Great speakeasy in the heart of mid-town

By Sean F |

I had heard amazing things about this place and had to see for myself. Let me tell ya, this place lives up to the hype. The Rains Law Room is a secret speakeasy you will definitely want to seek out. We arrived and put our name on the list. We waited about an hour, not bad for a party of 3 on a weekend. To ensure the wait was not longer, the hostess allowed us to hang in the back bar while we waited for our table. The drinks and atmosphere are as you would hope and expect. A throwback to a bygone era, drinks are delicious and potent, the environment was intimate. Service was prompt and on point. My wife and I seek out speakeasies all over the world and this is a must visit. The only issue we had was a drunk guy harassing/hitting on our 24 yr old daughter. He was clearly drunk and service should have been cut. He made our experience less than perfect. With that being said, as soon as I brought this to the attention of staff they watched us and stepped in immediately when he came back. I would absolutely visit The Rains Law Room again and encourage anyone to, do not let this prevent you from going. If you frequent bars/clubs this is bound to happen eventually. The prompt attention of the staff once I brought it to their attention was impressive. The staff really do care that you enjoy yourself. Please stop in, you won’t regret it!

Awesome speakeasy

Great place in Manhattan. Delicious cocktails. Great cocktail list. Lots to chose from. Nice seated area, nice semi-private areas and good bar area. Highly recommended.

An Amazing Way to See in the New Year

By Michelle M |

We chose to go to Raines Law Room for NYE '13 when we were in New York. We didn't fancy going somewhere crowded and loud and this place ticked all the boxes. They had a special package for drinks and canapes plus a live cross to Times Square for the countdown. It is difficult to find - make sure you have the street address! But so much fun. When we knocked the door was opened and a french doorman asked if he could help us (in an excellent, slightly suspicious speak-easy way). We gave him our names and he immediately let us in and took our coats (I love the whole New York coat room thing). We were taken to a table in the Parlour. This place is absolutely beautiful - I adored it. To get the waitress' attention you pull a small chain beside your table and within moments someone is there to serve you. They had a selection of cocktails for the night, we made sure we tried them all and they were all delicious. The place was not full, which was a shame (only because people would have missed out on a fantastic time!). Plenty of canapes were brought around which were also delicious. There was a large group hanging out in the 'Kitchen' with the bar staff but we preferred the elegant seated option. Just before midnight the doorman offered us all 'noise makers' and the waitress bought us all champagne - they then they crossed to the Times Square countdown. This was a perfect New Years Eve for me and it was a shame we didn't have time to come back again. I loved this place.

Cool Speakeasy

The Raines Law Room was a great find. We walked right past it the first time as it is down some stairs and you have to ring the door bell and get put on the list. We did have to wait for a table to open up, but it was worth the wait. The drinks are delicious and the service was great. The atmosphere is relaxed and cozy. I will definitely return to Raines Law Room.

A real find, but not geared to conversation

By JeepNYC |

Raines Law Room is one of the original speakeasy-type bars that became hugely popular in the last few years, and it's easy to see how it's remained so successful. Quirky but not ludicrously difficult entry, great atmosphere with people seated on comfortable sofas under low lights, good service from knowledgeable staff, and an excellent cocktail menu full of interesting creations. It's a great place to go for pre-dinner drinks or potentially to snuggle up late at night (I think it's open til about 5am). For older people like myself (at least, old compared with most of the late 20s that were there), there were a few details which would keep this from being a regular haunt. First, the tables only extend about a third of the length of the sofas, meaning you're forever stretching over to put your glass down. Second, the sofas themselves are deep (and comfortable) and although facing each other, are relatively far apart -- that, combined with music, meant it was very hard for our party to hear each other talk. Somewhat ironic for a 'speakeasy', we really felt like old people, cupping our ears and leaning in to make conversation worthy of the place. Well worth a visit, and definitely on the cocktail connoisseur's hit list, but not somewhere you'd linger at (perhaps intentionally).

Stunningly Fun, Cloak and Dagger Not So Much Fun

By Live_frm_AsiaPac |

This bar is exceptional in it's ambiance, service and drink creativity. The drinks are original, interesting and taste very good. Once in, there are booths which are black couches surrounded by sheer black curtains which create an intimate and semi-private feeling. There are two couches to each booth and we shared our booth with a couple we did not know. It was fun and friendly. The music was loud enough to make our conversations private but not so loud as to be intrusive. To call for service, you push a button in your booth and the waitress comes by; very cool system. The bar at the back is amazing in it's simplicity and space for creative drink-making genius. The bathrooms were well stocked, clean and big. My husband and I went for the end of a romantic evening and it was the best part. When we first arrived, we did not know we'd have to wait an hour before they'd call us to come in. It was a cold rainy night and we didn't have anywhere else to go. It was rather annoying so just make plans around that. The door-keeper was a nice guy and let us in a bit under an hour because we couldn't stand the college bar down the street any longer.

Wonderful speakeasy!!

This place was AWESOME!!! My boyfriend brought me here on our trip to NYC. We showed up at an unmarked door and were greeted by a friendly hostess. We waited for a table at the bar and enjoyed some stellar cocktails. We got a table quickly and we really enjoyed the decor and the vibe. It's very dim with candle light and drapes between seating areas for privacy... Very cool. The cocktails are fantastic as well with very creative alcohol combinations. Very tasty. I highly recommend this spot for date night drinks!

Meh... it was a fun experience, beyond the drinks

By Poncho1973 |

The 4 of us were in Manhattan for the long weekend and we wanted to go somewhere fun to drink. We searched online and found this place. It sounded exactly like what we wanted. We arrived about 11pm and went down the unmarked staircase to the door. We rang the buzzer after what I assume was the look-see (cool check! hahaha) the door opened and a really sweet girl took our name and told us they would buzz us if they had room for us in an hour or two. That was odd, but seriously it's exactly what you're asking for if you come to a place like this. It was a fun odd. You felt mysterious and cool. They sent us a text about 90 minutes later and we came back. Unfortunately, that's just the first step in the game. She let us in to a private entry room, shut and locked the door behind us, and took our coats. We were really excited by this point. It was fun. They have speakeasy bars in Orlando that do this exact thing, but this was the BIG APPLE! We were taken to a second staging area. What???? We weren't sure why they called us back if they weren't actually ready for us. We stood in the TINY, TINY back bar area for a good while, being knocked around like bowling pins when people went to the bathroom and servers came by to get their drinks from the bar. We were told it could be up "however long it takes" to get a seat. I found this off-putting. We waited about a half hour to sit. The drink menu was extensive. It was also expensive, but that's the charm in these places. You pay a fortune for the fun experience. The bartenders were friendly and working up a storm. Each drink had approximately 8.2 million different ingredients (never forget the random item bitters!!!) and these bartenders were clearly experts at making these drinks. I would never wish to diminish that fact. They worked HARD and seemed to be working in tandem well with each other. The problem was that the drinks weren't good at all. They were really bad. We all had drinks based on the main ingredients we loved. That's setting them up for a win. They were just not good drinks. No one in group even mildly enjoyed their drink. Mine tasted like what turpentine smells like and I love a strong drink. The atmosphere is amazing. The couches and comfortable chairs were wonderful. They have pull-chains on the wall to ask for service and NEVER bothered us if we didn't pull the tab. The place was exactly what you'd expect: crazy lamps, weird lighting, someone's great-grandma decorated it, ambiance out the butt, and so on. It was an amazing place to hang out. That said, for the incredibly high prices, I expect drinkable drinks to go with the cool. The bathrooms were unique. The wallpaper looks Victorian at first, but it's shadows of people in Karma Sutra positions. They also have a mirror over the toilet that seems to be made especially for guys to look at their experience.

Cozy atmosphere, delicious hand crafted cocktails

By Jennifer W |

This place is wonderful (if you can find it and get in without a long wait). A hidden gem in the city. Cocktails are amazing and the atmosphere is nice (not too loud) with cozy couches and club chairs. We've now been twice (on two different visits) and wouldn't miss it on our next trip.

Classy & Chic

By Jeanette Jane |

Raines Law Room takes you back to a time were all was dandy, classy and sexy! The bar is gorgeous and you can expect to discuss good business here. I love champagne and their selection did not disappoint! I visited for the first time last week during a business trip and I went back 4 out of 5 days! The service was astute and prompt too. I can't wait to hang out here again soon!

Great prohibition-style experience

By Mark, Toronto Canada |

Raine's Law Room gets its name from a famous piece of prohibition-era legislation. And the lounge lives up to the name - with no sign on the door, the visitor is required to ring the doorbell - the door opens a crack and the face inside peers out with a simple "yes?" If you're lucky, they will have space for your group (resos are accepted Sun/Mon/Tue only). The ambiance, cocktails and menu are all perfect. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable and it truly is a pleasure watching their bartenders in action (which you get to see first hand while waiting for the bathroom!) By the way, pay careful attention to the wallpaper in the lounge.

Amber Old Fashioned and Equal Temper

By T8travels |

No reservation, but the host found us standing room at the bar. Later they offered us a table, but we were enjoying our time watching the bartenders do their magic (Robin was our bartender). The cocktails were excellent and it was a lovely way to cap off our evening.

A secret place....

By PatandSib |

Bars are bars in NYC, so to find something different is really cool. This is a speakeasy right out of the 1930's - so difficult to find (even during the day) and when inside it is so laid back. Think all crushed velvet and comfy sofas and great cocktails. Just a real cool place to spend some quiet time in the hectic city which is New York!

