Very good food, cute restaurant!

By Erin_leigh79 |

Hubby and I went here on a Saturday night for an early dinner since we had tickets for a show. It's a small restaurant with maybe a dozen tables. Service was nice. We had the polenta with blood sausage for a starter, which I thought was adequately seasoned, but hubby thought it needed salt (which he never thinks about food). I had the pasta with chorizo and ricotta, which was okay. It wasn't anything special. Hubby had the short rib which was definitely the best of the three dishes we tried. He finished the plate. At the end of the meal the manager brought over two glasses and I think some prosecco since it was my bday, but we don't drink. Nice gesture and too bad we couldn't take him up on it. I think we'd try this place again if in the area.

Can't believe this has anything to do with Argentina

By comfytravel |

A small place, modern stylish decor, unusually high chairs and tables. The menu is quite short. Sometimes it's good, but not here. Calamari was OK, but overpriced for the quantity of the real thing. Blood sausage - unusual, though not a lot of it. One would expect great meat at an Argentinian place, right? We had a hanger steak, and it had no taste whatsoever. Wine was a problem, too. It's hard to find a bad Argentinian Malbec in a regular wine store. We rejected two bottles before we selected a barely acceptable one. It never happened to me before, and the bottle was priced FIVE TIMES what it cost in retail.

Great find for a delicious lunch

By Debbie S |

We were walking the High Line and decided to detour for lunch around Chelsea. We happened upon this little, charming place and decided to give it a try. The food was fresh and well prepared. Just the right amount for lunch, that didn't way you down for an afternoon of exploring. Staff was very nice, too.

Friendly staff, delicious food, wine and beer.

By Resort561299 |

Nice cozy small restaurant with friendly staff. Generous portions, delicious food and organic wine. Good selection of beers. Highly recommended!

A new "must visit" in Chelsea with Argentinean-Italian food with good atmosphaere

By Danishviking |

After visiting the High Line, we felt hungry and having heard about this promising new place, we tried it out and it was amazing. First I wondered if we should keep this place as a secret, but then again.... The restaurant is cosy and you feel at home, lovely music and relaxed atmospheare. And you really feel that the people working there love their job and know what thay are talking about. They certainly know their wines too and were excellent in pairing the wine to the food or vice versa. Pan seared scallops were perfectly cooked! The rib eye was wonderful. We will absolutely we back here next time we fly in from Europe. Can't wait to be back... And not to forget the cocktails!

Mi gusto mucho

They went out of their way to prepare a special meal and beverages. The filet mignon was exceptional and the empanadas were delghtful. The food was prepared with panache. Well worth it.

Small Argentinian restaurant

By Randy S |

Traditional Argentinian cuisine in a small neighborhood restaurant. This is not an Argentinian Steakhouse. Nothing fancy but awesome service, quality food, and great wines.

Average at best

By AFPT |

Nice locale and friendly service, but the food was mediocre (we came out of there wondering if they have a professional chef in the kitchen). The Milanesa was made with a veal cutlet that was too thick on one side, and since it had not been fried, but simply put in the oven, it turned out rubbery, with the breading separating from the meat. The Cerdo was tough and not savory enough. The orecchiette with pesto were the best thing we had, but certainly nothing memorable.

mom's special day

it's a very small place but cozy.. the food was great everything we tried was delicious.. the staff was friendly and service was prompt. the owner came to our table greeted us and said Happy Mothers Day. Complements to the chef well done we will be back

Interesting and a bit different...in a good way!

By Trumpets |

Small, quaint place in Manhattan. We were seated right away by a very friendly hostess! We ordered the empanadas, (one of each of the three kinds they had), and shared them. They were very good! A bit expensive, but good. Then, I got a lomito completo sandwich which had sliced beef, a fried egg and some vegetables in it. It was tasty, and big enough for me to have to take half of it home! My buddy got a chicken sandwich and he also enjoyed it. The place got pretty full and a bit noisy by the time we finished, but if in the area I would probably go back.

Terrible service

By DecoWorldTraveler |

Worst expresso I ever had and more expensive than in most places in nyc. Service was awkward and cold. They kept looking at me like I was going to run away without paying. Empanadas were decent

Don't judge a book...

By James A |

We found this per chance last year and now two in a row on consecutive visits to NYC...maybe a trend. The atmosphere is spot on...not any bigger than intimate requires, but enough of a crowd to create a good vibe. The menu is original and well executed. The attentiveness of the staff is its best asset and will probably take us back again.

Neighborhood gem

By Joe C |

Small place, very loud. Service is attentive and efficient but not friendly. Food from beginning to end was excellent! Large portions, too. Selective wine list at ~2.5x retail, which is reasonable. I can recommend.

Interesting Menu

By Larry I |

This quaint restaurant has about 10 tables and another few seats at the bar. Service is friendly, informative and efficient. There is a full bar and a good choice of wines. The menu has choices from soup to salads to empanadas to more traditional fare. I had the Malbec braised short rib with roasted potato and corn cake. The short rib was tender and tasty but the Malbec seemed slightly burned. Then corn cake was infused with cheese and delicious. The roasted potato was undercooked and hard.

Great!!!

By Natalia F |

Simply great! I had the filet and it melted in my mouth. My husband had the rib eye and the sauce was so good!! it was all good!! The wine was paired perfectly and the dessert was AMAZING! It was a passion fruit dessert and the waitress highly recommended it. I was so thankful that she did. Relax and enjoy, this was my favorite eatery this trip to New York.

Great food - relax a little

By Haukur |

Friday night, not too busy and very nice atmosphere. The food was excellent, one of the better steaks my wife has ever tasted. As in any other NYC place the service was extremely fast, not giving you time to enjoy the moment. Every time I put down my fork the waiter was looking over my shoulder to see if I was done or not. Relax a little :)

Avocado Flan!

By Fleichter |

Great atmosphere and service. Nice selection of Argentine specialties, though the fish not the beef are the treats. Tops are the service and the deserts. Do not miss the avocado Flan.

Gem in Chelsea.

By hoolie7 |

Visited Porteno on a recommendation, which can be iffy. But this restaurant delivers in quality, service and ambiance, the trifecta of what I look for. It is my new favorite in the city and is not to be missed. The food is thoughtful, perfectly prepared and delicious. The service is just lovely, and the place is small (it is New York after all..) but comfortable and homey chic. Just a great meal with well paired wine and great service.

A true gem!

By Nancy K |

We have visited this excellent restaurant three times now - and it is so good. Small place with seating for maybe 30 plus a few at the bar. Great service and an excellent menu which changes from time to time. Tonight our party had the Wild Mushroom Risotto, 14 oz. ribeye and the Short Ribs - all were fantastic!

Great find in chelsea

By Edward R |

Was looking for a fun new spot for me and my daughter to eat. Read several reviews of this trendy Chelsea Resturant and decided to give it a try. The Resturant is very small and lively. The staff is attentive and made our dinner experience very enjoyable. The octopus salad was too notch. My rib eye was a bit under cooked but absolutely delicious. My daughter ordered the mushroom and bone marrow risotto which was also excellent. I would rate the Resturant and overall a 4.5 but since that is not an option I gave them a 4 5 being reserved for a rare few. I will definitely return to this Resturant again.

Buenos Aires in NYC

By Jayne M |

Everything about Porteno is wonderful. We arrived before opening time on a very hot late afternoon - no problem - we were promptly invited inside for a glass of ice water and a refreshing cocktail. Having been to Buenos Aires many times we knew we wanted to start with empanadas and they did not disappoint. Our entree of noquis de calabaza (pumpkin gnocchi) was even more delicious. Light gnocci with tasty vegetables in a lemon garlic butter sauce. Perfecto! We had plans for dessert later that night but couldn't pass up the avocado flan - beyond words - and the almost as good bread pudding with dulce de leche gelato. Will definitely return to Porteno. The staff was very pleasant and the restroom (NY closet size) was immaculate. Porteno is in a neighborhood I am not too familiar with but it is close to the High Line and FIT.

