CUTE

Charming and welcoming atmosphere, good cuisine - except for the overly dry salmon - the staff is very courteous, and I recommend coming in the evening when the atmosphere is more joyful.

Merci Marseille

By arubaphil |

My wife and I and friends attended a Broadway play and then had dinner at Marseille. We have eaten there before but it was a first for our friends. Marseille is a French bistro with a full bar and outdoor seating. The atmosphere is light and cozy and reminds you of a Paris French bistro. We began with French onion soup, sauteed spinach and the bistro salad as appetizers. The spinach was savory, the salad fresh and dressed perfectly and the soup rich with a delicious gruyere topping. For entrees we chose the steak frites, rack of lamb and the lamb tajine. The steak was grilled perfectly with crispy fries, the rack juicy and the tajine savory with couscous and apricots. We shared a creme brulee and a pot de creme for dessert. Waitstaff was friendly and efficient. Marseille is a great choice for a delicious French meal.

not so good

By Ettore77 |

a bit of a disappointment. We had expectations that were not fully met. The restaurant is spacious and quite nice. Absolutely average food. Dishes poorly cared for, average quality. The price a bit high compared to the quality served

Lots of activity, but not rushed

By Kathryn G |

There is an excellent, extensive wine list and a very knowledgeable sommelier. His recommendation was spot-on. I had the steak frite, and when I said "I'd like it very rare" the waiter immediately said "Oh, black and blue." I knew at that point I wouldn't be disappointed, and I wasn't. Everything was great from the wine, to the appetizers, to the entrees, to the desserts.

Upscale Brunch and great overall menu

By jkelmo |

I had a friend visiting who wanted to meet for a nice brunch and I was recommended to try Marseille. It was a great choice. They offer a very diverse brunch menu beyond the typical eggs benedict and pancakes options usually offered. I had the short ribs and polenta which was delicious. My friend had the Moroccan Shakshouka, also wonderful. They offer a bottomless cocktail option, and their mimosas are made with fresh orange juice. Our server was extremely, friendly personable and professional - a sometimes rare combination. I would definitely go back for brunch or other meals, as I had in the past.

Outstanding!

By jjflan |

Prior to our Broadway matinee, we chose this nicely situated restaurant for lunch. We're greeted with a smile and seated quickly. Our wait staff was quick to the table with warm baguettes accompanied by olive oil and butter. Started with a truly great Bloody Mary! Nice menu offering a prixe fix lunch as well as a diverse variety of options. Considering it's Manhattan, prices were far from " outrageous". Our choices were the tuna ncoise and traditional eggs Benedict. The salad was large and prepared as ordered. Tuna was cooked to perfection. The eggs Benedict was served well with a choice of salad or fries. Kudos to our waiter Jason S.! A true professional! Knowledgable anf very personable. Look forward to returning!

Excellent place for a pre-Broadway show brunch!

By muszekfan |

This is a great restaurant, especially if you're going to see a Broadway show… They are efficient and very professional here and the food is consistently good. Never disappointed with the Eggs Benedict in particular. And I have to say we had a great piece of cheesecake as well!!

Nice dinner before the Theather

By Steve S |

A bite of a mix up with the reservation as we were 5 and they had us for 5 in the bar. A bit tight but worked. Would recommend the main room in any event becasue the pre theather bar scene is 3 deep, They sent us several appetizers to compensate which was nice. Trout and halibot were a hit as were the steaks. Nice bottle of wine and all was good. Apple tart was a bit dry and hard so the only disappointment.

Very busy pre theater. Great location relative to Broadway. Make a reservation for sure.

By Mike G |

Sort of classical french food near the theater district so the place empties out about half an hour before curtain time. Nice menu and good service.

Great preshow dinner

By Wander |

Came here like a lot of folks for dinner before a Broadway show and had a great time. Definitely can recommend their prix fixe set as ordering just an app and an entree will already get you basically to that price point. Fantastic steak frites (though unfortunately is not as good the second day like a lot of other ones I've had). All the desserts are divine. The one thing that was less than awesome was that we informed the restaurant it was someone's birthday in hopes of having a candle brought out in their dessert and we told them at the beginning of the meal and they did not do that.

Good food. Service was a little off.

By Arlington7175 |

We MIGHT return. This sits at 3.5 stars, but not quite 4 stars. We ate and drank plenty for a decent price. We had two glasses of wine and two mocktails. Also we shared a salad, order of tuna tartare, grilled octopus, mussels & fries and rack of lamb. The standouts were the grilled octopus and rack of lamb. The aiola is what made the octopus so great. Also, the lamb was well prepared and flavorful. I liked the mussels for their size and simplicity of wine sauce and garlic. It wasn't revolutionary but solidy well prepared and tasty though. Service was not horrible, but we did have to do a little prodding to get answers and there was a minor slip up due to the lactose allergy. The total price with tip was $194. Given the amount of food and location, this was a solid value. As I began the review, we might try it again to see how service is on the next go round, which can often be a dice throw. If you like solid brasserie faire and are in the neighborhood, this is likely a good pre-theater choice for you.

Friendly French restaurant

Enjoyed many meals here. Lots of French and Mediterranean choices on the menu, with friendly swift service.

Hidden Gem in Hell’s Kitchen

By Valerie C |

We had a wonderful experience here. We were celebrating our anniversary and we found this hidden gem of a restaurant in the Hell’s Kitchen area of New York City. We loved the look of the menu and the venue looked fancy so we made a reservation for that night. We started with the recommended Rose wine Peyrassol which we enjoyed. Our appetizer was the duck liver mousse which was plenty to share with me and my husband. It was delicious! Our main course was Le Grande Bouillabaisse for 2 people and it was fabulous! There was lots to share and we even had leftovers! Sorry, no room for dessert but we were treated with Sourgal Mascatto which was also delicious. Jose was an excellent server as were all the helpers that also served our table. Highly recommend!

A great meal, super convenient for pre-show dinner

By CWPNova |

Wonderful all around. The tuna starter was out of this world. We had a rack of lamb special- I want the recipe. We ate at the bar and had a lovely time talking with the other guests. The bartender was great- friendly, attentive and made solid recommendations. We will return next time we are in town

Very good food and service, nice ambience

By AndyTheGameInventor |

I would call it good, not great. Service ane ambience were very good, and prices were fair for French cooking in NYC. I had the bouillabaisse and this was my first time tryng this dish, and I was a little underwhelmed, but that might just mean I don't like this dish. I had the regular size and it was a very generous portion with lots of seafood and fish. I found the sauce had a slighty chalky texture, I don't knoe if this is normal Also, the fish was clearly fresh and there was quite a bit of it, it didn't seem to be a perfect match to the sauce. Accompanying vegetables were quite good. I'd be willing to gve it another try with another dish. My beet salad was excellent and also generously portioned.

Nice find near Theater District

By mtroner |

This is pretty convenient to the theatre district and we had a lovely dinner here. Although we dined outside, the dining room is charming and I look forward to eating in it post Covid. The food was good. The goat tart appetizer not warm enough but enjoyed greatly. The duck and skate grenobloise were big hits. My chicken was not as crisp or tasty as it should have been and the Rosti potatoes were likewise lacking in the desired crunch. The dessert was excellent. The ice cream and sorbet were incredibly good tasting. We had a bottle of Turley which was so fairly priced that the sommelier and I chatted about it. Actually the extensive wine list is so well priced for NYC you could really call it a bargain. All in all a great spot for dining near the theatre district and I recommend highly.

French Bistro charm and delish!

By PaLuv2travel |

I was recently in NYC visiting a friend who lives there and we went to Marseille for Sunday brunch. It immediately felt like a French bistro - such a nice feel on a chilly January Sunday. They started us with a tray of small muffins and bread - both so delicious! We ordered a blueberry muffin to share. I wasn't terribly excited about the prospect but this one was out of this world! I was ultimately so glad we ordered it. I had the Pain Perdu - which was a savory French toast with mushrooms (I think shitake) and sauce, and two sunny side up eggs. Melt in your mouth! My friend had the California omelette and loved it - brimming with avocado. We also started with a blood orange mimosa for $10 but we wanted a second, so quickly converted that to a bottomless one for $19. This is near the theater district and I would highly recommend. Our bill was $41 each but that could have easily been less if we had skipped the mimosas - or had kept to one. I would definitely eat here again! I heard their dinners are wonderful, too!

