Pricey, very disappointing sushi place

By Tojikins |

I ordered miso cod rolls and spicy cod rolls. The red pepper paste and mayo combination sauce was unbearable. I had two and left the rest. I have tasted much better spicy cod rolls before. Sushi/ sashimi looked better but my companion's chirashi dish was mediocre. Honestly, this place is for those who don't know sushi or Japanese food but who seek an expensive, fancy atmosphere. Not recommended for those who seek authentic, tasty Japanese sushi.

Must eat!

By Keila v |

I have been to several Japanese restaurants in New York city and this is by far my favorite place. The food was absolutely delicious and the staff was very attentive. I recommend if you're going on a Saturday night, try to arrive before 630pm because the wait time can be crazy but worth it in the end.

Very good medium-high end sushi

By Scharfster |

Excellent service in a very attractive restaurant. The highlight of the meal was the appetizers, but the sashimi very good as well. Located in an area of the UWS that is packed with lots of great dining options, you cannot go wrong here if looking for sushi. It is fairly priced, but not cheap. Servings of the sashimi dinner are very generous - you can consider sharing.

Clever twists and great standbys

By MTmaven |

Seeing kale gyoza on the menu made me curious. We were all pleasantly surprised, even delighted. The spicy tuna roll was a crowd pleaser at our table and so was the tempura sweet potato roll. The service was totally fine and the ambiance wasn't too bad at all. Definitely worth a stop if you're in the mood for sushi and don't bristle at the thought of non-traditional flare.

One of Our New Favorite Sushi Spots on UWS

By David K |

After feeling let down by other UWS sushi options, my wife and I ventured in here a couple weeks ago. We were delightfully surprised by the cool interior, lively hum from the other diners, and once we were seated, the delicious sushi. This instantly became our go-to spot for sushi and the UWS and would recommend you check it out.

Very good lunch

By orfeldm |

We had a lovely lunch , diffreng lunch menues. sushi was fresh and tasty, with a nice bottle of wine. The service was friendly.

Get her a Play Station

By islatur1 |

I have never seen a hostess that bored looking in my life, you should get her a PSP or some cards so she doesn't have that miserable look on her face. Im not sushi expert, but in my opinion the food was excellent and the service was friendly and efficient. Overall if i had the chance i would go back there.

average

By Amanda B |

Service was excellent atmosphere nice food so so. there are better places in nyc the rolls were fresh but the steak appetizer and the portion size lacked big time--they did however take it back at no charge.

Best Japanese in the area

By David B |

Reliably good, with excellent sushi and Sashimi, as well as a great kitchen selection for hot specialties.

Very good but expensive

By Edward D. |

This Japanese restaurant on the Upper West Side was very good but it was a bit expensive. The decor is modern but still comfortable. The service was attentive but not fawning. The food was well prepared and tasty.

Add a little variety to your choice of sushi and rolls

By RYN_Nyc |

Very good sushi, extremely Fresh. We have been eating sushi in the neighborhood for over 10 years and Momoya is a welcomed addition. The quality is comparable to neighboring sushi restaurants such as Haru, the prices are similar, but the menus are not the same. If you are tired of eating the same things go to Momoya to experience different dishes with no compromise on quality. Try the special rolls such as Momoya Spicy Tuna Roll, Momoya Black Cod Roll, or the Salmon Crunchy Roll to discover new twists on old classics and... Enjoy!

A very chill experience

By SCreviews |

This spot is absolutely amazing! The indoors were fancy and had a very special design. The food was also delicious (I got the Bento Box + Vanilla Ice Cream for dessert)! Not to mention the staff was extremely kind and it was a very chill area! I recommend here for a nice dinner with cousins, friends, or family!

Food was very fresh and it's only 4 blocks from the museum of natural history . The service was excellent . The decor is bright airy and very modern

Momoya is a neighborhood favorite of mine

By LuckyGuy |

I try to go to Momoya every week. It has delicious sushi and sashimi offerings that never fail to satisfy. I love their lunch specials as well. One is called "Ladies Lunch" and consists of a hearty array of miso soup or salad, crispy fried rock shrimp with spicy sauce and a lovely assortment of sushi and sashimi all for a very reasonable price. I also love the sake there!

