Best Greek food outside Greece

By Kauaiguest |

This is the best Greek restaurant I have been to outside Greece, and I have been to many in several different countries. This is because the food was so fresh and tasty, especially the salads, which were delicious, and the skordalia. Staff also were very friendly and attentive.

Stepping into a Matisse Painting

By carolina_nat |

Coming through the door is like stepping off a sailboat into a seaside Geek island cafe. Great service. Incredible good. The melizanosalata, taramosalata, hummus, avgolemono, and horiatiki were sinfully good. The hostess could have been from the pantheon of Greek goddesses, which didn't hurt the ambience at all :-)

Real Greek food, nice setting CHEAP

By Rick L |

Sometimes when you eat at a food truck, you wish they had a real restaurant to visit so you could sit down. Well the Souvlaki people did just that. They turned a very successful food truck business into a small cafe. With settings that look like the ancient caves of Santorini. You get lots of food for little money. All well made, perfectly seasoned, and plenty to share and bring home. Dining with veteran Souvlaki goers, we heard tales of bad service, but apparently, new staff was added because there were new faces and definitely new attitudes. Service was fine. For three of us, we ate everything we wanted in a tapas-style sit down, had more than we could finish -- all for under $100 (that includes some alcohol as well). This was too cheap for this food. It will be our every time we visit NYC location.

Friendly local eats

By DavidR2000 |

Great food, fresh and fast. Starter house Greek salad was very fresh. Moussaka was recommended by our waitress and did not disappoint. Fresh and tasty. Grilled vegetables were an excellent addition to the lamb chops. But the 1 kilo plate of lamb was a bit dry.

Food Truck Location

By Dionna S |

Had the special of the day, a Greek burger and husband had the Greek sausage. Both were so good, we will probably go back before our trip is over. Its worth another trip. Great job, was extremely tasty Greek food. Also, very friendly and customer service oriented guys running the truck.

Not bad, but expectations were too high maybe

By ozrules |

During our last stay in NYC in August 2015 we passed in front of this restaurant daily (it was located close to our hotel) and we wanted to go there but it was always fully booked. So we booked a bit in advance this time in order to be sure there would be a place... We were tired of our trip to the U.S. and the restaurant was extremely noisy and we really needed to shout to the waiter so he could understand us. There were 2 big groups next to our table at both sides causing a lot of noise and "traffic". Because of all of this we could not really relax while we were there... I am sure that if we would have been more awake and in the mood and if we would have gone alone without my parents the experience would have been different. It's not really honest to judge this restaurant only following these criteria of course so to get down to the most important: the food itself was really good! We all had different appetizers and mains and each and every one of them were very good. The decor is also very nice and very well done! I would like to go back here next time we are in New York to give it another go, but in order to experience everything fully we won't make the mistake again of going on the night of our arrival after traveling...

Nice small Greek restaurant

By AriKir |

Small but transport you to Greece, you actually feel you are eating at mykonos or santorini. The service is good and the food excellent. Reccomend the tzatziki And souvlaki with meat. Not expensive and great location too. Although a bit small the place is very nice

The Best Greek Restaurant in NYC!

By WanderlustBeautyDreams |

I first came across it back in 2015 when I had a few friends that I met during my European travels were visiting in town. Everyone loved this restaurant not only because of the decor but for how authentic the food was. I have been coming back countless times with so many friends and family. So if you're into Greek food, this is the place to check out. I highly recommend trying out their greek salads, souvlaki gyros, moussaka, and greek fries. Also their wine selection is great as well!

Great decor; terrible food!

By ZAK0214 |

The beauty of Greece is captivated in the blue and white Cycladic decor. They have a great decorator, now all they need is a Greek cook! The food was absolutely terrible! Not even close to original Greek cuisine to say the least. They are totally over-priced---the souvlaki portions looked like kiddie meals as did the souvlaki pitas. The Greek salad was soggy and did not resemble a salad; the tomatoes tasted old as did the cucumber; there was no oil, oregano or olives and onions on it. Who ever heard of a Greek salad without olive oil, oregano and olives? I was expecting a succulent, tasty souvlaki but instead got something dry and unpleasantly smelling. It didn't even taste like meat! The prices are outrageous for the portions they offer. $2.75 for a souvlaki that has two bits of un-eatable meat is a bit steep! It's too bad that the food is not as inviting as the atmosphere. They need an overhaul in the kitchen.....get someone that at least knows how to assemble a Greek salad---it's not rocket science.

Super disappointing - do not bother if you like Greek food

By rockandroller1 |

I wanted to love this but honestly, there wasn't much to love. Service was impersonal and disinterested, the auto-grat was not appreciated (18% for a party of 3 people) and the food was abysmal. My Grandmother is from Thessaloniki and I have been making Greek food all my life and this...was not good. The spanakopita was deep fried and I don't know what the dough was but it wasn't phyllo. Dry and tasteless. The roast chicken tasted like the sauce was from a jar. Really not good. The "bifteki gemisto" is described as "Greek burges stuffed with Greek cheeses" but it was just regular hamburger topped with a bunch of feta.

great share plate meal in authentic looking Greek taverna

By 123degrees |

Beautifully decorated restaurant with fresh well priced food. Greek staff add to atmosphere and the wine list was a good mix or white, red, organic and even Greek wines. We had a bottle of white,$35,We ate the 3 dip plate and Greek salad to start which in itself was nearly enough. The meat skewers and pita wrap were not too big and the spinach triangles came as 3 small had held snacks, easy to eat not too filling but they didn't come with any extras. As we are getting used to the large meal sizes this was back to what I consider normal serving size and made it a good restaurant for a group to share plates . By 7 pm the place was packed so try to get there round 6.30 . A very pleasant evening with some outsid tables. Cost for 4 with wine $117.

Excellent Greek

By Alex B |

Excellent Greek meals here. I've eaten dinner here twice and both times loved it. Very fresh and flavorful meals. The chicken and potatoes were amazing. Friendly staff. Casual but nicer than basic casual.

A piece of Greece

By ventsurlonde |

This place has a cute traditional Greek taverna decor, and they also have outdoor seating perfect for summer nights. Service was friendly, food are very good and portion are huge. Very good value for what you get.

I feel like I'm in Mykonos!

By giuseppebicceri |

I don't know if I love more the idea of being on vacation in Mykonos or just the food itself but I have to say that this place makes me happy! The setting is too nice, you will feel like you are eating in an outside restaurant in a small street of Mykonos and the vibe and the food will be exactely the same. It's a place with lot of young people so you can find very noisy party tables sometimes but this is part of feeling on vacation right? 😜 if you like symple Greek food and a great vibe this is the place you can't miss in the East Village

Exceptional Greek cuisine and atmosphere

By Andreas S |

Friendly when we came in without reservation. They had a big group but gave us a table. Service was exceptional and when they made a mistake in the order not only they corrected it but also served us lukumades. As for the atmosphere, you are in Mykonos!!!!

TRULY GREEK! TRULY GREAT!

By Tim S |

We love Greek food and this place serves some of the best. You might be sitting very close to those you do not know but worth the close quarters for great food.

Nice Ambience

By Natalia B |

The ambience they have created in this restaurant is really great. It's small and cozy just like most restaurants in the Greek islands. It is a nice escape from the city. The food is great if you are not Greek. I personally found it ok but my American friends loved it. They have a great collection of greek drinks and that's pretty great. All in all I would definitely recommend it!

Delicious food

By Laura F |

Yummy food, very reasonably priced. Had the SGR Loukaniko Pita and it was sooo tasty with its spicy feta, I ended up ordering a second one. The dessert (donuts dipped in honey) was not that special. Skip dessert and go for the savory here.

Great!

By Brian A |

Went to the 56th Street location that recently opened. Very authentic, extraordinarily affordable and great food for the price. This location isn't for the claustrophobic though.

