After seeing this restaurant on elder eats we had really high hopes. The positives was that the brisket had such good flavor. They actually do know how to cook a brisket. The owners are really nice but that does not make up for all the negatives that I found in their food. The negatives is that for a small taco you are looking at between four and five dollars depending on how many add-ons like guacamole you add on to the taco. The second downside is that the brisket and guisada we're both at room temp and not even warm. The bean and cheese with bacon had bacon that was so crispy it was practical inedible. The tortillas were okay yes they are homemade but they're nothing to ride home about I've had much better. The barbacoa I was told was all meat but I did have a massive piece of fat that was practically half my taco plus it was so greasy that it coated my my lips mouth and throat. The wait was over an hour for four basic tacos with ingredients that should have already been prepared and could have been served within 10 minutes. I understand that they're very busy but this is not a restaurant to go if you have 30 minutes only because that will be the time it takes you just to even order. This place has great potential for the food to be really good if it was served hot. If you really had a choice go to Tommy's down the street.

Fantastic, authentic Mexican food! Best juevos rancheros I’ve ever eaten, Small parking lot, so get there early. Small seating area too. You’ll spend the time waiting for your food by looking at all the antique signs and toys on the walls and shelves. And the food?! The wait is worth it! Best cooks in Texas! And Maria was the nicest, most hospitable host I can remember! Just a completely enjoyable breakfast experience! Highly recommend this quaint diner!

I will dream about the chorizo con papas taco! Sooo good! The corn tortillas, we'll all tortillas, are fresh and homemade. Everything I tried was great. They had brisket from tom's bbq that made a great taco! Only downside is it's a small place with only a few tables so be prepared to take away if you need to or share a table.

I love this place , the food always so good . Maria and her family are always so friendly and really genuinely care about you

Well worth getting in the car and getting away from the busy restaurants and overpriced hotel breakfasts. Small, friendly and great prices. Menu is irrelevant. Just tell them what ingredients you like - they will create whatever you want.

The location looks like a dive. There are numerous tin signs on the walls. The place is small on the inside. Don’t let that keep you from going there. It’s about the food. The best Mexican food I’ve had EVER! You’re greeted by Maria’s husband. A big burly man with a great personality. Maria has a great kitchen staff who know what they’re doing. The plates are huge, and the food is delicious. If you’re in San Antonio, skip the tourist spots for Mexican food, Maria’s is inexpensive. You won’t be disappointed.

Eclectic inside, owners are super nice, portions are huge, food is so fresh, service is excellent and friendly, prices are extremely reasonable, went here three times on my visit and that wasn’t even enough, they will make anything you want, and then make it a menu item

Small friendly and authentic. If you are used to the fast food or chain Mexican restaurants then you need to check this place out. Everything homemade and delicious.

Firstly , Food is way overpriced for the quality. Brisket is more like a pulled Pork and dripping grease style. The second time I went, I got charged for another tables food bill, then called back in by her and refunded an amount. Not cool. Also the whole place got yelled at by the husband or owner or whatever big shot bully he is about the parking. I’m Trying to eat my 9.75$ taco and he’s yelling at the place about double parking and parking all the way up to the fence and this and that If you saw this small tiny parking lot of rocks and burnt grass you’d understand doesn’t even make sense Man with their prices they should just build a high superb parking garage in that space. The aren’t the only taco Place in town ….not getting my money anymore after my 3rd visit

We were looking for an authentic Mexican place for breakfast and this was it! About a 5-10 minute drive south of downtown and well worth it. Place doesn't look like much on the outside. Seats probably 30 or so inside and most tables were taken on a weekday morning. We all had breakfast tacos, however, Maria put together a special plate for me with some chilaquiles, beans, meat, eggs, and more. Super friendly folks running the place. We went back a few hours later for some fresh tortillas to take home with us. Total cost was less than $20.

We went to this establishment on a suggestion of a family member. Parking is difficult but worth looking into. Walking into the restaurant you feel like walking into someone's house. The menu is useless because ANYTHING you want as for Mexican food can and will be made. The menu and the walls are suggestions. Service was great and food was even better. If you get the chance, this is a must to visit.

Amazing experience in this little cafe. Tom and Maria are awesome. The food was great. A must in san antonio

On my last trip to San Antonio I made many trips to Maria's for breakfast. It is well worth the short drive from downtown. The people are very friendly and the food is great!

If this restaurant were not recommended you would probably pass it right by. Established thirty years ago and unchanged since. Maria cooks and her husband a retired veteran helps in all ways including making you feel right at home. Everything is made from scratch and the brisket taco is a must. Ask for a recommendation or just tell them what combination you want. The food was excellent. Maria's only serves breakfast and lunch: 6:30 -2:00.

A very small out of the way Mexican restaurant but worth the trip. They had a variety of traditional items that were made in a unique way and we tried three of them and they were all good. Friendly service. Worth a return trip.

Great breakfast. Friendly service. We didn’t know what to order and they were really helpful, saying ‘just tell us what you like’. The breakfast tacos were worth coming back for, tortillas were excellent.

Great Mexican food! This is where the locals eat. Small restaurant and finding a parking space can be difficult. Homemade flour tortillas, carne guisada and smoked brisket taco are great. Very friendly service! Usually crowded and a good chance you may have to share a table with someone else. This is your typical "Hole In The Wall" cafe. Cost..$.

The food is pretty good here at Maria's cafe, I really enjoyed the tacos & coffee the salsa is hot but good it goes well with the food.

I recenty was told about this location about two years ago...I've been coming at least once a month to eat here everything's always fresh homemade great servings wonderful food they even carry brisket sandwiches - tacos and plates I highly recommend this location it's awesome come try for yourself you won't be disappointed

Best tacos for me with homemade tortillas. We did order too much but wanted to try a lot. Great recommendation from local. Nothing fancy but great service and ambiance
Wow just wow
Amazingly good !! Thank you yelpers again for pointing me to the right direction . I had chips & salsa . The chips were freshly made & crisp . I also had a bean & cheese taco , puffy taco with picadillo, & crispy taco with picadillo all were made fresh & tasted exquisite. I will definitely be back & you should give this place a try
