Best indian food I've had.

By Lahoj |

Went to this "hole in the wall" place. It was recommend by students. The food is excellent. I had the saag and the squash sabji. I will definitely go back. It is very inexpensive. A meal for 5-7$.

Don’t miss this gritty lower east side gem!

One of my favorite spots! Authentic and affordable. CASH ONLY! This spot has prepped Punjabi food—you have tons of mains and sides to choose from. Comes with rice. Can get a small bowl or large plate. I had two mains and rice in a small bowl with a large Poland Springs water for nine dollars. Great dessert section too. Most people take their food to go, but I stayed in. They have a counter space and a couple stools. The flavors are amazing and the spice is a flavor bomb in your mouth. Staff/owners all so nice. Always busy with brown people and locals, so you know it’s good—but not so packed there is a long wait. Don’t miss out on this place. They don’t make ‘em like this anymore.

Great Tea in a tiny spot.

The best Indian tea. People should always try this place. They also have snacks which are very amazing. Their veggie food box is below 10$. That is a steal.

Freakin Awesome

I saw many taxi drivers stopping here for a quick break and that's usually a reliable indicator of great value for money for you food. Well, it definitely was this time. This was simply the best meal I've had in NYC. The food is simply great, fantastic flavours but not overwhelming and - last but not least - prices are as ridiculous as the portions. You can actually get a small (which is really large) bowl of rice with two sides for 4$ or a big (i.e. enormous) bowl with three sides for 6$. The big one is enough to fill you belly for two meals. The sides are displayed in numbered baking trays with no name tag attached, you just pick them by the number. Of course you can ask the staff about the ingredients, they're very friendly and eager to help customers, but feel adventurous and pick randomly, you won't be disappointed! I didn't mention that the food served here is vegetarian, you're advised. The place is very small to eat in, just a table in the back and a small counter, and it's located in a semi-basement - pay attention or you're gonna miss it! Overall, the surprising highlight of my NY food experience. If only I weren't living on the other side of the Atlantic I'd eat here day in, day out!

super cheap and absolutely delicious

Great for late night refueling

By Tony Y |

This place is a staple in the East Village. It has always been a long time favorite for cab drivers but has gained popularity in recent years. Don't expect anything fancy, it's no frills good eating. Come into this hole in the wall spot on Houston street and choose your combo. Small is 2 sides and rice. Large is 3 sides and rice. I'll be honest, I just pointed at the glass window at the ones that looked the most appealing. Your food is either placed in a paper bowl or paper plate then microwave. Everything is vegetarian. You can take it to go but given the vessel, it's just more convenient to eat there. Again, there's nothing fancy about this place. Your options are limited but it's quick, cheap, delicious, and hearty enough to line your stomach for more drinking.

Watch your wallet at this place!!

We order a combo with 2 Roti and 2 sides. We also ordered 2 Gulub Jamin ($1 each???). We get back home to Jersey and find they had completely ripped us off!!! We were missing one of the sides which is basically half the meal. Just tried to call and no one picked up. Not driving back and spending $20+ on tolls and gas and time to puck up a $3 side. They were not busy so I can assume they did it on purpose. Rip off!!!

Indian bliss

Went here for a late night snack, and I wanted to go back as soon as I woke up to get more! I LOVE Indian food - and they do it so well! The staff is friendly and accommodating to the late night customers. Don't let the plastic bowls and microwave fool you - the food is homemade and delicious. A great place for a cheap meal, or an Indian craving!

Tasty food, incredible value, wonderful friendly staff!

What a find. A small doorway and shabby looking sign, but inside you'll find a selection of 8 or 9 different vegetarian dishes, with samosas and breads too. So cheap for a big plate, with 3 dishes and rice. I'll be packing lunch from here and at least a few dinners a week. Lovely man served me, very happy and friendly.

Just go here.

I love this place, and I always make sure that I go every time I visit New York. It's so popular and it's no surprise why. The food is great, the staff are fun and it's open 24 hours a day. Perfect for a late night snack. And the food is sooo cheap. Just make sure that you go.

great food, no frills, real NYC experience

Great place to come for no-frills, cheap and good Indian food. Open 24 hours so it's great for those late night tandoori missions. This is not a place for "fancy" Indian food but prices are great and the food is good.

Authentic Punjabi khana!

By TajMahalPrincess |

Open 24-7! You can tell the food is cooked with love! Very comforting home cooked food. My husband & I came across this grocery via YouTube, decided to check it out as we were missing home cooked Punjabi food. We ordered kala Chana, chawal, sabazi, aloo tikki, kheer, pani, & chai all under $17. Very good price! We left full. Chai is unique taste, very good. Small, narrow store, not much counter space to eat, however, we went on off time so lucky for us lunch time hadn't started. Enjoyed eating lunch while listening to Kirtan in background. I highly recommend Punjabi Grocery!

Great Find during an East Village Walk ... and History Too ... !

By BrianCassey |

... was walking around the East Village / Lower East Side, Manhattan on a previous NY visit (from Australia) when I noticed this almost 'hole in the wall' cafe/deli ... the bright green 'Punjabi' sign screaming out to all who cared to notice. Once drawn inside was hooked ... GREAT so genuine Indian vegetarian fare at ridiculously low prices ... AND a piece of history too. A bit of research showed that the 'Punjabi' has been catering to New York taxi drivers and East Siders 24 hours a day for decades. (There's several pieces on the history of the 'Punjabi' and NY's taxi drivers an easy search away.) Sadly, it appears ... for various reasons ... that the Punjabi's very existence is now threatened ... so ... do yourself a favour ... visit now, soak up the gritty atmosphere and enjoy the fabulous Indo veg cheap eats while you still can.

Great food. Great price.

Punjabi Grocery and Deli

One of the best places in NYC to get authentic delicious Indian food. The food is here is delicious and reminds of food my grandmother makes in India. The price is also extremely reasonable. It’s definitely worth visiting. Great food that is easy on the wallet.

This is one of the reasons to why I travel, to find these kinds of gems. Punjabi is open 24/7 and serves delicious food. Prices are cheap according to NYC rates. No seatings inside so most of the customers seems to go for takeaways. Also trying to be kind to the environment even if they still, like many other places, just dump all the trash in the same bin without any thoughts about recycling. America..