Recommended Argentine restaurant in Chelsea

By Sergio |

Very good food. The Milanese is not fried. It was exquisite. The grilled chicken is a delight and the flan for dessert is the perfect ending.

Cosy place for lunch

Very nice small restaurant nearby High Line. Staff was friendly, atmosphere cosy and food tasty. I recommend.

Back again ... this is such a great little bistro

Excellent food, excellent service. It is obvious that the management is actively involved and really cares about the customer experience.

Loved the atmosphere !! Staff super friendly and attentive to details. Couldn't expect better taste! Try the polenta !!! You will not regret !

Pleasant spot

By ljshorey |

I had been to this restaurant in October for lunch and wanted to go there with my husband on this trip to NYC. We walked here from 54th and 6th Avenue, arriving about 6PM. We were the first table of the evening but the restaurant soon filled. The food is Italian with a South American overtures. The wines were mostly South American and we had an excellent, and reasonably priced, Malbec. The pastas we chose were good, but we were not impressed by the empandas. That, however, was my fault for not remembering that empandas are deepfried. The service was very good. We'll return.

Brilliant ribeye

By RobbNevadaCity |

After lining up for everything in theater district it was a real pleasure to get peace, a 16 oz ribeye to die for, and a bottle of the best Malbec I've ever had. Steps away from Highline Park , so very handy for walking lunch off.

Our best meal in New York

By Sdwoo |

We had a few recommendations while visiting and this was our best meal of the visit. We had booked a table for five. Initially we had a table for four with an extra chair, but the manager brought us an extra table as they weren't full. We started with some cocktails. I had a dark rum and ginger beer one, served in a copper mug which was delicious. We shared some starters. Not being a seafood lover I found the empanadas to be the best, but the octopus was actually OK too. For my main meal I went for the short rib in Malbec sauce. The meat was so tender, the sauce very strong. I loved the grilled butternut squash, but have had much better corn cake, this was too lumpy and fell apart. The rib eye was well received. We had a bottle a Malbec between us. I didn't have a dessert, but tried someone else's bread pudding. Wow, lovely. The pear tart was enjoyed too. The manager brought us some dessert wine on the house, which along with my espresso, finished off my dining experience perfectly. The staff had been very attentive and the price was not bad give what we had consumed. This will be a fond memory of our trip.

Exquisite

By Gregory N |

Although it's highly recommended that you get a reservation with this restaurant me and my girlfriend still found seats at the window of this intimate setting of a place. The service is more then what I expected with the waiters and waitresses trying to accommodate me and my girlfriend to our every needs. The setting was romantic and small so get ready to be close to your spouse or friend that you plan on taking there. And the cuisine will send your taste buds on a journey through Argentina that you never would have expected. I had a classic pork chop paired with a simple purée and lemon soaked broccoli and a side of home pressed mash potatoes. The picture of it speaks for it self at the attention of detail that under went in the kitchen. And let's not forget that as me and my love left the restaurant and were already on the side walk heading to our hotel one the waiters made it a point to come outside and thank us for visiting. Now that's someone that goes out of there way to please you. I highly recommend coming here at night and you can believe I'll be returning with more friends and family to enjoy this restaurant.

Amazing food, very friendly attendance, warm atmosphere

By BethPeixoto |

I've been to the restaurant with friends and we had the opportunity to enjoy together amazing vieras, the best meet we have ever tasted, delicious, soft, unforgettable!! We had a nice argentinian wine and attendance was very friendly and efficient. Great experience!!!

Delicious appetizers and tasty food

By Amy E |

My husband and I decided to go to this restaurant before our broadway play. It was a great decision. For appetizers, we ordered their 3 empanadas. The beef was my favorite and my husband really enjoyed the caprese one. Super flavorful and fresh. We also ordered the morcilla over polenta. I could have just eaten the polenta and been happy it was that good. For entrees we got the steak milanesa and the short ribs. Both had good flavor and were seasoned well. Dessert was a pear tart, beautiful presentation but slightly lacking in pear flavor.

Love’s moment

Very good adress, the food was very tasty. The chief work hard to make a nice result. We came at evening and the service was nice

One of our Fave NYC Dinners!

By kmacbeth |

We went to Portena before a show. Liked the menu prior and the items we selected from the menu were so good! Empenadas, Grilled Veggies, Pumpkin Gnocchi and Malbec Braised Short Rib were absolutely amazing! Definitely get a reservation if prime time - restaurant is small, but great atmosphere. I would definitely go again!

Unpretentious Little Argentinean Bistro

By Vacationphobic |

This is one of those city finds that you hope not too many other people discover. I was brought there by a Brazilian friend who happens to work nearby in the fashion district. This little restaurant has an intimacy that really is rare in New York these days. The food is well-prepared, presented and priced. I love this place for getting together with friends one hasn't seen in a while. You can really talk. Our server was kind of quirky and adorable and made the evening feel like we'd been invited into a friend of a friend's home. Maybe that's the Argentinean culture coming through?

Fantastic!

By Joe M |

What a great restaurant! Food is top notch - from the empanadas appetizers to the main course (steaks are everything you'd expect from an Argentine restaurant) to the homemade desserts. The space is not big but it adds to the charm. Service was very warm and attentive, if not the most precise. Can't wait to go back!!

Nice small resto with good food

By vingar123 |

We took a step down from the Highline walk to have a bite for lunch. Porteno offers a nice choice of small and medium plates to accommodate these needs. With a friendly service and a nice wines our lunch was a good one

Good food for Going Solo in Chelsea

By CambridgeBen |

I'd flown in from the UK and needed some much need carbs to hit the jetlag. I booked a table at 6 and walked through the piles of snow from the big dump in Jan 2016. Porteno didn;t disappoint. I had the special Scallops for starters followed by the spaghetti carbonarra. Quite a bit of cream but that's what I needed! I was quite happy sitting in a corner, reading my book. It worked very well.

Underwhelming

By Helen K |

Unfortunately the food wasn't great. The staff were very friendly and atmosphere was great... however, the risotto was bland and overcooked. The beef rib was cooked well (at some point) as it was falling off the bone but unfortunately my whole dish came out luke warm and it was also bland. The waitress did ask if food was okay, but at that point we only had a few spoons of the risotto and it was hard to complain given we just didn't like it. Disappointing. Hopefully it was just an off night in the kitchen.

My Favorite Meal in NYC

By mapes24 |

As their name indicates, Porteño (a term commonly used to describe people from the port-city of Buenos Aires) is focused on providing New Yorkers with a uniquely Argentinian dining experience. As dining in Buenos Aires and consumption of juicy steaks go hand in hand, it shouldn’t have been a surprise to find that this small restaurant, located on 10th Ave in West Chelsea would become home to my favorite steak-dining experiences in New York City. Though the Malbec-braised short ribs that I tasted was also excellent, the ribeye (Bife de Costilla) quite easily stole the show. In my 11 years living in New York, I had yet to experience the foodie-trinity of Flavor, Portion and Price. Most restaurants in the City would have one or maaaaybe two of those areas covered, but would always fall short on the third. Porteño was the first that offered all three. It’s notable when a restaurant provides such an amazing steak, but the experience becomes something truly memorable when each part of your meal comes together in such a cohesive fashion. There was such a finely tuned balance to my meal, which allowed me to truly appreciate the contribution of each flavor profile on the table. The steak was cooked perfectly, the light acidity in the kale salad acted as a perfect counter-point, and the subtle tone of the Malbec helped to bring out the flavors of the entire meal. Top it off with some classic desserts (the Avocado Custard was my fave), and there was no way I could walk out without a huge grin on my face. Though people may have differing experiences based on what they order, I find myself lucky to have come across a meal that so succinctly hit upon everything I look for in a excellent meal! Kudos to the chef, owners and staff for providing me with one of my favorite dining experiences in NYC!

