Great atmosphere & Food, perfect for a special occasion

By Krijn B |

We had a more than excellent experience at MarkJoseph. We had dinner for a special occasion, and they did everything to make the evening as special as the could. We had a most wonderfully dressed table and the food was even better. Our Server Michael was very knowledgeable and especially helped with choosing the right portions. He also advised us on which wine to drink, and gave us a suggestion we normally would have never picked. It was sooooo good. If the situation would arise, I would not hesitate to dine at MerkJoseph again.

Leaves Luger's in the Dust

By candacesuzanne |

I have been coming here for years and I've never been let down. As a native New Yorker who loves a good steak and definitely likes Peter Luger's, I have to say that ever since the first time I tried MJ's I've never returned to Luger's again. The steak is cooked to a perfect medium-rare, and melts in your mouth. The creamed spinach is heavenly, and the mussels appetizer with saffron broth is unbeatable. It's pricey, so definitely reserve it for special occasions - but with warm service, tablecloths (yay), and a much more intimate atmosphere than Luger's, this place is certainly a treat!

A great find

We loved it! The atmosphere is dark & romantic & the food was great! It's a little pricey but it was so good that it was worth it.

GREAT steaks and decor

By David M |

What a jewel of a place. You MUST have the slab of bacon appetizer--and after eating here, wait three weeks before checking your cholesterol level.

Nice Dinner

By Michael G |

Visiting New York for work, five coworkers and I arrived for dinner. The food was very good – we ordered a variety of the appetizers, and had them prepare three very large porterhouse steaks which the table split. The sides were good- be sure to get the mushrooms. Dessert was another shared affair with several choices split amongst the table. The service was very good. About the only negative is some of the décor: it appears there was a rather large water leak on the ceiling, and the roofing on the inside shows lots of stains and paint peeling off of it. Overall, a very nice meal.

THE BEST PORTERHOUSE IN TOWN

By Rintana Z |

This is one of the best steakhouse in town, hands down. i tried their porterhouse and share it with friends. I dont drink alcohol and order non alcoholic beers. I know you guys prefer red wine to pair, but to be honest, to pair it with cold beers is perfect. Love MarkJoseph NYC !!!

Excellent Restaurant - Food and Service 5*

By baggers21 |

This restaurant is absolutely amazing from the minute we went in to the minute we left we had the most amazing experience, in fact I would go as far to say it was by far the best meal we had whilst in the City. The meal was a special treat for my partner's 21st birthday, earlier in the year. The prices of the meals were not cheap, but I did not expect this. In fact though they were a lot cheaper than other less good establishments in the more touristy areas like Time Square. We all decided to not have starter and between the four of us order 2 Porterhouse steaks to share, they were melt in your mouth delicious. The sides were also piping hot. The steaks were balanced on two spoons, which I thought was very clever, this allowed the juices from the steak run to the bottom of the plate instead of having sauce. It was divine. Even though we were all well and truly stuffed at this point, we decided to all share dessert and after Key Lime Pie being a firm favourite anyway and then being recommended by waiter Michael, it was decided that we could just about fit this in. It was divine! The menu, as expected with it being a steakhouse was mainly orientated towards steak dishes so perhaps I should note here that this place is most suited to steak lovers. I would also like to make a special mention here to our waiter Michael, and the host that evening. Both of these members of staff were absolutely lovely and just topped of our evening. We really did feel extremely well looked after and thank all the staff at Mark Joseph, especially Michael and the young host lady for their service. Many thanks.

On the mark

By BAL |

Business lunch here with party of four. The menu prices are high and the ala carte approach can run up the bill with little effort. Expense aside, we had a great meal with superlative service that was never intrusive. While this is a steakhouse, no steaks at our table. Instead, Chilean Sea Bass, Soft Shell Crab, Lamb Chops, and Salmon. Plates were all clean at lunch end and positive comments abounded. Caesar Salad was custom made with generous side portion of anchovies. Crisp hash browns and excellent asparagus were additional sides ordered.

Steaks are not so bad

By Irrawan |

We had a steak here as my fiancé loves his steak of should I say all his meat any kind of meat will do for him. The steak I received was nice a little dry for my taste buds and the price was not so favorable yes I will come again as its a nice place to eat at

Just a Tad off the top.

By Peter S |

During restaurant week my wife and I hopped a bus down to the seaport area and went to Mark Joseph Steakhouse. We also went to two other restaurant week venues but Mark Joseph stole the show. Unlike other restaurant week specials, Mark Joseph offered their first team menu and it was great. My wife and I had extras as we usually due ordering creamed spinich and clams on the half shell in addition to our shell steaks which were done perfectly. The wine list had a number of reasonable choices. No doubt Peter Luger is the king of New York City steakhouses and I rate Ben and Jacks next, but Mark Joseph is right up near the top. Definitely better than Quality Meats and Del Friscos and probably the equal of Palm and Smith & Wollensky. Our server was tops, a very helpful and personable young man. You won't be disappointed at Mark Joseph.

Restaurant Week: Not a Deal

By Durak |

I went to this restaurant for restaurant week. While the 6oz filet mignon was well prepared, everything else was embarrassingly cheaply done. The appetizer I ordered was a Tomato Onion plate. It was basically a slab of tomato and slab of raw onion. On a plate. It was something I'd have given to someone I was being passive-aggressively rude to. For 2 people, a prix fixe menu and a bottle of wine it was $120. Not a deal. Not even close.

Great Steaks

By NevskyNY |

Friendly, professional service. Great steaks and quiet outdoor dining near the waterfront in the financial district.

Over and Over Again

By AliceW96 |

There's nothing like it on the island of Manhattan! Elegant setting, good service, and the perfect sizzling rare porterhouse (my choice) for two served on a hot platter --every time. The home fries are straightforward-- brown and crunchy. Couldn't make them better myself. And the creamed spinach is perfectly prepared and seasoned. Do I taste nutmeg? If you can eat dessert, you're a better woman than I! Out of the way for this Upper West Sider, but worth the trip.

perfection

By ABBYSPROUDDAD |

If you are downtown in the South Street seaport area, this is the place for lunch. While typically priced for a steak restaurant, the food was prepared impeccably, and the service was similarly just right. While I have as of yet not tried dinner, I am confident it will be similarly memorable. The steak sandwich was delectable, as was the hamburger , both cooked to perfection.

Great place

By LadyG_0506 |

We went here for my brother in laws 30th birthday last week. What a great spot. As a bunch of steak lovers we can be a bit snobby and this place didn't disappoint. For apps - what didn't we have. Calamari, Wedge salad ( which is chopped not traditional wedge), the slab bacon ( omg soo good), baked clams, tomato with motz, and the tuna tartar - which was on point. As for dinner we all had the porterhouse steaks for share. it was very delicious. For sides we had the potatoes, asparagus, mac and cheese and a few others. Our waiter was such a sweetheart, so made i didn't get his name. The desserts was great also. If i every find myself down there again I will def hit it up.

Delicious dinner on a rainy night

By coughy |

Had a really wonderful dinner last night. The food was delicious and the service was fantastic and friendly. The hostess was very sweet. Can't wait to go back.

I'd never have chosen it but...

By deepoceansw1 |

I was a guest at this unassuming and well-hidden steakhouse just by the Brooklyn Bridge. The bacon starter is worth the journey alone. I know... it sounds weird. Bacon for a starter? I've never had anything like it. The service is charming. The tables are well-spaced apart. The waiter, brimming with enthusiasm, knew all about the food and wine. And he really cared. Food was delivered at exactly the right pace. The steak was outstanding. You're not coming here to save money but if the quality matches the money, which is easily does so you don't care.

MarkJosephs Steak, NYC

By Too Poor 2 |

One of many steak places in Manhatten. We selected this one since it was close to the Financial district. Nice and small compared to others. We sat next to a table of 12 and they were quite loud the whole time. When they left, we could have a decent table conversation. The wait staff seemed aloof and didn't care once we did not order drinks and asked for separate bills. He said he would try. The porterhouse steak, lobster, salmon and sea bass were perfect and quite tasty. The ambiance fairly good for a family dinner or business meal if you are not next to a rambunctious group. Wait staff could have been a little more personable, but it was near the end of the meal session. Parking is on the street or at the lot 2 blocks away. Would have rated higher if we felt the waiter cared.

Good choice for downtown

By EBFnyc |

This is definitely one of the better choices in lower Manhattan's financial district. I cannot judge the entire menu since I had the restaurant week menu which was excellent. Service was very nice and attentive. Great onion rolls.

Gem of a Steakhouse

By FirePenguin |

Stumbled upon this wonderful steakhouse while exploring the Seaport section of Manhattan. So glad we did. From the time we walked in until the time we left we were treated like royalty. Our waiter Michael was AWESOME!!! Recommendations were spot on. The ladies enjoyed the filet mignon (7-8 oz serving size) salad while the guys jumped in for the Tomahawk Ribeye at his suggestion. Steak was cooked to perfection at the temperature ordered. We also chose sides of garlic mashed potatoes and sautéed mushrooms which came highly recommended. For dessert we did key lime pie and New York style cheesecake - both with fresh made whip cream. 2 thumbs up. Our bartender made fantastic drinks. I highly recommend that anyone looking for a great steakhouse dining experience hit this place. You will not be disappointed. If possible ask for Michael to be your waiter. ENJOY!!!!

Delicioussss!

