Feel transported to Eyrope when I eat here

By KWS63 |

Such delicious and civilized breakfasts! They know how to make your experience luxurious and relaxing. Intimate cafe, delicious food, delicious coffee. On a gorgeous West Village corner. If I can I like to go for breakfast during the week, weekends are quite crowded, more relaxing when they are less busy. Everything is delicious!!

Nice café

We dropped in here and found ourselves back in Europe! The staff was helpful and this place was a lovely hideaway! :-) The neighbourhood was very quiet.

Pricy but delicious local Italian food

By Josiah David C |

Dino was an amazing host! The vino was supherb, the cappuccinos were on point, the seabass was unreal (and served whole and portioned table side), and the caprese was fresh and perfectly seasoned.

Village Charmer

This is a romantic wonderful restaurant that will make u feel like you are in Italy. It is a snug little restaurant in the West Village. Great food. Great wine. Great service. Go.

false reaction / "review"window dressing

By Kenneth D |

Upon receipt of the above reaction of Sant Ambroues on my review (“horrific”) apologizing and reaching out to me I promptly contacted the manager by e-mail as suggested to elaborate on my disappointing dinner experience (to the largest extent possible). However, to date Sant Ambroues never responded. Its reaction on Tripadivor to my review suggesting that they really care, is purely false and fake, nothing more than "review"window dressing and has nothing to do whatsoever to take comments of their clients seriously. It is self-evident that they will never see me again.

a rare miss

By LouisSullivan |

i have been dining at SA for years and consider it a consistent great choice, high prices are worth the quality, location and consistency. But on last visit had the halibut and burrata special and it was just terrible, poorly conceived and not cooked very well. Hope its an abberation.

warm welcome and deliciious food

By mellow25 |

Have had their coffee previously and decided to try a meal. Excellent salad and delicious mains. Wonderful service. They replaced my entree to make it garlic free even though I had forgotten to mention my allergy. Small place but quite cozy. Would loved to have been to linger.

Quiet in the Village

By rogutt |

Early on a Saturday evening it was recommended we visit this establishment from a local shoe store. Since we didn't have a reservation we sat outside as it was still nice out. The staff was friendly, the food was served in a timely manner and it was all very tasty. We throughly enjoyed. A bit on the pricey side but no different than any of the other restaurants in the area.

So Good We Ate There Twice

By Harper D |

We happened to be walking by on a Sunday morning and stopped for brunch - sat outside. The food and service was excellent - perhaps my fav breakfast ever, which is saying something. We came back the next night for dinner, and really enjoyed that--again, great food and great service. Excellent.

Incredibly loud and Unbearably expensive.

By Robert V |

This is one of those pointless New York restaurants that look good on the outside but fall short when the food arrives. The good news is the service is friendly, prompt, and helpful but the place is so loud you can't hear anything they say. The meal started out with some fresh baked bread which was magnificent. Then the mains arrived. I ordered an asparagus salad which showed off the chef's knife skills but little else. The dish came with six spears delicately sliced lengthwise and a mound of chopped egg. Both were lightly dressed in what tasted like tap water. The total cost of the ingredients was maybe two dollars and they charged twenty five. My wife got the salad which also came with the same tap water dressing. Our friend decided on the procuitto and mozzarella which consisted of procuitto and mozzarella so at least t had some recognizable flavor. The total bill came to around $100. The food was accompanied by the deafening roar of the other patrons. The extreme noise made it impossible to have a conversation without screaming at one another. This was not an atmosphere conducive to fine dinning but then neither was the food.

Good BUT Very Overpriced

By jbgshrink |

We live in the neighborhood of this pretty restaurant in the West Village and were delighted that our friend had chosen this place to take us to last night as we had not been there before. We both wanted to like it as we always seek new finds close to home. It was the last week of restaurant week so that is the menu we ordered from. I had the salmon carpaccio for an appetizer and was disappointed as the dressing on this delicate ever so thin slice of salmon was too strong and overwhelming. My friends liked their salads. For the entree, two of us ordered the butternut squash ravioli. I do know that this is never a substantial dish but this was ridiculous. Each ravioli was very small and the portion was of 5 or 6 of these tiny things. They were delicious but where was dinner ???? I will say that the bread was very special and the desserts were sublime as well. We were shocked when we looked at their regular menu as the appetizers and salads were all in the high teens. That will definitely discourage us from returning.

First rate Italian in a charming atmosphere

By rodash |

The food is outstanding here. The pastas are wonderful. Their vitello tonnato is outstanding. Their pastries are wicked. If the weather permits, an outdoor table will add to your enjoyment. The prices are high, but it's worth it, at least for an occasional splurge.

Wonderful meal, service and wine...

By CloudTenReviews |

We stumbled upon this restaurant as a recommendation of the doorman at The Surrey. What a treat! I was in New York for a week and ate at this restaurant frequently. It was delicious! Everyone agreed! The staff was helpful and I really wish I could remember my server's name but he was from italy and very knowledgeable about wines, foods, fish, pastries. It was such a special experience. Do not be fooled because the description says its a great place to grab a pastry; it is a great place to eat breakfast, lunch or dinner. On top of that, it is also a great place to grab a pastry. The fish is delicious and I would recommend it for couples, friends, solo, business or with a group for a special occasion. I loved this restaurant and highly recommend it to anyone visiting New York.

Lovely spot for a late dinner.

By Hikergourmet |

We ducked in here after seeing a play at the Lucille Lortel Theatre. The place was winding down at 10:30 but we were still able to get a great meal. I was impressed by the minestrone soup which was made the way I like it with crunchy vegetables to provide a very fresh flavour. The carpaccio was paper thin and delicious. The wine list is good and the bartender knows how to pour a generous single malt. At that time of night the atmosphere is also romantic. Even I look good in their soft lighting.

Very very tasty food

By eliane f |

Very nice and busy restaurant. The food was really tasty. I had tuna as appetizer and then tagliata di manzo. Both dishes really delicious. One of the best restaurants in NY in my opinion. Service correct but a little arrogant

First time back to our old " haunt" in several years and it did not disappoint. High energy NYC environment combined with spectacular food and fun service.

Wonderful straightforward Italian food

By John B |

This feels like a small family-owned restaurant. In fact it is part of a small chain. The food is simple but perfect. I had the best prosciutto and home-made mozzarella here - simply divine. Pasta is how your mother should have made it. Friendly service and a nice relaxed atmosphere. Perfect for this part of town

Best spaghetti bolognese ever!

By markmik |

First meal in NYC was here after 20 plus hr flight from Sydney. coolish April evening sat outside. Great service along with top quality food. Salad and both mains one spaghetti and the other fish near perfect in size and taste. Seven desserts to select from as well as good range of wines and cocktails.

Off the beaten track pleasant meal

By tomandessie |

We ate at the Sant Ambroeus West Village. It was very quiet (which, we had heard is not the case with some of their other restaurants). The food and service were very good and their octopus and crab appetizer (a special not on the menu) was outstanding.