Vintage vibes

By Jennifer |

Raines Law Room has been one of my favorite NYC speakeasys to visit over the years. The staff is friendly and not pretentious unlike some some places. There is usually a little wait after work hours when you ring the doorbell. Once inside you really do feel like you've stepped into another era and are in a secret apartment having illegal booze. I've ended up standing in the back bar area more often than not, but have also gotten a couch on some visits. Getting a seat can actually be more awkward than standing if you are just two. The only seating are couches which face across from each other. Last time I was seated across from some 20 somethings making out who were hard to ignore. Back to the important thing: the booze. The drink menu here is endless. There are pages of amazing sounding concoctions for you to chose from separated by theme (light, bourbon based, flowery etc) at $16 each. There is also a wine and spirit list for those who don't want cocktails. I don't really think you can go wrong with any cocktail here and for $16 you better not. Overall though this place is worth a visit for the yummy drinks and the overall unique ambiance.

Cozy speakeasy with great mixologist and smooth tunes

By Louis C |

Great late night lounge. The staff is friendly and efficient. Decor is classic speakeasy with couches, curtains, dim lighting, etc.. Great mixologists got me out of my comfort zone, and I thank them!

My favorite bar in New York

Nothing else to say. A beautiful, cozy bar that offers amazing cocktails tailored made with a touch of Jazz.

New york highlight

By James M |

Found via a Google-accident on our weekend trip to New York from the UK and deftly sits on the right side of the gimicky potential that these 'speakeasy' bars could have. That said, I'd never heard of the speakeasy/prohibition themed bar scene before this, and we did find the trip down to the bar pretty exciting, not knowing what to expect! Just as a slight spoiler for others I would point out that the bar entrance is the basement entrance to the left of the Chelsea inn/Hotel doorway via a doorbell. Service was excellent and knowledgeable; the focus heavily on well made cocktails and the setting dark and intimate. The music was just at the right volume for talking but not so quiet that you felt self conscious. The staff had playlisted mostly funk and soul of the type that you get when Spotify plays the original of a song you never knew was a cover... George Clinton- atomic dog etc... We didn't book a table but got one on arrival probably due to new York being a bit quiet after New year? It is small and could be a wait if it got busy? Cocktails not cheap at $17 but really, really good and you are paying for the vibe and the quality...not a happy hour booze-up. All in all, a real unexpected treat.

Excellent, interesting cocktails!

By operacarol |

Wonderful cocktail bar. One of NYC buddies wanted to take me somewhere different, and this place was great. I love to be able to get a delicious drink and have conversation at a normal level, and this speakeasy type bar was perfect. We went on a Tuesday, so we had a reservation (reservations taken Sun-Tue). Other nights are first-come-first-served, so I have no idea what sort of wait you might be in for. The cocktail menu is varied and interesting. No well drinks here, thank the Lord. Service was efficient and friendly, and the server made excellent recommendations after hearing our preferences. Atmosphere is wonderful-comfy couches, and you push a doorbell style button when you are ready for service. Not to state the obvious, these are high-end cocktails in NY so you will pay more for them. I considered the price extremely reasonable for the experience.

Top cocktails and a great private location

By Kat M |

We made a reservation and visited the Raines Law Room at the William as it was close to our hotel. We were greeted well and shown to our private booth speedily and realised the place is very very small. My partner (who is new and not quite yet sure of the speakeasy culture and felt weird pressing a button for service) said he felt a bit weird but soon warmed up as the staff were friendly and helped him find a drink for him and not at all pretentious which is what he was worried about. I had a Victory March which was lovely but my second choice, Lions Tail was truly delicious and I had to have another! Excellently mixed. I enjoyed the music and thoroughly happy I choose here to visit on our short trip to New York!

Cool speakeasy atmosphere and good drinks!

By Emily Butler |

My husband and I visited Raines on a Tuesday night in Feb 2020. The atmosphere in the bar was really cool and unlike some of the other reviews of Raines we found our waitress to be very friendly and knowledgeable. We really enjoyed our time here. We booked a table online prior to our trip as we had been told about the possible waiting times for tables. Would definitely recommend for a cool place to have a few after dinner drinks.

Romantic Speakeasy

By Conor M |

What a fabulous little place! My wife and I️ stumbled in here late on a Sunday night. It was still quite full but we were accommodated immediately. This place will take you back in time a few decades. The decor is cozy, dramatic, and romantic. And the cocktails... wow!! My wife started with one of their tea cocktails and it was wonderfully delicious and refreshing. I️ had a mezcal-based drink that was, hands down, the best cocktail of our visit! We were just starting these drinks at last call, but ordered two more of the mezcal drinks anyway because they were that damn good! Our server, Sarah, was amazing and we chatted about cocktail bars in NYC and she ended up giving us loads of recommendations for the next time we visit. We can’t wait to come back to Raine’s Law Room! I️’m guessing there are long waits on busier nights of the week but it’s well worth it!!

Cool Spot

Great little spot for cocktails. Quite affordable actually. Great ambiance. Nice vibe. The bartenders and waitresses were awesome.

Try the Midtown version

By John H |

I went to the Raines Law Room on E. 39th, in The William boutique hotel. This is one of the most charming bars I've ever been in, all plush chairs, bookcases, dark paneling, and terrific (expensive) cocktails. They have a large menu, plus a mix and match that allows you to concoct your own. Quite a small place, and inconspicuous from the street (just enter The William, and there it is, along with a great little restaurant; in the basement is The Shakespeare pub, also fantastically atmospheric, like something you'd imagine in Stratford-upon-Avon, only more perfect).

Great Speakeasy

By Ashleyd1973 |

Great atmosphere. Cocktails a little pricey but tasted great and worth it for the ambience. Highly recommend.

Very intimate Speakeasy in the NYC!

By Jamie S |

We recently visited New York City at the end of July. It was our first time to NYC. Prior to arriving, we did our homework on speakeasys and pre-booked our reservation at the Raines Law Room. It was one of our birthdays so we wanted to enjoy the evening here after having a nice dinner in the area. Raines Law Room is a speakeasy, tucked in a special area within the William hotel (actually to the left behind a curtain near the entrance to the hotel). Upon entering the hotel, there is a host for check-in. We arrived 30 minutes early for our reservation. We were guided to a back area with tables. But just as we sat down, the host informed us that our table was ready. Raines Law Room is actually quite small. There is a bar with a couple of high tables. Along the back wall are three very intimate seating areas, separated by curtains. Lighting is very subdued. The decor is on the elegant side. It is quite charming and private. The bartender greeted us. Not knowing what we wanted, he asked us what was our choice of alcohol, sweet or sour, etc... He knew just what to bring us. The drinks were fabulous. We highly recommend it!

Fantastic Cozy Bar!

By Leandro Caliento |

The entrance is a bit hidden, but once you get inside you get a wonderful surprise. The decor is based on the prohibition times with a very cozy lighting. The drinks and service are amazing! There are only 10 tables so you should book in advance.

Tiny but not so secretive cocktail bar

By Laura O |

We didn't make any reservations for here as it seemed from online reviews that we didn't have to but when we got there it transpired we should have made one. The maitre di told us we'd have to stand at a very low table with our drinks but the super nice bar men made sure that we got the next available seats at the bar before others that were hovering in the area. The cocktails are pricey but worth it and they taste as described. I had a chili margarita and a drink called a sunrise, I think! It's not really a secret bar either, it's straight up the stairs, it would have been nice to ring a secret doorbell!

Great Bar!

By Time_to_diet |

Loved the atmosphere and ambience at Raines. We arrived at 9pm on a Wednesday night, but no tables were available, so the doorman asked us to come back in an hour. We spent an hour just down the road at BLT Fish restaurant, which was excellent and then headed back over. The table still wasn't quite ready, so the doorman apologised and sent us for a beer in Petite Abeille next door and promised to come and get us as soon as a table was available. Within 15 he had appeared and asked us to return, and we were taken downstairs into the bar. The drinks were strong, and delicious and the service was personal and slick - drinks were recommended and suited my tastes (though my partner liked them less - finding them a little too alcoholic). I would definitely return, were it not for the dozens of other bars I'd like to sample on my next visit to NYC.

Speak Easy and Drink Hard @ Raines Law Room

Second time to Raines Law Room for drinks. Very cool vibe; mix of locals and tourists. Very nice craft cocktail menu; original concoctions. Beautiful environment. Sadly, we didn't have time for more than one cocktail!

After a terrible experience at Flute Midtown, we headed to Raines. I would give this place ten stars if i could! Love the decor, creative craft cocktails, friendly and helpful bartenders. This is my new go-to spot!

Unique, Classy, Upscale Speakeasy Experience.

By Exploring For Fun |

We are a mid 40's couple visiting with our mid 70's guests on an early Friday evening for pre dinner drinks. Our cab dropped us off at 5th & 48th -- we walked down the un-assuming 48th st to the "down the stairway" doorway which was kind of hidden. There's a little name plate at the door and, of course, the doorbell -- which I pushed. There was a long delay. Our guests read the discreet name plate wondering why the heck we were going to a lawyers office. They thought to themselves that I must know someone here - but had no idea what was going on... Finally The well dressed host only cracked the door expressing that he'll be right back, slammed the door closed, and we waited. A few moments later the host opened the door all the way allowing us entry. We stepped carefully down the stairway into a narrow dimly lit gorgeous lounge. Candles were flickering on the tables which were surrounded by cozy plush couches and chairs. The space is small and intimate and may hold about 50 people, give or take a little. Drinks are expensive and excellent. Service is excellent. The feeling is mysterious, cozy, sexy-elegant. Background jazz was evident and did not interfere with our conversation at all. This is a place to go with others - not a place to meet others.

