I have been to this restaurant a number of time with my family and friends. We have either gone before a show or just for a dinner out. Spectacular every time. The food, service with wonderful Italian gentleman and atmosphere are great. This time there were 4 of us, I was in town visiting with my friend, her daughter and close friend. We all loved everything. We love that they will make anything the way you want and can order almost anything even if it is not on the menu. My husband and daughter both think they have the best Chicken Parmesan (which by the way is not really on the menu) in the the world (literally) as they have both traveled and eaten at many Italian Restaurants all over the world, including Italy. There are great desserts here as well. Even though we were stuffed, we made room for dessert. We all loved the Tiramisu, but my friends enjoyed the white chocolate mousse as well. We will be back for sure and my friends are now letting their Italian friends, grandparents etc. know that this is one of the best Italian restaurants in NYC. Thanks for making this one of the highlights of our trip to NYC.

Appalled by the rudeness and ignorance of the owner, Gerardo Bruno. Booked a table for 4 for Sat. June 27 to celebrate our 12th wedding anniversary. We visit NY regularly from Bermuda and it was our 3rd visit to San Pietro. My Bermudian husband wore his traditional formal attire, dressy Bermuda shorts, navy blazer, bowtie, very British, very stylish. The hostess looked at my husband and you could see that she had no idea about Bermuda attire. She called the Maitre D who told us that "they only had a table outside...", we said we want a table inside then they told us that there was no shorts allowed inside the restaurant. As my husband had met the owner the last time, he requested to speak to the owner. Mr. Bruno came to the door and said in a very abrupt and uncouth manner that "shorts are not allowed inside and that's it", and walked away. We could not believe it! My husband was maybe the best dressed that night! We waited for our friends and went to spend $1,000 in another italian restaurant that always welcome us and our Bermuda and US friends when we entertain. Mr. Bruno, you may be located on Madison Avenue but you are not a gentleman. You left Salerno, your Southern Italian village but Salerno has not left you!!! We have travelled all over the world and dined in the best restaurants. My husband has his shirts tailored made in Hong Kong for the past 25 years, you need a better shirt by the way and a serious hair cut. We will make sure we will not recommend your establishment to anyone.

Great restaurant....no connection to San Pietro of Positano....although the owners are from Amalfi (Salerno). Expensive....but worth it for great food (I had branzino) and great wine (Gavi di Gavi). My wife and I were visiting NYC and staying at the U. Club...so very convenient. Superb service by Arber and maitre Willi as well as by owner Manolo. You won't regret this memorable restaurant experience.

San Pietro is a power restaurant in the city. I'm beginning to wonder if people only come here to write bad reviews. I don't understand why anyone would ever write a bad review of this restaurant. Either you do not understand NYC, the restaurant or you have no idea what you're talking about. So here's my advice--if you see a bad review, ignore it. Having lived in NYC for years, this is THE RESTAURANT to go to to see all the power brokers on Wall Street. So what does that tell you about this restaurant? The food, service and ambiance is outstanding!

We were in New York for the weekend and decided to splurge on at least one "over the top" meal. We chose San Pietro, at random, out of a list provided by our hotel. The waitstaff is top notch, we lacked for nothing and never did we feel rushed or did it appear that more drinks or wine were being pushed to increase sales. My wife, children and I each made sure that we ordered something different so that we could sample a wide variety of dishes. Each dish was better than the one before it. The desserts deserve their own line: INCREDIBLE! Pricey...but, you get what you pay for.

We received a warm welcome when we arrived, with some very personal attention from whom I assume was the owner. We talked about the things we liked, and he made us a menu on the spot. We never opened the ones handed to us. We had the stew and the pesto linguini. Just fantastic. Linguine done to perfection, and the stew had a very nice mix of flavors. Interestingly, we had fresh potato chips served with our meal. The saltiness was a nice contrast to the sweetness of the stew. Definitely recommend!

Let me start by saying that the service was excellent and the wine choice perfect. Good ambiance but a bit loud. Waiter described the specials as being absolutely delicious. The best. We ordered two of the appetizer specials. Sardines (two to be exact) breaded and sautéed with oil and herbs and a burrata salad with tomatoes and herbs. Each was $26.00! Just way too much money. The entree of fish was good but it was not the best I've ever had. I think the food is a bit too expensive. We dine out quite a bit and do not mind paying for fabulous dinners but it was just too much for what we had. Again I want to say that the service was excellent.

The atmosphere is special, and the food was so delicious! I enjoyed every bite. The staff was also very attentive, and we had a great evening there. Highly recommend!

My wife and I ended up at San Pietro by pure chance when feeling hungry and looking for a restaurant. The classic interior and authentic setup was just topped by the quality of service and the amazing truly Italian food. Although it was a quite expensive lunch at over $300 with just one glasse of wine each, it was well worth it! They also serve typical Italian dishes you don't find too often, e.g. rabbit.

Restaurant exterior and interior looks like it belongs in Italy, rather than Midtown NY. Very personalized service and experience. Food was excellent. Authentic flavor and presentation, but it is not fancy cuisine. Menu was unnecessary since the waiter provided specials and information to the table. I did look at the menu and was grateful for the waiter's description since the size of the print on the menu is tiny. Highly recommend.

Great ambiance to do business meetings as it is quiet but yet lively. Delicious food. Wonderful and friendly service.

Great restaurant and super food alongside some great service …..the waiter was top drawer. Nice ambiance and great decor.

When I was traveling and eating alone is a strange city, I always looked for a family owned restaurant, doing business in the same name, for forty years or more. My thinking was that, while I might get a great meal, I would not get a bad one. My rule for NYC is “Italian.” According to Quora, there 993 Italian restaurants in the city. Competition has served to drive all of the bad ones out of business. At those that survive, one will not get a bad meal; at most one will get a great meal. San Pietro serves a great meal. I ordered the special pasta, Linquine with lobster and clams. The pasta was al dente, the lobster and clams sweet and tender. Wines by the glass are a little expensive but they had my favorite Champagne. We were seated immediately in a lovely dining room. The service was personal but unobtrusive. We did not stay for dessert but the amuse bouche were sufficient.

