Malaysian spot with tasty, authentic dishes

By Shanelle |

Malaysian spot with tasty, authentic options. Anthony Bourdain had been here before for the Sarawak laksa, and that’s exactly what I got. The broth was nuanced and immensely flavorful. Note that it does have shrimp. It was so good that even when my dad had some soup go down the wrong pipe, he still kept eating the soup in between coughing. The Malaysian combo came with 2 of each item - chicken satay, murtabak (these little potato pastry things), and curry puff pastries (note there’s meat inside). My mom got the Nasi Kerabu with fried chicken and loved it. It came with blue rice, which was pretty cool, and the chicken was well done - lightly crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside. The mango smoothie was a bit icy but I liked how they added a bit of whipped cream and strawberries on top. Credit cards are accepted. Indoor and outdoor dining is available. Two gender neutral bathrooms are available in the back. They do have alcohol; the Mekong whiskey was earthy and my dad enjoyed his neat. It’s good for big groups as well as one-on-one hangouts, and they do have takeout. Overall, highly recommend grabbing food at this place whenever you’re craving something flavorful.

Rasa

By Johnny Novo |

RASA! What a cool name right? Don't you just want to rhyme it or make a freestyle out of it? "I was down at Rasa wit my homie Mufasa, Simba WHACK he prolly still eatin microwaved pasta..." But I digress. This place was PHENOMENAL. My homie who rates Thai food for a living gave it "a 8 or 9," and I never seen him give above a 7.5. The best Thai I have had in the city, well Terra Thai lowkey is right there but it's so different I can't compare. WAIT Y'ALL STILL EATING AT FISH CHEEKS?!?!? (LeBron laughing emojis) COULDN'T BE ME!! We went with the little beef pancake thing to start, the Malay Hokkien Mee (noodles), Massaman Curry, and the beef special that was recommended on the back of the menu but I forgot the name. Everything was amazing, but I think the highlight was the noodle dish bec...well now that I type it out and really think on it, idk. Everything was so flavorful, yet not overwhelming. The line between not enough flavor and overwhelming flavor is as fine as a G2 Premium roller pen 0.5mm. Real ones know. RASA DID IT RIGHT! THANK YOU RASA I WILL BE BACK! IG @jnov_ Tiktok @jnov__

Cheap, cheerful and authentic Asian food

By Mad_Madam_Nim |

We chose this place in the village as we were going to the area to celebrate a friend's birthday. It is a great place if you want something quick and delicious at a reasonable price. I imagine it's a good lunch place, although we came in the evening. I had the curry laksa and my husband the crispy chilli chicken, both of which were very good. We were in and out in 45 minutes. Would go again if in the area.

Amazing!

By codiesherwood12 |

Amazing service and delicious food! We had the pineapple fried rice. I’ve never had rice that flavorful! We definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone craving Thai.

Never again!

By SusiDie |

The restaurant is really loud especially the service people. They cleaned the table before we even finished our food, because other people were waiting... The Food is okay, but expensive. But the worst: for tourists they add what they expect as tip: 16-20%! And because of the reasons above, we paid 5%. And the worst is: they run after us to show us what is normal and want to have more!!! This is the worst we have ever experienced in travelling around the world. Never again!

Fantastic casual restaurant for Asian cuisine

By Tighe2015 |

This intimate restaurant offers delicious Asian fare from the Won Ton soup to flavorful sushi. The mochi and green tea ice-cream were awesome. The service was prompt and attentive with the wait staff offering insider tips to dinner selections. This came in handy as it was difficult to chose an entree as they all looked great. This casual restaurant offers their customers a warm and inviting atmosphere to enjoy a quick bite and gathering place for families to enjoy some together time around the table. Definitely going back when in the city.

Great Food!

By Colleen B |

My co-workers come here often for lunch, as the food is good, there's a great lunch special with bento box options, sushi options, or sashimi options, and we can get in and out of there in under 40 min. Miso soup is a must - for some reason it's better than most. Service is quick and pleasant. Green tea tastes excellent!

Excellent food, casual environment and very affordable.

By gomezofNYandLA |

Have been here for work meetings and occasions with friends. The place is very easy and has an extensive menu. They even have vegetarian and vegan options. The lunch specials make this place very affordable but in general it's an inexpensive place to go to especially if you have a big group. If you're in the

Never again!

By Susie M |

Nothing we tried was good. We ordered fish cakes and we thought we were eating rubber. I asked the lady what she recommended with noodles and she said to try "Mee Goreng". It was like eating spaghetti with chicken, nothing spectacular. My husband ordered sushi and the tuna was soooo dried, you can tell it was in the fridge for quite some time. Sushi is supposed to be fresh.the rice was also terrible.it was truly a waste of our money and time. Never again!!!

