Came here on a recommendation knowing I was going to folder the soft shell crab special. Luckily they did not disappoint! The restaurant has a certain old school charm and feels like it has been there a long time. The staff were gracious and attentive. Prices for wine were reasonable and the menu had a great selection of classics along with some nice specials. The baked clams to start were very good. The melon and prosciutto was fine though I usually prefer it with cantaloupe rather then the honeydew they served it with. I also would have liked a little more prosciutto with it but it was a fair portion. The soft shell crabs were exactly what I had hoped they would be! The portion was just right and the sautéed style was delicious!! Everyone seemed to enjoy their meals plus they did a god job of making sure the kids were attended to quickly. We didn't opt for dessert though they had a solid espresso. The restaurant had a good noise level- we felt fine with the kids but it wasn't too loud. The service was very good and the prices were typical for NY. All in, a solid choice and certainly a place to which I would return.

After having sat though noisy bars in the evening it was great to have an intimate dinner where experienced staff looked after you. The Italian cuisine was great, I had the chicken Valdostana and my wife had the veal piccata which were both tender and filling meals. We had the lemon cake and cannoli not because we needed them but they both sounded appealing and we were not disappointed. Definitely a good find for dinner.

This was close to where I am staying so after a long flight decided to try it. I was not disappointed. It's a quaint authentic Italian restaurant with very helpful wait staff and delicious food. Try the Veal Marsala. Expensive by standards where I live, but hey, this is NYC!

Very unassuming entrance but inside is a lot of delicious food and wine bottles everywhere. The owner was there and explained everything and ensured we were happy.

Bread's amazing, Baby Arugola salad was good but the Jumbo Shrimp Francese was absolutely INCREDIBLE. My husband and I split the salad and entree bc we weren't that hungry - had late lunch. The staff was very polite and did not charge us a split fee. Very impressed with that. Restaurant is very intimate. Lovely

Wonderful restaurant, small and cozy. We sat upstairs which was nice and quiet. Great service and very good food.

Good to eat - huge understatement! My husband and myself decided to eat here after passing it on the way to our apartment then we read the reviews on trip advisor. So pleased we did. Really great at atmosphere in this cozy Italian restaurant with super attentive staff who obviously enjoy their job and our proud of where they work. We ordered 2 specials and were in food heaven. Not huge serves but that is perfect for us. I also shared (with reluctance) some of my desert with my husband and again not disappointed. The meal was made even more enjoyable accompanied by a bottle of Hess Cab Sav 2013 - nice drop! Great value for money which can be hard to find in the heart of New York.

Attentive service, there when you need them in the background when you donât. Great wine list, reasonably priced. Salad was fresh and the seafood wonderful. This place is on my to do list from now on when in NYC.

I had dinner with a friend at Sam's Place on a Friday night, without a reservation. We were seated promptly in a cosy corner table, and the waiter couldn't have been nice or more attentive. The restaurant is a cute, two-level small Italian place that's family-owned. Very good house wine and delicious food. The owner stopped by our table to say hello, and did the same at every diner's table. An authentic, delightful meal.

Top notch service, food and wine. Authentic and delicious. The veal is unbelievable, best part of my meal was the last bite, this was my second visit and it was just as good as the first. Thank you.

Sam's Place was an attractive Italian centric dining option for our family after attending a recent matinee of 'Beautiful' at The Stephen Sondheim theater. We wanted to find a convenient 'local' establishment near Grand Central Station in order for us to catch the train back to Connecticut without a lot of backtracking. Reservations are absolutely necessary as Sam's Place fills up after 6 PM with locals. We easily hoofed it from the theater to Sam's & back to the station. We experienced old school service at Sam's. The owner is the maĂźtre d & his son was 'one' of our servers. The vibe in the place could be described as the most formal starched linen version of laid back. Low ceilings, cozy tables & daily specials make it nostalgically comfortable & seductively palatable. I rated it very good but wish Trip Advisor had an 'Above Average/Good' rating as that is where I'd rate Sam's Place based on an 'averaging' of service, food, location & value.

Thereâs 8 of us packed into this lovely neighborhood place. The staff was warm, friendly & accommodating. Everyone loved everything- swordfish, veal an chicken piccata, perfect pasta. It was clean plate club all around. Plus one lovely shared lemon cake. I will be thinking about this one for a long while.

Cozy neighborhood place with great food. Staff very friendly and attentive. Will definitely go back.

Took a business client here. We both had half pasta orders as an appetizer (option not on the menu). I had sole and my guest had the chicken special. The food was delicious. We went around 5:30 on a Tuesday so the restaurant was not crowded and the service was good. With no drinks, bill was $80 before tip. It was a small restaurant but since it was early, it was not crowded and we enjoyed our meal.

wonderful wonderful Italian food.... very quaint.... very old fashion.... and the staff will treat you like kings and queens. Book this now. I had the sole Francais and it was wonderful.

We were just looking for places to eat near our hotel (Dylan Hotel NYC) and came across this one, decided to try it out based on the reviews. The restaurant itself is very small, with probably 10 tables max - when we went it wasn't rammed, but when there are loud people in the cramped room then you certainly know about it. The servers were friendly and helpful, food was reasonably priced (Aswell as tasting good). I'd definitely visit this place again, although I'd suggest getting a reservation, just a shame that the premises was so small and squashed. Would recommend though still.

I had high hopes for this place after reading the positive reviews but was hugely disappointed. The food portion was the smallest that I have ever ever ever eaten in any place. It is unbelievable that they think even a kid would be full after eating the food. Was it just my party or is that their norm? Only the person who got the angel hair primavera had enough food but the pasta was ovecooked and gross. Everybody else was still starving after he or she ate. My veal dish was literally 2 tiny thin slices of meat the size of not even a 6 year old's tiny hand. The taste was just ok, very salty. The only positive point about this place was the ambience. It was a cute little place and felt very comfy. Other than that....no other redeeming qualities. Very disappointing.

Popped in on the spur of the moment and were greeted by the very friendly owner who found us a table right away. I had the seafood pasta which was packed with seafood covered in a delicious sauce, my partners tortellini was also delicious. A superb NY restaurant and a credit to the staff.

I won a raffle pre COVID to dine at this restaurant. The owner had been generous to donate this to a fine charity. I had never had the pleasure to dine here. What a wonderful and delicious surprise. The food was absolutely delicious. The service friendly and efficient and the owner, Massimo, was as kind as could be. He stopped by the table several times just to make sure every was ok. Couldnât ask for a better unexpected dining experience!

Food was delicious, service above & beyond. Pasts dishes were all delicious as was the burrata appetizer. Ate upstairs in a very quiet room which we appreciated as we were 4 very chatty women.

We have been here several times over the years on visits to New York.On this visit with my son and his girlfriend we had to wait a few minutes for a table but after being seated had a quite excellent night.Food was lovely though the veal portion sizes are notably modest. My sonâs chicken parmigiana by contrast was quite generous.Another excellent night

This small restaurant with an unpretentious storefront seems to be family-owed. Service was efficient but some of the wait staff could use a bit more smiles. Bread came ambient and rather hard. Soda came with more ice than soda, and no refills allowed. Chicken parmagiana did not come with pasta, and only a few broccoli florets. I am used to chicken cutlets that are breaded to fried to be crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. This came in 2 thin cutlets that were fried but not crispy. OK experience but nothing special.

