new wave of young people that floods through here think they are nothing like their elders and are reinventing the world. And ALL of them have eaten Falafel at Mamoun's. Also good on my recent visit was the minty lemonade and I liked the blackberry juice as well. All props to Mamoun's for keeping the faith.

Great food

Yes, the raves about Mamoun's are legi. Their offerings are inexpensive, delicious, and flavorful. Seating is limited, and restrooms aren't available.

i missed it a lot

By ARELIOUS |

i have been in NY city for 4 years and used to go these place at least once a week, man very first time when i went (4 years ago) i paid $ 2.00 for absolutely awesome falafel in NY City..........man even a bottle of water cost around $ 1.50 ....falafel is cheap but gr8 in quality...its located near by NYU, very easy to reach ,withing 2 minutes walk from subway station. its open till early morning and no matter what time you go there ...you will see bunch of people waiting for food over there which tells that food is awesome . i always suggest my friends who are visiting NYC to stop by at this place and give a shot .. i bet they will love it......and one more thing man when you try that hot sauce be easy on it its really HOT HOT HOT .... since last 2 years i think price is $2.50 which i will consider still a cheap compare to quality, taste and location wise. awesome food everyone should try it.

ok falafel

By Cambridge2014 |

I had heard a lot about Mamoun's but wasn't sure if I went to the wrong place. The falafel was okay - a bit too many crunchy bits that made me wonder if I had bitten down on some grit. Overall just okay, not particularly great or bad. Quick service. No lineup. I wonder if I went to the wrong place....

Tasty and affordable

Stumbled upon this place while walking through the neighbourhood. Ordered a falafel sandwich with fries and my partner had a shawarma. Both were delicious.

Probably the best stuffed grape leaves in new york

By Siddharth B |

Excellent little take away place (they do have tables available in case you wanna dine in), the best falafel sandwich we had in New york (and we had a few). But the Grape Leaves steal the show, my wife and I are huge fan of lebanese food and we weren't disappointed. Good options for Vegetarians like us (most of their sauces are Vegan too, you just need to ask)

what a business small place.

By niranjan m |

oh my god one of the best falafels and shewarmas in the city of new york. value for money all the way. portion size is fairly decent. taste was very nice hot and straight from the hot plate.

Not impressed...

By Thero_Kenman |

Got a falafel sandwich here. It was so-so. The falafel were good, but it was served with a scant bit of lettuce and tomato and a squirt of tahini. It is only a couple of blocks from Maoz...it would be worth the walk.

Delicious falafel!

By Shahana19 |

If you love falafel, then you HAVE TO try out Mamoun's!.. On a cold day, accompany your falafel sandwich with the lentil soup - quite a perfect combination! Its a little cramped place so might be better to do take away!

Great value for lunch

By NickiandNolan |

This tiny hole-in-the-wall place had excellent falafel sandwiches (just $3) and good lamb shwarma also ($6). Filling and quick but not many seats. The hot sauce (which they make) was SUPER spicy so be careful!

Delicious Felafel

By jsc813 |

Tiny place that admits the lights and sounds of the East Village you have to look hard to find. The menu is small but not missing any essentials. We ordered the falafel plate and received 6 delicious falafel, 2 pita's and all the fixings for $6. The sauce is HOT and I burned my taste buds by putting a generous dollop on top of my sandwich but that is my own fault. The felafel, what I could taste of it was wonderful, crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside. The service was good and fast.

Great food at great prices

By Vamsi K |

My wife and I visited Mamoun's for a late dinner after drinking at an Afghan restaurant nearby. The food is extremely affordable and delicious. We had lamb and felafel dishes, both of which were excellent in taste and in serving size. A great place indeed and from online searches, I realize it's immensely popular too!

Great low cost and tasty food!

By Mr D |

Friends that went to college nearby recommended this place. I can see how they really liked it - the foods great! Service is fast and friendly. Sit outside and take in the area and people!