Plenty of Vegetarian Options

By Michael F |

We both ate vegetarian and had no problems. Loud, busy place and it was great! Service was slow, but it was very busy, so I understand.

Disappointing Greek food

By Voldar15 |

Decent rating on opentable but it turned out to be a mediocre dud. Food was not memorable they nickel and dime you on the dip which comes in very small containers and when you ask for more they charge you and extra $2. Wine list was mediocre. Really disappointing.. Not a 2 star more a 2.5

To do in the heart of Manathan

By Karine K |

I highly recommend this restaurant in the heart of NY We ate in the extension on the street but the interior was really inviting too. Very good and plentiful dishes Very friendly staff

Good facsimile

By Schipa |

Well, why not? After all those kitschy recreations of old Europe from Vegas to Disney, here at least is one that is pretty authentic, though without the cigarette smoke. Souvlaki GR is all dolled up like an island cafe/taverna and also has a mock-up periptero displaying Greek goods. Of course, in Greece, you probably wouldn't be eating souvlaki in a joint that looked like this, but no matter. The souvlaki and prices are excellent--much better quality meat than you typically get in Greece. Nice friendly staff (a lot more friendly and attentive than you are likely to find on Mykonos or Naxos). They didn't have their retsina license yet when we went--a definitely must if you want top off the experience. Who knows, if you drink enough you might walk back out on Stanton Street and see the blue Aegean. Absurdly cheap compared to Vegas and Disney.

like you're in greece

By Sydney R |

Souvlaki has awesome greek food and the place looks so authentic as if your'e on the streets in Greece with their blue and white theme. It is the best greek food I've ever had that wasn't in Greece

Amazing! Transports you to Mykonos!!

By Thalassa81812 |

I absolutely love this place! Awesome food and terrific service! Try the lamb chops (yum) and Greek salad. Love the Specialty cocktails and of course, the frappe! Walking into this place makes you feel like you have been transported to Mykonos! Refreshingly white and blue, it has a super cool vibe and the food is at a great price point for NYC living!

Cute and loud

By Manuela B |

Typical Greek style restaurant, nice, but too noisy. The dinner was decent, but the noise was so annoying that we didn't appreciate the evening.

A refreshing step into Greece on the Lower East Side of Manhattan

By Marciahi |

What an absolutely delightful experience! Located on the Lower East Side, you open the door and step onto a Aegean Greek island. The chairs had to be directly from Greece (those straw seated chairs that leave marks on your legs when you collapsed in a local taverna). The decorating makes you feel like you are in Mykonos and the food was well prepared, fresh and delicious. To complete my joyful experience, they actually have frappes. Goodbye Starbucks. Hello Souvlaki. Gr. With so many upscale, overpriced Greek restaurants in Manhattan, it was so refreshing to find this reasonably priced, authentic Greek restaurant. Not fancy, but we always say in Greece, fancy restaurants do not mean good food. Souvlaki.Gr means good food.

Very tasty food.

By jlessuck |

Souvlaki GR is a great place to stop for lunch. The food is very nicely seasoned and the prices are reasonable. My only warning is that the single pita souvalki is enough for a meal, so plan on splitting an appetizer - the eggplant spread was excellent.

A Greek Gem in Midtown. Souvlaki GR 56th str - incredibly food and value

By Kristerhhs90 |

Been here for lunch 5 times already. Fantastic food, from the salad to the sausages to the best Greek burgers in town. Not the mention the Lamb. And very inexpensive and great service. We paid $52 for 4 people.

Spotted on street

By Baba |

Small rest. Of course it’s Greece. Amazing setup with tables and bar that is mixed between white and blue. The atmosphere is so vibrant and the bar tender is simply so cheerful and friendly. The drinks and food is absolutely wonderful and very Tasty. Try the moussaka and the halloumi. Seriously this place is a wonder rest that offers both value for money and an experience worth trying.

A memorable meal in NY

By MsWorldyWise |

The food was part of this; the loukaniko was some of the best I've had and the bread was light and tasty. Our 'main course' (chicken souvlaki) was tasty though more like an 'on-the go' lunch but looking around there were more formal meals served so we made a weird choice perhaps! Sat at the bar (as they were fully booked) which meant we had a very attentive and sweet waiter/manager (?) who was generous with his wine and nightcaps on the house. A refreshing and unexpected touch in a busy NY restaurant which really made the night. On a hot and humid NY evening, this was an all-round great choice.

Authentic Greek Food at Authentic Greek Price

By Withatwist55 |

Small cozy space that transports you to Greece. Go across the street to Milos or Molyvos for overpriced Branzino and pretentious hostesses. Come here for inexpensive delicious casual food.

Great Greek place!

By Jesduarte |

Excellent typical Greek place in the Lower East Side, with great decor (you can imagine yourself in typical Taverna from the Cyclades) and very friendly staff. We came during the week for lunch and it was pretty calm and pleasant. The food is fantastic and we can say with full confidence that it tastes just like in Greece! Memories of holidays, sun and beach came to mind...

Yummy !!!

By BabsM74 |

Wow this place is a real piece of Greece in NYC. The food is absolutely delicious and authentic Greek. The tzaziki is yummy! Service is friendly and seem a bit shy. Lovely place, thumbs up!

Place is the jam!

By Drew D |

Great food. Really hit the spot- feta was super soft and tasty. The house spicy sauce was delicious. A true gem. Will definitely go back.

Greek Neighborhood Feel

By WineSnob7 |

Small neighborhood type feel. We had tapas style and just had a great time, food was very good for a non Greek type. The wine was Greek and actually quite good.

Wonderful food and huge ambience!

By girigamba |

Enjoyed delicious Greek food here. Packed to the hilt on a Thursday evening. Highly encourage reservations. Service was friendly but slow- simply not enough serving staff to have quick service. So loud that it made conversation a challenge—but would come again and recommend it.

Average

By Carolj725 |

We were looking forward to Greek food in a lovely Greek cafe but were disappointed in our overall experience. The pikilia, which we've ordered many times in other Greek restaurants, was very disappointing and we didn't even eat it. None of the three dips tasted that good. The pasticcio; however, was very good. The restaurant was super loud and the service seemed rushed. It's a cute little place but there are too many other Greek restaurants to choose from so we will go somewhere else next time.

