My wife and I love down to earth, non fancy burgers! This is a great place for that in a great down to earth venue on 2nd Avenue. We had heard about this place from a friend i Istanbul that had lived in the village for many years and so we decided to give it a try on a warm Saturday afternoon. The service is typical NYC friendly (good but quick and somewhat terse; not a negative though). The waitress let us know that if we didn't see what we wanted on the menu that we could ask for anything and the could/would fix it. My wife ordered the Blue Cheeseburger with extra crispy bacon. She liked it (I took a bite and did too) however, would elect to get a different cheese next time as the blue cheese melts a bit and seems more like a spread than cheese (no fault of the restaurant just the way this cheese is on burgers). I ordered the El Paso Burger with extra crispy bacon (the bacon was not crispy on mine but that was the only mistake of the day). The jalapeños on the burger gave it a wonderful kick. My wife and i loved the burgers and the fries and we will certainly be coming back. Finally, we loved the old fashioned burger joint atmosphere. A near perfect burger from my perspective!

One of the best Burger we ever eaten! Location is really autentic, service is friendly und the beef is excellent! For my next NYC trip this restaurant is booked ;-)

We were staying in an apartment in Brooklyn and the people that stayed before us tell us about the place, that was cheap and the best burgers that they taste in NYC, and the were, delicious burgers, very vintage place, a very nice experience!

In this place where we entered after reading a review in the NT Times we ate a delicious and quality burger. The taste of the meat was amazing and the right size.

This is a really old fashioned diner, with checked tables, open kitchen, mad busy waitress etc. The burgers are massive!!! They are also amazing, but only eat here if you like being full up! I ate one at noon and didn't eat again that day! They are also inexpensive, and the waitress kindly warned us against getting many sides as we wouldn't be able to eat them!! It was great, I would definitely recommend.

So, we were looking for a good burger in NYC. Paul's popped up all over the place, so we gave it a try. Beware, if you want something that is pretty, well lit, and plays classical music - go somewhere else! Think of Paul's like your neighborhood bar that sells kick @ss burgers. Make sure you bring your appetite and cash as they don't do credit cards. If you have to wait for a table, DO IT - you won't be sorry. We'll definitely be back to do it again!

great choices, overall a pretty good burger (although it easily falls apart), but there's better.

It's just a great place. There is plenty food the meat is gorgeous and cooked as you request it. The deluxe provides more than enough for one person and I'm a big guy. I loved it. Just go there!!!!!

Great place, great service , great quality, great atmosphere over all. Now the burgers were something else. The right amount of every ingredient. The meat was on the sweet spot everything was just perfect. Don't expect to have like a romantic dinner, not that kind of place. Expect the best/perfect burger in NYC. And very affordable as well.

I had the cheeseburger, and it was really very good. The meat was amazingly tender and juicy, it was cooked rare, just like I asked, which is not that frequent around New York. Keep to the classic burgers, they're the best ! Only criticism that I could make is that I asked for pickles and they forgot to add them to my burger. The fries were good, not too salty but a little too thick, I prefer them thin and crusty. My slice of tomato was not ripe, so not edible. All in all however, it was not expensive and really delicious.

While in NYC my friend suggested eating in Paul's. Paul's is a little of the beaten path when it comes to NYC sites. It was worth the drive! The restaurant is small and parking can be an issue, but this is in my opinion the best patties in Manhattan. They serve a variety of burgers and sandwiches, as well as, breakfast options. The food is very good, big portions, and well priced. Look I can type a lot of things but the best thing is to get your butt to Pauls Joint and taste awesomeness.

Huge burgers here, freshly cooked and so juicy! It's not in central NYC but worth the trip there for the burgers!

Been to Paul's a few times as it serves good burgers, freshly cooked to your liking in a pleasant, unfussy diner just round the corner from St Mark's Place in East Village. It must be good because members of the NY police and fire service were there too when we visited. And these guys must know where the best burgers can be found. But what's happened to the service? A couple of years ago, waiters had loads of that typical NY attitude. You know, when they're offhand in a way that says 'we don't need no compliments mister, just eat the food'. This time round, they asked whether we were enjoying our meal. My advice - stop all this being nice stuff and bring back the attitude. We like you better that way.

Really nice burgers. Being a burger joint, that's pretty much all there is to say... This was our first burger in NYC, I really wanted my girlfriend to try a real Amrrican burgrr, was not disappointed.

We were looking for a great hamburger while walking through the East Village. Paul's Da Burger popped up on the list right around the corner from St. Mark's Place. From the front, it's unassuming. But inside it's a trip back in time. It's described as a 50's style eatery, but to me it was also a visit to a St. Mark's that hasn't existed in some time-interesting chaos, lots of personalities, no frills but still comfortable. Best of all, the food was terrific (cooked exactly to our specifications) and the price was right. Next time I have out of town guests, we will definitely make this a stop. I'll show them what's left of the real St. Mark's.

