Quaint wine bar

By Meems |

Quaint spot near Ailey center. Enjoyed the cheeseboard, Johnson family red wine recommended by our server. We both ordered the lemon pasta. Everything was wonderful. It’s a small quaint venue. I would definitely go back!

Helped us out

By Adam W |

Didn’t even order drinks, we ordered drinks and my mum got Ill from the Mexican we had for tea and they cancelled the drinks and were incredibly nice about giving water and offering support as my mum was ill. The people who run the bar were top notch honest people. 5/5

Great dinner !

By MarkhamMike |

We dropped by this restaurant a few days in advance, and they were kind enough to hold both lunch and dinner reservations for us, since we didn't yet know our plans. Anyway, we met some friends at Medi for dinner, and initially we sat in the small garden area at the back of the restaurant. The staff were very attentive, and we did have to ask for a few extra minutes to relax with our friends before deciding what to order. Our appetizers arrived soon after ordering, and so did the rain ! Very efficiently all guests were moved into the main dining room and accommodated conveniently......it was the Tuesday after Labour Day, so luckily the place wasn't full. One suggestion to the restaurant.....with the menu laid out as it was, it was difficult to work out which meals were appetizers and which were entrees, maybe a redesign for next time, please ? We continued our evening with entrees and desserts, and EVERY SINGLE ITEM tasted delicious.....so the food is highly recommended. I will also give a special shoutout to our waitress Ana ("Portuguese, but not from Brazil"). Over the course of the evening we were probably, although unintentionally, a pretty demanding table of guests. However, she handled things with a smile and even had time to chat once or twice towards the end of the evening. If you're looking for a comfortable restaurant for a nice glass (or two) of wine and excellent Mediterranean cuisine, give Medi Winebar a try......very enjoyable.

A great meal!

By ianshamshey |

I had not been here in a while and the sandwich board outside the restaurant tempted me to go in. I was seated immediately and ordered a glass of red wine from Montenegro. I then ordered 6 oysters which eventually arrived with cut lemon and a bottle of Tabasco sauce. I then ordered the grilled Spanish octopus which other Yelpers had tried and liked a great deal. The oysters were fresh and delicious and were finished quickly. The octopus soon followed with sliced celery on top and Greek olives on the side. This came with some delicious Italian bread. The entire meal was great. The restaurant is a large space, a bar on one side as you walk in and tables opposite this. An added perk is a cellar as well as an outdoor garden. It is a great place to meet after work or on the weekends for brunch. It did, however, take some time for the food to arrive. I found this odd since it was early and the restaurant was not really crowded. The waitperson was pleasant and attentive. It is pricey especially for wine by the glass. I would recommend and return.

Good food and good service always

By HughDonovan |

My wife and I visit New York two or three times a year and we usually go to the Medi for Saturday lunch as we know we will get good food at a reasonable price with friendly service. The wine is also reasonably priced, with a diverse selection. Highly recommended.

Fabulous meal

By knjabara |

One of the best meals we had in the city. Visited for brunch and all was perfect. Their waffles have a hint of vanilla making them my absolute favorite. Service was excellent and we loved the outdoor patio seating.

Take a pass

By Ellen28 |

It’s in an area with fantastic food, so this is one I would avoid. The server was absolutely excellent, but the food wasn’t good. We did a dip platter (22$) and the babaganush was liquidy and just not good. Also did octopus (29$) and mussels (24$) - two favorite foods and the flavors were not good - texture was chewy on the octopus - we hardly ate it. Meatballs (24$) were ok. Ambiance is cute. It’s a shame.

Not the best private party venue

By GVarch |

Came here for a private party in the downstairs room. They claim this room can accommodate 60, we were shy of 40 and it was uncomfortably tight. To add to the space problem this room doubles as a storage area for the upstairs restaurant, so the staff was regularly pushing by to get provisions for the restaurant. The food was very good on a positive note. That's about it though. The drinks were weak, and slow coming. Lastly, we had the room from 5-8, at 7:55 they began sitting regular dinner guests in the party room and couldn't shove us out the door fast enough.

Not What We Hoped…

By WarmWeatherPlease013 |

Arrived 10 minutes ahead of time and our group of 5 was seated in the rear patio area on a lovely spring evening. Patrons at the indoor bar appeared to be enjoying themselves as we walked past, so this was promising. We ordered a bottle of sparkling wine which took about 20 minutes to arrive, and sadly it was warm. Service was spotty, at best, with the servers repeatedly bringing other people’s food to our table. Hummus was served with much too few pita slices. Pork belly special was not crispy and particularly fatty. 5th person at our table was served main course 20 minutes after we were served, and while the server graciously offered to remove the entree from our bill it was double-charged. There were other problems with the bill where we were overcharged and had to resolve that with the server who wasn’t particularly apologetic. It just wasn’t a good experience, especially with so many other options available in NYC.

A Nice Find

By Whiskersr |

Located on 9th ave. between 53rd and 54th, it's well located to the theater district. We thoroughly enjoyed a meal made up of small plates - Hummus & Pita, Greek salad, cheese plate, bread, and a delicious goat cheese and prosciutto dish. The service was great, and they even had some inexpensive bottles of wine. We tried a white wine from Portugal and it was very refreshing. They had various seating options, and we chose the front room, which was comfortable. We were quite pleased with our dining experience here.

Breakfast & Dinner at Medi

By ela_rafaela |

Location: really nice with a outdoor space on the backyard Service: was good and friendly Food: Excellent (Eggs Benedict the Hummus as well as the truffel gnocchi's)

Great service

By malibuirishmike |

We didn’t really eat here, but I have to give a shout out to Medi for accommodating us for drinks on the craziness of the Ninth Avenue Food Festival. We were exhausted, but they seated us at an outdoor table where we could watch the world go by even though they knew we were just there for drinks. Super helpful waitress (Maria?). Had a bottle of the cava which was on happy hour special and was quite refreshing plus one order of the house salad which provided all three of us with a healthy snack. Thank you Medi!

