Average Restaurant (which is still pretty good)

By greenham01 |

For the hype given, I was kind of disappointed, but on an overall Chinese food scale, average tasting in high end Chinese restaurant category. Not bad but had much better before. Service was attentive, (we were one of 3 guests as we had a very late lunch). The hot and sour soup was a bit starchy, the color darker than normal. Not too sour but also lacks the pepper punch. Yangchow fried rice was decent, but at $16, a very small portion. The Cantonese roast duck was a disappointment, and it came towards the end of the meal when we had virtually finished the rice by then. Ironically, the duck was cheaper than the rice? Overall, better than some Chinatown hole in the wall restaurant but value wise, seemed expensive.

Excellent Chinese

Pig Heaven Consistent For Over 16 Years

By squibjib |

We have been eating here for over 16 years because they are always great. The orange beef is famous in our world. A must eat for us every time we get to New York. Fried rice is great. The ribs are huge & meaty. We always over order so we can have left overs for the next couple days. A favorite Chinese place for us on the upper east side of NYC.

Best Chinese Spare Ribs in NYC

By Jerry L |

You pay a little more for an order of these delicious pork spare ribs but the taste and value are worth the price. The spare ribs are always fresh and meaty. They can be ordered cooked regular or cooked crispy. I also enjoy their crispy pork dish and recommend it to all our friends. Pig Heaven also produces very fine beef, poultry and seafood dishes. There is a bar at the entrance of the restaurant where you can sit and watch TV while dining or you probably would like to sit in the comfortable and spacious main dining area in the rear of the restaurant.

Porcine Delights

By SueKot |

I don't know whether the reference to heaven relates to the pigs who make the feast or the diner at this great restaurant. Ribs are truly a signature dish as are the rest of the pork offerings. The owner was very helpful making sure that our request for even spicier and hot was met in full. Other non-pork dishes were excellent including chilli shrimp and the usual Genergal Tso's chicken. The vodka martinis were large and very good value. Definitely a place to visit

Still wonderful after all these years!

Great food, great service, and Nancy Lee is the best ! She greets you at the door and makes sure your evening is perfect. As a life-long New Yorker, this is the place to go for Chinese food. You will love it!

Love this restaurant!!!

By Annick123 |

IMO, this is the best Chinese restaurant in Manhattan. The scallion pancakes are fantastic - light and crisp, unlike at other places where they can be heavy and dense. The sesame noodles are great. I am not a spare ribs person, though my husband and kids never fail to order them, and then re-order them. Sesame chicken, Shredded Pork, and, my favorite, Grand Marnier Shrimp, are all staples with us. But I don't think you can go wrong with anything on the menu. Divine as the food is, the best thing about Pig Heaven is Nancy Lee. She is warm, friendly, really adorable. And has a great staff. My husband and I started bringing our kids here when they were very young. Now, in their 20's, when we offer to take them out to eat, and I ask, where do you want to go, the answer is always the same: Pig Heaven. They love it, we love it, it's wonderful.

Friendly and fun with good food

By CLNYC85 |

This place offers good Chinese food in a lively fun and casual atomosphere on the upper east side. The owner Nancy is wonderful and definitlely takes care to make sure that her customers are happy. The dishes are all quite good with my favorite being the dumpling, beef and broccoli and the stir fried french beans. Friday and Saturday evenings around 10pm there is a live band that provides great entertainment and a fun evening for all.

Somewhat disappointing

By Das4545 |

I was looking forward to the ribs. They were not up to my expectations. Sweet and sour soup was just so so. The steamed dumplings in a peanut sauce were very good. Service was excellent. It's a pretty place. Pricey for Chinese food in the area.

BBQ Spare Ribs were delicious

By Tatjana B |

We've had the signature BBQ spare ribs. We tried a few dishes from the lunch menu as well: Shredded Beef with spicy Green Chili, Pork juicy buns and steamed seafood dumplings. Everything was very tasty. The service was great and we enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere.

very good

By scott92 |

We saw a show on the travel channel on rib places. Pig Heaven was one of the spots reviewed as excellent. my wife and i went there last night for dinner and, of course, ordered the barbecued ribs. We rated them as very good Asian style ribs but we have had better here in Phoenix. We then ordered chicken in orange sauce which wa excellent. Very crispy chicken and a great orange sauce with actual fried orange peal for more flavor. Nice atmosphere and it was a local place. We had a nice conversation with a young couple with a one year old child sitting next to us.

Amazing BBQ Spare Ribs

By Leo M |

First things first - the BBQ Spare Ribs are Amazing! Literally the best Chinese Spare Ribs I have ever eaten. I had hoped to balance the meaty, fatty, sweet flavor of the ribs with the Brussels Sprouts but they were anything but veg forward. Good-ish mind you...but in the same heavy flavor profile. The problem (well really my problem) with Pig Heaven is that I can't quite figure out how to make a meal here. From looking at the dishes at other tables it appeared that the Sichuan food just wasn't going to be fiery enough to cut through. And I didn't see any light veg dishes on the menu either. That said, I do want to come back and try some more pork dishes. I just need to figure out what 'goes with'. The decor was sort of generic modern Asian and the service was excellent.

Better off at Chinese Buffet

By Nicole B |

I simply don't get it?? Have people never had spare ribs or something! This place was highly recommended so we made the trip from times square. The ribs are waaay overpriced. $19 for several bones with no sides? Really! Followed that up with a pork stir fry dish that I could have gotten in China town for half the price, and triple the flavor. I think this place has a monkey see monkey do following. That's the only thing that makes sense to me. On a positive note, the owner did come around to the tables and was friendly.

Beef with garlic sauce - ++++ strange name but great place.

Beef with garlic sauce - ++++ strange name but great place.

Sent my sister's family in they fell for the ribs.

By micheal j |

Needless to say the quality has not diminished to say the least. I have been coming to this restaurant for over 14 years. I always get the Spare ribs which are simply to die for to say the least. I also love the Grand Marnier Shrimp which is simply divine. Would highly recommend it.

Less than expected

By Przeglad |

We looked at some reviews and expected a nice place, The day was cold, very cold. Inside there were only a few customers but we were told to sit in front, the rest was "closed." The front had no heat working ( actually repairmen arrived while we were eating lunch,) Calamari as a starter was fair. Peking duck good in terms of taste but arrived at the table wrapped up in totally cold pancakes. What a shame to serve such good food in cold wrapping. Wine list acceptable.