Great pick during New York Restaurant week

By Natalie F |

I was looking for a place to meet with my cousins who I haven't seen for a while. This place proved to be "what's the doctor ordered" - small, cosy and quiet, with great Italian food we were able to share. We wanted to sit outside, but no tables were available. Instead we were given a round table inside, which was even better. The weather was hot and humid, with some rain drops, and we ended up with more space and more cool air. We chose food from the Restaurant Week menu which provided excellent choices for an excellent price. Had a great lunch without going bankrupt.

Great breakfast

By Gubsy1963 |

We went there for breakfast one Saturday morning. This clearly is a place where the locals go and this in turn I always take as a mark of quality. It was reasonably busy but service was good. The food was excellent and I would recommend the assortment of Brioche basket. Be warned, the Brioche is enough for four people. The coffee was also good. The restaurant got busy whilst we were there and therefore, if going on a weekend, I wouldn't leave it too late. You might be tempted by the cakes on display in the shop too, but we managed to avoid the temptation of these delicious looking treats.

Shocked !

By Mike M |

I am fortunate to be able to travel the country for my company and am able to eat at great places every where I go. We ate lunch(brunch) at this little place on a Saturday afternoon and it seemed to be in line with the costs of other places. The food was ok, portions small but that seems to be the norm for trendy upscale establishments. We ordered iced tea and it was served in a very small wine glass and the shock was that each time I ordered a refill of this very small amount of tea they charged $5.00 per. If you are going to charge that much maybe you should serve an initial glass at least the size of a water glass. I will never go back, $30 for ice tea is extreme and I consider this to be gouging the customer.

Coffee on Carrie Bradshaw’s street

By Kirsty B |

We were directed to this place by a local. It’s a beautiful little cafe nestled in this lovely neighbourhood. Silky coffee, coupled with friendly and welcoming service made this place a real gem of a find. The atmosphere is divine. Candle lit, relaxing music with the waft of coffee in the air. Perfect!

Average at Best

Enjoying our brunch on this busy Saturday. Very tasty food , well cooked to our individual requests. The service is very good. Highly recommended.

Ambroeus ambles along

By Stuart L |

the six of us,some regulars, enjoyed a Saturday lunch, over the holiday weekend.their is a lot of activity front of house which doubles as a tea lounge.San Ambroeus is a busy, popular well patronised restaurant, catering to the smart and elegant. the menu options are carefully considered, making it easier to chose something to eat.the usual specilas are explained separately.the place kinda ambles along. we chose insulata carciofi, tatarre Toño,rughetta, minestrone, pasta bolognaise, salmone, costoletta Milanese, lentichie and various side dishes. we drank Bloody Mary($15),vodka($16),rose ($15 glass) and the usual soft drinks and teas/coffees.the service is attentive and informative.Cheten did a good job taking care of us. the standouts were the veal, generous and soft.salmon nicely cooked with a gentle lemon flavour.the bolognaise was dissapointing.hard bits,in an uninspiring meat sauce.minestrone bland and unimaginative.the other dishes were as expected without being exceptional. the bill came to $454 including drinks.we added the usual 18% tip.it was an enjoyable hour, catching up with our Florida friends.will chose something else next time.

Risotto was perfect

By KK_M_11 |

We knew nothing of this restaurant or chain, we were simply walking down the street on a warm Friday evening and the outside table available looked like it had our name on it. Very pleased we stopped. Salads bright and fresh. Risotto was perfect, al dente, and enough cheese to have great flavour, but not too much to be over rich and oily. Molto bene. Good wines by the glass and tables on the street great for people watching.

worst risotto ever

By fodbold-er-sjov |

me and my wife each tried a different risotto at the Sant Ambroeus in the west village, and they where both overcooked and with out any taste whatsoever. when the waiter ask us if everything was allright, we said that the food was not great(should had said terrible)_, all we got back as a reply was a smile..... clearly no attention was being paid to our answer. avoid this place at all cost. the food is awful and overprice. zagat gives it a 22(but overpriced)................ that just crazy

Great Coffee!

By Barnetty |

This is a little coffee in E 62st street that's connected to the Loews Regency Hotel. It does great coffee and their pastries were the best we had during our trip to New York. There's no seating inside, just stand up bars but there is seating outside - great to sit and watch the New Yorkers go by. We had breakfast (pastries, fruit & savoury rolls) plus coffee and for it came to $50. Not the cheapest place to eat but the quality and service was excellent. They also do good lunches / snacks to take away too - plenty of locals came in while we were there (always a good a sign!). Worth a stop if you're in the area. Recommended.

Charming!

By rojogamu |

It is located in the same street of the Carrie Bradshaw apartment, so it is perfect if you are one of the SATC fans :). The restaurant itself radiates good energy, you can feel the good vibes! The service is great and the food, just wow! Delicious! Sitting in the terrace, outside, watching the street and all the people walking along is priceless! I really enjoyed the wine and the appetizers we ordered just watching the street, perfect for having a good conversation!

Good food

Came here for a family dinner in the west village and really enjoyed it. The food was extremely fresh and loved all the vegetables as we ordered several starters. Also enjoyed the wine list, and the venue.

Yummy Italian cuisine!!!!

By Valerielc1 |

A friend recommended this place to me and I went thinking....it's a maybe...... Well, let me tell you : it is a DEFINITE yessss!!!! There are other Sant Ambroeus in the city, each have different menus. When you go here you have to order either of the two risottos they have. The one with saffron was out of this world!!! We also had spaghetti (whichever you choose) and it was cooked al dente.....perfect. I really loved the size of the portions...... I hate it when you are served this humongous amounts of pasta that you wished you had shared..... And finally.....the deserts......wonderful.....the coffee too.....I will be back for sure!!

Good Italian restaurant in West Village

By robert t |

This is a very nice location for this traditional Italian restaurant. The place is cosy and very european style . The food is traditional but with some originality. I especially enjoyed one of my favorite " Pasta ailio oilio con peperoncino ", the pastas were well cooked " andante" and for once served with fresh chili and not the unsavory dried one. I know this is a very simple dish, but simple is sometime the hardest to get! You will enjoy a large choice in the menu and among the specials of the day. Good place to stop for lunch when you do your errands in the village

Rude maitre d', mediocre food, would never go back!

By Jani_577 |

I have traveled the world and eaten in hundreds of restaurants and have NEVER been asked to leave because the restaurant wanted to turn the table. This is exactly what happened this afternoon to my friends and I at Sant Ambroeus in the west village, New York City. The lunch was a reunion of friends from Barcelona, Denmark and New York. We had not seen each other for a year and were looking forward to a lovely lunch so we could talk, laugh and catch up on each other's lives. We booked a table in advance for 11:30 in the outdoor seating area. Even though we booked a table, one was not reserved for us and, as a result, we had to wait a half hour for the table. We sat down at 12:00 pm, ate a very mediocre meal, and at 1:20 pm the maitre d' asked us to please leave because they needed a table for another party. After we paid the check, we decided to express our displeasure to the maitre d'. He didn't care at all. In fact, he said I couldn't care less if you never come back. We will take him up on his suggestion and suggest that others do as well!