Kaiser roll got the two Stars. Place is not real clean and has A from board of health? Hummmm. Requested med-rare burger and it was more well done than my burger requested well done. Burgers not so great on top of it and grilled onions ordered on burger as well barely any at all. I asked the waitress to remove fries and instead replace with small amount of onion rings. Not only did waitress say a thing related to any price difference nor what she did when I got the bill reflecting full cost of side of onion rings. Added to the deluxe meal that came with fries. Waitress left fries off plate period yet charged Disgusting business practice. I couldn’t get her to pay attention because she didn’t care. However, whoever Owns this sub par not clean place needs to reign in their staff . I will never ever come back nor recommend to anyone. So there is their lack of understanding customer retention and word Of Mouth for free positive marketing. Inexcusable on principle period.

Real juicy burger at a very good price. Lots of choices of burgers too! Staff are lovely. Pay by cash or card

This place is located across the street from the Orpheum theater. So glad we were hungry and wanted to stop somewhere close by. Oh goodness, gracious me the burgers and fries made our hearts and stomachs happy! I'm sorry I forgot the ladies name who served us (she's been there 25 yrs) was so nice and on her job! We will go back for sure.

A trip to old New York, it's a pitty that not too much of such places are left. And apart from all those fashioned steakhouses and craft burger bars - this place serve real burgers with almost 20 kinds on the menu, and prices for 8-11 $. No doubt, for a New York burger - we cam here!

Awesome burger joint on 1st Ave in East Village. Perfectly cooked burger with great flavor. Fries with gravy were excellent and reminded me of ones I used to eat at diner in high school. Owner was super friendly and nice. Ate there twice during our 8 day Christmas trip and would go back again. Very clean also.

I had passed Paul's Da Burger Joint a few times when walking around the East Village and had the opportunity to try it. The burgers are excellent. The meat is freshly ground for the restaurant and you get to see the burgers made right in front of you. The burgers are meaty and delicious. I had a bacon cheeseburger that was big and well cooked with a nice portion of cheddar and bacon on top with lettuce and tomato that were pretty decent for this time of year. I ate at the bar so I got to see all the action. The burgers coming out were really well cooked and the toppings were generous. The fries were really good but I thought were pricey for frozen fries. They added almost $5.00 to the price as well as the soda's were $2.50 which I thought was steep for a soda in a place like this. The food is high quality and the service is very good but I thought it was a little steep for price for the place that it was. It is a small restaurant and it was more of a student joint for the NYU students. I thought it was expensive for what it was. Still it is an experience and I highly recommend it once. Just bring your credit card!

Whenever I find myself in downtown NYC I frequent this burger joint. The burgers are delicious with thick patties and fantastic variety. The decorative atmosphere is always great.

Very nice burger, the meat was flavoury and well cooked! The location is a bit particular, but that's the place to go to eat a good burger at about 10 $

There's lots of places to eat in the East Village - for value, taste & overall experience, Pauls is one of the best. Their Burgers are great. As are the various sandwiches I've gotten. You can get a platter of pickles for the table at no extra cost. They have beer. At a good price. They have a rest room. Service is great - no fuss, no muss. You're there to eat - they're there to make you some great food and get it to you quickly. It's usually packed, so it's better if you go with just one or two folks as opposed to a whole group, but I've seen them accomodate groups of 8. Not sure what else to add. With the tightness of space it could be claustrophobic for some folks and there were times I've heard the conversation at the next table more than I heard my own, but this is in NYC, not Kansas, so whattaya expect.

What a wonderful burger joint. Their burgers are better than Jackson hole, juicy and grilled to a perfection. The wait staff was extremely friendly. The prices are extremely reasonable.

We stumbled on to Paul’s for a late dinner and could not have enjoyed it more! Fantastic burgers that are not greasy or heavy. El Paso burger had just enough spice without being too much. Bacon was crisp and tasty. Shoestring fries were my daughter’s favorite, but I loved thicker cut fries. Everything was very fresh! Service outstanding!

Every time I've been in Manhattan in the last 20 years I go to it. No frills, tiny tables, check tablecloths, corny slogans and genuine old posters and stuff on the walls and great burgers. Opposite the old Fillmore East.

As good a big burger as you are going to get for $10 in the Village or all NYC. Fries and onion rings were greasy delicious treats too. Go get you some!

The service was fast, nice, and the burger was out of this world amazing!!!! They don't take credit cards so that would be the only dislike! However, I don't blame them, the prices are great and if they took cards, they would need to raise the price to cover the fees! Great food, great service, great value!!!

The place has been there for years. Just go for the food, Your burger will be hooded exactly as you want.

One of the best hamburgers I ever had and for a resonable price. I went there for lunch. The place was not busy and I got my order really fast. If u want a real NY Burger expirence go there.

Out of the way place with really good burgers. They were HUGE. You could pass on the fries unless you wanted to just share a burger and fries with someone! I would have just skipped the fires- they weren't that good.

good burgers

For tourist like us, this place was the typical American diner experience we were looking for including the checkerboard tablecloths ;-) Burgers and Veggieburger were really good! Great value for money, too. We'll be back!

Visited in July 2019 with family. Great service, great burgers (prob best in NYC) and that to a very good price - recommended👍

First dinner in New York and we was not disappointed. The service is very nice and the burger one of the most tasty as I ever ate. For sure a small place that should be more famous.