Delicious; a bit pricey

By LAW1224 |

We sat outside on a busy summer Saturday night. Warned that we might be bothered by street people walking by (it only occurred once), we stayed outside in this Hell's Kitchen eatery. I ordered the scallops and my husband had the shrimp. Our co-diners had soup and risotto. While the portions were fine, they were not generous or skimpy. The wait staff were attentive without being overbearing. The prices were a bit high, but hey, you're in NYC in the summer.

The food was great but Amber’s service put it over the top

By Molly M |

Fabulous and fun brunch. We sat at the bar and had outstanding service from Amber. She was attentive, adorable and very knowledgeable about the menu and drinks. All in all, an excellent experience!

Delicious food for reasonable prices and fine service for pre-theater.

By ChesapeakeSailor |

Jan 2 2025 Based on the menu and reviews, we chose Marseille for a pre-theater dinner. We didn't have a reservation but sat at the bar. We had first-rate service from Madeline -- close attention and course timing, as well as menu suggestions. We chose two appetizers each -- onion soup, tuna tartare, and the goat cheese/beet salad. All delicious.

Great breakfast

By Reuben Mann |

Fast service. We had breakfast for 2 days in a row Value for money. Delicious food. They used proper tea bags with leaves in a tea pot. They did freshly squeezed orange juice. Speak multiple languages fluently Polite and funny staff. Only downside was that there was no free WiFi.

French battle

By Nils G |

Looks nice European and looks cozy too. Spacious table smooth service. Map looks fine ... with a French stroke. Drink beer and wine are pretty pricey but like everything else in Manhattan you get used to that. When it comes to quality food, I have to say that it looks better on the menu than on your plate. A bit for me ‘ fast food de luxe’ but without looking at the bill absolutely nice with the bill included I think price quality ratio is very skewed but well it takes some getting used to in Manhattan 💲💲💲💲

My how Hell's Kitchen has changed for the much better!

By Jack A |

Gone are the days of the seedy flesh shows! Marseille is just the ticket for a gathering of friends after a Wednesday matinee performance of "Caesar & Cleopatra"! BTW, if you haven't seen the limited engagement of a wonderful version of the Shaw classic, it might be too late since this run at Theatre Row ends this week. Back to Marseille: The ambiance, cuisine, and staff combined to keep us all delighted with our evening (late afternoon) experience. I never thought how truly good Pommes de terre frites were until everyone at our table helped devour my side order of them! This will be my new "go to" bistro whenever we find ourselves on the edge of Hell's Kitchen (no longer a neighborhood to be avoided!)

Perfect Restaurant For A Pre-Show Dinner

By MrsAstor |

This was a great dining experience. We had a 4:30 pm dinner reservation to make a 7 pm curtain. Carlos and Selma were very attentive, knowledgeable, and pleasant. They served us with ample time to walk to the show, but did not rush us. Cocktails, appetizers, dinner, and desserts were delicious. Great atmosphere in the restaurant itself. I was celebrating my birthday, they shared their good wishes during dessert. Highly recommend Marseille.

Poor service, overpriced food

By Mktpro99 |

We went for a pre-theatre lunch. Ate outside which was hot and noisy. Service was very slow. Omelette was just warm and overpriced. Cappuccino was excellent.

Perfect

By BBBBTravel |

Service, ambiance and food were excellent. Conveniently located close to Broadway shows. Comfortable and welcoming. Crab salad very good.

Pre-Theater Dinner

By KSL |

This was a great location for a pre-show meal. We arrived at the restaurant later than we would have liked, but the waiter made sure to get our order in quickly and the food came out with plenty of time to spare. We especially enjoyed the hanger steak, and the delicious and beautifully presented cocktails.

Decent French bistro

By orrdin |

Our experience at Marseilles was generally positive but not all dishes were on par so that’s why I gave it 4 stars. The menu is typical French bistro so don’t expect anything adventurous. Service was friendly and fast.

A step across the Atlantic for a flawless meal

By Elefthera |

This restaurant feels like a taste of old Paris, just what we wanted. Service is good. Food is authentic. Because of Covid, we had been homesick for France, and Marseillaise was a step across the Atlantic for flawless meal.

Not very accommodating, but ended up okay.

By HappyTraveler997 |

We had a dinner reservation here at 5 PM on a theater night they show at 7 PM. Due to unbelievable December holiday traffic, we arrived except 5:17 PM, two minutes past the 15 minutes grace period, and our table had already been given away. We were as courteous and kind in acknowledging that we were late. But our kindness was not acknowledged were rewarded with a response of sorry "can't help you." We were provided no option for a table. We were however able to secure two seats the very end of the bar. While less than desirable, this ended up being okay. The food and bar service was quite good; but I would say that my review and ratings is muted because we felt so unwelcome after arriving a few minutes late.

Old time favorit for a quick pre or after theater dinner.

By elcorte |

Situated around the corner of the theater district this long lasting restaurant ticks the boxes for a good dinner. I mostly order a croque monsieur. They do a nice one.

You want to go here!

By Sheila Marie G |

Beautiful setting. We both had a superb meal before going to the theater. Our server, Jose, convinced us to try the special duck appetizer and were we glad he did! It was unique and delicious. Each of our entrees (Lamb shank and Beef short ribs) were excellent in preparation and quantity. Lovely wine and a delicious lemon tart. Good coffee. Reasonable pricing - a bargain for the food and service we received. All of our servers were very well trained. It was clear Jose was VERY busy but we never felt neglected.

Good.

By Kristin M |

Food was good. Drinks were good. Service was good. Nothing worth 5 stars, but nothing wrong either. I’d probably go back when in the area, but not going out of my way either. Probably would’ve been happier with one last bottomless mimosa before we headed out, but it is what it is & there is a clearly stated 90min limit. Overall, it was good. Give it a try, but don’t go terribly out of your way.

No idea what they are doing

By Charles W |

Too bad this restaurant is so bad. If you can't cook a burger at the right temperature you might as well hang it up. Started with the French onion soup. Disappointed!!! The burger was well done and I ordered it Rare. The wine was never poured correctly. The pasta looked like an amuse or small appetizer instead of an entree. The wine list was extremely overpriced. This is a shame since our new Condo is 2 blocks away at the Orion. We are going to Portale this evening where I know I can receive a good meal

Beautiful!

By Olivia C |

Been here twice this week for the wonderful food and service! Fresh food very tasty and reasonably priced. We had Christina looking after us and she was very knowledgeable and provided us with many recommendations for our trip! The other staff were fantastic also! Overall a fabulous experience will be back.

French-ish

By Cassie H |

We went before Moulin Rouge because it seemed appropriate. I can’t really call it French cuisine. It was more American version. The food was alright. Definitely affordable. Just didn’t blow me away

Brilliant Food, Excellent Service

By Donnagee |

Our Thanksgiving meal at Marseille in New York City was amazing. I had beets to start, then the Roast Turkey main and finished with a pecan sticky toffee pudding. What a treat the whole meal was from start to finish. Being from the UK we weren’t sure if we would like what was served but every mouthful was delicious. I would highly recommend Marseille for food and service.

Lovely French Restaurant

By traveleater2017 |

Nice French Restaurant with good service and nice ambiance just off from Broadway. We went here before our show. My daughter had the calamari but would have preferred it to not have so much batter on it. She did enjoy the steak and frites.

A welcome respite from the banality of Times Square

By Patrick P |

Marseille is a slice of France in Hell’s Kitchen. Popular with theatre goers, it is advisable to book ahead during peak pre-show hours. The staff are friendly and accommodating (as they should be) and the decor is much like bistros in the Marais. I have a favorite dish there, the Poulet Provençal, which used to be slightly different as Poulet Grandmère. But despite the menu change, I dined for a third time at Marseille while on a recent conference trip. This is French comfort food done right. I recommend the Apple tart for dessert, if you are so inclined. Good people watching and a nice bar with not-overly-talkative bartenders (a personal preference). I often sit at the bar, but the window tables afford the best entertainment.

Excellent lunch and service

By Flowerpowerfromtn |

Absolutely a fabulous experience all around. Johnny’s service was excellent and prompt. His recommendation of rose wine and apps were on cue. Crab meat appetizer, omelette with goat cheese and spinach, fries, and bread - all perfection. Would highly recommend.