Great place for a yummy dinner in a beautiful space

By Ashley B |

Great food, wonderful wait staff, beautiful space and a cozy patio with great ambience. Would recommend highly! Especially the duck confit. Delicious.

Happy Hour spot

By Kiara P |

It's a nice place for oysters and drinks in happy hour time (till 7 pm). The deal is $1 oysters. Drinks are also discounted. I had a Dirty Martini ($7). For the happy hour menu you have to sit at the bar. The manager is Italian and very friendly. I was happy with my meal, and will be back when I'm in the area.

Wonderful sangria, cheese board and atmosphere.

By KL185 |

Stopped in for a happy hour treat of excellent sangria and a delicious cheese board. We sat at the bar, and the garden restaurant looked very inviting if we were having dinner.

Bad brunch

By Patricia S |

This had to be the worst French toast I’ve ever had. It tasted like it had been premade and sat around before being slightly warmed up. And the amount of berries was very stingy. - My companion had steak and eggs and was very disappointed by the steak (the arugula served with it, on the other hand, looked like the best thing on our table). Maybe dinner is better, but I do not recommend this restaurant for brunch. (By the time the waitstaff asked how the food was, we had been sitting around waiting for the check. Coffee also took a long time coming—perhaps they were short staffed.)

Nice Atmosphere

By Matthew M |

I've been here a few times now. It's a great spot in Hell's Kitchen with a nice wine and cocktail selection, oyster happy hour, and tasty Greek food. During warm weather, they have a cute outdoor section. The inside is beautiful too. I've always had nice service, and it's reasonably priced. They take reservations for larger groups. Would recommend!

Bad service and no apology after 2 hour wait for food

By Yu Z |

I rarely leave reviews for my neighborhood restaurants but this one really shocked me! Last time I went in 2015 and it was a good experience but today it was so horrible! We waited one hour after placing the order and nothing came (about 220PM that time) and we went to ask how much longer we should wait, we were told "sorry but the kitchen is busy we are understaffed. nothing we can do but wait. yelling at me won't help". But clearly other tables who arrived later got their food served first. Then after 90mins of waiting, the appetizers came (3 tiny appetizers for 6 starving people). The portions were so small and it was beyond our imagination how such a tiny greek salad could have taken 90 minutes. And when we tried to get an estimate of how much more time for the main courses, and mentioned 90 minutes wait, the server showed us the order detail and corrected us it has only been 85 minutes. How absurd! Then finally at almost 3PM, 2 hours after we got in, we got our main courses which were all less than stellar. The dishes did not come the way we asked. For example, we wanted an omelet with egg white and no cheese and we got exactly regular omelet with cheese. But we settled with that because no one could afford another 2 hour wait. I am willing to assume that the food would have been better if it had not been such a busy time (yes 3PM) for them. This is in addition to a 60 minutes wait to get our drinks and numerous times of getting our drink orders incorrectly. In the end, the manger only apologized and only gave us 20% off the bill after we had to ask for it. Zero sincerity to make things right. This service is just unacceptable. This shows the restaurant is extremely poorly managed and has zero capability to handle exceptions to say the least. Our afternoon was ruined completely by this experience. My recommendation is for this restaurant to learn from China, where the restaurants do not charge for food that comes later than 20 minutes after the order.

1st time was fantastic

By Mike E |

Went to Medi with a group of 6 (2 other couples in town from Texas) after having dinner at Giordano 54 and learning the two restaurants are connected (legally and physically as their outdoor areas are contiguous). We were seated immediately at a great area in the basement, near their live music. The wait staff was attentive, and turned out included Phillipe who had been our server at Giordano 54. We had a couple of bottle of Muriel wine that were fabulous, and the different dishes (my wife had the Branzino) and I had the hanger steak. Both were excellent. Our friends all relished their meals as well.

Amazing small plates!

By leefmorgan |

Just check out the menu! Exquisitely done small plates to share in an intimate space within walking distance to play district. They had a well curated wine list to pair with plates such as burrata and prosciutto, marinated olives. Meatballs with raisins and pine nuts, grilled octopus, and (wait for it!)......gnocchis with truffles! No emoji can describe! They do have larger plates in menu but this was perfect for a group of girls needing a nosh before a show. Staff was professional and sincerely accommodating.

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE

By RICH R |

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE!!!!!! First, our party reserved seating in their outdoor space for 14 people. Upon arrival, we were told that there was no way to sit outside as it was against their policy, even though we went days earlier to make the reservation and confirm the outdoor space. Due to this, we had to wait 1.25 hours for a different table inside. Service was terrible! First off, we were served warm Bloodymarys that tasted like tomato soup. We had to re-ask the waitress for items she kept forgetting, i.e. ketchup, cheese, fork, and spoon etc. When we ask the waitress for cheese for a pasta dish, we observed her dig her bare hand into the main cheese bowl in the kitchen, and put it from her hand into a smaller bowl for our table. Absolutely disgusting! The waitress was rude and told vegetarians that they could not order dishes without meat, or exchange meat for veggies. A patron was served a lox bagel that was toasted, but left sitting for many minutes before being served. The bagel was cold and rock hard. When returned, the MANAGER said he would take care of it. All he did was re-heat the existing sandwich which caused the bagel to come burnt, tough and inedible. On top of that we had to pay 20% tip to a very undeserving waitress!! Never going again and don't recommend this place to anyone. Save your money!!!

Great food

Had a great mix of food here. Most dishes excellent, especially the short ribs. Service was fairly good, and a reasonable wine list

Ruined our last night in N.Y

By Lauren D |

Don't normally complain on these sites but I am so upset with this experience, I had to. Just ate here. Should have run a like when we saw how empty it was, but we took a stupid gamble. Ordered the shared bruschetti which was quite nice (explaining the 1 star review). Then the "lobster tagliatelli special". This arrived and was one of the most disappointing dishes I've ever eaten. Wasn't tagliatelli, was actually disgusting spaghetti that tasted like wallpaper paste that all stuck together. The sauce tasted like something out of a can. The lobster was so salty. When we complained the waitress did not apologise immediately. She then returned with a drink that er bubbles in it but we didn't recognise or want (we were told it was champagne. No. Prosecco. No. Cava... Basically the waitress was winging it). When the bill arrived the full $38 dollars for the meal was on there. When we complained about that we were told that because we ate the lobster we were to be charged the full amount. There was hardly anything to the lobster and what I did eat was gross. A token gesture of SOME money off plus a quicker apology and no unidentified bubbly drink would have been better. Totally ruined our last night in N.Y.