Great restaurant in the heart of the Village

By Jorisbtb01 |

Sant Ambroeus West at 4th is a great italian restaurant that serves the best dishes. Enough variation of pastas, fish and desserts. Real italian food.

While at St Ambroeus eat as a Milanese!

By Alberto C |

The place is exactly as you expect it, a mix of classic elegant and trendy modern. And the food belongs to the same category. I decided to be for one night purely Milanese and had my first ossobuco con risotto in the last 30 years. It was worth its $ 59 price, but you need to be hungry to eat it all. All the rest was very good, especially dessert, and quite pricey. It is not a place to go to weekly, but once in a while it is good to celebrate solid Italia cuisine here.

Quick lunch, great experience1

By ppbenji |

I went for NYC restaurant week, staff was very friendly and caring, food and drinks were very good and the place is very cozy itself, I recommend it!

So Good We Went Twice

By CLB |

We stumbled upon this little Italian restaurant in Greenwich just hours after arriving in New York. We were famished so anything would do... but the food was fantastic, and the service impeccable. Order the Pecorino and Black Pepper Pasta (i think that was it), or the Steak and Mushroom Pasta.

Nice NYC lunch

By ptb1775 |

My husband and I had a nice lunch here today--nice atmosphere, service, good food, We both had a panini--excellent. Nice wine-by-glass selection, I had the Vermintino. My husband had a Peroni. Recommmend!

Surprise!

By Dneuburger |

This small neighborhood restaurant had pretty decent food and friendly staff (with a whiff of NY attitude). Not inexpensive but they lean toward very fresh food - a plus in my book. The place is not large so make a reservation if you plan to eat there (or go early enough to be out by 7:15pm and you should be ok). They also made a very good drink!

Hot lunch spot

By AmyC723 |

My standout was the kale quinoa salad. I wish I had added chicken to it. Very different from The Smoth kale quinoa salad. Much more delicate. Absolutely outstanding. Service was very spotty. But tables are placed nicely and it's an excellent place to people watch.

Lovely restaurant!

By SharnaSakrzewski |

I really like this restaurant, it's in the gorgeous West Village. Their hot chocolate is super delicious and the service is great!

small and charming

By NewYorkCityUes |

Such wonderful but expensive food. They are famous for their Bolognese sauce and it deserves accolades. All our starters and mains were truly delicious. It can get noisy but that is part of the atmosphere. GO!

What a restaurant should be.

By Leonardo Z |

As usual never disappointed; style, class and quality. Every detail is perfect, the maitre d' make you fill at home. The only correction I will suggest is the lady that pour your wine: do not give the impression that she know what is doing. For the rest......PERFETTO.....BRAVI

Kind service poor quality pasta.

By Climber21998939103 |

Excellent atmosphere good service at times and very poor quality Italian food. Pasta bolognese was poor quality and beyond Al dente. Sauce no good. My guest was very outspoken with the poor taste of his meal. By no means is this good Italian cuisine. Maybe they should take a trip to Mamma Mia‘s on 44th and ninth Avenue and see how it’s done.

Always lovely!

By SharnaSakrzewski |

I've been to NYC a few times and each time I return to Sant Ambroeus! It's in the gorgeous West Village, right near Perry Street. The interiors are gorgeous but I love sitting outside to soak up the surroundings and get some people-watching in. Service is always attentive and the food is delicious! I highly recommend the cocktails too!

excellent

everything was excellent, the ambiance, the service, the food, the selection of wines, the dolci, etc etc

Bad Italian food and slow service.

By Olle O |

We were out shopping in Soho and wanted a quick lunch. We then happened to chose Sant Ambroeus restaurant. Not a good choice. Nice place with outdoor seating. Nice but very busy waiters, i.e. pretty slow service. The bread basket you received when you sat down contained decent bread, but the panini my wife ordered was made with small round somewhat sweetened hamburger breads. And my linguine vongole was made with black pasta, which is not OK in Italy but might be acceptable. What was really strange was that they had added a lot of fruit meat chunks from oranges to my pasta vongole. The taste of the clams and the oranges really clashed. Not nice at all. The quinoa that our daughter had was good b

Cozy for anytime of the day

By Mandy W |

We stumbled apon this cozy spot on a rainy afternoon. We already had lunch and just wanted some coffee but the delectable cakes looked so amazing we tried a few. The peach tart was the best by far and the waiter did suggest this. But really all off it was good. We actually regretted having had lunch already as the food looked good.

it used to be great, now it is terrible!

By mpc2012 |

We used to love this restaurant when we lived in the neighborhood. It was great service and great food. We had dinner there tonight and it was inedible! and a terrible experience. I do have to say we had an amazing waiter! He tried to make up for the terrible experience. But we ordered a pasta with carbonara sauce for my son and it was black with pepper. Terrible! It had so much pepper that the sauce was black. He could not eat it, I tried it, I could not eat it either. The great waiter saw this and saw we were right as it looked black from the pepper, and said he would speak with the manager but the manager was not interested. Furthermore when we were having dinner they decided to have a staff meeting where they told the waiters what to do, etc screaming at them beside our table. After a while we suggested they might consider having it elsewhere or not during dinner hours, Instead of apologizing the guy giving orders screamed back, we are almost done. Really??? When we left, the "manager" was chatting outside with some staff and I thought I would give some feedback. I said the pasta had so much pepper it was black and inedible and he asked me whether I had asked for it with less pepper. No, not really, I thought it being edible was the whole point. he was defensive, not interested in our feedback at all. It used to be a packed place, it was empty today. Sad, but I thought I would warn the people, with so many restaurants in every corner, not to waste their time and money on this place. The attitude and the food are not worth it. Tartine one block down which is where we were intending to go, is a million times better. No wonder it was still empty when we left.

Lunch

By debbie19742015 |

Had an early dinner on a Sunday afternoon. Restaurant was very busy, but service was very good. Food was outstanding. I had the Tagliatelle Saltate Alla Bolognese and my husband had the Pappardelle with wild boar. For dessert we had a croissant filled with jam that was outstanding. Fabulous Bloody Mary and great wine list. Met the chef who is very delightful and took the time to talk to us. Wonderful experience for our last day in NYC.

Excellent dinner, a bit rushed

By Christopher L |

I can be difficult to please when I'm paying good money and get rushed slightly - not by the server. The young man was extremely polite and professional, but the kitchen sent the food while I was trying to finish the incredibly good appetizers. Otherwise service was very good. We shared a salad with avocado & fresh mozzarella as well as the prosciutto and mozzarella, more like a burrata. Both were good. My adult son had the carbonara which he said was excellent. I had a filet mignon which was tasty and cooked perfectly. We shared the tiramisu which we both liked. The bartender did a good job with our cocktails. Nice outdoor smaller tables.

