Hard to believe this spot garners so many positive reviews. Decided to try this spot before a Broadway show recently as it is conveniently located and comes highly recommend on TikTok etc. We were so excited to try the full omakase at $100 per person. Upon being seated at the sushi bar we noticed that the chefs were lining up full trays of pre sliced fish in an assembly line fashion without gloves on. All varieties of fish were in a pile without separation. Nothing was made to order. Very misleading and disappointing . Fish was subpar at best, looked nothing like the pictures posted, have had better at La Guardia . Have to wonder -are all the reviews made by paid influencers ?

Luckily it was a warm day and we ended up here in SushiLab. Perfect day to enjoy rooftop bar with drinks and delicious sushi! A bit pricy but hey it's NYC. We love everything we ordered and the staff is amazing. Thank you!

Not only is the place amazing, but the food is also spectacular. The location is curious, since you have to go through hallways of rooms in the hotel where it is located. The place is beautiful and very quiet. Despite being a rooftop, the views are not great because it is not very high, but it still has its charm. Very friendly and attentive service. The price is high, but for a special occasion, it is worth it. Although the prices are per units (pieces), the Specialty Rolls are actually eight. Be careful with this when ordering! The Tokio Mule to accompany is a must. A 100% recommendable place.

Me and my friend where there for dinner. We had the vegan sushiroll, the spicy tuna roll, the avocado fries and the taro chips with pomegranat guacamole. And honestly it was the best meal i had in a while. Every dish was absolutely inredible! The space is decorated so cute and the ambiance was really nice. All the staff were so friendly and accommodating. Could not recommend this place enough

So glad we came across this little gem of a restaurant. The food was really delicious and our server was impeccable (I can’t remember his name, but I think he was in training) - thank you! Lovely atmosphere (roof top garden terrace) with lovely cocktails and wine.

So we were staying at the hotel and didn't make lunch planes, and we like sushi. Went up and got a seat. Didn't know what to expect, so expecting tuna avacdo roll we got uni, and more. Pics included. Wish this was at home. We would have a go to place.

The sashimi quality is excellent. We loved the sushi and rolls. I have eaten there several times and can't wait to go back. Love it!

Sushi Lab Rooftop is kind of a Speakeasy restaurant, as it is a bit hidden away, giving you that “place with the secret access” feeling. It is inside the Sanctuary Hotel, and there is a check in counter to the right of the entrance for Sushi Lab. It is a bit tricky to get to the rooftop, just keep following the signs... You can NOT go all the way up there via elevator, you need to go up the last floor(s) though the staircase. The rooftop is a covered space, so it was nice and warm, and very pretty. Definitely picturesque. No need to worry about bad weather here. We requested counter seats at the time of reservation, so we got to have a nice view of the sushi chefs making all the tasty creations. The sushi chefs were not Japanese, but I guessed that much before we went there… I was there for more of the experience than a real deal, authentic sushi made by sushi chefs with years and years of training. We started with some cocktails, we ordered Lychee Martini and Strawberry Geisha. They were tasty, but very sweet. Much sweeter than expected but also quite strong. For the food, we wanted to do Omakase, and we chose The Lab Experiment. It is a 15 signature course with some of the finest ingredients like truffle, wagyu, and caviar. It is stated “The Lab Experience is a journey for the senses” – which sounds very exciting! Everything we had was really good. Fresh and melt in your mouth. Some creative pieces, and we enjoyed them all. We had a nice, tasty lunch that felt luxurious. The service was really great, friendly and polite. I told them that we were celebrating my hubby’s birthday at the time of reservation, and they gave him a glass of Prosecco on the house! How wonderful is that??? Sushi chef was very nice and polite also. Spoke clearly with each piece, explaining what they were. It was such a fun, relaxing experience.

Amazing! The Omakase is an experience you should not miss. It’s not just great sushi, but the preparation that is amazing - unique toppings paired perfectly with each piece. Such a cool environment on the roof! Secret access to a beautiful garden-like seating area. Such a special experience, I try to go every time I’m in NYC!

