Food good, service needs improvement

By Fincut |

In the last 12 months I've been in New York City twice for a week each. I had breakfast every morning at the Manhattan Diner, although during my second stay the hotel was far away. However, the breakfast is very good at the Manhattan Diner, the prices are negotiable and the flar or interior decoration is simply great. The service is very fast, which is of course an important criterion. However, the service is occasionally too fast and you will be charged for it, although you are not finished and will not be asked if you want to order anything else. However, not all waiters in the Manhattan Diner show this behavior. What is very annoying is that some of the waiters ask the same two questions every time:"Where do you come from? How long are you staying?" No matter how often you eat there, several times in a row, some of the waiters always ask these questions. Depending on the answer, the drink money will either be charged directly to the bill (tourists from Europe?) or not. This behaviour varies depending on the waiter, so you have to be very careful every day to see if you have been charged for the money or not. That's a very, very annoying behavior. A little tip to the Manhattan Diner: Our voluntary tip was always significantly higher than the tip that was billed directly. You should dispense with it or make a uniform arrangement. Every day different with the same guests is cheeky and does not fit to the otherwise impeccable dinner!

Nice place!

By DrGoldin |

I used to eat here with my parents in the 1980's (when it had a different name). Haven't been back since. But very pleased! Relatively small menu, but fear not—everything you expect from a local diner is here, and it's tasty, too. Throw in soul-comforting breakfast available all day and cheerful service, and you have a low-key, unpretentious winner.

Great family restaurant

By Francisco |

Great food, great environment. What I liked the most was their staff. Great group of happy Mexican guys always ready to serve you.

Good breakfast

By steclear |

Visited the Manhattan Diner whilst staying at the Hotel Newton. Had breakfast here for the 5 days we stayed in New York . Foods good , service is good . We paid between $35-40 for three of us which I don't think is too much. Overall very happy with our visits to the Manhattan Diner

Lunch

By leaester |

Last time we were in NYC we had breakfast at this place. I remember we liked it. Today we had lunch. Very family orientated. The food is good and the service also. Big portions, good value for your money. Not expensive at New York standards. I had grilled trout and it was very nice. My husband asked for some eggplant special, and if you like cheese, your well served. To end we had a chocolate cake to share between us. It was good and not overly sweet. We couldn't finish it! We will come back next time again.

Discount with hotel key

Food looked pretty appetising, but as I was ill I went for the matzoh ball soup. A little greasy but it served its purpose.

Perfect American diner experience! Great, yummy food, huge portions, nice waiters!

By msdrum |

I've lived a few blocks away from this diner for over 20 years. First, get real - it's a diner, not a fancy, schmancy gourmet place. But! The food is awesome! I've loved whatever I've ordered there - burgers, fried fish sandwich, souvlaki sandwich, any breakfast... my husband & I even eat Thanksgiving dinner there, every year! It's often very busy & crowded, but that's a good sign of how great they are. The waiters are friendly & warm. The portions are huge! I almost always have to take part of my meal home. And sometimes, when they have a special meal, my husband & I order two meals to go 'cause we want MORE of their yummy food! And it's very clean. Great American food!

Disappointing

By Pink P |

I usually like diners but this one was really disappointing. Its menu was smaller than most and the food was mediocre. The staff were not particularly welcoming and the manager was downright grumpy. Oh, and there's no guest wifi. With the thousands of other options in Manhattan, there is absolutely no reason to use this diner.

Best pancakes ever!

By kungensbror |

What can I say? You'll not be hungry after being here! Try the pancakes, they are delicious! Right next to the subway.

Cheap food and lots of it!

By 2016Sheena |

This is a perfect place to take the kids, and the portions are very very large!! The pancakes are delicious, but I wouldn't order the coffee. Diner coffee is not good.

Home away from home!

By Star K |

My son and I have been going to Manhattan Diner once or twice a week for about two years. The food is delicious and the staff is friendly and helpful. We are regulars there and I have never had anything but a great experience there.

Delicious

By Norene A |

Looking for a place close to our apartment and didn't have much time. This was just around the corner. Fortunately we were greeted and seated immediately. As all diners the menu was vast. They even had specials although it was only 12:30 and they were out of the brisket sandwich. Surprised they say they are for families, yet they didn't have a children's menu. We ordered chicken fingers and fries and our waiter nicely split the order and brought it on two plates. Portions were very generous and very tasty. Prices were reasonable, too. Will definitely be going back.

Great breakfast

By Ventura B |

We had breakfast here for 2 days and we tried many things. Everything was good and it was all served quickly. The price is not expensive and fair for NYC.

Classic diner experience

By Fionayael |

You need to try a diner once in New York. This is comfortable, service is good, and food is typically diner. Not my kind of food, but an experience. Typically bad coffee. But we only found one place with good strong (but not bitter) coffee in NY. Glad we went, but not tempted to have a second diner experience.

Great find for our visit

By 1984jessm |

I went to NYC for a week with my boyfriend and we were staying around the corner from this place. We ended up there on 4 occasions (3 breakfasts and one dinner). The place is open from very early until very late. We found it welcoming and the staff friendly both in the morning and evening. The place was very bustling on our first visit but it's quite large and we never had an issue getting a seat. I tried out their pancakes as part of a breakfast deal of about $7 which comes with a cup of tea. Great value! They also didn't quibble when I asked for some banana with it and I wasn't charged any extra. The next time I had the wholegrain pancakes with berry's and this was spectacular and about $10. The other breakfast I had was the waffles, again with added banana. Our evening meal was burgers. The veggie burger was delicious, which I washed down with a cocktail. We then got a huge slice of cake each, with coffee, to go. In total, I think we paid about $80 for this meal, which was great value considering the portion sizes, drinks and cake! I really wish I had a place like this local to me in England, but then again, I'd be the size of a house!

Great food, fast service

By geneva003 |

Went here for breakfast and it was amazing! The service was great and the food came out fast. The only thing I would have changed was I would have asked for the potatoes to be left on the grill longer. (didn't know that was an option until I heard another customer ask)

If you like Diners, this is for you; if you like mediocre food -- all the more so!