Nice outdoor garden!

By Santchef |

Delicious food with outdoor garden. Started with the cheese platter and had the prix fixe menu, the Pappadelle with lemon sauce was delicious. Price was also very reasonable.

Service just ok

By momr2d2 |

We stopped in for dinner before a show. We called to get a reservation but they said we would be fine as a walk-in. As soon as we arrived, we were seated. Tons of construction out front so we didn't want to eat outside. There were no vegan, gluten free options, and when asked, I was told to have the salad with no cheese. We started with olives, which we all loved. My fam had oysters which they said were ok. I ordered the lemon pasta, which was delicious but sadly not gluten free. My family all enjoyed their meals too. The service was slow and we had to ask to get water refilled and to get the bill. Nobody asked if we wanted dessert so we chose not to have anything more there. It was on the expensive side too. There was a bar, which had many people and a patio in the back that we did not go to.

Great bar

By BarlowO |

Great wine bar, friendly staff, great place for cocktails or a nice glass of wine, garden at the rear.

Happy hour

By Gert K |

Visited this place during their happy hour. My friend was craving for some oysters so we sat in front of the restaurant in outdoor seating. He got himself the oysters and I decided to try their chicken liver appetizer. Have to say it was really good. Shared a pitcher of sangria with my friend and enjoyed the weather. Service was good. Everything arrived very quickly. Atmosphere inside is very cool. Loved the design.

A new favorite!

By glms27 |

Met some old friends here for dinner. The atmosphere is very warm -- dimly lit, could be romantic if you were with a date. Service was excellent. All staff members I encountered were friendly and helpful. I started with the Selection of 3 Mediterranean cheeses. I chose the brie, the manchego, and the cana de cabra. All were tasty, and served with nice accompaniments, as well as thin, crusty bread. For my entree, I chose the Home Made Fresh Ricotta Gnocchi in a black summer truffle and butter sauce. This was outstanding. So light, they melted in my mouth. They could've used more truffle -- but I can never get enough truffle, so that's probably just my personal taste. I'd never had gnocchi like this before. I look forward to going back and having it again. There are so many other things on the menu I'd like to try. I will surely return in the future.

Love this gem in Hell's Kitchen!

By Lindsey M |

This is a wonderful venue with indoor, outdoor, and cellar seating. The food was great and I really enjoyed my cocktail! The staff was wonderful and I met the director of operations, Chris, who was so kind and made the visit special. I cannot wait to come back for the dinner and shows in the cellar!

Interesting wine bar

By Kelpiemar |

Tried this great little place, reservations helped! Sat in the outside garden, very cool in the middle all the tall buildings to be in what felt like a European garden. Food wonderful, Ricotta bruschetta and tomatoes delicious. Sea bass very tender, the broccoli rabe a little bitter, but off set the buttery mouthfeel of the seabass.

Fantastic gem in Hell's Kitchen

By Lara B |

We dined at Medi and had a simply wonderful experience. The chef's choice cheese and charcuterie plate was plenty for three of us to share, and the hummus was amazing. The service was great and the server was friendly and helpful. We've already recommended this location to others!

Pre-Theater Dinner

By 17larryy |

We stumbled on Medi while looking for a place to eat before going to the theater at Lincoln Center. Our server noted our time constraint and promptly served our cheese platter starter followed by our main courses. I had the fish special which breaded and pan fried. According to my mate, the bartender made a good negroni, and our server's wine recommendations were spot on. We will be back the next time we're in New York.

Cosy small excellent fusion/ Italian food

By DafnaG |

Small cosy restaurant that has a small menu , just like we like it cause it usually promises good food . We had an excellent octopus on the grill and a burata for starters followed by a very big and tasty steak and orecchiette and a wonderful chocolate cake as a grand finale !

Check out the back garden spot!

By Terri |

Went for a quick glass of wine and apps before the theatre. Staff was very friendly and attentive. Had a nice Spanish bottle of wine at happy hour price! Only one red or white choice but definitely tasty. Great app selection with quick service. The entrees around us looked wonderful. Would recommend!

Worth a visit

We stumbled upon Medi while looking for dinner one evening while visiting New York. The service was fabulous and the food very good. The atmosphere was charming and inviting. Would visit again.

Nice atmosphere but just OK food

By ggcaiazzo |

In the middle of the week, some friends of mine and I decided we wanted to go out for a nice dinner. I'd heard about this place and thought we would try it. For a wine bar, you would expect them to have a good selection of wines by the glass. Although there were a lot of bottles to buy, they only had five red wines to choose from by the glass. The food was just OK…. I had what were supposed to be lamb chops but ended up being slices of a rack of lamb. I asked for medium rare… They came medium well. My friend had the muscles and scallops which he said were OK... again nothing exceptional. By the way, the happy hour offerings are only available at the bar. It's not a place I will return to.

Amazing Tapas

By JaneyJune19 |

Four of us recently enjoyed delicious tapas here. We started with the grilled octopus, hummus & pita, sauteed brussels sprouts, and the burrata with grilled asparagus. We shared and all had a nice taste of each dish. For entrees, we ordered the rib eye kebob, pappardelle al limone, ricotta gnocchi, & thoroughly enjoyed all dishes again! I would definitely recommend this trendy winebar - there is also an outdoor courtyard for dining when the weather warms up (and a cellar with dining tables as well.) A decent wine list as well as cocktails are also available.

