We went here while visiting New York. The food was very good, but the evening was let down by a few things; table too small for 4 people, room was very noisy, waiter put a bottle of tomato ketchup on the table (was it because we were British?), waiter seemed to lose interest in us and focus on the larger group of locals. Can’t fault the food, the steaks, lobster tail and Mac n cheese were excellent. But the overall experience was average.

The service is generally good but is not a quiet spot. We enjoy the roast beef hash snd creamed spinach which is hard to find. They pour large drinks snd it us a good spot to sit back with friends or acquaintances. One isf our favorites.

As longtime supporters of S&W’s Midtown restaurant and grille, and having previously written that their ribeye was one of the finest steaks we’d ever eaten, we are sad to have to acknowledge that one of the storied emperors of red meat and potatoes is definitely shedding its clothes. Whether it is iceberg lettuce drowning in too thin blue cheese dressing, tuna tartar with more tomato than tuna, dry as a bone halibut without the menu advertised sauce vierge - “that’s the way we serve it” says the waiter, - tasteless S&W cut of prime rib, lukewarm to cold hash browns and servers rushed off their feet, all in all, a sad waste of money. Of course if the reason for going is to be able to say “we went to Smith & Wollensky,” then full speed ahead and enjoy the experience!

Went to this spot with some friends from work. The food was great, and the service was excellent, thanks to the B team - Brad and Mr. B!!! Highly recommend!

We took one of our large customers out to dinner on Thursday 4/10 in midtown; had a group of 7 and we lucked out and actually got the private room in the back that looks into the kitchen. The food was amazing as always (we've been to multiple S&W locations around the US) - but what set this apart was our server - Brad. Hands down was the BEST waiter I've ever had in 20 years of entertaining clients at upscale restaurants around the county. What stood out was the attention to detail that Brad displayed. Example: we asked him to take a photo...but unlike every other time people ask a server to take a picture (hundreds of times per month there I'd suspect), Brad had clearly taken the time to learn how each phone's OS/camera functioned best. iPhone, Android, flash on, flash off, .5 vs standard....all without being asked...he directed everyone on each aspect of the shot, had multiple pics taken in probably 45 seconds, and they were all fantastic. Again...this guy's job is to be a WAITER, but he had clearly taken the time and the initiative to learn how to master taking photos like a pro...which he recognized was part of the overall dining EXPERIENCE. This is just one of multiple examples I noted with Brad from that night. We've been to Smith & Wollensky more than a dozen times in various locations around the country: steaks were just as amazing as any other S&W location, drinks were just as on point as any other S&W location...yet this was the best meal we've ever had at any of them. The difference was, in a word: Brad. Sometimes it's the little things that can make the major thing so memorable!

What a fantastic night, from the minute we walked through the doors. The lovely Ryan and two gorgeous girls...welcomed us and led us to the bar first, where Dermot took over, and we had some fab pre dinner cocktails! THANKS Dermot, really made my birthday extra special 😘 and when we thought it couldn't get any better we ..how wrong we were. The food in the restaurant was amazing...steaks cooked to EXACTLY how we asked for..... ( seriously everyone, ignore any negative reviews you might read, because this restaurant is unbelievably good) and trust me...we travel alot... Richard & Frankie are superb....they certainly know how to look after their customers...well done guys...you are so good at what you do 👏👏👏👏 Best Restaurant in NYC, in my opinion, and I'm one fussy girl.

For who want a good steakhouse this is a more than recommanded adress. Steak are very good, the sides also. Good choice of wine. But the specials are not so well presnetd by the server... And when we discover than there were softshell crab, and want to change 6 oysters to the SSC, 4 mn after order..."too lte"... OK... The in the middle of the appetizer service while I have aten 3 of my oysters the server arrive and say" oh I see you like it...do you want really to change for the SSC...??" Inadequate... Or perhaps the way he want to be interesting... Classic dessert.

Fabulous professional friendly service from hostess to bartender to wait staff. Excellent food perfectly prepared. Leave room for the coconut cake!

A delicious and fun time. Our waiters / sommelier were quick to describe and it recommended dishes. Also helpful with international wine selection. We all thoroughly enjoyed our steak, 2 had Fillet and my husband and I shared a large T Bone. Cooked to perfection. Very good, Thankyou

The large prime rib is too big to eat. The clam chowder is large, so if two people share it, I think you can fully enjoy the steak 🥩. The filet is tender and you can enjoy the taste of the meat. It goes well with your favorite Napa wine.

A long-surviving New York tradition every meat lover should experience. Excellent steaks and beef roasts and a varied if conventional menu. Service is crisp and relatively fast. Beware: if you do not specify the smaller portion, you will automatically receive the larger one. Their house California blend red is quite satisfactory and decently priced

In many ways I wanted to love the experience here, but too many things were “off” keeping the price in mind. The good: - food was tasty and well prepared - wine list extensive - service friendly The bad - the upstairs room we were placed in was completely devoid of charm and was packed. -noice level was deafening - had to decidedly should across our table - while nice service had misses like not bringing white wine withappetizer —> Did not at all feel like a high-end place For the price (all in 800 usd for three adults and two young kids who just shared in sides) thats way too expensive Would go to Gallaghers or Peter Lugar next time instead

Eating here is to enjoy the quintessential New York experience. The vibe is much better at lunch where the locals meet to converse, follow the stock market, and keep the "Mad Men" experience alive. Dinner is great, but far more touristy. The food is extraordinary, even if you don't care for red meat. I love the pork chop and The Wedge. You may need to bring two credit cards to pay the bill, but it's worth it for the atmosphere alone.

For the wine steward: The primary differences between Louis Jadot Chablis 2022 and Louis Jadot Chardonnay 2022 stem from their origins, styles, and characteristics due to the different terroirs in which the grapes are grown: Region and Terroir: Louis Jadot Chablis 2022: This wine is produced in the Chablis region of Burgundy, France, which is known for its cooler climate and limestone-rich soils. Chablis wines are typically unoaked, showcasing a lean, mineral-driven style with high acidity. Louis Jadot Chardonnay 2022: This wine can be sourced from various parts of Burgundy, such as the Mâconnais, Côte de Beaune, or Côte Chalonnaise, and often sees some oak aging depending on the specific label. The terroir here can vary, leading to a richer, fuller-bodied style compared to Chablis. Flavor Profile: Chablis 2022: Chablis wines are generally characterized by crisp acidity, green apple, citrus, flinty minerality, and sometimes a hint of white flowers. They are typically unoaked, which preserves the purity and freshness of the Chardonnay grape. Chardonnay 2022: Depending on its origin within Burgundy, Louis Jadot Chardonnay can have a broader flavor profile, often showing ripe apple, pear, hints of tropical fruits, and sometimes buttery or toasty notes if oak-aged. This wine tends to be rounder and creamier on the palate than Chablis. Style and Structure: Chablis: Light to medium-bodied with a focus on minerality, steely acidity, and a clean, refreshing finish. It’s more austere and zesty. Chardonnay: Typically fuller-bodied with more pronounced fruitiness, softer acidity, and, if oaked, additional complexity from notes of vanilla or spice. Food Pairing: Chablis pairs excellently with seafood, oysters, sushi, and light salads due to its high acidity and mineral notes. Chardonnay pairs well with richer dishes like roasted chicken, creamy pasta, and soft cheeses, especially if it has undergone oak aging. Overall, while both wines are made from the Chardonnay grape, their distinct regional influences and winemaking approaches create two very different tasting experiences.

I had not been for a few years due to covid. It was great to be back. The New York cut as good as ever and the creamed spinach. The house Cabernet also great. Good attentive service.

I visited this restaurant in NY for the first time in a while. The porterhouse filet was surprisingly delicious. There are several types of bread, including my favorite raisin bread, campagne, and creamy butter bread. I love the burrata, creamy spinach (this is the best), baked potato, and strawberry raspberry. The red wine was also good, and it was a satisfying dinner.

We dined here last night as a party of four. The service here is remarkable. We found the food average. My wife had the Pea Soup and Tuna Tartare and she really enjoyed it. I had the large Filet medium rare and it was clearly quite rare. My daughter had the small Filet medium rare and it was also clearly rare. My daughters friend had the small Sirloin medium rare and it was properly cooked. All were tasty, but the Roquefort on the small Filet was way over the top sour wise. We shared the Potato Gratin, Creamed Spinach and Mac and Cheese were all good as were the Cheesecake and Chocolate Pot. Pricing is high but expected in NYC. The S&W Private Reserve Cab is a good buy at $79.

