I have been to Sfoglia 5 or 6 times over the last couple of years. They never disappoint. This is clearly not your typical red sauce Italian restaurant. Excellent and very inventive. Try one of their homemade pastas. The wait staff is always attentive but not overly so. An atypical and interesting wine list. Reservations are a must, I typically wait 2-3 weeks for a table on weekends.

This is definitely one of the best and most interesting restaurants in New York. We have been there many times and have never been disappointed. Creative and ever changing menu, great bar and amazing service!

Although the front of the restaurant is overcrowded, the ambiance is lovely and you really feel like you are in a Tuscan home. We got the charred octopus, pappardelle bolognese and the chicken which were all excellent! The service was also very good. I will say that the restaurant is a bit noisy so might not be the best for an intimate dinner to catch up.

We ate at Sfoglia after reading a review in the Luxe guide. The food was outstanding, the best italian food I've ever had. If the chef hasn't yet got a michellin star he will surely have soon.

I just returned from Sfoglia and I think I need an IV to rehydrate. One of the key factors of a good restaurant is ambiance and the sauna like conditions ruined this for me. Although I understand air conditioners can have issues, it's how you deal with the problem that matters. I heard three different tables get three different answers as to why it was excruciating hot in the restaurant. And while the customers were scrambling for ice cubes, there were no apologizes and no offer of a free cocktail to cool down or a gesture of good will for the inconvenience. At these costs customers deserve better. That being said, the food was good. I started off with the mussels which were some of the best I ever had. It was about $19 for two dozen small mussels with great flavor. Although I found two which were closed and I had to discard, the rest were excellent. Next came the bread which was as good as people claim. The fresh pasta with Bolognese sauce was very good and you could tell it was handmade. Finally I had their famous chicken that gets a perfect crisp using a heated brick to seal in the flavor. Unfortunately I didn't even finish this entrée due to the temperature in the restaurant getting too hot and spoiling my appetite. Sfoglia has a talented chef which can produce some excellent food. But it's hard to enjoy the food when the room is 85+ degrees and you want to pour ice water down your shirt. It was so hot I didn't finish my chicken and sadly had to skip out on dessert. I watched people walk out and no one was offered anything for this inconvenience. At $175 for two people for dinner I expected more. To be a top tier 5-star restaurant they definitely need to work on their ambience. It's sad when such a talented chef doesn't have the right environment.

I was impressed with the food. The chicken under a brick is delicious, moist and tender, with an amazing zesty lemon and light olive oil marinade. The Bolognese sauce is also very hearty and filling on their homemade pasta. But... the service was standard, somewhat slow, and we are very forgiving when a place is crowded and other customers are demanding. The prices were very high... over $500 for four people. Yes, we had wine and appetizers and we are accustomed to New York prices... But that is insane, really for chicken and pasta- typically the lower priced items on a menu. I'm glad we tried Sfoglia... but there are many more good homey, delicious Italian restaurants out there.

Went here for my cousins graduation dinner with my family. Party of 9. We got offered the private dining area upstairs and it was lovely. Had its own music and its own bathroom!!! The service and food were great. They made us feel very special.

We had been told how wonderful this restaurant was and tried to get in unsuccessfully on 2 occasions. A few weeks ago on a Saturday evening we just took a chance on getting in after being told there were no reservations. By the way, it is almost impossible to get a real person on the phone and their voicemail always seems to be "full". The menu was extremely limited and they did not have the whole fish that we came for. The waiter told us they were short on bread and there would be no seconds (the bread was the best part of the meal!). My appetizer, a cannelloni, was swimming in cream and bland and my husband's smoked trout did not taste fresh. There were no tablecloths which we had expected in such a pricey place. Wines were very high so my husband just had a beer and we had no dessert but the bill was still well over $100. STAY AWAY!

This was my first time at Sfoglia, and I will definitely be going back. Friendly service and excellent food made for a fantastic evening with family. I had the special pasta, which was a farro pasta with tomato sauce, pepper, and a walnut pesto. Delicious.

Sfoglia offers a good selection of entrees that are well prepared and presented. Very attentive and pleasant service in a warm atmosphere. As a footnote their bread is some of the best I have had.

We made a reservation for four people. Two weeks in advance the only time available on Opentable was 6pm, so we were excited to be visiting such a hotly sought after restaurant. Maybe the problem was one of expectation inflation given all the hype on Yelp, NYTimes, etc... but we were not thrilled with the experience. We arrived promptly at 6. The person walking us to our table informed us that there is another party that reserved the table at 7:45. Really?? At a restaurant with $30+ entrees we don't even get two hours for dinner? The host then explained that their wine supplier was coming in from out of town and requested the table specifically - as if that should make us feel better? Definitely not cool. Anyway, as for the food - meh about summarizes it, considering the high price point. The home-made pasta itself was certainly great, but the preparation was uninspired. I had the "stracci" pasta with a lemon and poppy sauce that was different but not impressively flavored. The calamari seemed fresh, but the pistacchio puree they served with it tasted mostly like butter. I also tried the chicken, which was flavorful but too dry/overcooked, and another member of my party made the same comment about the scallops. Wine selection was small but good, I had a nice Valpolicella. Too bad, we really wanted to like this place.

Recommendation at Kitchen Arts and Letters led us to this small place. We snuck in under closing time for lunch. Our salads were wonderful with the best croutons ever. Our pastas dishes were so flavorful. I had the oxtail with zucchini cubes just cooked and fresh celery leaves. It tasted like a classical ragu with fresh elements. I love learning something new at a restaurant. My husband thought his bolognese tasted like it had game like we make, but better. The server recommended wines that were spot on.

One of the best spots on the Upper East Side. It's always a great dinner at Sfoglia. Service can be a bit pretentious but not always. The bread is to die for and the food is always fresh and hearty.

Sfoglia brings together the best of traditional Italian food with inventive dishes plated so attractively you hesitate before taking the first bite. Then it's a heavenly treat, paired with excellent wine options. The decor and ambience are unique and elegant while being unstuffy. The menu is continually revised to reflect the best of what the season has to offer, making for wonderful gnocchi- and orecchiette-based dishes.

I need to go bace to fully evaluate this restaurant. The service was excellent as was the abbience. However the food needs another look. The pasta was overcooked and the Chard was undercooked, while the dessert was just taken out of the refridgerator and served too cold. We were the only partyin the restaurant for lunch, and this shows either poor kitchen management ofr indifference. I want to go back and see how they handle a full house.

My wife and I are here last week and around going back again this week. Loved the food, the atmosphere and the service. It is a little pricey but worth it. We are now regulars.

This is a small, popular restaurant that you probably need reservations. They will serve a full meal at the bar and the bartender is excellent. If you are going to one of the wonderful programs at the Y this is the perfect place to eat. My pasta was excellent and reasonable.

We were there on Fathers Day. Food was excellent, creative, service was friendly and informative although the server could have done a better job explaining the offerings since it was our first visit. Overall , we had a great meal in a creative and welcoming location. Note: AC was minimal and it seemed cooler in the back room. Front room was stuffy....they really need to fix this. would not want to be there in Mid August.,...

Sfoglia offers excellent food in an authentic Italian atmosphere. They serve excellent Italian wine (try the northern regions) to accompany great italian dishes. The atmosphere is relaxed, you'll feel at home in this place. Great place for an evening on the town.

