Must do in NYC

By sosoler |

A must visit NY experience, couldn’t face the madness of Kats so came here. Half a corned beef sandwich and matzo ball soup and I’m a very happy customer, end with the strawberry cheesecake and I’m even happier

Worth it!

By Lee C |

Decided to try Sarge's Deli after seeing it recommended on Here Be Barr. Had a 15 minute wait to be seated as it was busy, always a good sign to me. Once seated we were brought slaw and pickles for free, slaw was sooo nice. We ordered a no.3 corned beef & pastrami on rye with a side of fries. My wife wasn't too keen on the meat so made a sandwich from the fries, I on the other hand ate my half of the sandwich and the meat my wife left, it was delicious and so filling! The only downside for me was the waitress who served us made it seem an inconvenience to her that she had to serve us otherwise we enjoyed our experience and will be back when we're back in New York.

Outstanding

By Scotty T |

We travelled from the UK and had heard about other Delis that were well known to tourists but this one was the one the locals loved and raved about, we weren't disappointed. We had the famous Pastrami and corned beef on Rye which was unbelievable, it looked crazy but was absolutely delicious, sweet potato fries were gorgeous too and the mustard on the tables was next level. Staff were great and very friendly. When we're back in NY we will definitely be coming back👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼

Good comfort food

By dustythoughts |

This delicatessen is great! We ordered a bunch of food here when we were home sick after hearing great things about their soups, and everything was delicious. They have a very large menu, most of which is really good comfort food: chicken noodle soup, pastrami sandwiches, knishes, blintzes, etc. Portions are pretty good. The sandwiches are really stuffed with meats and other toppings, the soups are flavorful, and the knishes and blintzes were homemade and fresh. We came back here to eat in person after we got better, and the food was equally good in person. The deli has an old-world charm to it and is very cozy and comfortable.

Real New York Diner

By KZinNYC |

Whenever I see tourists lined up to go to that fake diner in Times Square I think, oh, no, go to Sarge's. It's not that far! You'll get a ton of delicious deli food in a bustling environment. Perfect New York pickles and coleslaw on every table are a sign of a great place. I was dining solo today and still got fast, friendly service. Believe me, that is not the case everywhere. Yes, Sarge's is pretty expensive ($21 for a corned beef sandwich), but it's worth getting off the beaten track a bit and getting your money's worth for the real thing.

Not worth the detour at all

By Mario B |

Disappointing, I was expecting as their motto says “the best kept secret in New York” experience but that was not the case. Aside from the staff who is entirely rude and they all look like you are disturbing them, the food was very average. Pastrami sandwich was about half the size you would get at Katz and dry. Not worth the detour in my opinion. I still can’t figure out why owners don’t send spy customers to evaluate their staff, from the lady at the cash who was as rude as can be to everyone else in the restaurant, they ALL looked like they would rather be anywhere else. So hard to get good genuine service nowadays!

Terrible 😣 save your money

By Debra S |

What a terrible disappointment! 80$ later and I’m going to have to get lunch somewhere else. My husband had the Pastrami sandwich on a very white kinda rye bread and found it dry and without flavor. I had the supposedly cheese Blintze and side potato pancake. The potato pancake was not anything like a homemade potato pancake from a Real NY Jewish Deli. It wasn’t grated potatoes but blended up like baby food and fried deep like hockey puck. The Blintze was filled with cinnamon flavored fake whipped cream with a hint of cream cheese? I’m a NY Jew who even worked at several REAL Jewish Delis in NYC back in the 70’s and they would have NEVER tried to pass off this food as anything close to anything authentic Deli Food. Beware of this place. Save your money and go to Katz’s !

Great local deli restaurant in Midtown Manhattan!

By Monica T |

First timer. Enjoyed the roast beef sandwich and the best rice pudding I ever had. Ordered takeout too of the pastrami, tongue and white fish.

This place smelled.

By Diane Anderson |

The good reviews on Yelp sent us in the wrong direction! We don’t mind trying a dive for good food. The waitress was super friendly and gave excellent service. Beyond that it was a huge disappointment. The coffee was weak. The decor is tired and in dire need of help. The spinach feta omelet was okay. The home fries were downright scary. They were red and seemed partially old. Sort of like there was a big pot that never got cleaned and they added a few potatoes everyday. The toast was meh. We don’t know what the smell was but it lingered with us afterwards.

Great Lunch Spot

By DREAMEN.FOOL |

Stopped in for lunch while seeing the sights. Service was slow but friendly. Portions are huge so consider sharing or plan on taking half with you. Coleslaw was one of the best I've ever had. Will visit again next time in NY.

NYC Deli

By BASTripper |

If you need a deli hit you will find it at Sarge's. Jewish delis in NYC are far and few between. If you are craving a delicious corn beef sandwich and a bowl of matzoh ball soup. This is the place. All the ingredients are there. Yum! My only suggestion is that you might take the food to go if you can't wait in the line.

New York Pastrami

By CR1325 |

We checked out Sarges Deli while staying in Manhattan. It was what you would expects from a NY Deli. I had the Pastrami and Corn Beef on Rye and it was huge. Typical of NY Deli's. We enjoyed our meal and would recommend if your in the area.

Go for enormous portions rather than quality

By Barbara K |

We were a group of 6 so we got to try a number of things on the menu. Portions were huge, you definitely will not leave hungry. The square knish was flat and overcooked, the meat on the sandwich so dry that you had to drench with dressing or mustard. The cheese blintzes had barely any filling but lots of too thick crepe. Specials and hot dogs were probably the best thing we had, boiled is definitely the right choice. The stuffed cabbage was terrible, huge with lots of meat but very little flavor, cabbage also seemed flavorless. If you go, get the hot dog and sauerkraut but leave the rest behind.

Pricey and not the best

By drrusl |

Ugh. Dirty, expensive, and totally without charm. I can take one or two of the above, especially if the food is great, but it is not. Sandwiches were small for the price and the gigantic corned beef and eggs (3) served with hash browns tasted and smelled like a cast iron skillet that had a bit of rust in it. Lots of food but greasy and gristly. Condiments on the tables need wiping. Service is just north of rude. And the hours are also odd. Many breakfast items (as well as a huge menu of sandwiches, entrees, and desserts) but they don't open until 10:00, for some odd reason. Keep walking and find a different (better) place to have breakfast!

Great Pastrami on Rye

By Michael H |

Stopped by here one morning on the way to a ballgame and picked up a Pastrami on rye. The butcher offered my friend who didn't like pastrami a slice and suddenly he was ordering a sandwich. Also had breakfast here one morning. While the omlette was just okay, it was huge. I recommend splitting the sandwich and the breakfast with a friend.

Old school, non-touristy NY Deli

By mklein818 |

This is an old-school, nothing fancy (or schmantzy) NY Deli. Most of the celebrities on the wall are from days of yore, but the menu offers up-to-date alternatives for civilians who aren't up for the excellent signature pastrami sandwich. Good service, very few tourists, substantial portions.

Try it!

By Teakwo23 |

One the best pastrami sandwiches ever! Skip Datz and come here! Pickle tray given before your meal. Matzo soul was delicious.

Always a great time here with family

By Ghiatrain |

Love coming here when we visit my dad in Manhattan with my son. 3 generations enjoying the Pastrami, Turkey, and Matzah Ball Soup. Portions are perfect, not too big and not too small. Service is fast and they are not as crowded as some of the tourist destination deli.

We love the food here but

By Allsugaredup |

We love the food here but there were a couple of staff members not wearing masks. They weren’t the ones making our food or I would’ve abandoned my order. We had a really large order and it’s all good so far but we will not be back until after coronavirus if the staff can’t abide by a simple rule of wearing a mask.

Service With a F--- Y--

By Mitre100 |

The good: the food is really good, both the Jewish deli half & the NY diner half. Bad: I've never had more consistently surly service. Jeez!

Loved this place so much

By CMQ17 |

We were in New York for a week staying on park avenue and came across this restaurant on day 2 ! We were greeted by the most charming loviest server we’ve met in years, called karen .. we enjoyed it so much we popped back most days for breakfast or for the odd lunch or coffee & cake Everything we ate here was beautiful.. proper home made food full of flavour.. karen was always so chatty and in such great form she was a tonic to meet .. we’ll definitely be back later in the year

Pastrami? Yes, Sergeant!