Good atmosphere

By Susan2350 |

We had the empanadas for appetizers, short ribs and cod fish for entrees. The chimichurri sauce on the cod was sort of skimpy, so you might ask for a little more of that if you order it to give it more of a kick. The corn cake with the short ribs was very good. You can take the 7 subway to the last stop (Hudson Yards) and walk from there and see all the new construction happening in that area en route. The lighting was on the dim side.

Good menu, friendly staff

By Nick D |

Dined here before seeing a nearby show and enjoyed a great steak and some delicious Malbec wine. A combination Italian and Argentina menu with a variety of options and a good spread of prices. Very friendly staff and a nice vibe. Good bar to dine at for solo travelers.

More than just fine wine and steaks

By Sheels2209 |

A delicious meal at an intimate venue surrounded by fabulously friendly patrons and staff. Renowned for steaks and Malbec (which our table enjoyed), I had a delicious Niçoise salad that I would go back for, yes really.

I'll be back . . .

Excellent creative food well prepared with attentive and friendly service from the owners and a nice selection of wines by the glass. The restaurant is on the small side with the bar and tables in one room - very casual, vary warm atmosphere.

A Bit of Buenos Aires in N.Y.

By Tony C |

We were looking for a new place to dine in my neighborhood and discovered Porteno as a result of a web search. We visited Buenos Aires several years ago so the advertised Argentinian cuisine was the draw. Went there on 11/15/12 but the place was full so yes, do make reservations. It's a small place and does fill up fast. Went back the next night with reservations for 4 and found it to be a friendly, reasonably priced restaurant serving delicious well-prepared food. The wait staff was pleasant and Jorge, one of the owners, was a friendly gracious host. There were some rather loud diners near us for the first half of our meal, but luckily there was no loud music blaring in the restaurant and I commend Jorge for not subjecting us to that torture. We had a sampling of starter plates: Polenta Porteno (polenta with blood sausage meat): interesting dish but may be an acquired taste for some, two types of empanadas (beef; spinach w/manchego): tasty morsels inside a delicate puff-pastry, and the octopus salad special, which was SUPERB! I try to have octopus whenever I see it on the menu but all too frequently it is either chewy, slimy, fishy or all of the above. This was tender and grilled to perfection and not fishy tasting at all - even those at our table who are usually not fond of octopus found it delightful. For entrees diners at our table had the ribeye (bife de costilla), grilled tender steak served with a kale and bean salad (one of the two diners found the kale too crispy-raw, the other enjoyed it). Another diner had Milanese, breaded and fried and also tender and tasty, and I had the rolled flank steak (metambrito), a braciole-like dish that melted in your mouth and was my favorite (yes, I did taste all the other entrees). Wine was a bottle of Argentinian Chardonnay which was ok and a bottle of malbec which was a smooth pleasant wine. Both were in the $30 range. We tried two desserts: avocado custard (flan de palta), light and delicate, and bread pudding with dulce de leche gelato (budin de pan), which I found not to be the perfect choice after a steak dinner as it is a bit on the heavy side. Overall a delightful dining experience.

Pleasant atmosphere, good food and a staff of real "portenos" (from the port city of Buenos Aires. Great steak, prompt service.

Nice dinner

By Milonguero |

Went with my wife for dinner while visiting New York. We decided to make reservations although we weren't expecting it to be full on a Monday night. Fortunately we did or we wouldn't had found a table. The place is small but charming and well decorated. Service was very good. Our waitress was very attentive and had a great attitude. The food was original, well presented and tasty. Prices were moderate for NYC. Overall, it was a great experience and would return next time in NYC.

Very nice & will go back

By patentesquire |

Had lunch with business associate just the two of us. We shared a calamari app, which was really great, had fresh tomatoes and avocado drizzled in light oil but the main star was fresh calamari. Not deep fried, fresh grilled in a bowl. Nice start. Also had a few baguette slices and a roll each, everything was fresh. My associate had pasta special which was ravioli with light oil and cheese sauce, he liked it very much. I had salmon with Couscous on side which was very nice for lunch entree. It would have been a bit on the small side for dinner but for lunch it was quite nice. We both had wines off the menu, and I liked the varied selections of wines especially the Malbec offerings, will have to retry again on another occasion. I would recommend, we were given nice attention by Paula and her colleague Salsa, Both were quite pleasant and helpful. Again, I would go back & try dinner next time if possible.

Excellent!

Amazing ambience, food and drinks! You must try the morcilla The place will bring you down to Buenos Aires Argentina. This restaurant is a must if you are in manhattan!!!

Not bad, but not the best

By DaisCG |

Very intimate vibe and great wine list. The empanadas were good, but I felt that they came out cold. The steak was okay, but not bad. Overall, not bad, but not the best.

Solid Neighborhood Spot

By USCKaboom |

I’d walked by Porteno a few times and was looking forward to trying it. It’s a cute spot and friendly staff. The food was solid but not particularly special. The empanadas were nice. And the kale salad was pretty good. The squid was very bland. I enjoyed my fish dish. Reasonably priced.

All round great restaurant & staff

By Oceanliner75 |

I've been to Porteno about 9 times now after coming across it on a walk near the Highline - I live in NYC for many years now & its becoming very difficult to find a decent restaurant w/ good food & staff - Porteno fits quite nicely. I've had everything from dinner to just drinks and dessert. The salad w/ steak is great along w/ the empenadas as someone else mentioned. I like the different pastas offered & the pear tart was a great winter treat. They really do try to please and deliver quite nicely. And it has a fun atmosphere w/ a great view of the Empire State Building. I do hope people support this restaurant - we need more like it in Manhattan.

Lovely little Argentinian Spot

By darylqu |

My husband and I wandered into Porteno on Saturday, April 6, 2013. We had no reservation and we were seated immediately, though the restaurant rapidly filled. The food was excellent. My husband had a steak and I had the daily special, a Cod dish. Excellent, delicious. We benefitted from the excellent advice given by our waitress who took time to ask what we liked, what we were in the mood for and accomodated us nicely. The portions were generous (I couldn't finish). We accompanied our meal with a lovely wine, an Argentinian Malbec from the very adequate wine list. For dessert we shared a delicious creme brulee. The service was attentive and congenial. If we find ourselves back on the west side we will definitely stop in again.

A Must-Go in NYC

By WhyVonneM |

I was just recently in NYC for a visit and stayed at the Hotel Americano. Porteno was just around the corner from the hotel so I walked past it several times. We were heading out to a show at 8pm on a Saturday and wanted a good meal before. We thought we would try Porteno since it looked cute and was so close. I am so glad we did! It was one of the best meals we've had in a long time and not overpriced, for once! We started with the octopus salad appetizer special, then shared the Malbec-braised short rib with corn cake and roasted potatoes and risotto with wild mushrooms, bone marrow and sage for dinner, finished with the panna cotta special for dessert. I would go back in a hot-second!

5 stars all around

By nick297 |

Inviting atmosphere, extensive menu, delicious food and a friendly, accommodating staff (we called to let them know we were running about 15 minutes late for our reservation and they had no problem seating us immediately when we got there). We were there for a concert at MSG and now find ourselves looking for a reason to go back to the city (we live about 90 minutes away) just so we can return.

