Worth the waiting in the que for

By DoraMcG |

We came here and we had a 20min wait so we left and went somewhere else but then returned the next day and had a 15min wait but it was well worth it! Very clean, food was amazing. 100% recommend

Big disappointment

By Nomad44879564295 |

This spot in Philadelphia was amazing and I heard the nyc branch was better. Unfortunately I was greatly disappointed. The rice rolls with fried dough was stale and mushy, like it was reheated, the shrimp balls still had the intestinal track of the shrimp in it, aka all the poop. Didn’t notice until the last ball… everything else had minimal flavor. They did end up not charging for the rice roll, but always tried to argue that it was how it should be.

Definitely will come back

By Kenny |

The staff were so nice and attentive. Their business is cash and Amex only so it was great to tell people before seating, because honestly I’m one of those cashless Apple Pay folks now, so that was a plus for them. They didn’t have Crab balls but the shrimp balls we’re a tasty, crispy warm option. The bean curds were soooooo delicious, it’s not cold like other places, the fried it here. The fried bean skin with shrimp as a filling was so delicious, My first curious bite was very hot so I learned my lesson to wait until it cools down. But let me tell you, it was soooo crunchy and rich with flavors.

Gritty, Great Food, Classic NYC

By beth d |

I like the back room alley vibe-it’s a gritty place and I loved it. Yes they only take cash or American Express (bummer but we pooled our money, we laughed and created a memory). The service was friendly and food was delivered quickly. We loved the pork biscuit and the shrimp and pork dumplings were so light. It’s not fancy by any means and I will go back!!

Worth the wait!

By Colleenlr7 |

Worth the wait! Try the ultra-fluffy oversize roasted-pork bun - it’s delicious as well as the almond cookies. Be ready to pay cash or American Express.

Nestled in a small pedestrian street in Chinatown NYC, very kitch and very nice place. We feasted and especially it is not expensive at all compared to other restaurants in NY

If it has been around since 1920 you wanna check it out.

By Joannasable |

Any restaurant that has been in business since 1920 has to be doing something right. This is the perfect spot to grab some great dim sum and warming bowls of soup. Because it is a tea house it has a small but nice selection of teas. The service was efficient but also really friendly. I also really loved some of the old school things like a cash register and old oven that give the place a neat vibe. Please follow @joannasable on instagram for more food and travel fun.

Amazing!

By mustangsallyml |

You have to try the House Special Pork Bun! It was the best I have ever had. The rest of the food was all equally excellent. Go here!!

Top pork buns but v dirty bathrooms

By Travelqueen R |

Amazing food for sure. The Pork buns are absolutely amazing. Asian broccoli and dim sum. Had to drop a point for cleanliness - no soap on bathrooms and possibly the dirtiest bathrooms I’ve ever visited.

Worth the wait in line

By Kasia’s Travel |

With a bunch of dim sum places closed during COVID, this gem continues to thrive. The menu is great and it includes chicken soup dumplings - somewhat rare in NYC restaurants. We had a dim sum newby with us and she loved it. It really is worth the wait!

Amazing Dim Sum

By casallese |

We asked where we could find the best Dim Sum in Chinatown and our concierge sent us to Nom Wah Tea House. You will need your Google Maps to find Doyers Street but it is worth the hunt. By the way, we found out that Doyers Street was once one of the bloodiest streets in the country during the gang wars in Chinatown. No risk of that now. The only wars are restaurant wars! Nom Wah may be renowned for their Dim Sum but you won't find a warm, inviting atmosphere. We were curtly escorted to a table in the window and handed a printed checklist with all the possibilities and we ordered three house specials. The first to arrive was the House Special Roast Pork Bun...an almost luxuriously soft and fluffy bun filled with roasted pork and it was so delicious we broke it into tiny pieces to make them last. Next up came the Shrimp and Snow Pea Leaf Dumplings....thin, luminescent shrimp filled dumplings that, no kidding, are a work of art. Finally, we enjoyed the Shrimp Siu Mai....shrimp, rice and peas rolled and steamed. Wonderful. With no exaggeration, the food here is so beautifully prepared it is almost a shame to eat it. All this and the bill was less than $20 with tip. If you visit Chinatown and you can find it, make a stop at Nim Wah Tea House.

A return to real Chinese food.

By Bermudaman |

We had lunch here and we’re very happy campers. The first thing you must realize is that this restaurant, like most NYC Chinatown restaurants especially in the “post Covid” environment, has not been redecorated since the Ming dynasty. That said, It’s all about the food. We ordered 5 different Dim Sum choices and the problem was deciding which one was our favorite. The restaurant is actually reasonably clean, the servers all spoke good English and were efficient and friendly. We highly recommend this place if you want excellent authentic Chinese food very unlike what you might. E used to in your local strip mall take out place.

Awful - go anywhere else but Nom Wah

By Owen K |

I rarely write reviews, but this place was so bad and overrated I feel compelled to tell others about Nom Wah. The dim sum was cold, flavorless, and some of it not edible. Everything is very cheap, no sauces, and rude service. How do you serve dumplings with no sauce? and when we asked for soy sauce, we were given cheap packets you would get from chinese takeout. I have tried over 30 dim sum spots in nyc, and this was by far the worst. We didn't even finish our meal, it was that bad. I am convinced all their good reviews are fake and written by Nom Wah to help their business. Go to Dim Sum Go-Go around the corner for far more authentic dimsum. If I could give this place 0 stars I would.

Delicous, Authenticator and well-prepared Food

By Line L |

Delicious, authentic, well-prepared food at reasonable prices. There was a long line, but it moved fairly quickly. We were there on a Saturday, and if you're dreaming of a quiet dinner in peaceful surroundings, this is not the place. There's a high level of activity and brightness, and many people.

Classic Dim Sum establishment

By Eli G |

We had very few portions all were very good. Jasmin tea was great We loved the atmosphere and the non presumptuous style. We shall come again - for sure

Queuing system needs improvement!

By Shirley FuYeung |

Most of the customers don‘t mind the long waiting for good food. But seems that they don’t have an efficient system. We waited for nearly one hour, and only after I go inside the restaurant and check, I got my seats right the way. There were still quite some tables available but they just dragged on and let the customers keep waiting outside! The best dim sum, for me as Cantonese, was the chicken feet! Sorry for those who can‘t accept this. Shrimps dumplings’ skin are far too thick! Steamed sticky rice was nice. Blenched kale with oyster sauce really formed a dish of big size but we need to remove those unchewable stems by ourselves! Rough production kitchen!

Excellent

By Jasonvines77 |

If you love experiences and love food then you have to visit Nom Wah, excellent food in classic surroundings this place looks like it hasn't changed in years and why should it.

Plain dirty and dilapidated beyond words.

By Baruch |

Extremely dirty. Not a place you would eat at in a third world country. I don’t understand the ratings. Food was not bad but looking at the dirty apron of the cooks and the 1940s, never renovated, dilapidated and dirty facilities, it’s hard to eat with confidence. Stay away until they commit to clean facilities. How is the city of New York allowing this in our country!!

Where those in the know go for dim sum

By OliwaVasicek |

Summer weekend visit with 6 Asian friends who come here often for their dim sum fix. We were very early in the queue so only had to wait a short while, and sat outside which circumvented further queuing. Dim sum was great and I definitely feel I got to participate in a genuine NY China Town classic activity.