Max, the owner of the establishment will make you welcome the moment you enter the door. He will show you menu or you can tell him what you're in the mood for and he will make a recommendation for you or he'll offer to make it for you if not on the menu. Wonderful crew and you'll see many familiar faces if you become a regular there yourself. When we feel like going out for a family meal, we go to Sam's and they take care of everything, plus grappa!

This is our favorite restaurant when visiting NYC for a delicious meal at a great price relative to NYC. Owner Maximo often greets his guests and makes them feel at home. The food never disappoints, the service is wonderful and the wine list is excellent. We have been there several times and have recommended it to friends visiting. All have loved it and asked "how did you find this place?" A friend who lived in the city took us there the first time and we knew we'd be back. Because it's not a regular stop for tourists, reservations can be made around show times. I highly recommend Sam's Place.

Great experience. Great food. The owner was very gracious & catered to my 97 year old aunt. Great seafood special pasta dish, really good Caesar Salad. Very reasonable prices.

I rarely leave a review. This gem had to be acknowledged. The owner Massimo greets every single person at every table. He is genuinely kind and truly cares about your dining experience. The service is impeccable. The waiters are funny and also oh so kind. The atmosphere is on point. Cozy spot. Great vibe. The wine is the most generous pour in NYC. Now let's move on to the food... glorious food. I ordered my absolute fave dish to not only order out, but make at home as well. Im a pretty savvy home cook. The chicken picatta was delicious and as I have a dairy restriction, they made mine without butter. Dishes are made to order. My dear family member ordered the tortellini. She was in heaven with each bite. It had a Heavenly Alfredo sauce on the delicate lil tortellini. Now let me tell you the kicker... the entrees are @ $20 a plate. Sans the veal chop of course. You cannot get this level of food or this dining experience anywhere ive been in NYC. The scrumptious desserts are just $10. I love Italian food and have been to many delicious spots but not at this price point. Do yourself a favor and head on over to this fantastic hidden gem. Massimo has owned this place for 36 years with the same 5 waiters. That speaks volumes to me. They are a family by choice.

We had a wonderful meal at Sam's Place. The service was excellent and the staff extremely friendly. The pasta was fresh and the veal was delicious.

We went to Sam's Place last Saturday night in April. Restaurant was full, group upstairs, so we were seated downstairs on back wall amongst a large group of tables for two; side by each. My wife ordered "fresh clams with linguine" and I veal with mushrooms. Veal wasn't bad, but would have benefited from garlic and other seasonings. My wife's dish was horrible. No clams, fresh or otherwise and no sauce. Fresh clams in white wine sauce is made with garlic, oil, white wine and clams. It was linguine with pasta water or ??. Waiter never reappeared until he presented the check. When we compained, he grunted and walked off. After leaving and returning to our hotel, my wife threw up the horrible meal. Later we shared our experience with the Concierge at the The Court Hotel directly across Lexington Street. Unfortunately, my wife was queasy last two days.

Very tiny and run by the owner. Very delicious food and authentic Italian experience. Dont go to Little Italy... stay uptown.

Had dinner at Sam's Place tonight. Food and service was excellent. Warm cozy environment. Owner Max was on hand and greeted each patron warmly. Appeared to have many repeaters as he stopped at many tables to chat and seemed to know many. Great specials and for dessert cannoli's were delish!! Don't hesitate when in the area --a must!!

you might actually walk by Sam's without even noticing! But you'll be sorry you did. Massimo will greet you and make you feel like family right away! you can order from the menu or, they'll make something else for you! Great Italian food, drinks and desserts. Never go to New York without eating at Sam's Place.

Iâve eaten here previously, and the food has been better than it was tonight. Both of us had chicken dishes, and the chicken was tough In both dishes. On the other hand, both sauces were extremely tasty. The service here is amazingly quick and efficient. The ambience deserves maybe a C. They do a great job with what they have to work with. Iâll probably go back, but I wonât rush.

Just eaten a delicious meal. Lasagna was fresh made and the chicken was delicious. Definitely recommend this place The staff are so friendly.

We just dropped in to Sam's Place and are still talking about the amazing food. We had Seafood Marinara, Swordfish and Veal Forestiere. Each dish was superb, service and atmosphere very Italian - in a good way. Washed down the food with a bottle of Italian Pinot Gris...and the prices were very, very reasonable.

Cute restaurant a little noisy but the food is pretty good. Very American Italian which was great for me and the salad is fresh.

Thoroughly enjoyed eating at Sam's again this trip! Very friendly, welcoming staff - personal attention and good recommendations!

Terrific Italian restaurant in the Murray Hill District. Pasta is always fresh; 5-6 specials every day; quick and helpful service. Not inexpensive but worth every penny. Generally I order a pasta dish at lunch but recently I had their Branzino special and it was very satisfying.

Was in town with a group who all went out with spouses on our third night. I was craving Italian and found Sams close to the hotel. It was wonderful from the greeting at the door to the service of all the staff being attentive. The food was exactly what I wanted, Yummy!

A great neighborhood, traditional Italian restaurant. The food is delicious. The calamari in red sauce was delicious, perfectly cooked, seasoned and complex. I had the veal marsala with linguini which I also thought was perfect. The meat was tenderized, subtly coated and bursting with that delicious marsala sauce. The portions are large so definitely expect to take leftovers home. Their homemade, traditional cheesecake was the perfect way to finish the night. The staff were incredibly friendly and even encouraged to us to substitute different items on the menu to create a unique experience.

When I used to live in Murray Hill, one of my favorite neighborhood restaurants was Sam's Place. Now that I'm only an occasional visitor, I still prefer this laid back, old style dining room over the city's more trendy, upscale spots. Max is a great host, making both friends and strangers feel right at home. Attentive service and good, reliable fare in a warm and friendly setting makes this a great place to unwind with friends, colleagues or just on your own after a busy day.

My husband and I found this nondescript locale and it did not disappoint â intimate, cozy, atmosphere; the owner attentively greets guests at the door and ensures a positive experience, the staff was gracious and service was fast and the food was amazing. We canât wait to come back.

This is a first-rate Italian restaurant in Murray Hill, very close to all the hotels by Grand Central Station. It is a neighborhood place -- the kind of which there were scores of when I was growing up in New York City in the 1970s, but which are fewer and fewer by the year. I have never had a bad meal here. Just had a great linguine al frutte del mare, with a fresh salad tricolore, and tarfuto and espresso for dessert. Very reasonably priced for what you get. Close your eyes and you can be in Italy.

Medium quality and medium prices. The staff is rude and impolite, especially the person who is supposed to be the owner of the restaurant.