Great Chinese ribs

By jsuz75 |

We visited Pig Heaven for the sole purpose of trying their ribs, and they did not disappoint! We also had the sesame chicken--excellent--and the dumplings. The service was friendly, the interior very light (even on a rainy day).

So Good!

By DisneyDarwin |

The spare ribs are legendary for a good reason. The popcorn shrimp, pork soup buns and pork fried rice are also divine. Go. Eat.

Great place

By GabyLI |

We came after a long day at the museum, we had no reservations but they took as in anyhow. We didn't have to wait. Food is fantastic, very tasty. Service exceptional! Place is clean, friendly and family friendly. Definitely a come back!

Tasty Chinese dinner

By zdog |

Loved the fried meat dumplings and Orange Beef. Prices were very reasonable for NYC, service was quick and attentive. Also enjoyed the wonderful relish left table side preorder. Easy to find on 80th street. Highly recommend for Szechuan Chinese

This place is not even close to the old locations quality

By Allan S |

The new rebirth of this restaurant. Is not making it. I found the food very expensive and food had a greasy taste to it. The old place had character and the new one has. One of it. It is dark in there and I for one not Return to this remake.

Delicious Spare Ribs

By Harvey M |

If a restaurant named Pig Heaven was put to a test to see it is worthy of the name Pig Heaven, tasting their spare ribs would be it. They passed with flying colors, in part due to the light honey coating on each meaty rib (9 to a large order, $19.95).

Busy and attentive service here. I feel like I want to think of my hometown taste and kindness.

Maybe Not for the pig, but for Us

By Sharon M |

From the dumplings to the ribs it was very good but our favorite never saw a pig. It was a classic Peking Duck. Served ready wrapped and stuffed with duck with drumsticks on the side, we were delighted and another pig lived to see another day. The rest of our party also enjoyed a fried pork with orange sauce but for me - bring on the duck!

Incredible evening..great ribs....awesome hostess!

By Koeka B |

My wife and I found this place through the food network...we initially intended to stay for an hour....we ended up spending the rest of the evening! We ordered a lg order of ribs and dumplings which were awesome...we were there the Saturday before Easter..the place only had a few regulars who told us usually on a Sat night it would be packed with people, so we lucked out...there was live music which played mellow rock from the 70's -80's (great guitarist) but it was the restaurant's owner Nancy who we fell in love with...she was so gracious and greeted everyone who came in and said good bye to all who left...we ended up dancing and laughing together which really made our night...the food that other customer's were eating look very very good as well...can't wait to go back!

Nice Chinese Restaurant

By SarahBridges |

We decided to try this restaurant for its spare ribs. They were good. The restaurant is clean and managed under the watchful eye of the owner. We went because we were in the neighborhood. Wait staff extremely nice and efficient. Food okay.

Home town Taiwanese food!

By CChenWei |

If you would like to have a real Taiwanese Cuisine experience, just come to Nancy Lee's Pig Heaven Restaurant, it's very unique, very tradition, especially the pork ribs, peking duck, 3 glass chicken and dried stir-fried french beans (long beans). Just love it!

Disappointed but good

By Ross T |

Before leaving for NYC I searched for a suckling pig restaurant. And the online menu for Pig Heaven had it. After a subway ride a short walk we sat down outside. The menu we were given had suckling pig on it so we ordered it. However, we were told they no longer serve suckling pig. Disappointment. Ordered the ribs and pork fired rice. The ribs were good and the rice excellent. I guess I will have to go to Hong Kong to satisfy my desire.

The worst ribs ever

By Jacob K |

The worst ribs ever for the money, very dry almost like cardboard, or maybe because it took 1 hour to deliver. Got order wrong too. Gave me egg drop soup instead of hot and sour. Dumplings were good.

Wonderful food and superb service

By Katharine W |

I first visited Pig Heaven (in its old location) with my sister, who was a 'regular.' It was a neighborhood fixture, and now, in its new location- not too far from the old one-it still seems to be a favorite. The food, although not 'cutting edge,' is always plentiful and very good. The atmosphere is festive, and the service is excellent and professional. Nancy, the owner, is the most gracious of hostesses, and makes everyone feel special. The drinks and food are both very reasonably priced. I have noticed on my visits individuals, couples, and groups (including children).

Terrible Chinese Food!

By thistravelingdesignr |

Pig Heaven is a real disappointment. The said the ribs were the speciality, but they were dry and overcooked, as the cantonese style roast duck. That was a truly awful dish. Having lived in Hong Kong for many years I know good Chinese food, and this is not it! The shrimp dumplings were the most acceptable, but even those were very salty. The steamed pork dumplings were dry and disappointing. It is also very overpriced. Don't do it!

Best Value for Great Food Especially at Lunch

By SueKot |

Pig Heaven is located close to the Metropolitan Museum between 80th to 81st. It is always a restaurant we return to when we are in NYC. This visit we had both lunch and dinner. Lunch is the best time to visit for many reasons. First it is a quiet time so a booking is not required. Secondly there are lunch time specials. Each main dish comes with vegetable spring rolls, a choice of soup and either white or brown rice. Thirdly it is just pure unadulterated good value. Dinner is a more hectic affair. It is obviously not merely for the restaurant but also the takeaway crowd. We ate on a Sunday evening and counted a myriad of pink plastic bags being ferried to drivers and then onto customers. As to the food, the porcine delights remain with the barbecue ribs attracting the most interest. So popular are these that there is always a risk that they may run out. All the food is great. We had the General Tso's chicken and chilli shrimp as well. Both were made more spicy for us. Service is efficient.

How the mighty have fallen

By Kitty272727 |

Way back we liked this place for new and authentic Chinese. Now the table is set with knife and fork (not even a Southeast Asian spoon), the menu is all English and many dishes are misnamed and misplaced on the menu. The main course “Pork Butt” was an appetizer of small sliced roast pork. The Szechuan hot dumplings were not hot. The shredded pork with vegetables, defined by the waiter as cabbage (I know that cabbage and vegetable can be the same word in Mandarin) but was preserved mustard and bamboo shoots. Aside from mistranslations, the service was reasonably good though a bit eager to remove plates before we were finished. I was the only Asian customer. Now I know why.

Awesome!!