Incredibly cheap and good. $2.50 for a falafel sandwich! It's hard to eat out for less than that in New York.

FALSE ADVERTISEMENT AT ITS FINEST!!!

By alegria l |

So, this week I was given a flyer saying that if you sing up for the rewards app from mamouns you would get a FREE SIDE + 30 FREE POINTS.... Well, that's a vile LYE since the flyer (paper) they are giving out is giving people false hope of getting "SOMETHING" just to get them to sing up... it has a date until august 15, 2020 and I was given this on Monday MARCH 15, 2021... To be honest this is not about a FREE SIDE... is the dishonesty that this location in St. Marks Place have, I gave a call to find out what was going on because I do got "MY 30 FREE POINTS" but didn't get the "FREE SIDE" LOL, it doesn't make sense to me so I was curious and on Wednesday march 17th at 7:28pm to find out the "DEAL" and after explaining a lady over the phone that was acting weird like she didn't understood what I was saying... she took my number and told me that I was going to be contacted by the manager witting 1 business day and I was like: "oh wow that's amazing, thank you I will be waiting for the call" something that can be addressed in less than 2 minute require a 1 business day return call LOL =) SO, TODAY IS FRIDAY MARCH 19 and I called again at 6:35 pm (a 2 full business day) and I asked for the manager... When the SUPER MANAGER picked up the phone and I explained that I had call, he literally covers the phone to ask if someone called and within couple of seconds, he didn't say anything about the "undelivered message" and asked me what happened... After explaining he kind of took it personal, saying that it was not false advertising because the paper is "DATED" and that explain the process to sing up, I told him: "yeah is dated, promising false hope for people" and also why I got then the 30 free points and not the side? he didn't know what to say and started talking on top of me without respect and his tone elevated... I told him you are the "manager" you should listen to a customer that just listened to you.... and it not about the free side is about giving "expired paper/flyer to customers" that visits the restaurant 1-2 a week. he insisted with nonsense that it was nothing BAD ABOUT IT LOL and I told him: "you know what you should learn not to take things personal and thank you SUPER MANAGER" It's incredible who or how this kind of people get hired? and the attitude the women working there have is hilarious. I saw her picking up the front carpet (wearing gloves) and without even changing them went behind the counter. to pack food really????.. the HAVE ARE NOT COVID FRIENDLY THATS BEING DIRTY!!! Long history short! AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COST... their falafel is good but not the BEST EVER and the last time it was MORE LETTUCE THAN ANYTHING LOL, MESSY AND NOT AS ADVERTISED. Do you want an AWESOME FALAFEL just google? "The best falafel recipe ever" and will find tons of it. This establishment is full of rude and disrespectful employees that behaves like it is FOR FREE... just lost loyal customers and friends that will not buy from them. Good luck and remember karma work like this: "what you do to others, you are doing it to yourself" #cheers =)

Sets the Standard

Mamouns sets the American falafel standard by which all others are measured. Treasured by vegetarians and those who enjoy Middle Eastern food, Mamouns is hard to beat, whether you want the classic falafel or a meat shish-ke-bab.

Get To Go

By TheLeongOhana |

On advice from a friend from NYC we walked over here for lunch. Inside there was only enough room for customers to queue and order. No indoor seating allowed but not sure how people could eat inside. Outside there were a couple tables and chairs but surround by puddles of smelly water and a sewer. Not the best situation so we opted to A compact menu of middle Eastern food items that could be ordered as a sandwich, plate combo or side depending on how hungry one happened to be. Overall highlights for the plates we ordered, generous servings of falafel or shawarma on a bed of shredded lettuce, rice and chopped tomatoes. Could be almost two meals. Some pieces of meat were a little over cooked (but had good flavor) and the pita bread, store bought, were sufficiently soft. Service was fast.

The best $2.50 lunch you will every find!