By Trup |

I have been to the Manhattan Diner often (mostly for breakfast) because of its convenient location. The food is mediocre at best but the service is good. City Diner is better (a few blocks down Broadway; Metro Diner also better -- a few blocks up Broadway).

Great diner next door

By pwsmith |

We've lived in the neighborhood for years, and Manhattan diner does not disappoint. Sometimes you can really be surprised by a dish, just how good it is. Service is great when eating in, delivery is usually great but from time to time they will forget to send the meal 1/2 a block...but this is rare. Overall a decent, reliable place with good food and friendly staff. And you can sit there for a while; they don't rush you out.

worst fish and chips ever......

By 1dartman |

Staying around the corner at the days inn this was convenient. I had a fine breakfast here on a previous trip two months ago. This time I had a lunch special of fish and chips which was just awful. Also had dessert one night which was adequate.

Family feeling

By Jeff M |

This Dinner is one of those places that makes you feel like Family, The Omelet was one of best omelets that I have had in a while, my potatoes were cold and had peppers and onions in them, my toast was a bit burnt and not even cut in half, the Coffee was OMG Delicious, the service was great

Excellent 5* Diner !

By lukonga8 |

Ohhhhh, this place is just exquisite! Just like the movies! Nice sit down area, contemporary whilst also traditional! Delicious wafflesssss!! Delicious sandwiches, everything was amazing. What makes this place even more better than the other diners on the same street is that the staff in this diner make you feel WELCOME. They also cater to your needs. As a British person, I have my waffles with fresh fruit and cream and they happily done it for me even though they thought it was weird!! haha, however my partner and I went to another diner and they REFUSED to give me strawberries, so we walked out and went back to here. I will be back for the amaziiiiing hot chocolate! Oh and they accept credit cards!

Basic Diner With Some Standouts

By CarolynNYC |

Prices are not super cheap, and service can be spotty (even when they aren't busy), but I've had a lot of great meals and great take out food from here. Soups are always good, especially the lentil. Servings are generally huge, and my husband and I can split a bacon cheeseburger with fries (ask for the fries well done/crispy, otherwise they can be underdone) and still not finish the fries. Breakfast food is predictable but tasty, especially omelets (spinach omelet with feta and tomatoes)(yum)(which is also a nice dinner with a glass of reasonably priced pinot grigio). My husband likes the fried chicken from here, and their lasagne is good, although a recent home delivery order of it was weirdly small and didn't include the side vegetable it would have been served with in the restaurant. If you are ordering for delivery speak slowly and clearly and be prepared for a wait if it's busy. The aforementioned bacon cheeseburger(s) have been devoured as memorable dinner party fare at our place and will continue to be!

Great Eats

By Michaelestes |

We had 2 other couples with us eating meals. We found this place one half a block from our hotel. This place rocked with service and great food. There are large portions so you might want to split/share meals. We all tried varied meals and they were made to order. Sometime the waiter would ask if you wanted the meal prepared a certain way and they would accommodate you. The prices are comparable to other restaurants.

I always come back!

By Girlonadolphin |

Great service. Good food. Good selection of food. I have been going to this Diner for more than a decade. I liked their original location (from 6 years ago) but I got to like their new location. All day breakfast, close to the Subway and a bus near the same block. Pancakes, burgers, cheesecake, the marinara meatballs... all good

Hidden gem

By judyoconnor |

Great food at great prices. Clean with good service. Would definitely go back again. Right across the street from Symphony Space.

Best breakfast

By ciarancarey |

I must say I loved this place. I had the lumberjack pancakes and they were excellent, only outdone by the excellent staff and atmosphere of the place. I was just drinking water but anytime the glass was even half full they were straight over to refill it unprompted. A small touch but well appreciated.

Very Good but....

By Mark E |

Haute Cuisine it ain’t - solid American style diner (OK you can get cappuccino and croissant if you like) so the food is basic fare well made rather than fancy. Service is fine, the room lacks frills but is nicely furnished, however the surfaces are hard and it gets noisy. Prices are reasonable. Worth a visit or two with your kids or partner - but not a place for a first date!

Great place for breakfast and dinner

By howardeawilliams |

We visited the manhatten diner on our first night for dinner, and thereafter every morning for breakfast. Cannot fault this place for service or tasty food, and my wife had excellent specials vegetarian food. I would recommend anyone visit this place.

Breakfast here is a must!!

By SJenkins17 |

Went here the first morning of my holiday in New York February of last year and ended up going every single morning for the rest of my stay. The breakfast was the nicest breakfast I have tasted and the portions were large which is just right for my big appetite. The prices are not extraordinary and the staff are a bonus to the diner so friendly and always smiling. Would definitely recommend going here if you are planning a visit to New York.

Tasty Food at Reasonable Prices

By Steve_In_Ulster |

I ate here on 4 different occasions as I was staying at the Very nearby Newton Hotel. I had 1 Breakfast, 1 lunch and 2 Dinners. Food was always fresh. Very tasty. Good attentive Waiting Service. Very friendly Staff who remember my face from the previous day which was nice. And the Dessert Display cabinet was great. The chocolate Cakes were all amazing. If I wasn't out Exploring NYC I definitely would have eaten here on more occasions.

Great Diner!

By Amy B |

We came here a couple of times during our stay in New York for brunch and dinner as it was around the corner from our hotel. Every time we came, the service was good and the food was great. We had lots of different dishes, including sandwiches (the brisket one was awesome) and burgers (go for the one with avocado and add blue cheese. I was in Heaven!). It's really affordable and a proper old school American diner. Highly recommended.

Best Diner

By Ilanfreedman |

I liked the sandwiches that they serve, and a piece of chocolate fudge cake for desert. It's only minutes to Central Park.

Nice breakfast

By Tim Jami |

We went here with my girlfriend one morning on our holiday. Fast service, polite staff, nice athmosphere and good coffee. Good choice for breakfast.

Best value for quality food and discount price

By runner002 |

Typical classic diner with tables or booths, breakfast and dinner specials excellent and service superb, even when busy (which it is often so don't mind a wait).

All time breakfast lunch and diner

By Manuel C |

Nice place well located in the west upper side with a fast and American cooking, eggs, bacon, toasts, all for the breakfast. And for the lunch ir diner, or to take away, soups and sandwiches of prime entrees. Very good desserts, impressive cakes.