By Taylor F |

My boyfriend and I went to MarkJosephs for Valentine's Day dinner and couldn't have been more impressed. We had a wonderfully personable waitress who was considerate of food allergies. I got the special filet mignon with shrimp in a mushroom sauce-so delicious! Boyfriend got the porter house steak which looked amazing. The portions are quite large so definitely expect to take a couple of bags home. Quite pricey but worth it. Little awkward to get to because of the one way streets but they do have a car service which is a huge plus.

Not worth the money

By Liz |

Went during Restaurant week with a few other couples. Food was good, but small portioned. Waiter was terrible. He never came back to our table to check to see how our food was and had a puss on his face from the moment we sat down to the time we left. Never brought glasses of water to the table even when we asked. Then When We asked for more bread I was given the impression by the look on his face that it was a bother to him to have the busboy bring it to us. We were seated at a table almost on top of the one next to us. The woman sitting there kept looking at us as well was very annoying. Mind you the place was not crowded - we went at 7pm on a Monday evening. Would I go back, absolutely NOT!

Fantastic service, above average food, but did not live up to the hype

By gloandbob |

It may seem strange to only rate this as average, when the individual ratings for food/service etc are generally higher, but I had heard so much about this restaurant that I was somewhat disappointed. There were six at our table, one of whom is a regular and raves about the restaurant. I won't start with the food, but with the service. New York is meant to have top notch service (with the tip % to go with it), but frankly I have not found service, overall, special at all. This changed here. The service was the best. The waiter was knowledgeable, always available but sufficiently in the background to not be overly attentive. He seemed to turn up just as one of us was thinking to ask/order something. Didn't catch his name, but he was larger than life in most senses and said he had worked in restaurants around the world - it showed. The food. The two starters we had between three were excellent (seared tuna and calamari), and the others were suitably impressed. We all ordered porterhouse steak, and it was enormous. However, unless medium rare means something entirely different in the US (and here in particular) to what it means elsewhere in the world, this steak was in my opinion on the blue side of rare. It was tasty, but I have certainly had better. Wines, as has become the norm in fashionable restaurants, were very expensive, inc of tax and tip the cheapest was comfortably over $60, and the cab sauv we had from Napa was certainly over $100. Would I come back? Not if I was paying, personally, but as a business venue I would expect it to generally be a hit.

An excellent meal

By Lisa T |

My partner had the ribs which were amazing, I had a steak which was delicious. The waiter was really helpful and we were made to feel very welcome. Huge portions, excellent value for money.

Just ok

By TKB001 |

The bread comes out warm, but is of inferior quality (dries up and becomes very hard quickly). We had the steak for 2 and opted for creamed spinach and steak fries on the side. The char grilled meat is decent. but nothing spectacular. The service was good and the interior nice. The price was high. The steak for two costs around $80 (excluding sides and drinks) and for that price I would expect some that tastes better than what it was. If you happen to be in the area, then MJ might be an ok option, but not worth travelling for.

Excellent steakhouse

By jsal2001 |

Always reliable food. The filet mignon and porterhouse are delicious. The canadian bacon appetizer is a great way to start off the meal. A bit difficult to get to by subway. Friendly service and nice ambience.

Quite a Show, But Just So-So (and Slow)

By Vinnie G |

It’s a rare occasion when TripAdvisor lets me down, but it did with MarkJoseph. Beef is the star attraction and it looks impressive. The porterhouse is carried out as if it were royalty with smells and loud crackles and sizzles that belie the actual main event. The Tomahawk steak looks like an implement of war and it spans 2-3 feet in length, dwarfing the plate upon which it sits. We had monstrous filets that looked wonderful. But alas, all sizzle and no steak (flavor). I think with even a very pedestrian rub like salt and pepper, these hunks of beef would have been darn good. The sides were reasonably good and generous to boot. Service was painfully slow and my dear bride, usually not one to signal the waitstaff, finally had to succumb to semaphore to get a drink refill. We paid up and the man with two first names did not deliver the goods.

Excellent Luncheon - Business or Pleasure

By cbed90 |

I entertained three clients over lunch. All three of us chose from the fixed luncheon menu and we were all very pleased. The food was excellent, the service prompt and attentive and the atmosphere was perfect for our lunch and discussions. I recommend Mark Joseph Steakhouse for relaxing formal lunch and can only imagine what a great place it would be for dinner. I'll try that next.

My FAVORITE! Steak House on the planet

By Michael M |

I've been to every Steak House in N.Y.C. and a lot more around the U.S.A. M-J's is undoubtedly the "BEST" consistent great food & service. Luger's is very inconsistent and borderline disappointing. That being said, the price is off the charts. Look to spend $200.00 per person for dinner and a couple of cocktails. I'm just an "average Joe", I'm no Wall street tycoon. Take your wife or some good friends for a very special occasion. I promise you, you will LOVE! it. Just don't forget the Gold card.

Classic NYC steakhouse experience

By 50StateTravelerUSA |

Exceptional food and service. Some steakhouses seem to think it's a plus to have grumpy old waiters; our server was energetic and friendly. Every item we ordered was delicious, prepared and served perfectly.

Will not return

By Alex P |

We work down the street and went here for lunch with clients last week. We immediately noticed that the lunch menu seemed to be very expensive and we figured that the lunch and dinner menu is the same (with entree options priced between $30 & $50). At the end of the meal, as we walked past neighboring tables (in the main dining room) we noticed that people had burgers and sandwiches, etc. We were very frustrated that we were not told that there was an actual lunch menu with lunch size portions and lower cost items. The food we received was good but our entire table felt like we were taken advantage of because the restaurant did not present all of the options. Our office is only a couple blocks away but we will not return because they are more interested in our $ than serving consumers needs.

Great Food Great Service

By VancouverCraig |

It was a busy night so we had to sit at the Bar... what great luck. The bartender/server was very educated in his craft. We had multiple appetizers that we shared, one of which was the broiled Canadian back bacon. This was thick slices of bacon with a delightful dip. Wow! Their creamed spinach was also great. This is my second time there in 5 years, Thanks again Mark Joseph.

Juicy!!!

No other words necessary, great service! Sat me right away during restaurant week lunch while I waited for a friend. Steak came just perfectly hot and medium well. Perfection!

Business dinner

By larnelson |

We have had the opportunity to dine at many New York steak houses this by far was the least impressive. Service was subpar, we are never asked if we liked our salad and soup. Never offered fresh pepper, etc. waiter never returned until the steak arrived. We had the porterhouse for two the cut of meat again was subpar. No flavor no offer for fresh pepper salt or anything else that we may have needed. The mashed potatoes were so runny they wouldn't even hold their shape. Extremely disappointed.

One of the best meals ever

By Btw99 |

I have eaten in a lot of restaurants in a lot of places and this has got to be one of the best. The service was very good and the food was excellent, The Porterhouse melts in your mouth, I will come back to NY again just to eat here. Loved it

Good traditional steak house at a premium price

By BlueIslander |

The location is a bit odd, tucked at the end of the seaport. In a cool and showery evening, the area was quiet without the buzz of Manhattan. That said, inside was a different story and our host and server were both friendly and efficient. Portions were large and tasty, though not complicated or fussy. The fillet steak was nicely cooked and had great texture. It was also about 16oz and cost a small fortune. The lobster Mac is worth trying, but the vegetables were not special. A half decent wine list at the entry and mid levels with a heavy focus on California.

Good filet mignon

By Runner78 |

Immediately after a 12 hour flight looking anywhere for dinner. This restaurant took us and fed. Great onion soup and filet mignon 16 oz. Lunch was not bad. But the mussels were not very tasty. And the restaurant was not very pleasant smell Overall, we liked

Wonderful food. Pleasant experience

By Paul_from_VA |

Dinner with adult family. 2 couples. We had the porterhouse steak for 3 and it was fabulous. Plenty for the 4 of us. Cooked well and a great selection of meat. we even gnawed on the bones! The baked potato and creamed spinach sides were a fine accompaniment. Atmosphere was good - not too noisy. Michael, our server, was very helpful. All-in-all a great dinner experience in the Seaport area.

Serendipity!

By Mirja T |

We bumped into this restaurant when looking for a cafe, which turned out to be closed down. What a lucky find this restaurant was! We had the mussels for starters - mmmm! - followed by seared seabass and seafood pasta. Couldn't have been a better choice: delicious, tasty, mouthwatering, scrumptious. One drawback, through: the helpings are huge. We dined late afternoon and the place was blissfully quiet, soft lighting. Service was quick and friendly. Thumbs up for MarkJoseph!

Excellent Restaurant

the food was excellent. The price was expensive however for the quality it was worth it. Great for steak and seafood

Not Blown Away!

By Macman211 |

Dinner on a Thursday with work colleagues proved to be a worthwhile experience yet somewhat unfulfilling. The restaurant was not very crowded or lively. The friendly service was excellent, and the wine list endless with reasonable pricing. The crab cake appetizer was generous and tasty. My medium bone in rib eye was properly cooked but not on par with the peer group of standard NY steakhouses in the flavor department. The portions of sides were not overly generous. "Just ok" does sum up the entire experience.

Great evening!

By Kevin O |

The food was terrific and was only surpassed by the great service! The pork chops were tender and tasty. My colleagues loved their steak. I cannot wait to go back!

Nice lunch

By MyTravels033 |

Nice atmosphere. Upscale/traditional steakhouse feel. Group of 8 of us stopped for lunch. Service was great. Several folks got the Franklin salad -- big portion, with 3 nice pieces of steak on top. I ordered the special - fillet with grilled shrimp and mushroom Demi-glaze with a side salad. Steak was tender, but little over cooked for medium rare. Grilled shrimp was excellent, as were the mushrooms. Side salad was very fresh, and huge. I would dine here again.