Really good place to have lunch or dinner with friends. Nice service, hospitable and friendly staff, tasty burgers.

I got one with cheddar cheese and grilled onions. It was amazing. I suspect they grind the meat twice because when you bite into one, it literally falls apart in your mouth. This is a juicy, delicious burger in a true 1950's style. they even offer turkey versions of all their menu but I never tried any of those options. Fries are big and mine were served on a separate plate. To top it all off, I don't drink and was so happy to be able to get an ice cold Stewart's Root Beer in a bottle!!!!

Simply, the Eastside Burger (burger cooked to your liking, with cheese, bacon, ham, mushroom, onion, lettuce and tomato), which is their specialty, is the best burger I've ever eaten. Little bit of grease out the bottom, how it should be. Burger cooked beautifully, big size, with cheese melted in. Good atmosphere, old school burger type place. Walked in and got a table for two easily last Saturday night before Xmas. Not silver service but burger places shouldn't be! Guys behind the grill were top guys! Total bill for an Eastside burger with fries, cheeseburger and fries, plus two sodas, came to $28. There are plenty of good burgers around NYC I'm sure, but this will be the best you'll find! Excellent location too, East Village is a top little neighborhood to walk around and experience at night.

fat, greasy burgers

Great restaurant in the downtown Manhattan area. This place is really a hidden burger gem among a great selection of restaurants. If you are looking for a good evening out with friends to enjoy a burger then Paul's is a great place. Atmosphere was usual, a little noisy and crowded, but really great food. Food: I have had the regular bacon burger and veggie burger on several occasions here and they are to die for. Both Burgers are moist and succulent. They come with all the trimming and sides. You can also substitute your side for other things on the menu. I am a huge fan of burgers in general, so I had quite a few burgers in my time in New York, this place will definitely be high on my list to eat again. For visitors: I would recommend getting a burger and beers and sitting at the counter space, looks 50's style.

The whole look of the diner is great! They have allot of burgers to choose from. My boyfriend has a glutenallergy, he ordered a hamburger without a bun, however, non-burger-items for you to choose from. We had two drinks, two burgers and Fries. The total (without tip) was 29.50.

We discovered Paul’s completely by accident while walking around the area during our holiday. Have to say that the burgers were the best we have ever had! We returned two days later purely to have more burgers for lunch. Food here was the highlight of teenage son’s trip. Staff and decor are great too.

This place has radically mixed reviews, but we thought we'd check it out and make a decision when we got there. It looks, well, dodgy. An overgrown milkbar, with small tables covered by checkered plastic table cloths, menus were dog-earred laminated pages, the drinks menu (no wine) was aging, faded and worn. But it smelled good. My partner and I each had the same burger: a bacon cheese burger delux - that means with lettuce, tomato and fries, onions were extra. It was delicious, but not without challenges. Holding together a burger that size, including a half-pound meat patty, while trying to eat it was no easy task. The burger was nicely washed down with a Stella Artois. Staff were friendly and there was a constant stream of people in through the door.

A friend of mine introduced me to this place yesterday. The burgers were tasty and decently priced however the waitress seemed to be in a bad mood. Slow service. I saw one of the delivery guys drop one of his gloves so I went to pick it up and give it back to him. She snatched the glove right out of my hand and gave it to him as if I wasn't capable of doing that myself? He said thank you. Everyone else there was pleasant except her. So much for a first impression. I will NOT be returning to this place. Rude!

We visited this diner during a Saint Patrick's weekend visit. The staff are friendly and the food is excellent. Best meal we had during our most recent visit. The burgers are to die for.

Went with 3 adults and 2 teenagers, total bill with added tip was $115 included 4 beer. and kids sodas. Burgers were as juicy and tasty as advertised, on a bed of Steakcut fries, with a good combination of toppings to chose from. Atmosphere is loose and noisy in a good enjoying your friends/family at dinner kind of way. There are 3 small TV\s set to the current game. Restauant is fairly small, probably 10 tables..ish. We got lost a bit taking the subway and walking, and the kids all said glad we found this place! Seems to be CASH only. If you're looking for a Burger i wouldnt pass this one up.

WOW, proper burger, half pound of prime moo. Did a build your own, with blue cheese, bacon and mushroom. Cooked to your order. A brilliant medium-rare burger done just perfect. If you want an authentic Burger diner experience then head down here. Lovely service and great atmosphere.

Burgers the size of your plate ... And super tasty. Really enjoyed Paul's, service was good and the food was excellent value. One of the best burgers I had during our trip to New York.

Just off St Mark's Place on 2nd Avenue. Quaint olde world (for NYC😁).... food cheap and as they say "best burger in NY". Throw in a few Rolling Rock beers.... ya made.

Its a friendly dinner serving an ok burger. This isn't the best burger but by no means a bad joint. The staff are friendly, the food is priced well and its a ok meal. No complaints.

Unlimited pickles mark the beginning of the wonder that is Paul's. The whimsy signs and old-school diner atmosphere make a comfortable setting for a wonderful meal. The food is delicious, and you are sure to walk out full. Don't forget to grab one of their milkshakes!