Very disappointing

By Stuart O |

The only disappointing dining experience on our visit to NYC. One of us ordered a ‘bouillibaisse’ which contained very chewy shrimp and pieces of fish. She left it. Another ordered a steak which seemed to be cut into the shape of a bone for some reason. She like someone on a neighbouring table could not eat much of this. I had a very indifferent dish. A great let down on my birthday.

Breakfast Was Magnificent!

By 3Dtravelpro |

Marseille is new to opening for breakfast, in fact Trip Advisor doesn’t even note they are open from 8 to 11 am for breakfast (Monday to Friday.) But you should go! It was like being at a wonderful five star hotel in a Paris! Johnny M. was our waiter and he was exceptional in his service and attention to detail. We had omelettes which were fluffy and decadent and the coffee was so good. Unlimited refills and he even asked if we wanted more “to go!” We also had crispy and thick bacon and a croissant that was warm and delicious. We will definitely go back to try lunch and dinner but don’t overlook breakfast!

What A Disappointment

By MarkTwain1910 |

We had a 7:15 PM reservation on a Friday evening for a party of 8. The good news was that we were seated early. Drinks arrived, appetizers arrived. So far, so good. The French Onion Soup was outstanding. Time passes on. Approximately 30 minutes after our appetizer plates were cleared we has still not been served our entrees. I waved over the waiter and inquired as to when we might be served. His response was: "Well you got your appetizers, I will check.". That was the first indication that service would be going down hill. Dinner was eventually served with the entire party very hungry. Anyone who order something other than the restaurants signature dish, their Bouillabaisse, was satisfied with their meals. The Bouillabaisse was very, very expensive at $39.00 and not worth it. The bowl was hot and the soup was cold. Someone had heated the bowls and forget to cook the Bouillabaisse, the root vegetables were hard as rocks. To the restaurants credit we complained to the manager who removed the cost of those items from our bill. The disinterested waiter now arrives to inquire of our interest in dessert. No one was but we wanted tea and coffees. He says he will be right back....15 minutes later he returns to take the tea and coffee order which then arrives 10 minutes later. It should be noted that the theatre crowd has already departed and the restaurant was no where near capacity. I so not think this was a staffing issue as the waiter did not have that many tables. I cannot comment on the staffing in the kitchen. Overall an expensive disappointment. I would not recommend this restaurant under any circumstances.

Theater Goer Delight

By Susan M |

A gem of a restaurant in the theater district of NYC. Great French bistro. Service good, food excellent. Serves all the classic French bistro items including excellent Onion Soup, Bouillabaisse, Steak Frites and classic dessert like apple tart. Excellent champagne by the glass. Good location for the theater goer. Service slowed towards the end of our meal, but overall a very positive experience.

Delightful French Bistro

By Yvonne B |

Went out for late afternoon lunch (3pm) before an 8pm show on Friday. It was restaurant week and I got a delightful heirloom tomato tart and a trout that was delicious. Panna cotta for dessert and topped off with a delicious Riesling recommended by the Somm. Morgan was my server and she was the best. When I told her I was going to the Barbra Streisand concert, she was super excited. Which was adorable, because she's under the age of 25. The only weird part was all three courses came out at the same time, so we had to put the trout under the heat lamp, but it was still delicious and perfectly cooked. I'm excited to try breakfast next ;-P)

Great Saturday morning brunch

By angi6 |

Went for Brunch on a Saturday morning. I recommend going early or be prepared to wait. We waited at the bar and were seated within 20 minutes. The service is attentive. I recommend the Creton but in reality everything was delicious and fresh. The croissants are soft and buttery. The apple chicken sausage is a must have. I will definitely visit Marseiile my next time in New York.

Not French

By cynthiafrompotomac |

If you are looking for a real french bistro, this place is touristy. The french onion soup is bland and tasteless. Almost as if it was frozen and heated. The bread was soggy in the soup. The burgers were overcooked, and the pasta dish was a side dish size. We will not return. Do not waste your time.

Excellent Moroccan food near theater district

By Louis G |

Wonderful french and Moroccan food, great variety on menu. Every dish was well displayed and very tasty. Service was good. A block from 44th street theaters

Reliable French style

By Archibald M |

We have been going to Marseille for years, and occasionally think we ought to look elsewhere for a moderately priced French restaurant. However, we have not been disappointed before, or thiis time. Every dish was nicely done, from salad, to escargots, to steak frites, to duck confit, to profiteroles. And, the wine cellar is quite impressive, with a few at reasonable (to me) prices. My only complaint about the service was that our bottle of wine didn't arrive until we were almost done with our first course. Servers were attentive and helpful.

Only stars for ambiance

By Lillet08 |

Best thing I could say is service was very attentive and ambiance cute. Food was disgusting. Lamb chops were edible with downside being dressed in this bizarre, artificial-tasting pomegranate sauce. Sauce so gross and weird mashed potatoes(? I think) - that I pushed all of that aside and just ate lamb. People should note that when it’s only tourists around you - bad sign!

Good option near Broadway

By Carol R |

The food is delicious and it's a good option for a post-musical break, as it's open until a little later. The onion soup is an excellent choice and the steak and fries were also very tasty. The cuisine is focused on French cuisine.

Very bad service and management

By David P |

Took clients to Marseille for dinner and food took over an hour after ordering to come, unfortunately I needed to leave when food finally arrived and left my party. When I confronted the manager while leaving, he made excuses that a steak frites prepared medium takes more time and that I did have an appetizer. Expect better customer experience at this price. Think they were slow playing to serve more drinks. Very bad experience. Will never be back. There are better places in NY.

Last night of our vacation meal in New York

By davide79_12 |

Had an excellent last night of our vacation meal here with friends whilst in New York. Great food, drink, atmosphere, and service. The food was perfection. Definitely would return here if visiting New York again in the future. Recommend to all.

Outstandingly French

By What |

Outstandingly excellent French food, and with very friendly service. Delightful décor, but rather too noisy inside, but we ate at a table outside so no a problem for us. For starter I had asparagus with Hollandaise sauce and morrells (I skipped the egg, which was on offer). It was light and perfect. My wife had the humus as a starter, which she pronounced delicious. We both had the confit de canard with an excellent ragout of flageolet beans as a perfect accompaniment. Overall, an outstanding meal. The restaurant was rather full and service a little slow, which did not bother us one bit but some theatergoers got a little antsy.

Great Oyster Happy Hour

By Paul |

Love Marseille! Usually stop by for the “Oyster Happy Hour” which is excellent value! Oysters and a bottle of Rose Cava is always a good idea! Have had other items also, and totally recommend for a solid theatre district option!

Fantastic lunch

By bettebluemoon |

We went here with friends for lunch and were blown away by the food. My husband had the beef bourguignon and said it was the best beef he's ever had. I had the steak salad and it was wonderful. Generous portion of steak and lots of excellent blue cheese. My husband and a friend had the French onion soup which they said was very good. One friend had the avocado omelette which she said was great. Another friend had the chicken curry sandwich, again excellent. It came with homemade chips that were still warm– yum! Generous portions and not outrageous prices for the city. Nice ambiance in the restaurant and good service. Definitely a new favorite in the Theater District.

Excellent French Bistro

By iansF1522WU |

Booked same day, table right in middle of restaurant, food excellent, prices also reasonable for food and drinks. Excellent wine list + also well priced unlike many places close by that trade on their location.

Overall a good experience

By Flo |

We went on a Saturday afternoon around the Happy Hour of oysters time without reservation but the receptionist accommodated us, table for 2, even though later - for dinner - the restaurant was fully booked. That was much appreciated. I’d been in this restaurant in 2019 and had some oysters and nibbles which had been very nice, so decided to come back. We had as a starter the baguette with butter and olive oil. Afterwards a dozen of oysters (1,50 each). To drink a bottle of an Italian white wine named Dama (around $48/$52). I kept going with the oysters, had half a dozen myself, to finish the wine and the other person had an onion soup, in a very much French style as expected. What makes me give 4 and not 5 stars is due to near to the end of the meal the waitress approached our table to ask if we wanted some more wine and when I asked for the wine list to choose another wine. We wanted to decide whether we’d order it by the glass or just another bottle as we usually do. In a subtle way, it felt like she kinda refused to bring the list, ignoring I’d asked for it, saying ‘so, the ones by the glass we have are these these and that’. I wanted to see the list and have time to choose, perhaps a wine that could go well with a desert. I understand the good intention of giving recommendation but at the same time there’s a way of recommending and at the same time bringing the menu so the guest can choose what’s best for them. In the end, we got one of the wines by the glass she’d mentioned but price wise it wasn’t worth it as each glass was around $16/18. We had baguette and butter, 18 oysters, a bottle of wine + two glasses, an onion soup, duck liver’s mousse with toast - the bill was $160 (service not included). Overall a good experience but could have been a bit better.