Expensive but not great

By DEBurns |

This steakhouse is good but too expensive for what you get. Also we were under impressed with the service.

Memorable Experience!

By Deb S |

We recently ate at Mark Joseph's Steakhouse during Restaurant Week 2016. We were a party of five, including a college student from the area. From the moment we made the reservation on the phone to the minute we paid the check, our experience was awesome. When taking our reservation, the hostess made us feel like she couldn't wait to meet us. Later at the restaurant, she told us that she gave us one of her best servers -- Kristin! Actually, we think Kristin is the best server at Mark Joseph's!!! From the moment we sat down, her friendly and courteous disposition set us at ease immediately. She was attentive in every way -- making recommendations, giving us time between courses, and sharing her outgoing personality with the group. Everyone loved their dinners -- the food was excellent! We travel a lot, and not only does the food have to be good, the service is what will bring us back as well. Because of the perfect combination of service and food, we would not hesitate to dine at Mark Joseph's again. Thank you for a job well done!

Love it!!

By pupsik |

Came in during Restaurant week and we were not disappointed. Generally I avoid steak house on restaurant week because they make portions tiny and give you terrible cut of meat just to cover low cost but not here. The lamb chops, the steak and appetizers were perfect size and we ordered a bottle of wine and extra side of mushrooms which was amazing. Our server was great and attentive to us. Everything was cooked to perfection I love to come back and try other things on the menu.

Great Steak in New York

By dheardzimin |

No doubt about it; excellent Steak! The sides were expensive but they were HUGE - each one enough for 3 people. Their cosmo's were well made - even though they didnt have real cranberry juice, only the dreaded ocean spray! My only two complaints were that we were next to a large group that were VERY loud and their wine list, though impressive - was priced a little high even for Manhattan. Still - the steaks were amazing and the service was impeccable.

general word of advice for all steakhouse outings: if you're hungry, don't get the porterhouse for two. unless you plan on eating the whole thing. they really just give you 1 and a half steaks.

Loved it!

By nknyc15 |

Met here for a very late lunch/early dinner. Hostess was phenomenal😃. The whole place is really nice and food was excellent. We had everything from the mozzarella and beef steak tomatoes to the porter house steak, the salmon and the Mark Joseph salad. Overall great dining experience, very professional, courteous and thank you for that!

Good choice

By Burkhard042 |

We had lunch at Mark Joseph, one of the smaller steakhouses in NYC with a clubby atmosphere, low ceiling and dark wood in walking-distance of WTC and close to Brooklyn Bridge and South Street Seaport. The cheeseburger with mozarella and bacon gave evidence why you should not eat a burger elsewhere: the patty prepared of chopped sirloin and tenderloin, very juicy and tasty without the need of too much seasoning, the buns toasted and full of flavour, all other ingredients also of best quality. The second choice was a Caesar Salad, which was classic. So we were happy and convinced, that this is also a special dinner location.

Great atmosphere and great food!

By seashll59 |

We visited with friends from the city at their recommendation for restaurant week. What an amazing bargain! Friendly staff greeted us as we arrived early. Stopped at the bar to wait for our friends. Attentive bartender who made polite conversation. Robert, our server, was knowledgable, accommodating, and witty. We had a person in our party who was lactose intolerant and he made sure that he was taken care of. All of the food was excellent and cooked to order. The restaurant is somewhat small and full but didn't feel at all cramped. We will visit again on our next trip to NYC.

Very Busy July 4th

By ReddyBro |

Staff did an amazing job handling the crowd on July 4th. The place was full. Food came out in a timely fashion and was prepared to our liking. It is a Steakhouse and if you go anticipating something else you will be disappointed , remember steakhouses are pricey and the sides are huge and designed to be shared. I enjoyed my meal, spouse is not a steak eater so he was less enthusiastic .

great steaks downtown

By Raymond G |

sizzling steak was excellent service was excellent get the porter house for 2 and the bacon appetizer. decor very nice. next to the Brooklyn bridge on Manhattan side. the prime meat was aged and perfect wine list is excellent . Would recommend but only to the people that can afford prime steak of this quality.

Visit Downtown

By Jules |

Visited from the UK and wanted a special meal for our last evening in NYC. Didn't know where to go but we were staying downtown so wanted a good quality meal near to where we were staying. Found this place on tripadvisor and reviews looked promising. This restaurant didn't disappoint. The service was exceptional, the food amazing, my husband and I had the T bone each, the portion was substantial and my husband loved the creamed spinach. it was literally the best steak I have ever tasted, cooked as you like to perfection. i don't usually write reviews but this place is up there and worth a visit.

UNDERWHELMING.......except for the OUTSTANDING SERVICE

By NY3313 |

First time here. Made a reservation on a Saturday night (just in case) but the restaurant was only about 1/4 occupied. THE SERVICE WAS EXCEPTIONAL from start to finish..... couldn't ask for better. I get this is a NY steakhouse so I rated the prices "poor" instead of "terrible" because they are the same at other NY steakhouses. We ordered the bacon which was sort of fatty and burnt, the fried calamari which was chewy, the porterhouse for 2 (and fries) - my son and husband liked it, the salmon (and creamed spinach) which was average and the seafood fra diavolo was typical but flavorful. Everything was nice size portions. The cheesecake was not good (hard in spots?) We also ordered espresso and cappuccino, which they gave us on the house. I would consider going back because of the impeccable service, good tap beer selection and the ambience. The food, not so much.

Maybe it's me, but the steak was just not that flavorful.

Great food and great service

By Vi L |

We've been to this restaurant about a handful of time and every time the food is perfect. Not once did we ever receive bad service. The servers and employees are awesome. It's not one of the more popular steak houses in NYC but it's one of the best!

Best Steakhouse for Resturant Week or any Week!

By carlyjgutierrez |

Our favorite Steakhouse in NYC. We discovered it during restaurant week a few years ago but it has become our go to place for all celebrations. The price is fair for the huge portions and the quality is out of this world. The servers are always very fast and extremely polite. We feel welcome each time we come and recommend this restaurant to everyone we know.

Went to Markjoseph Steakhouse for Restaurant Week

By IzTheWiz |

Went to Markjoseph Steakhouse near South Street Seaport for the first time for Restaurant Week. I had the sizzling Canadian bacon that was insanely delicious, the filet mignon which was cooked perfectly medium rare and super tender and the brownie sundae which was heaven in a bite. The service was superb and overall the dinner was definitely worth the $38. I can't recommend it enough.

Good Special Occasion Place

By Bandito_RN |

We stopped here for my birthday this past weekend while in NYC. Having read previous reviews we anticipated a good dinner but wasn't sure about the overall feel of the place. The waiter was fun and explained the menu well. Service was good. There was almost no one in the building when we arrived (Sunday evening reservations) so it was very quiet. We weren't sure if this was a summer/less residents in the area, a Sunday nights are slow, or a red flag. The food was excellent. Portions were big. Sides are more than shareable. I'm not sure that the price tag was necessarily worth it all, but it wasn't such a drain to make me upset. They did provide a free dessert for my birthday, however, it was berries and cream - of which I don't eat.

Large group handled perfectly

By Marta G |

I have organised a client dinner at this restaurant for 40 people. The staff managed to serve us perfectly. We were so well well looked after in our own section of the restaurant. The set menu had great choice and the food was just terrific. Can't fault this place

great place..worth the search...

By Yardcore97 |

I am bad with directions so it was hard for me to find this place but i'm glad I did...I went with my wife and had a pretty good meal. I was a bit concerned about them burning the steak after I read some reviews but that was unfounded. The steak came out cooked well. The chef could be a little more heavy handed with the salt and pepper but I guess that is a matter of personal preference. Our server was wonderful. Explained everything well and was pleasant without being pushy. If you are looking for a Steakhouse then aside from the salt and pepper thing, which is minor, feel comfortable choosing this place.

Great food just to die for mouth watering steak that is like water in your mouth. the creamed spinach was light and airy and the potatoes splendid. you must stop by here but only if you have the money

Sizzling Bacon!

By Nell W |

We went for restaurant week. That being said, the sizzling bacon and creamed spinach were just stratospheric as far as flavor and quality, so definitely pick them anytime. I’m not giving any dietary advice, so if you are diary free, please consult the server, but seriously, for a “creamed” spinach, I couldn’t taste a hint of diary at all, and they must have used crack as one of the ingredients, because i couldn’t stop eating it. The sizzling bacon was also so delicious, and slightly seared at the edges, even writing this review a few days after eating it, my mouth is watering. Also not to be missed with the sizzling bacon was the steak sauce which our waiter informed us was made for the bacon, more than the steak. If you are thinking of coming to MarkJoseph, then I’m assuming you eat steak. If that assumption is accurate, I don’t need to go into details on the steak, you know what good steak tastes like.

It's not The Palm nor Peter Lugers

By worldtravellerbill |

They try hard-- but it doesn't measure up to New York's best. It is just OK. Service was atrocious on July 4th weekend. The waitress was unsure of the size of the Tuna (she said it was 16oz, when in fact it was 9oz)-- she served ice cold coffee and was really unfamiliar with the menu. Great this place is not--serviceable all around may be the correct word-- there are many better options available in NYC

Place to visit

By DMac404 |

Great place to visit, highly recommend it. Out for a birthday celebration with a few friends. Started with a few drinks before dinner, an excellent dinner(steak just melts in your mouth) & some dessert to celebrate the birthday. Kudos to the whole staff Ingrid, Charlie, Mike & Jared their professionalism, friendliness & expertise in their field was outstanding. Everything from seating us, serving drinks dinner, dessert & entertainment(singing Happy Birthday) was above & beyond made us all feel very comfortable & welcomed. Looking forward to our next visit, already spread the word about this location. I guarantee when you visit you will not be disappointed.