Authentic homemade burgers, cooked to perfection! Vegan options, vegetarian option, and low cal ( burger without bun, served with cottage cheese). Burgers for everyone!

I ordered food through seamless.com and the order was incorrect. I called to have the order corrected and the person on the phone became very rude. He acknowledged that the order was incorrect and then stated that I received the food a few hours ago, in which I explained we just opened the order. The person proceeded to ask if I would like a credit and I stated that I would like my correct food order. He then stated that they will not be delivering to our address anymore, but he would send it. He also started calling me "honey". He also stated that he would start the order soon and it would maybe get to us in 45-60 minutes. I asked if he could start it sooner, not to call me "honey", and if I could speak to the manager. He continued to call me "honey" and stated he was the manager. He said he could do as he wanted. I told him that this was bad for business and the owner would not like this treatment of customers. As he still called me "honey", he stated he didn't care and said if I wanted to sue I could. I stated that I would leave a review on several restaurant review sites as well as speak to the Owner. He said, "so what - do what you want." He gave me his name to tell the owner in a boastful way. It was infuriating and disrespectful to be treated in such a manner, as well as saddening to know that he could act that way to a customer and a woman. Though the burgers are good, they are not worth being treated badly and spoken to like garbage. I am hoping this is an isolated incident and not an example of regular customer service.

Best burgers by far... if you eat there you also likely to meet NY's finest... eat it with the belgian frites a few doors down...

This has been my burger spot since '95!

I had heard a lot about this burger joint and I can honestly say that it lives up to all of the hype. After a huge day of walking around the spectacular sites of NYC, we were ready for some food and the blue cheeseburger and the veggie burger did not disappoint. Service was excellent from very friendly staff. Easily the best burger I have had in America.

We found this little but fantastic burger joint while wandering downtown lower east side. Soooooo glad we found it, awesome handmade burgers. Highly recommend if you want a NYC burger you visit pauls

My boyfriend was craving a burger for his birthday and we used yelp and it took us here. At first it had a weird feel to it but once we got inside the service was awesome! You can literally throw anything onto your burger and they'll try to accommodate you as best as they can! I loved it and I highly recommend it. Thanks for the great service and for allowing to give my boyfriend the tastiest birthday treat!

Real greasy spoon atmosphere...there is a big pile of obviously freshly ground beef in a stainless steel tray...you place the order and the cook grabs a bunch of it and rolls it into the shape of a patty right in front of you, then tosses onto the grill, along with the large mound of onions and the bacon that is always being prepared there is not much of a choice, but the burger is really great...the fries are just ok, it would not be difficult to have really good french fries with such a good burger...I don't usually drink soda but they have Stewart's and it is ice cold...if you have a cholesterol or high blood pressure problem this might not be the place for you....less than 15 bucks including the well deserved tip

This place has the most amazing and gigantic burgers! Love the free pickles on the table. The staff are really friendly. All around great place!

This place has one of the best burgers in the city, Iti s greasy and sloppy but very worth the mess. If you are in the mood for a nice hearty burger this is the spot. Atmosphere not a priority but the food makes up for it many times over. Also the sweet potato fries are very good. You will not be dissapointed with the food in any way. Just make sure you have alot of napkins you'll need them lol.

Giant burger for less Then 11$...thats all. Located in a super young and friendly area , this fast food/Restaurant give’s u the idea of a real american old style pub; the place itself it’s old and not well cared. The staff not so friendly and welcoming. Small selection of bottled beers, REALLY GOOD VALUE FOR MONEY.

if you are looking for classic american burgers look no further. the owner is realy kind and the burgers are great. the prices are verry cheap for new york standards.

Can't beat this for huge, excellent burgers in a 1950's New York vibe just off the beaten path in the East Village. The prices were crazy good for NYC and my teenagers loved it. If you like burger joints I don;t know how you wouldn't love this place.

This was our second visit to Paul’s and as the last time the burgers were absolutely unbelievably excellent. Can’t wait to return.

They have delicious food! We were in a group of 27, and not one person had anything bad to say about anything they ordered. I personally love the pickles!! They are very nice, very accommodating, and serve great food! I am not sure what more you could possibly ask for! We will definitely return every trip!

A hole in the wall burger joint, filled with lots of funny signs to entertain while munching on a home made burger. The guys flipping the meat are also flippant with their remarks. Not the cleanest place, including the plates and water cups (plastic! Really? Full of germs that never get sanitized even in hot dishwashers!) The bathroom is so small no one over 150lbs could fit inside...time to update and renovate da joint!

A well travelled collegue of my said I had to try Pauls for a burger while I was in NYC, she said they are the best. I was a little spectical as everyone has different tastes. It was fabulous. The prices are great, the service great, and the burgers are out of this world great. I will be going back for sure. Only thing- Please bring back your tee-shirts Paul, my collegue was so dissapointed I could not purschase one for her.

Very good burger, cooked to order. Fries were fine and the slightly divey atmosphere was very welcome on an overcast afternoon. I don't know what some other reviewer's problem is...Do they think they're reviewing a Williamsburg hipster burger bar? This is the gritty East Village, just off St Mark's Place. Good tunes on the box and the service was not fussy, but not lacking anything (waitress was fine; for those writing the staff has an attitude problem, maybe they should stay in the Upper West side). Good, honest food, fun place with a typically New Yawk flavour.