Such a special place

By nicole z |

We're going to Argentina soon and wanted to find an Argentinian restaurant. I called to make a reservation but they were booked until 10 pm so I hung up. I called back to make reservation at 10 but the owner George said he'll try to squeeze us in at 8 (time I originally wanted). From there I had a nice feeling. My husband gets there first and they called him by his first name and were so kind. I got there and I received the same warm feeling. We sat at bar and had Brent as our bartender. We were started with some champagne on the house. I then couldn't decide on a Malbec wine, so Brent gave me a sample of the 4 different kinds- wicked generous. Besides the beginning experience which was such a delight, here's how the food tasted: Apps: 3 empanadas- all delicious and baked! Grilled Calamari- tender, tasty and nice portion Blood Sausage- husband liked it. I ate the polenta which was quite yummy. Main: Sea Bass for me- sweet, flakey, crisp and very flavorful 12 0Z Steak for husband- cooked perfectly and he very much loved it Dessert: Bread pudding w/ dolce de leche ice cream- sinfully delectable We had beers, wine and even the bread was a nice treat. What an experience. Made us want to go to Argentina even more. We will be back soon. Spectacular experience. You feel like its home there.

Delightful Experience

By Charles P |

I highly recommend Porteno for authentic gourmet Argentinian cuisine. The restaurant is small, which makes for an intimate experience - may not be good for a large group. The service was excellent, and the waitress provided recommendations which were outstanding. In addition to helping us with our order, her cheerful demeanor fit in well with the hospitable atmosphere of the whole experience. From the before dinner cocktails thru dessert each course was excellent, with a variety of choices that seemed truly authentic. I would definitely try to return upon my next visit to NYC.

Great for lunch.

By Jean-Yves Girard |

Stopped by yesterday for lunch. We sat at the bar. Had the kale empanada, calamares and lomito completo sandwich. Everything was so good. The food was fresh and nicely flavored. Our waitress (owner?) was so nice and friendly. Will definitely go back. Excellent food and service.

Good atmosphere, relaxing with nice people

Selected to meet a Friend, booked for 07:15 pm and the table wasn't ready but they offered a drink and appetizer whilst we been waiting for the table. Eventually the food was excellent, we had calamari, lamb, salmon, delivered on a timely manner with a smile.

outstanding experience

I agree with all the reviewers who describe Porteno as a neighborhood gem. The proprietor is very friendly, the food is authentic & delicious, the wine list is excellent, and the atmosphere is cozy and warm. We'll be back.

This place is excellent in every way. Ambiance, staff, food. Came here for my birthday and they made it incredibly special. Recommend everybody come here.

Went back and loved it even more....

Invited friends for dinner in New York and went back to Porteño.... Had the most amazing meal, and the best octopus ever! I think I found my new favorite spot in New York - and in the heart of the new hip Chelsea....

Mighty fine dinner.

We stopped in on our trip to Manhattan. Had the hanger steak special, grilled shrimp appetizer, cheese and meat and an empanada. Everything was excellent and the waitstaff did a wonderful job of making us welcome and comfortable. I would highly recommend this restaurant.

Graet Neighbourhood find

By sharonduncalf |

What a great find. Small, neighbourhood restaurant with terrific food and wonderful buzzy ambience. Often Argtinian menas steak and ore steak. Not here. Eclectic menu to suit all tastes

HAS POTENTIAL

By VoyagerFour |

This neighborhood in NYC is continuing to evolve and more restaurants are starting to move in. PORTENO is a small, friendly place with comfortable homey atmosphere. However, the food is just mediocre at best and a little pricey. The breaded chicken entre tasted like a re heated frozen packaged dinner. The prime rib was better but its marbling bordered on just plain fatty. For now, I would pass on this place and give it a little more time to bring up the food factor.

My Favorite Neighborhood Spot

By Joseph S |

This is one of the nicest little places that you could easily walk past. We have been going there since it opened and have never been disappointed. The house cocktails are always unique good. The food is fresh and reminds me of being in Buenos Aires. Always has a good choice for Malbec. You cannot beat the personalized service. It is small and the staff is always paying attention. One of our favorites on Friday nigh.

Thoroughly enjoyable lunch

By Bonnie871 |

We ended up here yesterday for lunch by default - there was a long wait at the restaurant we had originally chosen. So glad the other place didn't have room for us. The food was delicious, the atmosphere bright and pleasant and attentive service with a smile. Great place to eat if you have to be in the Hudson Yards area or are walking the High Line.

Fair Tastes, Crowded and Busy Servers

By YacchanAmarone |

I had a dinner with my wife and friends. When we arrived at the restaurant, the restaurant was already crowded, and our table for four guests were a bit small and near the entrance, which made me a bit nervous. We ordered grilled small shrimps, ham & cheese and polenta for shared appetizer. The ham was not so tasty comparing to the branded hams such as Prosciutto and Parma. The polenta which I had been looking forward to was a bit disappointing for its less sticky. I ordered a grilled steak and the taste was fair, rather the fat tasted cheap. The servers were busy and they often stayed around the kitchen area which was a bit far from our table. As a result, it took a bit long time just to order the meals and drinks. Also, the waitress who was in charge of our table was not so friendly. I am not sure if I will come back to this restaurant in the future.

Good Argentinian

Had a lovely dinner here with friends. Good location. Cosy atmosphere. Friends had steak which looked great. I had a steak sandwich, equally delicious. Good service.

Best meal all week!

By Sarah H |

This was without a doubt the best meal my family and I had all week whilst in NYC. The menu had a good choice, the food was so yummy and the staff were very friendly and helpful in recommending meals and wines. Everything within our 3 course dinner complimented each other really well thanks to the waitresses suggestions. The cheese & meat board was unbelievable with homemade bread and chutney. A very warm and friendly restaurant.. a definite must for any visitor to New York!

Delicious, warm environment, authentic

Really loved Porteno. Nice vibe. Easy to get a reservation. DELICIOUS DESSERT and solid cocktails. A unique twist on the standard American-Argentine fair in the city. Not just steaks and empanadas.

Great lunch meal with many great gluten free options

By Pembrae |

We walked along the High Line and stopped here for lunch. Very friendly service and an excellent menu. Food was absolutely delicious and served quickly too. Menu is marked up for gluten free, which always makes life easier for gluten intolerance. Would highly recommend.

Love this place!

By Paul D |

We visit this spot every time we come to the city. Ther kale salad is unique and flavorful. Our favorite dishes include the salmon and the penne con vegetales. The Argentinian Malbec is great with any of the meals. The service is very attentive and friendly. Enjoy a great dinner at this hidden treasure in Chelsea.

Reasonable Argentinian restaurant in Manhattan

By Jussara Nunes P |

I went to this restaurant with my husband and daughter after going to a nearby theatre for a performance of the "Sleep no more". It was one option of restaurant open after 22:00 and near to the theatre to go for dinner after the performance. The place is small and cozy and they have a friendly staff. It was not bad, but it was not good either. They didn't have the dish one of us chose. So, changing to another dish, the steak , the other dishes and dessert were just ok.

Warm and Friendly Find

Came across this little gem while walking through the city. We had a very nice meal with creative salads and delicious appetizers.

Good quality, fine tasting food with a nice ambiance and solid service

By manu_sarna |

My gnocchi with lamb was excellent - some of the best I've had. While small, the restaurant has a well-stocked bar (18 yr old Macallan etc.) and the service was highly attentive. It feels like these guys are pioneering - just round the corner from some of the small commercial galleries and you can head up to the Hi Line.

