Awesome

Amazing place definitely going back. The staff is the best and the quality is unbelievable shout out to everyone.

Avoid

By Tom B |

Probably the most overpriced and poorest culinary experience to date on this planet. Cold, tasteless mussels from a tin served on cheap potato chips (crisps) was definitely the lowlight. Being English we’d expected Spanish/French style mussels with French fries (chips) but unfortunately got served up something so tasteless and laughable that I was just glad it was my kids that ordered it. My wife had starchy flavourless rice, unseasoned fried eggs and a couple of pokey sausage that looked like they came from another tin finished off with a lovely stroke of genius - a line of ketchup as the house sauce! She usually sees the positive in any situation but even she was raging! The only slight upside were the patatas bravas - crispy and with a good sauce but of course the portion was tiny and the price high for these and eaten far better versions previously.

Paella!!!!

By Jose C |

This place was Surprisingly delicious. I had the mixed paella and I have to say it has been one of the best one I’ve ever had. The consistency was to perfection. The amount of seafood and meats was a lot. Everything was fresh and really good. The price was also very responsible for the location amount and quality.

At Last!

By FAFINI |

I have been invited to dine here for years, I finally had the pleasure over the weekend. To sum it up, I had an outstanding meal. Apps arrive along with bread the moment you are seated. Good variety, the chorizo and mini lamb chops stood out. The Paella Valenciana was simply OUTSTANDING! Large portion with generous amount of seafood. The place has an unpretentious old school vibe, with older attentive servers. Great Sangria, and they only accept cash. Highly recommended, enjoy!

Unbelievable food

By scmoose |

Ok, so the place is off of the beaten path and doesnt look like much, but looks can be deceiving. My wife had been there with some friends a couple of years ago, and as we were in town for our aniversary, we had to go. We were with some friends from Brooklyn who know the area, but had never been before either. We were immediately greated & seated in the large back room of the place and served appitizers and drinks before we could ask. Unbelievable service. Too many items to list. We each had the seafood paella for two (which could feed 4), a pitcher of sangria, and walked out paying $100 plus tip. Two boxes to take away too. Make the trip here if you are anywhere near the city. Its well worth it!!

Restaurant has changed for the worst

By nutrajus2006 |

I usually had a great meal in the past but now was my worst ever.used to get mussels chorizo and other stuff before meal but now 4 meatballs only.meal took 40 minutes to come and was tasteless.bill went up quality went down.spoke to manager who was rude and said i give extras from the heart.well i guess he had no heart today and was extremely rude.i left as soon as i finished with no tip.i will never return to this old never renovated broken chair lousy seating arrangement restaurant if it was free.

Still good after all these years

By PaulyJ201 |

I hadn't gone to this restaurant in many, many years. I believe they only take cash. Appetizers came free of charge. The meal was very good, the service was good, the decor pleasant, a nice quite place (when we were there), perhaps a throw-back to a different time, but surprisingly still reliably good. If you are looking for a trendy, over-priced place, don't go here. If you remember what a cozy restaurant was with good food, pleasant service, and homey, try this one out. We enjoyed what we ordered, and I took half mine home... Glad it came back on my radar!!

Truly unbelievable. Feels like you have gone back 30 years.

By DEBurns |

Truly unbelievable value for what you get. Almost too good to believe. Don't be scared off when the waiter puts a salad and 3-4 appetizers on your table almost immediately after you sit down and you are not charged for them. Atmosphere feels and looks like it has not change or been updated since the place opened but the food is very good and the prices are unbelievably reasonable.

super authentic and back to the past

By Travelleralways2 |

we dropped in at lunch time and had some small paltes (tapas style) sitting at the bar and wow did i feel like we had stepped back in time to 1950s spain. the food tasted very good and was a defintie bargain price; the service was fast and efficient; I would say worth stopping by if you in the neighbourhood and want some authentic tasting food -

Unexpected find

By Gracie |

I was in the area, looking for a place to eat and it was there. I didn't think it was something that I would love by looking from outside. Once I got in, I knew it would be great. People are nice and food was great. The signature dish, paella valenciana was fantastic!

