Flavorful, warm & attentive

By EmptyNest_60 |

Another delightful meal, the mezzes were excellent, and the vegen in our party was especially appreciative of the yogurt on the side. The spinach and fried eggplant were especially good, Moussaka was excellent, and the lamb chops were perfectly done. Service was friendly and patient, very attentive without being intrusive.

Way too expensive for small to medium-sized portions/starters

By Let's make Astoria's restaurants better! |

Way too expensive for small to medium-sized portions/starters. Compared to their new location in Astoria Queens they are bigger in size and more expensive. While the food was good, we don't think we will return. We ended up paying over $100 which simply is not worth the value or quality of the meal

DISGUSTING SHUT WITHOUT NOTICE

By Irene H |

We booked to go there New Years Eve for dinner months ago. They cancelled our booking by email on New years Eve itself. We went down to the restaurant to find it was shut. We weren't given any reasons why shut or no notices on the door.. Ruined our New Years Eve. Had to find somewhere else to eat at last minute.

Nice Turkish restaurant

By Sheela3 |

Sip Sak restaurant in New York is famous for Turkish food . We really liked food very much from starters to main course and dessert , good variety. Staff courteous.

Excellent cuisine!

By Amanda H |

We were blown away at how good the food was. We ordered a selection of items from the appetizer and main dish menu -- the hummus was outstanding, as was the chicken kabob. Highly recommended!

Delicious Turkish food, lively ambience

By swimmer283 |

We were squeezed in on a busy Friday night. Restaurant was loud, but filled with the sounds of happy diners. We had a friendly waiter who explained dishes that we asked about. Our appetizers of eggplant salad and tomato/cucumber salad were excellent (fresh produce making the latter dish stand out). My husband had the special of lamb shank with eggplant over bulgur - wish I'd ordered it as it was out of this world. Tender, fall off the fork lamb. This restaurant will put you in a good mood.

Probably the best Turkish food in New York

By Corry Wang |

The food here is relatively pricey, but I also feel confident in saying that Sip Sak serves the best Turkish food in all of Midtown East... And as a result of the high concentration of Turkish restaurants in the neighborhood (the Turkish consulate is only 2 blocks away!), that probably means it's the best in all of New York as well. I'd especially recommend the Ali Nazik, which is ground beef with an eggplant puree. The eggplant will surprised you with how good it is.

Good lunch

By Walter K |

Went here last minute with a group of people from work. Overall everyone was happy with their meals. We started with apps. They did a vegan platter with many dips and it was delicious. The Muhammara is amazing. I had the lamb kebobs and they were very good. One person had ordered the shrimp casserole but when served you could see it had cheese in it but that wasn’t listed on the menu as one of the ingredients. Service was good.

Still love this place

By Ajaxtol |

Went again with a different group this time and it still rates high with me. Friendly service, nice atmosphere and the food is excellent. This time we had the borek appetizer and one of the specials — stuffed meatballs. Every lamb dish we’ve had has been exceptional. Love the line on their menu: it’s not a Turkish restaurant, just the chef and the dishes are.

Turkish Delight

By Joan R |

The food is quite good here, but the service is very iffy. You never know what you are going to get that way. I have been there and they have told us that something which was on the specials board were never served there. However, the food is quite good if you can overlook the service.

Service plus

By Anne S |

We came upon this restaurant by accident, what a lucky find, excellent service, terrific food. If we had more time would have gone back again.

I don't eecommend

By Explore581231 |

Overpriced, mediocre food, served too cold/ not warm enough, non attentive service, dirty restroom. I am not coming back

Sip Sak is losing it!

By Celik P |

This used to be our favorite Turkish restaurant in NY. I'm sorry to say that it no longer is. Everything they served was of slightly lesser quality when we visited Sip Sak recently. The Manti and Adana kofta were both very mediocre. No wonder the Michelin Guide removed it from its Bib Gourmand list in 2014.

Turkish with Being Turkish

By Jim Gibbs |

To be fair SipSak was recommended to me by a friend. I am glad he did. The environment is great. There are tables for all size groups from solo to groups of eight. I am sure they could accommodate other sizes too. The food was fantastic. I had red lentil soup before dinner. My main course was the lamb and rice. The rice had a great dill flavor and the lamb was cooked perfectly tender. This was presented well, even though my picture shows a bit out of the dish. After dinner I enjoy a glass of chai and relaxed, looking out the front the restaurant. Give this place a try, you will not be dissatisfied.

Best grilled bass in Manhattan

By Oliver S |

Love the grilled bass and the Mediterranean appetizers, hate the wine list :( Service is somewhat reluctant, even when the place is not that busy. I've watched this place evolve from fast food to a restaurant, both in appearances and food offerings and I think they've come a long way from their humble beginnings (both in servings and prices). Owner Orhan is very friendly and makes friends easily with everybody. I do believe he should make an effort to get some better wines, not necessarily Turkish

The best Turkish restaurant in NYC

By Ozge T |

The menu carries the widest range of selections from Turkish cuisine delicacies. You cannot miss the fact that the chef takes pride of his menu. He always says "hi" to all his guests. He runs a very tight shop. The service is very good, even though it gets very very busy. The setting has the taste of old Istanbul restaurants with marble top tables and dim lights. A final bonus: If you are feeling adventurous, ask for off-menu selections.

Great local place

By JiraMonkey |

This is a terrific restaurant -- recommend for locals and tourists looking to try a great neighborhood place. Especially recommend the KAVAKLIDERE ÇANKAYA white wine, it was terrific. The whole menu is online if you want a preview.

Great vibes, great food

By Corgipup |

A friendly, relaxed, reasonably priced Greek and mediterranean restaurant. I love a good lamb shish kebab, but so often am disappointed. Not this time. Hummus was good too, and my friend's Moussaka was excellent -- no bechamel sauce, but very rich. Waiter was extremely friendly. My only quibble: they didn't serve rice with my kebab, and when I asked, the waiter said it didn't come with that dish. I looked at the menu outside: it did.

Great food...but bad...really bad service.

By Reggie J |

Really was looking forward to some really good food and friendly service but alas it didn't happen. Don't get m me wrong the food was really good but the service was deplorable. The server was rude and could not even pretend to care about the quality of her service. The server gave us our check before finish dinner. We were treated like a charity case in a Charles Dickens novel. We spent money and don't deserve that level of disrespect. Was it because I'm African American and my wife is White? I don't know. But I will make sure (if I talk to people privately or on the radio) to offer suggestions that will include both great service and food. And at the present time, Sip Sak is not that place.

Very good and authentic Turkish with excellent service

By Sard-eller |

We dropped by this place since we could not get a nice sushi place on that night within a couple of blocks. Even starting with the wrong mood, the restaurant was nice and staff friendly. Food was good and the service quick. Recommended

Wonderful Find!

By Steve S |

After a day of meetings we asked our NY-based business contact to recommend a good restaurant that wouldn't break the budget, and he put us onto Sip Sak. What a excellent recommendation! The group of four of us had a combination of appetizers (some specials and some regular menu items) that were uniformly outstanding. The wait staff couldn't have been better, recommending things to us and suggesting that we sample each of the items. Especially good were the fried beef dumplings. We then each had separate entrees, and everyone raved. I personally had the lamb kabob, which was tender and flavorful. All in all, an outstanding meal!

Excellent food excellent service

By Hakan D |

This mid town New York jewel is excellent. Great food, great service. Great mezes, great main courses , great service. We loved being here.

