Very, very tasty!

By pyatachok |

Small, cozy, funky and rustic decorated place, but WHAT A TREAT and such a wonderful addition to our NY must visit restaurants list!!!!!!! The food is VERY tasty and creative, the service is nice, very pleasant and efficient, and very professional. The best part is the value. Everything priced very reasonable, particularly for NY. We are very glad we've found this place and are sure we'll visit it every time we are in the city. Meanwhile we hope the lucky ones who live in the area around will keep them really busy.

Good food!

By Dneuburger |

This place is not much for ambience but the menu is interesting and the food is very tasty. I thought the portion size was on the small side despite the prices being what you would expect in Manhattan (eg it’s pricey at $170 for two people with tip). The service was pleasant and the food was quite good. We had the pan roasted fiddleheads and shrimp ajillo appetizers (both were good). I had the duck and my friend had the tagliatelle and we enjoyed them. There isn’t much in the way of “sides” served with the entree so don’t think the portion sizes will be large - they ain’t! But this place is worth checking out. On a side note, there are vegan choices if that’s how you swing. Enjoy!

Nice surprise

By jcmtl1965 |

Picked the restaurant because it was part of restaurant week and because it serves fried green tomatoes. My friend and I both had the fried green tomatoes as an appetizer which were just crispy enough and very tasty. Then I had the Spaetzle which was delicious but just too much for me (I was sorry I couldn't bring it back to my hotel). My friend had the Steelhead Trout which she enjoyed. We ended the meal by splitting the Apple Strudel and the Chocolate Semi Freddo, both very tasty. The service was very good as well. It was an enjoyable evening.

Exceptional restaurat

By Jay M |

The food is a modern Austrian-fusion thing, but it's all really good and beautifully presented. Everything we had was fresh and delicious, and the dishes were unique and innovative without being precious. This restaurant is the best I have found in this part of town -- let the tourists go to Morton's. I wandered in here one night after the restaurant I had a reservation at (the upscale Italian in Eataly) was unbearably noisy and overcrowded, and I was so pleased! The service was good, too.

A lucky find

By Ian S |

We are staying around the corner and I found this place by accident. The front of the Restaraunt opens completely on to the street and the decor is kinda funky so I took a chance and booked for the family..... and from then it was a great experience! The staff were delightfully helpful and attentive and knew their menu well. I started with a Jalapeño cocktail , followed by a fluke and tomatillo ceviche and finished with the special of bratwurst and Brussels ..... all delicious and full of flavours that really worked. We suspected the Chef was either Austrian or German by a few of the wines and dishes on the menu but this heritage was blended into a broader modern menu very cleverly. My wife’s chicken liver pate was one of the best she has ever had and the schnitzel was great. We hope to eat there again before we leave NY!

Unglaublich

By Galen B |

I LOVE THIS PLACE. An Austrian restaurant with food that far surpasses expectation. So much so that I came here two nights running. Night one I had the Spätzle. Night two I had the Wiener schnitzel. Excellent on both occasions. Milan and Tom are two of the friendliest and finest cocktail makers you will find. Go here. You will love it.

To be skipped

By GiGi25w |

While the dining choices downtown continue to be limited, I have to agree with the other comments. The nice atmosphere and good food are not enough to overcome the unpleasant staff. It is a shame...

Exceptional

By Brian M |

I had cod done to perfection and a medley of vegetables with an incredible light sauce. Reasonably priced and exceptional quality. Would go back in heart beat.

Incredible romantic restaurant!!!

By WilliamWillieWilson |

Schilling provided us with such an enchanting evening for my birthday dinner. What a great experience!!! I'd say this restaurant is a solid 4.5 with a thoroughly delicious menu from top to bottom. Although they feature authentic Austrian food, you don't have to be accustomed to European cuisine to enjoy an evening at this restaurant. Situated in the shadow of the new World Trade Center, tucked away on a quiet street in the Financial District that empties each day after the Stock Exchange closes, this hidden gem is one of the top-rated Manhattan restaurants on TripAdvisor for a reason! The cooking is phenomenal, the atmosphere is vey romantic, and the service is fantastic. We began with the salami spread, which is to die for, highly recommended!!! In fact, get two or three and share them with the table!!! We tried the mussels and clams in a soup-like presentation which was pretty tasty as well. The schnitzel was impeccably flavorful in all its deep-fried goodness. The spätzle was not as cheesy as I had hoped, but was very good. But the roasted duck stole the show, ordered upon the waiter's recommendation and sliced atop a bed of heavenly lentils. This was truly the filet mignon of duck!!! I highly recommend this restaurant for any special occasion!