Putting aside the cost (for the moment), we had a wonderful dinner here on Saturday night. To start, we had tuna carpaccio (amazing), beef carpaccio, and a salad. Then we had a pasta course of fettucine with freshly shaved black truffles. Needless to say, it was unbelievable. The waiter had a very heavy hand with the truffles. Then 3 of us had fish, and the fourth the lamb. The only course that wasn't really good was dessert; the hazelnut gelato that I had was ordinary, as were the cookies. The service was lovely, very solicitous but not intrusive. The only downside to this place was the extraordinary expense. The food was solid but not mind-blowing, so the costs are hard to rationalize.

Ill be honest. With the bad reviews we were scared to go. Actually we almost cancelled and went elsewhere. But my friend assured us it would be awesome. And it was! It exceeded our expectations. They treated us like family and everyone else that was dining like family. So gracious, and inviting. It was like eating in their homes. The food was out of this world. The best we have eaten in NYC so far by a long margin. I would recommend this place to everyone. And as a matter a fact if you dont go you're missing out. I can only assume the bad reviews are from competitors in the area. Not one thing in any of the bad reviews was true what so ever. This is the only place in the last 4 days we have eaten at that we would actually return to. If I could give them 6 stars I would have!

We loved this place. It takes us back to the restaurants that we loved so much in Italy. It felt like we were back in Italy again. The food is outstanding. We had the Bronzino (Mediterranean Sea Bass) baked in sea salt and prepared at the table which makes it extra special. It was excellent. The best Bronzino we ever had. What made it was the exceptional olive oil and I mean exceptional olive oil from their family estate in Italy. The grilled vegetables were ample and done to perfection. We finished with the Tiramisu. This is the best meal that we have had in years. The service was true old world. We were treated like family. The next time we return to NYC, this is stop #1!

Traditional Italian restaurant. Better for dinner or a more formal lunch. It is on the high priced side but worth it for this area.

Used to be great, last three visits have been horrible. Do not give up on a good restaurant that easily but this is it. $500 with tip and all three courses were salty, fatty, flabby, all three had to be sent back, and they came out with a "complimentary" dessert. Who cares. This is it. Finished.

Classic northern Italian cooking in a beautiful setting. Perfect for a business meal or for a special occasion. Service is very good with about a dozen off the menu items. A special was the St. Joseph pastry in honor of the holiday. Been here several times before and would certainly return.

Great Italian food with a lovely ambience. Lunch or dinner, but very busy. Suggest you book your table! Langoustines are fantastic!

Even if the host, Manolo is definitely a great character.... 56 usd x 1 plate of pasta 56 usd x 1 plate of ham 60 usd for spaghetti with clams 2 glasses of falanghina 40 usd … … … + service = 440 USD x 2 people.

Delectable... truly ... everything we ordered was superb: red snapper, lasagna, mozzarella & tomato, satdines ... Looking forward to going back again!

This was a business dinner on someone else's expense account. And it was a wonderful dinner. The service was outstanding ... some of the best I've ever had ... very personal, friendly, patient. The waiter basically recited the menu to us (in a heavy Italian accent, I might add ... listen closely kids, it's going to get tricky!), which was very impressive. The food was absolutely delicious. I had a wonderful chicken dish which would have been enough for two people (hated to leave so much uneaten). Other pasta dishes were excellent as well. The zucchini flower appetizer is a must! The pace of dinner was extremely relaxed ... very good for a business dinner or romantic couples dinner. The dessert menu was expansive and I recommend the tiramisu highly. Yes, it's expensive. But for a wonderful meal and fine dining experience, I would be willing to go back and pay for it myself next time. It's a worthwhile treat.

Elegantly refined Italian restaurant in the heart of mid-town Manhattan. Superb pastas, whole fish baked in salt crust, extensive wine list, delicasies flown in daily from Europe... The chef is a master. And the ambiance transports us to another place in time. Owner and wait staff are attentive and engagjng. Very much the business lunch scene .... although I prefer dinner there! This Is always on our "must visit list" each and every time we are in NYC.

Visited as part of business meeting. Menu is extensive, food was excellent atmosphere is good. It is pricey, but it is in the heart of midtown and the food will NOT disappoint!

I went here on a recommendation, and in full disclosure, on an expense account. But even I was shocked by the bill. Two people, three courses, $100 bottle of wine, and the total bill including tip was just under $500. We didn't see the menu (recommendations from waiter), which was our first mistake. Food was good. Nothing to write home about but tasty. Proscuitto, buratta to start. Definitely just cut proscuitto. Pasta with seafood as next course. Tasty. Lamb osso bucco - didn't fall of the bone like promised. Not bad, not great. Tiramusu for dessert. That was fantastic. It's been a long time since my face showed shock when looking at a bill. So if you go, don't be surprised. Enjoy the food, the great service, and know what you're getting yourself into.

How boneheaded could we have been, going into this place, anxious for warmth on a cold winter night, without checking the menu. The prices are straight up and over the wall, like a glass of pedestrian pinot noir for $28. The meat and fish entrees were $40, $50 and up, and the pastas in the $30's. Okay, so maybe it's worth it. We skipped all salads, appetizers and desserts and went for pasta, rigatoni we think. What we got was a densely packed heap of compressed pasta. We had to cut it with out knives. It came with a slice of fried Parmesan cheese and a generous enough serving of tomato sauce with bits of sausage lamb, veal and basil. It was filling, and eminently, indeed promptly forgettable. San Pietro, in its favor, provides some generous touches, like a free bowl of mixed olives when you sit down, and a free and generous mix of biscotti when you finish. The service is quick and attentive, too. But for what you get, the pricing's an outrage.