By katarsiz |

FANTASTIC FOOD. Everything we tried was delicious. Great service! Celebrated a birthday even the cake was out of this world. This is the 3rd time we visit since we started coming to NY and it never disappoints. Love the atmosphere!

My first real try at Chinese. Back in the 80's.

By Coon1969 |

Go and visit every time we are in The city. Hope they work out the lease issues! Love their lo mein and much much more. Well worth the cab ride uptown!

Visiting and we had to eat here...

By Aaron L |

This was literally the first place we ate during our most recent trip to NYC. Amazing service. The prices are super amazing for New York. For two, appetizers, entrees and beers it was basically $80. The food is to die for. Get the pig heaven pork, your mouth won’t be sorry. Also Mandy was our server and she was super amazing... we will be back very soon.

Another Good Meal Here

By Harvey M |

This was the 2nd time that I have eaten here since the restaurant moved from 2nd Avenue to this location. The food was again good. I started off with 8 Steamed Pork Dumplings ($8.95) as my appetizer. It was enough for two people to share. They were delicious, they came with a soy sauce on the side. My main course was Scallops with Black Bean Sauce ($21.95), which came with red and green peppers, everything mixed together. Although the scallop taste was clearly there with each scallop, the black bean sauce was the dominant taste. I would have preferred for that not to have been the case, and that one would enhance the other.

No Reservations

By Peter C |

To frame this review, I first went to Pig Heaven the year it opened (1984). Looking for a casual Christmas Day dinner, I thought it would be fun to go back and was pleased to see they're still around, albeit in a different location. I called to make sure they were open and if I needed a reservation and they assured me they were available and that there would be no trouble getting a table. As you probably have guessed, we arrived to a busy restaurant and told there was no way we were dining with them that night. Not really sure what more you can do other than lean on the other 26,000 NY restaurants for a better experience.

Always good - Best Chinese UES

Best ribs in NYC. Good duck. Chef will make special dishes. $$$ for Chinese but you get what you pay for. REALLY GOOD FOOD!

Average

By robcurtross |

Hey pretty restaurant with a very attentive and helpful staff. Cleanliness was acceptable. Unfortunately, I was not impressed with the food. The ribs which are highly touted elsewhere were very dry and I couldn't decide if they were overcooked or just poorly marinated. Prices for the quality were much too high for my budget.

Do They Have A New Head Chef????????????

By Harvey M |

The last three times I have eaten here I found that the food was not equal to previous visits in regards to what were my favorite foods there. Those favorites included the Spare Ribs which were in the past very moist. The previous two times I had them I did not write a review of them. After experiencing dry Spare Ribs for the third time in a row, I am writing about it today. Also disappointing were the Shrimp Rolls which were also very good in the past.

Very popular, but more expensive than most neighborhood places

By daylilly50 |

We had heard alot about Pig Heaven, but honestly dont know why people think it is so terrific. The ribs seem to be the big thing, but as we dont eat ribs we felt the other dishes were very ordinary. Portions were surprisingly small, especially since dishes are shared.. A pet peeve with any restaurant is serving dishes that contain ingredients not mentioned on the menu, and this was true here too. Always ask if you have any concerns. It is also costly, with most dishes in the high teens or 20's.

Great neighborhood restaurant in the Upper East Side

By raoul t |

I get to New York a few times a year for work and, if I am able, I always try to fit Nancy Lee's Pig Heaven into my itinerary. Firstly, Nancy is charming and finds a way to remember me even though I am not a regular. The spare ribs are the main attraction but honestly, you cant wrong with just about anything, particularly the specials on the back page of the menu. Most of the time, I dont even look at the menu and ask the waiter to pick something for me and I have yet to be disappointed!

Failed management good food.

By David L |

This would be about a 4, 4.5 review, if Pig Heaven could manage reservations and Holiday crowds. The food is extremely solid, and in particular, as you would imagine, the pork is excellent. The new ownership appears to have failed to understand that Chinese Restaurants get busy on Christmas day in New York, and that if you accept a reservation over a month before Christmas for a large party, paying some attention to this on Christmas day is important. We booked well before the Holidays, checked back in day of, and were treated to one of the most infuriating experiences imaginable. It's not a good sign when you show up on time to your reservation and people are literally screaming about their hour late take out orders. We were told we needed to be on time, and would not be seated without our entire party. We arrived to a scrum at the door, and a prompt "we're running 20 minutes late" 30 minutes later, they offered up a table for 16, with plates for 20, for a party of 25. The whole time the entire length of the space was filled with unhappy people trying to get in and out of the space. Having just seated people adjacent to both ends of the space they offered us,they could do nothing, except wring their hands and repeat "I'm so sorry" We ended up with 9 of our party walking, because it was clear the restaurant wouldn't be able to resolve the situation. The food which arrived in disorganized waves was extremely good, but the entire time we were there the staff was arguing with people over reservation, waits and delayed delivery / take out orders. This does not improve the ambiance of the space. Food solid. Management overwhelmed, and ultimately unwilling to actually do anything to compensate for a ruined family evening. They reluctantly didn't charge us for 1/3 of the food. Of course, they didn't serve 1/3 of the food, because, 1/3 of our group left. If the management is unhappy with this review, let me say. "I'm so sorry." "I'm so sorry." "I'm so sorry." There, I've now done as much as you were able to do.

Delicious! Really the best Chinese in...

By Drmomtravel |

Delicious! Really the best Chinese in the neighborhood - we've brought people here from all over and it's always a hit. We love the fried tofu, eggplant, ribs and juicy buns.

Rude! Rude! Rude! Don't go there unless you want to leave without completing a meal because other customers are waiting...

By jigiindia |

We walked into Pig Heaven for dinner today at 6:30 without a reservation. The proprietor/hostess seated us at the table closest to the door (it's November and every time the door opens, there is a gush of cold wind that comes in) citing that we didn't have reservation. The fact that we had a 10 year old child with us didn't seem to matter. Anyway, we were seated in the cold zone and ordered our food. Service was quick and the food was excellent. No complaints on this. As soon as we neared completion of our meal, our plates were cleared away. Efficient - we thought. Next we asked for the dessert menu - and what so we hear? They cannot serve us dessert because there are other people waiting at the bar counter (walk-in customers who had come in without reservation anyway)! How disgusting is that? The Chinese restaurants are not renowned for politeness, but this restaurant takes rude behavior to an altogether different low. They serve good food but so does every second restaurant in Manhattan! They call themselves Pig Heaven?! Make that Pig Hell...We paid USD 50 for 3 items - a pork dish, a chicken dish and a fried rice...but left red with rage and a bad taste in our mouth.