Classic and Perfect...

By VU.L |

I had dinner here 5 years ago. It was my first time in NY and my host wanted to take me to Luger's but instead opted for Josephs's. I am glad he did. I was impressed then, and just as impress 5 years later. Steak: You come here for one thing and one thing only; STEAK! Beautifully cooked to your liking and it comes out pipping hot. Nothing satiates you like the smell of cooked meet and the sound of popping butter. Service: Fast, efficient but still warm and charming. NOT pretentious which is what a steakhouse should be. Value: Amazing value. Amazing value. Porterhouse to share is simply a great deal. Meat: Perfectly aged beef with just the right amount of marbling. NOT WAGYU marbling, but just the right amount to make it super tasty. I am a customer for life. can't wait till my third visit.

Pricey but worth the Price

By Adamskigell |

This restaurant is classic old style New York City. The restaurant seems like it was made in the late 60s but is very clean. The staff and the service is top notch. This will be a pricey meal, however, it is definitely worth the price if you are looking for that type of meal. The steak is all delicious and perfectly cooked and the sides are an array of delicious dishes that pair well with the steak.

Large Portions & Excellent Service!

By msmadbanana |

My family went to MarkJoseph Steakhouse and enjoyed an amazing dinner last night! We ordered 3 bone-out Filet Mignon steaks and a Chilean Sea Bass. In addition to our protein, we order 2 sides to share, steak fries and onion rings! Each steak came out cooked perfectly (medium rare) and the Sea Bass melted in your mouth! All of our portions were very nice and both sides were large enough for all four of us to eat. The steak fries were delicious, but I did wish the onion rings were made with a yellow or sweet onion. Making them with a red onion gave them an undesirable taste for my family. The service was impeccable and the ambiance delightful. If you are looking for a cheap meal, this is NOT the place to go. At $320+ our meal for 4 was delightful and filling, but not cheap.

Dinner Saturday night

By john D |

This restaurant was right around the corner from our hotel (Mr. C ) and we were able to make a reservation thru open table. We were seated promptly at a nice table with a view of the baseball game on the TV. Waiter Bob as he introduced himself was excellent he was attentive but not intrusive. The portions here are huge and we way over ordered but everything was great. Robert even joked about how three of the four of us ordered fish in A steak house. But all meals were to our liking, my only complaint was my halibut steak was a little to heavy on the balsamic glaze but not so bad that I didn't eat it all! The sides are served family style and are very large also. Robert let the four of us enjoy a three plus hour dinner and we made sure he was tipped well. Great spot but go hungry or skip the appies. Enjoy !

the best porterhouse i've had in a long time!

Great Steak for a special occasion

By Bill S |

My wife had a meeting at the World Trade Center and decided to re-visit this place , which we had visited a few years ago. Had the steak (Porterhouse) for 2. Tender and excellent flavor. Accompanied by excellent sides of Home Fries and Asparagus. Keep in mind that sides are for sharing and we couldn't finish what was given to us. Desserts were also outstanding. Very professional service, as one would expect in a place like this.

Great Steak - Busy restaurant

By Alan M |

A short walk from Fulton Station to Water Street and an inconspicuous property that does not reveal the treasures inside. Great steaks. Large portions. Attentive Staff. Rolls and Chilled water kept coming. A definite recommend

Delicious - Delicious - Delicious

By sneedfamily |

I attended this restaurant for lunch with some co-workers and was blown away by the service and very happy with the food. For starters I had the best bacon I have every tasted, the Sizzling Canadian Bacon. It was simply amazing. Two people in my party ordered the Filet Mignon, one had the Bone In Ribsteak, and I had the T-bone. Everything was cook exactly as everyone requested. My T-bone was served very hot, and very juicy. It was seasoned perfectly, very tender and easy to chew. My taste buds were going nuts. Our waitress was very attentive and she even overheard us talking about one of our co-workers who's birthday was the day before and she brought a cheesecake with a candle over to our table. Everything was great, I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for good service and a great steak.

Tasteless Steaks

By golf_n_cocktails |

I ate here for a business dinner. The appetizers were good, especially the grilled bacon/pork belly. The meal itself was very disappointing. I had a fillet. There was no taste. I've eaten hundreds of steaks in my lifetime. This fillet was incredibly bland. It was very odd. Other diners with us had similar experiences. The creamed spinach was average at best as was the mashed potatoes. We finished with an okay cheesecake. There are many other better steakhouses in NYC.

Good Steak

By Max D |

Steak is very good. Very tasty. A big overpriced, but very good. Service is not too bad but can get very busy during evenings. What I don't like is the ambiance. The lamp right at your face is awful (bar seating). Felt really hot and I was sweating. This may be a great thing during the cold winters though.

Restaurant Week

By WereHere |

One of the best deals of the week I order the special cerasar salad , sirloin steak 20 oz on the bone ( cooked perfectly med rare ) my wife had 3 beautiful cooked lamb chops both served w/ sides mash pot & cream spinach deserrt were ok ice cream or mini sundae can't complaint $38 was a great deal also had a side of fried oyster 8-10 perfectly cooked & more than enough for two Food was very good service was a bit slow PS The bar mixes some very good & potent cocktail & gave a genous pour on wine by the glass

Great waiter. Great food

By FamilyTravelJunkkie |

This was one of 3 steakhouses we visited in New York. It was probably the best value in terms of wine and the food was very good. We will be back next time in NYC

Awesome Place for LUNCH

By Vito980 |

Great place for lunch. I prefer sitting at the bar. Tough decision between the lunch or dinner menu. If anything i strongly suggest the bacon appetizer. It was a religious-like experience. Enjoy. Vito P.. Staten Island NY

MarkJoseph is one of the best steak houses in Manhattan that nobody knows about outside of lower Manhattan. It is your typical steak house with superior cuts of meat and great sides. Highly recommend.

From Our Waiter, to Our Meals, to the Atmosphere, Phenomenal Everything.

By AshleyGodoy |

We chose to go to Mark Joseph Steakhouse on a last minute hunt for a superb steak. The group and myself were having drinks and we chose to look up a few really good, but not too expensive, steak houses. We had to call around to find a steak house that would accept our group with such short notice and Mark Joseph's was the first to do so. After walking into the restaurant, I was a little worried since it was almost empty apart from a few business men having drinks and steak in the corner. Our waiter was Gregory, who by far was one of the best waiters I've ever had. He had a good sense of humor and put a little spark of excitement in the air when he came around. I ordered the 12 OZ. Filet Mignon, medium-rare, and it was delicious. Our whole group ordered a different side to share with others and each side would bring enough food for about 3 servings. The baked potato was huge, so I'd definitely advise to share it. I was extremely happy with our service, my water glass was never less than half full. I also liked how, when asked for Coca Cola, they brought out a glass with ice and a glass bottle of the soda. It was easier to refill my own drink than to sit and look for a waiter. Now, wherever I go, I compare to Mark Joseph's. No restaurant has yet to come close to the service and quality of this place.

Elegant, attentive service, nice food

By Robert G |

Beautiful restaurant, very friendly and attentive waiters and staff. I had Oyster appitizer (8), and it was served with lemon, cocktail sauce, large container of horseraidish, and of course tabassco - filling and delicious. Entree - sirloin snd brussel sprouts served on sizzling plates. Steak had a good flavor with melted butter generously on plate. I did not taste any seasoning. Meat was tender. Brussel sprouts were flame broiled with parmassean on top. Very tasty. Coffee was great. Brussel sprouts were very tasty. Overall excellent choice.

Fantastic steak

By Fettucine |

Stopped in without reservation on a Sunday evening and our party of 5 was quickly seated. Service was friendly and efficient. We skipped the appetizers because we had stopped elsewhere for a pre-dinner drink and apps. The Caesar salad was large enough to share. It was tasty but not exceptional. I would have preferred more anchovy flavor, but that's just my preference. The star of the evening was the steak for two that my wife and I shared. Excellent flavor, tenderness and charred to perfection. The sides were OK but nothing out of the ordinary. We liked to see several staff members serving us in unison when our diners were presented. It was a flurry of coordinated activity that was a pleasure to be on the receiving end of. Extensive wine list. Dinner is expensive here but we felt that the prices were in line with the quality of the food and service. We would definitely eat here again if in the Seaport/Financial District area.