By renzo g |

This is NYC, my favorite place that had been operating for over a century no longer exists. I start to investigate online and we go to Sarge’S. The style is that of the typical no-frills American Diner with the inevitable black and white photos of famous actors hanging on the walls. We immediately feel comfortable. The menu reflects exactly what you would expect here and the prices aligned with the average New York Diner. The pastrami sandwich arrives well served with the inevitable pickled cucumbers (in 2 versions ) and Coleslaw , The portion is generous and is delicious! Bravo Serge’s indeed.. Rest Sergeant, you did a great job!

Where do I start....Fawlty Towers on heat

By Leah S |

We are visiting from the Australia and the service was so incredibly abysmal that we thought we were being pranked (imagine fawlty towers on heat!) Terrible service. Staff were rude, unprofessional, chewing gum, taking personal calls whilst delivering food, eating pizza slices whilst walking through the restaurant and some were without uniform simply wearing a hoodied puffer jacket and cap with the hood up. The entry to the kitchen was beside our table. Unfortunately this meant our entire meal was to the soundtrack of plates being thrown (not placed) into a bucket creating very loud crashes akin to a greek plate smashing party. When asked whether the onion soup came with bread, a swift NO and when we asked for a bread accompaniment, the waitress asked if we wanted toast. She subsequently delivered 2 plain unbuttered dry slices of wholemeal toasting bread. On requesting a straw for our drink to avoid touching the dirty glass, one was dug out from her apron pocket and strewn across the table. On payment by card, it was demanded that we go with her to the till. At this point, no choice of tip was given simply a statement of "will you be paying 15, 18 or 20%?" We did not feel comfortable expressing our disappointment and felt coerced into providing a tip. This was without a doubt one of the worst eating experiences of our lives and even now, we were still looking for the filming cameras because we thought this was some sort of joke....like when you pay to visit a restaurant where the staff and service are deliberately appalling....

Definitely would go back

By Lorie P |

Food and service much better than Katz- only complaint is tables are very close to each other and a bit dark - Lightening could be better Love the Pickles and cole slaw

Excellent Deli

By Ewan S |

This is an excellent deli with good hot food. We had pastrami sandwiches for mains and it was excellent. The atmosphere and decoration was great and the service was fine.

Great place to eat in NYC

By MCP |

This was an awesome NYC eating experience! Service wonderful, clean and staff helpful. Take your appetite, share with someone or be prepared to have leftovers for another meal. Sandwiches are huge, meat freshly sliced and the French fries are enough for multiple people. Don't forget the cheesecake! They make these in house and we ate some there and took the rest to go for a treat after a day of sight seeing or being at a Broadway show, it was that big and so very YUMMY!

Atmosphere: typically NY Deli setting. Service: good. Food: good. Cleanliness: bad.

By MCK |

I haven’t been back here in about 5 years. My friend and I miss good NYC deli, now living in Phoenix. We arrived about 11:30 a.m. on a Sunday. Got a seat right away. Service was very good. Food was OK. We got the Belly Lox and Sable Bagel Platter. They didn’t seem to miss a beat on portions for the Sable but the Belly Lox was thin not like 5 years ago. The bagel though toasted was a bit tough. My concern is, I question the cleanliness. We sat next to the service area as I observed all the action going on. Shocking as I observed the bus man that was servicing the restaurant with bare hands, would clear all dirty dishes sticking his hands in dirty cups to gather them, taking the dirty dish carrier to the kitchen then coming back out with clean dishes and again sticking his hands in the clean cups and plates, removing dirty dishes again then filling the pickle bowls with his bare dirty hands, dishing out coleslaw, serving coffee, pouring milk from the container with his dirty hands. Setting new place setting with dirty hands that he removed settings. Just a very unnerving site. Sorry, if I didn’t see the change of events happening in front of my eyes, I would have been better off. Atmosphere: typically NY Deli setting. Service: good. Food: good. Cleanliness: bad.

Great food! Questionable fees

By Tami L |

The food was amazing. But we had some odd charges... $2 for "open food"???? And a service fee. The prices of the food were not out of line with other NYC dining experiences - but the extra fees were just weird. Service was fine. We felt welcomed.

Solid NY deli food/experience

By Korte Y |

What I'd expect from a solid NYC deli. Lean pastrami piled high, busy, good atmosphere and seating. It feels like a place from a time gone by. It's not cheap, but it is high quality food and pricing is in line with the area. We did take out.and when I saw the place I immediately wished we had time to stay.and est there.

Delicious

By MoominWorld |

We went to Sarge's whilst on our first trip to NYC and I loved everything about it. The menu is massive. I wanted everything available and if there is a negative at all, it is that I couldn't choose what to have. I wasn't feeling 100% on the day we visited and I ordered the soup and sandwich combo. Chicken soup, of course, and I just felt instantly better. It's the ultimate comfort food. The portions are huge and the food is delicious. We ate in a few places whilst in NYC but this was my favourite. Service was great and our waitress was friendly.

Shame on the service

By Vincenzo D |

The worst experience ever with a restaurant! I placed the order for Thanksgiving dinner for 4 people the day before through UberEats and the order was accepted! An hour before the order was supposed to be delivered, they canceled the order. We gently called to check and a super nasty woman just replied they cancelled all the online orders for the day and they were not accepting orders. We tried to order to pickup and she said she could not take our order either. We were regular customers, but I will never go back!

Excellent New York Breakfast

By Chris |

we came here in Feb 2020 around 6 am for breakfast, the diner was quiet so we were seated and served promptly. the waitress was lovely and polite she served us some cowwffeee whilst we waited for our food. we ordered pancakes syrup with bacon and an omelette. food was quick and delicious we paid around $45 with a decent tip around 20% would highly recommend if you want try proper new york diner

Good Old Fashioned NY Style Deli

By maxwell1323 |

They are open lat which was great for us. Has the kreplach soup which was very good and a corned beef sandwich which was lean and tasty. The waitress was tired and needed to go home. I guess that was part of the 'charm'.

Parker says "Genuine, authentic, not at all touristy, with great food."

By Parker Sturbridge |

In the heart of Midtown, but not the touristy area, this is a great little deli/diner. Takeout in the front, with a glass case full of eats on the right and desserts on the left. But go sit in the back and relax with some table service. Complimentary slaw and pickle bowl arrive soon after you sit down. The menu is massive, so take your time. Classic sandwiches are piled high....I got the pastrami on rye. My cousin got the burger special that also had pastrami on it. Chicken sandwiches looked good too. They're big but not obscenely big (well there is one item called The Monster) and absoluteluy delicious. Breakfast, lunch or dinner....this place will satisfy. And it is open 24/7 so go any time.

Great NY deli!

By CTRocks |

Had a fantastic lunch at Sarge’s! Portions are huge! Coleslaw is delicious, corned beef is perfection! Non touristy spot with loads of locals. Would return again and again.

Very nice pastrami and deli

By orbitmic |

There are few remaining "true" pastrami places in NYC, but strangely enough, amongst those which feel reasonably authentic, two 2nd ave Deli and Sarge's are within 2 minutes walk of each other! I could compare them head to head. Both offer excellent food, a great atmosphere and an authentic deli experience. Sarge's pastrami and coleslaw were very good, though I found the 2nd ave one a little better. By contrast, I found Sarge's pickles better and their cucumber salad excellent (I can't compare as the 2nd ave Deli guys forgot mine!) I also found service a lot nicer/friendlier at Sarge's and prices are a hint less high though they have also gone up a lot in recent years. I got my meal as take away and enjoyed it thoroughly and I can't wait to be back!

Simply the BEST!

By Niecie718 |

What is there to say? It’s very simple. If you want the best pastrami, brisket, or corned beef you’ve EVER had, this is the place. They also have the best coleslaw. DO NOT PASS, GO!!!

Best deli in NYC

By Saufboy |

After reading the reviews on here we not only stopped past for a sandwich but went back New Year’s Eve for a evening meal, the food was fantastic both times and actually got served by the same lovely lady both times. The food was huge and some of the best we had all week, the place wasn’t overly busy which was nice, we even took cheese cake away both times to have later on as they looked amazing and tasted just the same. We tried a few deli’s and this one was the best of the lot.

Bad experience

By Conspicuo123 |

The worst experience referred to service and food. An old lady attended us with rude manners all the way and served us a distasteful food. There's nothing good to say about this place, just a recommendation: don't come!