If I could rate this a zero I would. Never in my life have I been so disappointed with my food. So bad I’ve even made a trip advisor account just for this. We are visiting from England and fancied some high quality steak, and at this price point we thought that’s what we were going to get. The hash browns and mushrooms were freezing cold and the macaroni cheese and waffle fries do not live up to their $14 price tag, it tasted like they were done in the microwave. Onto the steaks. Never in my life have I been so disgusted by a steak. Me and my dad ordered a $74 Pure Rib Steak each and ordered it medium rare. With a good vet, our steaks would’ve come back to life with how rare it was. It was surrounded by the slimy substance which made eating the steak very challenging. To top it off, it’s smelt like my dog. Not just any dog, but my little dog Henry, to which was very off putting. No steak should smell like dog. The steak was majorly just fat, resulting us to have about 4/5 bites of actual meat. My sister got a $54 sirloin which was actually done medium rare by request, but was completely bland. Additionally, these price points for the steaks were just for the steaks, not sides or sauces etc. We thought they were going to be high quality so just went along with it, our mistake (pardon the pun). Basically felt like she was eating a sole of a shoe. The total of this meal came to $320. Reluctantly we paid, didn’t make a fuss and just got on with it. The waiter took our card and processed the payment away from the table, which I think is rude enough as itself, then stated how the price was “without the tip”. We said we know as we were obviously not going to tip after this experience, resulting in the waiter to go off in a strop and went and told his colleague, resulting in the staff giving us death stares. The worst food at a restaurant ever. If you’re ever in New York, do not go here, better getting food from the bin quite frankly. Wouldn’t even give it to my dog (borderline cannibalism since it smelt like him). All jokes aside, it was generally an awful experience, would strongly advise not going here.

We’d looked forward to a birthday dinner at the NYC site since we’d had wonderful meals at both sites in Las Vegas and In South Beach. The anticipation was better than the result though. It started out pretty good, crab cake and shrimp cocktail were good but the wife asked for a medium filet, I asked for a medium rare strip. Strip was right, filet not so much, it was rarer than the strip. Sent it back, came back medium well. A lot to pay for an improperly cooked steak. We both commented as well it didn’t appear to be prime beef either, more like choice. They did comp her wine, a glass of port for me and desserts a pair of desserts so there’s that. With the choices out there, probably won’t be back.

As opposes to other S&W restaurant in the US, the original S&W is not even suitable for the most basic tourists ! If not for the meat (but now steakhouses sell decent meat mostly everywhere in nyc) this institution is on a real decline… big time ! The place is overpacked which is not acceptable in these post-covid times… and the outside terrace is empty but they try to force guests to sit outside… Looking around obviously the employees dont care about the house and the clients.. they should then resign and leave their place to new ones… We noted butlers with dirty clothes/ stained shirts, behaving rude, flirting with the female employees, obviously more concerned by their private affairs more than guests… they have no interest in their job, showing some total disrespect for the house and the clients … They prefer flooding glasses with liquids, throwing plates on your table, sometimes the beverage or food on you and no respect for the guests… Sometimes we even felt like trapped in a candid camera but actually is was not. You should skip this decadent place for other more friendly and tasty places … Prefer keens or del frisco or other adresses all around !

Wine Experience wines are not as cheap and delicious as they used to be. It's crowded and highly discouraged, The meat has also been reduced to a much lower level and is now an old steakhouse.

Eh. I have been to so many better steakhouses that we were really disappointed. The soft shell crab was really greasy. The filet mignon was okay but nothing super special. Our server was great and very attentive, and the restaurant is beautiful. Would I go here again or recommend it? No. WAY TOO overpriced.

Absolutely fantastic Filet Mignon, cooked to perfection. Onion rings were really good. Great service and excellent choice of wines. Old school charm, must be experienced!

Atmosphere and service good. Food very disappointing, if the same food was severed at the lower “class” restaurant you’d said it was just ok..a bit average overall

Great food and cocktails. Spotty service. S&W has a policy not to sit a party until everyone has arrived. I can understand that for a large party. But I made a reservation for just three people. My wife - it was her birthday dinner on me - and I arrived on time, but her cousin was running a bit late. The hostess would not budge. We got drinks at the bar. Her cousin arrived 20 minutes late. The service was uncoordinated. We had different servers during the course of our dinner. I asked several times for a bag for my wife’s cousin’s leftover. Ignored every time. I asked for the check when we were clearly done with our desserts. Ignored. I tried again with my arms waving in the air. The servers did the Dionne Warwick again and walked on by. I had enough at this point and went straight to the hostess to get the issues finally resolved. Not a good impression, especially on my wife’s birthday. And she picked this restaurant. Well, I’m lucky there are several good steakhouses near where I live. I’m not going back to S&W.

Asked for a well done steak but got a rare one. ‘Chef’ told me he cooks steak to HIS liking. No lunch for me. Never going back.🤦♂️

We had a very enjoyable dinner in the food was excellent. They were extremely busy and the volume level in the dining room was excessively loud. If you are looking for a place to have an intimate dinner, this is not the place. That said, my steak was cooked perfectly and the accompanying were excellent. The waiter did a great job considering the busy night.

The smith and wollinsky steakhouse is far from being a good one anymore. Living on the old reputation of the place, the meat is good but nothing exceptional and way too much grilled. Tasted like it was boiled ! And the staff is not only bad in service but also unhelpful and unpleasant. The blame is certainly not them but the poor managing team which seems absent and I viable there. You should prefer the empire steak house one block away or other around this place.

Absolutely great restaurant with super tasty steaks. We had the wine dinner. Everything was perfect. Unfortunately it was relatively loud.

We enjoyed Christmas Day lunch at this first class steak house restaurant. This was my second visit but my son and wife’s first visit. The service and welcome was so good from the second we stepped into the establishment. The atmosphere is relaxing but there is an undertone of quality and decadence. Three members of staff checked in with us during the meal. The staff are immaculately dressed. Extensive wine list to suit a variety of budgets. The rib eye Cajun rub steak was exceptional, so was the New York strip. Sides of Mac and cheese and sautéed potato were beautifully done and rich. As you would expect super size steaks and portions to go there feeling empty! Finished with chocolate cake and carrot cake (shared between the three of us). Offered a complimentary drink at the end of the meal which was a nice touch. Wonderful Christmas Day meal which was very special. Thank you.

We have been going to Smith & Wollensky for 20 years plus, but I feel compelled to write a review after our most recent experience. When we sat down we noticed two open bottles of bottled water, one still, one carbonated. When we mentioned to the server that we prefer tap water, he replied, "Well, it's easier for me to serve from the bottles." We repeated that we wanted tap water and he begrudgingly went to get it. We had a round table in a corner, but the person sitting on the outside got bumped every time the cart came out with food for a table. The noise level is so loud that you can barely hear the person next to you let alone the people seated across from you. The caesar salad was drowning in tasteless dressing and the wedge salad was the same. The meat we ordered was okay, but again not great and the au poivre lacked taste. One person ordered the dover sole which was overcooked and dried out. Not worth the huge price tag. The meunière sauce that came with it on the side had a base of mayonnaise and did not have any similarity to a proper meunière sauce. The server was not attentive even despite the fact that we ordered two expensive bottles of wine. Overall, a huge disappointment and will not return.

There was a short period when things weren’t moving in the right direction, management probably concentrating on growing by opening new locations. But it’s over now, luckily. Steaks are again terrific, service – top of the line and prices, well, NYC prices for fine dining. I like to eat on the grill side (entrance from 49th), they have the same kitchen and you can order from the main menu. **

Visited this restaurant as a family during a 30 hours visit from London to New York. My husband, a pilot was on his last layover and retiring the next day on his flight back to London. Had advised the restaurant of the special occasion and the whole occasion was superb. The steaks were outstanding, the service impeccable and they kindly treated us to a couple of glasses of red wine and some cheesecake. Our visit was so special and will be etched into our memories. Thank you!

Great steak, wonderful service…particularly Jack, who could not have been more helpful. We had a superb meal….and the wine was good too.

We flew to New York for my big birthday and wanted to go to Smith & Wollensky again after a long time. In summary, I can only rave about it. We had a fabulous evening. Service, friendliness, food, atmosphere, everything was just perfect. There are certainly countless steakhouses in New York. But if you really want to experience and eat something unique, you can't go past Smith & Wollensky. For me, it is and remains the best. We had a wonderful evening.

This is a long time fine dining steakhouse in Manhattan very near the major financial institutions in MidTown. It features its unique dry aged beef cuts. Also, this place is notable because there is the location for Warren Buffet's "charity" lunch every year. Diners should focus on the big cuts of beef such as the porterhouse. The service is professional, but cold. It always has been. It used to be owned and operated by a sole proprietor, but now it is owned by an investment fund. There are other locations across the country.