Love it hate it

By Amit W |

We had the following drinks: Garden Paloma 3 Little Birds Sweater Weather Gerswin Some wine One cocktail tasted too bitter another was too high on alcohol, we were a group of 6 people and everyone felt that the bartender had an off day. The prices were around 14, which is a little too high if you dont like what you drinking. The best thing about this place is the ambiance, the theme, the decor. I would definitely go back if someone told me that their drinks got better now. Go here if want a cozy spot with your special one.

Secret, super-sexy speakeasy...

By MoJoTrippin |

I was introduced to this place by some new-found friends on my last trip to NYC. It's so low profile you could easily miss it. Once you knock on the door and (hopefully) gain access, you'll be transported back in time to an age when mixology was an art form and going out was classy, but still completely comfortable. The drinks are unique and masterfully blended; the staff is courteous and knowledgeable. And the wallpaper...well, you just have to see it for yourself. Awesome place...

Good for a visit

By Bob T |

A “speakeasy” but not hard to find, since they have a website that gives their address. A dimly lit atmosphere where you may be sharing a booth with another couple, in our case a couple who were making out to the point of being rudiculous and annoying. Cocktails are $18, and in our case not very strong. For that price I would expect a little more alcohol. For my money there are nicer bars that serve better cocktails.

Speakeasy Fun

By pdg719 |

The decor is perfect for creating a trip to the past and relaxing in a perfectly set up speakeasy. The drinks are well made and offer change to savor cocktails out of the past with a modern flair.

Speakeasy

By Lolly’s Look |

Raines is a very intimate cozy speakeasy type of bar with curtained rooms with comfortable couch seating. It is a fun place to finish off the night with bourbon based drinks in a dark, sexy setting.

Cool Speakeasy

By Jennifer N |

This was a cool little intimate spot. I enjoyed the drinks and the ambiance. The service was great. The doorman and bartenders were very welcoming. It's worth checking out, if you can find it....

Excellent find!

By Britishnurse |

My partner booked this before we came to New York. Such a cool, quaint place. Not easy to find. Great menu, great service. Relaxed atmosphere and expected prices. Cocktails range from 12 dollars to 16. Would recommend.

Don't forget the street number.....

By Luc C |

A speakeasy in the real sense of the word (not like some others with a lot of noise...), unmarked (as it should be..). Lights down, splendid "conspiratorial" atmosphere as it would have been in some way... Excellent drinks and service. Great experience!

Cool speakeasy, slow service

By MRG46 |

Great drinks & ambience is spot on but the service is really slow. If they don't tell you, you need to pull the little chain at the wall for service. And then wait..

Awesome speakeasy place

By gsaurabh84 |

We went here with another couple - tried different cocktails and they were just awesome ... Their are so many of them - tried "so long sunset" and "10 Gallon Hat" - I could easily say one of the best cocktails in the town - highly recommend this place to any of my friends....

Fun Speakeasy!

By Thebrownkidblog |

Met up with some friends for drinks at Raines. I definitely enjoyed it, it was weird at first because I went down a flight of stairs and rang the doorbell. I was greeted by the friendly hostess and I found my friends nearby. The drinks are amazing and service is great! The atmosphere is very chill and great for conversation!

A hidden gem

By Francesf |

Arrived in a group of five friends after dinner. Once you find the place, you ring the bell to be let in. They were booked when we arrived, but the host took our number to let us know when a table would be ready. He led us to the downstairs casual bar and we played pool while we waited. Once seated upstairs we enjoyed unique cocktails. You pull a string on the wall for service. Seating is plush, dark and private. What you would expect from a speakeasy. Fun time in unique atmosphere.

Something Different!

By The2ndLastGunslinger |

I managed to book a table one Tuesday for a couple of pre-dinner cocktails with my wife. I wasn't sure what to expect, but had high hopes that this would b a place to remember as it was my wifes 30th birthday. And so it was. We had 2 lovely (and strong) cocktails each and enjoyed the atmosphere & ambience. I don't think the prices were unreasonable compared to what you pay in any average pub/bar. We will return the next time we visit NY, and would recommend to others.

Best Cocktails ever!

By C A |

We visited Raines at The William hotel on East 39th street last night and had a fantastic time. The bar itself is well decorated and intimate. We were greeted almost immediately by one of the mixologists Dave and he immediately impressed us with his vast knowledge. He recommended a custom drink for my negroni loving husband. Mike mixed our drinks and clearly Is very skilled in the art of drink making. Both Mike and Dave were lovely, friendly and interesting people. We ended up staying for many cocktails and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Highly recommended!

Great Bar

By ibro82 |

A well hidden former speak easy, this bar is a very low key and relaxing place. The drinks are made the old school way during the days of the prohibition era and damn sure taste like it. The drinks are amazing and it's a great place for happy hour or pre-outing drinks with friends. Reservations are a must, as space is tight

Uber Cool late-night-drink spot

By Dawna B |

Somehow it feels like you are swept away into a secret room to sip on forbidden alcohol. Dark paneling and heavy drapes, dimly lit room with shelves of books and bottles; plush over stuffed couches and pillow with upright chairs; music to sip your drinks by. Oh - and did I mention that when you need someone on staff, you just push the secret button on the panel behind you? Instantly, one of their every-so-cool staff is at your side quietly asking what they can do for you. Drinks were unique and tasty, mood and settings relaxing - it's no wonder we didn't leave until past 1 in the morning!!

Cool speak easy vibe

By TTAH |

Went at 5pm for happy hour with a friend. We did not have reservations, but we were early so we got a loveseat in main sitting area. By 5:30 it was packed. I imagine late night it is crowded too. There are several seating areas in main area, then there are 4 smaller areas separated by curtains (if you had a party of 4, you could sit in these curtain areas all by yourselves), and an outdoor patio seating area. Very dark, lit by candles, velvet furniture, small cocktails tables. You have a button to push for service. Definitely had a speakeasy feel. Drinks were amazing. Definitely worth a visit. Hard to find. We walked by it 4 times because we could not find the #48. We heard another couple telling hostess they couldn't find it either. We finally reallized there was a door with a doorbell and a SMALL little white sign. Look for door with doorbell . Right next to #50 .

Favourite Bar in NY

This place is the best! Quiet cosy bar with stoning deco and great cocktails. You can't just enter the place.. as it is very small you might have to queue and might never get in... It's worth trying though.

They used to make great cocktails

By Sofia K |

They used to make great drinks but the quality has dropped. For $16 a drink they should be great and wanting you to have another one. The place is great, couches with curtain dividers, dark ambience, great music, intimate. It's a great bar but I hope they improve their drinks. The location on 17th St. is downstairs and there's no sign outside. You have to ring the doorbell and if there's a wait they'll take your number and text you, but make sure they get your number correctly. The woman who took my number typed it wrong. 50 minutes later we came back to ask and she realized the mistake, she apologized but when someone makes you wait that long at least they should have comped one drink as courtesy.

Sublime and sensuous speakeasy

By DebraBogaards |

There are so many great bars in Manhattan, but this one is a special gem. You walk downstairs to a black door, and ring a buzzer. A gentlemen opens the door, and politely puts your name on a list for a 1 and 1/2 hour wait. DO WAIT!!!! We walked across the street to Rye, which is a really good and casual place for dinner as well as a wee dram of expensive scotch! We returned at 11:30 p.m. and were told that we had to wait more. We decided to leave, and I told the snooty gentleman that he was a tad rude to us. As we were leaving, the gentleman stopped us and then showed us to our table. Once inside, it was pretty fabulous! It's dark, with velvet tuffeted banqueted seating in a private booth, with a flimsy sheer curtain as you enter. Lovely and intimate seating for the four of us to talk and enjoy each other's company. The drinks are superb! I ordered an expensive scotch neat. But the others had cocktails. I talked to the two bartenders for awhile, and they were very friendly. Lively around the small bar. We loved the atmosphere, and will come back.

Over hyped, over priced, I am over it

By honestopinionfrank |

I like to try different place, but this place is a scam. Not to say it's a bad place, but with so many other place, why wait hours for som body to text you and say ok we have a spot for you, come spend your money when we say so. First you ring door bell, they come to the door and say we are full but can add you to waiting list, ok we'll how long, answer don't know. Ok so they take your number and you go wait outside or at another bar, why would you go wait at another bar, to then go to another bar, when they tell you to. Place is nice, dark and nice decor, but nothing you can't get at any other high end bar in the city. If you want to go because you are intrigued then go, but I think you will come out the same way I did, saying "what's all the hype about" Just another tourist hyped place. I am sure that regular New Yorkers don't go there, for sure!,,,

This is for 24 E 39th St. location at The William Hotel

I've been at this location several times. Cocktails are great, ambiance is even better! However, this review is for the host service. It was sinply not acceptable! We (a couple) went there on Friday at 10:30, put ourselves on the list and were told that the wait was 45 minutes. We would get a text when it is our turn. 45 minutes later and no text we stopped by to inquire and were told there were 6 parties in front of us and we needed to wait longer. The text never came in. The evening was ruined. At least have common sense to tell us that because it was late and the wait time was long we would never get in. Very disappointed!

They're sexy and they know it.