Rude Service Good Eats

By Rita T |

I went there with 4 friends after an evening in Times Square. The lady taking our order was exceptionally rude and looked as dirty as could be. She listed us as a table of 6 which automatically added gratuity to our checks. We asked for separate checks and she advised that it was not possible. The manager came to the table and apologized, removed the gratuity and divided the checks. She was VERY nice. It took our food a while to come out but at least our burgers were tasty. (Cheeseburger, Bacon Burger, Turkey Burger)

Tasty eats in the city!

By Rebecca K |

The husband and I found Sarge's on our last trip to the city. First of all, the menu is MASSIVE. This is the place to go when no one can agree on what to eat -- there is literally something for everyone! The portions are quite generous too. Food is fresh and delicious -- I added a scoop of tuna salad to my spinach salad and it was fabulous! My husband got eggs with ham and potatoes -- the ham was quite delicious, it definitely didn't taste like your average processed deli ham. Service is fast and friendly -- even if there's a crowd, they move folks in pretty quickly. Will be back on our next trip to the city -- and definitely getting some of that tuna salad shipped to our home in NC!

Well worth a visit

By Sally A |

Having seen this recommended by YouTuber Jon Barr we went to see for ourselves. And it did not disappoint. Great food! It was very busy but the service was great. We had the chicken broth with Matzoh balls and a traditional pastrami on rye to share. It was lush! Must visit if you get chance

Still one of the few kosher delis in manhattsn

By Allan S |

They have the best corned beef hash around. Lots of corned beef well done and mixed with well done potatoes covered with soft scrambled or poached eggs, the best. Good service. And friendly attitude. First trip in a while but got a birthday credit of $15 . Their meats are good but soy is a bit salty. Great place to go

Fabulous food, service needs work

By Clare |

Visited after reading reviews. Long wait for our meal and drinks waitress didn’t seem to be too interested. However food made up for the service. We had 5 drinks, fries, roast beef brisket sandwich and turkey club which came to $100 little on the expensive side. Thankfully we were prepared for the cost. Just glad we shared.

A must visit, great food, great service

By Alvision |

This is a gem in new york that certainly lives up to the hype. It's a proper old school american diner with a great atmosphere. The sandwiches are next level, I went for a custom sandwich with pastrami and turkey it was heaven. This will definately be on my list when I return to new york.

Good food, large portions

By Fireweed25 |

The restaurant had a diner atmosphere and was very busy on a Sunday morning at 11:30 am though we did not have to wait long to be seated. Staff was friendly, service was fast, portions were huge and food hit the spot as our first meal of the day. We had the half pastrami sandwich and matzo ball soup with rice and the chicken loco (chicken cutlet and pastrami sandwich). We also enjoyed the included pickles and coleslaw and real potato cut fries. There was so much food we could not finish our meals. Good place for big eaters.

Old school awesomeness…

By Tony J B |

Pastrami and corned beef combo is off the chain delicious. Wow! What a great sandwich. The carver cuts pastrami for me to try while he made my sandwich. Pickles are great too. A must do when in Murray Hill. Helpful? Let me know and enjoy Sarge’s Deli.

Pastrami Heaven !!

By Chris W |

OK so it cost me and my Wife like 65 dollars for 2 sandwiches and 2 Heineken's, but this is Manhattan and this place is a must visit in my eyes. We didn't get chance to go back before the end of our week and I regret it so much. The Pastrami was to die for and the brisket was really good also. The staff we're great and we went at around 6.30 pm and there were plenty of places to sit. Not overcrowded at all. Next time i'm in NYC I will definitely return here and go straight for the Pastrami on rye.

This is the place.

By man4pnw |

I don't care what anyone says, Sarge's has the very best Corned Beef/Pastrami on Rye in all of Manhattan. They cure and cook their meat, sliced thin and piled high with Russian dressing and Cole slaw. Wow was it juicy and delicious. Expect to be stuffed when you finish. Good service from a nice staff. I wish I were back in NYC. I'd be there eating now.

Good veggie options

By Emma Williams |

There is an older lady working here with long hair, she’s not happy in her job! She walks around looking angry that you’ve dared to even think about eating here. She was so annoyed with my husband for not moving out of her way at lightening speed when she wanted to get past us as we queued. Her mood didn’t improve. However, will score this restaurant based on the food and the vegetarian choice. I had the plant based sandwich. Husband had brisket. He said it was very good. Mine was nice too. The mustard is amazing! Didn’t love the pickles. Short queue Food took ages to come out but that’s usually the case with vegetarian and plant based food anyway. It feels like the tipping culture in America has allowed customer service to slip in some places. Because tips are expected to subsidise low wages, tourists think it’s some kind of ‘American law’ and no matter what the service, feel they have to tip anyway. We did tip here but tipped the minimum amount as we had some good service from one of the other staff. We were not prepared to tip extra for such an unwelcoming environment.

Not happy

By Sire M |

Well interesting visit, 30 min for food, delivered wrong, the server was great, but the chef must be f##kin deaf, got the order wrong AGAIN, but to hungry to complain after 45 min waiting, and they charged me $4 dollars for a tea bag, then told me coffee is cheaper, " Tea is for kings, coffee is for peasants"

Excellent

By Andrew G |

Used whilst on holiday in NYC in autumn 2022. Quite simply superb. Great food. Excellent service. Good atmosphere. Very clean toilets. Well worth visiting this diner.

Excellent dinner and I got to eat it at the outside eating area

By Justin W |

I was starved when I got to Sarges for dinner that night and the meal was well worth the wait. Since there is no inside dining, I ate outside in their make-shift dining room. That was nice because it was a beautiful day to eat outside and it was a very civil way to eat. I had the half a sandwich and soup entree. I got the Pastrami sandwich on rye which came with two pickles and the Matzo Ball soup which came with a side of bread and a Gus's Cherry soda. I was impressed. At first I did not think this was enough food but after eating it was just enough. The Pastrami was piled high and was tender and well spiced. I added the spicy mustard they gave me and just pieces at a time and then ate the sandwich. The Matzo Ball soup was delicious but could have had pieces of chicken or vegetables in it. The broth was full of flavor though and was perfect on the cool night. Eating outside was fun on a beautiful night and it was nice there was a civil place to sit. It was nice to just sit back and watch the City come to life on a Saturday evening. The counter service was friendly and quick and I had a nice meal.

Unbelievable

By MimiVirginiaBeach |

Best deli I've ever visited. Melt in your mouth Pastrami. Huge portions. Cheesecake yummy and slice enough for 3 people.

My go to deli in Manhattan

By Bob J |

We learned about Sarge’s from a friend in Murray Hill a few years ago. What a find! Traditional NY deli atmosphere and huge menu. Delicious sandwiches and desserts, large and shareable. It’s a healthy walk from the Broadway hotels and midtown shopping, but well worth it. Save the dieting for another day.

Sagre's-Kosher Style Deli

By Imageandart-Image |

It's a nice diner type restaurant with chairs, tables, booths and large TVs. A small dish of coleslaw and pickles was placed on the table after you were seated. The menu is extensive. There's a lunch special for $20 which consists of a cup of soup, an entree (which has something for everyone) with fries or potato salad on some of the options and a beverage with free refills. The food was tasty and the service was very good. I was there on a weekday around 2:30 PM and was able to get seated immediately.

Best Breakfast

By Helen F |

Our go-to breakfast place in Murray Hill. Be sure to get the pickles and coleslaw for the table. Whitefish and lox are sublime. Omelets are huge.

Great Experience!

By Giulio L |

Awesome burger with pastrami, great fries, delicious cheesecake, classic diner atmosphere: amazing experience for travelers to have a taste of the great apple. A little expensive, but totally worth it, considering the taste and the serving sizes!

A show!!!

By Vicente Y |

A show!!! You can't miss it if you are in NY, the treatment, the place.... and the unbeatable pastrami sandwich!!!!! We will return, for sure.

An English man in New York

By RDymott |

Went to Sarges Deli for lunch, we are from Portsmouth, England and I always want to try a traditional NY deli. It did not disappoint, food amazing staff really friendly and well worth the money. Thank you so much

Don’t go unless you are REALLY hungry!

By David S |

There is only one size portion here: huge! We needed a true NY deli with half done pickles and lean corned beef. We got everything we needed here! As I type this I need to loosen my belt. The corned beef is perfect. The wait was hit even that bad for a Friday lunch hour. Go. Enjoy!

