Good food, lacking service

By Cherry T |

We were strolling along the Riverwalk and the menu looked good. The hostess never smiled kind of waved over at a table by the water and gave us silverware and menus before walking away. Barely a greeting. We waited several minutes, no one came near us, we were just getting ready to leave when a server came rushing up and apologized for the wait. She was going to go into her explanation and we let her know it was okay. That was the high point of the service. The food was good, my husband had the Enchilada lunch special with chicken and I ordered the fajita lunch special with beef. I decided against it, their tea and coffee, they were over priced at $3 so we stuck with water. She brought our chips and salsa, the chips were hot and crispy, the salsa had a nice bite. Our food was really good. MIne was too much for one meal. As we were waiting for our check and to request a go box we heard our server mention to the table behind us it was almost happy hour and explained to them what was covered. Didn't mention it to us. I'm sorry the service was so lacking because my fajitas had good flavor and the beef was really tender.

Awful

By GypsySoul |

This place has a worst cocktails in a whole world! They don't look bad, but they taste terrible! We order mojito and strawberry daiquiri, and there was no taste of anything . We told server that cocktails are not the one that we've order, he tried to convince us that they are done as they suppose to be, but at the end he said that he'll call his manager. Manager didn't have a courage to show up, he just send a server to talk us that manager solved everything.. We didn't payed anything, but that was not the point. They should be ashamed of allowing some people to sell sth like that! We are happy that we haven't tried their food and sorry that we haven't checked reviews before we choose that terrible place!

Christmas on The Riverwalk

By OnlyWifey |

Food was good but was disappointed no a la carte or combination plates were offered on the menu. Portions were very large and for a small eater, waste of $$$ as we are travelling. Had chalupas which were okay and husband had a burrito. Con quesa was made with jack cheese instaed of cheddar or mexican cheese. Not a lot of flavor. Highlight was sitting on the Riverwalk watching the barges full of carollers go by.

Delicious.

By dpina88 |

We just had the frozen margaritas here during our visit to the river walk. They were delicious and packed a punch lol I'm picky about my salsas but man!!! I wanted to bottle theirs up and take some home with me. It was delicious enough to drink! We weren't really hungry when we came, we just wanted to drink but I can't wait to go back to try what else is on the menu!

Have the swirl margarita

By AcoffeeJunky |

Wandering around the river walk and wanted a margarita. Kat(our server) suggested the strawberry swirl. Totally delicious! All of the servers were nice, even though we weren't their table, they all smiled and said hello. Great little place.

Delicious dinner and drinks!

By Michal D |

I really wanted Mexican food on our visit to San Antonio and was hoping to find a place without much of a wait which I knew would be nearly impossible in summertime on a Friday night. I was very happy when we came here to find there was no wait! We got a second floor table overlooking the riverwalk in a very well cooled room which was great for how hot it was!! They also had outdoor seating with misting fans which felt great but the rest of my family wanted inside. My mango swirl margarita was excellent and the beef fajitas portion was huge and pretty tasty. Our waitress was great and kept our thirst quenched and stomachs very full and satisfied.

Good food, service lacking

By Ronna H |

The food was good with large portions. The service was not so good. Drink refills were non-existent.

Food was OK— Service was AWFUL - view was nice

By Belinda G |

We ordered chicken fajitas, side salad, and soup. Our meal was OKAY (nothing extraordinary, but nothing that would make sick either)....Our server said he was sleep deprived and it was definitely noticeable in his service. He messed up our order, but after waiting for two hours we were afraid to say anything. He wasn’t rude, but he was definitely not happy to be serving food in that moment. It should say something that we had a better service at another restaurant where you pay the server to be mean to you as part of your dining experience! To me, their ambiance was no different than any other mexican food restaurant along the Riverwalk. Nothing authentic to leave me hungry to come back for more.... Just my experience and opinion—

Keep walking

By Bryan W |

I should have just left when the chips in salsa came out. The chips literally looked and tasted like generic tortilla chips from the store, the salsa wasn't much better. I ordered the chicken fajitas and they were not good at all. How do you screw up chicken? Also, to my surprise, they had craft beer. It was good enough that I wanted to figure out what I ordered. The waitress told me it was called Busted Sandal. After some research, I realized that was the brewery, not the name of the beer. Guess what, Busted Sandal makes a lot of beers, so I'll never know what I had and I certainly won't be back to find out.

Solid TexMex. Steak Rancheros 👍

By BDJ6969 |

My wife and I got into town on our honeymoon and wanted to unwind and see some of the city. We had not plans that night. We ended up down by the Riverwalk and pretty hungry. There are plenty of options and we settled on something we could be seated at pretty quickly. We got the beef nachos which have plenty for 2 and enough for 4. The waiter had a personal recommendation of the releno rancheros but we decided on the steak which also came highly recommended. It was delicious. We cut it with a butter knife. Also 9pm starts the second happy hour.

Delicious Tex-Mex

By S4136XSdavidb |

We visited on a chilly, damp day, but sat outside along the Riverwalk under heat lamps to watch the people and boats go by. We were quite comfortable. The guacamole and chips appetizer was huge, and the food was very good. The waitstaff was busy but efficient. The margarita was just average. They have lots of beer, mostly Mexican brews, on tap. We have eaten at many restaurants on the river, but Rio Rio is near the top.

Really good margaritas

By Goombagirl1 |

Attended a private party here where the the whole riverwalk level was reserved for us. All of the servers were very good & attentive. The margaritas are so delicious - I started with the prickly pear but my favorite was the blueberry margarita. It's a Regular margarita with blueberry purée. So yum. The chips are so light & yummy. The veggie quesadilla was also very good. I had never stopped in before but I'll be back for that blueberry margarita.

We had a great meal!

By Karen S |

After a long day of driving (scenic tour from Waco, leaving thunderstorms, through wildflowers in Fredericksburg), we were ready to experience the sunshine along the riverwalk and enjoy some Tex Mex food. We picked Rio Rio because the guacamole looked good (and it was!)! I ordered the tortilla soup, and my husband ordered the chicken fajitas. We both enjoyed our meals, and brought enough leftovers back to our hotel to have lunch tomorrow (fortunately, our Homewood Suites room has a frig and a kitchenette)! Luis, our server, was friendly, attentive, and very helpful (we asked a lot of questions)!

Authentic Tex-mex.

By Illinidmd |

We ate here on a Wednesday. It was fairly full at lunch time. We walked past on a Saturday night... it was packed.

a pleasant brunch

By BabsJ1964 |

We had brunch on a Monday morning and it was quite nice. It was a good time to be on the River Walk as it wasn't too crowded. It's situated in a great part of the River Walk. We ate outside next to the river. The ducks kept us entertained begging for food as we enjoyed a nice lunch and down time. Service was good and food was tasty. No complaints.

Saturday night visit after traveling from the east coast

By TJB567 |

We settled on this place b/c we were hungry and the Riverwalk was super crowded due to a festival. Wait staff seemed a little distracted but effective enough. Ordered the veggie quesadilla - HUGE portion and very tasty. Think my co-workers were satisfied with their choices. Just a lot going on with the bustling river walk.

Average

By Grandma47 |

We had just arrived in San Antonio and selected this restaurant because of location on River walk. The service was slow, even though they weren't busy. On the plus side, the order of chips and salsas is huge, enough for 4. The entrees are large enough to share.

Amazing Tex Mex

By Elisabeth B |

We sat on the river's edge and enjoyed a delicious dinner. Food was hot, fresh and authentic. Our waiter was attentive but not obtrusive. He made mene suggestions that were exactly what we told him we were looking for.

Just as average as the rest.