Typical New York diner

By V2315FJtl |

Open all day and always quite busy - if the locals use it, it must be good. The breakfasts are huge and good value.

Good Food

By Thomas M |

The restaurant has American menu. The food is good and plentiful. The restaurant also serves drinks. You can’t beat the price either. Look for Singh as your waiter. He is friendly and efficient.

Breakfast

By 1dartman |

Had a HUGE breakfast here. It was good. Food came out hot and how i wanted it. The service was just OK......

A great diner

By Tim |

Great service by Javier. We really liked our meals. The location was quite convenient. Very clean place to eat.

Gays beware

By Cochinon |

I have frequented this neighborhood joint for years. Friendly waiters, reliable food, late hours. However, the cook is blatantly anti gay and apparently proud of it. Tonight I heard him making derogatory comments and mocking "ese maricon". Shameful and offensive. And they don't stay open until 1:00. Tonight they were turning people away at 12:25.

Really enjoyed this restaurant

By ekelleman88 |

I ate here 3 times in the week I stayed in NYC. My hotel was right around the corner so it was very convenient. It is your typical Greek restaurant with many menu items to choose from. It is a little pricey ($15 for a chicken wrap and fries) but the food is good, the wait staff is friendly, and the place is clean. They also offer delivery.

Average diner

By USCKaboom |

Had a salmon omelette that was fairly average. The potatoes on the side were equally boring. I had turkey sausage that wasn’t good.

Top Brekkie

By markeastaugh |

The true American diner experience. Great food, huge portions and swift service. Really good value for what we had

Brilliant for Breakfast!

By lucytreg |

We stayed at the Newton Hotel which is almost next door to the Manhattan Diner so we ended up going there twice over a 3 day stay in New York. The evening meal food was good. I had a burger that was great quality meat. The breakfast here, however, was amazing. I had pancakes with bacon and they were absolutely amazing. The meal comes with 3 huge 'American style pancakes' and even as someone with a fairly big appetite, particularly in the mornings, I couldn't finish it all. Definitely worth a visit!

Homemade?

By BRIAN B |

It only took a few minutes to assemble seating for eight people. Service was helpful and the staff pleasant. I chose from the Brunch Menu Homemade Blintzes. Every one was happy with their choices, coffee was refilled promptly when asked for. My only fault found would be that the blintzes may have been homemade, but probably not that day and the texture would imply that they had been frozen. Russ & Daughters Cafe still offer the freshest blintzes.

Ok food

By Duke R |

Nothing special but not expensive and open late. Preferred the Metro Diner up the road. Friendlier staff and food a bit better

Fantastic PreShow Food

By FoodandTea_Lover |

Our group of dancers were here to get a bite to eat before our show at Symphony Space. Wait staff treated us very well and the food came quickly. Portions were more than generous for the price. Great selection of diner food. Great ambiance. I especially liked the old fashioned booths.

Classic NYC Diner on the UWS

By zzeke |

Good neighbourhood diner well worth a visit. Expansive menu with all the classic diner dishes (meatloaf, etc.). Visited mid-afternoon, and it has a steady stream of customers - always a good sign.

Great quality service and food

By Jasonleg |

Manhattan Diner is a great place to have meals. Had two on this stay breakfast and light dinner. Breakfast was amazing and I love banana pancakes and these are really one of the best I have had in the city - nice and fluffy. Coffee is really good quality and had many cups. For dinner had a grilled cheese, which came with the regular coleslaw and gherkin. Staff are nice in this eatery and on both occasions had really nice waiters, one being Eva. Overall a new nice place for me to have meals on the upper east side.

Best breakfast around!!

By Jenny W |

Loved this place. Great food and good portion sizes. I go every time I go to New York to get a great meal and good service

The best!

By Michala H |

Best breakfast I’ve ever had! Nice staff, good coffee, thank you guys for na experience! We will definitely come back :)

Fantastic food and great service

By STEVEN W |

Our visit was Fantastic the service was fast and the food was amazing. It was so good we came back the following night.

Quick service and delicious food

By Susannah1J |

Pleasant diner decor with a Manhattan theme. Very quick and efficient service. Generous portions of well prepared simple dishes and New York specialties. Very good value for the money.

Great Place

By arntrip |

We had breakfast here twice. Very good food, service, and ambience. Portions were very generous. My California omelette was enough for two. The whole grain waffle with berries an yogurt vey good. Paula had eggs with lots of potato fries. And 4 slices bacon. Upholstered booths are new, walls have very nice tiles of New York scenes. A must go for the 96/Broadway area.

Breakfast and more

By Scruffy R |

We had breakfast here several times. Pancakes, waffles, eggs and bacon. Coffee refills. Excellent and efficient service. Huge portions - but they are happy for people to share. They are open all day - we also popped in for a glass of wine and some cheesecake. Delicious 😝

Classic Diner: very good good

By James G |

This is a great diner very close to 96th street subway station. The menu is extensive, with even a couple of choices for vegetarians. They serve wine, beer and cocktails. And although it's really a classic diner, the decor and ambience gives the whole place an upscale feel. I had an eggplant rotini dish, which was excellent and my wife had the grilled trout, which, she said was perfect. We both shared a huge slab of chocolate cake, which was amazing.

Good food, friendly staff, moderate prices

By NLR51 |

While walking in the Broadway & 104 St area, we walked past this traditional diner and decided to give it a try. It is the sort of place that caters to everyone - it looked like there were a number of tables with families and couples who live in the neighbourhood and have been coming there for years, as well as tough rists like us. Varied menu, large servings (actually, I was not able to finish either meal I had there), fast, efficient service. Disappointed in the blitzes, but everything else good. Had 2 dinners there over a 1 week period. Recommended for a fast, reasonably-priced (bearing in mind you're in Manhattan...), tasty meal.

Super quick lunch

By Mapengobis |

We went here for a quick lunch before going to a concert at the other side of the road. Great food (crab cakes), quick and smooth service.

Felt Like We Were Family!!

By Sonya H |

This is our all time favorite diner. Excellent food, quick service, awesome wait staff, and a managing team on top of everything. Our dinner waiter never wrote a thing down, was always correct, and remembered us from night to night, even how we like our food cooked!!! Our favorite NY cheesecake by far. Go - you won’t be disappointed.