Has potential but bad experience with wood skewer in my souvlaki

By Nikol K |

My fiancĂ©e and I arrived at 6:55 for a 7 pm reservation at the LES location and it was completely empty, so we were immediately seated. We ordered a salad and some drinks and chatted. When my fiancĂ©e picked up her water glass to pour herself a glass of water, we noticed there were glass shards in the cup itself, as well as outside of it on the napkin. We figured no big deal, let them know and they replaced the glass. We indulged in our salad (which was delicious) and had a chat. Our main course arrived quickly after and I had ordered the chicken souvlaki wrap. The first few bites were very tasty. However, half way through my meal, I took a bite and while chewing, I felt something sharp/hard in my mouth (almost like a bone) and immediately spit my food out into a napkin. I looked at the napkin and to my utter surprise, there was a notably large piece of wooden skewer stick in the napkin. I had almost swallowed a fairly large piece of this wooden skewer (for sizing reference it was at least the size of a pointer finger). By this time there were 4 other tables in use in the restaurant and the waitress had since not come back to ask how our food was or offer more drinks (our glasses had been empty for a while). I picked out another piece of chicken and looked inside and found another small piece of the wooden skewer in there as well. At this point I set it aside and decided I was done eating. My fiancĂ©e had finished her meal, which was the lemon chicken option on the daily specials menu and really enjoyed it. The man who was cleaning up the tables came by to collect her plate and I mentioned this all to him without making a huge fuss about it. He immediately responded with “the chicken is made on a skewer so upon putting it into the pita, it probably got partially left behind.” While I totally understand that this can happen, that does not make it OK, considering this could’ve been consumed by a child or someone elderly that may not have caught it and could’ve easily choked on this or furthermore, had it cause damage. He said he would let the kitchen know. At this time the waitress finally came by and I let her know as well, and she was apologetic and said she would tell the manager who then promptly came over to us. once I told the manager, her response was pretty much the same, and she tried to play it off as it being not a big deal at first, which was what upset me, since I wasn’t making a big fuss about it to begin with. She then immediately said she would take it off the bill, and that it shouldn’t of happened, and I let her know that she needs to show the kitchen to ensure this does not happen again. She also mentioned I should of told her immediately so she can swap out my food but honestly at that point I had lost my appetite. She took the napkin and headed for the kitchen and the waitress brought us our bill. Sure enough the souvlaki wrap was taken off and 18% gratuity was added on which I thought was interesting since that’s typical of parties of six or more & we were just two, but I’m assuming maybe they thought we weren’t going to tip and added the gratuity (which wasn’t going to be the case regardless of the lack of service). At no point did the manager come back up to us which I thought was interesting as well. We then paid our bill and headed out the door and she did apologize again upon our exit. It’s been a few hours and I feel the bother in my throat ever since I left. I’m not sure if it’s because a small piece of the wooden skewer got lodged in there or if it just scratched me up while trying to chew & swallow but it’s noticeably uncomfortable. I genuinely was not trying to make this a big deal and did not plan on writing a review. However, after thinking about it, I am realizing that this could have turned very bad very quick, and although I did not expect a free meal by any means, I feel as though more could have been done here. For a restaurant that had very little tables occupied during our time there, the fact that we were not even offered another drink was frustrating. I noticed that two of the tables asked for another drink, and had to flag down the waitress each time. I’m hoping this was a one off experience as I have read great reviews about this place and it’s other locations. I hope the kitchen and staff took note of this situation and are more thorough. I can forgive service that’s not stellar, a food mishap is OK once in a while, but add those two with glass shards on your table all in one night, and it seems that I probably should have made this a bigger deal than I did.

Fantastic! A little trip to Greece!

By tigerlilykelly |

This was a great meal, service and atmosphere. It is just like a little Greek cafe on the streets of a Greek island. It is small, intimate, and great food. We had the skewers, greek salads, the triple dip appetizer and white table wine. Perfect!!! We made reservations, I'd highly suggest it, especially getting into summer. There were a few outside table, but already reserved.

A taste of Mykonos in LES

By Nikos M |

This place is a true Greek experience in Lower East Side. Small, Cycladic and picturesque. The service was very good. The quality of food was high. The best part about Souvlaki.gr is the experience you earn. Feels like a warm night out in a Cycladic island!

Awesome Greek Food Truck!

By Gabriel Verrone |

First of all, this review is about the Souvlaki GR Foodtruck. Now that we are past that, let me tell you that I absolutely LOVED their Souvlaki. The combination if pretty flawless: grilled meat, warm pita, tzatziki sauce, tomato, onion and french fries. It's fantastic and I wish I had eaten much more while I was at NYC. Luckily, their food truck was parked right in front of my hotel!

Good and reasonably priced

By 753gdm |

I've been going to Souvlaki GR for three plus years, although the restaurant is always a little too crowded and space is very tight, the food is always good especially the lamb and the fresh cut fries which are super excelent.

Excellent

By SKCYCLES |

Great Greek food and drink. We went there on a VERY rainy night in NYC. Small but very friendly place. Drinks were excellent. My mojito was to die for. Food was superior. We had Greek meatballs and lamb chops. Both were excellent and we really enjoyed it.

So-so

By MisterMVA |

Atmosphere is really authentic. But the portions are really small for the price. Food was pretty good - had souvlaki pita and Greek salad. I've had a lot better. Oh and a dinky glass of red house wine is $8. The serve it in an oversized shot glass. This place just didn't cut it for me.

Not as good as I remembered

By Melanie T |

Finally tried this place again years later and it is not as good as I remembered it. Either that or maybe I just ordered the wrong thing. We started out with some Greek meatballs and Greek fries. The Greek meatballs were great, especially with the tzatziki sauce it came with. However, the fries could have used something to dip them in as well. We started using the tzatziki for it. For my main, I had the lamb burger. I liked that it was served with pita instead of a regular bun. I also liked the roasted tomatoes and the beet slaw. However, the lamb was a bit dry. With so many other Greek options in the city, I'm not sure I'll be back a third time.

Really delish!

By kevc08 |

Having just gone to Cyprus and had really good souvlaki there, we decided to try this restaurant out as we randomly walked past. Turns out it was one of the best restaurants we went to in new york. Big hearty portions but the quality wasn't compromised - we really enjoyed the salads and grilled meat. So good that we came back the next day. One more thing - my gf left her expensive camera in the restaurant and we only realized hours after. We called the restaurant up and they had kept the camera safe for us to pick up, we really appreciate the honest employees who did this for us, thank you so much!! Should say that we went here in 2013 so I'm a bit late on the reviewing but I hope things haven't changed since! Would 100% go back to try it out again next time we're in town

Small LIvely Greek Restaurant

By SLindseySanDiego |

Since we only had a brief overnight visit in NYC, we decided to try Souvlaki GR. When we arrived, we were immediately seated in the small casual restaurant at a small table half way inside the restaurant (we had reservations). We enjoyed the ambiance since it tried to emulate the Mikonos area of Greece. Along with a bottle of Greek wine, we started with two appetizers -Melitzanosalata (Eggplant) and Cheese Saganki - both were very tasty. We shared Mixed Grilled Meat Platter (for two people) and there was plenty of meat and pita. The lamb, chicken and pork were good; the Greek sausage was just okay. The pita was very fresh. The waiter was attentive - though it almost seemed she was too attentive at first. We also appreciated that our water glasses were filled as needed. This is a fun casual restaurant.

Good Food. Great Prices.

By AnnieKostyk |

Atmosphere was very Greek. Menu was good and fairly extensive. Food was great and super cheap. $41 for 2 dinners and 3 appetizers in New York! Super cozy. Service was passable.

Everywhere there is a Greek!!!!

By alekaras |

Was a surprise a Greek souvlaki restaurant at the heart of Manhattan!!! Good atmosphere, magnificent wine and food and very friendly staff! Value for money!!! Worth every dollar!! Keep going Greeks!!!

Best Greek Salad, great price, limited menu

By LBinNYC |

This is a small place in the LES. For $8, you can't beat their authentic, yummy Greek salad which comes with lots of pita bread. Can't beat a <$10 lunch or dinner in the area. Throw on a kebab for some protein and share the hummus with someone. All tasty. Cute Santorini ambiance. Casual menu, casual place. Would be fun to do a small private party here though

as close as you will ever get!!

By Eva-cyprus |

It's a principal not to visit Greek restaurants unless in Greece or Cyprus but this was an invitation outing that couldn't be turned down! to my surprise this was quite a pleasant experience. food was really nice and very close to the real stuff. iam not saying it's top Greek food but this is as good as Greek food gets abroad. lovely greeky islandy atmosphere, reasonable prices, good service.

new 56th street location is great Greek food

By Louis G |

The new location on 56th street is like stepping into a Greek street scene. All the furniture and food is from Greece. The salads are amazing, the souvlaki and lamb chops are great, and there are daily specials. The pricing is under the other neighborhood Greek restaurants be a considerable amount. Across from Carnegie Hall and close to City Center and Central Park. Service is good.

Really good

By Rabosa |

We were looking for a place to dinner, search on TripAdvisor and we went there, really good! We eat some pitas and some cheese, excelent

Great Greek food

By Jake B |

We stumbled across this place while walking in East village. The food was great but wished we knew the score and the pita we orderd was small (did not realise it was more casual dining) so order two because prices are cheap. The food was tasty and service was excellent. Woukd recommended for sure.

Yummy Greek Food!