Excellent Mediterranean food in NYC

By LasLuces |

they have a hidden patio/courtyard in the back and this makes it special for a peaceful dinner far from the noises of the 9th Avenue. Nice Greek/Turkish food style. lamb koftes were excellent. they have a cellar and options are excellent. Prices are reasonable for NYC and service was nice and friendly. I do recommend that place.

Amazing meal!

By preciousness22 |

I ate here with three friends this past weekend. It's greek mediteranean cuisine. The food was outstanding. I had the branzino as an entre, hummus for an appetizer and the panna cotta for dessert. Everyone's food and meals were all outstanding. We chose the $45 prix fix special. I recommend this eatery.

Awesome food but pricy!

By Giacomo C |

Was here for a dinner with friends, it was the first time and we chose this place based on a friend's suggestion. We first had drinks at the bar, which was nice, they also had happy hour and so we had a couple of glasses of very good wine. We then moved to the garden for the dinner: the garden outside is small but really lovely, unfortunately you can not choose to have dinner there, it depends on the availability, so I guess we were lucky! The service was very good, and the food was amazing, everything was really high quality and we had a wonderful time. I chose the special of the day, which was a very good home made pasta with crab and tomato sauce...it was delicious but it was way too pricy than I expected...it was almost 40 dollars...but you know what? You live only once, so it was worth, as it was really excellent! Surely recommend it!

Good atmosphere and pleasant food

By Richard H |

Dined solo here recently and had a lovely table downstairs. Service was good and food really tasty. The gnocchi in a butter sauce was very rich but delicious. Would recommend for intimate occasions as it was quite dark downstairs. Good choice of wine by the glass also.

Not great

By SenecaLake59 |

Went with my wife and daughter and sat in the back garden area. Our waitress was not very attentive checking on us every twenty minutes or so. My fish was descent but my wife's and daughters pasta was completely tasteless . I would not recommend this place.

New York must do better

By Scott M |

The Host was obnoxious as we arrived 30 minutes before the table and asked if a table was available earlier. We had no luck finding a bottle of a semi dry sparkler to enjoy at the bar before the table was ready. This is a "wine bar". The by the glass and bottle selections were a joke. Clearly in experience or noninterest consumes the wine menu. Dinner was horrible with the main entree's not being presented at the same time. Pasta dishes were served together for 4 people and 30 minutes later the chicken was served for 3 people. No excuse given, no explanation given. The bill had a $10.00 additional charge listed; no reason explained. If wine and service are priorities, select another restaurant.

Celebration of life

By Mademoiselle Jinae |

This is my 3rd visit to Medi in 10 years. The food was delicious, ambiance very warm and romantic, and service was 5 star. Henry, our server was charming, attentive and paid attention to detail. The whole staff made me feel very special for my birthday saying happy birthday as they walked by with a smile and suprised me with a cake and bday song. Thank you Medi for your consistency in service and food quality. See you soon

Its very good food and in the neighborhood.

By Sceinceman |

Food is excellent and the cost is reasonable by Manhattan standard! Always crowded and lively. Close to where I live, which makes it convenient

Good service and charming outdoor garden!

By C C |

Reasonable prices. Small plates and meals. Good wine list. Garden in the back has outdoor dining. Excellent service.

Medi could NOT be more charming than it is, nor the food more delicious!

By Pfohlcochise |

My friends, David and Katy took me to this lovely, charming restaurant for the first time tonight, Wednesday, September 11th, and what a treat I had in store! Everyone was so kind--from the lady who seated us to our waiter, to the servers who brought out our food and cleared the table. The food was SCRUMPTIOUS. We ate in the garden which was perfect as the weather was so mild outside. I had orecchiette which was SO delicious! For dessert, I had tiramisu, which was magnificent. I thoroughly enjoyed my evening there, and though I've lived in NYC on the upper west side for 47 years and tonight was my first visit tonight, it won't be my last! What a treasure. Lucky Hell's Kitchen residents!

Great Brunch!

By MatthewOrlov |

A business associate wanted to meet at this quaint restaurant whilst I was in NYC. Upon entering, I noticed it was small and the smell of the kitchen cooking up something good. I ordered the Two Baked Eggs, sweet & hot italian sausage , spinach, mushroom cream sauce and gruyere cheese, so delicious! Since we were celebrating a great business meeting, we finished brunch with vodka (it's a Russian thing) and took our leave. I will be going back when I am in NYC again, which is soon.

Delicious food and good service

By Cbrownie |

It was hot and humid, but my friends and I sat outside in the garden where it was quieter. It would probably be even better with cooler weather. We shared an artichoke appetizer and bufala mozzarella caprese. Both were very good. Our waiter suggested the specials: butterflied red snapper w potatoes and a seafood pasta. Generous portions, so none of us finished our meals, but we were all satisfied and had no room for the desserts. We didn’t feel rushed, so we just stayed and talked. During the meal, the waiter checked in a few times. I would go again(and eat indoors or go on a cooler eve)

MEDI Wine Bar management, staff, and chef of the wine tasting event deserve a standing ovation! Cozy decor, excellent food, exquisite Italian wine, and flawlessly professional service! Extremely attentive and polite staff! What a wonderful setting! Thank you. Can't wait to be back!

Wonderful Mediterranean Food!

By Nsenya |

Great little winebar/restaurant located not too far from the theatre district. For Saturday/Sunday brunch tried the Spanish fritata (outstanding...very similar to what one might get in Spain). Also had the waffles/French toast...and, instead of bacon, we had prosciutto...YUM! Enjoyed the wines (of course)...any other drinks you might want are available, too. They were extremely accommodating on our last visit...arrived with two children and three adults (one was handicapped, using a walker). Although we had reservations through opentable, they had not received the request yet...but immediately got us seated and orders taken although the restaurant was filled. Great, European-style establishment!

Great location, amazing experience!

By Stef |

Stumbled upon Medi Winebar one evening in NYC and returned within the same week! Very quaint and romantic setting. The food is amazing and so are the drinks! The grilled Brussel sprouts with pistachios were the best I have ever tasted. Our server was fantastic, a friendly young gentleman form Albania.