A Touch of France in NYC

By sstepans |

Affordable, fabulous French food. From the warm, crunchy rolls to the Crème Brûlée- every bite was amazing. Wonderful service. Looking forward to returning. 😊

Very nice evening

By Jeffrey D |

A nice French bistro with tasty typical fare and very good cocktails. Nice atmosphere and excellent service. “Vibrant” sound level.

Maruf the Magnificent!!

By Karen S |

Maruf was such a great server! Thoughtful & prompt. While I waited for my friend he said , “ you must have some bread” while you wait! Very sweet.

Eggs Benedict at Marseille!

By Cynthia M |

We try to go to this beautiful, comfortable little French place at least once on each trip to NYC. We had brunch there this trip. I had the best eggs Benedict I have ever had! The secret was the absolutely delicious smoked salmon. Highly recommended.

Civilization!

By JLOTheBookGirl |

There is nothing nicer on a warm evening, especially in 2020, to be sitting outside in a comfortable chair with a glass of wine, knowing that a yummy traditional French meal is coming and watching the world go by. My fourth visit either as a solo diner or with a friend. I'll be back again.

A Little Bit of Paris on 9th Ave

By Hugh |

You can't beat the Marseille for a French fling on 9th Ave and 44th. The food is authentic and traditional, the prices are right and the atmosphere will transport you to Paris. I have passed this place for years on my way to somewhere else, thinking it was too "touristy" Well it's real! A great stop if you're a native or a tourist.

3 1/2 Dots = good

By L H |

Lovely little French bistro. Decent service, though rushed when crowded. Good hummus and branzino. Tables a bit cramped.

Wonderful Parisian Cafe Experience

By James W |

Overall excellent dining experience. Service was friendly and attentive. Despite the restaurant being busy this Saturday lunch, we never felt rushed. Nice menu with a good variety of offerings. Food was delicious…we had the special short rib eggs Benedict and omelettes…all four in our party were pleased with their selections. Ambience was lovely with a real Parisian cafe feel. Lovely way to spend a Saturday afternoon with bottomless mimosas!

Alright food but outside means outside, even in -10oC

By Lynn Melina E |

Food was okay but cold by the time it reached our table with the disgusting aroma of people smoking weed nearby, still expected to pay the same as those paying to be in the warmth of the restaurant without such smells.

A delicious lunch before the matinee

By odea5 |

Visited for lunch prior to a matinee at August Wilson Theater (a convenient walk away). We had omelets that were delicious and accompanied by a light salad with tasty dressing and toasted hearty bread. The service was excellent - our coffee cups and water glasses were never empty and the food was served quickly. We also had a basket of breakfast breads that satisfied a sweet tooth without being overly sweet. We loved the decor - it was light, bright and cheerful and on the hot day we were there, the air conditioning was lovely (not too cold).

Decent pre-show dinner

By NoIberostarFan |

Waiter asked if we were going to a show (thank you) and managed us accordingly. The 5 meals varied in interest and quality a lot. The Steak Frites was the smallest $28 non-filet steak I’ve ever seen. The pasta was a modest portion. The chicken paillard was simply massive. Ended up being $50/person with drinks.

Delicious!

By Joanne L |

Came for dinner and was not disappointed. The mushroom tart appetizer was delicious. My husband said the escargot was also superb. The main course was branzino and rack of lamb. Both were yummy. Dessert of blueberry tart and shortbread crust was perfect. Financier cake was good but not as good as my tart.

Great Breakfast! Johnny provides friendly service.

By Pat R |

Marseille has recently opened for breakfast. The food is terrific. The croissants come fresh. Flaky and buttery, a true taste of Paris. We dined outside, but love the indoor atmosphere as well. Many visitors to mid-town stay east of 8th. Go one block further west to 9th off Times Square and try this. You'll be happy.

Post theatre dinner for 10.30 but we were late. Pressure to order quickly (fair enough) and we did. But why did the servers grab our appetizers before we were done? Fish well over cooked.

Retro look, contemporary cuisine

Prompt friendly service which I appreciated after a long day of travel. Could quietly enjoy the quiet as we got an early meal. Enjoyed my wine and fulsome bowl.

Ooh La La Francaise

By Cheryl K |

Marseilles is a lovely French Bistro on 9th Avenue & 44th in NYC. Soups and sauces are great, food cooked to the temperature you request. Only disappointing dish was the escargot as we felt it had way too many breadcrumbs.

EXCELLENT QUALITY AND GOOD VALUE

By CarolBahamas |

My wife and I enjoyed dinner, food was excellent. Restaurant was not too big and the noise level was fine, they have outside seating but in March noboby chose this option. Wine list is very impressive and expensive but we found a bottle we liked. This seems to be more of a local's place and there seemed to be a number of people having business dinners. I was surprised at the reasonable prices.

Surprise mate night dinner : worth it

By Danny N |

Chanced upon this place being open late at night because of Bastile Day after Broadway show when almost all restaurants in NYC were closed. Indoors it's an eclectic but nice gem. And one of the best beef short rib I experienced in NYC.

It's a top choice for NYC residents too!

By Stephen H |

One recent disappointed diner remarked that it's a bad sign when there are only tourists around you in a restaurant. How she could tell, I don't know, but I can vouch for the fact that this is a restaurant of top choice for NYC residents. Staff are charming, the wine list is as thick as a Bible, and the menu is reasonably wide without being precious, notably including some treats such as excellent oysters and terrific Long Island duck breast. Time was when there were over a dozen duck farms in LI, but now now there is only one remaining, producing exceptionally delicious birds. Corner tables are perhaps a little dark, but this is certainly a place to return to.

Delicious and romantic dinner

By Catherine S |

We went to the Marseiile while staying in NYC for our anniversary and thoroughly enjoyed our time. The restaurant is romantic and we sat at one of two red bistro tables from Marseille,France which were nice. The other tables have white table cloths. We each chose from a special three course menu for Restaurant Week and were glad we did. I had a summer risotto with zucchini and corn, followed by a mushroom and truffle dish. My husband had fresh tomato wedges in an herby vinaigrette and pork chop schnitzel. We both had the chocolate pots de crème. a delicious end to our dinner. The service was smooth and the staff was friendly.

Get Your NYC French Swagger Here

By Brian Lee |

This a usual “go to” restaurant for us when we visit NYC. The food is good as is the customer service. I like the swanky NY French vibe and it is so close to the theater district. I recommend this place. You can be dressed up or come casually attired.

Great breakfast

By samcker |

Had the Lorraine Omelette. Omelette was so fluffy. Good amounts of cheese and onions. Mimosas were very tasty. Would go again next time I’m in the city.

Great Dinner!

By jpete |

On our first night in New York, we dined at Marseille, and we were glad that we made a reservation way before hand as it had quite a crowd on a Wednesday evening. The atmosphere was very pleasing resembling a Parisian restaurant. Our friendly and professional waitress made a number of recommendations from the menu as well as the specials for the evening which assisted us with ordering our dinner which was fabulous and obviously of a French origin. If you enjoy a fish soup, give some thought to the "Soup de Poisson" which was terrific. All in all, a perfect evening in a fabulous restaurant.

Not an authentic French restaurant

By Guillaume C |

As a French guy living in Florida and in NYC for the weekend I wanted to find an authentic flFrench restaurant and picked Marseille… Bad pick: it’s not too bad restaurant but certainly not French. One thing you can easily figure out when you’re French is if you are in a real French restaurant or pretending to be French, Marseille is unfortunately from the second category. Again not too bad but disappointing

Great food, great service, great atmosphere..a tad $$$$$

By waayback |

Overall a great experience. Great unique cocktails, oyster happy hour, delicious food. However kind of pricey and portions are on the small size on some dishes. I got the roasted chicken, it was 1/2 of one of the smallest birds ive ever seen. It said "roasted potatoes" I was served 3 halves of fingerling potatoes. Think about that.. 3 puny potatoes and a tiny 1/2 of chicken for $29??