Perfectly designed restaurant with amazing food

By ID |

Wandered past this place a couple of times and it was always buzzing, so decided to give it a try. Glad I did! Friendly service in a brilliantly designed, understated restaurant that fits in perfectly with its surroundings, and most importantly, both delicious food and an unusual, well-chosen wine list. Highly recommended.

Not too bad

By Wilson L |

Friends of ours reserved this restaurant for a double date. We didn't know what to expect but found it to be very decent. Service from our French waitress was good. Food was good as well. Place was casual and vibe was good, even though it wasn't that full for a Saturday night.

Cosy little restaurant

By Wanderer581490 |

We had a nice, tasty meal here. Staff were friendly and attentive and the room decorated nicely for the season. It’s very drafty near the entrance curtain, I could’ve done with a blanket across my legs.

Lovely Austrian cafe

By pranjals |

The ambiance is absolutely delightful, that combined with the number of vegetarian choices makes this an ideal place. I liked how quiet it was even though the tables are quite close to each other.

A amazing culinary discovery deep in the heart of the financial district

By rnarisetti |

The reviews felt too good to be true but everything about Schilling is just about perfect. The menu is mid-sized but has terrific and authentic Austrian food as well as adjacent choices, the drinks and wine list is perfect and the service is authentic, friendly and good. The place can be full from those who know what it offers so definitely make reservations even for a weekday night (there is a very long communal table too so you could end up there). If I had one complaint it is that the getting into and out of your chairs is challenging but once you are seated, enjoy the food adventure.

Great FiDi Lunch Spot!

By c114nyc |

I've been here twice for lunch, and both times I had a great meal. Love the rustic, romantic looking decor. Out of all the commercial and/or typical lunch places in the FiDi, this is a nice change. The second time I had lunch, the menu was a short, prix fixe menu (maybe for Restaurant Week?). I had the peach/cherry salad to start, Tagliatelle as the main course, and the apple strudel for dessert---each was delicious, and a perfectly sized dish. I wasn't hungry when I left, and didn't feel overly full. Definitely recommend as a great lunch spot---a refreshing restaurant for the area.

Business team dinner

Came here with a large group and they were great at accommodating us. The food was excellent and we had a blast! All the dishes were amazing! Put some recommendations, but they were all very good.

Amazing Food, Great atmosphere

By Amita R |

The couple we were with suggested this restaurant as a new, upcoming place and we were not disappointed. I felt like we had half the menu: We started with the Crostini (Amazing!), Hamachi Crudo (I am not a fish eater and I even thought this was good) and Duck Liver (the two gentlemen who had it, wished they could have had more!) For dinner, it was: Wiener Schnitzel --> The raspberry/cherry sauce that came with was solid! Branzino --> The broth that it came in was delicious! Black Pepper Tagliatelle --> Not a drop left on the plates. There was nothing on the menu with chocolate for dessert, which is the only reason we passed. I am sure they would have been excellent as well.

Great Hidden Gem

By Doug D |

Great intimate, casual dining spot in FIDI in New York. Went on a Saturday evening - early. Had great schnitzel - nice white wine and very pleasant service. Only knock was the spaetzle. If was overdone with cheese an$ cream that made it very rich. Would rather just have the traditional side, which they have and you can ask for. Strudel was also quite good. A great experience at reasonable prices (by NYC standards).

So Many Surprises, and Hamilton Too

By William B |

We were taking a walking tour of Little Syria (who knew, a great surprise in the Lower West Side) when, near the tour's end, I spotted an intriguing restaurant just across the street. The front wall opened fully to the street (a quiet one with little traffic but steps from the new World Trade area) and even the long community table running down the center looked inviting. I talked my friends into giving it a shot for dinner, and surprise: it was wonderful! The asparagus appetizer was a marvel; the special bread dish was delicious. Our server was charming and disarmingly funny in a very good way. Service was attentive but not at all rushed. I had branzino as a main; R had the spaetzle (sp?) and C had the chicken - each one was excellent. Wines were generous pours; and sadly no room for dessert. And the final surprise - no, we weren't comped for the meal, sorry to say - the final surprise was at our neighboring table: one of the stars of Hamilton who had just finished his run in that incredible musical was dining with friends. That night we felt like we were 'in the room' ...