Great food and amazing host

I went with colleagues for a business dinner and really enjoyed the food. The service was kind and attentive and the owner was very friendly and welcoming. The BBQ ribs are to die for.

Best Peking Duck on the East Side

By Athanasia L |

Don't go there for atmosphere, but do go there for Peking Duck. It is excellent! Prices are reasonable and staff is friendly. It is located a couple of blocks from The Comic Strip (comedy club). Great place to eat either before or after you enjoy some comedy.

nostalgic for the old place

By nimo5 |

We used to go to original on second avenue, the food was so good. So on our recent trip to NY we visited here. First the atmosphere is very lacking, the tables are close and crowded, the lighting is harsh and unflattering and allows for no atmosphere at all, then the food arrived and we were not happy at all, the pork was ok, but the chicken/shrimp dishes not good. The service was also poor, the food not served at the same time, difficult to get a waiter, etc. We won't be returning.

Won't go back.

By Toni S |

I used to go to the old location often. My favorites were the vegetable Moo Shu and the ribs. This was my second visit at this location and my last. The Moo Shu although fresh lacked any flavor at all. In the past it had incredible flavor. The ribs were dry, greasy and also flavorless. The prices were very high even for NY. I would have given it only 2 1/2 stars if I could. In the past I loved their duck but don't dare even try it at the prices and the disappointments.

Dang good "Chinese"

By matsays |

OK, I didn't actually "go" to the place, my wife picked up some take-out...just a quick meal of dumplings and lo mein and it was extremely good. I'm a bit of a traditionalist so I like my dumplings shaped in the crescent but these little nuggets were incredible and the ball shape probably helped keep them super juicy. The lo mein was not over salted but had tons of flavor. OK, so it wasn't the most exciting meal but it was definitely good eats.

Best Chinese in the Upper East Side

By citygirl0626 |

Everyone always raves about the ribs at Pig Heaven. The rumors are all true. Pig Heaven DOES have the best Chinese style ribs in NYC but this restaurant is so much more. There are dozens of delicious pork dishes but don't let the name of this place fool you. There is no shortage of chicken, beef, seafood and vegetable dishes. The dry-cooked stringbeans are very well-seasoned and the bee and asparagus is out of this world. The food here contains no msg and is not oily like some other Chinese places. Give Pig Heaven a try! It is easy to see why Pig Heaven is more than 30 years old!

Thank you Kelly and Ryan!

By TexasEric |

We watch the Kelly and Ryan show on the daily, but we are travelers not tourist and know our way around a good restaurant. We heard about this place from Kelly on air and then Ryan mentioned it too. So we decided to check it out in November. We went twice in two days. For our trip in December we insisted we would not go back and we would give the rest of NYC a chance. That did not work out. We found ourselves in the familiar Uber making the journey from our SOHO hotel up to the Upper East side. You must get the ribs!! We have also had the pineapple fried rice (really cool presentation) ham fried rice, the scallion pancakes, fried dumplings and spring rolls. Not one thing has disappointed! Did I mention the ribs? I did, well they are worth the second mention. They also have delivery, but not sure the limitations on distance, etc. But the service at the restaurant and location make dining in a great experience.

Amazing food, no fluff

By K S |

If you want great chinese without the snobby atmosphere this is the place. We use to live in NY and have come to this upper east side restaurant for 20 years. Now whenever we come back, we make sure to have dinner here. The front is a little fancier than the back which is still decorated with what else, pigs. Complimentary fresh pickled cabbage and cucumbers start you off. We recommend the spare ribs, steam or fried dumplings and suckling pig for appetizers. The pork with garlic sauce is the the best in the city.

Excellent food, even the non-pig dishes. But confirm your reservation

By Statmans |

I first heard about Pig Heaven on one of the food channels. They were searching for the best spareribs, and mentioned this place on the upper east side of NY. I went on Trip Advisor and read all the glowing reviews as well as the one that complained about sitting near the door because they didn't make a reservation. So months before the trip, I called and made a 7pm reservation on the Saturday of Memorial day weekend. When we arrived, 2 of the people in our party were sitting a table away from the door in the noisy bar area. I asked the hostess why we were seated there, and she claimed there was no reservation in our name. I insisted we did make the reservation, and gave her the approximate date I called. She went into the back room, came up and said they did have a table, but it was a long one and not round. Would we be ok with this (7 in our party). We agreed, and were seated immediately. The ribs are every bit as good as everyone says. Meaty, with a pleasant Chinese BBQ sauce. They bring you more in case you want it. The peking duck was very lean with a crispy skin. We also ordered a stir fried noodle dish, shrimp with walnuts, and a fish dish on the back of the menu. Everything was excellently prepared. We eat a lot of Chinese food in many different areas, and will be back on a future visit to NYC>

Great food make u want to dance!

By Angela G |

The food here is amazing and the owner miss nancy is very Down to earth I have been going there for year I recommend pig heaven to everyone You can't go wrong with anything you order I just love the place. Get the ribs they are my favorite

Good variety. Good value. Good sevice

By Morgan2010 |

We ordered a couple of pork dishes - no surprise there. Actually, we had pork dumplings first, so make that three pork dishes. Dumplings were good, a bit of a challenge to eat. Fun. Shredded pork Peking style was just the right spice level. Moo Shu pork dish also very nice. Pancakes really good.

What were we thinking

By Baldwineguy |

This restaurant was crazy busy because it was the day before Christmas! We were crammed into a corner and were stuck there. The food was nothing to rave about and the problem was compounded by too many reservations. People were lined up out the door. Highlights were the BBQ Ribs and the $15 corkage fee for BYOB

Surprised & Excellent

By Cindy R |

Went with my wife this past Saturday night (June 8). We had Peking Duck & Scallion Pancakes. Best Scallion Pancakes we've had. Peking Duck was as good as we've had. Ambiance was pleasant (unpleasant when cold outside and crowded, though). We seldom go to Chinese restaurants, but we do order in. We will order in from Pig Heaven.

Chinese New Year

By Mark B |

I had not been to this place before and perhaps Chinese New Year was not a representative time to go........however, I did have a chance to try about all of the most notable items on the menu. Well worth a visit. Make sure you try the spare ribs and duck. The three glass chicken was also pretty darn good.