By AnnieMagee |

Mamoun's is a treasure! It's in a fun neighborhood on St. Mark's Place. Lots of funky shops to look in. A very convenient spot to pick up a tattoo or piercing! My daughter and I stopped into Mamoun's on Friday and we each got a falafel pita. Total bill $5! We weren't ready to eat so we took them to Washington Square Park. The very polite and efficient staff at Mamoun's had wrapped them in foil, so they were still warm. We found a picnic table in the sun and enjoyed the fantastic falafel! I love falafel and this is among the best I've ever had. Fresh pita, lots of warm falafel with a perfect hearty texture, plenty of fresh veggies and tahini sauce. And the price just can't be beat. It's true that it can be expensive to eat in Manhattan, but it can also be absurdly cheap at no-frills places like Mamoun's. Can't recommend it highly enough.

Excellent

I like the honesty of the cashier, I asked about chicken and beef if they are Halal or not, and he said they aren't. So I end up with the best Falafel ever.

best falafel sandwich in town

this place has the best falafel and tabbouleh around. Love the mcdougal street restaraunt but they need to add more tables for a seating area theres no where to sit its grab and go!

The Pinnacle of Late-Night Foods

By Tom S |

This is a go-to late-night spot for my friends and I. The food is cheap, SUPER delicious, and the service is very fast. Nothing tastes better when you're tipsy than one of these Falafel sandwiches. Just be warned, they do not no accept credit cards, so plan accordingly. I hope you enjoy!

Small but Sensational

By nyladeblu |

Lunch or quick dinner this is a place to try. Limited seating but the tastes are worth the wait. Whether pita sandwich or platter, you can't go wrong. Watch out for the hot sauce, a little goes a long way.

King of Falafel

By Jami Kath H |

I ate my weight in Mamoun's back in college, but I was a little nervous it wouldn't live up to my memory a decade later. Have no fear, this is still the best falafel I've ever eaten. I recommend adding hummus and the (spicy!) hot sauce. Doesn't really matter what time you go, this place is packed. Do not expect to get a table. If you do, congrats, but I would anticipate eating in a nearby park. Stock up on napkins 'cause these babies get messy. The food is cheap, fresh, and available until the wee hours of the morning - making it a great post comedy show stop.

Average Falafel

By NWS |

Momouns's Falafel has pretty good falafel but you could get better falafel In other falafel restaurants. If you want a small snack go here but if you want a full meal go somewhere else. If you are in the East Village, go to Momouns's Falafel.

Schwarma Schwarma Schwarma

By PaulJ19ks |

Less crowded than their other locations, they make some of the best chicken schwarma. Limited seating, take it to go and enjoy the sights. A fantastic subway/street food

First try of Falafel

By gollumnz |

I tried Falafel here at Mamoun's as I was on a walking tour by free walking tours whilst in New York on holiday. I was told that this was very good Falafel and since this was my first time trying this dish i was not one to argue against that recommendation. But I did enjoy the the dish although I found it a bit salty for my normal taste. If you are passing by in the St Marks part East Village New York do try

worst shawarma ever

By Steve P |

I've had pretty good shawarma at the old Tahini restaurant on 3rd and St. Marks but they are not there any more. I've gone to ChickPea and they are expensive and too franchisee. The people making them are clueless. So, I find myself at Mamouns and I have to say, this place should be called MaMooks. They suck, I almost yacked. I cannot emphasize how bad this place is. Fortunately, I was only out 6 bucks. The sandwich was not edible. The meat was grizzle and there were no topping or sauces on the sandwich to hide the awful meat. Do not do it.

so cheap & so good!

By Lindsey S |

This place is legendary and known to plenty bar goers in the area. Amazingly, I had somehow never eaten here until late night last week. A friend of mine and I had gone out in the area and realized we never ate dinner so at about 2am we figured this spot would be perfect! Indeed...we were right. I had their regular falafel sandwich and tested my limits by topping it with their homemade supremely spicy hot sauce. This is not for the faint at heart! It packs a serious punch. My friend put some on his and was practically soaked wet from sweat by the end of his sandwich! The food is extremely budget friendly (our sandwiches were each $3.50) and very tasty. The spot is tiny, so sit outside if you can get one of the tables and watch the happenings on the street. Never a dull moment in that area.