It's decent

By IraNYC14 |

If trip advisor had a rating in between average and very good, aka "good", I would select that option. I was here today with friends for dinner and we ordered from the Malaysian menu. Everything we tried was good - Roti Canai, Curry Puffs, Lamb Curry, Kang Kong with Belacan Sauce, Hokkien Prawn Mee, Mamak Maggi Mee Goreng, Singapore Crispy Squids which was on the sweeter side & really crispy, Chili Crab with Fried Mantou, and Steamed Hainanese Chicken which was really soft. Out of everything we ordered, my favs were Mamak Maggi Mee Goreng, Roti Canai, Lamb Curry, and Curry Puffs.

Good place where to eat asian food

By lucoh99 |

This restaurant is located in te Southern part of Manhattan. The definition of Malaysian does not seems correct to me, as it’s more an asian restarant. The ambient is a bit dummy but relaxing, All the waiters are pretty kind and definitely efficient. When you order a dish they repeat the orders so that not to be wrong and they are pretty fast in delivering the orderings. All the disse we tried were different, but the most had a wonderful taste. We loved the vegetable dumplings and the mixed appetizers dish, the ocean rolls and the uramaki, the fish soup and the meat as well. Even the beverages are also good here, as they have a grat beer and cocktails list.

Great call

By MoCrawfish |

My family stopped in on a weeknight. We were seated right away. The service and food were both top notch. My daughter, who doesn't care for too much heat was accommodated no problem. I'll definitely go back.

Worth it! Very authentic and tasty Asian food, great value!

By Michael&Odile |

We love Asian food and we just came this by coincidence walking by a few times. When I had a foot massage next door one evening we gave this restaurant a go and we were not disappointed at all. Service was attentive and the menu had lots of choices. As a starter we shared the vegetable Kimosas and the mango salad. Both very tasty and fresh. Portion size great but not very large. As a main we had the Massaman curry and the Nasi Lemak. Again very nice and super tasty. The Nasi Lemak was not as good as when I had it last time in Malaysia, but considering we are in the US it was very good. The service was quick and plenty of water refills without asking. The bill was really moderate for the quality of food! So well done and keep it up. We will be back!

Nothing like the original

By hoopster2net |

Big mistake was trying the Laksa and Chilli crabs at Rasa, one week after having them in Singapore. Nothing like the original. A little to sour for my taste. I will keep looking for something like the original taste somewhere else. The Laksa was like a thick gravy and nothing like the original. Service was very hurried. The waiter could not wait to take our order and be done with it. After the first batch of stuff, we wanted to order a couple more things. He rushed off right after I said the name of the first item and before I could order the the second item! I tried to call him back, but he was gone.

Cute little Malaysian/SEA restaurant

By greenham01 |

Decent Malaysian food especially after being deprived of it for some time! I liked their Penang Laksa, nasi lemak and char kway teow. Not bad for being so far away from home! Service was attentive and prompt, good for a simple quick meal.

Fine food and excellent service

By Canuck034 |

This is a Malaysian restaurant. We were in a family group, so we got a large order. My nephew's wife is from Malaysia, so we let her suggest what to order. Everything was delicious, nicely spiced. The service was excellent and the kitchen was willing to cook what we ordered as we wanted it. It is downtown on the edge of Greenwich Village.

Most authentic S.E.A food in NYC

By Lena T |

As a Singaporean transplant to NY, this has been one of my favourite finds. I had the Nasi Kerabu, Soft shell crab appetizer and the Seafood claypot. The soft shell crab appetizer was delicious though not very Asia (had jalapenos and fried chick peas in it) - but the flavour was great nonetheless. The Nasi Kerabu was well done - the chicken was very similar to the typical Indonesian ayam goreng which I loved. Alongside the sambal chili with ikan bilis (first time I've encountered these elusive little fish since moving to NY)! The seafood claypot was only ok. It was a Thai based curry so not too spicy but could do with much more glass noodles instead of coming with rice as a side. Seafood was fresh though. The restaurant is loud but I'd still go back for the makan (the food)!

Down to earth Malaysian restaurant without the Bells & Whistles

By Imtiaz I. |

When you are tired of fast food, RASA is the place to visit for Slow Food. Good selection in the menu, prices are very reasonable, bordering on being cheap. Meals are quite close to being original and the portions are not huge. Service was "curt" which is arch typical Malay style. You get used to this with frequent visits to KL or JB. Desserts are disappointing and were very so so.