Arian wasan excellent waiter ,,,anytime you can go to a local place and the waiter has been there for 25 years...you know you have met the real deal Stracciatella soup...off the chain...teaming with egg and spinach Sumptuous home made fresh bread... Veal saltimbocca ..huge portion ..melt in your mouth REAL SCAMPI ..COOKED TO PERFECTION.. 4 oz free pour martinis...say no more we,lol try and get back here to enjoy a great meal in NYC

Samâs has spectacular Italian food along with wonderful personal wait service. Sam sat us at our table and checked on us periodically to make sure we were completely satisfied with everything. My chicken parmigiana was delicious along with a glass of house cab made for a perfect meal with perfect service and hospitality. This was my first dining experience at Samâs Place and I thoroughly enjoy my meal and I am already looking forward to my next meal there. I highly recommend this Italian Restaurant and youâll be glad that you gave it a try.

We had a wonderful evening here. The ambience is old school NY Italian, caring attentive service and excellent food. The complementary fresh bread basket was very good. We were offered a choice of, by NY standards, reasonably priced house wines. I enjoyed one of the daily specials of risotto and my husband had a chicken dish in red wine, both were very good. We lingered over a complementary Frangelico chatting to two lovely local NY ladies. Our best overall dining experience in the city.

Tried this place having seen the positive reviews on Trip Advisor. Great food and service and reasonably priced too compared to other restaurants we went to during the week. Definitely worth a visit.

Reasonable Italian option if you're in Murray Hill. It's not like you've found your way to Little Italy, but the food is usually reliable. The owner and/or manager will usually make their way around to converse with guests, which is a personal touch. The service is usually good except the last time when my wife ordered chicken piccata. The dish was presented to her but had no capers. When she asked the waiter about the error, he told her she had to request capers to get it on chicken piccata and that they were not usually a part of the dish. An unfortunate experience, and we haven't really been back since as NYC has so many more options. If you're staying nearby and don't want to get anything too fancy, this is a great little place to stop.

A great Italian that serves great food with a smile and at speed. Very welcoming and good choices. Definitely worth a visit!

The restaurant was too tiny with poor lighting. My friend who was 6.3" couldn't stand straight. His head rubbed on the ceiling. The tables are too small. Food is overpriced. We ordered alfredo pasta and it was served with no pieces of chicken or shrimp! Just pasta in heavy cream for $19 + tax. There's no window view so I'm not sure what makes this place special, except a few photographs of celebs that accidentally ate there. The wine menu was in the range of $45+ (not sure if it was a glass or bottle. Too scared to ask.) Anyway, the food and service was flavorful but I wasn't impressed. We couldn't take pictures because of the poor lighting.

When I go abroad I usually avoid Italian restaurants (the food is never like at home). This time, being invited for dinner, I had to make an exception...and it was a nice surprise. The food was very good and similar to a restaurant in Italy. I definitely suggest going . Having been invited I cannot comment about the price.

I have learnt to research restaurants in NYC before visiting because too often we end up being disappointed. We wanted Italian one night and did not want to spend a fortune and the reviews of Sam's Place were quite good. Plus it was not too far from our hotel in Midtown (the new Luma hotel which btw was great!). We liked the cozy atmosphere downstairs (about 10 tables but there are more upstairs) and it was quiet even though most of the tables were full (make a reservation). The menu is classic Italian. To start, we shared mussels marinara, calamari and Cesar salad. The mussels were huge! I usually prefer them smaller but the sauce was good. I don't eat calamari but my family said it was fine even though they would have preferred the fried variety. The Cesar salad was also fine though not your classic Cesar (no croutons and the dressing was more a vinaigrette than a creamy Cesar). For mains I really enjoyed my veal Marsala with some pasta on the side. My son liked his chicken Parm but my husband would have preferred his chicken arrabiata to be spicier. We had a nice bottle of Merlot but skipped dessert. Overall we enjoyed it. Typical classic Italian. A cozy, quiet, enjoyable dinner after a busy day in the city.

Restaurant was recommended by a friend and we almost missed it because it's doesn't look like much from the outside. Once inside, we were greeted and seated quickly. Food was very good. My wife and I would definitely go back again.

Just a block from Cuban Mission, hungry attendees after a military history talk at nearby soldiers marines seaman airmen's club, our mission if all 24 of us accepted It was to savor tantalizingly delicious Italian Food and we did. I elected to treat my hunger with linguini pasta prima Vera. Never better especially with sprinkled cheese. To avoid funding more than one moderate price dish, I partook of several pieces of fresh bread dabbed in olive oil to prepare for my entree. Almost like magic servers brought out our food to the 3 tables in a steady stream like a dance. I eyeballed the other dishes for my return visit as my campaign to indulge in winning dining. My bill with tax and tip came to $25 with one party paying it all with his credit card racking up some valued points.

Small, cozy restaurant. Nice, home cooked meals and good service. This is really a relaxing place in vibrating NY.

I have been to Sam's countless times (mostly for lunch with friends). The pasta is consistently excellent. My friend ordered a fish special and was as pleased as I was with my risotto with porcini mushrooms. I will be back many times!

2nd time here. First was in 2013, on a recommendation from our concierge. Small, quaint, authentic. The waitstaff feels like family by the time you leave and the food is fabulous!

Smas alkowed for a quiet business meeting that had a friendly atmosphere. We had fabulous daily special fo spinach linguine with shrimp and vodka sauce. A tantalizing taste that made you want more. But the portion was perfect for lunch. Loved this secret NY locale.

Had an amazing risotto. Place was very authentic Italian. Person that was with me had chicken picatta that was amazing too. Totally recommend going here.

Intimate dining area upstairs or down. Bread w meal outstanding. Excellent service. Tortellini was cooked perfectly. Cream sauce rich and smooth.

After being away from NY because of the pandemic, it had been something like 16-18 months since my last visit to Sam's Place. Today I introduced two friends to it --- and was relieved that it still is a delightful grotto serving excellent Italian food. I will continue to return!

Great Italian food in a very cozy location. The restaurant seems to cater to locals and out of towners alike as well and couples and small groups.

Deep in the Murray Hill neighborhood is a gem of an Italian restaurant: Sam's Place. The dining area is not large and we found the sitting to be close, intimate, yet somehow better than most places we eat. It's that local vibe! You will usually find Sam at the door greeting guests and dropping a funny line or two. We have found the menu selections to have good variety, and the portions perfect. As for the food, magnifico! We have yet to be disappointed. Ask for Henrique, he treated us right on our last few visits. "Little Italy" might have its place, but when it comes to local, try Sam's. Oh, and don't forget the cannoli!

We tried this little place because it was close to our hotel. Weâre glad we did! After ordering wine, the waiter brought a really big chunk of bread with a wonderful chewy crust. We ordered veal scallopini, a special, and chicken valdostana. Both were excellent! The chocolate mousse cake and cappuccino proved a great way to end the meal. Iâd recommend this little gem to anyone looking for really good Italian cuisine.

