My mother and I LOVE dosas so I knew we had to visit this cart if we were ever in Greenwich Village. (Both my mother and I are vegans and she was visiting from FL.) We found the cart NO PROBLEM and there weren't too many people waiting since it was only 11:30AM. We ordered masala dosas waited while they cooked. He cooks them to order so it takes a little longer than most street carts but its so worth it. When they were ready we took them back to the park to sit and people watch. OMG the doses were amazing! So perfectly crisp and tasty. We ordered mild so it wasn't too spicy but the sambar was delicious and the coconut chutney was the best I've ever had. Definitely worth a trip to Washington Square Park to try these dosas!

What a find !! Unassuming kiosk on entrance to the Square provided a tasty pancake style dosa ( nothing like you would get in Bradford) with all kinds of relish . Clearly has a big regular following from the university and just the job after a foot slogging venture into Greenwich and beyond....

We had a lovely street food lunch here. I've never had street food before as I'm too fussy but this was top notch. Im totally envious of the locals as I'd be eating here several times per week. We had what the vendor recommend for us. Highly recommended Thank you :)

Whenever I find a place that serves yummy food I think twice whether it's good to write a recommendation – and the queue in front of the NY Dosas cart around noon is already pretty long. But on the other hand people simply have to try Thiru's awesome food, and when you saw him preparing the food, having a little chat with his customers (being always polite, friendly, happy and thankful), you simply want him to sell as much of his wonderful dishes as possible. I tried the Roti Curry (unfortunately it wasn't Thursday when I went there as I wanted to try the Singapore Noodles) and a Samosa – and it was so incredibly good, I still get hungry every time I just think about it. I love the Indian cuisine which means I tried a lot Indian dishes all over the world, but at this small and non-descript cart I had one of the best (and cheapest) ever. I'll definitely come back!!

for dosas whenever I'm nearby for many years. Reasonably priced and well worth the wait. Why do you think there is a line when he opens? Is you like spice ask for it! I also like the vegetarian drumsticks with chili sauce!

We visited the park in a rush because we were running late for a Statue of Liberty trip. The owner was lovely and rushed to make our lunch so we made our trip in time! The food was lovely, it's amazing how they make food this tasty on a little trolley. We even got a free t-shirt!

As one of the most famous food carts in Greenwich Village, both the food and the proprietor live up to their reputation. Thiru is kind and looks you straight in the eye - asking you what you want and how he can make it for you - and then he gets straight to work, delivering up a large, South Indian meal unlike any dosa I've ever tasted. Full of vegetables and potatoes, coming with a side of chutney and soup, the dosa was warming and filling for a very low price. Would love to go back!

Quite possibly yes! Even if you don't usually eat a vegan meal see for yourself why Thiru's NY Dosas are known around the world. You'll find him in Washington Square Park at lunchtime until he sells out sometimes as early as 3 PM in the afternoon. Check his Facebook page to see if he is open when you want to go or call (917) 710 2092 Generous portions of perfectly seasoned ingredients cusomized to your liking or order one of his standard items My favorite is the Pondicherry masala dosa which is a South Indian crepe with a grilled thin lentil-and-rice-flour wrapper and then spreading on curried potatoes, and sprinkling a crunchy dice of carrots and peppers and served with a gingery coconut chutney and a small tub of spicy lentil soup. A meal this good for under $10 in New York is a bargain!

I have never been to this foodcart though I live in NYC. Recently, I saw a lot of write-ups in youtube channels and so I decided to give this a try and I am very happy that I did. The owner usually tweets out before he opens his store and this is important becuase even if his schedule says Monday through Saturday but somedays he doesn't open. This being the Summer time and NYU students out. I went there on a monday at around 11:30 am. He had about 7-8 people then in ifront of me. We got 2 pondicherry masala dosas at $9.00 each, two samosaa at 3.00 each and 2 waters @$1.00 each. The total wait for us was avout 20 mins because the owner cooks fresh everyone. We sat at the park bench and we can say this is one of the best dosas in NYC. I know this will probably bring in more people but he already got a long line everyday anyway. Should try and yes it is better than curry hill dosas!

Ordered the Masala Dosa - $9, Samosa - $3 and water - $1. Food was great, authentic Indian and priced very reasonably. Thirukumar Kandaswamy is the Dosa Man, a wonderful human being who is friendly and patient. The lines are long and people leave satisfied and happy and are back again and again. He is a NYC legend who should be honored. Would recommend to everyone and would keep coming back whenever I can.

Before arriving on New York we did our research for different styles of food we wanted to try during our stay. Our 1st google check the NY Dosas man in Washington square , we also checked the youtube video and we were sold to try out these famous Indian vegetable dosas. A quick check on social media and we were given the green light that he would be in Washington square between 11-3pm. The queue were getting longer , we ordered 2 specials and our daughter ordered No3 from the menu. Top food expertly cooked , all fresh produce , the prep and cooking was a art ,the delivery on our plates had us drooling , a short walk away and we sat down to tuck in - the flavors and spices were spot on , not much conversation , the silence was so we could take in the “NY Dosas experience” All i can say is “believe the hype” the food is spot on and affordable. Thank you once again and good luck and good health for 2020.