Omakase is back at Sushi Lab! The restaurant is located on the 6th floor rooftop. Very easy to navigate to. I recommend going to the bathroom in the lobby vs upstairs as the rooftop one is really cramped. I made reservations way in advance and sat at the chef counter. I ordered the lab experiment for $120 and it gives you 15 signature courses and my 2 friends had the chef's selection of $60 for 10 pieces. I personally loved the hamachi with cured kombu, otoro with caviar, blini with crab on sweet bread, blue tuna with tempura oyster, monk fish liver, and the chutoro. Flavors here are on another level. The pics look great, but the textures, umami and freshness of the fish here are amazing. Looking at what my friends were served yes it looked delicious, but they regretted not going with the lab experiment. Definitely order the chutoro, otoro and anything on the menu that has uni on it you won't be disappointed. Uni has to be my favorite and I swear they served me uni from 3 different regions. The aesthetics here are amazing with the rooftop lighting and faux grass plants along the walls and roof. We also ordered the sake flights and my omakase came with matcha tea which were delicious. With current Covid measures they take it really serious here. Your temperature is checked at the bottom floor and the entire staff is wearing gloves and masks. Seats are 6 feet apart and they have sanitizer every where. They have partitions around the restaurant as well. Food service and timing were perfect. We had a limit of 90 minutes and with all of the food we ate we ran a little over. Highly recommend Sushi lab if you love raw sushi. Looking at other diners I didn't see a single roll. Book in advance and go for the omakase at the chefs counter. I'll definitely be back to try their other menu items including their hand rolls

Sushi Lab Rooftop is located on the top floor of Sanctuary Hotel on 47th St between 6th and 7th Ave. When entering the hotel, you go to the reception desk to check in for your restaurant reservation, and get escorted through the lobby to an elevator that is hard to find if you visit for the first time. The restaurant has great views of the nearby buildings - in summer, it is an open rooftop terrace, in winter it gets converted into a covered restaurant. The style is modern and stylish, most guests were in their 20s or 30s. You order a variety of sushi creations - certainly not your traditional Japanese sushi, but a modern interpretation with different flavors and textures. We found all dishes excellent, and loved the fact that we could simply order more if necessary as there is no specific sequence. We enjoyed the house sake with our food, which was nice and fresh. We found the price level absolutely appropriate. The place gets really busy, so better have a reservation.

Amazing food and vibes. Peter our waiter was very accommodating Couldn’t have picked a better venue and satisfying dinner close to Times Square.

This was such an amazing experience. As a vegetarian I didn’t think it would be possible to ever do an omakase tasting but Omakaseed definitely made that possible. Ambiance: they have a beautiful set up. Every detail has been thought of including the dishware they serve each course in. The restaurant is small and intimate. You are sitting around a half oval table and there are no more than 12 to 14 diners at a time. You get to watch your chef make each of your dishes and they give you a detailed explanation before they serve it to you. Food: Every course got better and better as the night progressed. My favorite was the crispy tofu with stuffing inside. The tofu was perfectly salted and crispy and I loved the flavors inside. Each dish was carefully crafted and all the flavors complemented each other so nicely. It was also textured perfectly. Chef Cam was amazing and you could clearly see the passion he has for the food he makes. He puts a lot of thought into crafting the dishes and told us that they have a new menu every season to match the fresh vegetables available during that time. Service: service was great. They checked in on us often and seated us promptly. Price: considering the full experience and the amount of food, I would say this is a fair price. I highly recommend coming and eating here. It was such a memorable experience. For a list of other awesome veggie/vegan places in the city, feel free to message.

The sushi is delicious, but the crispy tuna and tuna tatare are especially recommended. The staff is friendly and the view is beautiful

It's always an experience stepping back into the lab. The Head Chef Frankie keeps innovating and experimenting with flavor and pushes the boundaries of what would be considered traditional sushi. It all makes for a rather delicious experience. Try the toro tartar. It's phenomenal.

A NEGATIVE EXPERIENCE ON ARRIVAL TAINTED THE EXPERIENCE: On a Sunday arriving at 132 West 47th Street, 30 minutes earlier, with a reservation for 3 people did not make any difference. The doorman showed us to the front booth on the right. We presented the 2 girls our online reservation for Omakassed Vegan Sushi, but they directed us to take the elevator inside the hotel to the 6th floor. On the 6th floor a hotel host entering her room directed us to climb the stairs to the roof on the 8th floor. There 3 rude staff yelled that we were in the wrong place and consequently we would be charged a $25 extra fee per person. One of them (laughing) insisted that we go back down, outside the building, on the right where we would find stairs heading to a basement. We immediately climbed down the stairs from the 8th to the 6th floors to take the elevator down to the lobby. We left the building and turned right to find a wooden gate enclosing stairs to a basement decorated with stickers and grafitti. One door read "Employees only: this is not a restaurant." The other door covered with graffiti and stickers was locked and nobody would answer the door. We decided to wait at the street level under scorching heat while I texted the text-only-number on "Omakassed Vegan Sushi by Bou" webpage and wrote them that we were waiting outside in the street. A staff finally opened the locked basement door and said the we were in the wrong location and that we must enter the hotel and head to the last door at the end of the main hallway. Two of us arrived in the correct restaurant (finally!) 5 minutes before the reservation scheduled time. They sat me in a corner, and I was NOT served all 11 courses that I paid for as the non-vegan chef decided to serve me only 8 out of 11. I also ordered a non-alcoholic drink. I regret including a generous tip....