Yummy food, reasonably priced

By mhoulahan5832 |

If you're staying mid-town on the east side, put a visit to Sip Sak on the to-do list. And you MUST have the borek -- cheese-filled phylo rolls -- as one of your appetizers. They're so light and greaseless that I wonder if a deal with the devil is involved. The foccacio-like bread served with the entrees is also exceptional. The Turkish dishes are tasty and pretty approachable to an American palate (char-grilled octopus, an appetizer, was probably the most exotic item on the menu). Wines by the glass included two Turkish whites, one of which we enjoyed. Service was brisk and friendly. Most of the seating is inside, but there are two bays flanking the entrance which in good weather will be popular with al fresco couples, especially if like my spouse they are capable of imagining that 2nd Avenue between E 49th and E50th is really a lot like the Via Veneto. The facade features ornamental lamps and wrought iron, giving the place a kind of art nouveau look. Oh yes, it also has a Bib Gourmand rating from The Michelin Man.

Delicious as in Turkey

By Alper Altan |

The place is in 2. avenue not far away from many places. It was really delicious. Espacially the lamb and also the fish menu. Also the appetizers are very tasteful. I strongly recommed this restaurant.

Horrible service

By Núria G |

Deplorable experience. Very rude owner. He has invited us to leave the restaurant before having finished our dinner because our 2-year-old son was crying - he wasn’t feeling well. In addition, it’s really expensive and the food is only “ok”. I’d recommend you to go somewhere else.

yummy food, great service and atmosphere...loved it!

By lkrocks |

we have walked by this neighborhood restaurant admiring the facade for a very long time! tonight we tried it and kicked ourselves for waiting so long to do so! we sampled several dishes, had a special, and satisfied the carnivores, vegetarians and vegans...all were very very happy with their food! even better than that (yes, i rate this more important) was the service...we felt like we were at someone's home, and had all of our questions answered, our food brought promptly and at the same time, and even got an extra piece of dessert thrown in to make sure all in our party got a taste. classy and wonderful!!

Wonderful Mediterranean Food on 2nd Ave

By ahappycouple2 |

On a Wednesday evening, my cousin and I dropped in around 6:30 and had a fabulous meal. My lamb was outstanding and the fried eggplant appetizer was fabulous as well. My cousin asked for special accommodations on her entree and it was no problem. Our booth in the back was cozy and quiet - the service was very good.

Turkish cuisine at its best

By Ubavka |

Definitely my favorite restaurant in Manhattan - when I want to feel the taste of food I am used to - I go to Sip Sak. Great atmosphere, absolutely fantastic food, great service. Octopus is the king of all appetizers I have ever tried. Can't get enough of it. We usually take a lots of appetizers, and eat, eta, eat... Sometimes, during the right time of the year they have fried fresh anchovies...what a feast!

Such a relief!

By Oliver S |

True confession: Covid kept me away from my city for a long time. So, when I first found out that the owner of my favorite restaurant around the corner from my had died of heart attack, I was really worried that it might mean changes not for the better. Well, i'm happy to report that this is not the case: the place is alive and kicking, with food better than before, if this is possible. Order all the appetizers you can handle and have a ball. Or go for some fish, all exquisite and yummy. Service will not disappoint you either.

Authentic and tasty Turkish food in NYC!

By JWC_54 |

Went here on the recommendation of a friend. He was right. This place is great. Enjoyed some fabulous Turkish wine, appetizers and mains. Just beware of the innocuous looking green pepper in one of the pita+lamb apps. I swallowed the whole thing and it blew my doors off. Super hot. But good. The really do eggplant dishes very well. We had an eggplant purée with lamb that was unlike anything I had ever tasted before. They also gave us a dessert on the house. Great chef and environment. Highly recommended.

Love This Place

By Gary P |

Great location and food to match. Second time here and would definitely visit again. If you like Mediterranean food, this is a place you need to try!

Good food

By veenakrishnamoorthy |

The vegetarian options are few, but the ones there are very good. The lentil soup is really good as well as the borec and the fried eggplant with garlic and tomatoes. Definitely worth visiting. My friends were very happy with the lamb dish they ordered as main course

Gluten free delight and tr astey

By heather w |

Nice atmosphere with helpful staff. Gluten free understood and meaks still had flavour. I had the kamb and rice dish more than a average person could eat

Fantastic food- highlight of our recent trip to NYC

By Carey C |

We stumbled upon this wonderful little restaurant last month - what a great find! The food was authentic Turkish, very fresh and flavorful. My husband got a lamb burger and said was was the best one he's ever had. I ordered the vegetarian sampler plate, and it was delicious, a nice mix of flavors & textures. The bread was still warm, freshly made and fantastic. The atmosphere is great, cozy but not too crowded. Finish off with Turkish coffee or tea, both were a perfect ending to a wonderful meal!

Went once never returned because of owner

By 890willy |

Owner is known in the Turkish restaurant community as nutty and has an abrasive attitude. It would have been ideal because of its location in the neighborhood. The food is casual Turkish food and is otherwise well seasoned and prepared. Lamb dishes are good. Hummus and patlican salatasi are average to good.

Dinner

By Christopher M |

We had booked this place on a recommendation so perhaps had higher hopes. Service was friendly helpful and efficient but food was just above average given the prices. I had beef kebabs , which were tender but lacked seasoning. Bulge wheat was also dry so like I say average! Other dishes were chicken kebabs- they were better and lamb kebab. Starters were ok but nothing special. We love Turkish food but this was certainly not our favourite experience. Would not go back but it was not a bad experience.

Some of the best traditional Turkish food in NYC

By jameswheat17 |

I absolutely love Turkish food. It's not the first thing I think of when I think of ethnic cuisine, but every time I eat it, I'm reminded why I love it-- fresh flavors and unique ingredients and spices make for delicious meals. I tried Sip Sak last week and had a really great experience. First off, the service was incredible - the waitstaff were very friendly and attentive to my needs. Any time I had a special request (no ice in my iced tea, for example) they obliged without issue and generally made the experience go seamlessly. I also loved the food. One of my favorite things that I ordered was the eggplant salad, which was done very well - the eggplant had just the right texture. I also got something called the manti, which was the handmade beef dumplings with this really tasty garlic spiced yogurt. I love yogurt dipping sauces and am very picky about my meat, but this place had really high quality beef. Overall I had a really great experience at Sip Sak and will be back soon.

Terrific Turkish Food

By Eric G |

We were pleasantly surprised that the chef/owner, who is gregarious, enthusiastic, and has big personality stopped by our table to describe the menu and answer questions. The food was excellent, as was the quality and speed of service. I will definitely visit again the next time I'm in New York to sample other menu items.

Delicious and good value

By Lisken Van Pelt Dus |

We really enjoyed our meal here. Delightful server, extremely tender octopus appetizer, delicious shrimp casserole and osso buco, tasty almond pudding. Good value. Fairly busy but noise level low enough to allow for good conversation.

Good turkish, great dips!

By legendrc |

Stopped by on a Friday evening before it got too busy. The decor was nice and clean inside and service was prompt. Ordered some dips, the sizzling shrimp and the braised beef for mains. The dips (humus and eggplant salad) were excellent and the bread was hot and very tasty. The shrimp were good and the braised beef was quite nice although the pasta it came out on was a bit overcooked. Overall a very nice Turkish place for a satisfying dinner!

A Favorite Restaurant

By Harvey M |

This has become one of my favorite restaurants because, not only is the food very good, it offers a quality restaurant change from the Italian restaurant dominated N.Y.C. From recent past visits within the last approximately 30 days I can recommend the Fried Eggplant appetizer and the main course of Eggplant Musakka (with meat) which is served with cracked wheat. See my other review and my photos. The restaurant opens for lunch at noon, and does not close the kitchen until it takes its last order at 10 p.m. most nights.

Great food!

By Geekontherun |

The good food was fantastic better then expected. I ate the salmon it was cooked to perfection, the wine was good, and the shepherds salad was fantastic! The only negative was they had the heat on and I thought I was going to pass out. I had a turtleneck on under a long sleeved top and was suffocating. Wear short sleeves under your coat and you will be fine! I would have rated them a five had it not been for the heater.

Good Turkish food

By Sheela3 |

Sip Sak New York very nice place to eat Turkish food , good variety also for vegetarian, soup starters main course especially Halawa made of samolina cake with ice cream inside , we loved and liked eating there .