Good for both dining in and

By Russiannewyorker |

Good for both dining in and take out. Take out are always on time and fast - 30-40 min. Food is fresh.

Some of the best sushi we've ever had

By Kingsizebossman |

Excellent experience eating here with my wife. Several neighbours share my view, the sushi is first class. We had the Momoya Spicy Yellowtail which was notably excellent with exciting flavour.

Details

By Mariarosa T |

I've been sever times and the seafood has been always fresh and well made. Atte attention to details, great ambiance and the best wine list of all the similar sushi I've visited in the island.

Thoroughly enjoyed, and recommend!

By Tee610 |

Fresh food that looks and tastes great. Generous portions at reasonable prices. "A" sanitation rating, and I can see why. I sat at the sushi bar and if a waiter noticed something out of place on the dish, he pointed to it and one of the chefs would fix it with his gloved hand (which is the right way to do it, so they aren't touching anything with their bare hands). Waitresses were pleasant, and service was fast. No complaints. Try the roasted green tea ice cream! Delicious.

Was going to be my birthday dinner...

By A. N. S. |

I was researching sushi restaurants to go to for my bday coming up. This one looked good and was on a list of best nyc sushi restaurants so decided to make reservations. Well guess what??? They don't answer the phone and there's no announcement or voicemail. Really?? Isn't this the 21st century??? That was strike one. After looking at the online reviews, it turns out that they don't take reservations. What type of business model is that??? I mean what type of restaurant doesn't take reservations???? That was strike two. Oh, and they don't even mention this on the main page of their website. That is strike three. I decided that I will be taking my business elsewhere as I am not going to put myself in a position where I am stuck waiting out in line, in the cold (as per what the online reviews are saying) on my bday, and I have no apologies. You have lost my business for good.

Just Average

By Mark G |

Went to Momoya on our search mission to find a great go to favorite sushi restaurant on the UWS. It was just average food, service was average. The most fun I have at Sushi restaurants is sitting at the bar and watching the chefs do their work, talking to them about what's good, what's fresh, what's there recommendation. Here you are separated by a marble counter that is raised up so high you cannot see the chefs making the food, it feels as if it has been done on purpose. You can barely see the chefs over the large marble counter. So considering the food was average and I could not enjoy my most important part of Sushi I won't go back to use up my calories or my hard earned money.

Terrible Service, Avoid it.

By GoPlaces657340 |

It is the worst dining experience that I have ever had in the United States. My friend made the reservation for a table of 3 at 5:30. We arrived at 5pm. They gave us a table after some negotiations. But when we had the dinner together, the waiters and waitresses continued to interrupt our conversation by asking us if we were done and if everything was OK. Totally eight times from around 5:40 to 6:40, we had to stop our conversation and answered their inquires. In the beginning, we ordered four dishes. Around 6:20, because we wanted to stay longer, we ordered two more. We spent money there, but around 6:40, the manager came and asked us to leave by 6:45. We had a reservation. Even if we did not, no one should be treated this way.

Lower East Sider will Travel to Upper East Side

By NYFoodDude |

Fresh and well prepared sushi. Hot, cooked food done well. Went with 8 people. Only problem is no reservations so large parties wait. But it was worth it. Will definitely go back, even if i'm not planning on being on the upper west side. Agree with others - a little on the expensive side.

Excellent Japanese restaurant

By Butterfn |

Dropped in on Momoya by chance after our daughter had completed the New York City Marathon (3:48 time) on a wonderful fall day. Lunch time is to 4:30 pm. My wife had the udon noodle soup with breaded dipped vegetables; I had the breaded dipped vegetables and shrimp, light and delicious; My daughter a full plate of sushi. A fine but not overwhelming wine selection - daughter and wife liked the Pino Grigio. I waited for the hot saki to finish, very nice but not the same kick as in Tokyo. Service quick, generous servings, and a friendly but not too noisy atmosphere.

Great Sushi! Great Find!