Spain - Enjoy the Sangria

By FrugaltravelerGR |

This was our last stop on an afternoon- evening wander through the west village. We wanted a drink and some appetizers - tapas. We were greeted by an elderly gentleman who showed us to a table in the front. The decor was old. But we did not go there to eat the decor. We ordered a pitcher of red Sangria and (4) appetizers - Fried Calamari ($7), Shrimp in garlic sauce, chicken livers and fried potato chips. The bar area was empty. The main dining room was not very busy either. It was a Friday evening in August. The service was very attentive. Food arrived quickly. It was very satisfying. I did not have the chicken livers. Those who did enjoyed them. Prices were very reasonable. Food OK. Service was adequate but not overly-friendly. BTW The Sangria was very refreshing. Would I go back? Yes.

50 years of great food and service

By bobsonera |

This is the last of the Spanish restaurants that once dotted West 14th street. Maybe it survived because its on 13th street. I went there with my parents many years ago. Then as a parent, now as a grandparent. The meal begins with an assortment of tapas, a simple salad, and bread and butter. There isn't one entree I would recommend over another; it all depends on what you would like that day. Everything is made to order, and delicious, in portions that encourage sharing because they are large! There is a full bar set away from the main dining room and a smaller semi-private room opposite the kitchen. It's comforting to come back to the same place year after year knowing you won't be disappointed by the food or find a high rise on the spot where so many happy memories occurred.

It's almost kitschy

By aaw926 |

Really good food and plenty of it. Not to mention all the freebie tapas that arrive as soon as you sit down. The place is decidedly in need of a makeover but we don't care. Go and enjoy. Note the updated uniforms for the waiters: polo shirts! Can you believe it!

Aya Carumba! Amazing Paella on 13th Street in West Village

By FabInSanFran |

We opted to order and take the food home to our apartment on same block. The ambiance in this adorable establishment is precious as is the 'mature' Owner behind the bar with his antique cash register. Read the write up in their sidewalk case - SPAIN is a real West Village established establishment. We ordered the combination Paella and for $20 it was loaded with seafood and meat and steaming hot even for our walk down the block. Ended up having so much leftover we devoured it the next night. Also loved the small garlic prawns appetizer and WOW to the flan. I don't feel this is a tapas restaurant but truly it's a real authentic Paella restaurant. Cannot wait to return.

This place is horrible

So I was playing monopoly today on my playstation four entertainment system and would just like to say what an amazing £11 I spent best game ever it is much better than paying for a meal at this dump.

Excellent

Excellent food. Wonderful service. The paella Valenciana was delicious. We had an emergency our friend fainted and immediately they call for an ambulance and were very caring .and professional. I would Recommend this place .price was also right.

Me gusta - you willl too!

The Spain is a throwback to another time in another Greenwich Village. It is an old school Spanish restaurant and old school NY. That's what I love about it. The fare is standard Iberian, generously served and reasonably priced. No soner had I sat down than the waiter laid on the table various small plates of appetizers: chorizo, mussels and meatballs. This is the way Spanish restaurants were before they started charging through the nose for appetizers and calling them tapas. I followed the tapas with the zarzuela de mariscos, which was very generous with the shrimp and shellfish and included a half a lobster tail. White table cloths and napkins and an elegant back room. Give it a try if strolling around the Village. I'll definitely be back. Volvere'!

Go for the appetizers and the Paella Valenciana. They give you enormous amounts of food, excellent prices, and great service (though the restaurant seems a little dingy and outdated).

Lo Peor (the worst)

By pkgreen2018 |

I went to school in Spain. I was very excited to meet my friend at this local restaurant/bar in her neighborhood. I walking inside the building and found the place reminded me of my days of school but also a little dirty. I also knew that the bartender, Luis, has been there for many years. He was cantankerous and rude. I called my friend and we met at another place down the street. We then found out that the bartender is not just the bartender. He is the owner who not only owns the restaurant. He basically sponges off of the local kids attending NYU. He doesn't care. He doesn't have to.