Too Bad

By charles |

I've eaten here occasionally for over 60 years and it has now reached bottom. It was bad in every sense - food, service, ambience. The place looks untouched - which is both good and bad. Good in the sense that it pretty much looks as it had 60 years ago. Bad in the sense that the banquettes desperately need reupholstering. The food, which is after all why we go to restaurants, is worse than mediocre. Nothing was well done. And to add insult to injury, this is the first Chinese restaurant which charges for tea (making believe that giving you a choice of teas justifies charging for ordinary tea served in every other Chinese restaurant in the world. However, the service was indifferent. At least it wasn't really bad to match the food. It's really sad to see such a great New York institution deteriorate so dramatically when it's original owner dies and is taken over by "the younger generation". Too bad they couldn't learn from Russ and Daughters how to pass the torch and even grow while maintaining standards.

Just okay

By Tiffany G |

Service was fast enough, didnt wait too long for a table but the dimsum soup we order was undercooked. The shiu mai was superb and the pork bun was quite cold when it arrived. Glad we tried it once.

Ok, nothing special

By Daniel R |

The menu is mostly dumpling and deep fried dishes. That being said, the food was good and plentiful. They only accept cash or amex

Average dim sum

By Melody G |

Food was okay. Shrimp balls and turnip cake were the best part. Dumplings were tough and roll rice roll was thick and chewy not in a good way. Only Amex and cash accepted. Bathroom better left unseen. Good diner atmosphere though.

Fabulous dim sum for a great value

By Deliasata |

Fabulous dim sum for a great value. I was surprised we did not have to wait in line as long as expected. We had been there before but actually had left because the lines were too long. Outstanding food! We enjoyed not only the dim sum but the steam buns. Highly recommend the jasmine tea

Awesome, for most, at certain times

By Frank T |

Awesome! Except for there being mostly non-Asians eating there. But that's okay. The food was awesome! Well, the wine was just okay. And they only take cash and American Express. And if you want to get in right away, come at an off hour. But otherwise, awesome!

Good and tasty dumplings!

By Ruben S |

Good and tasty dumplings! Good price/quality ratio. Would really go back when visiting new york again.

Old school Dim Sum in newer digs

By Vince K |

My wife and I visited here regularly over 35 years ago. Back then the place was a borderline dump. No ordering. You pointed to what you wanted as trays were brought around. At the end of the meal, the owner counted your empty dishes to determine the check. That has changed. A few years ago the restaurant was upgraded and redecorated, although it still retains a no-frills, funky charm. The staff is top notch, and the dishes seem to fly out of the kitchen. And the food is good as ever. No surprises - just quality Dim Sum at very reasonable prices.

Basic Chinese dishes cash or Amex

By TveViking |

In Chinatown, not the easiest place to find, we had a 4-dish, 55 dollar excl. tips lunch for three persons. Noisy as Chinese often are, authentic, no surprises, taseteful and msg. But definitely worth the money.

Excellent dim sum spot!

By Paulguyinnj |

Excellent food is to be had at this quintessential Chinatown eatery. We had a few minute wait before seating but the wait was worth it. We had a variety of dim sum items that were superb. We had the shrimp and snow pea leaf dumplings, pork sui mai, spare ribs with rice rolls, vegetarian dumplings and spring rolls. The standouts were the shrimp dumplings and spare ribs with rice rolls. Both of them were getting a lot of OMG this so good. The spring rolls were also crisp without being greasy with delicious filling. The pork sui mai was a very good version but I've had better. The vegetarian dumplings were filled with fresh veggies and among the best I've ever had. Service was typical Chinatown which was just friendly enough and efficient, but not overly attentive or overly friendly. The atmosphere was plain but you don't go here for atmosphere. Prices were reasonable and they only take cash and Amex. This is a reliable choice for dim sum in Chinatown.

Excellent Dim Sum in NYC!

By gaynycdad |

I stopped in by myself for lunch and everything was delicious. I have been before and there is always a wait, lunch during the week was no wait, I had six dishes so that I could enjoy leftovers as well’

Without the OG EGG ROLL it's nothing special...

By MIKE G. |

The only reason I even come to Nom Wah is for the OG Egg Roll. Everything else on the menu is typical Chinese Food Dim Sum and can be had anywhere in NYC. The food tastes okay, and it's not hard to create these ancient old recipes from Mainland China. But this is the only Dim Sum Restaurant in all of NYC that makes THE O.G. EGG ROLL, and it's the only reason even to come here. After covid lockdown I think they lost the recipe. The front of the house has a bunch of kids running the Resturant and probably cannot create/cook any of the food on the menu. The back of the house are definitely the makers of this restaurant they are old school classy Chinese Chefs that brought their fine craft to NYC and given us the OG EGG ROLL. Bring back the OG EGG ROLL.

Huge portions, table too small

By ymt888 |

A surprise to find good dim sum in NYC. The settings inside is quaint and old school. We ordered a good selection of shrimp dumpling, noodles, rice flour, glutinous rice, pork meat bun, sesame balls, custard lava bun and fried carrot cake. . The table is really too small for the food served as the portion is large. I enjoyed especially the sesame balls and noodles. Service is not bad too. Go early to avoid the crowd and queue.

Cheap, quick, excellent food

By LS. |

The food is so good and filling, made with fresh and quality ingredients. Service is not especially friendly but quick and efficient. This place is nothing fancy, it's family friendly, loud and lively: a perfect stop in the heart of Chinatown. As a vegetarian, I'm often afraid I won't find anything to eat in dim sum places; Nom Wah highlights veggie options, and although there are not many, they're good. I especially loved the rice rolls (see picture: rice rolls filles with scallions and cilantro, 4 USD).

Great Dim Sum Experience

By Germanky |

Very authentic and very good! I love how the decor has remained relatively unchanged for several decades. My favorites were the shrimp and pea leaf dumplings and the chicken and cabbage dumplings. The rice roll with fried dough was also very good! I would definitely return here if I’m ever in the area again.

Old School Dim Sum

By SHFT54 |

Have you ever had an egg roll? I thought I had too, until I had it here. It gets its name because it's rolled in egg then dipped and fried; they still serve the original version here and it's fascinating. Easily the coolest thing I've seen or learned in at least 3 years. I still prefer the flavor to what I know an egg roll to be, but it was still a culinary education. The rest of the dim sum was good but far from transcendent. But when are you going to eat at a 100-year-old dim sum joint? The highlights were the soups dumplings(better than the overrated Joe's Shanghai) and the pan fried leek dumpling. The salt and pepper pork chop, chicken feet, steamed rice roll and fried taro cake were all mediocre. Still a super cool place, worth the wait and seeking out. Original decor and quick service complete the experience.

Excellent, vintage spot for dim sum.

By Alexander L |

Excellent, vintage spot for dim sum with a lot of history. Suggest getting there when they open to avoid the wait. It is not a big place. Everything we had was excellent.

CASH ONLY (except AMEX)

By missedcherryblossoms |

BEWARE: Everyone in your party MUST BE present to be seated (maybe COVID protocol, and if so, no problem. But, that was NOT clearly posted ANYWHERE). NOT a typical "doing tea" at a tea house as we (Far East Asians) know... Accepts ONLY Amex or Cash. Come on, it's 2021. Food - Average at best. AVOID ordering shrimp dumplings if you want that plump, juicy, yet soft texture with that reasonably elastic skin. The ones we got were not up to our expectations. The skin was too doughy and harder than expected. The way they wrap is pleasing to the eyes (with many, many folds) suitable for show such as Instagram or something, but resulted as thick hard/powdery/almost chalky taste... Service - minimum. As someone already posted, they seem to be interested in getting as many customers in/out fast as possible. We were 3rd in line before opening (at 11AM), and was missing 1 person in our party when the hostess started asking how many in groups. Obviously, we were pushed aside for missing 1 person. Then, we decided to go with who were there already, so we managed to grab her attention and told her we were ALL PRESENT. She told us to wait, and so we did until we started seeing her ushering/seating at least half a dozen parties who were behind us in the waiting line. At that point, we were forced to get her attention again. She seemed to have forgotten about us without acknowledging that. "Okay, if one more show up, no table. Got that?" That's what we were told. Do I recommend this restaurant to others? No. I'm sure there's much better place to do dim sum in NYC. You be the judge.