A nice downtown feeling for an upper east side restaurant. Food is ok, not great, service is friendly.

Sfoglia is a hidden gem on the upper east side (it's really hidden as you can't see it's awning right away). It is small and very hard to get a reservation. Arguably the top Italian restaurant in NYC. Everything is house made. Even the pasta. The dishes are unique yet still very mainstream in their ingredient choice. The service makes you feel like you are in your own home. 5 stars for Sfoglia!

I had two dinners here three weeks apart this summer. The first, a party of two, was SUBLIME. Every aspect -- the service, the wine recommendations, the flawless food -- were perfection. Each ingredients is the finest, including the divine bread made in house, the fruity dipping olive oil -- all excellent. We enjoyed the antipasti de la casa, an impeccable filet of sea bass, and a summer fusilli pasta that simply tasted of summer -- corn, lemon, basil, mascarpone, with perfectly al dente pasta, each ingredient singing. On the strength of this meal I returned with a larger party of four. Neither the execution nor the service were as top-notch. It took me most of my meal to get my second glass of wine (though I reminded the server at least twice about it.) The superb bread was never replenished though we asked that it be. And most surprisingly the fusilli dish that was so impeccable a month earlier was mushy and not nearly as distinctive -- very little evidence of corn nor lemon this time, mainly tasting like a generic pesto dish. It almost tasted like a different recipe. And the famed mixed antipasti, so good last time -- which granted a customer knows will rotate and change from day to day -- had markedly inferior ingredients at the second visit, including a bland quinoa dish which felt out of place at a Tuscan restaurant, and a salad choice that was spiky, unwieldy bitter greens (dandelion?) that were hard to eat and not particularly exciting. The famed chicken under a brick is as good as it gets -- though warning that it is dripping in butter and olive oil for those who are more abstemious about cooking fats -- and the fish selections still fresh and superb. At this price point it would be nice to see more consistency at this beautiful restaurant, which clearly has a talented kitchen. The space is lovely, with a welcoming L-shaped bar where couples or singles could easily have an excellent bite and glass of wine. Had I to rate the restaurant based on my earlier summer meal it would easily get five starts but after the second visit I'll have to demote it to four. Still, we will return to give them another try. It is definitely one of the best options in the neighborhood for fine Italian food.

Despite the somewhat limited Ital-menu, this cozy place was fun and buzzing. Limited but ok wine-list. Food was tasty although the bolognese needed more tomato tang, at least to my liking. Staff was very accommodating and attentive. A good local for upper east-siders.

We managed to turn up and get a table at 7pm. The atmosphere, food, service and value were all wonderful! I cannot recommend this little restaurant highly enough! Go, you won't be disappointed. It's on my list for when I'm back in NYC

We ate here before attending an event at the 92nd Y across the street and it was superb. The bolognese sauce was to die for and the service was impeccable. It is a bit pricey but great service and energetic vibe!

Over time Sfoglia has become one of my favorite restaurants! Their bolognese sauce is delicious and I am always satisfied after my meal.

Excellent for a nice dinner

There is no doubt whatsoever that the food at this restaurant is excellent. We had a wonderful meal. I had the crispy octopus with fennel, lentils and a spicey parsley puree, followed by Sfolgia's signature chicken alla mattone, both were delicious. My wife enjoyed her clams with soppressata picante and the other couple shared the papardelle alla Bolognese along with the chicken alla mattone. Neither the antipasti or the secondi were inexpensive, but this is not unexpected in New York City. The wine list is quite good, but the red wines available are unusually expensive even for a New York restaurant. In contrast the white wines were not unreasonably priced. The atmosphere of the restaurant is very nice and the sound level was quite low for a New York restaurant so that you could carry on a conversation comfortably. I noted that some reviewers commented that the restaurant reminded them of restaurants in Italy. This was not the case for us since our waiter could not properly pronounce the name of virtually any of the Italian dishes or properly pronounce the names of the wines. While this is a minor point, if the restaurant wants to have an Italian ambience, some language education for its waiters is in order. Nonetheless, the service was excellent. Al ristorante Sfoglia, abbiamo mangiato bene (Translation:At Sfoglia restaurant we ate well), but we certainly knew that we were not back in Italy.

Well....this is why conversations with locals in bars has has its benefits. After hearing rave comments about Spoglia from a Boston native now who lives on the Upper East Side, we decided to work a lunch there into our schedule. And we're we glad we did! This is a "blink and you miss it" spot on the NW corner of 92nd and Lexington. From the moment we were greeted at the door, we were treated like regulars by a very friendly and knowledgeable staff. They have a nice selection of wines, beers, and cocktails. The pace was unhurried despite the gathering patrons on a Sunday afternoon. As regard the food, spectacular! Pappardelle bolognese was unbelievably delicious; the toothsome house made noodles were as good as you'd find in Italy. A special panino with pancetta, Gruyere, and cipollini onions was perfectly grilled. And the starter of butternut squash soup was perfect. If I lived anywhere within a 10 block radius of Spoglia, it would likely become a weekend standby!! We ate in some really nice spots during our NYC weekend, including restaurants with higher Trip advisor ranking for NYC. But we'd have to say a that Sfoglia was the most memorable meal of the trip. I doubt I'll come to the city in the future without a stop here.

We were encouraged to go here by some friends who come to NYC several times a year and makes this a regular stop. The food was terrific and we really liked the look of the place. They sat us downstairs and we liked the feel of the lower ceiling. The wait staff is attentive. They do a great job of reviewing the selections and how they are prepared. We almost missed the door as we arrived in a taxi. They have some scaffolding up on the exterior and in the dark evening light we could not easily see it was a restaurant as we approached from the west on 92nd. The location is more easily noticed as you come south on Lexington.

Nearly a decade ago, when this lovely restaurant first appeared in New York, the reviews glowed and crowds descended. Yet, now that some years have gone by, it remains better than ever, despite going largely unnoticed by most New Yorkers, not to mention their out of town guests. One need only study the antipasti, which change every day, or the ever-evolving pastas, whose considerable originality is only matched by their quality, to be convinced about why many who know Italian cooking deem it the best of the genre outside of Italy. Thinking upon the further delights of the cozy dining room (the freshly baked bread, the seasonal fruit tarts baked to order), one can only conclude that this is one of those astonishing New York restaurants that does just fine (thank you very much) by way of its regular clientele, while it eschews the title it would otherwise claim by right, that of the destination restaurant. If Sfoglia had its seat downtown, it would today be on the Pellegrino List. As it is, Sfoglia is happy to be the best Italian restaurant in the world that you have never heard of.

Having really enjoyed Sfoglia in the past, I was really disappointed by the meal we had there this past weekend. Three strikes: 1) sour olive oil; 2) bitter broccoli rabe; 3) pickled baby carrots. Translation: YUCK!!! 1) Sfoglia has delicious house-made bread, which is a great opener for its many wonderful dishes -- so to provide olive oil to accompany it that is more like eating an unripe olive off a tree -- with its sour, acrid, screw-up your palette tannins -- is just criminal. Not to mention it ruins your ability to appreciate your wine selection -- strike one! 2) With Sfoglia's delicious signature chicken, nothing goes better than a side of broccoli rabe -- unless they fail to cook it properly and blanche it, so that it loses its bitterness; ours was super bitter, essentially inedible -- aargh -- strike two! 3) With delicious lamb chops, one wants to juxtapose a light fresh root vegetable. To have beautiful baby carrots overwhelmed with vinegar, having been pickled, was a complete cop-out -- strike three!