By Tasia15 |

We accidentally found this place walking from the train to our hotel. Great timing because we needed to eat before checking out of our hotel and head to the airport. Seems strange seeing such a Greek looking taverna in Lower East Side of NYC but we were very happy to have such awesome food! Yuuuummm!!! We of course over ordered and could not eat it all but it was totally worth it. Family run restaurant and they were very friendly! Yes, will definitely visit again when I'm next in NYC. Love that NYC offers such diversity!

Nice price for a trip to Greece

By funtravelfreak |

This is such a cute restaurant. The interior is decorated to look like we were in Greece. The food felt authentic, healthy and satisfying. And not to mention, the price was great. Come here for a great Greek cuisine experience if you happen to be in the Lower East Side.

Reminds Greece

By Evagandri |

Decor is amazing. It really Feels like a greek island!!! Food is very good. It is a little bit overpriced but it's Manhattan! It's expected!!

Great food, but............

By Trampus01 |

We ate here twice during our week in NYC and for good reason, the food was excellent, good value and the place has a lovely ambience. Tucked down a small side street in the Lower East Side, it would be easy to miss it. Try not to, it's worth a visit. Take a tip and avoid the outside tables which are alarmingly uneven, set as they are on a wonky apron at the front of the place. Ah, the but. Our welcome was anything but pleasant the first time we visited, with us receiving a rather sulky, non speaking greeting from the lady inside. Not to worry, our young waitress was lovely and soon made bus feel at home. We sampled a variety of dishes, all very good and very reasonably priced. The second time we visited, we got the sulky treatment again from the same lady. Perhaps it's just because they are so busy and the staff seemed run off their feet, but in a neighbourhood where there is so much choice, a little more effort would have been appreciated. Please don't let this put you off, she warmed up later and we even got a smile (Although it could have been wind). The place has a happy hour and we visited twice for a reason, the food was great and the atmosphere lovely.

Great food and atmosphere

By doona1967 |

We loved this restaurant! Withe the decor reminiscent of a quiet, cobbled street in Mykonos, we were enchanted as soon as we walked in. Service was prompt and attentive without being pushy. We shared a bottle of the Cantharus white wine (fresh and fruity) and had the Greek salad, fries and the Bifteki pita and the SGR Bifteki pita. Generous serves and all fresh and delicious! All in all, a definite find and highly recommended.

Worth another go? Probably

By LostLondon |

Booked a table for four. Seated at a couple of small tables by the door which wasn’t ideal. Service was quick. The food was variable, chicken skewers were good, Greek salad was good, moussaka was a giant cube of tepid gelatinous stuff that bore little relation to the real thing and the same for the pastitsio. Probably worth a second chance with different dishes. I left full but underwhelmed.

Awesome food, terrible service!

By Amy C |

The place is greek-island-kitch-style but when I went in, it was smelling just like home (I'm part Greek!) The choice is great (they even have “tyrokaftedes” yum!), it’s inexpensive and you will eat delicious food listening to Greek music. The experience could have been perfect, with a better service. The lady came right after we arrived, we asked her for more time to choose and after that she was quite rude and MIA for the rest of the night. I am so sad because it's not the way Greek people are treating customers usually, and it was the only bad thing there!

A yummy lunch

By Piedecausa M |

We were lost and we didn t where to eat. We saw from outside that it was a very beautiful restaurant, and we decided to come in. Food is really nice and the prices are not expensive at all!

like a mini trip to Mykonos

By kimba524 |

Very small, but adorable... it looks like they have bigger places on W 56th & E 53d St, but from the pics online, the little one on Stanton Street is the cutest. Mezedes were very tasty (& can get with cucumbers instead of pita). The spanakopita was unexpectedly small, triangular bites, mostly phyllo dough, & my friend was not impressed. But we loved the vibe - and the mysterious table at the top of a staircase to nowhere (I'd love to eat at that table on one of my next visits).

Perfect lunch

By loujan345 |

So glad we found this little gem while exploring the area on a cold Saturday. You feel like you're in a special place. We shared a soup, salad and the cheese filled peppers, and everything was delicious.

Chill out with American Pop

By CMB |

Found out about this place on Greekcity.com.au Tried their midtown location but typically rude Greek import doorbi--ch turned me right off This olace is a quick trip on the F and well worth the trip Much more peaceful Great lamb chops and retsina Great decor but the seriously overloud amero-pop totally negates the "Greek" experience Luckily I had my Ipad with me On a plus they use Kretan olive oil as I saw the delivery man bringing it in Ill stick to Avra Midtown east and TLV UWS for a mediterranean experience

Great dinner spot

By DBox13 |

My wife and I wanted some good food after all day site-seeing. Souvlaki GR did not disappoint! We arrived around 8pm on a Thursday and it was packed. We were happy to grab 2 seats at the bar. Great service as the bartender gave us some great recommendations. We started with the chickpea salad and add a little olive oil equals amazing! We had a baked feta cheese dish with peppers on top which was unbelievable. Definitely on the go to list!

Good Price quality ratio

Quick dinner with pitas and fries. Fresh Tzatziki, Quick Service. Reasonable rates. We haven’t tried the more elaborate dishes on the menu so we can’t judge the rest. 3, water, wine, pitas, fries with tip 80$

Incredibly Greek atmosphere but food average

By Emma-Louise G |

This little restaurant is so wonderful to look at. From the outside you just want to go in and be apart of the action. Once inside, it is like you have entered a portal transporting you to Mykonos. It is beautiful but a small space but that adds to the charm and atmosphere. The food is reasonably priced and relatively quick to arrive however, I wouldn't go as far as saying I'd be desperate to go back and no dish sticks out to me as being particularly memorable. That said, I would definitely go back with friends or a big group as the atmosphere has a great buzz. Quite loud though if you are on a romantic date - maybe try and sit outside! All in all lovely but food nothing to write home about.

My New Favorite Restaurant!

By Bluegreen62 |

Wow! We were celebrating our daughter's birthday here. The new restaurant is gorgeous. The food and prices are fantastic. The service great! We were so impressed with the quality of the ingredients. Fresh and wholesome. We had it all...various appetizers...skewers of pork, chicken and shrimp. We finished it off with delicious honey dripped loukomadas. Simply, The Best Greek Food Outside of Greece. Bravo!

Cute Place

By Lara / ProsperityPassenger |

We enjoyed this small authentic place. Decorated like an outdoor cafe in greece (even though its indoor and warm)!

Fantastic shrimp pita!

By GreenAcres100 |

Oh my gosh it was delicious. Very reasonably priced lunch! Totally a place to return to! Loved the Greek decor! Service was great!

Simple and great food!

By LucianoSR |

We're trying to go to other restaurants in the area when we found this little hidden gem. The decor is beautiful, recreating the places in Greece. It serves typical Greek food, but mostly finger food and Pati (a flat bread wrapping meat or veggies). The food was excellent and very unique for us. The server was a little confused, forgot about our wine and we saw her giving wrong checks to tables. However, she was extremely friendly and as soon we got to her way of doing her job, we had fun!

Greek Oasis

By JaneHardin06 |

We stopped here for a late lunch after walking all morning in the city. The restaurant is different from the start. Looks like it belongs in Santorini with its white walls and bright blue accents everywhere. It is very small and charming. We both had the souvlaki. Delicious. If I lived nearby, I would be back to this place to explore more items on the menu! Friendly wait staff. Obviously a locals place.

Terrible service

By Anastasia D |

I had a reservation for this restaurant 2 weeks prior to the date. I had friends visiting and wanted them to have a good time, for this reason, I also called on the day to make sure everything was right and to move my reservation from 15 to 14 people. We arrived at 9pm sharp and they sat us down after 15 minutes, all good. We sit down, have water, order food, and one hour after the waiter comes and tells us that he has another reservation under the same name for 14 people. We say, how is it possible? We called various times and made sure everything was ok. He asks us to leave because the restaurant is packed and he is not able to sit the other group down. I try to make him reason because its 2 parties of 14 people, either way he is going to lose clients, er were sitting down FROM ONE HOUR, and had ORDERED food, but nothing. We made us stand up, and leave the restaurant at 10.20 pm. Service was terrible, the man did not apologize and seemed careless. I will never step foot in this place again. I know that mistakes happen but this was not the way to deal with it, leaving me and my 13 guests who made a reseervation 2 weeks prior outside in the cold in nyc on a Saturday evening where you won’t find a place to dine elsewhere.