Great food!

By An0nym0us_12 |

A great location for good authentic food!! Dim Sum excellent! Good prices. Note, only accept cash or American Express!!

More about the history than the food

By Stephen D |

Dim sum joint dating back to the 1920s. The ambience reflects this. In the heart of Chinatown and steeped in NYC history. Unfortunately, the Dim Sum scene in NYC has now far surpassed the offerings at the Parlor. Suitably hectic atmosphere and fun to visit, just not for the food! Lots of better options around.

Used to be better

By Tat_Tatchai |

The last time the dim sum tasted way better. This time around we found the food was mediocre. Not too bad but not memorable. However, the overall service is good and the ambience is nice though.

Good, solid food (don’t understand the hype)

By Enilectric |

Came here mainly because of the reviews (incl. Timeout). Food was good and solid but in no way particularly special. There are better places nearby that serve better dim sum (with shorter waiting time).

A must do

By Anthony J |

An authentic and delicious dining experience at Nom Wah Tea Parlor! The rich flavors and well presented dishes truly delighted our taste buds. We highly recommend this address for a memorable dining experience in New York!”

Oldest dim sum in NY

By LJDowsett_87 |

We had a variety of dishes, this is a lovely dim sum restaurant, the menu you tick what you would like to order! The almond cookie as a desert was really nice. Would recommend.

Awful

By kenknox1 |

A large piece of plastic was baked into our food. The manager apologized, but without really any care, and took $3 off our bill. So that was awful, but the food also is not good. Low quality meat and greasy.

Nostalgic dim sum in Chinatown

By JP |

A historic gem in Chinatown, doesnt look like much from the outside but is quite spacious inside offering a nostalgic 1950s diner-like ambience with delicious dim sum. Their soup dumplings and noodles are highly recommended. The lines can get long but the staff are efficient at seating guests based on party size, making the wait manageable. A must-visit spot for an authentic and cozy dim sum experience!

Rude and subpar - don’t believe the hype!!!

By M M |

Server was extremely RUDE!!! Unbelievable! The nerve!! Demanding higher tip for the rude and barely existent service? Will never go back to this dump, with over-hyped subpar food that any other dimsum place can do better.

Worth the Hype

By Global715655 |

We ordered several different items but the Soup dumplings were the best by far! Also the best spring rolls we have ever had. So glad we tried this on our last day in NYC!

Amazing Dim Sum!

By ludy c |

We had Dim sum at Nom wah during our visit to NY Chinatown, what a great place!! it was recommended in many articles and they were not wrong. Service was fast and friendly,The place is traditional, small dining room and old decor, but the food is what you are there for and it was great. The dim sum was outstanding!!So tasty, the soup dumplings the best, rice rolls, shrimp balls, fried rice, everything was so yummy! This is truly one of the best dim sums I’have tried and will for sure come back in our next visit to NYC!it is a must !

Bit disappointed

By Greta2516 |

Ordered a variety of Dim Sum. Service was fast and staff were very friendly and attentive. However the food was not as good as we had expected. Some of the items were a bit greasy and the veggie dim sum were very bland.

A piece of Chinese history

By Tina R |

Down a little side street, many go to this tea parlour on the recommendation of the Lonely Planet travel guide. It is an old diner and the food is okay. It is quite pricey and there is usually quite a queue to get in. The service was friendly and professional, but the food was just okay. My advice is don’t bother if there is a queue, give some of the other Chinese restaurants a go.

Tiny little China town street-you will find this gem!

By LBHouston11 |

The service is excellent, the choices of food are great. For someone who doesn’t really love Dim Sum, I found plenty of options from soups to vegetables to dumplings—all very good and served steaming hot. NOTE—American Express or cash only

Dirty & not worth the wait

By c.c |

Definetly not worth the wait. Dirty & old restaurant. Usual to below than average food. There was not even a single dish to make me wanna visit this place again. Tasteless to bad food. So many other places to eat and spend your time. Once again, advertisement is not always true and for this one is far by honest. Don’t waste ur time! Not to mention that in year 2021 they don’t accept credit cards and they want only cash!

Was Great In It's Heyday, Now Less Than Great

By bob_ontheroad |

Everything at Nom Wah was good, filling, and plentiful. A pilgrimage to Nom Wah is recommended if you want to check the "Historic 100 year old Chinese Restaurant" box on your NY bucket list (I did!) But I think that many other Chinese restaurants have surpassed this one in quality of food and ambience and innovation. I know, that is unfair, as one goes to Nom Wah for tradition, not trendy. Still, stand in line for the full belly and the box-check, but not for the wow-food factor.

Try somewhere else

By david b |

Charming noisy tea parlor in Chinatown know for it’s dim sum fails to provide much to talk about. Yes it has an authentic HK feel as you walk in, but the food quality and taste are strikingly mediocre. Many dishes were executed poorly and delivered in a random manner. I would recommend one of the many other tea parlors in the area before sending anyone here.

Sunday Dim Sum

By jonathan m |

A great Sunday meal. Came here with our family. We got to the door at 10:10am and there was already a crowd forming. Show up early if you don't want to wait. For this dim sum service you have a pictoral guide and a order sheet. Which is nice since you can order at once. The steam buns were awesome. A great experience indeed. Since you can only provide a general rating you cannot rate other aspects. The cleanliness was okay. Despite that, I would easily go again. In fact, there were request to go again the next day. Bottom line, worth the detour, and good food.

The best dumplings I have experienced

By Mark W |

The restaurant presents as a little old and run down and it is absolutely perfect in its location. The Shrimp and Snow Pea Leaf Dumplings are fantastic...but it is all good!!

Perfect lunch spot in Chinatown

By Romyhermans |

An amazing place to eat! We had to wait in line a little bit, but it was definitely worth it. Lots of choice and the service was quick. Definitely try the Jasmine tea and the house specials!

Average at best

By CCC |

We went after following the reviews and where very excited to try this Dim Sum restaurant, we waited well over an hour for a table so took that as a sure sign it would be excellent but it just did not turn out to be anything special unfortunately. We love Dim Sum and eat it regularly back home in London and although I would not say it was bad I would not say it was great either. It was just really average.

Authentic China cuisine in Chinatown

By chicharito7 |

Were here on our New York trip must say it was incredibly fun here to eat the whole table was filled with delicious little things after our order and everyone was really delicious we went out satisfied again to the busy Chinatown

Loved it!

By cegdoyle1 |

Found this great place on the recommendation of NYC friends. Off an alley way in China Town. It was yummy and fun. Had delicious fluffy pork dumpling, crispy egg rolls and noodles. Want to go back for dim sum! Go for it! They only take cash and possibly American Express.

Great dim sum

By Kev W |

We found this restaurant in a guide book called Eat Like a Local. We went here and had to wait to be called in for our table. At about 9pm this was 30 minutes. It’s a canteen style set up and the waiter comes over to take your order. The food is brought out as it’s ready but overall it’s quite quick. We chose several dim sum dishes as well as some egg fried rice to share. The rice and noodle dishes are generous enough to be a meal in itself for two people. The food quality is good and the service is good too. Would definitely recommend for an inexpensive, informal dinner.

Not what I expected…

By disgustorama |

I tried the one in Philadelphia and was so impressed that upon finding out that the original is in New York City I couldn’t wait to go…. Unfortunately this was disappointing. The star dish was the egg roll; the scallion pancakes were stale and flavorless and the dumplings didn’t compare, except for the shrimp and scallion and the snow peas and shrimp. After waiting thirty minutes outside it took a while to be acknowledged by our server and after that all the food appeared miraculously on the table and it sat there getting cold. while we ate.