Avoid thursdays, fridays and Saturdays at S&W - if not at all. This former ikon of steaks has totally given up on itself. An all in concept where hoards of “spring-breakers” shout, scream before entering toilets puking from the all you can drink and eat - to the poor waiters that must cope with circus to get to their livehood in tips. The legality of the persons on the location due to fire regulation I would highly question as it seems even more tables are there than ever. If you want it cheap, extreemly loud and are more than 8 persons that wants to get wasted over steaks before you hit town this is your place to come. For the rest it was a nightmare where you just wanted it to end.

Sometimes a bit of attitude and Manhattan pretentiousness works, and if the food is good, then I can live with the theatre. And in this instance, the food is superb. Expensive but worth the money. If you’re from the UK and know London well, then think of Rules restaurant in Maiden Lane, and S&W is a bit like this but with some New York urgency about it. Great steaks, interesting sides. Lovely oysters. Yes, I’d definitely go back.

Our first trip was 23 yrs ago when getting off a plane from San Francisco for a late night dinner as they serve late. Our 3 month old was in his little carry on who was happy sleeping with the late night dinner sounds. We just went to celebrate that time and still had a great meal. The bar was packed with finally after work people and others, now with little Covid scare. Our dinner was amazing as it was a month before when my husband and son flew out to a Yankee game and had a great meal there. Our sommelier was great, well versed on their wines and has been with them for years. Because I don't eat that much, our son and I shared a backed potato, we all shared the sautéed spinach and a Caesar salad. Our son had a prime rib perfectly cooked. My husband and I shared the Porterhouse (For Two). We tend to order our steaks on the rare side as you can always ask the kitchen to add more heat to cook it a bit more. We're especially very kind to restaurants and SO happy if they survived during Covid. Especially since getting chefs, service employees has been a challenge. We'll be back again!

Fantastic. Steaks and service. Been going there for years. No longer go to Peter Lugas. No reason when we say in New York City

This place is top notch. The service was 💯, food excellent with unbelievable portions and house wine the nicest we've ever had. We loved it so much and our experience there with the staff was exceptional. We ended up going back two days later for lunch and that was excellent too. Nicest steak we ever tasted and we still talk about it some years later. We are heading to Smyth and Wollensky London on Friday and so excited. This restaurant is by far one of the best restaurants in NYC, can't wait to see what London has in store. 5+++++ stars - magnificent! We were on holidays from Ireland in NYC for 10 days and when we get back you'll be the first place we'll visit. 😁🇮🇪💚

Yes it's renowned as an amazing steak house but it's true. The food is sublime, beautifully cooked and presented, and the service is second to none. It is expensive but it's also great value when you look at the price versus what you get. Truly an amazing experience

Was in NYC for the weekend and was recommended S&W by work colleagues. When booking, as it was a celebration, I requested the table near the kitchen. The service and food was amazing ensuring that we had a great time.

The steaks are always perfect, every bite full of flavor. However, the service keeps getting better...our experience could have been scripted by Hollywood. Attentive, genuine servers knew what we wanted before asking and the manager made us feel like wall street titans.

Visited this iconic restaurant with 4. Friendly staff. Three of us had the filet mignon (tasted very good), the bone-in rib steak looked greyish and seemed to be “cooked” in the micro wave. The sides are OK but not very special. Al in all: not the best in town.

Classic restaurant but very confusing, the food didn't drive me crazy, the oysters weren't worth much, while the meat squares (maybe I ordered them wrong) were very seasoned, like the ash brown.

I had an unpleasant experience. I left a $20 tip on a 200$ bill, considering it a reasonable amount. However, the waiter came back to my table, pointed out that tips in the United States are expected to be at least 20%, and circled the recommended tips section on the receipt, indicating that I should fill in a larger amount in the tips section, with a disrespectful attitude. He wanted to pressure me into leaving a bigger tip, which is very unprofessional and made me feel very uncomfortable. I do not recommend this restaurant due to this experience, which completely ruined what could have been a pleasant meal.

Extraordinary quality meat and very good service. Cheese Macaroni have nothing to do with the original recipe. They bring them warm, dry and with very little flavor.

Great time at S&W! My two young girls ordered the filet medium rare, and they absolutely loved it. My husband and I ordered the crab cake and it was delicious! I'm originally from Maryland, and I loved it! The staff and especially Dennis were awesome :)

We love Smith & Wollensky in London so we just had to visit whilst in New York. We were hoping to be treated to a memorable meal but we were woefully disappointed. The split pea soup was very nice but the rest of the food left us underwhelmed. The steak was fatty and inedible and whilst it was refunded we came along for good food and we’re looking forward to a good steak rather than leaving hungry. As 2 females eating together, we both felt uncomfortable and wanted to leave as soon as possible as felt we were looked down on and weren’t good enough to be in the restaurant.

I had dinner with a colleague from the company. We had assorted lobsters, steak and cheesecake. They were all delicious. There was also a wide selection of wines. The service was good and comfortable. It took a reasonable amount of money to pay, but I recommend it to those with a budget.

For the best experience, visit between 2-5PM: they are open and there are very few customers, so they have time to take care of you leisurely. Order the bone-in ribeye accompanied by some French Red and enjoy. If you want to precede this with a scotch, you'll find out very generous drinks and superior service all the way

We went on a Thursday night for the 'weekend' wine and dine offer which for $95 dollars per person provides 'copious' amounts of wine and 3 courses which does not include sides. There was a choice of prosecco, rose, red or white wine. The latter two were undrinkable but the first two were nice. Food, calamari very good served with a very nice tomato sauce, good bread basket and our other starter of tomato with mozzarella was good but nothing to write home about. Sirloin steak again good but nothing to write home about, lemon pepper chicken ok, jacket potato with all the 'fixings' actually very tasty and the hash browns, 'meh'. Our waiter was a very nice gentleman who was running about like a madman but at no point were our glasses allowed to get even near empty and he checked we were happy on every course. So why such an average score. Well the final bill came to $291 dollars and we were squeezed onto a table which although it was for four and there were only two of us, only just fitted us and our food on it. Our table was so close to the one behind that myself and a diner behind me could not move without our chairs hitting each other. The noise level was so loud it was actually uncomfortable and everyone seemed to be quite drunk and I suppose the best description I can give is that there seemed a 'pressure to enjoy yourself as loudly and as brashly as possible with lots of testosterone in the air. This place does not even have a modicum of finesse, which at those prices is surprising, there are no quiet cosy corners in which to enjoy a dinner for two but it does what it says on the tin - but only that.

Wonderful call, sensational food with huge portions. Highlight for the service provided by waiter LIN, who enchanted us with such affection and dedication!

We had dinner at this restaurant during a stay in NY and were really satisfied on all fronts. Attentive and kind waiters, delicious meat, tender and generous quantities. Wines no less. Definitely recommended

This was a surprise prank meeting with my son in NY who was visiting NY from Ireland. The manageress & team played along brilliantly with the prank (basically telling my son that his reservation had been cancelled !!). However. more importantly the quality of the food & service was, like the other restaurants in this group) first class. I would say that it is not as flamboyant as London or Las Vegas (much smaller selection of steaks). That said we had a great night & to cap it off, deserts (unexpectedly) were on the house!! New York in general is very expensive (to Europeans) & S&W is no exception. That said, we dined in more expensive restaurants & didn't get the service / attention. BEWARE TIPPING (in general) - massive gratuity's 'recommended' already calculated for you (15%, if you are brave enough - to 25%!!)

Delicious restaurant and Hamit's attention was outstanding. His recommendations and kindness definitely made the experience memorable.

So my wife and I were at Thomas Keller’s LV restaurant two nights ago. It was very good. Food was appetising and the staff were extremely well trained. By way of background, we live in Australia. For whatever reason (apart from logical economic realities), the A$ exchange rate means that USA is relatively expensive for us - from breakfast through brunch, lunch, aperitif and dinner menus. So we think we know local, good quality ingredients and can be reasonably discerning (or believe we can be) in terms of value for money. We also think (rightly or wrongly) that we are reasonable judges (and will include Bray’s Waterfront in the UK to our comparison in a couple of weeks. This evening, we dined at a New York steakhouse institution - Smith and Wolensky (S&W). it’s located at The junction of 49th and 3rd. We’ve been there on our various NY visits over the years. Having retired, we (or as my wife would probably say, I,) look for ‘bargains’, where they might be found. So when we we saw that S&W had a Weekend Wine Dinner @ $95 per head, with a selection of accompanying wines included in the price, we were sold. Let’s just say, S&W did not skimp. Each serve, side was full size and delightful (steaks were great). Each wine option (Prosecco, sav blanc, rose or cab sav) was above average and flowed freely. While the natural inclination of waiters to diners such as us partaking in a ‘discount meal package’ might tend to be a little desultory, this was not the case with the tea that attended to our every whim. So thank you to S&W. We had a wonderful evening and a wonderful experience. Our guest, a first time S&Wer was truly impressed and will spread the word appropriately. In closing I must admit that, if I lived in Manhattan, my review might not be so glowing and truthful. But that’s only because we live in Australia and generally, can book a few months in advance to ensure we can get a table at our favourite (favorite) NY restaurant. To the S&W team, keep up the great work and tradition and once again, thanks to the team for looking after us.