After trying their other restaurant in Nantucket I felt compelled to visit their sister location on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Boy was I disappointed. We were seated 90 minutes late despite a reservation and the staff seemed extremely disorganized an were "running around like chickens without heads". The food itself took forever to prepare (and we will wait a long time and are patient diners) and once it arrived it was a disappointment. I am not one to use salt/peper but not only did the food need tons of seasoning the quality of the ingredents used was not premium (in my opinion). Chicken was tough, spinish was watery and tateless, carrots were mushy and tasted like home made baby food.

My partner and I went to Sfoglia on our visit to NY and were really disappointed. The restsurant itself and the ambience is terrific...but it definitely stopped there for us. None of the dishes came close to satisfactory. I had a chicken dish...and I mean the dish only comprised two pieces if chicken, one piece of which was undercooked!!! The wine was like a good quality vinegar and the dessert was quite dusgusting. The service was completely pretentious and neither the food nor the service bore any resemlence to anything Italian. I don't normally bother writing reviews, but felt it was important to warn others not to waste their money and their time going there. Just around the corner on 92nd, there's a terrific little restaurant that people should consider...

Great restaurant with very good food. Selection is limited but every entrée for our table of 4 was served to perfection

We went as a family of 5 to this most elegant Upper East Side dining venue. Its so pleasant and warm, a wonderful spot. Transported right to rustic Italy. We shared several starters for the table, including : an antipasti selection, olives, kale salad, cheese and bread. Each was delightful. A range of mains included three types of tasty pasta, chicken al mattone and lamb osso bucco. We pre ordered 2 desserts - a superb apple tart with ice cream and a nightly special. Our entire family thinks Sfoglia is the best of all the 4 local spots we visited over the holiday season. Costly - but worth it for ambiance, service, cuisine. I do not believe they are open for lunch. Reservations for tables is a MUST, but it's possible to dine seated at the bar as the evening progresses.

Sunday night dinner for 2 with a bottle of wine cost $200. The staff could not wait to drum us out and in the process spilt my wine. Food was ho hum. Antipasti was tasty but their signature chicken was served without vegetables and too much oil. The pastry on the pear tart was burnt and unpleasant. There are better places to spend your money

This restaurant has several excellent options for vegetarians. The ambiance, food and service are all excellent.

Sfoglia has one of my favorite wines, Montefalco Sagrantino by Antonelli! We enjoyed wonderful Antipasti. The Pappardelle alla Bolognese was perfect as was the special Skate. The location at 92 and Lexington was not perfect on a very hot rainy August evening, but well worth the trip. Eight of us had a very enjoyable meal. Lots of wonderful Great Primi and Secondi along with Contorni. New York City prices!

Loved it. My sea bass was perfect with light tomato favors. Best fish I can remember in awhile. Food was a bit slow to come out but service was very goo (server seemed pushy to take our order but I gathered later that this was because he knew the kitchen was slow). But a great spot and cool rooms. Never an empty water glass or want of anything.

When we first walked in, we felt as though we were dining at a friends house. The staff were friendly. The restaurant was not very crowded which was nice. The tables were close to eachother which would have made it a bit uncomfortable. We had heard about the bread in the restaurant as well as the chicken dish. Several people near us were served the chicken and it did look and smell great, so this was what we ordered. Shortly after our starter, we noticed it began to get warm in the restaurant and saw other diners talking about it as well. By the time our chicken had arrived it was very warm inside and all we were thinking ab9out was finishing our food. The chicken was good, but it was so warm in the restaurant we could honestly not think about the food and all we thought about what the heat as it got warmer and warmer. One table was told the AC was not working all day, we were told it had been working sporadically. Several diners actually left when entering because it was so hot. By the time we finished our chicken all we could think about was leaving. They asked us if we wanted to have more cocktails, but all we wanted was to leave. They also asked us about dessert and this also was not to be on the menu for us. At no time did any staff as if we wanted something on the house to make up for the extreme heat, not that they are obligated to do so, but it would have made this terrible situation a bit better. The portion of chicken was small but tasted good. Some of the guests were sweating profusely, especially a gentlemen with a shaved head. In the short time we saw him there before leaving, he had been up to complain several times. I understand that the ac breaking is not the restaurants fault, but they did nothing to make us feel a bit better about it. It was very hot and humid out this day, but stepping outside actually felt like a breath of fresh air. I am a big eater, and the chicken portion was pretty small for me. I started off with a salad which was very good. We moved on to the pasta with Bolognese sauce which was excellent. After this was their signature chicken dish which lived up to it's popularity. By the time we finished dining on the chicken we asked for the check and left. A restaurant can make up for a bad situation in the way they handle it. In this case, they way they handled it was us, and apparently others, did not make us feel very special.

Had passed by the this place on trips to NYC but had never gone in. The main part of the restaurant is tucked away a bit but it's a lovely little spot. Snug, cozy. I was STARVING not having eaten much of anything on my travel day and I had a nice salad with greens, chickpeas and a yogurt dressing. Nothing fancy but satisfying. Then I treated myself to an absolutely caloric splurge and ordered pasta with peas, bacon and tarragon in a cream sauce that was divine! Totally hit the spot. We went to another place our last night there and we probably should have gone back here.

Our first time there and we were pleasantly surprised by the casual ambiance, terrific service and wonderful food. I had soup then chicken and loved it. Our friends shared a few desserts and they said they were great. After we finished we noticed that there is a back room that was particularly nice for large groups. We will be back

We took a booking for 6:45 on Open Table because nothing later was available. We went and by 8:00 pm the restaurant was deserted. Moral of the story - call the restaurant to book. Their wine list is very pricey with the least expensive wine at $ 85. Two of us ordered one of the signature dishes - a roast chicken. It was dry despite floating in a pool of grease.

We have been here a dozen times, or more. Why so many times to a three dot restaurant? Because it is across the street from the 92nd Streeet Y, and there is really nothing else in the hood. The reception is warm, and they try to be as accomodating as they can, considering the odds. The room is small, and the tables, like the china, and the decorative appointments, are all thrift shoppy, and not versatile (so, easily uncomfortable...you very well might find yourself sharing a table with strangers). The bar is actually THE PLACE to sit. The wine list is limited, but with very good selections starting at $60. The menu is also limited to about five apps, five pastas, and five main courses. Though I have had most things on the menu, anymore I tend to have the same things, because not everything is created equally good. The food is genreally tasty, but nothing has ever had a WOW factor. The best selections here are definitely the pastas, which can be extremely good, but, as I said, never GREAT. Ther service is very efficient and friendly, but VERY relaxed (in a not so good way...you can be forgotten here). Overall, this is a charming place, with solid food, but for the $100 per person you should expect to pay, you could jump in a cab, and find better.

The ambiance was very nice and the wait staff was excellent- friendly, helpful and answered all of our questions. We had the buratta appetizer, bolognese pasta and the chicken and they were all wonderful. Make sure you get the Brussels sprout side, it was amazing! And the pear torte was Devine. Highly recommend

We were lucky to reserve a table a couple of weeks before our trip to NY . WE are so glad we did , The food was fantastic , the service friendly and it is lovely cosy setting. Would definitely recommend.