By Breezevacations2016 |

Dropped in early evening during Happy Hour. The place was deserted! Found someone to ask if they were open. They were, it was just that everyone prefers to sit outside on one of their two levels, one on the balcony, the rest on the Riverwalk. Justin was our wait staff & was very good. Our food arrived in good time and, while nothing outstanding, was good in both flavor & proportion size. Nothing negative to say about this place, but nothing outstanding either.

Fresh food and nice atmosphere

By footdoc99 |

Enjoyed a dinner for a business function with limited menu. The appetizers and salad were fresh. The peppered filet mignon entree was perfectly cooked to order. The tiramisu completed the meal. Although I anticipated having Mexican fare, the food was well prepared and service was very good.

Don't go solo

By Karen R |

When I arrived, the hostess ignored me and helped others before me. Then, I was seated in the area where bus boys congregate. They continually leaned over my table during lunch. I was in the corner seat where the fan was broken in the mid day heat. Finally, a waitress came by and said they had been wondering where I had been seated. She was nice and provided good service. Food was prepared contrary to my order for no sour cream. Really recommend you select one of the many other Mexican restaurants unless you will be favored with good service here.

Amazing Mexican food along the Riverwalk with an outside ambieance

By Phyllis H |

We had a delicious Mexican meal and enjoyed it while sitting along the San Antonio Riverwalk. Waitress was so helpful and we were thrilled the location was our choice. An excellent choice out of many!

Poor Service

By kasjdnmduyfnfgklciem |

I'll caveat this by saying we ate here during the weekend of the final four so the entire River Walk was mobbed. Our food took a long time to arrive and when it did it was delivered to the wrong table, then picked up and redelivered to ours. We also ordered some queso as an appetizer which was delivered not long before our main food and had a thick skin on top, presumably from sitting under a heat lamp waiting for it to be brought out. I had the chalupas which weren't very good at all. My wife and son had steak fajitas which they thought were pretty good. May be better for drinks with a view vs having lunch or dinner.

Good stop for a quick drink along the river walk

By Peter Kenimer |

Very small place prices are ok if not a bit high, but I got a fantastic strawberry infused margarita which was good.

Not what it used to be

By Rbcampbell1974 |

Years ago this was a favorite place to people watch on the river walk and enjoy fajitas. Now it’s still a good view but the food is poor and expensive. Service is slow and unfriendly. The fajitas were promised to have grilled onions peppers. When they arrived there were no peppers. Also first time I’ve seen fajitas served without cheese. The chips and tortillas were stale, tasteless and obviously store bought. The salsa was mediocre. I will avoid this restaurant in the future and suggest you do too!

Packed house but still good service, good food.

By Roger M |

Got to Rio Rio around 6:00pm on the day after Christmas. Really did not expect it to be as crowded as it was. We ended up waiting about 20 minutes, but the entire Riverwalk was crowded, so this is not a knock on Rio Rio. After we were seated on the patio, service was very good. Food was good, Margaritas were strong, weather was warm enough outside. We will return to Rio Rio.

Italian

By ZeebruggeExplorer |

This was on the River Walk and is with the Naked Iguana. I had some good food and my husband had three salsas that were good.

Sour Drink

By RiceWP |

My wife and I stopped in for a drink while walking the Riverwalk. This was upstairs and not crowded. Seems there was a good reason why. We ordered to house margaritas and when they came they were so sour they were barely drinkable. I should've read the trip advisor reviews first before stopping. I would've found someplace else.

Troubling Review?

By Greg F |

Michael, our server, started out very good and made excellent drink suggestions and was trying very hard. It did not appear he had much support from other staff when he got busy. He himself was very good so I am unhappy to be able to only give this establishment an 'average' rating but in truth, it should be lower.

Riverwalk Family Dinner

By JBrown41 |

Had dinner with family. A little pricey for what you get but not too surprised given that it is on the Riverwalk. Little surprised that chips and salsa was not standard and had to pay extra. The food was good not great. Had a large Margarita and couldn't taste any alcohol in it. Not good; not a fan of watered down drinks, particularly at $15...happy hour not so happy😞

Good food at a great price

By sass711 |

We were seated quickly and got chips and salsa. The salsa was mild and very good. The refried beans were delicious; they had a smoky flavor to them. They are open 24 hours as well.

view was nice and it stopped there

By Purplepix9 |

we ate a late breakfast there and will not go back. slow service, french toast was soggy in the middle, wrong food brought to us. The prices on the bill were higher than the menu. Expensive coffee. Not worth the money.

YUMMY!

By ilovebaseball0302 |

Great service, Great Food! We had a 45 minute wait, which was not unusual for anywhere on the river-walk.

Questionable chalupas

By Renee S |

After a long day at a conference me and my friends were looking to eat along the Riverwalk. Of course so did the rest of the conference participants so it was very busy. We ended up at Rio Rio where we were seated after a 20min wait. Ordered margaritas and mojitos which were packing a big punch. Although allergies were mentioned very clearly we ended up sending back one of the plates because the allergenes in question were there in plain sight. The seasoning was off on all dishes and the dough was chewy in a bad way. If you're looking for a stiff drink, this is your place, otherwise walk on by.

Good food and ambiance.

By dd78746 |

We were able to get a table rather quickly by the river walk. The Margaritas, Mexican food and the mariachi band were quite a treat for our guests.

Brilliant service and great locatin

By AnselmColom |

We were served by Mike this evening. Don't think we have been served by someone so hospitable or polite. He wanted to go the extra mile on everything. If your having Margaritas get the $10 ones with freshly squeezed lime. His choice and he was right. We sat right on the river with the duck waiting for scraps and nachos the whole time. Food was lovely. Had fajitas, enchiladas and tacos between the 3 of us. A very pleasant evening. Not for someone that does not like pigeons. This is outside after all. You can sit inside. Not cheap but there is a lot more expensive to choose. I would say this is midrange. Thank you Mike for a great evening. A credit to the restaurant.

Rio Rio

By Antonio F |

Best Margaritas Down Town,River Walk . Plus if you hit the "Happy Hour" they cost $ 4.00 a peace. The River Walk was very busy but we wait for a table by the river side walk

Great lunch and happy hour menu

By Greg F |

Walking down river walk found this restaurant was thirsty and hungry. Well they took very good care of us. Wife had a beerarita. Very large margarita with a bottle of dos exxis beer in it. My son and I had enchiladas plate with tacos. Wife had enchiladas plate that was free with purchase of beerarita. $18.00. Was a good deal as she had help drinking it. All n all good experience. Attentive wait staff good food n good drinks. Will be back next time in San Antonio

Not the Best Tex Mex

By ShaLouise |

Food is very ordinary. Probably prepared well in advance of serving. Little pieces of chicken in my tacos. Beans were exceptionally spicy. Also, brrrr, very cold!

Anniversary dinner

By Whiskeyhope |

My husband and I decided to give this place a try based on the reviews we read. Our waitress, Venus, was amazing. Very friendly and attentive. We ordered salsa, queso and chips to start, along with a large strawberry margarita. The salsa and queso was very tasty. My only complaint is the chips were mostly broken and made it hard to dip. We ordered the mixed fajitas. Our food arrived quickly and looked good and for the most part tasted good. I think they prepare their fajitas ahead of time as it didn't come out smoking and sizzling and was warm not piping hot and the veggies weren't fully sautéed. We told our waitress it was our Ann and they gave us a discount on our bill, which was very nice. All in all we will return for the salsa, queso and margarita's.

Friendly & Fast Service but disappointing food.

By carrot9936 |

Best thing here are the margarita's... very disappointed in the meals both for myself & my husband. Go somewhere else to eat dinner

Unimpressive but good Margarita

By Jess H |

Went there for dinner on a Wednesday. Ordered queso to accompany chips and salsa. It was tepid and lacked flavor. Chips were similar to what you would purchase from a grocery store. Decided to not order a formal dinner and had a quesadilla. It was okay but nothing impressive. Margaritas were good but overall food experience was lack luster. Disappointed overall. Good stop for a margarita on the go, but skip the food.