Thiru makes the best vegetarian dosas I've ever had. Also delicious veg drumsticks (soy) with sugar cane "drumstick" which you dip in sweet chili sauce! Best outdoor Village meal from a very decent guy who's been doing this a loooong time and does it well. Pondicherry is my fave! Great sides like coconut chutney to go with.

Came upon it by chance; wonderful dosas and idlis. But most importantly the chutney was outstanding--the best I have ever had. The owner/chef is charming

Consistently excellent, reasonably priced. Why it's worth waiting on line, no matter how long! Thiru is a village gem, great food and a nice guy too!

We had heard about NY Dosa from friends in London, as we originate from Sri-Lanka we have had our fair share of Dosa. But uncle Thiru's were out of this world! He gave us a cup of warm sambar as we decided what we wanted to order. We went in January so lucky for us he was very quiet so we didn't have to wait long. The ingredients were so fresh and the Dosa was so tasty. We are usually big meat eaters but we didn't miss it at all! Portions or so big and very filling! He has taken something so simple and made it wonderful! We left very inspired and with very happy tummies! Thank You! (make sure you check his twitter to ensure he is in the park when you choose to visit)

If you plan to visit NYC anytime soon, then I am sure one of the things on your mind and something you have already heard of is food trucks. Apart from tons of choices, amazing restaurants and food with all price ranges .. Food trucks are well know for their amazing food. During my trip this(Sept 2015) year, I wanted to try Dosa truck which I read quite a bit about online. I kid you not, the NY Dosa food lived upto expectation!! The truck is right around the corner in Washington square(great spot for ppl watching in NYC ), amazing place to grab dosa, chill and do some ppl watching. Me and wife had Pondacherry Dosa, yummy, very authentic and made with love and passion. You can taste in the food. The guys makes it in front of you on the food truck..very authentic .. Just like it's done in streets of India and food was spot on.

A friend took me to this food cart and said I had to try these. Well I am so glad he did!!! These were so delicious! The gentleman who owns the cart and does all the cooking was so friendly and answered any questions even though he was busy. I absolutely loved this food!!!!

we had read about this food cart online and planned a visit before we went and we are so glad that we went. he is so friendly and even invited my two teenagers to the back of his cart to check out how he made the food and let them cook a little bit of the food! he was fabulous and gave us samples of everything! vegan food heaven! we took our food over to some of the benches in Washington Square and people watched and just enjoyed the delicious food. we even went back for more after we ate our first batch! He is there most days, but check him out on his twitter just incase - http://twitter.com/#!/nydosas - you want to make sure he is there when you are!

This food was SO GOOD!! I love that there is a vegan street food option. I had the masala dosa which was only $8 and very filling. Glad to see they had a lot of business fir lunch.

I had read the reviews of this tiny street cart on Washington Square in New York. The dosas (Indian crepes made of rice and lentils) are crisp and perfect. The gentleman who is the owner is incredibly nice and friendly. Although we took ours dosas back to the apartment, it would have also been just as lovely walking a few steps and eating them in Washington Square Park while we "people watched". He's only there from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Just delicious. Enjoy!

What great Indian food! A doses to me was a little like a crepe filled with spicy potatoes and veggies. But that description doesn't make it sound special, and it is! Bypass all the cheap hot dog stands and get some outstanding flavor. Warning though, thensoup is hot (spicy)! All vegan, so splurge on an extra appetizer like the drumstick, because even though it's fried, it's still somewhat healthy and so good.

Kandasamy is a 20 year veteran of the Washington Sq park located close to NYU. The line reflects the expectations set by his consistent food quality. While the wait can be fun watching people in the adjacent park, the best part is when you get to hop over the metal chain and place your order. He is someone who enjoys meeting people and cooking for them. He has an intelligent almost sage-like demeanor with a welcoming smile. The choices are simple but perfect. The quality of his food is very good with a consistent taste reminiscent of South India. The dry chutney is very unique and memorable. The samosas are a must as they are distinct in both taste and their large size. Kandasamy is very friendly and someone who enjoys serving people as evidenced by his repeat customers whom he recognizes instantly and provides a personal touch. Worth traveling across states to relish this vegan gem in New York.

Tried "Special Pondicherry" (Type of Masala Dosa) and it is one of the worst I had. You can pick any Indian restaurant in Lexington Ave and Masala Dosa you get there is much better than this. Not worth waiting that long. I'm not sure about non Indians, but Indians who would have eaten lot of Masala Dosa's before won't find this tasty at all. It seems most of the Indians are, first times who come here because of the publicity. Also there is assumption that longer the line, better the food

We went on our first day in NYC which was Friday. For lunch, we sought out NY Dosas since we badly wanted some good, authentic Indian grub. There was a line when we got there and it was 94 deg F that day. Was it worth the wait of over 30 minutes? Heck yeah! The dosa was amazing and the samosas were tasty. We got both at spicy level. They also came with sauces. The dosa came with coconut chutney - amazing! We paid $18 for the dosa, two samosas and two bottles of water. Definitely a good value for your money for NYC. We learned they’re taking some time off and won’t be back until Tuesday so I’m glad we went today. The owner was extremely friendly and engaging. I can totally see why he is famous. I’d be a regular if I lived in the area.

incredible samosas, quick and easy spot to pick up them up and enjoy in the park...