Hear many great things... exceeded all expectations!

By Diandra M |

A good friend was in town over the weekend and invited me to dinner. When I found out I was dining at Spain I was really excited. I have another friend, and Spain is her go to resturant. Some how I never did make it there until the other night. Well let me tell you it did not disappoint! When you are seated they bring out along with the bread, salad (not crazy about the dressing) mussels, chorizo and mini lamb chops. We ordered the first of a few pitchers of sangria. For entrees, my friend ordered (not on the menu but available if you are in the know) lobster tails. It looked delish. Her partner ordered a chicken dish which I sampled that was good but no wow factor. I ordered Paella Valencia... OUTSTANDING. It was a generous portion with a healthy amount of chicken, mussels, clams, shrimp and lobster! I took a great deal of it home and it was even better for lunch the following day. Great service, large portions and entrees in the $20 range. A must do, highly recommended!

Fun grumpy old waiters

By gfarmer668 |

The food was delicious and plentiful. The servers are grumpy but fun and service is quick. They do bring you little plates of meatballs and fried potatoes. It's kind of like a little piece of Spain.

A throwback to earlier times

By Kitty272727 |

We have been coming here for the past 30 years, and it hasn’t changed, except now there is no smoking (we has a little to-do about that years ago). As soon as you are seated, an array of appetizers arrive: slices of chorizo, garnished mussels, meatballs, etc. The main courses are plentiful and often one is enough for two. The seafood paellas and partridges (!) are excellent. Some meat and fish dishes come with the same slightly sweet and sour brown sauce with almonds on top, called española or almondine or something else, but it’s not bad, better on meat but overpowering on fish. Patatas bravas and the thick homemade potato chips are great. Sangria was the drink of choice at all the other tables, but we had good carafes of red wine. Service is efficient and cordial. The room is a mess with peeling paint, old darkened oil paintings, banquettes with missing springs. But we love it.

Great find

By Tasha9914 |

This is a place that my family has been coming to for a long time and is a true gem. The food is amazing and you get plenty of it. The prices are very reasonable for what you get. The decor has been the same for ages and some may say needs to be updated but that's what gives this place it's wonderful charm. The main dining hall can be very loud when filled up but the food and service and old world charm is worth it. When visiting NYC or if you live in the city its a place that must be visited!!

As Ever- Awesome

By BigRich5 |

I've been going to Spain since my parents first took me there in -- what??? -- 1969. I live in South Florida now, so I only get an opportunity to eat here once in a blue moon these days. I'm firmly on the side of the people who say, "What are you getting all worked up about?" The place is true to itself. Nothing has changed -- I think that it's even the same salad bowls! If you judge food by 'fancy', then you'd be better served elsewhere. Here's our report: There were three of us. The free appetizers were Meatballs, Mussels and Chorizo. We split the Pork in Almond Sauce as our paid Appetizer, and shared a Paella, Mariscada, and a Shrimp in Green Sauce for our Main Courses. The food was plentiful and as good as ever. The service -- at least for us -- was very attentive. The Manager (same guy forever) either remembered me or did a good job of faking it, so I felt at home. And it was very inexpensive, especially considering it was New York and Seafood. The four main dishes, plus the free stuff, no drinks, no dessert was $91.25 plus tip. Call it $120. You can't get out of most chain places for much less than $25 per person, and you're not eating like we did last night. Every time I return to New York, I walk down 13th Street, fearing that the space will be occupied by a Starbucks or Yogurt shop. I know that day will come eventually; I just hope it won't be for a long while.

Lovely classic Spanish restaurant in NY’s Village

By Paula M |

It was a miserable rainy night and it was such a welcoming place. We were in a bit of a hurry to get to a concert but we never felt rushed. I felt as though I was in sunny Spain. Though the place is a bit past it’s prime it added to the comfortable vibe.