By Le139 |

The wallpaper is super sexy yet classy. But please don't stare at the wallpaper, people will think you are a pervert. If you have bad eyesight like I do, wait until you go to the bathroom, you can check out the wallpaper more close up. Have fun. The bar is all the way in the back in a beautiful kitchen setting. Standing next to the bar, you can smell all kind of citrusy smell from the garnishes. It can't get any sexier than that, now can it? Despite the fancy look, the staffs are very laid back, polite, friendly and attentive. An intimate setting with dividing curtains, service bells and comfortable couches, perfect spot for a romantic date. Water and delicious popcorn were brought to our table immediately after we got seated. I'm loving this place because they play jazz music like Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong. Nothing is SEXIER than sipping delicious cocktail, munching sweet buttery popcorn and listening to some jazzy music in the background. Jk (I was trying to go with the sexy theme here) Drinks Madame George: light and refreshing Amber Old-fashioned: strong and interesting Gold Rush: lemony with a hint of honey

Exquisite

If you’re looking for a proper speakeasy experience than Raines Law Room is for you. It’s a sophisticated setting yet extremely intimate. Excellent for a pre-dinner tipped. And, wow the cocktails!!! Not to be missed I assure you.

An OK place for late night drinks.

By Joe H |

I stopped in here for late-night drinks with a few friends. The atmosphere is fun, the whole speakeasy vib sort of works. The little call buttons on the wall that you use to ask for service are great to use. We had a little trouble getting a reservation. At first they said they were booked but that we'd get a text if it turned out they could accommodate us, which we received and got in. The drink menu is vast and interesting, but I had a craving for a White Lady and was a bit disappointed that it wasn't mixed in such a way that the ingredients didn't separate in my glass. I've had White Lady's before, and about half the time this happens, but sometimes it doesn't, the drink stays mixed the whole time you drink it. A bartender once tried to explain to me how to do it right, and I didn't understand, but then I'm not a bartender and I don't work in a fancy drink place where they make "craft" cocktails. My point is, they didn't get the White Lady right at Raines, and considering it's supposed to be all about the fancy drinks, I'd give the place just an average mark.

Very Cool, 1920's feel, Best Cocktails Ever!

By Fool for the Beach |

Went on a Saturday evening. Got there at 5pm right when they opened. The guy at the door, David, is great. We got right in. No waiting. We were the third group inside, but within 30 minutes it was completely full. Very dark, cozy, great for a romantic night. Went for pre dinner drinks. The cocktails are the best we ever had. Very, very creative mixes. Wanted to try all of them. No real food, but some snacks available. The drinks are extremely strong, and you barely taste the alcohol in the true spirit of the 1920's speakeasy. Well worth the wait, especially if you go to another place for a couple hours while on the wait list. Can not wait to go back again. Fund my newest favorite place to take people in NYC...

Just super cool and quiet

By Peter W |

Tucked away in busy manhattan we stumbled in and were amazed. It was early at 5 and we got fabulous drinks. Vince was friendly and informative. I was taken back to a different time in high end New York. Curtains, quiet, elegant and incredible drinks. What an oasis in a crazy walking manhattan Very busy....normally need reservations. Another bar downstairs as well that transforms you to an old English pub Highly recommended. So happy I found this

Raines law cocktail lounge for a intimate unique cosy atmosphere

From the street you are unaware of this cocktail lounge, hidden away down some stairs you will see a back door. When you are able to enter you will be amazed by the ambiance ad bizarre settings. There are booths leading to a large kitchen where the bar staff perform incredibe skills to make great cocktails. This is a must visit

Didn't realize we should have made resv. got there ~ 10 min after opening and had to wait ~ 40 min to get in. Nice setup drinks are pricey ~ $15 each. It opens at 6PM .

Cool Atmosphere, Great Drinks, Good Food, Friendly Service

By dknight818 |

We made reservations at the William location of the Raines Law Room so we could enjoy a long, intimate cocktail session after a show. The secrecy surrounding this place is endearing, only having a vague idea of what to expect served to heighten the anticipation. When we arrived, we were a tad early and the riff-raff from rocky horror-lookin' fella' at the front instructed us to wait "in the green chair." Eventually, he led us inside, past the velvet curtain, and we sat in a lavishly appointed dark room on a comfy little couch. Our server was friendly and efficient, the drinks we had were pretty great, the food we tried was good and we had the most wonderful time watching other couples get steadily drunker and begin making out. Overall, I'd give the Raines Law Room experience a thumbs up.

cool spot

By barberad61 |

Came with a friend on our tours of speakeasys and someone told us from a diff lounge to check this space out. we didn't have reservations but we were lucky to get a stand up at the bar and I would recommend everyone to do so. its like watching a show, the bartender was awesome, his team was great and the drinks to die for.

OMG! Movie-like amazing experience!

By TerraExplorator |

So it is very tricky to find it, some places say its inside the Flatiron building, but it is actually not. From getting in to seating the whole scene is movie-like with the knocking on the door and waiting thing.. Loved everyminute of it! Inside you feel so relaxed, amazing cocktails, real speakeasy bar like no other! If you can find it, you will never forget it! In Love

Timeless elegance and classy cocktails

By TravelBellaBlog |

Nestled away on a fairly normal looking street in the Flatiron District, the steps down to Raines Law Room (which could easily be missed if you don't know what you're looking for) transport you to another side of New York. Guests are greeted warmly at the door and welcomed through a softly lit lounge into an area known as The Parlour. Plush sofas and 1920s era furniture pieces are a taste of the cocktails to come, and each banquette is equipped with a push-button bell to summon your server. We picked a couple of our favourite cocktails (priced at a similar level to what you'd pay at a decent hotel bar) and sat back to enjoy the ambiance of the place. The drinks list itself is biased towards gin and bourbon, which is reminiscent of the prohibition-era style that the bar itself exudes, but there's no risk in going off-menu here as the staff are all expert mixologists. One more highlight is the opportunity to walk through the bar/kitchen area at the back... taking the physical barrier out of the server / guest relationship is a nice touch, and one that keeps down the pretensiousness that some high-end bars tend to fall into. Take a date, and take your time.

A Prime Speakeasy

Delicious range of cocktails. Service was speedy. It is a little expensive if you’re on a budget. Beautiful little bar with intimate seating. We walked in and got a table straight away.

Biggest disappointment of New York

By Anna21734 |

My boyfriend and I thought we would try this venue after loving some other similar style bars in New York and were completely shocked by the treatment we received. It started by the women on the doors greeting us with the words "you know, you didn't have to ring the door bell for so long..." (we literally pressed it for one second). As soon as she realised we were British she then said they don't accept British numbers and tried very hard to let us know we aren't welcome (when inside 2 hours later it was clear to see we were the only people there who weren't American). We finally got inside and we're just left at the bar waiting like unwelcome rodents whilst an extremely arrogant 'mixologist' (I use that term loosely) spoke to us like complete trash and didn't even explain that the other 10 people at the bar were also waiting for tables. Eventually we got a table and literally 2 minutes after we sat down with our drinks a waiter came over and said "if your finished with your drinks we need our table back!". My partner then told him we had only just sat down and he said "yeah, okay..." And last but not least, a lady who I presume is the manager? I'm not sure, but her complete attitude was horrific and everything that came out of her mouth was a sideways insult. If your American then head here, I'm sure you'll be made to feel welcome. Otherwise, don't bother. You'd think that considering tourism brings in 102 billion dollars a year and 764,000 jobs were sustained by tourism in New York this year alone (most of that coming from outside the U.S.A), they would be slightly more accommodating to those not from there. Final words.. if you value your time, don't waste it here!

Be transported back in time. But hey - make reservations for your time travel, or be prepared to wait.

By Carriewags |

Walking down W 17th Street, you might fail to notice another stone staircase under an awning, leading to a below-street-level doorway. A tiny sign beside the door notes just another law office. However, it's a bit strange for trendy young people to be going down this stairway at nighttime? They knock, or ring the bell, and the door opens. Huh. We loved the Raines Law Room. It's dark and sultry, and we felt like we were transported back in time to the 20s. You pull a cord at your table, and soon, your waiter appears. The drinks were lovely, too. Only issue: we waited about 2 hours until we finally were seated. I'd reserve.

Completely different....

By Dan W |

We'd heard great things about this bar. It really is a cool little place. Unfortunately it was quite busy when we arrived which meant we couldnt get a table. They let us kind of hover around the bar though. The bar staff were really friendly and I have to say, it was the best cocktail I had the whole time I was in NYC. Had we been at a table we definitely wouldve stayed for more, and I'd definitely go back.

really cool bar

By krotas |

A step back 80 years, I suppose. Wasn't there to certify but that's what I would expect. Cocktails are great, atmosphere is fantastic, price is not excessive. highly recommended. Very hard to find if someone does not bring you there - but that's the cool part about it.

Great drinks/ great bartenders ... interesting place

By Frank D |

We visited on a Tuesday night and I must say from the entrance to the atmosphere it’s definatel New York. The people watching was amazing! The bartenders were top notch .. what makes this place unique is the separated sectioned of rooms and the wallpaper . It definitely gives off a low key secret friendly low vibe if you get where I’m going. Cool place must be a fun place Thursday through Sunday.

Very cool place!

By Steve N |

Felt very authentic, very cool find. Loved the fact it is tucked away and hard to find. You press a buzzer and the doorman looks through his peep hole, then says he will come back once he sees if there is room then lets you in. We only had to wait in the back bar area for about 5-10 mins before we got a table. Very dark and ominous feeling down there, but the furniture, walls, etc really takes you back. Fantastic drinks but very expensive, although I expected that. We only stayed for one drink for the experience. The ambiance was unique but so non-energetic that we would have fallen asleep eventually, needed to keep our night going so we moved on. I give four stars because it was very good, but also not five as I was not blown away either.