San Pietro has a great location, in the heart of NYC, no better spot. The restaurant is not ultra fancy but very attractive, lively and well-appointed. Service is king here, from the hostess at the door, to immediate table attention, to the captain and servers. I prefer the front room, always lively, viewing the bar scene, and just enjoying the surroundings, very good food and again, the excellent service

San Pietro is a gem. One of the best Italian Restaurants we've been to. The chef personally explains the menu. The Maitre'd, Manolo, was attentive and made sure everything was perfect. We split an order of Spaghetti Alla Chitarra to start. Among the best ever. One of us had bronzino which was done perfectly. The other had the veal special of the night. Excellent. We topped the meal off with a double espresso with gelato. Fantastic. We will definitely go back next time in NYC.

Amazing! The owner/host was incredibly personable and delivered over the top service all night! The food was extremely fresh and the flavors paired perfectly with the suggested wine. Eight of us dined in tonight and we all enjoyed our meals. We’ll worth the cost!!

I wished I'd read the reviews first but as bad luck would have it, I just walked in for a late dinner. After some bad food, the even worse surprise came with the bill when it became apparent that the fettucine special with seasonal white truffle cost $140!!! I know that truffle is expensive, but this is just off the scales. No advance warning was given. I thoroughly recommend against this place.

This was recommended by a foodie friend who visits NYC regularly, and we were glad he did. We enjoyed the Paccheri della Domenica, $48, Neapolitan-style rigatoni with sausage, lamb, beef, and tomatoes. We like Saltimbocca as a test of Italian restaurants because of the mix of textures, aromas, and flavors from what is usually made with veal, prosciutto, and fresh sage leaves in a delicate white wine and butter sauce. It wasn’t on the menu, but the owner said, of course, they could make it. The veal was fork-tender, and the prosciutto was one of the best we’ve tasted in any similar dish. San Pietro has an excellent wine list, including by the glass. We enjoyed a 2019 Super Tuscan for $28 and a 2013 Brunello for $32. Service was effusive and polished. Portions are large. We’ll be back.

I come to this outstanding Italian Restaurant on every visit to NYC. The atmosphere, staff and service is First Class. This is an Old World type dining experience with a wide variety of outstanding food selections. Typically, I just trust their recommendations and order from the evening's specials - I have NEVER been disappointed. They have a full bar of quality liquors and an extensive wine selection. This restaurant provides a high quality dining experience. I highly recommend and will be back on my next visit to NYC.

Got here a little before the restaurant opened July 7th (4:45) We sat and got drinks the Italian cuisine is different than the normal Italian red sauce cooking. Frank was looking forward to lasagna but they didn't have it. He had ravioli which were good. Judy had fish. I had a dish with truffles which was ok. Kathy had a macaroni dish that was just fair. All in all was fair

Between 2010 and 2013 service has not changed. 5/5- but the food quality has significantly decreased. We were very disappointed. We usually do business dinners there- but will take this business to another restaurant.

Everything there is great- but really love their dover sole

Over rated and over priced! Friendly service and very small portions of pasta for extremely high prices. There are way too many wonderful Italian restaurants in the area that give you better attention, more generous portions and a nice atmosphere. This is the second average meal we experienced here and the last.

I went here on a Thursday night while on a business trip. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere, and would have been romantic if I were there with a significant other. The food was mostly Northern Italian, and was pretty good. I can't find anything in particular that I didn't like, but I didn't leave saying I have to return. The total bill for 1 glass of wine, a starter, and a main pasta course was about $120. I know it's NYC, but it still seemed a bit pricy for what I got. The only thing that I didn't like is that they don't give you a menu. Instead, the waiter comes up and gives you a 5-6 minute speech about all of the dishes (in a thick Italian accent). It was hard to understand what the options were, and there was definitely no mention of a price with anything. As a quick aside, one thing I really did like is that they have Amarone wine by the glass. I've never seen Amarone by the glass anywhere else.

This is not your hipster nuova cucina type of Italian place. This is right out of the traditional school, which is so retro it should be cool again. The place is lovely inside, all burnished wood and soft lighting. Crisp napery and fine stemware. The maitre d will come to the table and recite the specials, and you will likely a) not fully understand him nor b) remember what he said by the time he's done. No worries, though, just ask, and he'll repeat and explain. Specials are not priced, although when I ordered the pasta with shaved truffles, he did state the price, because truffles are quite expensive. I assume the other specials are in line with the other items on the menu. Everything was delicious, the truffle pasta was exquisite, service was perfect. The only reason I didn't give five stars was that this is a VERY expensive place, but perfect for that special occasion.

Stumbled across this restaurant when walking down East 54th. Needed something fairly quiet after a long London flight and didn't fancy a crowded restaurant. The emptyness of the restaurant should have served as a warning sign. There were clearly a lot of surplus staff standing around but this meant our service quality was very good all night. Starters of pasta, bread, dipping oil was pleasant but not sensational. I went for the main of spanish prawns with squid. They were all overcooked and the portion was not generous. Having just come back from Cataluna where the portions are huge and the prawns are unbelievable, I admit I was comparing the two experiences unfairly. A ravioli main was fairly run of the mill. Wines were very, very expensive. We had a recommendation that was OK in taste but exorbitantly expensive at over $110

Found this place by accident but it was really good pasta. The staff was the best part, they were so welcoming and friendly, I felt like I was at small hole in the wall place in Italy. The overall place felt upscale and homey. Highly recommend.

We love to go there , the food is very good , the staff helpful and the Maître D has a strong in a good way personality! They have a delicious olive oil that you can buy . Book your table in advance!

My wife and I have eaten here several times over the years. Great charm, service and food. Wine list excellent. One block behind the St. Regis. Truffled fettuccini excellent.

Food good but hardly exciting, basically an Italian inflected steakhouse. Noisy but nice atmosphere. Hey cleared my plate without asking if I wanted the leftovers. Pricey.

I have been coming to San Pietro's for over 10 years, I can honestly say I have never had a bad meal here The owner, the head waiter and staff are dedicated to an excellent dining experience I have brought my family, friends and business clients here Always amazing Is it above average in price? Yes. But so is my car. I am a very hard grader of restaurants and this is well worth it. Exceptional .