Great Food - Horrible Staff

By Holland K |

I went here for a quick lunch with my boyfriend on a weekday. The waitress knew absolutely nothing about the menu, brought out my boyfriend's food long before mine was ready and we had to wait about 20 minutes to get our bottle of wine because she didn't know what they had. I am only giving 3 stars because the food is good - we just order takeout now.

Tasty food and great service

By SeeTheW0rld62 |

Thos was my second visit to Medi Wine Bar and it was as good as the first. We started with the Spanish Tapas Trio. The risotto croquettes were delicious and the date pincho was creative and tasty. I liked the sweet date contrasted with tangy goat cheese. I then had the Medi Salad. It was very good. The grapefruit was refreshing and avocado and shrimp are always great together. The shaved fennel added some crunch and additional flavor.

Very good food and wine list

By gtkim2 |

Came here before a show and enjoyed it very much. Food and wine were quite good. We took advantage of the $25 wine during happy hour and were very pleased with the selection. Would love to go back and sit outside during warmer weather.

Okay place - wont be coming again

By ajmera_008 |

We made a reservation and went to this place for my birthday. We made a reservation in advance and were confirmed for the cellar (downstairs). On the day of reservation I called again to confirm and I was told that we had some issue with opentable and our reservation was lost - they will still accommodate us but not in cellar. When we went to the restaurant we figured there was a private reservation for party they took after my booking and they lied to us on face that opentable got messed up. I do understand the business reason for doing that but then at least have guts to say it - instead of lying and making faces. All the reason we came here is because I wanted to see their cellar, otherwise food is anyways just okay and really expensive - its definitely not worth it. If you check their menu prices will look more than reasonable but the portions are 30% or regular portions so factor that in. Overall - not a place I will be visiting again. 3 stars as the food is at least edible.

Beautiful restaurant!

By SurviveEMS |

The staff is so nice here, they have so many selections of wine (I cannot wait to bring my wine loving friend to NYC when she turns 21 and we will stop here), and their desserts are amazing! The gelato is really good and rice pudding with almonds and raisins... to die for! I would come here all the time if I lived up there. They also have a garden in the back I think certain times of the year but it was way too cold when I was there to see!

Excellent

Nice open patio in back. Attentive service by knowledgeable staff. Fast service. The gnocchi is a must-have.

fine

By Loren G |

First time here and had a very good meal with attentive and timely service. Nice wine list. Broad variety of apps and tapas plates. Unique choices and combinations. The ravioli with egg and jamon serrano was excellent as was the gnocci with the truffles. For the beef eater, the steak kabab with mushrooms is a great final course.

A Great Discovery in a Sea of Choices

By tprindy |

In a city of 26,000+ restaurants, I was pleased that we found this quaint and tasty place. We were enticed by a signboard outside the front door. We enjoyed some happy hour selections and then ordered meals. Matt, the bartender, has to be one of the most hospitable, engaging, and attentive people we've encountered in restaurants anywhere. We liked the place well enough to go back another evening before leaving the area. We'll definitely check in here again.

Came on a recommendation...

By Justinbabbitt |

Arrived around 6:30 on a Tuesday evening. Sat right away, and was attended to very quickly by a very friendly server. Went over the menu, specials, etc. Ordered a great Piemonte wine... So dinner was fantastic. Started with the artichoke salad (wow). Then for the main course I had the special that was described as flaming cheese extinguished with pasta with your choice of black truffles, garlic, or chili flakes. This was a knockout! The presentation was amazing! They started the fire in a giant wheel of cheese out in the dining room for all to see, tossed in the pasta and then brought it over to the table garnished with the black truffles. The most fantastic pasta dish I've ever encountered. The server was very good at making recommendations, and they were all spot on.

Cracking find

Dropped in here for a glass of wine, stayed for several bottles and food. Really chilled out, nice vibe, great to sit out the front and watch the world go by - lovely staff, terrific wine selection, food was really good. No complaints.

Cute place, have eaten here before. The staff are very friendly, I just think their prices are a bit much for the style of restaurant. It's quite casual, but you wouldn't know that by the price of an entree. They do have a happy hour, at the bar, I'd go for that again.

Tasty lunch

Recommended by a tour guide, we dropped by for an early lunch. Service was efficient and friendly, the food fresh and tasty. A good espresso.

trendy little restaurant bar on 9th Ave and 53-54th st.

By pinceme_iam_dreaming |

Went on a Saturday night around 8 and was seated right away even though they were busy.. Started win a glass of French red wine each while we looked over the menu. I ordered grilled lamb with stewed okra and a side of Brussels sprouts and the wife had some kind of steak with mixed veggie's and rice.. The wait staff brought us water and a basked of bread with flavored olive oil. while waiting my wife had a house special cocktail and I had a 7&7 with sprite.. no 7up.. drinks were big and very strong. Dinner came hot and looked perfect. Lamb was cooked a perfect medium and the okra was to die for IMHO. the sprouts were great as well. Same with my wife meal, cooked perfect and yummy sides. It was my birthday and my wife told one of the 5 different staff members that took care of us, it was and the manager came to our table after dinner and gave us a free special gelato that was also out of this world. After 1 more drink it was about 10 by now, the place was still busy and all the customers looked happy including us. With all the booze we drank and the wonderful food we enjoyed the total bill was only $180 including a tip of about $40 or so... service was excellent because of how nice everyone was to us while doing their job in such a fast paced and small restaurant. Will go again.