TRIFECTA OF DISAPPOINTMENT

By Thomas M |

My Wife and I had the misfortune of attempting to have dinner at MARK JOSEPHS steakhouse recently. We have been to this restaurant several times, and we have always found it to be an average New York Steakhouse. On this occasion, however, we experienced all of MARK JOSEPHS shortcomings. We placed our orders with our waiter, I ordered the sirloin (medium, pink inside), and my wife ordered the scallops. When our plates arrived the steak was underdone, and I asked the waiter if I could have my steak done medium. The waiter said that he would get the manager. CAROL ANN, the manager, came to our table, and told me that "you may not know this, but this how we prepare a steak medium". I didn’t argue, I simply asked that I have a steak prepared the way I wanted it done. They took the steak back, and the side dishes (creamed spinach and hash browns) were delivered. Both of these were cold, and the creamed spinach could have been mistaken for green spackle. When my steak arrived the second time, it had been pan fried to a dry leathery consistency. I asked to see our waiter, and Carol Ann returned to ask me “what’s the matter now”. I told her, again, that this is not what I had ordered, and that my wife’s meal and the sides were cold. We were ready to leave when Carol Ann insisted that another order was being prepared. We should have left. When the order came back for a third time, it was another disappointment. My wife’s meal was still cold, the sides were still cold, and my steak was even less cooked than the original. As we got up to leave, I asked for the check. The manger was obviously upset that we couldn’t understand their level of excellence, and told me that it was paid for. It wasn’t obvious at first, but considering that the restaurant was half empty at a prime seating time, I have come to believe that MARK JOSEPHS may not have the skilled cooks (they can’t be chefs), to prepare a meal to order. I have seen other reviews of MARK JOSEPHS questioning the grade of meat that is served (choice vs prime). To this point I cannot venture an opinion, as I never had the opportunity to taste the meat. The service was poor, and could be attributed to either a lack of communication between the front of the house and the back, or that the wait staff simply don’t care. Managements condescending attitude completed the trifecta, and provided us with a truly uncomfortable evening. Normally I wouldn’t comment on the location of a restaurant, but considering the poor standards that MARK JOSEPHS displays, the inconvenience of it’s location only adds to the letdown. We will not go back.

Porterhouse for two

By Michelle S |

Sadly jet lag had kicked in so maybe didn't enjoy this as much as we should have. The food and service was second to none. But we did visit in the week and it was pretty empty so no real ambiance - sad really as the food and service are worth it.

Very good steak. Disinterested service.

By gs32794 |

Staying on Wall Street and wanted a great steak without traveling to Midtown. We had looked at the menu prior to arriving and I was pretty decisive in ordering. My friend was a bit hesitant in ordering his wine. The waiter displayed impatience with that. This was earlier in the evening and there were only five tables occupied. He was not the only server. Also, I also believe that my decisiveness curtailed his opportunity to upsell. During the meal, he was not attentive. He did not ask how things were during or at the conclusion of the meal. This was surprising in that many reviews gave points to MarkJoseph for less surly serice than other steakhouses. Regarding the food and bar. The Clams Casino was 3/5, the Caesar Salad was 4/5, the sides were 5/5, dessert 4/5, and before and after dinner drinks 5/5. The steaks themselves were 4.5/5 . Overall a good meal, but not a great dining experience. However, I would give it a second attempt, but not in a rush to do so.

Birthday celebration

By Clay C |

It's not the first time we've eaten here and we wanted to go back to celebrate a 60th birthday. We ordered calamari and drinks of beer, rose and red wine and bottled diet coke. For entrees, 2 sirloin steaks, a t-bone steak and a seafood salad. And of course dessert for the birthday boy.

Excellent steak and wine

By Travelerjj_12 |

I was in Brooklyn on business and generally disappointed with the recommendations to eat until trying this steak house. It is on par with a Morton's or Ruth Chris. Good wine list , friendly staff , and great steaks. My colleauge had the tuna steak and it looked great and he raved about it. Worth a try if you are in town.

Best Ceasar Salad in the World

By ladyomaha |

Honestly, this was the best ceasar salad I have ever had. I went back twice in one week just to have it. All other entrees were excellent. Very friendly wait staff and bartender - Jarod was outstanding. Lots of locals visit here and can get loud at the bar. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone near the Seaport area.

Thanks for the tip advice :-(

By fearlessbiker916 |

Rating 5 for food but down rated due to an appallingly rude waiter. Dining to us is the whole experience, not just the food. I will say that the steak is fabulous, flavoursome, tender, succulent, amazing. It was not cheap but it was very good. The service was ok but not special, Shame that when I paid the bill with a $30 tip (which was about 17% and works out to about $600 per hour for the time he spent on the two of us) the waiter loudly proclaimed "oh that's not good at all! we usually get tips of over 20% in New York, I only get paid $4 per hour" I was mortified. Out of embarrassment I made up the tip, but it got no thanks. He ignored us until we left, not even saying good night to us. One ignorant man spoilt what would have been a magnificent meal.

Nice place

By MarioLonghi |

Went there with a group of friends from work. The steak was overcooked, but they were nice enough to recognize and treated us with desert. The sides are good as well. Pork chops are awesome and the portion is well served. Cheesecake is AMAZING.

Attentive Service--Great Steak!

By TiredTraveler |

A friend recently took me to MarkJoseph for a fantastic rib steak. We started with a crab and avocado salad that was to die for. I would have licked the plate. The steak was cooked to perfection. I will definitely come back. The service was outstanding. My only comment for improvement would be the ambience of the restaurant. I thought it could come up a notch.

Mouth Watering... I will return

By EMT_Chris |

I had been before with friends for dinner but this time enjoyed a beautiful, delicious lunch with my wife. The prices are inline with some higher end NYC restaurants but the service and quality is exceptional. The bacon appetizer is tasty, ceasar salad delicious and the ribeye and filet was mouth watering. It is located just a few steps from South Street Seaport. I will be back......

A Holiday Tradition

By TerrapinLady |

A holiday treat and tradition. MJS is a hidden gem on Water Street that is the standard for NYC steakhouse. The staff is extremely friendly and cordial (thank you, Michael and Jarrod.) The food is amazing. For starters, the MJ signature salad is your best bet. The Porterhouse steak for two is incredible. An abundant selection of sides for two, but our faves are the hash browns and mushrooms!

A wonderful visit

By NYFoodDude |

Went for a large business dinner I was hosting. First time there and will definitely be back. Food was outstanding, truly. I have been to every steakhouse in NYC multiple times, except here. Excellent food. Only problem was service started out very slow and uneven. Initial drink order too very long to arrive. Once they were in the groove everything went well. The porterhouse rivals (and dare I say might even be better) than Luger's. Now that was hard to write, but could be true. Creamed spinach and mashed potatoes were perfectly prepared. Bacon was the most delicious, even if a cardiac nightmare.

Great neighbourhood steakhouse

By AgentT |

If you are looking for good "honest" food, which is cooked as you might hope and served by staff who seem to care, this is the place to go. Nestled in a street just below Brooklyn Bridge, neither the location, the premises nor the decor suggest this place is a foodie winner but don't be put off - it has a casual charm, is completely unpretentious and serves food without fanfare which is prepared to high standard and which you want to eat. Inevitably, the steak is the star of the show but the seafood was also well cooked and obviously fresh. The staff could not have been more welcoming or charming - service was prompt and attentive. A keeper!

A Lovely end to a brilliant Honeymoon!

By SianLP |

We booked this restaurant as we were looking for a steak restaurant to round off our Honeymoon before having a night sailboat cruise on the river so it had to be near the South Sea Port area. The food was lovely. We had the fixed menu option which turned out to be good value. For starters, I had Baked Clams which were delicious and my Husband had the Sizzling Canadian Bacon. The bacon was about 30 cms long and the only thing on the plate! (See photo below) It was really tasty but really meaty, it would have benefited from something else on the plate to cut through the saltiness. I had the Fillet Mignon which is the best steak I've ever had. My husband had the 20 oz steak, he asked for medium to well-done and it come to the table more like rare. I raised this with the waiter. He apologised and said he'd cook it at our table. He brought out a red hot ceramic plate with sizzling butter and cooked the pieces of steak to his liking in front of us. The steak tasted amazing, buttery and salty. YUM. Also had dessert which was ok, can't really remember what type of cheesecake it was though. The place was busy and appeared to a favourite with large business men in large suits eating large pieces of steaks off very large plates. Overall, amazing steak and would go back but perhaps just for the steak.

Anniversary dinner

By Ashley Longley |

After just being proposed, this was the perfect anniversary/celebratory dinner. Staff were friendly, we had the giant crab and scallops to start which were amazing. Both had fillet mignon for main, the outside was a bit burnt so we ended up cutting that off and eating the middle as it ruined the taste of the steak. But we were enjoying the atmosphere so much we didn't make a complaint. Even brought us out a personalised anniversary desert, nice touch. If visiting NY again we will return.

Great Steakhouse!!

By EnidV816 |

Really incredible steaks at this Seaport location. Prices are a la carte as is usual for steakhouses so it can add up quickly but it was a very delicious experience! Order the rib eye for two and the creamed spinach!!! Yummy

RW menu was mediocre

By YM443 |

We tried this Steakhlhouse at NYC RW lunch. With $25 03-course prix fixe,we enjoyed appetizer, main and dessert. It seemed great value at first. Me and my son ordered as follows: Appetizer: Caesar salad , baked clam 3 pieces of tiny clam in the greasy oil...completely joke. Main: 14oz sirloin steak This was good.charcoal grilled and medium rare as we asked. Very chewy ,though. Dessert: Again this was a joke. Cheap tasted mango sorbet for my son. 3pieces of strawberry with cream for me. Overall decent lunch but I definitely recommend Empire steak or Smith &Wollensky for RW lunch

Aruba Vacation Reunion And 21 year Wedding Anniversary celebration!!! Awesome!!!