Every dish was delicious. Service was flawless and attentive. Good wine list.Stylish decor. However, it was not that suitable for quiet conversation, which I did not like. Also, the bill was beyond my imagination.

Went there to have dinner with my family, we asked for truffle (130 a plate). It was advertised as white alba truffle, we got dried summer truffles, and they tried to improve the flavor adding copious amounts of truffle oil. When we asked for the white truffle they tried to trick us into believing black summer truffle was white truffle, Total scam, we felt cheated.

We have been all over the world and when visiting NYC we go to this hybrid neighborhood/fine dining/power restaurant which has the absolutely best food and most personal contentious service.

I have been going here for years and its always a lucky day when I go. The food is impeccable, the service attentive, and the power lunch surroundings make it fun people watching....new Yorkers are a funny breed!

One might expect some gastronomic preparation of a dover sole when it costs $ 85. Instead, it was just ok. The prices of the San Pietro reflect more the need to see and be seen than the quality of the service or the food. I love warm italian atmosphere, but it would be nice to be able to hald a conversation and not have the Maitre d' to be the loudest of a table that is the noisiest next to us. It is simly not worth paying the outrageous prices they charge for average Italian food.

Recently dined here with my wife and have several times in the past. The food was good and the service prompt if not friendly and engaging. The price though for black truffle risotto, and yes I know truffles are expensive, was beyond the pale. The wine recommended by the captain at $110 was ok but a very ordinary Barbera d' Alba, overpriced by about $30. I should have made my own selection from the List, I may well have spent more but would have had a better wine. Overall a flat experience that simply isn't up t it's pretense. The place seems overpopulated by expense account types for whom spending too much for ok food seems to be a badge of honor.

They cleverly do not give you a menu, instead the waiter recites what they have, with no prices. They then proceed to charge you anything they like (and they like really big figures). No wonder they are happy to give a "complimentary" tiramisu at the end... The food isn't bad but is not exceptional either. That, combined with the extortionate prices means this is a no go.

The reviews on this restaurant are correct - it's incredible! The service and ambiance are top notch and the food was phenomenal. We each had salads to start - Caesar for me and a pear, walnut and Gorgonzola for my wife. She had the chicken and artichoke entree and I chose the dry aged rib eye - neither of us could finish. We had a strawberries and Gelato dessert that while light was also delicious! Our server was incredibly knowledgeable and treated us so well and took pains to make us feel welcomed and valued. We will dine here again!

Our hotel, the Peninsula, recommended we try this restaurant for good italian. The atmosphere was nice. We had a small but lovely table outdoors. The crowd was very local - which again was nice. However, the food was quite underwhelming. Not bad but not especially noteworthy given where you are. Dinner for two, including wine, ran in the $425 range. Expected price given the locale but after walking the neighborhood for a few nights we are sorry that we gave this restaurant our business. Servers were pretentious. I guess they prefer the locals to the tourists! Next time we will choose to spend our dining dollars elsewhere!

Never hip but the food is terrific. It's always buzzing but the crowd feels business like. You'll get a verbal barrage of all the delicious choices in a heavily accented delivery. And that's great. When you end up ordering, you just can't go wrong. Fresh. Great quality. Authentic. For New York Italian refined portion size. This isn't about quantity it's quality. I've been a number of times and every time it's delicious. I sometimes feel too casually dressed and sometimes there's a big table of mobile phone touching investment bankers etc. , but as you devour a skates wing or truffle pasta or delicious salads, you'll forget all that. Friendly, traditional, good and very consistent.

This is an old line New York Italian restaurant with great food and great service and high prices but worth it for the experience and for the quality of food and service. The meal I had - a fish dish - was one of the best I have ever had. It was a snowy night with just a few people in the place but it was so comfortable I did not want to leave.

Stopped in here for a drink last year and were impressed enough with the atmosphere to put it on our dinner list for this year's trip. It's definitely a nice looking Italian restaurant, but for us, looks were deceiving. From the attitude we got from the guy who took our coats and then led us to our table, to the mediocre service, to the overpriced meal, we regretted our decision. This was easily the most expensive meal of our trip, and by a longshot, it was not our best. Highly overpriced. Needless to say, we won't be back.

Delicious food, excellent service and a warm atmosphere provide an enjoyable dining experience. Will return the next time we are in New York City!

We enjoyed lunch at one of our favorite restaurants in NYC. The food is always good with gracious service. It is on the pricier side, but sometimes it's worth a splurge!! I had a burrata salad and lemon veal. My husband opted for the veal chop and LOVED it!

Had a first rate meal with business partners here. The food quality was excellent, wine list superb, and the service was warm and professional. We ate and drank very well here, a great experience. Dont come with your pockets empty, it is not inexpensive.

This is a high end restaurant even for New York. Soups were $20; entrees about $58. The service was superb and the food was excellent, particularly the Tartufo for dessert. If you can afford it, you should go.

A terrific place to eat, but quite costly. The atmosphere is wonderful, and the Maitre D' quite the character. He made sure we were well fed...from appetizer to dessert. His attention was part of the fun and provided great entertainment value. They are serious about their food and about satisfying their clientele.

Walked by this place many times but never saw it. Then was invited by a regular...fabulous wine list, terrific service, excellent pasta and fish...highly recommend but expensive...another quiet NYC gem.

Great Italian restaurant, very well known for its clientele of top financial executives- hedge funds etc...Mostly male crowd, in avery opulent(but not golden~!) decor. Daily list of specials, recited by the maitre d"...nobody orders from the written menu that you have to request ! Excellent veal dishes, as well as fish of course (my favourite is the branzino cooked in salt, and of course amazing pasta dishes. Super great wine list, but all this comes at a price that the usual clients are more than willing to pay. Welcome to the New York Financial world...eating lunch !