I confess that I would never expect an Italian restaurant to bear this moniker. But names are obviously deceptive. So is the exterior on 39th St. which looks somewhat foreboding. But once you get inside, this is a cozy little Italian place with great food, reasonable prices and probably one of the best in Murray Hill. My two little boys and I first showed up (with a reservation) on a really cold Saturday night and did not receive what I would call an effusive greeting, but were promptly seated. There are perhaps 15 tables downstairs and possibly some upstairs. The maitre/headwaiter paced the room nervously that evening as apparently the cold weather scared off a lot of reserved tables including a large one set for ten. That was about the only negative experience here. The service was friendly and competent. The bread is excellent as was the salad appetizer. They make a perfect martini. My younger son asks only for bread and spaghetti with olive oil and cheese and he was a happy camper. My other son had a tortellini stuffed with cheese and loved it. I had the veal special topped with cheese and all kinds of other things and thought it was great. Vanilla ice-cream, cannoli, espresso and Sambucca were right on. Everything was so good that we returned two nights later for another round of similar fare, but differing tortellini and veal and a more relaxed maitre/head waiter. I conclude without reservation that Sam's is the best Italian fare atmosphere and value I have had in NYC in the forty years I have been dining there and will return for sure when I get back. Happy Trails.

We are here on a whim as it was close to our hotel and looked good-we were right!!! From the moment we walked in the door we were greeted warmly and well cared for. The food was delicious, good old fashioned Italian. It's not huge and I wouldn't take small children here if they like to run around. It could be romantic but would also make a good place to meet for a business dinner. Can't wait to go again!

This place a gem! it's right by my office so I go there a lot. The food is so amazing! everytime you go you leave there filling so full! The fish dishes, and pasta dishes was so good! Can't wait to go there again!

Great food, reasonably priced, and friendly staff. Very cozy ambiance. Go-to spot for many locals according to people we met who live in the area. My pasta dish was fantastic, as was my entree. Definitely will go back next time I'm in NYC.

Sams place is quite the find. The food tastes just like Sunday dinner in my Italian grandmother's kitchen if I had an Italian grandmother. Besides the food being fabulous, the owner is a Roman treasure and it was a treat just being able to talk to him throughout the meal. Cancel all standing dinner plans and go to Sam's Place. I'm drooling thinking of my last meal there.

This restaurant was right across the street from our hotel. My 7 yr old was craving pasta so we thought we would give it a try! Iâm so glad we did!! It was amazing! The service and food was top notch

My husband and I had dinner here on Saturday, Sept. 28th. The owner was not in. We were hoping to see him again. We recognized our server who told us he was working there 32 years! We were given a table in the corner which was the table we first sat at 6 or 7 years ago on our first visit. Dinner was SUPERB! They give complimentary bread and olive oil and a plate of cheese, olives and supersod (I think) or maybe Prosciutto. Either way, it's delicious. We ordered a bottle of pinot noir, we split the baked clams and we had the Veal Parmigiana and Veal Marsala. Can't say enough how delicious and authentic this food is. Our server was so pleasant and helpful. Thanks for a great night! We will be back when we return to NYC next year. Sams Place has our heart. We love it here. Highly recommend! Ellen Corbett

Owner/host was very accommodating - no reservation on a Saturday night during the holiday season in NYC. Service was exceptional. Professional waitstaff that was very attentive, but not too much so. Food was delicious - shrimp scampi and veal parmigiana both perfect. Crusty bread the best !!! Would go back the next time we visit NYC, wherever we end up staying.

Better to sit upstairs - downstairs is a bit tight and with a low ceiling. Food was really good: - steamed clams were delicious - Sole francese in white wine sauce was great! - whole grilled branzino was a bit dried, but also not bad. - we had a bottle of Italian Pinot Grigio less than for $50. Recommended for casual dining and Italian "home kitchen" vibe.

Friendly restaurant with good menu. The Martini's are great as is the service.Seafood is a must with great pasta.

I found myself staying at the Pod 39 across the street-looked up on Travel Advisors. Great reviews. I was disappointed. Great ambience, staff very friendly. Salad was ruined as waiter poured balsamic vinegar on salad before I could stop him, rather than putting in a bowl so I could mix myself. Veal Piccata was made up of three tiny pieces of tough, tasteless veal, warmish. The sauce was very good but wasted on the meat. The bread was out of this world. Coming from the SF bay area, I have high standards, the French bread was some of the best I have had. The Tiramisu was the best I have ever had-anywhere. I thought the wine list very limited indeed. After a week in NYC I must be fair and say I found this to be an issue in every restaurant I ate. It was 6.00pm on a Wednesday and the tables were nearly all taken, with both locals and tourists. I will try again and hope this was a one-off. Without the great bread, I would have needed to have another dinner.

This place is across the street from my hotel and I wondered, but didn't go until I read the positive reviews here. Lovely small place with excellent service and very good food. I will try and go again!

The irony is that we were here with an Italian, and the "sole in white wine" that we had, he said that dish never existed in Italian cuisine... Prosciutto with melon was ok. Mussels as well. No typically Italian dish - meatballs. And one more strange thing: they don't serve ANY potatoes - they don't have it đłđłđł The good thing is that the dessert choices are plenty - for sweets addicts :)

I've been to Sam's Place many times over the years. Whenever I'm in New York (averages once a year), I stay with friends a block away and we frequently dine at Sam's. The ambience is delightful New York. The food is delicious; I've never had a meal that was less than scrumptious. The pasta nera and the swordfish with capers -- delish. The owner and staff are incredibly accomodating. For example, if you have a hankering for something not on the menu, they will try to provide it. Once I asked for a chicken puttanesca and got it. The prices are reasonable for Midtown. You can't go wrong.

Nothing to criticise whatsoever! Lovely ambience, friendly and efficient service. Every dish was superb. Mid-range price but that was good value for money for great dishes. Quite small and close tables, but that adds to the atmosphere.

We've had several great meals at Sam's over the years while visiting NYC, and this time when we went in to see a show and the tree in Rockefeller Center, we thought we would not try it again because it is so hard in life to repeat a previous wonderful experience. Kinda like going back to see your childhood home and having a letdown when you realize it wasn't as big or pretty as you remember it. Well, Sam's Place doesn't fall into that category. Again, the warm atmosphere, attentive staff, and great food was at least as good, if not better than our prior visits! Oh, and by the way, we went on a Friday, and when I looked it up on Google maps on my phone it said it was closed Fridays - luckily not! The only day they are closed is Sunday.

My husband and I visited Sam's Place on Saturday, February 17, 2018. It is our favorite spot in NYC. This is probably our 4th or 5th time there. It is consistently perfect! Their bread is fantastic with their olive oil...we shared a cesear salad and I had the Veal Marsala and my husband had the Veal Parmesan. Our meals were incredible. It felt so good to be back in this warm, inviting restaurant. We will be going back to NYC in September and will definitely return to Sam's Place. Thank you for such a wonderful night. Ellen Corbett

A true gem! Cozy, welcoming neighborhood Italian! Great service. Amazing food! It was all delicious! The veal was spectacular! Everything is so fresh and the flavors just explode in everything! Mangia! Beware the limoncello!