Good Turkish restaurant

By Cakebreadt |

My colleague who is Turkish recommended this place. The food is really good and the inside nicely decorated. A good Turkish place!

Delicious

By WILawyer |

My wife had the beef dumplings in garlic yogurt sauce. I had the spicy lamb. Excellent. Very good bread. Good service. I would come back.

Fabulous but beware

By CCarey |

Four of us had the most flavorful meals, truly delicious. The spice balance was perfect and everything was presented and cooked beautifully. However, the prices listed online are not a true reflection of where the actual prices are and most items were $5-$9 more expensive. Their site needs updating. The service was excellent, the wine and beer list is modest but enough to choose from. Lamb is king and I have never had such flavorful rice.

Great Turkish food!

By am918 |

Busy, nice restaurant in Midtown. The food is authentic and delicious. I tried lentil soup, hummus, baby eggplant, sea bass filet, Turkish coffee, halva, and baklava over 2 visits. Everything was delicious and brought back memories of Turkey. The service was fast and friendly, really full of Turkish hospitality, always a team effort with 3 or 4 people watching out for you, making sure you had plenty of bread and drink. I hear the lamb is fantastic, and they have several veggie options. I was able to walk in and be seated right away solo, but larger parties will probably want reservations.

Excellent Turkish food

By Ajaxtol |

One of the best Turkish restaurants I’ve eaten in outside of Turkey. Terrific mezze. Biggest problem here is not over ordering and over eating. Specials were truly special. Leave room for baked rice pudding.

Delicacy? Say no more. This is the place

By selcukny |

I have visited sipsak many times in the past. It is by far the best Turkish food I have eaten anywhere outside of Turkey. First, the owner: Orhan, a very eccentric personality ( referred to as many by "crazy" ) is the restauranteur model taught in business schools. He is always aware of what is going on in his place. Hr knows how many specials are sold and how many are left at any moment. He checks all bills before they are submitted to diners fir errors. He ensures accuracy all around. Okay, ask him for food that is similar to indian food, he will make sure to dump you on the sidewalk. Ask him for delicate Turkish food, he will feed you the best. I ate everything that was ever on the menu so I feel like I can say a thing or two. Kebabs can be all summed up in one word: excellent. Everything from the live animal to the plate is supervised by Orhan. All mezes are true to their region and original. No bad, old , stale or fake food here. The only thing I wished here was if this was a dressier restaurant. Orhan had upper scale, more expensive restaurants in the past, but this one is a chic cafe( with cafe prices and top chef food). So, if you want real Turkish food, this is the place to go. I have been cooking for 12 years actively and I do not think I know %12 of what Orhan knows. Strongly recommended.

Excellent authentic Turkish cuisine

Very good Turkish food, recommended by Turkish friends. The restaurant is quite expensive for what it is though

Good and getting better by the minute

By Oliver S |

I watched this restaurant since day one, when it first opened more or less like a fast food place with no liquor license. It's around the corner from me, so it's easy to check it out. I saw them grow and improve-- a process that continues and is bringing results. I recently brought some friends there for dinner on a slow evening over Memorial Day weekend. We started with a feast of their appetizers: all home made, from fresh ingredients, nothing but the best: yogurt, roasted & grilled vegetables and spreads, fresh red tomatoes with good Feta cheese and yummy olives and more and more. All this accompanied by delicious pita bread. It is obvious that the place benefits enormously by the skills and food affinity of owner/Chef Orhan. We followed the appetizers with scrumptious grilled fillets of sea bass that come with their own salad. The bar has improved hugely too, now featuring single malts and fine cognacs. The wine list would be the only shortcoming: it's too short and composed of unknown, mainly Turkish, wines. I am not saying they are bad, I am only saying that I am not willing to taste them, so we stay on safe territory here and drink either scotch or beer. Service is fast and efficient, even if somewhat rushed at times. Prices are still reasonable, even if much higher than when it opened, but this is normal. Yummy place, highly recommended if you like Mid Eastern food (or at least some aspects of it!)

What a find! Sensational food. Highly recommended.

By Waterloonie |

One of the highlights of our weeklong dining tour of Manhattan. Chef/Owner Orhan Yegen welcomes you personally into his world of absolutely wonderful and delicious Turkish cuisine. Orhan will be on hand all evening to offer you his personal commentary on food and life. Sensational lamb dishes, outstanding octopus (best I have ever had!), all kinds of salads and soups ... all out of this world. Foodies, stop by here for some unique and expertly prepared food and Turkish hospitality and be sure to try some surprisingly good Turkish wines. Highly recommended!

We felt welcome from the moment we walked in the door.

By blueghost |

On the reccomendation from the Concierge at our hotel, we tried this place on a Friday night after a 7 hour drive into the city. We were welcomed right away. The food was deliciouse, the service was warm and fuzzy, and the beer was cold and fizzy! Our children. This was a great place to start out trip to New York with.

Authentic Turkish On Second Avenue

By WhereNext2NYC |

This Turkish long standing restaurant is dimly lit, and its very large room has a nice ambience. The food is tasty and flavors authentic; and the menu and specials were extensive. The service was ok, nothing to write home about. The prices, those are high, particularly the wine which is all Turkish.

Turkish Food in Midtown

Great selection of appetizers (meze) and entrees. Raki by the glass as well. Loved the bread (pide) as well. Instantly bonded with the staff.

Lively neighborhood gem

By MK330 |

Have done both takeouts and dine-ins several times - most recent being Nov 2 dinner. Great place for both families and couples. Charming dining room was filled with families (some w/children) and couples. Service was efficient. Waiter-to-patron ratio is surprisingly high. Loved the bread. We had the excellent lentil salad and grilled octopus to start, then lamb kebab, beef dumpling and the steak (special of the night) - all done superbly. Will definitely be back!

Fresh and Fantastic

By Nancy W |

This is a great place. The cucumber and tomato salad is to die for. The seasoning on the lamb was superb. We had a desert that started as butternut squash; the owner/chef described it table-side. Divine. As far as Turkish cuisine goes, the best I've ever tasted. Family run and suitable for business friends and family.

Best turkish restaurant

By Talin T |

We love this place! Everything is sooo good but pricy when it comes to the portions. Borek and stuffed cabbage is a must !! Friendly staff and fast service. I highly recommend this place for those who are into turkish cuisine.

INEXPLICABLY BAD EXPERIENCE DURING COVID-19

By NYC❤️ |

We felt like good middle-eastern food. After a morning of hiking in NJ We decided to go to Sip Sak. We called from the way to ask if they had outdoor seating, and if they kept all safety measures in accordance with CDC recommendations. The person who answered the phone said not to worry as they take care of everything... when we got there, we first went to wash our hands before we ate and then we sat down. Out of the three employees we saw, one did not wear a mask, one wore it on his chin and one wore it on and off, constantly touching his face. We told the waiter that we were not happy about that and decided to leave. He started shouting at us: “you are very smart, you come here to use the bathroom and then you complain about masks.” Not only did he not apologize, but he also yelled at us and seemed so angry that it felt unsafe. The restrooms themselves, of which he was apparently so protective, were also disgusting. Going into the restrooms left us feeling less clean than before we entered them. When he started yelling, all the people on the street stared at him but he was not bothered at all and continued to yell. That was a very bad experience. We are extremely disappointed and deeply disturbed. This should not happen these days!

Great food, went back for more two nights later.

By Scott M |

The new owner served us both nights that we had dinner here. Tried lots of dishes - appetizers, mains, deserts and loved them all. Prices were low considering the quantity and quality of the food. Very congenial atmosphere.

AWESOME MEDITERRANEAN ! ! !

By poppy2013 |

I used a Groupon (discount coupon) and sometimes you're not treated as well as if you didn't have it. The staff treated us so well. The food was terrific and the service great. From the homemade hummus to the homemade baklava and rice pudding with amazing kebabs and salmon in between we had a wonderful dining experience. We'' definitely return

After a long search, we finally found a good Turkish restaurant in NY City. Friendly crew, good food, fair pricing.