The rooftop beauty cought my eye and that's why I decided to go but despite the slow service I loved the quality and level of the food. No normal roll to be found here only very elevated specialty rolls and it's worth it!

I have been in this restaurant with my family, the location is nice, the food is not bad but the service was terrible. The waiter was careless, forget many things and focused on his smartphone instead of the tables, rejecting also a few easily acceptable requests. For that reason, also if not nice, I decided to not give a tip for the service and the waiter (without asking) before the input of my pin's card CHANGED THE TIP TO 25%!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's not just illegal but also shameless.

Excellent Sushi 30€ menu with a starter and a high quality dish but not enough if you are hungry Nice decoration in rooftop

It was around 9:pm and in NYC, we were looking for a rooftop lounge and it was suggested that we go to Omakaseed. When we got there, we were informed that there was an occupancy limit, so we had to wait as there were others in front of us. We decided to go their inside lounge. Small and quiet, the bartender was non-descriptive. we had 2 rounds of cocktails and asked for the tab. The bartender gave a general tab, $130.00 + tip, no breakdown of what we ordered and when I asked for the breakdown, he told me that they don't do this, a total receipt is all you get. I thought that this was a little unusually as all the other places that we visited did provide a breakdown. Oh well, NYC is always worth it.

Came here for Sunday lunch at the rooftop—had a delicious meal! Loved the decor of the greenery and plants all over. Started off with the Chicken Gyoza, wasn’t a huge fan of the sauce that’s drizzled on it. The Chicken Katsu Sandwich and Washugyu Beef Roll ($21) were good! If you like raw fish, the Omakase: The Lab Experiment, with 15 signature courses for $100 is highly recommended—my fiancé was in heaven and said the fish was fresh and delicious! I tried some of the cooked items (soft-shell crab & eel roll) and they were good! For cocktails, I recommend the Lychee Martini ($16)—super tasty!

Blech. Overpriced, dirty and they overcompensate for their bad sushi w a lot of “aioli” which often just meant a straight drizzle of mayo.

Amazing sushi dishes. excellent service and beautiful atmosphere. Probably the best Lychee martini I've ever had!

Really enjoyed omakase experience at the chief’s counter. Excellent fresh fish and seafood, skillfully prepared. Friendly service with smiles and attention. Loved the shrimp, squid, toro, sea brim, sea bass, sea urchin very much, but fried oyster was the best. Nice use of condiments, citrus, mushrooms. Summer cocktails were refreshing too. Food was superb, giving 4 stars as the booking experience was a little confusing snd while location on the rooftop of a hotel is lovely, had to walk not the most pleasant stairs to get there. Overall highly recommend for couples, groups of friends and everyone who loves Japanese food.

Had an unmatched 13-course omakase experience at The Chemistry Room by Sushi Lab the other day which included smokey miso soup, nigiri pieces, a tuna flight, A5 Wagyu, dessert and matcha green tea. The service was super friendly and the up-close view of the sushi chefs made the dining experience super fun. Also highly recommend their sake and the Shiso Pretty cocktail!

This roof top sushi restaurant was really great. Very friendly staff and the sushi were really fantastic (or better than fantastic)!! We didn't make a dinner reservation but the staff managed to get us seats at the counter, so we could watch the chefs working. The atmosphere was so friendly, and we stayed until they closed. Thank you!! Our waitress even noted we were speaking Swedish, amazing :-)

Beautiful place. The server was fabulous, recommended the matcha roll which was delicious. I had the strawberry geisha that was fresh and not too sweet. Will go again!