Way too expensive food, and very noisy in the room. We had to sit and shout at each other. The tables are far too small. The toilets were not clean. All in all, this does not hold up compared to the crazy price.

Food was good . Large portions . Its a busy place, staff were just ok, but very busy. Not as good as it used to be.

Wow what a really atmospheric place with excellent service , Especially from Karim and the manager . We loved the food . The steak is to die for and the cheesecake and chocolate cake !

The restaurant has a vibe of the good old times. Professional and unique waiters with a thick new york accent ready to recommend you the top sellers. We had the thick cut bacon strips as starter and the porterhouse with sides. Meat was cooked perfectly although under seasoned for our taste. Worth a visit for sure!

Here we are..just arrived at the hotel I explain my overall assessment .. let's start with the meat .. we chose a Porterhouse to share which I have to be honest was very good, I had asked for a rare medium cooking and it was an advanced medium, whatever it can fit .. we took an easy easy asparagus without dressing, hospital style but it's okay .. We chose a glass of Californian wine I didn't know, promoted with the sufficiency We come to understand the global assessment .. they put us in a table next to the kitchen (oh well ..) and the density of the tables in the room is really high, it seemed to be in Varazze in mid-August, too much noise in the room, too annoying for my dinner and the waiter seemed in the way that of Fantozzi at New Year .. he brought us the glasses (nice full yay!!) in his hand... I must have been unlucky me .. careful at his table but too anxious during the meal, they will have orders to speed up dinner .. no dessert has had me I pay and I leave The best thing was the front girl who called me the taxi..lovely If I go back to NY I won't go back, tomorrow I'll go to another

Wonderful NYC landmark, large portions with hefty pricing to match, but well worth it. Delicious steaks and exquisitely prepared sides, vegetables that were very fresh. Great service, a bit noisy but not unbearable. Definitely a great choice for eat lovers and get the oysters, too!

Great place to create memories in a relaxed loud atmosphere. A fun night with great service and lovely food. Highly reccomemd the TB.

Smith & Wollensky isn't named for Smith & Wollensky. The names for the steakhouse at 797 3rd Avenue in New York City, at 49th Street, were picked randomly from the New York City telephone book. Opened in 1977. it has made a name for itself. Its USDA Prime, dry aged steaks are the cornerstone of the menu that also includes seafood, poultry and lamb. Servers recognize their dedication on their jackets: a star on the pocket denotes five years of service while a slash on the sleeve is one. The restaurant's USDA prime grade beef is dry-aged in house. At any given time, Smith & Wollensky is aging 7 to 12 tons of beef. Obviously, they take their steaks seriously. So my wife and I passed up Branzino and Dover Sole and filet mignon and veal chop and Scottish salmon in favor of porterhouse steak for two with potato gratin, whipped potatoes, creamed spinach and steamed broccoli. We started with shrimp cocktail, New England clam chowder, split pea soup and traditional Caesar salad. And we finished with baked Alaska for two, flambeed tableside with dulce de leche ice cream and toasted Italian meringue. Certainly nothing random about that meal.

THE END OF AN ERA—From the time that Smith and Wollensky took over the corner of 49 Street, we have made it our go to dinner for English Cut Roast Beef. Sadly last night we ate our last meal there. What use to be a delicious , juicy and very tender piece of meat has turn into a hunk of tough and rough looking meal that only a bear would dig into. When I sent it back to the kitchen the waiter returned to tell me that another cut would be the same and indeed it was. Yes there are many other chooses but even the beloved Blue Cheese salad wedge, was lacking in guess what BLUE CHEESE! This was a place where our friend’s would join us and be counted on for a really special dinner, NOT ANY MORE! TH

Always terrific. Top notch quality and service. Book a night at S&W and enjoy being taken care of.

The worst restaurant experience of my life. Was made to feel second class by staff. We were kept waiting 15 mins for our table even though it was clearly ready. Then after 60 minutes wait for our food we walked out refusing a complimentary meal from the manager - no way was I staying.

I have been here on a number of occasions so it has become a must go back if in New York. There are many other great restaurants but I always enjoy the food and the service. It is always busy and buzzing. See you next time.

You immediately sense that it is a traditional restaurant. A warm welcome, service runs smoothly and the steaks are memorable. You have to consider the price tag, but that's New York.

Sat at the full service bar on New Year’s Day and Brian, the bartender, was amazing. Very kind, informative, and welcoming. Everything you’d like to see in a bartender. The wedge salad and filet were amazing! I definitely recommend it!

Old school steakhouse frequented by plenty of old timers. Heavy on steak menu items and other traditional steakhouse options.

Had lunch ( Party of 6 ) . First time there. Genuine warm welcome by Roger the General Manager who took us to be seated. Vlado took care of our table. He was truly excellent - warm and friendly. He helped us with ordering the right quantity of food for the table. We went for Porterhouse Steaks with sides and everything was served to perfection. We wanted to end our vacation in NYC with something special and we were not disappointed ! It was superb

I had reservation and was seated as soon as I arrived. Wait staff greeted me and brought me my Manhattan and gave me a few minutes before asking if I was ready to order. I came here for the split pea soup which is one of my favorite dishes and other than being green with some croutons it was just a bland soup. I ordered a glass of wine and then they served the prime rib which was also not remarkable. Finished with the Carrot Cake which was the best part of the visit. I can skip this on any future visit to New York.

We visited on the occasion of our wedding anniversary. We booked in advance and when we arrived were shown to our table immediately. Our waiter was great and suggested the cote-de-boeuf which turned out to be a great choice. He also suggested the drinks, a bourbon based cocktail for the lady and some local beer for me. It was finished off with a coconut based dessert, which was delicious. All in all it was a great meal, superbly cooked and the service could not have been better. It doesn't come cheap but New York is expensive wherever you go. This restaurant is worth a visit. Thanks to all for a great experience.

Perfect New Year's Eve dinner, professional staff (the very good Italian manager), our waiter was very nice, fast service. The icing on the cake was that at 11.45 we left the restaurant and were inside the circle closed by the police, we had a terrace available to see the midnight fireworks in front of the London Eye. Beautiful

A superb restaurant, whether the setting or the quality of the products, not to mention the service! We wanted to taste American red meat and were not disappointed - it was excellent as well as apples wafers! Only downside... the price - 172 dollars for 2 potato steaks with still water .... but we are in the USA....

what a terrible experience .. ruined my daughters 13 year old b day arrived 10 minutes early, plenty of tables asked to be seated hostess told me to wait at bar with 13 year old kid, i mean perhaps liquor license should be ceased then she sat several people ahead of me for no reason telling me my specific table was paying, happened to be table basically in the kitchen (worst in house) dozens of nice open tables when we arrived and left finally sat down at 750 after asking again at worst table in house with dizens of open tables had to ask to move still wouldn’t give me a nice table saying they’re for more people tho almost all gad two sitting at them ordered steak medium plus came undercooked asked to be cooked more but they did not i mean 😪 on my kids b day life’s too sort to deal with such rudeness and terrible service !! and to think i dropped 6 figures there over last 30 years .. wow

We had to wait for 20 minutes while the table was actually ready: it is only when I asked for the third times that we were brought to our table. Steaks are excellent but medium rare cooking is closer to rare. Service was very poor and quite unfriendly. Disappointing experience overall

I must say that the expectations were high, I would have only expected a more casual environment but maybe it was just my expectation. The raw material is very good and the prices in line with the raw material, impeccable service but very much like a starred restaurant

As a native of the NY Metropolitan Area, wife and I, along with our family have visited a few NYC and NJ steak houses. First visit to S&W was in late 90s and wife and I were blown away by the atmosphere, service and food. So impressed that I placed it ahead of Lugers, which I frequently visited with my work friends, who favored the Brooklyn spot. Wife and I had always touted S&W to our daughter who lives in Manhattan and took her there in 2020 to celebrate Post Pandemic return to dining out. We were disappointed by the service and quality, which could be attributed to Post Pandemic reopening. We decided to revisit this past Fri Night 10/14, and though it is still a beautiful restaurant. I was again disappointed by the food. We ordered appetizers, Tuna Tartare which was good and Steak House bacon which was like shoe leather. Extremely salty and could not be cut or chewed, sent it back and it returned the same way. How do you screw up bacon? Daughter ordered Prime Rib, which was sold out and settled for bone in Rib Eye, with Mac and Cheese. Steak was great, but Mac and Cheese was so salty that even she a lover of salt could not eat it. Something is wrong, Keens, Gallaghers, The Palm are the competition and would be more worthy of the several hundred dollars it costs to treat the family to a great NYC Steak House experience.

