The watering hole of NYC

By Mark07666 |

An old bar that does not pretend to be anything else. I compare it to a watering hole because everyone can come drink and hang out without fear ( of feeling out of place). On any given night you can sit next to Cops, Firemen , Old timers, hipsters , Gay , straight, locals , out of towners and foreigners. Sit of awhile and the cast of characters constantly change With only three tiny TVs but a great Jukebox, .Its one of the few bars where I see people talking with one another and not constantly texting The bar tenders are great and still are old school ( buybacks ). This is the bar to visit if you want to experience what a neighborhood bar (Was , Is) back in the day in Manhattan

Excellent 'proper' pub

By Steve R |

Good beer at reasonable prices (for Manhattan), very friendly greeting and excellent chicken wings! The ideal spot to call in for a couple after a few hours pounding the streets of NYC.

Drab

By D&M |

Very old school Irish bar, quite dim & drab inside, food looked poor. Drink was ok once bar staff decided to serve you. They seem to look after the regulars

Good old fashioned Irish bar

By Dustymiller |

We were passing and dropped in for a couple of beers. This is a typical old fashioned bar and was really nice for us to unwind after a day of sightseeing. As we were leaving and asked for the bill we were given two more drinks "for the road".

Old school bar

This is a low frills bar but the food was good, service was friendly, and Guinness is on tap. As fans of the Highlander film, this was a must see on our trip

The only place in Chelsea still standing

By Kattyluv |

I've been living in Chelsea for 30 years. Almost everything has changed...every restaurant, store, parking lot, gas station....all gone bye bye. NOT Pete McManus. Everything from the lighting fixtures to the bartenders are still standing and it's all the same as before. This is an old school NYC bar with friendly staff, good prices, good music and always a smile. #authentic #friendly #locals #burgers

Great Irish pub in Chelsea

By TDeniero |

Perfect place to grab a drink after work if you arena the neighborhood. The bartenders are friendly and the food is good. Try the reuben - that's what they are known for. If there are NY sports on TV, the bar patrons will be loud, which is always fun. There are tables or you can sit at the bar. Either way, have a drink and a bite to eat in Chelsea here and you won't be sorry.

Pop Pops Top Shelf Cheeseburger with Bacon

By Stan Tecza |

Ordered the Pop Pops Top Shelf Cheeseburger with Bacon. Really really tasty. Cute old time place. Lots of character.

Welcoming traditional NYC bar

By RobbieWinston |

Whenever I am in NYC, this is my "go to" after work bar. Good selection of beer competitively priced, great jukebox and friendly staff. With a mix of locals, office workers and visitors, the atmosphere is welcoming and you never get a feeling of "this is a local bar for local people". If you want a traditional NYC bar experience, try Peter McManus.

A wonderful classic place--but Dirty

By Thorner H |

You just have to love an old school bar like Peter McManus. I came here quite often 35 years ago, as I had a girl friend that lived just up the block on W19th street. Came here earlier this week and the place had this same warm feeling it had 35 years ago. I observed two this that really bothered me in terms of cleanliness. 1. The bar back was bringing up new clean ice for drinks in buckets, and sitting on the top of the clean ice was a cardboard case of beer. The bottom of the cardboard box sitting on the top of the clean ice is a dirty careless practice. 2. I had two draft beers, during my second beer a couple of fruit flies decided to share and land in my beer. i know these are not big deal things, but more care and cleanliness should be demonstrated.

A real bar in Chelsea

By Kevin |

Was in town for a "work thing" and wanted to grab a few drinks with co-workers before heading back on the train. We happened on Peter McManus, and I'm pretty glad we did. It's an old bar, with some "old NYC" type of character. Although the food smelled good, we only had time for a few drinks. It was a great place for hanging out, having some laughs and a few drinks. Not much more than I can ask for with a pub!

OVER 200 years Old and STILL GREAT CLASSIC FOOD,DRINK AND AMBIANCE

By aminahyaquin |

This is a third or 4th generation PUB in the Chelsea district of NYC that retains its integrity and the virility of its food and drink. The atmosphere is pure retro UNCHANGED NYC timeless Pub. The food is simple and fresh, with high quality products and unstinting portions. I LOVE THIS PLACE, and HAVE LOVED IT SINCE I FIRST WORKED (My way through FORDHAM U) ATE AND DRANK THERE IN the 1970s.

Good bar good people

By Toby |

Came here late, ended up forgetting something at the bar. They kept it and I got it two days later. It’s small, but paired with a solid pint and bar food, it turns this place into a solid stop in the neighborhood.