By msdet1529 |

Sorry for the late review... But a one month reunion, after a great yearly vacation in Aruba, us from Florida, and friends from Staten Island and friends from Long Island, got us here for a great dinner and a get together we will not forget!!! Our friends been here before and it’s our first time and what a score!!! Great apps to start, shrimp cocktails, grill thick bacon, the steak and gravy, tomatoes and onion salads, and French Onion soup... all so good, tasty and yummy in our tummy!!! For the main meal, filet Mignons, salmon, bone in rib eye with a lobster tail, sirloin steak for me, and scallops. All entrees were nicely portion, tasty, flavorful, and the steaks were grilled perfectly of medium rare!!! And the great kicker that I love is the sizzling hot plates that keeps the food warm and takes the redness out of the meat!!! Awesome!!! Great service by ROBERT, who was on his game on everything he did!!! Thank you!!! Great conversation with Hostess Nicole!!! Enjoy your vacation!!! Overall, great settle and decor, beautiful roomy round table by the front door, all of the apps and entrees were delish!!! Great service by Robert, and so glad we choose our Aruba reunion and our friend’s 21 year wedding anniversary celebration here!!! Cant wait to come back!!! Merry Christmas!!!🎄🎄🎄 Enjoy!!! 🥩🥩🥩🍷🍷🍷🍽🍽🍽

Order the bone in rib steak

By redcellar |

Easily got a reservation on a weeknight in July. The setting was classic and unpretentious. We started with calamari. The appetizer was enough for one for dinner. We both had a rib steak. It was huge but oh so marbled and delicious. We could have shared the one but I was glad we ordered one each. They were done on rare side of medium rare as ordered. We hardly had room for a side dish. Excellent dry aged beef. I would go again.

Great!

By Cindy S |

The food and service was great. It was a long cab ride from Midtown but worth it.

Mixed experience - though the good outweigh the bad

By AlexL259 |

Overall - the good outweigh the bad - but can be better. I do like the Tomahawk ribeye though it is large for one person. The house dirty martini was superb with the best blue-cheese stuffed olives (even better than Capital Grille which was the best before.) The lobster bisque is also very good, and my son loves the mango sorbet. Lets start with the good - which some may say all restaurants should do that, not all do - Greeting: they walked me to the reserved party - Appetizers: the waitress made sure that we knew the sizing - so, we ordered the right amount - Steak doneness: the waitress correctly nudge me to order Medium Rare Plus versus Medium Rare - Serving: they distributed the side dishes for me. Also offered to cut my tomahawk steak so we can share family style - Attentiveness: After the waitress introduced herself, services including water were prompt and timely. Here are areas for improvement: - Appetizer - while still great, some bacon were burned. The calamari was also not great - a bit overdone though the portion was large. - Service: While the service was great once the waitress started introduction, I was there for almost 10 minutes without water - and I couldn't get anyone attention despite there were only two tables served at the time. - Steak: The waitress was good in her steak doneness recommendation - but my steak was served to another. We did swap the steak once we compared note - as in why my medium rare plus is rawer than her medium rare - but that really shouldn't have happened. - Leftover: My family claimed that one of the leftovers was not packed.

The best steakhouse in NYC? I think so!

By ntebrd |

To give a restaurant review the title I chose to use can be risky at best, but when I consider the number of "corporate" steakhouses in the city and their approach to dining, I am usually disappointed with the dining outcome, noting that although the steaks were genuinely good, there was little else to make the experience above average. Mark Joseph Steakhouse, located on Water Street in Lower Manhattan near the South Street Seaport area, is a wonderful restaurant that offers very good food in an intimate dining setting. The wait staff is helpful, very friendly and professional which always sets a good tone for a fine dinner in downtown New York City, Mark Joseph is the antithesis of the Ruth's Chris, Morton's or Smith and Wolinsky steakhouse environment. And that is precisely why I thoroughly enjoy dining there. We ordered a Porterhouse steak for two, though there were three of us dining and it was more than enough steak for us, with a lovely T-bone for one of the neighborhood dogs we met on our way to the car. But before the steak, we shared two appetizers: Clams Casino and a thick and generous slab of Canadian bacon, which surprisingly made a very nice starter. Warm and crusty rolls were always available and when the waiter presented our steak, it was sliced and served from the platter. We chose as side dishes the creamed spinach and the mashed potatoes, both welcomed departures from the customary bulging baked potatoes often accompanying a meal like this. The Porterhouse was a very good cut, about two inches thick and perfectly medium rare. The house wines proved to be very good. I had a Pinot Noir that was light but had good body and actually went very well with the steak. It was a birthday dinner and the waiters brought in a delicious dessert concoction for the "birthday boy" that was a large brownie with chocolate sauce topped with mint ice cream and a scoop of freshly whipped cream on the side. Again, the three of us shared the dessert and it was more than enough. I have dined at Mark Joseph Steakhouse several times and although the neighborhood is at the tail end of some street construction, it is well worth the visit for a very good meal in a wonderful neighborhood in New York.

Great Birthday Dinner!

By USMA74 |

We came for the lobster tail and lamb chops, and were not disappointed! A little off the beaten path, yet easy to find with the website's directions. The meal was delicious, service great. A table nearby had the Porterhouse for two; it arrived on a sizzling platter and looked delicious. Our server, Suzy, has been at MarkJoseph's since they opened 16 years ago. She shelled and served the lobster tails right at the table. Good wine list and menu. We'd go back.

Really great steaks

By Alan G |

Wow!' What a mixed experience. Dining with a group of 14, service was efficient and the food at least "OK". My rib eye on the bone was a wonderful cut and very well cooked - possibly one of the best steaks I have ever eaten, albeit somewhat under-seasoned. However, the menu is disappointingly devoid of anything approaching "novel". And the calamari appetiser was a long way from matching the quality of the main courses.

All Around A+

By Amy B |

Excellent from start to finish. I made a reservation for a celebratory dinner based on reviews found here. I'm so glad I did! Our server Mike went above and beyond. I had questions regarding the steak options, and he did an outstanding job thoroughly explaining the menu, the options, the portion sizes, how they're prepared, the side dishes.....just everything. I chose the sirloin steak - mid-rare - it was Perfect! My friend had the double lamb chop and she loved it. Side dishes are definitely large and perfect for sharing. We had the hash browns - highly recommended - and the asparagus - grilled. We dined at 8:00 on a Thursday. At that time of night it was not that busy, but I recommend a reservation regardless. The prices are as expected and in line with most of the other nicer restaurants I've seen in the NYC area. It was worth every penny! The service and food were outstanding. I highly recommend it!

Great salmon!

By Gisella Quintana |

On the last day of a business trip in NYC, i was delighted to dinner here. The waitress are fluent un English and spanish for whatever needs. I chose a special three courses menu which included salmon as the main course and a glass of wine. I can't recommend this place enough.

Worth the search

By Fleetsfox |

Rather tricky to find when you don't know the city and failed to get a taxi but worth it in the end. Booked as a special treat for oh birthday and had alerted the restaurant to this fact. They handled everything really well. Complimentary drinks at the bar - great food - we had the filet and a t-bone.....they're big !! Good service by Greg and then the main lady appeared with a superb birthday dessert. She was really helpful throughout the evening and went out of her way to make us Brits welcome. Wouldn't hesitate in returning when we next visit.

AWFUL SERVICE

By joanneg212 |

I used to love Mark Joseph. It better days are in the past! There was staff that were friendly and engaging. Most of them have moved on. One of the current bartenders is just miserable. Sadly he is friends with the owner. He gabs with his friends and the hostess as you wait to be served. This guy (TITO) should NOT be in the service industry. Nasty look on his face if it gets busy and he has to actually work. Lousy attitude! There are better places close by. Nelson Blue is about a block away. Capital grill is about 5 minutes away and is outstanding. Professional prompt and personal service every time! This is the place if you want to impress! I had been a regular. I will never return. If you pay good money and are always generous with the servers NO ONE should be rude to you. It is a shame that the owner keeps him on. It is costing him customers.

Superb NY Steakhouse

By Mark E |

This classic NYC steakhouse, seriously off the beaten path (it's near South Street Seaport) is never full, and is just as good as all the others of its ilk. There are two sizes of filet mignon and the larger one is the size of a softball. All the usual cuts of prime steak are perfectly prepared, and the Caesar salad is fabulous. Great big broiled lobsters harken back to my days dining at The Palm. The drinks are generous and there is a great wine selection. You can also get all of the menu items dining at the bar, along with the bar menu food not available at the tables. Service is excellent.

Great Steaks, Good Food All Around

By Kevin C |

We have been making a tradition out of having an annual extended-family dinner at Mark Joseph's for 10 years now. The food never disappoints and this year was no exception. The restaurant is located on a old cobblestone road just a couple blocks from the South Street Seaport. It is easy to reach from the FDR and there is a convenient parking lot diagonally across the street (which you can have your ticket validated for a lower rate at the steakhouse). The inside of the steakhouse is what you would expect - masculine, brown decor, with fun pictures of celebrities and sports paraphernalia - with a nice bar section for drinks before dinner. We sat 10 people at a single large round table which makes it very nice for having engaging conversations. The hostess and wait staff are always friendly, accommodating and attentive. Our favorites include the Canadian Bacon and Lobster Bisque for appetizers, the Porterhouse (for as many people as you want to share), the sides to share for the table (broccoli and mushrooms are great), and the Tartufo for dessert. The menu is extensive and all the dishes are tasty - we have not yet had a bad experience or dish in 10 years. Excellent!

Best steak

By E CK |

One of the best steak houses in NYC and not only... It really worth to stop by and I guarantee you'll want to come again. Staff is kind, ask for Alex; he is quite professional and friendly as well. Next time in NYC, I will stop by again, that's for sure. Enjoy it!