Disappointed

By Florence A |

The restaurant is located in a place undergoing work on the exterior, cozy interior, the waitress very friendly and alone in the dining room despite the crowds, a well presented plate however the burger was overcooked, the steak really tasted like it was burnt , we didn’t even finish it…. The escalope looks really hearty though. Too bad we may have gone wrong Result: $120 2 aperitifs 2 Burgers

The competition in the Austrian restaurants segment is hardly murderous

By Phayao13 |

Located in a what one might call a restaurant desert to be in New York.Even more fun, it will then be to find this messy, charming restaurant environment where you least expect to find Central European menu that works here but stands fairly smoothly in the countries of origin. Kitchen that does not offer any extravagana, but if you like comfort food you are at home.Sympathetic service despite being fully booked.

another great weiner

Nice Place, Austrian Menu

Good selection of wine and beers. We enjoyed the Wiener Schnitzle, and Lamb Shank. The Apple Strudel was good, but the portion was stingy.

Good value food Lower Manhattan

Great spot!

The food was delicious, the atmosphere was wonderful and the service was attentive. What more does one want?

Superbly prepared Austrian meal

By occdocbill |

Tucked in an old storefront, this establishment was well planned and appointed. The lighting and background music are perfect, and there are old implements creatively adapted, such as the copper pots tuned hanging light shades. The communal table runs its length but with small tables/booths on either side and a few seats at the bar near the rear kitchen. I had to go for the rave weinerschnitzel and was far from disappointed. Actually the extras made the dish: salted lettuce and cherry marmalade garnish an two small sides of cucumber and potato salad. I added the brussel sprouts, which made for an awesome combination. Stoke of brilliance to add fresh pomegranate seeds to the sprouts to cut the bitterness. A tap pale ale topped it off for a spectacular meal.

Decent food, but felt ripped off when paying

By Pascal |

The food was okay – nothing special, but not bad either. Unfortunately, the experience was overshadowed by what happened when it came time to pay. We weren’t given any option to choose the tip amount ourselves; instead, a fixed tip was automatically added without our consent. This came across as a bit of a rip-off and left us with a bad impression. Transparency when it comes to billing is just as important as good food – and that’s definitely an area where this place needs to improve.

Very good schnitzel, great ambiance.

By Giorgio T |

We came here for lunch during restaurant week, and had a very pleasant experience. The ambiance is very nice and cozy, with a rustic, fun decor and long tables. It's a great space for couples as well as for larger groups. The menu is mostly from Austria: the wiener schnitzel is very good, and the apfelstrudel is excellent. The service is very friendly and the atmosphere quite relaxed and cozy. I'm not sure how loud it gets at dinner time, but it seems to be doing well as it's impossible to find a table at peak hours on a Friday night. I recommend it and will definitely go back, whether with friends or for a business dinner.

Wonderful Fun Place

By haleybale |

Our family of 5 had a great dinner here on Friday night. The building and decor is so cute and fun! It is small so reservations are good or you can sit at the long community table in the middle. We would have liked it with just the atmosphere but then we got the food! The food was excellent! Overall, we highly recommend Schilling.

A great place

Great food, nice restaurant. A former garage, transformed into a cosy restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere. European inspired food. Recommended by the Michelin guide.

Not worth coming back

By Hanna H |

This was a one time place for me. Without going into too much detail, our wait staff just really killed the vibe for us. We wondered in late on Saturday night, because it was dead, and were excited to try something different and not have to wait. When we asked our waiter what he recommended said "everyone gets the schnitzel". And that was it. We asked about wine and thank god he brought over the bartender who was a sommelier. He recommended a lovely wine. Then we order the cauliflower which was DELICIOUS, very flavorful, has cauliflower ever been called flavorful?! haha we then ordered the housemade tagliatelle and the wiener schnitzel. When I asked how the tagliatelle was our waiter told us "if you want noodles, i'd go to an Italian place." Although I appreciate the honesty, a recommendation other than "everyone gets the schnitzel" would have been appreciate and I feel is not asking too much. So unfortunately, along with the piss-poor recommendations from him, the rest of our services was under par and our tip reflected that. The bar tender and the hostess were lovely. But we will not be back.

Love the Schnitzel

By 973B |

Have eaten lunch here twice and if you are with a large party be sure to call as seating is limited for a group as its a small space. There were only two waiters and they had trouble keeping up with the lunch crowd, with all tables full, so don't be in a hurry. I have had the schnitzel both times and wished the potato salad and cucumber salad were dispensed with a larger portion as both are really delicious. The interior is very recycled but pleasant and lighting is a good level.