An authentic American food diner. The burger is actually just average; what made the meal a good one is its price and the decor. A simple turkey burger was priced at an affordable price of USD6. Its best seller, the bacon and cheese burger is also a respectable USD 8. And i must say, the portion is huge. The turkey patty was almost an inch and a half of solid meat. The place is also well decorated and very American. Good for an authentic all-American dining experience at a very affordable price.

If you're looking for a traditional place to eat a proper hamburguer this is your place. Big and sooo tasty hamburguers!

Paul's Place doesn't lie when they say they have the best burgers in NYC. My boyfriend and I ate there when we went to New York City and we loved it. It was near our hotel, so we didn't have to walk very far. Selection is amazing, and the atmosphere is great. I suggest everyone eat there!

I'm wondering if this restaurant has had a change in ownership since the glowing reviews I've seen here and on Yelp. We had a party of 15, so we ordered ahead. When we arrived, even though they don't take reservations and there were plenty of seats available, we were told that we could NOT sit down to eat our food! It was rudely explained to us that we couldn't sit because the waitress works for tips. Excuse me, but it isn't our fault that you are using illegal employment practices. Besides which, we DID include a generous tip with our order. We eventually were "allowed" to sit and when we distributed our food, we found that they had shorted us one meal and one drink. We didn't have time to wait for a replacement meal, so two of us ended up sharing. We did ask for the missing drink, but we never received it. The food was OK, but just OK. Based on the reviews, I was expecting a much better experience and much tastier food.

We visited Paul's after reading about it online. It was close to a theatre show we were seeing, so thought we'd give it a try. The decor is eclectic, and adds to the authenticity of the place. There was a good range of burgers and toppings, all reasonably priced, and good value for money.

These burgers are fantastic and the prices are awesome. Make sure you ask for a kaiser roll instead of their normal rolls, these burgers are juicy.

Memorial Day burger consisting of bacon cheeseburger with ham, mushrooms, tomatoes & onions. Happy MemorialDay and thank you for your service. The 80’s were rad !!! I miss them :(

we visited at around 8 on a friday night and thought we would have to wait ages. We were seated at the counter immediately. If we'd held out for a table it would have taken about 5 mins. The service was swift and friendly. The burgers are truly excellent. The meat has a great flavour and they come cooked the way the way you ask for them. The menu list a huge range of burgers. Between us we had a bacon burger, 2 cheese burgers and a St Marks Burger (cheese, mushroom, onions) and they were all wonderful. It's also really reasonably priced - we paid $30 - 35 for the 4 burgers, 4 drinks and some fries. Try it - you won't regret it!

really good burgers and fries. the selection is insane !

We found Paul's place one evening while we were walking around the Village. It was small, but cute and the burgers were some of the best I've ever had. The burgers a huge and juicy. There are some things on the menu that I would never have considered putting on a burger, but somehow they worked. We make sure we visit Pauls Place every time we go to the city/

We got this place recommended from a guy on the other side of NYC. It is a small not fancy at all place, but definitely one of the best burgers we ever have been eating!

Paul's Da Burger joint might not look like the best/nicest place in town, but is sure does deliver on its burgers and once inside it feels like a real burger joint! My girlfriend and I shared a bacon cheeseburger deluxe for lunch (which means it comes with chunky chips) and the 1/2 pound burger does not dissappoint. What I like about the burger is that I actually tastes like proper meat!Definitely worth a recommendation! Oh and you get a free bucket of pickles!!!

I came here for the burgers. I read the reviews and it looked promising. However, the burgers didn't live up to my expectations. And the gap was huge! Service was quick and friendly though. But being a burger joint, you need good burgers.

While visiting my brother who lives in NYC, we ate at Paul's. He really hyped it up and I was nervous it wouldn't be as good as he made it sound. Not the case!!!! That was one of the best burgers I have ever had! As a group we each ordered burgers a la cart and shared an order of onion rings and chili cheese fries as a table. Plenty of food for the 5 of us. Our server wasn't super warm and fuzzy but he was good at his job. Do yourself a favor and eat here!

I can't really fault them for anything. For 20 $ each including tips we were served big and tasty burgers with fries and a beer to flush it down with. At least for a foreigner this is what an American burger joint is supposed to look like. Friendly and fast service too. Recommended.

Let's say it loud-this is not a place you would come to have unique food. Food is average and typical-simple tasteless burgers and fries. But everything else is a must-direct service, open kitchen, crowds of guests, music etc etc. Stronly recommended if you want to feel like local!

Get a real burger, not some ones foo foo representation of some deconstructed or artsy piece of crap. The staff was great and the burgers were fat and juicy. It was delicious

Huge burgers that are amazing! Great price for awesome food!!! We came across Paul's as an accident. We were in the area and got hungry. So glad we did. The food was so good! Best burger ever and the steak fries were also cooked to perfection. Staff was super nice and the restaurant was cozy. The eclectic decor was an added bonus. Don't pass up an opportunity to eat here!!