Fab food, prompt service. Full nyc culture!

By Claire B |

Visited as part of a family holiday to nyc..service was busy but prompt and aware. Gherkins and slaw to start then meals were good sized portions. Atmosphere felt like nyc culture..busy...loud but authentic!

Authentic and Delicious!

By BrentlyNeel |

My latest NY trip was full of bucket list stops and this was near the top of my list. Loved the whole experience. Authentic, old school and delicious. Lots of deli options out there but I can’t imagine beating Sarge’s. Pastrami to die for. Big portions and quick service (once you get a seat). Will be back.

Beware!

By jet698 |

Myself and a friend were in Murray Hill for the day. Walked around quite a bit so we did work up an appetite. We stumbled upon Sarge’s Deli & decided to grab a quick bite. Seated immediately by a sweet blonde waitress, who gave us massive menus. It took us a while to order because we just couldn’t decide. Out of the corner of my eye I saw something 🐀🐭scurry across the back of the dining room, few moments later, there it was again! The place was empty but for 2 single tables in front part of Deli. Thank goodness we didn’t order food yet. Grabbed our belongings and left that place quickly.

Average food at best. Nice, old NY, circa 1964 atmosphere.

By William M |

Very average food. Corn beef was pretty flavorless and dry. The matzo ball soup is made in the style with the broth not degreased so it’s quite heavy.. Egg creams are good. Service is definitely strange but efficient enough. I would not go back, but it does have its charm, which is authentic, 1964 New York and it’s really not a bad place. It is just that the food is average.

Excellent food and service

By Chris |

I have been wanting to visit this place for years and finally got the chance, and I was not disappointed. We were shown to a table and given some proper New York hospitality by a very nice waitress. She brought us pickles and slaw. I had the pastrami and corn beef sandwich. The food was amazing, staff were brilliant.

Best dang sandwiches

By BaldAndHappy |

There aren’t many places that you want to go and chomp down on a giant pile of meat. This is certainly one of them. An all-time classic, Sarges gives you the best dang corn beef sandwich you’ll find. I got the number three, which was pastrami and corned beef. Hot, flavorful and full of history in every bite. The bread they use is absolutely perfect. Don’t miss this place if you are in New York.

The way a Jewish deli should be

By Kitty272727 |

The separated and plexiglassed booths and tables make Sarge’s less noisy and cramped, while keeping the deli atmosphere. The no-nonsense, brusque service added to the deli feel, but I sensed they were happy to see us. The pastrami is truly excellent, macnine-sliced and very thin but as good as hand sliced, with enough fat and a good rub. Corned beef was also very good, but as is normal, a bit dry and lean (some people prefer it that way). The menu is huge, but it’s hard to skip the pastrami.

Matzo Ball Soup is Amazing

By Ryan Jett |

This place has a huge menu and everything we had on it was fantastic. I had the pastrami and a bowl of matzo ball soup, and my girlfriend had the bagels and lox. Everything was great, but the soup was far and away the best I've ever had. It was great on a cold October afternoon. The prices are very reasonable for the portions.

Amazing cheesecake

By Mmefroggy |

The only reason I did not five 5 start is because the service was not all that great. One of the guys who works there was in the way of the fridge, making it difficult to see but did not move even though he could see we struggled to see what the cheesecakes were. The 4 stars is for the cheesecakes which is absolutely fantastic! We had blueberry and pineapple. Both out of this world.

Amazing breakfast, overpriced sandwich to go

By DLindsey1 |

We had an amazing breakfast with the best lox and bagel I have had in the city since they closed the Stage Deli on Ave of the Americas. My husband had a stuffed French toast with cream cheese and strawberry preserves with a side of scrambled eggs. He couldn't finish it because it was very rich, but he loved it. We ordered a pastrami on rye which was way overpriced for what we ended up with. We were supposed to have cole slaw with it, and I guess we didn't check well enough before leaving to make sure it was there. It wasn't. It was $27 for that sandwich. I think we may have been overcharged, so watch out and look at your checks carefully before paying. It's why it gets 4 stars instead of 5.

Highly recommended

Typical and not so touristy dining with very rich food and very abundant dishes. Very good atmosphere. Something more expensive than other diners in town.

A mystery

By alanscottus2017 |

Probably the worst coffee I have ever had in my 50 years on earth. The omelette was tasteless and desiccated. Despite explicit and active instructions, my simple bagel/cream cheese/lox order came as a "deluxe plate" with superfluous tomato and lettuce---thereby conveniently jacking up the price. The total bill for my breakfast, with tip, came to $46---no, that's not a misprint. I can promise you this is more than $10 more than the charge for the same order at any coffee shop in Midtown, the UES, the UWS, or the Village---altough at any of these the quality will be far higher. Oh yes, the "mystery"?----it's who the (few, sparsely scattered through the room) customers at this place could possibly have come from, and whether they'll ever be back.

Great quality meat and a really enjoyable experience

By MartinMJ22 |

So we wanted to try New York's biggest sandwich so we ordered The Monster - it was "Served on Thick Sliced Rye Bread, with Corned Beef, Pastrami,Roast Beef, Fresh Turkey, Salami,Sliced Tomato, Lettuce,Cole Slaw & Russian Dressing" and it was $52. We got it delivered to our hotel room via one of New York's many delivery companies. The sandwich was well packaged and it was well delivered, it was all held together without any issues from the delivery. It was absolutely huge, ive got a big head and it was the size of my head! The meat was absolutely delicious, really great quality ingredients. My favourites were the corned beef and the turkey. It was a really well prepared sandwich. As far as getting it finished we were nowhere near - it was a pathetic effort and there was 2 of us! But i can say we have tried New York's biggest sandwich! Really delicious food, give it a go. See if you can take on The Monster from Sarge's! Next time we go we will definitely be trying it again.

Comforting food after a long day

By Georgia D |

Exactly what I need after a long day of travelling! I chose the half sandwich (pastrami) and half soup (chicken noodle) - both so delicious!!!

The place is dirty and mediocre

By Marianne O |

Dined at 2pm on 12/21 and the place was not crowed However, the floors and tables were very dirty---had two pastrami sandwiches which were mediocre---they were not hot and the potato pancake was inedible

DECENT

Best matzo ball soup and pastrami

By fracarta2016 |

Open 24 hours, this deli does a fantastic business, serving classic deli fare. Great breakfast and full meals too.

Best Deli I've Been too so far!

By Kyle |

Me and my Fiance were here on Thursday night and had a great time, Service was good, but the food was great, I had a pastrami sandwich and my Fiance had the Corned beef and Turkey sandwich and both were amazing, and the portions sizes were massive!. I visited katz deli on a previous trip and I have to say I prefer sarges without a doubt.

Amazing pastrami on rye without the wait!

By Yiannis D |

Sarge's is another iconic deli in midtown Manhattan and if you want to avoid the big crowd at Katz' but still want a super amazing pastrami on rye, that's the place to go. Desserts were good but not amazing.

lots of great food

By Virginia Pro |

We didn't realize that it was so much food! Portions are over the top! Food was delicious. The place is not very big so we had to wait for a table for 6 and after a while, we decided to split up into 2 groups. That worked well for us as we actually were sitting across the aisle.

The best thing I ate in NYC!

By Peanutbutty |

We had seen this place reviewed on a top 10 places to eat in NYC on YouTube so thought we’d give it a go! It absolutely did not disappoint and the food was ridiculously delicious!! The pastrami melted in your mouth and you got a free side of pickles and home made coleslaw which was rich and creamy!! My bf ordered the thick chocolate milkshake which was so chocolatey and the strawberry cheesecake topped it off perfectly! The staff were friendly and cleaned a table for us really quick! Would 100% recommend this place during your NY stay!!