RUN, do not walk, to this delightful place!

By KMacassar |

Sip Sak has been on my list of restaurants to try for a while. Finally got there this past weekend which was probably not the best of times! It was opening session of the UN and traffic and the crowds were crazy. But the owner and wait staff made it totally worthwhile. I had not made reservations since it was our first night in NY and didn't have a good idea of timing. Walked in and we were told there was a couple leaving shortly so a table would be available. Would we sit at the bar, have a drink for the wait. The bar is small - 4 stools - in the middle of the restaurant. We had a glass of wine and watched the crowd. Although the staff was hustling, they never made the customers feel rushed. When asked a question, they stopped and patiently answered. The owner stopped a few times to apologize that it was taking so long. We asked if we could eat at the bar and he looked relieved that we gave him an 'out'. The bar top was granite and deep so eating there was quite comfortable. Started off with Borek - crispy phyllo rolls, feta cheese and dill. Reminded me of little egg rolls but much lighter. Do eat the arugula and other greens that it is served on! Changes the taste unbelievably! Entrees were Buttered Noodles with ground beef, tomato, peppers and garlic. Again, very light. Also had the daily special roasted lamb and rice with a roasted tomato. Neither entree had a lot of meat included. For some people, that may be an issue. For us, it was great. Small bits of meat, lot of flavor. We also had the sauteed spinach - warning - lots of garlic which is fine with us. Portions were just right. Filled but not stuffed. After the check was paid, the owner brought over a dish of Almond Pudding as a thank you for our patience! I'm not much of a pudding eater but I almost had to stop my partner from licking the bowl, he liked it so much! Prices are quite reasonable. The room a nice balance of old style with tin ceiling tiles and etched mirrors with an updated feel. One of the best places we have visited in a long time.

great food, stuffy service

By letsgo2242 |

Went with family over Christmas week and found the food delicious. there were 5 of us, each chose different entre and enjoyed sharing. We tend to be somewhat outgoing and jovial diners. The woman who was our server was not engaging, stuffy, and made us quite uncomfortable. no holiday cheer that day at Sip Sak!

Incredible Food and Atmosphere

By Dale L |

This restaurant was recommended by my sister. Boy was she spot on! The ambience is elegant and sophisticated. The food was absolutely delicious. I was with a party of 10. Each and every one of us had incredible meals. The prices were extremely fair. I will definitely be back to visit on my next trip to NYC.

Awful

By Ted L |

Atmosphere compares unfavorably to that of a noisy diner, except that you are asked to pay mid-town Manhattan prices. Food is mediocre at best, and when we complained to the waitress about the chick pea salad, the owner arrived and argued with us. He told us he is an artist who works with food. His friends, with whom he had been having coffee at a nearby table, egged him on. We left.

Wonderful Turkish food, nice place

Second time here and this is confirmed my favorite Turkish place in NYC - wonderfully prepared food, nice ambiance. I will come back again.

Cosy and delicious

By JohnBerryman |

A nice restaurant, seems to be family run, lovely staff and service. Food is excellent and generous.

Amazing

By Josh R |

The food was absolutely delicious. We ordered a bunch of appetizers. The borek and eggplant salad was fresh and tasty💕 While the Curry-Crusted Pan Fried Calf’s Liver Cubes were the best I ever had. The lamb sausage is served in a skillet and remains hot to the last bite. For dessert the Turkish coffee ☕️ and baklava was a unique delight of which I never tasted before. The food is amazing.

I love Sip Sak

By Melisa A |

My husband and I stumbled across Sip Sak one hot hot NY summer day and jumped in for some AC and lunch. First win - Summer: The AC was on, not too cold! I hate freezing restaurants during the summer, it spoils my food, my experience and... I just hate it. We sat at the bar and just ordered a couple of small plates. They were excellent. Second win - Fall : We decided to go back with my husbands parents. Nervous as we had only stumbled across the place, this was a true test to whether it was a hit or not. It was. We ordered a number of small plates. The halloumi is excellent. The shrimp smothered in a lovely garlic oil which remind light yet pungent. The octopus was cooked to perfection. The hummus is thick and tasty, not too creamy. Yes! I can't speak for the others in my party - but my main was also excellent. I ordered the ground beef wrapped in cabbage. Light in flavor, just enough sauce and wonderfully cooked. The other mains looked good, but the consensus was - next time lets just order more small plates as they are fun to share and so very good. For desert we ordered the roasted squash with honey and walnuts. Lovely! A cocktail each and a glass of wine each, turkish coffee and a raki and the bill was around $330 for four of us. No loud music. The general material of the restaurant is marble so it can get a little loud with conversation, but thankfully not with scrapping chairs on floors. Accordion doors lead out to the street, looks lovely, but I don't recommend sitting in the window as there is heavy traffic on the avenue and when they are open it's very noisy. Opt to be closer to the back or bar. Good for a date, dinner with friends, business lunch. Dinner and tapas style.

Great food, service

By KANewYork |

Perhaps my favorite Turkish in the city. Hence multiple visits :) This time we started out with the cheese boreks and lahmacun (latter not on menu). The main- fish dish- I had was quite good with crisped skin. Went well with a bottle of decently priced Turkish white wine. Ended with a glass of raki! Nice staff, attentive service. This time around was a Friday night dinner, they were quite obviously busier than on weeknights I have gone in. The ambiance was quite different. I think I prefer it a bit quieter.

Wonderful Turkish food

By Pat O |

We hoped to find food which tasted as good as some of the food we had in Turkey, and this place satisfied. I loved the vegetarian moussaka. Unpretentious, friendly place with good food.

Authentic and Genuine!

By hnestel |

Dining at Sip Sak was a great surprise. This place is a genuine NYC find as it is authentic Turkish food served in a completely understated environment. I've added it to my list of places to recommend to friends and family when they visit us in NYC.

Tourist rip off

By misspiggy1977 |

My friend has lived in NYC for more than 25 years and I visit twice a year. We booked for dinner last week and she was telling me how the prices have gone up over the years; as they do. I was quoting different prices on my menu to hers so we swapped. On my menu everything was 6 or 7 dollars more. I was obviously given the 'Tourist menu. When my friend questioned the manager or maitre'd; he was very panicky and trying to drag the menu from my friends hands. Obviously we left and went to a local Mexican which was beautiful. Be careful.

Excellent Meze's

By OBofNY |

Great Turkish meze's at a reasonable price and in an authentic setting. Got very nice service from smiling staff. Strongly recommend trying this one out, particularly for the starters.

Had potential

By Noel K |

We were looking for a nice restaurant in the east 40's in NYC and we stumbled across a fairly busy small restaurant. After finding our seats it took 5-10 minutes before anyone spoke to us. We were given water and then left alone, again for another 10 minutes. The waiter arrived and took our drinks order. We were not offered food for approximately 25 minutes. The waitress, who we later found out was the manager, couldn't explain what one of the items on the menu was and instead offered rice. Our meal came 20 minutes later swimming in oil. I had some sort of chicken which was acceptable, but the bland rice floating in oil was not up to standard. My wife's meal was horrific, we drained 8 table spoons of oil from her Moussaka and still it was swimming. The 'meat' was of poor quality and the vegetable were falling apart. We spoke with the Manager who blamed us for not knowing that eggplant was high in oil so therefore the dish would have more oil in it. My wife and her family are Greek and I have never seen such a poor imitation of a dish. The moussaka was left on the bill with absolutely no apology. To be honest It is the worst service I have ever encountered. Sip Sak you should be ashamed, you offered so much but delivered so little.

Great Turkish restaurant with Chef Orhan Yegen's magical food.