My first time in New York City and we find this place...Never in my life have I ever enjoyed a meal more than this. I got the Linguine & Clams & my Boss got the Chicken Parm. Best service ever with the boss coming to the table. The waiter was amazing. The food?? out of this world. GO THERE.

After an amazing day in NYC, I figured dinner would be a formality. We'll it wasn't. We heard about Sam Place. We went there hoping to get a table with no reservation. Fortunately, we got a table. What a blessing!! Sam sat us. Selected our dinners for us. It was amazing. Everything was amazing!! It was so much more than a meal. It was an event that we will remember forever!!

My daughter and I popped in for dinner. The restaurant is very nice, The staff very very friendly made feel so welcome. Food was delicious, I would definitely recommend!!

We eat here very frequently because of the intimate setting in the restaurant. If you need a place to go that is near Grand Central Station area it is an excellent choice. They are known for their Lasagna and Pastas but you cannot leave there without sampling their Branzino. The fish is prepared with lemon and it is seasoned. I have had it several times.Another good dish is their veal chop definitely grilled and well seasoned.

Very good food once my wife's meal was corrected. Lots of locals and fast service. The owner came around to make sure all was well. Recommended!

We had an excellent dinner at Sam's place which was close to our hotel. So beautiful and cosy inside and lovely service. I had a bowl of mussels with a beautiful red wine. It was an enjoyable evening with friends and I definitely recommend it. Best to book ahead as it gets very busy!

Excellent service. Unique cuisine. Tasted a delicious pasta with seafood. gourmet. Great wine list. Excellent location in the heart of Manhattan.

Great little spot that is quiet, warm, and intimate. Italian food is very good-service is excellent. Incredible value for the area of nyc. We have eaten here twice when visiting nyc and love it. Seems to be mostly local patrons which tells you something.

What a wonderful welcome to New York after a long travel day; recommended by hotel concierge; short walk from Grand Central. We only saw the 7 tables on the entry floor (don't know if there was seating elsewhere) but it was cute & romantic. I didn't even read the menu -- the specials described by the waiter were enough to convince me -- and they were incredible. I loved the risotto with porcini mushrooms.

My husband and I visited Sam's Place on Saturday 9/24/16 (without a reservation). We were greeted with a smile and seated right away. The atmosphere is cozy and the owner has an impressive collection of wine which is on display. For dinner, we shared a clam appetizer (with a red sauce)...forget the name. It went great with their bread...which is amazing! For dinner I had the Red Snapper Special which was superb and my husband had Veal Parmigian which he loved as well. The service was wonderful and the food outstanding. The owner visits each table (but is not intrusive). So glad we found Sam's Place and hope to be back again next year. Thanks for a wonderful dinner! Ellen C.

Sam's Place is a cozy neighborhood spot. I had a delicious veal piccata......Service could be a little more attentive and warmed bread would be a plus. Nice wine selection and good menu.

Excellent selection of Italian food including fish, poultry, beef and pasta. Very reasonably priced wine selection for Manhattan. Meal is not rushed but if you are in a hurry, they will certainly accommodate you. Reservations are helpful especially with a large party. Did not try the desserts but looked appetizing. Easy to find, corner of Lexington and 39th Street.

I had dinner at Samâs Place this week. Great little Italian restaurant in midtown east. Friendly service and great Italian food.

In town for business, and checked this place out. The Chicken Parm and Tiramisu were very tasty and the portions were above average for NYC. Reminded me of an authentic Italian restaurant with an old world family feel.

After multiple visits in several years, I can confirm that this is still a fine dining place. We were warmly greeted and carefully seated at a good table. The service is thoughtful. The food is consistently first rate Italian. The wines by the glass are decent. And unbelievably, the prices in crazy NYC are a fair value. Highly recommended.

My wife and I were literally looking into restaurant windows along Lexington when a guy recommended Sam's Place. It's a no-nonsense diner, nothing fancy but food was very good and the service was superb. I can particularly recommend the cannoli. We owe a debt of gratitude the guy who recommended it to us so thanks if you happen to be reading this.

We loved it. Very small dining area. We arrived early with no reservations. We were seated, had cocktails and bread in minutes. Clam appetizer was delicious, fresh salads ,and our main course were Veal with artichokes, mushrooms in a light white wine. Excellent. Also a Risotto with Mushrooms was creamy and very tasty. I would highly recommend.

we eat here on a friday night before Xmas when everywhere was busy and they managed to get us a couple of seats despite being very busy. The food was good Italian fare and the service was attentive although they were very busy.

Little pocket restaurant in Murray Hill just south of Grand Central. Stopped in the night before Thanksgiving Day parade after trip in from CT. Great bread & wine, dessert. Food exactly what you'd expect from a trusted neighborhood Italian restaurant. Good and plenty. Owner a wonderful European transplant who wears an American flag on his lapel. Saw my flag scarf, told me how much he loved this country and served me free limoncello. Ended up floating away to happy land without helium. Shhh...don't tell anyone.

What a wonderful place! Really, this is a true New York Place. Mainly I see locals there which is the best recommendation. The staff is exceptional and make you feel very welcome. I have have very many wonderful meals there -the last was a cream scallop dish the was ethereal. It is an Italian food restaurant and the ingredients are so very fresh. It has a cozy vibe as you step down to enter..it is an interesting dining room-small but charming. I think yo will enjoy it.

My wife and I have been to NYC many times and stay in midtown Manhattan. We have several "go to" places that we enjoy. After a day of seeing the Rockettes and another show, we were going back to our room and she said we should grab dessert. I said I had heard good things about Sam's Place, so we stopped in. It is a very small restaurant and was fairly busy. We thought about reconsidering and going somewhere else, but we were greeted at the door, told the young man what we were going to do and he told us to let him check on a table. Moments later, another young man came and we told him we wanted to do dessert and he led us to a table for two. We order a cannoli and cheesecake. The dessert came, we ate and probably within 15-20 minutes, were ready to leave. The owner perhaps--I assume Sam--or maybe a manager came to our table and slammed our check down. "Don't come back and just order dessert," he said. We walked to the counter and my wife was very apologetic and said we had told both employees we had spoken to what our intentions were. He held up his hand and said, "Let me speak." He pointed to a picture on the wall and told us he had been in this location for 34 years--not sure what this had to do with anything. My wife again said, "We are sorry, but we did say we only wanted dessert. We would have gladly gone somewhere else." He said again, "No, you let me talk. I had to turn away customers." At which point I stepped up and said, "No, you have said quite enough. How many customers have you turned away in the 15 minutes we have been here?" "Many," he replied. At this point my BS senses were tingling since there were empty tables including another table for two one table over from where we were seated. I also wondered why we would not be considered customers...we are experienced travelers and have been to many cities in many countries and can honest say we have never been treated as rudely as this. On a positive note, I was able--as my wife was pulling me by the arm out of the door--that I could assure him we would never come in to order just desserts again...as well as appetizers, drinks, entrees or anything else for that matter. By the way, the cannoli was very good, but the cheesecake sucked.