A little gem

By Gabbar1945 |

This little restaurant tucked into a remodelled building is a real gem. In the downtown part (Financial District) but don't let that deter you. Decor is great with some lovely recycled timbers to hold up the important bits but the food is even better. Portions are adequate but not the jumbo sized things often created. Coffee is a real surprise and is undoubtedly the best we have encountered in USA. Top marks to the Chef, the Barista and to our lovely waitress Stephanie.

Horrible service!

By Carolina T |

My partner and I stopped by for dinner on a Wednesday night when the restaurant was half empty. Our waitress (a Caucasian woman with brown hair braided down the back) was awful. We waited to order as we watched her chatting for 10 minutes with another table, completely oblivious to us waiting. Meanwhile, a table next to us with a different waitress was seated, ordered, and served. We had to ask that waitress if she could serve us instead as our waitress continued to joke and talk at her leisure. When our waitress finally did come over after the other waitress told us we were waiting for her, she replied, “Oh, did you need more time?” We were fed up and decided to leave due to her complete obliviousness and the slow and horrible service. At this point, she had served the drinks and threatened to call the police if we didn’t pay her. Needless to say, we will never go back and made it clear what we thought of her. The job is to serve customers efficiently; it is not about chatting about yourself while customers wait to order and be served.

Wanted to give it a higher rating

By dwhir |

I liked the location and layout/design of the restaurant, which looks like an old converted garage with wide plank wood floors, brick walls, and a cool overhead sliding garage door that is open when in business. We went on a Sunday night on the early side. We were the first to arrive but i don't hold that against the restaurant, since when i walked by the night before it was pretty crowded. We were a bit surprised that they weren't serving cocktails that evening (not sure why) but wine/beer was still available. The server was pretty laid back but very nice. So far so good. That's when things turned for the worse. We ordered appetizers and main dishes. Here are some of the key issues we encountered: 1) It took forever to get the food. Remember, we were the first ones there and even by the time we left there were only 6 tables of customers (out of maybe 30). The appetizers took nearly 40 minutes. The main dishes over an hour. We asked two or three times and were always told "the kitchen was having some problems but we should be good soon." Really? 2) My wife ordered the "fresh fig salad with grilled radicchio". When it finally arrived, there were no fresh figs, only grapes. When we inquired, the server said that it had a fig jam and was new on the menu. Don't forget, this was July, the middle of fresh fig season. Not only was it a lame answer, how can they do the bait and switch without making the change on the menu. We returned it because my wife wanted the fresh figs. Five minutes later, they came back and said "oh, we do now have fresh figs". By that time, i had finished my appetizer, so my wife said not to bother. Very amateurish on their part. 3) My wife also ordered the burger, which included spicy pickles and dijonaise. The burger came but without pickles or dijonaise. When my wife inquired, the server said "are you sure there were no pickles?" What, like my wife ate them while the server wasn't looking. C'mon, that is lame. 4) While we were eating, we observed the staff eating and drinking at the bar. Not sure that should be done. That stuff is supposed to be behind the scenes and, when the food is taking so long to be delivered, the optics aren't great when you're watching these guys sitting down and eating. On the positive side the food we had was tasty. I had the Caesar to start schnitzel for a main dish. Both were really good. My wife's burger was also tasty. Overall, this place didn't impress me. The service didn't have it together and the menu either hadn't been updated or they simply were comfortable switching stuff out figuring that most people wouldn't notice. Either way, not good. I wouldn't go back.

Nice Impromptu Surprise!

By LJK |

Took a flash trip to NYC and didn´t have time to research restaurants. Wandered around our hotel for an hour looking for something appetizing, different from the norm, and fairly healthy. Almost gave up but remembered walking past a cute little place and ventured back. We were the only ones sitting in the entire restaurant. We loved the décor, the waitress was accommodating and very helpful as well as patient with all of our questions. The food was exactly what we were looking for. Loved the accompaniments to the schnitzel and the spaetzle was tasty as well. Dessert was very good but a VERY small portion, that would be the only area I could recommend improving on. Overall, great little nook to try typical Austrian cuisine, would definitely go back.