Yummy Home Cooked Food

By Karen K |

If you are looking for a delicious diner with a huge menu this is the place. There are so many items to pick for. The portions are huge. If you are not a big eater I suggest sharing a meal and then order dessert. All of their desserts are homemade and can't be beat. Many selections to see inside the case right after you enter the door on your right. The wait staff is excellent. Once you are seated you will receive water in no time. Look at the menu because the waiter will be back within 3 minutes to take your order. If you need more time, (which you may because of the extensive menu) just let the waiter know and he will return in a few minutes. Once you have ordered, your food will arrive in no time. I don't know how they do it but they can cook a homemade meal in a few minutes. The diner decor is attractive and the tables are arranged in a comfortable setting. It definitely is a great place to eat at and return to.

Great diner

By ScotlandStewarts |

Had dinner here several times during our stay in a hotel just around the corner. Service was always excellent and the food great. Not expensive and loads of choice. My husband splashed out one night with a NY strip steak and declared it absolutely delicious.

Fills You Up!

By AliCat062 |

We nipped in here for lunch last week as were walking by and liked the look of the place. So glad we did. we were welcomed immediately and shown to a table, even though the place was very busy we didn't have to wait. The coffee is very good and our meals were very tasty and there was plenty of it. The omelettes are huge and mine was full of cheese and vegetables, had it with fried potatoes and toast. Two very full and happy customers!

Love this place

By yetta80 |

Everything is good here, classic New York diner. The Manhattan Diner Burger is really good with fries. My personal favorite is Penne Ala Vodka when the chef Carmillo is there,, I get it with chicken fingers,it's enough for two people. The double layer cake is perfect bite of heaven. The silver dollar pancakes are delicious.

Friendly place.

By Josephine B |

Servings are big and tasty. they are open 24 hours and very convenient to travelers. Price is just okey.

Don't miss this little gem on Upper West Side!

By John J |

We stayed at Hotel Newton, which doesn't have a restaurant. No problem, the very popular Manhattan Diner is right next door, and caters for breakfast, dinner, afternoon tea, and supper if you need it, at very, very reasonable prices. It is always very busy, typical New York, but the staff are very attentive, the service is excellent, and meals are served with minimal delay. Start spreading the news and don't miss this 'Big Apple' eating experience. You'll love it!

A staple neighborhood spot

By Sherry P |

I have been going to this place for years and have had a good experience with few exceptions consistently over the years. Prices most recently have gone up however every thing is going up so I’m fairly clear they are within their right to up the ante a bit. It’s a diner. Go there for good diner food. Don’t try to make it into something it is not. Great brunch and local hangout.

Ok for late breakfast

By Amin T |

Had an alright breakfast here. Good service, but not really sure if I will go back. The food was not fantastic. Ok, but not super.

Variety and reasonably priced

By Nello G |

Good strong coffee. Great menu choices and huge portion sizes. Wait staff was excellent and their sense of humor was much appreciated.

Best diner ever

By Miri |

Fantastic food, extremely friendly staff, great location. Best place we found in all of Manhattan. Wished we could take the whole place home!

Good, nice and cheap

By Maximiliano M |

The very affordable prices for what it costs to eat in Manhattan, the Southern-style fried chicken was amazing, the dishes with fairly large portions a neighborhood classic. I recommend apple pie 🍎

Very nice NY diner

By traveler1110505 |

The service was lightening fast. Food in less than 5 mins. Really tasty, fruit was fresh, croissants were huge! Happy to see multigrain on the menu. Had the multigrain Belgian waffles with fruit and Greek yogurt. Perfect portion, tasty, healthy(ish). Kids enjoyed pancakes, bacon good, coffee ok. Excellent friendly service. Definitely be back tomorrow!

Good Food, Good Service

By step12dude |

Come hungry ... portions are large, service is reasonably fast, menu is varied. Great burgers! 2 minute walk to the 96th Street station on the 1, 2, 3 subway lnes.

Typical american dinner

By Dominique S |

Meal (breakfast) was good enough, service was quick. I had a vegetable frittata that was ok but would have been better with cheese.

The Fifties in the Twenty First Century

By Larry J |

On with the food..We all had omelettes with hash browns and toast of your choice and plenty of it..and speedy service...The only problem was the omelettes were quite dry as well as the potatoes....Disappointing...Oh well I guess you can't have everything. Coffee was good though..But that's not the reason that you go there. Would I go back....Sure every place is worth a second shot.

amazing pancakes and chicken parmigiana

By Sophie P |

had food here twice, the waiters were so lovely and friendly, came round with fresh water before you even ordered anything. would definitely recommend, we stayed in the days hotel round the corner and ate here a few times. definitely try the pancakes!

All American breakfast

By PH_994 |

Had breakfast here two morning recently while staying in a local hotel. Just had the toasted croissant the first morning before trying the pancakes and bacon the second morning. Kept me going through a long day of sightseeing! Lovely staff and very quick service.

Great for Breakfast

By Diana B |

We used this restaurant because our hotel gave us 20% discount for it. We were a little suspicious because of this but we had a really good breakfast and coffee - good service and good value. It was also almost full each time we went whch was a good sign,

Friendly staff

By Eileen J |

Had afternoon tea here. Clean, reasonably priced menu and friendly staff. On a very hot day glass of cold water given on arrival was most welcome. the portions of food were large. Strawberry Cheescake was delicious.

Food looked so good, I forgot to take picture.

By Steven S |

Service was great. Food was well priced, delicious and served in large portions. Great atmosphere with comfortable feel. Also, nice clean large restrooms to boot!

Epic food epic service!

By Jessica H |

We used this place every day of our 4 day trip. It was close to our hotel and I do not like travelling for my coffee. What a find. Massive portions no to set you up for the day. Pancakes just like I thought they would be, epic omelettes and eggs with bacon are just a selection of the lush stuff. Friendly staff and helpful with local information. Coffee mug was never empty. Great service and great food. Definitely recommend!!!