Reasonable and tasty Greek

By Va9nessa |

They really try hard with the decor, the tables are kind of unstable especially with a lot of plates on them, and the service could be a tad better, but the food really makes us for it. We were a group of four so we got a little carried away with what we ordered. We had three dips: hummus, eggplant, and tzatziki. All three were great, but I would have ordered something else besides the tzatziki beause it comes with everything. We also had: Kolokithokeftedes (zucchini fritters)- these are great and the dip that comes with them is perfect Tyrocroquettes (fried cheese) - very similiar to mozz sticks so I would skip next time, nothing too special for me Greek salad - I love a good Greek salad and this hit the spot. They even gave me a side plate of olives because I asked for a few more! Greek fries - fries with feta and seasonings yumm Pork & chicken skewers - cooked perfectly, not over done and dry at all Greek burger pita - I didn't taste this because the two guys spilt it and devored it before my friend and I could even have a bite. I am guessing it was delicious As for wine we ordered the white Greek table wine, Retsina, but they didnt have it so the waiter upgraded us for free to the Pandeia 2013 bottle. It was a unique tasting wine that I probably wouldn't ever drink on its own but it went great with the food! We will be back when we have a craving for some Greek food. Oh and they have a Groupon!

Good food but ..

By Universe1 |

We decided to visit the restaurant during our one night layover in NY. My partner is Greek Cypriot so we are very accustomed to the dishes and was looking forward to a good "greek meal" before embarking on 2 weeks of cruise cuisine. The restaurant is small and cramped; this does however create a great atmosphere but the table are small for the amount of food provided (we didn't over order, they are just big portions). The food was great, full of flavour, well presented and as I mentioned good portion sizes. However it is expensive for what it is, $100+ for 2 starters, 2 mains, and a couple of alcoholic drinks. The service was mixed, the owners/more seasoned wait staff were friendly, attentive and efficient, however the younger servers simply didn't want to be there. Overall a mixed review, would we recommend it, yes for the food if nothing else!

Holiday in New York

By Paul S |

TIP: order TWO of whatever you choose, since the taste is delicious but serving size is small. (example :2 pita sandwiches per person as if they are tapas) This location made me feel I was back on my vacation in Greece with a charming and airy decor. Our waiter was very pleasant and friendly (even to the constant flow of trick-or-treat children stopping by this Halloween afternoon). The waiter may be a relative of the owners, unsure. Once our waiter's shift ended, however, the service was lacking. Anyway, back to the food. My friend and I each had souvlaki pitas with fine cuts of meat (an actual cut of lamb for me and a good cut of steak fro my friend). These were the real thing, not processed meats. My only sadness was that the pitas were small with little filling. The taste was so good it had us wanting more. For future dining I asked what plates come with both meat and vegetables but learned we would need to order a la carte' to do that.

Greek Island feeling in NYC!!

By Shirley I |

What to feel like you're visiting the Greek islands? Go to Souvlaki GR on Stanton Street in lower Manhattan ! The food is amazing... Don't miss the baked feta. Of course the Greek salad is a must as well. Call ahead for reservation, especially if you hope to sit outside. Our evening there was too much fun!

Saturday night in Greece

By BelJB |

Overall, this place needs to up its consistency in servers and attention to detail in listening to its diners. The decor and the food was great. The story: Dinning with some friends they found this place on yelp and because I enjoy greek food I was happy to head here. We hadn't made a reservation and were a party of 4. They initially seated us at the bar whilst a table became available. We shared the pitta and dips as a starter, which were mostly tasty apart from the houmous, which i was expecting to be the best of them all, yet it was bland. We also needed to order more pitta as we ran out before we'd finished the dips. We ordered a selection off the menu (which doesn't offer a vast choice), and waited a while for our entrees. A plate of three wraps were placed on our table and the server said chicken, pork and beef. There were four of us at the table and we'd ordered two beef, two chicken, so we weren't sure these were ours. When we were able to get the attention of the super laid-back waiter we double checked what was in the wraps, we then told him we hadn't ordered pork, and then he changed his mind and told us it was chicken. I pointed out that he hadn't brought by beef one and he said he'd go check on it. I then waited pretty much the same time again for my wrap to come out, which was disappointing as I would have likely to eat at the same time as my friends. Everyone, including me really enjoyed the taste of the wraps, and I couldn't even finish it all as it was so filling. We didn't have deserts, rather went off to the next bar.

Cheerful Greek Bistro

By NikaJunie |

The interior of this cheerful Greek restaurant creates the illusion of outdoor dining. A rather large menu covers all the basics – meat, fish, seafood, casseroles, vegetarian offerings, dips, and, of course, skewers. The food is pretty good, not as good as in up-market Greek restaurants, but more than acceptable, and that is reflected in the price. I had pastichio and would have it again.

Delicious

By Lindsay Cohn |

Delicious food (try the Greek salad, hummus, tzatziki, skewers and pita) and a fun atmosphere. Highly recommend!

Best mens' restroom on the lower east side.....

By Lieutenant_Feraud |

...and quite tastefully presented it is too. Attracted by the cool Greek blue and white village look, we stopped off for a Greek old style lemonade to avoid the mid-afternoon heat. Cute lady with short auburn hair behind the bar and acting as Maitre'D added to the charms and we have resolved to return for dinner one evening.

Oh, we just love the Greek!!!

By Behind The Scenes NYC |

Located at the Lower East Side of Manhattan, Souvlaki Gr is a Greek restaurant that brings a bit of the Mykonos spirit to Gotham. The place is small, but very inviting, with an unmistakable white and blue facade - the colors of Greece. The name is an homage to a small typical greek sandwich. It's a famous street food. There you'll be able to taste the authentic souvlaki. They've been awarded several prizes from the best food trucks in town (Yes! They've got one wondering around they city!) to the best sandwiches in Manhattan. They've got 3 locations (2 in Manhattan and 1 in Brooklyn).

Nice, quirky Greek spot with good food

By Poncho1973 |

The décor of this place is awesome. It's like you are sitting outside in Greece. The manager sat us in the table of honor in the back. You feel like you're sitting on a back porch! It was fun. It's a tiny, tiny restaurant, so I would imagine when it gets busy that it's difficult to get a seat. We walked in right before a rush. There were more workers than customers when we arrived, but when we left there were people waiting at the door for our table. I was a little surprised by the overall lack of lamb dishes on the menu, as the menu is quite extensive. They had lamb chops, but not the traditional lamb skewers or gyro sandwiches with lamb in them. The pork sausage was wonderful, though. Our table of 4 had the 3 dip appetizers (order extra pitas for $2 because you won't get quite enough) and they were delicious, especially the Tyrokafteri (spicy feta) dip. We also liked the hummus and traditional tzatziki dips. I'm not an expert after only 2 trips to Greece, but this tasted more like yogurt-based tzatziki than the cheap-o sour cream stuff you get at a lot of places. If they used sour cream, they must have jazzed it up nicely. Either way, it was really good. We had the Kalmakia Paketo (pork pita), the dinner Dolmades, the Bifteki Pita, and the Souvlaki Pita (chicken) and shared a pile of Greek fries. We all enjoyed our food. We shared a lot and we all had tastes of most of the dishes. All of our food was tasty and we had a great time. Our server was a nice guy with a thick accent. He kept us going and was attentive without being a pest. Thumbs up! I'd recommend a visit if Greek food is your thing, even if I missed having more lamb options.

Oppahh!