A great experience

By bridget f |

Raines was on our long list of speakeasies to visit when time allowed during our recent NYC visit. We decided to pop-in one evening after dinner (10:30pm on a 9/12) Seated immediately, no wait, pushed the button...server came...took order and returned promptly with delicious libations. Hit the button once again for an encore. Fast service. Intimate atmosphere....very enjoyable! They do take reservations.....but only till 4 or 5 pm on the day of.

Excellent

By TheGlobalGrownUp |

A bit of debate with the doorman before getting in. We had a reservation, saw our name on the iPad, yet he was going on about how it was impossible to have a reservation at the time we came.... Maybe some of us looked a bit too old for the target population? Once we got in, excellent setting and cool drinks - and some standard fare as well for those in the group that didn't want the Black Manhattan. We'll be back soon.

Great little cocktail bar

By Alex B |

Went here for a couple of drinks after dinner on a Monday night. Place was busy, staff very attentive and drinks were excellent. Particularly liked the cocktail with banana in it, also had an excellent rum old fashioned. There are little pull cords on the walls behind the seats to attract the attention of the waitresses which works really well. Only negative was that our table was quite close to the entrance so when the door opened there was a very cold draft.

Start of Birthday evening

By Gina |

Was walking down W 17th St. in NYC on my birthday and searched for a place to go eat an found this place on YELP. Great spot, secluded, dark, back in time and great drink menu. No food but Nibbles! Which was perfect for the time we were there. Off you go searching again...

Nearly Excellent

By JackRoy |

Nearly because the cocktail waitress passed off Gordon's as Hendrick's despite me seeing her pour it and then throw the empty bottle away! Great speakeasy bar though and the use of the unmarked door and the fact you have to ring the doorbell and get access (which may or may not mean you have to put your name on the waiting list) is all cloak and dagger and adds to the experience. Not the best cocktail I've had in the world but the barman was great (less so the female staff for the reason above!) and the atmosphere created with the lighting and use of booths nearly made up for it. If there was a 1/2 star I'd have given it 3.5 not 4 but i'm feeling generous!

An Oasis in The City

By Colson1010 |

I met a friend for drinks and small bites here last night and was totally shocked that such an intimate and private place existed right off Madison Avenue on 39th Street. It's part of The William Hotel and has sort of a secret entrance, but is not exclusive. It just felt that way. Lovely deep velvet chairs and low lighting gives it the ambience of a private club. Put it on your list for fall and winter drinks with a good friend or mate.

AMAZING! Perfect date place or business get together

By LRRAZ |

Holy cow this speak easy is sensational. Look for the black door - 48. Make a reservation!!! Dimly lit, velvet couches, sheer drapes to section off areas, no cold bar stools! It's so intimate. No one on their phones, it was amazing! $16 drinks ~ and so worth it. Drinks: Garden Paloma- so good, tequila with a major hit of spice, jalapeño quick Pear of Aces- has actual pear in it but tastes like apple pie! Yum!!! Have gone two nights in a row with work folks for small business meetings- very impressive place to take someone for this purpose or a date! Bathrooms have wallpaper that's hysterical- that pic is see is loaded. Decor is beautifully done. I wish this place was in AZ.

Expensive upscale speakeasy

By Fuss56 |

I met here with business associates for after work drinks and informal discussion. Very nice atmosphere. Several rooms/spaces are available, all dimly lit with comfy large leather seating. We received excellent service from our drink conjurer who selected drinks for us based on a few mood related questions. Everyone was satisfied with the result. The drinks were very expensive but given location and the overall experience this is probably to be expected.

Cocktails!

By Antwan |

Great friendly service, well executed drinks, dark atmosphere for a real speakeasy experience in the city! Don't come hungry they don't serve food!

Wow!

By Sarah L |

Going to a speak easy bar was definitely on my list of things to do and this did not disappoint! The experience starts by walking down an anonymous flight of stairs where there is a brass plaque stating 'Raines Law Room'. A gentleman answers the door, takes your details and advises we will get a call if there is room ( he did advise it would be about an hr) after about an hr, we got the call! The bar is extremely small but because of the set up, and the number they allow, it doesn't seem full at all, we were seated by a waitress and advised that if we wanted a drink, we were to press the bell! Decor was stunning, and I felt that I had gone back to Bugsy Malone era!! This bar is a definite must! Make sur you also check out the wall paper in the bathroom!! ,

Old World Velvet

By KaiserBrit |

Perfect Flatiron/Chelsea cocktail joint. Marvellous Welcome on arrival. Great care taken to get you seated and comfortable. Speakeasy-style buttons summon wait staff. Bustling, however the space is quite intimate, either in the main sitting room or in discreetly draped private spaces. I enjoy standing by the small bar in the rear watching craft cocktails being created. Lovely space. Very Downtown. I'll be back.

Customer Service Issues

By Kevin Anderson |

Arrived. Provided cell number. Was told 1 hr wait. We said cool. They sent us a text message 90 minutes later. We rushed back and even messaged the place back to confirm. We rushed back (got there in 10 minutes flat) came to the door and the person at the door told us that she removed us from the list. Claiming we were late? We were 5 minutes early? Very rude about it too. Not cool.

Excellent and unique cocktail bar.

By KeithRee |

Going here feels a bit naughty. Its a speakeasy type place - always packed . They will call you when a table becomes free. Great cocktails and this place is a bit different, particularly in the late hours.

Great unique bar

By Isabelle M |

It was not easy to find, you nearly see it from outside. The decor is unique with all small table in alcoves. Great cozy atmosphere. Cheers

Intimate vibe, tasty morsels

Bourbon, single malts, rum, and Scotch Eggs - my all time favorite appetizer. The cocktail lounge is lushly decorated with velvet and wood panel and intriguing portraiture. Two thumbs up.

Awesome experience ... unlike anywhere else!

By Chelsey S |

Sorta secret prohibition style speakeasy ... my husband found it online for our honeymoon so we gave it a try. Super fancy and creative cocktails with an unbeatable atmosphere. Don't be put off by having to wait .. they only let a certain number of people in at at time so we killed some time at the karaoke bar across the street for some cheap entertainment. I would recommend dressing up a bit to be let in! You will love it!

One of my fav bars in the city

By Vjay S |

One of my first speakeasies that I visited while i lived in New York. Slightly difficult to find initially but now with increasing popularity, there's usually people standing around the entrance. It's a whole different world when you walk inside. Prohibition style era with cozy couches. There's also a standing bar area in the back if you want to see them making cocktails. Extensive drinks menu. The prices are on the steeper side but one thing i know after coming here a couple of times is that the drinks over here are pretty stiff. Its better to make reservations before you arrive, else there's usually a 30 min wait. Best time to arrive is early when they open. The bathrooms are very unique, esp the wallpaper as other reviews have already mentioned. Overall, great place to get a drink or have a different experience and bring a date to. I love this place and will keep coming back.

Complex But Worth The Effort

By Emily V |

I met a co-worker here when I was in town on business. Even though she told me exactly where it was and what to do to get in, I STILL had trouble. But it was worth the effort it took to figure it out! Ambience is really cool and drinks are super interesting and tasty. Good crowd and great place to meet and catch up for a couple hours. Just really fun and feels special.

Got in finally

By JJTP |

This was an awesome experience. I finally got in with a reservation on a Friday no less. Brought a 2 out of town friend there for a business meeting. The drinks were amazing and the atmosphere was even better. the drinks are custom to spec. A bit pricey but worth it.

Unique speakeasy

By MrDuncock |

This place is a must. From the clock and dagger entry to the chain pulling for another expertly crafted cocktail. You really feel like you've stepped back in time with the decor, service and music. Loved it!

Drinks and atmosphere were amazing

By Chindos |

My wife and I love going to speakeasy, prohibition style bars and Raines Law room was a great find. There are two locations and we visited Raines Law Room at the William ( on 24th). This location is newer and is supposedly easier to reserve. We made reservations just under a week in advance for a Friday evening. I would highly recommend reservations not only to get in, but to get good seats too. We were seated on a sofa in the room with the bar (there are two rooms). The sofa had a curtain separating each of the sofas beside us making feel almost as if we had our own private room. We had our own switch to flip to summon the waiting staff for our drink which was really cool! Not all seats are set up this way, which is fine for locals but we're from out of town and the seating really added to our experience. Between the two of us, we ordered 4 drinks and everything was unique and amazing. Honestly you can't go wrong with any drink order and service was great.

Fun & quirky experience

By Bethany S |

Great experience - very fun trying wondering if we were in the right place or if we were just knocking on a random front door! Luckily a friendly waitress opened the door and welcomed us in. The bar is warm and cosy, comfy seating, and you get to have fun ringing a bell when you would like another drink to be brought over. Can't remember how much we spent but certainly don't remember thinking it was any different in price to every other bar in New York. We booked online in advance which was good as it did seem to get busy later on in the evening. Interesting cocktails too - not your standard cosmo and woo woo, but lots of new ones I hadn't tried before.

Again another great speak easy bar

By UKVictor |

This felt 'posher' than the other speak easy bars I went to and non the worse for that, packed, with a good crowd easy to get into deep conversations with interesting new people while the cocktails and Champagne flowed to the wee small hours. Go there, great fun.