Taste of South America

By fresew |

Wow. This was my first visit to the Chelsea area of New York and had no idea where to eat. Having just returned form the Dominican Republic I had a taste for something different. We were walking along the street and noticed Porteno, an Argentine restaurant. First off, we were greeted with a warm and friendly welcome. Who spoke beautiful Spanish. We chose to sit at the bar as it was busy with the lunch crowd which had no effect of the fantastic service. The food was exquisite, great presentation, filled with tantalizing flavor. I ordered: SALPICÓN DE AVE CON QUESO DE CABRA 16 GF Shredded chicken breast, romaine lettuce, mixed greens, golden & red beets, goat cheese, cherry tomatoes with lemon-olive-oil dressing. This was a great meal and a great place. We actually went back the very next day! Highly recommend!!

Excellent

They took the time to care even for a single. Recommended the right things and all without any rush. Plus an amazing environment.

We stumbled upon a gem!

Happened to end up here after arriving in NYC late Friday night & looking for somewhere to grab a bite. Serendipity! The food was delicious, the staff super friendly, the drinks were superb and we loved finishing off our meal with the taste of moscato

Excellent Dinner

By Jrbsmom166 |

My group really enjoyed our dinner here. The food was tasty, portions generous and the staff was lovely. The cod fish dish and steak Milaneasa were standouts and generous.. The chocolate mousse cake was fantastic (not usually my thing, but this one was yummy).

Small portions, weird service

By pizzatooth |

I went to this restaurant based on the numerous positive reviews on this and other websites, but came away disappointed. For one thing, the portions (at least for entrees) were borderline microscopic. I had actually scouted some of the dishes that people had posted on the internet, and the sea bass looked awesome: big and crispy, and served alongside a generous helping of zucchini and mushrooms. What I got was a 2 X 3 X 2 square that was so small it fit right on top of the also-small 4-inch circle of vegetables placed underneath it. Absolutely tiny. The fish was moist, not crispy, which is fine by me, but it was criminally underseasoned and I had to salt it (the salt shakers have big holes, however, so watch out). The vegetables meanwhile were just ordinary (good but not five-star good). For appetizers, we shared the grilled octopus (probably the best thing we had all night) and three tiny empanadas. For $10.50, the restaurant could probably do a bit better than three small, lightly-filled pastries, but hey - hungriness was kind of a theme here. That said, the dessert portions were actually normal sized, but were nothing to rave about taste-wise. My bread pudding with ice cream was pretty good, but the chocolate mousse cake had a strange consistency that made it simultaneously implode and fall apart after one bite. Another thing that was a little off about this place was the service. After two of us (including me) ordered fish, the waitress oddly tried to dissuade us from our choices. "It is very small," she said, making a small circle with her fingers. This leads me to a series of questions: What is the point of having the sea bass on your menu if your waiters have to caution patrons about ordering it? Why not just bump up the price a bit, add some more fish, and do away with the warnings? Finally, do your waiters issue warnings for every person who orders the sea bass, or just for people who, uh, need some extra help getting full? (If the latter, I am deeply offended). Anyways, despite the waitress' best efforts, I ended up sticking with the sea bass. Though the 12 oz rib-eye tempted me, I didn't feel like eating beef on this particular evening, though apparently that's the thing to get at Porteño if you don't want to walk away hungry. Oh well; I guess she had a point.

So Nice!

By SMR-LWN |

Friendly staff, Nice food! We booked a table and were 5 minutes early, our table wasn't ready and the boss offered us a free glass of prosseco. The service was great and the food delicious! The boss is super friendly.

Good food! Great server. Worth of money. Little pricey but it's all good. This place must visit.....

A little Gem of a find

By Lou R |

Had a lovely dinner here last night. Very last minute. A friend told us to give it a try as we were looking around our neighborhood for a impromtu (late) dinner. There are about 12 tables, that are beautifully made. The bar is fairly large for a place of this size. It is just the right amount of darkness to make it calm and romantic. Larger menu than I expected. Thoughtful. The prices are spot on for the area. We had 1 Empanada and 1 Scallop appetizer. Empanada was good and Scallops were nicely cooked. Not amazing but solid. The Entrees were fantastic: Bacalao Con Quinoa Y Lentejas: Seared Cod (perfectly) with a basil tarragon sauce with a red pepper-quinoa-lentle-zucchini salad, of sorts (delish) and scallped potatoes that were just right. Large cut of fish that was fresh and tender. Ensalada de Salmon: Pan seared Salmon, string beans, black olives, hard eggs, grape tomato and a lemon-oregano vinaigrette. Simple and lovely. Great find and now a "go to" place for us in Chelsea.

A very pleasant surprise!

By Robert S |

On our way to a night of jazz in Chelsea we decided to find a restaurant by walking the neighbourhood. We chose Porteño and found the food, the ambiance, the service and the attitude all to be excellent. Would go again, no question! The shaved brussels sprout salad was of particular note, especially when I thought that in didn't like brussels sprouts!

A Great Disappointment

By David S |

When coming into the restaurant we were impressed by the surroundings, small but very pleasant. We were immediately visited by a attentive server. She announced the specials and my colleague ordered a branzino and I ordered the rack of lamb from her pronouncements. While we waited for our meal we were served some stale rolls and some olive oil. After one bite we each put our rolls back in the basket. Finally after an over 15 minute wait our dishes arrived. We looked at each other in shock. They were both the size of appetizers. I had ordered the lamb to be medium rare. It was definitely medium well and tough. Unfortunately we were on a tight schedule and I had to eat it as served. I have never seen a smaller baby lamb chop. This was an absolute infant lamb chop. Although there was a double bone the portion was totally much too small. My colleague felt the branzino was totally flavorless. The server had not included the prices in her presentation. We were totally shocked to receive a bill of a little over $ 78.00 for a meal that left us very hungry. Luckily we found when we got to the meeting that we were going to that there was a very generous and delicious buffet. I would absolutely not recommend going to this restaurant.

Chelsea Gem

By LoRy |

Four of us dined here early (5:30pm) on a Monday eve. The restaurant has about 12 tables and only 2 were taken. We were promptly seated and offered drinks and menus. The waitstaff was charming and efficient. Service was excellent. We (3 of us) ordered the Rigatoni with sausage and spicy tomato sauce ($17); 1 of us ordered the Lomita Completo sandwich ($20). Our entrees were very good, but a little expensive for smaller portion size. Except for the sandwich, there was less pasta than you'd expect in a nice restaurant. This is the reason for not rating a 5. If I could've given a 4.5, I would've have. We were mostly full after eating every morsel, plus 2 baskets of there yummy bread. I assume they expect everyone orders apps and that's why the entrees were a little smaller. We were in a hurry to attend a show so we didn't order drinks, apps or coctails. This was a very nice restaurant and I'd definitely recommend others try it.

Fantastic food and service in this small intimate restaurant. Very tasty and tender rib-eye steak can be reccomended.

Delicious

By nadro2010 |

This was the 1st time we ate Argentine cuisine and it was spectacular. I had the Codfish and it was a treat. The portions are just right. The place is cozy and clean, the staff was courteous, professional, and polite. My wife had a mix of veggies. She has the grilled veggies and the Quinoa. She was very happy we that selection. Friends of ours had the ravioli and the carbonara and it was great. Manhattan priced 20-30$ per plate. Small cozy place with about 8 tables. We'll worth it. We will be back.