Worth The Money

By Eric W. |

Working in Manhattan for the week and as I'm working my way through the many restaurants I have bookmarked, I have finally made my way to Sarge's. Here's how it went! Do they even need my review? Nope, but they're gonna get it anyway! Lol. Atmosphere/Appearance: It's an elongated style restaurant with lots of light wood on top of brick and just tons of memorabilia all over the place of celebrities who have passed through these doors. When you first walk in you're greeted by the host's stand then there are a few tables on your left, small booths on the right and then further back the dining room opens up a bit. Up front is the actual meat counter where through the glass you can see the different cuts of meat, vegetables and much more! The noise level was moderate, but this place wasn't meant to be fancy. Service: The menu was enormous. There were so many things to choose from! I can't remember the name of the young lady that took care of me, but I feel like her name started with a G... or maybe it was a J.? I don't know, but she was awesome. Food: Some restaurants give you complimentary bread, this place gives you 2 kinds of pickles and coleslaw. Lol. One of them is like a super cucumbery-like pickle and I'm just not a fan of those. I was able to try 2 different kinds of sandwiches while here. First was the corned beef and these were enormous sandwiches. Like, seriously. First up was the corned beef which was just perfect. Warm, salty, meaty and the Russian dressing added a little bit of sweetness that help cut the salty, heartiness of the sandwich. The choice of bread was grand because it added just a little bit of flavor, but didn't take away from the ingredients inside the bread. The pastrami sandwich was great as well, but it couldn't hold a candle to the corned beef. That could be a personal preference, but that's just how I feel. This one looked a bit different even though the main coloration is similar to the corned beef, the pastrami had a black crust around the edges of each slice from all the additional spices that are added to the brined beef. It's just upper echelon quality beef that Sarge's serves. Excellently executed. Lastly, I finished with the thickest slice of strawberry cheesecake that I've seen in recent years. Lol. Once I put a bite in my mouth I couldn't do anything but laugh. It was so good. So creamy, juicy, cold and just... perfect. I wouldn't change a thing about it! Value: My sandwich was $30.95 in which half of it was corned beef and half was pastrami. The cheesecake was $12.95, but it was gigantic. The food here was pricey, but the portions were OUTRAGEOUS. Lol. I'd say it was totally worth the money because you'll have stuff to take home. Each sandwich can totally feed 2 people. In conclusion, I loved it here and was happy to have finally made it! I'll surely come back in the future to check out some of their other menu items! You should too!

Worth the walk

By Stanley S |

All the years I lived in Metro NYC and worked in NYC, I never heard of this place until a few years ago. WE decided to give it a try on our latest trip and compare it to Katz's and 2nd Avenue Deli (our faves). We ordered a pastrami sandwich to share as well as potato pancakes and a side of fries (way too much food, especially fried). We had an excellent waitress who paced our meal. We talked a bit how we were ex-metro residents and she had moved out of the city;it is always nice to be human and interact with servers, etc. The obligatory pickles and cole slaw were placed on the table with each of us getting portion (one garlic/one new pickle). They were delicious and the garlic grabbed you by the throat. We received our portion of three potato pancakes and they were excellent, not greasy though perfectly round formed (were they pre-made?). They were excellent and I have to say better than K or 2nd. The fries and pastrami came and it was huge. The pastrami was fattier than others we have had but also seemed more flavorful. The fries were too much and very greasy. My wife liked them because they were crispy on the outside and soft inside. I didn't eat many of them, opting for more pancake. Dinner was accompanied by a huge diet Pepsi for me and a Dr, Browns Cream soda (can't get that where we now reside). It was nice not being hurried and being part of the NYC culture we knew and loved. We were stuffed and wished we could have taken the leftover pickles and potato pancake, but alas we had nowhere to store them. An excellent choice, I have to say I give it a grade slightly better then K or 2nd Ave with the slower pace being the deciding factor as well as the heavenly potato pancakes. Well worth the walk to the east side, you just have to decide for yourself if the $75 tab is worth it.

Great N.Y. Kosher Style Delicatessen

By ronco0807 |

Great and fun Jewish kosher style deli in mid-town east on Third Avenue. Amazingly, this restaurant is open 24/7. I've had wonderfully flavorful Matzo Ball soup with noodles and "kreplach (Jewish meat won tons). The corned beef is great, bowl of Cole slaw and pickles are served complimentary on every table. My dining companion got a Pastami sandwich and said it was even better than Katz's. Sandwiches are huge as is all portions. This is a definite go-to place for Jewish meals that taste like your grandmother use to made them. The servers and fast, friendly and professional.

Famous Deli

By Mom’s Jams |

I promise, it’s so worth it! Sure, you’ve visited every famous deli in the city, however, Sarge’s is my favorite. Amazing sandwiches, great staff, and the vibes vibed as we sunk into our cozy booth to inhale our lunch.

Great old fashioned deli

By Joan R |

Unfortunately a lot of NYC's great delis are gone but Sarge's is still here with wonderful corned beef, tongue and pastrami. I always get the corned beef while my husband is partial to Reubens and multiple meats sandwiches. The chopped liver is also quite good. All eat in comes with half and full sour pickles and cole slaw. NOt cheap but worth it for the quality. I always get two meals out of my sandwich and ask for extra rye for the second sandwich.

Authentic Deli

By Escape50283288699 |

A perhaps hidden gem with delicious food, good natured staff and ample portions. The corned beef, pastrami , matzah ball soup and cheese cake were wonderful!

Just Fine

By CW |

We were really looking forward to eating here for lunch, and to be honest, it was just fine. We were recommended it by a few people, but were left a little disappointed. The bread was a little stale, and the service was lacking slightly. For the price of it, we expected a bit more.

Great choice

By izzgp |

Very good pastrami sandwich! Walked in, great place, service and food. No need to wait in line forever. All dishes come with pickles and Cole slaw.

Great deli food and the service was great.

By Cathy S |

Due to the size of the sandwich, we shared the Combo corned beef and pastrami on rye.....and fries to share. The sandwich was delicious. and so large, we shared 1/2 of the sandwich at the restaurant and took the other 1/2 back to the room to share. Then we also ordered a slice of cheesecake with strawberries on top. That cheesecake was delicious.

Food stop whilst in NYC

By Aldogti |

The service was great the portion sizes were also great and also the food service time was great also. My honest review of the food and purely on personal taste was that the food we had wasn’t as nice as Katz’s deli as I say personal preference and for that I can’t give less than 5 stars as Ethan our server was very helpful

Great Family Lunch

By chuckarita |

Sarge's Deli was recommended to us by a local family member as a great location for high quality deli fare. Seven of us visiting New York stopped by for lunch and the menu offerings are endless. We had to adjust to New York City pricing, but all of the meals featured very generous portions and very high quality. Lunch combos are worth a try. I had an option of soup + a sandwich + a beverage and opted for cold borscht with sour cream, a Junior Reuben and a Coke. I thought the sandwich would on the small side but it was a challenge to finish this well prepared sandwich stuffed with tender corned beef. Full sized sandwiches -like pastrami on rye - defied being eaten at a single seating. Service was friendly and prompt. I would definitely go back.

Great food

By scampi1903 |

Brilliant eatery and not too expensive.walked in 11.30 am no line .Had the pastrami sandwich (which was huge and shared a Oreo cheesecake to finish. Great service in a traditional diner .very good

Pickles and Slaw

By Anne F |

Pickles and slaw appetizer! Delicious pastrami and soup. Cheesecake was too much to handle with the reeses, but awesome!!

Classic Diner

By Ilanfreedman |

This deli serves all kinds of sandwiches and omelets. I had a cheese omelet as an entree, and a piece of chocolate fudge cake for dessert.

Awful Service and Poor Food

By Alana D |

I was excited to try this place because I had heard good things and they had plant-based options for the deli meat! But the food wasn't great, it lacked a lot of flavour and the cutlery was also dirty. Worst of all, the waitress (Bonnie) was extremely rude and had 0 patience. She clearly didn't want to be bothered when we had questions about the menu (and the menu is huge). Right when we arrived she just grabbed 2 menus and went to a table without saying a word to us or looking at us, so we didn't know if we should follow, and then she finally gestured to come over. Definitely don't waste your time and money by going here. I wish we had tried out another deli in NYC.

Great value for money and suitable for all

By TheClanster |

After our city tour our driver recommended Sarges. They were efficient and helpful. Very busy but seated quite quickly. Portions generous and our waitress was helpful. Compared to most NY prices this is good value. Our daughters loved the milkshakes and soda with ice cream. Would most certainly return for a more ‘authentic’ NY meal.

Chased away by restaurant and rude staff

By Victor V |

I am a foreigner and I brought 2 kids to the restaurant for a take out. While my wife was purchasing the food, I sat down with my kids as they were tired. Awhile later, the management staff came and chased us away! Absolutely no customer service at all. It is not as if we are not buying anything at all and the tables were so empty. Very rude and unfriendly people. First and last time.