A must visit place

By Deano23 |

I found this unique place thanks to Tripadvisor and i must say i'm pleased i went there and sampled it. It's not the easiest place to find but that's not such a bad thing and it all adds to the character of this bar. We got there and was told that the place was busy and there was no room but was told to drop by again in about 2 hours, they said they'd ring but we didn't have our phones on us. Anyway, we came back about 11pm and managed to get in and we went to the bar area which was abit of an education watching them concoct all these different cocktails. after a short while we got to sit down and relax on a nice sofa and take in the ambiance and atmosphere of the Raines law room. I would absolutely recommend this bar, it really is a lovely place to relax and enjoy a drink or two....maybe even three ! If/when i'm in NYC again, i will definitely head for this place, no question. p.s. Thanks to all the staff at the Raines law room.

Fantastic experience

By MazC23 |

Old speakeasy bar with a great atmosphere and unique cocktails. Am a little reluctant to write this review as this is one of the best cocktails bars I've ever been to, so much so that I'm thinking I'd like to keep it to myself. But the experience is just brilliant and the cocktails every really unique, not the usual cocktail list of Martinis, cosmos, etc. some really different drinks and it's great fun trying some of them. They do take reservations Monday and Tuesday so it's worth making one if you're in NYC on these days. Otherwise I'd still recommend it and say its worth the wait, kill the time at the karaoke bar across the road. This is now one of my favourite bars and will defo return

Great cocktails in NY

By Jauer_DK |

A very charming place to drink some cocktails. The decor is as in 1920 and your are sitting in large chesterfield furniture. From the speakers you will hear some nice jazz music. If you can find this place, go and have some cocktails.

Must go if you are in NYC

By adj311 |

Fantastic secret little speakeasy. Drinks are ferocious, I could only handle one. Cosy atmosphere, beautiful surroundings. I loved the button on the wall that would call your server. Very cool! Highly recommend putting this place on your list of places to check out when in New York.

Gorgeous speakeasy with an authentic feel

By KYH88 |

Expertly made cocktails and an intimate, sexy speakeasy vibe. If you're lucky, nab one of the curtained off sofa areas. Lots of couples - a great date location for conversation and getting cosy together. We went with another couple and had an awesome time. Raines Law Room really transports you back to another era. Feel free to dress a little fancy, there were plenty who did!

Good

By Danielle S |

We were one of the first to arrive and so the atmosphere was a little lacking at the beginning of the evening. We stayed for three drinks all of which were very good (especially if you like proper strong cocktails) and the atmosphere picked up as more people came in. Service was good all night. The downside for me was that every time someone new came in so did the cold, and it was a very cold evening! Apart from that all was good. Not sure if we'd go back, but glad we went all the same.

Romantic Spot; Subtle and Sophisticated

By irishgirl321 |

Raines Law Room has two locations, the original is at 48 W. 17th in the Flatiron district, and the second is located in the William Hotel on E. 39th. We arrived at the non-descript "black awning" on 17th Street at about 8:00 p.m. on a Saturday night. Walked down the stairs, rang the bell and were greeted cordially albeit quietly by someone who popped their head out the door and asked us to wait. After just a few minutes our party of three was escorted in to the cool, dark, inner-sanctum of the Law Room. Upholstered chairs, flickering candles, gauzy curtains encircling quiet corners, it all adds up to a hidden oasis in the city. At this time of the evening the place had a quiet buzz with about 80% of the seats filled although no one was in the bar area. Smaller parties like ours are seated towards the front. We asked to be moved further back, into a booth and were accomodated immediately by the hostess but she did let us know that we would be expected to share as the booths are meant for parties of about 6. In fact there was another couple across the booth from us but they were lovely, made great drink recomendations as they go their quite often, and then left after about 10 minutes so we had the whole booth to ourselves. To order drinks you have to pull a little chain on the wall to get your server's attention, otherwise you will not be disturbed. Our server was friendly but professional and was knowledgeable about the drink menu. Most drinks are $15 which is the norm for this type of place. Our drinks were delicious and unusual. You can make reservations at the Law Room here only on Sundays-Tuesdays, but on other nights if there is a wait they will take your name and then text you when a spot opens up so you can walk around the neighborhood and have dinner or a drink somewhere else. At the Law Room in the William you can make reservations every night. Whether you consider it a "true" speakeasy or not, The Raines Law Room is a lovely, intimate place to share a well-made cocktail with a friend.

Top rated cocktailologist

By yelnak |

After flying in cattle cars to NYC and making way via multi-modal transportation to one's lackluster lodging - where a cheeky check-in cashier led one to look longingly to unrewarding unpacking, there's not a better Midtown East locale to have top flight libations deftly fashioned in swanky Victorian surrounds. Best cocktail experience in many years. Thanks Bob!

Great intimate speakeasy!

We went to Raines Law Room in the William Hotel. Great service, amazing cocktails and very intimate atmosphere. Great for first dates but make sure to make reservations.

Insane cocktails. Run, don't walk.

Service from in the door to out the door = A++ Cocktails = Insanely good. A++ Atmosphere = Inviting. A++ We were walk-ins on a Thursday night. We were welcomed and served flavorful cocktails. BIG bonus points for the staff going into quick action to contact us about a left behind piece of property.

One of my toughest review decisions!

By Paul B |

First off, this place is COOL so I really didn't have any problems wanting to review it with other traveler's. My debate was that it's almost this semi-secret place that is hard to find and functions almost like an old speekeasy (selfish thinkig in maybe not wanting to share I guess). Anyway, it's dark and very old school with cool music and great drinks. I usually love to share cool places on here, but this one seemed like a cool little secret. Oh well... enjoy!

HORRIBLE customer service!

By PTB99 |

If you're considering spending time and money in this place, I would urge you to go elsewhere. Don't just read the highly rated reviews, read the bad ones and you'll get a better view of reality at Raines. The staff was increadilby rude. We were told that they couldn't accomodate a party larger than six. We told them that we were expecting two more people join us, making a total of seven, but the sixth and seventh weren't likely to overlap. We said that if they did overlap, then we would split up or go to the bar downstairs. Our friends did actually overlap and we were preparing to go to the other bar when an extremely rude female came flaming in and literally took a drink out of one of our guests' hands! She said we were over the max of six people and someone would have to leave. Now I understand their policy, but the place was half empty! There was no reason for her to be so rude. Given that we paid over $100 for six drinks, they should have been very grateful for our business. We will NEVER go back to Raines and warn all TA readers to not waste your time and money there. It was terrible.

Truly Splendid

Awesome! Such a great find!

Ok, this is a must go! When you penatrated this place, you are send back to new york city ... Year 1890. Drinks are orginal and inspired from an other era. Decoration, service: everything is impressing!! Low lights, jazzy music, secret place ambiance from the pre prohibition era: everything is in place to live a unique experience. Tip: arrive early since there a lot of people interested and not a lot of seats. Wow, wow, wow!!!

Only if there were more places like this on earth..

By HG56 |

I wanted to check out a speakeasy spot while I was in New York, and after looking for a few online I chose this one. This place is amazing, I felt completely in my comfort zone. They had amazing drinks, and I really mean amazing ! The atmosphere was great, very nice mixed crowd. The music was awesome, great Jazz for most part. The decor was inspiring and the service was excellent. I wanted to spend the whole night in that place. It really makes you feel like at home. I wish there were more places like this in other cities, but to be honest this is a gem that you most likely can only find in New York. I will return over and over again.

Least favorite mixology bar in NY

By ThomasWollwo |

I've visited about ten well reviewed bars by now and this is my least favorite one. Drinks are good, but the atmosphere is too hoity-toity for my taste. The whole ring at the door spiel seems more tired and serious than at other places, and I didn't feel as welcome than ay PDT, Death and Co or Dead Rabbit. The well-heeled patrons seemed to have a good time, though, and maybe I just visited at a bad time. I'd probably not return, though.

Great speakeasy for drinks!

By Adam G |

I went to Raines for the first time and had a great experience. You feel transported back in time with a prohibition style speakeasy. The decor is cool with couches in various alcoves to sit at. The servers were prompt and attentive and had great drink recommendations. I highly recommend the island/tiki style drinks - they were delicious and you feel transported to an island! Overall, a great time and I'd highly recommend this spot.

Rude staff and unwelcoming

By Max York |

The ‘welcome’ couldn’t have been any more inhospitable. After much consulting of the seating plan, sucking of lips and shrugging of shoulders, the girl on the front door said she’d try to find us somewhere, leaving us in no doubt she was doing us a huge favor…we really should’ve left at that point. It’s a mediocre room at best with any atmosphere sucked out by over preened waitstaff and anxious guests…lots of far better alternatives with much better speakeasy vibes

excellent new york experience

By Michael B |

It takes a while to get in this room but once you do it is really worth it. Initially we were greeted by a young woman who in a very clandestine manner opened the front door looked at the queue and started taking names and numbers. Initially we left the queue because my wife wouldn't wait but we returned about an hour later and got straight in. People did seem to be able to bypass the queue but as much as we tried to figure you how we couldn't. once we did return Raines law room is possibly the coolest place I have ever been to. The cocktails are eclectic and therefore offer a varied experience to a generic chain and the service is second to none(this includes the lady who greets you). If you can persevere with the wait this is an experience you shouldn't miss.

Warm and Cosy

By Elizabeth S |

Lovely drinks, great ambience. Did not like waiting outside in the cold when we had a reservation. Great drinks - the servers take the cocktails very seriously - almost TOO seriously- but they were delicious. Nibble dish ordinary. A fun place to visit - if a tad pretentious.

