Grandma Dora’s pasta is the Best!

By Stacey P |

This place is absolutely fantastic! Food was delicious. Atmosphere was busy, but cozy. And service was excellent, friendly, and helpful. My lasagna and tiramisu were delicious. There is not a noticeable sign outside, so I was a little hesitant walking inside, but our party of 4 was very nicely surprised by our experience. I love the history on the Italian Grandma Dora, who has been making the pasta for around 70 years. Two people in our party, live in midtown and said they would definitely be back!

outstanding Italian food here

By Ron T |

Had a wonderful late dinner with my daughter here on a Monday night (she had been here before, first time for me). We each chose the two course special: she had a salad and a pasta dish that I do not remember what it was called, and I had the meatballs for an appetizer and the Tonnarelli with scallops, cherry tomato, in a lobster reduction. Service was great. This was some of the best Italian food I have eaten in the USA (and I have been to Italy on multiple occasions).

Fantastic Restaurant!!!

We went here with friends who raved about it. Even with that we weren’t prepared for how incredibly great the food was! And an excellent wine list, too. My wife and I had the spaghetti & meatballs, which, honestly, was the best I have ever had anywhere. When you have the opportunity make sure eat here. You will not be disappointed!

Wouldn't run back

Definitely would not rush back. Very cozy atmosphere and friendly waiter, but the pasta was underwhelming. It was slightly dry and I have had better. Also, the hostess was particularly gruff when kicking us out of our table because our hour and a half reservation time was up.

Go for the pasta tastings!

We came here for their handmade pasta and were not disappointed! Vegetarians have a lot more options that vegans (though there is a vegan option on the menu!). The vegetarian pasta tasting was heaven and they have a good selection of wine by the glass. I'll be dreaming about that ravioli for a long time!

Yes to homemade Pasta without going to Italy

Not sure why it says the restaurant is closed when it ain’t. This review was for Sept 2023. My first try verdict is in. The lovely: Arrived earlier than reserved appt time and was seated at Nonna Dora’s favorite table! Not giving away which one 😅. We decided to try the Appetizer and Entree of the day, and one of reviewers’ favorite dishes. All above was al dente with hand made pasta (🤞made by Nonna herself) as it was lovely. The shaved squash appetizer was tasty with good seasoning. Would have wished there was a pinch of sweetness to the squash. They added sun gold cherry (yellow) tomatoes that was juicy and ripened. I personally preferred to place the appetizer’s roasted red cherry tomatoes and arugula on the bread (served at arrival) than pairing it with the squash appetizer. It’s like making my own French charcuterie 🤓. One of us had the special - ox tail over pasta, where it was perfectly cooked. Although tongue caught some crushed ox tail bones that had to be removed when my tongue had to filter it. More leaning towards the thicker savory stew sauce not creamy style stew sauce. The other entree one of us had was the ravioli with pistachio pesto that was absolutely divine too. Paired our entree with server Francisco’s recommended glass of white wine turned out absolutely perfect. Ended the experience with perfect calzone filled with hazelnut nutella. Just the right crisp and gooey Nutella. One of us loved the mascapone of their Tiramisu while the other one thought it was too soggy and loose, when expected creamier and more dense. Friendly waitstaff Francisco that gave good recommendations. The not so good: the interior decor was not warm nor typical Italian. Reminds me of a diner with modern table/chairs and a hole in the wall bar scene. Bathroom was coldish looking with zero personality, other than the fantastic display of news clippings. Maybe someone needs to take a look at Eataly, Tavern on the Green, Balthazar or Gramercy Tavern. This should not deter you for trying out the tasteful pasta dishes. Will return to try out other offerings in the menu. Totally enjoyed our meal.

Amazing Boar Ragu!

By Kate |

WE went here for lunch as it was the only time I could find a reservation for. We had the buratta w/ sundried tomatoes & arugula salad apps. Both GREAT & we'd get again. The gnochio pesto was ok my husband loved it but I like a more punch to your face pesto flavor. The boar ragu was SOOOOOOOOOO good! The best pasta we've ever had & would get again & again! We had the semifreddo & tiramisu. This will be our new go to place in NYC : )

Great Italian. A must.

What a great find. Recommend by our daughter who works in the city. This relatively small restaurant excelled. Starter of burrata and calamari were very good. All the pasta mains were excellent. Staff were attentive but not overbearing. If you like a Negroni - there are lots to choose from..

Best Pasta in NYC?

By S J |

We celebrated a birthday at Nonna Dora's Pasta Bar yesterday. It might serve the best pasta in New York City. If you were fortunate enough to eat at i Trulli, one of Manhattan's best Italian Trattoria's, you know Dora Marzovilla's pasta. She arrived at i Trulli each morning to prepare the fresh pasta for Nicola Marzovilla's, her son's, wonderful eatery. It was a sad day for regular diners when i Trulli closed. After the closure, Dora, at 85 years old, became an entrepreneur and set up Nonna Dora's, wisely hiring former i Trulli general manager, chefs, and well-trained staff to allow the new restaurant to hit the ground running. She expanded her menu of creative and delicious pastas. Her son Nicola, an experienced vintner and wine importer had a hand in curating an extensive list of fine Italian wines. If you loved Dora's pasta at i Trulli, you have a chance for a second bite at the apple.

Don't Pass Up the Opportunity to Visit Nonna Dora's

An excellent Italian restaurant close to everything in Midtown Manhattan. We were visiting the city for the first time and found a review for Nonna Dora's online. We took a chance at getting a reservation and we did not regret it. It was a wonderful location to celebrate a milestone birthday and anniversary. The food and staff were INCREDIBLE! We were treated like family when they brought us a complimentary Panna Cotta to celebrate the occasion.