Food & service excellent. Chicken dish is a favorite.pasta cooked al debate with nice selection. Beautiful salads & delicious warm apple pie dessert with ice cream!

Always perfect or close to it. Calm and clever atmosphere with subtle menu to match. After many many visits, I still love this gem.

The chicken cooked under a brick was excellent and the pasta tasted like candy.

Don't miss this delightful restaurant, even if it requires reservations weeks ahead. The chicken is amazing, and the pastas are delicious. Also the desserts are special so leave room!

We made reservation on opentable on the recommendation of a friend. We arrived and were seated at a long family style table with a family of 4 at the other end. Not what we expected for a date night, but we are parents and not too fussy about being with kids in restaurants. We started with delicious cocktails. I had the oysters to start, shared the gnocchi with my husband and ended with the salmon. I probably should have skipped the gnocchi (or the delectable crusty bread) because I was too full to finish my salmon. Overall this was a delightful outing. Would return for sure.

Italian restaurants are one of those that I usually don't get too excited about. But let me say that I had the best Italian dinner, ever, at Sfoglia. That's bad for the next Italian restaurants I go to, but that just means i'll have to go back to NYC and Sfoglia again. Everything was amazing. The cocktails, the wine, the appetizers all set the tone. Then the dinners come out! The duck was crispy and so full of flavor. The ravioli was succulent and rich. The bolognaise was classic and sumptuous. And then who thought a vanilla ice cream sunday could be so good. The whole evening was spectacular. Stephanie at the Bar is one of a kind! We will definitely be back when we can!

We've been here many times. It is not inexpensive, but what is the value to always be completely satified. The best seats can be at the bar. The staff is very accommodating and the portions good. The bartenders can make you anything you want and the liquors are top shelf.Desserts are sublime and two can usually share.

Great Italian Restaurant in UES! Always pass by here and decided to give it a try! Food are hit or missed! Location: It is located at UES, lexington Ave. We made reservations cause it is always packed here! There is outdoor and indoor seating! The indoor is nice, quite dark. The outdoor is nice, feels like you are in Italy. Street parking available at the side Service: OMG our server is nice. I noticed that she is in the elderly side, and I love that, it means that the restaurant does not discriminate! Thank you for that. Food: Food here is hit or missed! BURRATA: this was my first Burrata and it was delicious!! Omg! There are green peas on it and the burrata is so silky. SFOGLIA CAESAR: the best caesar salad I had in my life! It was perfect! Not too much or too less of the dressing and I love the anchovies on it! CURED ITALIAN MEATS: this is good as well, different types of meat with a good bread sticks! PAPPARDELE: good, taste like deconstructed lasagna! FETTUCCINI: best fettuccine that I ate, the cream and chunks of ham is good, the pasta was al dente! SAFFRON RISOTTO: the risotto was cooked well, didn’t got that much of the crab tho. SFOGLIA’S CHICKEN AL MATTONE: they said this was very popular but it was okay for me, it is like fried chicken with lemon on it. It was okay. BONE IN VEAL CHOP: another one that was okay. Expensive but it was just fried with a side of salad, nothing special for me. STRAWBERRY RHUBARB TORTA: omg this was good! The crust was so good and the filling was not that sweet which I like! The ice cream binds it together, the thing is you have to preorder this so order it on the beginning! Price rating: 9/10, quite expensive to be honest but if you buy what I recommend you will be fine. Will probably come back here for the Caesar salad, buratta, fettuccini and the strawberry rhubarb torta! 2 orders each!! Lol

Every dish was so exacting and of such high quality, it was so much better than I ever expected or that it needed to be. Sfoglia is worth traveling to in New York, a city with so many ordinary Italian restos. The wine list is chosen with love and the the sommelier can make great suggestions.

Everything we ate & drank was superior, but the Sfoglia’s pappardelle alla Bolognese is truly for the gods. Our waitperson, Melissa, said that many customers come back week after week simply to have a plate of the pappardelle alla Bolognese. If I lived in NYC, I would be among them!! A great, unpretentious place, reasonably priced, friendly staff and wonderful food.

Sfoglia has really good Italian food. The surroundings are characterized by mismatched furniture and quirky decor. The servers are sophisticated, thoroughly modern and rather friendly. They handle large groups well and while the bill can be substantial, the food is excellent.

Went here for a business dinner with friends when in town from LA; the food was superb. The brick chicken was truly amazing, as was the pasta. The wine, bread, everything; really superb. The only thing that was close to a bummer was the noise level; we were seated (even with a reservation), in what I would call the "lower back room" - it had a very low ceiling and was full - and full of really loud groups and couples. When we left, we walked through the main dining room again, and it was like a different restaurant; quiet groups that we wish we had been a part of. If and when we go back, and I'm sure we will, we'll ask for the main room up front with the high ceilings - and relative quiet so we can actually have a conversation while we enjoy our food.

I had a dinner with my wife. We were warmly welcomed by the owner or manager. The inside of the restaurant was a bit dark, which was a good atmosphere for us. We ordered assortment of appetizer, grilled salmon, and squid ink risotto. The The appetizer was almost vegetables, and this was not tasty for us. The king salmon itself was delicious for its rich fat, but the side vegetable must have been spinach instead of the served green vegetable. The risotto were more delicious if there were not the pieces of vegetable, maybe, celery. The meals seemed creative Italian but I am afraid that we did not like the tastes. The servers were friendly and we were comfortable for the services and the atmosphere of the restaurant, but the tastes were below our expectation.

Food was very good --not extraordinary --and I loved the dark, quiet ambience. But the least expensive bottle of wine ran $60, and most shocking of all was they charged $8.50 for still water that almost certainly came from the tap. When a dinner for two runs about $220 including tip, I found that price gouging of the worst kind. Buyer beware.

I really loved this place, the people who work there make you feel like home, and the food is so delicious, I went for New Year with my family and had a independent saloon, It was lovely.

Mediocre food and way overpriced. This place wouldn't survive in a more competitive neighborhood. Clam appetizer was tasteless and cavatelli main was ok but nothing special. Go elsewhere.

Everything about this restaurant is 5 star, from the greeting when we arrived to to unpretentious, neighborly and sophisticated treatment. Once we ordered the wine the dangerously tempting, warm delicious bread arrived. I am not a bread eater, but from the first crunch of the crust there was no going back. I knew the meal was going to be a delight. When the menu arrived, I was seduced by the description of the flatbread, and indeed it was equally as pleasurable to eat as the description. As it was our first time here, we each ordered the chicken, which is a specialty of the house, the chicken, and one again all diets were off, it was too delicious not to finish. Who eats desert? wWl there was wine left in the bottle, so we decided to split one. Umm hum. Sfoglia is a joy because it is comfortable, unpretentious, delicious and the staff is fun, while never intrusive.

This place is an expensive, pretentious joke. Inferior food - doesn't matter what you order; nothing is noteworthy. Wine served in jelly glasses - please! - although that does suit the quality of the wine. Dim lighting, curtained secluded interior, as if to hide big-time celebrities fom prying eyes. Lots of old, made man" looking types with Jersey Shore-looking babes. If this is your idea of class and Italian food, chow down. Bring the Tums for the after effects of the meal and the tab.

the nantucket original was delicious.

outstanding!