Be Prepared for Great Food and Friendly Service

By psr707070 |

Spain has been in business more than 50 years. Here 'a why they have been successful. They serve delicious Spanish style cuisine and plenty of it. We sat down and immediately they gave us fresh bread, mussels with cerviche, fried chorizo, and a salad. We ordered four dishes for four people, which turned out to be too much. We had the shrimp in green sauce, ribs in fruit sauce, veal in almond sauce and paella with lobster. They also served Spanish rice with the dinners. For dessert we tried the flan which was good. We also drank pitchers of red .sangria which was tasty. The service was attentive and the waiters let us sit afterwards to relax from our dinners. The atmosphere is a little dated, but the Spanish music in the background added a festive atmosphere. Overall, Spain is a great restaurant that deserves another 50 years. BE WARNED: they only accept cash for payment , no credit cards.

This is old-time Spanish...

This is old-time Spanish tavern. Food is decent but there's plenty better.

Lousy food poorly perpared- A perfectly AWFUL restaurant!

By Skolenator |

This restaurant has been around for a very long time, but I cannot imagine why. I met a friend for his birthday for drinks, and stayed for dinner, against my better judgment. My judgment was borne out. This place does not feel particularly clean. I ordered the veal in an almond sauce, which was too sweet and perfectly awful. I would not eat more than the first few bites. The fish and seafood dishes looked completely unappealing. I was sorry I went, could not wait to leave, and would not return under any circumstances. Oh yeah, CASH ONLY!

Good example of never judge a book by its cover!

By Cdelaney86 |

Went there while on a business trip, was traveling with a coworker who said hes been going there for years. If I was traveling alone and passed by the place I probably wouldn't have went in there. The view of the place wasn't that attractive. I can say however I will go back again if I'm in the area. The food is beyond delish, the wait staff are very friendly. And the food is probably the best priced in NYC. I they made a franchise they would probably put red lobster out of business. I have never eaten such a variety and large amount of sea food for just $25. Looking forward to my next visit to NYC just so I can eat here again.

I love this place. If yer snobby, don't go. If you don't have cash, don't go. If you need upscale presentations to make teh food taste good, don't go. if you want some damn good paella, pork chops, shrimp and lobster, with some great sangria too, do go. and tip good, cuz it's cheap, and the waiters deserve it.

Ignore the decor enjoy the food.

By sophiegirl0814 |

We have been visiting this restaurant since the 1980s. Your first impression is OMG I walked in to tge 1970s. The food however is delicious and very generous portions! They give complimentary appetizers which are very tasty - chorizos mussels meatballs. This is in addition to their salad and bread. All dinners are served with family style rice and potatoes. The severs have been there forever and add to the character of this neighborhood staple establishment!

Great find

By evolpe |

I have eaten here for the last 30 years. As soon as you sit down they start feeding you. The sangria is delicious and so is the food.

Don't bother.

By clutterwhisperer |

I read the Sept 18, 2016 New York Times review of Spain, the restaurant, and was enticed by its "quaintness". So I dropped in last night. I was not amused by the surly bartender, even if he is 81 years old. He doesn't interact with the bar patrons. Doesn't smile. Snickered when I asked for the tapas after my first glass of wine. Rushed me to leave after a couple (small) glasses of wine when it was clear that I didn't want a refill. I went on a tapas safari in San Sebastian in the Basque region several years ago. Spain the restaurant can't compare. Meatballs and very salty patatas bravas doused in hot sauce are not my idea of tapas. Don't waste your time and money in this place.