There were four of us, looking for somewhere close to Grand Central Station for a mini-family celebration, and we found Sam's Place online. What a wonderful experience. The restaurant is small, the menu modest, but the food and service were superb. Among the four we had two seafood dishes, one veal and one vegetarian. Each was extremely well prepared. There's something about good food, simply & expertly prepared with fresh ingredients, that really appeals to me. Also a plus: did not feel rushed. I give this the highest rating not because it's necessarily the finest restaurant in New York City, but because at every level it was uniformly excellent. Highly recommended. Looking forward to going back.

Nice place, limited menu expensive wine for its quality or lack of it. Would I go back answer is no, very difficult to please all members of family.

I eat at Sam's frequently but almost always for lunch where I favor one of their fresh pasta options. Last week I met a friend there for dinner -- and had veal Marsala. it was very good even if not memorable. The service, as always, was quick and helpful and, as always, I was warmly greeted by the owner. Quieter at dinner than at lunch too.

We had a mouth watering risotto porchino that crowned a great meal with chicken breaded in cheese and an exquisite red from the Napa Valley. Service attentive and extremely friendly.

The owner is everything they say. He held me hand and cracked jokes and was generally charming and warm. I asked for a glass of chianti and it was in front of me before I blinked, and not a skimpy pour either. I had the linguine nero, squid ink pasta with mushrooms. It was absolutely delicious. My friend's linguini with clams was equally good. A perfect meal all around. I can't wait to go back.

The restaurant was recommended by the front desk staff at the hotel I was staying at, The Court, as one of the better Italian restaurants in the area. My friend and I were not disappointed. Small, friendly staff, and the food was very good. You don't feel rushed. Excellent coffee, too.

its been there 34years and the locals love it. small space with a quiet atmosphere. romantic and intimate.

Looking for something near hotel. Itâs located at E39 street. The restaurant is cosy comfortable Italian restaurant. The waiter give their recommendation of the day and kindly made adjustment. Have orders seafood linguine which portion is huge (for Asian) and seafood is fresh. Has scallop, mussels, calm and half lobster. đ

We'd seen good reviews for the place earlier in the day and decided to try it out that evening. We hadn't booked and had to wait as it was particularly busy. But I'm glad we did. This is a clearly a small family owned business that prides itself on good food and good service. I'd recommend it to anyone in the area, but perhaps call ahead

In NYC for business. Was walking around looking for a place for dinner, and happened upon Sam's Place, and a quick Google search showed very good reviews. If it might be classified as a Red Sauce Italian restaurant (there are plenty of non-red sauce dished on the menu), it has to be best in class. The food is fantastic, what I had - chicken parm with linguini, with chocolate mouse cake for dessert - as well as what I saw and smelled coming out if the kitchen. The service and staff were great as well, very friendly and welcoming. It is the type of place where locals are weekly diners, as many customers were known to the owners anf staff during my visit. Highest recommendation, will make it a point to be back next time I am in NYC.

Had a lovely meal at this small restaurant, to some it would seem a bit too small, but all the diners, seemed to be taking to each other, even though they had never met before, extremely friendly place, The meal was really lovely the swordfish par excellent as were he other two diners in our party. The nice touch was the owner making sure that everyone enjoyed their meal, he was obviously very proud of the food and service, as he should be

The service is friendly and efficient without being obsequious. The menu is small but the food is incredible! I had the special which was fettuccine with bolognese sauce. It's small and cosy and I get the impression that it is a 'local' restaurant, we shall certainly be going back.

Very much as described in terms of layout and atmosphere. We were looked after and although we hadn't booked, a nice table was found. It is a bit small for larger people, (three of us in the party over six foot!) Attentive but impersonal service. The food is over seasoned and not that well presented for the price and style. I had the squid ink linguine which looked more like a green pasta rather than the deep black pasta associated with squid ink. This is New York so it is over priced for what it is and as usual the wine is much too expensive. If you like a typical homey Italian atmosphere, large portions, plenty of bread and good service then that's what you will get.

I came here with my colleague one day during the week. It's a fairly small, traditional looking Italian restaurant. We were provided with some bread upon sitting down. We both ordered the special which was handmade spinach pasta with bacon and tomatoes in a cream sauce. It was so delicious! But very heavy. We ordered cannoli to go - they were huge! I would really recommend this place for nice pasta dishes.

One of the worst dinners I ever had. It was impossible to eat. I needed to remove the meat from the pasta to be able to eat part of that.

We ate at Sam's twice in four days. The service was charming and attentive. Loved the Caesar salad, well dressed, not drenched like many restaurants' offerings. Great range of Italian classics to choose from, pastas and secondi. Especially on our second visit, we were remembered and greeted like family.

We had 7 go out for dinner (family & friends). Restaurant was busy and our reservations got us in on time. Manager and servers were friendly, helpful and always available. Food was fresh and real good. Extensive menu of food and wine (not so much for beer or whiskey) with many great options including gluten free pasta. Fresh bread, appetizer's, etc. were all very good. Nice spot..

Live in the area & always wanted to try this place. Glad we did. Good food. Had dinner there for New Years Eve. Plan to go back again.

Loved this place. Authentic Italian food and wonderful staff. Great find not far from Grand Central Station. Must try the chicken parmigiana, still dreaming of it!

We came across this cosy little Italian restaurant to try and get away from the fried and chips with everything food that seems to be Americaâs staple diet. We had a friendly welcome even though we hadn't reserved a table and it was busy. We were shown upstairs to our table for four by a waiter who, realising we were English showed an interest in English football and supported Liverpool. There was a comprehensive menu to choose from, the food was tasty, well presented and reasonably priced, we enjoyed the meal and the ambience in this little family run restaurant so much we booked a table and returned the following evening.

I was here for dinner with friends, one of whom had been here many times before and recommended the place. Despite the unassuming entrance, the place is bigger than it looks. The staff are friendly and attentive and the food amazing. The bread alone will have me coming back.

While this small restaurant is very pleasant and the waiters very attentive, the food was a bit disappointing. I had a pasta with vegetable dish in a cream sauce that was bland and uninteresting. My companions had veal dishes which they also said were just so-so. The cannoli for desert was not nearly as good as in other restaurants (maybe I was spoiled by the best cannoli I just ate in Rome).

This was a great find close to our hotel. After a long day, we thought about going out but decided to order out and have a bottle of wine at the hotel. We had the chicken parmigiana, chicken arabiata with a Caesar salad for 2. It was ready in less than 10 minutes... $60 taxes in. Loved it. We got greater with a heart warming âGrazie per essere venuti.â It was a family affair with no less than 5 people welcoming us to their restaurant. We will be back on our next trip.

We travel to NY about once or twice a year and Sam's is always on our list. There are only about a dozen tables and the noise level is tolerable. There are some more tables upstairs for large parties and overflow. We were 5 and we tested the menu. We had clams - both baked and steamed. They were great. We had 2 veal dishes (parm and picatta), red snapper in lemon and capers and 2 fettuccine alfredo. The fettuccine was good but I make better. The veal and fish were outstanding. Clams were excellent but the Caesar Salad was average. We ended with the best cannoli I have ever had. Service was superb and pricing is average to a bit above.