My boss took me to San Pietro for a business lunch. Thank goodness for that, because the prices were absolutely outrageous. That aside, the food and service were beyond compare. We sat outside on a gorgeous, sunny day and the waiter greeted us promptly, reciting most of the menu from memory in hard to understand Italian-English. I ordered the lentil soup and seared tuna special. Both were absolutely outstanding. I'll be back, hopefully on someone else's nickel.

I have eaten at this restaurant over the years on a number of occasions. The Maitre D', who is an Off Off Broadway Show in itself, stuck his nose so high up in the air, it almost touched the ceiling, when I asked for the prices of each special. And there are many specials of the day. Too many! By the time that # 5 had been rambled off in an inaudible fashion, one forgets what the first was. And this goes on for at least a full 5 New York minutes. And who has really the time to listen to it all. How dare I ask for the prices? Such a faux pas in his Broadway eyes! He then mumbled from $ 65.00 and up and left. For the rest of the evening we were completely ignored. The tuna dish my business associate ordered was nothing special. No flavors, he said. Just plain! I had lobster and used my fingers. I asked for a finger bowl with lemon to clean my fingers. A finger bowl I did not get, but a wet semi hot napkin was delivered instead. I noticed at another table, when a new order was placed for yet another expensive bottle of red wine, I could overhear the name of the wine, and had studied the wine list, a new one swiftly arrived and was poured over and into the existing one. Well heavens! For such a pricy place, you would think that they know their business, actually they don't.

Spectacular surroundings, very personalized service, and incredible food- so unusual and creative. Dont order off the menu- the specials are so extensive just choose from this list. If you don't see what you want, or want your food cooked some other way just ask. For a restaurant in NYC to be in existence since 1992 is a statement itself to how good a place is.

I went to this place with my one-year-old son and my grandmother. The restaurant was empty, with only 2 tables occupied. Upon entering, the Italian gentleman at the entrance looked at me with the stroller without even helping me open the door, and when I entered, I asked if it was open and he asked if I had first seen the prices on the menu (which was a very rude comment). My son was hungry, so we sat down anyway and ordered a risotto and a branzino (both among the most expensive items on the menu), and I asked for a spoon to feed my baby. Since the spoon didn't arrive, I asked another waiter for it, and the italian gentleman arrived with the spoon and told me that "spoons don't flies". After that I told him that maybe he was the reason why the place was empty because he was rude with us all the time. Terrible!!! The food was okay, but nothing special. New York is full of much better Italian restaurants, and not as old as this one. The truth is, we received terrible service. We will never return, and I hope nobody goes so that this Italian gentleman doesn't treat them like he treated us.

Bottom line - do not come in unless someone is picking the bill for you. The place looks like the habitat of investment bankers that take their clients to 'discuss strategy' and expect them to pay the bill. During the dinner we had - the menu is presented dramatically by the head waiter - shouting the courses and making it into a big show. Once the food was it - it was good food - we had prociotto with burata that was good - as the products were good - although I had better burata - it lacked enough liquid cream as burata should. For mains we had couple of fish a chicken and pasta with short rib. All were good. I dare say not exceptional. So, back to the bottom line - if you are the banker - come in, if you are the client run away.

Excellent restaurant for lunch , the food was delicious. We had the soup of the day , tortellini with pesto , and rigatoni with veal ragu ( our friends are Italian) , the pasta was perfectly "al dente ", scallops, dover sole and a tiramisu , everything was amazing. Good service perhaps a little bit slow . We will definitely go back !

I went to this spot with a group of 20. They handled the group with grace good humor. They had small parties too. There are many specials each day in addition to a large menu. Plates are large and mains are priced between 30 and 40 dollars but all good. The wine list was good and they bring bread olives etc to the table. We had variety ofee dishes at my table and all were happy. Plenty of choices pasta, fish, meats and veggie options. Enjoy.

I must admit I have walked by this restaurant many times and sorry I never stopped in. The four of us really enjoyed our meals and the service was attentive. A Roman atmosphere! We will definitely return.

STAY AWAY…TYEY OVERBOOK AND KEEP YOU WAITING TOO LONG…when we complained they told us people that were supposed to leave by a certain tie were still there…I asked why they would allow that and they just shruged. In other words THEY CAN’T GUARANTEE YOUR RESERVATION

An old favourite and never tire of returning. Always a warm welcome from the Owner and his staff who look after their guests so well. The menu and wine list offer such a wide selection and one cannot be disappointed with one's choice. Not inexpensive but good value.

We went to this restaurant on the recommendation of a friend. We were not disappointed. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted warmly and given a nice table for 2. The Maitre d was gracious and told us of the specials (too many to remember) all sounded special! My husband had pasta Bolonaise and I had delicious veal scallopini. Topped off with a Tartufo for dessert. We ordered the house Chianti and it was delicious. We would highly recommend this restaurant. It is expensive but worth the expense for us. The wait staff was VERY attentive.

The good: Basic Italian fare prepared simply and perfectly. Pasta and risotto were wonderful. The veal ravioli was delicious and the simple risotto with mushrooms was almost perfect. Rack of lamb was quite tasty and prepared perfectly. Service was attentive without being overbearing. The meal was paced well. The bad: I am a native New Yorker (born in Manhattan) and even for me the prices were borderline ridiculous. Appetizers started at $20 and rose from there. Pastas started at $30 and risotto at $35, with meat and fish at $50. All this for basic Italian food. Also, the dining room was quite small and cramped, as were the tables. Bottom line: If you have $$$ to burn or are with a very generous client you will certainly enjoy San Pietro. If you are in the other 99% like me I would suggest you try one of the many Italian restaurants in NYC that serve excellent food at half the price.

This is a gem of an Italian restaurant within a block of some of the finest hotels in upper mid town Manhattan. I had chicken, very lightly "breaded" which was sautéed in butter and lemon. It was incredible. The service was wonderful and everyone seemed to be Italian. The restaurant itself is quiet and beautifully decorated. The only "complaint" is that the wine list was ridiculously priced. The wine menu is extensive, but the least expensive wine was around $95 (naturally without tax or tip) and wine which I customarily order ran between $250 - $350.