Wanted to love it; didn't

By Tiny Traveloguer |

This review is written in the spirit of friendly advice for the owner or manager. This restaurant needs more TLC and a chef who can better honor the wonders of Spanish cuisine. It could be a gem. Let's begin with the positives: -Old school restaurant in Greenwich Village, near Little Spain. Wonderful neighborhood feel; does have the ambiance of being in Spain. You feel like you are on vacation. -Extremely courteous and nice waiters. -Bar and tables in front full of happy revelers. -Back, main part of restaurant large with cushioned bench seating on the entire perimeter. -High ceilings; old-school charm. Now the unfortunate negatives on the space: -The main room was not clean. Dust lined the back of that charming cushioned bench; paint was chipping from those high ceilings; we shuddered to think that a paint chip could fall in someone's food--and wondered how the space passed inspection. -The ambiance could be much improved with warmer lighting. The lights had a blue fluorescent hue, which is not very romantic or charming. Now the food and wine: -It was nice to have gratis appetizers of meatballs, chorizo, and paella-filled mussels but, although, good concepts, the chef didn't really pull them off (not that chorizo required intervention, so that was a quality issue). -The paella marinera (seafood paella) was piping hot but the rice was pedestrian and the seasonings bla, and the shellfish was overcooked. -The shrimp in the "shrimp in green sauce" tasted like they were bought from a grocery store frozen foods aisle. They were not browned at all. The broth was fine but a git insipid. -The portions were large. We couldn't finish the food, but it was sub-par so we declined a doggie bag. -The rioja wine was just okay, but then again it was only $5 a glass, so no real complaint there Further comment: It was one of the worst meals we've had out in NYC, but we have to admit that the people around us while we were dining and the people in the front room, whom we saw on our way out, looked like they were really enjoying themselves. Perhaps this restaurant is for people who want volume. Again, we LOVE Spanish food. We ate better in Spain than on visits to Italy or France. This restaurant, however, in our opinion does not do that great cuisine justice.

"Food still good after all this time"

By bigglow |

We have not been back to this restaurant in many years. We were there last night July 19th and while the food is still very good and I gave the very good rating because of the food only I feel that this restaurant needs a total overhaul from the entrance to the back dining room. I suppose they have not done so to keep the prices as low as they are but the restrooms were just awful and if you are seated on one of the stuffed seats you are going to be uncomfortable because they need to be upholstered or just gotten rid of. The food was very good and the sangria was wonderful. The portions are large and they put appetizers on the table so you really do not need more than to order your dinner portion to be happy. They take cash only so be prepared. We will go back again because I do like the food and the prices but they are sorely in need of an update. One other note was the service was slow and it took a while to get their attention but I think this was because of the fact that they only had two servers to do everything and they had one large party who because they spoke Spanish got their attention before we did.

Good food and service and best sangria at a good price

By anamatopeya |

The place is not fancy, and is very casual. But the sangria is the best I've had in a long time, and the food is good. In spite of the large portions, the prices are affordable. The only turn off for us was a grouchy old man that was very unpleasant when we arrived and wouldn't let us sit inside while we waited for the rest of our party of twelve to arrive. I was told by a waiter that he was there just temporarily while the owner was out of town. No harm done. No need to dress up. Don't go if you have toddlers, as they do not have high chairs. The waiters are very polite and attentive.

My Favorite NYC Restaurant

By Alex L |

After so many years of eating at this amazing restaurant, the food has been exactly the same since I was a child, simply delicious. Same waiters, same decor, CASH only, "it may seem a hole in the wall" but excellent in so many ways. Fast service, tapas to die for, so much food before you order, cozy and excellent Spaniard food.... Red pitcher of sangria, costillitas (delicious ribs) and Paella Marinera are a MUST ORDER. I have taken so many people to this restaurant throughout my life, and they have become loyal customers just like me. It's like being in Spain, with Spaniard waiters. Portions are big I always end up taking food home, which I love.

Spain in NYC

Eating there over 30 years. Same owner, servers and decor. Food is the best Spanish I have had and have eaten in many Spanish Restaurants too. Decor is shabby but the food is far more superior.