Just incredible pastrami and corned beef!

By Thechrissy |

People SAY "oh it's so tender and juicy," and you roll your eyes because that's what everyone says, whatever. DONT ROLL YOUR EYES!! The corned beef and pastrami (#3) is phenomenal, outstanding, and amazing. They say tourists go to Katz, locals go to Sarg's. Huge amount of meat. My husband and I split one, but my husband said if he was younger, he would have gone for a whole sandwich (he's 54). Loved the coleslaw, not too sweet. Little disappointed in the pickles, kinda bland, and no snap. But totally forgiven by the tasty meat. For dessert, we split a peanut butter chocolate cheese cake around $10 but it was huge and tasty!

Great pastrami but some issues

By SalfromIL |

OK the pastrami was totally tender and tasty. But I was a bit surprised by how little of it we got considering the price. And the potato salad we ordered was just potatoes, mayo and sugar. Really below average. Finally, my egg cream was quite good but milk, chocolate syrup and seltzer for $6? Sorry that’s ridiculous. So while I loved the pastrami, I just had too many issues with the other stuff to make it more than average.

Absolutely awful in every way

By Cookie P |

Looking for a classic NY Deli restaurant, and Sarge's was near our hotel in Midtown East. It was totally disappointing from the service to the coffee and especially the food. Eggs over easy came out burned and broken. Same with the eggs topping my wife's corned beef hash (which she said was good) and it should be for $22.00. They are known for giant deli sandwiches so maybe breakfast was just not a good idea.

Too much…

By citizen X |

Good, but way too much for 1 person. And the pastrami sandwich is 1/8 Bread and 7/8 méat, which is again way too much. Good service though. Interior Also needs a refresher. All and all ok, but you need to know that the pastrami sandwich is fine for 3 people if u look at the meat only

Great NY Deli

By Chattray |

We went to Sarge's twice during our stay. It is a 24/7 NY deli. They specialize in great deli food, not atmosphere. Dinner portions are large and so are the sandwiches. It is in a neighborhood area so many of the patrons are local.

Very thin slices with little flavor.

By travellingGirl111 |

I grew up with Jewish Delis in NYC. This is a bland version with razer thin slices so no texture when you bite. Like eating finely ground meat loaf. Plus: big quantity, efficient service but go to Katz.

Tourist trap trash!

By moonwalker89 |

Tourist trap! Extremely disappointed in this once iconic "Deli" my pastrami sandwich was dry and skimpy, the service was rude and arrogant. Stale bread and they forgot to put mustard on my sandwich. Soggy pickle and insane prices, the line of inexperienced tourists just threw their money away, while actual New Yorkers flee to secret neighborhood Deli's and keep their mouths shut to avoid the line of tourists.

NOT AS GOOD AS IT USED TO BE

By Harvey M |

See my astrix notation at the end of this review. Based a previous review seen below, in my opinion, anyone who calls this Delicatessen the "best in New York City," has not dined out very much. I tried two of Sarge's Delicatessen's soups. Both soups were way below par in my opinion, they were the mushroom barley soup and the vegetable soup. The pastrami sandwich was pleasing but was not equal to the best that I have had elsewhere. *They add a 3.5% surcharge to your total bill if you choose to pay with any credit card. You get a 10% discount off your bill if you pay with cash.

Service

By RustyRoo |

We went for breakfast only four other people in there The waitress was so rude she basically hurried us up didn’t get time to look at menu properly. My daughters eggs were still very undercooked the waitress snatched plate cursing under her breath. Eventually came back still not cooked again waitress very rude and snatched plate cursing again. We felt as though it was a big inconvenience being there felt very uncomfortable would not recommend.

An Oldtiime favorite

By John C |

I regret to report that Sarge's is on the decline. Sandwiches have skrunk in size and quality, while prices have risen. Service quality has also declined from past years. Sad that this former great NY deli seems to be on its way out.

Classic delicious NY deli.

By B P |

Delicious corned beef and matzo ball soup. The service was great. Really enjoyed the complimentary cole slaw and pickles. Potato salad had that classic NY deli taste. I love this place. This is a classic NY deli and I hope it never changes.

A real New York experience.

By Elizabeth R |

I highly recommend this place as a diner which serves huge portions from an extensive menu, It is busy and noisy but that doesn’t matter as it is such a great atmosphere with plenty of locals enjoying their meals as well as tourists. Old style booths and tables and a polite, no nonsense woman who served us was extremely helpful. Soup, veggie was delicious as was the pea and the matzo ball soup apparently was the best ever. The servings are massive and I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen my husband leave any food before. Corned beef hash. So pleased we went there and as a tourist it was better for me than visiting some of the tourist attractions this great city has to offer.

Classic NY deli with even good offering for vegetarians/vegans

By davetheguide |

One of the few classic NY Jewish style delis still left in Manhattan. Loved the coleslaw and pickles. My pastrami sandwich was good, but not the best I've had. I think my vegetarian partner appreciated the deli even more than I did. He really enjoyed his vegetarian Reuben sandwich with vegan "corned beef" and real cheese. Waitress was very nice. This is especially a good choice if you have a vegetarian/vegan in your group who wants to enjoy a real deli with the rest of the carnivores.

Classic Deli Food!

By Carolyn_and_John_B |

Sarge’s promises a classic NY deli experience and it delivers. We ordered take out through Door Dash twice during our visit to the Big Apple. The first time we got a truly overstuffed corned beef/pastrami sandwich. It was delicious, but difficult to fit our mouths around. We also got disappointing waffle fries. They may have been excellent to start but didn’t survive the damp, ten-minute walk to our hotel in crisp form. The second time we got an open-faced sandwich--the Hudson. It was like a Ruben, but with corned beef and pastrami in addition to the Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and Russian dressing. It was a great flavor combo. The potato salad was a definite step-up from the fries. On each trip we also got cheesecake because--why not! It was excellent! The food was always ready faster than predicted by Door Dash. With all the food choices in the area, it says something that we went back for more!

A New York Institution Still Delivers!

By george g |

This was our first visit to Sarge's in-person. 44-years ago we used to order takeout in the middle of the night when I owned a typeshop in the neighborhood. Food was great then, fast-forward to 2024 and our family visit. Six of us, seated immediately and treated to a great lunch. The staff were attentive, the pickles and cole slaw delicious as were our meals. The 1/2 sandwich and soup is not only a great deal, but actually still too much food! The soup is served in a very large bowl. Very. The 1/2 sandwich was larger than many whole sandwiches. The fries, knishes, chopped liver and smoked fish platter were equally excellent. The dining room brought back fond memories of my local deli growing up on West Side. An overall great way to share laughs and food with family.

Don’t miss this deli!

By Dana90210 |

Great deli! More than a mouthful sandwiches that didn’t disappoint. Loved the pickles and slaw that came with the meal.

Since 1964

By Stan Tecza |

Haven’t been to Sarges since the late 1990s but I liked the food here even though it gets overshadowed by Katz. Ordered the Stuffed Derma (Kishka) with Gravy for $11.45 and a $27.95 Hot Pastrami Sandwich with: • Rye Bread • Swiss Cheese (+ $2.00) • Extra Lean (First Cut) + (+ $2.00) • Russian Dressing Yummmmmmm

Traditional NYC deli/diner

By Bob K |

This place was recommended to us by a guy on a bike who had stopped at traffic lights while we looked at the menu of a different nearby deli! It's just what you would expect a NYC diner to be, well used by locals with the usual choice of sandwiches, salads, burgers and entrees. Nicely decorated with art deco style lights throughout

Excellent Food

By Debbie O |

Growing up in a Polish family in a neighborhood that had a strong Jewish presence, I must say that my lunch today at Sargent's did not disappoint. I had a triple decker and am bringing home a lot of leftovers. Yummy

I have been meaning to stop by here for a while when I’m in the city on business and finally had a chance to do it yesterday. So good!! Soup broth was yummy,.sLomgLong.loEverything I bought was delicious. The soup broth was yummy but I’m deducting a star for the matzoh ball which was nothing special

Great food and an authentic NYC experience!

By ChicksWiggle |

This was a great find and a lot closer to where we were staying in Times Square than many of the other highly rated deli's in NYC. The food was great and the servings were very generous (which none of us were able to finish). I married into a Jewish family and even for let, let alone my wife, the Matzo Ball soup and sandwiches just brought back many memories. Also, the day I discovered the Egg Creme!!!!