By Steve S |

I ve been following Chef Orhan since long years by his restaurant openings. He opened a lots of successful Turkish restaurants in the city. And this is one of them. I have tried the food ,for me its the best Turkish food that you can have in the city. They call Mr.Orhan Crazy, yes he is crazy but only for the Food &Cooking . He has this passion that i have not seen at the other restaurants owners. Anyways Highly recommended if you really love Turkish food. Waiters are OK. Management is good. But the food is excellent .. The prices are really reasonable and the bread is exceptional.

Live a little - try some Turkish Food

By HJF_2010 |

Traveling into Manhatten? want to try something different? Live a little, try this Turkish restaurant. The food at the Sip Sak is very good, the staff is fantastic and the ambiance is welcoming. Next time you are in the city, this is a great place to enjoy your evening.

Excellent

By Burak C |

Best Turkish restaurant in NYC as always👍 Babaganush, calf liver and Adana kebab wonderful …!! Rice pudding best dessert ever..

Good food, wonderful service.

By Auntie_Maim_0001 |

Sip Sak is an unpretentious little Turkish restaurant on the East Side, not too far from Grand Central. I ate there with two other people recently and had a Greek Salad with grilled chicken that was surprisingly good. Another member of our party had a lamb entree that he proclaimed "outstanding" and the other scooped up hummus and Baba Ghannouj with fresh breads. The employees at Sip Sak were unpretentious, knowledgeable and willing to answer any and all questions. They were solicitous and on top of our needs every step of the way. I ate here one time before, about four years ago. The restaurant has since gotten a renovation that I feel sort of sucked the character out of the space. It's a little more Mediterranean-generic now. But no matter, at least they have French Doors across the entire front that open to Second Avenue for warm weather dining, and the tables aren't too close together. The fact that the food at Sip Sak is quite reasonably priced makes it worth your while to give this place a try. Make reservations for a holiday or weekend if you want to be sure to get a table when you want one.

Rip off and bad service

By gladys v |

Came around 12 on a sunday, ordered breakfast food. Menemen eggs and cheeses. Waitress kept pushing us to order sucuk eggs and go for bottled water. Menemen and sucuk were not good. The best part of the meal was the desert. Then bill come $26 for the cheese platter! They probay just made up some price and charged us coz they were not on the menu. Also $8 for a small fiji water, thats why they kept pushing us to order another bottled water. Bad service as well, waiters kept staring, maybe nothing else to do since place was empty. Ughh, never should of came here.

They now open at 4PM, but let us in early

By Alex B |

Sip Sak recently changes hours of operation, now is from 4 PM. We didn't know as on the internet it still shows that was opening at noon. We were there at 3:30 and we were let in, served promptly and with a smile from a interestingly dressed young waitress. Food was excellent, I went for a special, lamb shank and it was delicious. Appetizers were also good like lightly panfried anchovies. Also baked rice pudding was very tasty.

Good Turkish Food and friendly good service

By FatihAkol |

Real Turkish cuisine and a good restaurant. I recommend Sip Sak. The service is very good and friendly. I tasted few different dishes, every one of them was pretty good and well done. If you would like to try Ottoman / Turkish Food, I believe Sip Sak is the restaurant in Manhattan...

Quintessential Turkish Cuisine

By BozemanMike |

What a treat. Asked a business associate in NYC where was the best Turkish restaurant in NYC. Sip Sak was the choice. Four of us dined in style with some quintessential Turkish cuisine. A fantastic menu, lots of lamb dishes, all very authentic and appropriately prepare in the Turkish tradition. The staff was attentive and informative. Having lived in Istanbul for several years, I was not disappointed. My colleagues, none of whom had lived in Turkey were impressed. A busy place a 7PM on a Weds evening, but not noisy or disruptive. What a great meal at very reasonable prices for the NYC restaurant and the quality of food. Five stars. I hope to return in the future.

Enjoyable dinner

By NickfamilyKent |

Our welcome was a little underwhelming but it turned out that the lady who greeted us was the only grumpy staff member all of the others were super friendly and efficient. We had a variety of food including stuffed eggplant, prawn casserole, chicken kebab and courgette pancakes and all of it was really good. The wine was expensive at $15 a glass and our glasses were continually refilled with water. Decent atmosphere if not a bit quiet, all in all a good meal.

Excellent Food and Service

By WoofleDust |

My wife and I visited on the strength of a NY Times article. We will return on the basis of the food, which was excellent. After sharing a borek appetizer along with the grilled octopus appetizer, my wife had a lamb shank kabob and I had the grilled sea bass. All was very tasty, and our waiter (Berk) took great care of us too. A nice atmosphere for a pleasant unrushed meal.

Good but overpriced

By Luigi Peccini |

Nice atmosphere and excellent service. Food is very good but limited in choice with many typical Turkish dishes missing from the menu. Also quite overpriced.

Great food and they serve the Turkish Efes beer too!!

By jigiindia |

Chanced into this eatery while strolling on 1st avenue - didn't even know what cuisine to expect, but were hungry, so just went in! And were glad we did!! It's small, simple and nothing fancy. Much to our delight, the food was Turkish. With our experience of Alibaba a few days ago, we ordered with a bit of hesitation. The mezze was excellent, the pita fresh and the kebabs delicious and juicy! And much to our delight - they had the local Efes beer to offer! Ended the meal with a great Turkish coffee. It's one of the most understated cafe's considering the quality of food they offer!

Gem of a Turkish Restaurant

By darlinbeck |

The concierge recommended Sip Sak for a late lunch after our arrival in NYC. What a wonderful surprise. The food was excellent. The hummas was fresh, served with warm bread and the zucchini pancake was to die for. I had the beef stuffed cabbage and my daughter had the lamb. Both were excellent and delicious. The prices were moderate and the servings large. Waitstaff were very friendly and courteous. Great discovery.

OMG - DELICIOUS!

By SFOglobetrotter |

We went with a local friend (who is Turkish) - he obviously goes there a lot, because we were fussed over, but it did seem like they fussed over everyone - the food was fantastic - we ate family style, which for Mediterranean is always a good idea. Totally recommend.

Food okay, but service loud and nnwelcoming

By MaineMommy |

We went here on the recommendation of a friend. We were a party of 8. On the positive side, the appetizers and salads were very good. The octopus (though very pricey) was excellent. The entrees were good, but not as good as the appetizers. I had a lamb shish kabob special which I would not order again. Lamb pieces were the size of sugar cubes and the grilled vegetables included one small tomato and a very spicy jalapeno (or the like) pepper. The real problem with the dinner was the rushed service and noisiness of the restaurant. From the second we walked in the door we were asked what we wanted to drink. We were meeting and greeting each other and were again asked what we wanted to drink and were we ready to order. This pushy approach continued through out the dinner. When we ordered a bottle of wine (finally...), we requested six glasses. The waitress poured five glasses and left one empty. The wine was gone. No apology. She just stood there waiting for us to say something. This was either poor planning or a pushy way of getting us to order a second bottle immediately. Either way, it was viewed as obnoxious. We would have ordered a second bottle at some point, but it was forced upon us. The volume level in the restaurant was beyond loud. It was hard to hear the person sitting directly across the table and impossible to hear anyone further away. This of course leads to more noise as everyone in the restaurant had to speak very loudly to be heard. When we left I asked other people in our party what they had thought; the consensus was too loud, rushed and unwelcoming. With so many other options in NYC, we have absolutely no reason to return.

Best Turkish food in Turtle Bay area of Manhattan

By sobeneweyork |

Sip Sak is usually crowded with Turkish people. It has a Turkish menu. It can be a bit noisy at times. I prefer a table facing the street, with a large glass door, which is usually open during warm months.

Excellent Turkish

By KANewYork |

This is the real deal. The boreks are flaky and perfect- both the cheese and meat ones are equally good. I had the grilled fish fillet which was cooked perfect. The desserts are a must- the semolina halva with ice cream was delicious! The waitstaff is friendly and they are efficient. Special mention must be made of Banu, the manager who is on the floor and very helpful. We tried a Turkish white wine she recommended and it was surprisingly good!