Fantastic dinner

By LadiesVoices |

My husband and I had a fantastic dinner here. He had the ribs, I had the blintzes. His ribs were delicious (and plenty of them), and my blintzes were the most incredible I’ve ever had. Our thanks to our server, Cecilia, who was perfect. Lovely smile, a real delight.

Reasonable

By Karen L |

Good choices in menu but a budget diner. Service was great. A full range of breakfasts, lunch and dinner. Convenient for Newton hotel.

Great breakfast and good value

By Lynne G |

Try this place if you want a nostalgic American diner experience. We had breakfast here both mornings during our stay in NY as it was good food and good value. Quick and friendly service and a large selection of breakfast fare. We choose the options that came with juice and a refillable coffee. I had an omelette and home fries with toast and it was delicious and great value for less than 10 dollars.

This diner is great with large portions. The food is very tasty, the waiting staff is excellent. It is situated close to a Subway stop. reasonable prices.

Breakfast

By Jussi |

Excellent place for any meal. If you are first time in Nyc this is one of the places to have authentic diner experience. Good food, big portions and really good service. If you hang around upper west side, try this place, it's really good.

amazing pancakes

By Monica C |

Nice big booths for comfortable dining. Service is very fast here. Staff get to know you. Got to try the cherry pie with ice cream, they also do other fruit pies and an array of amazing desserts.

Fast, hearty breakfast

By Aimdog |

Stayed at the hotel two doors down and needed a quick breakfast this morning before heading to the airport so we chose The Manhattan Diner. I wish we’d eaten there more than just this once. Prices were reasonable and the portions were huge. Service was fast. The food was good… just normal breakfast fare. Hard to screw breakfast up but I’ve been places that have managed to do it. This was just good, hot breakfast. Two of us had the pancakes with strawberries. There were 3 plate-sized pancakes with fresh strawberries. I had the Denver omelet that came with breakfast potatoes, which were really good…not frozen hash browns, but fresh, fried potatoes. Totally recommend.

Great service, fast, reasonably priced

By sandrafowlow |

Had the clam chowder but was more like chicken vegetable soup.... but it was tasty. Large baked potato but could tell it had been sitting for awhile, half chicken was tasty but the white meat was very dry. The dressing was delicious. Service very fast and friendly. I would come back here because it was so reasonably priced and quick service.

Very Bad experience….

By Eliad D |

This is not a friendly place mainly not for a family, we asked for a small pancake for a baby and they changed as $ 12.90 ….the staff said that it is what it is and we must pay for it ! Shame on them…

A Lunch for Two

By Karyoca |

I ordered the Chef Hamburger and my wife went fir the Salmon Salad. Both of us enjoyed our orders. Fast and courteous service. Just below our hotel. It's worth trying.

Great brunch

By Soph E |

Very traditional American diner. The restaurant was clean and had a great atmosphere, and the staff were very friendly. I had the pancakes and the portion was huge! I would definitely visit again.

All good here

By Simmo |

We ate here twice for dinner and twice for breakfast and the food was great every time. The place looked clean and the staff were attentive.

American diner experience

By Marta R |

We were looking for a real American diner experience and these place was perfecto for it. Decoration as in the films and menu even more impresive. The portions are big but ok and the prize is very good. Definitelly recomended

Standard diner with good quality food

By robcurtross |

This large diner has a very attractive modern decor with some interest three dimensional views of Manhattan made in mixed media, heavy on glitter but still quite well done. Large diner menu with of course some variability in the food -- a cheese omelet was excellent, the potatoes ranged from burnt to underdone. Attentive and fast service. Cleanliness was very good, including the modern mens room. On advantage: it is close to the theater on 93 and Broadway.

Nice dinner, close to Days Inn

I ate 3 meals hear and was never disappointed. The salads were large and tasty. Nothing very fancy, but good food, worth the price. But the black bean soup was terrific. I highly recommend it. Nice wait staff. Clean and varied menu. I'd eat there again.

Great breakfast at a great price at an actual diner- they're becoming harder to find!

By Robert W |

Two full breakfasts of 2 eggs, meat, potatoes and toast PLUS coffee AND orange juice- $20 (plus tip)! You can't hardly get that in Atlanta for that price. Typical diner (and they're a dying breed, aren't they? At least in Atlanta.). Friendly, if impersonal service. The food comes out VERY quickly. Eggs cooked perfectly for us both; really decent diner-style potatoes; bacon not really crisp but we didn't order it that way. Toast is toast but was more substantial than sandwich loaf bread. Decent coffee. A couple of the booths were kind of loud; typical diner atmosphere. We loved it and had enough food to skip lunch entirely!

Continued excellence.

By Em W |

I haven’t visited the Manhattan diner for over 10years but returning this week has shown me that they still provide the same quality service and food as always. We enjoyed brunch and dinner and the dessert selection is amazing. Great American breakfasts and a wide range of dinners all at a reasonable price.

Diner

Stopped here for a late lunch. Had a bacon cheeseburger, it was good. The waiter was very nice to us. Got a carrot cake as a dessert and pretty good too.

Satisfied even the most picky of eaters

By Ronnie D |

There was something for everyone! The wait staff was friendly, the food was tasty and the portions rather large! The french fries were definitely calorie worthy! A great place to sit and listen to the locals as well, so you know it is a great place to eat.

Lunch with friends

By Andrew D |

Nice little place out of town for a good authentic taste of New York Great food an decent prices and as always with NYC the portions are plentiful

Rip off

By Phyllis B |

I ordered the Popeyes salad which is a spinach salad with lots of things on it normally $12.95, but I paid an additional $7 because I requested grilled shrimp on the salad bringing the total to $19.95. It was 4 p.m. in the afternoon and they were very slow yet it took me 25 minutes to get my salad. The service was terrible. The salad arrives with three tiny cold grilled shrimp. They were not even hot so it had been sitting in the window for some time. I asked why they were only three Trends on my salad and they said that's all I get. So I was charged $7 extra for three cold grilled shrimp. On top of that lousy service. Terrible experience! Total rip-off! This used to be a great place to go but I do not recommend it anymore it has gone downhill

Best pancakes

By Michala H |

Best pancakes I’ve ever had! Friendly staff, good food, fair prices. Thank you and will definitely come back when in NYC!