Great food, great service

By Vera G |

A very nice and cozy place. It is rather small, which to my mind makes it quite special. Waiters are very nice, the atmosphere is great. I had a specials lunch for $25, which included a choice of a starter, an entree and a dessert, all of which were very good and made me very full. The regular menu looked a bit pricy to me - entrees were around $40, but it's NYC, so what are you going to do? :)

Neighborhood Gem

By WalkJC60 |

This is my favourite restaurant for breakfast. It is also great for lunch; delicious salads, pastas, desserts and best of all, espresso and cappuccino. The feel and vibe is like an Italian cafe/bar in Milan. I highly recommend it, a true neighbourhood gem.

Wonderful and sophisticated lunchspot--and much easier than a flight to Milan. The service was excellent and the food as well.

Good but slow

By Epicureously |

In a nice leafy street in West Village with outdoor seating so 5* location. Italian restaurant with nice breakfast menu. I had a toasted brioche with poached eggs, proschetto and pecorino. It was very nice. Nice staff but service as slow as you like. Probably a bit harsh as it's bordering on good and I would give it another try.

What a great local to have on your corner! The food is right up there & it's a great people watching location. Don't miss out on the gelato either!

Worst Dining Experience of My Entire Life!

By alicina |

Avoid this place at all costs! Tonight I went with three girlfriends and ordered dinner from the menu of "specials" that the waiter told us verbally. I ordered a truffle risotto (other risottos on the menu were around $20). When the bill came my risotto was $95!!!! I would have never ordered this if the waiter had told me the cost! Who the heck orders food this expensive??? In discussion to the manager, the waiter lied to the manager and said he had told me the cost of the risotto when he hadn't (so the manager sided with him). To add insult to injury, in reviewing my credit card charges from home I found that they had charged me an additional 20%--they tipped themselves!--for the tip that I intentionally chose not to leave because of poor service (I was in a party of 3 so I wasn't up to the limit of party of 6 where it's policy for them to automatically add gratuity)!! In other words, after I paid & signed my credit card receipt, the waiter illegally changed the amount for which I signed and gave himself an extra $22. I am appalled that a restaurant that purports itself to be so classy and upscale and elegant would not bend over backwards to keep a customer happy. My husband and I have dined at the finest restaurants in cities worldwide and have never experienced such appalling treatment. Unless you want to risk being talked down to, cheated, lied to, and have money illegally charged to your credit card, I would avoid this terrible place at all costs!!!!

Too expensive

By Rui D |

The food and the service are good, however the portions are ridicule and very expensive. We had pasta and wine and paid 80 dollars and left hungry.

Better than its Milanese brother restaurant

By Paolo B |

I have been a week in NY with the whole family, and had breakfast at the Sant Amboeus every morning: excellent brioches, cakes and pancakes, good service, nice atmosphere. We also dined there a couple of times, and were extremely satisfied. Simple Italian cuisine of great quality.

Very Good Italian; Very Expensive

By Robert H |

We were walking through the West Village on Sunday afternoon & was looking for a lunch spot; happened upon an outdoor table at Sant Ambroeus & didn't know of it's history or sister restaurants... Started with 2 Aperol Spritz & shared an eggplant parm appetizer; delicious... Angela then walked us through the afternoon specials... I had the swordfish; was very good BUT i think if a restaurant is charging $42 on a Sunday afternoon for a piece of fish you should be informed before you order it ... Spagetti bolonesse was very good also...

Dalle Stelle alle stalle

By Silvia F |

Many years ago this used to be absolutely the best italian coffee shop/ bar in the city. How far they have fallen.. perhaps the owners resting on their laurel ..there is no reminiscence of anything italian here. The spremuta is old juice gone sour, the service is awful, and the coffee highly disappointing. The trendy location seems to have kept them popular but anyone who invited anything about italian food and coffee will absolutely despise this place.

Always the best

By Karen B |

Thank you Francesco and everyone at SA West Village for an incredible Father’s Day celebration. Every single aspect of our time with you was exceptional- our wine recommendation was perfectly paired with our dining selections (superb) and your staff is the most professional and knowledgeable. You always make us feel like family, like coming home - whether we are celebrating a special event or joining you on a regular Tuesday night.

Classic Charm and Friendly Service

By Tania A |

I stopped by Sant Ambroeus West Village for lunch while strolling through the boutiques, window shopping, and people-watching. The place was bustling, fully booked with reservations, but they kindly accommodated me since I was dining solo. This classic restaurant has been around for ages, and its reputation certainly precedes it. They seated me outside, which was lovely, allowing me to enjoy the sunny day and watch passersby. I started with the green salad, which was simple but exactly what I wanted—fresh and delicious. I have to mention that while I was very casually dressed after walking around all day, everyone else having lunch was dressed to the nines and looked wonderful. Despite my casual attire, I felt perfectly comfortable, and the staff treated me with the same warmth and attentiveness. For my main, I chose the Linguine Alle Vongole. They brought out some bread and olive oil to start, and I have to say, the bread was to die for, and the olive oil was excellent—you could tell it was high-quality Italian oil. Unfortunately, the pasta was a bit of a letdown. It was mediocre in flavor, and the presentation was odd, with the clams already removed from their shells, making the dish look less appealing. That said, the staff and waiters were amazing—so friendly and attentive. I wasn’t discouraged, though, because on another day, I ordered the Spaghetti al Pomodoro, and it was fantastic! The simplicity and quality of the ingredients made the flavors shine. I would definitely return to any of their locations and recommend them for a classic, well-rounded dining experience.

Nice Dinner on a Summer Day

By Michael J |

My wife and I were in the city and stopped in for dinner on a lazy summer day. We had an excellent meat and cheese appetizer - more than enough for 2. The arrabiata was very spicy but I like it that way - the pesto had a good amount of sauce but not too much. The bread was very good. This is a place where you can get reliable food and service.

I love Sant Ambreous for it's location in the West Village, for it's attention to fresh and delicious food, and the service and staff. While it is NOT the cheapest Italian in town, the chef team are always innovating and adding new and seasonal dishes. It is NOT the same old. It's one of the best Cacio Pepe in NYC. It's charming inside or out, and great for lunch or dinner. Plus I am allowed to bring my service pup without harassment and questions. I am there often and have lasted longer than most of the managers!

Beautiful restaurant

By Susanna G |

The restaurant is really cosy and beautiful. The service was very good. The food was also very good, but maybe not anything ”spectacular” considering the price. But overall, we enjoyed the visit!

simply wonderful

By Robert K |

The service and food at this small village outpost of this small group restaurant chain was as good as it gets. No pretension just great food. The artichoke salad was yummy and the red clam sauce outstanding, but the beef carpaccio was so heavenly I dream about it. This melt in your mouth delicacy had me yearning for more. The wine list was very good and served perfectly. I have nothing but raves for Sant Ambroeus

Fine Italian in the Village

By Anne M |

We walked around the village to find this gem. Great drinks, food and service. We ate outside and people-watched. Good value. Excellent food!