Disappointing

By WestchesterP2 |

I don't plan to return. Service was bad. There was an error with our order. Took forever to get served. Food is mediocre. Wonton soup was tasteless. No atmosphere.

Everyone is right. the ribs are the BEST!

By Catsplash |

Yes the ribs are a must have. They are very flavorful, moist, delicious, and finger licking great. Don't go just for the ribs. The other items on the menu are also fantastic especially shu mi (spelling?) and steamed shrimp and veggies. Yes it is upper east side and not your crasy china town greasy spoon type resturant. You will not be disappointed.

Best Chinese roast pork and spare ribs anywhere!

By DoubleR004 |

I travel all over the world and quite a lot to Asia. nancy Lee's Pig Heaven is HEAVEN. The absolute best Chinese spare ris and roast pork anywhere in the world. Every dish is beautifully prepared and they will make it exactly how you want it. They recently moved to a new location and was worried that it would not be the same. It was PRESSLEY the same. The Grand Marnier Shrimp out of this world, the Chow Fun the best I every had, the the Peking Duck, crazy good. You will be treated like royalty by the staff and if you get to meet Nancy a real delight. If you are in NYC, get there immediately.

Nothing Like NY Chinese !!!

By Beth E |

Excellent service and was even warmly greeted by owner Nancy Lee (it was the second time in the week we ate there!) Nothing like NY Chinese !!! when you can't get it where I live now ! Pineapple fried rice was delich !

Pig heaven

By Exploration755970 |

My husband went to pick up food during this scary time of covid 19. We were told food would be ready at 8:00. He went. And he waited. For forty minutes. And then after no apologies they would not honor gift certificates that had been given to us. Insult to injury, no mustard, duck sauce or extra soy. If you’re going to feed people especially during a crisis learn how to do the right thing. Owner was downright rude. Don’t go!!! We were loyal customers for over 20 years.

New Location and STILL AMAZING GRAN MARINER SHRIMP

By Stylelust |

Nancy has a new home and I just got to visit - love the rearrangement of the pigs. They all seem to be smiling at you! Fabulous food and so happy that the Gran Mariner Shrimp did not lose its taste in the move. What makes those so delicious? And the ribs? finger licking good plus. A great place to share and enjoy with friends. Make a reservation and plan to enjoy.

Old favorite - 38 years!

I go out of my way to stop into Pig Heaven when I'm in town. Since I last visited they moved from a cavernous space further east to a closer in, more intimate, and, I think, nicer location on 3rd. I stopped in alone and Nancy very nicely picked her two favorite dishes and gave me half orders so I could savor more than just one dish. And Nancy doesn't look a day older than my first visit 30 years ago. Then again, she was on her way out to the gym.

Lost it's Ethnic Direction

By Jeffc1948 |

The old restaurant was an authentic Chinese restaurant serving at the intersection of Pork dishes and Taiwanese Cuisine. My wife who is Chinese loved it there, especially the "Pig's ears" and soy milk alternatives. The new swisher restaurant has lost that identity and serves relatively standard NY Chinese food. I was particularly perplexed why they skipped the original ethnicity of the food. For example not mentioning that the pork dumplings (tough pastry) were Shanghai style.

A Great Chineese place in New York

By The Modern food lover |

It is one of the real Chineese Good Places in Manhattan ! I have enjoyed every time we came there depite the place it does not look very fancy ! Food is Great ! Enjoy it and tell them Maria & John have sent you !

Popular and Pricey!

By Tripper10021 |

We too heard rave reviews but agree that the food is good but not spectacular considering the price and popularity. Dinner portions are average, not the big portion one would expect. Presentation is neat and nice. We had Gen. Tso's Chicken. Beef Chow Fun and Crispy Shrimp - bill was $65 not including tip or drinks, which is rather expensive. Decor is not as nice as their old place but comfortable enough. Staff are warm and accommodating. If you go, call ahead to make a reservation because this place does get busy!

Make a total pig of yourself with the heavenly ribs

By Sue K |

Most of the dishes here are above the above neighborhood Chinese restaurant. The outliers are the bbq ribs that are the best anywhere.

East side Chinese

By John B |

Oh, don't underrate THIS place. It has the usual, Chinese-type fare, but also has Cantonese specialties ... incl. roast duck and/or roast chicken ... plus "flattened" shrimp in shells, and even white-cooked pork and shredded pig's ears. The desserts are also innovative, and this is an outstanding member of the Chinese/NYC type of inexpensive meals.

Absolutely Delicious & Awesome Service

By NancyG58 |

My husband, sister-in-law, and I ate at Pig Heaven at 1420 Third Ave. In NYC on a Saturday night. There was a party going on so Nancy, the owner, let us sit at a large table even though we just walked in without a reservation, but that way we didn't have to wait. The ribs are "out of this world" and the pineapple rice with chicken & shrimp was served in an actual pineapple!!! Everyone went out of their way to make sure we were extremely satisfied with our meal and bring us extra sauce (2 times). Nancy is so friendly and made our visit fantastic!!! We will definitely be back ASAP!!! DELICIOUS Food & SUPER Service!!!

Big name slightly disappointing

By Allan S |

Other than great ribs I find this well known place disappointing. The food is rather bland and over priced. If tiuvjustcwantvgoodcchinese ribs then this will make you happy but I like multi courses and there is no life in the place. Sorry but they need to revamp

it's upper east side

not really chinese but more catering to the upper east side crowd this place has been there for a long time--if you want real authentic chinese ribs head to chinatown--cute place but you are paying upper east side price

Re-think this place when ordering in

By Randi M |

We were invited to a family members home for a family reunion dinner. The idea was order in from Pig Haven and hang out and enjoy each others company since we have not been all together in a long time . Not ordering from there before when a family member called to tell them we were nine people and to get basic information she was told "the servings of food are for one person only" With that in mind she ended up ordering 4 orders of all dishes thinking 1 order for 2 people since they said 1 order for one person. (Most restaurant portions serve 3-4 per order when sharing. We ordered apps/soups/ribs/ and mains. When the food arrived in bags and bags we were shocked to see how much food came. They completely oversold us as one order serves at least 4/5 people and in most cases for the entrees one order would have been more then enough since had so many apps. We must have asked at least 5 times are you sure 1 order per person? They were abrupt and they clearly did not want to advise us at all. For nine people we ended up with 18 orders of food. Everytime we asked "this seems like a lo of food" t their answer was 1 person for 1 portion. Shame on them.. And the food was way under par from the way it used to be... Very disappointed in their lack of integrity. Shame on us for listening to them but Shame on them for their lack of help and guidance and patience. In the long run they now lost a group of customers.