Paris in NYC

By Prescottdiner |

Marseille is adjacent to the theater district. We have always found their food to be praiseworthy. Their prices are reasonable for NYC. They outdid themselves this time with a calves liver special that was the best I've ever had. This will be one of our go-to restaurants when visiting NYC. It has the look, feel, and taste of a REAL Paris bistro.

Turista trap

By miguel l |

Service very good food BAD wine good pate foie grs I thiink it was chicken liver carpaccio 30g & 200g of lettuce Tuna bowl 30 g of tuna 300 of lettuce you say under $30 dlls it cost me $ 200 I would be embarrassed to advertise it .

Today was not Marseille’s finest hour

By whirldpeace |

I have such a love for this place I can’t give it less than 4 stars. I’ve been dining here fairly regularly for years, so I have lots of great memories of super delicious meals. However, today it did not deserve the accolades. Every restaurant has some disconnect now and then, so I’ll go with that. Matinee show ran over so had to cancel my reservation and show up an hour later, hoping they could accommodate; I was grateful they did. I was hankering for steak frites and that’s what I ordered. Was delivered to the table fairly quickly, despite a full dining room. Steak itself was not exactly the NY strip id been accustomed to seeing, as this one was thin, fatty, and undercooked at medium rare rather than medium well. The flavor was okay, but the amount of marbled fat I was very disappointed. I left the large pile of fat in front of the frites hoping that staff would acknowledge its presence- they did not. If I wasn’t absolutely starving (hadn’t eaten since 9 and it’s after 5), I would have returned it. That was something akin to a diner steak, and not in any way a compliment to the steak. Do better, Marseille

Went for brunch/breakfast prior to seeing Come Fly Away

French toast great. Avocado toast not so great. Great location. Enjoyed the atmosphere. Wait staff very accommodating.

Hopes dashed

By aks_travels |

I was really looking forward to a French meal while in New York for business. This restaurant was close to my hotel so I thought I'd try it. My waitress was good and the wine was fine (not a big selection by the glass), but the food was NOT the traditional French food I was hoping for. The escargot were tiny and bland and the duck confit strangely sweet (with maybe a hint of clove?) and under-seasoned compared to anything I've ever had in France. Duck confit is my favorite dish in the whole world, but this was not at all how I've ever had it. It was as if the chef removed the delicious fat that makes it "confit", and replaced it with some sugary, under-salted version. If you've never had real French food maybe you won't know the difference, but this is definitely "American-ized".

Elegant place and Excellent Food

By pacolino |

Nice ambiance and the Food was excellent! The octopus and the steak frites were awesome! My friends had the bouillabaisse and were very pleased as well!

Slow

By Chris P. |

We went for brunch before a Saturday matinee. This is another theatre district place that is slammed with customers early and takes way too long to give you your fairly uncomplicated brunch order. They have outside seating and we reserved it, but then they didn't have outside tables available when we checked in. My omlette was fine but not worth the 50 minute wait. Skip it.

Good food

By debcoh |

We ate lunch and it has a French ambiance/decor. Somewhat of a varied menu. The portions were considerable and not overpriced. The lump crab salad was good but totally not what I had expected The salad were also good portions.

Pretty

Beautiful Paris bistro interior, also outdoor seating. Elderflower spritzer light and refreshing. Nice staff.

Paris in Manhattan

By Emily E |

Marseille is close to theaters and food and service are dependably good. The last meal I had was onion soup and haricots vert and shared pate. Reminds me of France!

Good, Solid. Just not special

By herb v |

Good, Solid French but nothing spectacular 3 For dinner to hang out and catch up. Seated promptly, not rushed with helpful and attentive service. Started off with the usual appetizers - Oysters (for the other 2 guys, not me), Escargot (That was for me), Tuna Tartare. Did not touch an oyster so more snails and tuna for me, both good. Main courses - two Steak Frites, one pasta. Hate to say - both Steak dishes came out cold and had to be sent back. Handled well, but still... My pasta was OK. Overall, good, just not great.

Excellent Place for Brunch, but a bit noisy

By TexasTraveler |

Four of us had a wonderful Sunday Brunch, varied menu, good (but disinterested service). All meals good...would go back...but waiter never really interacted with us except to listen to our orders. Room was very noisy...but found a way for table of 4 to talk.

There are better places with out glass in the food

By TCBunny |

The experience was ok-until we found glass in our dessert. My husband found a big piece of glass in his dessert after he bit into it. Thankfully he didn’t swallow it. We told our server, she told the manager. No manager apologized, or even came to talk to us to be sure he was ok. Our server took $10 off the bill.

Just OK

By bigglow |

I feel that this should be a better review but I cannot bring myself to more than a Just OK, The service is good and the restaurant is really lovely but the tables are very tight and it is very noisy. The menu needs to be a little more varied and they need to do more with what they serve. I had the Salmon as did one of my friends and it was a piece of Salmon just put on the plate with a spoonful of lentil. That is it. It needed more, a sauce some vegetable something to make it seem worth the price. My husband had a special which was Short Ribs and he liked it very much and the plate itself looked nice and the portion was good and even that came with something not just thrown on the plate. Our other diner had the Bouillebase and loved it. The bread was as hard as a rock and very difficult to chew without drinking water with it, The drinks were just awful and the Bartender needs to learn how to mix. The wines by the glass are very expensive. I understand it is close to the Theatres and that is why we choose it but there are so many other places that are so much better. Gotta say I am not going back.

Great food with a Parisian feel at a fair price.

By T0mmyBahama |

Stumbled on Marseille Restaurant as being close to our hotel, to celebrate our daughter's birthday. We could not have made a better choice. The food was excellent, the wait staff helpful and efficient without being intrusive and the price was very fair for a restaurant of this general nature. It had a very Parisian atmosphere, which we enjoyed, although be prepared for a rather noisy environment. The selection of dishes was good - two of our party opted for the Grand Bouillabaisse - said to be for two people, but it could have fed four. The third person chose the Tagine Marseillais (Moroccan braised lamb shank). Both dishes were excellent, but the Bouillabaisse could easily have fed the three of us with leftovers. Appetizers were very good and we shared the sorbet for dessert - in our case mango, raspberry and a selection not on the menu, pear. All were superb and a great way to end our meal. Excellent food at a fair price. Highly recommended.

A beautiful restaurant - 2 blocks from Time Square area.

By James M |

This is a beautiful restaurant with a definite French design, also with a New Orleans energy. I ordered the classic Eggs Benedict. This is an item that is harder to find prepared in an exceptional way. At Marseille, the Eggs Benedict were good. This is a good place to have a casual meal with friends. I would go again......that's a good review.

Fantastic!

By anne luyet |

We had dinner New Year’s Eve at this great restaurant. We had the 60 us$ per person menu. Starter, Entree and dessert included. Only one word for it: excellent!!! Every dish was perfect, with very fresh ingredients. I highly recommend Sirloin Diane for whom likes rare to medium rare meat. The wine list is immense and there’s a choice of wines going from 40 us$ and up. We had an excellent Italian Prosecco for 50, and a Syrah Red wine for 42. The restaurant is nice and clean looking and has a cozy atmosphere. It’s located on the 9th ave and 44 street. It’s a “hidden pearl” and really worth visiting. The service was great. Our waiter was Ian.

.....nice place , good vibe but....

By Avi ganor. |

The resteraunt is very good looking. the tables are cover with white covers and the waiters are very well dressed. the place is supposed to be French /miditirienin but its more Morocan .inspite that , the food is fine and mostly tasty but not great! we had to ask several times for more bread and coffee - but the waiters responded and were very polite we ate brunch. Morocon shaksuka that was too sweet and none spicy at all - and several omllets. the deserts (cokies and choclate cake were very tasty take reservation by phone

We have passed by here a few times on our trips to NYC. Today we went in and we're delighted. Hats off to our server, Johnny.