Wow!!! This is as good as it gets! The super guy in the bar, the service, the quality of wine and food. It doesn’t get any better! If you don’t visit Smith & Wollensky during your stay in NY you miss the best of your stay😘

Tenderloin and ribeye discreet but with excessive marinade flavor that then remains until the next day; fried potatoes left for the presence of sprinkling of seasoning .. based on onion?; high costs , hasty Service (bread with butter and 'arrived at the same time as the meat .. I would have expected it in the meantime); waiter very insistent for tip

The food and drinks were amazing. We ordered the ribeye and it was cooked to perfection. The oysters were very fresh and the drinks were yummy. The servers were very attentive. I'd give it 5 stars but the place is a bit crowded and loud. You have to be really careful when you get up so you don't knock down your neighbor's drinks.

I stepped in for a solo dinner and wanted a steak. The service was spot on the response time for the beer order, seemed like it was only seconds. While it is a small restaurant, it did have plenty of space for nothing small and larger groups. I ended up ordering a filet with baked potato. It was cooked perfectly to my stated preference, and the potato was huge. While the filet was good, I can't say it was great. Next time, I'll try the ribeye.

Hmmmmm, yes it was nice, yes the atmosphere was good, great buzz in the restaurant, staff excellent, server good but this was just a steak - OK good quality steak (but it should be, why should that be a plus, it should be a necessity). My husband had sirloin which undoubtedly was tasty. His creamed spinach was actually too watery. I had filet mignon which although I like my steaks rare, it was way too pink in the middle. I also ordered gratin potatoes - yuck, I'm sorry but they were bad - they were grated like hash browns, topped with horrid yellow processed cheese, some bacon and onions. Not what I expected at all. I had a cheesecake for dessert which was nice and my husband had carrot cake (huge and OK nice) but it was all a bit underwhelming - I was expecting to be blown away but I just came away feeling I had paid a fortune for "just a steak"!

I went to S and W years ago for the veal chop, and we're back now. Very good quality, as expected, traditional, classic and again I got the expected quality. I hope to return many times

Amazing steak house, our steaks just melted in your mouth and all our party (4) were pleased with their choice. Portions are large but incredibly tasty and cooked fresh. The place is busy and popular, you need to book but you will not be disappointed. Great place with excellent staff. We went for special birthdays of two in our group and they each received a dessert and birthday candle.

I have eaten here on every visit to NYC for years, and it never disappoints. Steaks are the best, and service is professional and friendly. The waiter was extremely nice to my 10 month old daughter. We loved it!

I asked for $95 with wine for a Reservation after 8 p.m. It was $350 for two, plus spinach cream (which was excellent here), porterhouse supplements and tips.

There is a wide variety of appetizers, and they are all delicious. I also had the best burrata here during this trip. The Peace Porter steak was also nicely dry-aged, well-cut, and had no unpleasant moldy smell. It was delicious! For sides, I recommend the creamed peanuts and baked potato. For dessert, I had a simple berry one, but it was also delicious.

Chic, refined service, perfect cuisine, however long service, very noisy atmosphere and especially exorbitant prices. For example: sole meal (excluding side dishes) $65 + $16 vegetables + 18% minimum serving = $95.58 for a single dish (excluding wines, dessert and coffee).

Some business partners took us here for dinner and in one word it was amazing. Very impressed with the waiting staff. The gentleman have combined experience of centuries on the job. Steaks were amazing, and so were the sides. The seafood tower appetizer was to die for. Don’t forget super rare bourbon as after dinner. Some of us got dessert, I didn’t. Steak was to good to have anything else, but bourbon. Highly recommend.

Ronnie made our anniversary celebration extra special. Love this restaurant, but his extra touches really made the evening.

I came here for an early dinner on a business trip with coworkers. What a fantastic choice. Everything was done with excellence. This was my first time trying the special, aged Fillet Mignon on the bone. I did not know Fillet Mignon came on a bone until tonight. The steak was cooked to perfection. We asked for two Caesar Salads to split between the four of us. It came on four separate plates, they already divided them up, and the serving size was perfect. The sides of asparagus and creamed spinach were also excellent. One of my coworkers asked for her leftovers to go, and somehow they made a mistake and could not find the leftovers. We said that was not a problem, but they insisted on cooking her a whole new steak that she was able to take home. Also, I had the raspberry sorbet for dessert, it was so good! This restaurant is very expensive, but the price is in line with other top tier steak houses. Excellent choice, if I still lived in NYC this would be my go to place for NY steak houses. I will be back.

Very classy restaurant that harkens back to a bygone era. The cocktails are perfect, their signature prime rib with homemade horseradish sauce was perfect as was the service. Great dining experience.

Lousy table, the waiter never came to attend us, my husband had to go for it to take the order. The dishes didn't pick them up. Lousy service. And the captain never showed up

We chose the restaurant for its rightly earned popularity. The location is warm and welcoming (plus points also because they do not shoot the air conditioning a thousand making customers freeze). The tables are set with elegant white tablecloths and style napkins. The staff is not only prepared and friendly but also very nice. There were two of us and we ordered a filet mignon, a Caesar salad, asparagus and two glasses of wine. The meat was sublime and the salad plentiful and tasty. The big bill but in line with New York prices and an Upper East Side restaurant. If you come to NY you can not miss this gem! PS. you also meet famous people from sports or entertainment

Very bad dishes and extremely expensive. Salmon fish was unfresh at all. Sirion steak which is supposed to be medium-well came totally burned

Read a review on this steakhouse and oh boy it did not disappoint..fantastic steak and great service the peppercorn sauce and crab cakes were mouthwatering!

My wife & I decided on Smith & Wollensky after much research ahead of time, and while the food was great…. I have had more friendly and cordial conversations while ordering at McDonalds to be honest! Upon entering the restaurant all excited about a fantastic experience…. that was quickly turned sour once we arrived and briefly waited on the 2nd floor for our table and for some reason people just coming up the stairs were seated before us like we were invisible. We got the attention of the very unhappy lady seating people and she finally seated us in a dark corner where we needed to use the flashlight on our phone to see our menu. Our table service was slow and unfriendly except from the waiters helpers who were great. I had expected high end service for a restaurant of this reputation but were feeling unwanted and not important after spending $400.00 for a meal which was to be the highlight of our NYC visit. DO NOT GO HERE WITH A SMALL GROUP OF 2, as apparently they only see value in large groups.

We stayed at this restaurant on the back of the fame gained thanks to the film The Devil Wears Prada and I must say that it did not disappoint our expectations. The location is cozy, elegant and very New York. The meat is exquisite and the Service excellent. Fun atmosphere and restaurant so trendy that you can meet famous people

This was the best dinner experience we had while visiting NYC! The service was top notch. Thank you Sam and Brad for making our anniversary a special one. The duo team out did themselves with their service, personality and special touches. We enjoyed the Weekend Wine Dinner which is is offered Thursday-Saturday after 8pm. Absolutely a fabulous deal. $95pp includes an appetizer, entree and dessert and as much wine as you want to drink. Yes, you read that correctly. The food was delicious and the entire experience exceeded out expectations. We will be back for sure!

This was an outstanding experience for the Christmas eve. The place is beautiful and sofisticated. The menu is rich in the best meats that can be accompanied by potatoes, vegetables and others. The service was perfect and the the waiter was very friendly and attentive. It was the best Christmas eve dinner that a ever had in a restaurant for sure.

Never have I had a worse filet mignon. I don't even think it was a filet - it was about an inch thick and 4 inches around. And laced with fat. We asked for au poivre sauce and a gelatinous mass of brown substance was plopped on the table. A once storied steak house, S&W now caters to the tourist crowd, who they hope is charmed by the surly waiters and its history. When we left, there was a group of gentlemen with the host who asked us if we wanted a cab. We thought they were going to hail a cab for us. Instead, they brought around a car and wanted $55 for a $20 trip. They were hoping we didn't know better. There are plenty of steakhouses in NYC. Go to them instead of this faker.