Good Food, Good Service

By Joe L |

Small Argentine restaurant ion Chelsea. This place is small, make sure that you call for reservations. Service was great. My wife daughter and I had 8pm reservations on a Saturday evening. We were seated quickly and drink orders were taken immediately. We ordered a salad, grilled calamari, empanada and wood fired calamari to share as appetizers. My wife and daughter shared a skirt steak plate, and I had the special, rack of lamb for dinner. We most definitely gone without one of the appetizers. I am a big eater and I could not finish my dinner. Food was hot and good. Service was good. Price is to be expected downtown. I would go again.

WOW

By elyse-gk |

It was just delicious! There are no other words. In this tiny crowded restaurant is the food worth 6 stars and the service is great.

Fine find!

After exiting the Highline, we stumbled upon this unassuming restaurant which proved to be our good luck! The food was excellent: very good side salad, salmon, quinoa with squash and zucchini and unique quinoa salad! The staff was friendly and attentive.

Small intimate casual setting with good food & busy

By Evelynne G |

Four of us went here for dinner. They serve Argentinian food. The server was delightful & explained the dishes we could understand The menu is quite casual but the food was good There is reasonable parking too. We managed to get a spot in front

Excelente.

By bklynbubba |

We arrived a bit early for our reservation which was not a problem, but could have been had we been late as the place filled up quickly. It's not a very big room, which is a plus, as the atmosphere is intimate and relaxing, and you can actually talk to each other without screaming. Our server, Guido, was attentive and pleasant, as were his coworkers who all kept an eye on us and took care of everything. The bartender is outstanding, and makes the best Manhattans I've ever had in Manhattan, which is really saying something! The mark of a great Argentine restaurant is if they cook your steak the way you request it, and their chef got that right on both of our orders. The empanadas were also delicious. They have a decent wine list with several Malbecs on it, which always makes me happy. All in all a wonderful dinner experience and I will not hesitate to come back.

Great food and atmosphere

By Victoria |

Came across this restaurant online and liked the sound of the menu so decided to give it a go. On arrival we were greeted by a friendly waitress who enthusiastically sold us the specials - the chargrilled octopus special starter and the seabass special main were both delicious and portion sizes were good. Great laid back atmosphere and if I wasn't only in New York for a week I would definitely go again.

Cozy atmosphere and great food

By Kristian2013 |

The restaurant is small but cosy. It's easy to have a conversation, service is friendly and attentive and, most importantly, the food is delicious. We'll be back for sure.

Mostly great experience.

By HR1230 |

The food at this restaurant was very good. I had the steak, and sadly this was the only problem. I asked for it medium rare, and got rare instead. I didn't mind, and proceeded to chow down, but the steak was VERY tough, almost impossible to actually bite through. This was disappointing because the steak was actually very well seasoned and the salad which accompanied it was also very tasty, although the combination was a bit strange. Also, the cutting boards that the steak is served on just do not work. The cutting board, plus a slightly slippery table meant that cutting through the already tough meat became a herculean challenge at times. The drinks were another spot where Porteno just gets it right. My girlfriend, who despises whiskey (to put it kindly,) absolutely loved the "Biabo" that I ordered. Anyone who can get her to drink whiskey must be a sorcerer. Absolutely no complaints about the desserts. Just one bit of advice: do not leave this restaurant without trying the bread pudding dessert! Easily one of the best things I have ever had the pleasure of tasting. One final head's up, being that I went here after Christmas, I was trying to use a TD Bank Visa gift card that I had been given, but the restaurant wouldn't take it even though there was more than enough money to cover the bill. Nothing too bad, just something to know.

Good Find

By Kpuccia |

My wife and friends of ours went to see Sleep No More and found this quaint restaurant nearby. The owner (I believe) was very friendly and inviting. We were shown to our table and we had a lovely waitress named Natalia who was just as nice. As a matter of fact the whole staff in this charming place was nice and friendly and made you feel real welcome. We ordered our drinks and perused the menu. Natalia was very especially helpful when it came time to ordering giving recommendations that were spot on. Our table mates both had the filet Mignon and my wife and I had the salmon. Both were good choices. The filet was tender and cooked as asked. The salmon was moist and flavorful and came with a quinoa and vegetable side. Dessert was equally as good. The creme brulee, bread pudding and peach tart were delicious and made a perfect meal that much better. If you are ever in Chelsea I highly recommend you visit Porteno. Not only will you have a great meal but you will leave feeling as though you were treated like family.

Steak tough and flavorless

By L3Nola |

Some of our food was decent, but some wasn't up to our expectations. If I'm spending $150 for dinner for two, the food needs to be great. The atmosphere here is nice, and the servers were attentive, but when I have to sign a check with a feeling of disappointment in the quality of my food, those other things don't matter.

Intimate evening meal

By Ian P |

Fantastic little Argentinian restaurant in the Chelsea area. I'd recommend reserving a table (you can do this online) as it is a very small place. Definitely worth a visit. The staff, service, food and drink were all top notch!

Pricey

By LCO |

A nice restaurant with a rather good cuisine despite a limited choice, but simply for the price requested one would expect a better service, a better table, more space ... details which rightly allow a higher value.

Out of the Way Romantic Spot

By Brunswick1977 |

Great date spot. It's a bit of a walk from any train on a cold wintery night, but what great place isn't. The food, service and ambiance was perfect. We shared small plates. The 3 empanadas were flaky, the pate was smooth and the kale was perfectly dressed. The scallops were good, but much smaller than we imagined. The veggie sandwich was perfect. If you could only chose one dish, we recommend the veggie sandwich. The veggies were plentiful. The bread held all the ingredients just so and didn't spill out the other end. Typically we don't order bread pudding, but we had to try it because of the dolce de leche ice cream. This place is tiny, so call and make a reservation. It can get a bit loud. It did on our visit, because there were 2 people at a table who's inside voices were at yelling volume. The servers were all attentive. It helped that the room was small. You'll fall in love in this place or at least with Porteno.

Once might be enough

By steve w |

Porteno is in a great location; right next to an exit from the Highline, on a block on 10th Ave. without many nice restaurants. Friendly efficient service, nice wine list, and a nice atmosphere. The empanadas were fantastic. But the pasta I ate was average and the meat dish my wife had was dry and bland.

Great go to place in NYC

By MarkVoto |

We have been to Porteno many times. Whenever we are in the area this is our stop. Very intimate setting. The tables are hand made and the decor is above average. I always go with the servers suggestion and I have never had anything less than a great meal.

Sleep No More

By Nancy L |

My husband and I recently found this charming little Argentinian restaurant. We explained to the waitress, who was from Buenos Aires, that we were seeing Sleep No More and we were seated immediately. The pork chop was excellent and my husband had the Milanesa primavera, which was delicious and presented beautifully. The service was excellent, we had a great meal and plenty of time to enjoy the play. We will definitely be back.

Great Little Place

Cozy restaurant with great food. Service was impeccable. Varied entrees. The grilled vegetables and salmon selections were delicious and desserts were great. All selections were pleasing to look at. Good GF selections.

Hidden treasure in NYC

By Ehad2 |

Finding a great restaurant in NYC at a reasonable price is not easy. Porteño meets the bill. The pros are friendly staff, good food, intimate setting, reasonable prices. The cons are noise level can be high, and empanadas. A cauliflower special starter was amazing.

Great cocktails and food

By edelweiss40 |

We came here for dinner on Memorial Day weekend. We had reservations and it's a good thing we did. Place is tiny and was packed. Cocktails were great ($16), food was very good. We had empanadas (3 for $13), grilled vegetables, a salad and rigatoni with Argentinian sausage. The rigatoni was the only thing that didn't wow us. Service was top notch. Our server was very friendly and let us take our time, ordering one dish at a time, so we could see how full we were after each.

What a great find!