Epics portions, long happy hour!

By Brandon K |

A 100% must stop if you are feeding 4 or more! Great location and we got a table right on the water. We came during happy hour (3pm-6pm), great cheap drinks. We found the !!$50!! family fajita sampler, it says it feeds 4, but it will feed 6 adults a nice lunch portion or 8 if you have any kids! It is massive and affordable, we took leftovers! Service was amazing and super attentive even at a busy time. We also enjoyed the local Mariachi bands playing in front of the restaurant but there was no pressure for them to play for us.

Good fast service!

By Brianinsc1 |

Good food especially the bacon. Service was exceptional! Thank God they had sweet tea! We did the breakfast experience on short notice. Eggs had cheese and even received salsa and chips before dining? Great job Rio Rio!

Average TexMex food on River Walk

By Thomas V |

This is very average TexMex with high River Walk prices. I had the beef chimichanga which was about a pound but filled mostly with refried beans, cheese and “stewed” ground beef with carrots and potatoes. Probably 2 ounces of beef with 14 oz filler. Came with tasteless rice and charro beans. Much better food around the Walk so not worth stopping.

Good service, but not so good food

By Bonnie J |

We stopped here because we were hungry and it was convenient. After we were seated we looked on trip advisor. Definitely should have taken the time before hand. Our server was very attentive. We couldn’t have ask for him to be any better. The food just wasn’t good. I ordered the chimichanga and it was definitely the worse I’ve ever had. My husband had the taco salad. It was different, not as bad as mine, but neither of us would eat here again.

Mexocan Food on the River

By stOOOge |

Quick bite one evening on the Riverwalk in San Antonio. This place sits right on the river. It was chilly this night so we were seated under the roof where the ceiling heaters were on. Made for a comfortable environment and we could still see the river, the boats and those strolling by. Mariachi band livened up the place during dinner. We chose to share a 3 enchilada plate with chicken filling and an interesting green sauce. Charro beans and rice of course along with chips and salsa. Margaritas of course. The star was a great dessert of a plate of churros. Sweet with sugar and cinnamon and vanilla taste and whipped cream to dip. Took a while to get them, but a wonderful sweet indulgence.

Great waitstaff and fun

By S6blr |

Don't be confused by the prices as you get a lot of food for what you spend. Highly recommend Top .Shelf margaritas with Patron Gold Anejo!

Nice dinner with the family!

By Huffman4 |

We were actually going to eat at another restaurant nearby but they were booked all night, so we ended up at Rio Rio. We asked how long the wait was (on a Saturday night) and they immediately sat us at a table outside. The waitress showed up immediately and took our drink order. The drinks were great (margaritas and sodas) and the chips and queso were good as well. We ordered the combo fajitas and the quesadillas and both were very tasty. We also got desserts (chimichanga cheesecake and the churros) both of which were pretty good as well. It wasn't a knock your socks off dinner, but it was your typical Tex-Mex fare you'll find in most Mexican restaurants.

Lunch and margaritas

By LVSquared |

My steak ranchero was perfect, and the margaritas were on point. The margaritas are a little small for the price, since the other restaurants we passed were sizeable, but they were still delicious. Our server was attentive, even though we sat outside, and everything came quickly and cooked well. The fish tacos needed a bit more fish, although the red sauce helped a lot.

Ok stop on riverwalk

By Stevey1631 |

We lucked out on thanksgiving sat. Needed some food so 5:30 before the rush stoped here. Happy hour beer & margaritas good. Encillada verde with chicken , rice and beans was good. A good value at $30 for two. If you think drinks and snacks ok don’t expect the best Tex mex you’re good

Great veggie option!

By Lisa H |

On vacation & none of the 8 menus of restaurants down here at the river have veggie options, I gave up & stumbled upon this one!! & Hello! Veggie option that was 95% veggies & probably 5% cheese - my rule is always make the best choice I can from options when I’m out of my normal area

Great margaritas

By bsallstx |

Great food but a little touristy for me. The drinks were great. The food was good also...I would recommend the barbacoa burrito.

Drinks Before Dinner

By surfinbird81 |

Dropped in on a very busy Friday night for drinks as we had dinner reservations nearby. Had some good draft beers which were cold. Place was a mess with water all over the floor and tables dirty. Constant flow of tourist in and out which kept the place very busy. Bartender did a nice job of handling all of the order and she was attentive even while busy.

Best Margaritas

By julie c |

This place has the best mexican food..it was so good we went back the second night...and to top it off...the fronzen Sangria Margarita is wonderful

Great Margaritas

By debraa131 |

Wines outside overlooking The River walk. Great view, great house margaritas, but I thought the food was a little bland, especially the rice and beans. It was ok, but with all the places to eat on The Riverwalk, I would choose another Mexican restaurant.

Pretty good Margarittas

By Pilot-Mike558 |

Nice atmosphere on the river. Good service and food. Really enjoyed the margaritas. Great place for a date.

I would say the best part was the margarita, except it was $15!

By Courtney R |

My husband was very excited to try this restaurant when he saw an ad with a picture of their tacos. Upon being seated, we waited quite awhile for service. We ordered chips and salsa (not complimentary). We found the salsa tasteless. Ordered some expensive queso that also wasn't very good. My husband and I ordered margaritas ($15 each) which tasted good, but we decided to cut our losses before ordering dinner. So we chose to leave, and still had a pretty high check! We won't return.

Awful

By Gabriel N Mary C |

Food was awful and took too long to get food. The waiter could not get the food to the right person. The food was cold. The enchiladas had no cheese.

Slow, bad service!

By tcoopz |

My wife and I attempted to eat at Rio's tonight and ordered the Fiesta Feast dinner. It's $39 and has about half pound of faita meat (chicken and beef). The person brought out the dinner forgot to bring plates and tortillas and she she would be right back with them. Also, the waiter came by 10 minutes later and said the same thing. 15 minutes later we stl.did not have plates and tortillas so we left. Very bad service!!!

Good food, great margaritas, awesome service

By darinhk |

Here on memorial day this year with some friends. Glenn, our waiter, it was awesome. We were seated very quickly. The margaritas were awesome. The fajitas were terrific, especially the steak. The chicken was a little dry, to be honest, but Glenn received that information graciously and assured us he would pass it along to the kitchen. I'd say the best thing about the experience was our waiter. He was attentive without being overbearing, helpful without being pushy, and friendly without being intrusive. Just a great guy, and made our lunch experience even better.

Not great

By Elm22 |

This restaurant does offer riverside dining, but the food isn't very good. Don't confuse the name of this place with "Casa Rio", which is actually great! Go there instead.

Yummy!

By scarymary73 |

Great Mexican food! This was a great place on the River Walk to stop and grab some dinner. We enjoyed the margaritas along with their fajitas.

Good Mexican but kinda touristy

By David W |

We were looking for an authentic Mexican experience but probably set our goal too high. This was good food but felt very touristy. Our seats were wedged in between two rooms where it felt more like a hallway than a dining room. We probably should have taken a seat on the river but asked to go inside because of the intense heat.

Disappointing

By PA_Traveler_7 |

On the plus side, the employees that we saw were friendly and trying their best. Unfortunately, that’s the only plus for this visit. On a Monday afternoon, there was still a 25 minute wait- and once we placed our order, another 35-40 minute wait for our food. The food was ok, but several in our party said it wasn’t hot enough. To be fair, some aspects of our visit weren’t the fault of Rio Rio, such as the amount of construction happening nearby, the birds that were constantly around, and the lack of help they, and pretty much every, restaurant is suffering from at this time. That said, it all added up to a disappointing experience for our family that travelled 1800 miles to dine on the famous Riverwalk.

Fun and Yummy!