Poor service and attitude toward customers

By GlendaNYC |

Thirteen of us went to Sip Sak for dinner, which was empty of any customers. The reception by the owner and his daughter (?) was so uncomfortable and so rude. He gruffly greeted us with the fact that he had called the person who made the reservation and no one had answered. She explained we had all been working at a large conference all day and did not hear her cell phone. He said we were lucky it was early, and any other establishment would charge us 250.00 for keeping a reservation without confirming. Then he introduced us to his daughter who had come in to help that night and she would take our orders. She was even ruder, with an attitude that would make anyone else get up and leave. Unfortunately, we did not because we had 13 people who were very hungry and exhausted from hosting a conference on refugees for 700 people. Because we were such a large group, we did not think it would be easy to find another place to accommodate all of us. We let our hunger speak and endured the poor management and service. I have had Turkish food many times before and it was ok and nothing special. 13 women left saying they would never recommend, nor return to this establishment. The owner and his daughter made the experience unforgettable for all the wrong reasons.

Perfect choice if you want to get upset

By Antigoniesq |

We made the unfortunate choice to go to this place for dinner. The place is VERY loud, the menu is limited compared to other Turkish restaurants, the prices are high and the attitude is anything but friendly. The shepherd salad was good, though they charged $3 for the few crumbles of feta they added. The manti was unlike any other manti we had eaten elsewhere, it was more like ravioli in a yogurt-soup. The grilled calamari was ok, but could have been more crisp, it was rather limp. The waitress was visibly annoyed when we asked a few questions when deciding among the desert options. We finally chose the almond pudding, which was ok. We were then asked 3 times if we wanted to order coffee or tea and when we didn't, the owner came by and asked us to pay and leave because he wanted the table "to make money". I have not encountered such rude behavior before in any other place. We will never go there again.

Delicious food

By Adriana P |

A friend recommended this place, which was unexpected empty by the time we arrived. That made us question if the restaurant was really that good (as almost every place is packed during Summer), but the food was just delicious. The roasted short ribs are very, vey good.

Loved it!

By aussiehughes |

We would highly recommend this restaurant. Everything was wonderful - the food, the staff, the decor. Wished we lived closer so we could eat there regularly.

Great option for Turkish in midtown!

By LillyFred |

We had a party of 5 on a Saturday evening and had been visiting Rock Center just before dinner - I am always skeptical of finding good food at "reasonable" prices in that area of NYC! The food was really delicious and authentic (we had someone in our group to vouch for it;-) lots of lamb dishes with incredible sauces and the bulgar pilaf was very good! we each had three courses and the table had two bottles of wine - came to $50 per person before tip (which surprisingly wasn't already included!) and for our group that was OK for a splurge evening - you could have done it for less with more reasonable menu selections, too - we were able to sit as long as we wanted to enjoy our wine and dessert which was nice, too! The atmosphere was quaint, upscale in appearance and looked more like a bistro than the super "middle eastern" style of some places, which I really liked - I would definitely go back and would encourage NYC visitors to that part of town to take the short walk over a few avenues out of tourist-central to give it a try:-)

Very Good Experience

By marcogi6 |

Nice turkish restaurant on Second Avenue. The service was fine. Food was very tasty. We drank an excellent Argentinian Malbec. Reasonable prices. Overall, a very good experience.

Saturday Lunch

By Necmeddin K |

Best Turkish restaurant in NYC. Delicious food, great service, friendly staff and very reasonable pricing. Aubergine salad was great, stuffed mussels were very good, börek with dry aged meat was a dream. Dont ever miss the special kokoreç.

Best Turkish restaurant outside of Turkey

By edianegm |

Everything here is amazing. The mezze was incredible, the perfectly balanced and textured humus and babaganoush would be enough for me to come back over and over again. But then the main courses arrived and both the lamb with rice and the lamb meatballs (lucky I was with someone who also enjoys a taste of everything so we could share) were spectacular, and I don't actually like lamb! I only ordered it because I wasn't hungry anymore and I had been convinced to try lamb and enjoyed it in Turkey, so I was curious to see just how good this restaurant was. I was not disappointed and I very much long forward to going back to NYC just to eat here!

Excellent Authentic Turkish Food

By HelenaGuerra |

We came here for brunch with turkish friends but ended up just ordering from the lunch menu. Had the beef in eggplant mash (hunkar begendi) and roasted lamb. Both were excellent. Our friends are regulars and they say this is one of the best turkish places in NYC. Judging from our experience I surely believe that! It's not super cheap, but hey it's NYC...

Good Turkish Food

By 40Acres |

I was a solo diner, there for lunch. I was welcomed even as a "party of one", seated by a window (which I like when I'm alone) and well served. Food choices were varied and included "old favorites" and well as some more creative dishes. I particularly liked the artichoke heart salad which wasn't exactly what I expected (it really was all "hearts") but was delicious. I actually liked that the portions weren't ginormous (nor were the prices, for midtown anyway). I'll definitely return.

Quite Bad

By NorthWestEastSouth |

Reading the complimentary reviews of this place I had to wonder if I was at the correct restaurant. Various reviews suggested that this was one of the finest restaurants in NY. I actually wondered if I’d get a table at lunch without a reservation. To my surprise the place was empty at the lunch hour except for one table and mine. The service is cold and indifferent. The food was—let’s be honest here—terrible. I had an appetizer of artichoke hearts and fava beans and then a lamb dish with potatoes. Both were poorly prepared and the artichokes seemed a few days old. The lamb and potatoes had all the flavors of a school cafeteria meal. Mushy everything with no special finesse to match what amounted to a $50 lunch. I am a decent cook (not great but good) and I would never serve this sort of cooking to anyone. Give this place a miss!

The best Turkish restaurant in New York

By Selim Ö |

It is one of the best restaurants in NewYork. Amazing food, good service, nice venue. Definitely try Lahmacun, Kokoreç, Ali Nazik, Lentil Soup, Shepherd Salad and halva.

Outstanding

By Farooq Shahzad |

Excellent food. Very courteous staff. Never disappoints. The “Ali Nazik” is very very good. This is a regular place for me.

Mediterranean food

By Yaruma R |

Good choice of restaurants if you go with friends and family. Not to much space or standard for a NYC midtown. Service was great. Only one toilet. Menu is Mediterranean with choices of meat, chicken, lamb and seafood. Prices are standards for NYC

This is the real McCoy.

By BigTravelingMan |

Very authentic. I sat near the door in this bustling quaint restaurant with marble topped tables and watched as many Turks stopped in to eat. This is a good bar I use for judging the authenticy of a restaurant The owner greeted as many of the guests as he could at the door and made it a point to stop by each table to say hello and make sure all was well. The entirely Turkish staff was very knowledgable and this is important because there were many specials that were not on the menu and were a real treat. Every thing I ate was fantastic. Ezo Gelin (Yogurt soup), lahmacun (Turkish spiced ground lamb pizza). Beyin (lambs brain) and a shepards salad with the fresh made bread made my day.

Wish I could give them 3.5 stars

By Allen S |

My wife had stuffed cabbage (one of her favorite dishes) and really liked it. I had manti dumplings. Not very interesting. One note flavor. Service was okay but not great. Ambiance was quite pleasant.

Outstanding Turkish cuisine

By YYC_wayfarer |

My wife and I dined here recently for a late lunch and decided to do a table of mezes rather than a full meal. Good decision since we were able to sample much more this way. Everything we ordered, too numerous to mention here, was fantastic. Authentic Turkish food. I've traveled extensively in Turkey and found that the dishes not only were genuine, but they also had geographic differences. I've had Çiğ köfte many different times as well as Sigara böreği and they taste wildly different depending on where you go in Turkey. This restaurant seemed to have a full blend of the various regions unique flavours. Serving staff were Turkish to the letter, which means tremendously hospitable. Prices were reasonable for Manhattan. The simple fact that as I sat in the restaurant at 3 pm on a Saturday and heard only Turkish spoken at all of the other occupied tables should tell volumes. I heard a rumour that they do a traditional Turkish breakfast there as well but need to confirm. If so, I shall gorge myself on sucuk ve beyaz peynir! Go, trust me, just go and explore this culinary delight.