Restaurant Week Lunch

By Sabena S |

Being Swiss, Helga was keen to have lunch at Schilling. Restaurant Week seemed the perfect way to sample the $29’menu. It was a chilly day so the mushroom consommé with noodles and a pickled egg was both warming and hearty. The Weiner Schnitzel that followed was lackluster. The excessive breading seemed to dominate the piece of meat and worse was not seasoned properly. Both the cucumber dill salad and the potato salad strangely looked similar in color. The lingonberry sauce was missing. Helga chose the apple strudel to end her meal. I had the chocolate lava cake with a cannelle of vanilla ice cream. The cake was tasty but the ice cream was ordinary. The coffee that was served was acrid and tasted like it had been sitting there for too long. How could it be served? Neither of us plan on returning.

Don't miss schilling

By GrannyDory2013 |

we are ending a 5 day visit and by chance selected schilling for our last dinner. It is fabulous. We tried the chicken liver mousse and the fresh ricotta appetizer. For main course a bone marrow dish and fresh tomato salad. The others tried the hamburger with amazing fries. For dessert strudel and terra misu. Elena was a charming wait person. It's new and I can't rave enough about our experience.

Really Great Food

By Scarlett T |

Had dinner here, solo on a business trip and I’d recommend it. It has a good location as It’s close to hotels and World Trade Center Memorial. The food was fantastic. The bread was fresh and tasty and everything about the schnitzel dinner was over the top excellent. I had a coffee which was better than most places and the desert was great too. In addition the wait staff was very attentive and certainly made me feel welcome.

Amazing!!

By Nanci1959 |

This is just a fabulous restaurant for so many reasons. The atmosphere. The staff. The service. The food. And the Chef, who as an added bonus, came over and introduced himself to our table. At the start of our evening, we were greeted by warm and friendly staff, who were all too eager to make sure we got the best experience possible. The servers were attentive without being too pushy. The atmosphere was fun and unique, and when the weather permits, they open a garage door making diners feel like they're at an outside cafe. But the big draw here, besides everything else, is the unbelievable food. Everything we ordered was delicious. And much different than I had anticipated, especially it being Austrian Cuisine. But each bite burst with flavors which were totally unexpected. So next time you're in the Financial District and you want to have a great meal, you should definitely try Schilling. You won't be disappointed.

Small and Rustic with Good Food and Service

By belochka25 |

Small and rustic place with very friendly service and very good good. Had dinner with two coworkers and we all enjoyed it. We each had a main course of chicken, fish and pork dishes respectively and shared two sides. We also had coffee and shared a desert.

Downtown and cool.

By TheLiterateChef |

Special appetizer was seared Fois Gras. If they have it, get it! The schnitzel is perfection, served with a trio of small salads, cucumber, potato and lettuce. For a side, do order the Brussels Sprouts, they are outstanding. The desserts are limited, but the strudel is the real thing.

By Austrian Owner of Edi and the Wolf, Not Quite Glowing in Shadow of WTC

By Douglas C |

A Tinder date told me about this place. I had never heard of it before, and it actually seems a very strange location for a bar / bistro that is made by the guy who created the East Village sensation Edi and the Wolf. But I tried it out anyway, because Tinder. There doesn't seem to be much happening on the street, despite scads of tourists craning their heads up at the Freedom Tower, and despite the W hotel being just around the corner. I saw none of the W Hotel sort around this place. It was about 7:30 on a Saturday night and about five people were seated. More eventually filed in, and I didn't notice their plates. The place didn't have the same energy as a thriving foodie spot. Bar service was okay. Espresso reminded me of a bad capsule coffee. My date had a prosecco. Fizzy and delightful, unlike her. Typically in a place with this brand, I would expect a lot of younger men and women, millenials, and lots of food and communal eating. But the communal table at the middle didn't seat anyone the entire time I was there. Not sure if because there wasn't much going on, or if it's not something that gets filled till later in the evening. Location is a big issue here. I hardly think of West Wall Street / Financial District area as a place to have fun. It's a work and leave location. Best of luck to them. And to me. Tinder date didn't amount to much.

One of the best Schnitzel ever had :) 5*

Blocks away from 9/11 Museum

By Sjy434 |

Took Tripadvisors 5 star recommendation and was not disappointed. Food was delicious and moderately priced. Schilling is on a quiet street just a few blocks from 9/11 Museum . Wonderful service and atmosphere!