By alphagirl63 |

Spent two different Happy hours at Rio Rio. The $4 margaritas are perfect in size and taste. The chips and salsas are equally tasty and the chips are warm! We enjoyed the people-waching and boats going by on the river. This is a great way to gather with friends for an afternoon drink and snacks. They also have a full menu but we were already going to evening evnets. next time!

Great drinks!

By Victoria H |

This was our first stop after finding our way to the River Walk. We didn't order a full meal, just some snacks and drinks. The service was very good and the food was, too. We sat outside, along the edge of the RiverWalk. The restaurant is on the upper level, so you get a good view of the river, and of the wildlife flitting about and climbing in the trees.

Best Mexican on the river walk

By rmclane |

This is our go to restaurant for Tex-Mex on the river. It never disappoints and is inexpensive too! Great for large groups, families or just couples for a romantic dinner.

Good Snacks On the Riverwalk

By Gumgrove |

This is a restaurant located right on the Riverwalk. We tried it for a late afternoon snack and drink. Friendly service and great selection of Tex-Mex cuisine. Sit along the river and watch the ducks paddling by.

Not good!

By Sir Cumference |

When we got to the restaurant, it was pretty much in the middle of the lunch rush... and the place was pretty much dead. Should have been my first clue. Our table had to be wiped down before we could sit... which considering the "crowd" that was there... this should have been taken care of long before we got there. My daughter and I ordered the fajita beef burrito. She requested they leave out the onions and green peppers and put the verde sauce on the side.. I asked that mine be made as described on the menu. When it came out, her verde sauce was all over her burrito.... so they had to take it back. When I cut into mine, there were no peppers and onions as my daughter had requested hers. I was hungry and we were already waiting on one plate to return and by that time my wife's enchiladas were getting cold, so I ate it. My daughter found a piece of paper or some type of plastic stuck to her plate when they returned her burrito. So when the check came, they didn't charge us for hers. The food was edible, not the greatest..... not the worst. However, mistakes by the kitchen staff and the cleanliness made for a bad visit. They

Decent food

By Depplep |

We just wanted some guacamole and chips. Stopped here for a pre lunch snack. Seated outside quickly. Waiter that we had was quite slow, he did have two big parties but we waited longer than usual to get refills on drinks and a few sides as well as a wait for the check. Guacamole was good as was the queso and chips. Salsa was more like tomoato sauce. Had to put tabasco in it to give it some kick, but to be fair to Rio Rio, nowhere on RiverWalk did we find any hot salsa. House margarita was fine but not great.

Horrified parents

By Brad S |

Absolutely horrible place. We went here for a birthday party since it is located right on the river. We went in for a family lunch party. There were 9 of us we all ordered what was very over priced plates and appetizers. We brought my sons girlfriend with us trying to make a good impression. Little did we know going in just how bad things would turn out. First all of our meals were wrong. We had a vegetarian with us who got beef in their food, another who asked for steak and got cheese and so on like this. Our waitress was brand new and had no idea how to take care of 9 people at one table. We tried multiple times to get wait staff assistance but they just giggled and kept walking ignoring us. We finally got a managers to come by. This male manager started yelling and arguing with my 18 year old son who was simply trying to explain how our experience was so wrong. We finally had a gm come by only after requesting a corporate number to contact. This lady told us it was a family owned restaurant. They refused to comp our meal which was all sent back and most was not eaten. They proceeded to give us a $270 bill telling us we ate it. Save yourself the agony and avoid this place

Tex Mex!

By Diana W |

Had an early dinner here. It was very good. The margaritas were good and loved the music from the mariachias. It is a tourist destination but fun anyway

Incredible Fajita meat

By tomhenrytx |

My wife and I had dinner here one night while in San Antonio for our Anniversary. We sat outside, upstairs. The Service was fine. We enjoyed watching the people pass below on the Riverwalk. However, what really blew us away was the quality of the food. I got combo Fajitas, and my wife got soft chicken tacos. The meat was some of the best that I have ever had. We enjoyed the meal.

Tex Mex on hte River Walk

Tex mex eatery as are virtually 80% of the places on River Walk. Provides for good scenery and people watching - food is good.

Lazaro is a great server!

Good food recommendations, excellent service, and a waiter who obviously loves his job! He took excellent care of us and had the best manners.

Great service ,Rio Rio restaurant ,San Antonio Riverwalk ,Texas

We went to Rio Rio restaurant Riverwalk San Antonio, Texas. Our server, Chris, was charming, helpful, and delightful. He helped with recommendations for our meals that did not disappoint. We enjoyed our meals and were very satisfied. Thank you, Chris. Noelly F.

Wonderful Service, Great View, Good Food

By Audry K |

We were told about a 45-minute wait (short considering how crowded the Riverwalk was during spring break), and they sat us in under 20 minutes. Yes, the pricing is a little more than normal for the type of dishes, but it is right on the Riverwalk. Beautiful view and an unbeatable atmosphere. Our waitress, Vanessa, was so polite and served us with a smile and was friendly enough to not just set down our food in a rush. She really cared about what she was doing and it showed in how she talked to us and we felt like we were just as important as her other tables even with the crowd. Great, attentive server. My Enchiladas Verdes were delicious and had a great amount of flavor. They could have been a little spicier, but still tasted great. The Queso Blanco was a great start to our meal, and the mariachi band that serenaded us was fantastic!

Excellent location, average food.

Came during the Christmas lights and got a very good spot to watch the fun. Food is very average and drinks to match.

Good but not great

By Kevin E |

Nice atmosphere, good service. Right on the Riverwalk but the food was not as fresh as expected. Tortillas were a little colder and harder than what we like. Might have been because we were were early for dinner. Margarita was a little watered down. We were happier with Acenar.

Great Guacamole!!

By AtotheNtotheG |

Our waiter Rolando was amazing. He made our amazing tableside guacamole. It was the best! The salsa was great, but SPICY!! We had the street tacos which were a bit smaller than other street tacos. And, they did not have the double corn shell. The margaritas are pre-made (frozen) with added flavor that you have to stir in. They were not good. It had a strange taste. I even traded it for a mango, and again, it was not good; I did not drink it.

Yummy Salsa!

By Kristin E |

We had a nice lunch and excellent salsa and queso. Our server was friendly and food came quickly. Enchiladas we're tasty as well.

Good Authentic Tex-Mex

By snoopy N Y |

It's our first time in San Antonio and see the Riverwalk.. and with so many food places to choose from.. we landed here by accident! First, you have to find parking somewhere and there are parking garages around that costed us $20 for a good 4 hours. Since weather was still cooperative.. we saw this outdoor tables with various picnic colored umbrellas along side of the river and after looking out the menu including kids.. we agreed to sat down. and when it comes to the food.. it was an authentic tex-mex cuisine! margartia was good, the quesadillas for kids was like an unexpected adult portion size.. and my kids finished them all! they served unlimited salsa (spicy good) and chips.. and of course, the guacomole on the side was superb to our entree of enchiladas the servers were friendly and courteous... and make no mistake about leftovers... you'll have unexpected guests... flying to your table grabbing whatever they can from chips, tortilla... not sure about the margarita :) but definitely an option you can have when coming here for dining... and i'll admit there are others too to try.

Bebidas No Buenas

By Texas_Pablo |

Food was average but seemed overpriced. Kids' sodas and lemonade were extremely watered down. Waiting area smelled strongly of cleaning fluids and we had to take refuge outdoors, to keep from getting sick. Will try someplace different next time.

over priced and slow

By Chris C |

We wanted to get some good food on the River walk, but this was NOT it. The waiter was very attentive, but the food was average at best, our food was cold when it got to our table, and it was overpriced for certain. We ordered fajitas (chicken), margaritas, queso, and two kid's plates (quesadillas and enchilada). The kid's quesadilla was the best thing on the table by far. The queso was so thick that you could barely put a chip in it, and the margaritas weren't good at all.