It was OK but not more

By fru_sorteravn |

This restaurant was on our list of must-trys in NY and we were glad that we tried it but on reflection, we have had better food in Flushing. Soup dumplings were a disappointment and I had been looking forward to them so much. They were stuck together so when you took one, it split and the soup was wasted, the filling wasn't that nice anyway. Scallion pancakes were nice but have had better. Shanghai noodles were also nice, but have had much better. Dim sum with prawns were good but have had better. Plain rice roll was revolting, slimey and tasteless even with soy sauce. It was all a bit average but have no regrets in trying it. Great thing is the location and it is cheap, cash only, service was efficient.

VERY PLEASANT SURPRISE! NICE ATMOSPHERE..... GOOD FOOD.... STAFF VERY HELPFUL.

By Joseph F |

They have bad booking arrangement. They don't accept bookings over phone nor on internet. So, you have to stand on line if it is busy time. Sometimes they are slow clearing the tables. You tick off what you want on menu page. Beer is $6. They give generous portions.... sliced pork just comes simple..... no sauce...... shrimps deep fried are tasty... food does taste a little over salty... Chinese greens are tasty.. Sticky pork bun is radical taste! Waiters seem tired.... but they probably work very long hours.... I hope they get the tips? But when you do engage with the boy he really wants to help you. You do get the feeling that this restaurant has been around for long time... since 1920.

Nom wah

By Sagive |

Medium food on a good day. The service was excellent but the food was not my preference . Dim sum was medium, plastic utensils. Fit for tourists. Menu available in English.

Not worth the wait and no credit cards accepted

By EzPablo |

Not as good as people believe it is. Service poor (like at most places), they complement you out for "people waiting for a table" which they don't. Cash or Amex payment only, no other cards or Apple pay. Food quality is average, there're better places like Shanghai 21.

Fantastic experience

By solipsia |

This restaurant is in the heart of Chinatown and oozes authenticity. The variety and quality of the food was fantastic. The only factor that can improve is the service, the waiter was unattentive and didn't seem pleased that we were there.

New York Trip

By mikeyboy07 |

this restaurant was recommended to me but unfortunately didn't live up to expectations. Very average quality, not much atmosphere, had the feeling they just wanted to get as many people in and out of the restaurant as quickly as possible. Food very bland, service staff disinterested, disappointing experience, shame as I wanted it to be so much better.

Pretty good

By LostInTime |

I had the soup dumplings. They are small and light and kind of delicate. But they are tasty and enjoyable to eat.

Great noodles and prices

By Marco C |

Great noodles and very affordable prices especially for New York. I recommend it for a break while visiting Chinatown and Little Italy.

Delicious dim sum on charming street

By hudsontj |

Our family had a wonderful dim sum meal here. They offered reservations for dim sum on a Thursday and we were seated immediately. Very clean (including the bathroom). Everything we had was delicious and the service was attentive. Located on beautiful pedestrian street. Inside had a 50s diner vibe. A great way to introduce my family to Chinatown.

Best Dim Sum in NYC

By Sue M |

The entrance to this little restaurant is so unassuming and a little bit shabby, however do not be deceived open the menu to a little bit of Chinese heaven. We walked from Canal Street station after receiving several recommendations. We ordered three dim sums and a pork bun each - everything was fresh, piping hot and delicious. The restaurant only takes cash and American express - so come prepared

Great find in the heart of Chinatown

By Kristine T |

This was a great find in Chinatown. We tried many of the offerings and weren’t disappointed. The soup dumplings were delicious but on the small side. The pork buns had great flavor. The egg rolls were light and amazing. Rice and noodles filled us up. I highly recommend this for families.

Awful, over rated, rude, avoid at all costs

By S66K |

What an awful restaurant, was recommended for Dim sum - tasteless, with chicken gristle dim sum, no apology. staff aloof and rude. If you don’t give them the tip they want, rather than you think they deserve, they try to prevent you from leaving, even if you still left a reasonable tip. Wow just a terrible experience, don’t even consider waiting outside. Over rated- AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

Amazing food!

By shadywade25 |

I'll tell you upfront, depending on the time of day/year you're there, be prepared to wait. When we finally found this place, the line was out the door. The lady gives you a number and tells you 30-45 mins, but it went quicker than that. You may be sat at a community table if it's just a couple of you, so be prepared for that. The service was great, and the food was even better.

Good Dim Sum!

By Bobbie W |

The dim sum was very good here. We especially enjoyed the soup dumplings and shrimp shumai. The Chinese broccoli was delicious, as was most dumplings. The ribs were very disappointing as they were mostly with grizzle and fat.

No wait and great food

By mmatoi |

Granted today is July 4th and the city is empty, but we arrived at 11 (they opened at 10:30), and got a table right away. Service was fast and efficient. Food was amazing. Everything was hot and cooked perfectly. They only take AMEX and cash. There is an ATM down the small street.

Yum

By Kevin |

A fun, warm ambience with lots of happy people slurping and laughing. The food is as great as the authentic tea parlor surroundings. A fun menu to explore and something for all tastes and diets. One of my favorites in Manhattan....

So so disappointing. Really really bad

By Kieran B |

Didn't enjoy this at all. Restaurant was packed but the potential give away was the only Asians there were the waiting staff. Nothing tasted nice. The beef bun had a horrible bun ratio. Like 85% or so. No flavour off the dumpling broth. The dumplings themselves seemed to have a congealed mass of meat that wasn't nice. Vegetarian dumplings tasted so bad, I spat it onto my napkin. I really don't understand what people are tasting when reviewing here. If you can't get the staples of dim sum and dumplings right, you're not not going far. Really really disappointing for our last meal in NY. Shocked at the 5 star reviews here.

Not worth it.

By Milo P |

I wouldn't recommend this restaurant. The food was terrible, the toilets were filthy, and the dim sum was average. The other dishes were inedible and tasteless. It was just gross. Definitely not worth the positive reviews.

Typical

The taxi driver pointed us out that this was a famous restaurant in Chinatown. We tried it and were very satisfied with the food and the service.

Excellent little place

By Tigerstedge |

Excellent and fun little place. Normally a queue but goes quick. We had a good selection and different small plates and enjoyed it all. Good buzz in the place and the staff look after you well.

good food and no ATMs

By massimo m |

We ended up here by chance while wandering around Chinatown late and entered only because we were looking for places with an A displayed, only to then discover them by looking for them to write the review that can be found in all the tourist guides on NY! Top food, we had fried prawns, fried pork, Cantonese rice, sautéed spaghetti and dumplings of various kinds. only thing that left something to be desired were the spring rolls. I don't give 5 stars because having arrived almost at the kitchen closing time, they welcomed us hastily and almost chased us away (on the other hand we didn't queue to enter), and above all, THEY DO NOT ACCEPT CASH, we didn't have any and we were forced to get to the nearest ATM to withdraw.

Worth the wait

By edye515 |

After visiting China, I was looking for excellent Dim Sum and found it here! We waited 45 minutes to get a table for 2 at 2 pm on Friday after the holiday. Once seated and we ordered from the Dim Sum menu, the food arrived quickly. Every dish was fabulous and plentiful. This place is very busy so be prepared to wait.

Dim Sum lunch

By Stephen B |

Based on reviews we stopped in here for Dim Sum. We weren’t the only ones! Had a 40 minute wait or so at 12:30. Worth the wait. Ordering was easy and food came out quick. Lots of choices. Would recommend for sure.

The best buns ever

By Julia V. |

I've eaten asian buns before but only here I understood how they really should taste. Perfection, especially as dessert. The dumplings were great too. Great place to eat!