Great Service and Great Steak

By valeriemabel |

This restaurant is located on Water Street, in South Street Seaport with friends. It is great to see the area is coming back after "Hurricane Sandy." The restaurant has the typical steak house feel and look. The staff was patient and attentive. The food smelled wonderful. The special-pepper corn steak with demi glaze sauce just melted in your mouth. The mixed green salad, was like every other mixed green salad. Their serving of mussels are a generous amount. And everyone at the table enjoyed their deserts. Again, good service and good food. You will pay a very good price. This steak I thought was better then Peter Luger.

Great steaks and service

By j c |

My steak eating friends love this place because the steaks come out sizzling. I am trying to be a vegetarian but always sample a slice or two. I find many delicious side dishes especially sauted mushrooms, mashed potatoes with garlic, creamed spinach, caesar's salad. Never made it to dessert.

Disappointed

By Arnie911 |

Over sized, over cooked, over priced. When the starter is big enough to feed 2 easily and the steak is overcooked and stringy

Nice, but you can do better

By SGS76 |

Just ate dinner at MarkJoseph last night. It was nice, service good but you can do better in other NYC steakhouses. Price is comparable to other NYC-steakhouses. God was just ok. -brea/rolls: good and fresh but you get 1 and asking for another seemed like a bother. -Thick cut bacon to start, excellent. -salad: we both got wedge salads. When you order a steakhouse wedge you expect a “wedge”. Not iceberg lettuce chopped up. -steaks: I had a t- none, my guest a cowboy ribeye. First, this is one of those places that don’t season the meat before they cook it. A little salt, pepper, garlic wouldn’t hurt. Second: this one of those restaurants that like to Char your steak. I ordered rare, my friend medium rare. He got well, I got medium well with both steaks burned around all edges. Burned to the place of inedible. -baked potato, huge but over baked - desert: pecan pie excellent, key lime pie tasted like the freezer or refrigerator. Not good. If your not a steakhouse foody it would be ok and a nice night. But you could do much better. Delmonicos, Wolfgang’s, bobby Vans, Benjamin’s....all much more worth the price!

Close to perfect

Our dinner was superb. The service was attentive without being intrusive. The steaks were cooked exactly as ordered.

Outstanding Service and Porterhouse

By barry_silverstein |

Me and my Associates ate here Thursday night. We called Peter Lugers but the were full. We arrived at Six and the Bar was jumping. We were quickly seated in the elegant dining room. I will say it would be nice if they placed a door between the Bar and the Dinning room to cut out the noise from the Bar, but I presume it is part of the atmosphere. Our server was Extremely Courteous and professional. We had the Tomato and onion salad, which was great. We ordered the Porterhouse for three, although there were four of us. The Steak came out crackling and perfectly cooked and sliced. It was rich and delicious. Really tender and tasty, just perfect. We also ordered the hash browns, cream spinach and mushrooms. The hash browns and mushrooms were okay, but I definitely recommend the creamed spinach. For dessert we had the cheese cake and Shlaug. A must to finish the meal. Let me say, Peter Lugers is out and Mark Joseph is in. It is much more elegant and the same price as Lugers. And the service is simply the best. If you are in New York and want a truly outstanding Aged Prime Steak in a classy and first rate establishment, this is the place to go.

Great steak

I think this is the best steak restaurant in the Seaport area. I've never had a bad steak there and it's always cooked the way I ordered. The service is fast and friendly. It's not cheap but it is soooo good.

50th wedding anniversary

Wow. What a class act of a Restaraunt. I had been given a good recommendation from a friend and thought it sounded like a great place for a special occasion. The staff and food at MarkJosephs did not disappoint. Their attention to detail for everything was exceptional. My parents were very impressed! Thank you and I recommend this establishment whole heartedly.

Outstanding Steaks

By Tom C |

We were looking for a steak house in the financial district and saw there wasn't alot to choose from (compared to midtown!). After researching steakhouses we decided on MarkJoseph and we're glad we did. It's a bit expensive as most NYC steakhouses are but the experience was worth it. The server was very professional and attentive and the filet mignon was cooked to perfection and was one of the best tasting steaks I have ever had.

Excellent steak and service

By YuriZhuravel |

My T-bone arrived perfectly timed rare and melted in the mouth. Great service too. Now I know why people rave about NY steakhouses - there's indeed much to recommend, at least judging by this one. But phone ahead, we found it closed for a private function on our first attempt.

Great Food, Atmosphere and Service

Been to MJ's a few times. Always good service and the food is great. Ive closed a few good deals there and the atmosphere was a definate help

Excellent Steak

By Michael H |

I would put Mark Joseph up against any of the well-known steak places in Manhattan. I had a Rib Eye that was spot on and my girlfriend's filet was also very good. The sides were excellent, the room was very nice, and the staff was top-notch. This is where I would take guests who want a good steak in Manhattan.

Great Seafood Lunch

By Paul W |

The area is being re-developed and the restaurant we had planned to use was closed so by chance (and our good fortune) we stumbled across Mark Joseph Steak House for our lunch. The signs were good, mostly locals eating. We were made to feel very welcome. Iced water and bread served, felt under no pressure to order wine. Decided on hot seafood platter with side portion of fries. Platter arrived with lobster, shrimp, clams done two ways and lots of calamari. Great taste, great food and great service. Bill with tip came to $100 (in my thoughts £60 which for such a feast in London would have been amazing value). Would certainly go back if we ever re-visit South Manhattan. Enjoy!

We left hungry and poor

By JimF33 |

My wife and I had dinner here the other night with a client and his wife. The restaurant had a good NY steakhouse look. Both couples ordered the steak for two and we split sides of creamed spinach, asparagus and hash browns. The steak was good - but not Peter Luger's good - but the cut was small. Considering the meal with two moderately priced bottles of wine set us back over $500 including tip, this is definitely a venue only for a coporate expense account and a very special occasion.s

The best!

By Laura C |

After walking past MJS for years when staying in the area, we finally ate there. And I am mad at myself for all of those missed opportunities. We sit at the bar and the service is excellent. There are usually regulars there, which makes for a great experience. I order the Franklin Salad. The price is excellent for three nice pieces of filet and a delicious salad. We typically order an appetizer or two as well.

Wonderful! Wonderful! Wonderful!

By KarenE78 |

We celebrated my husband's 60th birthday here; we were a group of 14. I chose MarkJoseph because not only is the food great, but the atmosphere is lovely. From my first phone call to begin planning until the moment we left after dinner everything was perfect. Carol Ann, the catering manager, was attentive, gracious and very helpful with planning the menu. Our waiter, Michael, was terrific. His attentiveness was perfect, knowing exactly when we needed something without being asked. And last, but not least, the food (as always) was fabulous. The calamari was incredibly tender, the steak was melt in your mouth delicious. And the mini desserts were the perfect sweet bite to end the meal. The dinner and celebration was everything I wanted it to be!

Pricey, but not bad at all...

By Travel2andFr0m |

Visited Mark Joseph Steakhouse by total accident - we were hungry, walking around and someone recommended another restaurant nearby that was full. So we just walked in and set at the bar (2 menus are offered at the bar - the regular one and a special bar menu). I had the seared Tune which was excellent and my wife felt like a burger - she loved it too. Didn't feel like a steak late at night but they did look good... Good decor, a bit pricey but overall - not bad...

Excellent steaks - at a price

By Bill F |

It is unsurprising that this restaurant has such a good reputation for steaks, the meat was excellent, but prices are definitely on the high side. Personally I would have preferred the option of smaller portions of meat - the cuts are huge. We were in a large group and they did well with service in general although they did forget the baked potatoes and by the time they arrived most people were already well into their meal.

Best steakhouse in NYC

Everything about this place is first class......the deep fried pork belly appetizer is to die for.....great waiters and the best steak in NYC.......

Always A TREAT

By Erica V |

I have been going to MarkJoseph Steakhouse nearly 13 years. Waitstaff has come and gone but the food has always been FANTASTIC. Girls at front are welcoming and they always check to see if we enjoyed our time and meals. We tend to always stop at the bar to converse with the bartenders, which Tito and Jarred always have our drinks ready just like we like it. BACON IS TO DIE FOR! Our steaks were at perfect temperature add a little wasabi in our mash (I'm in heaven) Restaurant week is tricky. We never feel rushed but we do understand it can get really busy. So around this time every year we get in early. We Always Know That The Staff during restaurant week are doing the very best they can. Thank You MJ Staff!

Try the Steak Tid Bits

By FLXrayEng |

You can find them on the Bar menu and they were very tasty. Fast and friendly bartender. Good wine. Huge steaks. I'd go back.

Just OK -

By Hal G |

Party of 11 during Restaurant Week . Some items not available on their special fixed price menu - Tomato Salad - a thick slice of tomato & thick Raw Onion. Would n't give an extra slice of tomato when asked. Not a salad ! All steak sandwich portions were adequate - but not worth the money. Plate fillers - too many french fries. Baked clams appetizer was good. Expected better.

The perfect steak in NYC

By Christian Karcher |

I had a fantastic meal at this restaurant. Nice decor with white table cloth but not too formal (there are sports TVs over the bar after all...) Arrived early in the evening on a Thursday and it wasn't busy at all. The waitress was lovely, served a very generous dirty martini and some fresh oysters as starter. This was followed by the 38oz bone-in Ribey. Being unfamiliar with the imperial system, I only figured out when the steak arrived that 38oz are actually ONE kilogram. Luckily I had only ordered green beans on the side. The meat was perfectly grilled (medium rare) with a beautiful crust and juicy and tender inside. The wine list well balanced but not huge and they have a nice choice of wine by the glass, both from the US and Europe. The double espreso to finish wasn't great. All in all a fantastic experience worth the price.