Our family had made reservations for my wife's birthday here. We dined in the private dining room upstairs and it was an amazing experience. Our waiter was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about the food and was willing to help us w/ our needs (food allergies). The food was fresh and unbelievably delicious. Freshly made pasta is an experience like no other and the pairings of anitpasto/cheese/meats made of a memorable gastrointestinal delight!! I will be bring more family back in the near future!

Sfoglia over the past year had been one of our favorite restaurants; we patiently played the 'game' of making reservations one month in advance and always were given the early seating...no matter how early we e-mailed or called wanting something later than 6:00 PM...but we always enjoyed our meals ... until recently....sadly, the restaurant has changed and become chaotic (an understatement) on several occasions we had to wait an inordinate amount of time for the food (even missing an engagement later in the evening) the waiters could have cared less about our plight and kept saying...'just a few more minutes' - it took one hour to get soup!!!!!!!!FINALLY when the food was delivered..on two occasions it was dreadful !!!!!!! one meal being so bad that we wrote a letter to the chef/owner explaining how we were ill after eating at his establishment...the soup was overly salted to the point we could not get enough water for the rest of the evening to quench our thirst...the chicken was greasy and the pasta dish was over done and lacked flavor. we NEVER received an acknowledgement to our letter....also, on these occasions the chef was 'manning' the reservations...he belonged in the kitchen!!!! it is a shame to see a restaurant which was once very good and innovative become a lackluster, chaotic, pedestrian food mess. we never returned ... and never will... carefully check the menu...some of the combinations just do not 'work' you can be innovative but you must be assured you follow thru with the seasonings and the cooking...to end oN a favorable note...the bread is fantastic...the olives of excellent quality and plentiful and in the winter months the bread pudding...the BEST!

Very mediocre experience considering price and reputation. Service was slow, loud inappropriate music - a restaurant this size does not need background music as it is very noisy to start with. Food was uninspiring & expensive. There are far better Italian restaurants to dine in NY - would not reccomend.

We had heard so much about this restaurant and went with great expectations. Unfortunately we were all disappointed with the food , especially at this price point With its great location right across from the 92 St Y it has a built in clientele and the staff does do a good job of getting you out in time for a program. The problem is there is nothing special about the food and most everything is extra. I believe it was $9 for a vegetable side dish as nothing came with the entree Wines were also expensive by the glass and not very large pours We didn’t have time for desert

Sfoglia is a small, noisy restaruant where it's tough to get a reservation, although the reason for that is not clear. The food is mediocre - at best. A clam appetizer was unappetizing. A couple of fish dishes were overcooked, but a little better than the clams. The chicken was OK. The steak was what you can make at home. The prices were high - even for NYC. The service was erratic at best. So, maybe it's crowded because there are not many other places in the neighborhood, because anywhere else in the City it would be among the last choices for Italian or Continental dining.

Make reservations ahead if time otherwise you get a. 530 or 10. Very special date night or birthday meal type place. Dark and rustic ambience. Excellent rich Tuscan influenced food.

Received a gift certificate during a recent visit to NY…reservations seem hard to come by, we opted for a 5:45 res since it was all that was available. The restaurant isn't huge, with a small bar and 6-8 tables in the main room, and a second room we didn't really see. Service was attentive and friendly - once seated, our server took lots of time to explain the menu after learning it was our first visit. We enjoyed a good antipasti plate and their excellent bread before sampling two pasta dishes - homemade pasta was excellent. The bolognese (one of the signature dishes) was rustic, simple and delicious. The server recommended red wines to go with our dishes that were spot-on. For dessert, tried the order-in-advance apple cake…also excellent. Closed the evening off with espresso and tea. Overall atmosphere was pleasant, curtains along Lexington Ave make it feel secluded and cozy. Overall, a nice dining experience. It's pricier, and buzzing with what seemed to be a neighbourhood upper east side crowd, many of whom seemed to be dining early before heading to the 92nd Street Y for one of their speaker events.

The night before we arrived in NYC I called on a whim to get a table knowing my chances were slim. By liuck they just had a cancellation for 2 seats at the bar. I took it and we had a great dinner. We shared the antipasti casa fo $20 that included a great mix of cheeses and meats. We then followed that with a 1/2 portion of Orecchiette pasta and then their house special Chicken Al Mattne. Both dishes hit a home run. WE had a nice bottle of Vermentino for $45 and enjoyed the meal. The service at the bar was very good and the bartneder was a really friendly guy who was not intrusive. The bar sits only 8 people so it isn't a zoo and they don't have people standing and waiting for a table leering behind you. The bar is for eating and drinking not just drinking. It was great ant the place is a real find...go if you can get in

Very cozy Italian restaurant with a short menu. Our dinner was fine, had two salads and meatballs for starters, two pastas and scallops for mains and shared an apple tart for dessert. No standouts. Service was fine. In this price range, I would recommend going somewhere else.

Very nice atmosphere, good service, good food, comprehensive wine list. A restaurant I will return to.

Its hands down my favorite italian food in the city. The ambiance of the restaurant is rustic, small and cozy. Its great for a date or a small group of friends as its perfect for conversation. The food is mouthwateringly delicious and the menu is super creative mixed in alongside classic dishes. I think between the four of us we ordered everything on the menu just to try as many items as possbile. Not a single dissapointment. I cant wait to go back. Make reservations!!!

Dining at Sfoglia is a return to the day when neighborhood restaurants had the best food in the city. This wonderful restaurant, with a simple, expertly presented and prepared menu and wine list is easily a five star. And not just a Trip Advisor five star - Sfoglia has the best pasta in the city, on par with the pasta bar at Eataly. I had a pappardelle with a Bolognese ragu, perfectly prepared. After a Caesar -- they call it their Romaine salad - with some serious garlic and large anchovies I passed on to my hosts for the evening. I had a very good Montelpuciano, sadly priced as all others in New York. And topped it off with a very nice Capuccino. I was a guest so I did not see the bill but the entre size for the pappardelle was $30; the wine $15 a glass; the salad in the teens. Expensive in Cedar Rapids, not so much in New York. The service matched the food. I arrived early, chatted up the bartender, who knew his wines and his whiskies and for a rather small restaurant there was an acceptable selection of both. If you find yourself asking is it worth going out of the way to eat at Sfogila, it is a couple of blocks from a stop on the subway and if you get really lucky, maybe you can catch an event at the 92nd Street YMCA, a legendary venue.

When sfoglia first opened it was impossible to get into and had amazing food. They expanded and now there’s more seating. We had a few bad meals in the past year but maybe chef was off. Will try it again. The menu is limited and food is heavy. Winter dinner type food. Good service and pretty rustic decor.

Fantastic meal. Too bad reservations are so hard to come by.

love lunch love dinner

Read about this restaurant in a Wall Street Journal piece earlier in the year. The columnist was writing about his passion for Bolognese sauce. He mentioned this as having the best in NYC. Since this is my wife's favorite, we needed to try it. The Bolognese sauce was very different than we are used to. It was on the dry side. The rest of the meal was very good. Bread, always an important piece of a good dining experience was excellent. My beet salad was one of the best I ever had. The best dish in the house is the "chicken under a brick". It might be the best chicken I have ever had. Simply prepared and baked under a brick for one hour. The outside was lightly crispy and the chichen meat was tender and juicy. The lady sitting at the next table ordered it as well. She told me she had first had it about a month earlier and has been back three times since to have it again each time. Dessert was very good a sampling of home made gelatos. The seating is limited and you will need reservations. Clearly a local place for that neighborhood. The decor is rustic farmhouse tuscan. The tables are real farmers tables and the settings are period pieces. I will be back.