By WarrenFretwell |

I've been visiting the upper west side for years and this was my first experience at Momoya Sushi. It won't be my last. There is another location in Chelsea and, if the food is as good, I'll like that store, too! The ambiance is modern, upscale, but comfortable and cozy, inasmuch as the tables are close enough that you can get to know your neighbors very well. We exchanged comments about the food we ordered--all of which looked very good. My wife and I started out with the 5 Color Salad (Arugula, Daikon, Seaweed Wasabi Vinaigrette). Excellent and large portions. All ingredients were very fresh. The two ladies at the table next to us had the mixed green salads and they were also very large. For our entrees, we ordered spicy tuna roll and Momoya black cod. Both were excellent. We skipped dessert, saving that for a little later (cherry pie at the Manhattan Diner on 94th and Broadway). Add two drinks and the final price was very reasonable. Note: Momoya also serves kitchen dishes--not just sushi. They looked good, too! I will definitely come back. We watched the sushi chefs prepare their decorative concoctions at the sushi bar behind our table and some of them were, simply, works of art. Momoya is open from 12-11pm Sunday--Thursday and from 12-11:30pm on Friday and Saturday. It appears to be very popular. We got the last table available!

Good sushi, pleasant setup

By GusNewYork |

The Upper West Side of Manhattan is not known as one of the culinary Meccas of the world, or even of the city, but it does have its fair share of above-average places. Momoya serves better than usual sushi in a better than usual ambience.

Best sushi on the Upper West Side...

By Jo Ellen D |

My husband and I visit Momoya at least once while in NYC for monthly visits. He is the sushi lover and I can handle a little salmon and tuna with edemame and a roll or 2...nothing too raw for me. He loves everything he has ever eaten at Momoya. We like to sit at the bar and Taka takes very good care of us along with the hostess and wait staff. We have had a very good experience at least 98% of our visits. It gets very busy after 8 but is never too noisy. The prices are reasonable as well unlike some of the other sushi restaurants in NYC. Hope you try it and enjoy!

Some of the Best Sushi Around

By texigator |

Having been on a little sushi kick on this trip, I thought I would try Momoya, which is next door to another sushi place I tried a few days ago. I was very glad I did. Although the edamame appetizer was rather ordinary, everything else was outstanding. The pork dumplings were very tender, moist and flavorful. Both sushi rolls were excellent. The rainbow roll, with tuna, shrimp, and yellowtail was huge, but well made and stayed together. The fish was very fresh. My favorite roll, the spider, was the largest roll I've ever seen. It was chocked full of avacado, asparagus and a large soft shell crab, flavored with a spicy sauce that was delicious. For $55, including tip, it was all a great meal.

A good sushi on the upper west side

By Nitsanz |

Really good, imaginative and fresh sushi . Siting outside is fun in the evening, if you're in the neighborhood.

Got my sushi fix at Momoya!

By Marci R |

While visiting NYC our friend took us to dinner at Momoya and we were not disappointed! Great location, easy access from the subway (which was helpful for us newbies to the city) and the food was fantastic. I haven't had such good sushi since our trip to San Diego in January. My cravings were definitely satisfied. Our 16 yr old daughter doesn't care for sushi so she had the chicken teriyaki and for the first time during our trip she actually cleaned her plate. She loved it. We all enjoyed the miso soup and edamame too. The atmosphere is very relaxing, but artsy cool, not the usual Asian decor with all fish tanks. We really liked it there and will definitely be back on our next visit to the city.

Nice venue, good value for money

By Diverstroms |

Had a late lunch here, and we were happy with everything; the salad and especially the dressing was wonderful, sushi good, tempura okay. Service was friendly and quick, and the venue nice and modern.

perfect sushi - and outside seating

By X-NYr |

We were trying to decide among the many sushi options on the UWS, and we wanted to sit outside. We overlooked the negative reviews on Yelp (what's wrong with those people), and went with the good Zagat and Michelin ratings and mostly good TA reviews. Good choice! The sushi was freshly prepared, and the warm brown rice was worth the extra charge. The edamames and yoshito peppers were outstanding. Service was good and the food was worth waiting for. I can't remember the last time we had such splendid sushi, and the parade along Amsterdam Ave. for entertainment. Nice service once the waitress warmed up a bit.

Like Japanese food.then do NOT miss this place!