Fantastic food

By Chris and Sue H |

just down the road from where we were staying in Greenwich village on 8th street , ate here twice both times the food was consistent in quality. The staff friendly, welcoming and generous. If you like Malaysian food absolutely I can highly recommend this restaurant. We have been to Malaysia several times and the food is authentic and freshly cooked. Our favourite starter was the crispy calamari , my husband's first choice for main was beef Rengdan . A busy restaurant on both occasions speaks volumes.

Excellent food and ambience..!

By MFSharuji |

I tried the Nasi Kerabu, egg-yolk prawn and ayam masak lemak and they were great...! Authentic Malaysian food taste. Highly recommended...!

Authentic Malay Cuisine & Service Best In NYC

By Stephen M |

We walked past the Rasa on 8th, on a Sunday afternoon. It was so busy, the menu looked so tempting. We just had to book a table. (booking is a must or be disappointed). When booking & when arriving (at 8pm) the welcome was excellent from the staff member. The tables are mainly laid in two rows down either side of the restaurant floor with a separate bar area. We opted for Malay dishes, however there was also Thai & Japanese menus. We went for Roti Canai, Crispy Veg Spring roll, Chicken Satay starters & main Tofu Mee Hoon Goreng, Chicken Massaman Curry & Steamed Jasmine Rice. Having lived in Malaysia for three years, knowing the cuisine I & Philippa were not disappointed at all. The food was very well presented, tasted fantastic & the service was excellent. Thank you guys. The restaurant was noisy busy buzzing but comfortable. The price was very reasonable too. A brilliant experience.... Thank you.

Best Malaysian cuisine!

By AidanZO305 |

I have tried several orher Malaysian joints, in Union Square and Little Italy, they both were great but Rasa was awesome! The servers were quick, kind and helpful, The place is spotless, location is great and great selections as well. Went back three time after I discoveref the joint! Coole blocka from the blue A, C and E lines (West 4th) and short walk from Red 1 and 2 line (Christopher st). Check em out! A MUST, roti canai with Malaysian curry dipping

Good food

By Ian T |

One is justifiably uncertain about a place that offers sushi, Indonesian and Malaysian in the same location. We ordered appetizers and entrees that were Malaysian and Thai. They were tasty and plentiful, but purists might argue that they were not quite authentic. However, we had a good meal. Service was pleasant and timely. Wine and beer available. By the time we left the place was quite crowded. Certainly worth a visit

All Great Things Pass, but Very Good things Remain

By Drbrooks4337 |

For several years we have visited Rasa for their Char Kuey Teow and Sarawak Laksa. During our previous two visits, they warned that the shipping and spice for the laksa price increases may force them to stop making it. Well it happened. So I tried their substitute’curry laksa’, which was excellent, but not the same. The Char Kuey Teow remained the very best. The keropok was house made and very good. For desserts the ice Cendon and Mango mousse were heavenly. We love the staff and will return as often as we can. It is still highly recommended for great Malaysian, Singapore and Thai offerings.

Not a gr8 one. ..

By drdanielmacdonald |

Went in with a groupon and given a 'special groupon menu'.. I hate that! (like please try us out and then give us a menu with very few choices) Service was very informal... The starter and main were really good. But they had run out of the 2 choices of desserts..so instead of offering us alternatives. .We were simply given 2 tapioca puddings rather than what we wanted..The coconut stuff. I was so shocked that we weren't even asked what we wanted but simply plonked 2 unrequested poor desserts on our table that I have left this review. Wouldn't return and left no service.

Great appetizers!

By Smai32 |

Nice place to dine out with family... I personally love their appetizers especially the fried dumplings, fried shrimps and chicken satay ...food is really spicy. Staff is really courteous especially have been going there with my 3 kids and they always accommodate us the best possible way...

Good spicy food

By Epsen79 |

Rasa serves Malaysian food which is a blend of several of the different kitchens of Asia. They blend Indian, Chinese and other food. The food is spicy and well made. According to the staff this is the only Malaysian restaurant in NYC with certified Halal food.

Truly malaysian

By Alessandro V |

I had Sarawak Laksa It was delicious. No compromised with local expectation. I closed my eyes and I was back in KL. Honest prices

Great food, great value Asian food

By Lisa P |

We stumbled across this little gem trying to escape a NY snow storm. Very attentive and friendly service provided, food really tasty, good size serve without being ridiculous as per other meals ordered in NY. We enjoyed our lunch break very much.