Excellent Cantonese specialties

By Roberta M |

The best dim sum cuisine in Chinatown and all New York City. The dumplings were delicious. Perfect deep fried shrimps, crunchy delicate and not oily. Prices are cheap, considering the average of downtown restaurants. They do not accept credit cards, except American Express

You know it's good when....

By Brookellen R |

You know the place is good when the Monday before Christmas, at 2:45 in the afternoon, there is a half hour wait for lunch. Really interesting place tucked down a narrow alley in Chinatown. Couldn't have found the place without google maps on my phone. Luckily, the day was warm and people were friendly as we all waited in the ally for our number to come up. Sat in a tiny table in the front window. Lots of interesting choices for both the adventurous and the timid at very reasonable prices. Service was quick. Be aware, they only take cash or American Express, but there is an ATM 1/2 a block away.

Dim Sum heaven!

By Tracy M |

First off, get here before they open and get in line. This is a very popular place and you can expect to have a wait otherwise. Love the location, in small Alley Way, in Chinatown. Perfect setting! Dim sum was delicious. We ordered several different types and it was all great. Service was outstanding. Small place. Loved the hustle and bustle of this place. If I'm back near here, definitely would eat here again. Good for any age. Sticky pork bun is dynamite.

Most authentic place!

By George |

We had dinner there in September 2019. It's only now that I find time for a review ! Food is very good and typical. Go for the decor! Hardly found a place that sticks to its origins like this. As seen in: "Year of the Dragon" by Michael Cimino, starring Mickey Rourke.

forced to tip minimum 15% for lousy service.

By YYY |

Nom wah din-sum Perl is one of the oldest dim-sum restaurants in NYC. It was highly recommended. We visited this restaurant and had terrible experience. The food is mediocre at best compare to other Chinese restaurants in the area. The service is lousy. The restroom is not clean. The worst thing is we were forced to tip minimum 15%. We had a bill total $114. We put $10 tip since it is dim-sum, not a formal meal. We were told minimun15% tip is required. We argued and the waiter ok it. But manager still coming back saying minimum tip is 15% is required. We told them there is no law or rule or regulation that requires 15% tipping anywhere but the manager still insisted. We were in hurry to catch flight and had no time to continue arguing. We also believed the restaurant owner would pocket all tips without giving to waiters. Avoid this restaurant if you do not like bad experience.

Tasty

By Gerbra_10 |

This restaurant is in the heart of NYs China Town. It’s facade is old and worn but adds character. I was surprised by how small the restaurant is when first entering. There is someone who asks how big your party is and then gives you a piece of paper with a hand written number and you are told to wait outside. It was Saturday and 1230 lunch time and already full. There was a party of 5 then us and we waited 5 minutes, which gave time for pictures of the street. Inside the tables a packed tightly and each with condiments already waiting. There were 2 menus and an order sheet. Basically you tick to what you would like to order and then come and take this and ask for drink orders. Tap water is quickly provided after seating. The food comes out when ready so be ready to just tuck in. We went for chicken dumplings, beef bun, veg spring rolls and fried rice between 2. The chicken dumplings were a bit weir with a funny texture inside. I could not place it, maybe just a personal dislike. The beef in the bun was sweet and tasty and just melted away. The staff are efficient and busy and turn tables quickly. The food is obviously fresh but prepared in order to turn tables quickly. The toilets are cosy with the smallest sink I had ever seen and toilet roll being pulled up. A good choice, full of tourists like me but reasonably priced (IMO not comparing to other NY Chinese restaurants).

Sort of like a tourist trap of Dim Sums

By WSS64 |

Not sure why it became a tourist trap but well... the clientele were mostly non- Asian so... The price was high and the food would be around a 7/10. The service was so so. I am pretty sure the locals go elsewhere...

Awesome food but pretty bad service!

By 620rahuls |

I had seen great reviews of this legendary place... So I had lunch here with my daughter on a visit to NYC. I was not disappointed as the food was excellent. We tried a number of different dim sums including beef, vegetables, chicken and pork. I also ordered the Chinese broccoli. The highlight for me were the soup dumplings... Soft and tender and releasing the warm liquid soup when you bite into them! One doesn't go to a place such as this for the service and nor does one expect awesome service. However the service was very bad indeed and demands mention. The place is legendary and so successful that the waiters just don't care. It is difficult to get their attention and they do not are about providing the Soy /chilli sauce etc. If it hadn't been for the service I would have given five stars.

Hidden dumpling gem in Chinatown

By Nicilicious |

Delicious food, many options - Dumplinglovers will be in heaven. Not so much dumplinglovers find their options as well. Definitely try the Sesame Balls, Lotus Buns and steamed Broccoli on Oyster sauce.

Loved it!

By MarieAF |

I have to admit I’m not an avid dim sum eater, so my experience is limited. But I thought this place was delicious. We had to wait about 20 min for a table, but the service is fast and I wasn’t disappointed in my food! Everything we ordered was good and I feel like the prices were appropriate. I’d definitely return agains.

Gastroenterite Restaurant….

By bruno d |

To avoid… very dirty restaurant, total lack of hygiene. Deplorable reception. The toilets are repulsive, the only sink black with grime and this is where the staff normally wash their hands....Obligation to pay in cash, the Tip is automatic and they do not give you change. The food is passable, everything is very fatty...for passing French people to avoid. It is also unacceptable that our backpacker guides and others continue to recommend this address to you. Go on your way and yet we're pretty cool...Bruno and Brigitte

Excellent Dim Sum

By Fletch1946 |

Ten of us had dim sum here yesterday morning. It took about 40 minutes to get seated, but that is a testament to the quality of the food. We had some of everything—chicken feet, shrimp dumplings, soup dumplings, pork stuffed buns and a lot more. The food was uniformly wonderful. No carts where you pick items here. You write down your order on the list provided and they bring the food over the next hour or so. Well worth the wait, and inexpensive to boot.

Never again

By Carlo A |

Seven of us went here following a (printed) guide that called it "the best Chinese restaurant in New York". Regarding the hygienic conditions I will only say that in our country the NAS would have had it closed. Regarding the food, apart from the noodles, which I found good, it is better to draw a veil of compassion. The pork, to name just one, tasted like fish... Definitely time and money badly spent.

No idea why this place gets good reviews

By Deb W |

We had a very below average experience. To start, we were the 3rd party in line to be seated. We wanted 10-15 minutes before anyone even came out to acknowledge us. Then we saw many, many parties exit before they finally seated us. You order food like you order sushi-on a paper-that was the best part of the experience. The food came out quickly. The quality was very poor. Everything was just a sticky blob of undistinguishable flavors. The steamed buns with bean paste were the only item well prepared. The servers were very rude and unhelpful. So many people told us to go and spend money in Chinatown due to the suffering experienced during the pandemic. It's a shame we chose this place because they could of cared less that we were there.

Great timing, Fast service

By sdf66 |

I stayed at an Airbnb just around the corner and this place was highly recommended. I walked in and requested a table for one and was immediately seated. I ordered steamed dumplings with shrimp and a pork bun. Both were delicious and my timing was perfect because before I finished there was a 20 minute wait.

Excellent restaurant, simple but efficient

By ihanta R |

Very good typical restaurant! Very good food and cheap for New York. Authentic decoration in its juice. Very easy to reach and close to the chinatown market.

Disappointed!

By CloCro |

This place was one of our MUST TRY restaurants in NYC! But we were disappointed. We came first thing in the morning and there was no line, and we ordered some things others recommended. Egg rolls were super super greasy. Chicken dumplings tasted like seafood- honestly everything had a fishy taste to it even when it wasn’t seafood! Sticky rice okay. We didn’t really enjoy anything but the tea. Wish I could say something better but I would recommend skipping this place!