By ronsF6171VH |

Japanese, The hot mushroom appetizer was GREAT--SHARE there is a lot! Brussels Sprouts Honey Butter, Walnut, Togarashi 11.5 Again SHARE! we were there for the brunch specials but they serve that also everyday for lunch till 4:30 pm: I had *Sushi Sushi & Sashimi Combo 3 pc sushi, 6 pcs Sashimi, California roll, $20 The fish was so fresh and GREAT! The drinks. I was delighted with my refillable green tea!

Great neighborhood sushi

By Katie K |

I eat at Momoya a few times a month - the sushi is always solid and it's easy to get a table. The Hamachi appetizer and the crispy rice are my favorites - I don't usually even read the menu.

Delicious and efficient

By crinkle11 |

I have had nothing but good experiences at both the Chelsea and Upper West Side branches of this restaurant. Their operation is elegant, stylish and efficient. Sushi tastes super-fresh and the signature rolls are excellent. Many of the hot dishes I have had were very good too (roasted Brussels sprouts, shumai, udon).

Poor experience

By Mayshad Woman |

Terrible food, sushis were thick and chewy. The service is ok but we literally couldn't eat more than 10 percent of our order.

Great sushi

By Tal B |

A little bit croweded (sitting on each other). The sushi there is good. Take the crispy rice roll, you want regret on it. Have fun

Fresh ** 3

By MK330 |

Nicely decorated Japanese restaurant and attentive service. Momoya is fast becoming our go-to place for lunch get-together...very fresh sushi and well-prepared hamachi kama...we do end up always ordering the same dishes, but why risk anything else when you've found a winner?

A Great Sashimi

By Alfred B |

I was in the mood for Sushi and was on the upper west side (not my usual neighborhood) and stopped in at the restaurant because it looked attractive and friendly. Indeed the staff was very friendly and accommodated us without a reservation. It is a very busy restaurant and the noise level is moderate, the music unobtrusive. The prices are reasonable and the food is great. I had some of the best and freshest sashimi I have ever had. The portion was huge and very attractively presented. Based on only one visit, I would recommend and will return soon.

Love the Crispy Rice Roll

By Dave W |

Great Sushi restaurant on the upper west side. Nice decor and service inside and outside dining in the summer. The Crispy Rice roll is awesome

Nice neighborhood Japanese restaurant

By Alegna72 |

One of the best teriyaki I’ve ever had! Lean and very tasty, a delicious, healthy meal, which was filling, but not overwhelming. Prices are reasonable for what you get. Nice go to Japanese restaurant in the neighborhood. Worth a visit!

A little out of the ordinary & very good quality

By Lauren S |

The decor is simple and modern making for a pleasant dining experience. There a lot of choices on the menu, from the familiar sushi to more elaborate, creative rolls and entrees. The service was also quite good - appropriate timing between courses and attentive staff. Sweet potato tempura roll was best I've every had! White sweet potato with crispy coating that was still hot (but not too hot) and yummy till the last bite. Other highlight was miso black cod appetizer. I would definitely go back and recommend to anyone looking for a quality dining experience on UWS.

Great lunch spot

By jnj182 |

A very modern restaurant with a good selection of sushi, sashimi, and other Japanese food like teriyaki and tempura. Everything is freshly prepared and very tasty. I especially like the teriyaki box lunch, you can choose chicken or salmon. It includes a sampler of a variety of foods, like tempura shrimp and california roll.

Sushi at its best without breaking the bank

By lovetotravel423 |

I am not really a sushi fan but my business guests were so had to look for olace that woyld not break the bank so to speak. Momoya UWS just converted me. Their menu is fun and creative, i couldnt get over the yummy Brussel sprouts with walnut and honey, so creative. I also had the crispy avocado with lobster though the avocado was not really crispy but was delish. The servicebis just phenomenal.the waiters are there to ease and always checking on you without annoyance and interruption.they just do eye contact to see if you needed anything. I woyld go back there again!

Good but not great

By Jon |

We are fine eating here and like it best for sushi that is reasonably priced. But there is room for improvement on both food and atmosphere.

Love it - Should be 5* but i can't make a reservation

By 3galsontour |

Title says it all. Want to be able to plan a trip here but no reservations allowed. Not an overwhelming issue as the crispy rice and tuna ,makes up for any deficiencies. Seriously tasty.