Lunch

By John K |

Good deli with great coleslaw at first with good pickles. Had corn beef with chopped chicken liver and Swiss cheese...ate 1/2 and had to cancel dinner that night as too much good food at lunch. Would have liked to try lemon meringue pie as looked great. Also, chicken liver taste appeared a little bland to me although had not had for years.

Unbelievable menu

By joan b |

My son brought me to Sarges for lunch. I had Sarges French dip with crinkle fries. Best French dip I ever had. Served on a fresh roll with a good amount of au jus on the side. My son had hot pastrami on a fresh roll. The sandwiches were stacked with meat. The fries were excellent. Prior to lunch we were served a plate with a kosher and cucumber pickle. They serve breakfast all day and are open 24 hours. They also deliver. I can’t say enough about this place. Will be visiting Sarges again on my next visit.

Glad I found the secret..

By Blackjackburger |

They say on their t-shirts "New York's Best Kept Secret". Well Im glad I have found the secret. This is a great little deli in the old style, offering real good value, tasty food in huge portions. On my last few visits to NT I have been looking to have one of the great deli sandwiches, but the other two places I used to frequent are sadly no longer there to the point I was even considering trying out Katz's downtown and joining the lines of celebrity chair spotters. So glad I found Sarges. The lunchtime special menu is great value with a huge number of options on there. I went for a half sandwich (choose whatever filling from the main menu), I chose hot brisket and it comes with fries, a small bowl of soup (four types I went with chicken noodle and was packed with flavour) and a bottomless drink for $19.95. Great value and the brisket just fell apart. My dining partner went for the triple deck turkey club sandwich, which was a tasty as it was huge!. She couldn't manage all of it and I nabbed a quarter and it was delicious. Service was brisk and brash - I say that in the New York style not as negative if you know what I mean. Was a great mix of regulars, locals and just the odd tourist in there all enjoying great food. Its a big of a tight squeeze but as they say what you gonna do. Oh they also give you a complimentary dish of coleslaw (which was nice) and two of those pickles the New Yorkers are so fond of (which I hate). Will certainly be back as I wanna check out the Hash. Great job. Great find.

Best Deli in NYC

By Calzettina |

When in NYC...you "gotta" have @sargesdelinyc! Authentic sandwich that you think you can't finish but you can! We always visit our favorite deli!🗽🗽🗽🗽🗽🎅🧑‍🎄❤️...BTW happy holidays to Bonnie...an amazing server!

Loved it.

By TG Lakes |

Excellent corned beef sandwich. Make sure you add a little mustard. My wife had the soup and 1/2 pastrami sandwich and it was also very good.

Good NY Deli - Huge Portions

By Norman p |

Consider this one of the top 3 deli's alongside 2nd Avenue and Katz. They have more selections then Katz and the portions are bigger than 2nd ave for about the same price. Service was good but for 2 people you may feel a little cramped as the tables are close together but not too bad. If you are staying in a hotel with no fridge you might want to share a sandwich as you will have leftovers.

Pastrami heaven

By geoffbird |

Possibly one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had wow food was amazing staff very friendly nothing was too much trouble well worth the stop

Could be better

By Fitzy828 |

Food was amazing Pastrami was pure heaven. . Service not so much. Too many tables unattended to. There were 2 tables un bussed from the moment we got there to the moment we left.

Excellent breakfast with large

By Yorkshireman |

Excellent breakfast with large portion sizes and unlimited coffee - The salmon and bagel was huge!along with the eggs and sausage etc the value was great. An authentic taste of NYC.

Not worth a detour

By Global Wanderers |

The pastrami was great but otherwise everything was ho hum. The lead waitress was more interested in chatting with staff than serving customers. The cheesecake is massive. We shared a pastrami sandwich and a cheese cake and it was a lot of food and a lot of money (about $60 - plus tip - with a glass of wine and a beer). Definitely not worth a return visit or a detour.

Old school deli

By AlanLondon_UK |

Classic deli with a massive menu. A bit scruffy round the edges and the entrance is full of Deliveroo drivers collecting take outs but it does what does well. Ridiculously thick hot pastrami sandwich was good and tasty with pickles and coleslaw on the side. Home fries were delicious but it was more than any human can eat haha.

Not made to feel welcome

By Richard S |

Came here for a pastrami sandwich as we researched this deli was better and not as crowded. The sandwich did live up to its expectations but, due to us being British tourists, I didn't feel the staff were welcoming, just felt like we we made to feel we shouldn't have been in there. Nevermind been there and have no reason to return there again.

A quick but delicious lunch. Their meats snd chopped liver are excellent and without the crowds at Katz’s. Just as goi

By Allan S |

The food snd service was spot on here at noonday. They have a very edifice menu that covers all meals especially breakfast and their corned beef hash is awesome. I like their overstuffed meat sandwich chef served in hot rye breads and their mustard works very. Well with the good. Ygeyvss as kid have round knishes.

Despite being fairly close to the time square, this place didn't feel like a tourist trap. The food and service were excellent,

By Travelingwookie1 |

Sarge's is one of those places that popped up during your research for NYC. I went for the pastrami sandwich..it was okay, but it probably didn't live up to the hype.. I was straight and seated without issue. Service was timely. The beer is upsettingly warm. If you're looking for the best pastrami sandwich,.keep looking, this isn't it.. If you want to try a pastrami sandwich in a hearty NYC setting, then try this place. Just don't think it's going to be the best..

Great pastrami

By Marion_Laiou |

The pastrami sandwich is good and is for two people. The soup with chicken was really good. The price is a bit high. But I think that the cheesecake was the highlight (Really, really, really good).

Pretty good Italian beef, great hand cut fries

By Sam |

The Italian beef was good and salty. It's an average portion size. Their hand cut fries were amazing! They also had vinegar to go with it (not many places have vinegar as a condiment).

DURING THE VIRUS

By doug100worth |

DURING TIME OF VIRUS......SPECTACULAR. We ordered sandwiches and fixings on Seamless Delivery and everything was just great. Of the choices on the upper eastside, this is far and away the best. We had pastrami, corned beef and roast beef. Just great.

Patrons beware - not following Covid-19 safety protocols

By Sebastian |

What a disappointment. I ordered a cake for my aunt's birthday here. Unfortunately, after the disturbing experience, she never got it. When I arrived two minutes before 10am, I was screamed at and informed that no one could help me by all of the men behind the counter preparing food. When someone who was willing to help me finally arrived, she was very nice and apologetic for the behavior. However, during my wait I realized there was a total of 3 men working without face coverings or gloves of any sort, two of them behind the counter preparing food. I drew the line and requested a refund when one of the men with no face mask or gloves started handling my cake to box it up. For a restaurant that proudly displays multiple signs stating you can not enter or be served without a proper face covering, it is preposterous, reckless and entirely disrespectful to allow your staff to handle the food of others while not practicing proper safety protocols. The establishment is a JOKE and patrons should beware.

Not for everyone

This was our first time to the states and one of my 'must do's' was to have a pastrami on rye sandwich, but had to placate the wife as she is a veggie. Having decided to go here instead of Katz's deli, I was hopeful that my wife would at least have some choice, but she didn't. When asked if there were are veggie options, the waitress nearly choked! We eventually decided on a tuna melt for my wife and I had the pastrami on rye as planned. While I must admit that I thoroughly enjoyed my sandwich, it was marred by the fact my wife was not at all impressed. She described her sandwich as wet and tasteless and lacking in any finesse. While I'm sure pure meat-eaters will drool at the massive meat portions and succulent meat choices, please bear in mind that your other half may not be impressed with this 'old school' deli

Terrible bad customer service

By Newyorker2431 |

This restaurant charges fees for credit cards but does not warn customers. i was surprised to see a surcharge in my invoice. This restaurant cares less about having customers. The manager expelled me from the restaurant and did not offer any kind of satisfaction. The Owner of this restaurants is going to have a problem with such incompetent manager.

Has an A rating. My opinion rating the food only is C- or F

We ordered a take out Cobb salad and it was besides unappetizing a total mess. The chicken was big square chunks of chicken? perhaps old hen. The egg had a black yolk - we do not eat over cooked eggs. The salad was also cut in small squares. The avocado was acceptable who can fail an avocado beside having it hard. Chopped liver was very expensive. Can be bought on E Houston Street at a much more reasonable price. We will not go back.