Highlight of the Day.

First time visit to N.Y.for our son and his wife and as he if a film geek a visit to this icon was a must.Very much an old time pub but friendly staff who wanted to chat and served us lovely cold beer with plates of delicious fries(real ones like you make at home!)Our son spent the time taking loads of photos and pretending he was in Highlander. We could have easily spent another couple of hours in here but unfortunately for us we had a prior engagement. We all loved it and will return on our next visit.

Caught by the rain

By Aaron C |

On a Sunday afternoon after a busy day of helping a friend shop for furniture we started back to the subway station and it started to rain - we saw the Peter McManus Cafe and slip in to let the shower pass and enjoy a beer or so - Joe introduced himself and asked what he could get us - I ordered a Blacksmith ( 1/2 Smithwicks and 1/2 Guinness) and my friend ordered a glass of wine - the shower turned into a full blown down pour- the place quickly filled with regulars and others like us seeking shelter from the rain - Joe treated us like he had known us all our lives - one beer turned into two and two into three and some where in between a order of chili cheese tarter tots were devoured - finally the rain subsidized- we said goodbye to Joe and off to the subway station- a good Sunday was had -

We never miss it when we visit New York City

By johndsmiley |

As soon as we check into our hotel in Chelsea, we walk to the Peter McManus Cafe on 7th Avenue for lunch. It's a genuine Irish Bar, with a large bar, many tables, and televisions. The bar has a fine selection of draft beer (I get the McManus Ale), and my wife and I typically split a delicious chicken sandwich with bbq sauce. The wait staff is very friendly and attentive, and there's always someone interesting to listen to if you are a people watcher. We highly recommend it!

Very good

By CFFC |

Good food, good beer, good people, relax and chill, dont expect fancy, just a great place to go, drink some beers and eat good food

What a jewel!

By Daniel B |

I happened across Peter McManus Café while on-line searching local pubs in NYC. Multi-generation ownership and established in 1913. My girlfriend and I checked it out. Nothing fancy, but that's exactly what I was looking for. A warm, friendly Irish Pub, not a cookie - cutter chain restaurant/bar. Great menu....fantastic burgers, and the Chili was amazing. To top it off our waitress, Marion. was the best! So glad we took the time to find Peter McManus. We return to NYC next October, and we plan on a return visit to Peter McManus!

A real Irish pub in New York 🍻

By Antonio |

Beautiful pub light years away from the locals for tourists. Great food and beers, very nice environment. Average prices. Recommended!

The most fantastic authentic bar

By Frank L |

Greatest authentic local bar - with a nice selection of beer and spirits, and the most fantastic award winning burger. Go there, hang out and enjoy. 🍻🍔

Saw Pacey from Dawson's Creek here. The food is always good and bartenders nice. Amy Karidis - stop reading my reviews.

Like "butta"!

By Victoria C |

Recent lunch as I was in the neighborhood. This Irish pub is stuck in time but the burgers and the Rueben sandwiches can not be beat. Literally the corned beef melts in your mouth and the burgers (some secret ingredient perhaps) are delicious. Btw they won best burger in NYC in 2016. No surprise there.

Not What I expected

By Easterncoast10 |

We were surprised at the condition of the pub. The booth seats had large rips in them. The pub seemed pretty run down for a famous landmark. The food was OK, the portions were generous, but nothing to brag about. What totally ruined our visit was the waitress named Linda. She got involved in a political conversation that bordered on harassment.I think I would have to say she was the most abrasive waitress I have ever come across in my whole life. I will never go to Peter McManus Cafe ever again. I should have walked out when she started with her abrasive behavior.