Date night

By Andrea B |

Exquisite service. Magnificent dining experience beginning to end. We were the last diners in the restaurant, caught in conversation and yet no on seemed to mind. On my top 10 list. Yes, that is freshly shaved truffle.

Great breakfast or lunch

By furman99 |

My husband and I go here for breakfast or lunch every time we are in NYC. This is a great UES restaurant. Service is good. Food is great. It can be noisy and crowded. Always busy with locals.

Cozy. Ambience. Delicious.

By almostavalentine |

My best friend and I arrived in New York to visit her daughter and this was the first restaurant we went to. It is a friendly, neighborhood Italian cafe that is unpretentious but professional. I had a simple meal of onion soup and cheese toast but it was wonderful. My friend and her daughter shared the pasta bolognese that they said was delicious. All washed down with a nice Italian vino blanco of course. Definitely recommend!

Cosy Italian in the West Village

By Georgina R |

Were invited here for dinner on Valentine's Day, first time for us but our hosts are regular visitors. Lovely, warm service from the moment we stepped in from the cold. We shared a couple of dishes as starters, the Parma ham with mozzarella and the spaghetti carbonara (as our hosts said this was not to be missed!). They were right about the carbonara, it was excellent, rich and creamy with the right amount of saltiness from the pancetta and parmigiano. Parma ham and mozzarella was just that, honest and tasty with good quality produce. Main courses were the vongole, perfectly cooked linguine with a good amount of clams. Ragu di cinghiale was rich and flavoursome, branzino was simply grilled and coteletta di Milanese a huge veal cutlet simply breaded. We shared some pastries and had coffees to finish. All in all a very nice meal. The restaurant had a very nice ambience, attentive but not fussy service and good food. It was quite pricey (as some other reviewers have mentioned) but definately not unreasonable. Situated in a lovely area, I can imagine it would be lovely to sit outside in the warmer weather.

You feel like you are in Italy

By AmyC723 |

The restaurant is teeny tiny. We have only been able to eat here at off hours bc at other times the wait is always too long. The minestrone soup was excellent as was the salad composed of hearts of palm, arugula, artichoke and fresh slivers of Parmesan cheese. This restaurant is A true gem and exactly the kind of restaurant that you would want to eat in while strolling around the west village and adjacent areas. On our recent visit we did not hear English spoken at all. All of the guests around us spoke other languages. The servers, of course, spoke English.

ONE OF MY FAV

By Secil E |

every single thing is so so delicious! My daughter is crazy about the chocolate cookie and I am fan of sandwiches, coffe.

Excellent food, and very cosy

By Emma |

Excellent food, and very cosy on Mondays and Tuesdays. Unfortunately have witnessed a lot of empty tables when I was told the restaurant was fully booked. Make sure to insist to get a table.

Fine. But not special. Needs more bang for the buck.

By dgoldyn |

I had dinner there tonight at the suggestion of my friend. The ambience was a very nice cozy neighborhood feel and a tad romantic,. While it was a pleasant enough dining experience, I didn't feel it was anything special. I had a Veal Chop Milanese pounded thin which was very good--not great-- but as people on here said, over priced. And I was still hungry after all was said and done. We split the chocolate mousse cake for desert which was really a small round chocolate tart about 2 1/2 inches in diameter. The 2 and one half inch desert was 10 bucks. Hmmm. While it wasn't a bad meal, it also wasn't a great one. If I am going to pay this amount for a meal, I think it should be excellent to exceptional. It was in a word.. okay.

I decided to visit this restaurant...

By Eroldan78 |

I decided to visit this restaurant because I saw it on 'The best thing I ever ate' on food network. Rocco dispirito raved about their pastry San Ambrois chocolate tart. I was sad because this pastry wasn't available so I got the fruit tart instead along with the cappuccino. Yum yum! I would recommend this place to anyone. Go get it!!

great ambience and food

By meg |

went here on a double date and had an excellent meal. the restaurant is lovely and really nicely done in terms of lighting and decor. very cozy and west-villagey but still elegantly done. the setting is nice for quiet conversation, but although the volume stays low, it is still a scene and completely packed. the staff was really friendly and personable, even though we were fifteen minutes late to our reservation. the menu was a little limited but everyone at the table ordered something different and really enjoyed their meals. in particular, the vegetables in the salad and along with my meal were really fresh and perfectly cooked. that sounds like a weird thing to say but seriously, these were some delicious veggies! we also had a few cocktails and they were good stiff drinks, which i always appreciate!

Cozy little restaurant with a few locations throughout Manhattan

By Monica S |

The owners of this restaurant have a chain of locations, one in the Upper East Side, a second in the West Village, and a third in Southampton. They also own Casa Lever in midtown Manhattan. The food is always excellent and the service impeccable. The restaurants are known for being quite small, however they are always crowded and you never know who you spot there; famous actors, politicians, singers, just be on a lookout.

Authentic Italian and attentive service on Madison Ave

By jhw80503 |

Very good food, attentive service, interesting crowd! We ended up here on a recommendation from a New Yorker and were happy that we tried it. I speculate that it is a typical mid to higher end upper East Side restaurant. If that is what you are looking for then this is a good bet.

Ok for now.

By Fontanaditrev |

The Saint Umbreous we went to ( 259 West 4th street 212-604-9254) was mediocre. Actually its an adorable restaurant but the food is not! Even for brunch! The presentation is absolutely beautiful however the food doesn't taste good. Even the mimosa was disappointing. Truly it has plenty of potential for improvement especially it's in a great neighborhood. Time to put more effort on the food and not the decore.

This is not a good place

By travbud1 |

I spend a lot of time researching where to eat and I thought that I had something good here. I was wrong. The quality of the food was only made worse by the level of service. With the coffee I had requested cream, which was not brought with it. No problem, that isn’t a big concern. The manager who I asked for cream, who had brought the coffee, said of course. He then proceeded to get his own breakfast and sit at the bar to eat it!! I then asked one of the other servers who also didn’t bring it. This would again be ok, but the coffee was undrinkable. It was absolutely terrible. Again, this would be fine, but for the subpar standard of the food, the eggs, the $16 side of bacon, the toast. I will say the pancakes were quite good. Overall, I would not recommend.

Lovely place. Great food.

By cather |

We went for Restaurant Week and were not disappointed. Beautiful, charming Village spot. Delicious food. The skate was wonderful, gazpacho excellent and dessert yummy. Will absolutely return.

Excellent, must go!

By Aquacarpet |

Excellent black truffle linguine special, delicious burrata, nice dim atmosphere, nice ambiance, service was great. Presentation is impressive. Our clients were very satisfied so we were very happy.

Fantastic Italian

By Nancy S |

I loved this place. The food is not fancy, very well prepared, more traditional Italian. It is a terrific neighborhood joint that is unpretentious and casual. Although, it certainly was fun to see a celebrity or two dining there! The location is super low key, the staff was outstanding. I enjoyed their wine list thoroughly. Try the linguine with clams. Absolutely delicious. Definitely recommend eating there.