By Le Grand Fromag... H |

We felt like a good steak and of course our first thought was to look for an Argentine restaurant. Happily there was one near our hotel in Chelsea ---but believe me we would go again, no matter the area we are staying! This is a little gem, not yet discovered. Unassuming no white table cloth place, but did it give us a delightful evening! First off, we went at 10 pm, and no one batted an eyelash, of course to an Argentine, this is the hour to dine. We shared a delicious salad of grilled calamari, avocado, grape tomato with lemon vinegrette, and then one of us had the rib eye steak oh my god it was perfect! ---and the other had matambritos, which were a work of art and also tasty. The rib eye came with a kale and cabbage salad , healthy and yummy. For dessert we had calabaza with lime gelato, excellent. Nice staff, eager to make our experience great, and it was. Only one suggestion---why not play some Argentine music, too? The music was too jarring for us, a Narcotango would have added to the otherwise perfect experience. Oh and the wine was great, good list of Argentine at reasonable prices, our meal with a bottle of wine cost about $100.

A surprise in the area

By traveljandkstyle |

Great atmosphere. Small and cozy. The lunch sandwiches are great. The soup of the day, butternut squash, was excellent. The servers were pleasant and made sure I was satisfied. Can't wait to go again.

An Amazingly Wonderful Restaurant!

By pugmom61 |

What a great dinner we had here on Saturday! The atmosphere is relaxed and intimate. The wait staff was wonderful, non-intrusive and most importantly they did not rush us. The meal itself was amazing. We started with the Empanadas. They were all truly delicious - try them all. I had the kale salad and my husband had the calamari salad. My salad was by far one of the best salads I have had. The dressing was light and lemony and was a perfect dressing for the kale and pecorino cheese. For an entree I ordered the braised short rib and my husband had the striped bass. The portions were large and each entree was perfectly prepared. My short ribs came with a wonderful sauce and 2 sides. The glass of wine I picked to accompany short rib was perfect. We ended with the bread pudding and cappuccinos. The bread pudding was very good but I would definitely try something different next time (I am partial to chocolate). We will definitely be back here.

Perfecto!

By akawonderlust |

The website showed they had morcilla (I love morcilla!) but when we got there it was not on the menu. BUT they had some and let me us order it. So good! The Lomito tasted like Argetina. Wait staff were friendly!

Couldn't be better

By andytherav |

We joined some friends for a nice dinner. We didn't really expect it to be exceptional. It was. It was a modern Argentine restaurant, with a very sophisticated palate. The restaurant was small, so I would definitely recommend reservations. To begin with, the service was superb. The young server, who took our order was friendly, knowledgeable about the food and ready when she was needed. There were six in our party. Everybody was happy with their food, That was six different entrees and six happy customers. The deserts were also delicious and the price was fair.

Great Charred Octopus

By sicboy |

The service and food were fantastic in this small place. Good wine and desert (bread pudding) but the charred octopus on salad appetizer may be my new favorite thing ever. Empanadas were fantastic as well (try all three). We will return next time we are in NYC!

Cozy atmosphere but average food

By intrepidgirlLondon |

We had dinner at the bar...very nice barman, wine selection was decent and a good price point. Had a tasty cocktail. The lomo sandwich was tasty (though strange bread choice for this) while the breaded cutlet was below average with a lot of grisly bits. The coating was also too thick. So the two dishes balanced out to be average. We had a nice evening but I think for almost $200 for two with tip the food should be much better.

An Argentinian Restaurant that is more than beef

By vaquero viajero |

We went to Porteno while on a visit to NYC and based on tripadvisor reviews. We were not disappointed. The food was excellent and the service cordial and efficient. I have been to Argentina and based on that trip I was expecting piles of beef but I was pleasantly surprised with a varied menu and lots of vegetables. The cafe is small and intimate and the owner is muy amable. We will be back on our next visit to the city.

Good food, cozy restaurant

By cst0ne |

We wanted a restaurant close to the Hudson Yards Mall and Porteno is a few blocks away. The staff was very nice and the drinks were good and the food was flavorful and the portions were a nice size. I would visit again if we were in this part of the city and would definitely recommend.

We went to this resto for

By Anastasia T |

We went to this resto for dinner with friends as it has good reviews and ranking on google. I really liked the atmosphère: small place, not too many tables, nice music which is not too loud. Service: Very nice and friendly, but 2 things i didnt like: 1. I had to wait at the bar for 20min as my friends were running late, the lady couldn’t sit me while our table was perfectly empty. I find it absolutely rude towards the customer. 2. When asked what is the origin of the meat the lady told us ‘it comes from the cow’....em, ok...she had to check it with the chef. I was expecting the meat to be from Argentine in the argentinian resto, but it was not the case. Food: unfortunately quite underwhelming. We took burrata and then filet with some spinach on the side. Meat was ok, but came medium rare while we asked well done Price: 300$ for 3 people + tip, i find it a bit overpriced Overall i would suggest you to go to steakhouse if you want meat, you will pay the same for better food

GREAT RIB EYE STEAK

3 of us came here for lunch and we all chose rib eye steak. It was absolutely fantastic and very reasonably priced. We enjoyed the ambiance of this small restaurant. Very charming

Would give more than 5 stars if possible.

This place is amazing. Had a wonderful dinner. The food is really good, the Empanadas are Fantastic, the Beef was great and the dessert was out of this world. And the cherry on the cake, the service. Sasa and Josu did an amazing job. Thanks a lot guys.

Delicious Chelsea Neighborhood Restaurant

By Nancy D |

I enjoyed this small friendly neighborhood restaurant with my friend. We booked ahead and when our table was not ready we were offered a glass of Prosecco. (Too bad I don't like the stuff!) the restaurant is a bit noisy. The food we ate was very good. The salmon was yummy and my friend enjoyed his Filet Mignon. Bread pudding dessert was delicious. Wait staff was very nice. Worth the visit.

Great Neighborhood Restaurant

By TravelerJohn48 |

We enjoyed this restaurant as it was far away from the tourists and had wonderful Argentinean food. Our server was from Argentina as was a large table of diners. So, yes, it is authentic. The atmosphere is very casual and comfortable. The food was excellent. The wine list was average at best. A great change of pace when visiting NYC.

You definitely need to eat here if you're in the area

By TrptPlyr30 |

Absolutely great place to go before a night out on the town. We stopped here on the way to attend "Sleep No More", which is close by. But this place is also near some Jazz clubs and other places of interest. Great food, fantastic/friendly owner (we met his lovely wife, too), really excellent bar service (we sat at the bar and had a great time chatting with the bartender)...and I'll say it again, EXCELLENT food.

Friendly Chelsea Neighborhood Restaurant

By JulioGM |

This cozy, wood-paneled restaurant near the High Line is as friendly as they come, and the reasonably priced "New Argentine" cuisine is surprisingly delicious. Start with luscious empanadas, Argentine pastry turnovers that here come filled with beef, cheese and cured meats, or, my fave, mozzarella cheese, tomatoes, black olives and basil, a twist on a Caprese salad that you won't soon forget. Hearty eaters will enjoy the Lomito Completo, a traditional Argentine sandwich boasting thinly sliced filet mignon, ham, fried egg, cheese, lettuce and tomato on a ciabatta bun.

Good Argentine Place

By Andrew S |

Not, perhaps, as exclusively Argentine as places such as Buenos Aires in the East Village, but terrific steak and top-notch empanadas. A bit cramped, but friendly and attentive service.