Wonderful Old Time Greenwich Village

By PAM_from_LINY |

I came here in January 2016 for the first time since the late 1990's. My first visit was in 1978 and the Spain was my favorite restaurant throughout the 1980's and 1990's. The original owners still are actively running the place, Julio works the dining room with his son, both are incredibly friendly. The appetizers are tasty and the main courses have not changed at all over the years. My favorite, veal with almond sauce, is exactly the same, as were the shrimp gambas and the home made flan. The prices are very reasonable. The service is warm and professional. The tables still have cloths on them as well. The decor is wonderfully old and what old Greenwich Village is all about. I was so elated to see familiar faces and to enjoy my favorite dishes which brought back good memories.

WHAT a little gem

By isobur |

Went to the bar here for drinks- had a jug of Sangria and they brought us tapas as bar snacks - potato brava, meat balls, more potato brava, chorizo and garlic chicken wings- a whole meal. THEN, they only charged for the sangria - what ? Needless to say we left a bigger than normal tip. The 2 old men serving are real characters and couldn't do enough for us, place was packed. Would definitely be back.

Quick lunch...

By handslol |

Had the chicken liver app and sangria. The chicken livers were tasty but a bit dry. Sangria was good and you get small pitcher for a decent price. I didn't get any of the "free" apps that everyone mentions, could be because i told the waiter that I was only getting an app...

A lot of food-Great tapas.

By Escapee1 |

This restaurant has been around for 40 plus years and it shows. The restaurant is very tired looking. The food is OK. The tapas that they give you before your food is the best thing you can eat there. Do not think I would eat there again.

pink eye

By felice r |

so as my friends and I walked into this restaurant again, 3/20/16, after having been there just last year, I noticed the older waiter having pink eye with pus oozing from his right eye, still serving food, touching it with his hands. Knowing how contagious pink eye is, my gf asked him what was wrong with his eye. He played it off, got insulted and commented back, what's wrong with you? then another waiter vouched for him and claimed it was from an old accident he had yrs ago. After teaching 30 years with students and having 2 kids of my own, I CERTAINLY know what pink eye is and looks like!! Then to top it off, had diarrhea following day from shrimps in green sauce. NEVER again will I enter that restaurant!!!

This might be Spanish but it ain't Tapas

By Steve-and-Jana |

Occasionally, we find ourselves eating in a restaurant that fails to live up to our hopes and expectations. When this happens, I usually chalk it down to “experience” and do not take the time and effort to write a “bad review”. But, for Spain, I am going to make the effort. We arrived at Spain at 1:15 on a sunny weekday afternoon, having passed several packed restaurants on 6th Avenue. We walked in, down the steps, into the bar. Apart from the staff, the bar was empty. The bar was also “bare” in the sense that it lacks in any form of decor or charm. With hindsight, we should have walked out … but we did not. Why did we choose to visit Spain? Well, we like Spanish food and we love Tapas. The first page of Spain’s website includes the following: “The Tapas Bar featuring complimentary appetizers such as our famous Sherry Meatballs and Patatas Bravas. Great for those of you in for a couple of cocktails and a quick, delicious snack.” So the waiter hurried us through the bar into the next room in this subterranean restaurant. This room features a low ceiling and the worst fake-brick walls I have seen in many years. We were the only customers. In fact, the only other customers we saw during our entire meal were two young men drinking beer at the bar when we left. (No Tapas for them.) Within a minute of being seated, the following items were slapped on our table … 1. A mussels appetizer 2. Meatballs 3. House salad 4. Bread and butter Before I describe these items, I think it is worth mentioning that Spain’s website boasts that “the restaurant has been open for business for well over 40 years now”. So possibly this explains why everything about this place … decor … waiters … food … reminded me of the 1970’s. The mussels were served cold … very, very cold … in their shell, smothered in a coarsely chopped onion topping. The predominant flavor was the onions. The meatballs were probably the “famous Sherry meatballs” mentioned on page one of their website. Served warm, they were small, dense and passable. The main ingredient of the house salad was iceberg lettuce, again served very cold, plus half of a very large Roma tomato, served “whole” (or rather served “large-half”). The tomato, given that it was a Roma tomato, showed promise of becoming tasty as it began to warm up. The dressing was O.K. The bread was a large helping of an unashamed air-filled Italian loaf. Butter was served in the once-ubiquitous little square foil-topped packets. If you want wine by the glass in this self-described Tapas bar, there are two choices: red or white. Sherry? I did not ask about sherry. Nor did I see it mentioned on the drinks list. We ordered one glass each of the red and the white. They were both pretty good and excellent value for money. While we were finishing our “free” introductory dishes, another one was added to our table. A small dish of sizzling hot chorizo. Very nice indeed. The best dish of our lunch. And the only one that could reasonably be described as a Tapas dish. Given that we had originally been hoping to have a Tapas-style meal … and given that there was no sign of any Tapas other than the chorizo … we decided to order a couple of “Appetizers”. We were promptly informed that, “because of all the food we have already given you”, we were “required” to order at least one main course. But our waiter offered a solution … He would “special-order” our “Gambas al Ajillo” as a main-course, which would include a side-dish. We acquiesced. At this point, we were just about giving up. Our second appetizer-dish was “Jamon Serrano”. This arrived in large thick slices, covering a large plate. Really nice ham. Good quality. Appropriately salty. Really good value. Served without any adornment except four lackluster olives. Our “Gambas al Ajillo” was indeed served as a large, main-course sized dish. It was pretty good. So was the Spanish-rice side dish that came with it. It was far more than we wanted and we left half of it. When the bill was presented, we found that this “special order” cost us two dollars more than any main-course shrimp dish on the menu. When it came time to pay, we were told that they take “cash only”. We will not be back.