Momo Yeah

By tablesedge |

Black cod, spicy tuna special rolls. Perfection. Hot red snapper's sauce wonderful. Roasted duck buns, tasty and moist. Freshest ingredients from heirloom tomatoes with blueberry wasabi dressing to roasted brussel sprouts. This is an Upper West Side Nobu-esque creative find. Service delightful.

Great UWS Japanese restaurant

By PrinceConsort |

Just went here for lunch after a museum visit and a walk. We weren't familiar with the restaurant, and didn't even know that it was Japanese until we went in. Uncrowded both inside and out on a Sunday early afternoon. Excellent food, good service, reasonable price.

Very Good mid level Japanese Restaurant

By BigTravelGuru |

The food was over all above average. The restaurant was mice and comfortable. The Sushi Bar look nice as well. The service was excellent. One highlight was the Ginger Cod app. Fantastic and perfectly cooked. The rolls were OK, however under seasoned.I would come back again

Trendy and tasty Japanese on Amsterdam Avenue

By EANYC |

This is Japanese with a youthful vibe. The appetizers are all good (popcorn shrimp Japanese style among them) and the sushi and maki rolls are fresh and well-presented.

Awesome sashimi

By Roar O |

Had the sashimi entree. It was a great and fresh selection served on a bowl of ice. Cool setup. Price 32$ inkl a bottle of Sapporo.

Good Japanese

By ErikaGohde |

We ate here one evening. The tempura was very good. Overall a decent Japanese food experience. The service was however on the slow side. We preferred the other Japanese restaurant close by at the same street, but probably only as a matter of taste as their menu and interior pleased us more.

Excellent fresh food

By ina504 |

Very fresh food, good service nice for families. Prices not bad for NYC. Sashimi really excellent as well as creative rolls.

Very Good Sushi. LOUD LOUD LOUD Environment

By DJKTraveler |

Even though you can't hear the person sitting across from you due to the horrible acoustics and the loud crowd this place seems to attract, the sushi is very good. That said, the service is haphazard and stumble-bumble and the prices are quite high. For us, a spread of sushi, salmon teriyaki and a bottle of wine, plus a soup starter and two shared desserts, the tab for three of us was about $250. Beware.

Great service and presentation. Every item we tried we loved.

By jjpaige |

Great service and presentation. Every item we tried we loved.

Great food

By Margaux N |

The ladies lunch is my fav. It's always super clean in here too - always a good thing. Sushi is good. Service is average. Little bit expensive.

Very nice experience for those who like Japanese cuisine

By DI LIBERTI R |

Excellent place and excellent dishes for an evening to spend with your partner. Very nice place, top food

Beautiful but Not Gluten Aware

By Black_Sox_Manager |

The sushi was beautiful as was the trendy setting. There was a healthy lunch business. The portions were not large, and these were definitely New York City prices. The wine list was interesting, and the mark up on wines was reasonable. They could provide tamari for a gluten free diner, but no gluten free miso soup or salad dressing. Fortunately, they managed oil and vinegar.

Nice neighborhood, average sushi

By yves_alexis |

I thought that the rice, a more than essential part of any good sushi, was a little dry and had too much vinegar in it. Fish was good but not the finest quality, tamago not too my liking either. Appetizers such as wakame salad or gomaee (spinach) were excellent. Staff helpful and welcoming

Real sushi

By Fabercas |

Had a delivery while in New York and I was positively impressed. Both noodle and chirashi was lovely not talking about sushi: honestly it was probably the closest I had to match the quality of the japanese ones. Prices are in line with New York top restaurants so it well worth a visit/delivery.

Disappointing

By MrFiodie |

I came to sit on the bar. From the outside looked promising. Had three roll they were all ok even tasty but they were was too much fuss about them.

Delicious !