By margeauxmiz |

Great place to escape to! Feels like you're sitting at an outdoor cafe inside a postcard of Santorini or Mykonos, complete with a terrace cove brimming with fuscia flowers overhanging the white-washed walls. Great atmosphere, warm and welcoming hosts, great mezza and ouzu! And great Greek soundtrack :)

Great quick Greek Lunch

By EddyHobart |

Lovely sunny lunch, served quickly and the souvlaki I had was delicious. Reminded me of being home in Australia. Great little pit stop.

Best Greek in New York

By Saad Abid |

The best Greek and the waitresses are super cool. The speciality plate is grilled mixed meat and try the mythos beer. You feel like you are in Mykonos. The price is good and it's romantic

Good value and Best Falafel ever

By Amy B |

Was with a large group of 10 and ended up with tons of food and a few bottles of wine for about $50 each. We got seconds and thirds of the falafel. The decor is all blue and white with lots of small tables and random mis-matched chairs. Service was good but keep in mind this is not fine dining. Beware they only have Greek beer and wine so that was a bit of an adventure. Go with the right attitude and you will have fun.

Unique Greek place

By ytzahi |

It's a small place but so so nice. You get inside and you are in a greek village. So nice! Several plates like souvlakis 5-7$ great feta fries in 6$, soda 2.5$ and entrees 14$. I reccommend to take some small dishes. You can't compare to design, the atmosphere and service. Deffinetly try them!

Just ok

By Flytravellove |

Greek is my favorite to eat out. I’ve been to many different Greek restaurants. This place is just ok. They have all of the traditional foods. Menu is ok. What’s more is the service was just so so. We were one of two tables in there and the host seemed inconvenienced to wait on us. The best part of going here was the scenery. Very cute place, small but beautiful inside.

A little piece of Greece in NYC

By Brooke H |

I have been wanting to try this place for the past few months. Finally went on a double date with my boyfriend, best friend and her boyfriend. First of all, when you walk in you immediately feel like you've left NYC and have been magically transported to Greece, even in the dead of winter! We shared everything, which I highly recommend, that way you get to taste more. We started with the 3 spreads (tzatziki, tyrokafteri, and hummus) awesome, loved the flavors in the first two would get something besides hummus next time. Shared 4 of our waiter's recommendations. Didn't catch his name but he was from Santorini and very nice and pleasant. Ended with the mixed meat platter, I was pleasantly surprised by the sausage, it was my favorite. Of course we had Loukoumades for dessert and it was a perfect ending to a great night. We were blown away by how affordable the meal was. Each had at least 1 alcoholic beverage and 4 courses and it was less than 50$ per person! Will definitely be going back many times!

Wonderful and delectable!

By Lipstick Warriors |

Simply amazing... What three spreads to choose to accompany the pita (hot from the oven) as the mezedes: eggplant, spicy feta and yogurt-cucumber - fantastic! The lamb chops were incredible! I'd be back just for them. Fellow guests enjoyed chicken skewers, salads and the stuffed pita - delicious! p.s. Thankful that my son had made a reservation earlier in the day. We were a party of six and I forget in NYC you'll need a reservation even for a week night. Be well and stay curious, Lipstick Warriors

Felt like going home

By lutfyfamily |

Loved this restaurant. The owner is from a lovely island named Antiparos. My dad is from the sister island Paros and I still spend most summers in our home in Paros. I miss it when I am not there. This little gem made me homesick! The atmosphere is great and food authentic to the Cyclades islands. The staff was so friendly and competent. Will be going back for my fix!

Tasty bite in Greece or Lower East Side

By CMB |

Lunch after lectures at Greater New York Dental Meeting Discovered this place on my last visit to NYC September this year. Like a Greek island tavern in the middle of NYC Best lamb cutlets with a nice 14-18 Greek Rose Shame they still have the Amero-pop but you can forgive them. A delight to eat in and certainly worth the visit. The quality of the ingredients is superb - decent Greek olive oil which is 99% of the time virgin oil (Greeks aren't like the Italians!) As per my previous review I would definitely avoid the overcrowded noisy Midtown West branch and eat at the original SouvlakiGR on Stanton Street. Cant wait to visit again on my next trip to NYC

A little bit of Greece in LES

By Tardykat |

This place is so cute, the decor and style of a Greek island is replicated in the entire restaurant down to the white paint and cobble stones on the floor. It wasn't very busy a Saturday afternoon for lunch but I made reservation anyway, just in case and also to earn dining points. I tried the pork souvlaki pita and a frappe. I was a little disappointed with how the size of the pita was, it was more like a breakfast burrito size. It was filling after I drank the water and my frappe. Flavor was good, next time, will opt to add a side order of fries. The frappe wasn't very frothy with ice, more like iced coffee. Not like the real deal at all.

Good food

By TwoscoopsW |

I went here after reading reviews of this food truck turned restaurant. The food was really good although I'm personally not sold on fries in the souvlaki. The place was pretty noisy but the overall atmosphere was good.

A great find!

By Antigoniesq |

From the moment we entered, we felt as if we were in Santorini. They do place the tables quite close to each other and at 8:30 on a Saturday night, the place was packed! We were lucky to get a table quickly. The service was fast and very courteous. We shared an excellent Greek salad, and then we both had the pitta with chicken souvlaki and the spicy cheese spread - they were delicious, filling and very reasonably priced. When next in the lower east side, we will definitely go there again. A great find!

Amazing!

By Prestonwookie |

We were lucky enough to discover this fantastic little gem of a restaurant as we were staying at the hotel next door! We visited twice during our stay and it was by far the best food we had during our time in NYc and most definitely the best value. The restaurant decor makes it feel like you are eating in a Greek taverna it has a great feel and a terrific atmosphere. The staff are friendly and very efficient and most welcoming. We ordered skewers and pittas and fries and the tazikki was the best I have tasted! If you are staying in NYC I would recommend you visit. You will not be disappointed.

Have the lamb

By 231DannyC |

We went for lunch on a trip to NYC because it was recommend by a friend. The subway was all messed up the day we went so we ended up walking a good mile to get there. Glad we did. We were a table of three adults and a baby and shared 1/2 kilo of lamb, fries and a Greek salad. The lamb was awesome. Seasoned beautifully and grilled, it was smoky, pink, moist and amazingly flavorful. Make sure you order this. The salad was perfect and the fries topped with feta great too. My friend that recommend the place to me makes sure they go every time they visit NYC, So will I now!

Very good cheap eats in the LES

By Petite Fannie M |

Very good and cheap! We all had the souvlaki, which had french fries inside instead of as a side. Was confused but it ended up being very good. The greek salad was also very good and fresh. Feta cheese was amazing. Quick, friendly service. For 3 souvlaki and a salad it came to 40$ with tip. Cheapest supper I've ever had un NYC!

Just Don't Order the Chips

By Susanne M |

The food was good- especially liked the lamb chops but the chips were awful! The service was excellent. The minute we complained about the chips, they offered another dish.

Tasty food

By Impynic |

Was looking for some new greek food to try, and gave this restaurant a shot after reading some online reviews. Must try the veggie pita. They throw some fries in it and have a delicious tzatziki sauce.

Greece in New York

By Kel_London1 |

Such a cute and well designed restaurant. You genuinely feel you are in Mykonos. The service here is friendly and there’s a great buzz around. The menu is pretty extensive and the food is good. Some dishes such as the mixed meat platter could be served a little more interestingly with a bit of salad and rice to make the value for money element stronger but overall everything we ordered tasted great. A really pleasant night here in Lower East Side.

greek salad

the tomatoes, the key ingredient were soggy and should have not been served. way over priced for lack of quality.

A Little Bit of Mykonos on the Lower East Side!