Still great after all these years

By Spert |

I've been going to this intimate restaurant for many years and it has never failed to delight me and whomever I am dining with. I've dined with family, friends and co-workers and have always heard rave reviews. It starts wonderfully when, before you even order, plates of lamb, mussels and sliced sausage along with salad are delivered to your table. Although the menu selections are top notch, no one should go there without having the sangria (one of the best in the City) and any of their sumptuous paella. Service has always been very attentive and professional. The portions are more than generous (someone is always taking leftovers home) and the value for what you are getting is the best in Manhattan. Try to save room for the flan. The only thing that prevents me from giving it a 5 rating is that they do not accept credit cards, only cash. It is a small sacrifice for the dining experience.

Amazing food and amazing staff

By SteffiCam83 |

Just found out about this place around 6 months ago, Been there twice already and loved it both times!! Old fashioned family restaurant that makes you feel welcome and at home. Salad and 3 different kinds of appetizers come right on the table. You can just get filled from them ;-) Bread and butter how much as you want. Main courses are very good sizes and food is beyond delicious. Especially the shrimp in white sauce! Yummie!! The staff is beyond friendly and makes you feel like part of there family!! One thing I have to make people aware is that they do not accept credit cards so just make sure you take cash with you. It is worth every penny!!

Terrible food. Scruffy restaurant....

By Jons1961 |

Food was awful. Bland tasteless fare. Cheap cuts of chicken in paella. Needs a lick of paint. We left most of our food...

Great food, friendly staff, a real bargain!

We arrived around 10 pm on a Friday night. The front room consisting of a bar and dining tables was packed with a happy crowd. We passed small dining areas on the way to the dining room in the back which wasn't crowded. I loved the atmosphere - a great combination of old and newer decorations. The waiter brought 3 dishes of delicious appetizers to the table gratis. I ordered the paella and my husband ordered the shrimp with rice - both delicious and so plentiful, it was our Saturday dinner too. Loved the cappuchino and the dessert - and the bill, which was downright cheap for a NY restaurant. I highly recommend the restaurant.

Disappointing, but decently-priced

Really wanted to like this place, but unfortunately, the food was just not good. Everything from the tapas to the pollo campesino was overly salty and the jamón serrano was cut too thick to be enjoyable. Maybe we just got unlucky with our order, but I'd like to note that the salad (comes with all orders) was dressed with something that tasted and looked very similar to barbecue sauce...