Overpriced and Underwhelming

By Mel W |

Walking in, the atmosphere is lovely. The staff were friendly, the wine was nice. However the food was so disappointing. Bordering on inedible. I had a salad, and the leaves tasted burnt. I know. We also ordered a side of Brussel sprouts, which were drowning in something sour and bitter. Again, indebile. I left most of mine and was devastated to pay a full price bill (and tip!) for small portions of disgusting food. Do not recommend - there are hundreds of better eateries within walking distance.

Very nice

By SRWelch00 |

Came here during Restaurant Week. Nice atmosphered, good service. Sweet Corn Bisque and the Fried Tomatoes were very good; the Weiner Schnitzel was good, and the burger, though it has a thick, nicely cooked pattie, was a tad sweet for my taste (the onion jam, mainly). The Strudel and Chocolate Souffle were quite good.

Excellent service and everybody liked their meals

By andal03 |

While there is not a huge selection of main courses, we all found something that was excellent for us.... the sides were great and we will definitely be back.

Excellent

By Tim C |

Went for a later dinner and were very impressed. The service was prompt, and the food was superbly prepared. We had the schnitzel and the burger as our entree, with a side of mushrooms. Very satisfying and great flavor. I hope to return soon.

Absolutely love this restaurant!

This is our second visit here. The food is amazing as are the people! Saśa’s cocktails are amazing. You will love this it here!

Great Food in an Odd Locale

By Max D |

This is a pleasant surprise as you would not expect such a place in the middle of nowhere. Quite hidden and a gem in a hidden path. The cooking is quite creative but not overly creative at the same time. You get tired of food just trying to be different after a while and here, nothing is pretentious and just tastes great and works. I’ve been coming here a few times and basically trying their entire menu and it’s been great and really tasty. If there is any weak spot on the food, it is the dessert dept which do not really work and so I usually skip it. Service is fine though sometimes there is no one at the door to seat you. If there is any complaint it would be lack of ample good seating, The booths near the wall are best and most comfortable but sometimes they’re all booked and so the center communal table is next best bet but just don’t get the seat near to the door, Too much traffic there and bugs flying around since the front wall is a garage door that’s usually opened in the summer. The bar area is small and cramped but would not be as bad if there were back rests on the stools. I usually come early to get a good seat.

Awesome european cuisine

By Alberto Alves |

Schilling was the best gastronomical surprise I had in NY. In a city known for the best and worst, this hidden jewel in the Finantial District is deffinitelly worth a visit. Beautifuly designed to detail, cosy, modern and respectfull for the genuine flavour with a touch of Austria from Chef Edi... what a great&talented guy!!! Enjoy, I did😀👏👏

More than just Austrian

By Warrick G |

I was at a small corporate function (table of 12) at Schilling. The restaurant was advertised as an Austrian restaurant but it is much more than that with a diverse and interesting menu that was generally pretty good. Sure there are some Austrian staples Weiner Schnitzel, Spatzle and Apple Strudel. The food was fairly tasty and the price was not too unreasonable. Definitely in the expected range. The service was fine without being excellent but this is something that is becoming a consistent experience on my current visit to New York. I used to really enjoy the extra service that was provided in the US but I am not sure what it is but they seem to expect the 20% tip rather than offer service that was superior to what is experienced elsewhere to justify it.

Good choice for dinner

By Donnmein |

We happened upon Schilling while staying at the nearby Marriott. It is quaint and and cozy, with a large opening to the sidewalk so it's somewhat "open air." Friendly service and interesting food selections.

Schilling offers a very nice dining experience with good food and service

By Walsung |

I recently had dinner at Schilling and had a very nice meal. The restaurant has a nice and stylish atmosphere, and was very comfortable. The entire front of the restaurant was open to the outside due to a large garage door that opened or will close (I'm assuming) depending on the weather. The limited menu is Austrian themed with a contemporary spin on it. The Wiener Schnitzel was really good as was the apple strudel. The service was also very friendly and super fast. I definitely can recommend Schilling for a nice dining experience.