Great food and reasonable prices

By 678pegs |

Fun "piggy" decor adds to the charm of this Manhattan restaurant. The place is small and the furnishings nice but basic; the food is great. We had a group of six and found that two appetizers and four main dishes fed us perfectly. They offer both brown and white rice which is a nice touch. The menu includes plenty of unusual and interesting dishes, as well as some old favorites, but isn't overwhelming. They offer a moderate amount and do it well. Some dishes are marked as spicy in the menu; we found these to be spicy enough to be interesting but not too hot, even for the members of our group who don't like spicy food. The staff was friendly and attentive but also unobtrusive. We would visit again!

Return Visit

By reservelamasondu2016 |

Hadn't been here for quite a while. My wife and I stopped in recently for a weeknight dinner. Food and service were excellent as always. And as usual, Nancy stopped by to check on us and chat. We crystal shrimp dumplings accompanied by hot saki and ice cold Tsingtao beer., BBQ pork butt and roast duck. All fabulous.

Been fantastic for 30 years

By ljm122 |

I have been going to Pig Heaven for 30 years and they still serve some of the best Chinese food I have ever had. The ribs of course of excellent - they are a must have. But there is a lot more than that. The scallion pancakes are always hot and crispy. Something nice to go with this are the cold sesame noodles - always perfectly prepared. This time we had moo shoo pork, orange chicen, shrimp with ginger and scallions and string beans with pork schewan style for our entrees. They were all fantastic. If you want really good Chinese I recommend Pig Heaven over either some overpriced midtown restaurant or the long hike to Chinatown where I always worry about hygiene.

A treasure

Had a delightful lunch at this restaurant. Authentic Chinese food in generous portions. Friendly staff. Please to recommend this restaurant.

Nancy Lee's Pig Heaven Restaurant: Best Chinese Ribs, Food

By SRTS44 |

Pig Heaven is exactly that: the Chinese ribs here are simply the best, juiciest and most satisfying ribs that I have had. I want to be clear that these are "Chinese-style" ribs, meaning they are deeply marinated and baked/smoked and come out a lacquered, deep candy red. This is not a regular Texas or Kansas city BBQ joint. This is a Chinese restaurant that specializes in pork and excellent Chinese food. BTW: the Mu Shu pork, which comes already rolled to your table (no need to "build your own") with fantastic plum sauce. I love this restaurant and could happy eat here every day--the food is excellent, the ribs are world-class and the service and full bar are tops as well. Enjoy

Amazing

By luvnlife6267 |

This is by far the best Chinese food we have ever had!! But what really sets this place apart is the staff. Everyone is an absolute delight. Nancy the owner was warm and personable. I felt like we were regulars. Please make this place your go to for Chinese.

Expensive Chinese food

By nycresident92 |

The restaurant re-opened on the upper east side and previously had a good reputation before it closed. The new place has small tables tightly packed. The menu has many choices but at prices higher than other restaurants that I frequent in the neighborhood. The pork ribs were very thin with little meat, spicy dumplings were not too spicy, the portion lo mein was small and the general tzo chicken was adequate. Was happy with the service at the table as we received a great deal of attention. Can't speak for the rest of the menu but will go back to other local places for now.

In Heaven at Pig Heaven!

Food and service was excellent. Friendly and accommodating staff. I would return and highly recommend.

New Owner

By William H |

Our go-to UES Chinese food place changed owners and staff at the end of the summer. Just ordered delivery, and the food (cold noodles, sweet & sour pork, pan fried noodles, dry sauteed string beans) was terrible--literally inedible. We are done with them.

Great ribs

By WrenDada |

We went here for lunch and ordered the BBQ Spare ribs, fried pork rice, steamed dim sum and pekinese style pork. Everything was really tasty and well cooked, but the ribs were simply amazing! They melted into your mouth! Awesome. The bbq was also great, we could have eaten a dozen of them. The rice was really nice, as were the dim sum and the pekinese pork.

Best Chinese on Upper East

By Mile T |

Great atmosphere. Love going to hang out with Tina at the bar... great drinks. Nancy is the sweetest. Pork ribs are straight fire

Rockin' Ribs

By nycdeb |

What can I say about Pig Heaven other than get the spare ribs! OK, also get the Grand Marnier Shrimp. Nancy, the owner, is the only woman I know who has more pigs than I do - and both she and the staff are warm, friendly and accommodating. Everyone is greeted like an old friend and made to feel especially welcome. That can really set a place apart in a place like New York.

Take out no better than at the restaurant

By robcurtross |

I ordered home delivery from Pig Heaven Restaurant tonight. Service was 45 minutes from the time I called at 7:30, perfectly acceptable time for eight blocks in NYC. Unfortunately the food was really not very good. The corn soup did have some merit, with a very nice corn flavor, and good mouth feel. The egg drops were fresh. Hot and sour soup was barely edible; I added lots of hot mustard to give it a bit of taste. The ribs were very dry, all of them this time -- last August in the restaurant a couple were more moist. I can't tell what was wrong with their technique -- they were all dried out. The scallop dish had fresh scallops but the sauce was tasteless -- I rinsed it all off, washed the veggies and scallops, put them in a garlic sauce I made myself, and re-warmed the dish. Barely average, but the best I could do. Never again. I don't understand the high marks this place gets.

Good Chinese

By CathyOhio |

We ate at Pig Heaven on June 17, 2006. The owner was very welcoming and we would have had no problem getting a table at 6:30 even though I had made a reservation beforehand. One of the people in our party did not like Chinese food so she ordered the ribs. She did not like the ribs - I tried them and they were O.K., nothing special. However the other meals we ordered, especially the fried calamari, were very good.

Real good Chinese food

By R6908OYwilliams |

So I had a friend who ate here about 5 years ago before he moved to CA. He was in town and raves about their ribs. I’m not a picky eater and thought why not. Service and staff are great. Our waiter was quite the character with the jokes. We tried a bunch of different things from dumplings, ribs, general tso and drinks. It was all good. The place is large for parties and quiet enough that you don’t have to feel on top of everyone. We were only 2 and they pushed another table close to us to give more room for us. Prices were reasonable and overall a good choice for good Chinese food without going to a small take out place.