Fun bistro, even for vegetarians

By mike0042 |

A before theater dinner with a group of six. Friendly service and good food. The onion soup was as expected -- wonderful. The mushroom risotto surprisingly good. The small bouillabaisse was sufficient for a main dish. Several vegetarian dishes are well prepared. Upon entering, we mentioned our theater time and the dinner flowed to get us out on time.

Disappointed

By Laura B |

Very strange experience. My husband and I saw this place on the walk back to our hotel. We looked it up here: good rating. We went back for dinner. Great menu with items you can’t get everywhere. Ordered a bottle of wine and appetizers. All great so far. Then when we were going to order the entrees, we were told we had to leave! They were closing. It was about 8pm. After we asked several times they gave an excuse that there was a gas leak in the kitchen. I’m pretty sure it just wasn’t busy enough to stay open. They offered no discount and not even too much of an apology.

Not for celiacs

By Turning_in_circles |

I am a celiac, and for me, if you are listing gluten free items on a menu, have an apparently knowledgeable waitstaff and menu prices commensurate with personal detail to each entree, normally these elements signal to me that a restaurant will be OK for celiacs. Unfortunately, I was made ill from eating here last weekend. I don't know if it was the appetizer or entree (skipped the dessert). Yes I stated that I was a celiac and very sensitive. Midtown has lots of good restaurants. Suggest celiacs try somewhere else.

French cuisine at the top in NYC

Excellent mussels. Oysters too. Pure treat. Delicious roast chicken and breaded slice XXL. Delicious. Sickening dessert. Not up to those of Europe 🤷‍♂️😉. Welcome and service at the top

A Beautiful Restaurant

By Thomas V |

We were here just for before-dinner drinks and we sat at the bar. But we also drunk in the lovely atmosphere, as pretty as an old fashioned restaurant in Paris. We've dined here before and will surely be back.

OK but they need to up their game to claim to be really French and/or really good

By VooDooTravelPro |

Not impressed with food - I thought it would be really French. The main meals were pretty good. But dessert and cheese plate were a joke and when we complained they just played dumb like it was normal. Stick to main dishes and avoid dessert and cheese plates and you should be OK

Very nice restaurant at a reasonable value

By Croxford64 |

Very good choice especially for seafood. We ate outside and the service was really good. I complained lightly about my warm goat cheese starter not being warm and they took it off the bill with very little fuss. I was very impressed so we treated ourselves to a desert even though we were full. Close enough to be he theater district so a 5 45 reservation gave us plenty of time for a 8 pm show

French restaurant

By PremPod |

Great restaurant with lovely ambiance in Hells Kitchen - definitely worth a visit. We only wanted a light snack so had a plate of snails and a lovely bottle of Chablis.

Delightful French Bistro. Perfect Spot Before Theater!!!

By KcVic |

Dinner was delicious! I thoroughly enjoyed the roasted chicken on a bed of spinach and pistachios. My husband’s steak was perfectly cooked and the frites were yummy. Our waiter even got gluten free focaccia for me at Marseille’s sister restaurant next door. The restaurant is so convenient to the theaters!

Cous Cous wonderful

By Barbara K |

I have gone for lunch on several occasions and all have been fantastic. I find it hard not to order the seafood burger, absolutely delicious. The pommes frites are crisp and just right, and my husband loves the French Onion soup. Rolls with dinner very fresh, which I find less and less often. The cous cous on my last visit was perfectly done, really delicious

The best restaurant in the theater District from somebody who’s been eating in the theater district for 25 years

By stephrab |

We have been eating at Marseille since the day it open. We end up eating here 4 to 8 times a year. Whenever we go somewhere else in the theater district and compare it to Marseille, we walk away disappointed from any other restaurant. I will give you an example of why this is such an amazing restaurant. Tonight the chef had on the menu fresh caught yellow Tail tuna. What made it so amazing is that the chef had caught it himself two days earlier and was willing to share it in the restaurant. It ranked up in freshness with the tuna that we had in the Japanese Tokyo fish market. No matter what we have ordered on the menu it is always superb. The hardest thing is to save room for dessert. Amazing wine by both the glass and the bottle. Every appetizer, every entrée, and every dessert is always spot on. Don’t be disappointed in the THEATRE district. Come here.

Inadequate service

By Brett O |

Stopped in on a Friday at 10 am for breakfast. Hostess was pleasant and helpful but the meal went downhill from there. Took twenty minutes to get server to take our order and then had to ask several times for the items that we ordered to arrive. i got the American breakfast which had a variety of items. When I received my food I noted that there was no toast. My server said they had no toast. I repeated it back to him because I couldn't fathom how a restaurant would not have toast. I felt like I was in the movie Five Easy Pieces where the character was told he couldn't have toast. Our friend ordered the iced coffee and finally had to settle for a cup of coffee. My husband had to ask twice to get his sausage. Server seemed to have perfected the ability to not make eye contact with his patrons.Would not return here with all of the fine restaurants in New York.

Madeline and Liza were great!

Nice French brasserie Traditional French dishes with few newyork specials Long wine list + competent sommelier Nice terrasse on the 9th avenue Dinning room very noisy

Very disappointed

By Meridith A |

Ordered trench onion soup and it was not good at all. Coffee was disappointing as well. Cute atmosphere with good service

Fab breakfast

By Claire B |

Visited twice ehilst on holiday in nyc..was able to get omlettes etc for our gluten free diner...and porridge made with water meant our dairy free diner was happy too...staff take an interest in you and are very attentive...good to get a fresh start to the day! Coffee and water on tap

Moroccan, not French

By Oliver S |

My biggest complaint is about bread: no place can call itself “French Brasserie” when they don't have baguettes, or any other edible French bread. Period. I may be only half French, but that much I know. There were some interesting choices on the food side (like crab & Egg Bruschetta), but everything was way overpriced, for a simple small (don't let the mirrors fool you!) eatery near Hell's kitchen. Service was slow and inefficient. **

Turned a birthday dinner into a great evening!

By Janet A |

Went with reservations for a my birthday with a friend for dinner. We both love this restaurant and always enjoyed a good steak dinner here on previous visits. This evening we decided to leave before being served as it was taking a long time to even get water. It was busy and dinnertime but..well..My friend sought ought the very capable maitre d' Justin and told him it seemed to not be a good night for us but thank you anyway. WELL..Justin took control of this situation apologized and coaxed us to a booth where Autumn the waitress and the staff made my birthday special with all their attention and professionalism. We will continue to recommend Marseille ALWAYS! Thank you!!!

Fantastic place to enjoy a meal

By paulcE3081NI |

My wife and I visited on a short trip to NY, we went for lunch and just loved it. We took the recommendation for our waiter and the food was perfect. Wine selection was great and the service was spot on. There are so many options in NY, but put Mareille on your short list.

Very Good Restaurant HOWEVER.....

By Jim S |

My wife and I ducked into the Marseille restaurant in our recent stay in NYC. The place is a very high end type of restaurant, great staff, great ambiance, great food HOWEVER. We ordered just coffees and some dessert and you would think that we said something bad about someone's mother!! The look we got from one of the waiting staff was a look of disappointment and disdain simply for the fact that we only ordered coffee and cake. Not what you would expect from such a restaurant. Sorry but will not be going back any time soon.

Great French Restaurant

By Diana A |

My husband and I were visiting NYC and standing on a street corner trying to decide which restaurant to go to when a nice man asked if we needed help. I told him were just trying to decide where to eat and he told us which places he liked and suggested Marseille. He then mentioned that he worked there. We went into Marseille and loved the ambiance. My husband ordered the Bistro Steak I believe it was called and I ordered the Cavatelli with lobster. Oh my - both dishes were excellent! We also split a pofitterole which was very good. Service was very good and we will definitely return the next time we are in the city. Thank you Ian for your recommendation!!

Great Spot Pre Theatre

By Bonnie G |

We chose this place because they serve dinner early and we had a tight schedule on a weeknight. The place filled up very quickly after 5 PM. Excellent service. I ordered the half chicken which was on top of a ratatouille type vegetable and it was very good. Side of spinach was outstanding- not baby spinach but broad leaf spinach which seems hard to find anymore. My friend had moules and frites and it was excellent also. We had desserts and they were also excellent. My only recommendation is that my chicken could have been cooked just a bit longer but it was NOT raw. Just could have been a little more well done and crisper as well. We would definitely return here.