Sad to say, but after coming here for so many years, I think our relationship must come to an end. Truly an amazing burger, but I recommend that the owners get new staff, especially a new waitress, one who knows how to treat a customer properly. They could also stand to do a little cleaning.

Little place that doesn't look very friendly from the outside but the burgers were great, the service was efficient you just don't have to go there with nice clothes because you will really smell like hell after it!

This burger joint has the probably best burgers in the city - plus nice staff, plus nice prices, plus unique interior. What does one need more?!

Not a fancy place by any stretch of the imagine, but food was delicious, service was quick and the prices are right. Read the signs throughout, they're fun.

OK, as a tourist, I cannot pretend I know a lot of burgers' place downtown. Anyway, the place a bit old fashioned and not very fancy, but food is good and well cooked. And that is as much you can ask to a burger joint. As a side note, staff is nice.

Boy was this place amazing ~ The way they cook these delicious burgers is a joy !!! Felt like your typical burger place in America , great steak fries and its mega affordable ~ Love this place !

Paul's is the quintessential greasy spoon diner/ restaurant. The service is good, and there is a decent selection of bottled beer. Having never been there, I was super impressed with the quality and taste of the burgers. In my opinion, the best burger in Manhattan. Reasonably priced. I will definitely go back.

good burgers and chicken salad

Every time I have a chance to visit, I eat at Paul's at least once. Don't go looking for ambience or fancy table clothes as it is not going to be found here, but they have a large menu of excellent burgers and genuine sassy New York wait staff. Cheap eats in the East Village.

We had some great burgers in this joint. They could use a little more salt, but overall they were very delicious!!

Loved my blue cheese burger! Looking forward to trying more from the large selection! Fun place.

great greasy burgers

Today I stop by this restaurant which I have walked by many many many times. I noticed the huge fake burger prop in front of the restaurant. Anyway, I ordered the Texas burger which has a fried egg on top. It was a solid burger! It was also a very large burger! I would come back again.

This is a true NY burger joint. The diner decor, fast talking wait staff, and delicious food make this is a great spot for anyone looking for a burger. Not the biggest of spaces but they can pack you in and give you great service. I got a cheeseburger and shared a root beer float and man was it great. If you want a true burger this is the place they aren’t hiding behind crazy ingredients or add-one. A great spot for good food and fun vibes.

Pretty damn good but not the best

Wife and I visited in a weekday afternoon after looking at TA reviews and it being recommended by our local tour guide (Real New York Tours-they’re fantastic!). Our burgers were delicious, filling, and cooked perfectly. We shared an order of fries, and they were great as well. Highly recommend this place if you’re hungry for a burger while in Manhattan.

Ranked in top 10 Burgers NYC consistently, you will have a great burger experience. Worth the trek or swing by when in the area- it's a fun little shop with solid food.

This place used to be called Paul's Heavenly Burger and we used to come here often for big, sloppy, delicious burgers. Entering used to feel like stepping back into the '40s, with gum-cracking waitresses and red-faced, yelling cooks at the grill. Delicious and affordable, with a very old school East Village vibe.

We stumbled upon this burger joint while taking a stroll down on 2nd ave.... you can't miss it, it has 2 big plastic cheeseburgers right in the front! The people working here are nice and friendly. The diner feel transports you back in time. The meat is fresh, the ingredients are fresh and they all come together for one of the most juicy and delicious burger you'll ever have...I can't wait to go back to NYC just so I can pay a visit (or 2) to Paul's.

Paul's has been on my list for a long time now. From the outside looking in, it looks divey. From the inside, it still looks divey. It's one of those situations where looks can be deceiving. You wouldn't think that this place would serve such great burgers. But then again, it's always the holes in the wall serving up the good eats. A friend and I came in on a Tuesday night at 6 pm. The place was empty, save for two other tables dining. I was so hungry so I'm glad we both looked at the menu beforehand and decided what we wanted. I went with the blue cheeseburger, which is a burger topped with...you guessed it - bleu cheese! I added bacon of course because come on...it's bacon. I like my burgers medium rare but this one seemed to be more on the medium side. That's usually a burger pet peeve of mine but even at medium, the burger was still great, so I can't really complain. Plus, the portion is big - it's probably at least twice the size of a Shake Shack patty. It does get quite messy though so you might not want to bring a first or second date here. Third is okay because by then, if the person cannot handle your messy burger eating habits, then it's time to say goodbye anyway! My friend had the St. Mark's burger, which is a cheeseburger topped with mushrooms and fried onions. That thing was smothered in mushrooms. I couldn't even see where the burger started. She seemed to like it though. We also had some curly cheese fries to share. I think I would have preferred plain curly fries because the cheese cooled off super quickly, making it kind of hard to eat. I wonder who this Paul person is. I would like to meet him and tell him that his joint serves some pretty great burgers. And that anyone named Paul is cool in my book (though I might be biased on that one since my dad's name is Paul too). I'll definitely be back for some more burgers and to try their philly!

Went there with 5 people. All of us got burgers (of which there seems an infinite variety), 3 sodas and 2 beers. Everyone really enjoyed the food. Atmosphere is 50s diner like, but dirtier (in a good way). Waitress was very friendly. Total bill was $69. Definitely worth checking out. Big, juicy, tasty burgers.