Authentic 5*!

By venicethemenace |

I absolutely loved this place! Service was great and they had a vast selection of great wines to choose from. Came here for brunch and was so impressed with my meal. If I return to NYC, next time it'll be for dinner!

Lovely Sunday brunch

By buchanan1 |

Really enjoyed our Sunday brunch here. Food was good, really recommend the poached eggs on avocado roast. Lovely to be able to sit out side in the New York sun. Service was ok. Staff were fine.

Delicious pasta!

Wonderful service and delicious pasta. Cozy and lively atmosphere. The linguine cacio e pepe is a decadent treat!

Great little bit of Italy in NYC

By Monty B |

I was out shopping and stopped in for a late lunch. My server, Milan, suggested several of his favorite items, which did not disappoint. The restaurant is literally like crossing the Atlantic and stepping into a small restaurant in Italy. The atmosphere, the menu and the food are straight out of Europe. The service was top notch and it is all in the West Village. I would like to try one of their other locations on another visit to New York. Highly recommended.

Tiny little gem

By palepinkribbon |

While in New York for my annual trip with friends, I was invited to Sant Ambroeus in the West Village. My first time in that neighborhood, I found it to be quaint and lovely, like something out of a movie set. The restaurant was tiny but very charming. We started with a bottle of prosecco and a dish with tomatoes and either ricotta or mozzarella cheese, I can't recall but I do know it was absolutely delicious. I ordered the sautéed Dover sole with a light lemon butter sauce. It was tender and moist, the sauce velvety and a nice compliment. A nice Pinot noir as well as Sancerre accompanied our meals. We finished off with sorbets, and a yummy tiramisu. The service was attentive but not obtrusive. The staff was welcoming and genuine. Lots of locals and even a few celebrities. If you want to eat and live like a local, this is an excellent place to start!

Cosy winter night

By patnovak |

Had dinner at the West Village location for my daughter's birthday one chilly night. Everything was spot on. The place was comfortable and welcoming. Service was excellent. Salads and pasta dishes were amazingly fresh. The desserts were equally wonderful. One chocolate dish flavored with drambuie was delicious. I would go back and would recommend it for others to try for special occasions.

So good we Came back again the next night

By nadica |

Had a wake a few blocks away and happened upon this incredible place. The food and service was so good we came back for more the second night. Total of 8 different dishes in 2 nights and each one was a hit!!! Waitstaff was lovely and made us feel very very welcome both nights!! Even though good cost was high we all agreed we would definitely go back

Great pasta in a nice neighborhood setting

By MJMH |

Ate outside here on a warm summer evening, a perfect spot to watch the passers-by. The best things here are the homemade pastas. I had spaghetti with turbot, olives and peppers. It was delicious - fresh and full of flavor. Others in my group had tagliatelle with veal ragu, spaghetti with crab, and ravioli, and everyone was happy with their choices. It's not a cheap place: four entrees, one salad, one half portion entree for a child, plus a bottle of wine came to approx $200. Not extortionate given the location, but not everyday prices either. If the weather is good, wait for an outside table. The interior is nothing special.

Nice Offshoot

By GettinOn |

To begin with, this Sant Ambroeus is not the long-standing establishment on upper Madison Avenue, an old-fashioned tea room in the European tradition and spot for the legendary "ladies who lunch." It is on the fringe of Soho and more an offshoot of that area and it's clientele than your mother's spot. The colors are more vibrant, though calm, exciting though assuring. The furniture is softer, but not slack. The staff is younger and more energetic though impeccable and tasteful. The food is traditional salads, panini, pasta, chicken, fish and meat - but with a touch of delicious spice and herb. And the gelato (which was one of the few things I could afford in the old days) is still just as bright and satisfying. The location on 265 Lafayette Street is a wonderful oasis. And, while the prices are in keeping with the area, the servings are a bit larger - making it a comparative bargain.

Cozy and delicious

By Marija B |

One of the best Italian restaurant. The food is a traditional Italian and excellent. Servis was outstanding, and pleasant with authentic Italian host

Your staff is a disgrace.

By EcemKus |

FIRST OF ALL I WOULD LIKE TO SAY THAT I HAVE NEVER EVER WRITTEN A COMMENT. I COULD NOT STAY SILENT IN THE FACE OF THIS POOR SERVICE. I live in New York and I had brought my family who were visiting me to the West Village neighborhood. I wanted to sit in a nice and pleasant looking place and you made me regret it, I hated your waiter. You even threw away the coffee I drank and you even reacted to us sitting outside. We wanted to eat something and taste your desserts but you made us uncomfortable where we were sitting. You interfered with taking pictures. I will never bring any of my guests to you again and I will tell everyone not to go. Your staff is a disgrace.

Great Italian in the West Village!

By escape2sunnyskies |

This was a great choice picked by a friend. The waiter was very attentive and took great care of us. He made excellent suggestions for food and wine upon my request. I ordered the pasta special which was very good. My husband tells me the bolognese was also outstanding. We came early (6 pm) but I would suggest you make a reservation if possible as the restaurant was full to capacity by the time we left.

Good but way overpriced lattes and desserts

By TorontoMusicman |

We stopped here for coffee and pastries. The sitting area for the coffee and dessert is in the front with few really tightly squeezed together tables. The lattes were ok but way overpriced at $7:00 for a very small cup. The hazelnut dessert was good but way overpriced ($12) for a very small piece. The service was rushed and terrible. We ordered 2 lattes and a cappuccino. We received 2 cappuccinos and a latte instead. They did bring us the correct order eventually, but we did not enjoy the visit as two of us had to wait a while for our coffees.

Easter brunch

By AyenNYC |

Love the food though it's not really the best brunch I've had. Also love the quaint neighborhood where this restaurant is, nice for strolling around after dining. Service was okay, timeliness of food was okay. Wouldn't really rush back there.

Arrogant maitre d ever

By shayna3 |

The bartender/barrista did the restaurant proud however the manager/maitre d negated it all. Some may be able to focus on the great coffee & nibbles(was there breakfast time). I found the rudeness challenging to ignore. Was he really Italian?

Just delightful

By MagicGrits |

We had Sunday Brunch, and it could not have been more perfect. The restaurant is very warm and cozy, staff are fantastic and the food and beverages were top-notch. My 14-year-old daughter pronouced it the best meal she had while in New York. Lovely neighborhood, too.

Breakfast of Champions

By Mace H |

This was on our hit list and it didn't disappoint. Breakfast was amazing and so was the choice of deserts. Can't think of a better way to start the day!

Best bolognese in the world

By BlondeByChoice |

Loved the veal puree 'bolongese' over home made tagliatelle, but could have done without the haughty maitre d' who wanted to ignore our request for a corner table. The lovely young lady who waited on us more than made up for his lack.