No wait. No line. Comfortable seating excellent service and great food

Great Food and Awesome Service!

We've been to NYC a few times but this place is hands down the best! Our waitress - Amy was friendly and welcoming. We were seated right away and Amy answered our questions and gave us good suggestions. We had Cole Slaw and pickles and split a combo sandwich - Corned Beef & Pastrami with Cole Slaw and Russian Dressing and an order of fries. The corned beef and pastrami were the best we've ever had. and the fries were great. We both loved the cole slaw and pickles. That said - neither of us had a prayer of finishing this mountain of food. The sandwich was enormous - as was the order of fries. Special thank you to Amy who took great care of us! If you are in NYC - just go!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "The best-kept secret in NYC!"

A True New York Gem: Sarge’s Delicatessen & Diner If you want to experience an authentic New York diner without the tourist traps, Sarge’s Diner is easily the best-kept secret in the city. Unlike the more famous spots where you'll find endless lines of tourists, Sarge’s offers a genuine, local atmosphere where you can actually get a table without the wait. Here is why it’s a must-visit: * Authentic Food & Massive Portions: The food is the real deal. The portions are incredibly generous—you definitely won't leave hungry. * The Reuben Pastrami: This is my absolute recommendation for anyone looking for world-class Pastrami. It’s perfect every single time. * Top-Tier Service: The staff is consistently friendly, professional, and welcoming. * Fair Pricing: You get high-quality food at normal prices, free from the typical "tourist surcharge" found elsewhere in Manhattan. For us, visiting Sarge’s has become a tradition every time we are in NYC. If you want a real taste of the city with a relaxed vibe and great service, this is the place to go. Highly recommended!

Well Worth It!

By TYsadventures |

Everything I expected, wanted and imagined! The tongue sandwich, chopped liver and split pea soup were tasty, well seasoned and delicious. The store itself is long and narrow which made for a tight turning radius in my wheelchair but it was very accessible with a flat roll-in manual entrance. The staff was very friendly and attentive. It was very busy but they made sure everyone was served timely and with care. It is slightly expensive but well worth the quality, service and experience.

Pastrami!

This is not the place to come if you’re not very hungry! The Pastrami Rueben was delicious, as was the super chicken soup with kreplach and matzoh balls.

A Wonderful Deli

By James Z |

We went about 2:30PM on a Tuesday for a late lunch. We walked in and were seated without a wait. We both ordered the #3 combination with Corned Beef and Pastrami. The meats were perfect with great taste and very lean. The quantity was off the chart. We both ended up just eating the meat dipped into their great mustard and leaving some of the bread from the second half of the sandwich. We took a couple of deserts to go for later that night. They were very good but not as outstanding as the sandwiches which I would say were perfect New York City deli.

Let down based on the reviews

By Vincent S |

This is a decent size dining room(14-16 indoor seating. A few tables outside). We were asked for our vaccine cards. They had an additional "lunch menu" which I did not see on-line. We were greeted promptly. We came in at lunch time. My wife had pancakes. I had lox&bagel with a cup of slit pea soup. I got the soup quickly. The soup did not have a whole lot of flavor. Then got the entrees shortly after that. Appeared 1 pancake was a lot darker than the others. The lox were plenty. My wife's coffee came with milk rather than cream/half&half. The server was not the friendliest. The bussers were very friendly. The other food coming out seemed to be very healthy portions.

Omg 😫

By joanne O |

Omg this place was shocking...I thot we were going to get the real new york deli experience and avoided Katz because we heard so many reviews about this place.... it felt dirty and the staff looked sloppy and rough and the cook slapping about into toilets yuk yuk yuk first time and most definitely last...sandwich was disgusting and expensive and the whole dirty experience just put us off 🙃 the pickle and coleslaw was just about edible at a pinch yuk yuk yuk

A very large varied menu

By Rick C |

This deli offers a very large varied menu with something for almost anyone. It’s a bit pricey but with delicious food. Huge sandwiches are their hallmark and come with a tall stack of meats that cost around $29, but it’s worth it. The service is quick and efficient and I would recommend this deli to friends and family and am looking forward to my next visit.

Tasty Classic NY Deli

By traveltime841 |

Sarge's has replaced Second Avenue Deli as my go-to in Manhattan of late - probably because of all the options! If you have a friend who can't decide what to get off a one page menu, they will be very confused here - the good news is that almost all the food here is excellent! Service can be spotty at times, but my expectations are lower at a deli anyway. Personal favorites are knish, potato pancakes and chopped liver!

Great food

By Marlena N |

I was a bit nervous from reading other reviews, but I’m so happy we went ! Service was excellent, food was delicious. Portions are huge! My husband and I shared the open face pastrami and brisket sandwich - so good and not too salty either. The fries and pickles were great accompaniments as well. I would definitely recommend this place:)

Good stuff

By bobshifi |

Quintessential NYC deli. I wanted to try something other than Katzs so I went to Sarges. I walked right in and was greeted with pickles and coleslaw. Ordered the Corned Beef on Rye, potato pancake and kreplach soup. The kreplach filling was sweet which is not to my liking. The Corned beef was great, but the pancake was the BEST I have ever tasted. (Except for Grandma’s). Im glad I went and highly recommend.

Large group tax

By Pedro V |

Large group tax wtf People should be obligated to tell the customers that. 50$ to the trash, and its a sandwich below average!!!!

Can’t miss NYC diner

Amazing breakfast, great service, so fast and friendly. The Hudson sandwich is the best - pastrami, sauerkraut, corned beef and Swiss on the.

Well worth the visit

This deli offers the quintessential Jewish deli experience without going over the top. The food was outstanding with large portions. Service was brisk but very attentive.

Great Deli Food Fun Service

By capec0d55 |

First the food was just great and our waitress though rough around the edges was perfect fun for the meal. Fresh coleslaw the best I've ever eaten, way too much food but FUN,FUN,FUN. Will return

Not much has changed

By Mitre100 |

I previously reviewed this place in 2019 and focused on the consistently surly service. The server I was thinking of appears to have left, but it hasn't much improved. They make you feel like crap - throwing you at any old table almost as an afterthought, and then forcing you to beg to get service. You know that feeling that a server is intentionally avoiding your gaze? They have perfected that here. It's just an unpleasant experience - in this business climate, they should do better! One more thing: as I said previously, the food is pretty good, but the omelet I had the other day was embarrassing (see photo - thatbis exactly how it came). This place does so much catering and deli business that perhaps they don't care - but it's really not pleasant to eat here.

Best Delicatessen in Mid Town

By Charles R |

Firstly, the praise for the pastrami and matzo ball soup suggests that the establishment excels in delivering high-quality and flavorful dishes. These iconic items are often associated with delicatessens, and it's great to hear that Sarge's does them justice. The use of the word "amazing" to describe the pastrami implies that it exceeded your expectations, which is always a positive sign for a dining experience. Additionally, your mention of great service is crucial in creating an overall positive impression. Attentive and friendly service can significantly enhance a dining experience, making customers feel valued and well taken care of. It's good to know that the staff at Sarge's contributed positively to your visit. Finally, your comment about the New York-style cheesecake being "to die for" suggests that the dessert options at Sarge's are noteworthy. A memorable dessert can leave a lasting impression on diners, and it seems like the cheesecake was a highlight for you. In conclusion, your review paints a picture of a restaurant that excels in both food quality and service, with standout dishes like pastrami, matzo ball soup, and New York-style cheesecake. This positive feedback is likely to be helpful for others looking for a satisfying dining experience, and it reflects well on Sarge's Delicatessen & Diner.

Yum

By Innyjim |

Shared a half corned beef and half pastrami with my wife, was yum. I think we preferred the pastrami over the corned beef, the bark on it was gorgeous. Defo give Sarge’s a go, not insanely busy like Katz’s and certainly as good. Full of locals which is always a good sign.

Good old school Delicatessen in NYC

I ordered the Pastrami Omelet and it was very good. My wife had the french toast and it was very good too. The place has a lot of character.

Don’t waste your money

The waitress with the bad breath is horrendous! Idk if she was drunk or high or both. I went alone for dinner and the meal was cold. I was never asked if all was well. Check was left on table with my meal. Never Again!!!