Piece of Garbage

By Clear_Blue_Gypsy |

What a Piece of Garbage! DO NOT GO HERE! I planned a nice outing with some friends of mine last Friday and of course I went to my source of truth aka "yelp" to find a nice trendy spot of a casual couple of drinks in NYC. With so many places to go in NYC i wanted one that would be truly great and I've always had such good luck choosing places....UNTIL NOW. We we arrived, we did exactly what the reviewers said.....we walked down the stairs and ran the doorbell. I have to say it was kinda cute because it did remind me of ol' time speakeasies, but that's where the CHARM STOPPED. The doorman, who was a snotty British guy, took like 5 minutes to open the door (which he was planted right next to on a stool). He then pretentiously cracked open the door and looked us up and down and told us it was an HOUR WAIT. Ummmmmmm..... it was 6:15pm on a Friday! Plus from the other reviewers I know that they typically make it seem like there's a lot of people when the place is empty. Then without a word he slams the door in our faces. NO CUSTOMER SERVICE! There was no "I'm sorry, its a bit of a wait, I can put your names down for a table and call you when we have something" OR " I'm sorry you can wait at the bar until a table/ seating opens up". I mean with all the places in NYC YOU THINK I'M GOING TO STAND OUTSIDE A PLACE FOR 1 HR AT 6:15PM ON A FRIDAY IN THE HOPE THE TOUGH BRITISH GUY LETS ME IN?? I think not. We ended up going to the bar in the W Hotel where they we hospitable and pleasant to patrons. I don't know what ppl see in this spot but I will never go back! PIECE OF GARBAGE! DO NOT GO!

Fabulous high end cocktail bar

By Heather R |

My husband and I visited the Midtown location of Raines Law Room. Cozy, small, intimate atmostphere. The bartender was spot on with his drinks. My husband appreciated the scotch list as well. I love a cocktail bar where I can tell the bartender what flavors/styles of drinks I like, and a drink can be made up on the spot (off the menu). The bartender did this for me for multiple drinks and all were delicious. Highly recommend and will return!

Old School Cocktail Experience

By Nimai Hari |

We came here for a bachelor party - due to their intimate atmosphere, we had to split into separate groups. They were really diligent at keeping the atmosphere and vibe of the space by asking us multiple times (which i respect) to stay in our groups. Everything from the ordering experience, the service, and the drinks were great.

We loved our visit here! Great cocktails, fun atmosphere

By Jessica S |

We had a blast at Raines Law Room. The cocktails were great and it was quiet/private enough to talk to everyone in the group. We were seeing friends we hadn't seen in a long time, so it was nice to be able to hear and converse. The service was good, but unobtrusive, the drinks were quick considering they were all hand-crafted and everything was delicious! This is a smaller place, so be prepared to wait!

Worth visiting New York just to go here

By KittyMonty |

The biggest disappointment of our visit to New York was that we only got to go to this bar once, for an hour. It's one of those places that you wouldn't know was there from the street; you knock on the door and get buzzed in. We were early so there was no problem getting in but I imagine that later in the evening it gets very busy. You then go behind the curtain and voila! It's like stepping back into 1920s New York. The atmosphere is just magic and the cocktails were divine. I'd go back in a shot.

A great experience!

By Brenda S |

Just watching the talented bartenders craft your drink in the "kitchen" area of the bar is an experience! The whole place smells like fresh citrus fruits (which, surprise surprise, are used as artful garnishes in the drinks), and the swanky jazz music adds an atmospheric touch. I imagine this is as close as you'll get to an "authentic" speakeasy. The surroundings were intimate, and the drinks were unique and delicious! The only complaint I had was the place was crowded the night I visited, so I had to do a lot of standing since there were no seats. But being able to watch the bartenders mix up the drinks made up for it because it was like watching mad scientists or master chefs whip up a creative and inspiriting concoction. Check out the wallpaper in the bathroom!

One of the best speakeasies

By Katy |

This was the first place we visited on our trip to NYC. We'd heard about it from a friend and had to visit. We didn't have a booking the first time we went (as a group of 4), but were lucky enough to be fitted in after only a 15 minute wait. I have nothing bad to say about this place. The atmosphere is like walking into the 1930s, the bar and wait staff are beautifully presented, and very knowledgeable. The cocktails are amazing and there is a range of classic speakeasy drinks to innovative new ideas. We went back for a second visit the night before we flew out and will be sure to come again the next time we're in NYC.

Amazing drinks, friendly folks

By jbrown68 |

My friend and I assume there'd be a snob-element to this speakeasy-type bar, where you have to ring a doorbell to enter. We went on the early side--around 6--and were surprised at how full it was. The door person asked if we had a reservation. We did not, but we were told we could drink standing at the bar in the back and she would let us know when a table opened. That was fine with us. The bartender in the back was lovely. Very friendly (even to a couple of middle-aged women who were not swankily dressed; let it be known, though, that we were the oldest in the room by a bunch, but no one seemed to care) and it was fun to make her watch the drinks. She clearly knew what she was doing. My friend ordered a fruitier drink (Island something?) which was refreshing, but my Fahrenheit 451 is my new favorite drink. It's like a spicy Old Fashioned and it was amazing. The hostess did indeed come and get us when a table opened, and we sat undisturbed until we were done. Overall the setting is cozy, the drinks fabulous, and the folks there friendly. Would totally go back. (But this is a small place, not good for a crowd.)

Great little speak-easy

By Alex |

Finding a civilised drink in NY is difficult, but Raines Law Room is great. Fantastic cocktails mixed with a subdued quiet atmosphere makes this the perfect sophisticated drinking establishment. The only reason not to give it 5 stars was that the waiting service was a tad haphazard when we went and the food could be improved, but as a high-end place for a quiet drink it can't be beaten.

Well worth a visit

By JoyceNLBE |

After a small search, we entered this very nice bar! Great choice of cocktails, not too much, tasting even better! Nice staff and atmosphere!

Charming cocktail bar

By The Bee's Knees |

Raines Law Room is definitely one of the best cocktail bars in NYC, and worth the effort of making a reservation for. All of the drinks we tried were excellent, and I am particularly pleased with the recommendation of a De La Louisiane cocktail when I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted. Highly recommend visiting here to get to enjoy the perfectly crafted cocktails of a very knowledgeable group of bartenders. The little curtained seating areas were a fun little touch and the "press a button to order" set up was convenient and provided us with the privacy we wanted until it was time for the next round.

Cozy speakeasy, good 1 time place

By EMSid |

Nice little lounge, beautiful decor, 14 tables(approx 40 customers), the hostess was very sweet. We (2) were there 1 1/4 hrs and could only order 1 drink ea. There was just one waitress and we were told they were short on staff at the bar. Fun to see but could have been much more enjoyable with better service. BTW it is very warm inside so i couldn't imagine staying much longer before melting.

Chic chic chic

By KiplingsMom |

A really classy cocktail bar within the William boutique hotel. What a great find. I tried the gold nugget cocktail which has bourbon and orange as its base. It was delicious. Two would have put me into super giggle mode so I stuck with one. My husband tried the Japanese whisky. Compliments of the maitre D and said it was very passable which is a big compliment from him let me assure you.

Great place for a drink or two

By Matelskeren |

This place is not easy to spot from the outside, it´s down the stairs and behind an unmarked door, so remember the address when going here. The drinks was very good, and the service was impeccable. Definitely worth a visit!

Escape loud touristy places

By azurenight |

Yes, it's unmarked. Yes, it's pricey. Yes, there is a wait. Yes, they are discerning with who they let in. But you can actually hear your friend/partner talking when inside. You can get a seat. It's civilized. The drink I had was delicious, not just a bunch of ingredients thrown together. There were fewer tourists and loud annoying people here. That's worth the price for me.

Too hyped up for no reason!

By Sera Knows |

Skip this place and go to Death and Company if you want good drinks done by real mixologists. This place is a complete waste of time. The waitress looked like she had no prior training and she had no clue about the drinks we asked about. She also had an attitude problem. Drinks are horrible to say the least....

You have found the speakeasy of the city

By bgsu1980 |

One door, ring the bell, get on the list, and come back for some of the best drinks, and the best underground hideout in the Flatiron area. Jasmine will find you a couch or chair and settle in for the night. Take your girlfriends and show them something they won't see many other places.

A private little piece of a bygone era.

By MRK321 |

I would imagine that they can't help but be discerning due to the small size of the room, so it's well worth it to make reservations for a spot. It's dark and intimate, and the perfect place for a date. Pricey, yes, but the drinks are good and served in the loveliest glasses. I'd say it's great for couples going on a first, second or third date.

Great find for cocktails

By Emma_travel26 |

This little place serves brilliant cocktails! The exclusivity of it makes it all the better, having to ring the bell and be let in. You are then escorted to your table which each has an individual bell in order to ring for service. Lovely intimate atmosphere and well worth a visit!

Very cool...

By Melissa T |

Very unassuming from the outside but totally amazing on the inside. Dark and moody with good cocktails. Great decor. Check out the meaning behind the Raine Law.

Arrogant staff + no reservation system = waste of time.

By Benjamin |

I've been to this speak easy a dozen times. They never remember me, don't take reservations, and require you to wait 1-2 hours, at which point they call you and you come and wait at the bar.

The worst service in NYC

By Abby M |

Wouldn’t even let us in even with reservations! They said they canceled our reservation without any notice. We made reservation for two tables but they said this wasn’t allowed and wouldn’t let us talk to anybody even though it was for a surprise birthday. Then they said there was a $500 reservation fee even though their website makes no notice of it on their website. Extremely taken aback by the absolute rudeness.