Excellent though expensive

By GuoYe340 |

We decided we must have a steak before we left New York and booked here. Off the beaten track but an easily accessible location and nice interior, a quiet dinner atmosphere and definitely not lively, which suited us. High quality service and excellent steak. Portions were huge, their food waste mountain can't be good for the planet! Certainly high quality, and you pay for that. We'd return.

Have it THEIR way.

By Oaks3No |

Steak is served red with a cold center. If you want a warm pink center, you'll have to send it back. Out it came -charred black. Everything is a la carte except for the rubbery bread. Move on! They cater to the tourist and expense account crowd.

One of New York's finest

By Easy508th |

I started eating at Mark Joseph when they first opened in 2000-2001. It was, without a doubt, the finest cut of meat in the entire city. My daughter and I ate there on Saturday, April 22, 2017. She dined on lobster mac & cheese and it was out of this world. She loves lobster and mac & cheese so, it goes without saying! She very much enjoyed it and it was delicious. The service was absolutely fantastic. Our server was very informative, very on the ball and knew the menu front and back. She did an excellent job and on my next visit I will request her. All told, I'd give them an 8 out of 10 for my meal on the 22nd.

Birthday Dinner

By Georgiadawg70 |

We had reservations for a 70th birthday dinner for a party of 9 and all of us were much impressed. We were seated and waited on by an outstanding staff, and the food was excellent. So much so, we really thought about going back later that week.

Premier NYC Steakhouse

By TGMerrill |

There are three places where you must have steak in NYC; Luger' s, M. Well's and MarkJoseph's. The first two require convincing a cab to take you outside of Manhattan; MarkJoseph's does not. Located downtown near the seaport, it is convenient and its porterhouse is to die for. Forget Sparks, the Palm or any of the other Manhattan steak places, this is the best on the island.

Excellent steackhouse !!!

By veronique d |

Certainly the BEST Tbone steak i ever had, perfectly cooked and served, with a wide choice of wines from all over the world. Special mention for the cheese cake which is excellent!!! The atmosphere is classy and relaxed at the same time...

Excellent service and the food was scrumptous

By gjfromwa |

We stopped by a bit earlier than our reservation on our last day in NYC. The staff greeted us promptly, we we seated at a wonderful table and from there things only got better. The service was prompt but not hovering. The food from the calamari to the T-bone was divine. The Seafood Fra Diavolo was excellent and the sautéed asparagus was done just right. We may have gotten a taste of nirvana that night. It is a bit pricy but well worth it.

Simply the best steak

Next to my hotel, quite good location. Reservations required, for sure. Homemade original steaksause is awesome. Truly, I'm visiting this place every time when come to town

Not so much

By Napaguy2006 |

Expectations are a part of life. Despite believing I go without them, it is sometimes proven to me that I do, in fact, have expectations. Expectations can lead to disappointment, as in this case. Michael, our waiter, strived to do well. He succeeded in personality, attentiveness, the things we grow to appreciate. His staff, however, failed him in engaging in vulgar dialog and profanity in the bar area where we could hear them, in the management decision to play AC/DC in the bar and have it spill out into the dining room, in the cold bread that was brought to the table with the cold butter, and so on. .. The food arrived properly prepared, problem is they're serving choice beef for prime prices... nice try boys. Came to play ball, didn't bring their gloves. Posers? Probably not. I'm thinking they just haven't the sense to shop their competition, or understand it. We won't bother to go back. You shouldn't bother to go to begin with. Sorry gang. It's called a restaurant scene for a reason. This place is not notable. Stand out, or be left unnoticed. It wasn't bad by any means. It just didn't stand out in a town with thousands of choices.

Best steak ever

By Christine P |

I don't think we have ever eaten such wonderful steaks. They were cooked exactly to how you asked and were divine. A bit more expensive than normal, but for a special occasion, well worth it.

Great Service, Elegant Atmosphere

By Beaconite-MOW |

Lunch for 3. Service was great. Elegant Atmosphere. Will serve Bar Menu items (burgers) in diningroom before 3pm. Expected NYC prices: Burgers+Fries $16-$18, Draft beer $9. There are a few tables for outside seating, but street was under construction.

Tough Time

By Miketheattorney |

I was meeting an old friend for dinner and we wanted a nice steak. We are life long New Yorkers and no strangers to steakhouses, but had never been to Mark Josephs. Everything was going great until i cut into my bone-in rib eye. It was very tough! Probably the toughest steak i ever had in a restaurant on this level. Our night was more about catching up and I’m not one to send back my steak for another go at it, so i didn’t complain. I could see that my friends bone-in steak was also not cutting easily, but i let it go until he finished after only eating half. Yes, his was very tough too. The main course of our meal was disappointing! The atmosphere was nice. The shrimp cocktail was good (but should of been 5, not 4 for $25) accompanied by a tasty cocktail sauce. The sides... onion rings, spinach, and potatoes were good. The steaks looked delicious, but just weren’t tasty. However, the wine was good! We passed on dessert. I see the awesome reviews, but i guess we were just unlucky. I recognize that sometimes you can just get a tough piece of meat and maybe some people would of complained, and maybe we should have.... but we did not. Based on the reviews, this place must do much better on a daily basis, or maybe we got the wrong steaks here. This was a tough disappoint me for me.

13 year itch

By Steven A |

We were looking forward to eating a nice steak dinner at Mark Joseph. We were all very pleased with our food. It was delicious! The cream spinach was delicious, as was the bacon. The Porterhouse was amazing! The downside was the server. If you looked up service with an attitude, our servers picture would be there. He barely greeted the table. We all immediately felt like he was not happy that we were there. We asked him what his name was and he said “just call me waiter”. We were all taken back by his response. The ladies at our table thought they could get him to loosen up, but he was consistently cold. I asked how long he worked there and he said a long time “13 years”. It maybe time for a change of scenery for this waiter.

Satisfying from beginning to end.

By lippies |

My wife & I had dinner at Mark Joseph yesterday. I usually read reviews about a restaurant before going. I honestly will say that it was better than we expected. Food was great. The service was wonderful. The ambiance was romantic. Appetizers were really good. The lobster bisque soup was delicious. We had the porter house steak for two and it was the best steak we had in a long time. The drinks are done just right. not too strong or watered down. I recommend Mark Joseph to whom ever read this. You will not regret it. We will definetely come back again.

Serious money but worth the spend

By bendy37 |

We had dinner here and although it was seriously expensive, it was well worth it. If you want steak, you're going to be paying around $50-60 per person and this doesn't include the sides. The porterhouse was sensational though and the house special desert, totally worth the calories!

Great Steaks and People

By Weight01 |

We went for a Birthday after arriving from London on the recommendation from the hotel. They were informed, but missed it off making any comment or wishing happy birthday. That said the food was superb, the Canadian Bacon Strip was yummy and my fillet steak was like butter. A few days later when Carol Anne found out that they had missed off the Birthday (they Hotel informed her), she invited us back for drinks and appetisers which was very thoughtful and we really appreciated the gesture. It is service like that that makes you want to go back and therefore I would highly recommend this restaurant, the food and the service from Carol Anne

Very Peter Luger's like...

By Eric H |

Very Peter Luger's like (or so I am told), where you order steaks for 2 - 5 people. I personally like having my own steak and having it cooked the way I like it. That said, steak is pretty good.

It is a toss up between a great owner and wonderful staff or the food. Both amazing.

By go4it52 |

I have been dinning in New York's top rated steak house since i was a child. I am now 65 and you will not get a better steak than at Mark Joseph Steakhouse. My personal favorite is a black and blue bone in rib eye and the Mark Joseph Salad. What ever you order is top notch. My mouth is salivating just writing about it.

New Year’s Eve 2019

By Tony A |

We came over from the United Kingdom and ate at the restaurant on New Year’s Eve. The service was excellent and food was even better. Us Brits need to understand the tipping system as our waiter asked us at the end of the meal if the service he gave was bad as we only gave a $50 tip on a €500 meal. (They suggest a 12-18% minimum in all food outlets as a tip) He did not provide rubbish service, the whole experience was very good. A must place to visit.

Empty restaurant and service can be better.

By Asics21 |

When we arrived at this restaurant, it turned out we were the only guests in the dining area. It was a Monday night and raining, but I still expected a bit more buzz. There were a few people eating at the bar and watching Telly, but thanks to a glass wall, you did not hear the noise. Although we were the only guests, I was not impressed by the waiter, who was not very welcoming. The portions were very big, but did not stand out by the quality, i.e. both the penne and the baked potatoes could have done with a couple of minutes less in the oven/frying pan. The sauce served with the calamari was however outstanding. Restaurant not easy to find due to construction, but not sure if it is indeed the must-go place at South Seaport. There are better places, with a livelier crowd and more welcoming staff.

A Hidden Gem

By Jenn N |

The restaurant was a bit difficult to find. It was down by the seaport but they were doing construction. It was hidden down a road that didn't seem to have much else around. Once we found it we loved the place. The food was incredible and large portions for a fancy restaurant. I had the penne au gratin and had to take half of it home. The service was incredible. My husband got the steak - they brought a hot plate first, then one server brought the sides and another put the steak on his hot plate.