Solid breakfast

By Shawnwise |

Restaurant was around the corner from the hotel. Good solid breakfast with polite prompt service, the food was good and came quickly. Only one minor mess-up in the order but food quality was really good. Pretty average price for Manhattan

Excellent!

By Ange |

Service with a smile! We had breakfast here, the coffee and pancakes were lovely. Loved the diner atmosphere too. TY

Fast Service

By MidlifeTraveler2014 |

We ate here a few times during our stay. The breakfast is huge and reasonably priced. I gave it a very good because the coffee could be a little better tasting.

Excellent experience

By Herman R |

I decided to check out this diner as I am staying nearby. It was a Tuesday evening and it was not to busy. The waiter and staff were very courteous and fast. They could not do enough to keep me happy. I ordered the New York strip and I chose the side salad and fries. The steak was perfectly cooked medium rare. The fries were golden and crunchy. The salad was fresh and actually large for a side. I really enjoyed my experience and the price for it all was very reasonable.

Good breakfast place

By Emanuele B |

Nice place for a casual upper west side breakfast. Kids friendly with small stroller parking. I personally like the pancakes with apples.

Burgers and sarnies

By Nicola G |

Popped in when walking past the hospitality was second to none. I had the blt and my other half and son had burgers which where huge with a massive portion of fries each. The blt was tasty and just the right size. Everything was clean and the prices were very reasonable for the amount of food you got.

Amazing

By Lauren S |

Amazing food, good friendly staff, me and my family really enjoyed it, came everyday for the week we stayed in New York and had both breakfast and lunch and both was overall amazing. thankyou :)

Great food and service

By mkar11 |

Went for dinner with my husband and two sons, 11 & 13. The food was fresh, portions were generous, and the staff was friendly and attentive. The seven layer chocolate cake was incredible!

Best place for breakfast!

By Johanna S |

Totally okay prices and super fast service! Nice staff to. It's very American with BIG PORTIONS. we Swedish people didn't expect that at all so it was a challenge to finish the plate haha but it was really delicious! Of you go there around 9 it's hard to get a table but the wait is worth it and you get it very fast to! Only had to wait for 12 minutes for a table 😄

Cannot be beat

By Jeanie L |

This restaurant (and the other 4 that the same owners have) succeeds on all points. The food is fresh and cooked properly, the waitstaff is attentive, the service is excellent, the coffee is good, the desserts are excellent and the people who own this place are KIND. It is a neighborhood establishment and many elderly folks come here midday to pass time and they are treated with acceptance and cordiality. If you should happen to have trouble (unlikely) the managers (always there) will take care of whatever it is immediately. Some of the people working there have been there for decades which means they, too, are treated well and make decent money. If you are looking for a great diner, this is the place to go. It's very crowded on weekends, and you might have to wait, but it's worth it.

Giant portions

By Melissa P |

First night in NYC and we were hungry after a day of traveling. Walked down the street and tried this cozy little diner. Seemed to be mostly locals. Beautiful dessert case but we were much too full to try anything. The portions were really large, enough that some entrees needed two plates. I had a great breaded chicken special that had a fresh tomato sauce. Hubs and son wisely split their gigantic spaghetti and meatballs. Our waiter was really impressive. He seemed to be everywhere at once.

Mediocre and overpriced

By Ronni D |

Your basic diner but costly. Breakfast is ok but food is over salty and expensive. Can do better for the same money

Great American Diner, nice salads!

By Swissgabi |

We stayed in the Hotel Newton next door, and had every breakfast and almost every dinner here.. large variety of breakfasts, from cereals and Joghurts, various pancakes and waffles, bagels with salmon, to full egg bacon and potato plates .. you have options of different breads, buns, juices, etc, make sure you specify what you want or might get a random mood-of-the-day selection (sometime white bread as default, sometime a bread roll .. sometime juice is included, sometime it is forgotten ) - seems to depend on the waiter:) The coffee is bottomless, so is the glass of water served with every meal. For dinners we had mainly the generous salads, wonderful variety is on offer.. but there is s full and varied menu.. enjoy :)

Great food!

By maz1964 |

This little diner was just around the corner from our upper mid west hotel. Doesn't look anything special, but the food was amazing and well priced. Service was very good too. We went there twice over our 3 night stay.

Breakfast is a must while in NYC. Loved the location, service.

By Jvaler77 |

Loved the location, service and the food was delicious! Delivered with great expediency and quality. Good size portions and probably the best coffee thus side of the Hudson. A must visit on any trip to NYC. I'll be back!

large portions

By joannstringer |

Large portions of comfort food conveniently located next to Hotel Newton. You may want to share, especially omlette plates.

Lovely diner

By PamelaVio |

This is a typical america diner but it is well kept. Lovely decor and friendly people. We were staying at the hotel next door so it was perfect for breakfast and for evening night caps. The hot chocolates are really nice (made with milk). Excellent location on broadway close to 96th subway stop. I was quite sad to leave as I truly enjoyed the environment.

Very good breakfast

By Pat |

Very good breakfast for been fast. When we were finishing the coffee, they request us to move, because there was queue

We stayed in the hotel next door and had breakfast here every day. Cant fault it! Great service, good food, can't wait to go back...

Breakfast With A Cup Of Joe & Newspaper.

By carolynthepilot |

Terrific to stop and enjoy an early breakfast with locals and working class. Fast, hot, good service and staff. Eggs done the exact way you ordered them, sides tasty. Waffles & pancakes like mom made. Coffee and tea hot, prices good, location great.

Great breakfasts & fast, efficient service

By George Z |

Diner handy to 96th street subway stop & nearby hotels. Great range of food, with generous portions. Nice decor, with pleasant, fast & efficient service. Don't try to rush you out of there either. Highly recommended!

Nice diner

By LanaFom |

I came here for breakfast. Ordered white egg omelette that was served with home fries and toasts. I paid about $15 which is not bad for NYC. They also have a huge selection of desert, mostly cakes. I personally haven't tried them but they looked pretty good.

Excellent restaurant for breakfast

By SouthernOma |

Staying at Hotel Newton, had breakfast there 3 mornings - it was excellent, fast service, and the prices were extremely reasonable. Highly recommend The staff recognized us, which was a nice touch for a NYC restaurant.