Place without praise and without infamy. Rude staff, normal food and unjustified high prices. Unjustified since there are arrogant and rude staff, very normal food is served. There is a small premise to make: we spent 8 days in New York and we always preferred non-touristy places (we have relatives who live in NYC) and we were treated very well. In this place we were treated with disdain and rudeness. We booked a table for two outside since they always have air conditioning at risk of a heart attack but they gave us a micro-mignon table in a dark and sad corner of the place, perhaps because I was wearing jeans and a sweatshirt?! I don't know! We pointed out the rudeness and they replied that it was the only corner where there wasn't much air conditioning. We insisted and they moved us but the air conditioning was still on high. There was a bit of tension with the waiter (who spoke Italian), then he remembered the tip! We ordered a filet and a ribeye, roast potato, mushrooms and tomatoes and onions, a bottle of wine and a portion of carrot cake for a total of about $320. With the request for a tip (20-25-30% suggestion) in this place it is written at the end of the menu that the tip is not obligatory if there are less than 6 diners. You can only pay with a physical card and not Apple Pay and the waiter doesn't leave his eyes until you give a tip, in fact he even lights his torch!!!! I wouldn't go back even if they offered me dinner, on principle!!! I advise against it! The meat we ate had nothing exceptional, we have eaten better in other places and we were welcomed with such friendliness and professionalism. My motto is I pay to be well served. And not discriminated against! Another point of demerit is the bread, in addition to the fact that they didn't bring us a type in the basket like everyone else, the one served was not fresh bread!!!

The reservation was for Saturday night at 8:30 PM and they finally seated us at 9:15 PM. If that had not been the case, I would have given this restaurant a 5 star. I hate having to wait more than about 10 minutes. The service was excellent, the food was perfect. A very noisy busy place.

Terrible experience. They absolutely insisted that I have my steak cooked rare. They would not cook it other than rare. I had to leave. Their ‘chef’ was obviously cooking to suit himself. I will never go back. 😞

(Last visited 12/30/2022.) Hanging out in New York City to celebrate bringing in the new year and it's dinner time on the night before New Year's Eve! While searching through the bookmarks on my Yelp app I came across Smith & Wollensky. I had it bookmarked for a reason, right? So I checked out the menu and came across this thing called "Weekend Wine Dinner". I like wine. My wife likes wine, so I checked it out. I'll discuss it more below... Atmosphere/Appearance: Located in Midtown 3rd Avenue and 49th Street is this gem. It's been here since 1977 and is a staple in the city. The inside is pretty straightforward. It's a steakhouse with dim, intimate lighting, staff wearing cream blazers and ties with lots of bright woods decorating the interior. It was a bit loud in here, but it's New York City on a weekend, get over it. Lol. I loved the atmosphere in here and it just felt so lively, full of energy. Service: Things moved a bit slow, but we were told someone was out sick so we just chilled out. Besides that, everything went smoothly. Food: Alright, the "Weekend Wine Dinner" is some S & W offers Thursday through Saturday after 8:00pm. For $95.00 per person, you are able to get an appetizer, entree, dessert and "copious" amounts of wine. (Practically unlimited.) We didn't get cut off, but boy we had SO MANY GLASSES. You can rotate between 4 choices which were "Pasqua Prosecco" from Veneto, Italy. Smith & Wollensky's own Sauvignon Blanc from Sonoma, CA. Moulin de Gassaacv 'Guihelm' Rosé from Languedoc, France and The Seeker Cabernet Sauvignon from Mendoza, Argentina. For our appetizers we checked out the shrimp cocktail and the Maryland style crab cake, but there were 10 to choose from if those aren't your fancy. The shrimp were huge and cooked excellently. I wish the cocktail sauce had more horseradish in it, but eh. The crab cake was HUGE, fluffy, fresh, flavorful and delicious. I was very impressed. For our entrees we of course chose the classic filet mignon, but you can get it topped in various ways for no extra charge! It was cooked PERFECTLY, was tender, juicy, thick and just really blew me away for the value. We chose broccoli and asparagus as our sides to try being healthier. Nothing to report there. For dessert we had sorbet or something, again, to try being healthy. Lol. I loved this whole idea. Value: I mean, C'MON! $95.00 per person for the app, that huge filet with sides, the dessert and the copious amounts of wine is just INCREDIBLE! I want to get back here soon to freaking do this again! In conclusion, I loved this place and I feel like a Weekend Wine Dinner is the only way I'll be able to eat here. Lol. I've been spoiled by it and hope to get back here soon!

The restaurant feels "historic" and there are lots of staff who keep an eye on the guest, if wine/water needs to be refilled. You get a large basket with envelope bread in different varieties. The portions are extremely large, I had the clam chowder for starter and the companion bacon and the portions were like a whole main course. Totally ok in taste but nothing wow. The meat for the main course was super tender and very well cooked, filet mignon and sirlion. The steamed broccoli was a little too hard for my taste. Here, too, the portions were very large, we couldn't finish. Good for meat lovers but not really value for money.

Came to this spot on an unplanned dinner. Made reservations at the restaurant and ended up at the 'grill' which is the bar section of the restaurant. Albeit very very crowded... the service was great as well as the food. Victor & Matt were our waiters who obviously have the best Manager in the world @ Jeff ( no this isn't a paid advertisement lol). Our food suggestions: *Crab cakes *Margharitas *Lamb chops *Lemon chicken *Fresh Spinach ( I asked for it to be cooked with garlic but maybe they cook it like that Anyway) tasty! *Clam chowder ( delicious but it has bacon) We felt very welcome as first timers. Our waiters were as awesome as the food. By the way.... don't be fooled by the appetizer portions (they're modest) ... Dinner portions and sides are huge! Thank you for an enjoyable dinner. Will be back!

A guarantee for meat dishes. The place is always crowded and the tables are a little small. High prices even for NY I don't know if I would go back..,,

Our second time eating here, this time with family and we ate at the grill part of the restaurant. The food is amazing and the atmosphere is exactly what you want in NYC, busy and fun! The whole family loved it. Make sure you try the hash!

Very touristy place, the portions are very plentiful, so I recommend sharing in 2 each dish, the meat is definitely very good, but the prices are very expensive. I didn't like that they force you to leave your coats in the wardrobe and the pickup lady rudely asks for a tip before even returning it.

This restaurant was recommended to us by friends. I have to say that it disappointed our expectations. Chaotic, background noise and people talking almost shouting, unbearable. As for the food, everything was very expensive but not up to par. Wine list unwatchable for the prices. Average quality, everything very spicy. Abundant quantities. Fairly attentive customer service.

I hadn't heard of this restaurant and just chanced upon it. Reviews seem to suggest it is revered as a steakhouse. Good welcome and shown to our table. We were placed next to a large party of people who were so noisy and seemed oblivious to the glances of fellow diners (and some of their own companions, who at least tried to shush each other when language deteriorated). Not the fault of the restaurant but a shame for everyone around them. Food order was finally taken after half an hour and arrived an hour after that. Seriously not good. The food itself? Steaks were lovely quality meat. Sides were enough for two (or ask for half portions) which could have been explained. Goodness knows who made the Caesar Salads - how does a place charge so much for watery dressed lettuce and a few croutons? Generally you want to eat out to have something better than you'd make at home. Streaks yes, everything else no. Servers were plentiful and seemed nice, but as other reviewers have commented, need to make sure that all diners are served well. Seemed a bit uncoordinated - hence crazy waiting times for food, watching people who's around after us get the food before us etc. . We'd almost finished our (expensive) wine before the food came. We made the most of our evening and left.

Food was great, but Sam and Brad took care of us to make sure it was a good night! I will 100% be back to celebrate my next occasion!

I have been eating here on / off for twenty years. Always, when in the city I go to S&W. It never disappoints. I had crab cocktail to start. An amazing sirloin steak which was perfect. Baked potato. Great service. It is a little tired so maybe a few dollar's spent of some paint would be a good idea. But - when I go to NYC, first mission for me is lunch at S&W. Its so cool.

Our server to start with was lovely But we had an issue with our final bill waiting in excess of 15 mins plus to sort it out, when asked our server what's going on,she came at me with attitude and making out it was my fault.when one's spending in excess of £400 it's not what one expects from an employee. Also after replying to the website about feedback I'm still waiting for a response from the management some 5 days later Shoddy service shoddy attitude from service staff and to top it all they apply a service charge to be treated as one is in the wrong by the staff

I brought coworkers /friends here in March for the Wine dinner ( which is an amazing deal, the best in the city) and they loved it so much that we increased the group on this visit and we had an amazing time. The service was exceptional, we met our servers the famous "B team" of Brad and Mr. B, both of them were incredibly attentive and we were treated like royalty. Everyone at the table had a wonderful dinner from the steak to the seafood all of us were extremely happy. Mr.B made sure we had plenty of water and kept bringing over the wine to make sure were never without. I've been coming to this location since the Eighties and I can say that the experience is always wonderful and that is because the people that work here do an exceptional job in making sure the guests are taken care of. I would recommend asking to be seated where the B team can look after you and your party. We as a group, are already planning are next visit.