To avoid on a party evening

By Magali G |

We were looking forward to being able to eat something other than hamburgers on New Year's Eve. Unfortunately this evening did not live up to our expectations. The chef, if he is French, should review his basics. My husband ordered halibut, he had to eat pork chop Milanese. For the Orange duck, the Orange had disappeared.. The food is equivalent to that of a canteen. We waited over 20 minutes for the bottle of wine ordered. On the other hand, the bill arrived very quickly without being able to order coffees. The single rate for a party night is a good proposition, but it is not possible to charge $65 for party service fees and also ask for tips. Only the brasserie-style setting is nice. Place to avoid on a party night.

Soooo Good!!!!

By Bobby G |

We are big fans of Marseille. We have dinner there at lease once a week. Prince and his staff are all superb in recent dinning protocols and I find that their outdoor dinning is done smartly with their 6 ft. restrictions. Having dinner there has always been a relaxing experience and has become one of the best restaurants in our midtown neighborhood before and during covid 19. Here's to your hard work. It's always appreciated and we will be back very soon. ...Bobby G.

Cold on the Patio for Xmas Pre-fixe

By Rkwok68 |

Made a reservation for Marseille on Christmas Day for 2 - didn’t specify seating and was seated outdoors at a table with an overhead heat lamp. It was about 18 degrees out, so it was chilly despite wearing a coat, thick socks, and winter boots. We had a couple of the Xmas Pre-fixe meals - I had the lobster bisque (pretty good, decent-sized chunks of lobster meat), the turkey ballottine (turkey was juicy, the vegetables well cooked, and the sauce was tasty), and ended with the apple streusel (not so great). We had a couple of cocktails - I had the hot chocolate (with alcohol) - very smooth and great to have a hot beverage being so cold outside. Service (- 1 star) - was okay - there was one server and one assistant servicing the entire outside seating area (there were about 15 people sitting outside)….they probably needed more staffing. Turnover was slow - service was friendly but they were slow to move from course to course. You would think they would keep an eye on outdoor diners, with it being so cold, to get courses out faster. Overall - food was good, service was meh, would I come again and give them another try? Sure…but indoors!

Very good food in small portions.

By Fletch1946 |

We had dinner with friends last night at Marseille. It was our first visit in about two years due to the pandemic. Th place was lively. We shared two appetizers of Shrimp Beignets. Delicious. Two had the short rib daube (read stew) with polenta. The portions were relatively small, as they are in most authentic French restaurants. We both agreed it was amazing. My wife had the tagliatelle with mushroom sauce and liked it a lot. The fourth had the vegetable couscous. He liked it, but did not find it very filling. The desserts were delicious, but again on the small side. Service was efficient, but not rushed. Wines by the glass were a good selection.

Delicious Brunch

was walking around the city looking for a good place to eat brunch and someone off the street recommended it. Very glad we went. The place was so nicely decorated and the food and service was terrific!

Fabulous place

We had breakfast here and were so impressed that we re-visited twice more. A comprehensive menu and food and portions were amazing. Particularly mention to our waiter Steven Smith who was really friendly & entertaining.

Atmosphere: classic french bistro decor. Service: excellent. Food: excellent.

By MCK |

Last time we were here was 5 years ago, loved it then and still love it. With all that has been happening in the restaurant world, they still have been able to maintain service, quality and taste. Our server was excellent, very attentive, made our evening very enjoyable. We started off with cocktails. We ordered the Escargot and the Duck Liver Pate. Both were delicious. Entrees were the Duck (substituted fries for veggies and sauce on the side) and the Petite Bouillabaisse, which was fantastic, filled with perfectly cooked seafood and just big enough. Both dishes tasted fantastic. Still my go-to French in Midtown. Atmosphere: classic french bistro decor. Service: excellent. Food: excellent.

30/40 ⭐️

By Oakdogg86 |

Food Variety ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Food Quality ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Food Presentation ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Food Wait Time ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Service ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Ambience ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Value ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Bonus ⭐️ 30/40 ⭐️s Perfectly lovely restaurant that was recommended to us. Didn’t do any wrong, however the lack of bonus stars tells you that it did not do enough to separate it from another lovely restaurant. Going the extra mile makes a difference to visitors from out of town. I’d still recommend it to others though.🙂

Lovely Dinner

By ejplum |

After going to a matinee at the Met, our family group of four went to Marseille for dinner. It had a lot of charm and everyone was friendly. We had reservations and were seated promptly. The waitress helped my daughter make her choices as she maintains a gluten free diet. We started with the Soupe à l'Oignon Gratinée, Fava Bean Hummus, and Shrimp Beignets which were all very good. For the main course, two of us chose the Confit d'Canard and two chose seafood. Everything was absolutely delicious as were the desserts. It was a treat from start to finish. I would recommend it.

Skate!!!

By Zacatti |

We came for dinner to check out the skate on the menu. Was curious to see how it was prepared. We grew up often eating skate as part of our Italian meals. The skate was deboned and served a bed of spinach , mashed potatoes, and capers. It was cooked perfectly and tasted delicious. Meals were served quickly, hot, and tasty. Great selection of desserts and aperitifs. Overall an enjoyable experience.

Very good service and quality food.

By Cristelle D |

Very nice restaurant even if expensive. Food was good and our waiter Henri was the perfect host, really "aux petits soins" for us.Oysters were very tasty with their 2 sauces and lemon. Meat was cooked like requested ( just a little too much pepper fot the cook ) , quantities were big for people being afraid of not having enough. My daughter took a strawberry mule mocktail and it was really tasty compared to many mocktails in NY. We decided to eat on the outside terrace to enjoy new york street life.

great pre-show dinner spot!

By KylieR2007 |

Great spot for a pre-show dinner! I docked a star because we were sat and then no one came to our table for about 15-20 minutes- they were going over the pre-service stuff, so I think that was why, but we got there early to get a drink specifically. Dinner was delicious though, and we were out in time for the show! The steak is perfect, the fries were meh. Overall good experience, good food, friendly staff & convenient location!

Last day in NYC

By Wolfman674 |

Stopped in for lunch at Marseille on our last day on a recommendation. My wife had beet salad and I had the Ricotta cavatelli and we both split the three cheese option. Had some Champagne. Our waiter Johhny was a rock star. He was waiting a bunch of tables and didn't miss a beat attending to us. Highly recommend!

Mediocre and bland

By ELCW |

The ambience was nice and the servers were friendly but the food was very bland. We ordered the specialty bread and dips and the dips were completely flavourless. The mussels were very small and the sauce was mediocre. This restaurant was a disappointment.

Massive courses and good service

By 205ron |

This restaurant was recommended by our hotel concierge. We were not disappointed although the sheer quantity of food was almost overwhelming. I had the duck which was perfectly cooked and as good as any duck I've had. We were seated in a booth which was a little squeeze. The service was friendly and attentive. The restaurant's clientele is quite eclectic. The conversation at the booth behind was loud and definitely too much information about various affairs of their acquaintances, but overall one couldn't complain about the food or the service. We staggered back to our hotel!

Bonne cuisine provençale à Hell's Kitchen

By Zoom_Gotti |

Nice French style restaurant on 8th Avenue. Gets crowded at times. So it's not really intimate. Has a separate bar area, which is good for singles and less formal couples. They offer a brunch special but you have to consume within 90 minutes. But wolfing down French eats is not my style. So we came for dinner. I like the menu but it's much more expensive than lunch. We had trout, poulet, salad, pate, and delicious deserts. Wine list is good. You used to be able to dine here late after the shows. But it seems that they have curtailed their hours some.

Some French on the corner in Hell's Kitchen

By Minamo67 |

This is a lovely restaurant in atmosphere and food. When we did go, their AC was unfortunately out, but I am sure that has been fixed. If not, choose an outside table. Our server was attentive and the food was delicious.

A BAD LUNCH AT MARSEILLE, ONCE AGAIN.