Great Malaysian Restaurant in the Village - St. Marks Neighborhood

By Roseana W |

My husband and I accidentally found this little gem of a restaurant in the St. Marks area in the village this past Monday. The decor of this restaurant caught my attention and, seeing that this was Malay cuisine, we were intrigued to try. We were met by one of the chefs/proprietors (Cammie Lai), who gave us a little lesson on the style of Malay food and flavors, explaining the influences of the seasoning and cooking style, which is different from the Thai flavors. We ordered "Green Chicken Curry" and it was prepared to perfection. Another dish we tried was the Tom Yum Gai soup, which is Thai so that we could compare the flavors. Again, an excellent choice of a lunch. Both the ginger tea and the lime juices were refreshing on a very humid day. It is not every day that we find a favorite restaurant, but we are sure to return to this little corner again and again. The service, ambiance and food are very good. I fully recommend this restaurant.

OK for a quick bite

By Louise B |

I know coming from Sydney we are spoiled by the quality of Thai food available here so I should have lowered my expectations in NYC. With that in mind, Rasa was fine for a quick meal without being anything special for flavour. Reasonably priced.

Nice Malaysian Restaurant

By Edward W |

My friend and I ordered soft shell crab, flying fish, and grilled fish. All the dishes were very tasty. The staff members were very friendly.

Authentic Malaysian Food in Downtown Manhattan!!

By Aryo W |

Yummy, unexpected trip to find this wonderful gem in the MIDDLE OF GREENWICH VILLAGE! Great nasi krabu (the one with yellow or blue colored rice), great sweet Asian / Malaysian drinks, great hot sambal sauce. Everything was amazing... on top of that they have a very nice , attentive, kind staff. Love this, and have recommended this to many people, and have come back again for more great morsels !

Good and Fast

By Mark S |

Service was efficient and the food was good. The quaint restaurant is pretty nice but loud. the decor was nice and the place was clean.

Good Asian Cuisine. Abit pricey.

By Sufyan87 |

Was in New York City for holiday with the family and my mum wanted some Asian food. Did a search online and found this place. It is quite near a subway station followed by a short walk to the restaurant. We were seated really quick and they had a nice lunch menu. I chose the ayam lemak cili api (spicy but very nice) while my mum and sister shared their rendang dish. Food was served in about 10mins of waiting. It was very delicious. The rendang nicely cooked the beef, making it soft and chewy. Price was relatively expensive. Eg 3 USD for plain rice. The mains were about 12+ USD per item. On a side note, they also have japanese cuisine in their menu as well.

decent food

By meworldtraveller |

food was ok, the roti canai was the best part of the meal, the spring rolls were good too. I had the basil veggies and it was super dry no sauce. The roti canai was supposed to be veggie and in the middle of eating it i realized it had a chicken piece in there, the server apologized but it was a bit late would never return again, those are serious mistakes. there are better places in the city.

Dinner

By Anushka P |

Yummy food and great service! Fried shrimp wontons are to die for and the chicken and basil was good too.

Will come back if we live in NYC

By Cinte Shaari |

We arrived at 12 noon and we were the first customers. Ordered Roti Canai, Assam laksa, Cendol, Salted Eggs Prawn and Lamb Curry and asked all to be served together. Service was fast and waitress was friendly. I personally love their Roti Canai and the rest was delicious too. Pregnant mama went home happy.

tasteful 'Rasa'

By SHAI_ZAKARIA |

As per the name, this restaurant delivers. The taste (or rasa in Malay) was perfectly balanced and quite authentic and acceptable for this kind of restaurant outside of their homeland Malaysia. The menu is simple and showcasing the locals favourites like roti canai, char kuew teow, nasi lemak, fried rice, noodles and many more. At this trip I had the satay platters to start - there are quite tasty and the portion is just right for the appetizers. Then I moved on to my favourite Malaysian dish and apprently their chef's specialties - the Steamed Hainanese Chicken Rise. The chicken was very tasty but the rice lacks a bit of flavour to my liking - but they are still edible. I skipped the dessert this time around but finished it off with the Malaysian Classic Teh Tarik - black tea with condensed milk. This first visit was acceptable - although I do not quite understand the other part of the restaurant/menu that serves sushi. It is kinda confusing to have the the restaurant that is known and advertised as malay cuisine restaurant and at the same time have sushi etc in their menu - seems rather contradicting on the sales direction (and I don't see any malay/japanese sushi fusion in their menu either). Well, all in all this was an ok trip and met my expectation (I did not relly put too much expectation on it anyway). For those who visit, you must try their Roti Canai and the teh tarik - Classic comfort food of Malaysia xx

Cure for homesicknesses

Was in US for almost 2 months and looking forward to some local dishes. This placed served dishes from Malaysia and taste-wise is the closest to what you can find. Authentic!

Awesome!

Great authentic food. Went there with a groupon deal and war incredibly affordable. The menu has a lot of options and everything we had was great! I would definitely go back

Super close to truly Malaysia in New York!