Nom Wah Tea Parlor

By GoVols79 |

While walking around Chinatown we were looking for an authentic place for lunch and chose Nom Wah Tea Parlor. We went closer to 11 am and were seated immediately. It certainly got more crowded as it got closer to noon. We were not as familiar with this type of restaurant and it no doubt showed. Apparently the table fills out one of the menus that is found when you sit down. We grabbed another one since we had two separate couples but the server didn’t like that and made us fill out only one. I don’t typically drink tea but for the experience we got a pot for the table. We ordered 2 items per couple and the food came out pretty quickly. I ate with the chopsticks and probably looked like a ridiculous tourist doing so but I made it work. They only take cash and American Express which is an odd combination so be prepared. Overall it wasn’t my favorite food and the service wasn’t particularly friendly but we enjoyed the experience.

Shop front representative of inside and standard of food

By gentel |

Stopped here for lunch as I had heard good things. limited menu cash or American Express only Mediocre food. Slow and inattentive service.

Authentic Dim Sum Restaurant

By shaminajoy |

This dim sum place was really great! The pork buns were delicious and the other options we chose were really good, too. I like that this place has an ungentrified feeling to it-it feels authentic and is the oldest dim sum place in Chinatown. Definitely had more of a family diner feel to it, and that made it feel more authentic. Prices were very reasonable-would highly recommend if you’re looking for a good dim sum restaurant.

Disappointing visit

By Jennifer B |

Recommended by family as place to visit. Sadly it was a disappointment. The food was good but service was poor and unwelcoming. Toilet is a disgrace and doesn't seem to have been cleaned since it opened. Chased out the door for the tip, which was not deserved.

Very good dim sum

By Stefanie H |

We really enjoyed this small restaurant on Doyers Street. The soup dumplings are excellent! There tends to be a line, so go early or late; otherwise, you need to go in and get a number for a table. The dim sum is not the cart system, but the kind where you check off what you want on a piece of paper. Fair warning that the bathrooms are pretty grimy.

Delish

By Joe R |

Solid dim sum. Best siu mai and soup dumplings we have had. Other items were pretty good. A bit of a “diner” setting but not uncomfortable. Staff is attentive.

Good food. No carts.

By greconj |

Went for dim sum on a Sunday. Waited about 30 minutes in line but it’s in a relatively shady area in the heart of Chinatown so the wait was pleasant. I didn’t realize that this isn’t the sort of place that comes around with carts. Instead you order from a menu and they bring out your plates as they are ready. The restaurant is small and the food was very good. On the plus side, you know what you are ordering because there are descriptions on the menu. On the negative side, I kind of enjoy the chaos and challenge of those gigantic dim sum places with the carts. I would definitely eat here again just with different expectations.

Engineer

By Dmitry |

I waited for the food 30 min, payed for a part and went. A lot of people. 40 min waited to get in. Horrable

Disappointing

By Suzanne C |

Should have read reviews and done more research. I have no idea why this place is so popular. I ordered the vegetarian dumplings and the salt and pepper shrimp. Neither was very good. The shrimp was fried with the shell on. I peeled the crunchy coating and shells off and just ate the shrimp. The dumplings had no flavor and was served without any sauce. You can find much better Chinese food in NYC.

Fantastic Dim Sum

By Si1892 |

Don’t be put off the the exterior (or the interior!). This place is not flashy but the food is fantastic. Expect to wait for a little while outside for a table but once sat down you get food very swiftly. There are about 40 dishes with descriptions and photos, tick the menu to select and they are brought out dish by dish. Food is very good and so cheap. Noodles for $12 which is shareable and dim sum dishes (spring rolls etc) for around $5 each. Well worth a visit. Cash or AMEX only.

I don't recommend-there are better places nearby

By Arty_mom |

This may be the oldest dim sum in NYC, but we weren't impressed. The food was suburban all-you-can eat China buffet grade. If you have never had dim sum before, you may like it. We were disappointed from the ho him sesame balls to the very dry and hard scallion pancakes, and the soup dumplings tasted like something I might get in the frozen section at the grocery store. Looks cute from the outside, but I would pass because there are many other places in that area to eat. And the sign says you can only have 30 minutes at a table so eat quick and get out!

GREAT food

By fromAtl |

My daughter and I tried to eat here on a Sunday, but there was a 40-minute wait at 1:30!! We went to another Chinatown restaurant, but we should have waited because where we went was not good. I returned alone to Nom Wah the next day, and I had a very short wait before being seated. I had an iced tea with hydrangea that was delicious, and the food was divine! I started with their classic dumpling soup along with spring rolls. Then I had the shrimp fried rice. Since I was eating alone, I could only order a couple of items. I wanted more, but it would have been too much food. I ended up taking most of the rice home, but all of the food was so so so good. I see why they have a long wait on weekends!

Pick up another place!

By Silvia0578 |

If I have to be honest, this place its not worth. Location is in the hearth of chinatown but inside its a mess and doesnt look so clean. I attach the picture of the bathroom. Infact the sanitari inspection grade is B. Food by the Way is good but since all of them are very unpolite and rude and make the client feel so uncomforable that I think the food doesnt count enough considering the experience. Last year there was a very big lane waiting to be seated. This year, same time of the year and same lunch time no Line and many seats available inside. My final comment: There are many other better place in chinatown.

Go for the history, not the food

By R W |

Worth a visit for the ambience and the history but not for the food. The toilets are indescribable and the place is grimy and beyond careworn. Staff were ok. The food was pretty poor all round. Scallion pancakes - overcooked crispy dough. Steamed buns, fried wonton passable. Sticky rice with Chinese sausage looked bad, tasted worse. Enormous portions of greens saved the day.

Amazing!

By Mary W |

Don’t miss this small place to eat noodles, dumplings, and all around amazing food. So reasonably priced that you might overdo the ordering but then will stuff yourself because it is that good! They don’t take reservations so be prepared for a wait - but it is worth it so don’t get discouraged! The restaurant is located on a great side street in Chinatown.

Quintessential Dim Sum

By amanda_n_byrum |

Excellent dim sum, quick service with no frills. Short wait out front for a seat, but they turnover tables so quickly. Each dish was excellent, but service is the bare minimum. Took forever to get someone’s attention for chili oil, and forget about an extra napkin or getting another beer. Definite worth the wait to experience this NY gem at least once.

Very touristy, ok food though

By Jace D |

The food is alright, short menu, quick service. I don't understand the lines for this place because it's not AMAZING - actually, we saw ZERO Chinese people eating in the restaurant because it's literally only tourists. I've had much better Dim Sum elsewhere, but I guess this has the novelty factor....come but don't expect the food to change your life.

Horrible!

By Marta G |

The wait was 30 minutes. We were a party of four and once seated, we were told that payment only could be with AMEX or cash! What if we only had had VISA??? We ordered on paper, like a cheap restaurant. Food came quickly but it was horrible. Everything tasted the same, the dumplings were mushy and tasteless. The only good thing the wine. The service is non existent and the. At bathroom hasn’t been cleaned since they opened. Horrible!

Worth seeking out on this winding lane - great dumplings and buns

By Beth Moore |

After many months of tinkering around Chinatown, I heard of this place through a friend and decided to check it out. Great atmosphere with an old school vibe. Wonderful food. The pork buns are humongous! Worth getting off the beaten path of Mott Street!

Very disappointed

By frmartinsen |

I used to love this restaurant. I've been here 13 times Google tells me. Today I qued for 30 minutes to get in, and after I had decided what to order they tell me they only take American Express or cash. All other restaurants and shops have taken my Visa card. As a tourist I do not want to use cash. I told the waiter how disappointed I was and left. I Will not again reccomend this restaurant to my friends visiting New York.

Simple dim sum

By Lee |

The bbq pork bun and beancurd rolls were yummy. Dim sum here is simple but satisfies. Service was also friendly. We appreciated that they helped to assure us of a table for outdoor dining.