My husband saw “the dosa man” on a YouTube video from Vice and I had to try it. He’s located on the south side of Washington Square Park. Food cart is open from 11-3 and usually Monday through Saturday most of the time. I got there around 2:30, so some of his regular foods were out. He made me an off the menu special kale dosa. It was delicious! My phone auto corrected delicious to sensuous, and I almost left it because it was that good! Dosa is a rice pancake made with batter—mine was crispy and soft at the same time somehow, and packed with tasty well seasoned potatoes and kale. He also added a cup of soup and some spices and sauce on the side. His food is so terrific, I want to try all of his dishes. He makes every single thing fresh and from scratch (I watched him). He is also a super nice man, always laughing and smiling. I’ll be back, maybe even later this week!

I love street food and this is exceptional. Plus I can enjoy my lunch in the beauty of Washington Sq Park. Fantastic. I live and work in Brooklyn so I'm not a regular but I'm always recognized and don't even need to give my order because he knows exactly what I always order. And I usually get a couple of extra samosa's to take home.

Dosa for $6 or $7 - water $1 - samosa $2 - all with the required chutneys etc - makes for a tasty lunch - although there can be a queue the service is efficient Have it sitting in the park - there are tables - a big plus are the very clean toilets Recommend the park and this cart

We had one of our best meals in New Yory City from this tiny indian food stand. Everything is freshly made, super tasty and prepared with lot´s of love for the product. The owner and cook is a true caracter and well known in NY for the tasty food. Enjoy sitting in the nice washington square park for this great lunch (Note: the owner recommended to be there before 3pm, it´s open longer, but sometimes sold out).

Incredible discovery, really very good The tastes and flavors are there The quality/price ratio is perfect No complaints I recommend

Thiru has wonderful personality. He has a very loyal clientele that keeps him very busy during the day.

We ordered two samosas, one #2 Special Dosa and two drinks. The grand total was $15. The dosa with all of the condiments was crazy good and the samosas where generously filled, fresh and delicious. I wish we had room for more.

We got the Pondicherry Dosa, stuffed with potato masala topped with crunchy vegetables and enjoyed the meal with a big dollop of coconut chutney and a warm cup of sambar on the side. We also got the samosa which was crisp and super tasty. The food was perfect to banish the winter blues. Thiru, who is the owner of the cart is very friendly and responsive. I called him a week before to ask if the cart was open on the Thanksgiving weekend and he was very particular in his responses. He also gave me a t-shirt which has NY DOSA printed on it. Go here if you want to try out some of the best vegetarian street food in New York.

worst dosa I ever had, sambhar was like hot water, masala of dosa was too blend and the crust taste like nothing, If I could zero stars to this dosa, it would be fair review

World famous....That's what my husband said. We ended up in Washington square park and found this cart followed by a long queue of customers waiting to be served. It was, around 12 noon so we,queued up as well. I went around to have a peek and there was this guy Thirukumar making dosas and uttapams for customers. If any customers wanted just samosas they could order from the other side of the cart. The queue was very long. We almost waited an hour andna half for our turn but it was worth it. The Dosa was very nice and samosa were good too. Thirukumar has his own FB page and instagram page. If you like dosa then this is a must.

Step 1 - check the Instagram page. Do not stop, do not pass go, do not do anything else until you’ve made sure he’s actually going to be setup the day you want to go. Step 2 - you’ve confirmed he’ll be there, now cross your fingers and pray that the line won’t be too insane. Step 3 - bring cash unless you want to pay via Venmo. Step 4 - enjoy your dosa and fend off the local pigeons that seemingly crave the absolute deliciousness. Seriously, this place was worth it. I don’t know if I’d wait two hours, but the other people that arrived around the same time as we did on a Saturday afternoon had to order something simply because there was no line and they’d never seen it shorter than an hour. Put in the effort and enjoy some unique street food.

Came and found this man again on my second visit to NY. Gorgeous food, dairy free vegan. Nice to pick up and sit on a bench or the grass and picnic!

Not only is the food outstanding and very reasonably priced, but the man making it is an absolute gem -- he exudes kindness. Although I no longer live in the area, I plan to go to NY Dosas every chance I get both for the food and the friendship.
Best N.Y.Dosas ever
Thiru has been making exceptionally delicious dosas for over 13 years, has won the street food award and has the most sparkling personality I've come across for a long time. You can't get better ingredients for a healthy meal. He made us a special lunch mix not only one, two but three times because we just couldn't get enough. With a great choice of meals, do try the samosas and roti as well!! we simply ran out of time to try everything on his list. It's totally fresh, vegan, vegetarian and a good reason for us to fly across the Atlantik again.