Family gathering

By B W |

Take out. Eat in or delivery this restaurant offers you some tasty choices. Dumpling are a very good choice.soups, specials, Fish Filets, poached chicken, wonton in Chile sauce, scallops, ribs, and my favorite Ants on a Tree. They offer noodles and rice, numerous vegetable dishes., shrimp, prawns, duck, and even a diet menu. Specials include soft shell crab, shredded beef, and flounder. Very popular with locals. Lunch specials as well.

Greasy and heavy

By worldview123 |

Pig heaven should be put on a spit and roasted The restaurant used to be solid but the food has deteriorated The spare ribs are greasy and fatty The dumplings are soggy and heavy The orange beef which used to be quite good are now too sweet Prices remain high but if the food was good I don't mind the hit The problem is that the food has deteriorated and the service is slow Stay way or eat w lower expectations

Good food but we were rushed

By eadler12 |

Nice to see Pig Heaven in a new location. The food is a cut above normal Chinese fare but the owner rushed us out on a recent Sunday evening telling us someone was waiting for a table. We are regular customers and this should not happen.

Worth A Visit

By Harvey M |

I started the meal off with delicious Shrimp Rolls (approx. $8) which was served as 9 pieces to an order (see my photo below). After that I had the Spare Ribs (approx. $15). I have had them many times before and they have always been very good. This time they were not served as hot as they should be. Either the waiter took too long to pick them up or the kitchen did not heat them enough. They were still good but not as good as in the past. There is an interesting photo on the wall of Woody Allen and the owner taken about two months ago.

Great find on a whim!

By sradmd |

After visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art, we wanted to get some dinner and checked out restaurants in the area through an app on our phones. We decided on one that was located on 83rd Street and while traveling to it found a parking spot on 3rd Avenue immediately in front of the "Pig Heaven" restaurant. The name provokes curiosity so we decided to forgo our original choice and have dinner at this establishment. Well, let me tell you, we made the right choice. Our food was delicious, the service superb and our host, Nancy, the owner, was friendly and delightful. Afterwards we found out the it is a highly rated Chinese restaurant on the Upper East Side. I'm glad we found it.

Great neighborhood Chinese food

Imagine being greeted by an owner who is actually thrilled to have you dining at their establishment. This is how your meal will start. The food comes out hot, and delicious. Must have the spare ribs!

Chinese (Shanghai) With A Hint Of Western Influence

By Louis Tsai (@louloubear_eats) |

I came here with a group of four friends for dinner and we had an awesome experience. First thoughts walking into the restaurant for the first time. It was very long with a ope space concept which I really appreciated. The place looked a little dated in my opinion but along the same spectrum there is also a lot of history in this restaurant. The service of the waiters and waitresses was all very accommodating. They paid a lot of attention to us making sure we had the best experience possible during our time dining there. They knew that because we had a very full table of food, they went the extra mile to take stuff from our table when it was finished. They had a lot of different dishes, some western influenced but mainly a Chinese Style menu. Now, onto our food and some of my personal favorites of the night: We had: - Deep Fried Brussel Sprouts: One of my favorite veggies of the night. I’m not one to really like Brussel sprouts because they could be a little bitter for my liking, but these were amazing! The hint of heat and the frying technique was outstanding and I would definitely recommend anyone to try it! - Popcorn Shrimp: Not a dish I would rave about. Personally I thought the dish was a little plain. Although the dish was well cooked, I did not reply like the breading of the shrimp, because it felt a little grainy and did not have a lot of the texture I preferred. - Sichuan Cold Noodles: I didn’t really like this dish because I felt like it could have been made better. Personally the noodles they used reminded me of spaghetti noodles tossed in chili oil and Sichuan peppers. The spice profile was there but the overall dish was not my favorite. - Shang Hai Soup Dumplings: These were delicious. I think for the area, this was exceptionally done. I think you can get better in another place but the flavor was there. I personally thought the soup dumpling skin was a little thick and there could be a little bit more soup/meat inside. - Steamed Fish Fillets w. Diced Peppers: This dish was definitely one of my favorites that night. The fish was steamed/boiled perfectly and the sauce & seasoning with the fish was great. I recommend eating it with rice because it would bring everything together. There was Sichuan peppers in it so it has a little bit of a numbing sensation but very minimal. We had someone in our group who did not like the numbing feeling when you eat Sichuan peppers but he loved this dish. - BBQ Spare Ribs: Easily one of my favorite dishes of the night. These Spare Ribs are very unique to the restaurant and a much have whenever you are here! If you have ever had Char Shiu (Chinese BBQ pork), this is exactly that except this is a spare rib. They had different sauces you can use to pair with the ribs but I think it is delicious on its own. I COULD EAT A WHOLE PLATE TO MYSELF! - Hotpot Beef w. Mixed Veggies: The perfect dish to kick off the cold weather. I thought this dish tasted great. I wish there was a little bit more heat in the soup to elevate the flavor of this dish and more slices of beef fillets. I think this would be a better dish with the fish instead of beef but that is a personal preference. - Dry Sautéd String Beans: This was a classic Chinese dish. Every Chinese restaurant I go to, I feel like there is a need for me to get the sting beans, because it is such a classic, you can tell how the rest of night will go after trying this because you can see if they overcooked the dish or you can see if they seasoned the dish perfectly or not. Overall, I liked the food and the service of this spot! I hope to see a little bit of updating inside to bring the restaurant to life while still maintaining the history of the space in the near future. If I am ever going to go to a restaurant in the future on the Upper East Side with a group of people, this would be my place to go. I would definitely recommend trying it and judging it for yourself whether you like it or not but if you are looking for something new to try, this is the perfect place to go. Love the mix of BBQ and Chinese Food We ordered a mix of bbq spare ribs, Moo Shu Pork,Scallion Pancakes and Hot * Sour Soup. All food was great. especially the very meaty ribs! Great, friendly service too and prices are reasonable too. The portions are good too, and we shared a lot!

Get to it before it closes

By Sully1953 |

Very sad news after some thirty years as an institution they are losing their lease. If you have never been to this restaurant then you have missed an iconic restaurant in the City. Run, don't walk to this place as it may not reopen elsewhere.