If you'r contemplating an evening in the area of the 92nd Street Y Sfoglia is a restaurant you should be aware of. Normally in a restaurant your concern is about the food, right? Here, the food is good, not great, but good, but I found the seating very uncomfortable and a distraction to the meal. I thought the chairs were very upright and very uncomfortable and the table was small for a party of four and your knees are in constant contact with the legs of the table. Not the end of the world you say. Agreed, but why should you be uncomfortable in a restaurant--especially one in New York City where there is no shortage of places to dine? Keep the chef, fire the interior designer!

It’s intimate it’s neighborhood it’s friendly and it’s perfectly delicious! I️ go there as often as I️ can and they never disappoint!

Just like my nonna's!!! Authentic Italian food at its best. If I lived in New York this would be a restaurant that I would frequent. I will return every time I am in town. After living in Italy I understand the cuisine. Sfoglia's food was just what I was looking for. One of the best Italian restaurants in the country...hands down.

This place is near my apartment and I've always had a tough time getting a spot here but finally a late dinner got us here. We ordered 3 pastas to share: the lamb gnocchi was definitely the highlight; spaghetti was good and orechiette was fine. Good backup spot near my area but probably won't come back since there're other places I'd like to try. Still highly recommended; nice romantic cozy ambience and good service.

This restaurant is overpriced and the food was mediocre at best. My dish was a sloppy mess of virtually inedible spaghetti, for which we waited 15 minutes (with no apology) and my husband’s dish was disappointing. The waiter was nonchalant and, like us, clearly wished he was elsewhere. Don’t waste your time, energy or money - you can get much better food for far less elsewhere - and have an enjoyable experience rather than a disappointing one.

My partner and I had dinner here on a recent trip to NYC, and had a great experience here. It is a small and cozy place, with tables spaced pretty close to one another. Cocktails were well made and the server's pacing of our meal was perfect. We ended up splitting an appetizer, salad, and the chicken, which was perfect, as they are generous portions. The burrata and radish appetizer was our favorite. The chicken was amazing as well, and cooked perfectly ( we usually don't order chicken out since it can be done badly), but this is a house specialty and it didn't disappoint! I felt the price point was good for the food and the wine. We paid $180.00 total, for 2 cocktails, an appetizer, salad, chicken, a side and a bottle of wine. It was one of our favorite meals during our 3 nights in NYC. We would return!

I wish they were open for lunch. The food is excellent. It feels like eating in an Italian friends home and the service goes along with it

Staff was super; server offered tastes before single glass of wine; complied with food intolerances. After reading reviews, expected sublime everything; it was very good but surprised it wasn’t beyond that. Everyone cognizant if curtain time at 92nd street Y & got us out in plenty of time.

This cozy restaurant is no longer a secret! It’s the place in Carnegie Hill! Best good, service so friendly yet professional

Great place-I love the atmosphere. Perfect date night. The antipasti was fresh fresh, chicken liver with a strawberry took convincing, but was perfect!@ The bolognaise was wonderful as was the risotto. Great fifth trip in!

Great Italian restaurant in the Upper East Side. Great atmosphere and friendly staff. The food is delicious (but a bit expensive). I highly recommend this place for special occasion.

The outside of the restaurant is deceptive-- it doesn't let you know what delicious food you are in for. The place has a definite upper east side feel and some of the prices seem over-the-top ($20 for an anti-pasta plate which had two small but delicious bacala bruschetta, a tiny bowl of potato salad and a third tasty but TINY item.) The service is very good. The pasta was excellent. THe chicken perfectly cooked. All sides are extra. Four people will run approximately $80-100 per person if you have wine and dessert.

Sometimes great. The branzino with olives and orange cooked in parchment was sublime. Perfectly cooked. The triangle pasta also amazing-tasting but heavy on the butter sauce. Bread, excellent. Crispy octopus meant well but too salty. Its accompanying lentils and fennel great foil. Nott a fan of the dry, too crusty crust in special order apple tart. Service needs work. Environment, friendly and cozy if not geriatric. Great Maitre d’. On the ball and caring. Final final, the only great food show on UES. Book ahead. PS sad that one cannot a tialy drinknat the bar. Only dining. And, cheapest bottle of wine $85. Not cool.

There's a reason Sfoglia is well known for its bread! It is simply outstanding. If you can only try one thing it must be the pappardelle which they are known for. The place has a very warm and friendly ambience and a somewhat rustic vibe. And did I mention the bread? If you like it you can get more by ordering the bread pudding for dessert but you must order it up front when you order your main course! You'll just have to take my word for it!

From the food to the service, everything was first-rate. The only drawback is that the menu, even with one or two specials is very limited. If you like the menu items, you will have a great meal. My guests had the trout and the fresh fish special and two others had past dishes. All were well prepared. The size of the romaine salad was big enough to share. Down side, no round table for large party. Good value with wine special. Overall, a very good place for dinner on the upper East Side.

This is a must go to restaurant in NYC. The service, surroundings and dishes are consistantly excellent. Suggest you reserve well in advance as even weekdays are fully booked

Wine served in a small juice glass? That was the start of it. Water glass never empty. Hot bread, but oil was late to arrive. Pasta fagole very salty and watery. Branzini was good, but the veggies overcooked and too salty. Side dishes so so..all overcooked. The pasta was tasty. The one saving grace? DESSERT! The olive oil cake was tasty yet dry. The bread pudding was the best I have ever eaten! Glad I tried it once, many other more fabulous places to go to for a wonderful dining experience.

We lucked into a quiet corner table on rainy, snowy evening. Wait staff was quietly efficient. The butternut squash soup was beautiful and delicate. The pappardelle alla bolognese was so comforting.

Sfoglia is a delightful restaurant! Staff are helpful and gracious. The noise level allowed for a conversation and a very pleasant experience. Ambiance is lovely, warm and intimate. Our meals were excellent, well prepared with good ingredients. We will definitely dine at Sfoglia again.

Sfoglia is a lovely spot serving good food in a relaxed atmosphere. This a our third visit and the service has been consistent in being both attentive and friendly. It is a pricey night out for a couple of school teachers but we have never been disappointed in this splurge. I love the pappardelle alla Bolognese and my wife will only order their Sfoglia’s chicken al mattone. 34. for the pasta and 39. for the chicken. Told you it was pricey. But for us worth the price of admission.

We fell in love with this small, tastefully appointed restaurant. We got mostly chicken and pasta--several types are homemade. Everything was amazing. Our server, Peter, was helpful and efficient. We will definitely go back.

We chose this restaurant as our wedding lunch recently. The service, food quality and professionalism exceeded our expectations. Ours was a destination wedding so we only got to actually see the restaurant two days before the big day. Adriana had been my main contact and it was great to finally meet her. On the actual day, Adriana wasn't able to be there, and Johan was there to see to our every need. It was perfect from beginning to end. The room looked stunning, beautifully laid up with the centrepieces and flower we'd ordered and lovely printed out menus which I hadn't expected. There was a gorgeous display of candles and glasses as we entered the room which set the romantic tone perfectly. We had 5 vegetarians and the restaurant did special additional dishes for them. I can't praise the place highly enough. It made our day. Many thanks.