By Carole P |

Fish is amazing, so tasty. It's very good and price is correct for the quantity. You can discover new type of raw fish

Great Japanese food superb sushi

By DJtrinivibes |

I am so happy to find this Japanese restaurant in NYC. We walked around Central Park and craved sushi and this was the closest spot from where we were and it was great. We were greeted with smiles and the place was very nice. Food was superb but I must say the sushi was excellent. Price was great also for being in Manhattan. I wished I had ordered more sushi. Lol. They also have a lovely eat-in area and outside eating area to enjoy the city. Very romantic inside I must say. A must try when in the area and enjoy! Trust me and thank me later

Great sushi sashimi place

By SusannaM_11 |

We are spoiled with the quality of Japonica down at University place but living all the way uptown we are happy to have found Momoya. Beside a very good sashimi (chirashi is also great) there are many different other things to try. Presentation is also very nice. Hot sake very good. No room for dessert this time. Will go back.

Fresh Sushi in a quiet setting

By Lornadoone |

This upbeat Japanese restaurant has great service, fresh fish and interesting rolls and appetizers. It's a great choice for a quick bite on the upper west side.

very good sushi, good for families too

By otrgirl |

We went at 5 on a Sunday and there were other families with young kids. The place was not full at all and the service was very fast and attentive. We had the black cod roll roll with fresh ginger and Shisho- very good. We also had the Chef's choice for Nigiri-- we got to try wonderful new sushi. Kids had tempura and Udon- very good as well. Nice spot, reasonable prices.

Lovely Valentine's day dinner

By KazfromSydney |

Our son had fallen asleep on the way to this restaurant where we had only intended to get take-out, so we took the opportunity to dine-in instead. We ordered edamame, a ceviche, gyoza, sashimi platter, a Valentine's day special sushi with asparagus and fois gras, wine and beer - all of which were nice and fresh. The space was great with a warm and contemporary feel. One of the more spacious restaurants in the neighborhood with lots of room for our large stroller with our sleeping baby. Host and serving staff were nice and polite. All in all, we had a very enjoyable, unexpected date night!

good sushi choice on the upper West side

By westcoastguy77 |

While pricey, Momoya is a solid choice for sushi on the UWS. The fish is consistently fresh and we always enjoy their salads. Sometimes the chef is a little aggressive with seasoning so if you like your food on the mild side be sure to mention this to your server.

Underwhelming

By Fernando T |

I've been using the Michelin guide for restaurants for more than 30 years now. Until today it had failed me only once. I regret to report this is the second time. In a city where the sushi offer is so big and so good, a sushi place has to be special to merit inclusion in the Michelin guide. My sushi plate was OK but ordinary. The fish was good quality but the rice was too mushy. Nice wine selection and attentive service. New York prices. Perhaps I should give it another chance, at dinner.

Very Good, but

By bergfischer |

Having tried the 7th Avenue branch for several lunches and having enjoyed the various Sushi offerings and an excellent Hamachi Kama (Yellow tale neck!) I tried the uptown branch for dinner. Still as modern and efficient as it was years ago, the only things that changed were the prices! The sushi and Chirashi became more American, bigger pieces, less choice, more "safe" fish type! The Chirashi was in a large bowl, not very handy to eat from. There were 7 different fish slices, including "white Tuna", which I didn't want. There was no fluke, no mackerel, no squid, no miso soup. Good but not that much Japanese anymore.

Always Delicious

By physiciantraveler |

This is a surprisingly innovative Japanese restaurant. Fish is super fresh. I love the fried rock shrimp and all the rolls. Great to eat in at the bar (in front) or take away.

A Surprising and Welcome Find

By Kenneth J |

We arrived in NYC in the late afternoon after a day of travel. In the mood for sushi but wanting something simple we checked out Momoya. It as a great find! Good sushi, good service and reasonable prices. We’ll probably return before the end of our trip.

Affordable fresh sushi

By dancinggoats |

Small but friendly. Service is over the top. Fish is fresh, even the Uni. On the night we were there they had a special dish of brussel sprouts that was one of the most amazing dishes I have had the pleasure of tasting. Roasted with honey butter and walnuts, I would kill for the recipe. And the prices are not typical New York! Very affordable, 3 of us got out, stuffed, for under 80 dollars! this was our second meal there and I can't wait to go again!

Great for weekend lunch

By David L |

Enjoyable lunch. Great service and excellent food. Weekend lunch was relaxed and not noisy. Highly recommend.