As family we're staying just a block away at an Affina hotel, decided to go to Sam' Place after a long day sight seeing in NY. Didn't book but was early in the evening so no issue with getting a table. Small, quaint restaurant with two levels but sufficient space to not feel cramped. Menu is varied and offers the usual Italian delights plus a few specials so overall good choice. Food quality was high plus plentiful - service was excellent and very attentitive to our needs. It seemed a busy restaurant late evening so booking after 7.00pm is probably required. If you are in the area, a must try restaurant....

Let's start with a positive- service was OK.. Now then, quite and how this restaurant has averaged 4 stars I do not know. Calamari starter was so chewy it was inedible and sent back (both of us). Main course ravioli was in the same sauce as the starter, and the ravioli tasted as though it had been microwaved (scalding hot in the middle, tepid on the outside). Other main was obviously shop bought stuffed pasta (typically symmetrical) and taste the same. The staff discounted the food we sent back, however $30 for a bad experience means we won't go back. You may have a better experience but I doubt it. We went to Shake Shake and received better service and nicer food. And before people start moaning about the injustice of my reviews, just don't. I'm reasonable and this meal was not!

We happened upon this restaurant as it was near our accommodation (Affinia Shelburne) and had a great night. We were greeted at the door by the owner with enthusiasm and compliments (he told me I was beautiful which is lovely when you're 55 even if he says it to everyone). The decor was fairly basic but the food lovely and the atmosphere great. We sat upstairs which I think is better as downstairs looked a little cramped. Our waiter sounded like someone out of a Godfather movie which added to the fun ( he was very lovely). One of our party was coeliac and they did not blink an eye and provided gluten free choices for most of the menu. Thoroughly enjoyed our night here and recommend it if you are in the Murray Hill area.

Very few 5 star reviews. Cute, quintessential nyc Italian restaurant. Owner comes by to say hello and toast us. Baked clams like I grew up with. Chicken parm is huge and tasty and cuts with a fork. Lovely risotto. House made ricotta cheesecake and old fashioned cappuccino. Love it.

I have been going to Sam's for over 12 years now. I used to work a block away, and found it convenient to get together with co-workers. Since then, my office has moved around the city, but I continue my patronage. Now that I work from home, I still come in from Queens to enjoy a great meal, chat with Massimo about the old country and leave satisfied with time I spent there. I am back this Saturday to bring a friend again, she loved our last visit. Can't say enough about the place. I almost didn't write a review too many people will go and spoil the intimacy and vibe. Love, love it.

Great little Italian restaurant. Cost situation, but comfortable. Great food, we had their specials of the evening and they were worth it, a chicken dish and a salmon/pasta dish. Deserts were also awesome. Definite recommendation,

The best meal in NYC, this place looks very unassuming from the outside.....no big flashing signs, just fantastic food with great very knowledgeable, friendly staff. I'm from the UK so asked lots of questions about what was on the menu as I was not familiar with some of the terms and references. Staff took there time and walk my girlfriend and I through everything. I recommend the NY Prime Shell Steak, I've seen this for double the price else where. It was 'out of this world' great value for money. You must visit this place, it's where the locals go.!!!

menu is diverse, great wine list, excellent food and the owner always takes time to say hello and make sure you are fully satisfied--he is a true gentleman

This is a small establishment so it has a cozy atmosphere. We sat on the ground floor. I had the shrimp scampi and others in my party had the seafood special. All were good. The scampi came with asparagus and no pasta. It was nice and quiet so you could carry on a conversation easily. The service was also very good.

The staff more than exceeds your expectations and the food was even better. A must try easy to find off Lexington Ave

We went for a mini family reunion. Caesar salad was un- recognizable-- strange dressing, no anchovy taste, no croutons and a sprinkling of cheese. Barely a side order of vegetables came with the entree. I ordered the mussels which were huge, sandy and had bits of shell. I returned the dish and ordered the fish my husband was eating. He did not like it and I finished it and canceled my replacement since it seemed like I would be eating alone by the time it came. The waiter seemed to have an attitude and served us with a dour face as he called out the dishes waiting for us to claim them. The upstairs room we ate in was also a storage room for large boxes and we were told to throw our coats on a chair. We will not return.

Sam's is one of my favorite Midtown NYC restaurants. Went with a friend the other day for lunch and when we heard that one of the specials that day (they almost always offer five "specials" beyond the regular menu) was home-made ziti pasta with pesto each of us ordered it. Here's the headline -- I thought I had died and gone to heaven! I love pesto but there's pesto and then there's pesto -- this was outstanding and the pasta was fabulous.

I was taken to Sam's by my boss along with several business associates. Most of us had never been there before and the diminutive dining area had several in our part questioning the decision. That was completely unfounded however because the decor, though not new is well kept up, and the staff are very welcoming. The food was a mix of classic Italian dishes and some that are slightly less so. I had the squid ink pasta and it was amazing, the sea bass that another diner had looked amazing, and a usually picky eater he ate the whole thing. The prices are very reasonable for the quality and the wait staff are happy to make recommendations if you are at an impasse.

White table cloths, charming & friendly owner, fabulous food and attentive service. Where else in NYC could you find this and all at a very fair prices. The food is all familiar Italian, but better prepared than the priciest restaurants in Manhattan. The veal pizziola was soft and served deliciously hot. My dinner companion had chick scarpiello and said he'd be back to try the other offerings. When you enter, Massimowill greet you and treat you like ann old customer.

We visited here on our first evening in New York. The service was friendly enough, and food was fairly good although did seem very expensive for what we had. My only real complaint is that we felt very rushed - as soon as the last moutful was in the plates and bread were whipped away, we weren't asked if we had finished. It felt as though the staff wanted to get us out and go home although it wasn't even 9pm. I wouldn't hurry back but other reviews suggest different so maybe we were just there in a bad day.

We found this restaurant near our hotel on a recent visit to NYC. So cute and cozy. Only about 12 tables! Delicious, hearty pasta dishes and very friendly service.

I love Italian food and New York sets a very high bar for Italian Restaurants. I found Sam's from trip Advisor, I was looking for a mid price restaurant walking distance from my hotel. On the plus side the restaurant did not require a reservation to be seated. Particularly as I was a solo diner that was a plus. Staff were friendly and helpful. The restaurant was both comfortable and in keeping with the neighborhood. They had a good wine list, but as a one top I decided to stick with the house wines rather than order a bottle I could not have finished. The house Cabernet was nice, a robust flavor with much fruit. The wine unfortunately was the high point of the meal. To be clear nothing was bad but the house salad was nothing more than some mixed greens and tomatoes with an adequate vinaigrette. The bread was decent but no more. One of the specials of the night was a "home made Lasagna". It was a disappointment. Again to be clear it was not bad but it was bland. It was dominated by a decent red sauce which gave it is taste. But the meat if there was any contributed nothing to the taste which was dominated by cheese. The parmigiana that was baked on was again good but not baked to my taste and the ricotta accounted for too much of the dinner. Given the reviews I was disappointed. I have certainly had worse but there are better meals at this price point in NYC.