My wife and I booked this restaurant for our wedding anniversary and we absolutely loved it. Great service from entering the restaurant until leaving. We both ordered Filet mignon, with multiple sides to try as we had never been to a S&W before ( broccoli, asparagus, hash browns, onions rings and Mac&cheese). Steak was cooked perfectly and all the sides were delicious with a shout out to the hash browns. Coconut cake for desert was 10/10. With it being our Anniversary, S&M poured us complimentary champagne. This experience was 5 star. We travelling to NYC from Ireland and S&M should open up a restaurant up here.

We’ve been to several S&Ws, and this did not live up to the brand. We had the porterhouse, it was good, but they can better. The service was not what we have experienced at other S&Ws. Maybe just an unlucky night.

We tried the wine weekend menu and really enjoyed it, three delicious courses and plenty of wine 😀 The burrata was great as was the sirloin steak so very happy Service was very good

I absolutely loved our evening at Smith & Wollensky. With so many reputable steakhouses in New York, it's difficult to know if you're selecting the right one but I can confirm that the porterhouse that we shared was one of the best pieces of beef that we have ever had the pleasure of enjoying. The front of house team were busy but also charming and we enjoyed talking with them, albeit briefly on each occasion. I should also add that the 14 page wine list is extensive to say the least, it was quite a challenge to make a selection given the breadth of options available. In the end we opted for a 2019 Château des Eyrins Margaux that was absolutely perfect.

We had looked so forward to visiting the esteemed restaurant and were so disappointed. Service was horrible. In and out seemed to be the goal of the evening. Questions were answered as if the person asked was put upon. Food was adequate but nothing to write home about. So many wonderful restaurants in New York City, I wished we hadn't wasted this evening

I was working hard here after corona, but now I'm not. I asked for a $95 course of wine and steak. The wine is full from 3 types, but there is no glass change. Wines range from around $10 to $20. I made Porterhouse with supplements, but there is no original scent of unsavory aged beef! It was delicious in 2024 and I was shocked even though I went there 3 times for 2 weeks❗️

Amazing wine list with lots of US and EU options, but limited cheaper options. Steak is great (also with the spinach) and the carrot cake is famous.... And massive!

Very good restaurant in the heart of Manhattan. It is not the typical tourist restaurant, it is where New Yorkers go to eat well. The meat is unbeatable and the pie cart makes you want to be like Robin Hood and catch the whole thing. Very good.

We were here the second time. The food was delicious again. Unfortunately, it was very loud this time. You could hardly talk. The Service was also not as good as last year and culminated in us already being presented with the bill while we were still eating dessert. The wine was not offered at the beginning either. Seemed a bit like mass handling. Too bad!

A great restaurant and steakhouse. Exceptional selection of perfectly prepared steaks. Very experienced and professional staff. They do not miss a thing. Gluten free options available with steaks, Grey seafood appetizers and sides. A little limited on gluten free desserts yet still enjoyed some ice cream.

Disappointing experience. My appetizer, tuna, tartare, was the worst that i ever had. It was very watery and tasteless. I felt that it was an order that was returned to the kitchen before being presented to our table. My sirloin steak had a rubbery texture with too much gristle. However, my wifes Filet Mignon was very good. Overall, i have much better dining experience in the other well known steakhouses in NYC

This place is suitable for an elegant dinner or a refined aperitif. We ate very well. Prices appropriate to the quality of the place, the central area and the kindness of the waiters.

Went to dinner here with my wife and another couple . Disappointing service — initially ignored then eventually got our drinks . Food was good and steaks were well prepared . About 30 minutes after we ordered the waiter returned to say they were out of mashed potatoes . This was below their normally solid level of customer service .

The famous Smith & Wollensky Steakhouse on 49./3. is really worth a visit. Their steaks are top notch. One of the best meat restaurants in NYC.

Great steaks, excellent service iconic NY destination The place was packed to the rafters so if you want a quiet evening this is not the place on a Saturdsy night. The steaks were big so we shared a 16oz sirloin between us which was plenty after our stsrter. The medium rare steak was cooked to perfection and was one of the best I’ve ever had. In total with the mandatory tip the bill was around $250 for two but eyewatering prices are the rule in Manhatten.

Pre-pandemic, I dined at NYC steak houses twice a year. I’ve been to many of the big names as is evidenced by some of my prior reviews. Upon returning to traveling late last year, I found consistent disappointment at each “big” restaurant I would visit. The legacy wait staffs of yore had all been replaced by essentially children. I consider anyone 25 and under to be a child when they are serving my table. No, I’m not a Boomer, just a veteran diner who appreciates experience. Imagine my surprise and delight when our waiter appeared to be from The Time Before! THIS is how I remember my steak house experiences! I want an older gentleman to come to my table. I want him to know the menu like the back of his hand, as well as discuss choices. The food did not disappointment. I had the crab appetizer to start and then the prime rib. My side was their version of potatoes au gratin. For dessert I had the bourbon sundae (I think that was it). EVERYTHING was delicious!! I felt like the past three years had never happened and I was back in the New York I remembered. I will definitely be sharing with my friends about this restaurant. That if they want to be served by those who still know their way around a menu that serves cow, this is the place to dine.

Their clam chowder was 95% potatoes and had maybe 3 clams in it. I ordered a prime rib for $80 that was small and the worst piece of meat I’ve ever eaten in my life. It’s a ripoff and tourist trap!

Excellent restaurant with amazing service. The service was amazing and everything was delicious! We were delighted

Went to this classic, New York steak house and it did not dissapoint. The moment you walk in, you get a great old school vibe. The food was incredible and the servers were amazing. Many have been there for 20+ years. Great expereince from start to finish.

This was the best steak I have ever eaten! Go with the intention of having the best meal. The waiter was so lovely and had all the information we needed to have a great meal! If you want a great date dinner 100% recommend.

I love this Restaurant and I have been a regular since about 30 years. Last two times I dined there, the service and etc. was perfect but the quality of meat (Rib Eye Steaks) was substandard. They are charging premium and no-one is questioning them about the prices but we do expect the best quality of meet. If they do not go back to their original standards, they will lose me and certainly many other good customers to their competitors. Second problem there is the way the tables are placed. Literally every minute, the waiters had to push the people back and fort to open a passage for the trolleys piled with used plates. T?his is ridiculous.

Very old school. Crab cake perfectly seared and great presentation. Crowded with all Kinds of diners. More of a tourist attraction.

Been to NYC many times and never been to S&W before... Was very close to our hotel, and just an electric atmosphere You must book, and unlike many NY restaurants, we did not have to wait too long for our table despite the restaurant being packed to the gunnels. Like all NY establishments - rather on the high price end of things The staff however are very entertaining and engaging! Steaks were off the scale amazing!

Had a lovely dinner during our stay in New York, thank you for the great service! Of course it’s a a pricey meal out- but worth it for a treat

Was really looking forward to this as a recommendation from a friend. What a disappointment as a steak fan it was distinctly average. Service was average obviously very little training. Who serves a whole butterfly chicken to a lady. Not a butterfly breast but a whole chicken!!! Poor night

I got to dine here for lunch today. It was really delicious and be young in the kitchen doing a great job! They ate their own meat and you can taste it! The service is super accommodating! I recommend ordering the sirloin and the corn and also ordering your own house wine cabernet!! And finally an N.Y. Cheescake! Soooo delicious !!!!

Booked in advance in England prior to our trip to New York about a month in advance. Booking taken. Specific time given. Reminder sent. Got there on time. Utter carnage. Pushing, shoving, people waiting everywhere, hot tempers, tears and tantrums. Gave it 40 minutes stood in the entrance, no chance of getting to the bar. Walked out in disgust as it was obvious we were not going to get our table. My advice. Don’t go. Over booked and probably over rated. They need to remember customers, smith and Wollensky obviously don’t care

Still fabulous, 13 years after our last visit It is not cheap but is totally worth every penny The portions are typically American and huge! Meat quality is fabulous Great for gluten free options

Look, I know this is no longer the coolest or the best steak house in the world. It might never have been. But, I will still always visit it whenever I’m in NY. It’s iconic. And it will never disappoint. Definitely also recommend you focus on the lesser known wines on the list, the sommelier has some great stuff at good prices there. Cajun rib eye or the fillet all the way

For some reason they said they couldn’t run my card cause it wasn’t chipped. I’m like wtf would I have done if we didn’t have any other cards? Food and service was great

Great food, drinks and desserts. Bit expensive but it is worth it. The service was perfect. I'll come back, hopefully soon.