By Mienal H |

The fried rice and fried noodles are amazing! Brought me back home to Malaysia Truly Asia! It is as close as it gets... sometimes exactly like in Malaysia!

Yum!

By MABM917 |

I have walked by this restaurant several times and always wanted to go in because Malaysian restaurants are few and far between. I was able to get a reservation for four last Saturday night. We ordered an assortment of appetizers which included mostly fried things and we also had some satay. We had beef redang, a noodle dish and an order of roti. Everything was delicious and the server was so great in advising us.

Delicious Malaysian

By Adrienne C |

This was my first time trying Malaysian in the city (or anywhere), and I was definitely not disappointed! My curry was super flavorful, the meat was very tender and the sauce was perfect on spice. This restaurant was also very nice since it catered to my friend who only eats halal food. Looking forward to trying more things on the menu next time!

Great Food!

Very authentic Malaysian cuisine. Great service, awesome food. The restaurant is very lively and has a small bar in the back of the restaurant.

Great Malaysian Thai Restaurant near Washington Square Park

By steveamer |

All four of our party made different selections from the menu and we all thoroughly enjoyed our Malaysian/Thai meal selections and the overall dining experience in the casual atmosphere of the Rasa Restaurant.

Great rendang

By pxb123 |

Dropped into this restaurant tonight and was pleasantly surprised. Service was friendly and quick. I have always heard about infamous beef rendang but never had one that I particularly liked until Rasa. What a great surprise. I will definitely return when back in NYC.

US Holidays 2014

By Ayah183 |

Another great Asian restaurant who craves for local dish back home while in New York City. Great selection of dishes to choose from. Atmosphere is good with ambient settings. Again a must to all while in NYC.

Not worth the money!!!

By Frequent_TravellerES |

I walked by this restaurant and felt intrigued to try it out. The ambience was ok and the staff was friendly. Only about 3 minutes after ordering my food, my beef Rendang was served. Obviously it was pre-cooked! Unfortunately the inner side of this curry was still cold!!!!!! Rasa team, for $19.... this was not a good job! I should have noticed that only three tables were occupied! Definitely not worth it!

Good dining experience

By beebahk |

My brother and I both ordered fish. One was fried; good thing the sauce was nice. The service was very decent and friendly, never too hurry to deliver service. Next time I go back I would order something else to try other items on the menu. Since the restaurant locates near two universities, the patrons were mostly young folks, making the atmosphere quite robust after a while! The lighting was a little dark to read the menu (and the colors of the menu did not help either!)

Great food

By MMMM1979 |

The eastern tastes were really great! Tons of flavour on fresh prepared dishes and friendly staff. Not a place for lengthy dinners.

Rasa Greenwich Village

By glenda/john |

There are many options for a restaurant night out in this part of New York. If you are not good then you don't survive. Rasa offers good quality with generous portions at a reasonable price. Standout dish for us was the soft shell crab. Delicious. Wine list was not extensive but did contain some excellent choices for food and wine matching. Most wine lists contain one or two bargains and for us it was the Oregon Pinot Grigio...from memory the label was Acrobat and a marvellous match with the crab and curries that we selected.

a taste experience

By Bernadette C |

Often when you go to Asian restaurants the food can taste the same no mater what you order. At Rasa we had 4 different taste experiences ..black cod with miso, a Chinese prawns dish (sorry I wasn't paying attention when this one was ordered so don't have the name), rendang beef and assam pedas with mackerel and okra in sour tamarind broth. All tasted distinct, different and delicious.

Never Disappoints

By si101503 |

Have been going fairly regularly since it opened and have always been happy. Many enticing Malaysian dishes, some close to Thai, many not. I've always found their signature soup and green curry to be wonderful. Very inexpensive given the quality. Very generous portions. Friendly atmosphere. Many young people, but older folk feel welcome, too.

Very good rendang

By QQ1234 |

This place is on 8th St about a block East of 6th Av. The rendang is very good. Authentic spices. The beef was very tender. Curry puffs good but no dipping sauce. My only complaint is that the waitress kept insisting that I have a beer. I hate beer and I don't appreciate hawking drinks. Otherwise, the service was OK. Decor is OK.

Highly recommended Halal restaurant in NYC

By TravelingAmos |

Really good food with very attentive service. The chicken satay appetizer is probably the best I've ever had.

Authentic Malaysian food!

By Lin1177 |

I ordered the nasi kerabu because I have always been a nasi kerabu fan (the blue colored rice) and loved every bite of it!! The rest of my family members ordered nasi lemak, kampung fried rice (let them know if you don't want it spicy), roti canai & roti telur and it did not disappoint!! Friendly owner & amazing staff. We shall return whenever we visit NYC in future.