Some good things and some not so good.

Our friends wanted us to experience some authentic Spanish food. The good: Free appetizers including: muscles, chorizo, meat balls, salad and bread all arrived the moment we sat down. The main courses were all plentiful. Some dishes were flavourful. I enjoyed the garlic prawns and the white fish in green sauce. Portion sizes were huge - none of the 4 of us could managing eating even half. The waiters were friendly and courteous. The two fellows who own the place appeared to both be there and they seemed to care that customers were happy. Now, the not so good: They don't take credit cards. The focus seems to be on flentiful portions. Some dishes were a bit bland. Main courses arrived at table in metal containers; I'm assuming that's what they were cooked in. They just looked very well used and not appealing at the table. There were numerous areas in the dining room where paint was chipping. The decor is best described as shabby. No soap dispenser in washrooms, only bar soap. The manager was a bit rude when we complained about no credit card service but I understand that its really his fault.

Great food close to the strand in Greenwich Village

We came here with friends for lunch - though the Internet said they opened at 12 they actually didn't open until 12:30 - but it was well worth the wait. We enjoyed the appetizers that we were brought - meatballs - sausage - mussels with finely chopped cucumbers tomatoes red onions - absolutely fresh and delicious. My husbands the gazpacho was fresh and delicious I ordered shrimp and rice; my daughters ordered chicken and rice; my husband and our friend ordered Paella Valenciana. The portions were very very generous and the prices were very reasonable. Plentiful delicious food!! Be warned that they do not accept credit cards so definitely stop by the ATM before you drop in. We walked from Union Square and it was maybe a 10 minute walk Definitely worth going off the beaten path to try this restaurant!

Great cash only

This local neighbors restaurant has a very homey family feel. Huge portions. One paella service to people! Lots of great appetizers are included. Don't forget cash only.

Awful Food and Dirty

By Inspiration201441 |

I love to find hole in the wall places that are off the beaten track. Spain has been around for some time and maybe the quality has gone down. I found this place dirty and in complete need of a renovation, the food was cold and overcooked. I will not be having a repeat visit to this establishment. Much better Spanish restaurants in the city.

Very Good Food, Very Reasonable

If you like Spanish food and basic ambiance and a definite NYC bargain this is the place for you. The prices are very reasonable and the food was quite good with very generous portions. There is a "back in the day" feel to the restaurant - no fancy decor, and business-like older men waiters. They serve tapas for free in the bar and will also bring some tapas of their choosing to your table at the beginning of the meal. It's not fancy, but very enjoyable.

I grew up patronizing Spain as a young child with my parents. Since moving from NY, I had only been back to Spain a few times. This is a neighborhood gem. Food is great. Paella is affordable. Service is warm.

Rustic Spanish

By Paul S |

Our friend who lives locally Recommended this joint and did say it was great value for money and the place was in need of a reform or refit as it was in a time warp of Franco Days !!! On entering thru the bar to the dining room out the back you feel that you are in 1974 with old pictures , flags and memorabilia adorning the walls of Spain 🇪🇸 and although not over friendly as soon as we sat we were given complimentary Meatballs , Chorizo , Salads and Mussels with Bread 🥖 Drinks were ordered and as we were laden with Tapas already we ordered Two Mains and another Starter to share on the table being a Paella Marisco , Pork Chops & Gambas Ajillo After 20 minutes Mains arrived & were huge in portion size and we all agreed the food was good and tasty 😋 On looking around the restaurant it was very tired in decoration and is really need of some TLC as certain areas of the dining room were showing damp patches and paint peeling. Toilets were just passable and really do need a clean but there was Soap , Towels and running water 💦 If its a budget meal and you are worldly travelled 🧳 then you will be fine here but do not go along looking for starched napkins , candles lit and background music this place is pure rustic and down to earth 🌏 Highly recommend the Pork Chops ..... Dinner for Three Adults 🧑 Including Tax was 77.00 Dollars 💵