Charming and Delicious

By PB |

There was a time in NY not that long ago when most of the restaurants in the west Village were like Sant Ambroeus: discrete, intimate, well run, good food, reasonably priced. Sant Ambroeus is one of the last, and it's a treat. Super charming. Excellent menu, good service. You almost don't know you're in NY and that's a compliment.

Italian Soul

By massimiliano |

New York and its thousand restaurants: every nationalities, traditional recipes, fusion, molecular, excellence and desperation. Here everything is possible and it is still possible to find a piece of authentic Italy. The decor is cosy, intimate, almost vintage. I had the feeling of being in a familiar place with a professional service. Discretion and good taste are my key words to describe this downtown institution. The food is simple, maybe robust, but I really appreciate the simplicity and absence of attitute. A fantastic place where to share good food with friends

Wonderful place for brunch

By Nicholas B |

We had a fine brunch here, had reservation but was not necessary,, service was prompt but not rushed, we had two omelets tricolori as well as a side order of sauteed kale (particularly outstanding) and several cappuccinos. The atmosphere was relaxed and the quality of the food was high--savory but did not leave us stuffed. This pace had a wider variety of items on the menu than the standard New York brunch and did not just attract the brainless eggs benedict-and-mimosa crowd. Would highly recommend it.

A Respite.

By Jeremy T |

It was the last day of restaurant week in the city. I have walked by SANT AMBROEUS many times and wanted to give it a try. I arrived about a half hour early for my reservation, but as luck would have it, the charming hostess gave us a corner table almost immediately. I started with the broccoli soup which was delicious. For my entrée I had the Sea bass, and one half of my companion's chicken, both excellent choices. For dessert the chocolate mousse, and their really good, frothy cappuccino. It was so good I counted it as an additional dessert. Our server Elsa was both extremely pleasant and attentive which made our lunch that much more enjoyable. All in all a very pleasurable time in an attractive restaurant. I shall return. I recommend making a reservation as this is quite a popular spot, deservedly so.

Mediocre service and grossly overpriced

By George C |

Food is good but the prices are outrageous for what what you get (a soup $15, a bowl of pasta $24-28, main course $40-70, a side dish of broccoli or potatoes $10). And the service i poor. We waited about 20 minutes to see the menu, water and wine were spilled on the table, waiter was clearing our table before everyone finished eating.

Average food, average service, high prices...

By Gary T |

The title sums up our Sunday night visit. The Bolgonese was at best average, perhaps because it was a thick pasta rather than spaghetti. The Eggplant got a thumbs up, Service was slow and the server struggled with English. The Kitchen was quick enough but forgot the side of Spinach which they charged $15 for when the menu said it was $10.

Brilliant Little Place

By Dave Tee |

We had lunch in here after visiting Carrie Bradshaw’s house. It’s about eight doors down in Perry Street! The staff, ambiance and food were all brilliant. No negatives or criticism whatsoever. Well worth a visit.

Old Fashioned and Not Great

By Thomas V |

This is a very old fashioned Italian restaurant and we went here for the veal tonnato. And it was not very good. Otherwise it was very expensive and the pasta dishes were mediocre. Some sketchy issues in the service and reception. Overall not worth the high price.

Definition of a good West Village restaurant!

By Unbongout |

Small, but comfortable, attentive staff and very well executed pastas and Italian standards. The portions are generous enough to share pasta and entrees. Do reserve ahead as this is a very popular restaurant. I just wish they had more medium priced ($50 and under) wines on their list. We will return, which for me is key to a good dining experience. Let me know if this helped.

Charming brunch or lunch spot in the heart of the West Village

By englishmaninmidtown |

A classic New York West Village brunch location. Traditional Italian, with attention to detail, charming service, and tasty, well-preapred and highly authentic and reliable italian food. One of my favourite brunch locations in the city, and a nice spot to people watch from when it is sunny as they have outdoor seating.

Lunch

By Robert A |

We had an enjoyable lunch here after a morning exploring the area. The food was OK and service good - not bad not exceptional. It was expensive (for what it was) but that is comparing it to London prices and not NY.

Horrific

By Kenneth D |

Being a food and restaurant lover and just arriving from Amsterdam this has been the worst dining experience during COVID—19, i.e. of the last two years. By far ! First, we shared a lukewarm and tasteless melanzana parmigiana, then we had a uninspired lentil soup and a fettuccini Bolognese, which in no other words can be described as bloody shame. And on top of that an arrogant and uninterested (Italian?) waiter. An experience to be forgotten quickly. But we’ll never come back again. Kenneth & Milla Defares

Overpriced average food in pleasant but not stunning setting

By LonNW3 |

I recently ate at the restaurant and the overwhelming feeling was one of underwhelmed. Friends had chosen as a suitable brunch place and having checked the breakfast and brunch menu's there seemed to be plenty to choose from. However when we arrived only the brunch was being served and that was a distinctly limited feel for a more breakfast-based brunch. The food itself was very so-so. The eggs benedict lacking any original features and although relatively well cooked, was not something that you would not be able to prepare yourself if capable of toasting a muffin and poaching an egg. The most frustrating thing was the service. For a restaurant that at the time we were there was only half full it was frustrating to have sparkling water poured in still (with no replacement bottle offered for the mistake) to be up-sold to a bottle of wine without confirming the price only to realise it was over $100, and when the brunch meal is very average and you are facing a bill of $200+ for two of you that leaves me with a little frustrated feeling considering how many other great places are the in City that offer better food and service for significantly more value. Everyone there must enjoy it but I will not be returning and would recommend to look elsewhere unless you really do just want to go and people watch and overpay for the privilege.

Cozy Date Night

By S D |

On the corner of Perry St. and West 4th Street, in the charming West Village, sits Sant Ambroeus, Having previously patronized the Sant Ambroeus in Soho for a delicious brunch, I was excited to experience dinner in the West Village location. We went for an early dinner on a date night before going to The Comedy Cellar which was only an 8 minute walk away. The ambience was cozy and elegant. We were greeted with pleasant and accommodating service. The food was delicious! The portions were ample sized. The Prosciutto (large portion) and Buffalo Mozzarella (on the small side) melted in my mouth. The Eggplant Parmigiana appetizer was rich with flavor. We had Salmon and Linguine with clams for the main course. Both dishes were flavorful and filling. The wine was delicious as well. We passed on dessert because we were so full, which was not easy after they brought the dessert tray out. If I had room I would have tasted at least 2 or 3. They all looked amazing! The service throughout the meal was spot on and very attentive. Although a bit pricey, it was well worth it. I can't wait to go back to try other dishes and dessert!

Good and bad

By Jeremy W |

This upmarket Italian in a pleasant part of the West Village offers mediocre overpriced food. The small dining room is cozy with white tablecloths and noise levels that are not too bad. The menu looks interesting but the food was disappointing. My cod was overcooked and dry on a bed of peeled tomatoes that tasted canned. The wine list prices are unbelievable - many wines for $500 or more. Overall not a great dining experience, overpriced and underperformed.