Standard Pub Flair

By Chmpgnrose |

After enduring a gruesome stressful and worn-out workday, a friend and I came here for some libation to chill the night away. When the standard eight hour workday is over, I escape to my many passions and good company. This party of two company was not enjoyable as I had hoped when the person whom you're with was not in a good mindset killed the mood and makes it increasing difficult of his very irritable draining demon spirit. For Him: Long Island Ice Tea For Her: Cosmopolitan My dinner consists of: Tater Tots $4.90 Buffalo Wings $7.99 Peter McManus is not a standard bar but also serve food. Condiments are readily available upon arrival of food to the table or bar. I love bar food... tater tots, buffalo wings, burgers, Mozzerella sticks and fries as a foodie I'm open to all genres and ethnic foods. However to my dismay, this friend is a fool to keep a close mind for all things foodie as one can forsaken life's daily bloodline as he believes it does not excite him. Thereby making him a Petulant baby boy! Business cards are available by request of thermography printing with chessy /corny wording: "this card is not worth anything but it is free." Atmospheric conditions contains two old fashioned telephone booths with fully operational coin phones. It appears to be established for many decades as even their business card is without a telephone area code going back to the day when only Manhattan carried the 212 area code. TV screens are plastered on the walls for sports. Bar tenders are hustling busy serving patrons ergo, at times dismiss our summons for the bill to turnover this endless night. Ladies, there are no hooks under the bar for bags or personal belongings as you'll have to put it on your lap while sitting on the stool. Patrons are a mix of young professionals, hotties, men in suits, fossils, sport fanatics, foodies, avid libation lovers, and bachelors. Peter McManus is certainly a tier above a dive bar but do not bear all the overprice of an upscale restaurant.

Cool Old School Bar

By MasterP007 |

We came across this by accident and we are glad that we did. A little Irish bar in the city. We had some bar food there, as well and it was good. Felt nostalgic in here. Cool place!

A bar for a quick drink. Pretty old and beaten up inside and a hangout for the local precinct but you can still get a decent drink and pitchers of beer. Good burgers.

Nice old-school Irish pub

By Emily Cate |

Friendly pub in Chelsea with an attentive staff and lots of local patrons. Great for grabbing a pint and taking a breather, either alone or with friends.

Great bar, nice atmosphere!

By VodkaQueenNL |

As Queen fans, we wanted to see this bar as it was featured in the film Highlander. We went in and it's a beautiful, old bar which is very friendly. I hate these bars that play loud music where you cannot hear each other. We were lucky to get the seats situated exactly where the scene from Highlander was filmed. My husband ordered whisky and I asked for a vodka with diet coke - both were generous measures. Then we ordered food, my husband had a burger with fries and at first I asked for the roast beef sandwich, but was informed there was no roast beef, so went for a grilled chicken sandwich. Both arrived promptly and were delicious! Great service, great food - would return again!

My sort of cafe!

By nicola g |

A great accidental find! A cafe , that is actually a pub. Lovely friendly staff , ridiculous portions of lovely food. The sort of place you could spend the afternoon and the evening and then stagger home from .

True New York atmosphere

By ShieldMaiden20 |

Found this gem when exploring the area and decided to have lunch here, it was perfect. The burger was probably one of the best ones I've ever had and the staff were lovely and friendly. Also found out that this cafe was used in the film 'The Other Guys' which made it all the more cooler!

Friendly

By Chris Lee |

We went in on recent visit to new York as it was used in a scene from my favourite film highlander. Amazing place. So friendly. Got chatting to locals who made us so welcome. Staff were amazing.

Great 'Almost Dive Bar'

By March-Fourth |

Love this place for the decent beers and prices. The decor is a little broken down, which gives it good character. Plenty of TVs to watch the games and they have an awesomely simple and delicious ham and cheese sandwich!

Ran out of Guinness

By martynsnook |

Great local but twice in the last month they have ran out of Guinness. Once on a Friday and once on a Monday. Need to fire whoever does the stock or rebrand to a non Irish bar.

Best Burger Around. A Must Do In Chelsea.

By susan c |

We were in the city for the night and heard about McManus' burgers. No indoor seating due to Covid and they didn't have outdoor heaters but it was still worth the time in the winter weather. Burgers were great. Beers on tap were limited but we had Goose Island IPA which was good. A must do if you're in the area. And, even if not. Historic to boot, too. Price was NYC typical. ~$15/burger alone

Dont waste your time ,a bar living in the past !

By Mary W |

Would not make the effort to visit this bar when in NYC. Run down shabby bar, food terrible , beer not much better. Much nicer authentic Irish Bars around Manhattan!

Random Old-school Place

By X375IEelizabethg |

This place is very old-school, and somewhat divey, but the food is really good! Not many places like this left in NYC, worth a visit.

A True Original

By BRIAN B |

A few friends were invited here by a local who himself is a well regarded chef. The food is true pub fare, very well prepared and presented as what it is with no pretensions. The establishment is family owned for several generations and the staff are friendly, helpful and again no pretension. The atmosphere is as close to a good British/Irish pub as will be found anywhere including the British Isles. You can sit near or at the bar or have waitress service at the comfortable booths at the rear. The prices are very fare for the location. Recommended are Excellent tuna salad sandwich or burgers prepared exactly as requested. On tap are local micro brews and the setting is late 19th early 20th century with what looks like genuine Tiffany Glass windows, whose studio was not that many blocks accross town from this 19th Street at Seventh Avenue location. Right next to a subway exit this is a NYC gem.