Said to be best falafel by food tour guides

By LookingForFamilyFun |

We ate falafel (pita) here and it was good, quick, but not many places to sit. Price was reasonable for NYC & the quantity you got. I'm sure it is the best NYC has to offer, our food guides were pretty reliable & knowledgable, but our last falafel was in Israel, so it didn't even compare....

Simply the best.

By RebekahCMS |

I love falafel. I have my go to spots in each borough, in most neighborhoods. When I finally found myself close to Mamoun's, there was no question whether or not to go. Hadn't ever been to this location and hadn't been to the teensy West Village storefront in a coupla years. Wow. The falafel? Crisp, well-seasoned. Perfect. I tried the shawarma and it was, no exaggeration, the best I've ever had. The seasoning was impeccable! The salad was fresh, yummy, and I really liked the dressing. The pickles were crisp and refreshing. The pita was bland but that's kinda the point when everything else is so flavorful. And the French fries? Delicious. I got them with the garlic sauce which was tasty but way too salty. The staff were friendly and efficient. I found a seat by the window -- lucky, it was crowded. And the hot sauce was spicy spicy. Perfect, seriously. Officially my favorite falafel of all boroughs and neighborhoods.

Phenomenal Falafels

By happytrailsnyc |

I've been eating here since 1972. I loved it then and still love it now. Back then it was 50 cents, now it's $2.50 - and still worth it. During all these years Mamoun's has never compromised on quality or skimped on loading up a falafel. Grape leaves and Spinach pies are also a favorite, but I usually just stick to Falafel, or sometimes the Falafel platter (which is essentially a Falafel 'undressed') Also worth noting is Mamoun's hot sauce: If you can drink a bottle of Tabasco, you might be able to handle half of a teaspoon of this scorcher. Rich overtones of spice (cinnamon, perhaps?) and lots of heat. If you're in the Village it's worth waiting in line for a Mamoun Falafel. Enjoy!

Falafel heaven

By tkc29 |

We come in to NYC every year and this is a must place. My husband loves falafel. They expanded the place. The falafel is fresh and tasty but don't try the hot sauce or your mouth will be on fire. Also no rest room. By sharing your experiences, you're helping travelers make better choices and plan their dream trips. Thank you!

Delicious, Fast, Cheap Eats

By Bess R |

Mamoun's is a staple of St. Marks, particularly in the hearts of frugal college students and all partiers with the munchies. This hole in the wall shop might not look like much from the outside, although the fairly constant group of people in and around the place should give you a hint about what's inside. The traditional falafel is what you should get here - I personally go for the sandwich, which is perfectly spiced and is an outstanding meal for the few dollars you pay for it. You should know that this isn't the kind of place to sit down and have a group meal. It's a grab and go kind of situation, although there are a few seats around. If you want falafel, or even are looking for a quick, truly tasty meal, look no further. And don't be afraid of a long line, they keep things moving!

Great Falafel, Great Price

By Alan H |

Stopped by for a falafel sandwich today and was not disappointed. Excellent falafel and quick service. Great hot sauce but beware of its potency. Can't beat it for great food at great prices. ($3.00 for a falafel).

Incredible shawarma and Falafel

By Tambalini |

When you’ve people eating outside, on top of car hoods or sitting on the curb eating this food you know it’s a craving that neighbours just need to satisfy. It’s great fresh middle eastern food. Had the lamb shawarma and was some of the best I’ve ever had. Their St. Marks location was their first. Definitely a must stop when when I’m in New York.

Spectacular!!!

By Susan M |

Amazing falafel! It's making me hungry just thinking about it. Very busy spot - so don't plan on making a night of it. It's very much grab and go. But that doesn't take away from the yumminess of the food!!