I've dined here several times. I enjoy the restaurant's ambience and attentive service. However, the prices are just "over the top"! There are just too many other italian restaurants in NYC which offer a much better value proposition for the diner. My advice is to go if someone else is picking up the tap; otherwise skip it. There are much better choices available in Midtown.

The food was absolutely delicious. I had the seafood salad and the pasta with seafood. I do love seafood! My guest had the tomatoes with Burrata cheese and a pasta dish with tomato sauce. All four dishes were great. But the best thing is the service. The staff worked wonderfully well as a team, so all our needs were met without asking.

The advanced billing of this place was a traditional italian cantina. True to billing. Very friendly and attentive service..certainly the highlight of the visit. Food was good with an interesting mix of specials and base menu. Traditional old room...somewhat interesting. Bathrooms are in desperate need of an upgrade. Very interesting crowd...Park Avenue trust fund families, executives from New Jersey, odd couples who seemed as if they had just met (putting it nicely)...very eclectic. Not worth a seeking out, but if you are in the neighborhood, stop by.

This is the place you can enjoy truly Italian food with old charm and style. The food is traditional made with good ingredients. If you can't find your favourite dish on the menu, you can always ask... The service comes with a sense of Italian humour and is really excellent! However, better not to look the check when leaving...

I had one of the most great dinner in New York, we were treated like queens. Try langostinos and do not missed the tasty appetizers. Yummy

This is your classic Italian Restaurant at its best - décor - food - service Your host Gerardo warmly greets you, Manola delivered the specials in great style and Julio from Equador could not be more attentive Fegato alla Veneziana was to “live for”

1.5/5-- I would not recommend this place. For the high price we paid, the ravioli only had like 5 pieces!! What rip off. The service was very friendly but they were almost buttering us up before slapping the outrageous check down. Go somewhere else or spend your money on a show or something else in New York! This was my only unpleasant eating experience in the city to be honest...

Very overpriced but good food. I came here with my husband twice. The first time they were “out” of the wine we ordered, and recommended one for about $30 more. Ok for a one off. Second time, we ordered a Barolo and they said “oh if you like Barolo, try this (more expensive) one...” Then I went on a business lunch on someone else’s account. They did it again!! Good food. Exorbitantly expensive wine.

Old family restaurant, the food was good and special, not the typical pizza and pasta you get everywhere. Terrace was nice, they even had some smoker's places which you don't find in NYC that often these days

Have your lunch or dinner in this wonderfull restaurant and you will feel like being in Italy!!! from the appetizers to the desserts everythinh absolutely everything is perfect as perfect is the service AAA+++ five stars !!!!

San Pietro was filled with out of town, mostly, business men ( only 6 women in the place), loud and doing deals. The food is excellent, pastas fresh and tasty. Wines by the glass excellent. Service a tad slow. Be prepared for the racket.

We've been dining here for more than 20 years. Sometimes it's great, sometimes it's totally forgettable or disappointing. It's vey expensive. The service is good. Tables in the front room are all nice. Do not accept a table in the back room on the weekdays, as it is packed. Sometimes I feel this is a good meal, and sometimes I feel that I have been ripped off. The service is very good.

Had lunch with business colleagues. Had spaghetti for starters and followed by a chicken dish. Superb cooking and great lunch crowd. I a gem in New York

We ate at several restaurants whilst on our recent trip to NYC. Many were excellent, but this establishment was superb. The position and ambience is sublime, as is the welcome and the service, nothing is too much trouble. The menu was presented, together with an explanation of the specials. The diners were obviously mostly regulars, but that did not make our experience any less of an meal to be enjoyed. The food and wine matched the quality of the service. The cost of the meal might cause some to think twice, but you get what you pay for in this restaurant, the best of everything. Dr & Mrs Lando

We celebrated my sons birthday and our last night in NYC here. The food and whole experience was excellent. The staff was very attentive and had wonderful specials. He brought a dessert out at the end and we all sang happy birthday. The presentation was lovely, all four of us had excellent meals and drinks. We tried each other’s meals, and the Tagliolini Cacio e Pepe deli 7 Re do Roma was our favorite, the homemade pasta was delicious, as was the Tiramisu. We will visit again!

Come here for lunch or dinner at least twice a year and never am disappointed. The service is outstanding and tenured, the food is amazing and the dining room, while not fancy, is classic in the sense of a bygone era. Had the tuna carpaccio with truffles to start followed by a veal shank. WOW!! Just Wow!! See you in a couple of months.

Genuine Italian Lunch with so many choices - all excellent. Terrific service. Wonderful atmosphere. Be prepared to spend.

It was her Ladyship's birthday and she chose San Pietro. The quality of the service is 2nd to none in Manhattan. The food was unbelievable and wine was gorgeous. Scallops, Veal, Cannoli all sounds very straight forward but not at San Pietro. Our experience was simply fantastic.

The food a was very good. The wait staff was excellent. The wine list is extensive and good. The restaurant is nicely decorated and romantic. It does present as more of an adult restaurant than one for small children. They also have curbside seating.

Love this restaurant. Southern Italian wtih Amalfi Coast themes. White linens on the table so don't go in wearing jeans and your best zip track jacket. Give this place some respect. The staff gives you a lot of respect. They are professional and serious. Don't be offended if you can 't make friends with your waiter or your Host. They are there to explain their dishes, serve you in every way, and turn over the tables but make no mistake about it, the food is good and so is the wine list.

We had a wonderful lunch. We love Manolo! His reading of the specials is so entertaining. The food is also fantastic!

This was my first visit to Ristorante San Pietro and my first impression set me off on the right foot. I was early and ordered a glass of Barolo at the very small, but inviting bar and chatted with maitre d' (who happened to be the owner). I was impressed by his depth of knowledge and experience with a broad range of Italian wines, including my favorite Barolos. He and the bartender were both very warm and friendly. As my large business group arrived, we populated a table for 8 and the service we experienced was near perfect and some of the dishes were incredible. We got a lot of work done and we had a great meal. It's expensive, without a doubt, but I'll be sure to go back again sometime soon.