By Richard M |

I have gone there for years. It has increasingly gotten worse in the past few years. They must have a new chef because French food is not spicy. Bouillabaisse stew does not have red chile peppers in it. All of the French food has been spiced up to the point it is unrecognizable. I lived in France. I know the cuisine. I would order an expensive glass of champagne, a good name like Louis Roederer or Taittinger for $28 a glass. I felt it was worth it. Now, they replaced the brand name champagnes with a cheap version which tastes lousy and still charge $28 a glass. I had to ask 3 times for bread. Otherwise, you don't ask, you don't get the bread. Service is shoddy and after all these years and yesterday's once-again lousy meal, I will never return. There are other French restaurants in the area which are more authentic if French cuisine is what you want. This Marseille cuisine borders on Mexican, Indian with a hope for some French. Absolutely disappointing and expensive for the lousy food. The berries for dessert were old ones and had mold on them. What do you want for $10 a dish of berries? Something fresh? Really, not a pleasant experience and so, so disappointing because I was a loyal client. Richard Marcheski

A true city gem!!

By onlinequeen |

With all the billions of restaurants in the city it is so difficult to find one that is outstanding. Marseille is certainly on the “outstanding list”. A friend recommended we try dinner at Marseille, but when stumped for a spot for breakfast in Time Square we thought we’d give it a try. We were not disappointed! Marseille is a 5 star restaurant in every way. White tablecloths, bright, airy, comfortable seating. Johnny M provided us with outstanding service, and gave us wonderful suggestions. Be sure to try the fresh croissants. We also enjoyed our fluffy French omelettes, bacon, and plenty of delicious coffee. All at a surprisingly reasonable price. We will certainly be back for dinner! Hope Johnny will be there to wait on us.

Great find near theatre district!

Delicious find near the theatre district. We ate here for brunch on Sunday before a 3 pm show. Bottomless mimosas and bellinis are a great deal and good pours. We started with the escargot and salmon tartar - both great! For entrees we had the crispy potato rosti and croque madam - also great! And for dessert we shared the chocolate layer mouse cake - also delicious! Overall, we had a great pre-show meal and I would definitely come back!

Classic French Restaurant without French Prices!!!

Great before or after theater spot. Been here several times and the duck is incredible, New York Strip with the frites are delicious. Creme Brûlée is incredible with strawberries, blueberries and a single blackberry. Great wine selection and impeccable service.

Excellent for breakfast!

By Keith H |

Our last day in New York and we visited Marseille for breakfast initially because it was close to our hotel (Intercontinental on 44th). Previous reviews were great and our experience was excellent as well. The coffee was lovely and food delicious. Probably the best breakfast we had on our three week trip across the USA! Would recommend a visit if you’re local.

Horrible Overpriced Holiday Dinner

By Jon |

Alone on Christmas Day, I ordered the turkey dinner from Marseilles. What an overpriced, horrible mistake. The portion delivered was not entree size but rather appetizer size, missing half of the described items from the menu. And it, along with the tiny micro cup of foul tasting lobster bisque soup arrived cold. The dessert, supposedly bouche d'Noel, was miniscule in size, devoid of taste, and stale. Not even remotely worth the inflated, preposterously overpriced $48. I tried to treat myself with a special holiday dinner and received something not fit to serve at a rescue mission. A massive, overpriced, and disgusting disappointment. Save your money and go elsewhere.

Pre-theater dinner

By pamer103 |

We just returned from a weekend in Manhattan and we went to Marseille for a pre dinner before our show. Our waiter asked whether we had tickets for a show and upon learning that we did..he made sure our apps and entrees came out in a timely fashion without making us feel rushed. We had the Calamari appetizer and it was one of the best I’ve had and I order it frequently. We ordered the Duck with rhubarb confit and the lamb. Both were cooked to perfection and tasted wonderful. We did not have time for desert( the desert menu looked fabulous) but our server brought us a small sample of cookies which were great and could have almost convinced me to skip the show and order more. All in all, a great meal, great service and comfortable setting. We will return.

Fantastic Restaurant

We have not eaten here for a few years. The food is still as good as I remembered. Started with a terrific Rosita and my wife loved her Escargot. The Crisp Half Duck was terrific with cherry sauce. We had a great time chatting with our server and aspiring actress Chelsea. We are theater geeks and were in the city to see shows and she was nice enough to take some time to talk to us about the theater scene in the city. She mad a great dinning experience even better. We will be back in NYC in Sept. and plan on eating here and ask to have her serve us.

I was on September 6th he ripped me off Awarded twice on my mastercard He doesn't want to wait for anything. Be careful. They're hustlers.

Great lunch

Despite it being New Years Eve and a lot of preparation going on around us, we had a superb lunch, with good wine. Only negative was the cheeseboard which is a bit sparse!!!

Wonderful meal at the bar

By MajorNYC |

We have enjoyed Marseille many times. This time we walked in without a reservation (45 minute wait), sat at the bar, had one of the best meals ever. French onion soup, gem salad, lobster tails, crepe brûlée. But best of was our waitperson, Sarah, whose smile lit up the room. To watch her and her colleagues work added to our terrific experience.

Great Choice before or after the Theater

By Antionio10 |

Been here a number of times and never had a bad meal. In fact, it is likely the best restaurant in the theater district. The lamb, onion soup, fish, salads, all good. It is in a beautiful deco space. They stay open late. Cocktails are well done.

Bad service.

By Terry W |

Our service was horrible. We waited a long time to get our soup. And then even longer to get our waffle. It was barely warm. It was delivered by a runner. The waitress never came to check on us after the waffle arrived. We were out of tea during the meal. Asked for another tea when she came to see if we wanted desert. She came back to clean the table and my husband asked again for the tea. She reprimanded him and said he had just asked for it. So the tea came right before our bill came. Very disappointed.

Love the vibe

Went for pre-theater dinner on a Wednesday evening. From the moment we arrived we liked it! Reservation was honored in a timely manner; our server was attentive and brought our house Rose quickly. My friend and I shared the excellent and well portioned escargot which was complimented by delicious crispy rolls. For the main course we both had the hangar steak served over spinach. I could have this same exact meal again any day and enjoy it just as much. Instead of dessert we ended with the very good cappuccino. Although the place was packed, we were easily able to have conversation. The ambiance was upbeat and casual. Love the tile floors too. Definitely will be coming back very soon.

Excellent service and delicious food

Excellent service from the moment they receive you, the waitress who served us (Erika) was an extremely pleasant and attentive person at all times, she gave us very accurate recommendations - delicious food and we had a great time. Absolutely everything we tried was exquisite.

Excellent service and food

By Jmahg |

We hadn’t booked a table but we’re welcomed and seated at once. The restaurant was very busy but staff were very attentive. We immediately had water and menus. Wine choice was immense but we chose a reasonably priced bottle which was very good.Food arrived promptly and was excellent. Would recommend the frogs legs as a starter. Our mains of salmon and skate were equally as good. It was lovely to have some hot food which we had not had during our visit to New York this time. Throughout the staff were attentive, friendly and professional.

Nice theater lunch

By cararro |

We came at noon for a 2:00 show and the timing was perfect. Very crowded on matinee Wednesday, but the service was fairly professional and efficient. Onion soup was excellent, house salad only okay, with no dressing. Veggie couscous was excellent, omelet and chicken paillard okay. Creme brûlée very good, chocolate mouse okay. All in all a good experience and a good value on the $34 fixed price lunch.

Nice brunch

While very loud, this was a great place for brunch. The food was good, the menu extensive and the service attentive. We will return.

Excellent Pre-show meal

By lollie003 |

We went to Marseille for a pre-show meal and the food was delicious and the service was excellent. There was different entrees by our party of five as the chicken, duck, and fish entree were all excellent. Additionally the restaurant was very convenient to the theater.

Good but could be better

By Adam F |

We recently dined at this restaurant with friends. We had a mixed experience, some of the food was delicious some not soo much. It’s probably a little overpriced in truth and for this reason we left a reduced tip. The thing that ruined the experience was the staff at the end of the meal. After paying the bill we left a tip this however wasn’t enough for the staff at this restaurant to our amazement. The waiter in fact called over his manager to discuss with us why we hadn’t left a bigger tip. We all couldn’t believe the damn right cheek of the man and left immediately.

Classic bistro, perfectly serviceable and tasty food, but seemed a bit tired

By MichaelTheWanderer |

The food was fine/good; the service was fine/good. Everything was fine/good. And that's just it -- it didn't really wow us, and we were expecting or hoping for a bit more. I think they need to shake things up and put a few more inventive things on the menu. My $42 bouillabaisse was good but not great. We felt like the classic dishes could have been modernized. Perhaps that sounds conflicting, modern and classic, and perhaps conflicted describes well how we felt about the dinner.