Authentic Southeast Asian Restaurant

By MarC25 |

We have been on the lookout for a delicious and authentic Southeast Asian restaurant and we found it in Rasa. It offers a wide variety of specialty dishes from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. We liked that they cook the dishes the way you would in these countries. No fusion interpretation where the ethnic flavors get lost in the translation. Our favorites are their roti canai, nasi goreng (kampong fried rice in the menu), nasi lemak and Hainanese chicken. It is located within the NYU neighborhood downtown so the atmosphere is laid-back and informal and pricing reasonable. It is also halal, for those who are observing. We have been back many times and hope to continue to bring friends here.

Dinner out with great food after Halloween Parade

By ChiaraDelfini |

We discovered the restaurant after the Halloween Parade on 1st november at 12am. It was great. Relaxing and typical NYC atmosphere. Quick service, kind waiters and the menù full of a lot of good choices. We ate wonderful noodle spicy soups (penam assam laksa), soft shell crab and beer.

Kind of an oasis for Indian Food

By Madhu Menon |

While coming back from the visit to Statute of Liberty, we were actually craving for Indian Food and we found this place...and absolutely no regrets. The food was very close to home, the atmosphere, the ambiance was also very welcoming. The bartender was so kind, though he did not talk anything in Hindi, he guided us for a good drink and also taken the initiative to suggest the best food. Had really a good experience.

Sedap Sekali!!

By Sukamakan |

So happy after a week in USA I was dying for some Asian food the Singaporean in me! I could not believe my luck when I walked passed and saw the TA award for best Malaysian restaurant in NYC! Well deserved!

Airy, reasonable, and... delicious

By Been2Bagan |

This is a keeper. A group of four who have eaten authentic Malay and Indonesian food oohed and aahed over the scrumptious fare at Rasa. What's more we could converse at lunchtime without shouting. Service was very friendly and waiters were very knowledgeable about the menu and what went with what. We tried Laksa (soup), chicken mee goreng, nasi goreng, beef, shrimp and tofu from the lunch special, and it arrived with a lovely salad with Japanese dressing and a miso soup. The combination is intriguing - this place also serves sushi, which we didn't try this time. Nice wooden artifacts, pleasant space and great food. Lunch specials are very reasonable. Definitely going back!

Needed Asian food and they brought it!

By Tom B |

BIG MENU. Good prices and attentive staff. Sushi, Malay and Thai. Good food and appetizers. I'm from Hawaii and need my Asian food.

Would definitely visit Rasa Restaurant again! Delicious food at a respectable price!

By BenA |

Rasa is a very beautiful restaurant. You can see them preparing your food which is then served fresh to your table. The restaurant is quite popular in the evenings and is perfect for a meal with friends, group of professionals or to take your other half for a romantic date! we tried a variety of dishes and enjoyed all of the!

Fabulous food

By raziffjamaluddin |

Location near to Washington Part. Can be accessed through MTA. Need further walk approx 15mins. Size is small can accommodate around 30 patrons. Menu indonesian, malaysian and sushi. Halal restaurant. Price less than 20D with portion good for two. The best menu Nasi Goreng Kampung.

Authentic Malaysian!

By Abby82_10 |

Ever since travelling to Southeast Asia I have become obsessed with finding authentic Singapore/ Malaysian food in North America. I have to say that Rasa surpassed my expectations. First walking into the restaurant for a lunch on a Saturday, we were the only ones there and I thought maybe this place wasn't that popular after all. But there was no reason to worry - the food was amazing! We started off with the Roti Canai with delicious curry gravy and the fried soft shell crab. Both were excellent! For our main course we had the Nasi Lemak (exactly like in Singapore) and the Beef Rendang. Everything was delicious and I can't wait to go back and try more dishes! Ambiance (spacious, exposed brick walls) was nice and service was very family friendly and polite.

Almost Malay

By Carol O |

From what I can remember, Rasa does an adequate job of replicating some of the traditional Malaysian dishes. The roti canai had a nice taste to it and the roti was thick, unlike other restaurants that I've been to in the city. I went here for a birthday celebration with some girlfriends and they also enjoyed their meal. However, one ordered the lemongrass chicken and mentioned that the chicken was a little dry, though it was seasoned good. I don't know if that it supposed to be the texture, but it was enjoyed nonetheless. We also shared curry puffs, egg rolls, and a salad, all of which were brought out spaced out so we didn't feel overwhelmed by all the food. The restaurant definitely has nice ambiance, very relaxing. If you're in the area and want to try some Malay food, go for it.