Drinks and lunch

By Linette Y |

Fabulous beer and wine list. Friendly staff. Our server was very sweet. We could tell she was over "sat" and terribly busy, but she handled the crowd like a pro! She never missed a beat. Excellent food, SO much flavor! We will put this on our list for future trips for sure.

Good service

By Traveler |

I was here for family dinner. Mi chicken quesadilla was fully of cheese but a couple of pieces of chicken, the food is just ok, big portions, the service when we arrive were rude, but our server Pamela was really nice and helpful, the bar area was really dirty and had really bad smell, the bathroom was awful dirty. I don't recommend it.

Good View

By OrangeCountyJay |

Sat next to the river. Not the best Mexican but it was better than Casa Rio. I had fajitas and the meat was well seasoned and cooked. The service was slow and absent minded. We constantly had to remind the server for water, our appetizer (the chicharones was good and cheap) and our bill. They seemed under staffed and needed some training. Overall, if you aren't in a hurry and want a nice spot to just chill next to the River, this will do.

Tasty food, OK place

By Bunny59 |

Mexican restaurant on the Riverwalk. Food was tasty with generous portions. Servers friendly. Margaritas expensive. Tables & chairs were plain metal with no decor. Washroom was disgusting--filth & cobwebs!

Great Service During Final Four

By Cindy S |

We had a late dinner and this place was hopping! The service was amazing and the food was hot and delicious. The margaritas were Texas BIG! Would visit again when back in the area.

WOW!! Great margaritas

By ronbA3653TY |

Very good service at a table overlooking the riverwalk. The margaritas were excellent and the food superb with very generous servings.

Large amount of food! Good cheese sauce!

By Marcia B |

Excellent service form our waitress in the beginning but then hard to find at the end. Food was good The chicken chimichanga was delicious and huge! As a recommendation by waitress, my sister had the burrito chillitas with white cheese sauce instead of verde sauce and loved it! We ate inside and the atmosphere was bland and boring, They had a tv that I could barely see due to the location of my seat.

Really enjoyed our lunch!

By kmkc14 |

My family really enjoyed Rio Rio. Their lunch special was street tacos and I had the carnitas which were very good. The cheese quesadilla with queso blanco that my daughter ordered was also delicious. My new favorite drink is a Paloma and while it wasn't on the menu our waitress was more than happy to have the bartender make me one and I was not disappointed!! Great service and great food!!

Dinner Cruise on the Riverwalk

By AlexisMaurice |

My team and I did a Dinner Cruise through Rio Rio on the Riverwalk during a F2F Conference in San Antonio, TX. We had 8pm reservations, but we didn't get on the boat until about 8:30pm. Apparently they had some type of delay. Management seemed very nonchalant about the inconvenience. We went inside for some drinks because the patio was full. The inside of the restaurant is small and many of us had to stand. The cruise itself was nice. The food was nice; especially the Queso Dip. the kept the margarita's flowing on the boat, and I kept drinking them. The tour guide seemed very knowledgeable. Overall - it was OK.

Disappointed

By Dwight H |

We ate here with our son and it was a disappointing experience. The food was mediocre, the service was the same. I would not recommend this establishment.

Gave most of it back

By Helen C |

If we could have fed the fish and ducks or the homeless people, we would have. Only one other couple seated outside (that should have been our hint) but we ordered anyway. It took forever. It was 11 a.m. on a Monday morning. Will not be back.

Dreadful!

By Clive L |

We went on Saturday afternoon. There were waits at every other place we tried to go for lunch, but not here - and that should have been the clue! Service was decently friendly and attentive, but the food could hardly have been worse. I had the chimichanga which was a tough fried exterior containing a bland filling that might have been ground beef based, or perhaps dog food. The teenager had shrimp tacos that were "gross". It's pretty hard to mess up shrimp tacos, I would have thought, and he loves them so they were clearly not good. As far as I could tell the filling for these was mostly canned tomatoes. The wife had enchiladas de casa that were "meh" (so I guess the best of the three?) And it's not like the prices were reflective of the quality. They are quite proud of their food! I understand that we were on the Riverwalk, and I don't expect gourmet there, but wow, don't go to Rio Rio.

The Best Service Ever

By 24hippie |

The waiter was so nice and made sure that I had everything I needed without me ever having to request anything. An the scenery was breathe taking....so romantic and made you want to dance....make sure you don't lose out on that like I did .....An the Food made you eat more and buy more making it hard to walk to your hotel....the only thing I advise is to be careful of locals if your single because it's a lot beggars and takers that come up to you as soon as you walk out of the river walk area....

Good atmosphere - overpriced menu

By Alexis W |

You essentially are paying for a seat. The chips and salsa have a "unique" flavor and the food is average.

GREAT TEX-MEx on the River Walk

By Barbara R |

Great place to have dinner along the River Walk. You can watch the ducks in the river while you eat. Food is generous and very tasty. Good value. Good service. We actually ate here twice.

Slow Service and Uninspiring Food on a Tuesday Night

By thatchangthang |

I get it that the River Walk at night around 7:00 p.m. is busy and that probably anywhere on the river front I am going to expect: 1-inflated pricing and 2-crowds, but Rio Rio on a Tuesday night was a miss for me. My business associate and I went for dinner and was seated upstairs overlooking the river, so at least we wouldn't have to deal with the constant stream of people walking by and it made for a nice setting. There were mariachi downstairs singing to folks trying to have a meal, which I thought was hysterical and again, added to the ambience, but the slowness in getting the hostess to show us to a seat should have been a harbinger of what was to come. The menu offerings were not inspiring. Typical tex-mex stuff. They don't have free chips and salsa, which is their prerogative. They are riverfront and can get away with this. The problem is if the quality of the food lived up to the pricing, I'd be down with it. Not that the menu's expensive, but it probably is more expensive then other similar eateries further inland. I had the "fresh" guacamole. But it wasn't prepared table-side, so the freshness is debatable. It didn't really taste like anything, besides salt. I also ordered the battered fish tacos, upon recommendation of the waiter. These came to me extra well done. Everyone knows that fish should be fried within an inch of its life, which explains the popularity of sushi. The waiter kept apologizing the two or three times he actually showed up to the table, saying that it was busy. Really? The riverwalk at dinner is a busy time? I would say to anyone considering this place to just keep on walkin' down the river walk. There MUST be a better Mexican place somewhere else.

That's Some Good Stuff!

By Susan W |

On vacation for the holidays this place had us coming back for more. Great margarita's, chips and salsa were tasty, lunch was super. Blankets on our chair heaters right on the Riverwalk. It was nice. Stop I think you will be pleased.

Good dinner on the river

By J&JTravel |

This is my favorite mexican place on the river walk. The food is fresh, good, and large portions. It's a little more expensive than I'd like to pay, but every restaurant on the river is. We had great service and great atmosphere.

Good Mexican food with a view of the River walk

By Joel M |

Really like this place. Good assortment of Mexican dishes. Enchilada and taco plates are the norm, but all the food is tasty. Good service. My personal favorite is Chili Colorado, but the other dishes are very good, too. Also, a place to just people watch.

Too Expensive / No better

By srtraveler_11 |

We had a couples Saturday evening drink and dinner here . The fajita plate was $20 with a scant amount of beans & rice . We ordered some bean &cheese nachos expecting the traditional bean & cheese nachos but instead got a pile of chips covered with tiny black beans, corn , and blanco queso . Not what we expected or desired . We had a strawberry/ blueberry margarita and a Bloody Mary for just under $12 . The drinks were awesome . Overall the food was just ok and the menu was very pricey, more so than similar restraunts; and didn't have the deluxe variety plate we can usually find for $10-$11 at most other places . Service was quick in spite of a very busy night . It is located along the river walk as are many other restraunts .