Tl;dr fancy omakase experience that won't break the bank. I have been wanting to try Sushi Lab since pre-Covid. I am still not comfortable doing indoor dining so when I found out they had a rooftop, I was looking for the perfect time to try it. And what better time to try it than my wedding day! We had a mini ceremony in the morning, a photo shoot at the Empire State Building in the afternoon, and Sushi Lab was the perfect way to end the day (especially since it was within walking distance). I remembered randomly looking at Resy a few times before for reservations for two people but could never find anything. So I figured I would try my luck by calling, and they had open reservations (so always call)! We chose the 5 pm seating for a Saturday and we got to sit by the sushi bar. First, you get your temperature taken and then you wait for an elevator (with your party only) and go up a set of stairs to the rooftop. The space is beautiful. It looks very modern yet minimalistic. It's a tented rooftop but it's open on the sides. We were one of the first groups to arrive, so we were sat in a cozy corner by the window, away from everyone else. The tables and seats by the bar are socially distanced and they also have a plexiglass between each party. They also give out one-time use paper menus. We felt really safe dining here. For drinks, we did a whiskey flight and a sake mojito. The whiskey was Toki, Hibiki Harmony, and Yamakazi. You definitely want to start from left to right because it gets smokier and more intense by the time you get to the Yamakazi. The mojito was nice and refreshing. I normally don't love cocktails because they're too sweet, but this one was perfect. For food, we decided to splurge and go with the Lab Experiment. It has 15 courses (as opposed to the Chef's selection of 10) and this is what we were served: amberjack, Kumamoto oysters, toro tartare toast, squid and uni with finger lime, arctic char, striped jack, seared toro with beluga caviar, golden eye snapper, fried oyster with tuna/dried roe, uni-corn (crab/uni with popcorn dust), scallop/uni/truffle, wagyu/uni/foie gras, anagori with real nori, tamago, miso soup, and cherry blossom jelly. The highlights were the toro toast, seared toro with beluga caviar, fried oyster, the wagyu/uni/foie gras, scallop/uni/truffle, and anagori (but more because I've never had real nori before, so it was interesting). I had high expectations for the uni-corn but it was just okay. Also, I know you'd normally start the meal with soup, but the miso at the end was just *chef's kiss*, the perfect way to end it and trick your body into thinking it has been cleansed. The duds were probably the golden eye snapper (mine was veiny), the tamago (not a fan in general), and the cherry blossom jelly (reminiscent of a water drop 'cake'). I must warn you that they do love using shiso leaves here, so if you're like me and it's not your thing, make sure you tell them ahead of time (they'll ask you if you're allergic or don't like anything and it was my fault that I forgot to tell them about the shiso). For dessert, we went with the brown sugar boba flan. The boba was a bit hard, and it's not really a flan, but more of soy bean pudding, texture-wise. The flavor was good though - not too sweet. I'll admit that it's not the best sushi I've had (still amazing) but the reason for the 5 stars was the overall experience. I must give a shoutout to the host, Julio and our server, Nicki. Julio had asked if we were celebrating a special occasion (since we were dressed up, and I was wearing white) and we told him that we had just gotten married that day. They both made our experience very special and memorable from beginning to end, and even gave us complimentary champagne/dessert to celebrate. So if you're looking for a place to celebrate anything, or if you want to have a fancy sushi experience at a very reasonable price, Sushi Lab is it. Even if omakase isn't your vibe, they've got a la carte items too. I can't wait to come back and try the specialty rolls.

The ambiance is good and the sushi is great. Everything we tried was excellent. We dined at the counter which is always fun to watch the sushi masters at work.

Lots of reviews saying this is on the roof - when the restaurant Sushi by Bou is actually in the basement. There is a place called Sushi Lab in the Sanctuary hotel on the roof and folks are obviously confused! Sushi by Bou is a very intimate space with only 8 settings for each time slot - you get to book 30 mins, 12 courses (pieces) or 60 mins for 17 courses. I wasn’t sure i had the right place as the entrance is down into a basement down some graffiti ridden stairs (done on purpose) but then you walk into the small room and now you are! You sit around the kitchen area and each chef looks after 4 people, explaining each dish and preparing it with great care before your eyes. Amazing food, lovely friendly team and a great all round experience. Quirky and impressive all in one - totally cool!

Delicious find. Fab roof top restaurant. Well heated and very comfortable. We at the 15 course tasting menu and the food was Amazing! Tried fish and flavour we had never experienced before. It was soooo good. Service exceptional with each course explained well. Lovely sake and wine. Waiters helpful to suggest good drink pairing. Loved it!

This is a hidden gem. We sat at the chef's table and it was amazing to see the attention to detail they put into making each dish. The food itself was very good, and the matcha creme brulee dessert was one of the best things I've eaten for a long time. We were chatting to one of the staff who, on finding out we were on our honeymoon, immediately went away to get us free champagne, typifying the level of service.

Sushi Lab's rooftop was pretty cool. The set up and decor really amped up the venue's vibe. The sushi was awesome and really reflected the restaurant's name -- almost like a lab of trying new things and ingredients. Service from the wait staff, not the sushi chefs, however, left more to be desired with missing and delayed orders.