Good Pork Here

By Allan S |

Their Spare ribs are of legend. they use a special sauce and technique that keeps them wart from the average run of places. Although they are pretty expensive it is worth it. Forced to move from the second avenue location that are now at 3rd and 80 th street where I hope that they will stay. I personally like to eat at homes I am not sure of the serve in the new locate but was good before.

One Bullseye, One Off The Target Board

By Harvey M |

I had a delicious Spring Roll, presented in an unusual way (see my photo) to start my meal. My main course was very disappointing. I had the usually reliable elsewhere Shrimp with Lobster Sauce. The sauce was bland, unlike most lobster sauces elsewhere.

Pig Heaven for real

By LTSPIN |

The best spareribs on the planet! Big and thick and wonderful. They are so tasty you can't wait for the next bite. The restaurant is a little pricey but worth every penny. We also had a great shrimp dish in a tomato sauce that was fabulous. The shrimp were huge. Everything is a la carte and rice is extra. We can't wait to go again.

Nice authentic flavors!

By Marie O |

Peking Duck, very crispy and perfectly done. Pork buns and Pork Spare Ribs that were literally melt on your mouth. Just a few of the excellent dished we sampled. Glass noodles and Green Tea ice cream were less than stellar though. The place ia crazy busy, very noisy and not recommended for a quite night out!

Reliable Chinese on UES

By William F |

I've been to several of Manhattan's highly-recommended Chinese restaurants, and Pig Heaven is probably the only one of those that didn't leave me feeling slightly underwhelmed. I went expecting great spare ribs and that's what I got, plus more besides. Some menu items are better than others, but this is true at almost any restaurant, and I think a restaurant deserves to be judged most of all for what it strives to deliver - in this case high-quality ribs. Definitely worth the visit, but I suggest dining in rather than taking out. Their takeout is fine, but my wife and I both enjoyed our dine-in experience much more.

Worth a visit for the sesame beef!

By Nikki T |

I gave Pig Heaven a try after reading rave reviews about their spare ribs, so naturally, we tried the spare ribs and also the sesame beef. To be honest, the ribs were delicious but they were tough to eat, I was expecting them to fall off the bone after reading such wonderful reviews. The meal was saved by the sesame beef, it was absolutely delicious, probably the best Chinese dish I've ever had! A bold statement but both myself and my partner are still talking about it days later! The lady who runs the place Nancy was very friendly as were all the staff! Definitely worth a visit for the sesame beef!

Finest Spare Ribs anywhere

By David T |

Pig Heaven is a wonderful Chinese Restaurant that specializes in Pork dishes. Their Spare Ribs are unmatched - Big meaty, juicy and flavorful. Other dishes are also quite good. Their Dry-Cooked String beans are excellent. While some reviewers have complained that the food had gone downhill in recent months, I can state that the as of my most recent visit, the food is as good as ever and the Owner's attention and interest in her customers is most admirable.

Delicious Shrimp Dish

By Harvey M |

I had another good main course here. This time it was the Grand Marnier Shrimp ($24.95) that I had. The nine nice size shrimp have been dipped in an egg batter and have an excellent taste. It is served with brown or white rice. The sauce served lightly over the shrimp was quite nice but did not resemble Grand Marnier in its taste and had no noticeable alcoholic character. Just the same, I highly recommend them. See my photo below.

Dismal service

We’ve been going to pig heaven for years and enjoy the food. But last visit we encountered just awful service.

A great choice for a meal, that's not ordinary

By Gen1I |

Ate here with a business group last week, Nancy and the Staff were great, as were some of the other patrons who helped us decide which items to choose for our meal, it was a great choice for something out of the ordinary and also not priced out of line.

Pig Purgatory

By joetzu |

Disappointing. My wife ordered the hot and sour soup. It was not tasty. Rather bland. We ordered spring rolls. Hot , but very greasy. I ordered the Crispy Orange Chicken. The sauce was sweet and thick. The chicken pieces were small and crispy. But it was not anything exceptional. Almost like crispy chicken nuggets. The waiter asked if we wanted brown rice or white rice. We said brown, he brought white. Why ask? All in all, for our last night in the Big Apple it was a meal to forget. Not horrible, but certainly no better than the local Chinese chain restaurants back home.

good food, warm welcomes

I had the famous ribs and a pork-meat dish last night. It was lovely. The service was great and fast (almost no waiting at all). The bartender is super sweet. The wine choices is good. The staff there are all very helpful. Overall, a lovely place

Love it!

By Jonathan Wung |

Was recommended by a friend who stays in NYC. The boss, lily, is a taiwanese and she is super friendly and we all loved her company. The food was also very good! The ribs was amazing, and also the fried taiwanese tofu. The tangerine beef and chicken brocolli were great too. I'd definitely come back here again for the food.

Best Ribs in US

By Barboo83 |

The pineapple fried rice is amazing. I saw this restaurant on the Travel channel. They were rated as having the best Pork ribs in the country. I had to try it for myself and it is true. The ribs are awesome. They have a honey glaze on them that is to die for! Great restaurant!

Good but pricey

By Skeetdt |

Yes the spare ribs are good- $16.95 ++ is too pricey At $6.50 the roast pork buns are worth it. The Martinis were expensive, but good sized. New location; open, modern & roomy for NYC

I love all the Pigs

By Stylelust |

When you walk in and see all the little pigs all over Pig Heaven you start smiling and the smile stays all through dinner. Ribs are terrific. Enjoy and take friends as you will order and enjoy more than you should!

Overpriced

By KPI |

Managed to walk in here on a saturday night with no problem getting a table - this is when the alarm bells should have rung. Yes the food was tasty and a varied menu, but as are most asian restaurants around the area, for value for money i thought this place was not on par with competition. Expensive wine, place looked like someones living room, whole restaurant needs a good sharpening.

go for the ribs!

By midniterambler |

saw this restaurant on the travel channel show on barbecue, so had to try it on recent trip to nyc. ribs were the meatiest i've ever had and came off the bone easily, but the sauce was not distinctive. the other dishes- steamed dumplings, chicken + peanuts were average. the chicken dish was indicated as spicy but wasn't. the service was very good in general, however the evening was somewhat spoiled by a rowdy group of 6 at the next table, who had too much to drink, and who apparently are regulars.. the ownership appeared reluctant to rein them in. nancy, the owner, is very personable, and makes it a point to visit each table and greet her customers. overall, the ribs were the highlight, but i found the food bland.