Don’t forget your coupons!

By Mike |

We visited here as we had just come off the hop on hop off boat with a coupon (attached to our map) we gave us a great offer on churros. Churros were yum. We stayed a bit longer for some drinks and to soak up the great riverfront atmosphere.

Just OK

By houstontravelingfool |

Three of us went for dinner. Nice to sit at a table right next to the river. Great service - thank you Alex - but the food, we all agreed, was just so-so. Too many other options for next time.

Go State!!

By 104lff |

Rio Rio was a very fun place to eat and visit with fans. Rio Rio was home base for the Oklahoma State University Alumni and fans for the Alamo Bowl game. It is right on the river so you see the ducks and all the boats going by. The food was excellent and they have a wide variety of drinks. Staff was super!!! They were even wearing orange shirts.

Pleasantly surprised

By Mamasquirrels |

After reading several bad reviews I decided on a different restaurant for dinner, but when we arrived the atmosphere there wasn't what we were looking for so we just started walking. We came up to this place and decided to try it despite the bad reviews. We were greeted promptly and seated right away. Our waiter came quickly and gout our drinks. He kept our glasses full all evening. I was a little annoyed that chips and salsa weren't free, like we are used to, but we order them anyway. The chips were good, but nothing special. I ordered a carnitas burrito. It was excellent! It had a slight cinnamon flavor and it was so good! My husband had chicken enchiladas and they were also excellent. My favorite part of the meal was the coffee with horchata!! It was so good! All in all we had great service and the food was very good.

Great service! Good food.

By JNC79 |

Fantastic mango margarita! It was recommended with the chili rim and it was delicious! I had the street tacos - el pastor and carnitas. Delicious! Fun view of the river walk. I recommend sitting upstairs on the outside patio. Wonderful view away from the foot traffic. Fantastic service. Nice evening!

Great service nice food excellent drinks

By Juan E |

We went on company business around 35 people for dinner and we have a blast, the staff was super attentive and the service was great the food was good. Excellent please for a couple of drinks and nice Mexican food

Dinner and drinks

By Lisa K |

Place was slow and unorganized. Skinny margarita was $28 and not very good. Never actually ate because they told us to wait inside at the bar and they would come and get us for an outside seating spot. 45 minutes, one $28 margarita, and a $7.50 16 0z. beer later we went out to check and they forgot our reservation. Guy behind was told the same thing. Poor guy is probably still there waiting. Republic of Texas next door is much better.

Great Tex- mex

By Bri1313 |

My daughter and I ate there just before departing San Antonio. The food was really good, reasonably priced, with large portions. Wait staff very friendly. We are on the upstairs terrace and had an excellent view.

good food

By Christine F |

Stopped in with friends, our waiter (Chris) was helpful. I had the shrimp tacos (yummy). Pitcher of Margherita's also good. All my friends enjoyed their meals. We originally were sitting on the riverwalk, but the fans did not work outside (it was already hot). We moved upstairs and all was good.

Good, not great, but good

By Marquise T |

First off, the service at Rio Rio was great. Micheal made our experience outstanding, from bringing water to rinse off dropped pacifiers and making sure we got our discount. Now the food was okay, nothing to write home about. I do recommend the nachos, but can’t say too much about the rest of the menu. Oh great margaritas!!

Tables Overlooking Riverwalk

By Joyce J |

Ask for a table outside overlooking Riverwalk. You can watch the boats glide by with underwater lights of different colors. Also carriages lite up moving across the bridge. TexMex food was very good with generous portions. Dessert churros were free with coupon from tourist map.

Very Good Margaritas

By Corydon P |

We came here to have some Margaritas and they were very good. There were a few to choose from other than the typical house Margarita. They were all good. The salsa served with the chips was a little spicy, but had a good flavor (maybe spicy so you'll order more drinks?!? - we didn't mind). I would not recommend ordering Margaritas by the pitcher as they were not the same quality as the individual drinks - very disappointed by that. Didn't try any food but again Margaritas very good.

Good food and service, but not the best place to take kids--kids menu for 6 and uner only

By mom2three70 |

If you have kids, you know that most of the time kids menus are for kids up to 12 or 13. Here the menu says it is only for 6 years and under, which means you have to pay $18 for fajitas or $16 for flautas for your kids--and then they only eat a very small portion--a kid's size portion. The food was pretty good, especially for the river walk, the margaritas were good, and the service was very good, but not a great place to go with kids--by comparison, we went to an Italian restaurant the next night (Paesanos) and they immediately asked if we wanted kids portions for our 12/13 year olds. Even though the Italian restaurant was more expensive and a fancier, more high-end restaurant, we ended up paying a LOT less because we didn't have to pay $20 a plate for kids--not to mention they charge for chips & salsa. We live in Dallas and I've never been charged for chips and salsa in my life, so that was weird too. I would go back with adults only. We had 4 kids with us, so bad move.

Great dinner but...

By JDL12424 |

We met friends on the Riverwalk. Chose Rio Rio because they had an open table on the water. Our dinner was great, service great as well, prices reasonable considering the location. I try not to get too nervous about COVID precautions. The restaurant had the requisite signage concerning mask use. Customers were compliant as was the staff. However the roving Mariachi band was not. Oddly the one without a mask being the gentleman singing over the tables. That, combined with the volume of their performances, detracted from the enjoyment of the evening. Perhaps the band is independent of the restaurant but they did seem to concentrate their performances in this area and should be subject to the restaurant’s guidelines.

Kind of a let down

By cheekytiki |

It was our first trip to San Antonio and I was excited to try Tex Mex. Although we were seated immediately and the restaurant did not appear to be that crowded, early dinner on a weeknight, service was very very slow. Drink orders took forever. They brought out one serving of chips for 6 people. My husband received the incorrect food order, which they did fix right away. My enchiladas were ok, nothing special. I guess I was just expecting something more.

Tasty meals

By conniegum |

We stopped in here on a very rainy Saturday afternoon. Tropical Storm Patricia had been dumping rain over the city and the Riverwalk was void of most pedestrians. We walked in and had the entire upstairs dining area to ourselves, even though most customers were downstairs near the water. (The water stunk from all the new rain dumped into it) It was also very cold up there with the AC running on high. That meant we got top notch service and the food came out fast. The chips were fresh and warm and bottomless. My chicken burrito was excellent; well-spiced and tender. The other two in the party also liked their meal. I really liked the sauce on this burrito. It was a very affordable meal for three adults. None of us drank alcohol. This place is huge. There's plenty of upstairs, downstairs and outside seating. TVs adorn the walls in all the rooms.

Rough start, but left fed & happy.

By ChristinePeregrina |

This seems to be the only Riverwalk restaurant serving breakfast after 11:00 am. We first tried the Riverwalk bar, but walked out because it was dark and a little smelly and the waitress looked unwell. Next, we tried the street-level cafe. The menu was a limited. Craving huevos rancheros, I had to settle for chiliquilles and a Bloody Mary. Our young waiter was charming and food service was fast. It wasn't amazing food, but it was served hot and fresh, and the warm tortillas were excellent.

Great Margaritas!

By Cat B |

Horrible service! Had to ask for the chips to go with the queso. She was angry we wouldn't accept the wrong drinks and refused to warm the queso that sat because we didn't get the chips. We literally had to go find her for the tab.

Food was not good

By Kelly S |

They upstairs had a funky smells to it. The margaritas were ok but the food was not good. There was not taste to it. Would not recommend.

Superb place for lunch - excellent food, drinks and view

By wellsdp |

We had lunch here when attending a meeting in San Antonio recently. You cant go wrong with the food here. Everything is very good. The drinks are also excellent. We enjoyed several appetizers along with our meal and everything was good. We had a nice table on the patio near the river so we could see the boats going by. Very nice and a typical San Antonio experience.