Smith & Wollensky was recommended by a friend who travels frequently to NY on business. We ate here as a treat during our visit in NY. It's an old-school steak-house - old-school decor, old-school waiters....but all in a good way. If you do not really appreciate a good steak....this is not a place for you. However, if you do appreciate a good steak....and you can afford it, then definitely give it a try. Very, very good steak. Perfectly cooked and delicious sides. Its as simple as that, what else do you need from a steak restaurant?!

We were recently in NYC after a month in Europe.....It was time for a steak!! I first ate here in the early 90's , and not much has changed (other than the prices). Don't get me wrong, it is worth what you pay, for your meal, (the wine list is unnecessarily expensive), the service is old-fashioned and outstanding. We were looked after by Keith, a gentleman who migrated from Singapore to NYC 40 years ago, his menu/product knowledge was impressive. Be sure to book and make this a part of your visit to NYC.

Having previously dined at S&W for New Year's Eve 2021/22 and had a fantastic experience, we decided to do the same thing this year 2023/24 on our recent trip to NYC. Although we had an overall good evening, it sadly did not quite live up to our expectations. Upon arrival our table was not ready and we had to wait in the bar which was (expectedly for NYE) very crowded. Once shown to our table, our server was great and very informative on the menu. We had a 9pm seating and aimed to stagger our courses so that we could celebrate midnight at the restaurant. As a party of 4, for starters 1 had the calamari which was OK, another had the shrimp cocktail which was good, and then 2 of us shared the Smith's Bouquet (cold seafood). The Bouquet was fantastic with generous, juicy prawns, crab and lobster and delicious homemade tomato sauce and horseradish. For mains, 1 had the lamb chops which were OK and 3 of us had Bone-In Rib Steaks which were all undercooked and had to be sent back. These were then returned to use but hadn't been rested so our steaks were swimming in blood, oil and fat which didn't make the eating experience pleasant. The mains in general were also over-seasoned and especially salty. The sides of creamed spinach and steamed asparagus were delicious. At midnight the staff shared round some celebratory hats and a glass of prosecco which was a lovely gesture and a great way to start the new year. Overall, we had a memorable evening although the mains didn't quite live up to our expectations being undercooked, served in juices, and overly salty.

Based on the reviews was really looking forward to this place. The reality left us underwhelmed and disappointed as I had chosen this place to celebrate my husbands 50th birthday. I wish I had chosen somewhere that acknowledged his birthday, with a friendlier less snobby atmosphere. I was expecting to pay highly for the food, but when the food is average it’s disappointing. Husband enjoyed lamb chops but pork chop was dry and over cooked. Hard to explain but this place made us feel very uncomfortable.

Based on the reviews I had high expectations for my dinner at Smith& Wollensky New York steak house. Food wise the restaurant had some pluses: the filet mignon was cooked properly to the doneness requested and the crab cake was moist and delicious. And it had some minuses: my colleagues Dover Sole was burnt on one end and the steamed broccoli had a strange, waxy texture. Add these two together and you get a five out of ten possible points—nothing special. The real negative was the service. The people serving our table kept changing and we had to keep asking for basics like water to be refilled, cutlery to be replaced after a course change. Also they stuck us near the service station so we had waiters constantly bumping our table, shouting to their colleagues. The worse was the servers attitude, surly and rude. Basically they seemed tired and couldn’t be bothered to provide descent service let alone manage a smile. The finale was being accused of stealing one of the servers pens, when they only gave us one to sign separate checks (for business expense purposes). Would I go back? No Recommendations: there are lots of great steak restaurants in NYC, with service to match. Go to any one of them and avoid this place

Certainly recommend this place...good menu and drinks selection...good service from wait staff..suggest to book in advance as it can get busy at peak times 😀

Terrible. Inedible starter fish, the meat tasteless and rubbery, low quality. Cooking not as requested. The side dishes are absolutely not of good quality. Even the desserts were not good in taste or quality. The bill was already shocking but for what we ate it was unacceptable. Not to be repeated.

Prime rib steak was supposed to be the steak. It was not! It was bloody and chewy (even though I ordered it medium), and it wasn’ t spiced at all. Mashes potatoes were runny. There’s definitely favoritism there, as people at the table next to us were treated differently and got more attention. Altogether, quite a disappointment! And they’re supposed to be the best! Beware!

Sunday mass comes once a week, but the religious experience of dining at Smith and Wollensky’s can be achieved any day of the week. This place is where trash meets class: The Applebees of the Big Apple. I find myself craving to come back before I walk out. Plotting when is an acceptable period before I can enter the gates of food heaven again. I keep making up excuses to come back almost weekly. This week I held my cat's funeral reception dinner at S&W and the week before I celebrated my coworker's nefews having his bar mitzva after overhearing her talk about it by the water cooler. You either have class or you don't. S&W is the epitome of class. This is obvious when they shuttle you to their high-class bar for a complimentary drink if your table isn’t ready at the time of your reservation. This fine establishment is Technically a chain restaurant with ten locations worldwide but you would be making an ass of yourself if you qualified it one. If you want to do it right make sure you go to the weekend wine dinner that is offered after 8 pm Thursday- Saturday. The dinner comes with endless wine that the waiters push on you like they have a stake in the sales of the particular wine. Every rehab facility within the Tristate area should write a handwritten thank you note to S&W thanking them for keeping them in business. The endless wine has a flow rate higher than the Mississippi and the food leaves you stuffed like the Thanksgiving turkey. I recommend not planning a night on the town after this reservation because you will be so full of great food and wine that you will want to retreat to your sleeping corners as fast as possible. While it's technically not all you can eat I would love to see how man vs food would hold up to the wine dinner. The portion size makes other steakhouses look stingy. *if you have European friends coming to town to visit, Please take them here first and act like it's a typical American restaurant* After I feast on a huge plate of thick-cut bacon I can barely look at my steak. It’s only when I take a bite of the perfectly aged, seasoned, and masterfully cooked meat that I can muster up eating more. The meat gods would most certainly turn you vegan if you let a filet go to waste within the confines of the S&W walls. By the time the desert hits and the meat sweats are in full swing I usually just admire its appearance rather than try and eat the whole cake that they claim is just a slice. All the food is great but you would be missing out if you left with trying the signature think cut bacon. If my mention above wasn’t enough to convince you to get it I hope this second shoutout does. I have stopped eating other bacon because of the letdown and the depression that follows. It’s hard to drive a Prius after taking a Ferrari for a spin. The drinks are nothing to joke about. The martini is always the obvious choice in NYC, especially at S&W. You will not find a bigger martini anywhere in the world unless you are at one of the other 9 locations. The size of the glass is big enough to keep Shamu the orca happy, If you take away everything else the people make S&W worth it. The staff is so warm they make feel like you have been invited over to their house for a meal; no shocker they all have tenures old enough to vote. Smith and Wollensky’s is more than just a restaurant to me. My origin starts at the S&W in Miami twenty-two years and nine months ago at my parent's anniversary dinner (true story). Eating the same food and drinking the same wine that fueled my conception is an honor, especially at the original S&W In NYC. Smith and Wollenskies I will devote my life to promoting you if you start comping my meals. I rate Smith and Wollensky’s a perfect 9.9 and would give it three Michelin stars if I could.

The steak is delicious The service was great and the people was really kind and friendly. The price is good

We went to Smith & Wollensky for my husband’s birthday because he wanted Prime Rib. He thought it very good. However, I ordered Tuna Tartare for dinner. When tasted it I found it had a funny, tomato pasty taste. I asked the server if there was tomato in the preparation and he said no, it was just tuna. I looked an was sure I found a piece of tomato so I asked him to check with the chef. He came back and sheepishly reported there was, indeed, tomato in the dish. I was appalled that a restaurant such as this would use a cheap filler in the preparation of the dish. He brought me another serving “without tomato” however, I had a bad “taste”in my mouth and couldn’t enjoy it. The restaurant is pricey and there is no excuse for this kind of behavior.
True dining experience
I was recommended to try this restaurant and as a steak lover I thought I'd give it as go despite the fact that its family pricey. I read somewhere that "If steak was a religion, this would be it's cathedral" and I nor know what this means. Not only was he food the best I've ever eaten, the experience of the visit was unlike anything I've ever experienced (see photos) I had Clams casino as a starter and my wife had Crab cakes and we followed this with Lemon Sole and the bone-in rib steak. I am embarrassed to say that couldn't even finish it and they were kind enough to pack up our dessert to take home. At all times out glasses were never allowed to drop below half on the wine and dinner weekend deal. On top of all that, it felty like dining in a restaurant from the Sopranos or something similar with large families of locals enjoying the place which has to be a good sign, Capiche? My advice is book well in advance and get there on time as these tables are in demand.