Food was very good! Service was great! Twice I made a reservation and when they called me to confirm both times, they told me open table made a mistake and we want to know if you will be out of there in 2 hours since we need the table at 8. I told they I assumed so, but was a bit perturbed. Each time we were done before the 2 hr period, but a bit annoying

Incredible, delicious authentic Italian food. Ambiance is wonderful. A very special place on 92/Lex. Need reservations. Or sit at the bar.

Enjoyed our 1st meal as a married couple here and the laid back ambiance was perfect. We were seated in the back room which felt like more space. We enjoyed the formaggi as an appetizer which was wonderful! My other half had a scrumptious pork chop which was the largest that I've ever seen! I enjoyed the pappardelle alla Bolognese which was also delicious. The service was fabulously attentive and we even met the owner who was so very kind.

We arrived having a reservation and they put us in the back room where the acoustics were awful….it was so loud and we could not hear each other speak. We switched tables…better. Molly, our waitress, gave us attitude and rolled her eyes when asked if the chef could make the soup without rosemary….too much for her…she didn’t like that we commented on her eye rolling so spilled our wine everywhere….no more Molly, Tristan, the var manager, appears. Tristen was very nice but it didn’t matter…our salad was wilted and salty, the pasta was drenched in sauce and had no flavor and the flatbread came out cold. This has got to be the biggest scam on the UES…this restaurant is absolutely DISGUSTING!

If you take a subway to this restaurant, you would be wasting a token! Salad was wilted and salty. Flatbread was served very cold. Pasta was drenched in canned tomato sauce. On top of this, the service was awful. Molly, our waitress, rolled her eyes when I asked if she could check with the chef about an ingredient in the soup. She never returned!!! This restaurant should be shut down because it is an imposter for a real restaurant!

We were in on a Sunday night and had a reservation - not sure we would have gotten in otherwise, it was pretty busy. We had a great server who gave good advice to our small-town crew about how to best order off the menu, and what to drink. The food was terrific. Even the busboy was awesome:)

Very friendly staff, great atmosphere (like a Tuscon eatery.) The food is very high quality. We had the chicken, the antipasti and special pasta.

Sfoglia used to be my local Italian, so it is a favourite to which I happily return when in the city, equally happy to note that it's standards have been maintained. The space and ambience are excellent and I love the seasonal and local-inspired menu, based on a foundation of excellent Italian staples. A good wine list rounds out all you need to have a wonderful evening.

A friend took me to one of her favorite restaurants on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and I have to say it was one of the best surprises! I arrived a little early and sat at the bar... very attractive, good service and they make a great martini. We were then seated in the front dining room and it just kept getting better.... The bread that is served is out of this world... the best I have had... crusty on the outside and warm inside... served with excellent olive oil. We started by sharing a pappardelle alla Bolognese. While I'm not a big pasta eater and Bolognese would not be my first choice, this was just an amazing dish! We then shared an order of chicken al mattone and orate. Everything was just fantastic... beautifully prepared and artfully arranged. The service was attentive but not overbearing. The restaurant has a very good selection of wine, both by the glass and by the bottle. There are a lot of good Italian restaurants in NY but this one is outstanding. Hint: make sure you make a reservation!

Good food, spotty service, not the most comfortable chairs. Way overpriced for what it is. Bottom line you can do better.

Ahhhh, everything was perfect - interesting, tasty and unusual antipasti; wonderful salads; perfect entrees including the highly acclaimed chicken and pappardelle alla bolognese. We had a party of 8 and requested family style servings which the waiter accommodated, even though it was last minute. The vegetable sides were yummy and all desserts were to die for, the best chocolate cake ever! We are never satisfied with American gelato, but, close your eyes and you could be in Roma, with wonderfully rich banana chocolate chip gelato. Ideal for a celebration! Be prepared to pay....

Quite disappointing. Service: slow but nice Menu: very short and pedestrian. Bread: stale, burnt and soft dry it cracked. The olive oil was tasteless. Burrata with blueberries but no olive oil or Balsamico? Trying to be “creative” but missing the point. Veal Milanese: this was just bad - deep fried piece of veal instead of gently breaded and pan seared in butter as it should be done and then topped with a radicchio salad? Not sure if it can be worse. So all in all completely forgettable.

Sfoglia used to be “the place” on the UES. Getting reservations was like winning the lottery. Then they expanded which was great. But the last two meals we had were not great. I’ll try it again. Hopefully it was a one-off (twice).

Small restaurant with warm decor. Outstanding food and service but definitely need reservations, even for bar seating.

Our son, who is a serious foody, took us to Sfoglia. It is his favorite neighborhood restaurant and he goes there often. It is smart, busy, and well-run. Best of all, the food is creative and excellent. The new takes and variations on traditional northern Italian dishes make it a very interesting place to dine. I look forward to returning...soon.

THe atmosphere is hopping in this lovely restaurant, a bit dark to see the menus but charming. I had the fish special, the food and menu are very good. We had a rose wine that was a bit overpriced so the meal ended up very expensive for 3 people.

I make a point of dining at Sfoglia every time I travel to New York. Quite simply, one of the most delightful and rewarding restaurant experiences in the city, perfect for entertaining a colleague or encouraging a romance. Food, ambience, service -- all are five-star. I would kill to have this restaurant closer to home!

Love Sfoglia, the food is great, service excellent and restaurant decoration is also very nice. Have been there several times, the last two times sat in a small table in the back room, was great for conversation. The House Antipasti is always a great choice, last time tried the pappardelle a la bolognese, was also great.

There is nothing to recommend in this restaurant. You are seated on bare wood chairs. Only three mains to choose from. The veal Milanese was clearly fried earlier in the day and reheated to a pulp. The chicken under brick, their specialty was not beautifully crisped as it is in other restaurants. The salads were excellent. It’s a place for UES fools who must follow a buzz

I occasionally will stop into Sfoglia and will always order the bolognese. It is amazing, yet proficiently expensive.

We always enjoy a good meal at Sfoglia. The outdoor seating is clean and well separated. Service is friendly with a knowledgeable, engaged staff. Homemade pastas are excellent and wines by the glass and cocktails are interesting and well chosen. I found our gazpacho a bit too sweet, probably because of the addition of watermelon. Shrimp ceviche was notably good.

This part of the isle is inexplicably underserved by the usual Manhattan cutting-edge restaurants. Sfoglia is an exception; the rusticated decor is a pleasing visual backdrop to the simply prepared authentic Italian dishes. where quality ingredients are the stars, not overly-done preparations. Book way ahead because it's usually booked solid on weekends.

I went to visit my buddy and his family in their swanky (but small) place around 90th and Madison. They still had packing boxes all over so we decided to go out to eat at a fancy place about two blocks away called Sfoglia which was very good. The menu was excellent. Simple stuff but done very well. I has a pretty classic lemon "brick" chicken which was very, very good. My buddy had a veal chop that was also very tasty (we traded a few bites). We shared a anglotti dish with peaches which was nicely done. We shared a buretta and did a cream cheese gelato at the end. A nice finish to an expensive meal. The wine list is almost exclusively Italian and medium priced. Their recommendations go right to the MOST expensive. The one thing that I didn't like was the shared table concept. I get that its a small place but I just don't want to share a table with anybody.