Yummy falafels

By earthangel_376 |

My husband and I came here for a pre-off-broadway-show snack recently. Had read reviews online giving this place high marks and so was eager to try. I ordered a plain falafel sandwhich and my hubby ordered one with humus. It was simply delish! I love the plentiful fresh lettuce, tomato, and onion. One regret is that I didn't notice that the hot sauce was sitting on the other counter until after I finish the sandwhich! We ate standing up inside the tiny place since it was freezing outside. There is very little sitting room inside with only 3 small tables. There are 2 counters you can stand at, one facing the street. Only rated it 4 out of 5 since I've only tried one item on the menu. We wanted to try other things but we were planning on an after show snack somewhere else so didn't want to be too full. I was excited to learn that they are opening one in New Brunswick, NJ close to where I am so I can have great falafels very soon!!

Authentic experience

By Nilaynb |

Excellent food and taste ! One of the best taste in town ! Go and enjoy ! They have decent menu to serve the falafel ! Though small space but authentic taste !

Great Value and Food

By wzenor |

Stopped in for lunch today. Had to go around the area so I looked for cheap and quick lunch...was not disappointed. Had the shawarma sandwich ($6) and a side of falafel ($1.50). The sandwich was jam packed with meat, very surprised, and had great flavor. The falafels weren't anything special, but 3 for 1.50...you can't beat that. Also came with a side of tahini as well. I would absolutely come back here again.

$4 bucks for a GIGANTIC baba and tabouli sandwich! :)))

By Beverly L |

This was totally delicious, and can you beat the value?? My "veggie" sandwich of 2 items (baba and tabouli) was huge, and 4 dollars! I couldn't even eat dinner that night! I got a side of falafel for $2. It was like a feast. The flavors are fantastic, the service was really quick and friendly. I really feel you can't beat this value, the flavors, and the fun neighborhood. Check it out!

The best falafel in NYC

By RingoMoss |

This little hole in the wall proved to be the best falafel I have ever tasted. Quick, excellent value and super tasty this place was packed with locals and tourists getting their fill. Well worth a special visit, I will be back again whenever I get the chance.

Delicious!!

By Eleven Roe |

I can't wait to go back. The falafel is out of this world! My husband had the shawarma and it was equally delicious.

Hole in the Wall, Great Food!

By Jared B |

This hole in the wall Falafel place near NYU is great. The atmosphere screams local and hole in the wall. Cash only, limited seating, and a plethora of locals (college students and otherwise) let us know this place was legit. We got the Falafel sandwich and the Shawarma sandwich and they were so good (as well as affordable).

THE BEST - Go There Now

By JaydieGee |

Have been enjoying this place forever. The best falafel you'll ever have in the city, and their hot sauce is PERFECT. Everything here is great, but you'll want the falafel to start with. The guys are nice, super fast and GREAT for late night!

Authentic, delicious Middle Eastern food!

By QuakerTruth |

If you are looking for very reasonably priced, delicious food, go to Mamoun's. There are several locales in New York City. Hot, fresh, tasty food awaits you. And leave room for dessert too. This is one of our go to places for fast food which is healthy!

Good Falafal

By Pinkiu |

You don't come here for atmosphere. You come here for Falafal. And Mamoun's is one of the best. Yes, the 3 tables and 6 chairs are junked and seating is VERY limited, but the food is GREAT. Interestingly, while we were eating outside, a walking tour group stopped in front of us. The guide explained to the group what Middle Eastern food was, in particular, Falafal. He then ordered two containers for the group to try. I felt like a zoo exhibit!

Like as Middle East

Falafel sandwich delicious. Place something narrow to move but nice and pretty place. And the families maybe kind of uncomfortable to steer the strollers. Give a try!

Handmade falafel

By Mjsomaha |

This falafel is exceptional and in a whole different league from the type you find in the carts on the street corners of New York City. Delicate and crispy, made from fava beans and fresh garbanzo purée. Full of fresh flavor. The tahini sauce is also bright and refreshing. There are now three locations so they must be doing something right.