Nice to find Malaysian food and this place is okay

By familyltravel |

I love Malaysian food and it is so difficult to find. The menu here has a good selection of Malaysian including Nasi Goreng and Curry Laksa. Not the best Malaysian food ever but definitely good enough for a second visit. I'll be back.

High quality food for reasonable price

By Andy P |

We were looking for a nice place to eat, good food, but not too fancy or expensive. Rasa was perfect. Four of us all enjoyed the food. They were very busy, but made space for us to sit and wait for a table, not a long wait. Food was excellent. I especially enjoyed the chicken lettuce wrap appetizer. Service was very nice. They let us sit for a while after we were done, continuing to fill our water glasses and otherwise left us alone. During the meal, if we needed something someone was there, but otherwise very unobtrusive. We will definitely go back!

Authentic gem

By Peter R |

Excellent authentic Malaysian fare in a pleasant atmosphere with excellent service. Found this restaurant by accident but was heartened to see Malaysians eating here. Then, from the first taste of the appetizers, it was clear it was the real McCoy. Loves the roti canai, kangkung balacan, beef rendang (tender and bursting with flavor), hainanese chicken rice, etc. I heard they also sell kaya. All told was a culinary treat and intend to become a regular.

Really good Thai and Japanese food.

By suzyd43 |

Excellent Thai food. We had the drunken noodles which are wide noodles with basil, peppers, bamboo shoots and a fish sauce. Absoutely delicious. The curry is good here too, You can get sushi as well that is fresh and tasty. The prices are a bit high but it is typical for NYC.

Delicious Sunday lunch

By 0_phel1a |

Attended a networking-movie-lunch event and was pleasantly surprised with the dishes on offer. I ordered the kampung fried rice and my friend had char kueh teow, both of which were very close to what I would get back home. And since it was a special event, we had teh tarik and nyonya kuih which we couldn't get enough of. The restaurant owner was especially friendly too.

This was a wonderful discovery for us! Ambiance was warm and comfortable. Service was friendly and helpful. We also met the chefs sister/co-owner Camie who was really friendly. We started with the Roti Canai which was accompanied by curry chicken for dipping. The roti was a little on the doughy side but the curry chicken was very tasty. My hubby ordered his fave Hokkien Prawn Noodles which he found extremely delicious and authentic despite this being a pork-free (halal) version. I had the Char Kueh Teow which was very well done. The dish had the aroma of 'wok hei' which is an aroma that is associated with a very hot wok and definitely something required for this preparation. We also had the Chili Crab which was beautifully prepared and served with fried 'steamed buns' for dipping. We finished our meal with the Sago with coconut milk and palm sugar and the Apam Balik, a traditional street dessert. Excellent! Will look forward to dining here again! Thanks Chef!

Great Malaysian food

By monsgrantmorg |

Stumbled across this restaurant on a recent trip to NYC when we were dying for something spicy. The roti were very nice and the chicken satay was excellent, had the chicken curry extra hot and it was beautiful. 1 of us had the chilli crab, the sauce was excellent in that dish. The service was exceptional, very fast! Just what the doctor ordered.

Authentic Malaysian (the rest looked good too)

By embeesyd |

Offering a wide selection of soup, salad, starters, stir-fry, entrees and chef's specials, the only problem was narrowing down a choice. The Malaysian options we chose were delicious, and the service and ambience excellent.

Great Food

Nice range of food - Malaysian, Indoesian, & Thai. I had Mee Horn Goring ($21) with chicken - excellent. We also had the Malaysian Combo appetizer ($16) with satay chicken, curry puffs and murtabaks. We will return. Good service. Very good value. Dinner for two for $80.

AVERAGE FOOD; OVERPRICED!

The food is average at best but is priced like white cloth dining (which it certainly isn't)! Service admittedly was fine but still doesn't justify the price!

Great Food When you’re in NY

By Rater Reviewer |

When my family and I went to Manhattan, we were looking for different types of places and not just like burgers, pizza, etc. Then we saw this place “Rasa”. When we walked in the interior was clean and polished and looked nice. I ordered noodles (I dont remember which one) It was really good and probably the best I’ve ever eaten. My whole family really liked the food. If I’m ever in Manhattan again we will for sure come here again!

Superb Malaysian at a great price!

Excellent selection of some great Malaysian favorites that made the choice of a meal tough. Service was quick and the restaurant offered a friendly funky vibe perfect for a night out.

Great Malaysian-Indonesian

Great Malaysian-Indonesian blend. In the middle of busy W 4 st area, it’s the right choice to have roti canai, chicken satay, or coconut curry which all unexpectedly good. Bring friends or family!