Sfoglia has been my go to place in the neighborhood for pasta since I moved in ten years ago. Although Yorkville is changing rapidly and many new restaurants have entered the area, this gem continues to be the place I choose to bring guests and friends from downtown and abroad.

You would be forgiven for walking past this place thinking it was closed...but step inside and you find really friendly service in keeping with the intimate atmosphere. Decor and furnishings are quirky, lending to the familiar feel of the place. Fish special of the day was excellent, chicken under a brick, speciality of the house was possibly the most succulent chicken dish I have ever tasted in a restaurant. Really worth the trip uptown to go here, but hopefully won't get so popular that getting a reservation becomes a problem. Equally suited to a romantic dinner or a night out with the family

Third visit to this delicious place! Each time the food is wonderful. They can get very very busy and this last visit the waiter seemed very absent minded. On three different occasions we had to wave over or ask again or correct a mistake. For 2 people a 160.00 bill one would like to think this would not happen. Order the bread pudding! yummy!

Very good although you may have to eat lunch there as I did to get a table. Chicken was memorable as were the cookies. Service brisk and friendly. The decor felt really old fashioned, and I'm an old guy -- dim lights, warm colors, quiet.

The room is nice and the food is excellent but the prices reflect the owners pride in the product. In summary there are dozens of restaurants of the same quality in the city for substantially less money. Please know that I willingly spend big money for the right dining experience but this is just another upper east side neighborhood place that is no different then the couple dozen others within walking distance of the 92nd street Y that the check will be 30% less.

The experience starts when you are received at the entrance, even without reservation. A homy atmosphere immediately flows and welcomes you. Not two tables are the same. They come straight from homes. What is special about the food, is that it is different from what every Italian restaurant serves in new York. Variety of pasta, great antipasti and delicious deserts will not make you feel light, but definitely well nourished, and with delicious flavors from Italy. One of the best restaurants in the Upper East Side.

Food is fabulous. Service attentive. Decor simple but charming. Thoughtful wine list with choices at all price points.

5 out of 5. Outstanding meal. Can’t wait to come back again! Definitely recommend the Sfoglia Caesar and the Brussel Sprouts. They have loads of great pastas that are all exceptional. Pear Torte to finish was magnificent.

We loved this place until our recent visit. All four of us found our meals so salty hat we returned one and reluctantly ate the others. Though the owner offered to provide another dish, we had no time before our performance. What was so distressing was his refusal to acknowlege the validity of our complaint, told us we were wrong, and basically said “if you don’t like it, too bad - don’t eat here again”.. we probably won’t, but advise others to caution they don’t want their food salty.

A shout out to our Italian waiter Andrea (from Verona) who guided us to wonderful choices. It was freezing out so what a treat to be in the back room farmhouse table which was warm and cozy. It's like being in someone's house to eat a great meal. Creative cocktails (loved the one with Amaro and tequila) followed by an excellent red wine by the glass for my meal. My friend and i shared the smoked salmon tartare, brussels sprouts and some Italian ham (which alas was not sliced thinly enough -should be paper thing), all of which were amazing. We shared 2 half sized pasta dishes - the paparadelle bolognese was my favorite followed by the gemelli with short ribs which was also excellent. for minor gripes, I'd say the cheese was a bit heavy handed on the brussels sprouts and the pasta but other than that, a great neighborhood restaurant with charm and great service.

Haven't had Bolognese like this since I was in Bologna Italy. The chicken was amazing as well. The bread was worth the calories.

Although the ambience is a 5 in my opinion (farmhouse, rustic, great), the food was nothing overly impressive. Worth checking out for the setting for sure.

Great neighborhood Italian food on UES. Very friendly service and nice atmosphere. Great selection of food. A little pricey, but this is the UES, of course.

Despite the incessant hype, long waits to get a table, and the need to make reservations weeks in advance, this place is definitely not worth it. The most off putting issue about Sfoglia is the staff. Rude, condescending, with a perenial air of superiority. The food is phony, over the top, and totally unauthentic. This isn't Italian food. It's fake, Vermont inspired junk (blueberries in pasta?) For the price and the attitude, I'd happily spend the $200 and head to Del Posto for a much better experience.

Great place on the UES. I really loved the cheese plate and the bread is the best in town. Great helpful service and lovely ambiance. This is one restaurant I don't mind going back to again and again.

We stayed for a week in New York and this restaurant was the first one where the food tasted heavenly. Location is secluded and calm on the Upper East Side and the venue was romantic and truly pittoresque. I had the pasta with bone marrow and it was one of the best pastas I have ever had. We ordered a bottle of red wine, two starters and two pastas and the total cost was approx $130.

A nice looking place on the UES.Food is ok ,but far from great.Extremely oily food preparation and small menu.Service is excellent.Table comfort leaves to be desired.

Sfoglia is a restaurant that serves its neighborhood, and the atmosphere is like a favorite pub--no pressure, relaxed (yet attentive) service, an atmosphere that contributes to shedding the pressures of the day, resulting in a sense of security and good humor. Tables are private or shared, but folks here mind their own business, and it doesn't really matter where you are seated. The main dining room feels like Tuscany, unaffected, congenial. The food is very good, and if you require a vegetarian or gluten-free evening, just ask; it can be accommodated. Excellent wine list. Service last night (by Peter, first rate, and manager/sommelier Maria Rust), could not have been more gracious and, well, just calming somehow. There's a great line in Brideshead Revisited when Charles Ryder visits Sebastian's rooms for the first time, for a luncheon. Sebastian's friends don't fuss over Charles, even on his first visit, as they were too well bred to suggest that Charles didn't know them already. That's Sfoglia. I look forward to next time--and to a few more of the unbelievable desserts, too.

Class act, great food in a pristine clean restaurant. You sit almost family style at a big table. Pricey but worth it. You need reservations as it draws a crowd from 92nd Street Y. Seasonal offerings are a great selling point. We just loved it!

We found this restaurant quite by accident, and were drawn by the cozy entrance and stamp-like restaurant logo. We had no reservations, so ate at the bar. I'm only sorry that I didn't catch or remember our bartender's name ... he was awesome!!! We learned that the restaurant makes its own bread & pasta in house. The first night, we started w/ the antipasti della cassa (OK), tomato watermelon panzanella (very nice), entrees pappardelle alla Bolognese (amazing) and tagliatelle (very nice), followed by their order-in-advance dessert, which we were unfortunately way too full to enjoy. They offered a nice selection of Italian wines. Our experience was so good that we returned another night, something I don't often like to do when travelling. Second time around was just as delightful as our first!! Next time I'm in NYC UES, definitely heading back.

This restaurant is across the street from The 92nd Street Y which no doubt explains why it is so crowded before the beginning of any evening event at the Y. Indeed the wait staff will ask you if you have a time restraint when they take your order. One of the specialties of the house is a half roast chicken flattened by a brick during it's preparation. I would be more impressed by this entree if the flesh wasn't raw at the bone indicating it may be a special but it's not necessarily cooked through. Vegetables are extra which makes what should be a simple dish an expensive one. This is an establishment to dine at for it's location, not it's culinary skills.
Nice neighborhood Italian restaurant
Went for a date with my husband and had a great time. Service was super, waiter was really nice, good food. It’s a nice date atmosphere. Highly recommend!