Best Empanadas

By mb2242014 |

We went here prior to going to sleep no more and it was the highlight of the evening by far. Wish we had eaten here twice that night and not gone to sleep no more. Great food, particularly the empanadas, very good reasonably priced wine list too. Highly recommend

B.A. in NYC

By BMB65 |

This place is perfect to take a wife or girlfriend. It's laid out nicely so that everyone isn't on top of each other. The staff is very friendly, greeting return customers like old friends. The grilled octopus had just the right amount of char and the lomo was perfect. Couldn't ask for much more.

Great lunch

By Kristopher C |

Lunch was fantastic. Light and well prepared. Good flavor and fairly good service. Will definitely return next time I'm in New York

One of the best.

By VictorG2 |

This restaurant is by far the best of it kind. The chipa guazu with the short rib is like traveling Baco in time when my mom used to cook. I recommend this place. One of the most authentic Argentinian food you could have in New York City. The wine list is great. Get the bottle ins rad of the glass of wine.

A yummy stop in the city

We were looking for a celebratory lunch and happened on this little place. The menu had a nice variety and all of our food was very tasty. We had good service and was definitely worth the stop. Try the pumpkin pasta!

Grilled Vegetable Plate Best I ever had

By Joan C |

We thoroughly enjoyed a pleasant lunch hour at this small restaurant. The best grilled vegetable plate I ever had, beautiful to look at the delicious. The service was also excellent and every table was filled. I would definitely go back for the great variety on the menu too. Prices were reasonable.

We highly recommend this restaurant if you're in this neighbourhood. The food was delicious and full of flavour. We had two glasses of different red wines and both were fantastic. The staff were friendly and attentive.

medium steak that looks more like well done

By YM2000 |

This is an Argentinian restaurant, and at least my Argentinian friend had a lot of good things to say about it. Well, I expected to get great meats, but was highly disappointed to get a steak that should have been medium, look much more like well done. Asked to redo the order as a Medium-Rare and got what it should be. Overall the other dishes where fine, but not great.

friendly staff great dinner

By jmeyersforeman |

we spent a wonderful evening, the staff was wonderful. We started withthe Pate and Cheese plate. both wonderful. The main course of fillet was perfectly cook steak, served with mashed potatoes and green beans. Dessert of Creme Brûlée was big enough to share with our cappuccino topped off the perfect dinner. The place was busy, we would recommend reservations.

Best restaurant around I will highly recommend it to my peers. Food and drinks were great and was very affordable for being in the city.

Outstanding Argentinian Restaurant

By ThomasP682 |

Located just off the Highline, this is a jewel in NYC. It's very small so make reservations. The food is wonderful as is the wine. We had a group of eight, I had the filet of sole which was fabulous. Everyone enjoyed their meals and the atmosphere is exciting. The small bar was filled all night. The owners and servers are very friendly and knowledgeable and all eight meals were brought out together, perfectly prepared. It's a must go to in lower Manhattan.

Empanada tasting

By JoAnn Canning |

Delighted to find an Argentinian restaurant in my neighborhood after living near Salta for more than a year. Of course it won't compare to eating at the Estancia Penaflor or with Enrique at the Finca Sayta or being up in Las Zanjas with gauchos and eating beef straight off the hoof. So, I decided to just test the empanadas tonight. The Jujena empanada was perfect, the Sanjuanina juicy, but the Saltena was a little disappointing (meat too clumpy, not enough egg). The pastry was light and crispy. But, maybe I am holding them to too high a standard?? The restaurant is small and staff friendly and warm. Got to go back to try the ensalada de quinoa...and the flan de palta. Will let you know.....

Amazing dinner

By James M |

After a long afternoon hiking around the village, soho and the meatpacking district, we found ourselves at the northern end of the Highline looking for a place for dinner. We found this place because of all the great reviews on tripadvisor and we were NOT disappointed. It was only a few minutes' walk from the end of the Highline in Chelsea. The decor and lighting were warm and inviting and the food was delicious, inventive, fresh cuisine with great wine to match. Although we were tired and weary from all our walking the amazing service immediately turned around our night and put us in a good mood. If you are in this area and looking for a nice place to eat with world class food that's also got a relaxed vibe - this is it!

Passable at best... don't get what everyone else is raving about

By Grandpuba007 |

Meal was... passable, but certainly nothing special and the service was lacking. Both missing "the little things" that make a meal special. Salad was over dressed, when I asked for a different side dish to my pork chop (trying to do low carb) they refused anything but a side salad, they jammed a big group table right up against our own even though the restaurant was half-empty, food all lacked a bit of extra "oomph" with spice or sour notes and/or texture, dishes for my wife and I didn't come out together so we ended up eating kinda like a relay race (she had her ap, then I had mine), so on, and so on. I've had far worse dining experiences too so I take this in perspective, but there are many many better options in the area.

Great Argentinian Cuisine

Went with an Argentinian business colleague and had steak dishes. Never had this type of food before and it was very good.

Delightful, delicious, personal

An Argentine couple apparently operates this cozy little Argentine bistro. This is my second visit. Well selected novel wines, well crafted dishes, and excellent service. This will not be my last visit.

Everything was great

All the empanadas were great, can't fault anything we ordered. The Dulce de leche icecream with the bread pudding was the best. I found the cold avocado soup a little bland, but service and everything else made up for it.

Loved Argentinean style seafood!

We stumbled on Porteno after walking the High Line and decided to try them for lunch. It's a wonderful intimate cafe that rapidly filled up after we had ordered our meal.my husband had calamari salad and I had a grilled octopus salad that was washed down with wonderful Argentinean white wines. The service was excellent and the serving sizes were just right, and not overwhelming. I would be happy to go again!

Simple and broad choice, courteous service, and well-cooked authentic food:

14 of us went there to celebrate our finishing the NYRR 2013 marathon! The earlier run had opened our appetite for proteins ... I made the booking from overseas already before leaving for NY, based on my desire for argentinian, a central Manhattan location, and positive trip advisor comments. When we arrived at 7 pm, two tables were dressed next to each other (as expected), and the staff was very welcoming. The menu included flavory Argentinian specialties. I personally went for grilled octopus and bife de costilla (the menu seems to have changed since - which is imo another good point). Both dishes were perfectly cooked. My friends were appreciative of their dishes too. The wine list was also offering a simple broad and diverse wine list. I wasn't too happy with my choice (Magnum of Clos de los Siete) but I'm sure there are better ones on the list (e.g. the Arboleda from Chile). In all cases I can only recommend this place which has the right atmosphere, good service and food at the right price.

Just OK

By Bigboy1959 |

Many of the previous reviews are much too generous in their comments about this restaurant, it is ok but not a dining experience or memorable! It is small intimate and basic, with many tables packed into a tight space. The food is good and tasty but the portion size is disappointing. The starter of calamares was possibly the best plate, delicious taste with a unique flavour. The ribs were a fabulous flavour but only 2oz of meat, the rest was bone!! A decent wine list but over-priced, way ... over-priced! We rated it 6/10. $207 for lunch, two people with a decent bottle of Malbec! It is expensive for basic street stuff.

Great but what about the gnocchi

By Rob T |

We called in here before going to a show at the McKittrick Theater. Great little find. Pleasant service, vibrant ambience, standard cocktail list etc. The empanadas, meat and cheese were fantastic and frankly probably all we needed. So we certainly didn't need and nor could we eat the raw, doughy gnocchi that turned up as a sharing plate. Perhaps the chef forgot to cook them. They were also served in something akin to a vinaigrette which also fell short of the mark. I'd be interested to hear if others had a similar experience but I'm afraid it costs the place its fourth star and I very very rarely give 5 stars.

Great lunch on all fronts

Great food, friendly service, good wine, what more can you ask for? Came based on other reviews and was not disappointed!

Great little restaurant

We got a seat at the bar, last minute and everything was great. The bartender was helpful and made some great suggestions.