We used to go here all the time when we lived in New Jersey, and we always loved it. We moved from this area 5 years ago, and just happened to be back NYC, and thought we would try it again. The owner Max, remembers us from long ago. He got us a table, even though he was fully booked. The good was fabulous, and the service was outstanding. The real reason you should go here is because Max loves people, he loves what he does, and this is The best Retaraunt in NYC, because Max owns it.

like dining in Italy. 5 stars. fabulous food and the Service is great. don't miss out. you will not be sorry.

Very nice and quiet restaurant with a great warmth. Very good Italian and other dishes. Excellent service from owner and staff Salads were fresh. It was very crowded. seems thay have a lot of satisfied regular guests.

I found this place in 2015 and have returned several times as I have yet to have a bad meal here. Friendly service and not-too-bad prices are always good, but the food is fantastic. Most recently had the tortellini and even typing about it made me hungry. Good wine selection, too. What's even more fun is I've dined here alone (it's not an ideal sit-by-yourself place, but it was fine), brought my team from work here and brought friends/family here. It's been great in each case. At the very least, in a part of town where overpriced "meh" food is at every stone's throw, it's nice to have this place. It's much more akin to a restaurant you would find in a more outlying neighborhood than near Grand Central. Definitely give it a shot.

If youâre an Italian restaurant and you canât make pasta, then you have a problem! Penne vodka, penne was way over cooked! It was about the furthest thing from Al Dante! The chicken Parmesan tasted weird because of their marinara sauce, which is not good at all⊠Wash it down with some stale bread and an $18 vodka!

Cute little restaurant. Very cozy and inviting. Had the veal parmigiana. It was excellent and a nice size portion. You wonât go home hungry. Staff was very attentive. Reasonably priced.

Everybody in our family was falling apart by dinnertime. Our hotel recommended this restaurant just two blocks away and it was perfect for what we needed. This low key restaurant offers an extensive menu. We had the special - veal scallopini, as well as lasagna and pasta. It was all delicious and everybody (including our picky eater) was happy.

We were staying just around the corner from this restaurant, on our last night we wanted to have an authentic Italian meal in a cosy restaurant, our Conceirge at our hotel recommended this restaurant and booked us a table. We arrived and were shown upstairs to our table, the food was excellent as was the bottle of wine. As soon as you entered this restaurant the smells were lovely. Beautiful food, lovely setting, friendly waiter and we enjoyed our last night in New York. Would definately recommend this restaurant you will not be disappointed.

We have dined twice in this excellent restaurant and highly recommend it. The authentic Italian menu is extensive, and the service friendly and highly professional. Our chicken parmigiana and pasta bolognese dishes were superb and, for New York, reasonably priced. The dining room is a lovely oasis from the cityâs hustle and bustle. A nice touch is the huge, complimentary basket of bread. Try the tartufo for a tasty, and surprisingly large, dessert.

We had my mom's 96th birthday celebration for 14 people (upstairs.) The ambience was perfect (warm and homey) , the food was sumptuous (as always), and Sam was the consummate host (again, as always.) People attended from all over the country. This was a well-healed , well traveled, up scale crowd. Long story short , everyone LOVED it. Huge success. Value was also off the charts, especially for NYC. Thanks Sam!

This is a wonderful hidden gem! The food, service and abiance were fantastic ... I can't wait to go back there!

Stopped by at 9 .. walked in outside sign says 10 pm , website says 10 pm and other sites say 10 pm. Waiter miserable said kitchen is closed.. long term customer that have sent many people here.. really kitchen closed on a Friday nite at 9 pm??? I guess staff want to go home.. sadly owner and his son not here.. we would have been served. Go elsewhere!! Wonât recommend again or go back .. and we went and ordered to go during Coverage s ..

Our group of 3 old friends managed an early reservation mid-week and Sam's, an absolutely wonderful, small, intimate authentic Italian restaurant. In spite of our late arrival (traffic), our table was held and we enjoyed a slow, steady and wonderful evening, just as if we were in Rome. We ordered several dishes -- all of whom were so tasty and well prepared. My appetizer of burrata cheese and cold sautéed veggies was delicious, perfectly accompanied by slices of Italian bread. For the main course, I ordered the special pasta of the day, large lobster ravioli a la vodka. So rich and tasty -- pasta was perfectly prepared and presented. My friends raved about their dishes -- one had Jumbo Shrimp Francese and the other was Chicken Portobello. We loved the pace of service by our waiter, and how attentive all of the staff were to every detail. The place is smallish (although we never saw whether there is seating upstairs) but we felt comfortable and the atmosphere was very nice with light Italian music in the background. Would love to return and highly recommend.

Old place close to Grand Central. We had very good service, and two folks in our party ended up ordering something that wasn't on the menu, so if you don't see something, ask them - including wine by the glass. Portions were very big, southern style Italian and very good.

We visited this restaurant on Christmas eve as a family and thoroughly enjoyed it. We had a friendly welcome and were guided to a table on the first floor. Our appetizers and entrees were superb and we really couldn't fault anything. The staff are very friendly and the environment is cosy. I would recommend this lovely little place if you are in the area.

We enjoyed our meal upstairs with a nice bottle of wine, caesar salads and a couple of pasta entrees. My husband had the meat tortellini in light cream sauce and I had the squid ink pasta in a creamy, mushroom sauce. Both were cooked nicely, served hot and with nice flavors. We shared a rich, crispy cannoli for dessert. Our hotel concierge recommended this not so easy to spot place. Reasonably priced menu with lots of local regulars...usually a good sign. It was a quaint, warm environment with good food. Give it a try...

After eating in restaurants where the bill averaged $100 per person, it was a pleasant surprise to dine in a small restaurant where the food is terrific and didn't feel like an ATM pumping out twenty-dollar bills. Great menu, wine list and desserts at a reasonable price. Keep the secret.

We were a little hesitant as it was empty at dinner time, turns out we were just lucky because as soon as we sat it got crowded! The food was great and our waitress was great! Truly enjoyed the BBQ food served and the cold beer.

The baked clams were excellent...small and tender! I could have eaten 2 dozen! My pasta dish was very good (linguine/clams/red sauce), but the clams were rubbery. I'm not sure if they were fresh, but it didn't seem so. The water boy was excellent...right there to fill your glasses every time. The waiter had an attitude we could have done without. The second waiter that finished the first waiter's job was very nice. Sam was gracious and caring. I still would go again and enjoy the salad, scampi and other dishes again! Great neighborhood gem in murray hill.
Dinner at Sam's Place
My wife and I had a really good dinner at this gem in Murray Hill. The food was great and Massimo was the perfect host, even offering us free limoncello at the end of our excellent meal. Tracey had the veal marsala & mushrooms, with extra vegetables specially requested, & I had the chicken arabiata - both meals were delicious. We shared a bottle of Aussie red wine, which was surprisingly delicious! A very nice evening, which is why we are definitely going back tomorrow night to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary on 30 May 2017 đđ·đ