Go for it! It's awesome!

By maud P |

I looooove it! The queue to enter this Dim Sum temple should not scare you. This restaurant is simply delicious. Authentic and tasty cuisine: fantastic salt and pepper shrimp, chicken feet to die for…! I recommend

Second time still amazing

By Clement_H1234 |

I visited this place last year and fell in love with their Dim Sum. I return this year and still found it amazing. It’s tasty, inexpensive and super quick. Just know that it is cash or Amex only. So come prepared.

Delicious Dim Sum, Great Prices

By Greg P |

There were a decent number of people in front of us but the wait wasn't that long. Super good Dim Sum and it was cool knowing it's been around for literally 100 years. The street is closed off to traffic and they have tables and chairs outside to wait which we took advantage of. The food was delicious and not that expensive, especially for NYC. Totally recommend.

Highly recommend

By katherine b |

We had a wonderful experience. We got there around 11am. The staff was kind and accommodating to our large group. The dim sum was delicious.

Vomit

By Manuel |

One of the worst experience I ever had in my life. The mest of the dim sum tasted like out of date… I had stomach ache for two days. The bathroom was awkward and the service was absolutly bad. Please do not came to this place

Worst restaurant of our lives

By Asmaa K |

Lack of hygiene, the air conditioning tasted on us, horrible atmosphere, tasteless food, tourist trap, there are no premises, questionable appearance of the meat of the dumplings, tasteless soup, scallion pancakes hard and full of oil, 0 flavor, bad service… In short, a tourist factory recommended by guides but really TO AVOID, even the disgusting iced tea, the kitchens are scary

Delicious Chinatown lunch

By Lise B |

We luckily showed up before the restaurant opened, so we were seated first. Within 15 minutes the place was packed! I grew up going to SF and Oakland Chinatown in California, and this was reminiscent of those restaurants - shrimp sumei, soup dumplings, pork baos, and egg rolls. The waitress tried to warn us we were ordering too much but we proceeded, and yep, we ordered too much! Very affordable and the kind of dim sum atmosphere (alas without carts) that I love.

Lunch

By drzvoov |

Truly authentic place! Plainly looking and not fancy at all, just great food. Wonderful dumplings and steamed buns. Great value for money.

Freaking Delish Sim Sum

By T2Socks |

Chinatown has some delicious dim sum, but this is the place to go. It is the oldest dim sum restaurant, the busiest and the best. We walked over from the subway station through the neighborhood and it was busy and full of street vendors. When we turned onto Doyers Street, there were people waiting around to get into the restaurant. Just walk up to the door and put your name in for a numbers. We were told it would be 1/2 hour so we walked around the block to check things out. There are tons of restaurants and hair salons which are busy and cheap. Next time I go, I will be getting a haircut for sure! But I digress. So, our 1/2 wait was 1/2 hour. This is one of the few lines in NY that we chose to wait in because I heard the food was fantastic. This restaurant is busy, cramped and DELICIOUS! Keep in mind that you just may be sharing a long table with other diners. It is equally full of locals and tourists. Beware of the rice dish, it is enough for 6-8 people. The pork buns were huge! They will get you a fork it you require. We had five different types of dished and they were all wonderful. This place does not walk around with a cart, but instead you fill out a preprinted list of what you want. This is great because it leaves no room for interpretation or ordering error. The food came out quickly and they came by regularly to check to make sure everything you needed was cared for. They accept Amex and Cash. Good thing we had enough cash so we didn’t have to go looking for an ATM, but I think there was one outside within the block. Another downside is the bathroom. One for the ladies and one for the men. The line goes out into the restaurant which is already cramped. They also don’t pay any attention to them so they are not very clean. If you need to go, do it after your meal. If I lived in NYC, I would be taking the subway here for a weekly outing. If you like dim sum this is a MUST DO and my suggestion is to take the time to have a wonderful meal.

Be sure to visit this gem on your next trip to NYC!

By Global715655 |

Best meal we had during our trip to NYC. Lots of variety and the prices were very reasonable. It’s a must do for us next time.

I will never, ever, return!!!

By Leonel R |

The worst experience I have ever had in a restaurant. Unfriendly staff, the food was nothing special, with poor hygiene conditions. In the end we were coerced by the employee into paying a high bonus or otherwise told us we would have problems.

Lunch

By minnesota2015 |

Menu was confusing, sat there while waiters just walked by. Finally had to stop someone to see how we ordered. When I was getting out of the booth to leave the waiter had been looking over my shoulder to see what I was tipping. He put his hand out so I couldn’t get out of the booth and pointed at the receipt indicating I didn’t tip enough. I had left a 12% tip because the service wasn’t that great. I had looked up where to eat in Chinatown off of Trip Advisor that is why we ate here. The food was good but nothing overly special.

Crazy place with great food

By Wochner |

After app 30 min waiting we got seated. The place is very old and the atmosphere is chaotic. But all of it is fun to watch. We had different dim sum's that were perfectly made. I give 5 stars for atmosphere and 4 stars for food.

Fantastic dim sum

By arjlawfirm |

Fresh, tasty and authentic, always a favorite!! I love their steamed dumplings and my husband thinks the OG egg roll is the best he’s ever had. Went in the middle of the afternoon, so no wait. Great dim sum lunch!

Dim Sum Very Good and Served All Day

By John C |

We went here for Dim Sum and enjoyed it very much.. The shrimp sui mai was excellent and the soup dumplings are also excellent. There was a long line but it moved very fast. We will be back.

Filthy…

By Edouard G |

The very low end of Chinese gastronomy. It's just bad. No flavor. It feels like you're eating rice paste... Fried rice that smells burnt (or rather like oil that hasn't changed for several months). A tourist trap, nothing more. Absolutely no Chinese in the room (apart from the staff...). I was fooled by the good comments... Deplorable hygiene. The sauces are put in tubes directly on the table. It sticks to your fingers. Expedited and on-line service. No kindness. Don't waste your time queuing here.. any other restaurant will be better.

Dinner out with family

By Maria Irene P |

Always a great meal at this classic place. We ordered roast pork bun, scallion pancakes, shrimp rice rolls, and steamed spare ribs and some white rice. All delicious, with attentive service. The bill was kind of on the high side but still ok.

Obviously we didn't order their best dishes

By Margie S |

There was a line out the door for this place. My husband and I have had the experience of eating the most incredible dim sum in Little Saigon in Southern California. This restaurant in NYC just lacked the favoring we are used to, so we are just spoiled. That continuous line out the door confirmed this. Had we known what to order, we might have felt differently.

DELICIOUS!!!

By SulaGreen |

My girls stop by NYC every year for a few days on their way home so this year they wanted to share this experience. We order so many things and the 5 of us shared them...ate them all. 1.) Shrimp Stuffed Eggplant (this was good and filling. we got 2 orders and there were 3 per order so someone had to sacrifice and eat the last one because we were all so stuffed...My husband made the sacrifice. 2.) Soup Dumplings (We had 3 orders of them...soooooo good, as many as there were we inhaled them. A dumpling that is stuffed with soup (broth) and pork) 3.) Pork Bun (We order 2, maybe the size of a fist and they were gone in a nano second...I think this was my favorite) 4.) Shrimp Dumplings (we had one order, these also were delicious...that great old time Shrimp taste instead of the farmed shrimp today that are pretty much tasteless with a crunch) 5.) Vegetarian Dumplings (we had 2 orders. This was my least favorite but it was still good. I can't put my finger on what I didn't like besides the consistancy was a bit odd. Like raw or something. Anyway...we suffered and ate them all. LOL Three of us had Jasmine Green tea, very yummy. You need to ask for sugar, it isn't on the table and not offered but they have it. The other 2 had a Brooklyn IPA which has nothing to do with this place but is local.