Fab diner

By KCJM |

Great breakfast! Waffles and pancakes fresh big and reasonable priced! Would go again. Typical american diner pleasant staff

It’s a diner!

By ldjs |

It’s a typical Manhattan diner. Very busy and loud, huge portions, great place to meet up with friends casually and on a whim. Can stay as long as you like. This particular diner is clean, has some New York decor and pretty decent everyday brunch items. My friends had giant omelets and finished them. Coffee was fresh and strong. All in all, you can be in and out in minutes if came for a quick bite or stay for hours catching up.

Good food

By Libra_Lady_1980 |

I ordered a burger and fries. It was ok.... it could have had a tad more seasoning. But it was big, and prepared well. My husband ordered breakfast. He said it tasted good. No complaints

Great food and great service

By georginathornton |

We stayed in uptown New York for 3 days and visited the Manhattan Diner every day for Breakfast, the food was gorgeous and there was so much to choose from. Its very much a diner for the locals and visitors alike and would recommend it to anyone visiting the area.

OK for european

By Kai K |

Overall the food doesn't taste like real food, for european person. Food quality is just better in Europe...I would say the omlettes, fresh fruits and orange juice were good, but the other stuff - nope. My husband really loved french toast with eggs and bacon. The worst thing was wholegrain waffle with greek yougurt and berries - only eatable things were berries. Other thing that had no meaningful taste was bagel with Philadelphia. Oh, the only thing I can say I loved was the cake! You get something for your stomach, but you are not like "mmmm deliciousss". Overall I would recommend because the other places in NY are fast food chains - so better eat here some omlette and fruits rather than McDonald's burgers or some hot dogs for a breakfast!

Excellent diner

By physbiz |

The food is not gourmet, but remember it is a diner. Our pancakes and eggs were excellent and reasonably priced. The service was friendly and attentive. We would go back the next time we visit the Upper West Side. The overall rating is in comparison to other diners.

One word AMAZING!

By mulchbin |

Be sure not to miss the gem!! BEST bacon I have EVER had! SO GOOD!! Whole Grain Waffles Yummy!!! Great place!

Great for breakfast

By Dansker58 |

We had breakfast here twice last week as we were staying close by. Lots of choices and specials were offered. Staff was very attentive. Loved the blintzes! Would like to go back for dinner and cakes looked amazing!

Great diner!

By cruisinchristine2017 |

I quite enjoyed my experience at the Manhattan Diner. It had the diner feel to it, which I like. The waiter and the owner were both friendly to me and my order was taken promptly. I ordered a burger and fries, which was delicious. I could not finish my meal (although I wish I could, because it was so good). The burger came with cheese and a special sauce on the side, which I put on the burger and dipped my fries into. I noticed that the restaurant did a good delivery service too, as they were getting lots of delivery orders. I will certainly be back on my next trip to NYC.

Hot coffee

By MrsHedgehog |

Seated straight away. Offered coffee and iced water appeared too. Had the special western omelette with home fries. Himself had the Chalah bread French toast. Plenty of butter and syrup. Coffee refills were hot! Omelette and home fries just right. Orange juice and toast too. Tip was included on bill. Good value breakfast.

Breakfast

Visited for breakfast, fast friendly efficient service, really good breakfast with awesome coffee, excellent eggs.

Fast Service and Plenty of Food

By Doris B |

I have eaten here many times on my trips to NY because of its close proximity to the Newton Hotel. Breakfast is served within minutes of placing an order and wait time for dinner is minimal. Wait staff are friendly and really hustle. Dirty dishes are removed from tables almost immediately after the customer leaves. I ate my dinner here most evenings on my last trip to NY. I did get a little tired of the "sides" of vegetables which seemed to be only carrots, corn or broccoli. Servings are large enough for two so you really get your money's worth. The front of the restaurant is noisy as that is where the kitchen is located and where staff prepares salads, drinks and a large volume of carry out orders. Couriers are always arriving to pick up large orders. I prefer dining in the back of the restaurant as it is much quieter there.

Diner Food

By Ilanfreedman |

I liked the grilled cheese sandwich as an entree, and a piece of chocolate fudge cake for dessert. The banquette was comfortable.

Great Neighborhood Spot!

By gc54 |

We always look for a “go-to” spot when we travel - a place nearby that serves good food quickly at reasonable prices where we can just roll in and sit down without a wait. This is it for the 95th and Broadway neighborhood. Good breakfast , good lunch, good dinner, good desserts - comfort food for the hungry traveler!

Excellent typical Greek diner fare in UWS

By Paulguyinnj |

Very nice relaxing atmosphere. Extensive menu selections as typical of a Greek diner at decent prices for the area. We had the open faced turkey with named potato and corn. The portion was huge. Mounds of moist white meat turkey covered in thick, tasty turkey gravy on a bread base. Good baked potato and decent corn for sides. Also, had the Popeye salad which consisted of bed of fresh spinach topped with tomatoes, cucumbers, roasted peppers, carrots, mushrooms and croutons. A side of excellent balsamic vinaigrette was served as well. The salad was very fresh and outstanding in flavor and textures. Service was friendly and quick. Great choice for diner style food in Upper West Side.

Love this diner!

By VDog2 |

Located right next to our hotel, this diner was excellent: food was great and the staff were all extremely efficient. They were very attentive and friendly, a few especially so - always ready to chat and have a laugh, remembering details about us and our trip from day to day and asking after us with humour and friendliness. They absolutely helped to make our trip special. We had breakfast there every day, ranging from waffles piled with fresh fruit and yoghurt to light omelettes and a big slab of delicious strawberry cheesecake. Evening meals and snacks were just as good: the small macaroni a perfect little filler before going out on the town.

No hype, but taste

By Doc S |

Best Burger we had in town. Friendly and super fast service. The Burger comes with American cheese, Coleslaw, Tomato, Onions and Caramelized Onions! Really excellent. The Special Burger Sauce is a little spicy but also very yummy. Lunch for two was about $40.

Excellent food and good value

By Malcolm D |

We visited for breakfast-the food was excellent and served very quickly. The staff were very friendly and helpful-however we would have preferred a slower more relaxed atmosphere

Breakfast Joint

By best352 |

We had breakfast here on our last day. It is a traditional American diner. The food was fab and the staff were very attentive. Would highly recommend.