My friend raved that this place has the best turkey burgers ever, and I would probably agree based on my "St Marks with bacon" beef burger, which was cooked to perfection, big thick and juicy. The place is not huge, but big enough for seating and waiter service. Good quality pickle chips served also. The lettuce and tomato salad was exactly that, no more, no less, but it was fresh, and nice to have some salad options in a place like this. I would definitely go back again.

We found this restaurant by accident after going to the theatre. It said it did the best burgers in NYC so we had to try it. Yes they were right, it was the best burger we have had and the decor was great. It looks like an original 1950's diner. You must go and try it yourselves

By far the best burger joint and my favorite in NYC. It's always on my must-stop list when I go back home to visit. It has a diner feel and doesn't sit too many people. I like to take my burger out and go sit on a bench in Thompkins Sq Park. Food is excellent, service is great, and good value for the money.

This burger place looks like a 50s diner and aims for an old style atmosphere. They claim to (as do many places in town) have the best burgers in town. I do not really agree but they are good - anyway you want the burger is basically possible to have it.Many people may like the ability to choose but for me it also signals the fact that it is a place that is not sure what they think is good. I had the cheese burger and it was above average but not great. It was prepared as requested but nothing special. The bread felt like the type that can be bought at the super market so nothing special there. Service was friendly but the place was not very clean (do not visit the bathroom here - you might as well just go outside...)

Visited following recommendations and to meet friends in the area. It was an amazing experience. Very traditional diner, just like da movies!!! All patties are prepared on site to a secret recipe. Staff have worked there over 20 years and were incredibly friendly. Food was reasonably priced and tasted out of this world. Would recommend the st marks burger which was topped with mushrooms and cheese. Defo go deluxe (with fries which are more like grandmas chips). You can also order a cup of brown gravy to dip fries into. Ice cream sodas should also be a must try. So glad I got the opportunity to come here

This was my first time at this restaurant, but it won't be my last. I tried the turkey burger and my friend had a cheesburger and they were both the best burgers we have had in a long time! They had a great flavor and almost melted in your mouth. Nice, casual little place right across the street from the Orpheum Theatre. Gotta try it!

Simple yet fulfilling! All of our burgers were just as ordered, delicious, messy, oozing with our custom toppings and very filling. We had awesome Cajun fries and onion rings plus the most amazing jalapeño poppers...grilled then deep fried and oh soooogoood. So don't let the dive store front or small tables scare you away...this is one of those secret little places that will be tops on your list when you crave a quick burger full of high quality beef.

Huge burger. Place isn't very warm or friendly but what comes in your plate makes you forget everything around. Just enjoy your burger.

Arriving to the neighborhood early for “Stomp”, we decided to dive in to this dumpy diner to discover a great cheeseburger and decent fries & onion rings. If you’re looking for fancy, keep moving. This is a vintage 1960s with no update ever apparent. You betcha I’d come back !

We were going to see Stomp and needed a feed. The kids wanted Macca's but I saw this place and thought why not. Good burgers ( even a good vegie burger ) and a cool tattooed waiter. Had a good vibe about it.

What a perfect NYC burger. At Rome we say "trucido" with the best burger we eat in our holidays. We never forgot Paul's surely to came back every time. Wow!

At Paul's they know how to make one sweet, tasty burger! Portions are big and prices are reasonable (2 burgers with fries, 1 beer, 1 soft = $30). The place has got that nice American burger joint ambience to it and we got seated right away. So if you got an appetite, go to Paul's!

Must have had the best burger I have eaten at this place. No fuss, good value and amazing food. Service was really good and great atmosphere in this place. Worth a visit.

The burger was amazing and well prepared . The burger was really juicy and I will definitely be back to try another burger.

We came to East Village for a food tour which was cancelled! So decided to make our own and were not disappointed in the burgers here complete with 80s soundtrack and patrons who look like extras in the sopranos. Great burgers which are large but not dense so easy and delicious to eat. Medium rare was just that as was medium well which many more expensive places get wrong. A great find and silver lining to what could have been a miserable afternoon.

I have eaten many burgers in NYC, but I put this place at the top of the list. If you live in NYC or your visiting you have to try this place. Excellent atmosphere and the burgers feel like they melt in your mouth. Highly Recommend.

Paul's is a seat yourself burger joint. There is more Burger than bun. I always get the turkey burger which is freshly made and juicy there's a lot of history there! Whether you live here or just visiting you should stop by there's also lots to do in the neighborhood which is good because I always have to walk the food off.

Super authentic burger shop with very friendly staff. I can only recommend it! If you like "less is more" you're in good hands here.

Certainly not the best burger ever, but definitely good price-quality. Charming place with friendly service.

This place has good burgers, but not as good as I thought it would be. The mushroomes on their special burger was not cooked well enough, and their iced tea does not taste that good, but all in all the burger was great! The service is good and they help you with whatever you want.

Burgers are really good but too greasy...

The burger I had here was excellent! The atmosphere was nice, pretty quiet. I had a decent dinner here and would recommend it if you are looking for nice hamburgers. It was really well priced as well.