Great spot

I wish I could give a 0 star to this place. Yesterday (09/28/2019), I went with my husband for brunch to Medi. We ordered a couple of dishes, one of which was the "grilled octopus." After finishing up our meal, I had to rush home as I did not feel well immediately. I went home and slept for 2 hours. I woke up at 5 pm and saw my entire body covered with "hives." I had no clue what had happened, so we rushed to Urgent Care. After the doctor examined the rashes/hives, I found out the "grilled octopus" had some poison that causes "Scoimbroid" and the poison spread in the entire body. I was given medical treatment and medicines. I came home at 10 pm and spoke with the manager at Medi. All he said to me was - "I am sorry, but I cannot do anything here. Please take this card and send an email. Thank you." After going through what I went yesterday that was the last thing I wanted to hear. Never going back, and will never recommend this place to anyone. The management completely lacks empathy and clearly does not give a damn after putting someone's life in danger.

disappointing

By infinite1 |

the food was fair to good. The service was appalling as we waited way too long for our main dishes. The prices are high, and then they have the nerve to add 3% for using a credit card. Way too may other good restaurants in the area.

Excellent, top class, informal meal

By Corinne075 |

Having had some expensive second rate meals in NYC, this understated wine bar on 9th Ave was a delight. Fantastic customer service, and very good food. All courses were great, but the cheese board was sublime.

Great place, amazing food.

By PNWFinn |

We step in, were greeted kindly, were told there is 8 minutes left in happy hour (which a lot of places won't tell you), and made our way to the bar. The food was fantastic, the staff were all attentive and knowledgeable about menu items, but the food was the STAR. Best we've had in NYC in years.

Great brunch!!

By NHbound_11 |

Had a great Saturday brunch with friends: food was delicious, unlimited drinks (Bloody Marys, Mimosas, Peach Bellinis) for $18.00 (but only for an hour and a half, which is probably a good thing! lol) - great time!! The wine cellar looked impressive, would give it a try next time in NYC!

charming

By racgeo |

It might have been the company that I was with, that does, after all, play a huge factor in how much you enjoy your evening. So with that being said, I loved this place. We sat at the bar and ordered some appetizers and shared everything, and I enjoyed all of the food. It had a great atmosphere, the bartender, Nick was friendly when needed and unobtrusive at other times. This place has a nice vibe, its casual, relaxed and intimate.

This place is fantastic! Unbelievable burgers made from fresh Angus beef, lamb burger was perfection and paparadelli was freshly prepared with an exquisite lemon sauce! Service was excellent- servers knowledgeable, polite and accurate. Highly recommend you visit for an affordable, excellent dining experience!

Very good food and excellent service

By SeeTheW0rld62 |

We went to Medi Wine Bar for a team dinner. We were in the room in the basement/cellar which was wonderful. It was hot outside but cool down there and the room was decorated nicely. The appetizers were served family style so I got to try everything. We had bruscetta, fish cakes, and grilled veggies. All were tasty! I had the chicken cutlet for my entree. It was pounded thin with a crunchy breading and was tender. It was served with arugula, fresh lemon and cubes of blue cheese and watermelon. Others had salmon, skirt steak and lemon pappardelle pasta. Everyone enjoyed their meals. I had the Panna Cotta for dessert. It was creamy and refreshing.

Make your server write down your order

By HotelguyMD |

Wow, comedy if errors at this place. Three of the items we ordered were totally wrong.... And I mean wrong appetizer, wrong entrees. Food runners ran it to the table, dropping it off. Server didn't check on us until too late, then proceeded to tell us that we got what we ordered, then after discovering his mistake, told us what we were served was better than what we ordered. No effort to exchange or compensate us was made. Oh well. Tons if other places to choose from.

Terrific Experience

By Remmiesmom |

We recently had a company dinner at Medi Winebar. The food was out of this world! The staff could not have been more accommodating. From start to finish, the planning and execution was seamless and everyone had a great time! Thank you, Medi!!!

Nice little garden in the rear

I've eaten here a few times and never had a dish that I wasn't happy with though it's not one of my favorites

Magical little place so charming

By Rita V |

Great wine list. Nice appetizers. Not the best food and not the worst. Service was ok. Clean, straight forward. I really loved the bruschetta - in particular the chicken liver (although it was presented a bit sloppy). I enjoyed a lovely glass of bubbles and an ice cold rose so I was happy. We had a business table and the staff knew enough not to interrupt us unnecessarily, so that was very much appreciated. Wine and appetizers are the way to go.

great atmosphere

By Mark J |

Cool venue with a great atmosphere and eclectic mix of customers, fab to have an outside space although its a bit unloved - it really could do with new plants and clearing up. Food was great , lovely to sit in the sun in NYC!

Delicious tapas, great dining on garden patio

By heatherbgale |

Our cousins took us to this restaurant on our layover in New York City and it was absolutely delicious. The dates and the risotto croquettes were probably the best. The garden area behind the restaurant was very quaint and didn't feel like you were in the middle of a big city.

Great food, good service, but very noisy

By Faience44 |

A group of us came for a 10 pm dinner a few days ago and were seated downstairs, right underneath one of the many speakers playing loud music. The service was good and the food excellent. I had a great dish of meatballs made from lamb to start and then a sensational plate of fresh octopus. The wine the bar suggested was good. The only problem was that we found it hard to hear each other, thanks to the booming music and the low ceilings which sent sound waves bouncing around the room.

Exceeded expectations

By edefran |

Really nice wine bar in a busy area with tons of other restaurants. The menu was limited, with some rather odd choices, but the food was delicious. The vegetables and pastas were all very fresh. Service started off a bit unfriendly, but gradually warmed up with time. The bill at the end of the meal was a bit of a shocker - watch out for the specials - but it's New York, so I guess it shouldn't have been too surprising. A fine choice for a nice experience.

Stinky food

By Alenny |

It 's hard to believe that we went to the same place as most of the other reviewers. I must share that as a family of four with two school age kids, we were not the typical customer but still the food was horrible. My husband and i had wine which was good but that's the only thing that was good. We got a paella which had such a bad smell we had to return and get something else. Not to mention the paella was just rice, no seafood. I got the fish (branzino) which for $25 I would expect something more than a frozen piece of fillet tasting average. We also paid $20 something dollars for one of the specials which was pasta with mussels. That was ok but too expensive for pasta. My duaghter got the gnochi dish which as also below average. The tap water was impossible to drink for the smell of it and it came with no ice. We decided to have dessert elesewhere.