Not a Sushi Lover, but Plenty here

By Susie R |

Although I don't do raw fish, the japanese specialities are superb. Especially the grilled eggplant and tempura rock shrimp.

GREAT JAPANESE FOOD

By Marie B |

We love to go to Momoya for delicious Japanese food ! The restaurant on the Upper West Side is beautiful, the service is very friendly and impeccable - the personnel is very attentive which is not often the case in other restaurants and the food is simply delicious and varied ! Forget about the Japanese food cliche ! It is more than sushi and sashimi ! Momoya has all kinds of delicious dishes with salmon, chicken and tender beef and we recommand the delicious Kale dumplings as a starter - We recommand Momoya very highy !

A good find for sushi on the Upper West Side

By mikethegoodlife |

We dropped in for an early lunch and left full, happy and very pleased with our new find. The food was very fresh and well seasoned and the service was courteous and quick. We had the noodles and the bento box. The noodles and the broth were great as was the combination in the lunch box. We'll be going bac soon.

sushi/sashimi presented in a way I've never seen!

By Jenna P |

You can never beat fresh and tasty sushi and sashimi. Even better if the dinners only runs $27 or $29! Add the clever presentation - sashimi in a huge bowl of ice with big leaf. Shishito peppers hit the spot, along with the agedashi tofu to start. Sashimi/Sushi combo is filling with large slices or fish and tasty. Sashimi ditto. Great vibe. Good service. No surprise it was packed even at 5:30 on a Sat. night. I'll return.

Great sushi in a nice location

By GaiusOctavius04 |

The restaurant has a modern style. It is not that small like others in Amsterdam Avenue. The wall consists of small wood piece in different size. It looks like a Yenga game. The restaurant was also not that noisy. We had sushi. Excellent! There are many sushi places in the neighborhood, but I can hardly imagine that there is a better one. Try also the special rolls. They are a little bit more expensive, but absolutely superb.

Top-notch. One of the better Manhattan Sushi places I've ever eaten.

By GeeWhy2015 |

This was a great experience across the board. The location is small but stylish, the environment has energy but isn't overwhelming. We were two couples dining out and our server was great, young Japanese woman on her game, super sharp and likable. As to the food, no misses here. We started with the Sashimi entree (15 pcs for $25), Shishito Peppers and the Fried Avocado with Lobster Salad appetizer ($15). All were fantastic. The sashimi was fresh, our waitress accommodated our wish to not have octopus and subbed for more fish, great portion, super fresh, cut nicely. The shishito peppers are a favorite and were very good, I would have preferred them slightly more seared but that's a trivial detail. The fried avocado pieces were four 1/4 cuts of an avocado lightly battered and flash fried topped with a delicious lobster salad and served over a smoky soy-based liquid - phenomenal. For our sushi we ordered four or five rolls from their creative and somehow unique house combinations, all were very good with the exception of one that had a raspberry sauce and almonds. This one wasn't bad, but was nothing special. The others were all very very good. We felt that you couldn't go wrong with any of the choices from their "house roll" section of the menu. All in all, it was a great experience, great place, great services, great food. Highly recommended.

Cover your hands

By IWasThereYesIWas |

New York City health code requires all restaurant workers handling food to wear gloves. I ate at the sushi bar on 7/12/15 and say one of the sushi chefs not wearing gloves as he prepared sushi. I reported this to the manager Jimmy who told the chef to put gloves on. 10 minutes later the same sushi chef was not wearing gloves. Again I spoke with Jimmy who seemed unable to make sure health code is followed. I asked who the owner was and he claimed the owner was in South Korea. I will not be dining at this restaurant in the future. The do not take due professional care to make sure your health is protected. I encourage all who dine there to be careful and tell the restaurant to follow the health code.