Excellent

By Titamacedo |

This was our first time here. We came for sunday brunch. It was absolutely delicious and we had lot of fun. The service was very charming and professional. We will go back and strongly recomend. The place is small so make a reservation.

FABULOUS!!!!

By Brian A |

5 of us were at this wonderful restaurant during Food Week NYC, and what a great find. The food, the portion sizes and the wine selection were excellent. Our server was extremely helpful and very friendly, we will definitely be going back.

Beautiful West Village Dining Experience

By Debbie R |

I happened upon Sant Ambroeus while exploring the West Village with my daughter. We were warmly greeted on a very busy Saturday Afternoon. I asked if they might have a table and was told maybe a 5 minute wait while the table was prepared. Meanwhile our coats were taken, and after two minutes max. we were shown to our table. It was perfect, in the corner with a view of the restaurant and bar. I order the eggs benidict with salmon and my daughter had pancakes with fruit. Both were prepared beautifully, the eggs were lovely and fresh. We both had coffee which was excellent. Service was attentive and at a perfect pace. Our experience here was truly special, if you are in the West Village just go, you won't be disappointed. Very nice bar area as well if you want to pop in for a drink. Carrie Bradshaw's apartment from Sex and the City is across the street a few doors down as well.

Beautiful food! Beautiful People

By darlenelynn |

We at there twice once for pastry and cappuccino and once for breakfast. It think it is kind of a neighborhood hang out. The first time I had delicious coconut gelato and my friend had flourless chocolate cake. Both of the deserts were wonderful! the. the gelato was not too sweet and the cake was rich like whipped fudge. The next day we had breakfast and I had avocado toast and my friend had pancakes with fresh berries. although were tourist we felt quite welcome.

Expensive but very good papardelle pasta

By Nina961 |

Nice experience, good quality food. Attentive service. But expect pretty high entree prices even at lunch. Good place for business conversation.

Delicious!

By Dusty S |

We had a great patio table for Sunday brunch. It was a lovely experience and the staff were very accommodating. The half orange/half grapefruit juice was a morning delight! The eggs Benedict with prosciutto were very good and I'd order them again. The entire experience was exactly what I needed to relax and unwind. It's a little pricey but overall I'd return.

Stellar Italian

By Jukka K |

Wondered in for lunch with no reservation. The restaurant was rather busy, so we waited at the bar sampling some very nice house wines (not enough to affect the judgment on food, though). After about 35 minutes we got seated and can say that it was definitely worth the wait. Between the three of us we were able to get a nice selection from the menu. Everything was top notch. Would go as far as to say one of the best Italian restaurants we have ever visited. We will certainly be back! Would highly recommend a visit if you get a chance. Veal Milanese and bolognese deserve a special mention. Not cheap, though.

Simply Great

By alibali5 |

This became one of my favorite spots in the village. Although on the pricey side, it's one of the best Italian restaurants that I've been to in the city. Unlike most "Americanized" Italian restaurants in New York, this place will serve you pasta "al dente", which is absolutely worth the price! The setting is also great, both inside and on the little terrace outside.

Brunch

By TravellingFamily1 |

We walked in on a busy Sunday and the hostess found a way to seat us immediately despite their being very busy. The restaurant is cute and the food is delicious. Our waiter was just ok though and that's why I gave it 3 stars. He didn't speak loudly enough, didn't seem very attentive and in fact seemed somewhat rushed. Would definitely go back and try it again.

YUM!

By fromAtl |

We stumbled upon this neighborhood gem on a Sunday, our first day in NYC, and this was one of our favorites. The olive oil is SO good! I wish I had bought a bottle to take back home. We enjoyed a bread basket with oil for dipping (YUM!) and two Panini. This is a place for the locals, and we were so lucky to have found it. Next time we travel to NY, we will visit Sant Ambroeus purposefully!

Nice Food but Small portions, very expensive

By andrew b |

We had lunch in the Sant Ambroeus in Madison Avenue. We ordered 2 Foccacia with ham, cheese and mozzarella. What arrived looked like 2 bun shaped croissants. The food was fresh tasting and really nice. We ordered Pinot Grigio which was $16 a glass. Someone 2 tables down was complaining about his food portion which was not taken too kindly b the Management. This was most expensive, pretentious and mean restaurant we encountered in NYC. We paid the bill and went to the nearest delicatessen to get some lunch as we were both hungry and not prepared to pay another $50 dollars for more food. Improved portions would lead to satisfied customers as the food was good quality.

Best on the West village

By pennahouse69 |

I've been to Sant' ambroeus after discovery the beauty of the west village, it is a small classic Italian restaurant with original food and service. the manager Fernando is there waiting to host you and to suggest a typical veal milanese, the best i've ever tried. Don't miss the gianduia cake! and if go during Christmas don't miss the famous Panettone cake.

Good but don't get the risotto

By courtney g |

Really great Italian food but get the pasta not the risotto. Sit outside nice atmosphere. Bread is also good. Overall a good experience.

Must be the best Italian in NYC

By magnus lindbergh |

Wow, my gosh - it was a while since I was here and now I can say that I am rather upset I don't go here more often!!! It's tiny, it's charming although a bit claustrophobic before you get seated but staff is accommodating and super nice! The food is just incredible, from the breadbasket and olive oil before too the Vitello Tonnato, Sardines & Charciofi Salad to one of the best Carbonara's I ever had before!!! The desert with added Hazelnut icecream made me almost cry! You just have to go here, it's worth every penny - it's not cheap but again, they put the love in the art of making the food and service is on point!!!

Cute, but lacking

By faceofweed |

Atmosphere is what you pay for here, but I'm unconvinced. The food is very generic and well over priced.

Best cappuccino outside of Italy!

By ctny |

We love to come here for breakfast and for dinner but the sidewalk cafe is also lovely for a midday glass of wine and a snack. The cappuccino is definitely the best you can find outside Italy. Sant Ambroeus is our go to restaurant for pasta which is cooked perfectly al dente every time. The staff is lovely too.

Great food & atmosphere

Had a wonderful brunch here. food and coffee were great. Sat outside and it was wonderful. Would highly recommend.

Disgusting Policy Against Solo Diners - Very Disappointing and Discriminatory

By Steven L |

I stopped by for dinner. I was told they have a policy in which they don’t give tables to singles, despite many empty tables outside and inside. I proceeded to watch many empty tables sit empty for 30 mins. What kind of disgusting and outdated policy is this?

A Hit on All 3!

By Lisa K |

This was a great little place! It "Hit" on the top 3, Food, Service and Atmosphere! I had seen this place on the show Best Thing I Ever Ate and since I was in NYC, I just had to find out for myself! The episode was on "Sweets" and OMG their signature chocolate mousse cake was Delicious! Before I indulge in dessert, I did have the prosciutto and mozzarella...soooo good! And I enjoyed one of their signature cocktails, the North Star! Next time that I'm back in NYC, I'm heading straight to this place! A wonderful experience!