Surprisingly good walk-in brunch

By diver94523 |

Ad hoc visit for a quick breakfast before starting our day. We were surprised by an interesting brunch menu that had offerings we didn't expect. My wife's omelet was huge, and very tasty - she barely finished it. I tried the Shakshouka, with beef - and it was awesome. We enjoyed this in their oasis-like back patio. Highly recommended!

Very interesting menu

By joanna5463 |

Three of us tried this place on a recommendation from a local friend and it lived up to the praise. A starter of blue point oysters was very fresh as was the ceviche. Duck ragu pasta outstanding, fish of the day cooked to perfection. The menu is adventurous, service good, ambience cosy and there is a garden out the back for summer dining. We will return.

Modern, Great Vibe

By lreddy2016 |

What a cool place. Had a great brunch. Spicy baked eggs, omelettes, pasta. Lots more to entice any palette. Great selection of cocktails and wine. A place to relax and catch up over drinks and delicious food.

Good place

By fbonomi |

I went here with my customers. Good place not very expensive for manhattan standards. We got few complimentary meatball quite good then we got salads pappardelle and octopus. The octopus is very very good. Rest is fine. Place is nice not formal. Not to come back but worth a visit

Great Greek Food, Great Service!

By Arthur G |

Last week we were meeting relatives who were coming to NYC with their three young children and we wanted to find a restaurant that would accommodate 8 people and hopefully be quiet enough so we could enjoy our company and dinner. We found the perfect Greek restaurant, MEDI WINE BAR! They offered us their downstairs room where the children had the run of the place while we dined on many of their wonderful dishes and lots of "Bites". We started with Lamb Kofte: grilled lamb patties with pita bread and Tzatzki, and a few orders of their roasted garlic Humus and one of the most delicious dishes: sautéed Brussels sprouts, prepared with pistachio nuts! for our main entrees we had a selection of dishes including filet of Mediterranean Sea Bass, grilled Skirt Steak and Rib Eye Kabob. All the dishes were great and we all left feeling full and happy with the choice of this exceptional restaurant!

Fantastic house-made pasta

By ElizaDenver |

Loved sitting outside on a warm autumn night. Service was frienldy and efficient. We liked the octopus, but the highlight was the house-made pasta. Not to be missed if you try this neighborhood gem.

Go to spot in Midtown

By Jason A |

Medi is our go to spot in Hell's kitchen. Whether we go for a drink or to eat dinner this restaurant never disappoints. The wine selection is great. The food is outstanding and they have good happy hour deals on oysters and charcuterie plates during the week.

The Best of Everything!!

By CTCouple310 |

We went to Medi with friends and had a awesome time....being a wine bar they have the best of wines....The vibe is awesome! The food is amazing as well...the Hummus, my favorite!!! Really cool place to hang with friends and even a romantic night out...Highly recommend!!!!

Excellent service at this gem of a spot

Excellent service at this gem of a restaurant. We had a lovely meal on the patio with some delicious meatballs in a Tempranillo sauce, pasta and panna cotta. Highly recommend!

Half price bottles of wine

By Robert D |

I took my two daughters, who live in NYC here. They had an excellent wine selection and during "happy hour" the bottles were half price, at a good price. friendly, competent service. We ordered a couple of appetizers, which were outstanding.

Great Ambiance and Wine!

Great evening with Boyan as our server. Stopped in for drinks with friends. Had a great time with good drinks and cocktails.

Birthday celebration in Medi

By gauvzle |

There were 6 of us and we were celebrating my birthday. We started with a few appetizers and I was blown away, the Brussel sprouts, bruschetta and hummus were to die for. Service was outstanding and very accommodating. Not too pricey either. Highly recommended this beautiful spot in the city.

Good option in NYC

By Ber1010 |

Good Mediterranean style restaurant in NYC. Well located, it has a very nice terrace where you can eat if the temperature is good. The food was very good at a reasonable price considering the location in NYC.

Good food, nice ambiance, reasonable price, especially for the City

By Forfeitboy |

My wife and I made a spur of the moment date night in Manhattan. She chose Medi for dinner before the show. Delicious food. Hummus and Greek Salad for appetizers, salmon and pasta for entrees and rice pudding and creme de something for dessert. All wonderful, as well as nice choices for wine. Also had "interesting" specials, such as hummus made from cauliflower, and good selection of small plates. The portions were quite satisfying. Will return next time we go to the theater. Highly recommended.

Charming back patio, great food

By Ellen CT and NYC |

Excellent food and service. But the best part was sitting in the lovely back courtyard next to a little fountain with water trickling down! Not sure what happens to this lovely space in winter. We shared the gnocchi and mussels and they were both wonderful. A great find on 9th avenue. The waiter explained that the owner also owns the Italian restaurant around the corner that also has a back patio abutting this one. Can not recall the name of that place but it is next on our list to try.

Excellent regional wine bar

A well tailored wine list keeps you away from California standards but opens up new worlds. Food was fantastic. Very friendly and laid back atmosphere. Nice options on serving sizes encourages diversity.

Lunch after Sandy

By Anthony F |

Great soup, excellent fish and pasta. We ate here after hurricane Sandy on a recommendation. We were very pleased and recommend it, in Hell's Kitchen.

don't waste your money

By apaigefoodie |

There's really no point making a stop at this wine bar when you are in a city that is inundated with legit wine bars and good food. Was there Saturday night...the menu boasts in conjunction to wonderful wines, they have a 'superb' collection of specialty cocktails. When I asked our waiter how their Manhattan's were, his response was "I do not drink." I ordered it anyway..it was mediocre...my friends ordered wine by the glass...they had to send back the first glass because it tasted stale (it had a very pungent aroma from across the table...bottle had clearly been left open a bit too long). It's a shame since we live around the corner from this bar...but we will not be returning. Save your time and cash for a better spot.