Innovative Austrian food, good cocktails

By carolyninny |

The food at Schilling is really unique and well done, as are the cocktails, although the restaurant was a little more casual in feel than I expected. We had a reservation and were there on time but there was no table for us at that time other than at a communal table which wasn't what I wanted for a birthday dinner. That said, the server was very good and apologetic, set us up at the small bar while we waited for a table. I think it was maybe 10 or 15 minutes more. Because they handled it well, I was okay with it. But do note that it is a very small place and a lot of the seating is at communal tables. Now on to the cocktails and food which were unequivocally fantastic. We had the Jerry Thomas cocktail at the bar and the bartender did an excellent job creating this old school cocktail. He gave the history of it and why it was made the way it was, which was nice. The food, wow the food. Great menu, which isn't huge and I love that, because I would rather a moderate number of choices that are all fantastic. We started with the excellent ricotta crostini -get one of the crostini with your cocktails - they are very unique and not you normally get. I then had the bone marrow appetizer which quite frankly, I never order but it just seemed like a special dish that I couldn't get often and wow, it was indeed that great, and pretty large. Both marrow and a short ribby type meat. Fantastic. I was very glad I followed up with the vegetarian spaetzle after that, which was perfect. My husband had the schnitzel and he loved it, it had really nice sides. The Cherry strudel for desert was sublime. All food presentation was excellent. The server was really friendly and did a great job. I am almost never in that area(it's WAY downtown in the financial district right by the new Freedom Tower) so I don't know when I will get back, but hope to because the Austrian cuisine is pretty unique. I thought it was decently priced for the high quality for NYC.

Thanks for opening down here

By Noora K |

We need more restaurants like this down in FiDi, and this little gem of Austrian cuisine is perfectly satisfying. The fish dishes were great, but most amazingly I really loved the beef carpaccio. Great wine selection. I think the communal table is a bit weird although looks cool. If you are in the area, must visit.

Great experience!

By Trip827974 |

Great experience. Awesome atmosphere and remarkably generous portions. Reuben, the bartender, was absolutely fantastic!

Delicious food in a beautiful space

By TravlerFromNYC |

What a beautiful space with great food/service! We were there on a Friday night and the place was packed. I made reservations via OpenTable and I was seated as soon as I arrived. We had the hamachi crudo, a salad, pasta dish, and chicken - all were excellent and the drinks are also very nice and fairly priced

An exasperating experience because we loved the sandwich (Turkey Reuben w Fries) and the Kale Chick Pea stew but felt outraged by the tiny cup of soup (Not advertised as such) for $10 and the 2 inch by 2 inch apple strudel (The most niggardly portion of strudel in the history of mankind)....Were we disliked?...did the server put what was supposed to be a bowl of soup in a cup....and who cut the strudel?.....Won't be back-so heed this warning readers.

Wiener Schnitzel

What a pleasant find this restaurant was. Delicious food - particularly the Schnitzel and staff were efficient and friendly.

So good I almost didn’t want to share!

Attending a conference in lower Manhattan on a gloomy rainy evening, our business group of five did not know what to expect from Schilling. I had found the restaurant on Trip Advisor and it looked very interesting and convenient to the hotels in the area- Marriott, Fairfield and Wagner. The beer and the food were both so delicious I almost thought about not writing a review in order to keep it my special secret. The Kolsch and the IPA on draft were both extremely fresh and tasty. The small plates of grilled peach and framers cheese, and shrimp ajillo were excellent to share- first class ingredients and preparation. The star of the small plates for me was the Chicken Liver Mousse. I do not regularly partake in this type of dish but I am so pleased I did. I would definitely come back if only to enjoy the Mousse on crisp toast again. Main dishes of Tagliatelle, Hanger Steak, pan roasted halibut and Risotto were enjoyed by our party members but as a first time diner I simply had to try the Schnitzel. It was first class. Dessert of a Simple cheese plate capped off a great evening. The atmosphere was lovely in a rustic sense. Definitely make it a point to go.

Went to Schillings with a group from work on a week night. The restaurant itself is tiny but we sat outside and enjoyed some very nice Starters and Austrian Beer, in the Sun. The food is excellent - my Schnitzel was really good and some of the others’ dishes looked awesome. This place deserves to be much higher up in the rankings - great food and service…

Don’t Judge This Venue by the Outside—Wonderful Dinner!

Went to Schilling with a friend. I heard it was “fine” from a close relative. It was much MORE than “fine”. The food was exceptional, the wines (tried the Riesling and Barolo…lovely) terrific and the service by a couple of lovely ladies. They did not rush us out at all, as we hadn’t seen each other in a while. The Wiener Schnitzel was fried perfectly and was very light and tasty, and the spaetzle was in a light cream sauce and was decadent. We also got the white bean vinaigrette salad to start and the farmer’s cheese with rustic bread. I would highly recommend this place for couples or friends. I will be back!

Very near the down town Marriott. Wiener schnitzel was awesome and the crostini . Cute place nice menu Limited wine by the glass.