Cool but nothing special

By LAFAMILLEG11231 |

Dark dim cool place. Nothing special to remember though. Cool decor, slow service over rated. A good stop though.

Amazing Place

By MelsR16 |

We read the reviews of Raines on trip advisor and were not disappointed, great decor, great atmosphere and amazing cocktails. The entrance is not obvious so we just got the cab to drop us off at the address and were faced by a small black front door. On knocking you will be invited in - we had booked a table, otherwise you are asked to leave a number and the bar will contact you when they have a table free. The cocktail menu was fantastic, not a cosmo or manhatten in sight. Once you've made your choice you press the bell and a waitress/waiter will appear, happy to answer any questions. The drinks are around £10 each and generous with the measures. There is no time limit on the table booking and at no point did we feel rushed to order drinks or finish them off. Will be returning. Point to note is that bookings can only be made on a Monday or Tuesday so would suggest on the other days be prepared for a wait.

Great speakeasy in East Village

By Mercedes E |

A group of friends and I went here on a Saturday night. One person went ahead and put our name on the list and the wait for us (group of 5) was about 1 hour. We ended up getting in sooner than that thankfully. The decor of the speakeasy is great and there are little booths for each party (probably 8 people could fit in each). Most of my group ordered a cocktail that wasn't in the book but was cooked up by the bartender. He asked what type of spirits we liked, what flavors, fruits, etc. Everyone was pretty satisfied. The only negative besides the wait time is the policy on large parties. We were expecting another 3 people and was told they couldn't just join our booth, we'd all have to drink at the little bar in the back and if the additionally people sat across from us at another booth we couldn't chat. No real reason was given , just policy. Really? We can't chat with our friends across the 1 foot walkway in another booth? Apart from that I'd return but probably with only 1-2 people or with a date.

Wednesday night in the city

By Lynne L |

Not long wait, no secret password required. We sat on the patio- great ambience. Great selection of cocktails, but pricey. Awesome atmosphere. Just note no food except nibbles like a cheese platter. Very cool and fun, just eat first or expect only drinks and a cheese platter

Terrible Service

By Jack M |

When we arrived we were told our reservation had been canceled even though I had booked it a few weeks in advance. There was zero notice about this and claimed they had a policy for why they did it. When I asked to see the policy they refused to show me. We made an hour long trek into the city just to be told at the front door that we could not come in. Pretentious and rude service all around and spoiled a birthday.

Just terrible

By wasabiDale |

I will never be coming back here because the staff is so unprofessional. Heard so many things about this bar so wanted to check it out. It’s just a hype. And the people here are not welcoming.

Easily my favorite bar anytime, anywhere!

By eileeninseattle |

The Raines Law Room is a dark and cozy hideaway, perfect for a small group or a special date. There are no tables and chairs, just comfy couches and armchairs. My favorite place to sit are the wonderful curtained hideaways around the edge of the room. Press a button on the wall to summon the waiter. The cocktails are interesting, strong, and fairly pricey, but what a wonderful place! I would go here every night if I could. Three pieces of advice: the entrance is somewhat hard to locate. Look for the awning marked 48; the door to Raines is just down a small flight of stairs. Ring the bell and you will be admitted. Also, if you know beforehand that you would like to visit, make a reservation through their website. They only take reservations for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday nights. Lastly, eat first. There is a short food menu, but the focus is on the alcohol.

Unexpected surprise

By Solivagant1975 |

We stayed at the Chelsea Inn next door (would not recommend btw) and found the speakeasy via the back door. What an unexpected surprise. We arrived early evening when not crowded so three of us were able to sit across from a lovely couple of locals who were more than happy to share recommendations of restaurants and things to do in the vicinity. Dark, lovely little place, great for small groups of friends or a more romantic evening. The curated drinks were delicious and reasonably priced. I will definitely return here next time I’m in the neighborhood.

Gorgeous cocktails

By MattandEv |

We arrived for drinks at Raines Law Room at the William on a Friday evening around 6.30pm having not made a reservation. After a slight mishap where we were sent down to the normal bar to wait and then forgotten about for a while (hence the 4/5 rating) we were seated in a plush nook / booth and presented with the menus. It was extensive, and I eventually settled on a So Long Sunset. The boys went for whiskey sours while my friend told the waitress she liked gun and elderflower and the bartender made her up a cocktail containing both! I loved the decor and the chilled atmosphere, and the drinks were excellent - strong and flavoursome with plenty of alcohol! We also loved the switch you flicked on beside the table when you were ready to order. Being served water ( without being asked) alongside the cokatils was a nice touch. There was finger food available but we didn't have any. Though expensive, Raines Law Room is a really nice cocktail bar for a treat!

Cozy spot for cocktails

By annapolis123 |

A little exclusivity. A little mystery. A nice way to spend an hour or two with friends or a date. Were seated in a private bordello-y hideaway with three friends after a corporate event. Perfect way to end an evening. Well prepared, easonably priced cocktails.

Vintage Speak Easy - you need a reservation

By Andreas161 |

This is a Speak Easy, not that easy to find. No marks outside of the bar. You have to ring and wait for someone to open the door. Once in, this is a great place to unwind and enjoy high-quality cocktails. I read that you would need a reservation. Even on a Wednesday evening, the bar was packed. So, if you plan to get there book your spot in advance.

A Speakeasy

Go down steps and ring a doorbell....a fun, romantic environment! Drinks, only but a great experience!

Awesome spot

By Jamie C |

In town for thanksgiving and was brought here by friends. Very cool spot with one of the best drink selections I've seen. Very unique, and great for small groups to be able to get together.

A good change of pace from NYC nightlife!

By Jen S |

You wouldn't know it is there unless you knew it was there! Very neat, small 'underground' speak easy. Very unique drinks to choose from and the staff is pleasant and more than willing to recommend drinks. I enjoy the fact that it is small and they limit the number of guests allowed inside so you are not rubbing against sweaty, obnoxious bar patrons. A very cool place to go with a few friends to have drinks and chat!

A secret, stylish speak easy

By Londoner132 |

Hidden behind a rather large door, this speak easy is just as one would imagine the 1920s drinking scene would look. Dark, mysterious and understated glamour. We enjoyed great cocktails and great service. Would recommend but don't go when you are tired/ jet lagged as the darkness may send some people (my younger sister) to sleep. Also need to book and there is no telephone number which makes things a little difficult if you are running late etc.

Great Manhattan's

By LibyAH |

Such a little find! Inviting decor, comfortable setting, perfect for a date, or pre-game for a night out on the town. Speak-easy atmosphere. Great mixology and service. Truly enjoyed our visit.

Unique treat!

By 66Red |

We loved this place! 'secret' entry, dark and mysterious decor, unusual cocktails...we did feel very sneaky and slightly naughty in this amazing authentic speakeasy!

Great Service and Drinks

By wrmomxg |

This is one of our favorites places. You can walk right past this place so get your directions squared up before you go. The bartender knows his stuff and the staff was courteous at all times. It is a very comfortable place to hang out and savor the drinks and atmosphere. Try the "last word". As others have said, coming with a large group (i.e. +6) might not get you in promptly. This one actually does have outside seating.

Cozy atmosphere, delicious drinks

By Joanne L |

Decided to come here based on recommendations from multiple sources, and I have to agree. If you're looking for a speakeasy, the Law Room is a solid bet. Service is excellent, the servers and bartenders are ready with suggestions if you're not sure what you want. Don't be surprised if there's a waitlist, but the wait is worth it. Grab a drink at one of the bars closeby until your reservation comes up.

Fantastic experience.

By WindsorWriter1 |

A must see in New York. Needs to be researched otherwise you'd never find it which is part of the attraction!

Could be great, wasnt

By Bill T |

While the hidden doorway and basement bar is cool, it missed a few marks. One, they seat couples in private curtained areas on a coach...facing another couple a few feet away. So its great for a voyeur and/or exhibitionist but not very private/semi private. I would rather the couches just faced the room. It took a long time to get a drink in a place with 20-30 customers too.

A great experience

By notmoira |

We ran across this place while searching for unique bars, and I'm so glad we went! We didn't have a reservation, but put our name on the list and shopped down the street for a few minutes while we waited. I received a text when our seating was ready. Raines is a dark, unique place with pricey drinks (to be expected) and a very interesting vibe. The two drinks I had were very strong, so I definitely felt like I got my money's worth when I practically stumbled out of the place. It made for an interesting subway ride back to the hotel. Overall, it was a great experience and I'll definitely go back next time I'm in New York.

Very cool place

By Chris M |

Drinks were awesome, the place was old-fashioned and secluded just like a speakeasy should be. The staff was friendly. Overall it was a very pleasant experience. Recommended

Interesting experience, one time only

By Paul S |

Look for the awning and the stairs down, otherwise you'll miss the entrance. And, you have to ring the buzzer to be admitted. Inside. Then the club feel ends. Inside, there is a maze of little sitting areas separated by drapery before you get to the bar. Lots of couches, dark and secluded atmosphere. Be prepared to share a sitting space if there are only two of you. Service is by pulling a chain on the wall, which lights a little service light. The wait staff is used to this and is very responsive. Prices are typical (high) NY for drinks. Eclectic menu for these. The Room was fun, once, and only because we were in the neighborhood.

What a wonderful place! Our daughter took us here and I wonder how she found it! Great atmosphere, great cocktails. You have no idea it exists from the street. Thoroughly recommended but book a table first.