Great menu, food preparation, food presentation, service, and setting. Exceeded our expectations. The staff seem to work together seamlessly to provide a wonderful experience. Grazie Mille!

The food was exceptional and the wait staff was authentic. The owner greeted us personally and the waiter knew the entire menu by heart. Try the squash blossoms.

Expensive but worth it. Busy every night with business and society types. Old school Italian charm and accommodating to special requests

visited San Pietro and the ambience and food was delightful. the staff was really good, definitely reminded me of restaurants in Italy. the food was delicious and the staff engaging. Went with my husband and friends and everyone had a really good meal and the dessert were beautiful and delicious. would highly recommend this restaurant.

Coming back from a trip we went for Saturday lunch with my wife. Portuguese Maitre D is old school professional knows how to ease customers and serve properly . Not too many like him left in Nyc, We had a bottle of Chateau Neufchâtel du pape, I had fettuccine with mushroom and black truffle to start and salt crusted branzino that Maitre d de boned. My wife had veal chop. Everything was really excellent. Lunch crown right before x Mas os bit touristy but that’s expected this time of the year. I highly recommend the place.

Your meal will certainly be excellent, in a beautiful gastronomic temple with innovative tastes Professionally served by waiters who have worked at restaurant for Decades. I only mark it down somewhat because a $100 and over per person lunch with a half bottle of wine seems too expensive. If your wallet permits, you won't regret it.go and enjoy.

Let me begin with The waitstaff….. there were lots of men running around in suits doing nothing while the “head honcho” screams the specials at you, half of which are not available when you try to order them…. Seven pm in NYC is early to already be out of things since most diners there go out pretty late….but I guess it sounds good to offer a lot of specials…. The wine we wanted was unavailable, ok we spent $200 on a wine we didn’t even want….. the food, mediocre and expensive…. The spicy pasta with shrimp was anything but spicy and very “ fishy”….. not authentic Italian at all. Never going back

This is fine dining at its best. The food is truly outstanding, the fish and veal dishes were delicate and wonderfully flavorful. In addition to a comprehensive regular menu of pastas, risottos, meat and fish, the list of specials was just as lengthy, so truly something for everyone! Service was warm and welcoming, so despite the regal setting, you feel like the very welcomed guest of an old friend. Very suitable for a night with friends, can do business gatherings just as well, given distance between tables allows for private conversation. All this comes at a price....the prices are steep.

Watch out for reviews with Zagat. Hubby chose this place for my birthday. He made reservations and told them it was birthday and we were going to a show. Upon arriving at 5:30 the place was empty. What a beautiful place full of crystals hanging from the ceiling pretty sculptures and vases from Italy. We were excited. The waiter gave us the menu and it was kinda hard to understand him with his accent so we ordered off menu. Hubby had fish special and two appetizers. He lived the sardines. I had a pasta dish. We both had dessert and hubby had an expresso. Total was $ 313.00!!!! He had one martini. No acknowledgment it was my birthday. Ps the cookies they have on display of which I had to ask for twice were not that good. We had to call the waiter over from his socializing to get him to give us a check. We were still the only patrons and there were eight waiters standing around. I guess they get their crowd after 6:30. Well I'm sorry to say I have had better pasta and hubby and I would not go back. I think using trip advisor would have lead us to a much better place for half the price. I did some research when we got home and found a few other gems- Carmine's on 44 th st and Trattoria Trecolori on 47 th and a few others that people rated. I would go with trip advisor or yelp over Zagat.

Look for maitre Manoel Dias, a portuguese good guy, knows everything about italian food. Impeccable service, extensive wine list. Price it is in line with a first class italian restaurant.

Great location, al fresco dining (thank you to the Mack truck driver who honked his air horn driving by and gave me a heart attack), excellent (and exuberant) waiter, but super expensive for lunch with mediocre food.

My husband and I were just doing museums that day and were certainly not "dressed" for a fine dinner that night. However, at about 5:30 we stumbled across this place and were like let's just do it! With no rezzies and not looking like fine diners they seated us... After 20 mins of me asking questions about the wine and food and ordering a nice bottle and complimenting the impeccable menu ... The waiter and I were best friends.. they warmed up and we certainly did.. service and food old world style.. Albeit expensive as the kids today say YOLO!

We loved our meal at San Pietro. It happened that they were doing specials with truffles that night, so we were able to have the best, freshest truffles shaved over our pastas. It was so delicious, my mouth waters as I type! The service staff was excellent. We will definitely go back!

Went for lunch. Good ambiance, good Italian cuisine, good service. The owner was very nice and made us feel right at home. I higly recommend this place.

San Pietro restaurant, proclaimed by the Italian government, media, and culinary organization as "the best and most authentic Italian restaurant outside of Italy". This statement is absolutely correct !!! II know San Pietro from the first day it was open and after 25 years I don't recall a bad experience !!! Food is amazing, service one of the best ever. When in New York you must try this place, you will be very, very happy !!!!

really loved their truffle pasta but be ready to pay up for the truffles!

My mouth is still watering when I think about the delicious dinner we enjoyed at San Pietro. We started with a special pasta appetizer - have no idea what it was but it was amazing! Veal melted in your mouth, manicotti was fabulous. Yes it is VERY expensive but if you want to splurge on some old school Italian this would be a great place to start.

Another one that is better then il mulino , Cipriani and del posto But this one is not cheap Wine list fantastic but expensive Food and service excellent

I love this restaurant. The weather was beautiful, and the outdoor seating was fantastic. The service was impeccable. The owner was so friendly and welcoming. The food was delicious with great variety. I will definitely go again when back in NYC.

The minute me and my friend sat down we were "attacked" by an extremely loud "boss" who proceeded to recite the specials in an exaggerated italian accent. He did the same on other tables, again in a very loud, theatrical manner. When asked why he seemed to get offended, and said because "it works". The food was mediocre. The waiter tried to push "wild strawberries" for dessert at an exorbitant price. And he also dropped a glass of water on the table and simply covered it with a napkin, that got immediately wet. I rarely write reviews but I am surprised people like this place. I live in New York for over 30 years and this was one bad experience.