Loved the food!

By Foodie_from_Victoria |

3 of us went there and had some amazing food. We ordered one main couse - osso buco and a whole bunch of mezes (little plates) - muhammara, fried eggplant w tomatoes, grilled octopus, borek, braised artichokes. It was all so good. Ordered some mezes to take back to the hotel for the next day and had it for lunch.

A LITTLE BIT OF ISTANBUL IN NEW YORK

By John A |

Istanbul is a great favourite and it is where I first sampled Turkish food. I happened on this restaurant quite by chance when staying at the nearby One UN Hotel. The staff were very helpful in explaining the dishes. The service was fine and not overbearing while the cuisine was very tasty. It was quiet but there was a good atmosphere and all-in-all it was a very pleasant evening. I rounded-off with apple tea, which was a great favourite during my visits to Istanbul.

Excellent, friendly meal

An after theater dinner at 10pm, we were delighted by this new find. Excellent service, and a creative menu, try the lamb and the stuffed cabbage.

A Must Try

Tasty

By Jay S |

We enjoyed a late lunch here during a recent visit to NYC. Hummus, calamari, spicy shish kabob, all were quite tasty. Prices were a little high for lunch (no separate lunch menu), but the portions were large so we did not really want much of a dinner.

Good Turkish food

By MattModine |

One of the best Turkish restaurants in NYC. Pretty expensive. We had a "Greek salad" which was nothing nest classic Greek salad and came at a whopping 20 bucks. Our entrees were 30 bucks each and the sea bass was huge but could have been fresher. Get the borek!

Delicious food, friendly service

By AmandaInRI |

I have been to Sip Sak twice this summer. The food is delicious. There are many choices on the menu that you will be happy with. Service is always good, and ready to make recommendations for which Turkish wine you may like. I am in love with their red lentil soup. Great place to go for lunch or dinner!

Delicious Turkish food. Don't miss out!

By Vasudha S |

We had the mixed plate and borek for starters, followed by adana kebab and lamb ossobuco with eggplant for the main course. The food was delicious, and the service superb. Order multiple dishes and share to taste everything! We were served Turkish tea after the meal was over. Definitely will go back when in New York next.

Authentic, original Turkish

By Tracey |

I travel to New York 2-3 times a year and I always make time for Sip Sak. The food is wonderful and the owner is often on hand and will help you choose or make something special. I love the eggplant salad appetizer--it is so good! Fish, lamb -- everything is wonderful. Great atmosphere too.

Locals favorite...

By AlfredoW |

Sip Sak is a solid option for Turkish/Greek food. Nothing is fancy, but the food quality is outstanding. We used to order their short ribs, one of the best in the city, but now we order more of their vegetarian mussaka. The fish and chicken are also very solid options. Highly recommend it.

I loved this restaurant in every way!!

By AnneNewton |

The food is beautifully presented, very fresh, and tasted amazingly. The dining room is very nice, with lovely old world ambience including a tin plated ceiling. Our night there was perfect. Our waiter Yunus, was charming and he was eager to make sure that we enjoyed the food of his homeland as much as he does. Which we definitely did! His recommendations were as promised. (try the octopus!- really really good!) When he insisted on bringing me a second dessert (on the house) because I could not make up my mind which one to have because everything looked so good, (and I rarely even consider eating any desserts!), I offered to share my wealth with the neighboring couple, and happily they accepted. (Ok, I realize this is not the usual thing to do and my husband at first appeared mortified, but the couple was willing and then thanked us repeatedly. I think it added to their night out too! ;.) They too agreed that the food was all perfectly done and presented, and that the restaurant was a very special place. It was also very validating to see how many Turkish people were at the adjoining tables and how happy they seemed to be with their choices as well. I can't wait to go back.

Great for afternoon snack

By MaryGB619 |

Stopped here on a whim with friends in the late afternoon. A bottle of rose and a table full of snacks is just want we needed. The food was fantastic. Cacik was one of the best things I have eaten lately, it was so fresh and the bread served with it was heavenly! The shrimp was also a table hit, as was the Shepherd's Salad. I would highly recommend checking it out if you are in the area. The service and atmosphere were perfect for a casual meal with friends.

Food was great; management awful

By Jill C |

Ate dinner here a week ago. Evening started off perfectly- server was informative and so so nice (we were a group of 6). Ordered a few bottles of wine and, as always , checked vivino to see true cost. Boy we we shocked to see a $12 retail being sold here for $60+. However, enjoyed all our food and the eve. When finished wanted to talk to manager about the markup- not expecting ANYTHING! We drank the wine and ate all our food. Just wanted him to know we thought it was a bit much to overcharge by that much. MISTAKE: he became extremely combative- in tone of voice and body language and then would not let it end! His language in a restauant with families was abhorrent. No matter how good the food, I would never step foot in there again, nor recommend it. Not sure what happened to civility, but it sure does not exist in this man/ owner/manager. And out poor server looked terrified...stay away...

Great Turkish restaurant

I enjoyed this place. The staff were great and attentive but not overly so. I only had one dish - the spicy lamb, but it was great on a nice bread (chipatta?) base. I would come here again.

So far, I'm impressed. Very impressed. Not cheap for takeout. My Chicken Shish Kebab served with yogurt garlic sauce over crisp pita bread runs $14.50. Serving sizes are standard for takeout. I may be disappointed that I still haven't found a favorite cheapo turkish delivery, but I have to admit the chicken was excellent, smothered and served over sauce-logged breadcrumbs. I will order from here again.

Good but pricy

By John M |

I have been here several times over the years and while the food is always quite good, it seems the prices are unpredictable and have gotten higher. However, the calf liver is delicious.

From a family favorite to failing fantastically!

By Jeremy K |

SipSak was a favorite of my wife and I for several years after it opened in 2004. The food was always terrific, service warm and friendly, and always a great bargain. It was our neighborhood go to from 2005-2009 until we moved from New York. Recommending it to three work colleagues for a late night bite earlier this week, I was appalled by the incredibly rude, belligerent behavior of the owner after I complained about my bill and the charge of US$105 dollars for a mixed grill plate for three people (that was incredibly small and comprised of a bit of modest portion of chicken, lamb, and beef burger, and a lot of rice and vulgar wheat). Keep in mind SipSac featured for many years in the renowned New York ‘cheap eats’ guide. I also objected to the waiter’s inclusion of a mandatory 20% tip for our table of four for the pretty lousy service. Clearly from my experience and the reviews posted here, SipSac’s hay day is long over and customers would be well advised to give this restaurant a miss and patron any of the many other establishments in the neighborhood.

DONT GO TO THIS RESTAURANT! Very bad service

By Majed A |

We were recommended this restaurant by a family friend who visits New York regularly. He said it has the best Turkish food in town. Based on that, my father and I went for dinner this evening. The server seated us down and gave us two menus. She asked what we would like to drink and then left. only to come back 5 minutes later asking what we wanted to order. I ordered an appetizer and then hesitated for the main course so I asked her a few questions. While I was asking she said that she was in a hurry (with an attitude!) and if I wanted more time she'll come back later. So i said no I don't need more time, I was simply asking questions about the menu. I gave her my order! My father then told her that if she was in a hurry, then she shouldn't have come to us in the first place asking if we were ready or not and that her attitude was not good and that we will not eat here if this is how we will be treated. She said "Okay bye!" While we were leaving, we saw the manager, and we informed him of the incident and that its a shame because we really wanted to try this place. He said that he was sorry and just continued his conversation with some other diners. The least he could've done, in my opinion, was to tell her off and invite us back in but that didn't happen. I don't recommend anyone going to this restaurant!!