It used to have phenomenal burgers, cheap prices, and quirky servers. Now, it has okay burgers, expensive prices (figure $30 for a burger with any extras, fries, a drink, and a tip, plus the surcharge if you don't pay cash), and rude service. When I went, I was the only customer. After the manager told me to sit wherever, the server insisted that I walk around the other side of the table, to face in the opposite direction. No reason, just making a pointless demand.

No frills, just some of the best burgers you'll ever eat. Bar stools at the counter and gingham table-clothed tables in this unpretentious old world eatery. There are other choices, but I didn't try them. The burgers are reasonably priced and just perfect.

went there a few times but every time i go, it seems like the restaurant is filled with harleys motorcyclist looking men. burgers are decent.

Tiny diner-style restaurant; no frills but great burgers (and a few non-burger choices), variety of fries, and delicious (standard flavor) milkshakes. No kids' menu but they have grilled cheese & grilled chicken sandwiches. Reasonable prices for NYC. Cash only here so come prepared.

The burgers are some of the best in the city, and very affordable. They are rich without being too greasy, but that's just the way a burger is supposed to be.

Excellent place next to St Marks place if you enjoy burgers. Really friendly service. Don’t hesitate!!

Proper taste of new york - you have to visit here. nothing fancy, nothing commercial - just good honest burgers that taste awesome.

Beats all those other, better known burger places. Stick to the burgers, fries/onion rings, and shakes though. Other menu items can be all wrong (i.e. the philly steak).

A half pound burger of fresh meat sizzling on a hot grill. Cooked to order. Have been trying many different burgers recently in Manhattan. This is about the tastiest and definitely the juiciest around. And at $5.40 for a plain burger (cheese, bacon and many other toppings extra and available) you will not find a better bargain anywhere. Eclectic signs in place and amusing wait staff. East Village all the way.

Paul's is a truly fabulous burger house. Small and kitsch with friendly staff and amazing food. The burgers are AMAZING and the beer is cheap - kaiser bun upgrades are well worth the 75c. A huge food experience for under $10, I'll definitely visit again

We needed to eat quickly before going opposite to the Orpeum theatre. We chose Paul's burger at random and it turned to be more than what we could have expected. Great staff, very friendly and efficient...burgers made on the spot and Very tasty!

Complete dive. Almost tacky. But boy, are these burgers glorious!! Hands down the best burgers in NYC. Great price, too! Just ignore the decor and eat away!

Best Burger in NY. The meat melts in your mouth, and there are tons of choices of toppings. Prices are very reasonable, considering the quality of food.

Great tasting burger and fries, cold beer, decent prices. My partner and I stopped by for a late dinner after a show and left pleased! Must check out!

Hands down the best burger joint in NYC. Made from fresh ground beef on a flat top grill, these burgers are HUGE and cooked to perfection each and every time. Endless combinations, all the toppings you could want. Steak Fries, Onion Rings and awesome Milk Shakes round it all out. Ambiance is that of an 80's burger joint with vintage signs, counter stools, and checkered table clothes. Nothing fancy but it's clean and comfortable and the staff is legit NYC. A big shout of to one of my favorite NYC waitresses, Marcia who's singing and dancing around keeps the atmosphere lively and is nothing short of a sweetheart.

I have been going to Paul's since it's opening over 20 years ago. Paul has crafted a family atmosphere over that time and it shows in the treatment he gives his customers. I like to call it firm NYC love. The burgers are perfect as the cook's know exactly what they are doing. You MUST bring an appetite if you visit as the burgers are truly 1/2 lb in size and the extras will make holding on a challenge for some. My only regret: If only the restaurant was double in size but that's NYC for you.

If you want a great burger at a very reasonable price then this is the spot. Paul's make very fresh and juicy burgers while you wait. The fries are thick steak fries and they have a variety of toppings. The decor is no-frills, but that only befits the burger experience that much more. When you gotta have one, this is the place.

Paul's has been a neighborhood standby forever, delivering cheap and decent burgers in record time to hungry East Villagers. Lately the burgers have been just ok so we decided to try the tuna melts since we love tuna and let me tell ya, for under 6 bucks you get a HUGE sandwich of delicious tuna salad well toasted! I order mine with American cheese and raw onion and might add a slice of tomato, always WELL DONE - it's almost enough to feed 2 and it's great, I'd say the best tuna melt you can get outside your own kitchen. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, try it!

Oh wow, this is the BEST burger place I've ever been to. They ask you how you want your burger and actually cook it that way, as opposed to many burger joints I've been to where, no matter what you say, you'll always get medium. I went for the mozzarella burger which had a beautiful cheese-pull, also had a milkshake (which was perfectly thick and sweet) and shared shoestring fries with my friend. Extremely friendly, amazing food, great atmosphere (though a little loud sometimes). Hidden away but wonderful, I definitely want to come back as soon as possible! Warning though, you'll be very full.

very good burgers made with sirloin steaks, very pleasant place, fast and friendly service, price is low regarding NY usuak rates.
Great atmosphere and burgers
Great little burger bar in Greenwich village very friendly staff. I had the jalepeño burger and it was delicious would highly recommend it