Welcoming, very lovely Italian staff, food delicious, service superb....small, buzzy...a treat...the lemon sole was just spot on

Have been to San Pietro on several occasions over the years as our host is a long time customer. I think the food is getting even better. Gerardo, the owner, easily went five minutes going over all the specials and then gave us the open invitation to make anything anyway you want it. Nice. They even offered gluten free pasta. The service is top notch and you will rarely see a wayward noodle or wet spot sitting on the tablecloth before someone comes by to touch it up. One thing that I always use to rate a good restaurant is the temperature of the food. Everything was perfect from soup to cappucino. Truly a landmark restaurant.

I begin by noting that "de gustibus" applies to the issue of taste, since a previous reviewer and I have a different take on the rigatoni. I thought it was pretty good, though I have indeed had better Italian food for considerably less. I have to completely agree with the other reviewer about the price of wine, however. It was an o.k. Barolo, but certainly not worth $28 a glass. I've had a $28 bottle (not restaurant price of course) that was superior. The service was slick, professional and personable; however, the wine came not from a list (there was none) but from a waiter's recommendation. Also we asked to share an antipasto special, but received not one but two orders. I might note also that the desserts--which we opted not to order anyway--were presented on a dessert menu without prices. I guess if you have to ask.... In any case, I didn't need to order a dessert given the number of biscotti that appeared after the main course (and they were actually very good).

The daily specials are expansive on top of a very large menu. Decor is lovely and wait staff helpful and attentive Elegant Italian food with amazing variety

This is a restaurant to which I keep coming back. It has the perfect location compared to th hotel where I usually stay but not only that: the staff is accommodating and helpful, and the food is fresh, tasty and in "right sized portions". It is a pleasure to just sit down, have a sip of a glass of wine and then let your waiter suggest your meal. This time I wanted the cold soup, which had crab meat in it (to which I am lethally allergic) so I asked for the soup without the crabmeat. That would be an easy fix ---but the maitre told me it would loose in taste, so could he recommend that they made a special cold soup for me of zucchini, tomato and peppers. I happily agree and get a soup artistically served with the 2 colours separated (green-red) drizzled with a little olive oil. I can't wait to go back. AND: only in NYC would I find it stylishly appropriate to have a view over (into) a garage. So good!

We went to this restaurant at the recommendation of the concierge at the hotel. We were so pleased we had gone. The food is Italian and had different and delicious dishes. The service is exceptional and you will not be disappointed in whatever you order.

The worst service restaurant, terrible, we seat at the bar and in 15 minutes no one comes, actitud very bad, waiter terrible, very disappointed restaurant. We try to have the most simple recipe, that was a cacio e Pepe, they said they can not make it, please, it’s only cheese and pepper, and pasta, in a Italian restaurant? And is in the menu, but with other ingredients. Chef was very rude. The girl at the door was the only one nice person. It’s no good place. Never go back.

We really liked the restaurant. The service was highly attentive and friendly and we were well looked after. The food was excellent quality. The only drawback was that we came away feeling we had been charged quite a lot for what we had. This is one of those restaurants that keeps your glasses filled; in this instance it was only bottled water but it was very obvious that they were filling our glasses to ‘sell’ more water. It’s a small point but it detracted slightly and we had a similar quality of Italian the following night for around 30% less.

It is an excellent restaurant. The attention of the waiters very good. Apart from the letter there were the day dishes added by this incredible maitre with a napoletano (¿?) accent. Presentation of the dishes great, quality and superb taste. The furniture is a little cluttered but ..... superb food!. We shared an appetizer "Sepia cooked with cherry tomatoes, black olives and capers" (best of the food great taste, -32 dollars-), a first with "Fetuccine home made" they had beans (!) among its ingredients (very good, -30 dollars-) and a second "Escalopine of veal with vegetables sauce topped with mozzarella cheese" (tender and delicious, -43 dollars-). We drank water and we take no dessert or coffee. Everything was 115 dollars (gratuities not included). Expensive, but an excellent experience for a special day in NY.

Staggered in here from an incredible hot and sticky day to find somewhere cool for lunch - was actually aiming for Papillon next door, but once I was inside the chill in the air was too nice to turn back. Asking for a table for one drew a rather surly expression from the lady on the door, but she soon sorted me out a nice spot in the back room, from where I could watch the tables full of well-off-looking (mostly) men enjoying their long lunches. The wine list was brought quickly and a glass of very pleasant, chilled white followed swiftly, then the menu took a while to arrive and along with it came a chap with a strong accent ready to reel out an epic list of specials. Some of them sounded awesome, but probably more appropriate for a large family with a whole evening to kill. While waiting for the food I looked around a bit at the room, thickly carpeted, heavy on the gold ornamentation with a distinctly early-80-nouveau-riche feel to the decor. It was also swarming with staff - it felt like one to every two diners, and might actually have been that many. I went for a simple starter of prosciutto and burrata, which was really quite delicious, the cheese wonderfully rich and creamy and the ham soft and stretchy and flavoursome. Oh, and before it arrived I was brought a big bowl of serious bread and a jar of skinny breadsticks, which I barely touched really. For main I went for a simple -sounding buccatini arrabiata with pig cheeks, which was less of a joy - the pasta still had much more bite in the middle than I would have liked, and the sauce was not much more special than the usual stodgy, over-sweet gloop that features in most US Italian joints. Not bad though. With that abandoned half-eaten, I resisted desserts but was still brought a cute little dish of tiny biscuits and a bowl of melon chunks and cherries on ice, which was a pretty great touch. All in all, probably not the ideal spot for my purposes at the time, but still an interesting experience and something I may even have another go at, preferably with company, and time, and enough appetite to fully appreciate things.
My favorite in the entire world
Every time we visit NYC we go there and they always have specials that creatively done and affectionately presented. The food quality is tops and the service excellent.