I went last week and tay at Sanctuary Hotel for a week and had 1 diner at SUSHI LAB and it was very nice and good. I stay at the bar and it was great to see the guys preparing right in front on me. I will be back ..

We went out last Thursday with our friends for an omakase experience in the wonderful place. Located in the heart of the Times Square. There are two restaurants there so dont get confused when entering. Plenty of street (if you lucky) and indoor parking. Seating available by the window or even at chef’s table to watch them cook. All sushi were very unique and tasty. I even ate uni (which i typically dont like).. Drinks were plenty and based on a fact that everyone kept ordering more (i dont drink) - they must have been good. Service was pleasant and not overbearing with “do you want another drink” A la carte menu available if you are not interested in omakase. Prices are very reasonable as compared to similar places in far less busy and popular locations. Check them out.

Creative fun sushi in hotel lobby. I had been wanting to try this place. They were very accommodating when I wanted to do sashimi instead of sushi. Will definitely go back when things reopen.

Amazing omakase experience at Sushi Lab. Set in the Sanctuary Hotel it is a lovely, intimate setting and the food and service were outstanding. We started with cocktails and blue fin toro tartar which were delicious. The omakase then started and the food was amazing, highlights were the scallop with truffle, artic char and tuna with fried oyster. Loved watching the chefs prepare the food and explain each piece as they presented it to you. Would highly recommend and definitely visit when back in NYC again.

We had the lab experiment booked. I guess they had no time left at 8pm so we received a mixture of the lab experiment with just some nigiri from the other menu for 60$ instead of 120$. We are very dissapointed, cause we were so curious, cause of all those good ratings and very lovely pictures.

In a great location near Times Square, this restaurant was recommended by a local. It’s easy to see why. This place serves outstanding sushi. I would suggest that even those who think they don’t like sushi would like the food served here. The sushi bears little resemblance to the mass produced sushi sold in some of those popular chains. It’s simply in a totally different league. Try the Chef’s Selection of 10 different nigiri pieces which was particularly good. There is a good selection of saki too. The service was friendly and attentive. But there aren’t that many tables so reservations are essential. Simply stunning!!

My wife and I have been here a few times now and we both absolutely loved it each time. we have only tried the 13 course experience which is just what they said an experience. 13 pieces artfully prepared from great ingredients with an amazing array of flavors. The staff is warm and friendly. We highly recommend.

Booked a reservation at this restaurant during a visit to the city and had to cancel it. We responsibly called several hours ahead of our reservation and received a cancellation confirmation and indication that there was no problem cancelling it by the hostess. Despite this, the restaurant charged a $150 cancellation fee without notifying us. When we wrote to complain we only got a response by mail saying that it was indicated in the short print in open table that cancellation needed to be done at least 24 hours ahead of time. I am so sorry, but this is what I call terrible service. What is the point of calling a restaurant to let them know you won't make it, get a confirmation that there are no issues with the cancellation and then say that because of the fine print in open table they can still charge the cancellation fee? What they should have done was thank us for calling to cancel (instead of not showing up) and advise that a cancellation fee still applies. This is just terrible customer service...

Just got their chef’s selection 10 piece omakase last night delivered because I missed going there so much. It was everything I needed and more. They’re in business Monday-Friday during this pandemic. Before this all happened, I was an in-person Sushi Lab regular. Every time I’d have a Broadway show in the books, a reservation would be made here. The GM Jeremy is one of the best in the biz and makes everyone feel like a VIP. Seating is limited so scoring a Resy feels like you’ve won the lotto. The fish is so fresh, the innovative pieces are topped with everything from truffle to lemon zest, setting it apart from traditional omakases. If you’re in the mood for top notch sushi, this is your spot.

I had a wonderful sushi roll from here. I was staying at Sanctuary Hotel and was excited to try this sushi restaurant out! I ordered their Matcha Crunch Roll, absolutely delicious and flavorful! The restaurant is beautifully decorated. The staff was very nice and accommodating. No complaints! I enjoyed my time here.

Just short of a 5, but close. Very nice place, well decorated. Service was very good. Prices were somewhat reasonable. Lots of variation and options. Even some options for non- sushi folks. Not a very large place, maybe 10-15 tables. Highly recommended.
Not a rooftop as claimed
This is not a rooftop, 6th floor, absolutely no views. What you get is a very small menu of overpriced rolls and a couple of appetizers (they were out of the ones we actually wanted to order) plus watery cocktails for. $16. We spent over $300 for 3 people and left hungry. Avoid this place.