Cheap Set lunch ... there's a very good reason

By nomadzenn |

I ordered the clear broth noodles. I came not with noodles but vermicelli, and with bland pieces of chicken that tasted like stiff cardboard. The broth tasted worst than canned chicken stock. I wouldn't pay even a cent of this tripe. Very disappointing. My lunch companion had the mee goreng with seemed to be better. If the clear broth "noodles" is so disgusting, why put it on the menu?

Great Malaysian Lunch

Came with group of friends for weekday lunch. Food was very good. Ample portions and excellent service. I would definitely return!

So good!

My husband and I ate here twice during a recent trip to NYC. Our hotel was in the same block. The first time it was just the two of us and the second time we were a party of 11. Both times the staff was very accommodating and quickly made room for us. The food was delicious. Our favorite dishes were the massaman curry and drunken noodles. I also had a very yummy mango cocktail. Everyone in our party of 11 thoroughly enjoyed their dinner.

Great local Malaysian

Rasa was only a few doors away from our hotel, and we were lucky enough to enjoy a delicious meal there one night. Calamari, Laksa and Mee Goring - all delicious and authentic flavours. Definitely recommend.

Get the char kuay teow

By Melanie T |

Made ressos for 6 people (4 adults + 2 babies) for a Sunday at 1. Not everyone arrived until 1:30 but luckily they were able to accommodate us, which was much appreciated, especially with babies. To start, I had the iced butterfly pea yuzu tea. It was nice and refreshing, and not too sweet. For food, we decided to order a bunch of things to share: -Satay tofu puffs - the satay sauce was really good. This comes with 7 pieces -Roti canai - can’t go wrong with roti canai. The curry it came with for dipping was great. Although for $10, I would have expected the roti to be a bit bigger -Char kuay teow (rice noodles with chives, bean sprouts, eggs & soy sauce with chili sauce) - this is usually my go to dish at Malaysian spots and it did not disappoint. Usually, it’s make with thin rice noodles but here, they used broad noodles, which I actually preferred because I love me some broad noodles. The flavor was great - plenty of wok hei. For the noodle and rice dishes, you can choose your protein (shrimp, tofu, chicken, beef, squid, seafood). We went with the shrimp and they gave us plenty of plump pieces of shrimp. 10/10 would order again -Kampong fried rice (eggs, onions, sambal anchovies, chili, carrots, peanuts, shrimp paste, cucumbers, and an egg on top - for the protein, we went with shrimp and again, they give a good amount. The fried -Mee Hoon Goreng (thin rice noodles with bean sprouts, carrots, scallion, eggs, fried shallots, with chili sauce) -Hainanese chicken - the chicken was overcooked and a bit dry. It also looked darker than most Hainan chicken. The rice and the ginger chili sauce were good though The food is good but not Chinatown good and of course, not Chinatown prices. The portions are also smaller. But if you’re looking for good Malaysian/Singaporean food and you don’t want to trek to Chinatown, then Rasa is a great option.

Vibrant, Great Food and Autenthic

We were told they are the first halal Malay restaurant in the city and have won awards for their food. The ambiance and decor was pretty nice, service was good and the food was great. We ordered the Roti Canai (the nan which is like a parata is very good), Satay Chicken, Malay Curried Wings, Tom Yam With Chicken or Shrimp, Crispy Fried Chili Chicken (very nice), Rendang Beef (award winning dish), Lamb Curry & Sushi (Maki Combo C). The food was delicious, the starters come with 4 pieces of each item. For dessert we had banana fritters and the ochi ochi (amazing) Well worth a visit, highly recommended.

Been wanting to eat here for a while. It is not fancy but the food is great and the people were very friendly and accommodating. I had the Sarawak Laksa which was delicious.

Genuine Malaysian food at a good price in the West Village

By Adrian B |

Two of us went for an early dinner here because it was close to our hotel and because we both love Malaysian food. Service was excellent, prices were good and the food we had was as authentic as any we've had either at Malaysian restaurants at home in Australia or when visiting Malaysia. Good food, friendly and efficient staff and good prices; can't ask for much more from a restaurant.

Great food and atmosphere

By Susan B |

I stopped here for lunch solo after taking a walking tour of Greenwich village. It was a cold, snowy day and I enjoyed my lunch tremendously. I had the beef rendang, and it was very tasty. Service was quite and efficient. The restaurant was busy but not overly noisy, even with a large party with several children nearby.

The food and service are excellent. The Malasian curried tofu was yummy. It is two doors down from the hotel at which we stayed. Perfect choice for dinner or lunch.

Very authentic

Really great & vibrant atmosphere. Fast and friendly service. The whole place reminded me of restaurants in Thailand. The Lamb Curry was very flavorful, but the Beef Basil was really outstanding. Thanks, hope to see you again soon.