Never realized there's a place like this

By snoopy N Y |

Came here for the 2nd time actually because of the variety of dimsum they have in Chinatown as it claims to be the first dimsum tea parlor in the area years ago. There's always a wait which took almost an hour the first time for dinner but for this 2nd visit for lunch it was not even 5 minutes we got a table for 3. Service was quick with drinks, hoping they can serve hot tea for free. If looking for this place, you should really take that walk inside pell street (where that pegasus is seen hanging between the street lights) and make a turn at doyle street.

Incredible Dim Sum !!!!

By Lance T |

We decided to head down to Chinatown to try a dim sum brunch for the first time not really even knowing what it is. So now we are officially hooked. Sunday is apparently a day for everyone in Chinatown to head out into the streets, and a bunch of them were standing in the street with us waiting up to an hour for our name to be called at Nom Wah. We got in after about 50 minutes, and it was worth every bit of the wait. Three of us shared ten different items, and every one of them was stellar. The pork roast bun and beef rice noodles were the stars along with the pan fried pork dumplings and pan fried chicken dumplings. This place is supposedly the oldest dim sum restaurant in Chinatown, and the atmosphere reflects a place that has been around a long time but with good care taken of it. Strong recommendation.

Best Asian Food in Chinatown

By Edwin G |

Love the warming atmosphere, very friendly place and great food!!!as you walk through the streets you can experience the feeling that you are walking in China. I HOPE TO COME BACK SOON!THANK YOU ALL THE STAFF FOR HAVING ME, AND FOR SERVING ME LIKE A KING. I AM VERY HONORED. Edwin Garcia.

Satisfying, Leveled-Up Comfort Food in Chinatown

By Burnettmed |

As Midwesterners visiting New York, we thoroughly enjoyed this restaurant. We are not dim sum experts and ordered a number of different meats and preparations. The chef’s specials and anything with beef were the best. The only thing we were underwhelmed with was the pork, which needed more seasoning. Nevertheless we had a blast at this long-lived restaurant and topped it off with some lovely foot massages a few doors down. A great way to get the Chinatown experience! Unlike other recent reviewers, we found the service polite and attentive. I think they pay attention to these reviews!

Been eating here for 40-50 years

By Siam-Orchids |

Been eating here since I was much younger, at least 30 years, maybe 40. They served Dim Sum before any other Chinese Restaurant in New York's Chinatown. It was a treat, brought back old memories and the food was good too. Stuffed Eggplant was a 10, Rice rolls with spare ribs - 10 +. Don't miss this place if you're in Chinatown!

Great dim sum and experience in Chinatown

By jennymacfuq |

We visited friends who were local while we were in town and they recommended this place. We try to visit Chinatowns when we travel and love dim sum. This place was great. Good and fast service and great value. The 30+ minute wait on a Saturday was worth it.

What’s around Heart of Chinatown

By Olmo75 |

A Chinese restaurant, in the most iconic Chinatown in the world, in the most particular street of the most iconic Chinatown in the world! Obviously expectations were high for this place that has a century of history and was the first in all of New York to offer practically an exclusively dumpling menu. Well, the place inside has an atmosphere that I would generously call authentic, it could actually use a big refresh. The range of dumplings, on which we have focused mainly, is varied and fairly assorted. I have to be honest, in Milan both in assortment and quality is much better, but we were all in all satisfied. We took dumplings of pork, chicken, shrimp, fried, steamed, stuffed with broth... in short, various types and the best dish turned out to be the pork bao!

What a terrible experience

We went to this place after following trip advisor recommendation. The all experience was horrific. Waiters pushing you to swallow microwave badly warmed food…never go there

Don't Understand the Hype

A friend of mine really likes this place and suggested we go there. The menu looked authentic. However, the customers were mostly non-Chinese, which was a bad sign. Atmosphere was good. The food was OK and the service was OK (slightly better than typical Chinatown service). Dim sum dishes were OK but fried rice was pretty bad. So, I definitely would not go back again for the food. AMEX or cash only.

DONT MISS THIS GEM!

The food here is amazing! super fresh and authentic tasting , definitely will be visiting here every visit to New York city. Best spring rolls and dumpings ive ever had!

Nothing dim here and give me sum!

NO way was I coming to NY without sampling dim sum and was not disappointed! Food was blinding - we visited at lunchtime and the staff were friendly & efficient. Got a table straightaway and loads of locals attending as well (always a good sign).

Good

Overhyped. It was definitely good. But I expected to be blown away. The service left much to be desired. They definitely want to rush you and turn the tables. Better places in the area.

Fun Time with Nephew

Had an excellent meal. Waited about 20 minutes for table on a Sunday night. Place was very warm inside (temp outside was 98) as the A/C's could not stand up to heat but we still had a fun time. Recommend the dumplings steamed and fried. Noodles are good also. Spring rolls ok but about same as you get anywhere so would stay away from those. The packed in atmosphere leads to the fun at the place. Worth the visit.

Delicious

This was my second visit here - first with my girlfriend - and the experience was wonderful. We got there right after 11:00, when they opened, and were seated immediately. We made our selections (no carts or trays in this place - you make your choices on a printed out sheet) and began enjoying our selections within a reasonable amount of time. The cilantro and scallion rice roll was a revelation in both its simplicity of ingredients and its delicious flavor. My girlfriend loved their fried sesame balls with lotus paste. Service was excellent. We'd definitely return - no complaints about this place.

Superb dim sum

We are avid dim sum eaters and this is one of the best I have ever had. And for NYC a real bargain. There was a 20 minute wait for brunch but we wandered China Town and were seated exactly at the time stated. A must visit.

Good fast dumplings

By kdssu |

Nestled away in side alley in Chinatown. Quite busy, noted some customers had to wait 5-10 minutes before being seated. Good selection of food - dumplings, noodle and rice options, and tea at reasonable pricing. Please note - Nom Wah only accepts cash or Amex.

Very rude service and poor dim sum quality

By xiaoqing o |

This restaurant used to be one of our favorite dim sum places in Manhattan Chinatown. However, my recent experience was so disappointing. When I was having dim sum brunch with a friend, we were interrupted by one staff and we were asked to pay off the bill and leave while we were still eating. It was so rude that I was shocked as I have never had such a terrible experience in this restaurant before. I believe the restaurant owner has been changed since the COVID. Both the dim sum quality and service quality are dramatically reduced. My sincere advice is "do not try this restaurant" even though you are advised as the oldest dim sum restaurant in chinatown, and it is a trap!!!

Not worth the wait

Me and my wife waited for over one hour on a sat morning for the dim sum in this first tea parlor in China Town. Unfortunately, our high expectations were met with only higher than average food quality! The best are chicken feet, kale with oyster sauce and sticky rice! The price was reasonable and the service was efficient! But, there are certainly better quality dim sums in China Town, nyc!

The paradise of chopsticks

Hidden in the narrow streets of Canal st, this old lounge gives you a well-seasoned meal. From roast pork buns to dumplings, fried noodles or miced beef soup. And at a cheap price, of course. That's why it's always full.

Good Dim Sum

the Dim Sum was pretty good, the prices were ok, but its New York so you expect it to be a bit high and they did not dissapoint.

Nice in Chinatown

In this alley where hair salons abound, a good old Chinese diner opened in 1920. Although everything has been cleaned, the room retains a beautiful vintage air, with its Formica tables, its imitation leather benches and its black photos. and white on the walls. People flock there from all over New York for the "dim sum", served according to the rules of the art and washed down with a steaming pot of tea! Also good "chef's specials" and homemade desserts. Blinded in the evenings and on weekends, so come early!

Great

It's been open for so long, certainly because it maintains the quality of the food and a fair price. It's worth the experience. Makes you want to try all the dishes.