There can be only one

By Nathan N |

Great spot to drink a double Glenmorangie on the rocks after coming from an event at Madison Square Garden, whether it be Basketball, the circus or Wrestling......there can be only one and let it be, Peter McManus Cafe!

Great bar, go here

By Larz V |

....and I always do when in town, especially since I have friends who live nearby. Never crowed during the day, it fills up at night. Reasonable prices for drinks (Jameson, right?). I have not eaten here so I can't comment on the food but the restaurant is typically full. Never had a bad time here and the cast of characters at the bar is always entertaining. This is a great NYC bar! Old, in the best way.

Best bar in NYC

By Chris H |

Visited from UK and this was our 4th time here. Originally came because I’m a massive Highlander fan and this was where the bar scene was filmed. We now come because it just has a fantastic vibe and the food is amazing. Wife had burger and I had club sandwich and neither of us could manage to eat all of it there was that much. Bar staff are so friendly. Really interesting being from UK to see where locals go to drink and just people watching. We will be back!!

Cozy and Delicious

By Vicki D |

Let me start off by saying I do not frequent NYC very often so I can't really compare this place to others, but what I can say is that this was a great place to eat for my family and I after a long hot day of walking in the city. We were starving and looking for a nice place to sit down out of the heat and have a late lunch without breaking the bank. Thankfully we found Peter McManus Cafe. The atmosphere is very laid back and old school. Part of me wants to say it was a bit rundown, but the other part of me wants to call it quaint. The waitress was super friendly and patient while we got ourselves together and figured out our orders. The food was DELICIOUS and the portions were huge. Even my 12 year old ate almost half of her sandwich, which is a miracle if you've ever had a super picky 12 year old. The prices were really not bad considering you're in NYC. I've certainly paid a lot more for a lot less in other places! Ii would not hesitate to recommend this place and I hope we have a chance to visit in the future.

Old School Irish Pub

By Charles M |

We have passed by this pub hundreds of times over the years and never gone in, but I am glad we finally discovered this old time pub with a relaxed atmosphere and great burgers.

Brews for a Sunday afternoon

By Stephanie M |

I went with friends for beer and conversation and enjoyed myself thoroughly. It was a Sunday afternoon and the place was busy. We lucked out and got the front end of the bar and secured seven bar stools! There is constant traffic and looked like the regulars mix well with the tourists and newcomers. The bartender was great...friendly and attentive. Music level was just right and 2 TVs in opposite corners had sports on tap. I liked the place and if I lived in this NYC neighborhood I would frequent it often.

Fine establishment

By JimMDerby |

Wanted to go here for ages and finally made it. Saw some of the other reviews, however if I was living near by, I would love this place to be my local. Doesn't seemed to have changed for ages & rightfully so. Just watching people coming in for a few pints and a bit of food.... nothing that you would see on social media, just people going to the pub. Exactly what you want from your local.

Definete MUST!

By Andreas v v |

I was in town for a few weeks for work and stopped by every afternoon. EVERYBODY working here is totally friendly. The menu is great, and every food item coming out of this kitchen looks always awesome, and according to pretty much every customer eating here, is just short of "the very best".Special thanks to the "cool cat" Mr. Howie, and Lawrence, Eileen and Bill. It was been a pleasure, and a very positive New York City experience. No "rude" New Yorkers here. Thanks! Make sure you check with Phil in the afternoon, before changing TV channels ;-)

Burgers and beer with Irish Flair

By Scott_R_Seattle |

Old-school Irish bar with excellent selection of Irish and British beers on tap. Bartenders know how to pour a Guinness. Service is friendly, lots of locals. Burgers are outstanding. Otherwise, standard pub fare. Room to move except on weekends.

Old NY

By Murray007 |

I love this bar and visit every time I am in New York. It is old old established and has the feel of a just post prohibition bar, the owners family has been around for 100 years plus. My first visit was after taking the owners son Justin (aged around 5) to the movies to see Snow White and the seven dwarfs in 1987, myself and my friend were on J1 visas from Ireland and did some childminding. It hasn't changed a jot over the years and that's a good thing. Lots of old neighbourhood bars (like Dunleavys where i worked) are long gone but this one has staying power. It's an Irish American bar but not of the fake leprechauns and green beer ilk, this is the real McCoy. Try it, you will love it.