By D Z |

It's tiny, when you walk in, but soon you realize that you've entered a street scene in Greece. Warm and welcoming, there are seats in the porch, in the walls and along the white and blue walls of Souvlaki GR. They have a bar, but we went with a non alcoholic Ouzo soda which was delicious! We had the SGR Loukaniko Pita which is Greek sausage wrapped in pita, tomato, red onion, feta and Tyrokafteri ( spicy cheese spread) and the Souvlaki Chicken Pita (Tomato, red onions, fries and tzatziki ). Both were wonderful, fresh tasting! Dessert was Loukoumades ( Fried dough drizzled with honey, walnuts and cinnamon) took a while, as we found out, the chef had made the batter and fried it as we were waiting. And well worth the wait!! Hot sweet, nutty, and light as air. Worth finding at either Stanton ST or their Midtown Location...AND they have a blue food truck nearby!!

well it was not horrible

however...my friend and i was served our food our main course on one plate, plus the food was ok...come to victoria canada if you want good greek food.

Great experience, great service and I haven't gotten to the food

By James H |

Most Authentic Greek food, not just Gyros, Grilled Octopus was incredible, recommended by the server. I think he might be vegan, lol. Seriously worth going

Great food, TERRIBLE service

By Chris C |

Adorable place - close as you get to a seaside cafe in Santorini - all faux painted stone floor, bright white and blue and string lights everywhere. I wish the service matched - "Did you order?" "Did you get your food?" - well, no, but you are the waitress you should know. Luckily the food was excellent - really rally nicely cooked little lamb lollipops, tasty pita triangles and tzatziki sauce At the end of the meal she cleared my plates then there was a ridiculous wait for a check to appear - without asking me if I wanted some baklava (I did - oh well, even less tip for you.) Overall I like the place a d the food so it is a shame 2 stars with one off for the scattered, forgetful service which left me disappointing and thinking about walking out without paying.

Cool Greek food.

By Fotografos1 |

I recently visited the Souvlaki GR on 56th Street. Just opened a few weeks ago. It was a short but very pleasant trip to Greece. Ideal for forgetting your problems and having a nice lunch or diner. Classic Greek cuisine.

Great Greek!

By LastSecondTraveller |

Friend and his family were visiting from the North West. They requested Greek for lunch. Everything was delicious and the service friendly. My friends commented that inside Souvlaki they felt as if they were back in Greece. A high complement as both my friend and his wife have worked in the hotel and restaurant industry for over 20 years. They have traveled the world, managed some of the most famous destinations and been international consultants. And they loved the place. Nice job!

Always Souvlaki GR for me!!!

By CMB |

Arguably the best Greek food in NYC I always visit Stanton street when in NYC several times and cant wait to visit several times during my stays in NYC Staff arethe same everytime The best paiidakia (lamb chops) and a selection of very well priced Greek wines In fact as Im writing this I am planning my meal there in an hour or so

Authentic Greek in the Lower East Side

By juniperchick |

When we saw FIX (a local Athenian beer) in the beer fridge, I knew this was going to be good. The restaurant looks like a street in the islands, whitewash walls, blue doors, and even the signage were very Greek. You could almost be in Greece. We ordered some taramasalata (cod roe dip) and tirokafteri (spicy cheese dip) to start - they tasted home made, none of those fluorescent pink dips that you get in the shops. For mains, we had a selection of gyros, kalamakia and Greek fries to share. We also had some Greek wine. We could have ordered everything on the menu, but we just couldn't possibly eat more. I go to Greece quite often and I can say that the food here is really authentic. Love it!

Real Greek Place

By ClintonChef |

We went for dinner while visiting the tree and Rockafeller Center with our 2 children and had a great experience. The menu is simplistic but covers all bases. Prices are very reasonable for being in Midtown. Our service was superb from a server that was really actually greek, he was great with our kids and they accommodated our double stroller. Definitely will be back!!!

Friendly, reasonable prices , authentic food Greek food

By Jsquared69 |

We were hungry after a later theatre show and came across this restaurant. A very friendly welcome , and prompt service. Best value for money we had in New York. Lamb burger was superb as was the souvlaki . Dry santorini white wine was v good , too . Inside is white plaster , and blue trim , just like in Greece . Lots of open windows for ventilation on a warm evening . Pretty sure a Greek family must own and cook the food . Would eat here again , and Thankyou to the folks there for the genuine warmth and hospitality.

Definitely the best greek experience you can have in NYC

By Ari A |

Great and cozy atmosphere, you eat good traditional greek food while you feel in Mykonos. Great service and excellent value in general! Highly recommended!

Fun night

By Roccolein |

The place is so nice that you can not enjoy the night! Service is good and people working there are so kind. I would suggest it for a dinner in more than 3 people because they literally let you have fun. Food is classic Greek cuisine and is pretty good. Anyway if you like typical restaurant this is a must to see in New York during the weekend.

Greek GEM in Stanton Street

By Evan C |

On the south side of East Houston street lies this unmistakably Greek Restaurant. As you walk down Stanton Street it almost pops out in your face with its Santorini like façade. What’s on the inside is the killer. Great Greek food at great prices. My wife and I ate a souvlaki each, with a chick pea salad on the side, a Mythos and we may have even had desert for all under $40.00. Service is quick, dĂ©cor is authentic, it is very well priced and the food is very good. Highly recommended.

Great food, excellent decor, nice and Cozy

Feels like a small Greek Island town; white washed houses and gulleys with tables everywhere. Excellent Lamb chops and Gyros, Souvlaki and greek wine. Highly recommended. You should try and come early as I dont believe they take reservations; gets full fast.

THE BEST LAMB CHOPS IN GR or NYC

By CMB |

When in NYC where else to eat but SouvlakiGR The Original Well priced lamb cutlets which are so delish and melt in your mouth!! Good Greek music playing (see my previous reviews about the Amero-pop), great Greek wines and tzatziki just like Mum makes! 3 locations to chose from Lower East Side the New Midtown East both with exoteric service and the hit N miss Central Park South location where it is likely you will have a bottle of wine broken on you because it is cramped you are seated in the hallway to Kouzina and being 6ft 3 you are only offered a table in a less hazardous area after the waiter smashes your bottle of Santorini wine on you rushing past you in the cramped environment So this trip after the drenched visit to CPS location went to the great Midtown East and LES

Great food, awful service!

By v91 |

Being big fans of Greek we had to give this a try but apart from the food there isn't much more I would rate. Service was probably one of the worst I've ever had, we were left sitting there for ages while the women serving stood behind the bar on her phone. When I asked about orange juice/soft drinks I just got shouted at as if I was being a nuisance so stuck to water. Drinks were slammed down on the table with no recognition and the atmosphere felt hostile. Noticed that many other people also recognised how rude this women was and she mainly ignored most people coming in whilst standing on her phone. On the other hand the guy that worked there serving the food and helping people with takeaways etc was really nice and polite and the food was really tasty!

Great food, good prices, cute place

By wabitop |

This is a seriously adorable place in the Lower East Side that serves traditional taverna food and it is definitely worth the visit. The service is good, the food, excellent and the value is great. I ordered the horiatiki salad, a traditional greek salad and it was perfect. Rarely is it done well outside of Greece so kudos to them. I had some souvlaki and greek fries and they were also wonderful. The decor is super cute, like a little island taverna. it borders on cheesy but I loved it.

Informal and great Greek

Great location - zero pretentious - fantastic Greek food - brilliant service - fun crowd - great place to just pop into and be sure of a small space in a very busy (in a good way) restaurant

Appauling, nothing authentic, don't waste your time

By Kayleigh M |

Appalling, poor quality, dont waste your time Where do I start....you want authentic Greek Cuisine DO NOT GO THERE! Appauling service nothing like what the Greek culture is. The only thing that resembles Greece it the blue and white paint that you see. Food cold and frozen, poor hygiene as i found hair in my meal and very miserable rude staff! Coming from a European country I understand tips and the culture of it in the US but the icing on this disgusting cake is the text we received saying "I'm very cheap" after asking for the frozen food to be removed from my bill as it was unedable. The worse meal and experience by far in New York. I will never be recommending or advising anyone from Europe to visit I will tell them it is nothing like Greece!!!! Just a poor show of an attempt at pretending to be Greek!!! My tip to them.....visit the country gain some authenticity and manners oh and service standards while your at it.