Worst meal we had in San Antonio

By jamietallman |

I didn't have high expectations but we stopped in anyways. Service was ok. We sat outside right on the riverwalk, which was the best part. Food was average to below average. We had fajitas and the steak was cut really thick which was unusual for fajitas. The fajita veggies were almost non existent. The salsa was very bland as if using old or canned tomatoes. The server brought us a hotter salsa which was only slightly better. The guac was so so. The fajitas came out with only two tortillas and we had to ask twice for more tortillas. Our margaritas were pretty good but overprice at $12-13. I would not recommend eating at this restaurant.

Good food with great service!

By P6870UQandrewl |

I would actually rate this restaurant a 3.5, so I went with 4 stars. The service was attentive and amazing! Mike was a go-getter and very on top of things. He made us feel welcomed, informed and important. The food was OK for me. The chicken nachos were a little bland and not exciting. No real creativity present. I understand that it was only an appetizer, but in a Tex-Mex city such as San Antonio, I would expect better. My shrimp tacos were much better, but much spicier than I was told to expect. My beer was ice cold and my wife's margarita was on point, and after a long day of walking, good drinks cannot be overlooked! Considering this restaurant's location, I expected better than I got, so that was disappointing. However, the service, drinks and atmosphere made it worth it! If you just want to hang out with some drinks and attentive service, I highly recommend. If you have high expectations for Tex-Mex cuisine, you might consider other options.

one of our favorites!

By sat6666 |

get the fajitas sampler for two and share it with four - if you have chips with it, and a couple of margaritas, it's plenty!

Never again

By Jennie M |

Food was bad! Drinks were GREAT! The food had no flavor was extremely bland rice was under cooked & they charged for chips & salsa. Other places we did not charge for chip& Salsa

great view - average food - average service

By A B |

We ate here on a Thursday evening around 8PM in late February. We've been to River Walk a couple of times over the years - we are not normally looking for fine dining. Had about a 25 minute wait for a table - but hostess / seater did get us a table closest to water as we had requested. Server was OK - nice and polite - but not very efficient. We noticed he could only seem to focus on one table at a time, and did not check his other tables on his way to or from the one he was focused on. We had to ask other servers for assistance. We also noticed our server got the drink order wrong twice for a table next to us. Other servers seemed more confident and more efficient. Food was OK - nothing special - just like "on the border". We could hear singer / guitar player in main bar area just above us - OK for live background music. Female rest room - was in very bad condition. Our server really pushed hard for us to get the "super large" margarita which we declined. We noticed he pushed the same super size at other tables. Maybe a contest or bonus for up selling to these? We noticed a couple of near by tables that only ordered the super size margarita and shared it between two people.... did not order any food.... occupied table for an hour... does not seem like a good business practice to have highly desired dining tables near water occupied by those who only sit and nurse a drink?

Busy Venue on the River

By Richard H |

Tried lunch here on the weekend at this busy sidewalk restaurant. Food prices were moderate, but drinks were over-priced and not very strong. Service was prompt and courteous. Atmosphere was pleasant on the river and enjoyable for people-watching.

Not anything special here

By mrjanto |

It's been 2 months since our visit, and I still think about how disappointing this place was. So of course, I must write a review. We were eating with friends who had children. We would have eaten somewhere else on the river, but we chose this for the free kid's meal. The tortilla soup was very good, but the chicken nachos were incredibly bland. Our friends asked the waiter what the requirements were to get the free kid's meal, and he assured them that they were ordering the right things. However, when the check came, he apologized and told them that his manager disagreed. That's really not an acceptable explanation. This place also doesn't provide free chips and salsa. Is that common on the River Walk or is it just this place? I've never heard of that. (If you go to Chuy's during happy hour, you get a free nacho bar). If the decision is up to me, I will not go back to this place.

Nice little spot on the river

By Tim M |

We were seated immediately and ordered cold drinks. Very hot day with slight breeze. Not crowded at 1:30pm on a Wednesday. I ordered a pork burrito and it was prepared wonderfully. People watching was fun.

Rio Rio Mexican Cantina DISGUSTING

By Blake G |

Horrible!!! Waited 20 mins for drinks, 45 for salsa , our food came out after an hour... Queso rubbery, my kids fajita meat was ice cold, my guacamole was brown ,refried beans tasted stale and old AWFUL!!! Don't know how this place is still open

Worst Mexican food ever. Expected better in San Antonio.

By Randal B |

Worst Fajitas I've ever had. Got better Mexican food in Tennessee. Bland with poor quality meat. Can't believe you can even get Mexican food this bad in San Antonio.

Taco Bell has more authentic Mexican food

By Connie A |

Ugh, we were all so sorry to have wasted our River Walk lunch on this place. First off, the chips were crispy and nice, though for the $2/serving I could have bought a bag of Tostitos, had the same flavor and come out way ahead. Then the salsa, decent flavor but it was watery and no kick. We asked for something spicier and they brought some mole chipotle yuck and called it salsa. It had absolutely no kick at all. We got a side of mexucan style corn, but it tasted like canned corn, nothing like the traditional mexican corn with queso fresco and salsa. The beans had to have been canned because there is no way to cook dried beans and make them taste and feel that ick.The beef crispy taco was ok, best item out of the 8 of our orders. The cheese enchilada was ok for flavor, but came just barely warm and was put on a room temp plate so it hardened up before my dad was 1/2 way through it. I am from Houston, I enjoy TexMex and my SO is Mexican, so maybe I'm spoiled on good Mexican food and have too high of expectations. I really figure you would have to be from really far north to enjoy this place. I don't think our group was the only one to be disatisfied with the food as I noticed lots of people leaving lots of food on their plates when they left the restaurant. San Antonio has lots of great Mexican restaurants, but this isn't one of them.

Worst Shrimp Tacos EVER!

By Diana P |

I am 72 years old and never write a review but this was so bad, I felt that others deserved to know! I am not a picky eater but I could not eat their shrimp tacos! They used the same seasoning on the shrimp and in the sauce. It literally was so bad it made me gag. I do not recommend this restaurant!!!

Not Bad, Not Great

By Hotlantajohn |

I have eaten at this restaurant several years ago and I remember really enjoying their refried beans so I stopped back to see if there were the same as I remembered. My waiter was a bit disorganized. He greeted me and then disappeared. A bit later he comes back and takes my order. I had been traveling all day and I was hoping for some chips. I asked him do I get chips or what? He returns with a large plate of chips and two types of salsa one of which was pineapple salsa - excellent. Ok, he's off the hook. The bar must have been busy because it took some time for the drink to arrive (Smoke On The River Margarita), tasty but over-priced. My entree was the chicken burrito. It was scantily stuffed. The beans were very good and the rice could have cooked a bit longer. Lots of choices on the Riverwalk. This one isn't bad, but clearly it isn't great.

Great nachos!

By Heather T |

We stopped here on our first night in San Antonio as we strolled the River Walk. My husband and I both got the nachos, which were excellent, if too much food. Our friends got enchiladas and were very happy with their food as well. We also were given a coupon from our hotel for free chips and guacamole, which was top notch. Our server was good and the food came out quickly. We tried to go back another night to try something different, but there was a 30-minute wait and we were on a bit of a time crunch to get to an event.

Is it bubble gum or is it steak????

By Cynthia1866 |

The food was horrible - we ordered the fajitas for 2 costing $50- it was a combo of fatty beef that was green tinted- fatty chicken dark meat and 3 shrimps …the tortillas were under cooked and tasted like eating raw flour ….waste of a lot of mone

Tasty food on the River Walk

By Mizzou_SLP |

This was the first place I ate at on the River Walk, and it didn't disappoint. The food tasted very fresh and authentic. I had the beef burrito while my husband ate one of the enchilada dishes. We neither one had any left-overs. I even ate most of the rice and beans, which I am rarely able to do at a Mexican place. We enjoyed eating outside, but away from the river. Our server was prompt and polite as well.