High quality food, ample variety of rolls, very clean athmosphere

By Manoela Talula V |

We visited this restaurant at lunch while walking on the Amsterdam on a Monday morning without any reservation. We were sited at the only left table close to the entrance. The choice of rolls and specialty is quite ample and acceptable, the size and preparation were very good. Edamame were cooked at the ideal time and not overcooked, as in many sushi places, and miso soup was smelling great. Definitely the best sushi restaurant over the three tasted in the last month here in New York.

neighborhood sushi I have probably eaten over 40 times

By Richard10024 |

This is currently our standard sushi restaurant in the neighborhood. I like their spicy tuna which is prepared differently in different restaurants (more chopped than the neighboring sushi restaurant which uses bigger pieces). They have a nice lunch special with 3 rolls. They have all the standard sushi options plus a few special rolls with mango and other sauces. I try and be careful where I eat sushi as its raw fish. There are fancier and more expensive restaurants in the neighborhood (and in other parts of New York). This has a nice combination of price, quality and distance from my home. They also have unfiltered sake, cooked food options and miso soups and salad.

Not bad. Not bad at all.

I was convinced to try this place due to good ratings I saw it received. I ordered out and my order was ready pretty soon after I arrived. While I was waiting I noticed the place looked quite nice, with clean décor and some space between tables. The people I encountered were nice and courteous. The sushi itself wasn't bad at all. I'd go back to this place again and perhaps try more than sushi.

Very fresh sashimi

Was looking for some Asian style food as had been over indulgent on rich European cuisine last 3 weeks in the States. The wild mushroom soup was clear consommé with a variety of mushroom. Just what my liver could tolerate. The highly rated lobster spring roll was good but on the dry side and should be accompanied by a more tangy dip than the salty soy based one. The sashimi entree was excellent value with thick perfectly cut and perfectly chilled 7-8 types of fish.

delicious food, delightful staff

I met a friend here for lunch, it was very busy, we were seated initially at the end of a long banquette with many talkative customers and I could see we'd have trouble hearing one another over the din so I asked if we could move to the unoccupied back section which was quiet and empty. The waitress was hesitant at first but then quite amenable. We moved, and had a chance to sit and talk and catch up while eating wonderful food. We both got one of the lunch specials - salmon teriyaki with grilled asparagus, carrots and fingerling potatoes - every morsel delicious and such a pleasure to have staff who cared that we enjoyed our lunch and time together.

Found passing

The quality was not bad, but honestly waited too long, they brought orders very slowly, and in the end we spent a lot on what little was eaten. Definitely not going back

Not what it used to be

For a few years we enjoyed going there. Food, presentation, ambiance were enjoyable. Last night only the ambiance was good. The food was mostly bland, with the sashimi presented in a huge, pretentious bowl of ice. It will be a while before we return.

Thank G-d for this fab sushi restaurant on the UWS. My whole family loves the vibe when we go there..and we are regulars on the ordering in menu.... Cannot say enough good things! So thrilled they are here....

Good food, beautifully presented

The restaurant looks modern, and the place is lively. The sushi was good, just like everyone else's. The other dishes, like the black cod, were beautifully presented and they were well prepared. The service was efficient and pleasant. I'd come back.

Yum

Enjoyed Momoya with friends... Clean, airy restaurant... Fresh sushi, well prepared and creatively presented... Friendly and professional staff... Great experience. This sushi restaurant is just a few doors down from one of my favorite sushi spots on the upper west side... I'm surprised Momoya took the risk to open a restaurant on the same block... Definitely a battle of the sushi chefs. Definitely worth a try.

Best Sushi on the UWS

Our favorite sushi restaurant. Great service and attention to detail. Lunch specials are available, but we usually order a la carte. If you've never had it, I suggest you get a Salmon Skin Hand Roll.

Casual but very food sushi

This is a neighborhood restaurant by NY standards and it fulfills expectations. Service is efficient and focused. The food is great with all the usual Japanese favorites done very well. We had tempura and sushi and really enjoyed it. There were tables of families, friends and couples as you'll see in NY. The pace was prompt without being pushy and the price was right. A great stop in the Upper West side.

Always reliable!

My family has been eating here for years, and I have to say, we've never had a bad meal. I don't think we've even had a mediocre meal -- everything has been quite good. The only drawback is that they don't take reservations, but as we tend to eat either on the early side or the late side, we've rarely had to wait long. The sushi is fresh and delicious, and all the cooked foods are good, as well. And it doesn't matter how many times we eat here, I ALWAYS get the sweet miso black cod -- it's just that good. Service is attentive and prompt. Some reviewers complain about the prices, but it's in a high-rent area, and they have to pay their bills, so...