Surprisingly good

By LesDye |

Great place in a good location. We went before going to see Denzel on Broadway and it worked swimmingly. Cocktails were good, wine selection worked well. Outdoor seating was crowded with tables from the days like when you bought crappy furniture at a garage sale, just so you'd have something. I had a ravioli with an egg yolk cooked inside. It was extraordinary. All the pasta is handmade. The artichokes were quite good.

food is good, but sometimes too heavy

By EG G |

Medi winebar has incredible food, but oftentimes, I find some of the dishes too heavy. The pappardelle a la limone is thick, and I did not get an Italian lemon-y taste. The gnochi is outrageously delicious! Tried the frittata and could only eat half because it was way too greasy. Overall the service can be categorized as great, the food is awesome, but choose wisely.

Wonderful Night

By Adie K |

I speak for myself as I was in a party of 12 and didn't order a main, but I can certainly make comment of my experience with Tapas, Ambiance and Service ..... it was awesome! We ordered a number of share plates that were delivered to the table within moments and were absolutely delicious. Service throughout the evening was attentive and the ambiance was very warming. Thank you, I would say I'll be back but the world is big and I'm travelling from Australia!

Welcoming Place, Good People Watching

By bagnato1 |

We sat outside on a crispy night, and were rewarded with a breeze and excellent service by the the friendly, conversational and efficient waiter. We shared a recommended bottle of good Slovenian wine (something I would probably not have chosen with being prompted). Nice stop.

Lovely

By Pilarwish |

We sat downstairs (charming!) the wine selection was very good, service great and the selections lovely. Beet salad, artichokes, and our entrees ... fusilli pasta with lamb and seabass. Excellent!

Must do better.

By Rangers54 |

I was across in NY in June last year and had a terrible experience of the staff being sent by the manager to ask for a bigger tip, despite leaving the normal amount by NY standards. The place serves good food but this spoilt it completely. I was across again three weeks ago and on a nice sunny day went in for drinks. The beer garden was empty yet we were told we could not sit there. We sat at a table on the pavement and despite waiting ten minutes were not approached and served. We walked out and I will not be back. Plenty other good places in the area.

In need of food

By Brian T |

Very pleasant and helpful staff. Make sure you ask to sit in the garden at the back of the restaurant it's lovely and away from the street.

Terrible owner-Terrible experience

By Victor C |

A measure of a restaurant is how much the owners care about it's food and service. We went out to dinner where we pointed out that our table was unstable. We were told nothing can be done. 10 min later the red wine glass tips all over my suit. Naturally I was upset and expected someone will come and talk to me. No one came. Then the food arrived. My pasta dish was so under cooked one of the shells was still hard (my buddy said it was uncooked and frozen in middle when he tasted it). I sent it back. Nothing was offered in return. Nothing offered as a sorry. Bill arrived, they took off the pasta but wine was there (are you kidding me) I objected they took out. Paid then I asked for manager. This guys was the owner. Didn't offer to pay to clean my suit. Didn't offer replacement food. All he said was I'm sorry and you're right about the pasta. I've never been more angry in my life of his indifference. Guys if this guy doesn't give a crap. Then he won't give a crap about where he's buying the ingredients nor the service nor anything. Stay away.

Very delicious

By 301jeannineg |

We had a very lovely eve at Medi‘s. We wanted to sit outside - Fernanda the waitress couldn‘t believe it. It was a hot eve - 87 fahrenheit or so. We we‘re the only persons at the lovely garden and Fernanda took very good care of us. The food was delicious, i gad the best Tagliatelle al limone ever. Thank you for the food, the chats and the all around service!

Super Cozy Atmosphere & Great Food!

By ajl1182 |

We decided to try Medi because of the variety on their menu...we wanted a little bit of everything. The restaurant was PACKED (we made reservations) & our server was very busy but very personable & attentive. We ordered 1/2 dozen oysters, the lamb chops & the single Ravioli with ricotta & the egg inside. All of the food was EXCELLENT!!! The lamp chops were cooked perfectly & the tzaziki sauce that came with them was amazing! The single Ravioli with the ricotta & egg has been on my bucket list of things to try at a restaurant & I was not disappointed! The flavor was incredible...so many layers of flavor!! The restaurant itself is very cozy...a great date spot. The only thing that we weren’t crazy about was that it was incredibly hot inside the restaurant but with so many people inside, I can see how it would be warm!

Food was tasteless and I got sick

By Amy C |

I am so disappointed by this place. First of all, there is nothing greek in it. I ordered the tuna tartare (which was supposed to be "delicious"). The tuna came in big chunks (1 inch!) with no seasonning, except a balsamic reduction on the side. The pasta were tasteless and swimming in a watery sauce. In addition, me and my husband felt sick during the night! The only great thing about it is the beautiful terrace in the back.

Lovely end to an evening

By christine1354 |

What a cozy, warm, welcoming place with an extensive wine list (many also reasonably priced) and delicious homemade sangria. We stopped in on Thanksgiving night after a somewhat stuffy holiday meal elsewhere, so while we didn't eat here, Medi lifted our spirits and is now on our short list of places to eat when we return to NYC.

Reasonably priced place to meet for a meal and drinks with friends

By Scott W |

I was pleasantly surprised to find this restaurant in Hells Kitchen. If you want a post or pre meal for a Broadway show, I strongly recommend that you make a trip to Medi Winebar. The name of the place belies the fact that this is a very good place to eat. The Mediterranean food hits the spot. My only criticism is that the a couple of appetizers came out at the same time as the main course.

Not so good

By ThanosT_12 |

The meat was not so tasty and the service was average. Nice and polite people who try hard but the result can be much better.

Poor restaurant

By jacares |

We wanted to simply pasta and tried to find something special.it was a complet desolation The ravioli cooked with and egg inside was insipid, my pasta was savourless without salt and yet full of water The wine was correct ; We very often eat in restaurants but for that i prefer to eat at home and it is much more better

Very nice

Great place, great atmosphere and great service. Excellent and very good cuisine. We will definitely be back for the cocktails too 😉