Bad service and greasy food

By Nataliec50 |

Went there for breakfast and very disappointed because: 1) eggs were greasy 2) waiter was very unfriendly 3) my meal came 10 minutes later than everyone else with no explanation 4) had to ask for more water and coffee repeatedly 5) waiter became friendly only when he handed us the bill 6) overpriced for the quality of the food

Average fare

By Hope K |

I ordered a frittata which wasn't really a frittata. The menu did say it was a pan-fried omelette and I should have taken that literally. Extremely greasy, tasted more like oil than egg. The potatoes were undercooked. Stay away from the frittata! The pancakes are a better choice.

Diner 5*

By Trudy-from-Holland |

This is a true diner. Fantastic food, great staff, super service. Incredibly fast too. Have been coming here for 15 years now and it never disappoints. Love it.

Totally fine - but nothing special

By betteskid |

I had breakfast here recently and would say this is a reasonable place to go if you are on the Upper West Side. The service is very good and the food is definitely what you would expect. As a person who does not particularly love the "standard" breakfast choices, I didn't find much to be excited about here. That said, this place offers a good breakfast at a reasonable price and the service is very good.

Bad

By mamono |

Quality not great. Burgers have almost no sauce, the choice of beers is zero. Just bottles of bad beers....very disappointing for the country of the best beers in the world.... In short bad fast times.

Your iconic city diner. Good, predictable (even if not inspiring), food.

By NYinNYC |

This is a good diner spot. Been there a long time. Has lots of 'regulars', serves all the 'regular diner fare', which is just about anything one can think of ... Great spot for breakfast (nice size pancakes, good eggs, even good coffee). Lunch is okay, too--a good club sandwich, some salads. I haven't been there for dinner, but I know many who had, and enjoyed their food. Service depends on how busy they are, but overall they are nice, and overall attentive. I'd recommend it if you are visiting with family, or a group of friends, and want to have a good selection that would fit just about anyone's wishes. Endless coffee always good ...

Good food

By Chris W |

Service was impeccable. Attentive and fast. Reasonably priced too. Well worth a visit if you are in this part of Manhattan.

Good service - good food

By MarisaB64 |

This diner is a good place for breakfast and decent enough compared to the other one down the road. Service is brisk. Food arrived hot and was good. Not a good place to relax, read the paper and hang out but good for a quick meal. Clean-ish as diners go :- ) We had breakfast - omelettes, French toast, coffee & tea. All excellent. Not overpriced. If you want cheaper, go to the sketchy one down the road.

Great Food

By Sebastian G |

Had a breakfast there, it was very delicious and the service was very fast. A lot of local people and some tourists are having lunch there.

Good place for breakfast

By SisterMary56 |

Went daily for breakfast as it was next door to our hotel. A good range of breakfasts available. Food okay but as usual there was far too much on the plate.

Perfect America diner

By jplumm |

We had just arrived from the UK so 7:30am felt like midday - this place served the most perfect HUGE classic American breakfasts. It’s reasonable priced, it has a great 60’s vibe to it and the service was great. Our perfect start to our first day in NYC.

Great breakfast spot

By fromaway2 |

We stayed at the Hotel Newton, two doors down. Breakfast at the diner was consistently good, with a huge selection, friendly service.

Yummy! Great food!

By Sanjib B |

We bf as a brunch there (they serve bf all day) - those plain pancakes were so good I can still taste them in my mouth! Yum! Excellent service - great food!

Classic diner experience

By fearanti |

Our kids loved this diner, as did I. A good version of the usual diner fare. Friendly if sometimes a bit brusque service. The guy was impressive though, took our order without notebook and got most of it right

Great food

By alison baker |

Excellent place for breakfast. I had eggs, bacon and gritts. Was delicious. We also went for dinner which was ok, but it didn't blow us away. My hubby had chicken in a basket but it was very greasy and not very meaty. I had a club sandwich and expected the chicken to be hot but it wasn't, little disappointed.

Nice Diner with Local Flare

By mormonmom |

We had breakfast here twice during out NYC visit and it was quite good both times. I had eggs Benedict the first time with perfectly poached eggs and a wonderful, tangy Hollandaise sauce. The next morning was a fritata, which was somewhat different from those I've had in other places, but very good. The clientele appear to be local. The staff were all cordial and service very fast.

Good choice

By Joll32 |

If you want to big and good breakfast try this place is franchise all over NYC Big and tasty breakfast My quessadila was big .. just enough for 2 people!

Good diner dining on Upper West side with reasonable prices

By LisandroVoyager |

The menu is very very long so great variety to choose from. I enjoyed dinner and a friend who regularly visits New York took me. Easy to find right on Broadway near the 96th St. subway station. We each had a full dinner including dessert. The room has been recently refreshed and is well light, attractive and not too noisy. The Hotel Newton is directly next door.

Chef Should Wear a Hair Net

By Adventure755746 |

Visited this diner for the first time after reading the decent reviews but unfortunately had to pick two disgustingly long hairs out of my meal. The first hair was around 10cm long with some sort of dust/lump attached. I found the hair before eating and picked it off without caring too much. The second hair was found as I was finishing the meal and again was very long and disgusting. It's unfortunate because it seems like a great diner with cheap meals and decent service however the chef who has long black hair who worked on 09/08/18 at night should consider a hair net to avoid these health issues. If you'd like to visit this place don't let my review discourage you as there are plenty of great reviews. I would just suggest looking at your meal to ensure there is no hairs.

Consistently Very Good

By pkgreen2018 |

Very few tourists venture into my neighborhood of over 35 years. The UWS is a residential area with many local artists and working class people. It’s also filled with obnoxious rich people who come and leave within a year or so. Thank g-d! Manhattan Diner moved into this neighborhood well over a decade ago and is consistently very good even though many of the locals complain about the escalating prices. They are known for their breakfast menu, great burgers and large portion dinners. During this visit I tried their Chicken Dijon with a creamy mushroom sauce and spinach. All specials include soup or salad and choice of vegetable. They also have a wonderful assortment of desserts. If you want to mingle with the locals (some aging and cantankerous) and have a decent meal, this is a New York institution.