Cool place but it needs a few touches

The atmosphere is great. We stopped in just before 5pm for a drink and some appetizers. I understand this is a Austrian, German, Italian restaurant and as such they have imported wine but for the pallet of an American it would have been nice to have had US wines. Nothing close to a Chardonnay despite the insistence of the waiter. However he was nice about it and we opted for a bottle of a Sancerre white wine. The food was really tasty. We had beef carpaccio, artichoke with ham hocks, hamachi and focaccia bread. All were good. I asked about Wi-Fi and the waiter said they did have it and would bring me the password but when he came back the SSID did not show and the password he showed was ridiculously long! I was surprised that most NY places we visited didn't have customer access. This place needs to sort this out and the wine out for me to give a perfect rating.

Nice Find in a Neighborhood with Few Restaurants

We were on a walking tour around the World Trade Center and found ourselves on lower Washington Street. The front of Schilling seemed so welcoming that we went in. I think it is best described as nouvelle German cuisine, if there is such a thing. They brought a delicious bread with a hummus spread to start. We then ordered with the asparagus which was grilled perfectly with cheese adding great flavor. We also had the beautiful and delicious crostini with lightly shaved lemon, radish, a soft cheese and what I think was a parsley and oil drip. They have an excellent Weiner Schnitzel which one of my dining companions enjoyed. It comes with potato salad and cucumber salad. I had the young chicken which was moist and delicious and our other friend had the branzino which he also enjoyed very much. They have beer on tap for $7 and a range of wines at the usual too-high price for not a full glass. I would stick with the beer. The service was great - we felt comfortable and not rushed. A great find!

A good place for a good dinner

I was here casually for a dinner, and I was invited to enter this place cause of the right dimension and the right atmosphere. The food was also a good surprise, really tasty and well presented. I recommend to come here to everybody who will walk around lower Manhattan!

Nice little Austrian restaurant

The place is small but cosy. The selection of Austrian speciality is not huge, but their quality and the service top.You can seat in and outside

Perfect

Austrian comfort food and fantastic cocktails

We had dinner at the bar with weiner schnitzel and gimlets (Hey. Don't judge.) The bartender was wonderfully charming, and made the most amazing drinks. Our dinners were terrific and the drinks were the best either of us had had in years.

Quite Simply..... GREAT!!!!!!!!

For two nights at ate at Schilling….. very close to the World Center hotel and well worth it…. The chef is a Michelin star rated one… and the place reeks of an unbelievable culinary experience….. I had several great drinks and one night I had shoulder of goat!!! Just the best!!!!... My servers on both nights, Ksenia and Maeve, were out of this world…. Very knowledgeable and great personalities….one of the chefs came out to talk with me about the food and both of our experiences eating all over the world!!! This place is super eclectic and is loaded with ambiance!!! This is a must visit restaurant in the Financial district!!!!!

Just AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!

This place was recommended by my hotel staff!!.... it's about a 3 minute walk from the World Center Hotel.... this place is so indicative of the NYC restaurant scene!!!!! I think it was an Austrian restaurant and the food and service were so good!!!!! Let's get started with my server, Emilee!!!! She was absolutely the best!!!! I told her I was more of a New World wine drinker and she told me "Not tonight!!!! You should drink old world wines!!! She was absolutely right!!!! The wines they offered were exceptional and paired so well with my food offerings.... I started out with squash, recommended by Emilee and it was even better than she described. I had lamb with cous cous and it was so tender and delicious... I skipped the desserts because I'm a lifter and a runner and I don't need empty calories... but the dessert menu was great!!! Emilee is such a great ambassador for this place... she knows all the subtle nuances of the dishes and seemed so at home making recommendations.... I really trusted her!!!!...... and that's a great attribute of a great server!!!!!! I loved this place... so eclectic in its appeal and look!!!!!! All facets of this place turned out just super!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good lunch

Good lunch with family. Food was good, service was a little slow (seemed there was only one waiter). Wouldn't recommend if you're looking for a quick lunch, but definitely if you are willing to sit back and relax. W

Simply WOW. FIDI Gem!

By Brent H |

I recently got the pleasure of eating at Schilling Restaurant & Bar in the FIDI area of NYC. And I must say WOW. Such a good meal and restaurant vibe. I will definitely be going back very soon. We had an array of menu items and they were all spectacular. Thank you for the great experience at your restaurant.