Excellent Turkish

By AndrewJohn2014 |

Looking for something different then Sip Sak offers a challenging range of dishes which are delicious. The place has a great atmosphere suitable for casual dinning. We were guided by our waiter and tried a number of dishes we had never had before and we were pleasantly surprised. I recommend the Eggplant Musakka. Word of warning, the wine list is a little limited but the food is worth the visit.

Authentic Turkish food!

Last time we had Turkish food this good we were in Bodrum! Service, food quality and presentation were spot on. Highly recommended

Overpriced And Perfunctory

By Philip G |

The food was good and the dishes tasty at Sipsak, but the prices are ridiculously high for what you get at this Turkish restaurant. $168.00 for two people including 2 glasses of wine, 2 weak Vodka cocktails, two appetizers and two entrees, is a shocking reminder of how careful you have to be dining in NYC. The room is plain and shabby at best. Service by two attractive women is more eye candy than professional. The ambiance is kind of sad and not urbane at all. In Turkey, design and cool are an integral part of the culture. Not at Sipsak. The food was good, but not worth the pricing and the experience. Sipsak was a great disappointment.

Disappointing experience

By walker_in_the_woods |

This used to be a nice and reliable place for a business lunch or dinner in busy Midtown, however the last time I went there the experience was bad. Food was only mediocre. Salad very small and mushy, eggplant stew oily. As we questioned their pricing (5 dollars for a few dry crumbs of "feta cheese", which is not mentioned in the menu), the waiter was quite rude in her response. After complaining about the behavior, the restaurant's response was not an apology, but they told us that we spent too little money in their restaurant, and that they were only wasting their table and time on us.

Like Being in Istanbul.

Simple but delicious and authentic Turkish food. You can go completely vegetarian and gluten free here without asking and walk out feeling thoroughly sated.

Very tasty mid-Eastern food in a neighborhood we don't think of as a culinary destination. Service good as well and it's reasonably priced. Even the simple salad was wonderful. Eggplant and lamb dishes were a hit. Decor is casual but acceptable for dinner. Relaxed neighborhoody atmosphere. It's great to know there's a decent place to eat over there.

Excellent Turkish Cusine

We dined at Sip Sak for the first time last night and really enjoyed their excellent Turkish food and wine. We recently returned from Istanbul and found Sip Sak had wonderful authentic dishes, including the spicy lamb kebabs, grilled octopus, the Ali Nizar eggplant dish and the pistachio baclava. It was a great experience and is highly recommended.

Great food, great decor, dodgy waitress

By JANENARELLE_11 |

The decor is great, the food was wonderful BUT our waitress had a runny nose and looked ill which made me nervous. The wine was delicious but I was nervous she was going to get me sick! I would recommend eating here but maybe scan the staff for illness first. I would go back for sure. The lamb was yummy. MANGIA

I can't even tell you what we ate, but the food, service, atmosphere were terrific

The place was pretty packed for a weeknight. The gentleman at the door was warm and charming and managed to fit us in. We were served seamlessly by at least four different people, each very happy to help us choose our wine (they were all unfamiliar), dinners, and dessert. We selected several items to share - can't recall the Turkish names but here were crispy rolled things filled with cheese to die for, a shrimp app that was delicious, and lamb that was lean and tender and lovely. On the server's recommendation we took a chance on a dessert option we were wary about, so he brought us complimentary baklava too, just to be sure we had something we'd like. For an excellent dinner in NYC the price was palatable, too! We did feel a bit rushed, though -- that's why only 4 stars.

Gem of a place!

We were staying in a hotel a couple of blocks away and wanted a late dinner on our last night after, we chose this place as it was close and had both veggie and meat options so would suit both diners. Turned out to be a fantastic find; really friendly and helpful staff and absolutely delicious food. We both went in saying we just wanted something light but both demolished our food as it was so tasty. Definitely recommended!

Good food

Wife and I have wanted to try this 2nd avenue restaurant for while! Not disappointed.... I ordered the Turkish meatballs and the wife had the sea bass. I recommend to ask for a side of yogurt w/ the meatballs to complement the flavor of the meat. We also ordered two appetizers the grill octopus and sizzling shrimp ... both excellent .

Confirming our earlier visit to Sip Sak, this restaurant is really excellent.

We dined here a year ago on a dining tour of NYC, and with fond memories we wanted to go back this time on a busy Friday night. The meze were just delicious, and the octopus and lamb dishes were sensational. We tried two different Turkish red wines and they were surprisingly good. Service was excellent. Sip Sak is not a fancy, trendy restaurant, but it provides honest and mouthwatering food with warm friendly service in a bustling atmosphere. What more can one ask for? You will not be disappointed here. Highly recommended.

Interesting and tasty Turkish Food

The wait staff was attentive and offered us a sample of their spanakopita and taunted us with it's the best.....well it was excellent. We ordered a number of the appetizers and were impressed with the pea dish, the roasted veggies, etc. Our entree was quite good, a meat dish. Overall I would return and try some additional dishes. As a note.... there are two locations owned by the chef who is primarily in the other restaurant.

Local Turkish restaurant with excellent food but crowded and noisy

By PRexx |

Busy, crowded restaurant. Good choice of very tasty dishes. Reasonable prices. Super bread. Terrific chopped salad and shrimp for appetizers. Fun to be in but loud. Attentive staff. Nice place to have in neighborhood; could see going here monthly. Be sure to make reservations.

Very Tasty Food

Today, 11/7/15, was the third time that I have eaten here in the last 12 days. That in itself indicates that I liked the food here. My recommended dishes are: STARTERS: (a) Hot Yogurt Soup (served with bits of mint in it), see my photo below. (b) Cacik (appetizer). MAIN COURSES: (1) Lamb Shank with Smoked Eggplant Puree (a special of the day). (2) Roasted Lamb (Tandir) with caramelized onions ($23.50), not listed on the menu but usually available. (3) Good, but not as pleasing as items i and 2, was the Short Rib, the fault was not with the flavor but with the lack of moistness. More moistness would have made it even more flavorful than it was. (4) Not as impressive as items 1 and 2, listed above, the Semolina Halva dessert was just okay. The service was attentive and very pleasant. Go there with a good appetite.

Wonderful dinner

Brought a group of 8 out of towners for dinner. None had experienced Turkish food before. We had a great meal with good service. Our waiter helped us select a variety of shared appetizers. As reported, it is a bit loud with the tin ceiling.

A wasted meal

Did I dine in the same restaurant as recent reviews describe their experience? Actually, I did. I live a five minute walk from Sip Sak. Not a very fine meal about three years ago. This opinion is unchanged after last evenings dinner for six. Although lighting is dim, the restaurant is comfortable enough. A friendly although incompetent wait staff. Food prices very dear, especially for such small portions. Remember, this place is a simple, informal restaurant, and its wine list is what you would expect. However the astronomical prices were unexpected. That is, mark ups of five or six times retail price. There are numerous Turkish restaurants in Manhattan, most serving higher quality meals, and with better service and with fair prices.

Perfect example of Turkish cuisine. Very delicious and healty dishes. Among the hundreds Turkish restaurants in NYC this is the best and most autantic one. Especially i would reccoment Adana Kebab. Owner Orhan has Adana origin himself. Tayfur ozkaynak

Had the hummus for the table to share. We ordered three entrees to share - roasted short ribs with mashed potatoes; the lamb and fish specials. The short ribs was the best out of the three. All entrees came with salad greens on the side. Have some Efes beer to wash it down.

Wonderful

This upscale Turkish restaurant located in Midtown is a fantastic place for more exquisite cuisine. We were seated promptly and they were able to accommodate our party of 8 people. The appetizers are a bit small but they are definitely worth it. I recommend the Mediterranean salad. It is very clean and looks very upscale.