Wonderful Lamb chops

Great find

Had a lovely lunch at Souvlaki GR last weekend. Great Souvlaki Pita's very fresh and great flavour, Keo Lager as well which had travelled well from Cyprus. Great friendly service too.

Pure atmosphere. Food to improve.

The location is perfect...magic lights, greek colours, tipical furniture...a full immersion in a greek street! Honestly, Food is good, tasty, fast...but not excellent.

Food delicious

By Compass505846 |

This place has a great atmosphere with a lovely Greek vibe felt like I was in Santorini all over again. Good was delicious. My only complaint was cramped for space and we were put under a little pressure to leave once we ate.

Like being in Greece

By mpyls |

Souvlaki GR transports me back to being in Greece whenever I start to miss it. The food is great and the Greek fries are awesome- it's an authentic experience and the ambiance feels like you are in a tiny street in Mykonos. Really great food for reasonable prices.

Genuine Greek on the Lower East Side

By Walking and exploring |

We were zigzagging around Lower East Side and it was time to choose a place for lunch. We had been freezing during our stay in New York but it was finally the first warm day during we had so we decided to go to a place that looked like a restaurant from a Mediterranean country. The doors were welcomingly open and there was outside seating area too. Once we stepped inside we felt like we were in Greece. Very authentic interior décor: Blue and White interior, white floor with blue spots, blue window panes, floral arrangements. Greek music playing. We ordered bifteki pita and souvlaki pita with loukaniko sausage (lamb and pork sausage with orange peel). Fresh ingredients and good quality feta cheese. Both were very delicious but the portions could have been bigger especially if you are walking around Manhattan all day
They also have Greek products like biscuits and crackers for sale. Quick and friendly service. All in all wonderful setting for lunch.

Would be disappointed if there weren't many other good places to eat

By Maxman1 |

Had an Open Table reservation for 4 people that the restaurant didn't honor because "we are having a problem with Open Table"- looked as though they were just too busy at 8 PM on a Saturday night to worry about reservations. Don't count on a seat even if you have a reservation

Am I on Greece or NYC?

By CMB |

Always have to visit for the best greek food made with high quality greek produce. You leave the brash mayhem of NYC and step into a taverna in the Greek Isles when you walk through the door. Very well priced for NYC and worth the visit.I recommend the lamb chops washed down with some nice refreshing greek retsina Cant wait to eat here again in November on my next visit to NYC

Charming Greek restaurant

By geniesue |

Wonderful Greek restaurant, located in midtown. Cozy interior, also features both outdoor and indoor seating. The staff is friendly and provide excellent service. The food was delicious! I had Salmon skewers with peppers, tomatoes and onion, sautéed spinach on the side. Everything was perfectly seasoned and resented beautifully!

Favorite Greek Restaurant in the City!

By seekingsunshine_1020 |

This place is the best! They create an amazing atmosphere that takes me back to my time traveling around Greece, and they even have Greek music playing in the background. There is a choice of seating inside at a table, at the bar or on the patio. Now for the food...so good and super affordable! We started with an appetizer of pita and tzatziki then moved on to chicken souvlaki and Greek salad. Everything was super fresh and delicious. You will not be disappointed!

Poor service, average food

By Lewisc |

Booked a table for 20.30 and was told to wait 10 mins. After 30 mins waiting was told another 10 mins. Service was very slow to take our order and then the drinks took 15 mins to arrive. The food was ok not great. I complained about the wait and the waitress apologised but did nothing to make up for it. It's a small busy restaurant but had more than enough staff for the amount of tables. This was the only disappointing meal I've had in Manhatten...plenty of other good restaurants.

Bustling

By Aaron P |

We arrived around 9:15 pm on a Wednesday evening, and the place was jammed. But a table opened up quickly in this small, charming restaurant. Excellent spreads and lamb souvlaki pita at modest prices. The wines by the glass were cheap, small, and forgettable. Not a destination restaurant, but a fine choice if you’re in the neighborhood.

Such a cute place

By runawaycherrybomb |

Amazing little restaurant, tiny but bustling. Can fool you into thinking you're sitting outside in Greece not in the middle of NYC. Friendly, quick service. I had the pita souvlaki which was very delicious but it was just a bit too small! Baklava for dessert was really good. Only complaint is the price. $11 for a dessert, $8 for the tiniest glass of wine. We were expecting to just grab a quick bite and ended up spending $75!

Newest Greek Grill in Midtown

By David S |

This is a new outlet for these folks who have other outlets in NYC (including a food truck). It's on 56th between 6th and 5th Aves. Small, and somewhat cramped, but with excellent food and service. The prices are amazingly low for the quality and quantity of food. Try the egg and lemon soup as a starter. You'll be delighted.

Tiny little greek restaurant

By ramsesp |

We discovered this little greek restaurant accidentally in the Internet. We are visiting Greece at least once a year so I think we know greek food very well. This little restaurant in East Village is awful. It looks inside like a greek taverna somewhere on a distant aegean island. And food smells and tastes like genuine greek food. And: they have genunine greek Mythos beer. Tip: Try to get a seat on the little balcony

Dinner served by Hercules!

By Kyriaki08 |

Yes indeed our wonderful server is named Hercules! Have wanted to try this pace and finally did. Grabbed a quick dinner on our way home to the burbs. Decided on a few apps and all were delicious. Can totally vouch for the authentic flavors as we are Greek. Had Greek fries with feta and oregano (pleasantly surprised at three quality of feta as it usually is sub par in many restaurants); loukaniko (grilled sausage w/ orange); perfectly grilled octopus (always our test for authenticity). We were too full to eat anything else but will definitely be back. Don't forget a bottle of Fix beer for that real Greek food experience!

Very enjoyable!

By BranLil |

Came here after my friend recommended it. She said she spent a semester in Greece and this restaurant was a true reflection of authentic Greek food. We were fortunate to grab a seat outside and really enjoyed watching the activity on the street while we chatted and ate our meal leisurely. We had salad and the Psita tis Oras Poikilia. Scrumptious! Too much food for the two of us but we pigged out and ate it all anyway! Ben was one of the waiters and very fun, pleasant guy! The subway stop was a short walk away. Overall a great experience and we will recommend it to all our friends!

Authentic and excellent

By foodie_bob |

If you like good Greek food, then this place is for you. The inside was very authentic and it made us feel like we were back in Greece. We were unable to try some of the items that we previously had from their catering however the stuff we had was still outstanding. We started with a Greek salad, then souvlaki and we shared an eggplant dish. The roasted eggplant with caramelized onions, tomato sauce and feta cheese was the highlight for me. Service was also good and I like it when they leave a bottle of water on the table. They waiter was also helpful and hooked us up even though they ran out of baklava. Can't wait to go back!!!!

This is a quaint small restaurant offering Greek food. The service is good and the food delicious. Expensive by UK standards.

Little piece of Greece in the city

By K M |

This little spot is worth going out of the way although it's very near theater district so it should be serious contender for pre or post theater meal. Good is really great. VERY GREEK!! Souvlaki, keftedis, gyros, meat skewers, hummus dip, tsatsiki dip, warm pita...I'm making myself hungry! As someone who spends a lot of time in the Greek Islands, I'm very picky about Greek food here in America and I just love this place. It's decorated to look like an authentic Greek Island square and the waiters are all Greek so it's not hard to believe you're there. Not too expensive, good food, great atmosphere, fun waiters, well you get the idea. Give it a try.

Excellent service, great affordable food

By James M |

Coming from a country that has westernised greek food I don't actually have the experience of authentic Greek food to compare to but what they serve at Souvlaki GR is damn tasty. Seemed very affordable and the staff were extremely helpful given our naivety with the menu. Got a generous tip