I like the food

By JonDkinn |

I enjoyed the breakfast here on two occasions in December. The service, however, was slow and on the first visit they brought the wrong meal. On the second visit I had to send the coffee back because it was tea. Other than that, it was ok

Nice Riverside Venue

By Redlakelady |

Many choices on the Riverwalk, but we liked the fact that you were right on top of the river and could easily see the tour boats and playful ducks. Food was average for Mexican flare and, as expected, a little pricey for lunch but I guess you pay for the ambience. Service was great and all the wait staff were very pleasant.

It's okay

By cdog612 |

Walking along the Riverwalk we decided to grab some lunch. I wasn't the one selecting but was going with the flow in choosing a place. Service was fast and seating was on the Riverwalk. Lots of drink specials and food choices. I think there are better choices for Tex Mex so keep walking.

Excellent place for dinner!

By jpkeel |

a must-visit while in San Antonio. Try to sit upstairs outside for a good view of the Riverwalk. Great chimichanga. Best Churro I’ve ever had. Fantastic peach margarita. Aimee was our waitress, and she was the best! She was really friendly, good suggestions, and just all-around wonderful (hopefully when I’m back I can be in her section again). Highly recommend.

Good food - great location

By TravelerRob64 |

Actually went here 4x during our 6 day stay. Lunch on visit #1 - we both had burritos and margaritas that were both amazing. Pope is a top notch waiter - food & drinks were fantastic. Sitting right on the river was also very enjoyable. Came back a 2nd time for churros & margaritas - the churros were OK - no complaints but didn't knock our socks off. 3rd visit was another margarita later in the evening - we got the 27 oz and the quality was not nearly as good as the smaller (barrel) style we had enjoyed earlier. Dinner on the last visit was also very good. They were packed (Saturday night)- we said we'd be happy to wait longer for a riverside table. Told 1 to 1.5 hrs. Texted me 15 minutes later that our table was ready! Enjoyed another great meal - was not rushed - able to really enjoy a relaxing dinner with a great view.

The Place is small yet quaint. The service is courteous and excellent delivery... The drinks are great... The food is awesome and fresh... guacamole was freshly made... Fajitas and Mahi Tacos were delicious. Overall... enjoyed the place and recommend this place

Yuk!

All sauces for food/chips have heat! If this is your "thing" go for it. I think the lack of a mild sauce in a no go for many and I will not be back. Food by itself is lackluster and flavorless. Margaritas are cheap, but lack any punch whatsoever.. My advice is there are many really good eateries, just leave this one alone.

Nice outdoor seating on Riverwalk

Stopped in for a happy hour with outdoor seating. Amazing Margarita's and very good service. Fresh salsa and chips included.

Disappointing

By Ruffus06 |

We have eaten at Rio Rio many times over the years and were very disappointed in this visit. The menu is lacking and the food very average. With so many great places to eat in San Antonio, it is a shame to have one just OK. In the past, we have enjoyed excellent food, but no more. Hopefully, we just hit a bad night and things will improve. We will probably not eat here again unless changes are made.

Finally got to eat here...too bad for me.

I'e been to the Riverwalk several times during the last 18 months for several meetings and conferences. Was told to try this place. Finally did- not impressed. Actually- the worst tasting enchilada and burrito ever. Really don't want to put the place down as has a great location and the staff was somewhat friendly- but the food was just so bland I could not believe it. I might give it another try down the road- but only after sampling many other options first.

Group Outing

By daniellevr0egh |

We had a corporate outing with employees from different cities in the US. They loved the San Antonio experience and TexMex cuisine. The staff was quick to adjust and respond to our large group of close to 60. They were polite, informative and kept up with drinks all night. The food was excellent, fresh and well seasoned. Everyone had a great experience and most loved the prickley pear margarita - a San Antonio favorite. We are thankful our event went smoothly without worry from the planner.

Overflow

Great location, wonderful view of the riverwalk, but that was it. The food was cold and it was not what i ordered. I ordered chicken flautas, i got 3 beef and one chicken, all cold. I should have waited for a table next door at boudro's. I think the only reason this place stays open is the view and it catches the overflow from other restaurants.

Lunch Stop....

While walking along the river walk, we had a taste for Mexican so we decided to stop here. Great Service,Lunch specials were tasty and filling. Nice tables along the waterfront. Overall an enjoyable experience.

Ordinary Burritos But Outstanding Ambience

By jrftrav16 |

The carnitas burrito plate and a beer were run of the mill ,but filling. The highlight was sitting at a table immediately adjoining the river as the tour boats puttered by. Even on a 40 degree F December afternoon the outdoor seating was worth a bit of a chill. The server cheerfully fired up the standing heaters and brought the lunch plate before I finished my beer. A worthwhile mid walk break.

Sooo slow...

We waited about 30 minutes to get a seat.. that wasnt too bad.. however once seated, our waitress brought us 1 bowl of chips and 2 small salsa bowls for 4 people... after we ordered it took at least 1 hour to get our food... we got there at 8 and left at 10:30!!! Food was pretty good.

Food was overpriced and guac was very bland

By Barron B |

I have no doubt this place is ok to get a drink and do some people watching, but there has to be better places for food on the Riverwalk. In fact the margarita I had (I think it was the green inguana?) was the only thing I would recommend. I did not like the taste of the chips, they tasted like they were baked, but I know they were fried. We ordered the guacamole and although it looked fresh it tasted incredibly bland. It needed salt and something to give it some flavor. I ordered the street taco for $17 and got three very small tacos. I think 5 of these tacos would have been fair for $17, but getting only three I felt kind of ripped off. My wife had the lunch fajitas for $11 and she did get a very decent portion and she said she liked them so I guess that might be a safe bet, but if you can't do chips and guac correctly why go to a Mexican restaurant? I realize part of the price is being on the Riverwalk, but I just think there is better food on the Riverwalk.

Go for the margaritas

By Heather M |

Service was really slow. Margaritas were good (had a frozen prickly pear delicious, frozen mango good too). Chips and salsa were great - a garlic heavy green/white salsa with light crispy tortilla chips. Food was just meh. Had chilaquiles - not like chilaquiles I’ve had other places.

Cute place on the Riverwalk

We ate lunch at the Rio Rio on our last day in San Antonio. We sat outside right by the river on the Riverwalk. The ducks were a bit aggressive that day, but there was a hostess who would chase them back into the water with a spray bottle. The food was very good and the bloody Mary's were excellent! They offer daily specials and it was affordable and very tasty. I would eat here again.

Amazing

Just ok

I chose Rio Rio for breakfast when I spotted an open table along the river. The service was excellent. My eggs and bacon were just ok. My server offered me water to go which I thought was nice.

Have eaten there the last two times I've been to San Antonio and will eat there again. Food is great and very reasonable for the amount you get.

50th Anniversary Dinner

By Loren R |

My grandparents wanted to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary by going out to eat with the whole family on the River Walk. They wanted Mexican food and we decided to go to Rio Rio Cantina. I was so happy with our service! I called ahead of time to make reservations and told the manager what the occasion was. Not only did they decorate the table for us but brought us an appetizer on the house. Our server that night was a very polite young man who took his time with my grandparents on the menu and even spoke to my grandfather in Spanish. I had mentioned that we wanted mariachi's toward the end of the meal and our server remembered! He had them come up the stairs and had already told them that we were celebrating a special day. The food was delicious, the blueberry margarita was amazing, and our server truly made our night.

A fun place on the river

By lovestoroam78 |

Good food, good service, atmosphere is a little hectic since it is right on the river. would try and go for lunch rather than dinner so you can enjoy the rive atmosphere without a constant steam of people moving past your table.
